Transcript
- 1:04Emeal Zwayne: I'm reading a book where the author was talking about impact in your neighborhood.
- 1:09Emeal Zwayne: He was talking about how they lived in a neighborhood where all the backyard, it was like in a circle around a lake and all the sliding glass doors were backed up to the lake so everyone could look into everyone else's house in the evenings as they're doing stuff.
- 1:24Emeal Zwayne: Hard to commit murder, no kidding.
- 1:26Emeal Zwayne: But he talked about how one neighbor was walking by and they just came up to him.
- 1:34Emeal Zwayne: They said you know what I just got to tell you when I see you and your family every day, because the point he was making was that his family does a lot of nothing.
- 1:43Emeal Zwayne: That was what he said.
- 1:44Emeal Zwayne: We do a lot of nothing, which means they just hang out, they play games, they worship together, they read the word, they walk, they play outside.
- 1:52Emeal Zwayne: See them in each other's pajamas yeah, yeah, shorty pajamas.
- 1:57Emeal Zwayne: So anyway, so he goes.
- 2:01Emeal Zwayne: He said the neighbor comes up to him and he said you know what I just got to tell you?
- 2:04Emeal Zwayne: When I see you outside with your family all the time, I just got to tell you, when I see you outside with your family all the time, which you are doing, what you guys do, I don't know what it is.
- 2:14Emeal Zwayne: This is one of those easy moments.
- 2:18Ray Comfort: But, it makes me think of God.
- 2:20Emeal Zwayne: It makes me think of God.
- 2:21Emeal Zwayne: He says I don't know why that's awesome.
- 2:24Ray Comfort: Did he weep when he said that, or was you weeping when you were thinking of thinking of that?
- 2:27Emeal Zwayne: I'm replaying it no, but it just hit me.
- 2:31Emeal Zwayne: It makes me think of God and guys.
- 2:43Emeal Zwayne: We can't underestimate how our lives, genuinely lived for the Lord in our neighborhood, can have a massive spiritual impact.
- 2:49Emeal Zwayne: Name this event Shlabungzu Balafanfifi the Olympics Shrabamba Ulu Palalabamba.
- 3:00Oscar Navarro: Palalabamba.
- 3:02Emeal Zwayne: Irbatunti Ilitisango Shlavazizi.
- 3:05Emeal Zwayne: Wow, Come on guys, Come on guys, Come on guys.
- 3:10Ray Comfort: The Idiots Convention.
- 3:12Emeal Zwayne: Graduation ceremonies.
- 3:15Oscar Navarro: How were?
- 3:16Emeal Zwayne: we supposed to get that from that Oscar names and clapping Shabloomsy was a name.
- 3:23Ray Comfort: That was so confusing.
- 3:25Emeal Zwayne: Let me tell you there were names much worse than that at this last graduation ceremony.
- 3:28Ray Comfort: I really enjoyed the graduation ceremony I went to.
- 3:32Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, well, I went to my son Luke's graduation from college and someone has to.
- 3:40Emeal Zwayne: I mean this would be like you know, I don't know, discovering like the law of gravity, or discovering what I mean.
- 3:48Emeal Zwayne: This would be like, yeah, like the Internet being discovered, someone what I mean.
- 3:50Emeal Zwayne: This would be like, yeah, like the internet being discovered.
- 3:51Emeal Zwayne: Someone has to figure out a way to relieve people of the torment of sitting through like a 10 billion names yeah, right, you take your laptop and you do editing would.
- 4:04Emeal Zwayne: I was wondering, ray what were you?
- 4:06Emeal Zwayne: doing at the last graduation ceremony you were at Editing videos.
- 4:09Ray Comfort: Yeah, down the back seat, yeah, and it made it bearable.
- 4:14Emeal Zwayne: I really enjoyed the whole thing because my mind was occupied and I had my spy, who took a picture of Ray in a graduation ceremony, editing on his computer.
- 4:22Mark Spence: Well, no one knew, oh, no one knew.
- 4:23Mark Spence: It's right down the back.
- 4:24Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, no one knew, especially since you had your ear pieces in with the strand going down.
- 4:28Ray Comfort: It was one ear piece.
- 4:29Ray Comfort: They probably thought I was deaf.
- 4:31Mark Spence: Oh, just one.
- 4:31Mark Spence: Ray officiated a wedding and he was doing the same thing, just editing on his laptop.
- 4:36Ray Comfort: Do you take?
- 4:37Ray Comfort: Hang on a second.
- 4:38Ray Comfort: Do you take this?
- 4:40Emeal Zwayne: hang on as the couple's taking communion.
- 4:43Emeal Zwayne: He pulls it out as they're trying to light the candle.
- 4:45Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, no, as they're trying to light the candle, yeah, oh, no one asks me yeah, so it's torturous.
- 4:53Oscar Navarro: Sidebar Long time listener who has awkward names.
- 4:57Mark Spence: Would you?
- 4:57Oscar Navarro: write us and explain to us how much pain and suffering you experience when EZ makes fun of you.
- 5:05Emeal Zwayne: And maybe he'll pay for your therapy.
- 5:06Emeal Zwayne: I'm sure there's someone out there named Dwalabanga Balazansusu Shlafitsi.
- 5:12Oscar Navarro: Here comes the emails.
- 5:16Emeal Zwayne: Seriously, though, guys, you must hate graduation ceremonies for the most part.
- 5:20Emeal Zwayne: I'm talking about when the names start going.
- 5:22Emeal Zwayne: We sat there for probably 45 minutes, and, of course, Because your son's last name is Zwayne.
- 5:28Mark Spence: Oh, that's it.
- 5:30Mark Spence: Jonathan's name was.
- 5:31Ray Comfort: Comfort, we'll throw up the front.
- 5:33Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, right, yeah, I can't remember if they did them in order of the last names or not.
- 5:39Emeal Zwayne: Whatever, in the final analysis, you end up sitting there because you're waiting for your graduates.
- 5:43Emeal Zwayne: You're going to go see them, just name after name after name.
- 5:49Mark Spence: Like going to go see them, just name after name after name, like there's got to be a solution.
- 5:52Mark Spence: Is there one mark?
- 5:52Mark Spence: I don't know, but I did see a viral video a couple weeks ago about a graduation where this person was absolutely destroying every single person's name, like john smith was like.
- 6:03Mark Spence: It was so bad, I think I saw that.
- 6:07Ray Comfort: I think.
- 6:07Ray Comfort: I saw that yeah.
- 6:08Emeal Zwayne: That hurt.
- 6:09Emeal Zwayne: That makes me happy, so bad.
- 6:10Emeal Zwayne: No, what Cal State, fullerton, where Luke graduated, is.
- 6:14Emeal Zwayne: They pre-recorded the names and you can tell, and they had like a QR thing system with their thing so it like put them in the order.
- 6:22Ray Comfort: You know what the problem is.
- 6:23Ray Comfort: You're getting used to double speed.
- 6:29Oscar Navarro: Oh I think.
- 6:29Ray Comfort: I think, yeah, Everyone's just running through it.
- 6:30Ray Comfort: I do everything double speed when I check videos.
- 6:32Emeal Zwayne: Oh, I mean seriously, why even go?
- 6:33Emeal Zwayne: Just record?
- 6:34Emeal Zwayne: Record your graduate going on stage with their name and then everyone plays it at home.
- 6:39Emeal Zwayne: It's three seconds.
- 6:40Emeal Zwayne: You celebrate now and you're done.
- 6:42Oscar Navarro: I will say our kids, because because one of our kids is in choir and the other one is in band and once my daughter's choir song is done, I'm out of there, You're done.
