Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This immadiated podcast. All right, welcome to Meat Eater Trivia.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I am your trivia curator, Spencer new Hearth, host, trivia host.
- 0:19Speaker 1: You're okay with me, saying host trivia host, Spencer new Hearth. Now,
- 0:24Speaker 1: if you're not familiar, this is trivia. You're not going
- 0:26Speaker 1: to get from Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit or any barn
- 0:28Speaker 1: grill trivia. These are born on a meat Eater's four
- 0:31Speaker 1: verticals which you're hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. And like
- 0:35Speaker 1: we tease at the end of the last episode, we
- 0:38Speaker 1: have a big announcement. Steve, what is the big announcement? Oh,
- 0:41Speaker 1: we're staging up our donations. Yeah, so now when you win,
- 0:45Speaker 1: we'll send five hundred bucks. Because see now I don't
- 0:49Speaker 1: if people notice. Now we're able to it's our trivia
- 0:52Speaker 1: thing has taken off almost we're able to sell ads
- 0:54Speaker 1: against it. Yeah. Previously the winners just attack on there's
- 0:58Speaker 1: one hundred bucks. Previously the way the tree it would
- 1:00Speaker 1: get to choose where one hundred dollars donation would go
- 1:02Speaker 1: to a conservation organization. We kind of pulled that out
- 1:04Speaker 1: of our arses. Yeah, yep, it was a last minute
- 1:08Speaker 1: email the night before we did it the first time,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and we are now up to five hundred dollars, so
- 1:14Speaker 1: the pressure is on. Yeah, it's more popular. The money
- 1:17Speaker 1: you'll get more. It's right, it's gonna be like really
- 1:19Speaker 1: like tense. We have played six times so far. Steve
- 1:24Speaker 1: has won three times, Brody who was not here, has
- 1:27Speaker 1: won twice, clay As one once, and Seth is the
- 1:29Speaker 1: newest member of the club who won the last time
- 1:31Speaker 1: we played. You know what, man, here's a couple things
- 1:34Speaker 1: I think we need. We need some kind of Winners
- 1:36Speaker 1: Club Member billion. Oh yeah, we need t shirt like
- 1:40Speaker 1: a patch, a patch Winners Club member billion, yeah, that
- 1:44Speaker 1: you can collect. And then I think that we need
- 1:45Speaker 1: to have on the little intro with the no counch
- 1:48Speaker 1: for old men stuff in it. I think that someone
- 1:50Speaker 1: in the end needs to say a game on Suckers
- 1:52Speaker 1: to end it. Yeah, I'll say it, so we have
- 1:56Speaker 1: I don't think I'll have my daughter do it. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I'll probably have my daughter say game on Suckers. Do
- 2:03Speaker 1: you ever hear my voicemail that my daughter leaves yes,
- 2:05Speaker 1: oh yeah, yes, the side of my dad that's perfect.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Dailed it now. I'm not convinced it's out ches here.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Now we have some housekeeping from last time we played
- 2:22Speaker 1: Oh no, this is what he means that he means
- 2:25Speaker 1: to say things that Spencer screwed up. A few episodes ago,
- 2:29Speaker 1: I asked the room what five states west of the
- 2:32Speaker 1: Mississippi River don't have a national park. The answer was Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and Louisiana. Corbin Newman rode in to let me know
- 2:40Speaker 1: that Nebraska actually gained a National Historical Park in twenty
- 2:43Speaker 1: twenty one when the Homestead National Monument of America was
- 2:47Speaker 1: redesignated as the Homestead National Historical Park. But this doesn't
- 2:51Speaker 1: change the answer because the National Park Service technically considers
- 2:56Speaker 1: national parks and national historical parks is two different things.
- 2:59Speaker 1: According to them, national historical parks are commonly areas of
- 3:03Speaker 1: greater physical extent in complexity than national historical sites, so
- 3:08Speaker 1: it'd be closer like a monument or a national historical
- 3:11Speaker 1: site than it would be a national park. Kind of
- 3:13Speaker 1: a non announcement there. Well, he wasn't the only one
- 3:19Speaker 1: who wanted right. You felt like you had to address it.
- 3:22Speaker 1: In that same episode, I asked the room to name
- 3:24Speaker 1: a state with the brook trout as their state fish.
