- 0:58Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. Well, I am very
- 1:02Speaker 1: excited for our guest because she is a star, an author,
- 1:08Speaker 1: a sister, a daughter, a mother, and a wife. And
- 1:14Speaker 1: she is my friend. We met in 1996 at the Groundlings.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Please welcome Cheryl Hines.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Hello, Heather.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Hello, hello. I have the book.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Looking gorgeous, unscripted. Everybody needs to go right now and
- 1:30Speaker 1: pre-order it because, you guys, it's juicy. It's good. I
- 1:35Speaker 1: unfortunately have only got to page 200 because I just
- 1:38Speaker 1: got it a couple days ago. But, my God, it's great.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Thank you. It's really a good, fun, interesting, juicy read.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Thank you. Yeah, I wanted it to be like I'm
- 1:49Speaker 2: just telling a friend.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 2: This is what's happened. It's crazy. And it is so crazy.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And, you know, for people that don't really know your life.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So, you know, you came from just a really close-knit family,
- 2:05Speaker 1: middle class.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:06Speaker 1: From what part of Florida? Tallahassee, Orlando.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And then you eventually went to college and made your
- 2:13Speaker 1: way to L.A. Yeah. We met. At the Groundlings. And
- 2:18Speaker 1: I was trying to remember. I think I was in
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Sunday show already for like six months. And then
- 2:23Speaker 1: I think you were in it.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I think that's right.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And we were in it for about a year together.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And then I did not go on past 18 months.
- 2:31Speaker 1: But you became a regular member, right?
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Okay. Good for you. Well, look at where we are now.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:36Speaker 2: So.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But we wrote a lot together. No, we did.
- 2:41Speaker 2: You used to make me laugh. Yeah, because you were
- 2:44Speaker 2: already in and you knew the ropes. And then. We
- 2:47Speaker 2: would say, you know, you want to write together and
- 2:50Speaker 2: you would say, I need you to show up with
- 2:52Speaker 2: three good ideas.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Did I really say that?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And I was like, Jesus.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Well, I'm doing my best.
- 2:58Speaker 1: You know what? That's so funny. Like how different.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Okay.
- 3:00Speaker 1: This is going to be a fun episode because there's
- 3:02Speaker 1: probably going to be a lot of different memories that
- 3:05Speaker 1: maybe match up and maybe don't. Because for me, I
- 3:11Speaker 1: love funny people, but I am a shallow bitch and
- 3:14Speaker 1: I like a pretty friend. And I saw you walk in,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and I'm like, now that's a girl I could hang
- 3:20Speaker 1: outside of this dorky theater with. Like, I'm like, this
- 3:24Speaker 1: girl can go to some fun spots with me. And
- 3:28Speaker 1: we did. She is pretty enough to hang. Oh, my gosh,
- 3:32Speaker 1: we did. We did.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. Now that you're saying this, memories are
- 3:37Speaker 2: coming back.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Okay, go ahead. So I was like, do you want
- 3:39Speaker 1: to go to the Sky Bar with me? What is
- 3:42Speaker 1: that hotel now? Is that the Mondrian still?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But Cindy Crawford's husband, before they were married, Gerber, he
- 3:52Speaker 1: owned it. And it was just a hotspot because you
- 3:55Speaker 1: were outside and it was on sunset.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It was beautiful and overlooks the city. And it was
- 4:01Speaker 2: really the place.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And it was very hard to get in, but I
- 4:03Speaker 1: had figured out a way to get in, to which
- 4:05Speaker 1: I would call this number with an English accent. And
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'd say, hello, I'm calling. I've got a few girls
- 4:12Speaker 1: coming in from New York from the Ford Modeling Agency
- 4:14Speaker 1: that would like to enjoy the Sky Bar. Can I
- 4:16Speaker 1: put their names down? And then I'd put our real
- 4:18Speaker 1: names down because you have to show IDs, whatever. And
- 4:21Speaker 1: so I picked you up and you were living with,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you talk about your fun foursome of friends.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Your two gay best friends, Paul and Eric. Eddie. Eddie, sorry, sorry.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Paul and Eddie and then also your two roommates that
- 4:37Speaker 1: you got a couple years into struggling in LA.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And you come out and you go, can I I
- 4:45Speaker 1: think you said, can I bring them both or something?
- 4:47Speaker 1: And I was like, no, because I did this weird
- 4:50Speaker 1: fake thing and I only have the certain names or whatever.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And I am telling you throughout the last, so that
- 4:58Speaker 1: would have been 1996. So almost 30 years. It's haunted
- 5:04Speaker 1: me that that was so mean. Because I remember you
- 5:08Speaker 1: ran out and you're like, oh God, really? And I
- 5:11Speaker 1: was like, Yeah. And I was always like, God, she
- 5:14Speaker 1: was so nice. I wonder if she ever just like
- 5:15Speaker 1: thought that that was super bitchy of me.
- 5:19Speaker 2: You know, I don't remember that at all.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Good. See, that's what I'm saying. That's so many times
- 5:23Speaker 1: people like as you get older, you know, and it's why,
- 5:25Speaker 1: you know. You've got to give some people some grace. Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Because you're like, no, I was not even thinking of that.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But I'm good. I'm glad.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Because then I saw one of the girls when you
- 5:34Speaker 1: came to Chelsea and she's still working with you. Maria.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And she was such a delight.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 1: She could have come to the Sky Bar. It wouldn't
- 5:40Speaker 1: have mattered. Well, you know, she probably.
- 5:43Speaker 2: You're right, though, because at that time you really did.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Your name had to be on the list.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And they were not letting people in. Yeah. And, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: I didn't know how the whole system worked. And you
- 5:54Speaker 2: were like, no. You got to do this. And I said, okay.
- 5:57Speaker 2: But they were fine with it, too. They were like, oh, okay.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And then do you remember we met some two guys
- 6:01Speaker 1: and ended up back in their hotel room?
- 6:03Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:04Speaker 1: But we did escape with clothes on. Nothing too much happened.
- 6:07Speaker 1: What was it? Some guy, you were like, I have
- 6:09Speaker 1: to get out of here. Was it a guy sucking
- 6:11Speaker 1: your toe or something?
- 6:12Speaker 2: I think he did want, he did want, yeah, he
- 6:16Speaker 2: was doing something odd. And I was like, this is,
- 6:17Speaker 2: this can't be a good Saturday night.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I need to go home.
- 6:23Speaker 2: But we got there together. So I remember one time
- 6:27Speaker 2: when we were at the Sky Bar and these guys
- 6:30Speaker 2: ordered a bottle of Dom Perignon.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Oh, yes.
- 6:34Speaker 2: That's good. And I was chewing gum. And you put
- 6:36Speaker 2: your hand out and you were like, spit out your gum.
- 6:38Speaker 2: You are not chewing that and drinking the champagne at
- 6:41Speaker 2: the same time. And I was like, okay.
- 6:45Speaker 1: See, like that type of stuff, I don't remember. But
- 6:47Speaker 1: I remember us doing some funny, really funny sketches. And
- 6:52Speaker 1: you sent me one of, like, remember this on a DM.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And it was, we decided, we did a sketch that
- 6:59Speaker 1: our job was to test deodorant. We had to smell
- 7:02Speaker 1: people's armpits. Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And then, yeah, just, I mean, I don't know
- 7:06Speaker 2: how long ago, pretty recently, I came across an article
- 7:09Speaker 2: where there were women, you know, smelling people's armpits. And
- 7:13Speaker 2: I sent it to you. I was like, Heather, this
- 7:14Speaker 2: was us. And then we had the guys... You know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: when we did the sketch, they were so sweaty in, like,
- 7:21Speaker 2: tank tops. And we would go, oh, actually, I'm smelling
- 7:25Speaker 2: some aluminum.
- 7:27Speaker 1: A little bit of lavender.
- 7:29Speaker 2: You know, we were very serious about it. It just
- 7:31Speaker 2: really made me laugh.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. So, I mean, what's great is you
- 7:37Speaker 1: share those struggling times. And one of the articles in
- 7:42Speaker 1: your book is that you dated a non-theater entertainment person
- 7:47Speaker 1: for quite a while.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 1: The investment banker while you were the struggling bartender.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I find that story to be so interesting because there's
- 7:57Speaker 1: that moment where you're kind of like, oh, what if
- 8:00Speaker 1: he hadn't cheated?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 1: And what if I had married him?
- 8:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Would I have been satisfied just being a wife and
- 8:06Speaker 1: mother and living in the suburbs and doing the country
- 8:09Speaker 1: club life?
- 8:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Like, that's so interesting because I've thought about similar things
- 8:14Speaker 1: like that.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I know. I think about that because I
- 8:17Speaker 2: was so in love with him at the time. And he,
- 8:20Speaker 2: you know, was... I want to say normal. But, you know,
- 8:24Speaker 2: when you're in this industry, everybody is a little crazy.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And if they're not, then they're not going to make
- 8:31Speaker 2: it because it's a crazy industry.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So but he would he would always, like I said
- 8:35Speaker 2: in the book, we would drive by Starbucks and it
- 8:38Speaker 2: would drive him crazy that people are just sitting out
- 8:41Speaker 2: there drinking coffee at two in the afternoon. He's like,
- 8:44Speaker 2: does anybody in this town have a job? They are
- 8:49Speaker 2: trying to get one, but they're just having a latte
- 8:51Speaker 2: while they're figuring it out.
- 8:53Speaker 1: But he used to drive him crazy. I used to
- 8:56Speaker 1: love to go there. And when you'd have the scripts,
- 8:59Speaker 1: paper script that someone would send, you know, the agents
- 9:02Speaker 1: would actually have a runner drop it off at your apartment.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And then I could go to Starbucks on Montana in
- 9:07Speaker 1: Santa Monica and look like I had some major shit
- 9:09Speaker 1: going on.
- 9:10Speaker 2: You'd open your scripts.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Highlight. Those were the days.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Simpler times.
- 9:17Speaker 1: But with that guy, I was like, wait a minute.
- 9:19Speaker 1: As we were getting to the book, I'm like, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: feel like you might have left out a juicier part.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Or is that a different point? Was there a story
- 9:26Speaker 1: where you found a used condom?
- 9:30Speaker 2: That's him.
- 9:31Speaker 1: It was.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I didn't put that part in my book because I thought,
- 9:35Speaker 2: I don't know if people want to hear about a
- 9:36Speaker 2: used condom.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we do. Because I want to say, didn't you
- 9:40Speaker 1: do something kind of like badass about it?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Well, I, you know, I had a key to his apartment.
- 9:47Speaker 2: He had a key to my apartment. I was going
- 9:49Speaker 2: to go see him. We decided we should take one
- 9:52Speaker 2: night off because we were together too much. So you
- 9:55Speaker 2: go out with your friends, I'll go out with my friends.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And then when I went over to his apartment the
- 9:59Speaker 2: next Sunday he wasn't there but as soon as I
- 10:02Speaker 2: walked in I I was like whoa something feels weird
- 10:07Speaker 2: here something weird has happened here and I called one
- 10:10Speaker 2: of my friends and I said I think uh Charlie
- 10:14Speaker 2: um cheated and And she said, why would you even
- 10:17Speaker 2: think that? I go, I don't even know. I just
- 10:19Speaker 2: feel it. I feel it in this apartment. And she said, well,
- 10:22Speaker 2: when he comes back, just say, is there anything you
- 10:25Speaker 2: want to tell me? And I said, okay, that's good.
- 10:27Speaker 2: That's good. And then I took a shower. And then
- 10:31Speaker 2: when I turned my hair over to put a towel
- 10:33Speaker 2: on my wet hair, I could see in his trash
- 10:35Speaker 2: can a used condom. And I called her and I said, okay,
- 10:40Speaker 2: I know he cheated. I was really devastated. But I
- 10:46Speaker 2: packed all of my stuff. I put it in my
- 10:49Speaker 2: car and just waited. And, you know, he's a golfer.
- 10:54Speaker 2: And I remember he had like a, I don't know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: three iron or something by his fireplace. And he had
- 11:01Speaker 2: this huge window that overlooked the beach. And I just
- 11:06Speaker 2: sat there.
- 11:07Speaker 1: That's a sad place to leave when you get into
- 11:09Speaker 1: a little crappy car with– Were you in the growlings
- 11:12Speaker 1: at that point? Did you have wigs in the backyard?
- 11:13Speaker 2: No.
- 11:14Speaker 1: The thing about the growlings is it's a lot of wigs.
- 11:16Speaker 1: A lot of wigs. A lot of wigs. There's always
- 11:18Speaker 1: like five wigs and like a G-string in my back,
- 11:20Speaker 1: like in a weird outfit. Wig caps. Yeah, your car
- 11:23Speaker 1: was like a giant dirty purse.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Anyway, it was a red Toyota Tercel, but I had
- 11:29Speaker 2: no air conditioning.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I had a red Celica. Okay, continue.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But I kept looking at that window and I was like.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I wish I was one of those people that would just...
- 11:39Speaker 2: I really wanted to smash his friggin' picture window. But then,
- 11:44Speaker 2: you know, I kept.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I know that you didn't. I know, because... Because that
- 11:47Speaker 1: would have made the news during the... During now?
- 11:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 1: What a crazy bitch you are. I know.
- 11:55Speaker 2: But it was like, oh, I see how people... I
- 11:57Speaker 2: see how, like, somebody could just be so hopped up
- 12:00Speaker 2: on adrenaline to do something like that. But then I thought... Well,
- 12:04Speaker 2: then he'll have a shattered window. And then how is
- 12:06Speaker 2: he going to fix it? And that's a lot of money. And,
- 12:08Speaker 2: you know, that's what I'm thinking about while I'm waiting
- 12:10Speaker 2: for him to come back.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And then, you know, and then I said, do you
- 12:13Speaker 2: want to tell me anything about last night? He's like, no.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I said, oh, really? Did nothing interesting happen?
- 12:21Speaker 1: No.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Really?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Because I'm pretty sure you had sex with someone else.
- 12:28Speaker 2: He was like, no, I didn't. I said, well, I'm
- 12:33Speaker 2: going to stop talking to you if you're not going
- 12:35Speaker 2: to be truthful because there's no point in this conversation.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I will just leave. And, you know, at that point, like,
- 12:43Speaker 2: you know, the cabinets were open and the drawers were
- 12:46Speaker 2: open because I was so mad when I packed all
- 12:48Speaker 2: my stuff. And he's looking around like, I don't know
- 12:52Speaker 2: what's going on. I know.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Huh?
- 12:55Speaker 2: It's your period. Yeah.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It's your period. This must be you. How long you'd
- 13:00Speaker 1: been dating him at this point?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Two years.
- 13:02Speaker 1: That's very significant.
- 13:03Speaker 2: He had moved from New York.
- 13:06Speaker 1: To be.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 1: To be together. That's very significant.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And you're at the age where marriage is probably pending.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I was 29. Yeah. And I said.
- 13:19Speaker 2: And I said, well, okay, well, let's just cut to
- 13:21Speaker 2: the chase. You clearly had sex with someone last night.
