Transcript
- 0:11Hello and welcome. You're listening to Galaxy
- 0:13Crashers, The Busted, and McFly podcast.
- 0:16The only podcast where the 2 worlds collide.
- 0:18Hosted by us 2 mums who love revisiting the naughties on a
- 0:22daily basis and talking all things Busted and McFly.
- 0:25I'm Sham. And I'm Tay, and on this week's
- 0:28episode, we are heading back to Busted's first album and looking
- 0:31at the song all the way, where we'll be discussing how the song
- 0:34has changed with age, giving our ratings, and discussing other
- 0:37songs from the era. You can also stick around for
- 0:40our usual This or that segment, Song of the Week, as always.
- 0:43And in the theme of this week's Focus, we've added a segment all
- 0:46about pop anthems that haven't aged well since the naughties.
- 0:50Yes, indeed. And there are some bangers.
- 0:52I'm actually really looking forward to that segment.
- 0:54I'm not gonna lie, there are. It's taken some prep, but it's
- 0:58going to be an interesting 1. So make sure you stick around.
- 1:01How's your week been, Shan? What have you been up to?
- 1:03And also, I've got a challenge for you.
- 1:05You're not allowed to say that you've not been up to much this
- 1:07week. You've got to actually tell us
- 1:08what you've been doing. Challenge accepted actually,
- 1:11because this has been a pretty wild week for me, Mum wise,
- 1:14Genuinely so. So I can, I'm not going to say
- 1:17that. I'm not going to say the
- 1:18unspeakable words. Proud of you.
- 1:21Thank you. It's been a pretty normal week,
- 1:24to be honest. Work life.
- 1:26I've had a lovely few runs this week with my work bestie.
- 1:29But this weekend, Yeah. So Saturday I gave my kids this
- 1:34like. I'll give you some back story.
- 1:35Saturday I gave my kids a party day.
- 1:38We do it once a month where I buy them loads of party food,
- 1:41dress them up in pretty dresses, put on their, they've got like
- 1:44this little party playlist on Spotify.
- 1:46Oh, so we have, yeah, we have games, we have fun crafts, like
- 1:53all sorts. And then after their lunch, I'm
- 1:56like, I even make them a cake. And then after their lunch, they
- 1:59take their the Alexa that we have downstairs, they take it
- 2:02upstairs and they have a disco. I love it so much.
- 2:05I get a better award. Yeah, we do it like we do it
- 2:08like once a month. It sounds like I'm in a really
- 2:10good mum, but actually it's like a get out my hair kind of day.
- 2:13It's like what can I? Do.
- 2:15To make Silver Linings. Yeah, right.
- 2:19But this week. So yeah, they normally have a
- 2:21disco upstairs. And this weekend, however, they
- 2:22decided to create like this floor.
- 2:25Like you couldn't see the floor. There was just teddies,
- 2:28blankets, pillows everywhere and I was.
- 2:32I don't mind if they make a mess on party day, it can make a
- 2:34mess. But there was a strategy to the
- 2:38mess this time. They'd climbed up on their bunk
- 2:41bed and jumped off it. So they'd climbed all the way to
- 2:44the top, and they've made themselves this land in an.
- 2:46Accident waiting to happen. Yeah, right.
- 2:50Arya was fine. She's like really little and
- 2:53she's a bit of an Adrenalinian junkie, so she would do it 100
- 2:56times. But Autumn, she's, she's a tall
- 2:59gal and she is a tall gal. She jumped off.
- 3:02Yeah, she's. Her daddy show, because mummy's
- 3:05not a tall gal. Mummy's not a tall she's.
- 3:08Going to be taller than you do, Bradley.
- 3:11Said to me over there that he thinks I'm shrinking.
- 3:12And I was like, how dare you? How dare you do that to me?
- 3:17Old. 5 foot three stop. Can't afford to drink.
- 3:24Yeah. So Autumn is.
- 3:25Yeah, she's quite tall and she jumped off.
- 3:28So she's made Aria go first because Autumn is a bit of a
- 3:31chicken. So she's made Aria jump off 1st
- 3:33to see if it's safe. And Aria's had the time of her
- 3:36life. And then Autumn's jumped off and
- 3:38she's smashed her head. There's like this wooden shop in
- 3:43their bedroom, like a really big, big wooden shop.
- 3:46And she's smashed her head on the shop and completely smashed
- 3:51her front teeth in. I'm not even being dramatic
- 3:55either. She's like, she's even dented
- 3:57the wooden kitchen because she's hit the wooden shop.
- 4:00Sorry, because she's hit it that hard.
- 4:02It was bad. She ended up in A&E and then,
- 4:05yeah, right. And then the emergency dentist
- 4:07and it turns out she's like, cut all her gums open and now has a
- 4:10wobbly tooth and an infection. So she's on antibiotics and
- 4:15she's got like a tooth growing and it's now growing through the
- 4:18cut in her. Gums to go back.
- 4:22Yeah, and then also the next day she had an eye test which she
- 4:25was already dreading. She cried the whole time and it
- 4:29turns out she might need glasses, so.
- 4:31Yeah, but tell her Auntie Tay wears glasses and she's cool as
- 4:34fuck, so you know. So every single person in my
- 4:37family and Bradley's family wear glasses.
- 4:40Yeah. So there's no avoiding it.
- 4:41So yeah, I just said, well, she's got a prescription, but
- 4:45she does need another eye drop eye test with like these little
- 4:47like eye drops on Wednesday to confirm it.
- 4:51Yeah, honestly, this weekend could just go in the bin.
- 4:54I genuinely wish I could say I've not been up to much.
- 4:58The tides have turned. The hell the tides have turned.
- 5:03Well, obviously I knew that Ultimate hurt herself, but I
- 5:06didn't know it got the worst with the infection and
- 5:08antibiotics and that much. So that's not good, honestly.
- 5:11And. For the people.
- 5:12Visualising this, I saw pictures of this injury and it made me
- 5:15cringe. It was absolutely.
- 5:17Grim, she was. She came downstairs and she told
- 5:19me Aria had pushed her off because she didn't want to be
- 5:22told off. And I had to say to her, yeah.
- 5:26And we had to have a big talk about lying.
- 5:27Yeah. But I had to say like, I am not
- 5:30going to tell you off for this because your face, your mouth is
- 5:34punishment. Told you off enough?
- 5:35Yeah, exactly. You will not be doing that
- 5:38again. She even didn't doesn't even
- 5:40want to sleep in it. I had to tell her you've never
- 5:42actually fallen off it unintentionally.
- 5:44Until now, yeah. Oh, bless you.
- 5:47Now we live and we learn. We have to make.
- 5:49And you know, me and Jack have these chats all the time about
- 5:51like safe play and you know, like how when you like supervise
- 5:55kids taking risks and it's okay as long as they take risks
- 5:58supervised or they're doing it carefully or whatever, but
- 6:00you've got to let them make their own mistakes.
- 6:02I mean, it's, it's hard to keep them safe like from bumps and
- 6:05things like that all the time, isn't it?
- 6:07You can't watch them every minute of every day.
- 6:09And also, you know, she's not a baby.
- 6:11She's she's what, 7? No, exactly.
- 6:14Yeah, she's she's not like. A baby she can.
- 6:17She makes her own decisions. She's a big girl, you know?
- 6:19So, oh, bless her. She makes her own, her own
- 6:22decisions to get Arya to do it first, to make sure to do yeah.
- 6:25And Arya does it and it's fine. She does it and it's terrible.
- 6:31Oh bless her. Literally not ideal.
- 6:33Anyway, how was your week? How was your week?
- 6:35Tell me something it. Was actually I had a really good
- 6:38weekend, no drama for me. I had my big market.
- 6:43So I think I mentioned last week that I have a little small
- 6:46business called the Crystal Pixie Co Head over to my
- 6:49Instagram if you want all things crystals and witchiness.
- 6:52A little plug there for my small business.
- 6:54I sell crystals and I hand make wire wrap like crystal
- 6:58jewellery. Next is rings and bracelets,
- 7:01things like that. So I had a big, big market and
- 7:04it's my favourite one of the year.
- 7:05It's called the healing light Festival and it's everything
- 7:08witchy, everything spiritual and yeah, it was just amazing.
- 7:11I love it and it went really, really well.
- 7:13I was like unbelievably like happy with how much I sold.
- 7:17It was so. Good.
- 7:18Oh my God, that's so. Good.
- 7:20It's probably the best one I've done in a good couple of years
- 7:24in terms of like, like over the weekend, I think it was close to
- 7:28£900 in the end that I made over the two days.
- 7:30So that's really good. Obviously it's not all profit
- 7:33because you pay for your table and then like items that you
- 7:36make, you take off expenses and stuff, but it's still to make
- 7:38£900 in two days is more than I make in a whole month on supply.
- 7:43So it was, it was pretty good. And and I have a really nice
- 7:48friend called Sophie and she has a little business called puffing
- 7:51rocks. Puffing rocks as in puffing the
- 7:53animal. If you want to head over to her
- 7:56page, have a little look because she's really good too.
- 7:58She does like bracelets and sun catches and stuff.
- 8:00And we're always like next to each other at these markets,
- 8:03which is super fun because we, even if it's like dull and
- 8:07there's nothing going on, at least we've got each other.
- 8:09And we just sit and chat and like, if I need to go to the
- 8:11toilet or get a coffee or like we watch each other's stool.
- 8:14And like, she went and had a reading, which is really nice.
