- 0:00SPEAKER_10: From the peaks of the smokies to the banks of the Mississippi, this is your home for the University of Tennessee.
- 0:20SPEAKER_10: This is the Fall Network.
- 0:26SPEAKER_10: Inside access, behind the stage.
- 0:29SPEAKER_10: From Rocky Top, direct from the coaches, tight from the players, inside track.
- 0:36SPEAKER_10: Mike Keith starts now.
- 0:39SPEAKER_13: Welcome to the Mike Keith show delivered by Uber.
- 0:43SPEAKER_13: Last season, Ty Redman was a player who had to step in very, very quickly for the ball.
- 0:50SPEAKER_13: When an injury occurred in the season opener, Redmond became a regular at cornerback and went on to have an outstanding year.
- 0:58SPEAKER_13: 43 tackles and three interceptions.
- 1:01SPEAKER_13: As he is into year two as a starter, Ty Redmond knows his place and is excited to go back to his hometown of Atlanta this weekend competing for Tennessee.
- 1:14SPEAKER_13: Ty Redmond, tell me what it's like playing for cornerback coach Derek Jones.
- 1:20SPEAKER_19: Uh, you know, it's a real different uh approach that he does to the room, you know.
- 1:25SPEAKER_19: When we first got here, we we used to just do exercises before the meaning, we would say, to just to get to know the guys so we can build a more connection.
- 1:32SPEAKER_19: So like where you're from, who your family is.
- 1:35SPEAKER_19: And then when we start getting into season, he wanted to create competition in the room, so he would ask us to name everybody's weaknesses, or, you know, are they a liability and or are they uh an asset?
- 1:48SPEAKER_19: You know, people can't take it the wrong way, but I feel like everybody in the room understands he's just trying to, you know, make everybody better and make everybody comfortable with competition.
- 1:58SPEAKER_19: Cause in the real world, that's how it's gonna be, you know, even outside the uh facility he gets on about, you know, just being nice to the faculty members and in school, you know, just being a real uh young man and trying to just build us in the men and then players and then how has that helped Tyrecht?
- 2:20SPEAKER_19: I feel like it helped me, you know, be more like actually care what people think about me, you know, cause at the end of the day, I want to make it to the next level.
- 2:27SPEAKER_19: So, you know, at the end of the day, then am I not everybody doesn't really just only care about football.
- 2:33SPEAKER_19: They care about how you as is as a person.
- 2:35SPEAKER_13: So K and Lee, new cornerback, transfer from Auburn.
- 2:40SPEAKER_13: What's it like working on the opposite side from him?
- 2:43SPEAKER_19: Oh, it's a real nice, uh, cause I would say he has a you know real uh good instinct for the game, so it's easy to you know play with him, you know, and easy to communicate with him because he has like a lot of snaps in his league and he gets good leadership, so whenever he says something to the room, he gets the uh the guys like geared up for practice and stuff like that.
- 3:03SPEAKER_13: You came in with Trey Poti.
- 3:05SPEAKER_13: There are people who are saying he is one of the most improved players on this entire football team.
- 3:11SPEAKER_13: Do you agree?
- 3:12SPEAKER_13: And if so, why?
- 3:13SPEAKER_19: I do agree because um, you know, last year I went I wouldn't say he was too confident in his play.
- 3:20SPEAKER_19: Like he will always be there, but he wouldn't like always make the play.
- 3:23SPEAKER_19: I feel like this year he was balling, he was making plays, know what to do, communicating.
- 3:28SPEAKER_19: Like he took that next step, he's gonna be a real good asset for us this year.
- 3:33SPEAKER_13: Are quarterbacks asked to do something different in this defense than in last year's defense?
- 3:40SPEAKER_19: Uh yeah, I would say it's very different.
- 3:41SPEAKER_19: Um, I would say, you know, Nose really doesn't want to give up explosives, so we had to be more mindful, play up on everything, or just be more trustful in the defense because he has a lot of, you know, tactics in his defense.
- 3:57SPEAKER_13: For you as a player, what do you think you've improved the most upon from year one to year two?
- 4:04SPEAKER_19: I would say my um ability to know like schemes and formations and what the offense is trying to do.
- 4:11SPEAKER_19: Also, within like learning this defense, I'm quick about learning this defense because you know I have a lot of snaps and I I just seen a lot, so I have more feel for the game.
- 4:22SPEAKER_19: And yeah, I can make more plays with that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_13: There are obviously different places that you have to improve.
- 4:29SPEAKER_13: There's obviously the weight room, there's the practice field, but there's also the film room.
- 4:34SPEAKER_13: That's an important part of your job as a corner.
- 4:37SPEAKER_13: Are you telling me you feel like you've probably improved the most, maybe in the film room from year one to year two?
- 4:44SPEAKER_19: Yeah, I would say definitely in the film room, you know.
- 4:46SPEAKER_19: In the film, I I see a lot of things and try to help, you know, the younger guys to see what I see, cause I know last year that's what I was I was used to when the older guys would say to me.
- 4:57SPEAKER_19: So I was trying to help out the guys to you know bring them along so god come together and be better.
- 5:03SPEAKER_13: Colton hood was very important for you, was he not?
- 5:06SPEAKER_13: Or why why did he help you so much?
- 5:09SPEAKER_19: Uh I feel like he he really cared about me.
- 5:12SPEAKER_19: He wanted to see me, you know, get better.
- 5:14SPEAKER_19: So I I feel like he really was like, you know, tough on me, like as in like he would never let me flag off or, you know, he always encouraged me even if I, you know, gave up a touchdown, gave up a play while I was there, like to, you know, keep me up in high spirits.
- 5:32SPEAKER_19: So and he taught me a lot about like technique wise and you know stuff like that.
- 5:36SPEAKER_13: Okay, so I have to ask you the the really serious question, Dan.
- 5:40SPEAKER_13: I gotta ask you about game day snacks at Pilot.
- 5:43SPEAKER_13: So you're stopping at Pilot.
- 5:45SPEAKER_13: What are the game day snacks Ty Redmond is gonna get?
- 5:48SPEAKER_13: Gushers.
- 5:49SPEAKER_13: Gushers!
- 5:50SPEAKER_19: Yeah, Gushers, you know, gotta get some candy.
- 5:53SPEAKER_19: Um Gatorade.
- 5:55SPEAKER_19: It don't really matter what color.
- 5:57SPEAKER_19: And probably some hot tubes.
- 6:00SPEAKER_19: Which hot chips?
- 6:01SPEAKER_19: Hot Cheetos or something.
- 6:02SPEAKER_13: Hot Cheetos.
- 6:03SPEAKER_13: Good stuff, Ty Redmond.
- 6:05SPEAKER_13: Kneelan Stadium is preserved by pilot.
- 6:08SPEAKER_13: We know that.
