- 0:00Speaker 1: If you've ever seen the movie Stripes with Bill Murray,
- 0:05Speaker 1: there's a scene where the drill instructor, the old krusty
- 0:09Speaker 1: Warren Oates, gets blown off a tower and he's gone
- 0:12Speaker 1: for a while, and they complete their basic training on
- 0:14Speaker 1: their own, and then he walks back in which none
- 0:18Speaker 1: of them expected to see. And you hear Bill Murray say,
- 0:22Speaker 1: it is a live It's kind of how I feel
- 0:27Speaker 1: being back in the studio today. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome
- 0:31Speaker 1: to the program here on AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 0:33Speaker 1: My name is Craig Way. I am back in the
- 0:36Speaker 1: studio today. Feels good to be back in the studio.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The producer of the program, Cameron Parker, is on his
- 0:43Speaker 1: way as we speak to Greenville, South Carolina. In fact,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I think he's in the Nashville International Airport connecting flights,
- 0:53Speaker 1: changing planes to get to Greenville. He'll join the Texas
- 0:56Speaker 1: women's basketball team there and he'll call the game tomorrow
- 1:04Speaker 1: at five o'clock as Texas will take on the winner
- 1:08Speaker 1: of the game between the seven seed and the ten
- 1:10Speaker 1: seed Ole Miss and Mississippi State, and he'll he'll have
- 1:15Speaker 1: the call of that with Kathy Arson tomorrow at the
- 1:17Speaker 1: Long words advance, he'll have the call of the Saturday
- 1:19Speaker 1: Summerfinal game for Texas, and if they advances the championship,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'll be there on Sunday to join him in Kathy
- 1:25Speaker 1: to call that one. But Cam is out. That means,
- 1:28Speaker 1: of course, the producer of the program is none other
- 1:32Speaker 1: than the guy I referred to as the sixth Man.
- 1:34Speaker 1: He's Andrew Zimmer and when he does it by himself,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we like to say it's the zimal hours. But today
- 1:40Speaker 1: he's just at the bridge in the captain's chair making
- 1:43Speaker 1: sure that everything goes smoothly, and it's gone smoothly the
- 1:47Speaker 1: past couple of days.
- 1:48Speaker 2: How are you doing today's m I'm doing great, Craig.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm glad that you're both feet on the ground ready
- 1:54Speaker 2: to do a show today. This is exciting in the studio.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's good to be It's been a so
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm glad to be back.
- 2:03Speaker 3: And I think the people who have listened to the.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Programs that I've done over the years, the you know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: whether it was here the first time when I was
- 2:12Speaker 1: here for nineteen years, and then when I was across
- 2:16Speaker 1: town for six and a half years, and then back
- 2:18Speaker 1: here over almost two years back here. It's been almost
- 2:22Speaker 1: two years back here in the iHeart Family and back
- 2:26Speaker 1: at a thirteen.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Under the Zone.
- 2:28Speaker 1: During all of those years, I think fans, we've got
- 2:32Speaker 1: a lot of loyal listeners. They get what this time
- 2:36Speaker 1: of year delivers. They get what it delivers to them
- 2:40Speaker 1: as fans, and they get what it challenges me as
- 2:44Speaker 1: a broadcaster to do, especially as the play by play
- 2:46Speaker 1: voice of the University of Texas, because as you know, I,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you know, broadcast the football games, the men's basketball games,
- 2:53Speaker 1: the women's basketball games when there's not a conflict, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: the baseball games, and so it means especially there's two
- 3:01Speaker 1: times a year, and people who have heard this program
- 3:04Speaker 1: have heard me refer to them, there's two times a
- 3:07Speaker 1: year that I refer to as the overlaps. One starts
- 3:12Speaker 1: about around the tenth of November or so until now
- 3:17Speaker 1: because of the extended college football playoff, it could go
- 3:19Speaker 1: as late as early January. There's that, and it overlaps
- 3:24Speaker 1: football with men's and women's college basketball. The one that's
- 3:27Speaker 1: even a little more maniacal and a little crazy starts
- 3:30Speaker 1: like Valentine's Weekend last month, and it'll run all the
- 3:35Speaker 1: way probably till the end of March, maybe even in
- 3:39Speaker 1: early April if the Texas women make a final four
- 3:42Speaker 1: run or something like that happens. So there's almost two
- 3:46Speaker 1: months of that where there's a lot happening, and I'm
- 3:50Speaker 1: jumping between airports and commercial flights and charter flights and
- 3:53Speaker 1: rental cars and you know, things like that, and getting
- 3:57Speaker 1: to where I need to be to call a game.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So that's what happens this time of year. So for that,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Andrew Zimmel, I am grateful for your service as the
- 4:09Speaker 1: sixth man who can step in and carry the program
- 4:13Speaker 1: as you will tomorrow when I head out to the
- 4:15Speaker 1: ballpark to do ufc Uish falk Field's presentation of Long
- 4:19Speaker 1: Worn Baseball as Texas will open the series against Santa Clara.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I will check in with you from the ballpark. But
- 4:24Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Have you had fun these past.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Several days, Oh, a ton of fun. I had a
- 4:30Speaker 2: lot of fun yesterday because we had so much audio
- 4:33Speaker 2: from Vick Schaeffer and Madison Booker and that was great stuff.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And I love Madison Booker. I think that she is
- 4:41Speaker 2: maybe my favorite athlete right now. On the forty Acres Craig.
- 4:44Speaker 1: She's well be high praise, but certainly well founded given
- 4:49Speaker 1: the fact that she's the SEC Player of the Year,
- 4:52Speaker 1: she was the Freshman the Year last year, she's a
- 4:54Speaker 1: Cheryl Miller Award finalist again, and she's the scoringly I
- 5:01Speaker 1: would submit to you that while she is the machine
- 5:05Speaker 1: that makes this Texas women's team go, the heart and
- 5:09Speaker 1: soul of it is going to be Rory Harmon with
- 5:12Speaker 1: what she does and what she has come through. And
- 5:14Speaker 1: then you have the other pieces that makes such a
- 5:17Speaker 1: big difference, Shay Holly, who's really kind of the brains
- 5:21Speaker 1: of the operation, and Taylor Jones who's kind of the
- 5:24Speaker 1: might and the muscle inside, along with Kyla Oldacre, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: then they've got the depth that they have. That's why
- 5:30Speaker 1: this is a serious final for a contender. Now, in
- 5:35Speaker 1: order to continue to be a final four contender, you
- 5:38Speaker 1: have to have a good seed in the NCAA Tournament,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and a favorable draw helps that kind of stuff, and
- 5:49Speaker 1: your team has to be playing well. So I think
- 5:52Speaker 1: all of that stuff will be out there in front
- 5:55Speaker 1: of Texas. Right now, they're the number one ranked team
- 5:59Speaker 1: in the country the polls. That's not the NCAA Tournament
- 6:02Speaker 1: selection thingam. However, we saw a week ago last Thursday,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the second early reveal for the NCAA Tournament selection Committee,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and they had moved Texas up to the number two
- 6:18Speaker 1: on the seed line. Charlie Cream, the bracketologist for ESPN,
- 6:22Speaker 1: then after UCLA lost that night to USC moved Texas
- 6:26Speaker 1: into the one slot.
- 6:27Speaker 3: He still has them in the one slot. We'll see.
- 6:30Speaker 1: The main thing I think for is Texas women's team
- 6:33Speaker 1: has to continue to play at a high level. They'd
- 6:34Speaker 1: love to win the SEC championship, the tournament championship. If
- 6:38Speaker 1: already claimed their share of the regular season title, they
- 6:42Speaker 1: would love to win to win that tournament title as well.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But I do think if they win a game, especially
- 6:50Speaker 1: if they win two, but winning at least one should
- 6:53Speaker 1: probably cement their status as a one seed. And if
- 6:55Speaker 1: they get to the final, I think it's cements their
- 6:57Speaker 1: status as one.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Getting to bracket its way to Birmingham.
- 7:03Speaker 1: We've explained this before that there are two regional Sweet
- 7:08Speaker 1: sixteen slash Elite eight sites in women's basketball.
- 7:11Speaker 3: They run two.
- 7:12Speaker 1: At each regional site. So the two regional sites this
- 7:16Speaker 1: year are Spokane in Birmingham, and since Texas has been
- 7:20Speaker 1: up to the Pacific Northwest the past three of the
- 7:22Speaker 1: past four years. They'd love to have an opportunity to
- 7:25Speaker 1: play closer to home, and they would like to be
- 7:26Speaker 1: in Birmingham. I think they're in really good shape to
- 7:29Speaker 1: do that. I think I'll win tomorrow of the old
- 7:31Speaker 1: miss Mississippi State winner probably cements it. It's certainly I
- 7:36Speaker 1: think cements them as the number one seed if they win.
- 7:40Speaker 1: If they are to win a semi final, which could
- 7:42Speaker 1: be against LSU on Saturday, I think it probably would
- 7:45Speaker 1: lock them into being in Birmingham. And if they win
- 7:48Speaker 1: the whole thing, I think they're locked into being the
- 7:50Speaker 1: number one overall seed.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I think they could have all that.
- 7:52Speaker 1: We'll see just to update you on the women's tournament,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and then we're going to tell you what else we've
- 7:58Speaker 1: got coming on the program today. They are in the
- 8:01Speaker 1: second round. There's already been a final this morning. There's
- 8:04Speaker 1: already been a lower seed advance. Actually it's higher seed,
- 8:07Speaker 1: excuse me. Vanderbilt, the eight seed beat the nine seed
- 8:10Speaker 1: Tennessee eighty four to seventy six. Vandermilt now has to
- 8:14Speaker 1: take on South Carolina. That would be tomorrow at eleven o'clock.
- 8:17Speaker 1: In the morning our time, and the game that has
- 8:22Speaker 1: followed that one is going on right now between the
- 8:26Speaker 1: five seed Oklahoma and the twelve seed Georgia, and there's
- 8:31Speaker 1: about seven and a half minutes to go in that game,
- 8:32Speaker 1: and right now Oklahoma leeds A by fifteen points. They
- 8:34Speaker 1: are at fifty five to forty, so seeds going to
- 8:37Speaker 1: form so far winter That game will play at one
- 8:41Speaker 1: point thirty tomorrow afternoon against the number four seed Kentucky.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Then you get to the bottom of the bracket.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Mississippi plays Mississippi State, oh miss against Mississippi State.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That'll be this afternoon at five o'clock.
- 8:55Speaker 1: The winner of that game we'll play Texas tomorrow at
- 8:57Speaker 1: five union here on one of three point.
- 8:59Speaker 3: One FM, Austin's EIGHTES station.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And then the night cap tomorrow night will be the
- 9:03Speaker 1: sixth seed Alabama against eleven seed Florida and the winner
- 9:06Speaker 1: of that will get LSU at seven point thirty tomorrow night.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So that gets you caught up on the SEC women's tournament.
- 9:15Speaker 3: We'll keep you updated on that. Now.
- 9:18Speaker 1: With regard to the men's tournament, we talked quite a
- 9:20Speaker 1: bit about this. The Longhorn men did themselves a great
- 9:26Speaker 1: Service helped themselves out tremendously by virtue of that win
- 9:30Speaker 1: at twenty fifth rank Mississippi State on Tuesday night, winning
- 9:35Speaker 1: it in overtime eighty seven eighty two.
- 9:37Speaker 3: It does not have them in the NCAA Tournament field yet.
- 9:39Speaker 1: In fact, most bracketologists, including Joe Lenardi, who's kind of
- 9:43Speaker 1: the chief among all of this, still have Texas on
- 9:45Speaker 1: that line of first four out. Doesn't mean they won't
- 9:47Speaker 1: get in, but it means they go from one must
- 9:50Speaker 1: win game to another. I would submit to you Saturday night,
- 9:53Speaker 1: Senior Night at home against Oklahoma, another bubble team on
- 9:58Speaker 1: the outside trying to play its way into the field.
- 10:01Speaker 1: That's Saturday night at seven o'clock, and Texas is in
- 10:05Speaker 1: the situation of needing to win that game.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And even then I.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Don't know that they would be in unless there were
- 10:12Speaker 1: all kinds of losses from other bubble teams. It would
- 10:15Speaker 1: probably take a win Saturday and a win next week,
- 10:19Speaker 1: at least in their first game at the SEC Tournament,
- 10:23Speaker 1: which looks like it's going to be against Georgia, and
- 10:26Speaker 1: it looks like it'll be at two thirty in the
- 10:28Speaker 1: afternoon next Wednesday afternoon. Of course, you would hear that
- 10:32Speaker 1: right here on thirteen under the zone. It'd be next
- 10:35Speaker 1: Wednesday afternoon. They're almost certainly locked into that two thirty
- 10:40Speaker 1: time slot as either the twelve seed or the thirteen seed.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It's not mathematically for sure, because if they were to
- 10:47Speaker 1: lose local whomens some other things happened, they could wind
- 10:49Speaker 1: up actually as the fourteen.
- 10:50Speaker 3: They'd take other tie breaks.
- 10:52Speaker 1: But if they win, they're definitely in that twelve versus
- 10:55Speaker 1: thirteen matchup next Wednesday afternoon at two thirty. And I
- 10:59Speaker 1: think a win that game, if they win Saturday, win
- 11:01Speaker 1: that game might be enough to get them into the field.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Might be depends on what else is going on. And
- 11:06Speaker 1: at this time of year. You know how this works
- 11:08Speaker 1: if you are a fan of college basketball and a
- 11:12Speaker 1: fan of March Madness, and a fan of what's called
- 11:14Speaker 1: Championship Week throughout all of next week. It actually really
- 11:17Speaker 1: began this week. And there are, by the way, men's
- 11:20Speaker 1: not just women's. There are men's Division one conference tournaments
- 11:24Speaker 1: going on right now that will help shape the field
- 11:28Speaker 1: of sixty eight. Some of the mid major and smaller
- 11:31Speaker 1: conferences have already started their tournaments so they can get
- 11:35Speaker 1: their championship games on national television on the ESPN. But
- 11:41Speaker 1: you want chalk to happen if you're a team in
- 11:44Speaker 1: that kind of bubble situation as the Longhorns are, So
- 11:46Speaker 1: they got to handle their business and then they may
- 11:49Speaker 1: need a little bit of help as well. By the way,
- 11:51Speaker 1: tonight is our final seasonal edition of Longhorn Weekly with
- 11:57Speaker 1: Rodney Terry from Pluckers the West Campus. Last chance of
- 12:01Speaker 1: the season to come out and visit with RT. Submit questions,
- 12:04Speaker 1: you have question cards, you have questions for the coach,
- 12:07Speaker 1: and as always, we have a special guest tonight, Arthur Kluma.