- 3:27Speaker 1: About a dozen people rote in to correct me that
- 3:29Speaker 1: North Carolina was wrong because their state fish is actually
- 3:32Speaker 1: the red fish. But what those folks were missing is
- 3:34Speaker 1: that North Carolina actually has two state fish, a state
- 3:37Speaker 1: saltwater fish being the redfish, and a state freshwater fish
- 3:41Speaker 1: being the Southern Appalachian brook trout. You've been new heart.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Thank you, Phil, Phil play the sounder. We are now
- 3:51Speaker 1: onto Meat Eater Trivia. Look, I need to know what
- 3:56Speaker 1: I stand to win everything, Just tend to win everything.
- 4:11Speaker 1: All right, here we go the first question. The topic
- 4:14Speaker 1: is mountain men, and like every time we play, this
- 4:16Speaker 1: is going to be multiple choice. This first great question
- 4:20Speaker 1: comes to us via Meat Eater's own graphics guy Hunter Spencer.
- 4:23Speaker 1: If you have a question you think is right for
- 4:25Speaker 1: meat eat Trivia, you can send it to Trivia at
- 4:28Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. Did he submit online or
- 4:30Speaker 1: does call just through slack O. Merriwether, Lewis, William Clark,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Joseph Meek, John Coulter, Jim Bridger, William Henry Ashley, and
- 4:39Speaker 1: James Beckworth. We're all born in what state? We have? Merriwether, Lewis,
- 4:46Speaker 1: William Clark, Joseph Meek, John Coulter, Jim Bridger, William, Henry Ashley,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and James Beckworth. We're all born in what state? Is it? Ohio, Virginia,
- 4:59Speaker 1: Illinois or New York. I want you to note that
- 5:02Speaker 1: I had it written down before you offered the well done, Ohio, Virginia,
- 5:09Speaker 1: Illinois or New York. Again it is Maryweather. Luis, you
- 5:13Speaker 1: gotta hide your board from me better. I'm not stealing
- 5:15Speaker 1: from William Clark, Joseph Meek, John Coulter, Jim Bridger, William
- 5:19Speaker 1: Henry Ashley, and James Beckworth. Now which one of these men?
- 5:23Speaker 1: Was it Steve that gave it away for you? Or
- 5:26Speaker 1: do you not want to tell? Two of them? Two
- 5:27Speaker 1: of them? Okay? Does everybody have an answer? Three of them?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Virginia,
- 5:36Speaker 1: Tom saying Virginia, Virginia, Virginia, Karen saying New York, Chester
- 5:41Speaker 1: saying Ohio, and Seth saying New York. Steve was right.
- 5:45Speaker 1: The correct answer is Virginia. Can I tell them how
- 5:47Speaker 1: they could have known that? Yeah? Oh, and I'll tell
- 5:50Speaker 1: you Jim Beckworth a freed slave. So you know it's
- 5:53Speaker 1: gonna be a slave state. Another way you maybe could
- 5:56Speaker 1: have known that is Hunter Spencer's from Virginia, so he
- 5:59Speaker 1: wrote any question about Virginia, or you could have read
- 6:02Speaker 1: Master Trappers. Yeah, or Tom's gonna be a formidable foe
- 6:08Speaker 1: right now. Uh. Another thing is like all that, like
- 6:11Speaker 1: you know, the Lewis and Clark, that was their whole,
- 6:14Speaker 1: Like everybody was from Virginia. Yeah, like anybody involved anything
- 6:19Speaker 1: from a political end of ship, it was all from Virginia. Amazingly,
- 6:22Speaker 1: Merriweather Lewis, William Clark, and John Coulter, we're all born
- 6:25Speaker 1: within about ninety miles of each other between seventeen seventy
- 6:28Speaker 1: and seventeen seventy five. In addition to William Clark, John Coulter,
- 6:32Speaker 1: Jim Ridger, and William Henry Ashley all being born in Virginia,
- 6:35Speaker 1: they all also died in Missouri. Oh. I like that.
- 6:39Speaker 1: That should not have been multiple choice. I would disagree.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Do you think you guys would have been in their
- 6:47Speaker 1: correct and and he got it wrong and I got
- 6:51Speaker 1: it wrong. We are to question to the topic is fishing? Hell? Yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 1: a wiper is a high brid of what two fish?
- 7:03Speaker 1: A wiper that is spelled w I p e R.
- 7:09Speaker 1: A wiper is a hybrid of what two fish. We
- 7:12Speaker 1: have a lot of very quick answers in the room,
- 7:16Speaker 1: Seth and Chester still thinking there's a fox named swiper.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Dora the explorer don't think that'll help you. Does everybody
- 7:27Speaker 1: have an answer? You ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 7:31Speaker 1: We have Steve saying a white bass and a stripe bass.