- 6:08SPEAKER_13: We know the history.
- 6:10SPEAKER_13: Tell me what your favorite Nealin moment is, Nathan Robertson.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: I think it was sophomore year, and we were playing Florida, that overtime game.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: My role on defense hadn't come yet.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: But what I did get to go do was go out there and pancake people every now and then on offense.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: And so that that overtime touchdown when I was out there, Dylan just punched it in, and I was able to be out there and land blocks was a lot of fun.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Being able to turn around and celebrate right out there on the field, right where it happened, was a great experience.
- 6:42SPEAKER_13: When we come back, a Nox Villian who's on a national stage and representing her favorite team very well every chance she gets.

- 11:07SPEAKER_13: Welcome back to the Mike Geek Show delivered by Uber E.
- 11:10SPEAKER_13: Very excited to have Emily Proud on the show with us from CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports HQ.
- 11:17SPEAKER_13: Hello, Emily.
- 11:19SPEAKER_23: Hi, how are you?
- 11:20SPEAKER_13: I'm doing very well.
- 11:22SPEAKER_13: If you like college football, you like everything Emily Proud does.
- 11:25SPEAKER_13: She's got the CFP, CFB Insiders at 2 o'clock Mondays on CBS Sports Network and Thursdays at 2 on YouTube.
- 11:36SPEAKER_13: And then CFB pre-game on CBS Sports HQ Saturdays at 11 and also at 2 o'clock.
- 11:43SPEAKER_13: You're doing a lot of football, Emily Proud.
- 11:46SPEAKER_22: That was a lot of CFB right there.
- 11:49SPEAKER_22: That's a lot of college football.
- 11:51SPEAKER_22: I'm not complaining one bit.
- 11:53SPEAKER_13: Now you love college football because the backstory, when people see you on TV and on streaming, you're from Knoxville.
- 12:02SPEAKER_13: And uh soccer player went to Belmont.
- 12:06SPEAKER_13: But in your in the course of your TV, you've had to be a professional.
- 12:10SPEAKER_13: You haven't said a lot about the vols until you got to CBS Sports and maybe some guys picking on the vols a little bit, and uh your background has come out.
- 12:20SPEAKER_13: Is it Danny Connell who has mostly done it to you?
- 12:23SPEAKER_22: Well, yeah, because Danny Connell just loves to poke the bear uh on anything.
- 12:26SPEAKER_22: Um, but no, it's it's been such a cool thing to come out as a Tennessee Vols fan because, you know, the first few jobs that I worked were in local news in the state of Tennessee.
- 12:38SPEAKER_22: And everybody wants their, you know, their news to be impartial, right?
- 12:41SPEAKER_22: We can't show our favoritism.
- 12:43SPEAKER_22: My first job out of college was in my hometown of Knoxville, and I really just had to compose myself because you want impartial reporting, right?
- 12:51SPEAKER_22: But for me, it was a a work day.
- 12:53SPEAKER_22: I got paid to go to Neeland Stadium, which is a place that I was literally born a mile from downtown at Fort Sanders Hospital.
- 13:02SPEAKER_22: So for me, it was so hard to like keep it contained.
- 13:05SPEAKER_22: Then I went to work in Nashville, which is of course where you and I cross paths again.
- 13:09SPEAKER_22: And I also, it was the state of Tennessee roots for the University of Tennessee.
- 13:14SPEAKER_22: So I had to kind of hide a little bit.
- 13:16SPEAKER_22: And then now working for a national network, it's it's a good thing to show your fandom and to show your passion.
- 13:22SPEAKER_22: And so it's fun to be able to do that now.
- 13:24SPEAKER_13: Well, you're doing a good job defending the balls.
- 13:27SPEAKER_13: Everybody in orange is very proud of you.
- 13:31SPEAKER_22: Thank you.
- 13:32SPEAKER_13: All right, so first weekend is complete.
- 13:35SPEAKER_13: Emily Proud's most significant thing that happened in week one of college football.
- 13:43SPEAKER_22: I feel like everybody wants to go to Michigan with that uh final play that was an extra second, wasn't an extra second, but I'm actually gonna go to Death Valley.
- 13:51SPEAKER_22: And I think people want to talk about LSU and Lane Kiffin.
- 13:56SPEAKER_22: I know he's a fun name around town in Knoxville, but ultimately I think the most significant thing as far as it reverberates through the sport is the way that Clemson lost.
- 14:05SPEAKER_22: Because now you have the question of what's next for this program that somewhat recently won two national championships.
- 14:12SPEAKER_22: You still have that head coach who won those two national championships, Dabbo Sweeney.
- 14:17SPEAKER_22: And the talk around town is that he hasn't gotten with the times, right?
- 14:20SPEAKER_22: He hasn't adjusted to NIL and the transfer portal, and he's stubborn in his ways.
- 14:26SPEAKER_22: And we saw what happened.
- 14:28SPEAKER_22: The difference between the roster spend for these two Tigers programs was so evident in the way that that game ended.
- 14:36SPEAKER_22: I mean, 51 to 10 is crazy.
- 14:38SPEAKER_22: And so I just feel like this Clemson program is at a crossroads.
- 14:42SPEAKER_22: And so I'm so curious to see what happens next year because it's also one of those situations, too.
- 14:47SPEAKER_22: If you want to talk about money, I mean his buyout is nearly$60 million.
- 14:50SPEAKER_22: But also, do you part with a guy who won you two national championships?
- 14:54SPEAKER_22: It just it's such a tricky situation for them.
- 14:56SPEAKER_22: It's such a proud program, a program that's used to being one of the blue bloods of the sport because they have been for quite a while.
- 15:03SPEAKER_22: And so I'm just so interested to see what happens with this cleansing program.
- 15:08SPEAKER_13: LSU, some people believe now they are already a top five program in 2026.
- 15:14SPEAKER_13: I mean, after a win like that, can you ignore it?
- 15:17SPEAKER_22: No, certainly not.
- 15:19SPEAKER_22: I mean, the way that they've invested in not just financially, but just all in attitude.
- 15:26SPEAKER_22: You saw the the lawsuits that went up to game day.
- 15:29SPEAKER_22: I mean, this program wants to do whatever it takes, whoever be damned, they're gonna they're gonna try to win no matter what.
- 15:36SPEAKER_22: And it's certainly a team that has won multiple national championships, and so it feels like they're not too far away.
- 15:41SPEAKER_22: But it's hard not to put them in the top five of the sport after what you saw on Saturday.
- 15:46SPEAKER_22: That was a beatdown.
- 15:48SPEAKER_13: In terms of rankings and everything right now, realistically, do we have any idea?
- 15:55unknown: No.
- 15:56SPEAKER_22: No, because everyone's worried about Oregon.
