- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Tortured Fans Department podcast.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: I am Sean Boyle, and joining me today is our college football expert.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: He came at the beginning of the season for a preview.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: He has returned after potentially the best week of college football ever.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: It is Mr.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Jake Myers, the host of the Get Back Coach Podcast.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Jake, how are you?
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: Sean, we are doing excellent.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: There's a slight chill in the air.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Autumn is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: The leaves are changing.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: And college football, the greatest sport America has to offer, is in full swing.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: And we have a wide open field, and it doesn't get much better than that.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It does not get much better.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: And just to go over the rundown quickly for the listeners, it's going to be a college football-centric episode.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Of course, Jake is on.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: That's his expertise.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: It'd be foolish to go any other direction.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I will loop in some NFL thoughts before we wrap up as well.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: But we're talking football today.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And we just have to start with a simple question, Jake.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: How much fun is college football?
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: Sean, it's the most fun sport in the country.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: And I know the off-the-field stuff is the reason why.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Like if you're looking at strictly NFL versus college football, obviously the NFL is the better product.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: But we don't watch college football just for the product on the field.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: It's everything outside of it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: It's the atmospheres, the generations of families in the parking lot, the lore of teams, and this their history behind them.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: And the rivalries, too, that coincide with that lore.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Just this weekend, Sean.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Third Saturday in October with Alabama and Tennessee.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: The Deep South's oldest rivalry with Auburn and Georgia.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: You even have storylines like Indiana and Ohio State, who Ohio State is the blue blood premier program in the Big Ten going up against a historical bottom feeder doormat like Indiana, who just won a national title going against each other.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: It's the best sport that if your team sucks, you can still be locked in from noon to 11 and have an amazing day.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: It just rich in storylines, it oozes culture, and yeah, man, I love everything.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: I love everything about it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I love your passion for the sport, Jake, but I also completely agree.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: The pageantry that is associated with college football, and I use that word to cover everything that's not the game itself in between the white lines.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: It's so great.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: It's so great.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: You don't get anything else like it in American sports.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I'd say the next closest thing is college basketball.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: And when that rolls around in March Madness, we get some notes of college football.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: But especially in the South and some of these big schools, you don't get anything like these hundred thousand people gathering in one place to do one thing on a Saturday in the fall.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: It's great stuff.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: And this past Saturday, as we alluded to, was potentially one of the best days the sport has ever seen.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna unpack it a little bit, but we're also gonna kind of talk about how it factors into the rest of the season.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: The first question I have for you, Jake: what did we learn on Saturday that will hold true for the rest of the season?
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: So I think what we truly learned is everybody bleeds.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: Every team is human.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: And I think gone, I don't want to say completely, because eventually some team is going to come out of the woodwork like an absolute juggernaut.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: But I think that the NIL and the transfer portal have really evened the playing field and have given parity to the rest of the sport, which to be honest, I thought with NIL, the rich were just were just gonna get richer.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: And I think now teams are being able to kind of spread that money around.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: And now Georgia and Alabama aren't hoarding five-star and four-star guys where they're just gonna go somewhere else.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Now, I don't know over time how that's going to affect the sport.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know how it's going, you know, I don't know how long some of these programs are going to be able to keep paying guys the way that they are.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: But I think this has given us a lot more parity in the sport.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: And I think it's a better product for it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: Yes, I know teams aren't as quote-unquote good, at least on the top.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: Like 2001, Miami and some of those Bama teams and the Georgia team from a couple years ago, yeah, they would wipe the floor with the top teams this year.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: But we're getting parody in a sport where we haven't seen it before, and it's going to make it a very interesting end of the year because college football, it's a wide open field, folks.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: And and I think that is I think that's gonna be a lot of fun, and I think it's good for the sport overall.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: I think that's a great takeaway, and probably the most important one, to be quite honest.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: I don't think you were alone in thinking that NIL would do what you proposed it would do, it would make the rich get richer, so to speak.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: But it's done the opposite in such a way that I was always a college football fan, but it's taken my fandom to a new level because I'll be honest, there was, I would say, a 10-year stretch where it just felt like at the beginning of every season it was going to come down to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and then there would be an Ohio State or a Florida state or somebody in the mix on any given year, but it was really a four-team race.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And about all four of those teams I never cared about.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: And instead, what we're seeing now is it's a 20-team race.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Like it might maybe even more for some of these playoff spots.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And then you just when you think you have a team that can win a national championship or looks to be the favorite, they lose at home to an unranked Auburn team.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: And it's just each week that's going to continue happening.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: I think it's great for the sport as you mentioned.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: On that note, Jake, are there any teams that you trust are good?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: I know probably there's no great teams in the sport this year.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: What teams do you trust to be good?
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, that's all depends on what what you think good is, because you talk to one guy and good's in the top, you know, in the top 15.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: You talk to someone else, the goods only, you know, in the top five.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: You know, depends on who you talk to.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: But the here are the teams that I think are at the top of the sport, and I think are the teams that have the best shot at winning a national title.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: And I believe Ohio State and Indiana are two of those teams.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: I still believe it.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: Indiana, just because they're elite defense, I think they're lacking on offense.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Ohio State, I'm still putting in there.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: We don't know about Julian Saiyan right now, but they have such studs on offense.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Um their defense, a little worrisome, but I still think those two are gonna be really good out of the Big Ten.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: I still believe in Georgia.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: I still think Georgia is the best team in the country.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Yes, they slipped up against Auburn.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: They had some miscues in that game.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Miami, just because of their offense.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Offense is still stupid good.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Defense is struggling without those two edge guys that they lost to the draft.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: And their off, but their defense in in general is kind of struggling a little at times.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: I still believe in Notre Dame.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: I think Notre Dame is still a very good team.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: CJ Carr is excellent.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: I still think Notre Dame has a legitimate shot to win the national title.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: That was my co-host Jay's pick to win the whole thing.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: And then lastly, BYU.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: I they what they showed me, and yes, it was controversial at the end, Sean.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: I don't like to I don't like to stick up for I don't like to stick up for the Irish, but it might have been past interference, and there's one second left.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Kind of a reverse.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: There was time on that.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: I know, I know.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Reverse uh Western Michigan there.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: We just can't seem to get that clock right in some of these big games.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: I know, it's it's it's crazy.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: BYU showed me though that they're physical up front, and I think that was always the worry with everybody with BYU is that their physicality and their toughness uh up front, and and I think they showed it.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: Yes, struggled at times against the run, but I I I do believe in BYU.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: I think that's your top tier.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Your next tier are teams that aren't proven yet.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech hasn't proven anything to me yet.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: They just haven't.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: They've been like a forgotten team in the mix here.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Um Texas has beaten Ohio State, did a really good job there.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: I I don't trust their offense, and and Colin Simmons is hurt.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: And then I don't Alabama is another one where they could win out, and I wouldn't be surprised.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: You know, they could also potentially make a run.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: And you know what?