- 12:12Speaker 1: As you know, Art is getting ready to play his
- 12:15Speaker 1: final home game as a Texas Longhorn the Senior and
- 12:20Speaker 1: he will join us tonight at Pluckers the West Campus
- 12:25Speaker 1: locations at six o'clock. You'll hear it live here on
- 12:27Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone. So if you can come on
- 12:31Speaker 1: out and enjoy some great wings and great conversation talking
- 12:34Speaker 1: long worn basketball headed into this final week of the
- 12:36Speaker 1: regular season. All right, a couple other things coming up
- 12:39Speaker 1: after this break. You're talking about a shift. We're talking
- 12:43Speaker 1: Texas Men's tennis, the outstanding men's tennis program with head
- 12:46Speaker 1: coach Bruce Burg. They are hosting Mississippi State tonight and
- 12:50Speaker 1: Bruce is nice enough to take a few minutes to visit.
- 12:53Speaker 3: With us to preview that.
- 12:53Speaker 1: They also have Auburn coming in on Saturday, so we'll
- 12:56Speaker 1: do that. We have inconceivable later on this hour, in
- 13:01Speaker 1: the three o'clock hour, we're going to hear from Jim
- 13:02Speaker 1: Schlosnagle some sound from the long WRN baseball head coach,
- 13:06Speaker 1: whose team is now won ten in a row and
- 13:08Speaker 1: getting ready to open their final non conference weekend series
- 13:13Speaker 1: before they start conference play with Santa Clara coming into town,
- 13:16Speaker 1: the Broncos from the West Coast Conference. That's tomorrow evening
- 13:21Speaker 1: at six thirty Saturday at two o'clock, Sunday at one o'clock,
- 13:25Speaker 1: and you'll hear all three games here on the zone.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And so we'll hear from Jim Schlosnagel coming up next
- 13:32Speaker 1: hour and in the four o'clock hour.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Among other things that we'll do.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Gene Watson from Chicago White Sox front office joins us
- 13:40Speaker 1: we're getting closer to the start of baseball's regular season.
- 13:45Speaker 1: We're actually only about twelve days away.
- 13:49Speaker 3: From an actually beginning.
- 13:51Speaker 1: It'll begin in Japan with the Cubs and Dodgers playing,
- 13:53Speaker 1: but that'll be the first series. But we're three weeks
- 13:57Speaker 1: out really from the start of the Major League Baseball season,
- 14:00Speaker 1: so Gino will join us in the four o'clock hour
- 14:02Speaker 1: to get us updated on them on that. All right,
- 14:04Speaker 1: up next, we visit with Bruce Burg, Texas men's tennis coach,
- 14:07Speaker 1: when we continue right here on thirteen under the zone
- 14:11Speaker 1: to twenty here on this Thursday afternoon.
- 14:13Speaker 3: I'm glad to have you with us on the program.
- 14:17Speaker 1: We said there was an awful lot to discuss with
- 14:19Speaker 1: the University of Texas athletics, both the men's and women's
- 14:22Speaker 1: basketball teams, Baseball, softball going really well, and he she
- 14:26Speaker 1: had noticed long worn men's tennis has ranked fourth in
- 14:30Speaker 1: the country and they have a big SEC match tonight
- 14:34Speaker 1: against Mississippi State and then Auburn coming in on Saturday.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Very pleased to be joined on the hotline by our
- 14:39Speaker 1: good friend the head coach of Texas men's tennis, Bruce Burg. Bruce,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I appreciate you taking the time on the match day.
- 14:45Speaker 3: How are you?
- 14:52Speaker 1: And we might have lost him there, Andrew could we'll
- 14:57Speaker 1: see if we can bring Bruce back can on this
- 15:01Speaker 1: uh to do this the the long worn tennis team
- 15:04Speaker 1: by the way, uh is is Bruce?
- 15:07Speaker 3: You back with us now?
- 15:11Speaker 4: Uh?
- 15:12Speaker 1: Okay, all right, well we'll see if we can uh
- 15:15Speaker 1: we can get him back on board was in the meantime.
- 15:17Speaker 1: What I can tell you about. Uh, we'll try one
- 15:19Speaker 1: more time. Hey, Bruce, she with us?
- 15:21Speaker 3: Now?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Hello, Bruce, she with us? Okay, Uh, he might not
- 15:30Speaker 1: be able to hear us Andrews. We'll we'll try to
- 15:32Speaker 1: see if we can uh uh make that work. I
- 15:34Speaker 1: know we had a little bit of issue that when
- 15:36Speaker 1: I when I was calling in yesterday.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Uh, but we'll see if we can get that all together.
- 15:42Speaker 1: In the meantime, what we were saying about Texas men's tennis, Uh,
- 15:46Speaker 1: they are uh six and one since the last time
- 15:49Speaker 1: we visited with Bruce. That one loss was to Wake
- 15:51Speaker 1: Forrest in the summifinals of the i T eight indoors
- 15:54Speaker 1: uh and that was four three and Wake went on
- 15:57Speaker 1: to win the championship. They're currently the number one ranked
- 15:59Speaker 1: team in the country. But Texas has worked really well
- 16:03Speaker 1: and they have wins against number one at the time
- 16:08Speaker 1: TCU fourteenth ranked Texas A and M. That was a
- 16:11Speaker 1: non conference match at the ITA Indoors, number five Virginia
- 16:15Speaker 1: and they're three and oh in the SEC with wins
- 16:17Speaker 1: over Vanderbilt and ole Miss at home and Florida on
- 16:20Speaker 1: the road. All right, let's see if we can drive
- 16:21Speaker 1: one more time. Hey, Bruce, you able to hear us?
- 16:23Speaker 3: Now?
- 16:25Speaker 5: I can?
- 16:26Speaker 3: I can?
- 16:26Speaker 5: No one there to keep us apart.
- 16:29Speaker 1: All right, Well, I appreciate you take you the time
- 16:31Speaker 1: on the match day. Let me get your let me
- 16:35Speaker 1: get your thoughts on the way things have been going,
- 16:37Speaker 1: because I know that you have to be pleased since
- 16:40Speaker 1: the last time we visited. Your group is six and one.
- 16:44Speaker 1: That one losses to Wake Forest, a pretty good team.
- 16:46Speaker 1: They're number one, and that was in that semifinals with
- 16:49Speaker 1: the ITA Indoors. But I was just recapping how things
- 16:53Speaker 1: had gone with wins over TCU, Texas A and M
- 16:55Speaker 1: fifth rank Virginia three and o in the SEC. Now
- 16:58Speaker 1: and then we always like to say everybody's first foray
- 17:01Speaker 1: from the University of Texas into the SEC. And you're
- 17:04Speaker 1: off to a good start with the wins over Vanderbilt
- 17:06Speaker 1: and Ole Miss at home and Florida on the road.
- 17:08Speaker 1: So how would you characterize how your club is playing
- 17:11Speaker 1: right now.
- 17:13Speaker 6: Yeah. Now, I've been really happy with the results, but
- 17:17Speaker 6: especially with the way the guys are out there striving
- 17:21Speaker 6: to get better every day and taking ownership in the team.
- 17:23Speaker 6: And it's really accept for several of them stepping up
- 17:27Speaker 6: his leaders, which is kind of interesting because we had
- 17:30Speaker 6: so much turnover from last year's team that it's really
- 17:33Speaker 6: nice to see that the culture is staying strong and
- 17:36Speaker 6: we're striving to be the best by the end of
- 17:38Speaker 6: the year.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Well, you've got some guys who have some outstanding dual
- 17:43Speaker 1: match records in their singles. I look at Tim melugu
- 17:48Speaker 1: Is nine and one, Sebastian Gorney's niney four, nine and four, and.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Then Pierre Eves.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Bailey really seems to have found his game both physically
- 17:56Speaker 1: and mentally.
- 17:57Speaker 3: He's ten and oer right now.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Did you have a good few about him going into
- 18:01Speaker 1: those dual match records this season?
- 18:05Speaker 6: I did, mostly because of the way he seems to
- 18:10Speaker 6: have matured. Not that he was an imagery kid before,
- 18:13Speaker 6: but you know, he would be very much in a
- 18:18Speaker 6: victim sometimes of the way things were going, you know,
- 18:20Speaker 6: whether he was healthy or not healthy.
- 18:22Speaker 5: He thinks, you know, if.
- 18:23Speaker 6: He lost the last match or won.
- 18:25Speaker 5: The last match.
- 18:26Speaker 6: Sometimes he would be very much at the mercy of
- 18:30Speaker 6: his circumstances and that would affect his mental game. And
- 18:34Speaker 6: he's just seemed to come into his own with respect
- 18:37Speaker 6: to his maturity and prepares very well for each match,
- 18:40Speaker 6: and it's very hard to rattle him. And he's been healthy,
- 18:43Speaker 6: So with that in mind, he's got you know, he's
- 18:46Speaker 6: proven over the years that he can beat a lot
- 18:47Speaker 6: of great players. So yeah, it doesn't shock be given
- 18:51Speaker 6: the way I saw his mentality evolve over the fall.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Well, you also have had some veterans show how good
- 19:00Speaker 1: they can be. Jonah braswell, we've talked about before, and
- 19:03Speaker 1: he's eight and two, and Timo I mentioned and Sebastian
- 19:06Speaker 1: I got to ask you about your freshman Oliver. It's
- 19:09Speaker 1: it's owed your car, isn't it? From Estonia? And he's
- 19:12Speaker 1: off to an eight.
- 19:14Speaker 5: That's right.
- 19:15Speaker 6: Yeah, No, he's been great, and it's the nice thing
- 19:17Speaker 6: about him is, you know, it's tough.
- 19:19Speaker 7: To come in in January and be thrust right.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Away into the dual matches. You're playing dual matches within
- 19:25Speaker 6: a week from being on campus. It's not always an
- 19:27Speaker 6: easy thing to do, especially for those guys who are
- 19:30Speaker 6: coming from a different country and culture. But it's been
- 19:33Speaker 6: fun because we've really seen him improving virtually week by
- 19:37Speaker 6: week and almost every time he steps on the court,
- 19:39Speaker 6: and he's got a he's a big guy with a
- 19:41Speaker 6: big game, and he's sitting seamlessly with the team.
- 19:45Speaker 5: So yeah, it's been a lot of fun.
- 19:46Speaker 6: I think he's going to be, no doubt, a star
- 19:49Speaker 6: and an upper lineup player during his career here.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you've got a couple of guys splitting time at
- 19:55Speaker 1: single Sebastian Eerics in his seven and three Lucas Brown
- 19:58Speaker 1: a seven to one.
- 19:58Speaker 3: How's that. It looks like it's worked out well so far.
- 20:02Speaker 8: So far.
- 20:03Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, sometimes the issue.
- 20:05Speaker 6: About which of them is going to play takes care
- 20:07Speaker 6: of itself because maybe somebody is a little banged up,
- 20:10Speaker 6: either one of them or somebody else. And we're fortunate
- 20:12Speaker 6: to have at least seven guys that we feel really
- 20:15Speaker 6: comfortable with being out there. My goal for each of
- 20:18Speaker 6: them is to never have just like it was last
- 20:20Speaker 6: year for Lucas. I never want them to go more
- 20:22Speaker 6: than a week without competing. I still don't know which
- 20:25Speaker 6: one is, you know, the right one to be out there.
- 20:29Speaker 6: So in many, many days they'll both been playing. Some
- 20:31Speaker 6: days just wonderful movie playing, but they've they've had a
- 20:35Speaker 6: really good mentality about it.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Or super supportive of each other.
- 20:38Speaker 6: So yeah, So Bastan Erickson is a really good player also,
- 20:40Speaker 6: and he's he's done very well for us, and he
- 20:43Speaker 6: didn't have a good match the last time you played,
- 20:45Speaker 6: but that's just one day. And Lucas is just a
- 20:48Speaker 6: fiery kid and a fighter, and he's you know, really
- 20:51Speaker 6: to me, he epitomizes everything it means to be a
- 20:55Speaker 6: Texas Longhorn.
- 20:57Speaker 1: You have been able to get two of the three
- 21:00Speaker 1: doubles points in the SEC matches.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Do you like what you have there?
- 21:04Speaker 1: Are you still looking for an uptick in terms of
- 21:06Speaker 1: the double side of things?
- 21:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean we've been winning most of the double points.
- 21:12Speaker 6: We've probably lost one, you know.
- 21:16Speaker 7: For we've probably lost We've probably.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Got one or two less wins and doubles points than
- 21:22Speaker 6: we do wins in dual match records, and.
- 21:24Speaker 7: So yeah, no, we're not quite satisfied with it.
- 21:28Speaker 5: We definitely think we.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Have the skills and the ability, but we're still not
- 21:33Speaker 6: thrilled with the consistency of the level of our execution.
- 21:36Speaker 6: So tonight it's going to be a little different. We're
- 21:39Speaker 6: changing the lineup a little bit again. This time it's not,
- 21:42Speaker 6: you know, it's not so much a search for some
- 21:44Speaker 6: magic chemistry that's going to be the answer. I think
- 21:47Speaker 6: sometimes that's pivot, but I think more important is just
- 21:50Speaker 6: the consistency of our execution and understanding about how physical
- 21:55Speaker 6: and intense you need to be in what you know,
- 21:59Speaker 6: in what really is a sprint for about thirty minutes
- 22:01Speaker 6: of doubles play. So tonight we're going to have, most
- 22:05Speaker 6: likely we're going to have Oliver and Pierre playing together
- 22:08Speaker 6: at number one, and Lucas and Timo at two, and
- 22:11Speaker 6: most likely Sebastian Korsny with either Jonah or Eric Sin
- 22:15Speaker 6: at three.
- 22:16Speaker 5: So it's a little bit different.
- 22:18Speaker 6: My goal is for after this weekend to be kind
- 22:20Speaker 6: of set and just have our three teams and just.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Go with them for the rest of the season. That's
- 22:24Speaker 5: what we look to do.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Texas Tennis men's head coach Bruce Burger joining us here
- 22:28Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone. Let me get your thoughts
- 22:30Speaker 1: in Mississippi State looks like they're off to a really
- 22:32Speaker 1: good start. Twelve and two, two and one in the conference.
- 22:34Speaker 1: What kind of challenge does the do the Bulldogs present
- 22:37Speaker 1: for you tonight?
- 22:39Speaker 9: Yeah, they're good.
- 22:40Speaker 6: I mean, they're definitely They're definitely one of the teams
- 22:43Speaker 6: that we think is going to be the stiffest competition
- 22:46Speaker 6: for us in the SEC. There's no doubt that most
- 22:50Speaker 6: coaches would agree that they're a top three SEC team
- 22:54Speaker 6: and with one of the tea programs that has a
- 22:58Speaker 6: chance to compete for the championships with a lot of
- 23:01Speaker 6: respect for their coaches.
- 23:02Speaker 5: And the consistency.
- 23:04Speaker 6: In the consistency with which they compete every match, it's
- 23:07Speaker 6: been a high level program for a while. They're really
- 23:10Speaker 6: good at the top of the lineup, and they're really.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Good in doubles.
- 23:14Speaker 6: And I think we're gonna have to be on our
- 23:16Speaker 6: best mental, mental game tonight.
- 23:18Speaker 5: To have a good shot.
- 23:20Speaker 3: And then you got to turn around.