- 15:58SPEAKER_22: A lot of people were picking Oregon to win their national championship, but while the rest of the country was starting things off with somewhat of a cupcake of a schedule, Boise is actually a very, very good team.
- 16:08SPEAKER_22: Spencer Danielson is one of the winningest head coaches currently in the game right now, and they're very good.
- 16:14SPEAKER_22: And so we can't overreact to what we've seen in week one necessarily.
- 16:19SPEAKER_22: But how do you judge a team that plays like Tennessee did an FCS opponent versus a team that start things off with a power four opponent or even one of the better group of six opponents?
- 16:29SPEAKER_22: It's so hard to tell at this point, but you know, that's how the sport is.
- 16:33SPEAKER_22: It's so fun.
- 16:34SPEAKER_22: We're gonna overreact no matter what, and that's what we're doing.
- 16:36SPEAKER_13: Yeah, I mean, we've got to have the polls.
- 16:38SPEAKER_13: There were some people who said, why do we even have preseason polls?
- 16:42SPEAKER_13: Well, because it's a sport, it's fun.
- 16:45SPEAKER_13: I mean, that's the whole thing.
- 16:46SPEAKER_13: Yes, we don't know, but that doesn't mean we're not gonna do it, right?
- 16:51SPEAKER_22: No, it that's what this is all about.
- 16:53SPEAKER_22: It's about passion, it's about fan being short for fanatic.
- 16:57SPEAKER_22: It's it's fighting throughout the week and then having it actually decided on game day.
- 17:01SPEAKER_22: It's controversy, it's question marks, it's all of that.
- 17:04SPEAKER_22: That's what makes it so fun.
- 17:05SPEAKER_22: It wouldn't be as fun if it was clean and made a lot of sense.
- 17:08SPEAKER_13: Gets better this weekend.
- 17:10SPEAKER_13: Ohio State at Texas sort of jumps things off, and maybe we're not gonna see many matchups like this in the regular season in years to come in terms of scheduling with the playoff as it is right now.
- 17:24SPEAKER_13: Early thoughts from Emily Proud on Ohio State, Texas.
- 17:28SPEAKER_22: I am so excited that we finally get to have a big time game.
- 17:32SPEAKER_22: I also want to say I'm looking forward to Michigan and Oklahoma too, especially considering how Michigan started this season.
- 17:38SPEAKER_22: Uh, but I think that obviously it's it's the firepower on offense for both of these teams.
- 17:42SPEAKER_22: Yes, their defenses are fantastic.
- 17:44SPEAKER_22: We saw what Matt Patricia did last year with Ohio State's defense averaging less than 10 points a game.
- 17:49SPEAKER_22: It was historic.
- 17:50SPEAKER_22: And then you got Will Muschamp coming in on the other side.
- 17:53SPEAKER_22: But the firepower, right?
- 17:54SPEAKER_22: My background is in recruiting, and there are so many five-stars on display.
- 18:01SPEAKER_22: Both five stars at the quarterback position and then the wide receiver row in particular.
- 18:05SPEAKER_22: I want to see Camp Coleman in action for Texas.
- 18:08SPEAKER_22: I want to see Jeremiah Smith in action for Ohio State.
- 18:11SPEAKER_22: Last year, when we saw this game, it was incredibly low scoring, but it was kind of early season debuts for Arch Manning and Julian Saiyan.
- 18:19SPEAKER_22: Both of these guys came in to this season as the unequivocal starters and leaders of their team.
- 18:24SPEAKER_22: So I don't think we're going to have a slow, low-scoring game in this one.
- 18:28SPEAKER_22: I'm hoping we see some fireworks here.
- 18:29SPEAKER_13: What is Emily Proud's thought on what we need to do with the college football playoff going forward to ensure that we still can have regular season non-conference matchups like Michigan, Oklahoma, like what we're going to see with Ohio State and Texas?
- 18:47SPEAKER_22: Yeah, I it's maybe crazy to say, but I'm okay with expansion.
- 18:52SPEAKER_22: I think that it will make some of these programs a little less nervous about taking a loss in one of these big time games.
- 18:59SPEAKER_22: But like with anything, I, you know, I hate to have this opinion, but ultimately, like a lot of it is about money, right?
- 19:06SPEAKER_22: And I feel like we're already seeing the SEC in particular come out and say, you got to play the nine conference game schedule, like we've seen from the Big Ten already.
- 19:14SPEAKER_22: So what's to say they don't take it a step further and say those other three games that you have in your schedule, they have to be against power four opponents.
- 19:22SPEAKER_22: So if you do expand the playoff, if you do make it a 2014 playoff, then it's okay to take one of those early losses.
- 19:29SPEAKER_22: And I know that the big pushback is, well, it's going to diminish the regular season and make it not matter as much.
- 19:35SPEAKER_22: Guys, it is one of, if not the shortest regular seasons in all of sports.
- 19:41SPEAKER_22: We're not playing a baseball season.
- 19:42SPEAKER_22: We're not playing hockey or NBA every single Saturday.
- 19:46SPEAKER_22: Whether or not the game quote unquote matters in terms of the playoff, it matters.
- 19:52SPEAKER_22: You know what game day is like.
- 19:53SPEAKER_22: I'm so jealous you guys are just getting off a fresh game day in Knoxville.
- 19:56SPEAKER_22: It does not get better than that.
- 19:58SPEAKER_22: I don't care what the stakes are.
- 20:00SPEAKER_22: The game, the atmosphere, everything is still gonna mean so much.
- 20:04SPEAKER_22: You only get so many Saturdays.
- 20:05SPEAKER_22: So I'm not too concerned about that.
- 20:07SPEAKER_13: Emily, were your colleagues at CBS Sports surprised by phase on Brandon's performance for Tennessee on Saturday?
- 20:16SPEAKER_22: No.
- 20:17SPEAKER_22: Was anyone surprised?
- 20:18SPEAKER_22: I mean, I knew it was gonna be fantastic because A, he's fantastic.
- 20:22SPEAKER_22: And like I said, my background is in recruiting.
- 20:24SPEAKER_22: Our recruiting guys were salivating over him.
- 20:26SPEAKER_22: And the fact, I think the thing that was interesting too about him in particular is it's one thing to give a guy that five-star designation, right?
- 20:34SPEAKER_22: It's another thing to say he is built both physically and mentally ready to start as a freshman.
- 20:41SPEAKER_22: Because that was the first time in many decades that Tennessee has started a true freshman uh quarterback.
- 20:47SPEAKER_22: Although, can we still say true freshman, by the way?
- 20:48SPEAKER_22: Now that we're doing this, okay.
- 20:51SPEAKER_22: You can't say the traditional freshmen.
- 20:54SPEAKER_22: I know, they're just freshmen.
- 20:55SPEAKER_22: It's still gonna be in my mind, though, because there's a difference to me.
- 20:58SPEAKER_22: Um, but no, it ultimately, you know, it was the first time they did it in a long time.