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, throw throw those Hillbillies down in Knoxville too, Tennessee.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: I I think they're another team that I think is good who has a shot.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: I want to unpack just a couple of those teams you went over because I I do agree with kind of the tiers and how you broke them down.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to do with Alabama.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: They in that Georgia game, they easily could have won.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Georgia fumbled four times, they recovered recovered all four.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: There was that pass interference call, which I mean was even more fighting pass interference than the Notre Dame.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: And they and it was also in a hurricane.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: So they they seem to be at level footing with Georgia, and I was thinking, okay, they're gonna come bounce back in Knoxville, take care of business, third Saturday in October, and they looked all out of sorts, and Keelan Russell looked like a young quarterback making one of his first starts on the road in a tough environment.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to do with them.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Would you would you be more comfortable saying they're closer to that elite tier or are they closer to a team that's not in the playoff for you?
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: I think Alabama's closer to the elite tier.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: I I think they're closer to the top than they are that next than than they are that that next tier down.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And then just to unpack that Indiana, Ohio State game, which Indiana had every chance to win.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: The receiver just seemed to lose track of where his feet were.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Nick Marsh, and here's here's the thing.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: I don't want to rag on guys.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: I I feel bad for Nick March, and I probably shouldn't, because he's a hired mercenary.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Like Sparty gave him a bag, and then as soon as he got good at Michigan State, he took a bigger bag to go to Indiana.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: Which listen, I mean, get paid, man.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: Like I mean, I I would probably do something similar, but yeah, he's a hired mercenary.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: That dude has no loyalty.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: He's just pay me, pay me, and I'll catch balls.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: So, dude, his face, I I thought there was a flag, but he immediately knew.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: He immediately knew I screwed up.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Hey, get paid, but also get those puppies in bounds.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: At least one of them.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Like you can do both things.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Both things can be true.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: I also just want to point out, I'm with you on Georgia being the best team in the country, but that was a concerning loss.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: It's not a panic stations code red or anything, but it was a game that I did not ever see Georgia losing.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I could see them playing down to their competition a little bit for a couple quarters, but the fact that they then kept making mistakes to lose that game to Auburn was it led a little bit more concern for Georgia than I previously had.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, they kept shooting themselves in the foot.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: They had they were on the the 45 or 50 yard line.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: They're they're around midfield.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, they fumbled.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, they they they shot themselves in the foot towards the end.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: Auburn is better than where they were last year.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, when you keep shooting yourselves in the foot like that, you're you're gonna get hit.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: Like you're you you're gonna regret it.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: And that's what happened.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: They also got a pretty cool moment in that game where Golish's son was on the field with him after the game.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: And uh a couple takeaways from that.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: His name's Bear.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Bear Golish.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Pretty sick name.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: I I I really enjoy that.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: That is actually a pretty sick name.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And the fact that he just called him Bro.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: He called his kid bro after the game was a little bit weird for me.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: And Golish, I don't know, it seemed a bit performative, the whole homecoming thing that all the couldn't make it, but Bear was here and he calls him bro.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: I wanted to buy into him, but I think we might have a theater major coaching Auburn now, is what is my other takeover.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: He he is.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: No, no, he is.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: He's he's a you said theater major.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: He's all he he he he's performative.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: He is performative.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: And and we kind of saw that in his in the beginning, in his like initial press conference, which most coaches are.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Listen, Sean, I don't know if you know this.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: College football coaches are absolute lunatics.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: They are they they they are not wired correctly, they're all out of their minds, and I think that's just what we see, you know, every Saturday when these things happen.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: There's also, Jake, one team that you didn't mention in the good conversation, and I feel a little bit offended because we're just talking about what's been done on the field.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: They're a top five resume so far in the sport, and that's why Kentucky is talking about it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna say, you're talking about Kentucky.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Can you please sing our praises a little bit, Will Stein?
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, so here's the thing on Kentucky.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, first of all, Will Stein is doing excellent work there.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Listen, he's another one who likes to be, he's a little performative himself.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: He's like, you have absolutely no problem with it.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Listen, man, they're winning games.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: He's running around like Jimmy Valvana winning the national title, you know.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: And then also the sideliner reporter asking him about, you know, hey, you you know, you beat a ranked team at home.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: He's like, Well, I, you know, we're ranked two.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Last time I checked, I'm like, oh buddy, here we go.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: First of all, the side of the reporter, I listen, I don't like to attack the media.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: That was a bad job by her.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: She got her, she got her rankings confused, and that happens.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, it happens.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: She needs to issue a hand up.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: It was, it seemed like an attack on Will Stein in the moment.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Jake, I also want to, as you talk about them, I want to get your thoughts on.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Did you see the clip of Oklahoma tried to run a trick play?
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And Will Stein signaled over to our buckle on the Oklahoma sideline, pointing at him, saying, I read you, I own you.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: And it turns out in the post-game press conference, he said they're good friends.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: He said it's one of his best friends in the sport, and he knew that trick play was coming, and he just wanted to kind of talk shit to him one time.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: I'm all in on the guy, Jake.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: He can't do a thing.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: I a hundred percent.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: I I would, you know, I'd be doing the same thing if I was that.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you gotta listen.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: Sometimes yelling over to the other sideline is warranted.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Okay, it's not.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, Sean, I personally, I would never.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, please.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: I would never, I would never do anything like that.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: You spent more time looking at that sideline than your own.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Um, so Kentucky, on the how they are able to roll the dice and win is something great.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: And Will Stein is right now doing really well.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately for Kentucky, if this keeps happening, this is the duality of Kentucky.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: Sorry, Kentucky football.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: If you keep doing well, you're eventually gonna lose them.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Don't don't do this.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: It's so uncommon on this game.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: It's so it's so terrible.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: I will say this.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Kentucky is playing very good football.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, they have some big games come, some other big games coming up.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: And the thing is, how are you gonna keep getting back up for these games?
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: So I I do think they're in a letdown spot soon, unfortunately.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: But if you're a Kentucky fan, you have to absolutely love it right now.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: The win total was three and a half or four and a half, Jake.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're six and one.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: You're right.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: Six wins, right?
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, six wins?
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: It's right and high.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Listen, you can drop a couple games, you can finish the year with eight, nine wins, and everyone's gonna be hunky dory.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Yes, the schedule, I agree with you.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: The schedule is scary because they're there in theory, you could lose the rest of the games, and it wouldn't be a big surprise.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: They're favored this weekend against Vanderbilt at home, must win.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: And then they get the bye week at a good time, I think, before they go to Knoxville, and then they still have to play Florida and Missouri, so and Louisville.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: All these SEC teams usually schedule three cupcakes and have nine league games.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: We have to play Louisville every year, so it's gonna be tricky.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: So I don't want to spend too much time on Kentucky because I'm probably gonna ramble at some point.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: But here's the here's the thing with Kentucky, and and I hope I'm wrong, or at least I hope I'm right with the first part.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: They beat Vandy, then they go on a bye.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: I think they sleepwalk through Tennessee and get smoked personally, because you you you lose some of that momentum.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: Stein's probably gonna give him a few days off, which he probably he should.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: You're gonna come back, and now you have to get back up in that groove again.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: And I think a lot of times in college, listen, and that this isn't the first time, this isn't rocket science or it's something that's new.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: A lot of teams and programs in college do not do well after a bye week.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: It's a thing.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: It's it's a very much rust.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: It's kids go home for two, three days, and now they have to get back up for it.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: And and I think when you're riding as high as they are, I think it's gonna be hard for them to get back up.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: It's a good point.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: It's a good point.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: We'll definitely keep an eye on it as the weeks progress.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Getting back to the original script here, Jake.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Who is the wild card team in college football?