- 8:16And I took, made a sale for her And like the same, if I was
- 8:19going to go and have something, she would take over my stool.
- 8:21And it's just nice to have somebody that you vibe with.
- 8:24And even though like products that we sell are similar,
- 8:27because a couple of people have said, you know, like, oh, you 2
- 8:29are next to each other. Like you sell quite similar
- 8:31things. And we're like, oh, no, we asked
- 8:32to be together because we've known each other for like 3 or 4
- 8:37years now. And we just get on really well.
- 8:39Even though we sell similar things, it's, you know, it's
- 8:41nice to have somebody that that is, you know, cheering for you
- 8:44as well as trying to do things. So yeah, that was super fun.
- 8:49Unfortunately, my has been ill again.
- 8:51I don't know how many times I've said that since we started this
- 8:54podcast in October, but she's. About as much as me saying not
- 8:57been up to much. And I think it might be, I think
- 8:59that might be my common, you know, thing that comes up.
- 9:02Anyway, yours your tagline. She's, yeah, she's decided to
- 9:06just not sleep at all, not not go to bed.
- 9:09She's normally quite good at going to bed, but she wakes up,
- 9:12but now she's not going to bed and she's waking up.
- 9:15So it's, yeah, bedtime is not far, but it's also my birthday
- 9:20on Friday. So we're off to Lyme Regis.
- 9:24Yes, for a child free weekend. I am an avid fossil slash
- 9:28crystal enthusiast, so I've never been to Lyme Regis, so I'm
- 9:31super excited to go and do some fossil hunting.
- 9:34So it's just me, my husband and our dog.
- 9:37Molly's off to her Nana's for the weekend.
- 9:38So yeah, it'd be nice, nice to get away and have bit peace and
- 9:41quiet. I love that we're going to start
- 9:43calling you Mary Anning on this. I am so up for that.
- 9:48I am going to find some dinosaurs.
- 9:50Yeah, Mary Anning, Autumn will be down there with you.
- 9:53She's like Mary Anning is like Autumn's idol.
- 9:55I know I remember getting her the little kits and stuff to
- 9:58find the the crystals and things.
- 10:00I love that she's following in my footsteps in all things
- 10:04geology. I love it.
- 10:06Absolutely love it. So yeah.
- 10:07And that nice little weekend planned, and a nice little
- 10:10weekend had. So sorry that yours was shared,
- 10:12but mine wasn't. Yeah, but yours was great.
- 10:18It's time for this or that. As always, we're going to give
- 10:21each other a this or that and probably discuss each other's
- 10:24other options as well. Because I want to tell you what
- 10:27I would have chosen for my this or that this week as well as
- 10:29hear yours. So I'm going with the era rather
- 10:33than the song because the song, as we're going to be discussing
- 10:37is, you know, a bit of a funny one.
- 10:40But I thought it would be quite cool to talk about the era and
- 10:43in television. So I've gone back to, you know,
- 10:46naughties TV and naughty films. Would you just, can I just say
- 10:52for the listeners, I've just read your this or that and
- 10:56you've split my personality in half?
- 10:59When I changed it, I was trying. To choose your favourite child.
- 11:01This is such a good choice, literally.
- 11:03So I like was trying to think of things and I was looking at
- 11:05different TV shows and movies of the time and I was like, this is
- 11:09a great one for Shannon. OK, so Are you ready this or
- 11:12that? Have a one night sleepover at
- 11:15the Hannah Montana house with the cast or be a background
- 11:20character in the first High School Musical film?
- 11:22Such a good choice. This is really hard.
- 11:26This is. Probably what you ever choose.
- 11:28I know. I thought you would appreciate
- 11:29this. I think I have an answer, but I
- 11:34think I have an answer because it will just be longer, not
- 11:38because I don't want the other one.
- 11:42I think my answer would be have a sleepover at the Hannah
- 11:46Montana house because I tell you now, me as a 32 year old, I
- 11:50could walk around that house and know where I am.
- 11:52I watched. The show honestly believe that
- 11:55you could just blend in. I would just blend and also
- 11:59like, and I'm not a fan of horses, but like, I love me some
- 12:03country music. Billy Ray, you are my man.
- 12:05Like get your cowboy. Boots on, get my cowboy boots
- 12:09on. Yeah, I think I would use that.
- 12:11But sweet, sweet, sweet Zac Efron, I am so sorry.
- 12:17Sweet sweet teen age Zac Efron before the dodgy face surgery.
- 12:22Yeah, and me that age thought he was like chopped dollar,
- 12:28literally. Oh God yeah he was.
- 12:30Still would, even with his dodgy chin.
- 12:32Yeah, Zac Efron, you'd be stupid naughty.
- 12:37Oh my goodness. OK, so you've gone for Hannah
- 12:39Montana. I would have chosen the
- 12:41opposite. I I love Hannah Montana.
- 12:44Don't get me wrong. I think the house would be super
- 12:46fun and to sleep over with the cast would be so fun.
- 12:49And it probably would be a bit more personal, but to be in High
- 12:52School Musical. Are you joking?
- 12:53The musical theatre gallon me would die and I feel like to be.
- 12:59A background character. Yeah, exactly.
- 13:01To be a background character, you'd be there filming for quite
- 13:04a long time. I don't think it would just be
- 13:05like a one day thing. Oh, I didn't think of.
- 13:08This. I feel like if you were a
- 13:09background character you'd be in lots of different scenes,
- 13:11especially if you were playing like a student at the school or
- 13:13something. You would be in all the ensemble
- 13:16dances and you might be like in the background of the theatre
- 13:19watching them do the performances and stuff.
- 13:21I would 100% choose high school in school.
- 13:24I think if I was in high school, in school, I'd be that girl,
- 13:26wouldn't I? The one that's like I like to
- 13:28pop and lock and jam and break. Is that even legal?
- 13:36Sometimes I think it's even cooler than homework.
- 13:39No, no, no, no. I hate myself.
- 13:45Yeah, that one literally maybe when this is being.
- 13:47Recorded and thousands of people are listening to me do this
- 13:50yeah, it's just. Not OK also, but like, think
- 13:54about it, right? Miley Cyrus?
- 13:58Yeah, Miley, What was she called?
- 14:00Miley Stewart? Sorry, that was her name and.
- 14:03Her Miley Stewart. Yeah, and Lily, my I think I
- 14:06would be such good friends with them, genuinely.
- 14:10New word. The character, she's so funny.
- 14:12She's so good feeling. And like, yeah, definitely.
- 14:15Yeah, I'd also, I had a crush on the other guy.
- 14:18What was he called? His real name was Mitchell
- 14:21Musso. Oh, I can't remember.
- 14:23I can't believe I remember his. Real name so.
- 14:26Yeah, I think he was called like Oliver.
- 14:28I fancied him so, so hard. You were definitely more of a
- 14:32Hannah Montana girl than me. I used to like Hannah Montana,
- 14:34but I don't think I'm as Stan for Hannah Montana as you.
- 14:37Are I, Me and me and Autumn are watching Hannah Montana like
- 14:41we're going through. It I do, to be fair, I can't
- 14:43wait for Marley to be at the age where I can watch Hannah Montana
- 14:45with her and. We dance.
- 14:47So we've got this playlist. We've got this like Disney, like
- 14:50cool Disney, not just like Little Mermaid, like cool Disney
- 14:54Playlist and we dance to it all the time.
- 14:58The amount of time we've danced. She knows the lyrics to Best of
- 15:00both Worlds. And I think that is like my
- 15:04biggest achievement as a parent so far.
- 15:06I. Was going to say that was your
- 15:08top moment as a mum so far. My kid knows Hannah Montana.
- 15:12My top moment as a mum so far is that my daughter can look at
- 15:15Taylor Swift and say Tay Tay. And.
- 15:19She's not even 2. I have my Crocs, I have little.
- 15:25Are they called like gibbets or something of of tables?
- 15:28Yeah. And every time she sees them,
- 15:30she goes Tay Tay, mummy shoe Tay Tay.
- 15:34Oh, I love her. She loves her so much and
- 15:38honestly sit her in front of the error store, the the actual like
- 15:42performance of the error store on the TV.
- 15:43She's encapsulated, enchanted. You couldn't move her for the
- 15:48world. You could not move her.
- 15:49She's just like. That's so funny.
- 15:52I love it. Well dear, when I was thinking
- 15:55about my this or that this week, I was thinking how can I make
- 15:59life difficult for Taylor this week?
- 16:01Oh nice, like my life needs to be any more difficult.
- 16:04Than it was well you've had a really good weekend so shut your
- 16:07mouth it's. My birthday though.
- 16:10So no, you don't get a win on that one.
- 16:13So on that note, my, this or that is you can only listen to
- 16:18Thunderbirds. I'll go for the rest of your
- 16:19life or or or you can only listen to met this girl for the
- 16:25rest of your life. Brilliant.
- 16:30Absolutely brilliant because I hate both of them.
- 16:34But it's the only song you can listen to for the rest of your
- 16:37life. You're the rest of your life,
- 16:38Taylor. Do you know what's really funny?
- 16:40And it's probably going to contradict.
- 16:42I'm probably going to contradict myself.
- 16:45After our Met This Girl episode, I found myself in my bedroom
- 16:51upstairs putting clothes away singing the song and Jack came
- 16:57in and I went what am I doing? I'm singing that stupid song.
- 17:01I don't even like it. Oh honestly, I was just there.
- 17:07Then I met this girl just the other day.
