- 0:03Happy Daytona 500 Sunday. Well, if I'm ever going to do a
- 0:10coffee with Kenny, today is the day.
- 0:14This is the biggest NASCAR race we have of the year.
- 0:20Did you know? Did you know this is the 67th
- 0:24running of the Daytona 500 and the first winner of the Daytona
- 0:31500 was Lee Petty. Lee Petty, the father of Richard
- 0:39Petty, the grandpa of Kyle Petty.
- 0:44Did you know last year the Daytona 500 winner was who was
- 0:51it? Everybody.
- 0:53It was a Hendrick driver, William Byron.
- 1:01So I just got done telling you who was the first winner of the
- 1:05Daytona 500 at the racetrack at the Daytona Motor Speedway.
- 1:12Not the beach, Not the beach. Listen, it's early in the
- 1:17morning. Don't don't start, OK?
- 1:20You're already on your phone. I'm going to prove him wrong.
- 1:25It's a calm down, everybody. It's a nice, nice morning.
- 1:29We are celebrating the Daytona 500.
- 1:33When I was a kid, we'd say it's the Daytona 500 by STPSTP.
- 1:44Is the racer's edge OK? Can you respond right here and
- 1:55tell me how many Daytona 5 hundreds I have raced in?
- 2:01I don't know. All I can tell you is this.
- 2:06I can tell you some stories. My very first Daytona 500, I'll
- 2:13never forget it. What was it, 93?
- 2:18I think it was 1993 and I'm getting ready to run the race
- 2:24and I'll never forget I was, you know, starting towards the rear
- 2:29of the field. I qualified my way in at that
- 2:33time. It was the twin 120 fives.
- 2:37And I'll never forget Mark Martin.
- 2:42He looked at me and he's very serious and Mark Martin, said
- 2:44Herman, 'cause you know, we were tight.
- 2:47We came out of ASA together. Of course, Mark is a little
- 2:51older than me, made it to Daytona, made it to NASCAR
- 2:54before me. And he said, Herman, your goal
- 3:00should be to finish in the top 20.
- 3:03That's what he told me. Mark Martin in my first Daytona
- 3:06500. Hey, you know what?
- 3:09I just told you something I'm I'm thinking about.
- 3:11I want to go back just a minute actually.
- 3:15Actually, I made it to NASCAR before Mark Martin 1984.
- 3:25I don't know. Did Mark make it?
- 3:26Did NASCAR before me? I'm trying to figure that out.
- 3:30His first NASCAR Cup race was Nashville.
- 3:34Think he said QuickTime. I think Mark, I think respond
- 3:40right here. Let's have fun together.
- 3:42This is not a competition. I'm going to say it again.
- 3:46It's a happy day. This is not a competition coffee
- 3:51with Kenny as all of us together, we're one big old
- 3:55happy family. Respond right here.
- 3:58Was Mark Martin's first NASCAR race at the Nashville
- 4:03Fairgrounds and was he on pole? Did Mark Martin set QuickTime?
- 4:09What I'm thinking though is in 1984 I became a NASCAR Cup crew
- 4:16chief for the Levi Garrett team. But way before then I was a crew
- 4:23member with Rusty and we did a one off.
- 4:26We went down to Daytona to qualify for the Daytona 500.
- 4:30Like 19811982. Rusty wrecked violently in the
- 4:36Twin 120 fives. See if you can find any pictures
- 4:41and show them right here. In the Twin 125 Rusty flipped
- 4:47violently off at turn 2. I remember Rusty was racing
- 4:54Richard Petty and Rick Mast. Rick Mast was in the no not Rick
- 4:58Mast Rick. God I forgot his name.
- 5:04But anyway Rusty was racing Richard Petty and the number 4
- 5:08Kodak car. Not not Ernie and not Sterling,
- 5:12but they got into Rusty and the rear spunning out coming off
- 5:15tattoo and Rusty flipped violently.
- 5:19So who was that driver? Rick, somebody respond right
- 5:26here. These are some of my Daytona 500
- 5:29memories. 1984 was my first Daytona 500 memory as a, you
- 5:41know, just as on the starting field as a crew chief.
- 5:46So many great memories for me for from Daytona.
- 5:50What are your Daytona memories? Respond right here.
- 5:54Did you go down as a family? I did.
- 6:00Tell me your Daytona 500 memories right here.
- 6:03My Daytona 500 memory Dad proudly.
- 6:09My dad Russ Wallace. We lost dad.
- 6:12Dad's gone now. He died October 30th, 2011 of a
- 6:17massive heart attack. Miss my dad every day I pray
- 6:22about my dad every time I get in my dirt car and get ready to
- 6:25start. So I got a picture of my dad
- 6:29right there in my dirt car every time every year a picture of my
- 6:32mom and dad and me. But one of my Daytona 500
- 6:37memories was dad. My dad was a proud man, so he
- 6:40bought a Ford Lincoln Town Car. Big, old, beautiful, brand new.