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: I dubbed this the Charlie Day wildcard bitches team.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: That's just unpredictable week to week.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, uh you got a wild card team.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, it's Louisville, man.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: The defense is bad, and then the but the offense is good.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know, man.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Sorry, that was my best I could do early.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: It's really oh thank you.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: I've been working on it.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: Um so Louisville.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: Louisville is my wild card.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know what Louisville team's showing up ever.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: I never know.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: It's you know what though?
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: It's not just Louisville, it's Jeff Brahm, man.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: And and that think about his Purdue teams.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Think about his Purdue.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: Um beat Ohio State, get beat by 50 to Auburn in a bowl game.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Same year, same year, man.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: And that's just and again, when you're at Purdue, that's fine.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: And I Louisville's a it's uh maybe probably a tier above Purdue, and I think it's frustrating because they're in a conference that they could very well win, or or at least come in second, and they're playing with their food.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: You look at them against Ole Miss, they uh they're great.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: And then they lose to NC State.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Like, what are you doing?
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: They they have another questionable loss in there.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: They play, they're down 14-0 to Florida State sleepwalking.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, they they do win by 20-something.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: They're they're just a tough team to read every single week.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: Their offense is good, their defense, they I don't know, their defense is enigma.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: But yeah, Louisville is my wild card team.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: You don't know what you're gonna get.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: That's a good answer.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: They lost to Wake Forest, too.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm pretty sure.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Which you know what though?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Wake's pretty well.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Wake's doing pretty.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Listen, I like Dave Clausen a lot, but that was another where like I think Wake Forest just needed a little bit of change there, and they're they're doing pretty well.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree with Louisville as an answer to that question.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: It's actually a perfect answer.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: The only other team I thought of, Jake, for this was Cal.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: And it's to a lesser level.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: They're relatively bad as a team.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then they'll they'll win a game without JKS, and you're like, well, how'd you do that?
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And then he comes back and they get dog walked.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: So they're they're a little bit of a weird one, too.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: I want to wrap up the current, present college football discussion with a little bit of a stock exchange.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: We do this in the NFL from time to time.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Give me which teams you're buying into at this point, especially for the rest of this season, not necessarily talking long-term projects.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: I'm buying stock in UCLA.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Bob, listen, Bob Chesney is a heck of a football coach.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: I wanted him to be the listen, I I'm I like Matt Campbell, but I wanted Bob Chesney to be the Penn State's coach.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: But those meat heads at Old Maine think that they're too good to hire a coach from the the G5.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Um and I can contest, you you did want Chesney.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: You you wanted to.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're gonna be.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Yes, I was very high on Chesney.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: Anyway, he he's doing really well at UCL.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: They're gonna finish 10 and I think at worst, 10 and 2.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if you look at their schedule, honestly, I don't even see them losing two games.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: And and maybe they will just because you know you'll you'll sustain some injuries and things happening.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: Well the other thing is Nico, Nico's hurt.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: So, but Deifenbach looked fine against Wisconsin.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: It it's gonna come down to I think Michigan and Michigan and USC.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Those are gonna come to be the games.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: I think USC is gonna be more more talented than them, and that's gonna be a game.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: But listen, man, tenant Bob Chesney is the truth.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: I I I've been saying it, talking about it for two years, and I am buying stock in UCLA this year because of their remaining schedule and for the future.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Is there anybody else you're buying, or should we move on to who you're selling?
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: Um everyone's the thing is, Sean, like I don't everyone is properly like I'm not gaining anything on anybody.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: You know what I'm saying?
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Like if I want to buy a stock, I want to buy it low.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: And even though UCLA is doing very well right now, I think they're ranked 12th.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: I I think I could still buy that and keep it where it's more profitable down the road.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Everyone else is pretty much what you're getting.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: The team that just came to mind as you were talking for me, in because of the way you broke it down, I think Ole Miss might have a little bit of room to grow as well.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: They're they're obviously ranked high in a good team, but I think they could win a national title this year, and they're not necessarily in those discussions.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: No, man.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Like I I like Ole Miss.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: Again, I just think I just think they're properly rated.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's fair.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: What teams are you selling some shares on?
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe a team that has an overinflated rating next to them right now.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: I got two for you, man.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: I got two.
- 21:59SPEAKER_03: One is Is Utah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: I just don't know.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: I just don't know who they are.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: They had a rough win against Colorado.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: They had a rough win against Colorado.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: But I just don't know what Utah is right now.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: And right now they're 10th, and they haven't shown me anything.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: That's a good point.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I didn't even realize they were 10th, but they they are trending it to look like a team that does not belong 10th.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: That's for sure.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Who else do you have?
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: You're such a sick.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Hang on, hang on.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: So hang on.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: This is this is why.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: This is why.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: So again, if you have something that is profitable right now, you want to sell it before it goes down.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, you have three ranked games coming up with Kentucky.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: I think eventually they're gonna roll the dice and it's not gonna work.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, that's fair.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: I that's fair.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: I I do think just hey, investments are without emotion.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: That's how people invest.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: The best investors don't let emotion get into this.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: And if I was investing without emotion, I think it might be a good point to sell some Kentucky shares.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: I I could see that argument.
- 23:16SPEAKER_06: Yes, that's what I'm saying.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: I will just counteract that.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: I I think if anybody's still holding any Matt Campbell stock, just to throw one right back and right across your I think you should get rid of it.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Well, listen, I thought we were talking about good teams.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: It could be any team.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: I think listen, there is no stock right now, man.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: Stocks at an all-time well, I think it might go lower, is what it could be.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Penn State, no, I just I just wanted to get a jab across your way after taking several several for Kentucky.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Jake, let's shift the discussion a bit because it was not just an action-packed weekend between the lines.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: We also had some big news happen during the week.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: The playoffs expansion that we all assumed would take place has arrived.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: In 2027, we will be shifting towards a 2014 playoff, replacing the current format of 12 teams.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Let's start with the basic question, Jake.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Softball for you.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: What do you make of the decision?
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Well, first, it's a decision that I want to say 80% of college football fans don't want.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: It devalues the regular season.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: And college football has always had a unique regular season where if you before it used to be if you lost a game, there's a chance you probably wouldn't play for a national title.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Now you can afford a loss and you'll be okay.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: Now, two losses, you're on a bubble, three losses, you're definitely out.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: So it's a season that there is no room for error every weekend matters.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: So it kind of devalues that.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: They're going to 24.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: And do you know what, like honestly, uh, do I do you don't want to know the reason why people are so against this?