- 6:52Emeal Zwayne: I'm not gonna wait two hours to watch your kids sing.
- 6:54Emeal Zwayne: Well, the thing is again, you're gonna wait for your graduate to meet them afterwards and take pictures, but anyway, it's torment and torture.
- 7:01Emeal Zwayne: I mean, are there certain events that you guys really love going to, that are hard for you, that you guys really loathe going to that are hard for you All of them.
- 7:09Oscar Navarro: I was going to say, let's just take care of that.
- 7:11Emeal Zwayne: Meetings, yeah or places.
- 7:13Ray Comfort: Meetings in general.
- 7:14Emeal Zwayne: Like DMV, oh, dmv.
- 7:16Ray Comfort: The sloth.
- 7:17Oscar Navarro: Hometown buffet.
- 7:20Mark Spence: The DMV of restaurants Disneyland that was good.
- 7:24Mark Spence: Really, mark, yeah, I can't do Disneyland it's so crowded.
- 7:27Mark Spence: I love amusement.
- 7:30Mark Spence: It really I can't do disneyland.
- 7:30Mark Spence: Oh, it's so crowded, it's like amusement parks.
- 7:31Mark Spence: It's like costco started having rides.
- 7:32Mark Spence: You just you get behind someone.
- 7:33Mark Spence: It's just like oh okay, you know.
- 7:37Emeal Zwayne: Good point though, mark.
- 7:38Emeal Zwayne: I do have to say that the line waiting thing is insane.
- 7:41Emeal Zwayne: Uh, we went to.
- 7:42Emeal Zwayne: We went to knott's berry farm a while ago.
- 7:46Emeal Zwayne: We we have passes, kylie and I, but we went with some relatives, I think.
- 7:50Emeal Zwayne: Which for overseas listeners is like Disneyland down a little yeah, but we bought a fast pass kind of thing, you know where.
- 8:00Emeal Zwayne: You just don't wait in line.
- 8:01Ray Comfort: They give you a motorbike.
- 8:02Ray Comfort: They give you a motorbike.
- 8:05Emeal Zwayne: But the thing costs more than our annual pass.
- 8:07Emeal Zwayne: I think an annual pass at Kn knots like 120 bucks and this thing was like a hundred and something, but you know, there were relatives here from from, uh, you know, new Zealand and we wanted to bless them and so we did it.
- 8:19Emeal Zwayne: But I mean, it was, it was awesome there were crowds, but we just got on every ride, no lines.
- 8:23Ray Comfort: Any dirty looks.
- 8:25Emeal Zwayne: You know what?
- 8:25Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, you know what.
- 8:26Emeal Zwayne: The dirty looks you get for in the airport is.
- 8:28Emeal Zwayne: There's this one service where they take you to the front of the line, and I've gotten it because you know, with traveling you can't miss things.
- 8:34Emeal Zwayne: Oh clear.
- 8:35Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, oh boy, you've gotten dirty looks, haven't you Every time I use clear.
- 8:45Oscar Navarro: In fact, I'm not renewing it.
- 8:45Oscar Navarro: Yeah, I didn't experienced it, I'm just not paying attention, yeah.
- 8:52Emeal Zwayne: So, anyway, I hate doing the podcast.
- 8:54Emeal Zwayne: All right, friends, A cool, classy comment.
- 8:58Emeal Zwayne: This is from podcast at livingwaterscom, by the way, that's where you can send us your comments and thoughts and accusations.
- 9:07Emeal Zwayne: Hello, friends, they said they spelt it that way.
- 9:09Emeal Zwayne: By the way, Hello frowns, I wanted to say how encouraged I am by you guys, just from listening to your podcast and watching your videos.
- 9:18Emeal Zwayne: I have watched your videos for a while now and God has used them to show me how to properly share the gospel.
- 9:22Emeal Zwayne: I'm 17 years old and I'm attending a public school, but that doesn't stop me from sharing it.
- 9:26Emeal Zwayne: Recently, I had a friend and a family friend pass away in a car crash.
- 9:30Emeal Zwayne: I prayed all through the night that the crash happened and the days after it that God would use my knowledge of the gospel of which the presentation of the gospel I gained from Living Waters to reach out to others, and he did.
- 9:43Emeal Zwayne: I witnessed to a couple of my baseball buddies a couple days later, as well as a whole congregation at a prayer group.
- 9:48Emeal Zwayne: I praise God through all of it that he gave not only me the strength to stand firm in my faith, but for my friends to have open hearts.
- 9:56Emeal Zwayne: With all this said.
- 9:57Emeal Zwayne: Thank you, Ray, for showing me how to be bold in the faith.
- 10:00Emeal Zwayne: Thank you, Easy, for keeping the mood bright.
- 10:02Emeal Zwayne: Thank you, Mark, for giving me thoughts to ponder on while listening to the podcast, and thank you, Oscar, for the input and the thought provoking points you give as well.
- 10:10Emeal Zwayne: God used you to start a spark in me to use my life for Him.
- 10:15Emeal Zwayne: Praise the Lord.
- 10:16Emeal Zwayne: That's from Garrett Wiersma from Melba, Idaho.
- 10:21Ray Comfort: God bless you, Garrett.
- 10:22Emeal Zwayne: Garrett.
- 10:22Emeal Zwayne: this is why we do what we do, and thanks for taking the time to write and let us know, and thanks for sharing the gospel Again.
- 10:28Emeal Zwayne: Guys, we talk about a lot of different topics, but the heartbeat behind our ministry is the gospel, and so when we get letters like this, this stirs us to keep doing more of this, because we want you guys out there activated.
- 10:41Emeal Zwayne: Just think if you didn't do that, Garrett, these people would not have heard the gospel.
- 10:45Emeal Zwayne: And so thanks for listening, Thanks for writing in and keep going.
- 10:48Emeal Zwayne: A radically revolutionary resource because this podcast is brought to you by God has a Wonderful Plan for your Life, Ray.
- 10:59Emeal Zwayne: I was thinking about this book, and when did you get the idea of Stephen being stoned on the front of the book with that title?
- 11:06Ray Comfort: It wasn't my idea.
- 11:07Ray Comfort: It was the Pharisees that did that.
- 11:09Ray Comfort: Oh, you didn't tell them to stone Stephen.
- 11:10Ray Comfort: No, no they just went straight ahead and stoned him.
- 11:12Ray Comfort: You told them to stone Stephen.
- 11:13Ray Comfort: You might like to blame it on me, but I had nothing to do with it.
- 11:17Ray Comfort: Blame it on the ring.
- 11:18Ray Comfort: Yeah, it was just obvious.
- 11:29Emeal Zwayne: I mean he's the epitome of not a good time in the gospel.
- 11:30Emeal Zwayne: I have to admit I was telling the title of your book to someone the other day and I felt weird after I told them the title because they're thinking Ray's a seeker, sensitive guy.
- 11:36Emeal Zwayne: There's a little subtitle, I know, but I don't remember the subtitle.
- 11:41Oscar Navarro: I do that all the time too.
- 11:41Oscar Navarro: Yeah, like I can't just say the title, I have to explain the title Right.
- 11:49Ray Comfort: So I'm like, yeah, raised by God has a wonderful plan for your life.
- 11:51Ray Comfort: And I'm like subtitle is the Myth of the Modern Message.
- 11:52Ray Comfort: Yeah, and then you explain that Stephen's being stoned to death on the front, and it wasn't fun.
- 11:55Emeal Zwayne: So check it out, friends, you're going to love it.
- 11:57Emeal Zwayne: I mean, it really is a revolutionary book Very little, so, yeah.