- 23:21Speaker 1: You got Auburn coming in on Saturday, and it's it's
- 23:23Speaker 1: not exactly that I mean, they're they're ranked thirty seconds,
- 23:25Speaker 1: so it's not exactly like you're you're taking on chop
- 23:28Speaker 1: liver there too. It looks like it's a good, uh
- 23:31Speaker 1: front end, back end series of challenge this.
- 23:33Speaker 6: Weekend sure, sure, I mean really, all the SEC teams
- 23:37Speaker 6: are good, but you know, Auburn's has definitely got a
- 23:40Speaker 6: good got a good program, so we have respect for
- 23:42Speaker 6: them too. And we just you know, we just came
- 23:44Speaker 6: back from Florida. We only had two days of practice here,
- 23:47Speaker 6: but we're ready and Mississippi State's gonna be tough. Like
- 23:49Speaker 6: you said, we turn it around and play Auburn, and
- 23:51Speaker 6: then two days later after that we're on the road
- 23:56Speaker 6: back to TCU for our last non conference match against
- 23:59Speaker 6: against TCU again, so we got a lot coming out.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Yeah, indeed, all right, again, it's tonight at six o'clock.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Why not head over to the Texas Tennis Center to
- 24:09Speaker 1: see what should be a splendid match tonight with Mississippi
- 24:13Speaker 1: State and then Saturday afternoon at one o'clock against Auburn. Bruce,
- 24:16Speaker 1: it's always a great deal of pleasure to visit with you.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I appreciate you taking the time and best of luck
- 24:21Speaker 1: tonight and over the weekend.
- 24:24Speaker 5: I appreciate it.
- 24:25Speaker 7: Thanks for having me on you bet.
- 24:27Speaker 1: All right, that's Bruce Park, Texas men's tennis head coach,
- 24:31Speaker 1: coming up. Will bring you today's edition of Inconceivable and
- 24:34Speaker 1: we continue on thirteen under the zone.
- 24:37Speaker 10: Inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Us in that far. I don't think I miss? What
- 24:45Speaker 3: do you think of miss?
- 24:47Speaker 1: Here's what inconceivable means on a Thursday afternoon, as we
- 24:51Speaker 1: roll through it, whenever possible, whenever possible, we like to
- 24:57Speaker 1: bring you out aplickable a fast food update. Andrew Zimmil
- 25:04Speaker 1: strikes me as the kind of guy who occasionally dabbles
- 25:06Speaker 1: in the fast food arts?
- 25:07Speaker 3: Am I correct on that? Zim?
- 25:09Speaker 2: You caught me craig I ate in and out today?
- 25:13Speaker 3: Did you really? Okay?
- 25:16Speaker 5: Lunch?
- 25:17Speaker 3: Okay? Where do you stand with Chick fil A?
- 25:21Speaker 2: You know, I'm just getting back into it. I'm a fan.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I got a gift card over Christmas.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Well that's good, okay, I should let you know that.
- 25:30Speaker 1: In addition to the regular offerings on the menu, which include,
- 25:38Speaker 1: you know, the regular grilled or the original chicken sandmich,
- 25:41Speaker 1: all that stuff, they're bringing back a couple of things.
- 25:44Speaker 1: First of all, the Smokehouse barbecue bacon sandwich.
- 25:48Speaker 3: There's that. Then they've got.
- 25:52Speaker 1: One, two, three, four new Spring drinks. Tell me if
- 25:58Speaker 1: any of these strike your fans. There's a pineapple dragon
- 26:02Speaker 1: fruit frosted lemonade.
- 26:05Speaker 3: That sounds like a lot.
- 26:07Speaker 1: There's just a regular pineapple dragonfruit lemon lemonade, a pineapple
- 26:12Speaker 1: dragon fruit iced tea, and a pineapple dragon fruit sunjoy.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Any of that hold any interest for you?
- 26:21Speaker 1: There?
- 26:22Speaker 2: The iced tea catches my attention. But the problem is
- 26:25Speaker 2: that's a mouthful. If I'm trying to do that at
- 26:27Speaker 2: the drive through.
- 26:29Speaker 3: That's a good point.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Let me have that pineapple dragon fruit frosted lemonade. You
- 26:34Speaker 1: know that that might take a little time even just
- 26:38Speaker 1: to get it out of your mouth. Okay, while we're
- 26:40Speaker 1: on the subject of junk food. When these last couple
- 26:43Speaker 1: of days, and this really even goes back to late
- 26:46Speaker 1: last week because our man CB sent this story to
- 26:48Speaker 1: me and of course hadn't been in.
- 26:49Speaker 3: To be able to do this. Did you do the Cheeto.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Story the U went up for a major sale?
- 26:57Speaker 3: Yeah? Yesterday? Yeah?
- 26:59Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, So did you get did you get the
- 27:02Speaker 1: story in and with the yeah? Yeah, the Pokemon it's
- 27:05Speaker 1: a cheeto. I guess what a hot cheetah? Right, a
- 27:10Speaker 1: flaming hot cheeto in the shape of the Pokemon charizard.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Were you were you.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Into the whole Pokemon thing when you were younger, because
- 27:18Speaker 1: you would kind of fall into the age group.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah, so it was really popular when I was a kid.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I collected the cards, I went back to my parents'
- 27:26Speaker 2: house threw them all the way.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Oh that's not good.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Okay, my two oldest had him for a while anyway.
- 27:33Speaker 1: So the Cheeto that was shaped like the Pokemon charizard
- 27:39Speaker 1: was sold at auction for eighty seven forty bucks. Just
- 27:45Speaker 1: don't drop it on the floor and have your dog
- 27:47Speaker 1: eat it or something like that. I guess it would
- 27:48Speaker 1: be just under plastic or whatever, but that it's.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Weird kind of looking anyway, And I'm not in the flaming.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Hot cheetah, so I'd probably pass on it, but not
- 27:56Speaker 1: that i'd be interested in eating it. But if it
- 27:58Speaker 1: could fetch that kind of money, it might be interesting.
- 28:02Speaker 1: We'll see, all right, I've got a couple of sports
- 28:07Speaker 1: related things for you. First of all, did you do
- 28:11Speaker 1: the story? And the only reason I put this in
- 28:14Speaker 1: inconceivable is because of the solution. Have you done the
- 28:17Speaker 1: story about Kevin Durant and Booing fans the fans of Boo?
- 28:24Speaker 3: Have you done that story? No, I didn't see that.
- 28:25Speaker 3: One didn't see that one.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's only come out in the last twenty hours,
- 28:28Speaker 1: so now that I look at it, Okay. So the
- 28:32Speaker 1: Suns beat the Clippers last night. Now it was only
- 28:37Speaker 1: their fourth win in their last fifteen games. As we know,
- 28:39Speaker 1: Phoenix has been struggling. The Footprint Center is where they play,
- 28:47Speaker 1: and the fans there used to be called talking stick
- 28:50Speaker 1: resortive as I remembered Arena, but it's the Footprint Center
- 28:54Speaker 1: there in Phoenix. Booed the team early on and they
- 28:59Speaker 1: were way down in the game. They came back and
- 29:02Speaker 1: Kat had a lot to do with it, and they
- 29:04Speaker 1: had a strong fourth quarter and they closed out the game.
- 29:08Speaker 1: So he was aske during the news conference afterwards. What
- 29:14Speaker 1: did he think about and how did he feel about
- 29:17Speaker 1: the fans booing the team at home? And this was
- 29:20Speaker 1: his answer. This sounds like KD threw and through quote.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I always wondered what booing is going to do for
- 29:28Speaker 1: your team. It actually makes no sense. If you really
- 29:31Speaker 1: want to make your voice be heard, just get up
- 29:33Speaker 1: and leave. We'll feel that more than you booing. We
- 29:37Speaker 1: need energy, you know what I'm saying. When we're down twenty,
- 29:40Speaker 1: we need you all to get a little louder and
- 29:42Speaker 1: there and cheer a little louder. Booing has been a
- 29:44Speaker 1: part of the sports culture for the last fifty to
- 29:46Speaker 1: sixty years.
- 29:47Speaker 3: I think it's about time we put that up.
- 29:49Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Just get up and leave
- 29:51Speaker 1: if you don't like feel like watching this team play
- 29:54Speaker 1: bad basketball, and we would understand, and that would make
- 29:57Speaker 1: us feel even worse seeing y'all getting up and leaving.
- 30:03Speaker 1: So there was a there was a moment when he
- 30:05Speaker 1: was gesturing to the crowd. He said he was trying
- 30:08Speaker 1: to ignite the fans and tell him quote, get your
- 30:12Speaker 1: you know up to provide the team with a spark.
- 30:15Speaker 1: And he said he has nothing but love for the
- 30:18Speaker 1: Sun's fan base. So that learned twenty nine and thirty three.
- 30:22Speaker 1: But how about that idea, you know, if you don't
- 30:25Speaker 1: like what you see, you.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Can teach a class. You can teach a class, you
- 30:28Speaker 2: see Craig about being a sports fan.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, if you don't like a movie, it's
- 30:33Speaker 1: really bad. You know, you can get up and walk
- 30:36Speaker 1: out of a movie or a concert, right and do that.
- 30:40Speaker 1: And so he said, why not do that if the
- 30:42Speaker 1: team's play about he goes, We'll understand and it'll make
- 30:44Speaker 1: us feel bad too. But if you just sit there
- 30:46Speaker 1: and boo, that isn't doing anybody any good. Maybe it
- 30:49Speaker 1: makes the fan feel better to do it. Maybe it's that,
- 30:53Speaker 1: but it's not making the team feel any better about
- 30:56Speaker 1: that anyway. All Right, So there's one deal. Here's one
- 30:58Speaker 1: that's kind of sports where late you're very young. So
- 31:03Speaker 1: you were very young when the movie came out originally.
- 31:07Speaker 1: In fact, you might not even have been born. What
- 31:10Speaker 1: year were you born, nineteen ninety seven. Yeah, so this
- 31:15Speaker 1: came out before you were born. But you're familiar with
- 31:17Speaker 1: the movie Happy Gilmore, of course, Yeah, yeah, Okay. The
- 31:22Speaker 1: release date has been set for Happy Gilmore two. It's
- 31:27Speaker 1: coming out July twenty fifth, exclusively on Netflix.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Of course, the sequel.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Not only will Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Ben Steeler,
- 31:44Speaker 1: Dennis Dugan, and Alan Covert be reprising reprising their roles,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but a handful of professional golfers are going to be
- 31:52Speaker 1: on it as well.
- 31:52Speaker 3: How about these golfers in this.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Movie, Keegan Bradley, Bryce and Deshambeau, John Daly, Tony Fenow,
- 32:00Speaker 1: Keith Foller, Brooks, kept Rory macklework Colin Morikawa, Jack Nicholas,
- 32:05Speaker 1: Corey Paven, Xander Schoffley, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan spe Justin Thomas,
- 32:11Speaker 1: the Great, Lee Trevino, and Will's Alatoris. And there's also
- 32:14Speaker 1: going to be other cameos from eminem Reggie Bush, Travis Kelcey,
- 32:19Speaker 1: dan Patrick and Becky Lynch.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Interested and that.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm still hung up on the fact they didn't
- 32:27Speaker 2: call it Happy Gilmore Eagle, you know, for two shots.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right exactly, so that would make sense. But anyway,
- 32:36Speaker 1: it's it's coming out July twenty fifth, Netflix only. Okay, finally,
- 32:42Speaker 1: you know we're we're US citizens and you know you've
- 32:46Speaker 1: heard of people having dual citizenship, like in a couple
- 32:49Speaker 1: of countries or whatever. There is a tiny island out
- 32:53Speaker 1: the South Pacific that's willing to sell citizenship to you.
- 33:00Speaker 1: You don't have to go through a long waiting process
- 33:01Speaker 1: and this and this. It's Nauru, which is an island nation.
- 33:07Speaker 1: It's only eight square miles in the Southwest Pacific Ocean,
- 33:12Speaker 1: but you can become a citizen of it for one
- 33:14Speaker 1: hundred and five thousand dollars. That's all one hundred five
- 33:19Speaker 1: thousand dollars the reason why they're doing it. It has
- 33:21Speaker 1: a golden passport initiative, so to speak. They're trying to
- 33:25Speaker 1: raise money to fun climate action. They're facing an existential
- 33:29Speaker 1: threat from rising sea levels, storm surges, and coastal erosion.
- 33:34Speaker 1: So they're thinking that if we don't do something, we're
- 33:38Speaker 1: going to wash away.
- 33:39Speaker 3: So they're trying to get it done.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And you can be a citizen of the Sinking Island
- 33:45Speaker 1: Nation for a mere one hundred five thousand dollars. All right,
- 33:49Speaker 1: So there's your inconceivable for today. When we pack to
- 33:53Speaker 1: wrap by power number one on thirteen under the zone.
- 33:57Speaker 3: And we're back again. There we are Forrior number two
- 34:01Speaker 3: here on the program.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Have a little technical standard right there at the top
- 34:04Speaker 1: of the hour, Craig Way with you. Andrew Zimmel jumped
- 34:10Speaker 1: right in there to try to make a kick save,
- 34:14Speaker 1: you know, and soccer or hockey there how to go.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Over those final five minutes there's zim did you you
- 34:20Speaker 3: pull it? Keep it all together, keep it, keep it
- 34:22Speaker 3: between the lines.
- 34:24Speaker 2: We fumbled through. We did a good promo for the
- 34:26Speaker 2: iHeart radio app.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Oh nice, okay, all well, folks can definitely hear us
- 34:32Speaker 1: via the iHeartRadio app absolutely, and they can also text
- 34:37Speaker 1: the program as well as a couple of different ways.
- 34:40Speaker 1: That one uses the iHeart Radio app, and that would
- 34:45Speaker 1: be through our talk back feature, So you can do that.
- 34:50Speaker 1: And the way that that works is if you've got
- 34:54Speaker 1: the iHeart Radio app, all you have to do is
- 34:57Speaker 1: do the search on AM thirteen under the zon it
- 35:00Speaker 1: pops up and then there are two buttons. One's a
- 35:04Speaker 1: little white button like in the shape of an arrow.
- 35:06Speaker 1: That's if you just want to listen to the program.
- 35:09Speaker 1: And if you're wanting to contribute, there's a little red
- 35:12Speaker 1: button with a white micro fund in the middle of
- 35:14Speaker 1: you hit that and that is our talk back feature
- 35:18Speaker 1: and that allows you to leave a message fro up
- 35:20Speaker 1: to thirty seconds, so you could do it that way.