- 7:34Speaker 1: We have Tom with no answer, hating and saying white
- 7:38Speaker 1: bass and striper, Katie saying a whitefish, and question Mark
- 7:42Speaker 1: Krinn saying a whitefish and a bass, Chester saying a
- 7:47Speaker 1: white bass and a striper, and Seth saying a bass
- 7:51Speaker 1: and unknown not even what kind of bass. The correct
- 7:54Speaker 1: answer is a white bass and a striped bass. So
- 7:57Speaker 1: we had a few folks get that right. Wipers are
- 8:01Speaker 1: considered functionally sterile, meaning that they have the ability to
- 8:04Speaker 1: reproduce with stripe mass, white mass, or other wipers, but
- 8:07Speaker 1: are rarely successful at doing so. This makes them a
- 8:10Speaker 1: popular choice among game agencies to stock in lakes to
- 8:13Speaker 1: reduce schools of unwanted baitfish, acting as an angular friendly
- 8:17Speaker 1: alternative to chemical treatments, and it doesn't open up a whole.
- 8:20Speaker 1: It doesn't open up a whole Pandora's box off. Then
- 8:23Speaker 1: you got some population of fish that's right eating and
- 8:27Speaker 1: spreading around. But again there are rare instances where they
- 8:30Speaker 1: will reproduce, so I think they're becoming actually less popular.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Sometimes it does get you. Question three. The topic is gear.
- 8:42Speaker 1: This popular big game cartridge, which was first developed in
- 8:45Speaker 1: two thousand and seven, was originally created for long range
- 8:48Speaker 1: target shooting. This popular big game cartridge, which was first
- 8:54Speaker 1: developed in two thousand and seven, was originally created for
- 8:57Speaker 1: long range target shooting. We had Steve, who was a
- 8:59Speaker 1: rich stumped but now quickly has an answer. The rest
- 9:03Speaker 1: of the room seems confident in what they're writing. One
- 9:08Speaker 1: of the newest calibers to the market. Does everybody have
- 9:11Speaker 1: an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 9:16Speaker 1: Steve saying the six five creed more, Tom with no answer,
- 9:20Speaker 1: Hayden saying the six five creed, Katie saying the six
- 9:23Speaker 1: five Western Krein with no answer. Chester Kren wrote three
- 9:27Speaker 1: point question. Three point question. Oh that's number three. Chester
- 9:34Speaker 1: and Seth both saying the six five creed More. They
- 9:36Speaker 1: are correct, it is the six five creed more, Katie,
- 9:39Speaker 1: that was an educated guest. I think the six five
- 9:41Speaker 1: is it? The six eight Westerns came out a few
- 9:43Speaker 1: years ago right around there, though I thought it might
- 9:46Speaker 1: have been a PRC. A few months ago, Jordan Sillers
- 9:49Speaker 1: or to Caliber Battle in the media dot com where
- 9:51Speaker 1: he put the six five creed More up against the
- 9:53Speaker 1: three o eight Winchester. Each cartridge was judge based on ballistics, shootability,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and versatility. It was a tight race, but only one
- 10:00Speaker 1: could be declared the winner. If you want to know
- 10:02Speaker 1: which cartridge came out on top, you can go read
- 10:05Speaker 1: that piece on our website, which is titled Caliber Battle
- 10:08Speaker 1: colin three o eight Winchester versus six five creed More.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And we do have a six to eight Western versus
- 10:14Speaker 1: a two seventy Winchester coming up today. Good plug, Katie,
- 10:18Speaker 1: that's why we got you here. Quick question about your tattoo.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Are you you have the dead man's hand. It's very
- 10:27Speaker 1: hard to distinguish the clubs from the spades on that tattoo. Well,
- 10:31Speaker 1: it's just not very big, but there were clubs in spades. Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 1: But dude, I mean when you're an old man and
- 10:36Speaker 1: it's just like an inky blob anyway. You know I've
- 10:39Speaker 1: accepted that, okay, because it's already like then I'll have
- 10:44Speaker 1: very hard to distinguish. Then people will be forced to
- 10:46Speaker 1: ask me about it and be like, well, let me
- 10:48Speaker 1: tell you about wild Bill Hiccock. They're like, why does
- 10:51Speaker 1: your arms say? I think it's a really nice tattoos.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Thank you? Oh I like it. I'm just worried about
- 10:59Speaker 1: it as long I'm I have concerns about his longevity.