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: And and I did some self-reflection on this, Sean.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: And it's because during winter break, it's December, it's New Year's Eve, it's New Year's Day.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: You want to get up and you want to watch college football from noon until midnight and not have to worry about anything.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: You want to watch all of the crazy, zany games that meant something for all those years of your life.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: And now with a playoff, yeah, playoff is great, but all those bowls are gonna go away and they're gonna mean even less now.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: And I I will say, as a person who does not like the 2014 playoff, those games haven't mattered in a while anyway.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Like since the expansion, it hasn't really it hasn't really mattered.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Even games, even during the 14 playoffs Sean, like honestly, Penn State won a Rose Bowl, and I I don't feel anything.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, it was fun, yeah, but I just it it doesn't carry this those bowl games don't carry the same weight.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Sean, again, I don't want to turn this into the Penn State pod, but during the 16-team playoff, Penn State won a Fiesta Bowl, a cotton bowl, and a and a Rose Bowl.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: In like, I don't know, six years, they won three major bowl games, and yeah, it was fun for the day, but in the grand scheme of things, nobody cares.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: So, and you have opt-outs going on.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like you had people opting out like Utah had two people opt out of that Rose Bowl against Penn State.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Penn State had two guys opt out.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: One was sick, whatever, but anyway, it was still an opt-out.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: Like, I think now, 24 teams, you're going more games are going to have heavy influence.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: More games are going to mean more in December and early January.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: But the fact that we're losing all the bowl games in this situation, that's the sad part.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: And I think that's the part that's gonna be hard to let go.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, but it it's and and I know people who are just NFL fans listening think this is insane.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: My friends who are NFL fans are like, why would you care about the Cheese It Bowl or the Russell Athletic Bowl?
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Like, why would you care about that?
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: Why do you care about the Outback Bowl?
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Like, who cares?
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, because those meant something to me.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Like New Year's Day used to be a huge thing.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Um, and I I think we're losing that, and I think we're losing some of college football to the suits and the money and the greed that is uh network television.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: And I think that's also why a lot of people are upset.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: They're gonna say it's because of devaluing the regular season and we shouldn't have 24 teams, which is true, but the real reason is we're losing the culture of what made college football amazing to a lot of us, and we're doing it so the casual fan will watch more games.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's all greed.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: This is and this is actually a good discussion, I think, because I think I fall into the casual fan bucket.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: I'm probably more than a casual fan.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: You know, you're not just yeah, I'm not just uh Tom Dicker Harry who tunes in once a month to watch college football, but I'm definitely not as hardcore of a fan as you.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: And I don't want to sound like I'm disrespecting the hardcore fan because that's what makes the sport great.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I like you and people that are as passionate as you, we need those people in the sport and to stick around.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: And their opinion should carry more weight than mine.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: But the argument I'm going to make, I keep hearing this devalue the regular season thing.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: And I do agree if you look at that micro sample size of the top eight or so teams, yes, those eight teams, the Ohio States, the Alabamas, the elite programs, their regular season is not as important because they could take on a second and likely a third loss now and still be in the playoff.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: But I've never rooted for one of those elite teams.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: As someone who likes temple football and Kentucky football, I think the regular season is actually adding value because you're making more games more meaningful for more teams.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So, yes, I get the argument that at the top of the sport, the regular season's devalued.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: It doesn't mean as much if you lose a game.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: I get that.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: And I also do agree with you.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: I hate losing bowl games too.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Even as a non-sicko, I love the little bowl pools we would do and having a bowl game on and that would be.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: I don't even do them anymore.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: I know because I don't even do them anymore.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: You know how sad that is?
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: It is like and I and I probably shouldn't say this, but like I was a little kid, like putting highlighters to like hundreds of papers at my kitchen table growing up.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: When it was on paper, not online.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: Like I missed that.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: And we certainly do lose something in that week, especially between Christmas and New Year's when the days all blend together and you don't know which day is which, but you know a bowl game's gonna be on around 11 a.m.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: or noon.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Western Kentucky and Central Michigan played one of the greatest games in the Bahamas Bowl, and I'll never forget it.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: And it was on noon, like on December 27th.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: It was great.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: And I agree that it sucks we're losing that, but that's already gone with the 12-team playoff, in my opinion.
- 30:29SPEAKER_05: It is.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I don't think that's an argument for this change.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: I think the the toothpaste was out of the tube when they expanded to 12.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: And for me now, as someone who kind of roots for teams on the fringes that could see a world, could see a day where their team makes that 24, I don't get the devalue of the regular season argument.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: I think it actually expands how many games matter in the regular season.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: So that would be my counterpoint.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And also I do just think these these fans are so awesome.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: They're not thinking about in a rivalry game.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: It's devalued because the playoff, we're gonna be in it anyway.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: No.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: No, you want to host the playoff game, right?
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: That's and that's one thing I will push back on is people are like, oh, well, you're gonna have guys sit out of uh Rivalry Week.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: No, you're not, because you're gonna be fighting, you're you're still fighting for a resume.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Like we very I I don't think we'll will well, I mean, we probably will at some point, where there's gonna be a team that's undefeated, and then there's gonna be a bunch of 10 and 2 teams, and they're gonna be like, hey, we can rest our starters.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: How many times is that actually gonna happen?
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: And that is not probably nothing.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: It's right.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: And this is what I explained uh on my pod.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: If if Ohio State's, let's say they have one loss and Michigan has two losses, yeah.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: Michigan is fighting to make sure they're in the playoff, and Ohio State is fighting to make sure that they get a home field for two games.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: So I do think the rivalry week is going to.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Now, again, I wanted 16.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: But I guess with this, two home games, and then you'll have four four championships or four bowl, like orange, orange sugar.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: It's like four of the big ones, and then two of the big ones, and then your title.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Which I think, which I also think is nice because even if you don't win the whole thing, you get to say, hey, we won the sugar bowl that year.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: So those, the big playoffs.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: So again, and I know I'm a person that doesn't like this, but I think I'm selling it to more people now.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, those big bowl games are now gonna mean something.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: But it's it's at the expense of the Citrus Bowl and the Outback and everything and all those.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think both things can kind of be true for me.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: I I do mourn the loss of bowl games as we once knew them, but I already thought those were gone and they were becoming obsolete.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: So they were dying.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: It's kind of just like now, now you can make the argument too, we're also throwing out conference championship games with this new model.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: Fine.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: I I I there's I have no you I have no use for championship weekend anymore.
- 33:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm kind of fine.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: There's no use for it.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: There's no use for it.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: How will we crown a champion?
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: You have tiebreakers like you always have.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And also tiebreakers.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: And also for years, these conferences weren't necessarily channel crowning correct champions anyway.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: They had divisions where one division would be miserable, like the Big Ten West.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: John, who won the ACC last year?
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Duke, didn't they?
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was Duke.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: It was Duke.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: What are we doing?
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: What are we doing?
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: I think I think I got you on board, Jake.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: You're in, right?
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: 2014.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: Here's the thing.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna hate it because I'm gonna miss the bowl games.
- 33:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: But like, when though when college, when when the playoffs on, oh, I'm gonna be I'm gonna be in and we're gonna like it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: And listen, FCS has been doing it for a while.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: Rest in peace, my boy Mike Leach.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: He's been asking for this for a while.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's insane that it's sad that Mike Leach had to pass away years before we got an actual playoff.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: But I will give you this, Sean, and I I I I think this is also another thing.
- 34:25SPEAKER_03: I don't there I think 12 teams in that 2014 playoff will have no shot at winning a national title.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: But you know what?
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: But guess what?