- 35:22Speaker 3: You can do it that way. You can also text the.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Program, and what you do is you text the word
- 35:29Speaker 1: texas follow by your question or comment to eight one
- 35:34Speaker 1: five three zero, so eight one five three zero Standard
- 35:39Speaker 1: messaging and data rights may apply. So that's that's how
- 35:43Speaker 1: you can text the program there here on AM thirteen
- 35:47Speaker 1: under the design. All right, likely, center's a lot to
- 35:50Speaker 1: get to. We're going to hear coming up in the
- 35:51Speaker 1: next segment from Jim Schlasnigle, the long wornes head baseball coach.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Well from him coming off of the win on Tuesday
- 36:01Speaker 1: night against Texas A and M Corpus Christy that has
- 36:05Speaker 1: run Texas record to ten and one overall, ten consecutive
- 36:09Speaker 1: wins after they had that season opening tenanting loss in
- 36:14Speaker 1: Arlington and Louisville. They've won ten straight since then. So
- 36:17Speaker 1: we'll hear from coach Slash as Schloss and the Longhorns
- 36:23Speaker 1: get ready for the Broncos of Santa Clara who come
- 36:29Speaker 1: in from the West Coast Conference. It's weird there's two
- 36:32Speaker 1: teams from the West Coast Conference coming to within one
- 36:37Speaker 1: hundred miles of each other in Central Texas this weekend.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Have Santa Clara here in town and Loyola Marymount is
- 36:43Speaker 1: playing one hundred miles up to road in Waco against Baylor.
- 36:46Speaker 1: So anyway, both of that is going on there. Okay,
- 36:52Speaker 1: there was a coaching there's been a coaching move made.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Johnny Harris, who was an assistant for Vic Shaefer here
- 37:05Speaker 1: in her first year in Vic's first year of the program,
- 37:10Speaker 1: then got the Auburn job. But Auburn today announced that
- 37:16Speaker 1: it has parted ways with coach Harris. She went fifty
- 37:20Speaker 1: eight and sixty three and four seasons. Last year they
- 37:24Speaker 1: got to the NCAA Tournament, but they went twelve and
- 37:26Speaker 1: eighteen this year, three and three in SEC competition. They
- 37:31Speaker 1: got beat last night by Florida. That was seven straight losses.
- 37:35Speaker 1: They finished in a four way tie for last place
- 37:38Speaker 1: with Missouri, Arkansas and Texas A and M SO. Anyway,
- 37:43Speaker 1: she'd been associated coach for Vic Shaeffer Mississippi State for
- 37:48Speaker 1: eight years from twenty twelve all the way up to
- 37:52Speaker 1: twenty twenty, and then she followed coach Schaefer here to
- 37:59Speaker 1: Texas and was associate head coach's first year here twenty
- 38:02Speaker 1: twenty twenty one before taking over the Auburn program. So
- 38:06Speaker 1: she went ten and eighteen first year. They'd gone five
- 38:10Speaker 1: to nineteen the year before her arrival. Then they went
- 38:12Speaker 1: to sixteen and fifteen or second year, and then went
- 38:16Speaker 1: twenty and twelve twenty twenty two. Twenty twenty three was
- 38:22Speaker 1: her when they went sixteen and fifteen. That was the
- 38:23Speaker 1: first winning season in four years, and then they went
- 38:28Speaker 1: twenty and twelve last year, but fell off this year,
- 38:31Speaker 1: and of course they had Dianna Gaston, who had been
- 38:33Speaker 1: on the Texas team and who had recruited had been
- 38:37Speaker 1: recruited to Texas by Johnny Harris, so she went ahead
- 38:39Speaker 1: and transferre there. She was their leading scorer and she
- 38:41Speaker 1: had a really good year individually, but Auburn not so much.
- 38:43Speaker 1: And so now they made the change their parting ways
- 38:48Speaker 1: with Johnny Harris the head coach there.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Also.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I don't know if you heard about this, Andrew. You know,
- 38:58Speaker 1: with all of the difficulty the Dallas Mavericks have had
- 39:03Speaker 1: of late, you know, starting of course with the Luca trade,
- 39:08Speaker 1: and Luka Doncic is faring quite well in Los Angeles,
- 39:12Speaker 1: thank you very much, and so.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Are the Lakers. They're really on a roll there.
- 39:18Speaker 1: I was listening to you yesterday after i'd popped on
- 39:21Speaker 1: with you right after it i'd hit the ground back
- 39:23Speaker 1: in Austin late in the afternoon, and you were talking
- 39:28Speaker 1: about the Luca trade, as many have, and how things
- 39:33Speaker 1: have kind of gone south, and how Nico Harrison is
- 39:37Speaker 1: really taking the brunt end, the blunt end of this
- 39:42Speaker 1: and the brunt of the criticism about all of this.
- 39:46Speaker 1: And I have to tell you I'm in agreement with
- 39:49Speaker 1: you because you said. It was their perspective, at least
- 39:53Speaker 1: that's what's being reported pretty much, their perspective, that Luca
- 39:59Speaker 1: wasn't improper shape, that he was injured too easily, that
- 40:03Speaker 1: he was it was he wasn't taken in taking it
- 40:07Speaker 1: seriously enough.
- 40:08Speaker 3: And I don't think that was the case.
- 40:11Speaker 1: He Sure he may have gotten worn down a bit
- 40:14Speaker 1: by playing, you know, uh in the summer in Slovenia
- 40:17Speaker 1: and forced Slovenia for their national team, But I didn't
- 40:21Speaker 1: you know, and and and you've heard You've heard me
- 40:23Speaker 1: say this before, Andrew. It's not that his legs and
- 40:28Speaker 1: calves where he's had these calve strains are so out
- 40:31Speaker 1: of shape.
- 40:31Speaker 3: It's just that he has cankles.
- 40:33Speaker 9: You know.
- 40:33Speaker 1: His calves go straight into his ankles, so you call
- 40:36Speaker 1: those cankles.
- 40:38Speaker 3: So he's got cankles, you know. It's just one long,
- 40:41Speaker 3: big cankle, you know, on each side of his legs.
- 40:44Speaker 1: So it makes it more susceptible to injury anyway. So
- 40:48Speaker 1: you had that, had the trade Anthony Davis gets hurt
- 40:51Speaker 1: then even his other rash of injuries, most notably unfortunately
- 40:56Speaker 1: Kyrie Irving. You know what I have to say, Uh
- 40:59Speaker 1: not most recent. It's not the most recent because they
- 41:04Speaker 1: just picked up the former long worn Kai Jones signed
- 41:06Speaker 1: an attend day deal and he couldn't go last night
- 41:09Speaker 1: due to a quat strain, so he couldn't play well.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Now after all of that, they're also losing a member
- 41:16Speaker 1: of the coaching staff. Alex Jensen has agreed to a
- 41:21Speaker 1: deal to become the next head coach at the University
- 41:24Speaker 1: of Utah. Utah had fired Craig Smith right near the
- 41:31Speaker 1: end of his fourth season. It was right at the
- 41:33Speaker 1: end of last month, so it was just, you know,
- 41:35Speaker 1: a little over a week ago. They went sixty five
- 41:38Speaker 1: and sixty two without an NCAA tournament appearance. They won
- 41:41Speaker 1: twenty two games last year they played onto the bubble,
- 41:44Speaker 1: but they lost to eight of their last twelve regular
- 41:46Speaker 1: season games.
- 41:47Speaker 3: They fell out of consideration.
- 41:49Speaker 1: So they had hired him to replace Larry chris Koviak
- 41:55Speaker 1: and they haven't advanced to the NCAA tournament since twenty sixteen,
- 42:00Speaker 1: and he'd made only four appearances since Rick mcjeri's stepped
- 42:03Speaker 1: down for health reasons back in two way back in
- 42:05Speaker 1: two thousand and four, well he played for Majeri's. Jensen
- 42:08Speaker 1: is a Utah native. He was mister Basketball in the
- 42:12Speaker 1: state of nineteen ninety four. He played in Majeris. He
- 42:14Speaker 1: was the Mountain West Player of the Year in two
- 42:16Speaker 1: thousand and he helped lead the program to four NCAA
- 42:19Speaker 1: tournament appearance.
- 42:19Speaker 3: He was also a starter on.
- 42:21Speaker 1: That Utah team that played for the national championship in
- 42:24Speaker 1: ninety eight when they lost to Tubbe Smith, Kentucky team.
- 42:26Speaker 1: So he had been on Jason Kiff's kids' staff. He
- 42:29Speaker 1: was in his second year after a decade as an
- 42:32Speaker 1: assistant with the Utah Jazz, and he has experience coaching
- 42:36Speaker 1: in college. He spent four seasons as an assistant under
- 42:39Speaker 1: mcjerrison Saint Louis before he moved to the professional rank.
- 42:42Speaker 3: So the hits just keep on coming, ZIM.
- 42:46Speaker 1: For the Dallas Mavericks, they're losing players dropping left and right,
- 42:50Speaker 1: and now they lose an assistant coach.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Coaching in college basketball. Craig is like really really hard
- 42:56Speaker 2: right now with nil and transfer portal. So I would say, like, oh,
- 42:58Speaker 2: stay is a professional coach well as you can, except
- 43:01Speaker 2: if it's Dallas Mavericks, then I would say leave as
- 43:03Speaker 2: quickly as possible.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Run run away, run, run, far away, that kind of thing.
- 43:09Speaker 1: So anyway, it's it's been a tough go for the Mavericks.
- 43:13Speaker 1: And like I said, Kai Jones, the former Longhorn, was
- 43:15Speaker 1: signed to a ten day deal and.
- 43:18Speaker 3: He couldn't get and they had just signed him.
- 43:20Speaker 1: In fact, Mark Followell, who's the play by play voice
- 43:24Speaker 1: on Dallas Mavericks Television, had texted me while I was
- 43:27Speaker 1: in Starkville and wanted to know that I have any
- 43:31Speaker 1: other you know, factoids, information, uh, you know, pertinent stuff
- 43:36Speaker 1: that I could share about Kai Jones. And I told
- 43:40Speaker 1: him because they were preparing for Kai to be able
- 43:42Speaker 1: to play. And I texted him back and I said,
- 43:47Speaker 1: you know, here's I said. This is kind of weird
- 43:51Speaker 1: to be able to say this, but there isn't a
- 43:53Speaker 1: great deal. I can tell you about his time here.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Kai was it really nice. Young man came from the Bahamas,
- 44:02Speaker 1: had no family here in the States. But it was
- 44:05Speaker 1: very affable, friendly, warm, pleasant to be around. Was a
- 44:12Speaker 1: willing worker. He would get in the gym and really
- 44:16Speaker 1: work that sort of thing. Two seasons with the Longhorns,
- 44:20Speaker 1: Kai Jones averaged six points and four rebounds per game.
- 44:23Speaker 3: That's it.
- 44:24Speaker 1: So when you're drafted nineteenth overall in the NBA draft,
- 44:28Speaker 1: as he was, and you averaged six points and four
- 44:32Speaker 1: boards over two seasons as a freshman and sophomore. Clearly
- 44:36Speaker 1: you're being drafted on length, which he has plenty of,
- 44:40Speaker 1: and potential, which he's had, but.
- 44:43Speaker 3: It hasn't gone that well f him in the NBA.
- 44:44Speaker 1: He also lost a very close i think friend of
- 44:47Speaker 1: the family that was like a family member to him,
- 44:50Speaker 1: and that put him in a bad way, and he
- 44:52Speaker 1: had some difficult times in Charlotte. By his own admission,
- 44:55Speaker 1: he said those were some missteps he made, but he'd
- 44:57Speaker 1: kind of tried to turn his turn everything back around
- 45:00Speaker 1: his career and that's what he's trying to do right now.
- 45:01Speaker 1: But then he couldn't get on the floor because of
- 45:03Speaker 1: the quad.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Strained last night.
- 45:05Speaker 1: So it's just unfortunate, and the unfortunate things continue to
- 45:10Speaker 1: happen to the Dallas Mavericks, so hopefully they can get
- 45:14Speaker 1: themselves straightened out there. But it's a difficult go right
- 45:19Speaker 1: now for the Mavericks as they have been clinging to
- 45:25Speaker 1: the possibility of being able to get into the playoffs.
- 45:29Speaker 1: But it's getting leaner and leaner right now, all right,
- 45:33Speaker 1: coming up we'll talk to Long ONRM Baseball.
- 45:35Speaker 3: We'll hear from Jim Schlosnagel, the head coach of.
- 45:38Speaker 1: The Longhorns, as they prepare for the Broncos of Santa Clara.
- 45:43Speaker 1: This is the final non conference weekend series. And if
- 45:47Speaker 1: it seems like it's come on pretty quick and that
- 45:49Speaker 1: the advent of conference play is quicker than normal, you'd
- 45:52Speaker 1: be exactly right, because they'd play thirty Now with the
- 45:56Speaker 1: expanded SEC thirty conference games, they'll play ten series. So
- 46:03Speaker 1: that means the Longhorns aren't playing everyone in the.
- 46:07Speaker 3: SEC this year.
- 46:08Speaker 1: They're not playing the defending national champions from Tennessee. They're
- 46:11Speaker 1: not playing South Carolina, They're not playing Vanderbilt, They're not
- 46:15Speaker 1: playing Alabama, and I think everybody else are playing. They
- 46:21Speaker 1: have Auburn and home. They have Georgia at home, they
- 46:22Speaker 1: have Florida at home. They play at Kentucky, they play
- 46:25Speaker 1: at Missouri, they have Texas A and M at home,
- 46:28Speaker 1: and they open next week in Mississippi State, so they
- 46:32Speaker 1: also have to play at Arkansas and they close at Oklahoma.
- 46:37Speaker 1: So anyway, that's where that is. But SEC conference play
- 46:42Speaker 1: begins next weekend for Texas baseball. On the Road in Starkville,
- 46:49Speaker 1: Mississippi at Mississippi State, and we will hear from head
- 46:52Speaker 1: coach Jim Schlastangle coming up when we continue here on
- 46:55Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone. Glad to have you with us
- 47:08Speaker 1: on a Thursday afternoon. A reminder six o'clock tonight from
- 47:12Speaker 1: Long Worn Weekly with Rodney Terry from Pluckers the West
- 47:14Speaker 1: Campus location, our final show of this season, and Arthur Caluma,
- 47:20Speaker 1: a long Horn's power forward who had I believe this.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Sixth double double of the season the other night.
- 47:26Speaker 1: We'll join us tonight, So at six o'clock Pluckers the
- 47:31Speaker 1: West Campus location here in Austin's twenty two twenty two
- 47:35Speaker 1: Reo Grand and we'll begin promptly at.
- 47:39Speaker 3: Six o'clock and it's live right here on the Zone.
- 47:43Speaker 9: All right.
- 47:45Speaker 1: We shift to baseball when we get to tomorrow because
- 47:48Speaker 1: the Longhorns have one more non conference.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Series weekend series.
- 47:53Speaker 1: They of course they'll still play the midweek non conference
- 47:57Speaker 1: games they have those, but this is the final non
- 48:01Speaker 1: conference weekend series to start before the start of SEC
- 48:07Speaker 1: League play when they opened in Starkville in conference play
- 48:12Speaker 1: next weekend at Mississippi State. So Jim Schlostangle, the head coach.
