- Chuck Atkinson: Well, welcome every Jeremy Spencer: And that's it. Chuck Atkinson: welcome everybody to the first episode of Play Under Review, starring Chuck Atkinson and Jeremy Spencer. Jeremy, I'd like to say a few words to our guests here today. Jeremy Spencer: Well, I just you're making it rather formal, Chuck, but I'm here to Chuck Atkinson: I I try, I I try, I try. Jeremy Spencer: Well well yeah, like you're trying to make it all professional here to start. Like Chuck Atkinson: Well, well listen. You got you gotta tr you gotta start somewhere, you we s Jeremy Spencer: So so this is a yeah, so but this is this is a new idea. This is a this is a new a new idea that has respawned from an old idea that we never had the guts to pull the trigger on. So Welcome. Chuck Atkinson: Absolutely, absolutely. and yes, Jeremy, thank you. It this is Chuck Atkinson of course. yeah, no, as Jeremy was saying, this is something that we've been kicking the can on for what, the better part of twenty years? Twenty something something like that. Jeremy Spencer: Well yeah, but technology didn't exist at that point. we would have needed a cable network. But Chuck Atkinson: No no Jeremy Spencer: nobody'd want to do that. But Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, no. Jeremy Spencer: w we don't need cable networks. We don't even know if anybody will listen to us. But Chuck Atkinson: No. No, but it's worth it's it's worth a shot, right? Like you said, Jeremy Spencer: Well, it's just entertaining for ourselves. It's it's you know, there's a there's lots to chat about when it comes to sports and and what better time of year to start than right now. You got everything happening. We got we Chuck Atkinson: Abs Absolutely. Jeremy Spencer: got the Jays who all of a sudden figured out how to play baseball. they could be teasing us, but I I think I think I I think they're gonna get themselves in the playoffs. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, it it it's it's looking like it. Yeah, that's that's that's a great point. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: So and and then and then my favorite time of s year is is is hockey season. the Habs are coming and and we just we just went by the the annual Riverview Fantasy Football Draft and this has been going on for eons and yeah I've never had the the luxury to win it. I've ran the league forever and ever. Never won. And Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: I trophy sitting right over Chuck's shoulder right there. That that's the hardware. Chuck Atkinson: you mean this one here. Yeah, I I I appreciate Jeremy Spencer: That's the hardware right there. Chuck Atkinson: absolutely I appreciate you bringing that up, Jerry. And great point, you know, we've been doing this league since nineteen ninety-six. And you know, going back to the days of newspaper scoring, where we would only really find out who won the games on Thursday going into the following weekend. our our great statistician and scorekeeper from back in the day, Wayne Spencer. Jeremy's father. yeah. Jerry, you know, he he's a classic. He's still he's still in the league with us there, the the Irving Oilers. but you know technology's certainly helped Jeremy Spencer: The classic. Chuck Atkinson: us at it's it's certainly helped us out and saved some definite definite man hours for Wayne. Jeremy Spencer: man hours are are down. but you guys are still a pain in my ass every year, so the Chuck Atkinson: Well, you know what? If if if you're not winning, it's an easy mark, right? If championship speak, championship speak. Back back to back champions, might I add, back to back champions. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Well that's the re that's the recent history. But Chuck, I mean, take a look at the trophy. What what what do we got for names on this trophy? Like go back to when this started that we've been the recording. I mean w what's on there? Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. So on and then on this beauty, you know, this actually this trophy I think how far does it go back this trophy itself? What fifteen years? Maybe a little bit further back. Not since Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, i it didn't it it didn't h start with the league. I think we put the plaques on to go back to what we had records for, but Chuck Atkinson: Right. Jeremy Spencer: that trophy might be that's probably been around for close to fifteen years. I Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: mean, it's been glued and re pieced back together a number of times, I'm I'm aware of. So Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: and probably I'm not aware of all the times. There's there's there's been repairs done to that trophy. Chuck Atkinson: And I'm certain there's I'm certain there's some unmentionable stains around here somewhere from some some uneasy nights this thing might have had as well. Jeremy Spencer: well y you'll notice you can't drink out of this one. Chuck Atkinson: No, no, no, no, but there's some holes in it for some reason. I don't know what these guys have been doing to it over the years. I don't know. But yeah, no, the some great winners on here, smoking villagers who what what's Bobby's the BT Bandits. Bobby's now known as the BT Bandits. Yeah, and Jeremy Spencer: Smoking villagers like He's currently the B T bandits. Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: you know, the he's on there a couple of times. He changed up and Jeremy Spencer: Well that's 'cause remember, he had he that team wasn't just Bob. That was a a Smurfy and Bob team. Chuck Atkinson: Right. Jeremy Spencer: That team goes back. The the Smoken Villagers has a little bit of history. So that that was back when Mr. Murphy was in our league. Chuck Atkinson: That's right. you know, Luke's been on here a couple of times. you know, your dad's on here a couple of times as well. Jeremy Spencer: He claims he claims he should be on there more times, like 'cause we don't have the the stuff that's not under record, you know, where we don't have records. Apparently, rumor has Chuck Atkinson: Right. Okay. Jeremy Spencer: it that there's other there's other trophies that or other times he won. It's just not recorded. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. So it's like the Babe Ruth era where everything was in black and white and you only had the record of it if Jeremy Spencer: That's right. Chuck Atkinson: you're actually there at the game. Okay. Jeremy Spencer: Like that's prehistory. That's A D. Chuck Atkinson: And yeah, so our most recent victories the Chachis who are no longer BC Yeah Chachi's. Jeremy Spencer: Or no, B C B C Chachis. The Chachis yeah, they won a couple. They're no longer. That's what is Matt yeah. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, he's he's since moved on to other leagues, other ventures. Yeah, Matt. Yeah, he's the he was the Vikings fan. That's right. And the Jeremy Spencer: That's right. Chachi. Chuck Atkinson: the overachievers, who, you know, we've since come to regret allowing into the league. they made the appearance Jeremy Spencer: Front frontage. Chuck Atkinson: once. Once they he showed up and he had a great team. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: It's like falling into a riches. He claimed a championship. Jeremy Spencer: No well the first year the f the first year he came in, he drafted his team, he won the league. And then it's been a down slide since then. Fr and then Frontain Chuck Atkinson: Well yeah, yeah, yeah, hey, hey, he he had good he had he had Jeremy Spencer: came in and drafted him a team and won it for him. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, he had good bones. He had good bones, right? So he had a good start. Somebody left him some good bones a year before. And then Yeah, Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Anyway, so that's the story of the overachievers. Chuck Atkinson: and you know, our most recent years, well, you're looking at him. You're looking at him, what can I say? I'm proud to be your champion. Back to back years. We're trying for the three Pete. And listen, as far as as far as DMC Jeremy Spencer: Well, as I mentioned earlier, a three peop Chuck Atkinson: as far as CMC and Taylor take me. That's how far we're gonna go. Jeremy Spencer: A three peat will not be possible this year, as mentioned earlier. This is the year of the fleas. Chuck Atkinson: Well, unfortunately for you, I seem to have some medication for that. It, you know, tends to shoe those things off during the season when I play Jeremy Spencer: We're we're immune to raid. Chuck Atkinson: No, we're we're off to a great start, folks. And you know, I hope that we do a lot of these episodes for everybody, and this is kind of what we're gonna be doing. A little bit of banter back and forth, a lot of back and forth, comedic style. we're gonna have some funny takes, some serious takes perhaps as well. but no, hopefully it's a good time, it will be a good time. And we hope you guys enjoy the ride and hopefully Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, of course it's gonna be a good time. I mean who who's your who who who are your teams, Chuck? Like when we're talking when we're talking Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. No, it's Jeremy Spencer: pro sports, rankems, let's say from your most important to the least Chuck Atkinson: Hmm. Jeremy Spencer: of your and maybe with leagues. You know, like w what's your favorite? And yeah. We'll do a rundown. Chuck Atkinson: Sure, sure. Yeah, we can do a we Yeah, let's do a rundown. so let's if Jeremy Spencer: So just so just so everybody knows. I mean everybody knows me knows, but a and most people know you know. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, you you yeah, you're a Toronto Maple Leaf fan, if I'm not mistaken, right? That's right, yeah. Jeremy Spencer: That that's right. Yeah. That's right. Chuck Atkinson: no, so you know, this time of year, my favorite time of year football season, I am a Chargers fan, a Los Angeles Chargers fan through and through. the powder blue, the powder blue are Jeremy Spencer: Powder blue. I got the powder blue on today, but it's a little gorny. Chuck Atkinson: they are the most beautiful jerseys in football. unfortunately, their win loss record in the playoffs indicate otherwise. I've been a fan of their since shoot, I think back as far as 1996, even when we started watching and partaking in fancy football. going back Jeremy Spencer: Nineteen ninety six. Chuck Atkinson: to Nate, yeah, yeah. That's right. yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Natron means holy yeah. Chuck Atkinson: So there's a little blast from the past, but that led in, of course, to the Ledanian Tomlinson years, LT. the my favorite best running back of all time Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, we all know about those years. Chuck Atkinson: fantasy football season he wasn't going anywhere i was willing to pay top dollar if it cost me my team in the in the process he was coming home no and you know as far as hockey goes i'd say the detroit red wings of course i say that padled that suit jersey behind me the old magician and i do have a small tattoo of theirs which is really not all that visible anymore it was a back to back promise that bob and i made with each other back in i think nine seven or nine eight Jeremy Spencer: That's right. Holy smokes, forgot about that. Yeah. Well I knew you both had Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Yeah, and Jeremy Spencer: them, but I forgot about the bet. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, you know, with if they if they did the back to back, we were gonna get the the the tattoos. And they Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, and you did it. Chuck Atkinson: did. They did. They had a fantastic team. full of Hall of Famers from Steve Eisman, Dino Cicerelli, Paul Coffee, Dominic Hashik. was no no Hashik wasn't on that team back then, wasn't he? That was the No, he was. I believe he was. Jeremy Spencer: Mm. Yeah, yeah, well was Has Hasik won one of the cops. Was it on that one? Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, I know he was there for one. I know it was Osgood and Vernon. Jeremy Spencer: I'd look but everything just froze on my computer right now. But yeah. Chuck Atkinson: and then yeah, I know he was there for what was it the three? Anyways, anyways, I'm getting sidetracked. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: This is what we're talking about, folks. so yeah, so Detroit, Blue Jays in baseball, of course. they're having an up and down season, but they're still in the thick of things this year. And as far as basketball, the the Toronto Raptors, they're yeah. They're the Raptors. They Kawhi Leonard back. We'll see what the kind of circus that entails this year as well. Yeah, so that's just a little bit of a rundown to my sports teams. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. You're Jeremy Spencer: That's right. I think I'm actually gonna get to see a Raps I think I'm gonna get to see a Raps game this year. Gonna see them against the Knicks. I think. Chuck Atkinson: going up to big T O and was it November? December. Jeremy Spencer: November, I think. Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. Against the Knicks, yeah, that's gonna be awesome to see the the champs and the Raptors here. That's gonna Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: be a playoff type matchup. especially if Kawhi is not suspended for that game and actually healthy enough to play. So Jeremy Spencer: So holy shit. Well, I'm just going back to the Red Wings and Goalies. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: It appears that Osgood won all three. Ninety seven, ninety eight, and two thousand eight. Th there's no mention of Hashik. Y does that make sense? Chuck Atkinson: Was Hashik was Hashik not involved on any of them? That's that that's not right. That's not right. There you go. Jeremy Spencer: never mind. Two thousand two. Two thousand two was hashtag. Chuck Atkinson: There you go. Yeah, 'cause we had a our we had we had a four cup run in a matter of I think it was what eight years. No, three cup run, something like Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: that. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Friggin' cat trying to attack me. Chuck Atkinson: When you make the when you make the playoffs every year for a record setting amount of years, it's hard to lose track of the amount of cups you win because of all the playoffs you make every year and you know, champagne problems, but not so much these days for the Red Wings. No, we suck. We suck. but Jeremy Spencer: Well, I don't know Larkin is your captain and he's still wanting out before the season starts, so I don't know how that's all gonna end up. Chuck Atkinson: Well he yeah. He he's he's the captain of the SSS sinking ship right now. That's what he is. Jeremy Spencer: Man. Chuck Atkinson: He is. I mean, the Izer plan didn't really pan out to what we were hoping for, but I digressed. Jeremy Spencer: It did not did Chuck Atkinson: No, I digress. You know, that's Jeremy Spencer: What's Weiserman doing now? Chuck Atkinson: I think he's getting ready for his next fishing trip, I think. That's what the Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: spokesperson of the comp our organization does, you know, they when they're fired but you're still in town, they make you the spokesperson for maybe little Caesars. I don't know what what he's up to these days. Hopefully he's not helping with the draft process anymore. 