- 17:12I was like what am I doing? OK, but to contradict that even
- 17:18though it was an earworm and it was stuck in my head, it did
- 17:21drive me mad for days and I genuinely do think I would
- 17:25probably rather listen to Thunderbird soccer.
- 17:29Really. I as much as I dislike
- 17:32Thunderbirds, I'll go. I think I only dislike it
- 17:35because I never really was a Thunderbirds girl.
- 17:37But actually the song is not a bad song because it's a good
- 17:41song in terms of what it's written for.
- 17:44It's a good theme tune. It's a good you know, it was
- 17:46good for the movie. It did the job, met This Girl is
- 17:50an earworm, but it's not a good song so.
- 17:55No comment. No comment.
- 17:56I'm sorry, not going back there. No comment.
- 17:58I'm. Sorry.
- 17:59Also, while we're on the topic of things I've said in the past
- 18:02about McFly songs, can I change my answer because you gave me
- 18:04not not to this question, but you gave me this or that the
- 18:07other day. That was Saturday night and down
- 18:10by the lake and I've changed my mind.
- 18:13Definitely prefer down by the lake.
- 18:15I was listening to me in car earlier and I had Saturday night
- 18:17on. I was like, I need to listen to
- 18:19Down by the Lake so that I can like compare them in my brain.
- 18:21And I put it on and within the first minute I was like, why did
- 18:23I choose Saturday night? Down by the the best McFly it's.
- 18:28So much better. It's so much better than
- 18:30Saturday. Night told any different?
- 18:32I don't know why. I chose it.
- 18:33I genuinely think I just got overwhelmed.
- 18:34It was just like, oh, Saturday night, yes, I've changed my.
- 18:37Answer for all difficult ones. I've changed my answer for last
- 18:40week. This for that as well.
- 18:41But yeah, I would choose Thunderbirds.
- 18:43I'll go. I imagine you would choose,
- 18:44would you choose met this girl. No, I choose Thunderbirds.
- 18:47I go because it's one of my. I like, I love it.
- 18:49I'm. Doing a little dance for those
- 18:53of you that can't see me. I love Thunderbirds, I go and I
- 18:56would love to find a three piece of people, so there's the two of
- 19:00us, so there is an audition. A spot open.
- 19:03The next Thunderbird. It'll be Steve.
- 19:06It'll be Steve. There'll be no, there'll be no
- 19:09competition. It'll be Steve, Steve.
- 19:12Just to the next Buster concert as Thunderbirds.
- 19:14Steve, we'll be back soon guys, we know you.
- 19:16We know you all love Steve. We'll bring him back so you
- 19:19don't worry. We've just got such a big list
- 19:21of guests to. Come on, we do and it's actually
- 19:24really flattering like every other day when you get a message
- 19:27on Instagram, like our Instagram following isn't huge compared to
- 19:30our listeners on here, but people find us on.
- 19:33Instagram, it's mental. We got so many more listeners
- 19:37opposed to people on socials. And do you know what I think it
- 19:40is? I think a lot of people our age
- 19:42and people that listen to me like don't use social media
- 19:44anymore. There's so many people that
- 19:46don't use social media and like, we don't really do TikTok.
- 19:48We do a little bit of TikTok here and there.
- 19:51We're just not. Could you imagine a 32 year old
- 19:53using Snapchat? Oh no, no, probably.
- 19:56There probably are 32 year olds that use Snapchat listening
- 19:59right now. We're not judging you.
- 20:00We're just saying no, no, no, we're not that.
- 20:02We're not cool enough to be. Honest, it's not like, yeah,
- 20:05yeah, yeah, exactly. I yeah.
- 20:08But it's like it's really overwhelming when people like
- 20:10that don't follow us on Instagram, Message us on
- 20:13Instagram and say, hey, I listen to your podcast all the time.
- 20:16Are you open for guests? Like you don't think you've gone
- 20:19out of your way to find our Instagram page to message us?
- 20:24Exactly. And do you know what?
- 20:25I've got a little notes on my phone with a list of people that
- 20:29want to come on the podcast because trying to find dates for
- 20:32them all. I can think like 2 months ahead
- 20:34and that's all that will work in my brain.
- 20:36And we try not to have more than like 2 guests in like a six week
- 20:39period. Otherwise it's like not our
- 20:41podcast anymore of guests on every week.
- 20:43As lovely as it is. Yeah, it's, it's, it's nice.
- 20:47We, we appreciate you all. Thank you so much.
- 20:50And lots more to come as I'm sure we've got lots already
- 20:54booked in. So exciting times.
- 21:00It's time for Song of the Week. It's a juicy one this week
- 21:04because we are talking about Busted song all the way
- 21:20now. If you haven't heard this one,
- 21:22we just want you to remember. But in the early noughties,
- 21:25music got away with a lot more than it does today lyrically.
- 21:30OK, so just keep that in your mind.
- 21:32It was a long time ago. It really, really did and we
- 21:36are. We're going to be decoding the
- 21:38lyrics and discussing what they mean, as well as thinking about
- 21:41how they have all haven't aged well.
- 21:45Yes, it's it's going to be a lot of interesting opinions, I think
- 21:49in this in this context, but what I would like our listeners
- 21:53to think about is think about the context of the time opposed
- 21:57to it now, yes, perhaps in today's world and not only have
- 22:02we were talking about this song, but I've also found a lot of
- 22:04other songs with you that definitely have been aged well.
- 22:07And honestly, there are some absolute bangers on there.
- 22:10But I definitely used to dance around him when I was a
- 22:13teenager, probably two in a club at some point as well when I
- 22:17was. Also still dance around 2 as a
- 22:2032 year. As an adult, yeah, exactly.
- 22:22But some of them have not aged well.
- 22:25But we'll just keep in mind of the time they were of the time,
- 22:29a bit like movies, you know, when Disney does those, like I
- 22:31think it's The Jungle Book where it comes up at the beginning.
- 22:33And we're like, we are aware that the some of the ideologies
- 22:37and things represented in this movie are no longer acceptable
- 22:40by, you know, society standards. But we like to keep it because
- 22:43it's representing of the time. That's what we're going to be
- 22:45talking about today. Yeah.
- 22:46So shall we start with our ratings out of 10?
- 22:50Yes, and I'm going to put you on the spot this week, so I'd like
- 22:52you to go first please. I feel like I've gone 1st and
- 22:56you've really ripped me for quite a few of mine so I'd like
- 22:59you to go fast. That's fine, that's fine.
- 23:02I want to premise this that I really like this song.
- 23:06Yeah, we agree. I do.
- 23:09I do. We agree.
- 23:10The first time in ages. And although like I'm not giving
- 23:15these like these lyrics are genuinely like CD, so most of
- 23:21them, 90% of them are gross. And I think listening back then,
- 23:25if I understood if I wasn't an actual child, I would have been
- 23:29like, what the fuck are you singing about?
- 23:31But two? 1000 and two 2002 this was we
- 23:35were 9. Literally, if I knew what it was
- 23:39about, I would have probably been like, Mum, why you let me
- 23:41listen to this literally. My mum wouldn't have let me have
- 23:45the CD if she really listened to it.
- 23:48Yeah, yeah, right. I think that it's a really good
- 23:54song. Do you know what it is?
- 23:55It's a good pop song. Yeah.
- 23:58It's just a good pop song and if you don't deep it too much it's
- 24:04it's really good. I'm going to give it a 7.
- 24:07Good. OK, I'm pleased with that.
- 24:09I agree in that I think it's it's just catchy.
- 24:13And yeah, after looking at some of the live versions this week
- 24:19and some of the performances that Busted did of it, people
- 24:22loved this song. People screamed bloody murder
- 24:28for all three of them boys when they were singing this song.
- 24:31And they remember they were young.
- 24:32They were like 20 and like 18 at this point, you know, like 2000
- 24:37and two 2003 Busted very, very early doors.
- 24:40But don't you look at them and think, how can you?
- 24:44How can you wear those clothes singing and look that dorky?
- 24:49I know I'm. Singing these words.
- 24:51Back then we were up. We were with the baggy jeans and
- 24:54the chains and the spiky hair and James's like weird hat and
- 25:00his like slap down fringe. I mean, I, I saw that video of
- 25:04them performing this live. Did you hear the screams when
- 25:06James started singing? Yeah, no, I know That was me.
- 25:09But still, like it was me. That was me.
- 25:12I was in the CDUK audience. I wish I was.
- 25:17I love James. I mean, I love them all, but
- 25:19equally. I think what this song does or
- 25:24did to us as young girls was just made us realise how much we
- 25:28fancied them because we were like, yeah, I'd go all the way
- 25:32for you, Charlie. Yeah, but I didn't understand it
- 25:35then. Like I still like I was nine
- 25:37years. Old I wouldn't have a 10 Yeah,
- 25:38no, I would not have 10 When when Like I really, I think I
- 25:42started really listening to Busted more when they broke up
- 25:46because they were everywhere and everybody was so sad that I
- 25:49think I obviously listened to them when they were together.
- 25:52But I think songs like all the way when overly play, I think I
- 25:57listened to like year 3000 and you know, like the the first
- 25:59what I go to school for and the first sort of like 5-6 tracks on
- 26:02the album would have been the first ones that I really, really
- 26:04listened to. And like all the way it was a
- 26:07bit more of an obscure 1. I don't remember it being played
- 26:09on like like the radio or like I used to watch like Smash Hits TV
- 26:15and I don't. Yeah.
- 26:17And I don't really remember. Then again, I was like 10, so
- 26:20you know, I probably wouldn't have.