- 12:02Emeal Zwayne: So make sure to check that out, along with the Evidence Study Bible and the Living Waters mug.
- 12:10Emeal Zwayne: All at, living Waters, don't come.
- 12:12Emeal Zwayne: Oh, I was trying to be normal Oscar.
- 12:15Emeal Zwayne: Yip Right Mug.
- 12:15Emeal Zwayne: Oh, the Yip Right Mug, it's coming, the Yip Right Mug.
- 12:19Emeal Zwayne: Just check, friends, you'll see if that's out.
- 12:21Emeal Zwayne: Collect them, get them all.
- 12:25Ray Comfort: Get them all.
- 12:26Ray Comfort: Get all 50 and you get a free car, oh yeah.
- 12:29Emeal Zwayne: All right friends.
- 12:31Emeal Zwayne: Today we're talking about how to be a spiritually effective neighbor.
- 12:36Emeal Zwayne: Won't you be my neighbor?
- 12:38Ray Comfort: What Ray Just leave the neighborhood, leave, leave, leave, leave.
- 12:47Emeal Zwayne: You've got to explain that, the things you never forget.
- 12:50Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, mark Ray and I used to go to the courthouse across from our ministry and preach the gospel.
- 12:55Emeal Zwayne: And Ray was preaching one day and this guy was sitting there.
- 13:01Emeal Zwayne: He just kept saying leave.
- 13:04Emeal Zwayne: And did I say you sound like a cow?
- 13:07Ray Comfort: I think I did you.
- 13:08Ray Comfort: Did you sound like a cow he milked, did you?
- 13:11Emeal Zwayne: did you sound like?
- 13:11Emeal Zwayne: A cow he milked her, but he kept doing it again and, again and again.
- 13:15Emeal Zwayne: Leave, oh, those days at the courthouse, man, those were man, those were the days.
- 13:25Ray Comfort: Those were the days, my friend.
- 13:26Emeal Zwayne: And it was the day when I said I can't believe we get to do this, that we got shut down.
- 13:30Ray Comfort: That's why I said stop keep saying that Easy yeah, because, Ray's, it's your fault, Name it, claim it.
- 13:34Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, ray's name.
- 13:36Emeal Zwayne: It claim it, guy superstitious Ray.
- 13:39Ray Comfort: No, I threw a black cat over my shoulder on a Friday with some salt and it canceled what you said.
- 13:46Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, so yeah, how to be a spiritually effective neighbor.
- 13:50Emeal Zwayne: It's kind of weird.
- 13:52Emeal Zwayne: You think about that.
- 13:53Emeal Zwayne: You live, you camp, basically in a permanent structure next to people.
- 13:59Emeal Zwayne: It's like your neighborhood is like a campground in a sense, and you got these people that you just live by and you see, and yet we live in a day and age where most of us, sadly, have hardly ever talked to our neighbors.
- 14:14Emeal Zwayne: And we are the light of the world, we are the salt of the earth and God has pre-appointed the boundaries of our habitation.
- 14:24Emeal Zwayne: You think about that.
- 14:25Emeal Zwayne: He has put us where we're at.
- 14:32Ray Comfort: And we have the opportunity to be a witness and have impact.
- 14:33Ray Comfort: It's amazing how a barking dog can cause neighbor to talk to neighbor Right.
- 14:38Emeal Zwayne: Unless there's a problem, then we're ready to talk, but just the opportunity to show warmth and kindness.
- 14:46Emeal Zwayne: The other day I was at home and I think this is a good thing to do.
- 14:52Emeal Zwayne: We're gonna talk about different ideas, but premeditating kindness.
- 14:57Emeal Zwayne: I think spur of the moment kindness is awesome, spontaneous kindness is awesome.
- 15:04Emeal Zwayne: But sometimes when you plan something, I think it can have substance to it.
- 15:08Emeal Zwayne: And so I remember one day pulling into my driveway and seeing one of my neighbors and they were.
- 15:13Emeal Zwayne: They were out there interacting with with their kid and they were throwing the baseball around.
- 15:16Emeal Zwayne: And they do that all the time.
- 15:17Emeal Zwayne: I see him out there doing playing basketball, throwing the you know the baseball around, and I've noted it in my mind the next time I see my neighbor I'm going to, I'm going to say something to him about it, and so the other day I saw him and I went over.
- 15:33Emeal Zwayne: I said look, I just want to let you know how touched I am by what I see you doing out here with your kids all the time.
- 15:35Emeal Zwayne: That is that is so rare and I'm telling you they are blessed to have you as their father and I wanted to, you know, use that moment to like just it was genuine.
- 15:50Emeal Zwayne: I wasn't making it up.
- 15:50Emeal Zwayne: I really was moved and touched, but I thought this is a moment where I can have impact and build a bridge with my neighbor and love them.
- 15:53Emeal Zwayne: But he didn't speak English, so it was really weird.
- 15:54Mark Spence: Yeah, he kept looking at me.
- 15:56Emeal Zwayne: He kept looking at me and he pulled out his gun.
- 15:58Ray Comfort: I want to tell you something.
- 15:59Ray Comfort: It wasn't premeditated.
- 16:00Ray Comfort: We noticed that Sue's washing machine, or our washing machine, was getting rusty, so we went to Home Depot and ordered another one, a brand new, modern one, which was wonderful, and it sounded like a 747 taking off because our washing machine is right at the kitchen and it was just awful Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 16:21Ray Comfort: Like I'm not exaggerating, it was just awful.
- 16:22Ray Comfort: The whole house kind of shook.
- 16:24Ray Comfort: So I went online and there was a lot of people on YouTube saying my washing machine is going boom, boom and they're making the noise, and then showing the noise, and I went back.
- 16:34Ray Comfort: So I went and bought another one and they said they'll bring it in a month and I thought what are we going to do with this first noisy washing machine?
- 16:37Ray Comfort: Wait, you didn't return it.
- 16:38Ray Comfort: No, it was too late.
- 16:39Ray Comfort: What Couldn't return it?
- 16:41Ray Comfort: So you had to buy two.
- 16:41Ray Comfort: Yeah, they would replace it with another model of the same thing.
- 16:46Ray Comfort: That's all they'd do, and I didn't want another one.
- 16:48Ray Comfort: What?
- 16:48Ray Comfort: They would replace it, but it would be the same model.
- 16:55Mark Spence: So gave it to the neighbors Savage yes, I did.
- 16:57Emeal Zwayne: Savage.
- 16:58Mark Spence: Yeah.
- 16:59Emeal Zwayne: Hate your neighbor unlike yourself.
- 17:00Ray Comfort: They use it a lot.
- 17:01Emeal Zwayne: We can hear it, I was going to say wow, Ray, Thank you for the curse.
- 17:09Ray Comfort: I did explain their washing machine.
- 17:10Ray Comfort: They do their washing out the back.
- 17:12Emeal Zwayne: Oh, got it, so it can handle it.
- 17:13Emeal Zwayne: So they annoy their other neighbors.
- 17:15Ray Comfort: Yes, drowns out the barking dog.
- 17:17Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, yeah, but you know, that's something that's huge, Oscar, you what?
- 17:22Ray Comfort: their washing machine, yeah.
- 17:25Emeal Zwayne: Ray, oscar, you've always been a great example of just being intentional.
- 17:32Emeal Zwayne: I think that's really the key word in light of what we're talking about today Intentionality, finding a pathway toward intentionality, because if we're not intentional, nothing ultimately gets done.
- 17:40Emeal Zwayne: But I know that's been a big deal for you and you've seen a lot of fruit from it, oscar.
- 17:44Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, we have.
- 17:50Oscar Navarro: I think we're moved by as I read books and commentaries on what the early church looked like and how effective they were.