- 48:18Speaker 1: After the game, he visited with our Keith Mortland and
- 48:21Speaker 1: then had his media availability afterwards. And remember what Tuesday
- 48:27Speaker 1: night's game was. It was a game where the Longhorns
- 48:30Speaker 1: jumped out to a four to nothing lead, promptly gave
- 48:34Speaker 1: up five runs in the top of the fourth after
- 48:36Speaker 1: two outs. There were errors, wild pitches, walks, all of
- 48:40Speaker 1: those things, and all of a sudden you looked up
- 48:43Speaker 1: and Texas A and and Corpus Christy had a five
- 48:46Speaker 1: to four lead, and the long Horns promptly put that
- 48:48Speaker 1: away with six runs in the bottom of four ten four,
- 48:51Speaker 1: and they ended up with a fifteen to five, eight
- 48:54Speaker 1: inning run rule victory. It was called after eighty ings
- 48:58Speaker 1: when the Long Horns pleted their fifteenth run of the night,
- 49:01Speaker 1: which gave them a ten run margin in that end
- 49:04Speaker 1: of the ball game. So the ups, the downs, the misplays,
- 49:08Speaker 1: the stuff that went good, all that was recapped as
- 49:12Speaker 1: well as what the Long Ones did right from head
- 49:14Speaker 1: coach Jim Slosneigle.
- 49:15Speaker 3: These were his opening comments about it.
- 49:19Speaker 8: A lot of different feelings about that ball game, mostly positive.
- 49:23Speaker 8: Certainly caught Flores was really good, pitched deeper into the game,
- 49:28Speaker 8: mixed his pitch as well, made some nice plays. Somehow
- 49:32Speaker 8: he was using a new glove which apparently worked on
- 49:36Speaker 8: the first couple of ones and then it ejected the
- 49:38Speaker 8: other one. A lot of really good at bats obviously,
- 49:43Speaker 8: you know, hit some homers, and I thought we ran
- 49:46Speaker 8: the base as well. When you're trying to steal bases
- 49:49Speaker 8: and do some things on bases, there's gonna be some
- 49:50Speaker 8: outs made on the bases. But it's more about the
- 49:53Speaker 8: percentage of your step stolen bases than it is every
- 49:56Speaker 8: now and then making it out. So it's pleased about that.
- 50:01Speaker 8: I don't know if I've ever been a part of
- 50:02Speaker 8: a team giving up sixteen free bases in one inning.
- 50:04Speaker 9: So that was ugly.
- 50:06Speaker 8: But the positive was that it's awesome to be in
- 50:09Speaker 8: the dugout that never panics and that's a trait that
- 50:12Speaker 8: we're gonna need throughout the course of the rest of
- 50:15Speaker 8: the season, and so really proud of the team that way.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Okay, so there was that, obviously, you start from that baseline,
- 50:24Speaker 1: and so then Schloss was asked, what is the good
- 50:30Speaker 1: that comes out of the fact that they had to
- 50:32Speaker 1: come back in the game because of the sixteen free
- 50:36Speaker 1: bases and all the mess that happened in that top
- 50:39Speaker 1: of the fourth inning.
- 50:39Speaker 3: So what's the good that comes from this?
- 50:42Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, you know, the seasons, it's an imperfect
- 50:45Speaker 8: game played by imperfect people.
- 50:47Speaker 9: So it's it doesn't matter who you're playing.
- 50:49Speaker 8: You look across college baseball, there's you know, if you
- 50:52Speaker 8: don't play well, you lose. And so the fact that
- 50:55Speaker 8: I've been on plenty of teams that panic in those
- 50:57Speaker 8: moments and the at bats get worse, and you know,
- 51:00Speaker 8: you start thinking about, oh my goodness, where you know
- 51:03Speaker 8: we're losing this team and losing to somebody that everybody
- 51:05Speaker 8: says we should be. Well, if you don't play well,
- 51:07Speaker 8: you are going to lose something. You know, it doesn't
- 51:08Speaker 8: matter who you play. So so yeah, I think there's
- 51:11Speaker 8: a confidence there. And certainly playing at home helps and
- 51:14Speaker 8: the ball flying a little bit, but the wind died
- 51:17Speaker 8: down the rest of the game, and those the rest
- 51:20Speaker 8: of those other homers were legit. So yeah, I mean,
- 51:24Speaker 8: you don't like self imposed adversity in the free bases
- 51:27Speaker 8: because that's that's going to get you beat over time.
- 51:29Speaker 8: But it's also this is our opportunity to figure out
- 51:32Speaker 8: who can do what, and the players will tell us
- 51:35Speaker 8: who they are. The guys that pitch the best, pitch
- 51:36Speaker 8: the most. The guys that play the best play the most.
- 51:38Speaker 8: And neither way to find that out is to get
- 51:40Speaker 8: guys out there.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, So speaking of guys who pitched pretty well,
- 51:45Speaker 1: Jason Floores this is the freshman, not Jaling Floors, the
- 51:48Speaker 1: junior short stot, but Jason Floores, the freshman right hander.
- 51:52Speaker 3: He's looked good so far.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Even in shorter outings, and he I think went four
- 51:58Speaker 1: four and three and two thirds before he was taken out.
- 52:01Speaker 1: But Schloss asked what made Jason Flores effective while he
- 52:05Speaker 1: was out there?
- 52:07Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean he was.
- 52:08Speaker 8: He was throwing, you know, two and three pitches for strikes,
- 52:12Speaker 8: and he didn't panic when he got behind counts except
- 52:16Speaker 8: on the one ball that kicked out of his love field.
- 52:17Speaker 9: His position. Well he hit, he hit a guy or two.
- 52:21Speaker 8: But you know, for a young picture with that kind
- 52:23Speaker 8: of arm, that's back to back good starts. Now, you know,
- 52:26Speaker 8: one three innings, one four or so four plus. I
- 52:31Speaker 8: wanted to you know, we were I think you could
- 52:33Speaker 8: have kept going. I just wanted to see McCreery. We
- 52:35Speaker 8: wanted to see McCreery. Earlier in the early in the game,
- 52:37Speaker 8: just to try to take a little heat off him.
- 52:40Speaker 8: He's finished games. He's going to be a good pitcher
- 52:42Speaker 8: for us. But I thought Flores was awesome.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Well, that's good. You mentioned Connor McCurry who was out there.
- 52:50Speaker 1: And then there's another guy out there who certainly did
- 52:57Speaker 1: the Longhorns some good when he was out there. Uh
- 53:01Speaker 1: and and and in so doing, Ruger Riojas got the
- 53:06Speaker 1: win for Texas. But additionally, as Schlosh pointed out, there
- 53:11Speaker 1: were other guys who helped out.
- 53:14Speaker 3: And one of the guys that.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Schloss pointed out was Bryce Navario, who got the final
- 53:22Speaker 1: two outs of the ball game.
- 53:23Speaker 3: He walked on, he struck.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Out one, and so since he closed out the game,
- 53:28Speaker 1: since he finished the game. Jim Schlastingle, the head coach,
- 53:32Speaker 1: then was asked, you know what kind of future does
- 53:35Speaker 1: Bryce Lavari have?
- 53:38Speaker 9: Oh, yeah, I think navar can. I mean I think Navarre.
- 53:40Speaker 8: As he gets bigger and stronger, he can be a
- 53:43Speaker 8: really good starting pitcher. And you know he's got he
- 53:46Speaker 8: really knows how to spin the ball. He's one of
- 53:47Speaker 8: the best guys in the country last year in high
- 53:49Speaker 8: school baseball in terms of just spinning the baseball, and
- 53:52Speaker 8: and that's that's a lost art today. And you know
- 53:56Speaker 8: he can throw his break and ball, two different breaking
- 53:58Speaker 8: balls behind the count to a really good change up
- 53:59Speaker 8: to and he's starting to ride the fastball sund and
- 54:02Speaker 8: so as he gets strongers, it would.
- 54:03Speaker 9: Be really good. All right.
- 54:05Speaker 1: So, speaking of spinning the ball, back to Jason Flores,
- 54:09Speaker 1: there's a guy who throws. And Keith Morland and I
- 54:13Speaker 1: were talking about this on the air when we were
- 54:15Speaker 1: out in Las Vegas last Friday night, and we were
- 54:17Speaker 1: talking about it as it related to Jared Spencer. The
- 54:21Speaker 1: Lorrens Friday night started a left hander, and this seems
- 54:25Speaker 1: to be a growing trend in college baseball where pitchers,
- 54:30Speaker 1: whether they're lefties or righties, now are starting to throw
- 54:37Speaker 1: for one of a better term. It's almost kind of
- 54:38Speaker 1: a hybrid. It's not quite a slider, not quite a cutter.
- 54:46Speaker 1: It might be a little faster than a slider, but
- 54:49Speaker 1: it might not have quite the break of a slider
- 54:53Speaker 1: or quite the break of a cutter. So Schloss was asked,
- 54:59Speaker 1: is ja sitting floor is breaking ball? There's another one
- 55:01Speaker 1: of these guys who throws that kind of hybrid pitch.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Is it what kind of breaking ball it is as
- 55:07Speaker 1: a slider or a cutter.
- 55:10Speaker 9: He does a.
- 55:11Speaker 8: Cutter and a little slider split, but it's the cutter
- 55:15Speaker 8: that he's able to throw in the strikes on easy
- 55:19Speaker 8: and then plays his fastball off of it.
- 55:22Speaker 1: See and veteran coaches, they know exactly, you know what
- 55:26Speaker 1: they what that other you know even you know just
- 55:33Speaker 1: you might say subtle break might be whether you know
- 55:39Speaker 1: it falls between the lines of being a cutter or
- 55:43Speaker 1: a slider. He mentioned split, and several of these guys
- 55:49Speaker 1: throw a pitch that kind of does a lot of
- 55:51Speaker 1: those things, depending on you know, how well the breaking
- 55:56Speaker 1: ball is working and what the weather conditions are like
- 55:59Speaker 1: on a given night. So oh, next, Schloss was asked
- 56:02Speaker 1: what does he want to see from Jason Flores going forward?
- 56:06Speaker 8: He needs to keep going, you know, it's always those
- 56:09Speaker 8: decisions are always relative to everybody else, right, And so
- 56:13Speaker 8: we give a series this weekend against Santa Clara. Haven't
- 56:18Speaker 8: made a final decision on Sunday, but we may give
- 56:19Speaker 8: somebody else an opportunity to start on Sunday, not because
- 56:23Speaker 8: Caid's been horrible, but just so that if we want
- 56:26Speaker 8: to start somebody further down the line, then they have
- 56:29Speaker 8: a starting experience, right and so uh so we'll get
- 56:32Speaker 8: through that, maybe see how the weekend goes. Uh you
- 56:38Speaker 8: know next week, I know UTSA has got a really
- 56:41Speaker 8: good team, so we'll just see heading the conference play.
- 56:45Speaker 9: But normally you wanna you want.
- 56:47Speaker 8: To be loaded for bear going in those SEC weekends
- 56:50Speaker 8: and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna sit Jason Flores
- 56:53Speaker 8: in that bullpen and watch us lose an SEC game.
- 56:56Speaker 8: If we if he can help us win one, we'll
- 56:57Speaker 8: worry about the next Tuesday that when that day comes.
- 57:00Speaker 9: So you know, you could see him jump into you know, any.
- 57:05Speaker 3: Role really, yeah, I would imagine.
- 57:08Speaker 1: So all right, so that brings us back to Sunday,
- 57:13Speaker 1: because we know what the Friday and the Saturday starters are.
- 57:16Speaker 3: We know who those guys are.
- 57:18Speaker 1: So Jared Spencer is going to start the game tomorrow
- 57:20Speaker 1: night against Santa Clara, and Luke Harrison will start the
- 57:23Speaker 1: Saturday ball game against Santa Clara. So Schloss was asked
- 57:29Speaker 1: what's his mindset on what he thinks he might want
- 57:31Speaker 1: to do with his starter for Sunday.
- 57:34Speaker 8: You know, potentially valanis you know I'd like to see
- 57:37Speaker 8: him start a game and then we can see just
- 57:40Speaker 8: to give him that experience and then go into the
- 57:44Speaker 8: following weekend and.
- 57:45Speaker 9: Just kind of see how it plays out.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so there's some thoughts from Jim Silas Nigle.
- 57:51Speaker 1: We'll get to a couple more next hour. Of course,
- 57:53Speaker 1: next hour we'll talk to Major League Baseball with Geene
- 57:55Speaker 1: Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office. We've got
- 57:58Speaker 1: some pro football notes NBA notes to get to when
- 58:01Speaker 1: we continue here on thirteen under the Zone, three thirty
- 58:05Speaker 1: five here on this afternoon, now three thirty six, on
- 58:09Speaker 1: this Thursday, Andrew Zimmo, I haven't asked you lately because
- 58:12Speaker 1: I've been out of town so much. Give me a
- 58:14Speaker 1: little pulse on what you're seeing, thinking, feeling, hearing and
- 58:19Speaker 1: understanding about your hometown team, the San Antonio Spurs these.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Days, brother, when Wimby went down, a lot of era
- 58:29Speaker 2: left my sales. And it's been fun to watch dearon Fox.
- 58:33Speaker 2: But this is not what I was hoping for from
- 58:36Speaker 2: this season.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Well, yeah, and then of course not having Pop, you know,
- 58:41Speaker 1: it's a big part of that. Of course, it was
- 58:43Speaker 1: recently announced he's not going to be back for the
- 58:45Speaker 1: rest of this season, but there's hope about what he
- 58:48Speaker 1: might be able to do coming back forward. Do you
- 58:51Speaker 1: get the sense that they figured, you know, once Wimby
- 58:54Speaker 1: gets you know, the thing with the blood clot thing
- 58:57Speaker 1: and getting that under getting that eradicated as Spurs management
- 59:03Speaker 1: management seems to think it will that the medication will
- 59:07Speaker 1: handle that, that that'll get rid of that, and getting
- 59:10Speaker 1: a chance to work with the Aaron Fox, that this
- 59:12Speaker 1: thing might continue to build Ford, especially with the other
- 59:15Speaker 1: guys that they have right now that are contributing.
- 59:19Speaker 2: One hundred percent, Like, once we can get the entire
- 59:21Speaker 2: band back together, there, Wimby's healthy, Fox is healthy. Pop
- 59:25Speaker 2: is on the sideline. Sky's the limits. But right now
- 59:27Speaker 2: I'm just trugging through the next twenty games and looking
- 59:30Speaker 2: for my ping pong balls.
- 59:32Speaker 1: That's what I'm doing. Look at you, hoping lottery, I understand,
- 59:37Speaker 1: all right. So I'm asking right now, top of your head,
- 59:41Speaker 1: best team in the NBA right now.
- 59:42Speaker 3: Is Oklahoma City Thunder?
- 59:46Speaker 1: Okay, Hi, where do you stand with the Cleveland Cavaliers
- 59:52Speaker 1: right now?
- 59:53Speaker 2: I am I'm excited for the Calvs. I just think
- 59:56Speaker 2: they need to get some playoff lumps Boston Celtics defending champions.
