- 0:00Welcome back to the Real Life Theology Podcast.
- 0:05Today's episode is going to feature Nate Ross,
- 0:08who's going to share with us
- 0:10why we would be lost without Jesus.
- 0:13He calls listeners to seek the lost
- 0:15like the one who sought and saved them.
- 0:19Hope you guys enjoy this episode.
- 0:22I don't even know how you follow that.
- 0:25IT, you are the man,
- 0:26and this is the gift of the renewed community, amen?
- 0:29That we have gifts and creativity
- 0:31and voices from Tampa and all across the world,
- 0:34and this is the kingdom of God.
- 0:35My name's Nate, glad that you get to be here.
- 0:38This is my second Renew Conference,
- 0:40and Bobby asked me to come and talk about
- 0:43the whole concept of lost without Jesus.
- 0:46And I've got a buddy in my life group,
- 0:49he's a childhood friend.
- 0:50He's actually a state senator in Indiana,
- 0:53and he asked me to come pray at the beginning of session
- 0:58in the courthouse, or in the Senate House there
- 1:00in Indiana, Indianapolis.
- 1:01And right before I got up to pray over the session,
- 1:05I was real nervous, and the chaplain came up to me,
- 1:07and he said, whatever you do, don't forget the five Bs.
- 1:13Baptism, born again, Beelzebub.
- 1:16I felt that in my mind, I'm trying to,
- 1:19he could tell I didn't know what he was saying,
- 1:21and he said, be brief, brother, be brief.
- 1:23And I promise you today, I remember the five Bs,
- 1:26and we're gonna get on with it,
- 1:28and we're gonna get to great breakouts,
- 1:30but I wanna talk just about this idea
- 1:32of being lost without Jesus.
- 1:34And when Bobby said that,
- 1:35I immediately went to Luke chapter 19,
- 1:38when Jesus says this with the story of Zacchaeus,
- 1:41and I love the story of Zacchaeus.
- 1:43I love the compassion of Jesus.
- 1:46The more I study scripture,
- 1:47this is what is dumbfounding to me,
- 1:4920%, over 20% of the New Testament
- 1:51is written to one person, Theophilus,
- 1:56a doubter and a skeptic,
- 1:59who God sought to seek out and to pour into.
- 2:03And today, our scripture,
- 2:04over 20% of the New Testament is to one man,
- 2:06and we don't even get the conversion story at the end,
- 2:09and we don't even get to hear
- 2:10if Theophilus planned the churches or did this or that.
- 2:13All we know is this, Theophilus was worth the pursuit.
- 2:17Theophilus was worth going after.
- 2:20Lost without Jesus.
- 2:23And Jesus in Luke chapter 19, verse 10, ends with this,
- 2:27for the Son of Man came to seek and save that what was what?
- 2:31Lost.
- 2:34A problem of lost was this.
- 2:35I've grown up thinking lost.
- 2:37I grew up in Las Vegas.
- 2:38My dad was a pastor out there.
- 2:40I know lost, I know lost.
- 2:43I know my story of being lost.
- 2:46Here's my problem with lost though.
- 2:48I thought lost meant this.
- 2:50We're just trying to find our way.
- 2:53Jesus, when he says the Son of Man has come to seek
- 2:55and save that what was lost,
- 2:57the word lost is the same Greek word
- 3:00that he says in John chapter 3, 16,
- 3:02when he says the word perish.
- 3:06To be lost means that you and I are perishing.
- 3:10Think about the story of Zacchaeus for a moment.
- 3:13What was he doing before he turned his life over to Jesus?
- 3:18He was killing people with taxes.
- 3:22He was breaking families down with oppression.
- 3:26He was tearing communities apart.
- 3:29And what we see about Zacchaeus was this.
- 3:31He had everything, and yet he had nothing.
- 3:36His own soul, he knew, was perishing.
- 3:41This is why the story of Jesus is so fascinating
- 3:43because Jesus says stuff like this.
- 3:45Immediately, I must come to your house today.