'Cause that just that just sucked. It just sucked. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, it sucks. It sucks. And we're like he built a good team in Tampa and then he didn't win there 'cause he was in Detroit Chuck Atkinson: Well no. Jeremy Spencer: by the time they won. And then Chuck Atkinson: Well, I mean, yeah, it's yeah, listen, yeah, he built a great team. He he he Jeremy Spencer: Didn't really turn into Chuck Atkinson: he drafted a great he drafted luckily, you know, some great players. we all fall backwards sometimes into a little pot of gold and you know, unintentionally. but when you have eight years, ten years consecutively of doing something and it's the same over and over and over, and it's the same questions over and over. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, it's Chuck Atkinson: What are we talking about? What are we talking about? I mean, he just the only reason why he was given that kind of l that kind of rope was because of his last name and who he and who he is and what he did for the organization. I mean, you you take you you take the new GM, Jeremy Spencer: Well yeah, and it's Stevie Why. Of course he's and he deserved it. Chuck Atkinson: you take the new GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, whoever this cupcake is, selling hamburgers for Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: hot selling hamburgers for hockey players. I don't know what his job is, but you take him and you put him in Detroit, you give him three years, he's out. But because he's the you know. Steve Weiserman, like I said, you you give him an extra little length of rope and he just hangs himself even more. So yeah. But anyways, Jeremy Spencer: That's too bad. But Just got good, but you just couldn't get good enough. And I had goaltending problems a little bit. Chuck Atkinson: Well, if if good is if good is just coming one point short of the playoffs for consecutive years, then yeah, he did great. He was awesome. Jeremy Spencer: Well, you got to a point that that looked like it was gonna overtake that like two or three years in a row, but it just didn't get better. So unlike my habs Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Unlike the habs, unlike your habs, which I want to transition to so Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, buddy. Chuck Atkinson: we can get off the negative and go to a positive and have some smiley, feely happy feelings and get off my sour plus Jeremy Spencer: That's correct. Go have. Chuck Atkinson: non playoff teams and let's focus on what you like to cheer for. tell us a little bit more about yourself and your teams, Jer. Jeremy Spencer: Well well it's the Habs. That's that's eighty percent of my sports life. I watch all the Habs. Chuck Atkinson: Ha ha ha. Jeremy Spencer: I do yeah. So that I I'm always paying attention to, but the Habs are my team. They've always been my team. My dad as a Habs fan. Just kind of indoctrinated into it. It's Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: it's in the blood. I've it yeah. So but Habs it is, but then When we're talking football, I'm I'm a Packers fan. I don't know why I became that way. I I like football's different than most sports for me. I I like I like a lot of teams, but I just I always ended up being a Packers fan. So that's that's my go to team. But unlike hockey, I can't cheer for anybody. I can't Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: it there's no chance I'll cheer for another team in hockey. It's just not happening. But in football You know, I've got a few teams I like. I like the Bills and I like I like the Packers. I like you know, I've liked the the Chiefs the last few years. They've been fun to watch. But I'm always Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, they Jeremy Spencer: cheering for the pack. But I can I can I can watch any game on Sunday football and be just as entertained. That's but I you won't see me tuning into Winnipeg Jets, Chuck Atkinson: San Jose Sharks. Jeremy Spencer: San Jose Sharks game. You know. Maybe if if if Chuck Atkinson: May maybe maybe nowadays Jeremy Spencer: It may Yeah, maybe if somebody Chuck Atkinson: I bet I mean, I don't wanna overtake you here, but Jeremy Spencer: on here wants me to talk about the sharks, I'll I'll check out the sharks. But we'll Well, and I have celebrating my hockey pool. So I Chuck Atkinson: Right. I mean they do have Celebrini now who's a a really good player, a great player. And and that always helps, right? When you when you yeah, when you have fantasy guys on your team that you wouldn't normally watch their teams play, it makes watching their teams a little more tolerable. Especially during football season. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, a hundred percent. That the the that's the whole that's the fantasy sports angle Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: is that you end up like when you have two fantasy football teams, you you got guys that you're playing against your own team half the time. You don't even know who the hell to cheer for. You're just it's it's Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, that's right. Jeremy Spencer: it's fun. So and confusing. Chuck Atkinson: Right. You want the Packers to win by, you know, you're you're playing Jeremy Spencer: But the guy I'm playing in the other league has the Packers defense. Chuck Atkinson: Well and maybe you're you're you know you're you're betting on not that we condone gambling, wink wink, sports gambling especially, wink wink. Jeremy Spencer: I have to as we're talking plug in my computer because this could die suddenly if I don't plug this in. Chuck Atkinson: And break. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, no, we're good. We're still good. Chuck Atkinson: All right. Jeremy Spencer: And now we're back. Welcome back. yeah. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, no, I get what you're saying though about the it's hard to cheer for one team and then you have conflicting interests that might oppose another avenue, right? So whether it's fantasy football, Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: a point spread perhaps is maybe getting a little too close for your flavor. But yeah. so what are you thinking about baseball right now? I know you're a Jays fan as well. baseball season's winding down. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. I I I'm a I'm a I was an Expos fan, coordinated along with my habs. loved the Expos and it took me probably ten years before I could even cheer for the Jays, really. I I I didn't watch baseball that much. I couldn't cheer for where that ever the what where did the expos go? Washington. Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, the nationals, yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, there's no chance even even though some of the the players went that couldn't cheer for them. I didn't like the Jays because I can't stand the Leafs. So it's it's a Toronto Chuck Atkinson: Ha ha. Jeremy Spencer: thing. No, it's true. Like I felt about the Jays the same way I felt about the Leafs. But if I wanted to have a a ball team in in Canada eventually. And and Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, to come around. Jeremy Spencer: and back when they won the World Series, of course, I I bandwagon jumped onto that. That was that was an awesome two years. So Yeah. No, I I so the so the Jays but as far as the Jays right now Chuck Atkinson: they're fun. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: I was pretty disgusted with him. But the the it was a ter it was it was a frustrating first half of the year. but and and still if you're a Vladim fan, something's not right there, but Chuck Atkinson: It's it's frustrating. Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: th they're they're looking they're a lot of fun these days. Max Scherzer is wicked. He's just as mean as ever and and Ernie Clement batting with everybody else's bats is Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: it But they're a good they're a fun team. Like there's not a lot of teams in baseball and I'm by I I'm biased because I'm we're talking Jays now, but I mean when you're watching, they're not there's not as many teams having as much fun as as that team does when they get on a roll. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, they they have a great group of personalities. They they they really blend together. that's what I've noticed over last couple of years. And this is something that's been growing within the franchise for a little while too. You can see back to the days of Batista and Donaldson and those guys, how the the city and the clubhouse that that that's what the team really needed and and the right group of guys. Now, like you said, you know, Vladdy's having a for by his standards you know, a down year. Jeremy Spencer: Not a very good year. Chuck Atkinson: A not a very good year. That's putting it mildly, he would say Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: he would he would admit it himself. what's Jeremy Spencer: But Chuck Atkinson: what's the solution? I don't know. at for the first half of the season, I was thinking and comparing him and Bo together and and looking at their numbers side by side. And the only conclusion is they miss each other. It's like it's like it's like a it's like Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, well that's what I Chuck Atkinson: a couple that that love each other and they want to be together, Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: but they have to go to work in two separate parts of the country. And they can only see each other a few times a year. Yeah. And and they're and they're Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Yeah, they were they were sad. But Chuck Atkinson: and they're playing sad too. And their numbers would tell you they're sad. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. yeah. But the the the upside to all of this is is if the Jays can continue what they're doing and just Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: and get themselves squeaked in, there's the Vladdy hasn't done anything very much yet. So if you if you add Vladdy to this mix, it's gonna be a tough team again to beat. Vladdy can Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. A play I if you can Jeremy Spencer: st he he hadn't forgot how to play baseball or forgot how to hit. The guy's gonna figure it out. Chuck Atkinson: Right. If you can get maybe a a a a a kick start, a little playoff Vladdy from last year reappearing over the next couple of weeks to lead into a potential playoff push, you Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: know, that would be fantastic. yeah, Max Jeremy Spencer: Well that's what I that that's what I mean. And if that could happen then the Jays things are looking up for the Jays. I wish Gossman was still on the team. He's like my favorite guy, but Chuck Atkinson: Well, fine well w well, yeah, so do I, but funny enough, ever since and not ever since, but if maybe a week or two before, probably more so around the all-star break. That's when that that's Jeremy Spencer: A little before they started going. Chuck Atkinson: when that's when they started to you can see the change, the wins start happening, they're start winning the series every you know, two to the three, and they had a nice run. They they traded Gosman, but I think you know what, in the long run, even in the immediate Soriano is the better of the two pitchers. He's younger, he's stronger, his fastball's better. Gosman, Gos you look Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, so I like Soriana. Chuck Atkinson: but if you look at Gaussman's numbers, and I get what you're saying about him, you know, fan favorite and all. Yeah, his numbers this year, he was four Jeremy Spencer: Well and he's he's d he's pitched a couple of good games. Chuck Atkinson: he was four and nine, five and nine when the Jays traded him. His ERA was four and a half, Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: almost five runs. You know, he just wasn't the same guy he was last year or in the previous years. He's an extra year older. sure he's he's gonna get you maybe a strikeout per inning kind of thing still. But you know, there there was something off about his game this year. And, you know, we got a pitcher on the other end of it, Soriano, who is the exact opposite. We got him when he was nine and six. Jeremy Spencer: yeah. And I like the shit on Shapiro or whatever his name is in Atkins, but that Chuck Atkinson: yeah. Jeremy Spencer: does it this probably is a is gonna be a good deal. But 'cause I like Soriano. Chuck Atkinson: It i it it's it's the it's the it's the immediate I think they're helping and the land Jeremy Spencer: Well, they didn't also give up on anything. They just made a move or two. Chuck Atkinson: Right. They they basically it was a lateral move. What I would say it's a lateral plus one. You're getting a a top two, top three starting pitcher for your rotation. You're replacing one and getting one, but you're Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: also getting a little extra something out of this guy here that the other one maybe was lacking like strength. I I just think there was a little bit of fatigue in in Gaussman in in his game right now. He's never missed an inning really in or a game in his career. At least for the last ten years that I've known. And you know, he it's gonna wear down a little bit and his numbers have just ballooned a little bit over the last year and a half, where it's like, all right, his contract was coming up anyways. Now you have Soriano for at least team control for I think three years. So barring what happens next year with a strike potentially, and then you know, be Jeremy Spencer: Strike. Chuck Atkinson: and be and beyond. Hey, listen, baseball's baseball. When it comes down to it, I I get why they want us I a cap. I do. It's the only sport that doesn't have a cap and it's quite quite frankly, it's ridiculous. It is. I mean Jeremy Spencer: they should have a cap. It's absolutely ridiculous. But there's teams Chuck Atkinson: Really. Jeremy Spencer: way, way under the cap that cap's not gonna help. Chuck Atkinson: Well not really. Not really, because I think most teams for the most part, I I if I'm not mistaken, once again, these this going off my head, are right around at the floor, maybe seventy to eighty million dollars. So with the the floor used to be thirty, forty for the Pittsburgh's the Oakland A's of the world, those teams, but those as as the salaries have changed, they've