- 21:02SPEAKER_22: And so you have those question marks, but I don't think that we're going to necessarily learn everything there is to know about that young man after playing an FCS school.
- 21:13SPEAKER_22: But I do think that that's exactly what you wanted to see is the confidence, the leadership, the the just the wherewithal that he's not afraid of the moment necessarily.
- 21:22SPEAKER_22: I was impressed by all the quarterbacks that came in, especially coming off a tight quarterback competition.
- 21:27SPEAKER_22: That's what you want to see is that camaraderie and everybody still trying, no matter who wins or loses that competition.
- 21:32SPEAKER_22: So I don't think anybody was surprised by what they saw.
- 21:35SPEAKER_22: As far as the comparisons now with him doing the what he had the three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns, first freshman to do that in his debut since Cam Newton.
- 21:44SPEAKER_22: I don't know if I want to put his name with his name necessarily, uh, but I think that, yeah, there's no surprise that he was able to do what he did.
- 21:52SPEAKER_13: Early thoughts on Tennessee Georgia Tech for Saturday night in Atlanta.
- 21:56SPEAKER_22: I think Georgia Tech is a lot better a team than what we saw from them.
- 22:00SPEAKER_22: Week one against Colorado.
- 22:01SPEAKER_22: That's a tough place to play, too.
- 22:03SPEAKER_22: I know that, you know, maybe SEC fans will scoff at how small Bobby Dodd is, but that is ultimately a wild place to have to walk into and play.
- 22:11SPEAKER_22: First real test, as we have mentioned too, for phase on Rand.
- 22:14SPEAKER_22: It's one thing to get to play at home in a favorable Neland Stadium.
- 22:17SPEAKER_22: It's another thing to head on the road.
- 22:18SPEAKER_22: And so I think they could cause some tricky spots for them.
- 22:21SPEAKER_22: I saw some good things from Alberto Mendoza, but um ultimately it was his first game as well.
- 22:27SPEAKER_22: So I think there's still a lot to learn about the yellow jackets.
- 22:29SPEAKER_22: But uh, I'm feeling good about my balls, as I have to.
- 22:32SPEAKER_13: All right.
- 22:32SPEAKER_13: So who's the biggest trash talker you have to deal with on all the shows that you do?
- 22:39SPEAKER_22: Gosh, that's a good question.
- 22:40SPEAKER_22: I think Danny likes to poke the bear, Danny Cannell.
- 22:43SPEAKER_22: But I also work right next to Damian Harris, who is a two-time national championship running back for Alabama.
- 22:51SPEAKER_22: So obviously, there's gonna be a lot of back and forth between the Tennessee fan and the Alabama fan.
- 22:56SPEAKER_22: I will say it has been a fun existence being a Vols fan lately with all the winning that we've done against Alabama.
- 23:02SPEAKER_22: So uh I felt good about it, but we have a bet going every single year.
- 23:05SPEAKER_22: Last year, I had to wear an Alabama jersey during a show, which was not fun.
- 23:11SPEAKER_22: The year before, he had to wear orange, and he sang Rocky Top.
- 23:14SPEAKER_22: So we'll see what we do this year.
- 23:15SPEAKER_13: All right, we look forward to it.
- 23:17SPEAKER_13: Emily Proud, keep representing the Vols.
- 23:19SPEAKER_13: Thanks so much for all that you're doing on the CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports HQ.
- 23:25SPEAKER_13: Great job.
- 23:25SPEAKER_13: We're proud of you.
- 23:27SPEAKER_22: Thank you, Mike.
- 23:28SPEAKER_22: Pleasure to be here.
- 23:29SPEAKER_13: More coming up on the Mike Keith show delivered by Uber Eats right after this.
- 23:34SPEAKER_10: This is your home for coaches and players.
- 23:37SPEAKER_10: One-on-one from Rocky Top.
- 23:39SPEAKER_10: This is your ball network.
- 24:03SPEAKER_13: Jam Umarov's story is really something.
- 24:07SPEAKER_13: Outstanding young man that you meet right here on the mic.
- 24:12SPEAKER_20: I basically grew up in Georgia, so I'm basically American.
- 24:16SPEAKER_13: While you were born in Russia, you are of Turkish descent, right?
- 24:20SPEAKER_13: Yes, sir.
- 24:21SPEAKER_13: Yes, sir.
- 24:21SPEAKER_13: Okay.
- 24:22SPEAKER_13: So you're trying to become maybe just the second or third player of Turkish descent to make it to the NFL.
- 24:31SPEAKER_13: Tunch Ilkin, who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was one of their broadcasters for Turkey.
- 24:37SPEAKER_20: That's really wow.
- 24:38SPEAKER_20: That's really cool.
- 24:39SPEAKER_20: I didn't know that part.
- 24:40SPEAKER_13: I I went back all the way through your recruitment.
- 24:42unknown: Oh wow.
- 24:43unknown: Okay.
- 24:43SPEAKER_13: All the way back to through high school.
- 24:46SPEAKER_13: And you were recruited by heavy-duty people through the whole process.
- 24:51SPEAKER_13: You said family atmosphere at Tennessee was the difference.
- 24:56SPEAKER_20: Yes, sir.
- 24:57SPEAKER_13: As you've been here now going into year four, what has the family atmosphere been like for you even after you committed, signed, and have been within the program?
- 25:08SPEAKER_20: Yeah, I put into two different groups as in how they treated my family when I first stepped foot onto this campus and how they treated me when I was brought into this family on my family side, like they really made them feel at home and loved and cared about, whether it was asking questions and getting them answered, adding me into the family.
- 25:28SPEAKER_20: Anything I needed or wanted to know about, they'd include me in.
- 25:32SPEAKER_20: They wouldn't think a second thought about trying to help me out.
- 25:35SPEAKER_20: And it wasn't a frontline basis of just trying to make sure I'm okay.
- 25:39SPEAKER_20: It was trying to make sure I get home safe, make sure I understood everything from the new install or next practice.
- 25:47SPEAKER_13: Are you upbeat all the time?
- 25:49SPEAKER_20: Yes, sir.
- 25:49SPEAKER_20: I mean, you got to be the same person every day.
- 25:51SPEAKER_20: So I try to be.
- 25:53SPEAKER_13: All right.
- 25:54SPEAKER_13: From the standpoint of being upbeat every day, because every time I've ever encountered you, you are upbeat.
- 26:00SPEAKER_13: Is that just a natural thing, or does that come from one of your parents, one of your siblings?
- 26:05SPEAKER_13: How does that work?
- 26:06SPEAKER_20: Yeah, it's come from my whole family tree.
- 26:08SPEAKER_20: Like for my mom, dad, and grandmother, they'd work plenty of jobs, plenty of hours.