- 26:21Remembered that, Yeah. But I actually, I tell you
- 26:23something. I do remember watching that
- 26:25performance on CDUK, the one that we've posted on Instagram.
- 26:28Yeah, Yeah, I remember because I used to watch CDUK every single
- 26:32weekend with my mum and my brother.
- 26:35And I actually remember because I hadn't.
- 26:38That's the first time I heard the song.
- 26:41So I I had the album, but I'd not like really listen to the
- 26:45songs I mean. The ones you really like.
- 26:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's at that age you're like,
- 26:50Oh my God, what I go to school for?
- 26:53Yeah, exactly. But I remember seeing this on
- 26:55the telly and I remember thinking, Oh my God, these boys
- 26:59can sang like these boys, these boys can sing.
- 27:05I used to think that it was like it was because all the other
- 27:09songs are fun and rocky and like.
- 27:12Silly and. Exciting and silly and this was
- 27:15like bearing in mind. Again, I will reiterate, I
- 27:19didn't understand the lyrics but I thought it was so sweet.
- 27:25Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 27:26It's like the air of it. Like, in terms of like the tone,
- 27:30it's quite romantic. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:34I'm like it's almost. He's like, I, I know, you know,
- 27:36I've had it up to here. Yeah, really.
- 27:38That's what he's saying. But he's like, you know, I've
- 27:40had it up to. He's like, how are you like?
- 27:43Dreamy, you need to be more clear, girl.
- 27:47Stop telling me you're gonna go all the way and then telling me
- 27:49no, you bitch. That's pretty much what it was
- 27:51your. What's your rating though?
- 27:53So I interrupted you. What's your rating?
- 27:55Sorry. I'd give it a give it a six,
- 27:58maybe a six and a half, a six, 6 1/2.
- 28:01I do like it. I think there are better songs.
- 28:03I'm not sure it's worthy of a seven.
- 28:05I think I'll stick with six. Yeah.
- 28:07But I do, I do feel like of the, it is very odd for the time.
- 28:11It's not now when you look at it as an adult and we live in, you
- 28:15know, the consent culture that we live in, Life wasn't like
- 28:19that back then. I can remember being at school
- 28:21and boys thinking it was OK to just grab you.
- 28:23Like that happened all the time. That was just a normal thing.
- 28:26Do you know what I mean? Used to go to like under 18
- 28:29clubs and just get smacked on the bum like all the time.
- 28:31Like that was just a normal thing, people trying to grab you
- 28:34and lift your skirts up and stuff.
- 28:35Like now that's like a serious offence, do you know what I
- 28:39mean? Like that was just, that was our
- 28:41life. You've got you've got to
- 28:43understand things are getting out of hand.
- 28:47You can't just leave me sitting here unseen to I'm so.
- 28:52Sorry babe, I'd never discuss. You know I don't know what to do
- 28:58or how long to wait for you. You said you needed time, so I
- 29:02won't rush you. I won't rush you, but you said
- 29:05that you would, and then you changed your mind.
- 29:06How could you do this to me? It's just so unkind.
- 29:08Such a bitch. Oh, and it's cruel.
- 29:13It's cruel. If you say that, you'll go all
- 29:15the way. It's cruel.
- 29:17She's being cruel because she doesn't want to sleep with it.
- 29:22So bad. It's cruel.
- 29:24It's so bad. I can't.
- 29:25Wait for the day that you don't change your mind.
- 29:29Can't wait. Bring it on.
- 29:35Can we talk about the the bridge?
- 29:37Because good old man, because actually Charlie sings the first
- 29:42verse, they will sing the chorus.
- 29:43James sings the second verse, they will sing the chorus.
- 29:47And then Matt, I'll never let you down.
- 29:51I'll always be around when you need someone to catch you when
- 29:57you fall down. Oh my God, Matt, I love you so
- 29:59much. Can I just?
- 30:01Say, if you, if you decide. You want to.
- 30:04Yeah. Thank you.
- 30:05Babe, yeah, if you want me to say that I'm only a phone call
- 30:07away. Just.
- 30:08Call me, I'll come over. And that is that should have
- 30:11been the. Error of the song I think.
- 30:13I romanticise that bridge so hard actually when you listen to
- 30:20it as an adult in context with the rest of the song.
- 30:24Matt's the worst. They're all being very honest.
- 30:27He's guilt tripping the fuck out of her.
- 30:29Probably he's probably just they're.
- 30:31Not being really honest. Yeah, he's though James and
- 30:36Charlie. You're gross, but you're honest.
- 30:38Matt, he's like, come on, I'm only a phone call away.
- 30:41I'm only around the corner. Just give me a.
- 30:43Call if you decide. You want to get down and dirty
- 30:45tonight? Yeah.
- 30:48But like, romantically? Romantically.
- 30:51They'll be very petals. I didn't see it like that.
- 30:53I always saw it. Oh well, I say it always.
- 30:55I didn't see it at all badly in that light before.
- 30:58But I think as an adult, I saw it as always seen it as Matt
- 31:00trying to like reclaim some of that that manly, you know, power
- 31:05without being an absolute sleaze ball and saying you're a
- 31:09horrible woman because you won't sleep with me.
- 31:12That's just, it's just hilarious to me.
- 31:14Who wrote this song? Who was it?
- 31:16James. Oh, let's have a look.
- 31:18Let me do producer who wrote. Oh, hang on, because there's
- 31:26always a few. Sometimes they've got extras,
- 31:28haven't they? James and Charlie, along with
- 31:31songwriter and producer Steve Robson.
- 31:33James Bourne. Yeah.
- 31:36James. And Charlie.
- 31:37No, Matt. Matt gets the.
- 31:39That's why Matt. That's why Matt gets the the
- 31:42bridge. Because it's the nicest thing.
- 31:43Because he didn't write it. Yeah.
- 31:46James Bourne with that bloody cap and those I mean.
- 31:50I don't get me wrong, James Bond till I die.
- 31:54Peace to James, love him so much.
- 31:57He wasn't the heartthrob of Busted, let's put it that way.
- 32:00And actually. I think he wrote this song
- 32:01because he wasn't getting laid. That's what I think.
- 32:04He wanted people to think that he wasn't, but it wasn't his
- 32:08fault. It was their fault.
- 32:09Girls just don't want to sleep with me and they're bitches for
- 32:12it. Can I bring up the first episode
- 32:17or Part 1 of Matt Willis's Memory Lane episode on On the
- 32:22Mend? Because he talks about how, and
- 32:26it doesn't really relate to this song.
- 32:27But from what you just said, we talked about how James wasn't
- 32:29really the heartthrob and how Charlie and Matt were always
- 32:32like the ones that like the girls always wanted a little bit
- 32:34more. They were a bit more like, you
- 32:35know, he said, he described like when when Charlie decided he
- 32:40wanted to leave the band, he actually said that Charlie told
- 32:44Matt before he told anyone else, like he he assumed, but Matt was
- 32:48wasted and was like, yeah, man, you know, you do you like you've
- 32:52got to do you, you've got to put have faith in yourself, you
- 32:55know. And then the next day he was
- 32:56like, oh fuck, he's leaving the band.
- 32:58Like I told him to leave, man. But Matt goes on to say how when
- 33:05when they split, James sort of went to Matt and said, you know,
- 33:08what do we do? Do we just carry on without him?
- 33:10Do you want to like carry on the ban without him?
- 33:12And Matt was like, no, because we're only busted with him.
- 33:17We tried to do it with just me and you and we didn't get
- 33:19anywhere. And he said when you looked at
- 33:22all the pictures on the magazines and the billboards and
- 33:25the posters and everything, it was always Charlie in the centre
- 33:28and then then these two. And I think he described him as
- 33:30like 2 dorky or dweeby guys in the background.
- 33:34I was like, Oh my, give yourself more credit because we love you.
- 33:39But that was the way it was portrayed.
- 33:41Charlie was the heartthrob. Charlie was.
- 33:43We were in the eyebrow era. Yeah, James was the sort of
- 33:48nerdy, dweely one that like, you know, us nerds loved.
- 33:51And then Matt was like the bad boy with the attitude and the
- 33:54spiky hair and the purple spiky hair and the studded belts and,
- 33:57you know, like they had very different energies, the three of
- 34:01them that worked really well together.
- 34:04I think they made the right decision.
- 34:05I think if Busted had been just James and Matt after that, it
- 34:08would have plunked and nothing would have come of them again.
- 34:12Do you know what I mean? And I'm so glad that it worked
- 34:14out the way it did for them because we love Busted.
- 34:17And for all of you McFly fly girls and boys out there that
- 34:21listen to only the McFly episodes, you won't be listening
- 34:23to this anyway. But I know that there are people
- 34:26that skip the Busted episode, which is fine, but we are
- 34:32hashtag Galaxy crashers forever. Love both of the bands equally.
- 34:36I mean, we obviously have said that we are probably more McFly
- 34:39girls than Busted, but that does not mean that we don't love
- 34:41them. And it's only because they
- 34:42weren't around long enough for us to become better.
- 34:45I think it's because I've grown with McFly.
- 34:48I don't think it's 'cause I like them anymore.
- 34:51It's just Busted became a nostalgic band, whereas McFly
- 34:55was still there. They were.
- 34:57There. They were there constantly.
- 34:59Yeah, exactly. We didn't.
- 35:00Have enough time? More than the other.
- 35:02Yeah, we didn't have enough time with Busted.
- 35:03That's the main thing. That's all it is.