- 13:26Speaker 2: He's like, why would you say that? Because of the
- 13:31Speaker 2: used condom that I can see in your trash. And
- 13:33Speaker 2: he was like, that's my roommate's. I was like, okay.
- 13:38Speaker 2: So your roommate had sex with somebody, then walked into
- 13:43Speaker 2: your bathroom that you have to go through your bedroom
- 13:45Speaker 2: to get to your bathroom to take off his condom.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Something is not tracking. And that I, you know, I
- 13:55Speaker 2: guess he did finally admit it. And I just left.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And I said, I never want to see you again.
- 14:04Speaker 2: That I talk about in the book that.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it was hard, really hard.
- 14:07Speaker 2: It was so hard. It was sad. That I talk about,
- 14:12Speaker 2: I was working at that hotel. And one of the
- 14:17Speaker 2: security guards. It was this giant 300-pound guy who was
- 14:21Speaker 2: very sweet to me. And he, you know, he's walking
- 14:25Speaker 2: me to my car and he said, you know, what's
- 14:26Speaker 2: going on? You seem so sad. And I said, yeah,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I broke up with my boyfriend. He asked me what
- 14:32Speaker 2: happened and I told him and he said, I could
- 14:36Speaker 2: take him out. I was like, what do you mean
- 14:38Speaker 2: take him out? He said, yeah, I know a guy
- 14:41Speaker 2: that could take him out. And he was dead serious.
- 14:44Speaker 2: 100% dead serious. And I said, oh.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Your life really could have gone so many different ways.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I said.
- 14:51Speaker 1: That's what's fun about the book. Like literally, if you
- 14:53Speaker 1: would have been like, you know what? Yeah.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Fuck him. Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Now I'm like, Cheryl, it's me, Heather. Tap on the phone.
- 15:00Speaker 1: This is where we're doing the interviews now. There's a glass.
- 15:02Speaker 2: We're putting our hands up to touch each other.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you're still doing, you know, your 30 years.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yeah. And then I said, no, I definitely do not
- 15:10Speaker 2: want you to do that. But thank you. And he said, okay,
- 15:13Speaker 2: where does he work? And tell me his full name.
- 15:16Speaker 2: And I said, why? He said, because I'll just wait
- 15:18Speaker 2: for him in the parking lot and take out his
- 15:20Speaker 2: knee with a crowbar. I was like, my God, that
- 15:24Speaker 2: is so nice of you. But I'm going to say no.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I will never tell you his name or where he works.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's amazing. The other fun, there's so many fun stories,
- 15:34Speaker 1: but the other things of things that I didn't know
- 15:37Speaker 1: was the $ 2, 000 pyramid scheme.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Do you remember that time in L.A.? Yes, I do,
- 15:42Speaker 1: because actually my husband, when we watched a documentary in
- 15:47Speaker 1: the last few years that was about the beach thing
- 15:50Speaker 1: where this woman was murdered, they didn't know if it
- 15:53Speaker 1: was her estranged husband or if it was someone pissed
- 15:55Speaker 1: about that pyramid thing.
- 15:57Speaker 2: The pyramid scheme.
- 15:58Speaker 1: It was a pyramid scheme where, in a nutshell, you
- 16:01Speaker 1: put in $ 2, 000 and then you get other people to
- 16:04Speaker 1: and other people to... And then eventually you can walk
- 16:06Speaker 1: away with like $ 60, 000. But just like any pyramid scheme,
- 16:10Speaker 1: whether you're selling clothing or whatever, when everybody in the
- 16:13Speaker 1: neighborhood has done it, there's no fresh meat. And then
- 16:17Speaker 1: the people at the bottom are just out two grand.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And they don't have new people, but they don't have
- 16:24Speaker 1: wealthy enough people to tap into. They don't have the
- 16:27Speaker 1: relatives and all that stuff. So, I mean, yeah. And
- 16:30Speaker 1: so your friends did well with it. Yes.
- 16:33Speaker 2: They went through a few times, Paul and Eddie. And
- 16:36Speaker 2: I was so, this was after, you know, cheating Charlie.
- 16:39Speaker 2: And I was so down, so down. I was just like,
- 16:44Speaker 2: I had no joy in my life. I was at
- 16:47Speaker 2: my sister, Becky, who was still, you know, is in Florida.
- 16:51Speaker 2: She was talking to me. And the only time I
- 16:53Speaker 2: would sort of come alive is when I would talk
- 16:55Speaker 2: about the pyramid scheme. Because I was watching them and
- 16:59Speaker 2: it was so exciting. I mean, people would dress up.
- 17:03Speaker 1: They go to— Yeah, the dinner, like a house dinner party, right?
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like a warehouse.
- 17:07Speaker 1: It was a warehouse.
- 17:08Speaker 2: I mean, I think there were different versions of it, right? Right.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Depending on your pyramid.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:14Speaker 2: If you had a classy one or not.
- 17:15Speaker 1: And— I think Peter, my husband, was approached at Q's.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Remember Q's, the pool hall on Wilshire? Did he do it?
- 17:24Speaker 1: If he did, it was one of those things where
- 17:26Speaker 1: it was very little money, and he realized, like, this
- 17:29Speaker 1: is wrong and this is a scheme. But he knew—
- 17:31Speaker 1: like a couple guys that it was getting scary. Like
- 17:34Speaker 1: they're scamming with, and he was just like, I don't
- 17:36Speaker 1: want to be part of this.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:37Speaker 1: But this was before I knew him.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I mean, you figure anything that's called a
- 17:43Speaker 2: pyramid scheme.
- 17:45Speaker 1: They weren't even trying to call it something else.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I mean, like, I don't remember any other name for it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It wasn't like, you know, the group or something.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah. And so I, So my sister, who had no money,
- 18:01Speaker 2: she had no money. To this day, I don't know
- 18:03Speaker 2: how she got $ 2, 000 in cash. But she did. And
- 18:06Speaker 2: she sent it to me. And I was so excited.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Dressed up. Paul and Eddie took me to the party. And,
- 18:15Speaker 2: you know, it was, it was, you would tap somebody
- 18:18Speaker 2: on the shoulder. And then you go into a little
- 18:21Speaker 2: private part of the room and you give them the $ 200, 000 cash.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I mean, $ 200, 000. $ 2, 000. And and then that would get
- 18:30Speaker 2: you started on your pyramid scheme. But then mine stalled
- 18:36Speaker 2: because I was not good at it. I'm not, you know,
- 18:38Speaker 2: people be like, well, should I borrow money from my mom?
- 18:42Speaker 2: And I'd say, no, Jesus, no.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But that's what you're supposed to do if you want
- 18:47Speaker 1: to be successful at this. Right, that's what you're supposed
- 18:48Speaker 1: to do. You have to just like a sign tells
- 18:49Speaker 1: you whatever, max out every credit card, do whatever it
- 18:52Speaker 1: takes because in the end it's all going to work out.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Yeah. I didn't have a good hustle.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I was just like, no, it's not going to end well.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You definitely shouldn't do this.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And even Paul and Eddie said, yeah, we're not going
- 19:03Speaker 2: to join your pyramid. You're terrible at this.
- 19:06Speaker 1: We've got our own thing going. Yeah. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 19:10Speaker 1: So then that was before the Groundlings. Before you got
- 19:14Speaker 1: to the performing part of the Groundlings. And then I
- 19:19Speaker 1: remember when, you know, this is, we were friends before
- 19:23Speaker 1: there was Instagram and Facebook and all that stuff. So
- 19:26Speaker 1: we were like on the phone talking friends.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:29Speaker 1: And it would be so stressful when you'd find out
- 19:32Speaker 1: how many scenes you were going to be in on Sunday.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And then we'd all like bitch and complain about it
- 19:37Speaker 1: and talk about like, why did that one get in?
- 19:39Speaker 1: And who's da-da-da-da-da. And one of the things was, and
- 19:43Speaker 1: you've talked about it in the book, that really it
- 19:45Speaker 1: was such a great showcase. And, you know, back in
- 19:49Speaker 1: those days, days, people, we didn't, we couldn't just do
- 19:51Speaker 1: really great TikToks or send a video of us doing
- 19:55Speaker 1: standup to an agent.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Like they had to be there. They had to be there.
- 19:59Speaker 2: They had to see you in person.
- 19:59Speaker 1: They had to come on, you know, a Sunday at
- 20:02Speaker 1: five o'clock. And so there'd be times where they'd be like,
- 20:05Speaker 1: oh my gosh, you know. I've got an agent coming
- 20:09Speaker 1: and you were like, babe, can I get one more bit?
- 20:11Speaker 2: You know, cause it'd be like 18 scenes.
- 20:13Speaker 1: And then other people would be like, well, I want
- 20:16Speaker 1: to shine. And maybe that agent would pick me. And
- 20:21Speaker 1: that did happen to me, but it was in standup.
- 20:24Speaker 1: In standup, I paid $ 64 for every, all these agents
- 20:28Speaker 1: to come. It was like the final thing, if they
- 20:30Speaker 1: were going to sign me or not. And right before
- 20:35Speaker 1: I went on was this, really funny guy. He was
- 20:37Speaker 1: a friend of mine and he did well. And so
- 20:39Speaker 1: right after he went on, they called him over to
- 20:42Speaker 1: sit at the booth and talk to him the whole
- 20:44Speaker 1: time while I was on stage. And then they signed him.
- 20:47Speaker 2: That's so awful.
- 20:48Speaker 1: There were just so many stories like that, but you
- 20:50Speaker 1: had a successful story because you were on stage doing
- 20:54Speaker 1: a really funny bit that you also wrote.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:56Speaker 1: And the casting person saw you that was looking to
- 20:59Speaker 1: cast the wife of Larry David.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And that was amazing. And that was just, what people
- 21:05Speaker 1: don't know, that was just like a one hour like
- 21:07Speaker 1: special to kind of.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Right. Curb Your Enthusiasm started out, yeah, as a one
- 21:12Speaker 2: hour special, like a standup doing a one hour special
- 21:16Speaker 2: of standup.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Now I remember that was so funny where he says
- 21:19Speaker 1: he's going to do it. And then the whole thing
- 21:22Speaker 1: was at the end, he's like, what the fuck am
- 21:24Speaker 1: I doing?
- 21:24Speaker 2: I don't have an act.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I'm not doing this. It was so, to me as
- 21:27Speaker 1: a standup, I thought it was the most brilliant, funny thing.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And then to see you in it, And I remember
- 21:33Speaker 1: I called you. Like, I remember where I was when
- 21:35Speaker 1: I called you, and I was like, oh, my God, congratulations.
- 21:37Speaker 1: You were so great in that. And I remember you
- 21:39Speaker 1: were like, and I go, and this is tacky. I
- 21:42Speaker 1: don't know if I asked you or if you told me,
- 21:44Speaker 1: but you told me what you got paid.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I got nothing. I don't even remember what I got.
- 21:48Speaker 1: You do? Can I just say it?
- 21:50Speaker 2: I don't see why not. $ 7, 000.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, okay.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Yeah. That sounds right.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Because I remember I go, oh, that's how much they're
- 21:57Speaker 1: getting at SNL per week. Really? Oh, I didn't know that.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I knew how much they were.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Getting first year was $ 7, 000 a week. I like remember
- 22:03Speaker 1: weird stuff. So anyway, and then I think you told
- 22:06Speaker 1: me then, but here's the secret, Heather, they're going to
- 22:09Speaker 1: make it a series.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 1: That's so exciting.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Yeah, because when I did that, when I was special,
- 22:17Speaker 2: I asked my agent, I said, is it possible that
- 22:19Speaker 2: this would turn into a show? And he's like, no.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I said, okay, that's fair. And then when I was
- 22:28Speaker 2: at the Groundlings, somebody, and I don't remember who, You know,
- 22:33Speaker 2: a writer or a producer or somebody came up and said, oh, yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 2: I hear they're going to make it into a series.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I said, oh, that's great. I haven't heard that. Nobody's
- 22:42Speaker 2: told me. So I'm just waiting, waiting, you know, for
- 22:45Speaker 2: the call.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Always waiting for the call.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And so he calls you and he says, OK, it's
- 22:50Speaker 1: going to be made into a series. And obviously you're thrilled.
- 22:52Speaker 1: That is all of our dreams. It's your dream. All
- 22:55Speaker 1: of our dreams was to get a television series.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:58Speaker 1: That you had a place to go.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 1: That you had a regular paycheck.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 1: And that you could do your thing.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:04Speaker 1: That's all we ever wanted in that 99 person. That's
- 23:06Speaker 1: the dream.
- 23:07Speaker 2: That is the dream.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Only 99 people could even sit in that place. And
- 23:10Speaker 1: there was 18 of us in Sunday Show. We couldn't
- 23:12Speaker 1: sell it out.
- 23:17Speaker 2: It's like your friends were like, I saw it last
- 23:19Speaker 2: week and the week before. Can I have a break?
- 23:21Speaker 3: No.
- 23:21Speaker 1: But I would go to the show. I went to
- 23:23Speaker 1: the Sky Bar one night, I don't know if you're
- 23:25Speaker 1: with me or not, and I met Vince Vaughn.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I remember.
- 23:28Speaker 1: And he did come.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I know.
- 23:30Speaker 1: And I couldn't believe he was there. I was like, yeah, come.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And he was like really interested in it because he
- 23:33Speaker 1: was obviously into comedy. And then all of a sudden
- 23:36Speaker 1: we're in between scenes and I'm backstage and one of
- 23:39Speaker 1: the main company members comes in the back where our
- 23:42Speaker 1: green room is or whatever, our dressing room. And he's like, oh,
- 23:45Speaker 1: that guy from Swingers is upstairs.
- 23:46Speaker 4: I'm like.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Oh, you didn't know he was going to be there?
- 23:49Speaker 1: I just... Yeah, I didn't know that he would come.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Put it out there.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I called... I mean, I gave him... I said I'm
- 23:54Speaker 1: going to be there, whatever, tomorrow night.
- 23:57Speaker 4: And.
- 23:58Speaker 1: And then we went on a few dates and made
- 24:01Speaker 1: out with them and stuff.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I remember that from your book. I remember that from
- 24:05Speaker 2: reading my book. I loved your book.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I love reading all of my friends' books. I can't
- 24:10Speaker 1: imagine a friend, even if you're not close, writing a
- 24:13Speaker 1: book and you don't bother to read it. How are
- 24:15Speaker 1: you not so fucking curious? Oh, my God.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Heather, when you wrote about the marching band... The marching
- 24:22Speaker 2: band uniform in the closet and you... freaked out because
- 24:26Speaker 2: you were like, you were in the marching band.
- 24:28Speaker 1: A guy I was dating, yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 2: That made me laugh so hard. I was like, only
- 24:32Speaker 2: Heather is mad that he was in the marching band
- 24:35Speaker 2: because it's not cool.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And he didn't tell you.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Like, you didn't even have a chance to reject him
- 24:41Speaker 2: on that.
- 24:42Speaker 1: On that alone.
- 24:43Speaker 2: You were in too deep by the time you learned it.
- 24:46Speaker 2: It was like, ah. I didn't even get to tell
- 24:49Speaker 2: you no because you were in the marching band.