- 3:50There's an immediacy, there's a hunger,
- 3:52there's a drive for that which is lost,
- 3:54that which is perishing, that which is dying,
- 3:57that which is falling apart, lost without Jesus.
- 4:02And Jesus doesn't just say that.
- 4:03I love what the text says.
- 4:05In verse seven, it says this, in Luke chapter 19,
- 4:09it says, and when all the people saw this,
- 4:11they began to mutter, he has gone
- 4:13to be the guest of a sinner.
- 4:16This is what I love about Jesus.
- 4:17He has compassion for Zacchaeus,
- 4:21and he has courage to have all the people talk about him.
- 4:26At lunch, one of the senior pastors just opened,
- 4:29openly said this, it seems like that whole fog analogy
- 4:34that Orpheus shared is true of every pastor
- 4:36and leader in this room.
- 4:39We're trying to navigate our way forward,
- 4:41and man, it seems like a rollercoaster.
- 4:44And we're trying to be courageous,
- 4:46and every time you and I do a courageous thing,
- 4:48we get blown up, don't we?
- 4:51I remember trying to do, I've started a diversity team
- 4:54just to help me understand what I don't understand
- 4:56about diversity, and after George Floyd,
- 5:00I interviewed one of the guys from our diversity team
- 5:03who loves the Lord, who's committed to racial reconciliation,
- 5:07and we had people leave the church in droves
- 5:11after talking about what was lost.
- 5:15And Jesus, in this passage, doesn't just have time
- 5:18for a meal for Zacchaeus, he has time
- 5:22for all the crowd to reject him.
- 5:26Here's what I'm learning more and more is this,
- 5:27I wanna have the compassion of Jesus,
- 5:29I wanna have the courage of Jesus,
- 5:32but here's what I'm learning, to be compassionate
- 5:34like Jesus and to be courageous like Jesus means this,
- 5:37I have to embrace the conviction of Jesus,
- 5:40that I will not have compassion for this world,
- 5:43and I will not be the courageous leader I need to be
- 5:46as a pastor without the deep conviction
- 5:48that we are lost without Jesus.
- 5:52Boy, the Lord was teaching me this less than four years ago,
- 5:56it was my wife and I's 10th anniversary,
- 5:58we'd never gone to an all-inclusive before,
- 6:00and I do what every good husband does, I got on Expedia.
- 6:05And, you know what I mean?
- 6:07Cause like, we're gonna go there,
- 6:08but we're gonna go there cheap.
- 6:09And I remember going there and we planned our first,
- 6:13kind of all-inclusive 10-year anniversary,
- 6:15and I got on there and we went into Cancun and it was great.
- 6:21And then the first night I remember sitting down,
- 6:24and they had this kind of little cafe area
- 6:25for just the people in our section of the hotel.
- 6:29And I'll never forget, Bill and his partner came up
- 6:32and sat down right next to us.
- 6:36Same sex couple out of Washington, DC.
- 6:39And I went, oh man, I was here to relax,
- 6:43I didn't think theological conversations
- 6:44were gonna come up, cause the first question it is,
- 6:46and you guys know this when you get on a plane,
- 6:47what do you do?
- 6:48Right, and it's like, right, the window just goes up,
- 6:51right, everybody starts talking to you.
- 6:54First thing they do, we're sitting down,
- 6:56there's only four chairs and Ruthie and I
- 6:58are just sitting there and they come sit down
- 6:59right next to us, they go,
- 7:00well, I think we'll just sit right here.
- 7:01I'm like, here we go, all right, here we go.
- 7:03And I had this bracelet on and it said, act.
- 7:06We were doing an initiative in the church,
- 7:08activating the campus, canceling our debt,
- 7:11and taking the gospel to the world.
- 7:12And the reason why we gave this to our church
- 7:14is because we wanted conversations like this to come up.
- 7:22You ever have a good idea as a pastor
- 7:24for everybody else except yourself?
- 7:26Yeah, y'all should do this, you know, go get them.
- 7:31First question, what's your bracelet for?
- 7:35Yeah, right.
- 7:41Disaster.