- 35:05And I think they changed so much, didn't they, when they
- 35:07came back as well? Like with we were just talking
- 35:09about this, we were talking about the episodes to come and
- 35:11like we're talking about the Night Driver album and like how
- 35:14it was such a different sound for them.
- 35:16And like, I think when we get to Night Driver and we compare that
- 35:19to halfway there, it's going to be so weird because Halfway
- 35:22there is Busted. Night Driver is not the Busted
- 35:26that we knew. And I think that's why the album
- 35:28didn't quite do as well as we thought it was going to.
- 35:33But yeah, I mean, to sum up this song, catchy, vibey back in the
- 35:38day, I loved it. Now with kind of culture that we
- 35:42live in, probably not very good in terms of its lyrics, not
- 35:48socially acceptable. So just for fun, I, you know, I
- 35:53have a bit of a love for ChatGPT.
- 35:56I. I use ChatGPT occasionally to
- 35:59help me write emails and stuff I can't be bothered to write
- 36:04myself because GPT writes them better than me.
- 36:08I thought I'd ask ChatGPT to rewrite the song all the way,
- 36:13but with 2026 vibes of consent and healthy relationships.
- 36:17And I'm not going to lie, I was actually quite impressed.
- 36:21I genuinely, I asked ChatGPT to rewrite it, keeping the same
- 36:26structure, the same rhyming patterns, the same syllable, so
- 36:29that you could still sing it in the same way but with different
- 36:32lyrics. So I'm just going to read you a
- 36:33few of the the changes. First one.
- 36:37Sing it to me. I'm.
- 36:38Not going to sing it to you, although I could do because it's
- 36:40not really copyright. Because, you know, ChatGPT.
- 36:44OK. It happens every time.
- 36:46I feel the sparks align. We start to get close but then
- 36:50you pause me. No rush, We'll take it slow.
- 36:53Let the moment grow because what we have is real.
- 36:56I'll follow your lead and the pre chorus.
- 36:58Because you said that you might and I respect your mind.
- 37:01I'll never push your pressure. I know love takes time and it's
- 37:05fine if you say that you need some space.
- 37:07I'll honour your pace. I won't change your mind.
- 37:13Chorus. I mean, this isn't the chorus.
- 37:16This is. That was actually the chorus.
- 37:17This is the next verse. You've got to understand.
- 37:19I'm here to hold your hand. I can't just push or pull you
- 37:23into. I'll be right here.
- 37:25No need to fear. I'll wait for the moment you
- 37:28feel it's true. Because you've said that you
- 37:30might. And I respect your mind.
- 37:31I'll never push your pressure. I know love takes time and it's
- 37:34fine if you say that you need some space.
- 37:36I'll honour your pace. I won't change your mind.
- 37:38I won't change your mind, Bridge.
- 37:41Are you ready for the bridge? I'll never let you down.
- 37:44I'll always be around when you need someone to catch you.
- 37:46When you fall down waiting here for you if you decide you want
- 37:49to. If you want me to say I'm only a
- 37:51phone call away. Didn't change anything.
- 37:53Because it is the epitome of a healthy relationship.
- 37:58Because actually, when you put it with the rest of the song in
- 38:00this rewrite, it's nice. It's actually quite healthy.
- 38:03So fair play, that verse, that section of the song, the bridge
- 38:06worked. Well done.
- 38:08And again, because you said that you might and I respect your
- 38:11mind. I'll never push and pressure you
- 38:12and take Simon. It's fine if you say that you
- 38:14need some space. I'll only a pace.
- 38:16I won't change your mind. I won't change your mind.
- 38:19How do you feel? Do you like it?
- 38:21I think it is fucking shit. I think it's it's like, it's
- 38:31good, but it's. Just a bit.
- 38:33Sad the CD original. I think I think you might be
- 38:37right. Pausing.
- 38:40Yeah, I'll never push or pressure.
- 38:43I know love takes time, and it's fine if you.
- 38:45Oh, yeah. Hang on.
- 38:46Where's the pause, Bert? I'll never push or pressure you.
- 38:50No rush would. Yeah, we start to get close, but
- 38:53then you pause me. No rush.
- 38:55We'll take it slow. Let the moment grow.
- 38:58Because what we have is real. I'll follow your lead because
- 39:01you said that you might. And I respect your mind.
- 39:04I'll never push your pressure. You.
- 39:05I know love takes time and it's fine if you say that you need
- 39:09some space. I'll honour your pace.
- 39:11I won't change your mind. OK, can I just say I now think I
- 39:18give the original an 8? 10 out of 10, but.
- 39:25For. GPT I mean, it's very 2026 with
- 39:28healthy vibes of consent, right? Doesn't really make for a good
- 39:32song, but lyrically it's nice. So we've talked about Busted all
- 39:39the way and that very naughties idea of being personally
- 39:43offended when a girl sets a boundary, because obviously
- 39:45that's pretty much what they're saying.
- 39:47Which got us thinking, the naughties and early 20 Tens were
- 39:51full of pop songs that we all loved at the time, but lyrically
- 39:55are absolutely. Wild in hindsight, yeah.
- 40:00So we asked you guys on our socials what songs you think
- 40:03haven't aged well and these are some of your answers mixed in
- 40:07with a few of our own ideas. Can I just say this first one
- 40:11was the first song that I thought about when we started
- 40:15like thinking about this section, we said that we might
- 40:18do songs with like lyrics that perhaps aren't of today's time.
- 40:23My first, my first choice. And this was also one of the
- 40:26ones that was sent in is Unfaithful by Rihanna, which was
- 40:29released released in 2006. Now you best believe believe I
- 40:36screamed this song. Yeah, right.
- 40:39Also, why was I? Why was I loving this song?
- 40:42And also weirdly feeling sorry for Rihanna.
- 40:45Literally she's cheating on this guy.
- 40:48Like the song is very it is quite heartbreaking and it is
- 40:53beautifully written in the in the musicality of it, the
- 40:57crescendos and the like lifts. Like I love the musicality of
- 41:05it, but it's actually completely about how bad she feels for
- 41:11cheating on her partner. Yeah, but she doesn't even feel
- 41:15bad though. She doesn't.
- 41:17Yeah, she does. She does, she says.
- 41:18It kills me inside. That's the lyric.
- 41:21I feel it in the air as I'm doing my hair prefer preparing
- 41:25for another date. A kiss upon my cheek as he
- 41:28reluctantly as it asks if I'm going to be out late.
- 41:31I say I won't be long, I'm just hanging with the girls.
- 41:34A lie I didn't have to tell because we both know where I'm
- 41:37about to go and we know it very well.
- 41:42And I know that he I need to stop singing.
- 41:44I'm sorry everyone, I'm not a pop singer.
- 41:48I love his trust. I might as well take a gun and
- 41:51put it to his head. Get over with.
- 41:54Yeah, yeah, Brutal. It's very brutal.
- 41:57She's killing it as well. It's like we, she says.
- 42:01And I know that he knows I'm unfaithful and it kills, kills
- 42:05him inside to know that I'm happy with another guy.
- 42:09She doesn't say that she feels bad.
- 42:10She says that he feels bad, which is in my head, that in my
- 42:15head she was saying that she feels bad.
- 42:17But actually, when you think about the actual lyrics, she
- 42:19doesn't say that she says that he feels bad.
- 42:22So really, the guy that's being cheated on in this song is just
- 42:24a prop. So we can feel bad for her
- 42:25crying in the rain. I feel like, I feel like this
- 42:31song could have like her crying in the background.
- 42:34Do you know what I mean? You know the music video, it's
- 42:36like tear. No, it's not tears, is it?
- 42:38It's like raindrops in the. Music video, yeah.
- 42:40Yeah, yeah, Like in my head, that was her crying and I'm
- 42:42feeling sorry for her. Why am I feeling sorry for you?
- 42:45Exactly. And it like one of the main
- 42:48things I think is very much like, it's not when you think of
- 42:52somebody committing adultery, somebody cheating somebody, you
- 42:54know, the cheater is the the person that should have the
- 42:59consequences. Do you know, I mean, like she
- 43:01should be the one that's suffering.
- 43:03And actually it's him. And she's saying I might as well
- 43:06put a gun to his head and get it over with because he's going to
- 43:08die because I'm. So much he's going to.
- 43:11Die. She's not that she's going to
- 43:15hurt him. She like is hurting him because
- 43:17he knows. She's already doing it.
- 43:18Yeah, exactly. A lie she didn't have to tell
- 43:21because they she. Did it anyway.
- 43:23Yeah. They know that she's cheating on
- 43:24him anyway, So what? What's the point?
- 43:26Might as well just do it. Do you know what I mean?
- 43:27Absolutely disgusting. And very much like, like
- 43:31victimising her, like, for feeling guilty.
- 43:36Yeah. Do you know what I mean?
- 43:37It's like we're trying to, we're looking at her feeling guilty as
- 43:40a tragedy. And I think that is just
- 43:42ridiculous. That's not the tragedy in that
- 43:45song. The tragedy is you being a bitch
- 43:47and cheating on your man when he's at home, you know, looking
- 43:50out for you, wondering where you are.
- 43:52Stop it. Actual idea.
- 43:55So, yeah, that was and that was the first one that I thought of
- 43:58when we started talking about this segment.
- 43:59So there we go. Do you want to do the next one?
- 44:03OK, so another one we were sent in was Justin Timberlake's Cry
- 44:07Me a River. I this is a banger in my eyes.