- 24:53Speaker 1: And so, I mean, Caribbean Thieves, that was such a
- 24:55Speaker 1: great show. And also, I want to say, not to
- 25:00Speaker 1: belittle the work of it, but what a great, honestly,
- 25:05Speaker 1: easy job in that you are improv-ing. You're not memorizing
- 25:10Speaker 1: your lines. You're not doing a million takes. Like when
- 25:13Speaker 1: I guest starred on Reno 911, I felt the same way.
- 25:15Speaker 1: And then when we did After Lately, which was modeled
- 25:18Speaker 1: kind of after Reno 911 Curb of like, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 1: or The Office, well, The Office is scripted, but more
- 25:24Speaker 1: like Curb. Was, yeah, you do it a few times
- 25:27Speaker 1: and that's it. I know. And you can improv and,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I mean.
- 25:31Speaker 2: How fun. No, Susie Essman and I used to always
- 25:35Speaker 2: look at each other and say, oh, my God, this
- 25:37Speaker 2: is the best job anybody could ever have. No lines
- 25:42Speaker 2: to memorize. I mean, yeah, usually when you're working, you
- 25:46Speaker 2: have really early calls.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And you're up all night just like, got to get
- 25:50Speaker 2: these lines down. I mean, even, you know, I remember–
- 25:55Speaker 2: A lot of time just sitting in traffic, just going
- 25:57Speaker 2: over my lines, going over my lines. But yes, Curb
- 26:00Speaker 2: was all improvised. So even for the first three seasons,
- 26:04Speaker 2: I didn't get to look at the story outlines. Larry
- 26:08Speaker 2: would write a three to five page story outline, but
- 26:12Speaker 2: he didn't want me to see them. So I would,
- 26:15Speaker 2: when I would get to work, I would say, can
- 26:17Speaker 2: anybody tell me what this show is about? And they'd say, no,
- 26:20Speaker 2: you'll find out. Larry will tell you what he wants
- 26:24Speaker 2: you to know. Like, OK.
- 26:26Speaker 1: And then in it, you know, you guys get divorced.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:30Speaker 1: And I was that because in his real life he
- 26:33Speaker 1: got divorced. Like, why did that divorce happen?
- 26:36Speaker 2: I think he you know, he told me that he
- 26:39Speaker 2: wanted to do stories about dating.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 26:42Speaker 2: So, yeah, I remember that call, too, because he called me.
- 26:46Speaker 2: He's like, well, you know, I've got some good news
- 26:49Speaker 2: and bad news, mostly bad news for you. I was like, great.
- 26:54Speaker 2: He said, you know, we are going to do another season,
- 26:56Speaker 2: but you're not going to be in it. At all?
- 26:58Speaker 1: So you weren't in that season at all?
- 26:59Speaker 2: No, there was one season I wasn't in when they
- 27:02Speaker 2: went to New York. And I said, okay. You know,
- 27:06Speaker 2: I mean, I was doing... I was doing other things.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you were getting... You got a bunch of movies.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I did movies. I did.
- 27:13Speaker 1: You did RV.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yeah, RV.
- 27:15Speaker 1: You did.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Waitress.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you were getting a lot. Now, were those movies,
- 27:21Speaker 1: because now you're an established name, were they being offered
- 27:24Speaker 1: and do you still have to read and audition?
- 27:27Speaker 2: They were being offered. But I had to meet, you know,
- 27:30Speaker 2: meet and talk to the director to see if.
- 27:34Speaker 2: And, you know, you have to talk about the script and...
- 27:37Speaker 2: knowledgeable way.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:38Speaker 2: You know, talk about how you see your character. But
- 27:43Speaker 2: completely different, right, than auditioning is so hard, isn't it?
- 27:48Speaker 1: I'm a horrible auditioner. I one time heard that people
- 27:50Speaker 1: were doing beta blockers. So their nerves would like, I'd
- 27:54Speaker 1: get so like, and it's so much about like getting ready,
- 27:57Speaker 1: driving over there. And like, I really didn't totally memorize.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And I, because I, some acting teacher told me not to. Wrong. Wrong.
- 28:06Speaker 1: memorize it, know it inside and out.
- 28:08Speaker 2: And you can still hold the script, but.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 2: But you memorize it.
- 28:12Speaker 1: It's so much better, yeah. And so, and then like
- 28:15Speaker 1: when you'd see your friends in the waiting room, and
- 28:19Speaker 1: I always remember being like, oh, isn't that nice that
- 28:22Speaker 1: those two girls are so like classy and they realize like,
- 28:24Speaker 1: it's not my part. If you get it, it's not
- 28:27Speaker 1: in God's plan. Because I'm like, fuck.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I want it.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Or when the casting director would come out and hug me.
- 28:34Speaker 1: The girl. One of them. They know each other. Only
- 28:36Speaker 1: one of them. They go way back and they're laughing
- 28:38Speaker 1: and they're like, I'm coming to your birthday on Saturday.
- 28:40Speaker 2: No, you're not.
- 28:41Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, fuck. I know.
- 28:44Speaker 2: No, I remember Jennifer Coolidge. We were both auditioning for,
- 28:47Speaker 2: that's how long ago it was, right? What was it?
- 28:51Speaker 2: Something Around the Sun.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Oh, with the aliens?
- 28:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah, with Kristen.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I can't remember the name. Third Rock from
- 29:00Speaker 2: the Sun. Third Rock from the Sun, yeah. So it
- 29:03Speaker 2: was a guest role. Yeah, it was a guest role.
- 29:06Speaker 2: And when I got there, I see Jennifer Coolidge, who's amazing, right?
- 29:10Speaker 2: And she's literally clipping in hair extensions while she's talking
- 29:17Speaker 2: to me before she goes in. And she said, what
- 29:20Speaker 2: is going on here? I said, what do you mean?
- 29:22Speaker 2: She goes, oh, all the girls are just like looking
- 29:25Speaker 2: at their scripts. And I said, well, you know, it's
- 29:28Speaker 2: an audition. A lot of people are Want to get
- 29:31Speaker 2: their line. She's like, I guess I should have. Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 2: maybe I should have memorized it or something. And she
- 29:39Speaker 2: went in. And she's still clipping in her. She doesn't
- 29:44Speaker 2: seem to have a care in the world, right?
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:46Speaker 2: She goes in and it was on the other side
- 29:49Speaker 2: of the door. So you could hear if they laughed,
- 29:51Speaker 2: you could hear it. But you couldn't hear what they
- 29:53Speaker 2: were saying, but you could hear if they laughed. She
- 29:55Speaker 2: went in. It seemed like they laughed from inside. the
- 29:59Speaker 2: moment she went to the moment she left and the
- 30:01Speaker 2: rest of us are looking at each other. Like, are you,
- 30:04Speaker 2: do you have the same? We all have the same scripters.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Hers just really funny. And, um, she got the part. Um,
- 30:11Speaker 2: and then later when I saw her at the groundlings,
- 30:14Speaker 2: I said, what was your take on, on the script?
- 30:18Speaker 2: Because they were laughing so hard and I did not,
- 30:23Speaker 2: you know, it wasn't that didn't seem that funny. She said,
- 30:28Speaker 2: She said, well, when I went in, they said, oh,
- 30:32Speaker 2: we've been dying to work with you for 10 years.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And I said, you can go fuck yourselves. You've had
- 30:38Speaker 2: 10 years to call me. And she said they laughed
- 30:41Speaker 2: and laughed and she got the part. But she's also
- 30:46Speaker 2: really good.
- 30:46Speaker 1: But I also had such an anxiety about like thinking
- 30:49Speaker 1: that if I did anything wrong, it would ruin it.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I know.
- 30:52Speaker 1: It would ruin it. And I'm like, and then I
- 30:54Speaker 1: realized later on, and I always tell people this with
- 30:56Speaker 1: advice or whatever, I'm like, Just know that if you
- 30:59Speaker 1: go out for any kind of job, acting, whatever, any
- 31:03Speaker 1: kind of date, the other person wants it to be you. Yeah.
- 31:07Speaker 1: They don't want to continue the search. That's not fun.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 31:10Speaker 2: That is important to remember.
- 31:11Speaker 1: And I think so many times people walk in thinking
- 31:13Speaker 1: the world is against them somehow.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and the casting director. Or like you're saying, if
- 31:17Speaker 2: you're going to interview for a job, they want you
- 31:20Speaker 2: to be so great because they want you to walk
- 31:23Speaker 2: out and– say, wow, we just found that person.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Right, yeah.
- 31:27Speaker 2: But for a long time, you're right. I felt like
- 31:29Speaker 2: that too.
- 31:30Speaker 1: There's so much self-doubt.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Yeah, where you feel like, oh, I have to go
- 31:32Speaker 2: prove myself and they probably don't want me, but I
- 31:34Speaker 2: have to go talk them into it.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:36Speaker 2: And it's not, that's not really the case.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:39Speaker 2: People want, people want to like you. They're the ones
- 31:41Speaker 2: that called you in.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yes. I also remember Jennifer said to me, she goes,
- 31:47Speaker 1: if the part says, because we would get those breakdowns
- 31:50Speaker 1: and you could read them, the part says, attractive, I
- 31:53Speaker 1: can do it. If it says very attractive, no. She goes,
- 31:56Speaker 1: but if it says character looking, then I'm better looking
- 32:00Speaker 1: than the character. Then I get the, then I really
- 32:02Speaker 1: get the part because I'm just a little bit cuter
- 32:05Speaker 1: than what they were expecting, but I can be funny.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Yeah. She's so great.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:11Speaker 2: She's, she's really so talented, but also her attitude is fantastic.
- 32:17Speaker 1: It's so such a good attitude.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I remember I, We talked on the phone and during
- 32:23Speaker 1: her height of the White Lotus. And I couldn't believe
- 32:27Speaker 1: like she answered my DM and we talked because it
- 32:30Speaker 1: had been years, you know. But when I didn't make
- 32:33Speaker 1: the main company, she's the night before I realized I
- 32:36Speaker 1: didn't make the main company is who I had a
- 32:38Speaker 1: conversation with. And she was like, let me tell you, Heather,
- 32:42Speaker 1: sometimes people get in this company and they stay and
- 32:44Speaker 1: they become fucking freaks. She's like, so if you don't
- 32:47Speaker 1: get it, just know you're in great company. Like you're
- 32:50Speaker 1: a great, because it could be really comfortable, you know?
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 1: When did you, because I don't know the answer to this.
- 32:57Speaker 1: When did you, and I'm explaining groundings to people, but
- 32:59Speaker 1: it's 30 spots. And of those 30 spots, you can
- 33:04Speaker 1: continue to perform on stage in the Friday and Saturday
- 33:07Speaker 1: long run show. If you give that spot up, you
- 33:11Speaker 1: could still come back and teach, do a Thursday, but
- 33:14Speaker 1: you can't be in that. So people that felt it
- 33:16Speaker 1: was very important that they have that showcase sometimes held
- 33:20Speaker 1: on to it way longer. Like they're on SNL, they're
- 33:24Speaker 1: on a WB sitcom, they're on a bus. And you're like,
- 33:27Speaker 1: You were like, you can let go.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Can you give the spot up for this person? Yeah,
- 33:29Speaker 2: for somebody coming in.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Yeah, so how did you decide, like, okay, I think
- 33:33Speaker 1: my career is in a good enough spot that I
- 33:34Speaker 1: can give up the brown list.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Well, when Curb, I got Curb when I,
- 33:41Speaker 2: I think I was in the Sunday company, maybe the
- 33:46Speaker 2: Sunday company, but it hadn't come out. I don't even
- 33:51Speaker 2: know if I had shot it yet. So when I
- 33:53Speaker 2: got into the main company, I was shooting Curb, but
- 33:58Speaker 2: Curb was only shooting 10 episodes. And Larry said, we're
- 34:02Speaker 2: only doing one season. Nobody needs to get excited. So him, right?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:09Speaker 2: So I did the first, I think I did, I
- 34:12Speaker 2: stayed in at least for a year. And then when Curb,
- 34:16Speaker 2: it was clear that we were going to do another season.
- 34:19Speaker 2: And the show was, you know, I would say, critically acclaimed,
- 34:26Speaker 2: you know, is getting attention and a golden globe. And,
- 34:30Speaker 2: you know, it was clear that it was on a path.
- 34:35Speaker 2: That's when I didn't stay in the main company for
- 34:37Speaker 2: very long because that's when I stepped down.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're a classy lady and you care about others.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And you're like, I don't need this platform.
- 34:48Speaker 2: But, you know, you work so hard to get there.
- 34:52Speaker 2: You work so hard to get there that you don't
- 34:53Speaker 2: want to give it up. And there's nothing, nothing's for sure.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Nothing's for sure. But that growling, you can stay until
- 35:00Speaker 1: you're 90. So you had Lisa Kudrow as a teacher.
- 35:04Speaker 2: I did.
- 35:04Speaker 1: I had her for intermediate. You did?
- 35:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Did you love her?
- 35:08Speaker 1: I loved her. And it was, and a funny story
- 35:10Speaker 1: about that, which I've told on the show before, but whatever,
- 35:13Speaker 1: Cheryl hasn't heard it. I haven't heard it. She was
- 35:16Speaker 1: a teacher. We had a lot of substitutes because she
- 35:19Speaker 1: was on Mad About You as the waitress. And then
- 35:23Speaker 1: she said, I'm going to step down from the main company.
- 35:26Speaker 1: And I was like, why? She goes, well, I got
- 35:29Speaker 1: this pilot. And I was like, honey, a lot of
- 35:33Speaker 1: pilots don't get picked up. And she goes, I go,
- 35:35Speaker 1: what's it even about? She's like, it's about six friends.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Living in New York. And I just remember, I just
- 35:40Speaker 1: imagined like her and a bunch of people like on
- 35:42Speaker 1: a subway. And I'm like, this sounds awful. She goes,
- 35:46Speaker 1: I go, I don't know. Like, you sure you want
- 35:49Speaker 1: to do this? You know, at the time she was
- 35:51Speaker 1: only like 31. And I go, um, and she goes, well,
- 35:55Speaker 1: it's following Seinfeld. And I go, okay, you know what?
- 36:00Speaker 1: I'll pray for you. Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Good luck with that little project.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Yeah. You've got to bet on yourself. You've got to
- 36:07Speaker 1: have the confidence of yourself. Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 2: They think you're done for the day, but they don't
- 36:13Speaker 2: know about the drawer. The drawer. Just the one square
- 36:19Speaker 2: before bed. Or two, you know. Nobody's watching.
- 36:25Speaker 1: You deserve a treat.
- 36:30Speaker 2: With eight flavors to choose from, you can choose the
- 36:32Speaker 2: flavor you favor with Cadbury Dairy Milk.
- 36:41Speaker 3: I'm Darman, and this is What Happens Next. Each week
- 36:44Speaker 3: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 36:47Speaker 3: have faced tremendous setbacks and yet somehow have found a
- 36:52Speaker 3: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Life is one long lesson of chaos. I'm heading to
- 36:58Speaker 1: the Emmys, and I have police complaints filed against me.
