  Speaker 1: raising up elders. And I think the first step is

  Speaker 1: owning the responsibility for doing so. When you look at

  Speaker 1: the qualification for elders in 1 Timothy 3 and in

  Speaker 1: Titus 1 and 1 Peter chapter 5, it's clear that

  Speaker 1: these qualifications are to be examined by the church, looking

  Speaker 1: into a man's life as a husband and father, looking
• 0:31
  Speaker 1: into a man's character, and looking into a man's ability
• 0:35
  Speaker 1: to teach, to hold firmly to the faithful word, and
• 0:40
  Speaker 1: to exhort in sound doctrine and refute those who contradict it.

  Speaker 1: These are things that the church is supposed to evaluate.

  Speaker 1: And once we understand that, that we're supposed to evaluate that,

  Speaker 1: the next step is to understand that we go beyond

  Speaker 1: evaluating it to also testing and training men. We need

  Speaker 1: to inculcate these things in men. We have to look

  Speaker 1: for them. We have to look for individuals with the

  Speaker 1: kind of character qualities and the kind of spiritual maturity

  Speaker 1: and then inculcate into these men the kind of theological
• 1:17
  Speaker 1: training necessary for them to step into these roles. I

  Speaker 1: also think it's necessary for us to call men forward
• 1:24
  Speaker 1: when we see this in them. Oftentimes men will think
• 1:28
  Speaker 1: about eldership as something for someone else and sometimes they
• 1:33
  Speaker 1: need to be reminded that God calls men from within
• 1:37
  Speaker 1: the body and that it's our job to be watching
• 1:41
  Speaker 1: for things that they don't necessarily see themselves. They need
• 1:45
  Speaker 1: a little bit of encouragement to explore the possibility of
• 1:48
  Speaker 1: that calling in their lives and a little bit of
• 1:50
  Speaker 1: encouragement in the way of being brought alongside elders and
• 1:54
  Speaker 1: discipled and mentored by them to determine whether or not
• 1:59
  Speaker 1: they are able to serve in this capacity.