- 44:12I love this kind of like music. Like this is where I go to when
- 44:17I listen to nostalgic music. Yes, it's about Brittany
- 44:22apparently sleeping with her choreographer.
- 44:24And Brittany also did a retaliation to that, which was
- 44:28every time. So that was her retaliation to.
- 44:33Which was quite a brutal music video from what I recall of
- 44:37every time. And I remember her being in the
- 44:39bath, like slitting her wrists or something, you know, trigger
- 44:42warning. It was it's it's very emotional,
- 44:46very like suicide heavy, like completely opposite to what he's
- 44:53done with this song because this song is very much oh, cry me a
- 44:55river, get over it. And then she's like in the bath.
- 44:58She's basically saying I can't get over it.
- 45:01Literally. So I think it's very, yeah, it
- 45:05it create a very public scenario, didn't it, at the end
- 45:10of the day? Yeah, but I think back then it
- 45:13was so normal to publicise your break UPS like you had like,
- 45:21well, the big one obviously is Justin and Brittany.
- 45:25They went everywhere. But you had like, Brad Pitt and
- 45:30Jen. I went to say Rachel from
- 45:33Friends then. Jennifer Aniston Yeah, yeah, I
- 45:36get. You like you had all of the
- 45:38like. Every breakup was so public,
- 45:41like every time David Beckham cheated on Victoria Beckham.
- 45:43It was everywhere, everywhere. That was, I think it, like you
- 45:46said, it's the media from the naughties.
- 45:48It was very much about exposing people and like it being very
- 45:52heavy on, on scandal, you know, and I mean.
- 45:55Yeah, we still. We still see scandal.
- 45:57We all remember the I'm A Celebrity issue again, it's
- 46:01paparazzi and it's it's scandal and it's wanting to expose to
- 46:07the world when actually those types of scenarios and and the
- 46:11way that that situation was handled was the best way it
- 46:14could have been handled. There was just nothing.
- 46:16There was no replies. There was one comment made and
- 46:19that's it. And that was how it needed to be
- 46:21addressed. It needed to be.
- 46:23Everybody knew that it'd happened and everybody knew that
- 46:25it needed to be addressed, but it did not need to be made into
- 46:27this massive thing. And the longer they left it
- 46:29without saying anything, the more people just forgot about
- 46:31it. Forgot about it.
- 46:32Yeah, definitely. We had one statement then that
- 46:35was it. Yeah, yeah, 100%.
- 46:37But back then, like you would see that as oh, like I think I
- 46:42feel like his producers and his management team and all of that
- 46:46saw the break up as a money making scheme.
- 46:49Oh God. I mean, it was for everything.
- 46:52Yeah, yeah. And I think it paved the way for
- 46:55like, there were so many. Like tit for tat.
- 47:00Tit for tat that just sold songs like Eamonn and Frankie they
- 47:06Fuck you and the fuck you right back songs.
- 47:08Anybody know who they are anymore?
- 47:10Can I also just say to people listening that me and Shannon
- 47:12just had a little bitch fit when we remembered this about 5
- 47:14minutes ago songs because we we could remember what it was about
- 47:18but. Couldn't remember who it was.
- 47:19And then we Googled and then we were like, Oh my God, this song.
- 47:21How? But I tell you what, I know
- 47:23those lyrics like I know my child's birthday.
- 47:28Like I swear down maybe better. I used to just scream this and
- 47:33you know what I can remember her, her retaliation.
- 47:36Fuck you right back being talking about him having crabs,
- 47:40having crabs and smoking crack. She says she must be smoking
- 47:44crack, telling everybody just how you feel like girl.
- 47:50And it was again, a lot of the retaliation.
- 47:54You know, he said this, so she said this.
- 47:57It was all a ploy. It wasn't even real.
- 48:01Those songs were written because of the way that Justin versus
- 48:05Britney, Jen versus Brad, all this stuff was going on.
- 48:08So they were like, oh, let's make music about breakups and
- 48:11see if people will listen to them.
- 48:12And suckers that we are. All downloaded them from
- 48:15Limewire, put them on our MP3 players.
- 48:18I loved them. I loved the shit out of those
- 48:21two. 1000 and three 2004 like it was early early songs that we
- 48:27again 2004 I was 11, 11 and I was singing You must be smoking
- 48:32crack and you fuck. Those presents, I threw all that
- 48:37shit out. Fuck all that crying.
- 48:41It didn't mean Jack. Fuck you, you ho.
- 48:44I don't want you back. Like what?
- 48:49Oh God, this episode's going to be so much longer than we need
- 48:52it to be because there's still so many songs and it's just so
- 48:55much fun. Just cut all the rest of the
- 48:56episode. It'll just be 1 episode talking
- 48:58about this stuff. Can I add in one that I had a
- 49:01moment ago that just sprung to my head that we haven't got on
- 49:04this list? Does anybody remember first day
- 49:09I saw her was at the train station.
- 49:11The train station. She was half black, half called
- 49:14Cajun. Cajun, does anybody remember
- 49:16this? The last.
- 49:16Line man she. Was that girl?
- 49:19Was it 14? 14 yeah, girl was 14.
- 49:24So the song we're talking about is Charmaine.
- 49:27Is it Plan B? I'm pretty sure it's Plan B, and
- 49:30it's called Charmaine. Yeah, and it is literally.
- 49:32Is it on the playlist? Yes, because I feel like an
- 49:34absolute gangster when I sing along.
- 49:36But oh God, you know. It's all it's literally about
- 49:40him having sex with a 14 year old.
- 49:42Girl. Get out of my mind.
- 49:45My love is way out of line. He knows how bad it is and he's
- 49:52still like, young. Girl.
- 49:54Get. Out what, Jeffrey?
- 49:58Can we just oh God, let's not get on that controversial.
- 50:07Can I also just highlight how obviously it the the song is is
- 50:13it's illegal what he's thinking about Yeah, it's literally like
- 50:18considered illegal, you know things.
- 50:22But can we also? It's absolutely disgusting.
- 50:23Can we also just appreciate how normal it was for 14 year old
- 50:29girls to have boyfriends that were like 1819 because.
- 50:33I had a 19 year old. Boyfriend when I was 14, not
- 50:36whether my mum knew that or not, but he was 19, he was called Ben
- 50:39and he moved to Australia. He was a lovely guy.
- 50:42He was actually a really nice guy, but he was 19 and I was 14.
- 50:46I can remember him driving us around.
- 50:47He used to pick me and my friends up down the road and
- 50:49drive us around in his little Citroen such.
- 50:51So fucking weird though. Gross.
- 50:54Like think about it now. Gross.
- 50:55That's disgusting. But you at the time, that was
- 50:59very normal. It was really normal.
- 51:02Oh, nearly every girl that I knew at school, like all of we
- 51:05all had boyfriends that were at college, like I was 14 until I
- 51:10met, I met my high school sweetheart Zach, like before
- 51:15that, but I was very persistent with him.
- 51:18He really didn't want a girlfriend and I was like,
- 51:20you'll, you'll want me eventually.
- 51:21And he did and we were together for two years.
- 51:24So, you know, I got there in the end, But I, I like, he was the
- 51:28only boyfriend I had that was my age.
- 51:30I always had a boyfriend that was older than me.
- 51:33It's so weird because like I thought when I was in, what year
- 51:37was I in? I think I was in year 9.
- 51:40I had a boyfriend who was in sixth form and I felt, I
- 51:44remember feeling really weird about that.
- 51:46And it that isn't even that much older, that's like 3 years older
- 51:50ish. But it didn't really odd for me,
- 51:55like I did not like that. Yeah, I didn't at all.
- 51:59I fancy Justin Bieber. Well, yeah.
- 52:03He was singing Young Boy, Get out of My Mind because he's a
- 52:09year younger than you. Yeah.
- 52:13Yeah, no, I just think it was a very different time for age gaps
- 52:17and and things like that. It was very strange, but we all,
- 52:20we all had that had boyfriends that could drive and like would
- 52:23pick us up after school in their cars.
- 52:26And I can remember the school like ringing my mum to say like
- 52:30Taylor's getting picked up by a guy in a car.
- 52:32Like, do you know who this is? And she was like, Oh yeah, it's
- 52:34her boyfriend. Like it she knew who he was.
- 52:36I don't know whether she knew he was 19.
- 52:38I think I may have told her he was 17, who knows?
- 52:42Sorry mum, but he was really nice, like he was.
- 52:45There was no like pressure or anything with him.
- 52:46We literally were just like. I love that you knew it was
- 52:49wrong enough to lie about his age.
- 52:51Oh yeah, 100. Percent, you didn't.
- 52:53I think it was because he was like, he was like driving and
- 52:56stuff and like I knew my mum would have been fuming about me
- 52:59having a boyfriend who was like 19.
- 53:01She would not have been happy with that.
- 53:02I was 40, do you know what I mean?
- 53:05But there was no we, we, we were always just like, it was very
- 53:08like hold hands and kiss and hug.
- 53:10And it was, there was nothing more to it.
- 53:11But it was still really not OK, because who did?
- 53:14Who's to say that it wouldn't have eventually been like that
- 53:17if he hadn't have moved away or, you know, like I was still
- 53:20really young. Yeah, really strange, really
- 53:22weird. But again, happened a lot so.