- 6:47It was yellow. And here we are.
- 6:50We take off out of Arnold MO Mom mom, if you're listening to
- 6:54this, you'll remember. So Rusty and Mike were fighting
- 6:59all the time. They fought the whole damn trip.
- 7:03So we leave Arnold, MO and we take off for speed weeks and I'm
- 7:10maybe I'm 810 years old, maybe. And Rusty and Mike were in that
- 7:15big back seat. We're we're, you know, it's a
- 7:181516 hour trip going through Atlanta.
- 7:23We love racing. We're local racers at this time.
- 7:26And I ended up the whole trip being up in the that thing that
- 7:31that Lincoln Town Car was so big that I was up in the back glass.
- 7:36That's how much room there was. You know, there's a shelf behind
- 7:40the back seat and in the glass and Rusty Mike just fought their
- 7:44whole ass off this constantly. Of course, Mom and Dad were up
- 7:48front. We get to Daytona and that was
- 7:52the race that I believe. Who was it?
- 7:57I know Benny Parsons won because I was it the race that they all
- 8:05wrecked at the end and Benny Parsons won in the number 72
- 8:10King's Row car respond right here.
- 8:13Benny Parsons was your Daytona 500 winner in the number 72 gold
- 8:19and white because I built the model King's Row.
- 8:23I maybe that was a fireplace company.
- 8:26So today we're celebrating the Daytona 500 and I encourage you
- 8:33all to be happy. I encourage you all to
- 8:36understand that this has been the best start start.
- 8:40This has been the best start in NASCAR in 20 years.
- 8:45Viewership is way up. We did a Kenny Wallace show on
- 8:50Saturday evening. It was very good on Thursday
- 8:58night. Listen to this On Thursday night
- 9:01we had 1.8 million more viewers that we've had in years.
- 9:10I think it was the biggest Thursday night viewership for
- 9:14the Duels, 1.8 million more up 1.8 million.
- 9:20So no, 1.8 million people watched.
- 9:23Excuse me, 1.8 million people watched the Duels that that's a
- 9:29big deal setter. More people watched qualifying
- 9:34on Wednesday night. Every single race has been
- 9:39unbelievable. They have ended with massive
- 9:43wrecks coming to the checkered flag.
- 9:46Hey, listen, you can't blame that on NASCAR.
- 9:50Blame that on the drivers. That's the drivers wanting to
- 9:53win so bad. The duels were won by Bubba
- 9:58Wallace and Austin Syndrich side by side.
- 10:02Throw the caution because they're wrecking.
- 10:05The truck race was unbelievable. Reckon the Xfinity race was
- 10:15unbelievable. They were wrecking every, every
- 10:19race. Hey, be ready.
- 10:23Be ready, everybody. The Daytona 500 should end up
- 10:28under caution whether we like it or not.
- 10:31It's not NASCAR's fault. We've done, we've done been down
- 10:34that road. We've done been down that road.
- 10:37Once they take the white flag, the race is over.
- 10:41And if you think that is bad, just remember this for almost
- 10:45over 40 years, every single NASCAR race, even in the good
- 10:49old days, everybody in the good old days, every NASCAR race
- 10:54ended under caution. If there was 4 to go and the
- 10:58caution came out, they'd go around that mean 3 laps ago.
- 11:03They'd go around that mean two laps ago, they'd go around mean
- 11:07one lap to go and they'd be under caution for 45 years and
- 11:12they'd come around under real slow pace and they'd throw the
- 11:16checkered flag. So be ready.
- 11:19These drivers want to win the Daytona 500 really bad.
- 11:23It most likely going to end at speed.
- 11:27At speed. They're going to be wrecking off
- 11:29at Turn 4. They trained us.
- 11:32They're going to be coming off at Turn 4.
- 11:34They're going to wreck their ass off and they're going to be.
- 11:36And they're the cautions coming out and we've got cameras and
- 11:41that's why we're going to watch everyone.
- 11:44You know the rules going into it.
- 11:46We know the rules. The Xfinity race ended under
- 11:50caution. Jesse love, congratulations.
- 11:54Justin Allgar turn left and all hell broke loose.
- 11:58Truck race, every race, every race they wrecked their ass off.
- 12:05So TuneIn today it's going to be it's going to be exciting and
- 12:10this is Daytona and these these race car drivers are going to do
- 12:15whatever it takes to win the Daytona 500.
- 12:20This is our biggest race. Happy Sunday, everybody.
- 12:24Tell me your Daytona 500 story right here.