- 26:13SPEAKER_20: They'd come home and keep up with me, whether it was clean the house, uh, take care of me, or just anything I needed.
- 26:20SPEAKER_20: And seeing them come home real tired and still being able to have a smile on their face and take care of me, kind of instill that in me, whether I'm tired from workouts or practice or just everyday school, I gotta be able to uh keep a smile on my face because I mean, none of the stuff we do is actually hard compared to other people around the world that are suffering.
- 26:41SPEAKER_20: So comparing that in a bigger aspect really just hones me in on what I have in front of me.
- 26:47SPEAKER_13: Some guys end up growing into being a lineman.
- 26:51SPEAKER_13: From what you said in your background, you were big to start with, and that's what actually got you into playing football.
- 26:59SPEAKER_20: Yes, sir.
- 27:00SPEAKER_13: How big were you when you started playing football in eighth grade?
- 27:03SPEAKER_20: In eighth grade, uh shoot, I was probably around like 230, 40.
- 27:08SPEAKER_20: Wow.
- 27:08SPEAKER_20: I was really heavy and I wanted to lose weight.
- 27:11SPEAKER_20: So I I uh I only started playing in eighth grade because when I was a sixth grade, I was still pretty big and I was like, oh, I don't want people to pick on me.
- 27:19SPEAKER_20: So I waited until I was the big dog in middle school.
- 27:22SPEAKER_20: Got in there, lost weight.
- 27:24SPEAKER_20: Um my coaches on the last game we had, it was like you got to keep playing in high school.
- 27:28SPEAKER_20: Um you really have something in you to keep going.
- 27:31SPEAKER_20: I'm like, okay.
- 27:32SPEAKER_20: So I went into freshman year, played my freshman year.
- 27:35SPEAKER_20: Uh I was still pretty light coming out of eighth grade, but um we got new coaching staff at Denmark, put on a bunch of weight.
- 27:41SPEAKER_20: I was around uh 260, 270, but I finished high school at like 305.
- 27:46SPEAKER_13: Yeah, so your transformation into college, you've had to sort of reshape it more than you have to gain or lose so much?
- 27:55SPEAKER_20: Yeah, so I I mean I was kind of a scrawny guy, but since I was big, I weighed.
- 27:59SPEAKER_20: It was easy for me to gain weight.
- 28:01SPEAKER_20: Um, I put on a bunch of muscle in high school, and especially when I got here, I really transformed my body into a college lineman.
- 28:08SPEAKER_13: So when Derek Owings comes in to be the strength coach at Tennessee, what does he work with Sham Umaroff on, in particular in terms of your training?
- 28:18SPEAKER_20: Back, arms, just making our upper body real beefy and strong.
- 28:23SPEAKER_20: Just so, I mean, I already have a bigger lower body, but as an old lineman, you need to make sure you're real strong in the upper body to have real control on what's in front of you.
- 28:31SPEAKER_20: Wow.
- 28:32SPEAKER_13: Moving from tackle to guard, was that tough for you when you got to college?
- 28:37SPEAKER_20: When you're on the inside, a lot of stuff happens way faster.
- 28:40SPEAKER_20: So you got to get your hands and feet in the ground faster.
- 28:43SPEAKER_20: You got to be able to read the IDs that are bouncing in and out of the box.
- 28:47SPEAKER_20: So it was definitely a switch up, but it wasn't anything I couldn't do.
- 28:51SPEAKER_13: You played in Atlanta last year in uh the game against Syracuse, obviously at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
- 28:58SPEAKER_13: Going to play at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech.
- 29:01SPEAKER_13: What's that gonna be like for you?
- 29:03SPEAKER_20: Oh, it's gonna be awesome.
- 29:04SPEAKER_20: My my whole my whole family's in Georgia, so they're all gonna be able to come and see because it's in our backyard.
- 29:09SPEAKER_20: Um, it's gonna be awesome to play in Georgia Tech, because shoot, we'd always drive by anytime we'd go into Atlanta.
- 29:16SPEAKER_20: Um, it's just gonna feel like home, but it's gonna feel even better just being them because it's gonna be at home.
- 29:21SPEAKER_13: What is the bond of the Atlanta players who are on the Tennessee roster?
- 29:28SPEAKER_20: It's pretty cool just uh having a tight-knit group from the same area, being able to relate on how we grew up and the schools we went against and the tough amount of players we're going against.
- 29:38SPEAKER_20: It's cool just to see the relationships we have built already just being able to be relatable.
- 29:44SPEAKER_13: Are you surprised there are nearly 20 guys on this roster from the Atlanta Metro?
- 29:48SPEAKER_20: Uh I I would say surprised, but there's a lot of different guys in college now coming from a bunch of different places like Australia.
- 29:55SPEAKER_20: But uh, I mean, I love it.
- 29:57SPEAKER_20: So there's nothing I can be mad about.
- 29:59SPEAKER_13: All right, so the last question I have to ask you, I got to get an opinion on Uber Eats.
- 30:03SPEAKER_13: Are you ready?
- 30:04SPEAKER_20: Yeah.
- 30:04SPEAKER_13: All right, so here's the question.
- 30:06SPEAKER_13: All righty.
- 30:06SPEAKER_13: What does Sham Umaroff love most about Uber Eats?
- 30:10SPEAKER_20: I love how fast it just delivers.
- 30:12SPEAKER_20: Whether it's a middle of the night or a busy time in the afternoon during traffic jams four to five, it's always coming to my door.
- 30:19SPEAKER_13: What do you like to order from Uber Eats?
- 30:21SPEAKER_20: I like sandwiches, subs, you know.
- 30:23SPEAKER_20: Shout out to Jersey Mikes.
- 30:24SPEAKER_20: They give they great, uh, they make great sandwiches.
- 30:27SPEAKER_13: Nice.
- 30:27SPEAKER_13: Good stuff.
- 30:28SPEAKER_13: Jam Uberoff, thanks for the time.
- 30:30SPEAKER_20: Thank you.
- 30:31SPEAKER_13: Andy Brock has questions for me later in this edition of the Mike Keith Show.

- 31:29SPEAKER_16: We protect each other.

- 33:31SPEAKER_22: One roof at a time.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: Vaping isn't harmless.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: Most vapes contain nicotine.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: And nicotine can lead to addiction.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Especially while your brain is still developing.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: And once you're hooked, it's not easy to just stop whenever.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: You've got goals.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Sports, school, friends.

- 34:51SPEAKER_13: The Mike Keith show continues.
- 34:53SPEAKER_13: It's time for the Planet Fitness heavy lift.
- 34:56SPEAKER_13: It's never a heavy lift we get to visit with Jason Swain.
- 34:58SPEAKER_13: How are you?
- 34:59SPEAKER_13: Wonderful.
- 35:00SPEAKER_13: Great to have you with us.