- 53:26I just had like a huge flashback about Lee, who was the boy that
- 53:30I dated who was in sick form. And I remember I fancied him for
- 53:33ages and then we dated literally for two weeks because once I'd
- 53:38got him, I didn't like him. Like his whole persona gave me
- 53:42the ick so bad. And I broke up with him over
- 53:45text because I was like, sorry, I've got to concentrate on my
- 53:48GCSE's. But it was like in 30 characters
- 53:51or 30 words, because you couldn't text that much, that
- 53:54many words when you were like. Back then, is that his name?
- 53:57Lee. Honestly, I fancied I've
- 53:59answered him so much. And then yeah, I think 2 weeks
- 54:03we went for a walk I remember through a place called Saint
- 54:06Mary Church. We went for this walk and I
- 54:09remember thinking, stop talking. Your voice is so fucking
- 54:12annoying. You're.
- 54:16Such a. Bitch, how brutal is that?
- 54:19Like I would just say that like, yeah, Madden, it was awful and I
- 54:24fancied him for so long. For so long.
- 54:28I was thinking of I like I was very my high school sweetheart.
- 54:33I was very persistent with and he always used to say he used to
- 54:36say I was persistent, which I I probably didn't know that word
- 54:39before he dropped me. I he was, he was, oh, bless him.
- 54:46He was such a little nerdy little.
- 54:47He was in a band, so he used to play the drums, which was kind
- 54:50of cool. So I think I liked that he was
- 54:53just a really good guy. He was like clever and I knew he
- 54:56came from a nice family and like, I don't know, just just
- 54:59really liked him and he never really wanted a girlfriend.
- 55:02So he was just like, no, no, I don't want a girlfriend, don't
- 55:04want a girlfriend. And I was just like, dude, come
- 55:06the fuck up. You will, you're in year 9.
- 55:08Come on, it's time to have a girlfriend.
- 55:10Got him in the end. He then broke up with me at
- 55:12college two years later and broke my heart.
- 55:16But he's a nice guy. You know, like over the years,
- 55:18like we, we've like spoken here and there.
- 55:20You know, he's supporting a message when we got married and
- 55:23when we had Molly to say, you know, congratulations and stuff.
- 55:25And it's nice that you can have that with like, because I'm in
- 55:28Christ. We were 17 when I broke up.
- 55:30We broke up like we don't know each.
- 55:31Other at all. No, sorry, but you know.
- 55:35Everyone gave me the echo you. Know yeah you don't speak to any
- 55:38of them anymore because they all give you I think he's the only
- 55:41he's the only ex-boyfriend that I would like say hello to in the
- 55:44street though do you know what I mean oh the rest I would cross
- 55:48cross the road no thank you anyway moving on now this one
- 55:54hurts a little bit because as we all know this is an absolute
- 55:57banger and we love Tay Tay but lyrically it's very very early
- 56:04it's 2010 so very early twenty 10's and it's very misogynistic
- 56:09it's better than revenge which. I won't hear a bad word said
- 56:14about this. Such a good song.
- 56:16And I again, scream it, but it's very much aimed the the song is
- 56:22aimed at the girl that her boyfriend is cheating on her
- 56:26with. Well, not Yeah, like, pretty
- 56:29much. So she's pretty much saying he
- 56:31gets a free pass, but she's pissed off with her.
- 56:34And I just think it's really like, I don't know, it's a bit
- 56:37like sad, you know, like he's the one that's cheating on you,
- 56:40babe. Do you know what I mean?
- 56:41I can, I, I find that really hard.
- 56:43Like, but I've been in that situation and like, like
- 56:46obviously they if, if she knows, then it's a bit different.
- 56:49She knows that he's got a girlfriend and he's cheating on
- 56:51her, then yeah, she's a bitch. But equally he's also a prick.
- 56:54He needs to be put in his place too.
- 56:58And obviously we know that she did the lyric change.
- 57:00So the original lyric change was in the chorus that she's better
- 57:06known for the things that she does on the mattress, which is
- 57:09very much slut shaming. And Taylor has addressed this
- 57:13herself in that she doesn't like the lyrics and she knows that
- 57:17slut shaming isn't good and whatever.
- 57:19So she changed the lyrics to he was a moth to the flame.
- 57:22She was holding the matches and both, you know, good map, good
- 57:27lyrics. She knew that the original
- 57:29wasn't probably the best choice after, you know, looking back at
- 57:32it, when she got to re record them, she changed them.
- 57:34But you and I both know what we sing when we're in the car.
- 57:38Yeah. Original 100%.
- 57:39Can I just say though right? I agree that this should be on
- 57:45this list mainly for that line. However, she's she's done a
- 57:49Tricky 1 here because in the original picture to burn, so she
- 57:55hasn't redone the album. She changed the lyric on the
- 57:59original song from Tell Your Friends, blah blah blah.
- 58:05Don't worry, I'll tell mine you're gay.
- 58:08She erased that lyric from her whole discography.
- 58:12If she really didn't like the song, if she didn't, if she I
- 58:15think she knows this line slaps. Yeah, because she could have
- 58:19just got rid of her like she did the other one.
- 58:21And on the note of what you've just mentioned about the line
- 58:25that she took about she'll tell people that he's gay, one of the
- 58:28other songs that were sent in was You're So Gay by Katy Perry.
- 58:33You're so gay and you don't even.
- 58:35Like and you don't even like. Can you remember that which?
- 58:38Again, it's very much a time capsule.
- 58:41It was very cheeky and edgy, but actually now it's a reminder of
- 58:44how casually queerness was used as an insult. 100% actually.
- 58:50Like I've had this conversation with people over the years and,
- 58:53and actually using words like, oh, that's so gay.
- 58:56And like, it's so, it's so it's horrible to actually admit.
- 59:00But like, I reckon 5-6 years ago I probably would have still used
- 59:06that as an insult. Like, yeah, on purpose.
- 59:09But like the way that my brain had been programmed from the
- 59:12early, like the late naughties and that and 20.
- 59:14Ten, yeah, 100%. It's it that's gay?
- 59:18Do you know what I mean? Like no, no, no, like.
- 59:21I think though, there are quite a few words like that, like so
- 59:25my friend Gemma, and I know she won't mind me saying this
- 59:28because she's very honest about it.
- 59:30She thinks the word stupid, she hates it because it's a really
- 59:37rubbish way to insult someone. But also she was called stupid
- 59:41her whole childhood because she had dyslexia.
- 59:44Dyslexia, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 59:45And it's the same way, isn't it? Like you don't realise a sort of
- 59:49word when you're that young. I say that young.
- 59:52It's not even that young. Like even like 10 years ago,
- 59:55like I probably would have said that's so stupid.
- 59:57Do you know what I mean? You don't realise how bad it is
- 1:00:00because it doesn't affect you personally.
- 1:00:03Oh yeah, 100%. I think that's why.
- 1:00:05What was I watched something. I've watched something with
- 1:00:08Jack. Oh, it was the Stranger Things
- 1:00:10finale spoiler for If Nobody's Seen it when Will comes out to
- 1:00:16everybody. There was a lot of hate on that
- 1:00:19scene. There was a lot of like, oh, you
- 1:00:21know, he's got everyone together and blower man is really, you
- 1:00:24know, they didn't like how it was done.
- 1:00:26And like, I actually got really emotional watching it.
- 1:00:29And like, I think I, I remember looking over at Jack and I was
- 1:00:32crying and he sort of looked at me like, why are you crying?
- 1:00:35And I said to him after I said, I'm not crying because it's sad.
- 1:00:38I'm crying because I know so many men and.
- 1:00:41Women. I've had to do that.
- 1:00:44And like when you know that that has that what you're actually
- 1:00:48witnessing as being like somebody else's had to live
- 1:00:51through sitting there and saying that to their family and friends
- 1:00:54and feeling that fear that they are going to be completely
- 1:00:56rejected. I had a best friend at school
- 1:00:59whose mum kicked him out when he came out to her and he was like
- 1:01:0217 and she just said get out, you're not living here anymore.
- 1:01:05And that was it. Like he moved out and he never
- 1:01:07moved back in again. Like how mental is that?
- 1:01:10Do you know what I mean? Like it's just but you don't
- 1:01:13think about it because it doesn't apply to you.
- 1:01:15So when it does start to apply to you or you know people close
- 1:01:18to you. 2 of my best friends in. The whole entire world are.
- 1:01:21Gay. I know that both of them had to
- 1:01:23come out to their parents and had to come out to their friends
- 1:01:26and had to go through that. And that's why I think it's it
- 1:01:30plays more on your mind. You know what I mean?
- 1:01:32It's hard. But also along that line with
- 1:01:34Katy Perry, like still on the same subject.
- 1:01:37She had this like ongoing theme though, didn't she?
- 1:01:40Because she had I kissed a girl. Oh yeah.
- 1:01:43Yeah, yeah, she's very queer, toyed with the idea of being.
- 1:01:47Yeah, like, but then she's an advocate for LGBT.
- 1:01:50Yeah, she's an advocate for LGBT rights.
- 1:01:53So it's very strange because she pushes for, you know, like even
- 1:01:58raw, like the the concept of raw and the story behind it and like
- 1:02:04the even the music video a little bit.
- 1:02:05I think they had that sort of like, wasn't there a drag queen
- 1:02:08or something in the music videos?
- 1:02:09I can't remember, but I think the concept of that was was
- 1:02:12pushing those rights forward. So let's just have a quick look
- 1:02:16through the others because we're already quite far into this
- 1:02:19episode. We probably should start
- 1:02:20rounding off 1 less lonely girl Justin Bieber.
- 1:02:23Great song. Definitely had a yeah.
- 1:02:27No notes there. Definitely love this.