- 17:53Oscar Navarro: As I've said before on this podcast, many episodes ago, I'm fascinated by the early church because they came in to a cultural setting that was so antithetical to gospel, or to Christian ethics and morality, and certainly to the gospel to gospel or to Christian ethics and morality, and certainly to the gospel.
- 18:08Oscar Navarro: I mean, if we think our culture is antithetical or post-Christian, they would put our culture to shame in regards to their sexual ethics, their moral ethics, on and on we can go.
- 18:21Oscar Navarro: And yet, in the midst of that, the early church exploded and grew rapidly.
- 18:28Oscar Navarro: And so, to me, what were they doing?
- 18:30Oscar Navarro: What can we learn from them?
- 18:32Oscar Navarro: And one of the things is exactly what you're talking about, ez is the intentionality of your neighbor.
- 18:38Oscar Navarro: I mean, you got to remember that they grew up in mostly small villages or areas of influence, and so there was no.
- 18:45Oscar Navarro: You know, you didn't spend much time inside your home.
- 18:48Oscar Navarro: Your home is where you slept, where you cooked and where you cleaned.
- 18:51Oscar Navarro: There was no living room with a couch and a TV.
- 18:53Oscar Navarro: There was no entertainment to keep you insulated, rather in order for you to be entertained in order for your mind to be stimulated, and 90% of your daily chores was outside rubbing elbows with your neighbor, and so the human that's a funny saying when you think about it.
- 19:09Oscar Navarro: Rubbing elbows there you go, I just sit around and
- 19:11Oscar Navarro: literally hey, I want to rub elbows with my neighbor.
- 19:14Ray Comfort: Come over here.
- 19:16Emeal Zwayne: Past time, john, bring your elbow, join us in here.
- 19:21Oscar Navarro: But I think the Lord intended for us to do life in community with one another, and we've built this modern life to be isolated and alone, and, on that matter, loneliness is a new major issue for America.
- 19:35Oscar Navarro: So many people, especially younger people, are reported feeling alone, like longing for meaningful relationships.
- 19:43Oscar Navarro: And so for us to be witnesses, not only to proclaim the gospel, but to be witnesses of humility, of an integrity, of hospitality, of kindness, which is what you did.
- 19:58Oscar Navarro: Easy to walk outside our front doors and to know the names of our neighbors.
- 20:03Oscar Navarro: Like, can we just start there?
- 20:05Oscar Navarro: How many Americans don't know the names of their neighbors?
- 20:09Oscar Navarro: How many of your neighbors have you had in your home for a meal?
- 20:15Oscar Navarro: How often have you practiced hospitality?
- 20:20Oscar Navarro: Rosario Butterfield wrote a book.
- 20:21Oscar Navarro: It's a great book and it's called the Gospel Comes With the House Key, and the point she made is that once we preach the gospel, the next step is to invite people into our homes and at our tables and make them a meal.
- 20:35Oscar Navarro: The Lord means to use you in your right now, immediate neighborhood more than he intends to use you on social media.
- 20:43Oscar Navarro: Here's more where my rant will end.
- 20:45Oscar Navarro: So many people think to themselves oh, I want to be an effective witness, so I'm going to try to blow up a social media platform.
- 20:53Oscar Navarro: They want to be known by somebody across the other side of the world and they don't even know their own neighbors.
- 20:58Emeal Zwayne: Start with your neighbor, preach man.
- 21:00Emeal Zwayne: That's something I talk about all the time, even when it comes to the gospel and you know that's something I talk about all the time.
- 21:05Emeal Zwayne: I mean even when it comes to the gospel, ray.
- 21:10Emeal Zwayne: You know, people want to go and be missionaries in other parts of the world when they're not reaching their neighbors, when they're not a witness in their neighborhood, in their area.
- 21:16Ray Comfort: You talked about it before the famous saying you don't have to cross the sea to be a missionary, you just have to see the cross.
- 21:20Ray Comfort: And I never forget that when Rachel I think she was 17, she went with a missionary organization to Calcutta or India and then went up on a hill and prayed over the city, and I think you can do that here.
- 21:31Ray Comfort: You can pray over Calcutta on a map.
- 21:33Ray Comfort: Jesus said go into all the world and preach the gospel.
- 21:36Ray Comfort: He preached the gospel.
- 21:38Ray Comfort: That's what the world needs to hear, and so whatever you said was really good and I've answered it.
- 21:47Emeal Zwayne: That's how it goes.
- 21:48Emeal Zwayne: That's how it goes here.
- 21:49Emeal Zwayne: But no, yeah, it's so true in that we don't realize the value of small acts of kindness within our neighborhood.
- 22:03Emeal Zwayne: Look, as a ministry, we talk very much about not getting sucked into the friendship evangelism mindset for evangelism, which means that's all I do exclusively.
- 22:15Emeal Zwayne: But don't misunderstand us in saying that you're not to build friendships with those that are around you and those that you're around, like your neighbors and those that are in your circle of influence at work and family members and stuff like that.
- 22:29Emeal Zwayne: Of course, you don't just walk up and blast them and that's it.
- 22:33Emeal Zwayne: That's it, I'm done.
- 22:33Emeal Zwayne: No, you're building rapport, right, Ray?
- 22:36Emeal Zwayne: Rapport that will give you that openness from them, because it's different than the stranger you walk up to on the street, wouldn't you say?
- 22:44Ray Comfort: Yeah, often we use eggs with our neighbors.
- 22:47Ray Comfort: Our chickens lay eggs, which is great.
- 22:49Emeal Zwayne: You egg their house.
- 22:50Ray Comfort: I throw them at them.
- 22:51Oscar Navarro: You give them terrible washing machines and then you egg their homes.
- 22:54Emeal Zwayne: I'm not sure I want to be your neighbor.
- 22:56Ray Comfort: Ray.
- 22:58Emeal Zwayne: I know yeah, we've got an empty neighborhood.
- 23:00Ray Comfort: Yeah, but I love my neighbors.
- 23:01Ray Comfort: We've got also Jehovah's Witness on one side that aren't too friendly, but they're okay Catholics on the other side, hindu in front of us and Indonesian to one side.
- 23:12Emeal Zwayne: So it's a Wait.
- 23:13Emeal Zwayne: What happened?
- 23:14Emeal Zwayne: Why didn't you tell us about the atheists underneath your house?
- 23:18Ray Comfort: Atheists underneath the house, living under your floorboards.
- 23:26Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, it's so good, and I think of Matthew 5, 14 to 16.
- 23:30Ray Comfort: You see, I just love the way, when you've got nothing to say, you can fill it in with yeah, it's so good, Matthew 15.
- 23:38Emeal Zwayne: You're very gifted.
- 23:39Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, it's a spiritual gift Matthew 5, 14 to 16.
- 23:43Emeal Zwayne: You are the light of the world.
- 23:45Emeal Zwayne: A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
- 23:48Emeal Zwayne: Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but under a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
- 23:54Emeal Zwayne: Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
- 24:01Emeal Zwayne: I mean, this is the right time to show off, in a sense, but you show off so that you point to the Lord.
- 24:10Mark Spence: Yeah, if you want to be a spiritually effective neighbor, you need to be a physically effective neighbor.
- 24:15Mark Spence: You need to be rich and good works.
- 24:16Mark Spence: If you're making brownies, make brownies for the people across the street.
- 24:20Mark Spence: If you're buying a plant for your house, why not buy another plant for your neighbor across the street?
- 24:24Mark Spence: If you're buying a plant for your house, why not buy another plant for your neighbor across the street?
- 24:25Mark Spence: Washing machine If you're buying one washing machine, buy a second washing machine.