- 11:01Speaker 1: That's all we are onto question four. The topic is conservation.
- 11:07Speaker 1: When scoring an Elker deer using the Boone and Crocket
- 11:10Speaker 1: or Pope and Young system, this is the throwaway to
- 11:12Speaker 1: Tom time length measurements are represented by the letter G.
- 11:17Speaker 1: What letter is used to represent the circumference measurements? So
- 11:23Speaker 1: the time measurements are represented by the letter G. What
- 11:28Speaker 1: letter is used to represent the circumference measurements? A fairly
- 11:34Speaker 1: stumped room? This may be an offer. This is when
- 11:41Speaker 1: scoring an Elk or a deer, and both Boone and
- 11:44Speaker 1: Crocket and Pope and Young use the same lettering did
- 11:49Speaker 1: you got Tom? Hey? You got a one in twenty six? Chance?
- 11:58Speaker 1: At least I'm ready? Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead?
- 12:04Speaker 1: And reveal your answers. We have Steve saying H, Tom
- 12:08Speaker 1: saying see, Hayden saying M. Katie saying M. Karana can't
- 12:13Speaker 1: see your answer, am Chester saying see, and Seth saying are.
- 12:17Speaker 1: But I think you do the circumferences right after the times,
- 12:20Speaker 1: so it'd be like H. The correct answer is H.
- 12:27Speaker 1: That's like critical thinking, man. I asked justin Spring Gusts,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I watched Yanni score Cou's deer, and that's what he
- 12:34Speaker 1: always does in that order. I asked justin Spring, the
- 12:37Speaker 1: director of Big Game Records for Boone and Crockett, why
- 12:39Speaker 1: this is? He told me this. Unfortunately, there isn't a
- 12:43Speaker 1: good story here. When they were originally devising the scoring system,
- 12:46Speaker 1: they labeled each type of measurement with a letter. They
- 12:49Speaker 1: happened to be at G for time lengths. Then obviously
- 12:52Speaker 1: the next in line is circumference, which is naturally the
- 12:55Speaker 1: letter H. So well done, Steve, Yeah, people, you know
- 12:57Speaker 1: you always when you're sitting there criticizing deer, yours like
- 13:01Speaker 1: he's got pretty weak. G. Two's survey knows the g's right.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And the next measurement, as you said, is circumference. Who's
- 13:08Speaker 1: represented by h question five. After this, we will get
- 13:13Speaker 1: a scoreboard update from Phil, who decided not to play
- 13:16Speaker 1: today so he can do a better job of scorky. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and people might be treated to a mideral advertisements. Stay
- 13:27Speaker 1: tuned for the mideral advertisement. The topic is foraging. Tell
- 13:32Speaker 1: me two mushrooms that have names inspired by birds? Now
- 13:35Speaker 1: I could think of seven. Maybe you can come up
- 13:37Speaker 1: with more. Um, I'd be hard pressed to imagine that
- 13:41Speaker 1: you can get to like ten. But tell me two
- 13:44Speaker 1: mushrooms that have names inspired by birds. Steve has one.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I think the rest of the room seems like it
- 13:54Speaker 1: probably has one. Tom, Do you do much foraging? Know?
- 14:01Speaker 1: I know more? Else? That's all I know. We're talking
- 14:05Speaker 1: about colloquial names, right, Yeah, I'm not talking like the
- 14:09Speaker 1: scientific name. Two mushrooms that have names inspired by birds,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and there's ten of them? I could think of seven?
- 14:23Speaker 1: Holy cow? Yeah, I'm just guessing. How's the room doing.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Can we get half a point? I would not be
- 14:35Speaker 1: awarding any half a point? And do we we? Just?