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: Neither in and neither it's the same thing in March Madness.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: Although I will say this March Madness, you shoot a basketball in college football.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: If you're bigger, stronger, faster, you're going to kill the person on the other side.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: You know, upsets upsets aren't as big, and especially at their best in football.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: So yeah, it's I'm gonna miss the bowl games, man.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna miss them.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: But I I think we're gonna have more games where teams are gonna be at full strength than than ever in the postseason.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: And I think that's important as well.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: And honestly, Jake, I'm with you on the point, there's never gonna be anything like March Madness.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, those first two days of March Madness are the most uncut drug this world has to offer.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: But in a year like this one, if the playoff were to be 24 teams this year, I think it'd be the perfect time to roll it out because we just talked, we just spent minutes talking about how there is no dominant team, and we're seeing Auburn go into a Georgia, who we both agree is probably the best team in the country, and win on their home turf.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: And there will be years in the future where that sort of thing happens in a playoff setting.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: And yes, it might be a one-game upset, and Auburn probably couldn't win a national title, but that still disrupts the entire picture and how we thought the season would play out.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: So I'm all for it.
- 35:55SPEAKER_03: And another thing, if a Boise or hell, an Iowa, a Kentucky, if they win a playoff game, it it it's a ma it's it's huge for them.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes like it's huge for them.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: You know, you're talking about you know the field being oh w you know wide open, you know.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: God, I I wish Penn State could at least be, I don't know, 10 and 2 and be in the mix, but sh, you know, I mean, God, I mean that's just that's just bizarre world that that'll happen.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: You know, could you imagine?
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: Sean, could you imagine being a team in this level of college football being consistently like 10 and 2 and like keep making the playoff?
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: Like, who would want that, right?
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: It's it's not me.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: I would so funny because it's the first divorce ever between Penn State and James Franklin where both sides lost.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: They there's no house anymore.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: The kids hate going to both parents' homes.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: They're they're really they're struggling on the dating scene.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: They're they've downloaded the apps and the apps aren't working.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: It's a really ugly divorce for both sides, and they're just looking at each other from across the country going, oh man, what can I do?
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: I do I will say this.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: I I know we're getting off topic because of me, but I think Virginia Tech looks fine.
- 37:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:13SPEAKER_03: Like Virginia Tech looks so they had that bad loss to Cal.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: That controversial loss to to Pitt where they should have won.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: That just they should have beat Cal.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: Other than that, man, like they're looking a lot better.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Shot, I told someone this today.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Penn State's gonna win a lot of games, I think, towards the end of the year.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: I think Penn State ends up seven and five, eight and four.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Ooh, okay.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: I think Virginia Tech will be around there.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: You just know TV execs are saying Duke's Mayo Bowl, Penn State, Virginia Tech.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Could you imagine the toxicity around that game?
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Please.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Bulls aren't dead, Jake.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: That might bring bulls back.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: That game.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: That could bring back they have to.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: We're towards the end of bowls.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: That's what you gotta do.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: But yeah.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: So anyway, that's my that's my uh prediction for later on.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: But yeah, dude, RIP bowls.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: I think eventually we're gonna be okay with the 2014 playoff.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, last point on the 2014 playoff.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Notre Dame basically has a free runway into the playoff each year now.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: They basically have that at 12 teams, but they still do need to go out and perform and at least basically only afford a loss or two.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: With with 24 teams, they could probably afford three just based on what we've seen in the past.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: So they have full autonomy over what they do and who they schedule.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: Do you see a world existing where teams try to leave a conference and have full control of their schedule and their media rights like Notre Dame does?
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: No, because if they were to do it, a collection of them would have to do it.
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: But I don't think they're gonna do that because then you're just gonna be playing those teams, meaning it's gonna be harder for you to win games because only the top teams are gonna want to do that.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: I don't see them doing it because you're gonna leave the rest of the you're gonna leave the rest of the sports.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: And I do think those still matter in college athletics.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: So I don't think they're gonna do that.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: However, you bring up Notre Dame and they're scheduling, they have to play what five ACC teams every year.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: USC doesn't want to play them, which you know, I I'm on both sides there.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: Like USC has a point where we're we're in the Big Ten now.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: We don't want to be scheduling Notre Dame every year if we're already playing nine conference games.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: I can see Notre Dame's point of them wanting to play USC to have another marquee matchup.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: So I understand it.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: Listen, we need a committee or a commissioner, we need someone leading the NCAA that says you're gonna play nine conference games, and this is who you're gonna play in out of conference.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: And I think it's very easy.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: You you split it up in basketball.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: You know how you have quad one, quad two, quad three, Sean?
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Okay, you split it up into three quads.
- 39:53SPEAKER_03: Your quad one is your top 15 teams, your quad two is 16 to 30, everyone else is quad uh quad three or whatever.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: Or power five is quad three, uh low power fours, everyone else is quad four.
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: This is what you do.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Okay, you play Georgia plays Georgia Tech every year, Sean, right?
- 40:14SPEAKER_03: Georgia plays Georgia Tech.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, if Georgia Tech's good the year before, say they're quad one.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: Hey, Georgia, you can play two cupcakes now.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: You can play people in quad three and quad four.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: If Georgia Tech is bad, say they're middle tier, quad two, quad three, say, oh, hey, you have to play another quad two or quad three team along with your cupcake.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: Makes sense.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Based off now, it's based off the year before, but still, but if you had a committee that says that, then everything's equal.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Listen, I Penn State's a non-conference schedule sucks in the near future.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Because Penn State played nine power conference teams in 11 years uh for an out-of-conference game.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: So they're like, hey, we're winning all these games, we're going to tough environments.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: And the one game we did lose kept us out of the playoff.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: So are we really gaining?
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: Are we really benefiting anything?
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: No.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: So they're stuck, they're not gonna play anybody anymore.
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: And I think Notre Dame's gonna do the same thing.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: They're gonna play their ACC schools, they'll play Michigan State or Michigan or or someone else, and then they're gonna play the the academies and and and independence.
- 41:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:27SPEAKER_03: So I I I don't blame Notre Dame because everyone else is doing the same thing.
- 41:31SPEAKER_03: We need a commissioner or a con committee that says that works with the conferences and says, hey, this is who you're playing.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: So we can have interconference games that are high profile, and that also helps the regular season, Sean.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: So we'll tie a bow on all of the playoff expansion and conference talk there, Jake.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: As we wrap up college football, I have asked you to prepare for our listeners a very apt segment here.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: It is college football's most tortured fans.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: This is the Tortured Fans Department, Jake.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: You have five schools for me.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: I want you to count us down from five to one.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: I'll try to chime in.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: I only have a couple schools in mind that I am assuming will be on your list.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: So I'm fascinated because you have your finger on the pulse of these fan bases a lot better than you.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: I think I do.
- 42:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I do.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: So start us off with number five.
- 42:23SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: First, uh, just want to say, these are big, passionate fan bases that are tortured.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Okay, you're you're not gonna see Kansas, Vandy, and Ruckers in here.
- 42:33unknown: Okay.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Spoiler.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: A spoiler for all the fancy.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: Like they're already downtrodden.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: Like there, there's no, there's no torturing, they're already dead.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: So the torture fan base is number five, so this is recent memory, okay?
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like recent years, okay.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: Five is Florida State.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: They have the national title with Jameis Winston.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: However, it's gone downhill since, and every time they look to have some hope, like uh a couple years ago, uh, their quarterback gets hurt, they're undefeated, they go out of the playoff, and then they phone in a bowl game, they get beat by 60, and it hasn't been the same since.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: So Florida State is number five, and they're they're in disarray.