- 24:29Mark Spence: Yeah, being rich in good works is a great way to reach your neighbors.
- 24:34Mark Spence: You know, people tend to park inside their garage and there's no waving, there's no interaction.
- 24:41Mark Spence: That's a shame.
- 24:42Mark Spence: You know, if you go to whitepagescom and you type in your own address, it'll give you the names and the addresses of all your neighbors.
- 24:49Mark Spence: So Oscar was saying we don't even know the names of our neighbors.
- 24:52Mark Spence: We've lived next to them for 15 years.
- 24:54Mark Spence: Well, that's a great way to start.
- 24:56Mark Spence: That's a great place to start.
- 24:58Emeal Zwayne: If they have a dog White pages, white pages.
- 25:00Emeal Zwayne: Interesting Whitepagescom.
- 25:02Emeal Zwayne: They sound racist to me but it is.
- 25:06Mark Spence: That's, in fact, how we learned all of our neighbors' names and stuff, and then we gave a little care package to every one of our neighbors.
- 25:12Mark Spence: I remember when you did that Gift cards and stuff.
- 25:13Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I didn't know you could do that with White Pages, Mark yeah.
- 25:17Mark Spence: It's called reverse lookup.
- 25:18Emeal Zwayne: Oh, okay, you know, I mean, I knew the importance of this immediately.
- 25:22Emeal Zwayne: But whenever we've moved into a neighborhood, we'll go around, we'll meet all the neighbors, we'll introduce ourselves.
- 25:31Emeal Zwayne: Do you walk right outside and go?
- 25:35Oscar Navarro: hello friends, hello friends.
- 25:36Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I did.
- 25:36Emeal Zwayne: And then suddenly there were 20 for sale signs on my neighbor's lawns.
- 25:41Emeal Zwayne: But no, and we've tried to time it when we've moved into a new neighborhood around Christmas.
- 25:44Emeal Zwayne: So you know, and we've tried to time it when we've moved into a new neighborhood around Christmas.
- 25:46Emeal Zwayne: So then you know, hey, we're new in the neighborhood, just wanted to wish you Merry Christmas and we've written a letter with the gospel in it.
- 25:52Ray Comfort: You try and time it to buy a house just before Christmas, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:55Ray Comfort: All the time that's our Christmas gift to ourselves A new house every year, jingle bells, jingle bells, yeah, just to get the witness to neighbors, you buy a house and away you go this really hit Mark.
- 26:10Emeal Zwayne: He's still a woman His realtor loves it yeah.
- 26:14Emeal Zwayne: No, but I'm saying, you know, usually we'll wait until it gets close, even after moving to the neighborhood, and then we'll give them a gospel of John and, you know, a candy cane with it or whatever.
- 26:22Emeal Zwayne: But when we get their names, I just have a notes list and I put my neighbor's names with their address, and so I remember it.
- 26:31Emeal Zwayne: And so, because I don't know if you guys have sensed this, when I don't remember someone's name, I have a lack of confidence to approach them.
- 26:38Emeal Zwayne: I just feel weird.
- 26:38Emeal Zwayne: That's true.
- 26:47Ray Comfort: Because you know you've got to.
- 26:48Ray Comfort: You know it's normal to use their name at some point in the conversation, but when you don't know it, but man, that's why I never talked to.
- 26:52Emeal Zwayne: Ray, thingy is always a good substitute, thingy, thingy, but but and and you know, you guys know, when you say someone's name and they're not expecting you to, they lie to you.
- 26:59Emeal Zwayne: Whoa, you remembered my name, you know.
- 27:02Oscar Navarro: So I try to do that with our servers.
- 27:04Emeal Zwayne: I try to remember their names.
- 27:05Ray Comfort: I do it with my wife.
- 27:06Oscar Navarro: That's a good call.
- 27:07Emeal Zwayne: Which one, your first wife, number four, 600, 6, 7,000 billion trillion.
- 27:12Oscar Navarro: I think there's another.
- 27:13Oscar Navarro: So there's being hospitable in regards to inviting them into your home, but then there's also a form of hospitality in which you can serve your neighborhood.
- 27:21Oscar Navarro: So, like we like to throw block parties, halloween comes around and we have a huge potluck outside of our home where we invite everyone.
- 27:28Oscar Navarro: There's hundreds of kids that come.
- 27:30Oscar Navarro: We hand out tracks and candy and food.
- 27:33Oscar Navarro: I'm always outside playing.
- 27:36Oscar Navarro: Free food, free food.
- 27:37Ray Comfort: Did you have any trouble with the city doing that?
- 27:39Ray Comfort: We haven't no problem, that's great.
- 27:42Oscar Navarro: No, really, why would they?
- 27:42Ray Comfort: have a problem with the city.
- 27:43Ray Comfort: You're supposed to have a permit when you have food.
- 27:45Ray Comfort: Well, we do a potluck Only if you sell, I think.
- 27:48Ray Comfort: I'm not sure.
- 27:50Oscar Navarro: What yeah Food?
- 27:51Oscar Navarro: We also, you know, I'll go outside and play soccer with the kids.
- 27:58Ray Comfort: Do you have a permit for that?
- 27:59Ray Comfort: I don't have a permit for this is California.
- 28:00Oscar Navarro: This is communism man.
- 28:02Oscar Navarro: We want to see your breathing, I know really I volunteer to be a coach for my kids' sporting events and I see the way the Lord works.
- 28:12Oscar Navarro: In the midst of all of that, I've had non-believing parents come up to me and be like, hey, my kid came back and said that you guys are Christian and you're praying, you're sharing man, that's so cool.
- 28:26Oscar Navarro: He was really interested.
- 28:27Oscar Navarro: We've actually never gotten somebody to be offended by it.
- 28:30Oscar Navarro: We've only had parents inquire in a form of curiosity and thankfulness.
- 28:36Oscar Navarro: One of them let me know how thankful they were that we pray before a meal because they don't do that in their home and they're like oh, I'm so glad my kid gets to see that side of.
- 28:47Oscar Navarro: For him it's like, oh, it's neat, it's diverse, but for me it's the truth.
- 28:50Oscar Navarro: But the point is is we try to have a form of hospitality to our neighbors, to invite them in to witness the gospel lived out and that's the point that you were making is friendship.
- 29:03Oscar Navarro: Evangelism is holding back the gospel.
- 29:05Oscar Navarro: Discipleship, evangelism is recognizing that the scriptures do not separate discipleship and evangelism.
- 29:12Oscar Navarro: It's not like discipleship is for the saved and evangelism is for the non-believer.
- 29:16Oscar Navarro: You will not see that divided in the scriptures.
- 29:18Oscar Navarro: Evangelism and discipleship happen together.
- 29:21Oscar Navarro: And so when I proclaim the gospel to my neighbor.
- 29:24Oscar Navarro: The next thing I'm going to do is enter into a form of discipleship which puts on display the work of the gospel.
- 29:32Oscar Navarro: They see me speak tenderly to my wife.
- 29:35Oscar Navarro: They see me love and invest in my children and their children, and the hope is they would look at that and go, huh, I see the truth of what he is saying.
- 29:44Oscar Navarro: Lived out in his life, oh man.
- 29:48Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, the power of living the Christian life before unbelievers.
- 29:53Emeal Zwayne: You know, I was at In-N-Out the other day and I was sitting just sitting there, you know, minding my own business, eating my protein burger my four by four, by the way Wow.
- 30:03Oscar Navarro: Four by four Four cheese too.
- 30:04Emeal Zwayne: Well, when you don't eat breakfast and lunch, you're hungry.
- 30:07Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, four by four protein style.