- 14:38Speaker 1: We can only put two down down? Don't shot gun
- 14:41Speaker 1: answers out there? Two mushrooms with names inspired by birds.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I thought this would be a guarantee for Steve almost
- 14:50Speaker 1: felt a little guilty including it. No, I'm really struggling.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Do you have one? Yeah? Are you gonna try to
- 14:57Speaker 1: find number two? I'm thinking okay, I'll think for as
- 15:00Speaker 1: long as I can. And does everybody else have an answer? Steve,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think you were out of time. Go ahead and
- 15:07Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Steve saying pheasant back, Tom
- 15:12Speaker 1: saying black or brown, Hayden saying chicken in the woods,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and pheasant back, Katie sang chicken in the woods, and
- 15:19Speaker 1: hand in the woods, Carin saying I can't read that
- 15:22Speaker 1: Krin turkey tale, and chicken of the woods. Chester's saying
- 15:25Speaker 1: shantraill and morale, and Seth saying to the son of them,
- 15:32Speaker 1: chicken out the woods? How did the seventh over a
- 15:35Speaker 1: perfect game? I feel like such an idiot Chicken of
- 15:38Speaker 1: the woods in the woods. And then there's one mushroom
- 15:41Speaker 1: that shares two birds names, the pheasant back mushroom, which
- 15:44Speaker 1: is also known as the hawkswing or the dry head saddle,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and then the turkey tail, the bird's nest, and the
- 15:50Speaker 1: chicken fat bullet. Among these mushrooms, most folks who consider
- 15:55Speaker 1: chicken in the Woods to be the best tasting. If
- 15:56Speaker 1: you want to find chicken in the woods this year,
- 15:59Speaker 1: we have a lot of great sources on the media
- 16:00Speaker 1: dot com that will help you do just that. We
- 16:03Speaker 1: have a Hayden Samic article called six Beginner Friendly Mushrooms
- 16:06Speaker 1: you can find in Summer and two articles that I
- 16:08Speaker 1: wrote called the Other Springtime Mushrooms and the twelve Best
- 16:11Speaker 1: Edible Wild Mushrooms. All three pieces will help you locate, identify,
- 16:15Speaker 1: and cook chicken in the Woods. I might feel as
- 16:18Speaker 1: though Hiccock was playing with with a trick deck because
- 16:22Speaker 1: those all the click clubs. I'll ask my artists about it.
- 16:29Speaker 1: See what he can do about My kids have a
- 16:31Speaker 1: trick deck now for Yeah, you know what, I didn't
- 16:33Speaker 1: know this. It's a pinuckle deck or what. No, It's
- 16:36Speaker 1: like there's like an ever so slight difference in the
- 16:39Speaker 1: size of the cards, so you can load it with
- 16:42Speaker 1: like ever so slight where they can feel it with
- 16:45Speaker 1: their hand in the doing card tricks. Maybe that's why
- 16:46Speaker 1: he got shot. There you go. We are halfway through
- 16:49Speaker 1: the game. Phil give us a scoreboard update. Tied in
- 16:52Speaker 1: third place, we have Tom, Miranda Corin and staff with
- 16:56Speaker 1: one point in second place, tied Our Katie and Chester
- 17:01Speaker 1: and tied in first place Steve and Hayden, Sammo and
- 17:06Speaker 1: how many they have? They have? Four? Question six The
- 17:20Speaker 1: topic is fishing. This next great question comes to us
- 17:25Speaker 1: via Jeff Witgrove. If you have a question you think
- 17:27Speaker 1: is right for Meat Eat Trivia, you can send it
- 17:29Speaker 1: to trivia at the meadeater dot com. The National Freshwater
- 17:33Speaker 1: Fishing Hall of Fame, which is located in Wisconsin, has
- 17:36Speaker 1: a one hundred and forty three foot sculpture of a
- 17:38Speaker 1: jumping fish in front of it. What kind of fish
- 17:41Speaker 1: is it? That's not a fishing question, that's a tourism question.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Chester Chester had it down before you even. The National
- 17:50Speaker 1: Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, which is located in Wisconsin,
- 17:54Speaker 1: which is where Chester hails from, has a one hundred
- 17:58Speaker 1: and forty three foot sculpture of a jumping fish in
- 18:01Speaker 1: front of it. What kind of fish is it? Does
- 18:06Speaker 1: everybody have an answer about Chester? Real? Big old sturgeon? Yeah,
- 18:12Speaker 1: they jump, Actually, white sturgeon jump quite a bit. The
- 18:15Speaker 1: Whole River Monsters episode about surgeon knocking folks out of boats.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 18:23Speaker 1: a largemouth bass, Tom saying ah, the rum is seeing
- 18:30Speaker 1: Chester's answer, which is musky, Katie saying sturgeon, Krin saying carpet,
- 18:35Speaker 1: and Seth saying a largemouth bass. Chester's of course right,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it is a musky. It is formally called the Shrine
- 18:43Speaker 1: to anglers, but most just refer to it as the
- 18:46Speaker 1: Big Muskie. It is nearly five stories tall and sits
- 18:52Speaker 1: on top an eighty eight thousand gallon pond. The jaws
- 18:55Speaker 1: of the fish actually have an observation deck which offered
- 18:58Speaker 1: a panoramic view of Lake Hayward, who can accommodate about
- 19:01Speaker 1: twenty people and occasionally functions as a wedding venue for
- 19:04Speaker 1: intimate ceremony, pretty close to the Angry Minnow, which is
- 19:08Speaker 1: a tavern. Have you been up to that observation, Dort, Yeah,
- 19:12Speaker 1: you should. My grandparents live right up there, so we
- 19:19Speaker 1: on the observation. No up in that area. Have you
- 19:25Speaker 1: ever heard of somebody getting married there? No, dude, you
- 19:28Speaker 1: should have done that. Man. That have been great. We
- 19:32Speaker 1: are onto question seven. The topic is cooking. Canola is
- 19:37Speaker 1: a trademarked term that is the combination of two other words.