- 37:01Speaker 2: When your free will was about to be taken from you,
- 37:03Speaker 2: what would you do if it was given back?
- 37:05Speaker 3: Where did that need come from where you thought that
- 37:08Speaker 3: you had to succeed in order to feel loved?
- 37:11Speaker 1: He said, I have a work dad.
- 37:12Speaker 3: I need a home dad.
- 37:13Speaker 2: What happens next?
- 37:14Speaker 1: When I came in, he started crying.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 37:20Speaker 3: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 37:23Speaker 3: happens next.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I decided to risk it all.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I realized how valuable every day was.
- 37:27Speaker 2: You're worth the work.
- 37:28Speaker 5: Listen, Dara, I'm not going to pull punches.
- 37:30Speaker 1: You can use your voice even if it's shaped.
- 37:33Speaker 3: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 37:47Speaker 1: So when you met your first husband, the father of
- 37:51Speaker 1: your daughter, Catherine, who goes by Kat. Now, he was
- 37:55Speaker 1: a manager. I'm curious, in that pairing of falling in
- 37:58Speaker 1: love with him, did that elevate your career? Because he
- 38:02Speaker 1: knew what he was doing. Was he putting you in
- 38:04Speaker 1: even a better stratosphere than you already were as just
- 38:07Speaker 1: a regular on a show?
- 38:09Speaker 2: I would say yes. He wasn't my manager for a
- 38:14Speaker 2: long time.
- 38:15Speaker 4: But.
- 38:17Speaker 2: he was very helpful in guiding me and say, you know,
- 38:23Speaker 2: Curb Your Enthusiasm is a very specific show and you should,
- 38:29Speaker 2: you know, you have a lot of time off in
- 38:31Speaker 2: between seasons. So you should be going in for films.
- 38:37Speaker 2: And even if you can't do another TV show, because I,
- 38:40Speaker 2: at that point I couldn't because of Curb, you should
- 38:43Speaker 2: be doing other things. And my, Agent, at the time,
- 38:49Speaker 2: I remember him saying this. He said, and I said
- 38:54Speaker 2: that to my agent. I wasn't with a big agency then.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Still, even though you're in Curb. No one was trying
- 39:00Speaker 1: to poach you?
- 39:01Speaker 2: They were, but I said, no, I want to stay
- 39:06Speaker 2: with this agent.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I want to be loyal because you're a classy lady.
- 39:12Speaker 2: And I said... I would like to go and do
- 39:15Speaker 2: films in between. And he said, that's not really how
- 39:20Speaker 2: it works. He's like, you're on TV and that doesn't happen.
- 39:23Speaker 2: I said, and at the time I remember Kelsey Grammer
- 39:26Speaker 2: had just done a film. I said, Kelsey Grammer just
- 39:29Speaker 2: did a film. And he said, you're no Kelsey Grammer.
- 39:31Speaker 2: I was like, and then I would go home and
- 39:34Speaker 2: tell Paul and his brain would explode. He was like,
- 39:38Speaker 2: oh my God, now I'm going to have to call
- 39:39Speaker 2: the agent. So he did a lot of work where
- 39:42Speaker 2: he would call the agent or he would, if he
- 39:45Speaker 2: knew about a project, he, you know, would say, oh, Well,
- 39:49Speaker 2: maybe you should look at Cheryl for this project, you know.
- 39:53Speaker 2: So after.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but going back to that agent thing, I always
- 39:57Speaker 1: remember Kim Kardashian had said she had a publicist. And
- 40:00Speaker 1: it's a long time ago. And and right. I don't
- 40:04Speaker 1: even know if the show had come out or whatever.
- 40:06Speaker 1: And she's like, I want to be like on the
- 40:09Speaker 1: cover of magazines one day. And the publicist said, oh, honey,
- 40:13Speaker 1: you're never going to be on a cover of a magazine.
- 40:15Speaker 1: We'll try to get you, you know, on the red
- 40:17Speaker 1: carpet asking people questions. And luckily she had the confidence
- 40:21Speaker 1: to be like, well, then this isn't the person, you know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: that should be representing me. And it's like your dreams
- 40:26Speaker 1: have to be bigger than everyone else's.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And so many times we do like, you know, even
- 40:32Speaker 1: with the Sunday company, I didn't realize I would manifest stuff.
- 40:35Speaker 1: And you clearly in your book, you're, you're manifesting things
- 40:39Speaker 1: with throughout your life, kind of without knowing what that was.
- 40:43Speaker 1: And same with me because the secret hadn't come out,
- 40:45Speaker 1: but I remember going to.
- 40:46Speaker 2: The secret and everybody changed my life.
- 40:50Speaker 1: And so it really did. It really did change my life.
- 40:52Speaker 2: How did it change your life?
- 40:53Speaker 1: Because I was at home with my children.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Does everybody know what the secret is?
- 40:57Speaker 1: The secret was a book that came out that was
- 40:59Speaker 1: truly about manifestation and like.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Say it, believe it, see it.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Some people would make boards and cut out magazines of like,
- 41:09Speaker 1: I want to go to Hawaii next year. Here's a
- 41:11Speaker 1: check for $ 1, 000.
- 41:13Speaker 2: You see yourself doing it.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Jim Carrey has a classic story of where he wrote
- 41:17Speaker 1: himself a $ 10 million check and he put a date
- 41:19Speaker 1: on it. And literally like weeks before that date, he
- 41:22Speaker 1: was offered a movie for $ 10 million, but he'd written
- 41:25Speaker 1: it like 20 years prior, like just things like that.
- 41:27Speaker 1: And so I was with my kids and I was
- 41:31Speaker 1: still going out for little auditions and things like that.
- 41:34Speaker 1: And I hadn't done standup in many years. I lived
- 41:37Speaker 1: in Woodland Hills. I, you know, I was just telling
- 41:40Speaker 1: my son this and I realized this later. I never
- 41:42Speaker 1: lived like in LA. I never lived where the agents
- 41:45Speaker 1: and the people were moving and shaking. And I kind
- 41:47Speaker 1: of realized in the last year, oh, I wonder if
- 41:51Speaker 1: I had gone to those schools and seen the parents. Like,
- 41:54Speaker 1: would I just be top of mind? Because sometimes you
- 41:56Speaker 1: just see someone, you know, and you're like, that's who
- 41:58Speaker 1: I need. Like, I remember I was at a dinner
- 42:00Speaker 1: with Tracee Ellis Ross. We had our first show together,
- 42:02Speaker 1: Lyricist Lounge. And she took me to this cool restaurant
- 42:05Speaker 1: on 3rd Street. And then she called me to tell
- 42:07Speaker 1: me she got girlfriends. And she goes, you know, Heather,
- 42:09Speaker 1: how I got that? the writer producer walked in and
- 42:12Speaker 1: saw me having dinner with you and was like, that's Joan.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Wow.
- 42:15Speaker 1: And so I'm like, but then all these years later,
- 42:18Speaker 1: I'm like, I wouldn't have, I wouldn't have built this. Right.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Which now this is a great situation and I love it.
- 42:24Speaker 1: I'm not, I'm not jealous of anything that I see anymore.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Like I'm not, there was a time when I'd be like, Oh,
- 42:31Speaker 1: like I wish I was honest to come. And then
- 42:33Speaker 1: my life took away where I'm like, no, I'm very,
- 42:35Speaker 1: very satisfied. But like those kinds of things, but getting
- 42:38Speaker 1: back to the secret. So, My friend dropped it off
- 42:43Speaker 1: like on my doorstep, this DVD, and I watched it.
- 42:47Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, if you just, that's it.
- 42:50Speaker 1: And then like literally I went back to doing standup
- 42:53Speaker 1: and then like six months later, I was working on Chelsea.
- 42:57Speaker 1: And then from there, I, cause I also knew I
- 43:00Speaker 1: was getting, I was like 37. I'm like, if I
- 43:02Speaker 1: don't get like a regular TV show now.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:04Speaker 1: If I wait like another five years, it's going to
- 43:06Speaker 1: be too hard.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Like I got it. And it was hard. And I
- 43:10Speaker 1: have a lot of guilt about not being home with
- 43:11Speaker 1: my kids.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Your daughter was born when you were like 39. Yeah.
- 43:16Speaker 5: And.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Was there ever, how did you maneuver when you were gone,
- 43:22Speaker 1: like on a set or whatnot?
- 43:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it was hard. And I mean, I would, it
- 43:27Speaker 2: was easier when she was little because when I did RV,
- 43:31Speaker 2: I just brought her with me. I did a movie
- 43:33Speaker 2: called The Grand and brought her with me. But, you know,
- 43:39Speaker 2: she had a great nanny who would bring her to
- 43:43Speaker 2: my trailer for lunch, you know. And then, yeah, when
- 43:47Speaker 2: I was on, At location, I would have, you know,
- 43:54Speaker 2: have someone fly out with her. But it is hard
- 43:58Speaker 2: when you look back, and it was hard even at
- 44:01Speaker 2: the time because you, as a mother, you kept thinking,
- 44:04Speaker 2: am I doing the right thing? But also, you know,
- 44:10Speaker 2: work brought me so much happiness, and it made me
- 44:13Speaker 2: a happy, full person. So I would have to, I
- 44:18Speaker 2: was always balancing both of those things because I, I
- 44:23Speaker 2: wanted her to see, you know, this is what your
- 44:27Speaker 2: life can be. You can have success and you can,
- 44:32Speaker 2: you can make your dreams come true. And I wanted
- 44:36Speaker 2: to model that for her. And at the same time,
- 44:40Speaker 2: there were times when, you know, where I wasn't there
- 44:44Speaker 2: for Mother's Day or, Yeah.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I missed a Mother's Day.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Yeah. It's hard.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It's really hard. I remember being in a, doing like
- 44:52Speaker 1: five shows like in Phoenix or something and it was
- 44:55Speaker 1: a great deal because they were like, it's Mother's Day weekend. Like,
- 44:57Speaker 1: let's listen to a funny mother, right?
- 44:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:00Speaker 1: And I just remember I like went down and there
- 45:02Speaker 1: was all these people having Mother's Day brunch at the
- 45:04Speaker 1: hotel and I was just like, you know, but this
- 45:09Speaker 1: is what I chose. This is what I wanted. My
- 45:11Speaker 1: husband was supportive of it and I know the kids,
- 45:13Speaker 1: it's not like my sons today are like, It's Mother's Day.
- 45:16Speaker 2: I cannot wait to wait on you hand and foot
- 45:19Speaker 2: all day. Exactly.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Yeah. But it is such a, you know, it is
- 45:23Speaker 1: a challenge. And you always kind of go, like, what
- 45:25Speaker 1: is the right thing? And, you know, you can't have
- 45:28Speaker 1: it all. You can have it most. You cannot have
- 45:31Speaker 1: it all, like, in my opinion. Like, you just, it's,
- 45:33Speaker 1: something's going to give.
- 45:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Because would you be happy just being home all the time? And,
- 45:40Speaker 2: you know, one might be. Like, if I wasn't driven.
- 45:45Speaker 2: All I, I, I always knew I wanted to be
- 45:47Speaker 2: an actor. So that was in me, you know, but my,
- 45:53Speaker 2: you know, when I talked to my daughter, who's grown now,
- 45:56Speaker 2: she really, she wants, she really wants to be a mother.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Like she's, so she, she talks about it. Like I
- 46:03Speaker 2: talked about being an actor, you know, but when, so
- 46:06Speaker 2: it's interesting because there are definitely some people who that
- 46:11Speaker 2: they're not, if they, if they're home all the time,
- 46:13Speaker 2: they're not sitting there going, thinking, ah, I wonder if
- 46:16Speaker 2: I could have made that other thing happen too. Yeah.
- 46:20Speaker 1: And yeah, that's why, yeah, exactly. I, you know, and
- 46:23Speaker 1: talking about when you're dating the Charlie guy, when I
- 46:26Speaker 1: was reading that, I'm like, I dated some people that, um,
- 46:32Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I wonder if I would have
- 46:33Speaker 1: just gone down the, you know, married the Newport guy.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:39Speaker 1: I'm like, there's no way that family, him and, would
- 46:44Speaker 1: have been like, oh, your wife's going down to the
- 46:47Speaker 1: improv again? Like, what a fucking loser. Like, when is
- 46:49Speaker 1: she going to make any money at this? Like, you needed, like,
- 46:52Speaker 1: so whoever I was going to choose, like even with
- 46:56Speaker 1: my husband, I had boyfriends that were like, I mean,
- 46:59Speaker 1: do you ever get any of these auditions? I was like, no,
- 47:01Speaker 1: I don't. I never book anything. I just like going
- 47:04Speaker 1: on them. And it's like, why do you keep doing it?
- 47:06Speaker 2: Why do you keep doing it?
- 47:08Speaker 1: That was Charlie.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Yeah. He'd be like, why would you do a play
- 47:11Speaker 2: for free?
- 47:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:13Speaker 2: That's how you do it. Because I love acting.
- 47:16Speaker 1: I love it.
- 47:16Speaker 2: It doesn't pay.
- 47:17Speaker 1: I'm like, I'll keep doing it and love it in
- 47:19Speaker 1: the excitement of it until I don't love it anymore.
- 47:21Speaker 1: And then if I feel like, yeah. And so, yeah,
- 47:25Speaker 1: I was always doing things. When I was doing real estate,
- 47:28Speaker 1: when I was doing whatever, I was always, always had
- 47:30Speaker 1: it on. If I wasn't doing standup, I was still
- 47:32Speaker 1: like auditioning and booking enough stuff to like get things.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And so I find that like, you know, so interesting.
- 47:38Speaker 1: And then as being a mom and the other part
- 47:42Speaker 1: that I thought was so brave in your book of
- 47:45Speaker 1: like the idea of why you didn't want to have
- 47:48Speaker 1: a second child. Can you kind of speak on that?
- 47:51Speaker 1: Cause I think it's like.
- 47:52Speaker 2: It's kind of embarrassing to admit. No, I don't think
- 47:54Speaker 2: it is.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I think it's really interesting.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Well, I, when I had my daughter, Kat, Catherine, I was,
- 48:01Speaker 2: I fell in love with her from the moment I
- 48:06Speaker 2: saw her face. And I was, I was just like,
- 48:12Speaker 2: nobody else in the world matters. And I just, I mean,
- 48:18Speaker 2: to this day, you know, I see her and I just, oh,
- 48:22Speaker 2: my heart. It just makes me happy. She brings me
- 48:26Speaker 2: so much joy and I love her so much. So
- 48:30Speaker 2: when she was little, you know, I thought about having
- 48:35Speaker 2: another child and I thought, I'm not going to like them.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Because I love her so much.
- 48:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:42Speaker 2: All I wanted to do was, even when she was sleeping,
- 48:45Speaker 2: I would take pictures of her because This is her
- 48:47Speaker 2: with her eyes closed. This is her sleeping. You know,
- 48:50Speaker 2: and I would watch her. And then I would think,
- 48:53Speaker 2: if I had another baby, I'm going to get stuck
- 48:57Speaker 2: with the baby.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Well, also, I mean, she looks, I'm going to go
- 49:01Speaker 1: to her. She looks so much like you. She's gorgeous.