- 30:09Mark Spence: Are you on an OMAD diet right now?
- 30:10Mark Spence: I'm just on a no.
- 30:12Emeal Zwayne: Well, what's OMAD?
- 30:14Mark Spence: One meal a day.
- 30:14Emeal Zwayne: Oh, is that what it's called?
- 30:15Emeal Zwayne: Yeah.
- 30:16Mark Spence: I thought it was a, still hungryailed it.
- 30:17Mark Spence: Yeah, I am.
- 30:28Emeal Zwayne: I've heard it called intermittent fasting, so I only eat dinner, and so I was at In-N-Out with my 4x4.
- 30:34Emeal Zwayne: What is a 4x4?
- 30:34Emeal Zwayne: It's a truck.
- 30:35Emeal Zwayne: It's four patties and four cheese, so you know.
- 30:42Emeal Zwayne: Like I said, one piece of meat, there's four.
- 30:43Emeal Zwayne: So you know double double.
- 30:43Ray Comfort: You know, double double.
- 30:44Ray Comfort: This is a double double, double double.
- 30:45Ray Comfort: This is a four by four, this is a double double double, double, it's a four by four.
- 30:47Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, but it's protein style, so it's no bread, it's just lettuce.
- 31:00Ray Comfort: So it's wrapped in lettuce.
- 31:01Emeal Zwayne: I'm like I'm picking every piece of cheese off the paper at the end the cheese paper.
- 31:05Oscar Navarro: I love that.
- 31:06Emeal Zwayne: So, anyway, I'm sitting there and this young boy and his sister sit at the table, and then, you know, the boy was on his phone, the girl was doing something, and then the brother he was probably 14.
- 31:19Emeal Zwayne: The sister was probably 9 or 10.
- 31:21Emeal Zwayne: And he looks over and he goes so how was your day today?
- 31:25Emeal Zwayne: And I remember, just sitting there, I'm like whoa, it really really stood out to me.
- 31:31Emeal Zwayne: And in fact, before the boy sat down though, he looked at me and he goes hi, I'm like okay, something's up here.
- 31:38Emeal Zwayne: And then he sits there and he says his sister, and I go, I go man this how old was he 14?
- 31:41Emeal Zwayne: I go man this, how old was he 14.
- 31:43Emeal Zwayne: Wow, and I remember.
- 31:44Emeal Zwayne: I just immediately thought I bet this kid comes from a Christian home, I bet these parents brought this kid up.
- 31:50Emeal Zwayne: Well, so I'm sitting there eating and then I hear easy.
- 31:53Emeal Zwayne: And I look up and I see the mom, and it was Jen Danskin, Andy Smith's Really Jen Smith, that's her new name, andy Smith's wife.
- 32:01Emeal Zwayne: And these are people I've known.
- 32:02Emeal Zwayne: I used to be part of our church.
- 32:04Emeal Zwayne: She used to be my secretary.
- 32:05Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, they used to be at our church where we pastored, and I've known them, it was their kids and it was their kids, but I hadn't seen them in a long time.
- 32:10Emeal Zwayne: I didn't recognize them.
- 32:11Emeal Zwayne: I'm like what?
- 32:12Emeal Zwayne: So it was a blessing to be able to tell her that and to Lord.
- 32:20Emeal Zwayne: And that's what you're talking about, oscar, in terms of our impact.
- 32:23Emeal Zwayne: I'm reading a book where the author was talking about impact in your neighborhood and he was talking about how they lived in a neighborhood where all the backyard it was like in a circle around a lake and all the sliding glass doors were backed up to the lake so everyone could look into everyone else's house in the evenings as they're doing stuff.
- 32:44Emeal Zwayne: Hard to commit murder, yeah, okay, but he talked about how you know.
- 32:50Emeal Zwayne: One neighbor was walking by and they just came up to him.
- 32:53Emeal Zwayne: They said you know what I just got to tell you when I see you and your family every day?
- 32:59Emeal Zwayne: Because the point he was making was that his family does a lot of nothing.
- 33:03Emeal Zwayne: That was what he said.
- 33:03Emeal Zwayne: We do a lot of nothing, which means they just hang out, they play games, they worship together, they read the word, they walk, they play outside.
- 33:11Emeal Zwayne: See them in each other's pajamas yeah, yeah, shorty pajamas.
- 33:16Emeal Zwayne: So, anyway, he said the neighbor comes up to him and he said you know what I just got to tell you.
- 33:24Emeal Zwayne: When I see you outside with your family all the time, which you are doing, what you guys do, I don't know what it is this is one of those easy moments but it makes me think of god.
- 33:38Emeal Zwayne: Wow, it makes me think of god.
- 33:40Emeal Zwayne: He says I don't know why that's awesome.
- 33:44Ray Comfort: Weep when he said that, or was you weeping when you're thinking of thinking of God?
- 33:47Emeal Zwayne: I'm replaying it no, but it just hit me, you know like it makes me think of God and guys.
- 33:53Emeal Zwayne: We can't underestimate how our lives genuinely lived for the Lord in our neighborhood can have a massive spiritual impact.
- 34:02Emeal Zwayne: To be aware Amen.
- 34:03Ray Comfort: Isn't it so sad that we're so ugly when we cry?
- 34:07Oscar Navarro: That's such a savage.
- 34:10Ray Comfort: These poor people get on national television in a disaster.
- 34:12Ray Comfort: They get on TV first time in their life and they're blubbing.
- 34:15Ray Comfort: It's just.
- 34:17Emeal Zwayne: That's the way, it is Ugly crying man.
- 34:20Ray Comfort: But it's very moving, easy to show.
- 34:22Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, no, but really I mean, that's what that passage is talking about, about being the light of the world, letting your light so shine.
- 34:31Emeal Zwayne: You know, especially again, don't let that be the exclusive thing you do.
- 34:36Emeal Zwayne: Go out and do declarational evangelism, share the gospel on the streets, build a relationship in 3.5 seconds, like Ray talked about.
- 34:42Emeal Zwayne: Mark is looking at.
- 34:44Ray Comfort: I typed in ugly criers.
- 34:45Ray Comfort: An easy came up First.
- 34:48Ray Comfort: That was the first one on there.
- 34:50Emeal Zwayne: Yeah.
- 34:52Ray Comfort: I write for a well-known Christian organization once a month addressing pastors, and they just for this month.
- 34:59Ray Comfort: It was how can a pastor reach out to his neighbors this summer?
- 35:02Ray Comfort: And I thought I haven't any idea.
- 35:05Ray Comfort: So I went to AI, which I often do, and said give me 10 different things.
- 35:10Ray Comfort: And boy, it was helpful.
- 35:11Ray Comfort: Yeah, it really was.
- 35:13Ray Comfort: It just gave me thoughts to leap off on.
- 35:16Oscar Navarro: It was all recharge their batteries.
- 35:18Ray Comfort: Yeah, but let me share some of them because it's like what you talked about you can shut your street off with a permit.
- 35:25Ray Comfort: I didn't realize you could do that.
- 35:27Ray Comfort: You could go to a local city and say I want to close the street off our street and have a fun, family fun thing and have barbecues for the family and free food and stuff like that.
- 35:37Ray Comfort: So all these different ideas.
- 35:39Ray Comfort: And you're going to have a picnic for the neighborhood.
- 35:42Ray Comfort: Invite all the neighbors to a picnic at the local park.
- 35:45Ray Comfort: And there are people in your church that volunteer to be a clown and have balloons with scripture on them and give out gospel tracts to all the people and free food.
- 35:52Emeal Zwayne: Wow, you wouldn't even need a costume, Ray.