- 59:59Speaker 3: I'm not betting again, stem you know what you sound like.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I was a Colin Cowherd was just saying that right
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: before he came on the air, and he said, because
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: they are so young right now, that he's not he's
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: not going to be putting all his eggs in that
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: basket for Cleveland. But he really does like Cleveland. Jared
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Allen's playing great right now, the former long Yes, really
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: really playing well for them right now. So that's that's
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: It's good to see him playing well and we'll see,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: you know how it is going down the stretch of
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: the regular season. Meanwhile, they've popped back up again the
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Kevin Durant trade proposals as well. Of course, he's in
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: the last year of a four year, one hundred ninety
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: eight million dollar extension that he signed in Brooklyn. He
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: doesn't have a no trade clause like Bradley Beal does there,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: but he pretty much holds the leverage on where he
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: can go. For example, he said, and this was a
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: quote that he said last month, when he leaves on
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Draymond Green Show, which I find quite it's Draymond Green
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: with Baron Davis. Yeah, I find it ironic given the
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: acrimonious time that was spent in the Bay Area when
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: the two were part of Golden State's teams that won
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: titled out there. But he said, I want my career
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: now on my terms. That's the only thing I'm worried about,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: because I see a lot of dudes that don't get
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: that opportunity. So I want to keep putting in that
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: work to make that choice on my own. It's been
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: reported by multiple outlets that the Sons are willing to
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: work with Katie on a deal if there's a decision
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: to move him after the season.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: But there's a couple of factors that go into this.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: The first is, is he willing to sign a two year,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty two million dollar extension with the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: team that trades for him, And because he can be
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: a free agent twenty twenty six, it's unlikely that a
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: team would trade draft capital and players for one year rental.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: You know, they want a little more than just one year.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: That's one thing.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: And then the other thing is this, would the team
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: that trades for him still be in contention, would would
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: he still be available, would he still be in position
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: to really help them make a major push because he's
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: thirty six and his next team is likely to be
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: his last opportunity to add that third ring. So the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: teams that have been mentioned Mavericks have been one, Rockets
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: have been one, Miami, the Knicks. Those are the teams
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: apparently that would seem best suited for him a deal.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Do any of those teams Mavericks, Rockets, Heat or Knicks
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: seem likely to you is a group that might be
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: willing to deal with Phoenix to get KD.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I think all those teams would make a deal, Craig,
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: I just don't think any of those teams are competing
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: for a title with KD. That's where my issue would
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: be the Knicks. That feels like a very over the
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: top move after especially just after trading for Karl Anthony Towns.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: But I think the Rockets, probably of those four teams,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: makes the most sense.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think probably so it might.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: I was thinking Rockets also if it were to happen,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: and the hype of the hypotheses that come forward on
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: a deal like that would include, say, for example, if
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: the Rockets were willing to do a deal, maybe KD
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: goes to Houston in exchange for this is one thing
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: I read Dylan Brooks, Reed Shepherd, Cam Whitmore and Jack
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Landale plus two first round draft picks twenty twenty five
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: and twenty twenty seven via Phoenix. The twenty twenty five
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: first would be conveyed after the draft lottery, which comes
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: up in May. So it's a lot, but maybe it
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: isn't a lot when you consider what Kevin can bring
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: to a team, So that that might be the most
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: logical scenario, you know, Miami, Maybe.
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: That there could be a deal involved with that.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: You know, the Knicks and an Obi and Mitch Robinson
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: might be involved in that deal.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: And where the Mavericks are concerned.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Gosh, you know, to take a pick of lots of
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: guys to Klay Thompson, PJ Washingt, Igi Marshall, Derek Lively
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: first round pick.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Of course, the Mavericks have already kind of gutted themselves
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: with what Nico did with the with obviously with the
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Luca trade.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: But we'll see how it is going forward on them
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: all right.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: We will be back to wrap up hour number two
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: right here on Am thirteen hundred the Zone. A couple
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: of things before we get toward the top of the hour,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: and then we have one more hour of the program.
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: To go.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: On the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament. The first two games,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: the day time games, are in the books. In the
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: second round, Vanderbilt, the eight seed, beat Tennessee the nine seed,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: eighty four to seventy six. So now Vanderbilt draws the
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: number one seed. South Carolina, of course, had the co
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: championship with Texas, and it took the commissioner, Greg Sanky
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: flipping a coin to decide who would get the one seed.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: South Carolina got the one seed. By the way, I
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: still think way way too much was made out of that.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Folks that were besides themselves are highly critical or whatever
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: about breaking that time, and there's to be another way.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: It really doesn't matter a great deal because both are
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: headed for the NCAA tournament. Both have a real good
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: chance to be number one seeds in the n A tournament.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: That matters most. So I don't think it matters that much.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: You know, you'd say, well, Texas is the two might
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: have a tougher se final match having to go potentially
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: against LSU, but LSU is going to be without Flaje Johnson,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: even if they're outstanding guard who got injured last Sunday
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: in their regular season finale against Ole Miss, So who knows,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: maybe it'll be an easier up, maybe not. South Carolina
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: will play Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals on the top side
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: of the bracket. Also on the top side of the bracket,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: it'll be the four seed against the five seeds, so
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: the seed's holding the form. Kentucky, which got a double
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: by the four seed, will now play the five seed Oklahoma.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Oklahoma won this afternoon over Georgia seventy to fifty two.
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: The evening session.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: Actually begins a little over an hour from now, and
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: this is the game that long Corn fans will want
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: to pay attention to. The seven seed Old Miss the
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: ten seed Mississippi State, so a little egg bowl basketball
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: rivalry stuff. The winner of that game will face Texas
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: tomorrow afternoon at five o'clock. Will be that one at
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: five o'clock tomorrow afternoon. You can hear that on one
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: of three point one FM, and so that that will
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: be the first of the evening session and the first
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: of the evening session tonight. The six seed Alabama the
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: eleven seed Florida. The winner of that will play the
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: three seed LSU. That game would be at about seven
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: point thirty tomorrow night, and that would complete the quarterfinal setup.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: So that's where it stands right now. Texas awaits the
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: winner of this matchup that will get underway a little
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: over an hour from now, Ole Miss against Mississippi State,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: So those two would get together and it could be
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: pretty that could wind up being being quite entertaining about that,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: just to see how those you know, how these games
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: match up before Texas gets an opportunity. So that's something
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: else to keep track of. Okay, there was one other thing.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I wanted to get to this. Of course,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: this is also your station for Round Rock Express Baseball.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: And so the Express will of course be opening their
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: new season very very soon. And as they get ready
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: to start their new season, they've announced their top twenty
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: five Express team. In other words, this is their twenty
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: fifth season team, so it's you know, they're getting ready
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: to celebrate the twenty fifth season of baseball at Dell
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Diamond and that they'll and this is.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: Following an offseason fan vote.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: So the Express have announced their top twenty five Express
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: team and they're going to give out a trading card
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: set for the game on May thirty first, when they
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: host Reno the Reno Aces, which is the Diamondbacks Triple
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: A affiliate, the first two thousand Express fans through the
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: gates on that Saturday, May thirty first, we'll get a
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: card set for that. Okay, first of all, I've never
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: seen an all time whatever team, or an all decade team,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: or an all whatever team that has two managers.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: But they do, and both are deserving.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Jackie Moore the original manager from two thousand to two
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: thousand and seven, and he went into the Hall of
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Fame in twenty fourteen. He was the original manager, led
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: the first ever Express team to the Texas League Championship
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: in two thousand.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: He earned Manager of the Year awards.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: He had division titles in two thousand and one, in
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: two thousand and four, had a playoff berth you know,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: two three seventy six and three twenty four Lifetime and
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: two twenty and two ten in the Pacific Coast League.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: And so he's one of the managers. The other is
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Bobby Jones, who's going to go into the Hall of Fame.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: And of course he had played with the Rangers. I mean,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: there was all the way back. I think the Washing Senators.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: He was in there before then when they moved in,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: and then he was the skipper of the Express for
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: three seasons.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: They went two twenty nine and two or three.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: All right, the catchers, two of them I took. Kintaro
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: of course, played twelve seasons in the Bigs. Bret Nicholas
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: as well, seeing time of the Rangers. At first base,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Mark Sacamano, who's of course former Baylor Bear, and Chris
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: Davis drafted by the Rangers, and Blaine Krim So there's
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: three first basemen.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: At second base Keith Ginner.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: A member of that original Round Rock Express team that
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: won the championship. Brooks Conrad there as well at shortstop,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: just won and he's a good one. Jerkson Profar, who
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: of course is playing right now for the Padres. Third base,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Morgan Ensburg on that original championship team, Royce Huffman who's
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: an Express Hall of Famer, Mike Coolball, also Matt Cotta
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: and Joey Gallo in the outfield, Jason Lane, Luke Scott,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Joey Butler, and Jared Hoying. Also Kyle Tucker, Jordan Alvarez. Yeah,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: these are all very familiar names. And Bubba Thompson starting
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: pitcher about roy oswalt An Express Hall of Famer, Kirk
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Sarlows of course, the head coach of TCU now Bud
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Norris out of the bullpen, Travis Driscoll and Jimmy Ras.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: So there it is your top twenty five Express team.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: So that's pretty impressive to see, and they'll have that
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: going into their twenty fifth season. I also wanted to
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: have the opportunity to thank Leif Johnson Ford for being
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: a partner of this show. I've been buying trucks from

- 1:11:43Speaker 1: their partnership. Final hour of the program coming up here.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I'm thirteen hundred Zone Craig Wade with you on alongside
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: the producer andrews Emma.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: It's been a busy Guylade. We kept him busy as we've.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Had the overlap between baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, all
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: that's been going on, and Zimmo has been equal to
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: the task, and we're going to make sure he's equal
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: to the task again yet Tomorrow, as we have the
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: program for you, and Andrew will be at the Helm,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: I will check in for the ballpark. I'll be over
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: at UFCU dish Faul Fields to do that and correct
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong about this him. You're also going
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: to get a little drop in live visitation from one
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Cameron Parker there at the Bond Secure's Arena Wellness Center
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: in Greenville, South Carolina, prior to the Texas Women's SEC
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Tournament quarterfinal against either role Mississippi State tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: Correct, that is correct.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: Plus he gets me to produce his game for him too,
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: So me and Cameron are going to be two pizza pod.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: That's right. You'll beat the studio. That's Marathon Man there
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: you go. Okay, So that's good. That's good.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I got some other things we're gonna hear from. We're
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: gonna visit with Gene Watson A Framlin the Chicago White
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Sox coming up here in just a few.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: Minutes, so we'll visit with him. Talks in Big League Baseball.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: We will hear some more from Jim Schlosnagel as well,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: the Longhorns head coach. And of course Texas has their
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: matchup coming up with Santa Clara tomorrow evening at UFCU
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: Dish Fault Field at six thirty. Also a couple other
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: programming reminders for you. Our final Longhorn weekly program of
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the season with head basketball coach Rodney Terry, comes away
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: from Pluckers the West Campus location and that's a twenty
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: two to twenty two rear grand that's coming up at
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: six o'clock this evening. Arthur Kaluma, Longhorn's senior Ford, one
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: of the seniors who will be honored on Senior Night
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: on Saturday Night, will be our special guest. So Kaluma
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: will be with us tonight. So we have that coming
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: away tonight at six o'clock. And I mentioned Long Worn
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Baseball tomorrow at six thirty here on the Zone Texas
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Women on one oh three point one FM. It's a
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: four to forty five pre game start time at a
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: five o'clock tip. Saturday Long Worn Baseball one forty five
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: air time, two o'clock first pitch against Santa Clara and
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: then Saturday Night both here on the Zone and on
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: ninety eight point one fmkvet long worn men's basketball, the
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: regular season finale against Oklahoma and a huge, absolutely very
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: very important game tomorrow or Saturday for Texas. They really
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: are in need of a win. I would say this
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: in terms of being considered for an at large bid,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: and of course, you know, if you win the conference tournament,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: you win the automatic bid that punches your ticket.
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: You're already in.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: But if we're being real, the odds of a team
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: winning five games and five nights are extremely low, especially
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: if you're a double digit seed going into it.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: It's not good odds for you. It has happened.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: It happened last year with North Carolina State the ACC,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: it happened to the ACC well I think a couple
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: of years before that with Virginia Tech. It's happened in
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: the Big East. Both Yukon and I think Syracuse have
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: pulled it off. But that's examples that you can count
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: on one hand. So the odds are greatly against winning
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: five games and five nights.
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: Hard enough to do it with four.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: But now with the super conferences, you know, the power
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: fives being as large as they are, that expand expands
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: the tournament to four days and five days instead of
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: just being used to be like you three days. But
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: you know you can win the automatic bid by doing that.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Failing that and trying to get in as an at large,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: you have to couch yourself the best way possible to
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: do it and toward that in I think the Long
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Orangs pretty much are in a must win situation in
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: terms of from an at large perspective for a couple
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: of reasons. One, they're seventeen and thirteen and they need
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: another Quad one victory. Two, they are playing an Oklahoma
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: team that's in almost the identical situation that they are in.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Oklahoma is only one I think it's what five conference
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: games this season, the Long Orange have won six and
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: Oklahom has one more overall win. Remember the Sooner started
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: thirteen and oh but they're eighteen and twelve now, so
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: they're five and twelve in se play, so they're in
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: a desperate situation. So I think the Long Runs have
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: to win that game as well, so that would be
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: two in a row. They got a nice Quad one
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: road win at Mississippi State on Tuesday night, beating a
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: ranked team, getting and for Quad for people who are
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: not quite getting what that means. Quad one. There are
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: four quadrants in the quad of the computer rankings, and
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: what are the net rankings that are.
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: Monitored by the NCAA.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: And if you are in Quad one, then in the
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: top I guess it's seventy five. That's a good win.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: That's considered a good win. Quad two less so, Quad
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: three less so. And the one thing you don't want
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: to lose is lose a Quad four game because that
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: really hurts you. So it's important to try to garner
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: as many Quad one wins as you can, and in
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: addition to just losing as few as possible, overall loses
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: few of the lower quad games as possible. So long
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Wards could use another Quad one win, that would and
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: it would hurt Oklahoma, it would probably knock them off
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: the bubble. Then they go to Nashville and they would
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: take on probably it looks like it'll be the Georgia Bulldogs,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: and it looks like it'll be next Wednesday afternoon at
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: two thirty is when it would be, So it'd be
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: kind of during this space when we normally bring in
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: the program, we bring a basketball game instead, So it'd
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: probably be next Tuesday Wednesday, I said Tuesday, beg pardon
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: on that next Wednesday from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Texas
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: is gonna, in all probability be in the twelve slash
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: thirteen game. There's a mathematical chance it could even slide
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: as low as fourteen, but it's probably not gonna happen.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: Probably gonna be in the twelve thirteen game that would
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: be at two thirty in the afternoon, probably against Georgia.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: There's a couple other premier day chase that can work
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: into it. It's probably going to be Texas and Georgia.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: And of course the long Wrns lost to Georgia at
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: home last Saturday, so they would need to win there.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: It would balance the books they were Georgia. Also, Georgia
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: is another one of those teams that's trying to fight
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: its way onto the bubble and into the field, so
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: you could, you know, personally eliminate another one with a win.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: That's why these next two games are absolutely critical to
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: the Longhorn's hopes of landing an NCAA tournament bid as
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: an at large.