- 49:04Speaker 2: She's very beautiful. I know.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I mean, blue eyes, big. And I remember when I
- 49:08Speaker 1: met her, because you invited me to like a New
- 49:11Speaker 1: Year's Eve party at your house in Brentwood.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Like a very casual one. I was pregnant with my
- 49:16Speaker 1: second son. So she was like two. And I remember
- 49:19Speaker 1: seeing her and I was like, oh my God, that's
- 49:21Speaker 1: Cheryl's like big, big smile.
- 49:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:26Speaker 1: She's stunning. Yeah.
- 49:27Speaker 2: And so I thought, oh, I, I, I'm not falling
- 49:31Speaker 2: for this because if I have a, if I have
- 49:33Speaker 2: a baby, then. We'll get to hang out with Kat.
- 49:37Speaker 2: And I'm going to be stuck with a baby I
- 49:39Speaker 2: don't like as much as Kat. And then, you know,
- 49:43Speaker 2: but I would think about it. I know other people
- 49:45Speaker 2: do it. You know, other people have more than one child.
- 49:47Speaker 2: I don't know how they do it.
- 49:48Speaker 1: You know, it is weird. And I remember when I
- 49:51Speaker 1: gave birth to my second son, who I love very much, Brandon.
- 49:55Speaker 1: But I remember having weird thoughts going, if I had
- 50:00Speaker 1: to choose one... I know this one so much better,
- 50:03Speaker 1: the one that's two and a half.
- 50:05Speaker 2: And I already like them.
- 50:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 50:06Speaker 1: And I was just like... But then... And I remember
- 50:08Speaker 1: even Khloe Kardashian revealed that, you know, she carried one
- 50:12Speaker 1: and had to have a surrogate carry the boy. And
- 50:14Speaker 1: she was very honest about this connection. And she thought
- 50:17Speaker 1: it was the surrogate thing. And I said, oh, I wish...
- 50:20Speaker 1: She knows it's not that.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:21Speaker 1: It's that you know the older one.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:23Speaker 1: And the love of the relationship will come and it's...
- 50:26Speaker 1: And then, you know... Yeah. And then you have that
- 50:28Speaker 1: younger one that's like into... cuddling a lot longer than
- 50:31Speaker 1: the older one like it's all interesting but I think
- 50:34Speaker 1: that you know What's great about, you know, our world
- 50:37Speaker 1: and women today is that, you know, you really can
- 50:38Speaker 1: make those choices for what's right for you and you
- 50:41Speaker 1: shouldn't be sucked into, well, you know, your parents want
- 50:45Speaker 1: you to have two or whatever. And with your schedule
- 50:48Speaker 1: and everything. And one is always easier. And one girl,
- 50:51Speaker 1: I think, is the easiest. Yeah, she would.
- 50:53Speaker 2: She liked to color, you know. And then I would
- 50:57Speaker 2: be around, you know, moms with little boys.
- 51:00Speaker 1: It's a whole different thing.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Jumping on the couches and... But then... Like I said,
- 51:05Speaker 2: like I talk about in my book, that when I
- 51:06Speaker 2: met Bobby, and Bobby had six kids already. And I
- 51:12Speaker 2: just love them.
- 51:14Speaker 1: I love them.
- 51:15Speaker 2: But I realized, oh, right, this is what happens. You
- 51:19Speaker 2: don't have the same, you're never going to have the
- 51:22Speaker 2: same relationship with each child. It's so different.
- 51:26Speaker 1: It's so different. And so many times, you know, people
- 51:28Speaker 1: are like, oh, she was the favorite or whatever. It's like,
- 51:31Speaker 1: I think that it's sometimes if, it's your personality just
- 51:36Speaker 1: aligns better with one. Sometimes you're too much like the
- 51:40Speaker 1: child and you might butt heads a little bit or
- 51:43Speaker 1: you're also so much like that you get along or
- 51:47Speaker 1: whatever it is. But the love... I believe is the same. Yeah.
- 51:51Speaker 1: It's just sometimes, yeah, the relationship's a little different. And
- 51:54Speaker 1: also in different stages of life. Right. One child could
- 51:57Speaker 1: be the easiest teenager ever and then maybe they struggle
- 51:59Speaker 1: in their 20s or vice versa. Like there's no, oh,
- 52:02Speaker 1: get past the toddler years. You know, like toddler years
- 52:04Speaker 1: for some kids might be the easiest. I don't know.
- 52:06Speaker 1: I don't know what your kid's going to be like
- 52:07Speaker 1: in fourth grade. Right. You know, and so, yeah.
- 52:10Speaker 2: So, yeah. So when I had... When I had stepkids.
- 52:14Speaker 1: They're all so cute.
- 52:15Speaker 2: No, they're so.
- 52:16Speaker 1: And you have, I didn't realize you have grandchildren.
- 52:19Speaker 2: I do.
- 52:19Speaker 1: How great is that?
- 52:21Speaker 2: It's pretty cute.
- 52:22Speaker 1: People don't realize the joy of being, marrying someone that's
- 52:26Speaker 1: maybe a little older or later in life, whether you
- 52:28Speaker 1: have kids or not. Even if you're a woman who
- 52:31Speaker 1: never had kids, you can be hot step grandma.
- 52:34Speaker 2: I am hot step grandma. I'm Cher Bear. It's just
- 52:37Speaker 2: like my mom. Oh, that's cute. I talk about my
- 52:40Speaker 2: mom in the book because her name is Rosemary. When
- 52:43Speaker 2: she became a step-grandmother, she didn't want to be called Grandma.
- 52:47Speaker 2: So we called her Cracklin' Rosie. And, you know, for
- 52:50Speaker 2: so many years, I thought, that's so ridiculous.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:55Speaker 2: She doesn't want to be called Grandma. And then, you know,
- 52:57Speaker 2: I have these, my step-grandkids, grandkids. It's like, just call
- 53:03Speaker 2: me Cher Bear. Don't you dare call me Grandmother. You
- 53:08Speaker 2: know what, though?
- 53:09Speaker 1: Speaking of which, you did a movie called the mom's,
- 53:13Speaker 1: what was it called?
- 53:13Speaker 2: Bad Mom's Christmas.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Bad Mom's, and I was like, why is Cheryl playing
- 53:19Speaker 1: the mother of Kristen Bell? And I'm like, I hope
- 53:22Speaker 1: they establish that, like, she gave birth at 14.
- 53:25Speaker 2: I think we did talk about that. I had her
- 53:27Speaker 2: when I was very young, in my, you know, 18
- 53:30Speaker 2: or 19 or something.
- 53:31Speaker 1: I always think that must be, that must have been
- 53:34Speaker 1: kind of interesting. Like, when you got the offer, was
- 53:36Speaker 1: that an offer too? Was there any part of that
- 53:38Speaker 1: you were like, okay, I don't know that I identify
- 53:41Speaker 1: as a grandmother with a daughter of this age, but like,
- 53:46Speaker 1: I'm not going to turn down a role. Like, is
- 53:47Speaker 1: there anything that's like, good news is you got a part.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Bad news is you're playing someone that you're not.
- 53:53Speaker 2: It was a discussion, you know, because it was like,
- 53:56Speaker 2: I was, you know, talking with the directors and I'm like,
- 54:00Speaker 2: is this, are people going to believe it? But then
- 54:06Speaker 2: if you guys are saying, Then you see me as
- 54:11Speaker 2: being old enough. So I guess that's all that mattered.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:15Speaker 2: And then, yeah, they sort of rewrote that part in
- 54:18Speaker 2: the script where I was really, really young when I
- 54:20Speaker 2: had her.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Okay. So then what I also love before we get to,
- 54:26Speaker 1: here we are getting married. to your second husband, Bobby.
- 54:32Speaker 1: What I loved is, I know you got divorced from
- 54:36Speaker 1: Kat's dad. I did not know that you had the
- 54:39Speaker 1: nicest divorce, the most pleasant co-parenting. I mean, how the
- 54:45Speaker 1: hell does that happen? And in Hollywood, like how, who,
- 54:49Speaker 1: and you know, you don't talk that much about it,
- 54:51Speaker 1: but I don't know how much more you want to
- 54:52Speaker 1: tell me. Like, When did you kind of feel like
- 54:55Speaker 1: I don't think this is forever or did you ever
- 54:58Speaker 1: have the discussion before you guys both agreed?
- 55:00Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 55:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:01Speaker 2: I mean, it was, you know, we were married for
- 55:04Speaker 2: seven years and I know that there he was working
- 55:13Speaker 2: a lot. I was I was working, too, but just
- 55:17Speaker 2: so really it was cat. You know, everything was about cat.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And we just have a different approach in life. You know, he,
- 55:31Speaker 2: Paul is intense. He's like, he's great at negotiations. You know,
- 55:40Speaker 2: he does contracts and stuff. And he's like, if both
- 55:43Speaker 2: sides aren't mad at the end, it wasn't a good negotiation.
- 55:47Speaker 2: You know, and people would come up to me and go, well,
- 55:52Speaker 2: your husband's like bulldog. And I'd say, oh, I know.
- 55:57Speaker 2: So he said he's mellowed out, but still has that intensity,
- 56:03Speaker 2: but in a different way. But I was always, you know,
- 56:08Speaker 2: I remember one time we were talking about money, you know,
- 56:13Speaker 2: and talking about what happens if we don't have enough
- 56:17Speaker 2: money for this. And I said something stupid like, we'll
- 56:20Speaker 2: just plant another money tree. And he's like, I'm trying
- 56:26Speaker 2: to have a conversation, you know? And it's like, oh,
- 56:28Speaker 2: I know I'm listening. I'm sorry. And you're right. There
- 56:30Speaker 2: are no money trees.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 56:31Speaker 2: But so I, my approach is always a little bit lighter,
- 56:36Speaker 2: you know, and look on the bright side. Let's, let's
- 56:41Speaker 2: focus on the positive. And it was not, it's not
- 56:46Speaker 2: a good match that way because we would have a
- 56:48Speaker 2: hard time communicating sometimes because it's like.
- 56:52Speaker 1: So you guys have a good divorce. He actually went
- 56:55Speaker 1: on vacation together with Bobby and you and your daughter.
- 57:01Speaker 1: And so you fall in love with Bobby and you
- 57:04Speaker 1: met him years back. At the Waterkeeper event. And then,
- 57:11Speaker 1: which was a big charity, which I did a video, Rachel,
- 57:14Speaker 1: your friend, your best friend, my friend too, Rachel Harris.
- 57:17Speaker 1: I did a little video of it. And then I
- 57:20Speaker 1: went to the evening and then I saw you guys
- 57:22Speaker 1: there and you're like, what are you doing here? And
- 57:23Speaker 1: you're just like walking through the thing. And I was like, oh, okay,
- 57:27Speaker 1: can I go on the, can I go on the,
- 57:28Speaker 1: Peter was like, get us on the ski trip. Like
- 57:31Speaker 1: we were watching this whole thing and there was like
- 57:32Speaker 1: a celebrity ski trip. And I'm like, I just think
- 57:34Speaker 1: they wanted me for like the, PSA video I don't
- 57:37Speaker 1: know what but it was all good and but I
- 57:40Speaker 1: was when you got married I was like oh my
- 57:42Speaker 1: god I can't believe that Cheryl is marrying a Kennedy
- 57:46Speaker 1: because there's so many interesting things about the like the
- 57:49Speaker 1: connection of the universe one was that you loved Carol
- 57:52Speaker 1: Burnett more than anybody mine was the Joan Rivers and
- 57:54Speaker 1: I met Joan Rivers too I would stay up to
- 57:56Speaker 1: watch Joan Rivers when she would guest star on Johnny,
- 57:59Speaker 1: but you would go in the other room to watch
- 58:01Speaker 1: Carol Burnett.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 1: And because of our friend Julie Welch, whose parents worked
- 58:06Speaker 1: on Carol Burnett's show, Carol actually came to the show
- 58:09Speaker 1: to watch you guys.
- 58:10Speaker 2: To the Sunday Company. She came to the Sunday Company.
- 58:13Speaker 1: I don't know if I was on there. I don't
- 58:14Speaker 1: know if I totally remember that. That might have been
- 58:16Speaker 1: when I wasn't.
- 58:16Speaker 2: You would have remembered, I think, because it was such
- 58:19Speaker 2: a big deal. Yeah. We were like, And remember at
- 58:22Speaker 2: the Groundlings, like, you could peek through, like, a tiny crack,
- 58:25Speaker 2: and sometimes you could see somebody in the audience. And
- 58:28Speaker 2: I just remember, yeah, Carol coming and feeling like, wow,
- 58:33Speaker 2: the universe is crazy.
- 58:35Speaker 1: And then do you remember when JFK Jr. came, too?
- 58:37Speaker 3: I do.
- 58:38Speaker 2: I do. Isn't that funny?
- 58:40Speaker 1: Now, in my memory, but I don't know if it's true,
- 58:43Speaker 1: he was wearing a beret. Remember when he was wearing
- 58:45Speaker 1: berets a lot? I talked to this to Carol Radziwill,
- 58:50Speaker 1: you know, who was— You know who Carol Roswell is? So,
- 58:53Speaker 1: and she was like, Heather, she's like left. She was like,
- 58:55Speaker 1: I don't know if he's wearing a beret. I'm like,
- 58:57Speaker 1: he would wear a beret shirtless in the streets of
- 58:59Speaker 1: New York. Like the way I imagined like the pose.
- 59:01Speaker 1: I don't remember if he was wearing a beret. But
- 59:04Speaker 1: he might have been wearing like a beanie. Like a beanie, yeah.
- 59:08Speaker 2: That would be hilarious if he was in a beret
- 59:10Speaker 2: at the ground.
- 59:10Speaker 1: But the connection of Brian Ruff, who was his friend.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Kevin Ruff, yeah. Kevin Ruff, who was his friend, who
- 59:18Speaker 1: was an actor.
- 59:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:20Speaker 1: But also a lawyer. He's the one who invited him. Yes.
- 59:23Speaker 1: And so then to find out, I'm like, this is
- 59:25Speaker 1: such a weird thing that, that Cheryl is now marrying
- 59:29Speaker 1: into the Kennedy family. And like, I'm like, how great
- 59:32Speaker 1: is this? Like, like this is like, and I remember
- 59:34Speaker 1: thinking like, wow, Cheryl's led a life. Like, you know,
- 59:38Speaker 1: like from that, from, you know, from like.
- 59:40Speaker 2: From Tallahassee, Florida.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Yeah, to that. I'm like, and this is great. You know,
- 59:45Speaker 1: he does this great show. Who doesn't like water?
- 59:48Speaker 2: Right. Everybody likes clean water.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone likes clean water.
- 59:51Speaker 2: Who's mad about that?
- 59:51Speaker 3: Nobody.