- 43:12unknown: Right.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like that you prefaced it with this.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: These are people that used to be able to afford charter flights.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: They flew private, and now they're being squeezed in the back of a Spirit Airlines middle row 38 F.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: Just a disaster.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: So I like that there's been you have to know what it tastes like to be a good team that really suffers wanting to get back there.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: So I think that's a good start, Florida State.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: Number four, this might be a surprise, but number four is West Virginia for me.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: I know these, I know these people personally.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: These are very passionate fan base.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: This is a very passionate fan base.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: They have come close a few times.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: Again, 2007, man.
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: They were very close.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: Our your favorite uh broadcast.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Broadcaster, analyst, slash country music singer, slash WWE broadcaster, Pat McAfee blows two kicks.
- 44:09SPEAKER_03: They lose the game by four to Pitt, and West Virginia is left out of a possible national title.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: So this team, this program, has passionate fans that die with this team, and they haven't had a whole lot to cheer about for a while.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: And it seems like every time they come close, they're just massively disappointed.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: And because of that, they never seem to win.
- 44:34SPEAKER_03: This is another team that never sees seems to win a big game.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: They do have that vibe.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: They always.
- 44:41SPEAKER_03: It's been like that for a while.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: You'd have to go back to like 2008, uh 2011 Orange Bowl against Clemson, probably.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's it's been a while since West Virginia's won a big game, so I got the West Virginia Mountaineers on here.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you shot at West Virginia.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: I've always had an appreciation for the Mountaineers, and I do think they're underrated in terms of just how tortured they've been because they've been so close to tasting the highest of highs and they just haven't gotten there.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: I I like that you included them on this list.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: Who is number three?
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: Hang on, they're like they're so close, like they're like a couple numbers from missing the Powerball to have generational wealth, and they just never do.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: They never get.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: They never they've never reached the high life, which is different than a couple of these others.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: So number three, I have to go with the home, the the hometown call here.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: I'm going with the Penn State Nittany Lions.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: How do they know they're making the way on this list?
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Not anymore.
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: Not anymore, Sean.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: We had that, we got rid of it.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: Hey, yeah, let's see how Matt does with his Ted Lasso quotes every week.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Midwest Matt.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Midwest Matt.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: Um I like him.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: He's just such a he is a he sounds like a good dude.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: All right, Penn State.
- 46:02SPEAKER_03: This is why.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: This team used to this team used to fly first class.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: This team was, you know, 60s, 70s, 80s, early 90s.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: This team was very, very good.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: Also had some peaks in there.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, uh the the man that shall not be named did some despicable, terrible, horrible things, brought the program down, and then hey, things were looking good again.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: But not too good.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: Again, it's that you're winning a lot, but you're not, you're not quite every time there's a chance to to kind of get closer to the mountaintop.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: You're so close, you just gotta you fall back down a couple runs.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: And and the thing is, Sean, you do that enough times and you think, hmm, maybe I need better equipment.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: Maybe I need better equipment.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: So you get better equipment, and now you've fallen down a whole bunch, a whole bunch of summits down.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: I don't know if that's the correct answer.
- 47:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're back at base camp.
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: We're back at base camp again.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: This we're back where we were 10 years ago.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: So they're asking people who descended the mountain, just yeah, what'd you do?
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: What'd you do when you got to this point?
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and they're still thinking for answered now, yeah.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so again, can the new equipment get us back to that top?
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: I certainly hope so.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Unless maybe maybe we're just gonna be stuck in base camp for a while to gather our thoughts before we try and get some better equipment from California.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: So we'll see.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see, I think this equipment was a hand-me-down Jake that you bought because that hat that he wears is awfully beat up.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: It's uh the aesthetic of oh, it's a rugged old ball coach.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: It's it's uh it's worn down equipment.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: It's new to you.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: It's new to you, it's not necessarily new.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: I can do a whole pot on that fiasco.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: But anyway, I do like Matt Campbell.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: I think he's a good guy, he's a good guy.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: He's a good one.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: Which listen, if you if the first thing you have to say about your college football coach is, you know, he's a good guy.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: Probably not a good sign.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: It's not a good sign.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: It's most conversations that start, he's such a good guy, aren't great.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: Dating, everything.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: It's everything.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: Usually not good.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: Not good.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: Number two, I'm keeping it in the family, and I'm gonna go with my co-host team.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: I'm going with the Texas AM fighting ags.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, they're not doing so well this year.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: And Sean, this is why they got oil money, baby.
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: They got lots of money, and like they're not even the premier team in their state.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: Like, Texas has been owning them for a while.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Like, once in a while, AM knocks them off, and it's a huge deal.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: But like, AM is the little brother there, and they have boatloads of money.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: And I can't remember the last time they've even sniffed a national title or or like they go in the playoffs, lose to Miami.
- 49:06SPEAKER_03: They did win a major bowl game in 2020, but like, I don't know.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: That's a fart in the wind.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: That's a fart in the wind.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: The major bowl game.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: And they beat North Carolina during COVID.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: I just think exactly, like, the even the Johnny football years, man, like the Peach Bowl.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: No offense if Jay's listening.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: That was his big, that was his big coming out party, the Peach Bowl.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's but still like that was uncalled for.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: I wasn't a shot.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: It wasn't a shot.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: I love Jay.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: It was but I'm saying, like, that's I think they're tortured base where they're pouring tons of money in, and they're they're they're not even the premier team in their state, and they're they're not even coming close.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: But again, the playoff team, like stuff like that.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: So they haven't even reached the height.
- 50:00SPEAKER_03: Like, at least Penn State has some like historical stuff they can hang their hat on.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: Because Penn State and AM, I think, are are are kind of similar programs in a sense.
- 50:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: Penn State just has more history to it.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: And but I I think AM just hasn't gotten there.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: Jake, it's funny.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: I did a tortured fans of the week segment earlier this year, and I said fans of cults.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: And I I listed off both Penn State and Texas AM.
- 50:22SPEAKER_03: You have two on there, and honestly, West Virginia is not that far behind.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: No.
- 50:27SPEAKER_03: They're a backwoods cult.
- 50:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the problem with the organized or anything.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: But there's they're they're just as stupid.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: Probably dumb.
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: Penn State and AM they've mobilized, they've found the internet and and ways into our everyday lives.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: West Virginia's doing it all in the backwoods, like you said.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: It's not it's not a mobile unit yet.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: Now, Jake, I'm assuming this torture fan base, the first one, has to be thinking of, but I also give it to me.
- 50:59SPEAKER_03: It's it's Nebraska.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah.
- 51:01SPEAKER_03: Dude, hey, I saw a stat, Sean.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: I saw a stat.
- 51:08SPEAKER_03: No one has a higher percentage of games in call in Division I college football in uh the power of conferences.
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: No one has a higher percentage of games lost where they were sitting at an 80 or higher win rate.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: Like an 80% chance of win.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: I think they're losing them at 25%.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: Like that is astronomical.
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: They are fine, like the loss to Indiana, the loss last week, the losses over the last how many years?
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: We're talking about Nebraska is the best team with a losing record since blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: We've been saying that for years, man.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: And again, this is a program who has tasted the highlight.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: This is a program who has flown first class, and now they're with the they're with the slums.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: Now they're slumming it, man.