- 1:02:30But actually it sounds lovely until you realise that what he's
- 1:02:33actually saying is there's so many lonely girls.
- 1:02:35I'll just pick one. Yeah, but honestly, back then
- 1:02:39I'd have put my hand up. Oh, I'd have been her.
- 1:02:42I'd have been her. And in the staging of it, when
- 1:02:44he performed it live, I saw him live in the O2.
- 1:02:47Bear in mind, I actually sat in the back row of the O2 because I
- 1:02:50didn't have any money. It was absolutely like 18.
- 1:02:52I think that. Was me for Mcbusted the no.
- 1:02:56Busting busting buddy won't fly. He literally would just get
- 1:03:00somebody out of the crowd and put them on stage on a chair and
- 1:03:03then just like dance around them and like sing to them and like
- 1:03:06go to kiss her, but like pull away.
- 1:03:08And it was like very you. Know all start overs and
- 1:03:11shoulders if you cried on. It was very much like, oh, oh,
- 1:03:15can't have me, oh, you're lonely, can't have me.
- 1:03:19I know. It's really weird, but very,
- 1:03:21very strange. Bruno Mars Grenade.
- 1:03:25Great song, but each equally We'll catch a grenade for you.
- 1:03:31Very much a dramatic declaration of love, which is lovely.
- 1:03:34But he's pretty much saying I'd die for you, so why don't you
- 1:03:38love me back? Yeah.
- 1:03:41Just a lot of pressure to put on someone, right?
- 1:03:43Because I got the ick. Yeah, sorry, I got the ick.
- 1:03:48Rihanna, take a bow. Marketed as empowerment.
- 1:03:50You know, she's very much like female strong, but it's actually
- 1:03:54about public humiliation. She literally says I she says go
- 1:03:58on and take a bow. You know, like, what's the
- 1:04:01lyric? And the award for the best liar
- 1:04:05goes to you for making me believe that you could be
- 1:04:09faithful to me. So let's hear your speech.
- 1:04:12And then it's like, hypocrite. Yeah, well, faithful exactly.
- 1:04:18Then wrote a song about cheating on somebody.
- 1:04:20So a bit weird, but it's it's very much I need you to feel bad
- 1:04:24in front of everybody before I can heal from this trauma that
- 1:04:28you've put me through. Which, again, very on brand for
- 1:04:30the naughties. We've talked about Katy Perry.
- 1:04:33Can we talk Usher Confessions Part 2?
- 1:04:38Trying to say this but it's coming from the heart.
- 1:04:40It's been a long time coming. So good, I really want to work
- 1:04:45this out. I know that you.
- 1:04:49Know that he's very aggressive, isn't it?
- 1:04:54I know that, you know. Oh.
- 1:04:56God, he literally is singing about getting another woman
- 1:05:00pregnant. Yeah, like that's that's pretty
- 1:05:02much literally the song is asking for for forgiveness after
- 1:05:06the absolute worst possible timing.
- 1:05:08It's treated as a brave thing because he's confessing, even
- 1:05:11though it comes with 0 plan. As for how anyone else is
- 1:05:14supposed to deal with what he's actually confessing, which is
- 1:05:17that he's knocked one up whilst cheating on somebody else.
- 1:05:20Not OK. Oh dear.
- 1:05:23Let's move to Neo, because I know you've got something that
- 1:05:25you want to talk about with Neo. Yeah, his.
- 1:05:31So I feel like I need to like say that I genuinely growing up
- 1:05:35loved Neo. Yes, I think so sick, so sick.
- 1:05:40Like my anthem. It was so sick.
- 1:05:44I loved it. And I thought the lyrics were.
- 1:05:45At the time, I thought those lyrics were genius.
- 1:05:47When he talks about changing his answering machine.
- 1:05:50Oh, yeah. I was like, oh, cut deep, you've
- 1:05:52cut. Oh, brut.
- 1:05:54Oh, yeah, I get you. Yeah, brut.
- 1:05:56Oh, but sexy love, sexy love. The song I used to sing as a
- 1:06:02child around my. House never knew dancing.
- 1:06:06I don't think I even knew until you brought this up a couple of
- 1:06:08days ago. Yeah.
- 1:06:10She makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up just one
- 1:06:14touch and I erupt like a volcano and I cover her with my love.
- 1:06:22What? Sorry, what?
- 1:06:24Leo, so sick of love songs and now you're bringing this out?
- 1:06:27What? Can I just point out sometimes
- 1:06:29my stepdad listens to this so if he he's listening I'm really
- 1:06:33sorry. But it's not like we were saying
- 1:06:36it's inappropriate. I didn't write the song, just
- 1:06:39looking at the lyrics. Grim.
- 1:06:41Absolutely grim. Sorry, no.
- 1:06:44It's disgusting. I erupt like a volcano.
- 1:06:51Yeah, I mean, I'm not here for it.
- 1:06:52I I think it's very. If this was a video I would put
- 1:06:57like. A male POV like.
- 1:06:58GIF of a volcano erupting over. It sounds like something like,
- 1:07:07yeah, you'd hear in like an erotic novel.
- 1:07:10Do you know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:07:12I erupt like a VOC. Yeah, but still with my love,
- 1:07:16sometimes some of the books I read get a little bit saucy, and
- 1:07:20none of them tell me that they're going to erupt like a
- 1:07:22volcano. No, very true.
- 1:07:24They definitely write it in a nicer way.
- 1:07:27Can we also they? Write it like a female's
- 1:07:29retinit. Well, yeah, true.
- 1:07:31While we're on the the subject of Neo, and this will be our
- 1:07:34last one before we wrap up today, Miss Independent was
- 1:07:39definitely a song that I used to think like girl power and yeah,
- 1:07:44I'm Miss Independent. I've got my thing.
- 1:07:46She got her own thing. Yes, I have.
- 1:07:49Yes, I can pay my own way and I got my own money and La La, La,
- 1:07:53La, which is great. And it's very much like, oh,
- 1:07:56empowering. But there's a subtle undertone
- 1:07:59of like, oh, a woman who can be independent and sexy.
- 1:08:03That's cool. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:08:06It's not like, hum, there's a lot of us that can be
- 1:08:09independent and desirable. It's not like a it's like a wow,
- 1:08:14good for you. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:08:16And I think it's very derogatory in a way that's like it's it's
- 1:08:22it's supposedly a song wise women feel good.
- 1:08:25But actually it's like, bravo, you're independent.
- 1:08:28You're a man. The song.
- 1:08:30Yeah, it's the song version of a man saying sweetie.
- 1:08:34Yeah. Oh, honey.
- 1:08:35Yeah. Oh darling.
- 1:08:36Yeah. Oh, honey, yeah.
- 1:08:37Exactly, exactly. But on the opposite side of
- 1:08:40that. Do you remember Pussycat Dolls?
- 1:08:42I don't need a man to make it happen.
- 1:08:45I get up to, I'm getting to nothing.
- 1:08:47I used to. Love I don't need a ring around
- 1:08:49my. Finger my finger, which is
- 1:08:52female empowerment and you know. Yeah, and the man.
- 1:08:56The opposite way round. And it's not like a oh, good for
- 1:08:59you. It's like, I don't need you.
- 1:09:00It's fine. I can do this on my own.
- 1:09:01There's no like, oh, I'm you're a Dick or you know, you're
- 1:09:04nothing because I'm independent without you.
- 1:09:06It's just I'm independent. I don't need, I don't need a
- 1:09:09man, It's fine. What are the lyrics in the Man?
- 1:09:12The bit that I always remember what Taylor Swift, I say I
- 1:09:15always remember it, but I I've forgotten it completely.
- 1:09:18But there's a lyric it's like about Brad Pitt, and I always
- 1:09:21think there's such a good line. Oh, no, it's not.
- 1:09:25It's about Leonardo. Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 1:09:29Oh. Yeah, it is.
- 1:09:31It just says, what's the, what's the lyric?
- 1:09:34Oh my God, I'm going to find it. Hang on.
- 1:09:37But like, it's such a simple line and it always makes me feel
- 1:09:40like, yes, do you know what I mean?
- 1:09:42Like. Yeah, and they were toasting me.
- 1:09:44Oh, let the players play. I'll be just like Leo.
- 1:09:47Just like Leo. Pay, which is very much Wolf of
- 1:09:52Wall Street. Yes.
- 1:09:54Which is pretty cool. She's saying, you know, she'd be
- 1:09:57the boss because he in Wolf of Wall Street, he's just got women
- 1:10:00everywhere and he's got money and he's throwing cash around.
- 1:10:02And like, that's what she's saying.
- 1:10:03If she was the man. Yeah.
- 1:10:06Very, very interesting. I mean, we probably should wrap
- 1:10:09this up because this is, but we're supposed to be a short
- 1:10:11episode and it's currently at 80 minutes.
- 1:10:16The thing is, none of these songs are unlistenable now.
- 1:10:19A lot of them are still incredible, but they are
- 1:10:22definitely a reminder of how we normalise things like jealousy,
- 1:10:25entitlement, emotional pressure, and how all of that was so
- 1:10:29prominent in pop lyrics. We didn't question it because we
- 1:10:32were just still screaming along and enjoying it.
- 1:10:34Enjoying the. Like Taylor wouldn't leave James
- 1:10:38Bond sitting. There, no, she would not unseen
- 1:10:41him. Let him sit there unseen.
- 1:10:44Sit there unseen too. Poor James.
- 1:10:49Another episode done and dusted. Thank you so much for listening