- 59:52Speaker 1: No one's mad about clean water. And then when he
- 59:56Speaker 1: was running for president, at first, it seemed quite positive
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: for people from both sides being like, Well, this is
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: who I'm going to go for because I don't like
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: this person. I don't like this person. And I was like, oh,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: my God, like Cheryl might be the first lady. And
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I was like, I wish you would have kept in
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: touch a little bit better because I'm like, I want
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to fucking invite to the White House. And so I
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: want to know. Yes. During the window of where it
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: wasn't Hollywood hating you and your husband. What were there
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: some friends that was like, this is fucking cool, Cheryl.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: This could be a lot of fun for us. Can
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I spend the night? Like who was like in it
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: and excited or was everyone just like, what the hell's
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: going on?
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: I mean, most people were like, what the hell's going on?
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: There was hardly anybody who was daydreaming about.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: You should have kept in touch with this thirsty bitch.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: But people did.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Like to ask me in interviews, you know, because and
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: there was no good answer, right? Because if I said, oh, yeah,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I would love to be first lady and dream about
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: picking out the wallpaper or, you know, starting my own
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: foundation or whatever, then that answer would be like, whoa,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: somebody's delusional. Yeah. You know what I mean? And if
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: I said that. And the truth was I really did
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: not sit around thinking about that because the reality of
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: what would have to happen and the universal lining for
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: that to happen was so— So.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: You never really thought it was a possibility that he
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: could win? Did you act like you were, like, I mean,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: did you have a conversation, like, he's doing this, but
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: he's not? Or were you like, hey, Bobby, you do you, boo.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: And I'll be there if it works out. But then
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: in your own head or on the phone of your sister,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you're like, this is not going to ever freaking happen.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: Well, there were, there were, I did feel like it
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: was possible.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: It was, a lot of it was not probable. And
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: mostly because... because of the way that election unfolded, it was,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: because when he first said he was going to run,
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: he was running as a Democrat, and that was before
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: the primaries. So that was, I think he announced in July,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: and then the primaries were, they start in, you know,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: the next year in January. So usually the primaries, the
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Democratic primaries, it starts to, after a few primaries, one
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: candidate will start winning. And it's an indicator that this
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: candidate has the most support. And so, so for me,
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: it was like, okay, let's, let's get to the primaries and,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: and see what kind of support you have. So every,
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: every bit of along the way, it was different hurdles
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: that you had to get over. So, At that moment,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: I'm not thinking, well, I can't wait to get to
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: the White House. I'm like, let's get to the primaries
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: and see what happens. But then right before the primaries,
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: word was and it did happen that they were canceling
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: the primaries and states were just saying, okay, we're going
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: to support Biden. Right. So then it was clear he
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: had no path. He could not win a primary if
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: there were no primaries.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: So so then he switched to an independent. And to
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: to get on the ballot as an independent is so
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: different than if you were a Republican or a Democrat.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: And I'll probably bore your audience because you're like, no.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Not, you know, in the past.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: You know, lived on this earth long.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: There's there was Perot. There was there were some that
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: got a little further, but they really then they would say,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: don't vote for the independent because they're never going to
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: win and you're wasting your right.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: So it was never that I didn't believe Bobby. I
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: think Bobby would make an amazing president. He's very, very smart.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: He's a great leader. And he's a graceful person. But
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: it was for him to, yeah, for an independent to win,
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: and it just hasn't happened before.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: So I don't.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Know.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: I wasn't like packing my bags for the White House.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: I was like, let's get through April and then we'll
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: see what May looks like, you know.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: And so then we jumped to, you know, when that's it,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: you know, he has endorsed Trump and all of this.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: And you get dumped from Hollywood Friends. You are... Yeah.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: And I was like, it made me sad to like
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: see that and read it. Not surprised.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: And in, you've been very graceful in talking about, I'm
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: just going to say it, Tig Notaro, she did a podcast.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: She said how she could no longer talk to you
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: or have any association with you because you're married to
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Bobby Kennedy. And you said, could you please, we want
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: to share our our thoughts of where we realize that
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: we're not any, you know, not different people. We could,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: whatever it was. And no, I don't want to hear that.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: I don't want to hear, I don't want to be
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: like in my, I don't want to hear anything that
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: might convince me of otherwise of the decision I made
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: of the path I'm on, whatever. And that was sad
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: because you guys had a friendship. You had a fun
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: podcast where you talk about documentaries. And I just want
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: to say to that, that person did not love you enough.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: to want to be your friend forever. And in Hollywood,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: you can be very close. And when you're comedians and
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: when you're doing podcasting and the world is listening to
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: a friendship, they get very sad when the friendship ends
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: because they're like, we saw the friendship, but it still
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: is a working relationship. And sometimes that just happens. I,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: you know, I've had a friend where I wasn't happy
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: that they were still aligned with somebody that hurt me
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: very much, but I was like, But I love this
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: friend so much.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: That there's no way I'm going to let this friend
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: out of my life.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: And maybe in a couple years, this won't even matter.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: But I'm not going to do something so definitive that
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: they're no longer in my life.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Right out of your life, yeah.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: And I can't, that must have been like so weird
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: and hard for you.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: It was, it was hard, you know, and it was,
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: I was surprised, you know, and I guess, you know,
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: and then I stopped being surprised. But I was surprised that,
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: because I know people are passionate about politics. I know
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: it's very upsetting to some people, no matter who's in office.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: No, but it has changed. I mean, it's crazy.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: People are really, really....
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: I mean, I forgot about this until I was doing
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: my makeup this morning, but my aunt, Claire Carey, she passed.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: She was raised a Democrat with my dad because the
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: dad was in the unions. He was a firefighter. And
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: then in the 50s, she was like working as an
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: independent lady. She didn't get married until she's 34. And
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: she married DJ Carey. And D.J. Carey came from the Careys,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: who are a huge Democratic family. She had switched to
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: becoming a Republican during the 50s. And she married him.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: And his brother became the governor of New York. And
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the Carey friends were probably, if you say it to
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: your husband, he'll know several of my cousins. The kids
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: hung out. They went to boarding school together. They knew
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: each other. And she never stopped being a Republican. And
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: all the families knew it. All the families knew it.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: And she'd laugh about it. And it was fine. Right.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: I think she voted for her brother-in-law, but other than that.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: And it was like.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Life goes on.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Yeah, they didn't not do Christmas together. They did not.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: It was never. It was kind of, it was sort
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: of interesting and kind of funny. And like, that was it.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: And it's like, of course, now people are probably screaming. Okay,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I get it. But I'm just saying it is interesting that,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: There was a time when either you didn't talk about
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: it or you could. agree to disagree and still be
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: friends and family.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Yeah. Agree to disagree.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: And there's something maybe with social media, something where it's
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: just so ingrained in you that for a certain population
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: of people, they have decided this is this, like a
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: religion on both sides.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: And there is nothing that will change their mind.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: No matter what.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: And they will give up people and da-da-da, because they've
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: gone down such a long path that they can never go,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: you know what? I was wrong about that.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: No, nobody will say that.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Of these types.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Of these types.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Other people, yeah. That's the extreme. Other people, yeah. A lot,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: most of us will be like, oh, I did think that,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: and now I feel differently.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Or that's a good point.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: I'm going to think about it.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think that's what's really hard, because you
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: were never... at that extreme person, you were a Democrat
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: at one point independent, you know? So, and he was when,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I'm sure when he, when you got with him, it
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: was perfect. You're with the Democrat. He's from the cool family,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: the loved family. Like he does, he, who doesn't like water?
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: All safe.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: It's like, it's like I said, what about the cyber truck?
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: I go, nothing went from so cool to so uncool
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: so quickly. Except for the truck and Bobby Kennedy.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: It was a 180. I'm like, oh, oh, okay. This
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: is where we are now.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: And when he said, well, we could fake a separation
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: because he felt so bad because nobody liked you anymore.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: And you're like, let's not do that.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: But you know what? I understand it because I have
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: some friends that I don't want. people having feelings about
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: my friends being friends with me you know what I
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: mean it's like I don't want to bring anything bad
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: into someone else's life and I know that's what he
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: he was he was watching it all happen you know
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: he's watching the podcast end and um yeah I have
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: I have a few friends that I really... What do
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: you mean the podcast end? Oh, with Tig.
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: Oh, yes.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: And he knew, oh, this is happening because of me.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: People hate me so much. People hate me so much
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: they are starting to hate you. And I feel really
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: bad about it. And I don't want that. I don't
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: want that for you. You know, it was very sweet, but.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: I mean, if anything, when people were like, and in
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: the book, like, you know, yelling at saying like, you
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: need to tell your husband and how could you be
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: with that man and blah, blah, blah, blah. And it's like,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: probably at one point there was an, like, well, thank
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: God I have you, Bobby. Like, thank God we have
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: each other because fuck these other people. They obviously weren't real,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: real in my life. Do you imagine if you dumped
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: your husband to go hang out with these other people
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: to like go on a trip to Spain? And then
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: it's like, no, like this is family and this is this.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: And it's like, You're right. This too shall pass. Like
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: who knows where things will be in a couple years.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: And you said that about time. Like I wish I
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: could just skip two years ahead. And I've had that
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: in times in my life too. Or like parenting challenges.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Like can I just see where you are at 25
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: so I can just like stop worrying. Like I don't know.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: But you just have to go through it.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: Right. You have to go through it. You just have
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: to go through it. And you're right. It was really–
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: it was always– I've always been a very– family oriented
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: person it's always it's always.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: No I always remember that because so close to your
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: sister like I am your parents were at that little
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: New Year's Eve party at the Brentwood house like yeah.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: So I it was strange when people were I mean
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: people still some people you know feel like oh you
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: should leave him it's like why because you don't like
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: his politics like that's Oh, that's not what our marriage
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: is about. Yeah.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: And I mean, with the vaccine thing, you know, I
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: don't know if you know, but I fainted on stage.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: I did see that.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: And I thought, finally, I have a viral moment doing
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: stand up. And it absolutely did nothing for my career.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Everybody just hated me because the left thought I was
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: like a plant for the anti-vax and the right thought
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: I was being disrespectful because I said Jesus loves me
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: the most right before I fainted. And they thought Jesus
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: came down and flaked me. And I said, you know,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: I've been Catholic my whole life. Like Jesus and I
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: are good, whatever. But it was one of those things. And,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: you know, but I was like, well, maybe this was
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: meant to be because it did add to the discussion.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Didn't help my career at all, but my career is fine.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: But it didn't, but it was, it, even then I
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: would do interviews and stuff and they would say, well,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: what is it? And I go, look, and I, I
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: don't know, but I did get the booster two weeks
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: before to the day.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: And, and so, and then, you know, and even Chelsea
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: had a situation right before going on stage where she
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: had like a heart thing. And, but you know, she, we,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: whatever she didn't talk about. I didn't talk because people
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: were like, just don't talk like, like it's just going
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: to be banned and you're going to in trouble for
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: even discussing it. And the truth is, I like, I
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: don't know. I just know I've never fainted before. I've
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: never fainted after I'd had every test done. Thank God
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: I'm fine.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: And also I'd say, you know, you don't know how
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: many people felt dizzy but just sat down. Right. Or
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: were sitting down when they felt dizzy. When I felt dizzy,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: I was on stage.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: So there was no way for me to grab or go,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you guys, hold on.
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: I know I have two shows and two meet and greets,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: but I'm seeing dots.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Like, no. So that's why a lot of people, I think,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: you see all those people fainting because they were on camera,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: so they weren't. addressing the fact they don't feel well well.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Because you're like the athletes that was also the problem
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: yeah I mean the athletes were out on the field
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: like going 90 miles an hour yeah and then and
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: then to feel that way right but yeah and it's
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: so it's such a.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: It's so interesting because I'm like why are people mad
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: at you why are people mad at you yeah this
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: is your experience yeah what if for some people it
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: didn't work out for others it did let's just make
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: sure it's safe going forward like what does it matter
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: like I mean, I had to show that I was
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: vaccinated to perform at the clubs. Right. And I was
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: fine with that. Right. I've always been— I never had an
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: issue with anything. With my son, during the Jenny McCarthy time,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: because he was just a little younger than her son,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: I was watching the Oprahs and everything and talking about
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: the vaccines and the connection to autism. And the next day,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: my child didn't look me in the eye. And he
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: was coming on his 18-month— shots and I was like
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: oh my god oh my god for six months I
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: was like I don't know what I'm gonna do I
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: don't know what I'm gonna tell this doctor I don't
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: wake up in the middle of the night I went
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: to the doctor and I'm like I don't know what
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna do about this appointment he's like what are
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: you talking about I'm like I don't know about getting
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: all the shots he goes Drake got all his shots
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: at one at one year oh.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: My god that guy was like what like he had
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: like 15 at one time and luckily he was fine
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: but like so what like that you spread it out
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: or wait or whatever and I don't know if people
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: get mad because they feel like in some way maybe
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: they made the wrong choice and therefore it's their fault.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Or they want to make sure that no matter what
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: their choice was right. Like, again, like who cares?
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Like, who cares? Like we're not, nobody's judging anybody or
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: they shouldn't be.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: So that's what is hard to understand too about, um,
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: why can't we listen to someone's experience without calling them
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: crazy or making it political? Yeah. You fainting on stage
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: has nothing to do with politics. Zero to do with politics.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: It was a moment in time for you. It was
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: a health moment. And that's it.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: So there's something about, you know, the vaccine situation that
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: really has people want to tell other people how they
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: feel about it. They need to tell other people how they,
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: not everybody, of course, but how they, one way or
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: the other.
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Or when people say, Well, you know, I had an
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: uncle who died of COVID. I'm like, yeah, that is
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: really horrible. But why does that matter if your neighbor
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: didn't get it or not? doctored up a card so
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: that they could work. I don't know. I didn't, you know,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: it didn't matter to me. I was like, I don't
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: care if you get it or not. I'm getting it because.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Right, the vaccine.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: For the vaccine. Because for me, I would go out
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: and when it was before the vaccine and I'd wake
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: up in the middle of the night and I'd be like,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: can I still smell my hand lotion? Because they always
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: said you couldn't smell. So I was like, I want the...
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: I just don't want to worry about getting it, you know?
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: So I was happy to get it. And I was
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: happy to get the booster and I was happy to
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: do all the things. And I never even, I was like, whatever.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: But I also respected people that were like, I'm not
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: doing that.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Okay, fine.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: You know? And, you know, and I had jokes about
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: it on the other side too. I'm like, yeah, all
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: these people that are like, I'm not putting a needle
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: in my, and they're like going to get Botox. Like,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, like who cares? Like, but again,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: it's whatever your thing is. So it's just, I just
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: think that, So when I saw the view, so you
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: go on the view, and I'm curious because you've been
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: on the view over the years, I'm sure promoting a
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: million things. And what was the, did you know you
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: were going into this situation or were they hugging you
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: and were sweet? Did they act like it was going
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: to be more about funny stories like we told earlier
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: in this episode or did they, what did they think
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: it was?