- 35:01SPEAKER_13: By the way, remember the Planet Fitness black card.
- 35:04SPEAKER_13: It's what you need.

- 35:06SPEAKER_13: Remember at Planet Fitness.
- 35:08SPEAKER_13: We're all strong on this planet.
- 35:10SPEAKER_13: See Home Club for details.
- 35:12SPEAKER_13: Jason Swain is a part of the Vol Radio Network crew and has been for six years.
- 35:18SPEAKER_13: He just did his first game as the Vol Network's color analyst.
- 35:24SPEAKER_13: How'd you like it?
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: It was fun.
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: Oh, good time.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: And it's really fun when you score a lot of points, score a lot of touchdowns, defense, made some awesome stops.
- 35:33SPEAKER_04: It was it was a blast.
- 35:34SPEAKER_13: All right, so you've done broadcast for 16 years in a variety of roles.
- 35:39SPEAKER_13: How is it different watching a game as the color analyst?
- 35:43SPEAKER_04: It was it was very different.
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: I did high school a couple years ago.
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: This was a lot faster.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: It was a lot faster.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Uh athletes a lot, a lot different.
- 35:52SPEAKER_04: But it was just it was just fun to see how the play kind of developed and then see the play on a fold like Mike Matthews' touchdown.
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: Like you saw him run open, and then you saw Faison Brandon find him and score the touchdown.
- 36:06SPEAKER_04: So that was that was really cool.
- 36:07SPEAKER_13: And then you have to talk about it.
- 36:08SPEAKER_04: That's the best part.
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: That's the best part.
- 36:10SPEAKER_13: That's the fun part, right there.
- 36:11SPEAKER_13: Well, you did a great job.
- 36:12SPEAKER_13: Thank you, sir.
- 36:13SPEAKER_13: All right.
- 36:13SPEAKER_13: So what is the heavy lift about getting ready for game two after having finished game one?
- 36:21SPEAKER_04: This is where you make the most adjustments, the most improvements.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: You know, coaches talk to the players about what they're going to expect week one, but they don't really know until you play the game.
- 36:30SPEAKER_04: Now you can go back to the film room.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: You can show the players, all right, this is what we were talking about during fall camp, what we like, what we don't like.
- 36:36SPEAKER_04: And I think you're going to see some big time adjustments made from week one to week two.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: And there's a lot of correctable femme out there for Tennessee.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Uh that game against Ferman, a lot of positive, some weaknesses and some negatives too that you can harp on and fix.
- 36:49SPEAKER_13: This is a week that's always interesting in college because you come off a game where you win big and yet there are going to be some very frank conversations after the fact.
- 37:00SPEAKER_13: They're probably going to focus more on the negative than they accentuate the positive.
- 37:04SPEAKER_13: As a player, is that something you have to get used to?
- 37:08SPEAKER_13: Thinking you're walking in the building and gonna get love because you want to gain by 47 points, but knowing the coaches are going to be very direct?
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: You get better when you are comfortable being uncomfortable.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: And you're uncomfortable when sometimes when people are critiquing you and telling you, you know, that you gotta improve and get better and pointing out your mistakes.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: But the moment you feel comfortable in that role, that's when you really, really get better.
- 37:33SPEAKER_04: And so as an athlete, you get used to that.
- 37:35SPEAKER_04: You get used to your coach always picking and choosing the small things.
- 37:39SPEAKER_04: You can be 99% on the day, but that 1%, that coach is going to make sure that you work on a fix.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: That's how the team gets better, that's how the group gets better, and that's how you get better individually.
- 37:50SPEAKER_13: How do you expect Georgia Tech's defense to complicate the picture for Tennessee quarterback Faison Brandon?
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think they'll have some different pre-game, pre-pre-snap photos and pictures for uh Faison Brandon.
- 38:04SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be really important that he doesn't get confused and the coach stab do a really good job of simplifying things, uh receivers making plays, offensive line blocking, running backs doing their job.
- 38:15SPEAKER_04: But I expect some three safety looks.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: I expect Tennessee uh to be uh put in a position where they have to be really patient with the play call, take what the defense is giving you, maybe throw some check downs.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: But there's gonna be some opportunities to throw it over the top because you can't stop the running game and stop big plays over the top.
- 38:33SPEAKER_04: But I think it's gonna be really important for us to be patient.
- 38:36SPEAKER_04: All the teams that Tennessee has played over the last couple of years, they really try to stop the deep pass and the big play.
- 38:43SPEAKER_13: But with a running quarterback, how much does that change what a defense has to look at?
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: And Tennessee put some running plays on film.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: So now Georgia Tech has to account for that, especially in the red zone.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: There's gonna be some opportunities for the tight end.
- 38:59SPEAKER_04: We saw Ethan Davis get his first touchdown of the season, and then there's opportunities for the receivers as well on the outside.
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: So now it makes it a little bit harder for Georgia Tech uh to prep for Tennessee because now you have to account for Faison Brandon.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: And so he can throw it, he can run it, he can do everything right now, and uh that's that's really good for Joey Halls and Josh Hypel when it comes time to make the right play in the red zone.
- 39:21SPEAKER_13: How can the Tennessee wide receivers and tight ends help Fazon Brandon more against Georgia Tech?
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: Yards after catch.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: Yards off the catch, making those short passes, turning him into big gains.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: We saw Rodares Jackson do a really good job of that on the hitch route.
- 39:38SPEAKER_04: Uh just pick up more yards after the catch.
- 39:41SPEAKER_04: I think that's the best thing you can do.
- 39:42SPEAKER_04: And then catch everything, of course, right?
- 39:44SPEAKER_13: Mike Matthews kind of had a tough first half.
- 39:47SPEAKER_13: He was targeted multiple times and not able to do much, and then he went crazy in the third quarter.
- 39:53SPEAKER_04: What changed?
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: I think him pancaking the DB in the end zone, I think that was the turning point for him.
- 40:01SPEAKER_04: He's always physical, but I and I love that move.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: You pretend like you're gonna run a route, you pretend like you run a fade, and the DB is expecting you to catch the ball, and then you catch him off guard and you just power drive him into the ground.
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: That's my favorite part of Mike Matthews' play on Saturday.
- 40:16SPEAKER_04: I think that's what got him going.
- 40:18SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, he was fired up about it, and then he was able to make some plays after that in the air.
- 40:23SPEAKER_04: Braylon Staley didn't have a big day statistically.
- 40:25SPEAKER_13: Tennessee didn't need him to.
- 40:28SPEAKER_13: But as a receiver who is a star, like Braylon Staley, wide receiver of that caliber, you certainly know he wants more.
- 40:37SPEAKER_13: So does he push or is he patient as he goes into Georgia Tech looking to get his?
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: I think you do both.
- 40:47SPEAKER_13: Okay.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: I think he was so happy to see Mike Matthews.