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: This is Nebraska is the Rose family in Shits Creek, where they used to have money, and now they have to live in a shitty hotel.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: That is the Nebraska Cornhuskers right now.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: And I don't know when they're gonna get out.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jake, it had to be number one.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm glad you you went this way.
- 52:19SPEAKER_03: And they're forced to eat their own shit every week.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: They're forced to eat it, Sean, because they keep getting close to winning games and they just don't.
- 52:27SPEAKER_03: They they are finding ways to lose that are it's unfathomable how many, how, how much they are finding ways to lose.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's it's almost like somebody's writing the script.
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: Like you could not write the script that Dylan Rohilla comes in in the fourth quarter last week and beats them.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: You can't write it.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: You can't write it.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: And I also feel insane.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: I feel so bad for these people because they really have nothing, Jake.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you saw the clip of they said they made an announcement.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: If anybody's listening on the radio, stick your fours up when you're on the tractor.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: These people just husk corn and care about their football team, Jake.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: And they've got nothing else.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: There's nothing else in that state.
- 53:04SPEAKER_03: Let me tell you a story.
- 53:06SPEAKER_03: My uh really quick, my dad's friends went out to hunt in Nebraska, okay?
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: Now it's Monday night.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, Monday night in the fall.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: Or maybe winter-ish.
- 53:20SPEAKER_03: And it's Monday night.
- 53:22SPEAKER_03: And they're like, hey, like, can't you put on Monday night football?
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: And they're like, no, sorry, Nebraska volleyball's on.
- 53:30SPEAKER_03: They have they have no, they have they don't know what professional sports are.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: No.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: They could care less.
- 53:38SPEAKER_03: They are all in on Cornhusker sports all the time, every time.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: And they their professional foot their professional team is Nebraska football.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: That is their professional team.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: And and they they reached the high life and now it's taken away from them.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they've tasted steak and now they're just eating leftovers from a trash bag.
- 53:59SPEAKER_01: They're like they have a raccoon palate now.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: They'll take anything.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: This poor guy will come.
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: They went from steak to man witches.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Will Will Compton, this guy.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's so funny.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: Every week he rallies himself up on Twitter with these videos.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: Like he just doesn't stop believing.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: And these Oscar fans, they don't stop believing.
- 54:17SPEAKER_01: They truly think the next one's the one.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: And it just never is.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: It never, never, ever is.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: On a game basis, too.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: On a weekly basis.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: Like Penn State, it's like a yearly thing.
- 54:28SPEAKER_03: Florida State, yearly thing, West Virginia, yearly thing.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: Nebraska, it is a weekly or weekly thing, man.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: Well, that's a perfect place to end our college football discussion today, Jake.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: I want to talk a little bit about the NFL.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: If you'll indulge me, I have some notes from the field.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: I'll indulge.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: I'll indulge.
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: You you watch some Pro Ball as well.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: So I do.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: I've got some notes from the field that I want to bounce off of you and just get your reaction.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: I think this is a great place to start.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: My ball coach, Mike McCarthy, as a Steelers fan, he spent all of halftime Jake in the medical tent because his foot was stepped on.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: I've never seen anything like this in my life.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure how he couldn't arrange a cart.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: He was walking just fine in the second half.
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: It was it was stunning to hear this on the broadcast.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: They said he spent the whole time just posted up in that tent.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: I said he didn't even come out for air, like the whole 15 minutes just didn't move.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: Is this maybe I overrate halftime as a guy who didn't play at any level?
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: You played in college.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: Is halftime overrated?
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Because in my opinion, I thought the coach got on the drawing board in there and changed some stuff.
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: We were getting our asses kicked, and he didn't go into the locker room.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: So here's the thing.
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: I think in the NFL it's probably overrated.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: Peyton Manning has said all the time that like they don't do a whole lot at halftime.
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: Their plan is their plan and they they kind of stick with it.
- 55:48SPEAKER_03: Again, I played low-level college football.
- 55:50SPEAKER_03: I coached low level, I coached lower level college football.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: So I think in that sense, yes, it's true.
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: Like you come together and you say, hey, this is what we're gonna do.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: It's mainly coaches collaborating, looking at looking at your play chart, looking at what they're doing, and kind of saying, okay, what are we going to do now?
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: And sometimes it's a great plan.
- 56:12SPEAKER_03: Other times you go in there and say, hey, listen, this is what they're doing, but we're gonna stick with our game plan and just gotta watch for this.
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: So I think in certain levels, levels of colleges, it definitely is an important time.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: Uh in the professionals, it's probably a little overrated.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Well, that was something I learned this weekend because I just couldn't believe that our head coach got his toe stepped on and couldn't make it into the locker room.
- 56:35SPEAKER_03: That's just your assistant coaches are doing way more work than your head coaches, anyway.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: Well, that's proven now.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: The Steelers ended up coming back and winning.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, yeah, I can't really complain too much, but it was it was surprising to say the least.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Another coaching topic, Jake.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you saw this.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: I know you have a bone to pick with this guy as well.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: John Harbaugh deserves to be in prison.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: Which one is the Ravens or the Giants coach?
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: Is it John?
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: John.
- 57:00SPEAKER_01: I can't get the Giants right.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: I had in my notes, Jim.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: It's John that I'm referring to.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: I saw that and I was like, do I change it on him?
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: You should have changed it.
- 57:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: This guy, prison.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Cam Scadaboo doesn't have a carry in the game.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: He was the starter going into the season, doesn't get a carry.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: Of course, fantasy managers are up in arms about it.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: And then he owes me$15.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: And then he gives an answer in the press conference that I honestly had just have to tip my cap and respect, Jake.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: He says they were trying to give everyone a chance to see who can get the hot hand.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: Which the reporter then goes, Well, you kind of didn't give Cam the ball, so I don't know how you can tell if he had the hot hand or not.
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: He just pushed back a little bit.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: And Harbaugh starts freaking out.
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: He says, That's the best answer you're gonna get from a coach.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: You could ask a thousand coaches, you'll get a better answer.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: I I don't know that you're able to claim that, Jim.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: John.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know whoever one you are.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: It's a hundred percent about ball security.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: He fumbled, and I think Cam even said he was he's he's being he feels he's being punished for fumbling the ball.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: And I think so.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: And and I think John doesn't want to say that because it's like I don't think he wants people to think he had that Scadaboo has a fumble issue or a ball security issue, but I They watch tape, they they can figure it out.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: He has four fumbles.
- 58:21SPEAKER_03: I know they can figure it out.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: So uh Scataboo has four fumbles this year, which is not it's not ideal.
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: It's not ideal.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: Just say I better, he's fumbled four fucking times.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:34SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm saying.
- 58:35SPEAKER_03: That's what you say.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: You're like, listen, we Cam is having some ball security issues, and we wanted and then say we wanted to see if someone else could give us a spark.
- 58:47SPEAKER_03: That's what you're saying, but you you you're not transparent, and I think that's gonna hurt the player in the long run because the player has to know.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: He completely gaslighted the whole entire media room with his answer and stuff like that.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, unless he's had behind closed doors, unless he said behind closed doors of hey, I'm gonna deflect this, but I'm I'm benching you.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: That could have that could also be a thing.