- 35:54Emeal Zwayne: I just started an outreach in my neighborhood to kids.
- 36:00Emeal Zwayne: I have a dummy called Charlie who would do that.
- 36:05Mark Spence: Hey kids, this is Charlie here.
- 36:08Emeal Zwayne: I was awful.
- 36:08Emeal Zwayne: Completely untrained Ray, you must have seriously been the worst ventriloquist.
- 36:12Ray Comfort: Really bad.
- 36:12Ray Comfort: But the good thing is, when you got a mustache, you just grow it.
- 36:16Emeal Zwayne: Grow it over your lips An extra two inches.
- 36:18Ray Comfort: How many people mistake?
- 36:19Emeal Zwayne: And no one has any idea that you're able to do that.
- 36:21Emeal Zwayne: That would be a funny spoof for a ventriloquist.
- 36:24Mark Spence: Yes, it would, those medical master and puppet we all had to wear.
- 36:29Emeal Zwayne: How many people?
- 36:30Ray Comfort: thought you were the puppet, you blew it.
- 36:31Ray Comfort: You should have said dummy.
- 36:34Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, what else right?
- 36:35Ray Comfort: That's your only idea, no there's about 10 of them, but I just don't want to bore you.
- 36:39Ray Comfort: It's really great thoughts.
- 36:42Ray Comfort: Neighborhood block parties, family picnics, outdoor movie nights, Ooh yeah, and it's in a local park.
- 36:47Ray Comfort: You just get permission from the city, put up a big screen and invite the neighbor to a free movie.
- 36:52Ray Comfort: And it's a Christian movie, a quality movie.
- 36:53Ray Comfort: And you give out free food at the same, or free candy, whatever, and invites to the thing and a little start in prayer.
- 36:59Ray Comfort: So this is a Christian movie.
- 37:00Ray Comfort: You end up by saying, if you'd like to talk to spiritual things, were here for you.
- 37:03Mark Spence: Like 180.
- 37:04Mark Spence: We could show 180.
- 37:06Mark Spence: Yeah, that'd be great For the kids Bring all your kids folks.
- 37:10Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, there are.
- 37:11Emeal Zwayne: You know the saying where there's a will.
- 37:14Ray Comfort: Fullyfreefilmscom has got a whole stack of free movies.
- 37:17Ray Comfort: Ooh yeah.
- 37:18Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, we've had people you know do stuff.
- 37:20Emeal Zwayne: Where there's an event in their neighborhood, some kind of thing at a park or something, they'll go.
- 37:24Emeal Zwayne: They'll give out free water bottles with a tract.
- 37:27Ray Comfort: With water in them, with water in them, not just the bottles.
- 37:30Oscar Navarro: That's what I was doing wrong.
- 37:31Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, and they'll.
- 37:32Emeal Zwayne: Sometimes, you know, they'll even get.
- 37:34Emeal Zwayne: I've heard of people that have gotten like special things.
- 37:36Emeal Zwayne: They wrap the bottle with that has a gospel on it.
- 37:38Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, you know.
- 37:39Emeal Zwayne: So there's so many inside one of our.
- 37:43Emeal Zwayne: Oh you know what?
- 37:44Emeal Zwayne: I bet our Unterrible tract is waterproof.
- 37:46Emeal Zwayne: It probably is.
- 37:47Emeal Zwayne: That's an idea.
- 37:48Emeal Zwayne: Just the ink comes out.
- 37:49Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, how about actually putting the gospel in water in microscopic letter form and they drink the gospel?
- 38:01Emeal Zwayne: I'm sure there's something like that out there.
- 38:03Emeal Zwayne: But, guys, look, there is a call upon our lives to recognize that we can really reach our neighbors and we could do it in a way that glorifies God.
- 38:18Emeal Zwayne: This is my concern.
- 38:19Emeal Zwayne: It's the justifying attitude of I'm just too busy or because they live so close, I'm worried about what they're going to say.
- 38:28Emeal Zwayne: It reminded me of the whole issue with the Good Samaritan.
- 38:31Emeal Zwayne: We call it the Good Samaritan, but I don't know if that's accurate.
- 38:35Ray Comfort: It wasn't good.
- 38:35Ray Comfort: He merely did the basic requirements of the law.
- 38:38Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, in Luke 10, it says in verse 25, and behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him saying teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
- 38:46Emeal Zwayne: He said to him what is it written in the law?
- 38:48Emeal Zwayne: What is your reading of it?
- 38:49Emeal Zwayne: So he answered and said you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.
- 38:55Emeal Zwayne: And he said to him you have answered rightly, do this and you will live.
- 38:58Emeal Zwayne: But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, and who is my neighbor and the heart of that is he didn't want to do it.
- 39:08Ray Comfort: Well, the Living Bible brings out what that wanting to justify himself.
- 39:12Ray Comfort: The man wanted to justify his lack of love for some kinds of people Right Like the.
- 39:18Emeal Zwayne: Samaritans.
- 39:19Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, so there was this sense of wanting to violate what was his duty, and that is to love all people, right, and of course, there were certain people they didn't want to show love toward.
- 39:33Emeal Zwayne: We know the Jews and the Samaritans had issues between them, and so Jesus intentionally uses this parable and what an amazing parable.
- 39:42Emeal Zwayne: We've talked about it before on the podcast, but this guy, who was supposed to be an enemy with that Jew, demonstrated toward him an overabundance of love.
- 39:54Emeal Zwayne: He cared for him, he took him in.
- 39:58Emeal Zwayne: He said hey, I'll pay now and I'll pay for anything else that you expend.
- 40:02Emeal Zwayne: We just miss this, we just kind of skip ahead.
- 40:08Emeal Zwayne: But you look at the fine details, and this is what Jesus is saying.
- 40:12Emeal Zwayne: I mean, if that's the standard, anything beneath it is a given.
- 40:17Emeal Zwayne: And so, oscar, let me ask you this how do we deal, though, with difficult neighbors?
- 40:23Emeal Zwayne: Because we all have those neighbors that are difficult, that maybe are cantankerous, or hey, stop parking your car in front of my house, or, you know, your kids are too noisy, shut your dog up.
- 40:35Oscar Navarro: You know, stop giving me your loud washing machines.
- 40:39Mark Spence: No, it's funny because I actually have a neighbor who is just like that and he kind of melted a little bit when we gave him the gift bag.
- 40:45Mark Spence: But he's just like that where he gets really angry if you park in front of his house.
- 40:49Mark Spence: He only parks in front of our house.
- 40:52Mark Spence: That's the only place he parks is in front of our house and he gets upset if anybody parks in front of his house, which is with no cars in front of his house.
- 40:59Ray Comfort: He's got Parkinson's.
- 41:03Oscar Navarro: We, thankfully, don't really have that neighbor, although I do have two neighbors that are like in absolute odds with each other and they often come to me to complain about the other one.
- 41:13Emeal Zwayne: Oh really, you're in the middle.
- 41:14Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I'm in the middle, so you're the peacekeeper.
- 41:16Oscar Navarro: I'm trying to be the peacekeeper but I think as Christians we should, as far as we are able to, to show love and kindness and understanding and grace to that neighbor.
- 41:31Oscar Navarro: If I have a neighbor that doesn't want me to park in front of his house, I don't get that.
- 41:35Oscar Navarro: That makes no sense to me.
- 41:37Oscar Navarro: When I get home late from work and there's no other spot but that one spot missing and I can't park there, I'm going to bear that burden.
- 41:45Oscar Navarro: I'm going to park around the block for him.
- 41:47Oscar Navarro: I would, I would be that neighbor, I would love him.
- 41:50Oscar Navarro: Uh, that you know.