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: Like I said, catch lighting in a bottle.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Win five games in five days, you get your ticket
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: stamped to get the automatic bid. Failing that, bolstering your
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: resume as as one of the best sixty eight in
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: the country, they need a couple more wins to feel
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: better about that. Even then, not guarantee, but at least
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: they would probably be right by the plus side of
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: the bubble, depending on what happens in the other conference
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: tournaments across the country.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: And again, as I mentioned in the first hour of
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: the program.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: If you're one of these bubble teams like Texas, you
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: want as much chalk as possible. In other words, you
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: want Duke to win the ACC tournament. You want Saint
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: John's to win the Big East Tournament. You want Houston
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: to win the Big twelve tournament.
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: You want.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Michigan State I guess to win the Big Ten tournament.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: In other words, you want those teams that are definitely
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: going to be in the field anyway winning the tournament.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: And you want as few of those bubble teams that,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: like Texas, are trying to get some wins in the
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: conference tournament, if not win the whole thing, to boost
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: the resume.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: You want chalk. You want those teams that are supposed
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: to do well to do well. In the tournament.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: All right, up next we'll talk to Major League Baseball,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: will visit with Geene Watson from the Chicago White Sox
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: front office when we continue on thirteen under the zone.
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Here on this Thursday afternoon, as I mentioned Longhorn Baseball,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: we be back in action tomorrow as the Longhorns trying
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: to make it eleven in.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Row after dropping that.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Season opener in extra innings to Louisville, which is gosh,
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: it'll be two weeks ago tomorrow. They haven't lost since
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: they won ten in row, so they're ten and one
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: under Jim schlas Nagle, and they'll be back at work
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: tomorrow night, Santa Clara coming in for the first of
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: a three game weekend series. But we want to talk
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: baseball from the Major league perspective.
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: We do that.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: During the course of the season on a weekly basis
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: with a good friend from the Chicago White Sox front office,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Geene Watson, who joins us now from California. GINO at California, Arizona, Arizona,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: I should say, not California, but warm weather. Nevertheless, right
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: out in the Cactus State.
- 1:22:00Speaker 10: It's actually freezing here today. It's been raining half the day,
- 1:22:04Speaker 10: and we're in bad shape for tomorrow. I don't think
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: games are gonna be played out here tomorrow, but we'll.
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: See your kidding.
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: Whether I can ever remember, it has been just crazy
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: weather from day to day. I wear a hoodie it's hot.
- 1:22:17Speaker 10: I don't wear a hoodie it's freezing. So that's the
- 1:22:19Speaker 10: way it goes out here.
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with a badge. It's so all right.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: I want to There's a variety of topics I want
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: to get to here with you, but one of them
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: is a piece that I was fascinated by today, written
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: by our good friend Jet Passing, who I got a
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: chance to meet and get to know at the Sportscaster
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: of the Year banquet last year. He was the Sports
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Writer of the Year, the National sports Writer. You're a
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: great guy, I know you know him. And he wrote
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: a piece about what and I don't know how much
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: thought folks had put in this from a collective perspective,
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: but he wrote a piece on what it's going to
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: mean for Major League Baseball with the A's playing in
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: Sacramento and the Rays playing in the Yankees UH Minor
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: League and spring training ballpark in Tampa, and what it's
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: going to mean for that in terms of the ramifications
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: of you know, what the the building up of the ballpark,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: and you know, I guess with Tampa Bay playing at
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: Steinbrenner Field and they're having to.
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: Do a lot of different things, what is it?
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: What are the things that you're hearing about, how how
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: easy or uneasy folks are feeling about how this is
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: going to play out with two major league teams playing
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: their full schedules home schedules at two minor league facilities
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: this year.
- 1:23:44Speaker 10: Well, I'm very familiar with both ballparks. I've been to
- 1:23:47Speaker 10: both ballparks probably one hundred games each. I think the
- 1:23:51Speaker 10: one thing you're going to see more than anything is
- 1:23:54Speaker 10: offensive increase with both in both ballparks, I think you're
- 1:23:59Speaker 10: going to see very high offensive outputs. I don't think
- 1:24:04Speaker 10: pitchers are gonna be very happy about pitching in these parks.
- 1:24:08Speaker 10: But I also think they're both too kind of very
- 1:24:11Speaker 10: intimate ballparks. And you know, I mean, we have these
- 1:24:14Speaker 10: ballparks that are thirty five forty five thousand seed stadiums,
- 1:24:18Speaker 10: and most nights, you know, a lot of the seats
- 1:24:20Speaker 10: are empty. You know, unless your team's in first place,
- 1:24:23Speaker 10: are competing for a World Series. And so in this instance,
- 1:24:27Speaker 10: most nights these ballparks are gonna be very full. It's
- 1:24:30Speaker 10: gonna be very intimate, and I know that teams are
- 1:24:32Speaker 10: gonna be working hard to make a great game day
- 1:24:35Speaker 10: experience for them. But certainly the offensive outputs are gonna
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: be extremely high. And uh, it's gonna be, you know,
- 1:24:43Speaker 10: something to pay attention to.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: How do you think that that the parks are gonna
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: play for for for both the A's whatever we're calling them.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: I guess they're just saying just call them the A's, uh,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: and and and for the race?
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: How will these two ballparks.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Play especially I'm really kind of really interested in Tampa
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Bay because they've been playing home games obviously indoors at
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: the drop before the hurricane damage, and so now they're
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: playing outside as many do obviously during the spring.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: But you're but I've been.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Told it could be multiple double headers this year because
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: of those late afternoon thunderstorms that moved through Tampa the
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Tampa Bay area. How do you think that ballpark's gounda
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: play for the Rays?
- 1:25:27Speaker 10: That's gonna be the more unique management situation from the
- 1:25:30Speaker 10: race standpoint in that you know, The last thing you
- 1:25:33Speaker 10: want to do, especially with your top of rotation guys,
- 1:25:37Speaker 10: is get them hot, get them into the game, and
- 1:25:39Speaker 10: then you have an hour and fifteen minute rain delay
- 1:25:41Speaker 10: and they're shut down.
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: For the night.
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: And I covered the Floridas Day League.
- 1:25:45Speaker 10: For fourteen years, and that was certainly a daily occurrence,
- 1:25:48Speaker 10: especially in the months of June and July. I think
- 1:25:52Speaker 10: if you look at that April schedule, they're home a
- 1:25:54Speaker 10: bunch to try to combat some of that. But certainly
- 1:25:57Speaker 10: there's gonna be some management standpoint from the pitch. There's
- 1:26:00Speaker 10: gonna be some management standpoint from pregame work.
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: Uh. But they're both very.
- 1:26:05Speaker 10: Quaint, very inimate ballparks, and other than what I think
- 1:26:09Speaker 10: the offenses are gonna do, I think we're gonna see
- 1:26:11Speaker 10: a lot of home runs. I think that the fans
- 1:26:14Speaker 10: are gonna enjoy it.
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: I don't know where.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: I don't know where corregt Len Jean Andrews, iim of
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: the producer stepping in here. So you're talking about the
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: the A's do, so we don't know what we're gonna
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: call him this year.
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Hey, Gene So andrewsim.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: Of the producers stepping in because I think we have
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: another connection issue with with Craig, but I caught my attention.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: So we don't know what we're gonna call Oakland this year,
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: if they're gonna be the A's or something else.
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: They're they're calling them the Sacramento Athletics.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: Interesting. Okay, So what do you think, Uh, how do
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: you think that's gonna go over?
- 1:26:58Speaker 10: Well, certainly in northern Californias, there's gonna be a lot
- 1:27:01Speaker 10: of pride around the Sacramento team.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: What's gonna be interesting about the ballpark.
- 1:27:04Speaker 10: Is there's gonna be a game there every night, and
- 1:27:07Speaker 10: it's a grass field, and so you're gonna have when
- 1:27:11Speaker 10: when the A's are not home, the Triple A team
- 1:27:13Speaker 10: is going to be playing there, and so the Triple
- 1:27:16Speaker 10: A Giants will be playing there, and so you're gonna
- 1:27:19Speaker 10: have an instance where you've got grass fields and there's
- 1:27:21Speaker 10: a game every night, and they're probably gonna be replacing
- 1:27:24Speaker 10: it at some point in JUNI or July.
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: So that what does that mean for like the uptick
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: because I imagine that's going to take a lot of
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: a lot of work to make sure that stadium looks
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: as good as it needs to for a major League stadium.
- 1:27:37Speaker 10: Yeah, but these guys are really really good at their
- 1:27:39Speaker 10: jobs and they'll uh don't have it ready to go.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: So you're talking more about like what the weather looks
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: like down there.
- 1:27:46Speaker 9: Man.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: I know it's lame to talk weather, but how does
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: this affect guys when you're trying to get in that
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: warm up, you're trying to get those pitches, you're trying
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: to get your cadences down, and you know you might
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: not be able to play. What does that mean?
- 1:27:59Speaker 10: Yeah, I think from a from a health standpoint, you've
- 1:28:01Speaker 10: got to be very careful in that you're not you know,
- 1:28:05Speaker 10: getting your your especially top to mid rotation type starters up.
- 1:28:09Speaker 10: Certainly over two or three starts where they're getting up
- 1:28:11Speaker 10: and getting hot and then they're forced they're sitting there
- 1:28:14Speaker 10: with a one hour one hour halfway to lay and
- 1:28:17Speaker 10: they're scratch for the night. And you look over five
- 1:28:19Speaker 10: or six starts at home and you you've been shut
- 1:28:22Speaker 10: down for three of them because of weather. So there's
- 1:28:25Speaker 10: certainly going to be some management to it over time,
- 1:28:27Speaker 10: especially early.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: I think Craig is getting back on it now, but yeah,
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: I guess mine, I'm here. All right, There we go
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: there's Craig Way all.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: Right, H.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Geno was going to ask you with as we head
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: down the home stretch here of spring training, Uh, to
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: get your thoughts. And teams always ask you because there's
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: a great deal of curiosity always about the Yankees, and
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: now with Luis Heel being sidelined for at least three
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: three months because of that lap strain and uh and
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Gean Carlo Stanton, Uh, they're kind of you know, your
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: your old pal, Brian Cashman's having to think about whether
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: he has surgery on his elbows.
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: DJ Lem Mayhew has a left calf strain. What about
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: your thoughts on the Yankees right now?
- 1:29:19Speaker 10: Yeah, it's tough because they've got so much expectations going
- 1:29:22Speaker 10: into the year and just in you know, part of
- 1:29:25Speaker 10: my job is reaching out to the twenty nine other
- 1:29:27Speaker 10: clubs and and what the needs are. And a lot
- 1:29:29Speaker 10: of clubs are looking for starting pitching and a lot
- 1:29:31Speaker 10: of clubs are looking for right handed bats right now.
- 1:29:34Speaker 10: So the acquisition costs to improve your club right now
- 1:29:37Speaker 10: externally is going to be extremely high. And so it's
- 1:29:40Speaker 10: not something that a lot of clubs are going to
- 1:29:43Speaker 10: be willing to jump out and do they're gonna have to,
- 1:29:45Speaker 10: you know, go with the internals and try to you know,
- 1:29:47Speaker 10: evaluate their teams, you know, the first thirty forty games
- 1:29:50Speaker 10: of the season, and so it's certainly gonna be something
- 1:29:53Speaker 10: that they have to manage.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: But you know, and and you.
- 1:29:56Speaker 10: Know it's it's marks, you know, six or whatever it is.
- 1:29:58Speaker 10: And you know, we've got to get to the end
- 1:30:00Speaker 10: of this month and the injuries have really hampered a
- 1:30:03Speaker 10: lot of teams right.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Now, position switches among brand names. Of course, we've been
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: hearing about Al Tuvey being willing to go to left field.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: Nastro he's looking at it.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: And now Bryce Harper said yesterday in The Athletic that
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: he said he visited with Phillies management about going back
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: to the outfield if the Phillies can significantly upgrade at
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: first base.
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: Obviously, you know.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: There's other guys, there's he said, when Pete Alonzo was
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: still on the block, I kind of sat there and
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: was like, hey, why not.
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: And when we talked about it, I just.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: Reiterated to the Phillies and Scott Boris is age and
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: I'd be willing to move out there if it's going
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: to help us. I love playing first base. It's been great,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: but if it's going to help us win, I'd go
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: back out there. Of course, Alonzo resigned with the Mets.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: He could be available after this season if he opts
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: out of the two year deal. You got Vladimir Guerrera
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Junior scheduled to become a free agent. He didn't get
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: to a deal as well. What do you make about
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: this with veterans now, I mean this goes on back.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: I mean, I know you'll even remember, like I did,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: reading about you know, Mickey Mantle switching the first base
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: late in his career, even prior to that, Yogi Bearra
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: moving from behind the plate to the outfield, Johnny Bench
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: doing the same thing as well. A bunch of thoughts
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: about this and what it means to these teams.
- 1:31:23Speaker 10: It can be somewhat of a double edged sword. It
- 1:31:25Speaker 10: can be good in the fact that a lot of
- 1:31:26Speaker 10: guys it just takes a lot of pressure off the
- 1:31:29Speaker 10: defense and they can go out to the outfield and
- 1:31:32Speaker 10: they can just relax and focus on offense. It can
- 1:31:37Speaker 10: be a double edged sword and the fact that some
- 1:31:39Speaker 10: guys they lose the focus of being into every pitch
- 1:31:43Speaker 10: on the dirt and the concentration levels can affect their offense,
- 1:31:47Speaker 10: and so it's something that it affects every player a
- 1:31:51Speaker 10: little bit differently. From a health standpoint, it's certainly better,
- 1:31:55Speaker 10: you know, unless you're moving in the center field. It's
- 1:31:57Speaker 10: certainly better on their health to be in the outfield.
- 1:32:00Speaker 10: You know, I'd be handling the ball on the grind
- 1:32:02Speaker 10: of playing on the.
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: Dirt every day. But but some guys need that focus.
- 1:32:06Speaker 10: It's the same as you know, some guys can sit
- 1:32:08Speaker 10: on a bench and take four at bats to night
- 1:32:10Speaker 10: and be very very good at it.
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: Some guys have to do on the field.
- 1:32:13Speaker 10: So every player is different in this regard, and I
- 1:32:17Speaker 10: think what you're seeing now as a group of players
- 1:32:19Speaker 10: that are trying to do with the best they can
- 1:32:21Speaker 10: to make their teams as good as they could possibly
- 1:32:23Speaker 10: be defensively well.
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: And then also.
- 1:32:29Speaker 9: The deal is.
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: With the Dodgers with Mookie Batts going back over to
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: shortstop as well. He started it short last year, then
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: of course got injured, and then when he came back,
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: he went back into the outfield. But now with the
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: deals of Dodgers and Mookie's gone back to shortstop. I
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: remember last year you met a great point when you said,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: this is going to be really interesting to watch to
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: see how comfortable he can be at short and it
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: looked like he got pretty comfortable before.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: He got hurt.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: I don't know if we got an enough of a
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: sample size about that, But how about your thoughts on.