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: He could say I'm benching you because of ball security, but in the media, I'm not gonna throw you under the bus.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna if you're clearly he should have said then, which which I don't think he did based on what Scott said.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's a it's a weird situation.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: The Giants, we'll get to them.
- 59:23SPEAKER_01: We'll get to them in just a second.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: I know you want him in jail.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: We have an award to give out, Jake.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: This is a lifetime achievement award for biggest douchebag, and it is CJ Gardner Johnson who takes home the prize.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: He is up to 13 incidents that have led to almost$200,000 in fines.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: He is allergic to being a good guy.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: He has spit in the face of Brock Bowers in his latest act.
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: It came out also, Kyle Juszczyk said he did the same thing to me last year.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: He makes comments after every game.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: He called the guy on the Patriots, Afton Chisholm, a practice quad player who made a play to beat them earlier in the season.
- 59:59SPEAKER_01: He is just an agitator, a shit talker.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: He's gone in fights in almost every training camp with his own team.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: He doesn't discriminate.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: He'll do it to his own guys, too.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: And I it sucks because aside from this clown show that they deploy at safety, the Bills are proven to be a very, very serious team.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: The Bills are very good.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: Uh you can't spit on a guy.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: That's the lowest of low.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_03: You don't do that.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: You know, you you know, you take a man's wife, you take a man's wife before you spit on him.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: It's the biggest form of disrespect.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: And he got a one-game suspension, so I'm sure he's gonna learn, and he's gonna come back a new man now in his 12th out of 15.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_01: He's gonna learn.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_03: Um, can I just say I'm surprised that the Bills are doing well with Joe Brady?
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_03: Like, I I was kind of against this hire.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: I thought this hire was gonna be more of the same with the Bills.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_03: And and I mean, listen, Sean McDermott wasn't necessarily necessarily a bad coach, and he was judged more for what he was not doing in the in the postseason.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: So I guess we'll the jury's still out on Joe Brady.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: I thought the Bills were gonna take a step back, and they haven't.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: So I they're a nice surprise.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: Not a nice surprise is getting a loogie in the face from CJ Gardner Johnson.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_03: Better he's one of those where better football player than person.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which when you break it down, try all of them.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_03: When people when people are like, you know, he's a great football player, but he's a better person.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_03: This guy isn't.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_03: This guy is a better football player than a person.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Much, much, much, much better.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_00: That's a good point.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Bills, it is interesting with Joe Brady because I kind of didn't know what to expect.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: And I I remain cautiously optimistic because I do want to see Josh Allen win a Super Bowl.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: I feel like he and that fan base, you want to talk about tortured fan bases in the NFL.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: The building up for great Super Bowl losses.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: But I just feel like there's still some holes in that defense, Jake, that might rear their ugly head in the postseason.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: But you can't argue with what they've done so far this regular season.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk, we just were talking about a great team in the Bills.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_01: Let's flip the script and talk about the FC East.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: My goodness, is this division bad?
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_01: First ever division to go two straight weeks without winning a game.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: And yes, two teams did play each other.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: The Commanders and Giants tied last week.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: It's a surprise to absolute nobody that the Cowboys were America's best team in August.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: We said on this program, let's hold the phones.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: They're always good this time of year.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: When the sun's out and it's 88 degrees, Cowboys are great.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: When the pads start to crunch and the leaves start to fall, they're they're a Fugazi every year.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: What do you make of this division?
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: The Eagles are just so banged up.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to do with them.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: What what do you make of the NFC least?
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_03: The NFC League, yeah, they're bad.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_03: They're they're the worst division in football.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_03: Like they're they're like NFC South bad.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_03: Eagles are banged up.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_03: Cowboys are bad.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_03: By the way, Cowboys, longest drought of not making the NFC Championship.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_03: And in the NFC.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: Longest drought.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: It's just hilarious just to think about the Cowboys again not being good at everyone hyping up in August.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_03: For again, a organization that has some that has the longest drought of the NFC Championship, and they're in a conference.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: Luckily, though, they're in a conference that is a hot steaming pile of garbage in July.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: So they still have a shot.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: Now, the Eagles, the Jalen Hurts, obviously hoping he gets well soon, aside from football.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: But the Eagles, now it's not just Jalen Hurts that's banged up.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: They are completely banged up.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_01: I still think they might win that division.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: But if you had a gun to your head right now, Jake, who are you picking to win that NFC East?
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, they're all terrible.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: Can I talk you to JJ McCarthy?
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: No, I think yeah, I I I think it's I think it's gonna be the Giants.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: My goodness.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_02: Unless unless Tanner McKee can turn it around.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_01: Are you a believer?
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_03: I am.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_03: But I think, but the problem is, I believe in Tanner McKee.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: The problem is that offense has looked so bad, and the offensive line has been just despicable that I think that's gonna hinder everything else.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_03: Because that that they were look they look bad with Jalen Hurts, man.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: And like again, Jalen has his ups and downs, but like guy outperformed Mahomes in two Super Bowls.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_03: Like it's there somewhere.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_03: It's there somewhere.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_03: So I believe in McKee.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_03: I don't believe in the rest of the offense.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: I think that's probably the correct takeaway.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about one more team.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_01: Probably the biggest story in the NFL this past weekend was the Cardinals upsetting the Rams as 12 and a half point underdogs.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: Not really sure anybody saw that one coming.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: That seemed to be the get-right spot for the Rams.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_01: I sat here like a clown last week and bought up a ton of Rams shares, as did my co-host Michael Blum.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_01: We got our pants pulled down just a little bit.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: And Sean McVay came in, and I've seen this film before.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: He comes into this press conference, just he has to be on Adderall.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: He's on something.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: It's not natural how he comes in.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_01: He is jacked up and he looks great.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: He looks physically great, but his mouth's moving a mile a minute, and he is pissed off about the entire operation.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: I guess my question to you is are the Rams bad?
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_03: You know, the Rams remind me of, and I I think people have made this comparison, so I don't want to say like I've coined it or anything like that.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_03: But this Rams team reminds me of the Eagles dream team.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_03: Uh remember with with Vic and Omni Osamois and a bunch of those guys.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_03: It's like it was really the beginning of the end of Andy Reid and the Eagles, Andy Reed's Eagles.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_03: But here's the thing.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_03: If they win the games they're supposed to and they split with Seattle, okay, that gives them nine wins.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: So okay, if they win this game, because they have four games coming up where they should win them all.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_03: If they split with Seattle, win the games they're supposed to, they'll get to nine wins.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_03: If they sweep Seattle, they get to ten.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_03: Or if they don't sweep Seattle, they beat.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: The Chiefs, Niners, or Packers.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_03: One of those games.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_03: They get to 10.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_03: You know, they get to 10 wins.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_03: So it's still in front of them, man.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_03: It's still in front of them for their for them to make the playoffs.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_03: But they really don't have any room, much room for error.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_03: But this does remind me of like Eagles Dream Team where they're just gonna go nine and you know, they're gonna go 500 or whatever it is now, a nine and eight.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can't you can't finish 500 anymore.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_03: So I feel like they might go nine and eight and just miss the playoffs.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_03: Because remember, the NFC is stacked.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_01: Yes, and and that division that they're in doesn't help their case at all.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_01: And then the NFC North might have three or four playoff teams in it itself.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_01: So they do need all of them.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: Everyone in the north.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_01: Everyone in the north.