- 40:50SPEAKER_04: Those guys are best buds, and there's nothing better than seeing, you know, your brother make a big play, especially coming off an offseason where there was questions about can Mike Matthews, you know, be consistent with the deep ball.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: Well, Mike did a really good job of that on Saturday.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: And so if you're Staly, you're you're just thrilled and happy.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: You got all the pub in the offseason.
- 41:09SPEAKER_04: It's just really cool to see your boy go out there and make some plays.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: This is a game where it's time for both of you to make a lot of plays.
- 41:16SPEAKER_04: Even the third receiver, there's gonna be opportunities out there because Georgia Tech wants to be tougher in the in the trenches.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: Didn't do a good job of that against Colorado.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: So there's gonna be opportunities on the outside.
- 41:27SPEAKER_13: Feels like Faison Brandon leaves the Furman game with trust in multiple wide receivers and tight ends.
- 41:35SPEAKER_13: You've talked before about uh you've got to gain your quarterback's trust if you're gonna get the ball.
- 41:40SPEAKER_13: They throw the ball to people that they trust.
- 41:43SPEAKER_13: Do you feel good about where he is with that trust factor out of week one headed to Georgia Tech?
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I don't think our receivers uh did a poor job catching the ball at all.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, there was one low pass or fourth down on a slant, but the ball could have been thrown better.
- 41:59SPEAKER_04: And so if you're phased on Brandon, you just keep giving our guys opportunities and they're gonna make you look good.
- 42:04SPEAKER_13: Tennessee certainly didn't show all that it's capable of with the tight end game.
- 42:09SPEAKER_13: Is that the biggest thing that they hid?
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: That 12th personnel is my favorite personnel grouping right now.
- 42:14SPEAKER_04: And uh we came out in that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I think Brahm and Ethan Davis are matchup nightmares.
- 42:20SPEAKER_04: Uh Thomas is a guy that I think he can be like Mouse Kitsman, a guy that came in, people thought he was just going to contribute in the running game, and then you were like, oh, wait, he can run, he can jump, he can catch the ball, he can be a weapon in the passing game.
- 42:34SPEAKER_04: And so I think our tight ends will be very, very important in our ability to be multiple.
- 42:38SPEAKER_13: Brain didn't have a catch.
- 42:40SPEAKER_13: Davis just had the one.
- 42:41SPEAKER_13: Thomas had two, but overall, they were in the ball game a lot.
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: They were.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: I think it takes a lot of pressure off the receivers.
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: You know, everyone's been talking about the third wide receiver, who's that going to be?
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: But if you can have the three or four tight ends that you can trust, especially you have two of those guys who are athletic, you can go three receivers with one tight end being in there because Braim is like a wide receiver.
- 43:05SPEAKER_04: Ethan Davis is like a wide receiver.
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's only two receivers in, but you split one of those tight ends out, it feels like it's a third wide receiver.
- 43:13SPEAKER_04: So I really like that that personnel grouping.
- 43:15SPEAKER_04: And Braim and Ethan Davis, two of the best I think will be in the SEC this year.
- 43:19SPEAKER_13: Tennessee had some depth in the slot, get dinged up in the win over Furman.
- 43:24SPEAKER_13: Who do you feel like gets a chance to step forward, maybe in that slot role that could get some more playing time?
- 43:31SPEAKER_13: Maybe we'll need to get some more playing time.
- 43:33SPEAKER_04: You know I like Tyree King.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: Tyree King.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: He's a young, he's a young guy.
- 43:37SPEAKER_04: Um, strength levels, that's a maybe a question.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: But when you have the guys that went down, man, those guys were ahead of him.
- 43:45SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, he's the naturally the next man up.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: Or you could, you know, move Staley to the outside or bring in another guy.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, Tennessee has a lot of weapons there at receiver.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: And uh for Kelsey Pope, there's options, but naturally I'm gonna say Tyree King.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Because he's kind of like the next guy up in that slot after Braylon Staley.
- 44:03SPEAKER_13: Jason Swain, look forward to seeing you at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday, Tennessee against Georgia Tech.
- 44:09SPEAKER_13: We're on the air at 4 30 Eastern.
- 44:11SPEAKER_13: Let's do it, man.
- 44:12SPEAKER_13: All right.
- 44:12SPEAKER_13: Jason Swain with us on the Mike Keith Show.
- 44:15SPEAKER_13: We've got more of the program coming up right after this.
- 44:18SPEAKER_10: Are you ready for the game?
- 44:20SPEAKER_10: The Mike Keith Show delivers your Mall Network.
- 44:31SPEAKER_13: It's a Wednesday.
- 44:45SPEAKER_13: So Andy, we'll ask you this segment of the program is presented by our friends to the right in the ball.
- 44:53SPEAKER_13: So Andy, ask.
- 44:55SPEAKER_09: It's time to ask.
- 44:56SPEAKER_09: Got some good ones.
- 44:57SPEAKER_09: Again, you can submit your questions.
- 44:58SPEAKER_09: The text line is 865-657-1278.
- 45:02SPEAKER_09: Josh from Cookville, we'll start with him.
- 45:04SPEAKER_09: Talent in the lineback room.
- 45:06SPEAKER_09: Obviously, you get someone back in Arion Carter this week.
- 45:08SPEAKER_09: It's going to add to it.
- 45:10SPEAKER_09: With that room being as talented as it is, how do you see Jim Knowles utilizing the skill sets of that group?
- 45:16SPEAKER_13: That's a great question because there are so many talented guys in there and versatile guys.
- 45:23SPEAKER_13: We saw Mari Campbell, Edwin Spillman had a good game, Jeremiah T.
- 45:27SPEAKER_13: Lander continues to play well.
- 45:29SPEAKER_13: We know what Ariane Carter is.
- 45:31SPEAKER_13: Overall, there is more depth even behind those guys.
- 45:35SPEAKER_13: So I think they will utilize them trying to get different combinations on the field situationally.
- 45:42SPEAKER_13: But I also think they have the flexibility, for example, with Spillman to play him at multiple positions.
- 45:48SPEAKER_13: So if he's a starter at one, maybe he's a backup at the other two, you know, and that gives you that ability to rotate and get those players on the field for as many snaps as possible because that group has tremendous versatility for the coordinator, meaning they know what to do, they can do a lot of different things, they can make sure that people get set the right way because there's a lot of good leadership there.
- 46:17SPEAKER_13: So I mean, I think it's invaluable for him to have that in his first year as defensive coordinator.
- 46:24SPEAKER_09: Justin from Hanging Limb, Tennessee.
- 46:26SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 46:26SPEAKER_09: He wants to know about Jaden Perlotti.
- 46:28SPEAKER_09: Obviously, a lot of people saw some of the big hits he delivered last year.
- 46:31SPEAKER_09: How does he fit in with the talent of this group?
