- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:14Tuesday. It is only the 2nd of January.
- 0:17The year is still so fresh. Forget the new car smell.
- 0:22It's still got the new year smell, doesn't it?
- 0:25Well, I hope it does for you as well As for me.
- 0:28Here we are. It's a Tuesday.
- 0:32You are listening to the podcast, which means we are
- 0:34going to continue to read God's Word.
- 0:37And this is a short chapter. It's only 12 verses long, and
- 0:41this is a chapter that reminds us that God is always in
- 0:45control, even when it feels otherwise.
- 0:48Back in the day, back in the ancient Near East, when nations
- 0:52would fight against each other, they didn't believe that it was
- 0:55military prowess that would win them the battles.
- 0:57They believed that it would be the power of their God versus
- 1:00the power of the other God. And whichever God was the most
- 1:03powerful, they would win. And so when the Philistines
- 1:08defeated Israel, they literally thought our God is more powerful
- 1:11than the Hebrew God. And so when they took the Ark of
- 1:14the Covenant, they were thinking, hey, now the Hebrew
- 1:18God is going to have to be subservient to our God.
- 1:23Except friends, you and I know that's not how it works.
- 1:25And so this is God asserting His authority even though he has
- 1:29been, quote UN quote, captured against His will.
- 1:34It is a glorious, glorious story when we see that God's plans
- 1:38often go a little bit further sideways than what we think they
- 1:41will, but always according to His will.
- 1:46So, friends, let us read together First Samuel, Chapter
- 1:505. After the Philistines captured
- 2:02the Ark of God, they took it from the battleground at
- 2:06Ebenezer to the town of Ashdod. They carried the Ark of God into
- 2:11the temple of Dagon and placed it beside an idol of Dagon.
- 2:17But when the citizens of Ashdod went to see it the next morning,
- 2:21Dagon had fallen with his face to the ground in front of the
- 2:26Ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him
- 2:30in his place again. But the next morning the same
- 2:34thing happened. Dagon had fallen face down
- 2:38before the Ark of the Lord again.
- 2:41This time his head and hands were broken off and were lying
- 2:46in the doorway. Only the trunk of his body was
- 2:49left intact. That is why, to this day,
- 2:53neither the priests of Dagon nor anyone who enters the Temple of
- 2:57Dagon in Ashdod will step on its threshold.
- 3:01Then the Lord's heavy hands struck the people of Ashdod and
- 3:06the nearby villages with a plague of tumors.
- 3:10When the people realized what was happening, they cried out.
- 3:13We can't keep the ark of the God of Israel here any longer.
- 3:18He is against us. We will all be destroyed along
- 3:22with Dagon our God. So they called together the
- 3:26rulers of the Philistine towns, and asked what should we do with
- 3:30the Ark of the God of Israel. The rulers disgusted and
- 3:34replied, move it to the town of Gath.
- 3:39So they moved the ark of the God of Israel to Gath.
- 3:43But when the ark arrived at Gath, the Lord's heavy hand fell
- 3:48on its men, young and old. He struck them with a plague of
- 3:52tumors, and there was a great panic.
- 3:56So they sent the Ark of God to the town of Ekron.
- 4:00But when the people of Ekron saw it coming, they cried out.
- 4:04They are bringing the Ark of the God of Israel here to kill us
- 4:08too. The people summoned the
- 4:11Philistine rulers again and begged them, Please send the Ark
- 4:16of the God of Israel back to its own country or it will kill us
- 4:20all. For the deadly plague from God
- 4:23had already begun, and great fear was sweeping across the
- 4:27town. Those who didn't die were
- 4:30afflicted with tumors, and the cry from the town rose to
- 4:35heaven. Our gracious and mighty God, we
- 4:48worship you today. At the start of this New Year,
- 4:53we place everything at your feet.
- 4:57Anything that we have elevated to the status of God in our own
- 5:01lives. Just like Dagon, we break off
- 5:05its head and its hands and we lay it down before you.
- 5:09You are sovereign. You alone not only rule the
- 5:15galaxies and the future and our world, but our lives as well.
- 5:22And so here we stand, Lord, and we give you our lives.
- 5:26We give you the year ahead and pray that your will be done
- 5:30here. That whatever your plans are for
- 5:35this world, for your Kingdom, that you would lead us to play
- 5:41our part in your story. Because our story fits so snugly
- 5:47on the palm of your hands and your story, so we surrender
- 5:52everything to you. How mighty loving Father and
- 5:58God.