- 19:42Speaker 1: What are they Canola is a trademarked term that is
- 19:48Speaker 1: a combination of two other words. What are they? Holy shit?
- 19:54Speaker 1: This would be like um. The word spam is the
- 19:58Speaker 1: combination of spiced ham. So what is canola? Does anybody
- 20:05Speaker 1: have an answer? I do? Do you think you got
- 20:08Speaker 1: it right? Chester? I gotta no, but I think it
- 20:12Speaker 1: could be close. Okay, looks like you wrote Musky again.
- 20:17Speaker 1: He got so lucky on that first one. He's like,
- 20:19Speaker 1: I'm trying to hit again. Man. Does everybody have an answer? Steve? No,
- 20:27Speaker 1: I don't. It's the first time in my life. Oh no,
- 20:30Speaker 1: it's my first blank card. I don't have an answer.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answer to we have Steve
- 20:35Speaker 1: with nothing, Tom saying corn and sunflower, Hayden saying what
- 20:40Speaker 1: are we saying? There? You know, don't don't worry. Okay,
- 20:43Speaker 1: Katie saying corn and gonna do that. But there's no
- 20:46Speaker 1: way that's right, creating no answer, and Seth without an answer.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Nobody got it right. The correct answer is Canada and oil,
- 20:58Speaker 1: but that's not too In Great I didn't say ingredients.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I never said yeah. You can go back and listen
- 21:10Speaker 1: to this episode in nowhere did I say I might
- 21:13Speaker 1: just go back. I had the Hey you three, that's right.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Canola oil is a vegetable oil derived from a variety
- 21:22Speaker 1: of rape seed plants that are low in acid. Danielle
- 21:25Speaker 1: Pruett named canola oil is one of the five best
- 21:27Speaker 1: oils for deep frying fish in a meat Eator article
- 21:30Speaker 1: because it has a high smoke point, neutral flavor, and
- 21:33Speaker 1: it's very affordable. Did you cover off on that that
- 21:35Speaker 1: name the nomenclature. If you want to know her other
- 21:39Speaker 1: four picks for the best deep frying oils, you can
- 21:41Speaker 1: find that article in the meatia dot com just titled
- 21:44Speaker 1: the best oils for deep Frying Fish. We're onto question eight.
- 21:49Speaker 1: We will get another scoreboard update from Phil after this.
- 21:52Speaker 1: According to Duck's Unlimited, there are seven recognized subspecies of
- 21:57Speaker 1: Canada goose. Name two of them that would tell you
- 22:01Speaker 1: this cackling is not one of them. Do you considers
- 22:04Speaker 1: cacklers to be a different species than Canada geese, so
- 22:08Speaker 1: don't write down cackler named two of these seven recognized subspecies.
- 22:13Speaker 1: The topic for this question I forgot to announce is waterfowl.
- 22:19Speaker 1: One problem here? Oh they recently really really they went
- 22:25Speaker 1: from twenty four like to seven, So there's a lot
- 22:29Speaker 1: of upheaval in the Canada goose taxonomy. Realm, my guests
- 22:35Speaker 1: would be what your friend to do is when they
- 22:36Speaker 1: split cacklers and Canada geese, which happened in two thousand
- 22:41Speaker 1: and four. No, okay, we'll talk about later. Everybody sees
- 22:48Speaker 1: of Canada geese. I got one, and I ain't good enough.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Not when you need to? Does everybody have an answer?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answer. We have Steve saying
- 23:01Speaker 1: the giant and the lesser, Tom saying the giant, and
- 23:04Speaker 1: the spec Canna or Hayden saying the greater and lesser,
- 23:09Speaker 1: Katie saying the Ottawa and Saskatchewan Korean without an answer.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Chester you're saying the lesser, and specs and Seth saying
- 23:17Speaker 1: the lesser and the quill. I have a problem. I wrote,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I meant greater, uh uh no the other I didn't
- 23:28Speaker 1: mean giant. Here here are the correct answers. You have
- 23:32Speaker 1: the Hudson Bay or Interior, the Moffits or great Basin,
- 23:36Speaker 1: the Giant or greater, the lesser, the Atlantic, the Dusky,
- 23:41Speaker 1: and the Vancouver. So you got it? Did you get it? Yeah?