- 41:51Oscar Navarro: Be all things, to all men and to.
- 41:54Oscar Navarro: To put others before yourselves is exactly that.
- 41:59Oscar Navarro: Is it to love others more than you love yourself in those kinds of situations and I know that can be hard and frustrating, because it's not just someone you see every now and then, it's someone that you live next to.
- 42:08Oscar Navarro: But isn't being a witness to the gospel that much more important than a witness to your own personal needs?
- 42:16Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, oh, huge, yeah, I mean yeah, and you go the extra mile.
- 42:20Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, with courtesy consideration.
- 42:22Emeal Zwayne: You know, we ended up extending our driveway or widening our driveway.
- 42:30Emeal Zwayne: There was, like you know, a dirt planter area, but we intentionally spent thousands of dollars and widened it so that we could park more of our cars on our driveway, so that we didn't have to park on a neighbor's houses.
- 42:41Emeal Zwayne: You know, because we don't, we don't get, we don't want to be a bother, we want to be a light for the gospel.
- 42:46Emeal Zwayne: You know it, gospel, it wasn't convenient for us to do that, but we did it out of love, and so let's just do something concrete, yeah, yeah, and so Foundational.
- 43:04Oscar Navarro: Foundational.
- 43:04Oscar Navarro: Yeah, yeah, so can I add to that or kind of change gears a little bit to what you're saying, which is, I think that also extends to our ideologies, because often I think we tend to avoid people that share different ideologies in us, and I'm thinking specifically about political ideologies where, like, oh well, my liberal neighbor and we tend to distance ourself, we think that they're further away from the gospel, we don't wanna deal with their different views of things, or the opposite is true, which is, our ideologies can often become a stumbling block to someone else's understanding of the gospel.
- 43:42Oscar Navarro: And there's specifically a book called Political Visions and Illusions, written by David Koizis I'm probably mispronouncing his last name, but he does a great job of pointing out how often our political ideology becomes idolatrous, and he shows us how, whether you're a liberal or conservative or a libertarian, how every political language, how all of these political storylines have a creation, fall, redemption, consummation story to them, and how he says that ultimately, what we do is we treat our political opinions as these ideologies which become messianic in nature, and we grow in fervor over them, and often what happens is, what prevents us from being a good witness to the gospel is that we're more of a witness to policies and politicians than we are the Prince of Peace.
- 44:37Oscar Navarro: And so, in the same way, where, like, if my neighbor was flying a Celtics flag, I wouldn't knock on his door and be like you know, I'm a Lakers fan Like that's probably not where I'm going to start, you know.
- 44:46Oscar Navarro: And so we need to put aside things that are really important, things that we care deeply about, things that we should have strong conviction over, but those man-made things need to be put aside for the sake of the gospel.
- 45:00Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, amen, oscar.
- 45:02Emeal Zwayne: It's so funny you said that you said Lakers and Celtics right.
- 45:04Emeal Zwayne: When I was like, I just re did a reunion with two of my friends from 34 years ago.
- 45:10Emeal Zwayne: We grew up in the same neighborhood and one of them was in town.
- 45:12Emeal Zwayne: We all got together and I was telling one of them how, when I was a kid, I was a celtics fan.
- 45:17Emeal Zwayne: We had family in boston and so you know, my brother was.
- 45:20Emeal Zwayne: I was bandwagon, of course, but but I remember one year that the celtics won the championship against the Lakers.
- 45:26Emeal Zwayne: You know their big rivalry in the eighties and I remember he got outside and my, my, my friend's uncle he was, you know, there in the neighborhood and he was a huge Lakers fan and I go, yeah, celtics, and he goes shut up.
- 45:40Emeal Zwayne: He was so mad he wanted to kill me.
- 45:42Emeal Zwayne: But it's funny you said that.
- 45:44Emeal Zwayne: But uh, but yeah me, but it's funny you said that, but uh, but yeah, you know, um, deciding to, to, to do those sorts of things.
- 45:54Emeal Zwayne: I mean, ray, for years you and sue have done that.
- 45:55Emeal Zwayne: Like you said, you gave that washing machine away, you've given eggs, you've, back in the day, you took care of your neighbor helen, elderly woman, didn't have anybody, and you guys stepped up and did that and were a witness to her.
- 46:04Ray Comfort: Yeah, that was a pleasure.
- 46:05Ray Comfort: You know, I was just thinking of something that happened years ago.
- 46:09Ray Comfort: There's a neighbor right in front of me whom I love.
- 46:13Ray Comfort: His name's Mohan and Harjit.
- 46:14Ray Comfort: They're from India, they're Hindus, and I heard that he wasn't well.
- 46:18Ray Comfort: So I just went over to just give my thoughts for them, didn't want to go and visit him, I didn't even think of it, but they just invited me in the next thing.
- 46:32Oscar Navarro: I was in his bedroom chatting with him.
- 46:33Ray Comfort: He was so pleased that I came to visit him when he was sick and I don't think he ever forgot that.
- 46:35Ray Comfort: I mean, I didn't even plan to go in, I just got invited in, but it warmed my heart to think that happened.
- 46:38Emeal Zwayne: It means a lot to people.
- 46:39Emeal Zwayne: You know, one of our neighbor's houses caught fire and Rachel was home and she saw what was going on and she, you know, ran out and you know, invited the neighbor in and you know, when the house was on fire, yeah, and they sat and had coffee and baked some good, and then they called 911.
- 47:00Emeal Zwayne: They were crocheting.
- 47:00Emeal Zwayne: No, but yeah, I mean, the ambulance came.
- 47:03Emeal Zwayne: But you know, after the ambulance came and everything, she just invited her into the house and just started to minister to her.
- 47:06Emeal Zwayne: Ambulance came and everything, she just invited her into the house and just started to minister to her and the lady, just you know, was overwhelmed and later came back with her daughter and her daughter's like thank you for taking care of my mom, you know.
- 47:15Emeal Zwayne: And and and again, other neighbors.
- 47:17Emeal Zwayne: One neighbor came out.
- 47:18Emeal Zwayne: He's filming it.
- 47:19Emeal Zwayne: Her house is on fire.
- 47:20Emeal Zwayne: He didn't say a word to her.
- 47:21Emeal Zwayne: He's like, yeah, you know, other neighbors were just like standing back and not even doing.
- 47:25Emeal Zwayne: And Rachel just ran over and, just you know, loved on her.
- 47:29Emeal Zwayne: So again, so many.
- 47:30Emeal Zwayne: I mean, your neighbor's house doesn't have to be on fire.
- 47:33Emeal Zwayne: I get to see someone going and lighting fires in their neighbor's house just to be able to reach them.
- 47:40Emeal Zwayne: Don't do that.
- 47:40Emeal Zwayne: How do you think your house caught fire?
- 47:42Emeal Zwayne: Easy, oh, it was you, mark.
- 47:45Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, so anyway.
- 47:50Emeal Zwayne: 1 Peter, 2, 15 to 17,.
- 47:51Emeal Zwayne: For this is the will of God that by doing good, you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men as free and not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.
- 47:58Emeal Zwayne: Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the King.
- 48:03Emeal Zwayne: I love that.
- 48:05Emeal Zwayne: Do good and those neighbors, all those stupid Christians and this and that put them to silence by doing good.
- 48:12Emeal Zwayne: Love them, no matter what they may do to you, and seek to be a witness.
- 48:16Emeal Zwayne: Galatians 6.10,.
- 48:17Emeal Zwayne: Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all.
- 48:21Emeal Zwayne: Yes, especially to those who are of the household of faith, but to all, and let our light shine Amen.
- 48:27Mark Spence: Amen.