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Um well I was told that uh you know that
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: they they were glad that it was coming on which
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: was good um and that they that it wasn't that
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: they weren't going to attack me yeah but then you
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: know what I when I talked to a producer about
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: what the, you know, the segment would look like, it
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: was clear. It was like, oh, okay. They want to
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: talk to you about vaccines. They want to talk to
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: you about Bobby. And it's like, oh, okay. All right.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: You know? So I, so at that point I knew, oh,
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: we're not just, I'm not going to have a good time.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: I'm going to field questions about Bobby. And, and at
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: that point I felt like that's okay like bring it
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: on um and it's it was good timing for me
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: because Bobby's you know been um secretary of HHS for
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: what 10 months now and has accomplished a lot of
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: really great things you know for for the health of
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: America so so I was I was um glad to
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: talk about it and even some of the things that
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: even Even me, even for me, when like when he
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: was during his Senate hearings while he was getting grilled
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: about being secretary and they kept saying, you're not a doctor.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: You are not a doctor. And I the first time
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: I heard that, I thought, oh, no, he's not a doctor.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: This is did they not know he's not a doctor?
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Why is this so important? Is this usually like a
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: surgeon is that has this? you know, this title. And
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: then now, you know, knowing what I know, most of
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: them are not doctors. Our last secretary was not a doctor,
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: was a politician. A lot of them have been politicians, governors.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: There was an economist. You know how many Democratic secretaries
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: of HHS, zero. So it's like, but I believed it too,
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: even during that hearing where I was like, Ooh, he's
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: not a doctor. And then, and then I've just been,
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: like I said, I've been learning so much where it's like,
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: he's not, doesn't need to be a doctor. That's not
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: his role as secretary. So I was sort of, I
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: was ready for those kinds of questions and Really a tax.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Some of them weren't questions. They were just like, your
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: husband's not qualified. Like, was the economist qualified? So I
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: knew going on that show that they were going to
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: come at me. And, you know, I really just wanted
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: to try to connect with them and have a conversation
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Do you imagine, though, too, like if there was a
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: man– who was on a show with a bunch of
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: other men, and his wife was in some type of
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: powerful position, and they're like, tell your wife she's a
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: dumb bitch. I know. That doesn't know anything, and you
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: need to divorce her ass, otherwise you're kicked out of
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: the club. Like, that would never happen. Yeah. And it's
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: just so interesting that, you know, women, like, can judge, like, hey,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: even if you... You know, it doesn't, like, you're married
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: to him and, you know, you do support and obviously
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: believe what he's doing is great. But, like, even if
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you didn't and just stayed silent during these years or whatever,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: what is it anyone's business?
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: You're going to tell your husband of whatever how old
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: he is? Like, no.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: No.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: You're not who's a lawyer who's lived in this life
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: and been around the Kennedy forever and knows about stuff
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: like this and has fought, you know, it's just, yeah,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: what are you supposed to do?
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: It's going to hurt people's feelings. They're going to be
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: mad that you, if you get this job.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: When you guys got in this position in politics and
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: now in the white house, did you have any friends
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: or wayward family members that was like, Hey, Can you
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: help a third cousin out with some shit? Anybody that
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: was like, oh, cousin Cheryl, she can get us what
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: we need.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: She can pull some strings. Yeah. I don't have that.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: I don't have that. But I do have, you know,
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: it's hard because it's health.
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: I have a lot of people that want to tell
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: me their health situations. So that's hard because it's like
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: I hear you.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: And– I can help research with you, but I can't
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: do anything. I don't have a doctor I can call
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: for you. So that's hard. It's not like comedy where
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: it's like, oh, I wrote a script. Can you give
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: it to Spielberg? It's like, no, but give me the script,
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: and if I run into him, I'll try to give
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: it to him. So it's such a serious situation, that part.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: But no, nobody's calling like, oh, can you get me
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: out of a speeding ticket? No, nobody's there.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: Now, I mean, it's hard to say, like, you know,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: have you been blackballed or not been asked to do
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: as many things as you would think? Or maybe you're
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: no longer at the top of the list to play
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: the mom and the whatever. Do you do you have
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: some pretty clear understanding that that might be the case?
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: I think, you know.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: It's a hard thing to say. It is. Because it's
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: an unprovable thing.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: It is.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: You know, it's like when people are like, when I
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: was like, I don't know if I was blackballed, but
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: like I never, you know, got no longer these things
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: weren't happening for me and I just had to accept
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: it because there isn't necessarily a blackball. There's just one
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: person saying no.
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: No, I don't want that person here. No, that's not
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: what I want. Or maybe having her on screen will
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: trigger people at home because she's associated with something else.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Who's associated to somebody else that the world, that half
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: the world hates.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: Right. Which is, which is quite possible.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It's like, it's quite possible.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: I mean, it's, it's, uh, especially I would imagine if
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: you were, if your spouse is a high profile person, that's, uh, Yeah,
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: some people really love and some people really don't. I mean,
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: maybe you're right. It's like, I don't know. I don't
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: know what people are saying behind closed doors, but it's
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: quite possible. But also, I have people calling me, offering
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: me things.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: And are any of those people people that might have
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: been at one time in your position or currently and
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: they're like, don't let this bother you. Like, I've been there.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I wasn't getting nominated for the things. I was blackballed
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: at one time. I was, you know, on that side
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: and had to keep it a secret.
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: I'm going to say yes to that. Right. I mean,
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: I was talking to somebody who very successful is, you know,
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: producing more very successful things and said, yeah. I mean,
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: I basically moved out of L.A. because. people are so mad.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: So was this person still in the closet or no?
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: The closet of their politics? Of politics?
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: I don't think so, but I think they've moved to
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: a place where that doesn't come first.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: So now this person has moved to literally a different
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: city where, you know, people are like, oh, what are
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: you making next? What are you shooting next? And it's not...
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: I don't even... I don't think politics... it comes into
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: it at all. I mean, I've never, I've never been
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: a person to ask anybody about their politics. I don't
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: know what, I have never asked somebody who they voted for.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: The first time I realized, and I had no idea,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: I was so naive or whatever, is I was guest
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: starring on something. It might've been, I can't remember what
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: it was. I didn't have that many guest stars, so whatever.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: And I just remember it was like the third day
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: of the week long thing. And Bush had won or
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: something was going on. I think that was the time
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: we didn't know if it was going to be Bush
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: or Gore, like lasted weeks or whatever. And that's when
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: I was like, oh, everybody feels one way.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: And interesting. Right. Like everybody feels one way and is
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: all voicing that one way. And if anyone didn't feel
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: that way, I, you know, oh. okay you wouldn't say
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: it yeah don't don't say it because it can be
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: interpreted and it can you know stick with you forever
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: and now you have like this label i guess a
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: set of a scarlet letter a it's a scarlet letter
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: r or something i don't know and then it's just
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: and then even you're like no that's not true that's
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: not the way i feel or whatever and it's like
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: they're just trying to like you know it's like a
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: witch hunt literally like a sailor it's like what does
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: it matter and like what do you care and um
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: And then sometimes it's like, oh, that person has the
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: luxury to say what they want, what they feel. Yeah.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: That could be fun. Right. That could be fun to
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: have the luxury to say what I just know that
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: you're so above it. But I kind of feel like
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: with you now, you know, obviously you love acting. It's
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: something you've dreamt and wanted to do your whole life.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: And it took a long time to get there. You know,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: first 10 years here was not, you know, a success story.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: So it's not like overnight, you know, showed up. But
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: is there a part of you at all that's just like, oh, well,
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: fuck you. Like then, you know what? I'll take a
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: little break from it and I'm going to enjoy this
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: part of my life. And like, it'll all be there
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: when I come back. Yeah. And if it, or not,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: or I'll do, or I'll produce my own things or like,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: is there any of that? Like, cause you've already accomplished
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: so much. You've been to all the award shows. You've
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: been in the movies, you've been in the things.
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: So like, yeah, there was a time when I, I,
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: I wasn't ready for change. I didn't want things to change.
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: Like you said, I, I, I worked really hard. I
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: was very focused on my career and I've worked with
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: great people. I've done, you know, really fun projects and
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: I was not ready for that to change. And so
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: when Bobby started running, I was like, I don't know
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: if I'm, this is going to change everything. I don't
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: know how. I don't know if I'm ready. And I
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: talk about that in the book too, right? There are
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: moments in your life where you're like, I'm just not
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: ready for what's about to happen. Can I have a minute?
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: And the universe says, no, you can't. And so it's
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: a lot of, you know, self-reflection and just saying, okay,
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: change is coming. So you either embrace it or you're
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: going to be really unhappy. You're just going to always
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: be unhappy. Yeah. Because you don't know what, you don't
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: know how it's going to work out. But odds are
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: it is not going to work out the way you think.
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know one person who thinks, oh,
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: that's going to work out exactly this way and then
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: it unfolds that way. So I'm at a place now where, yeah,
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: I'm completely fine with however it works out. You know
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: what I mean? It will– I'm producing a film with
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: my ex-husband.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Good.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: And– Having a lot of fun doing it. And whatever
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: is going to unfold is going to unfold. And you're right.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: I have done a lot of things that I dreamed
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: of doing. So that's great. So I don't feel like, oh,
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: my God, I never had the chance to do that
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: one thing. So, you know, if people feel like, and
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: I don't think they do. I'm sure there are individuals.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, I hope she never works
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: again in her life.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: It's like, I will be okay.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: I'm okay. Like, I have a really fun life. I
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: always have, even when I didn't have an acting job,
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: even when I was, you know, 25 and struggling.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: I mean, we have a lot of that in common,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: is that I've enjoyed the journey the whole way. Yeah. And,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: you know, and when I've been sad, I'm grateful that I...
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: knew the reason why. Yeah. I didn't suffer from any
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: kind of like, you know, mental depression or whatever.
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: And it was just very get up and go and
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: be positive and like laugh about it. And I think
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: that's like what we connected and you're very spiritual and
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: you could see in the, in the book. And like
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: I said, a lot of the, what do you call it?
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: Prayer manifestation universe, the way things lined up is like, yeah,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: very intriguing as we get to this age of like
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: oh my god you know.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: Isn't that interesting because that happens yes that happens so
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: that thing could happen.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: Right exactly and like the lack of then where you're
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: like oh my god my you know my regrets are
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: minimal and my regrets are just like oh I should
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: have gone to that wedding or whatever and but they're
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: not you know they're not huge they're not the big
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: the regrets of yesteryear you're like are no longer a
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: regret because you're like oh if that hadn't exactly what
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: you're saying um you know, and with, yeah, with everything
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: of what you're doing now. And, and like, I do
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: want to say like, now I was always intrigued by
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: the Kennedys. I watched every Lifetime movie about Jackie O.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: I was obsessed with JFK Jr. Like, you know, I
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: like just so intrigued by it all. Like, and I want,
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: one of my questions was, you know, was that you?
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Cause some people say, oh, Meghan Markle said Harry who?
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Is he kind? You know, and they're like, you knew
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: who Harry was. You had Diana's book by your bed
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: in college. What was your relationship of knowing the history
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: of the Kennedy family as far as just pop culture knowledge?
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: No, I really didn't know anything other than what I'd
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: learned in school.
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: So, you know, I knew John Kennedy, the president. I
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: barely knew Robert Kennedy was the attorney general.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: Also, never.
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: never showed up on my radar. I was never a
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: person that was where we'd sit around and talk about Jackie.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: I just don't know. I didn't know anything about them. And, um,
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: I know it's, you know, it's probably worked to my advantage.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: It's cause I, I just remember that was my mom's.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: That's why my mom's, I remember my mom said when
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: she married my dad, she was like, that was like
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: the first time she voted. They voted different. She was
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: voted for. Kennedy and he voted for Nixon and she
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: was like, I don't know if this marriage is going
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: to work. Clearly it did. It's not going to work.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: You know, we're together until they die. You could do that.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: With your spouse.
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: And it wouldn't be this like thing.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: It's like, okay, well now this, okay, my guy didn't win,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: like whatever. Yeah. And it just doesn't feel like that
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: for a lot of people.
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: So you weren't all, you weren't the person that was
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: reading all the stuff.
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: Not at all. Not at all. I didn't know. I
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: really didn't know. It just seemed like a far away,
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: you know, people far away doing something on a beach
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: or something. It's like, that's not my life.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: And how is your daughter's relationship with her stepfather?
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: It's really good. I mean, there definitely have been times
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: that were hard. Because I don't know that many kids
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: want their parent to run for president. You know? Because
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: it's so out of your control. Yeah. I mean, I
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: felt like that as a wife.
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: It's so out of my control. This isn't my life.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: I'm not saying I want to run for president.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: Are people cruel to her?
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: You know, I think once in a while somebody online
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: will say something.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: Everyone can be brave online.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: Yes. But in real life, I mean, she's such a lovely, smart,
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: funny girl that I don't think I've never seen anybody
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: be mean to her. I mean, people aren't mean to
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: me either. They're mean to Bobby.
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: You said you've been in public where like and you
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: said the demographic of people that come and tell them
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: to fuck you are middle aged.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: White women.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Yeah. It's.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: And I'm going to get one on, I'm going to
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: get one on camera one of these days. I got to,
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: and I can't.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: So you'll just be like eating, like enjoying a Chinese
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: chicken salad.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: He's having his, you know, lean meat.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: Or whatever he eats.
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: Yes, yes. And then I heard the sauerkraut thing. That
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: was very funny. I have heard that sauerkraut and things
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: like that is really like a good diuretic for everybody.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: But anyway, so he's into eating that. So he brings
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: that with him sometimes. Yes. You guys are just having
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: a meal and someone just comes up. And what does
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: he do? Just smile? What does he say?
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: Just sits there and listens. And it does not have
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: the effect that the person is hoping it will.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: Because they end up looking crazy. And, I mean, it's
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: kind of comical.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: Because when they walk away, you're like, holy shit. Did
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: everybody see that? But it's, you know, sometimes... Yeah, I
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: think I say in the book that we were at
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: some restaurant and some woman said something on her way
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: out and nobody even looked up from dinner. They're just like, well,
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: there goes the crazy lady. So it's weird.
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: It's strange. And I don't think people realize you've been
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: married since 2014. Yeah, we've been married for a long time.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: For 11 years. And so when the.
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: Digital scandal of this girl saying that she was interviewing him,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: your husband, and there was flirtation going on. And it
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: was very weird how it came about. I was suspect
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: to how it came out because it was like her husband,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: who she's divorcing, said, went to her boss who said,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: I saw this weird thing. And, you know, and it's
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: the height of.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Well, the election was happening in two months.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Bobby's appearing dangerous to... possibly be successful in this situation. And,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: but what was that like? I mean, when you, when
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: you had to wake up to that latest.
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: Thing, I was, uh, I mean, by that point, you know,
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: he'd been running for a year and a half. He was,
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: he had, um, endorsed a Donald Trump and people were
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: going crazy. People were going crazy already. So there were
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: already so many stories. So many headlines that were just...
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: You learn to not even pay attention to them. But
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: that one, I was in Italy with my girls. And
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: then this... story breaks and I'm like, I, I, I can't,
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: I can't hear one more. This is too much. This
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: felt like too much. I was just like, it's such
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: a circus. Yeah. That running for president is such a circus. And,
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: you know, election day was November 5th.