- 23:46Speaker 1: I got it? Where the where the other ones. Do
- 23:50Speaker 1: you know you got it? Let's see your thing greater
- 23:54Speaker 1: U lesser meant what the other ones are? Yeah, well,
- 23:58Speaker 1: so I talk about the cacklers here in a second.
- 24:01Speaker 1: In two thousand and four is when the American Ornithologist
- 24:05Speaker 1: Union made the switch to separating Canada geese and cackling geese.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Most birding and hunting groups have followed suit, identifying seven
- 24:12Speaker 1: subspecies of Canada goose and four subspecies of cackling geese.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Those cackling subspecies are Richardson's taverns alusion and cackling cackling mingling.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Everyone all the water fowlers in Montana want to kill
- 24:29Speaker 1: those quill. They call him the quill Lake Canadas to
- 24:32Speaker 1: have the white breast feathers. Why isn't that subspecies? Because
- 24:36Speaker 1: it's not man Listen, they have. As I was saying earlier,
- 24:42Speaker 1: genetics has done two things to the world. It's created
- 24:46Speaker 1: a tremendous amount of lumping and a tremendous amount of splitting. Yes,
- 24:50Speaker 1: this answer will probably be different in a decade from now.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Right now, geese are going through a dramatic lumping episode. Gotcha,
- 25:01Speaker 1: as opposed to other critters, like, there's a lot of
- 25:03Speaker 1: aquatic insects that are going through a great splitting episode
- 25:08Speaker 1: right now. Things that we were like, oh it looks
- 25:10Speaker 1: like a bug are different. We are onto question nine.
- 25:15Speaker 1: The topic is biology. Yeah, I thought you'd do a scoreboard.
- 25:19Speaker 1: That's a good call, Thank you, Phil. I'm just going
- 25:23Speaker 1: to list the people who are still in the game.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Everyone else, you're doing great, lovely people. Chester has three
- 25:32Speaker 1: points in second place, and tied for first are Stephen
- 25:36Speaker 1: Hayden with five. All right, we have two questions left.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Question nine. The topic is biology. This is a visual question.
- 25:45Speaker 1: If you want to play along and see what the
- 25:46Speaker 1: room is seeing, you can find the photo that I'm
- 25:48Speaker 1: about to show them on my Instagram, which is at
- 25:51Speaker 1: Spencer New Heart. So I'll give you a second to
- 25:53Speaker 1: pause the show. You know on Instagram you've seen the picture,
- 25:56Speaker 1: you liked it. I haven't seen the picture though. You
- 25:59Speaker 1: followed me, and you're now back to the podcast. All right.
- 26:02Speaker 1: A few weeks ago I posted a picture of a
- 26:05Speaker 1: squirrel that got it scrotum stuck in a wooden fence
- 26:07Speaker 1: and died hanging upside down by its sack. Shortly thereafter,
- 26:11Speaker 1: Joe Bostwick sent me a picture of another animal in
- 26:14Speaker 1: the exact same predicament at his house in Oregon. I'm
- 26:18Speaker 1: going to show you a picture of that animal scrotum
- 26:21Speaker 1: and you need to identify what it is based off
- 26:24Speaker 1: of those testicles where this was in Oregon. This this
- 26:35Speaker 1: critter got stuck in a wooden fence in Oregon and
- 26:41Speaker 1: was hanging upside down when Joe found it. So you
- 26:47Speaker 1: need to use this scroll tom to identify what animal
- 26:50Speaker 1: it belongs to. Urology question, what are you seeing Chester?
- 26:56Speaker 1: What does that look like to you? It looks like
- 26:59Speaker 1: a hairy yes, spencer. You always talk about how this
- 27:05Speaker 1: You're not going to find these questions in bar trivia.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I think that's the first one where I'm like, yep,
- 27:10Speaker 1: it's actually true. This is the first time something like
- 27:12Speaker 1: this has ever been asked. Yeah, so what you are
- 27:17Speaker 1: looking at is the nutsack of an animal and organ
- 27:23Speaker 1: that got caught in somebody's wooden fence. I want you
- 27:25Speaker 1: to tell me what animal that scrotum belongs to. Does
- 27:29Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? No? Not yet, not yet? Thank you, Joe.