- 46:33SPEAKER_09: What's his role?
- 46:34SPEAKER_13: Well, he's got a lot of skills.
- 46:35SPEAKER_13: And the the bottom line is with those guys in front of him, it's going to be hard to get him on the field over them.
- 46:42SPEAKER_13: So does he play situationally to do certain things that really take advantage of his speed and his burst?
- 46:52SPEAKER_13: You know, do you use him to cover?
- 46:55SPEAKER_13: Do you use him to pass rush?
- 46:57SPEAKER_13: Do you use him in whatever specific situations?
- 47:01SPEAKER_13: I think that's where Jim Knowles excels as a defensive coordinator is he can take a player like that and say, when we're doing this or the other team is in this situation, we want to find a way to get him on the field.
- 47:16SPEAKER_13: They will find a way to use Perlotti to help situationally this year, even if he can't play over some of those more veteran linebackers.
- 47:26SPEAKER_09: Mike Matthews had a big week.
- 47:27SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 47:28SPEAKER_09: Text line question from Bob from Memphis.
- 47:31SPEAKER_09: Hi Bob.
- 47:32SPEAKER_09: What do you think Mike Matthews' potential is this season after seeing him haul in two touchdowns, game one?
- 47:37SPEAKER_13: I think Mike Matthews' potential is unlimited because of the way he can run and the physicality with which he plays.
- 47:45SPEAKER_13: Uh, the block that he had in the first half of the game uh in the win over Furman says a lot about the way he wants to be physical.
- 47:54SPEAKER_13: He's gonna go get the football.
- 47:56SPEAKER_13: You know, we know he runs over 23 miles per hour.
- 48:00SPEAKER_13: The players say either he or KN Lee would be the fastest player on this team.
- 48:06SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 48:06SPEAKER_13: Uh just the combination of all of it with improved route running.
- 48:10SPEAKER_13: I think the sky's the limit for Mike Matthews.
- 48:12SPEAKER_09: Ben from Noxel wants to know Georgia Tech coming off the loss, I assume they're going to be desperate for a win this weekend.
- 48:20SPEAKER_09: Hostile environment potentially.
- 48:22SPEAKER_09: What do you talk about with Faison going into an environment like that?
- 48:25SPEAKER_09: How do you prepare a guy like that for his first road experience?
- 48:28SPEAKER_13: Just know that you're keeping things as straight and as simple as possible.
- 48:33SPEAKER_13: And I don't mean the game plan or, you know, you're only going to run simple plays, but that he just knows what his responsibilities are very clearly, what the expectations are very clearly, and you just stay on that path.
- 48:47SPEAKER_13: And, you know, if you think about it, Tennessee went out, they went right down the field on the first drive, and then they had problems on drives two and three.
- 48:55SPEAKER_13: They didn't change the plan.
- 48:56SPEAKER_13: They didn't, you know, say, oh, we're going to do something completely different.
- 49:01SPEAKER_13: They just stuck with what they were doing, and then they had success scoring on five straight drives.
- 49:06SPEAKER_13: I think that's the key for Faison Brandon is just to have the plan very clear, the expectations very clear, and then let him go play.
- 49:14SPEAKER_13: You want to keep things as clear as possible for him so that he's not having to overthink it and can go play.
- 49:22SPEAKER_09: So we we didn't get to see too much from the special teams in game one.
- 49:25SPEAKER_09: How important is that unit going to be in maybe a tighter situation with Georgia Tech?
- 49:29SPEAKER_09: Where details are going to be more important.
- 49:31SPEAKER_13: We did not see Cooper Ranvier try a field goal.
- 49:33SPEAKER_13: That's obviously going to be a big deal.
- 49:35SPEAKER_13: He was eight of eight on extra points.
- 49:37SPEAKER_13: Uh Turbiville can seemingly kick it out of the end zone on kickoffs anytime he wants.
- 49:43SPEAKER_13: In the return game, Quay Moss, I think, gives you a threat and punt returns.
- 49:48SPEAKER_13: Kickoff returns you never quite know because the opposition can certainly kick it out of the end zone as well.
- 49:53SPEAKER_13: But if Duan Morris gets a chance, we know he can take it the distance.
- 49:58SPEAKER_13: Jackson Ross is the whole card.
- 50:00SPEAKER_13: And I think that Jackson Ross is such a good punter from the standpoint of what he gives you, not just flipping the field.
- 50:09SPEAKER_13: And you know, for what they do with him, the the idea isn't to kick it 65 or 70 yards, although that would be great.
- 50:18SPEAKER_13: But the idea is to get over that 40-yard net, which they do.
- 50:24SPEAKER_13: You really don't want to punt.
- 50:25SPEAKER_13: You know, that's that's the whole goal is you don't want to punt.
- 50:28SPEAKER_13: But if you have to, you want to be able to take advantage of it.
- 50:33SPEAKER_13: And he is a real weapon in that way, which in a game on the road could be really, really big.
- 50:39SPEAKER_13: So, yeah, special teams, coverage units, Ranvier the kicker, uh, all of those things, they could be big factors.
- 50:46SPEAKER_09: John from Central Georgia wants to know what's the best non-football aspect of being back into the season for you.
- 50:54SPEAKER_13: The best non-football aspect of being back into the season, I think it's just rhythm.
- 50:59SPEAKER_13: I I think in this job, the thing that you love so much is you love the rhythm of we're gonna go to practice, we're gonna record a show, we're gonna prepare for the broadcast, we're gonna travel at this time.
- 51:12SPEAKER_13: And um that part of it is always the most fun because you know what you're aiming towards is the game.
- 51:20SPEAKER_13: You know, we work Sunday through Friday for the paycheck.
- 51:25SPEAKER_13: Saturday's free.
- 51:26SPEAKER_13: Yeah, and and that's that's really what is so exciting about this job is when you get to game day and you've put in all the work.
- 51:35SPEAKER_13: Um, I mean, it's thrilling.
- 51:37SPEAKER_13: I can't wait to see a game at Bobby Dodd's.
- 51:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that that's gonna be special.
- 51:41SPEAKER_13: Historic venue, one that I've known about my whole life and never gotten to attend a game there.
- 51:47SPEAKER_13: And uh really, really excited to have a chance to see it.
- 51:50SPEAKER_09: Neutral side games are fun, but having these home at homes makes it more special.
- 51:55SPEAKER_09: Absolutely.
- 51:55SPEAKER_13: All right, Andy asks.
- 51:57SPEAKER_13: That's it for this presented by First Horizon.
- 52:00SPEAKER_13: Well done.
- 52:01SPEAKER_13: You asked well, Andy.
- 52:02SPEAKER_13: I read and do it.
- 52:03SPEAKER_13: You you did it.
- 52:05SPEAKER_13: For Andy Brock, I might be like how much you're doing it in the news.