- 7:43My wife literally that night, she goes,
- 7:45I've never seen you that like discombobulated.
- 7:51She said, what's up?
- 7:52I said, and I'm really trying to be faithful
- 7:56to the scriptures and I really wanna be compassionate
- 8:03to the same-sex community.
- 8:06I wanna really hear every story
- 8:08and I don't wanna put stereotypes on people
- 8:10and assume every story is the same because it's not.
- 8:16But in this moment, I was trying to have compassion
- 8:21without a deep conviction.
- 8:26And here's what's gonna happen.
- 8:28When you and I try to have compassion and courage
- 8:30that doesn't come from a place of conviction,
- 8:34it will never be enough.
- 8:37The whole week, Bill and his partner
- 8:41would end up next to us on the beach at dinner.
- 8:48And there began to be this burden in my heart.
- 8:51The Lord was like, you need to share me with them.
- 8:55You share me, God, I'm on vacation.
- 8:57I thought you knew all things.
- 9:02It's not what I need.
- 9:06Here's what ends up happening.
- 9:08Don't share Christ with them.
- 9:10I'm like, man, I gotta get better at this.
- 9:11I gotta get better at this.
- 9:14Finally, say bye to them.
- 9:16We go off to the airport.
- 9:17They get in their van to go back to the Cancun airport.
- 9:19I get in our van to go back and I'm like, man, blew it.
- 9:26Get to the airport.
- 9:30Same checkout line, come on, Lord.
- 9:33Then I'm like, they're busy checking in.
- 9:35That's it, see you guys, see you guys.
- 9:37Same security line.
- 9:39He won't let it go.
- 9:42There was just this burden.
- 9:46Come to seek and save the lost, man.
- 9:49Come to seek and save the lost.
- 9:51Ruthie and I, one of our traditions is
- 9:55if we go to a church, we go to a church
- 9:57that's a little bit different than ours.
- 9:59Ruthie and I, one of our traditions is
- 10:02if we go to a new city, what we try to do
- 10:03is get a Starbucks mug from wherever we're at.
- 10:07We go to sit down, just at our gate.
- 10:13Ruthie disappears, my wife, for about 20 minutes.
- 10:16She comes back with tears in her eyes.
- 10:19And I'm like, are they out of Starbucks mugs?
- 10:20I'm like, you know, we'll buy one on Amazon.
- 10:22Like, we didn't have to be from Cancun, right?
- 10:25She said,
- 10:29she said,
- 10:31I went and found Bill.
- 10:37She said, I just need to let you know
- 10:40that God loves you, and we love you.
- 10:45And we just needed to let you know that.
- 10:47She said, Bill was just kind of taken back.
- 10:49He had seen me reading my theological books
- 10:51out on the beach, you know, doing the pastor thing,
- 10:53reading it, but never saying it.
- 10:59And then he said this to her.
- 11:01Nobody in my 40 years has told me that God loves me.
- 11:15Just sat there and cried in the airport in Cancun.
- 11:17And I'm like,
- 11:22because oftentimes as a pastor,
- 11:24I'm asking God for more compassion.
- 11:28And I'm asking God to make me a more courageous leader.
- 11:31And what he's telling me is this,
- 11:32Nate, you don't need more compassion.
- 11:35You need a deeper conviction.
- 11:39And when you have a deeper conviction
- 11:41that I've come to seek and save the loss,
- 11:42that Nate, I've come to seek and save you.
- 11:46I've come to seek and save Bill.
- 11:52The compassion to sit and eat,
- 11:58the courage to stand when all the people are muttering,
- 12:05they've gone to eat with sinners.
- 12:09What we'll find is this,
- 12:11that the conviction of Jesus
- 12:14will always lead to compassion for this world.
- 12:19And the conviction of Jesus will always make you and I
- 12:24into courageous men and women of Jesus.
- 12:32Lost without Jesus.
- 12:36Yes, we are, but how beautiful it is to be found.
- 12:42Amen.
- 12:44How beautiful it is to be found.
- 12:48May we go and seek and save the lost.
- 12:53The one who's come to seek and save us.