- 1:33:02Speaker 10: That, Well, they have two really young shortstops that even
- 1:33:08Speaker 10: if he can buy the time for them to get
- 1:33:10Speaker 10: up there, they're they're very very good defenders in Freeland
- 1:33:14Speaker 10: and Noah Miller. They're not going to be the offensive
- 1:33:16Speaker 10: players that you would want, but they're going to catch
- 1:33:19Speaker 10: everything and play above average defense. So this can buy
- 1:33:22Speaker 10: some time for the development of those two players and
- 1:33:25Speaker 10: or evaluate a shortstop from another club that they may
- 1:33:28Speaker 10: want to go add. But Mookie's just such a gifted player.
- 1:33:31Speaker 10: He's a once in a generation type player, and you
- 1:33:34Speaker 10: know he's obviously going to do whatever he has to
- 1:33:37Speaker 10: do to help his team win. And and they know
- 1:33:39Speaker 10: he's athletic enough, and he's certainly prepared, and with today's positioning,
- 1:33:43Speaker 10: they feel like it's something he can continue to do.
- 1:33:45Speaker 10: And so I'm sure that they will exhaust every effort
- 1:33:48Speaker 10: to make that possible in this season.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: Okay, all right, and then the final thing I wanted
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: to ask you about because you know this subject only
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: too well, and it's changes announced by the Baseball Hall
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: of Fame to the ERA Committee eligibility required it. So
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame, for folks who didn't know, announced
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: changes to their ERA Committee selection that allows players who've
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: been retired for more than fifteen years to be considered
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: for the Hall of Fame as well as managers, umpires
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: executive So, beginning this year, any Hall of Fame candidate
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: on an ERA Committee ballot who does not receive at
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: least five votes from the sixteen member ERA Committee will
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: not be eligible to be placed back on the ballot
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: in its next three year cycle. Now, a candidate can
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: still return to an ERA Committee ballot after skipping one cycle,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: but any candidate who does not receive five votes on
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: multiple ERA Committee ballots will no longer be eligible for
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: any future ballots. Do you think that this would be
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: an issue that might have some guys that are out
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: there on the bubble as possibility, because remember last year
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: that Classic Baseball Era Committee elect Dick Allen and the
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: Parker out of an eight player ballot, and then they
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: allowed Alan and Parker to earn induction in the Cooperstown
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: through that alternate path to the Traditional Writers Association America ballot.
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: How do you feel about that?
- 1:35:14Speaker 10: Well, you know, I worked with Jim, Tony and Tony
- 1:35:16Speaker 10: Larus every day and we actually talked about this yesterday
- 1:35:19Speaker 10: at breakfast for a very very long time.
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: And what I would say is.
- 1:35:24Speaker 10: That there's a there's enough communication and there's enough I
- 1:35:28Speaker 10: don't want to say rallying around or campaigning, but you know,
- 1:35:32Speaker 10: this is a very very prideful group. Uh, it's it's
- 1:35:36Speaker 10: obviously a very educated group when it comes to the
- 1:35:39Speaker 10: criteria of being in Cooperstown. And so I don't feel
- 1:35:43Speaker 10: like if a if a player has fallen off the ballot, uh,
- 1:35:47Speaker 10: that it's it's a player that that did deserve to
- 1:35:50Speaker 10: be in the Hall of Fame. These guys talk way
- 1:35:53Speaker 10: too much. There's too much communication, there's too much uh
- 1:35:57Speaker 10: you know, they meet all the time, they break down
- 1:35:59Speaker 10: the crime here. You they'll they'll balance out what one
- 1:36:02Speaker 10: guy's career in air was versus others. So I think
- 1:36:05Speaker 10: this is just kind of a way of filtering out
- 1:36:08Speaker 10: that borderline player, that that very very good player that's
- 1:36:11Speaker 10: not good enough being the Hall of fame and kind
- 1:36:13Speaker 10: of just cutting the list down a little bit over
- 1:36:15Speaker 10: the long term.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: Gino, I'll leave you with this today.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Today, one of a kind autograph baseball card featuring a
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: patch of the number thirty jersey that Paul Schemes wore
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: during his major league debut is headed to auction. What
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: kind of world are we living in now? I mean,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: what kind of money do you think this thing is
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: going to fetch for the first time? First year that
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: it says there's no reserve on the card. You can
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: put in a twenty dollars bit if you want, but
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: it's probably not going to stick for very long.
- 1:36:49Speaker 10: Something tells me the Pirates organization is gonna have something to.
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: Say about it.
- 1:36:54Speaker 10: Really yeah, I think that's something they want to get
- 1:36:57Speaker 10: their hands on, so it'll be interesting to all Right.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Hey, Gino, I appreciate the time. Thanks for joining us.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: We'll look forward to visiting next week.
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: Greg, take care bye.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: All right, that's Gean Watson from the Chicago White Sox
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: front office. You know this, this card has generated a
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: great deal of discussion. Normally it's the kind of discussion
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: it goes over like a Mickey Mantle card or a
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Honnice Wagner or Kim Griffy Junior or something like that.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: But this is it's the advantage to this Schemes card
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: is that social media has kind of amped it up
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: a little bit. That those other cards do not enjoy
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: that kind of advantage. So we'll see how that rolls through.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: All Right, we got more coming up and we continue
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: here on thirteen under the Zone. All right, thanks again
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: at Geene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: joining us.
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: I'm glad our resident Guardians fan checks in.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: So, speaking of position changes, the Guardians signed Tyler Naquin
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: as a pitcher. Yeah, remember when he played a text
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: A and M. It's a pretty good outfeeler. Naquin was
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: good played third base. So anyway, let's let's hear some
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: more from Jim Schlasnigle the Long Horns, uh head coach.
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: Uh and uh. This again.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: Goes to uh coming off the win on Tuesday night
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: over Texas A and M Corpus Christie and uh. It's
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: it's a it's a recap, but it's also with an
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: eye toward what's gonna happen with the upcoming series starting
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: tomorrow night against Santa Clara. So I want to start
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: off with a guy who has served the Long Horns
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: as a starter as a reliever. He looked great in
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: the Friday night series opener, the three games they played
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: in Las Vegas, Max Grubbs. He retired Washington on ten pitches,
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: and that was after Washington had really taken some real
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: hard licks against a Texas bullpen. But Grubs has also
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: kind of had a little bit of a bumpy ride
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: throughout his career. Would be it as a starter or
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: as a reliever, So the question for Schloss was how
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: pivotal is Max Grubbs, whether he's coming out of the
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: bullpen or more importantly as a starter.
- 1:39:30Speaker 8: Yeah, i'd be I mean, he certainly could start. But again,
- 1:39:33Speaker 8: you saw Ruger with a little bit of rest. Who
- 1:39:37Speaker 8: gave him that rest? Grubbs gave him that rest. Ruger
- 1:39:40Speaker 8: was infinitely better tonight than he's been in the last
- 1:39:42Speaker 8: ten days because he just had his legs under him
- 1:39:44Speaker 8: a little bit, ran the fastball up to ninety five,
- 1:39:47Speaker 8: and breaking pitches were had more bite and crisp.
- 1:39:50Speaker 9: And that's he's good.
- 1:39:51Speaker 8: But it's also because of Grubs picking up a little
- 1:39:53Speaker 8: bit of flack and so and Andre, you know, so
- 1:39:58Speaker 8: that'd be fun if you had Grubs, Ruger Flores sitting
- 1:40:06Speaker 8: down there as your three pretty good rieties, you know,
- 1:40:10Speaker 8: and you know that's just trying to put together staff
- 1:40:13Speaker 8: over the course of time and then hopefully we'll knock
- 1:40:15Speaker 8: on wood would be injury free. But you know, when
- 1:40:18Speaker 8: you give guys opportunities like that, if somebody does need
- 1:40:21Speaker 8: a break or something something happens, then you have guys
- 1:40:24Speaker 8: with some experience.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: All right, Now to the fielding and the long Orange
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: struggled in fielding the other night. Now, to be fair, also,
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: you had an incredibly windy ballpark, and that even played
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: to when Easton Windfield was coming over to catch the
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: ball in left field and had it drop or.
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: Was it the lights or was it both?
- 1:40:50Speaker 8: You know, I think that I think he we had
- 1:40:53Speaker 8: talked about we did fly ball, you know, we did
- 1:40:57Speaker 8: some pop up practice before the game today, and how
- 1:40:59Speaker 8: the wind was pushing ball, and talk to him about
- 1:41:02Speaker 8: when the win's pushing it that way, you can't run
- 1:41:04Speaker 8: really fast at it because it ends up behind you.
- 1:41:07Speaker 8: And I think that's what he did. Originally, he was
- 1:41:09Speaker 8: waiting for the ball to come back to him and
- 1:41:11Speaker 8: the win had died a little bit on that one,
- 1:41:13Speaker 8: and and then you know he just kind of overran it,
- 1:41:17Speaker 8: tried to catch it with two hands.
- 1:41:19Speaker 9: So we got work to do there. But he's a
- 1:41:21Speaker 9: good player.
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: He'll be fun, all right.
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: So extrapolating that out further beyond just the singular nation
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: of the singular nature of that one specific game, how
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: does schloss Field about feel about his team's slug his
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: start in terms of feeling percentage and some of the
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: mistakes they made in the field, not just in the outfield,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: but also in the infield, some of the mistakes that
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: they made early on.
- 1:41:52Speaker 8: I mean, it's just the fielding percentage is it's not
- 1:41:55Speaker 8: it's horrible, obviously, but it's it's relative to who's making.
- 1:42:02Speaker 9: The errors, right. So Jalen's playing awesome.
- 1:42:04Speaker 8: I mean he had one kick out of his glove
- 1:42:06Speaker 8: on that fast surface in Vegas. Mendoz's playing great, Shooter's
- 1:42:10Speaker 8: playing awesome. Gasprino is as good as there is, Ballow's
- 1:42:13Speaker 8: as good as there is. So I've been on teams
- 1:42:16Speaker 8: that one year at TCU we had a horrible fielding percentations,
- 1:42:18Speaker 8: but pitchers made seventeen errors. They're throwing the ball over
- 1:42:21Speaker 8: the field, so you know, you got to look at
- 1:42:24Speaker 8: each one individually. Should we be better, for sure, But
- 1:42:28Speaker 8: there's also some really good things in there too than
- 1:42:31Speaker 8: Ryland's catching awesome, So the you know, fielding percentage doesn't
- 1:42:34Speaker 8: tell the whole story. But I understand what you're saying
- 1:42:36Speaker 8: in your offense is.
- 1:42:40Speaker 3: Yeah. That They went on to talking about the offense
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: after that.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: A couple more from Jim Schlasniegel, one of those being
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: what he's getting out of his catching position. Rylan Galvan,
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: of course, is the unquestioned leader behind the plate, and
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: he's really starting to hit now hit two home work
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: the other night batting in that nine hole. But his
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: biggest value, of course is thrown out would be base
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: runners and feeling that position and tough as nails.
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: Took a.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: Foul ball that was close to the most vulnerable part
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: of a guy's body, if you know what I mean.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: But it wasn't quite there was just a little bit
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: inside on the thigh. Anyway, it was tough, but he
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: is tough as nails and goes.
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: Back to work.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: So Schloss was asked, what's the importance of the role
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: behind the plate and how important is the catcher to
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: this particular long worn team.
- 1:43:39Speaker 8: I mean, there's never been a good team without a
- 1:43:40Speaker 8: good catcher. Ever, There's never been a good baseball team
- 1:43:44Speaker 8: with a bad catchers.
- 1:43:45Speaker 9: Never been a good baseball team with a bad shortstop.
- 1:43:47Speaker 8: And so you know, when I got the job here, obviously,
- 1:43:51Speaker 8: the most important guys to hold on to outside of
- 1:43:55Speaker 8: Max Blue was the two catchers, which one of them
- 1:43:58Speaker 8: is playing now playing first base. But Galvon and Flores,
- 1:44:01Speaker 8: I mean those a big in gas Brando. Those are
- 1:44:03Speaker 8: the biggest recruits you could possibly have. There's no transfer
- 1:44:07Speaker 8: portal guys that are going to be better Longhorns than
- 1:44:09Speaker 8: those guys.
- 1:44:10Speaker 9: So I'm holding onto those.
- 1:44:12Speaker 8: Guys, and whether it be the draft Jalen or guys
- 1:44:15Speaker 8: that could transfer massive.
- 1:44:17Speaker 9: So Ryland, he's so steady and had some good ones
- 1:44:22Speaker 9: at A and M Jackson.
- 1:44:23Speaker 8: Appelle, Troy Klantz. Obviously we had awesome catching at TCU
- 1:44:27Speaker 8: for a long time. On on your on those great teams.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you guys like Brian Holliday and some
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: of those other guys he had there at TCU, they
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: were they were tough behind the plate. But again, Ryland
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: Galvon pretty pretty dog on solid there as well, and
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: he mentioned the other guys played first base.
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: It's Kiball Schuschler. Of course you could catch, but he's
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: playing first right now for Texas. All right.
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: Of course, the log Horns play Santa Clara three game
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: weekend series six point thirty Tomorrow night, two o'clock Saturday,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: one o'clock. Someday you'll hear all three games here on
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: the Zone U Tomorrow six fifteen, airtime, six thirty, first pitch.
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the program.
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: We had down the home stretch of this one as
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: we get ready to head toward the weekend. Felt good
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: to be back in the seat today. You know, we
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: had a little technically, and for folks who care to know,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: sometimes you can have a little bit of those technical
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: challenges when the host is sitting in one chair and
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: the producer is sitting in another chair. But instead of
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: eight feet from me, he's eighty miles from me. So,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: for being honest with our man, ANDREWS Himmel, he is
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: running the show from me.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: We did a good job today, Craig. Considering everything else,
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: I thought it was a pretty good.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: First time we ever tried this, like this, and yeah,
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: we just had a little bumper two with something. The
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: computers that run everything sometimes didn't want to fully cooperate,
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: so it took a little quick logging back in to
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: make sure everything worked out.
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: So it was fine, and it'll and tomorrow, I.
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: Know you'll be on the host side of it all
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: the way through, although we're gonna have one segment tomorrow
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: with me from the ballpark in the three o'clock hour,
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: and we may have the old grizzled baseball playing coaching
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: legend Ty Harrington joining me.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: Tomorrow in one segment there.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: And then, like I said, you'll have Cameron Parker joining
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: you prior to his call of the Texas women's quarter
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: final game in the SEC Tournament against the winner of
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: the game that's going to start in about eight minutes
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Winner of that game,
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: we'll play Texas more afternoon at five o'clock and Cameron
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: will be joined by Kathy Harston for the call of that.
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: You should know, Zim, that Cameron has safely touched down
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: in Greenville. Not only has he safely touched down in Greenville,
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: more importantly, from Cameron's perspective, he has been picked up
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: from the airport and spirited off to join the team
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: just in time for an early team dinner.
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: So that's why it's not text me back.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, so you know, he's he's he's with the
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: team dinner. So that's that's good. That that's a good thing.
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: And I sent again, here's a department of true confessions.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: I sent Andrew a photo of Cameron Parker