- 27:37Speaker 1: This landed in my Instagram DMS. You're gonna get a
- 27:40Speaker 1: lot of mileage out of it. Does everybody have an answer,
- 27:46Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 27:49Speaker 1: a possum aka grinner, Tom saying no clue, Hayden saying raccoon,
- 27:54Speaker 1: Katie saying fox, Krin saying raccoon, Chester you're saying raccoon,
- 27:58Speaker 1: and Seth saying at coon. The correct answer is possum.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Damn it, Grinner, that possum. You're ready for a plot
- 28:07Speaker 1: twist actually survived and Joe and his wife Kelsey or hunters,
- 28:11Speaker 1: but they didn't have the heart to kill the possum,
- 28:13Speaker 1: so Joe got out his drill and loosened the boards
- 28:16Speaker 1: on the fence until the critter was out. They said
- 28:18Speaker 1: the possum had scratched its claws nearly completely off while
- 28:21Speaker 1: dangle upside down, which is understandable since they believe it
- 28:24Speaker 1: was hanging there for about three days. Once it was free,
- 28:28Speaker 1: they watched it slowly walk away and lay in a
- 28:31Speaker 1: pile of leaves and play possum, And by the next
- 28:33Speaker 1: morning the possum was gone, so we think it had
- 28:36Speaker 1: a happy ending. He said to his parties, He's like,
- 28:38Speaker 1: don't even ask where I've been. We are onto the
- 28:44Speaker 1: last question and we have Hayden, who was trailing Steve
- 28:48Speaker 1: by one point. We need Steve to get it wrong
- 28:50Speaker 1: and Hayden to get it right for a chance at
- 28:53Speaker 1: a tiebreaker. The topic is cooking. Japanese horseradish is more
- 28:58Speaker 1: commonly referred to as what quick answers from Steve and Hayden.
- 29:04Speaker 1: There's no way he's gonna get that wrong. See if
- 29:07Speaker 1: the rest of the room does the easiest. Japanese horse
- 29:12Speaker 1: radish is more commonly referred to as what now you're
- 29:15Speaker 1: just putting down, haye An, why are you going asking
- 29:18Speaker 1: this question? I think it's a good question, Steve, slip
- 29:21Speaker 1: you with twenty under the table or something. Man, Now,
- 29:24Speaker 1: you guys are just being mean to the folks who
- 29:25Speaker 1: aren't going to get it right. No, I'm not saying that.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I'm not saying because of it's of ease or difficult.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'm just saying, see how it even kind of has
- 29:31Speaker 1: anything to do with anything. It's a cooking question. Okay, yeah,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I can see it now. Okay, he's back in tomorrow.
- 29:38Speaker 1: They got him. Yeah, no, I agree. Now, does everybody
- 29:42Speaker 1: have an answer? Seth, you're gonna come up with one,
- 29:44Speaker 1: do you think at this point doesn't matter. Now go
- 29:48Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying with Sabi,
- 29:51Speaker 1: Tom saying with Sabi Sabi, with Sabi Krean saying with
- 29:54Speaker 1: Sabi Chess, you're saying with Sabi Seth without an answer.
- 29:56Speaker 1: The correct answer is with sabi and that makes Steve
- 30:02Speaker 1: the winner of the inaugural Another patch, five hundred dollars donation.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Where's it going, Steve? I would like my five hundred
- 30:14Speaker 1: dollar donation to go to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership.
- 30:18Speaker 1: What do you like so much about them? Besides being
- 30:20Speaker 1: on the board. Yeah, it does that line your pockets somehow.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Quite the opposite, Quite the opposite. I'm on the board.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I like that they deal in federal policy. I like
- 30:33Speaker 1: that they have a legitimate bipartisan seat at the table
- 30:37Speaker 1: when it comes to such discussions and people listen to them.
- 30:41Speaker 1: And I like their slogan, which is guaranteeing Americans quality
- 30:47Speaker 1: places to hunt and fish. Can't argue with that no money, Well,
- 30:51Speaker 1: Span speaks to my soul. We have more mediator trivia
- 30:56Speaker 1: coming at you soon. Thank you guys for planning. Tomte
- 31:00Speaker 1: thanks for joining us. Thank you very much. Thanks to great,
- 31:03Speaker 1: to be here,