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: And, And you were in Europe with your daughter and
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: your stepdaughter.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: My stepdaughter, yeah.
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: I love that you say my girls and my children,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: and I'm a stepmother too, and I refer to my
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: daughter as my daughter. She calls me mom. Like, you know,
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: it's all lovely, and I love that they're close too.
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: But yeah, I see. So you were just like... I
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: was just like a kid.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: You all sound crazy. That's how it felt.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: And I.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: You know, I stayed with my daughters and we had
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: a good time. And then when I got back, I
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: was just when I got back, it was just like
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: a stop down with Bobby. Just like, tell me everything.
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: What is going on? And then, you know, we got
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: to the truth of what was going on. And then
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: that felt like.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: Oh, OK.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: OK.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: And what what do you think is the truth? That
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: it was like a setup thing?
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: You know, I'm not the, I couldn't know this person.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: I don't know this person. That's a question for somebody else.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I got it.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: But everything about it was, it's a lot of, like
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: you were saying, even to try to get to the
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: bottom of it, it just turns into a strange rabbit
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: hole of, Yeah. This thing happened. This person said this thing.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: And then it just gets exhausting.
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: And I'm just like, I can't. I'm not interested.
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: Now, has there been any like holiday party of a
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: celebrity person you've worked with that you've been invited to
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: every year? And then like last year, you just like
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: didn't hear. And then you opened up Instagram and it
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: was still going on. And you're like, oh, it's gone
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: for the last nine years. I wonder what happened to
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: my invite.
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: Checking my mailbox. Like, it's got to be in here. No,
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: I don't have that. But listen, yeah, I do have
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: friends that... I have, you know, two friends from the
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: Sunday company that I've been friends with for this long
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: and they're not talking to me. And it's like, okay.
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: Okay, you'll tell me after. I'll tell you after. Well,
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: I have to tell you one last funny thing before
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: we close.
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: So.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: When I was at Chelsea, you know, like I said,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: we're busy. I don't live in your neighborhood. I don't
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: see you, but like I love for you and everything.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: And I get this email to go to your birthday party.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: And I literally just told my friend Kate Casey, I go,
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: I'm interviewing Cheryl and she's a great podcaster too. And
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: I go, I don't know. I'm going to ask her
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: because until I read this part in your book, I, okay,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: so this is what happened.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: I get an invitation to go to Cheryl's birthday party.
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: And it seemed like it was like a big year
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: or something. And it was a pool party barbecue, bring
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: your favorite exotic animal. So I thought it was Cheryl
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: just being funny, but I thought it's going to be
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: a beautiful pool party in this house in Brentwood. And
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: of course I want to go because I'm not hanging
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: out with this side of Hollywood as much. And I
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: want to like reconnect with the growling type people. And
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: oh my God, I'll see all the important people that
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: might say, oh, Heather would be good for that. Okay.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: You know, she's not in the 818. She's over here
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: looking cute. So anyway, I was like, and then like
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: shortly after this email comes and it's like, my daughter
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: hacked my email. This party is not happening, whatever. And
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: I was like, oh, and I remember thinking, how old
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: is that daughter? Like, how could she do this?
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: And so then time went on and I have to
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: tell you, I convinced myself that there was somebody else
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: that my email is heatherdebias at hotmail.com. I've had it
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: since before I was married. I have other emails. But
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: that's where it came. And I go, I wonder if
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: she had a friend named Heather Debbins or whatever. And
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: somehow she invited me and she didn't really mean to
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: invite me. I really did think that until I read
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: it in the book last night.
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: That is so crazy.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: And I'm sitting at like 11 at night and I'm like,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: oh my God, I really was.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: Invited.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: Well, I wasn't. I was invited by your daughter. You
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: never had the party. But I'm like, it wasn't a mistake.
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: It wasn't a mistake.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: That's so funny.
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: But like how you just... Get in your hat. But
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: I still was like, I still love Cheryl. I'm still
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: going to ask her to come on Juicy Scoop. I
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: still support her.
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it didn't make me go, oh, fuck you, whatever.
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: That is so crazy. And then I still also.
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: Wondered because people were saying, oh, Cheryl and Tig's show
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: is so funny. And at one time they tried to
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: call you or something. You had a phone number. And
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: I was like, oh. And then I listened to it
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: and Tig was like, Heather's not relevant. Something like that.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: She's like, nobody might like you're the average person wouldn't
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: know who Heather McDonald is or something like that. And
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I remember I just heard it and I was like,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: you know, I know I'm not on a TV show.
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: I know I'm not, you know, at the level of
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: that part. But I was like, I do fucking pretty
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: well for myself. And I was like, okay. So then
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: when someone was like, no, you really need to call
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: into their show. I was like, no, I think they
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: might be like, like mocking my, my pod, like being like,
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: you know, like, I don't know. And I know, and
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: I didn't really let it get too much to me,
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: which is why I was like, when I saw your
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: book and I want you to come on.
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: Because we were talking, there was some documentary that I
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: knew that you had a connection to her.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: And I was like, oh my God, we've got to
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: call Heather. But I don't remember what happened. I think
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: I tried to call.
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: You, no?
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: No, you did. People said it was funny and I just, whatever,
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: didn't see it.
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: Oh, but like Tig was.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: Probably just saw, like, you know, if I have your number,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: it's probably just 310-whatever. I, like, didn't have it in
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: my thing because it had been so long.
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: I was in no way mocking you. I was just like,
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: Heather would know.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: No, and when I heard it, it wasn't you. It
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: was kind of... And I was like, you know, like, whatever. Like, I,
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: you know, like, I know, like, there's times where I'm like,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: I think sometimes people see me as like, oh, that's,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: that's that crazy bitch that talks about housewives, whatever, you know?
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: And I'm like, but I know like my life is
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: great and I know like what I've done, but I
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: was just sort of like, okay, you know, like whatever.
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: But I, but still, I, I still always knew you were.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I always knew you and I knew how sweet you
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: were and I knew what you did for your nephew.
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: I wouldn't do that to anybody but especially you.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: People don't know the terrible stuff that you always did.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: Your nephew had cerebral palsy. You were so involved in
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: that and I remember seeing it and all of that.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: I remember when Ken Polk died and the stuff that
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: you know, we put together and that you were a
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: big part of his memorial. And you've just always been
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: that nice person, you know, that said, I was like,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: so I was just kind of like, Oh, I think
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: that was just whatever it was. And I'm so glad
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: I didn't let it get to me to the point
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: where I was like, not, you know, but I was
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: a little confused by it, but I wasn't like, well, Hey,
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: you know, we hadn't been in touch on, on the
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: way that we were 20 years ago. Yeah. But I
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: was still really happy for your journey.
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: We're having a truth circle. First of all, I would
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: never do that to you. I would never. I think
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: you are amazing and I'm really proud of you for
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: what you've created, who you are. I mean, you've created
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: something really special and I think it's unbelievable. And when I,
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: because I did send you that, um, When I saw
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: the picture of the women smelling people's armpits.
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, my God, this makes me
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: think of Heather. And I sent it to you, but
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: you never responded.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: I never saw it.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: Oh, because I was like.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: I never saw it until I wrote you and said, oh,
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: my God, you have a book coming out. You have
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: to come on my show. Well, it's funny. And come
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: before it comes out.
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: Well, Heather, because I was like, when I sent that
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: to you, it wasn't that long ago. No, I looked.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: And when I was going through the stuff, I was like, oh, fuck,
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: I missed this.
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, Heather's turned.
- 1:47:55Speaker 5: Oh no.
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: That's what I thought.
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: I was like, oh, she's not speaking to me.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: Oh, look at us.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: But, but just, but just to be, because also in
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: this business, you always wonder like, what was it? You know,
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: like I always say when people go, I don't know
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: if I flipped my hair in someone's face in an
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: elevator in 1998 and they've hated me ever since. And
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: they could. And then sometimes it's something bigger. And sometimes
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: it's just a miscommunication.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: A mis-DM, a whatever. Right, right.
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: A misunderstanding.
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: Someone's relaying to me what they, like, heard on the show,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: What they thought they heard. Yeah, and that's what I
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: always hate.
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: Not when people say they talked about you. Sometimes I
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: don't bother to listen. But I go and listen before.
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: And then I go, oh, God, they weren't dissing me. Yeah. Like,
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: who cares? Everyone has a podcast. We all talk. I
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: heard what you said about me on your podcast is, like,
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: the name of my next book. Like, everyone talks about
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: each other now. A lot of times we talk. Yeah.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: We used to talk behind people's backs. Now we just
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: put a mic and fucking let it rip. Yeah. No,
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: I would never. And I felt really badly like watching
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: that view thing. And I felt that you came off great.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: And I just, I, you know, and I admire like
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: to the point where you're like, you know what? Enough.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: Because so many of us in this business and during
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: this time have like cowered and has been like, oh,
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: I guess, you know, I can't.
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you can't. I don't want to say anything
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: because- This business is hard enough.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: You can't give people a reason to say no to you.
- 1:49:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: You learn that early as an actor.
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: Don't be late. Know your lines. Take direction.
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: Have a good attitude. Don't give people a reason to
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: not cast you, to not hire you. So, you know,
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: there is that going on. And like you said, you
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: can feel it.
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: Like if somebody says, I remember after Donald Trump won,
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: the first time, and I was in a green room
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: with a bunch of actors. They were all saying, you know,
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: I can't believe it. And one guy said, oh yeah,
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: I voted for Trump. And it was like whiplash. Everybody
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: looked and like, and everybody stopped talking to this person.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: And I said, I said, that's, I said, why did
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: you vote? You know, we, and I had a conversation
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: with him because I thought it was interesting and interesting
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: that he was perfectly at ease with saying that when it,
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: He just created a huge reaction from everybody. I thought
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: the whole situation was, you know, eye-opening. I had no idea.
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: I honestly had no idea there was that.
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: Like I said, I've lived in L.A. my whole life,
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: and I didn't really understand it until I started to work.
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: And then I remember someone saying, my friend had a
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: husband who was a director and he was a Mormon.
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: And I went to her house and she had a
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: big bottle of champagne. She goes, here, do you want this?
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: And she goes, every time my husband gets a job
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: directing his agent sends him a big bottle of champagne.
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: And I go, why doesn't he know that he's Mormon?
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: And he goes, she's like, no, and don't ever tell anybody.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: And don't, you know, and I'm like, what? Like, this
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: is so weird. Like that you're like pretending like to
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: be this other person. And so I'm like, okay, so, um, Yeah,
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: and I thought it was like a joke. Like I
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: thought it was people being dramatic when they talked about like, oh,
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: there's a secret group and da-da-da and keep your mouth shut.
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, come on, who cares, you know?
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: And then it proved to be true. And then it's like,
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: you know, no matter what you did or said, they
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: just are trying to, you know. And so then I
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: was just like, you know what? And so then with
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: this show, there was a day in 2016 where I'm like,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: I'm just never going to talk. And it was hard
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: to come up with topics sometimes that were not political.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: There was some funny-ass shit that happened that I would
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: have loved to have talked about making fun of all
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: the different sides. And I just was like, I'm not
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: going to do this because I just want this to
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: be the escape of... And so then even with having
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: you on, I go, I know this is going to
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: be a controversial thing. And I'm like, finally... Fuck off.
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: I don't care. Yeah. You're my friend. The book is great.
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: Very interesting. Interesting life. I hope you enjoy living in
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: both places. I hope another book comes out after. I
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: think this could be a great movie, like, about your life.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: I think it could be a really interesting movie. And,
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: you know, and whatever happens a couple years from now, like...
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: We'll always have each other. We'll always have each other.
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: We'll always have Sunday. We'll always have the Sky Bar.
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: We'll always have the Sky Bar. You'll always have your
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: family and, like, the rest of it. Yeah. Who cares? Yeah.
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: It's going to come and go.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: And things, like, happen. There's such big things, you know. Oh,
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: my God, we'll never get over this. And then, like,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: sometimes you just keep your mouth shut. A week later,
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: they've all moved on to something else. It is true. Yeah.
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: It's true.
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: I had a group of haters, and then I stopped
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: addressing them. And then I realized they went over to
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: this other girl I know. And I saw her being like, rah, rah.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, God, they're the same ones I— literally,
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: I'm like, they're the same ones I've had. And they
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: went over to you. Just like— But it is hard.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: And when you see it, it's hard to always be
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: like that. And it takes a lot to just go
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: and enjoy yourself.
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: And anyway, the book is very good and I can't
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: wait to finish it. And you talk about some really
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: profound things. And oh, the last thing I was going
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: to say is I also think it was interesting. You're
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: raised Catholic. I remember that about us. I, too. And
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: of course, the Kennedys are Catholic. Yeah. And I also
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: thought Ethel must have liked that.
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess. We hardly talked about religion, though.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: But even if you're not practicing in the sense that
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: you're going to Mass every day, it's like there's something,
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: there's an understanding. Like a shared value. There's like an
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: understanding of that kind of Catholic guilt that makes you
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: sometimes go.
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: Fall in line.
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: Yeah, or feel guilty.
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: Feel guilty.
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: We have to take Marie to the Sky Bar. I
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: still feel very guilty.
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: That is so funny. I'm going to tell her that
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: you said that.
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: I feel really bad. I know. And when I saw
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: her years ago and she was telling me like all
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: the stuff she was doing and she was like working
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: reality TV. And I was like, oh, good. She's not
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: mad about the sky bar.
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: No. That's so funny. You know what that reminds me of?
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: One time, this is a long time ago. I went
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: on Jimmy Kimmel. Long, long time ago. And I made
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: a joke, you know, about his toupee. And because I
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: didn't think he wore a toupee. I was just, you know,
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: making a joke, like his hair looked funny or something.
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: And then when I got home, I thought, oh, my God,
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: what if he does wear a toupee? And I just
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: said that on live television. And I worried about it
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: until the next time I went on his show. And
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: then during commercial break, I leaned over and said, I'm
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: so sorry that I said that about your toupee. And
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: he goes, I don't wear a toupee. I said, oh.
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: That's what I thought. But then I said that joke
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: and he's like, I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: He said, have you been carrying this around for years?
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: I said, I have.
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: I felt so badly. I didn't want to hurt your feelings.
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: He's like, Cheryl, let it go. I don't have a toupee.
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: Nobody cares. No, but we're just so similar like that.
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: Like that there's a weird thing that'll just kind of
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: haunt me. Like that was not nice.
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going to forgive you right now.
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: I would have said the models had a plus one.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: Then both the roommates could have come and they could
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: have squeezed on the back of my Toyota Celica. Oh
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: my God. Everybody, the book is unscripted. You're going to
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: go and pre-order right now so that you're going to

- 1:56:05Speaker 1: on Tuesday. It'll make the bestseller list the following Tuesday,
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: you'll know.
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: We'll see, we'll see. It doesn't matter.
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: I think it will. And because it's funny, it's intriguing,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: it's spiritual, it's sad. There's some very sad parts. And yeah,
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: I loved it. And thank you for coming and staying
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: for so long. Thank you, Heather. And everybody, follow Cheryl on... Right?