made more money. Jeremy Spencer: Well and we're yeah, and we're lucky 'cause the Jays actually spends money. Chuck Atkinson: Well yeah, big market team. They're they're always gonna be a top five spender every year. And if they're not, they're not trying hard enough. Plain and simple. I mean if you have if you live in Jeremy Spencer: Well, they gotta be R they they they've got the whole country to draw from. They sh they better they should and it's Rogers. Chuck Atkinson: Well, not just that, they're a top they're a top five market. Yeah, you're taught you're you're owned by a media corporation conglomerate. And you know, hey, if it if it if it hey, if it if it means you Jeremy Spencer: That's screwing up hockey right now. But anyway, that's another story. Chuck Atkinson: know raising my my Rogers rate a few dollars more to get Shohei Otani, then you should have. You know, but you didn't. But you didn't. So yeah, you know, Blue Jays they're gonna I think they're gonna do well. I'm actually gonna go up and see a game there, second last game of the season. they're playing the Reds. so it's gonna be an awesome weekend. we were up there last last year for the weekend series as well. It was a great time, full house, playoff atmosphere leading into it. And hopefully it's the same this year. Except for Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: it's not trying to get the division, it's trying to actually get into the playoffs. So a little bit more on the line, I think, as far as trying to actually make the playoffs and already having your ticket booked. So we'll see what Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: happens. We'll see what happens. Fingers crossed. But Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. I find the we're just just to touch back on the highest the highest salaried teams and we all knew the Dodgers, of course, that would be leading, Chuck Atkinson: the d Dodgers. Jeremy Spencer: but it's like d it's currently the Dodgers have a payroll of Chuck Atkinson: Mets. Jeremy Spencer: between four hundred and one and four hundred and thirty million. The Mets Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, that's that's like th that's like a that's like a week, I think, for the for the Dodgers, isn't it? Four hundred and thirty million a week is what they pay their players. I'm kidding. I'm I'm kidding I'm kidding. It's the it's a season. But but yeah. Jeremy Spencer: yeah, of course not. But yeah, but and the Mets are at three sixty nine, the the Yankees Chuck Atkinson: The Yankees. Jeremy Spencer: are at three thirty three, the Phillies are at three fifteen, and the Jays are at three twelve ish. Two two seventy eight to three twelve, is what they're saying. Chuck Atkinson: Blue Jays. I I I would have thought I would have thought maybe the Padres would have been around there somewhere. Jeremy Spencer: Didn't give me I only asked for the top five, but the Jays Chuck Atkinson: Okay. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: the J's are, of course, right within that. Like they're not it's not like they're not trying. But there needs to be Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. no, no, yeah, they they spend the money just Jeremy Spencer: there needs to be a cap, I think, just to just to stop Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, that Jeremy Spencer: things from like the the the Dodgers. Like that's ridiculous. And it was the Yankees before that. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. And well, it's also it's Jeremy Spencer: There's always gonna be one of them. Chuck Atkinson: but it's also spending your money wisely. Okay. It also has to do with that. Like if you're if you're spending big money, if you if you if you're if you're getting if you're getting the Jeremy Spencer: Well, is it? 'Cause you're paying you're paying a luxury tax. Chuck Atkinson: return, if you're getting the return, if you're if you're bringing in the championships, then I get it. If there's no cap and you're the Dodgers, do what you gotta do. Until un until you show me a cap. Well Jeremy Spencer: Where does the where does the luxury tax start? Where does the luxury tax start? At about a hundred and Chuck Atkinson: I think it's probab I think it's probably around I think it's what three no two eighty five. Two eighty five? Jeremy Spencer: Where does Chuck Atkinson: Two hundred and eighty five million? Three hundred million right around there, I'd say. I I I'm probably off by about ten. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. I'll tell you in two seconds here. The threshold is two hundred and forty four million. Chuck Atkinson: Two forty four before the tax. Okay. So yeah, so they're they're they're they're they're Jeremy Spencer: There's different tiers of it. Chuck Atkinson: yeah, yeah, with baseball, yeah. They I think there's what, two tiers? Three t three mm. Jeremy Spencer: Once you hit three hundred and four million, there's an additional sixty percent surcharge. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. yeah, so they're they're they're they're nuts. I mean they're what they're actually paying Shohei Otani though is not actually that much. That that's Jeremy Spencer: No, it's all bonus and Chuck Atkinson: that's that's he's that's all back loaded down the road after he's well and retired, right? So a lot of that Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, they probably made deals with him like Kauai or something. Chuck Atkinson: Well they're paying they're not I don't I don't know if they did that for Kyle Tucker. Thankfully the Jays didn't do that deal. Can you imagine paying Vladdy and Kyle Tucker? They would have combined Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: like fourteen home runs. Fourteen. I Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: think Kyle Tucker is like ten home runs maybe. Maybe. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: That's crazy too. These both guys, their contract started and they're that's a lot of pressure, Chuck Atkinson: This year. Jeremy Spencer: man, too, to be making five hundred million dollars and and have to Chuck Atkinson: But both but with Jeremy Spencer: live up to that. Chuck Atkinson: but with Vladdy though I was kinda scared about his five hundred million and I'll tell you why. When he hit the forty seven home runs, that was what, twenty twenty one? Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, I don't remember. Chuck Atkinson: You look at his home run. If you look at his home run total ever since then, there hasn't been a gone down and gone up year, like peaks and valleys. It's all it's all declined pretty much. I think what do you have twenty-eight, twenty-six last year? And maybe thirty-two. But it wasn't like a a super, you know, powerful season by home run standards go. That's that's just Jeremy Spencer: No. Chuck Atkinson: That's just an everyday power hitter kind of season. I mean, that's somebody making twenty million dollars. That that's that's nothing. Like if you are who you say you are, then thirty home runs for a power hitter is nothing. Jeremy Spencer: No, you don't expect them to hit forty seven or fifty or sixty or none of that every year, but you you gotta hit thirty, twenty five or thirty home runs. Chuck Atkinson: No, no, but you expect but you but you expect you know at least twenty five twenty five is twenty five is my Mendoza line for this guy in home run totals if you're getting paid fifty million a year or forty million, thirty million, Jeremy Spencer: yeah. Well la last year actually you only had twenty three. Chuck Atkinson: twenty five million. Jeez, you're not asking the world of this guy. Like e twenty three. Jeremy Spencer: Last year he had twenty three, eighty four RBIs. Chuck Atkinson: What do you have the year before? Jeremy Spencer: Thirty Ye Chuck Atkinson: Okay, the year before that. Jeremy Spencer: twenty six. Year bef year before that thirty two. He's consistently around Chuck Atkinson: Okay. So we're consistently around So we're consistently around Jeremy Spencer: thirty. Chuck Atkinson: twenty five to thirty home runs is the expectation then. Now let's put this in con Jeremy Spencer: You had around a hundred RBIs. Chuck Atkinson: now let's put this into context. Shoheotani's getting paid Jeremy Spencer: But the Chuck Atkinson: $700 million for a shorter term period, being paid backloaded down the road, like I said. Jeremy Spencer: Mm-hmm. Chuck Atkinson: And we're paying Vladdy 50 million. Jeremy Spencer: They tried to get Shohei. Chuck Atkinson: Right. Well, we all know what that was. It wasn't he was he was never gonna show up in Toronto. We were just used as a we were just used as a decoy Jeremy Spencer: No, no, I was bargaining chips. Chuck Atkinson: to get more money out of the Dodgers. not that they were ever concerned about him coming to Toronto. Okay, you don't go. Jeremy Spencer: But the year the Yeah. the the year that Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Vladi hit thirty two years ago in twenty four, he had a hundred and three RBIs and batted three twenty three for average though. Like so yeah, it was thirty home runs, but the guy's batting over three Chuck Atkinson: You know you you you you know how many seasons like you know how many seasons I could show you Joe Carter hitting twenty-five home runs and a hundred hundred RBIs? And nobody nobody ever thought of nobody Jeremy Spencer: Yeah well, he wasn't making Chuck Atkinson: ever thought of him as a top ten guy in baseball. Like those were just great power numbers from a guy who's doing his job. Like Jeremy Spencer: True. Chuck Atkinson: right? Like, you know, there's nothing superstar. There there wasn't anything superstar on the leak. Jeremy Spencer: Although he's he's he's legendary. He's a legendary player with the Jays. Like touch all, Joe. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, but you know what? You don't get paid for memorabilia. You get paid for production. You don't. You don't. You don't get paid for the name on the back Jeremy Spencer: Well he he was a big part Chuck Atkinson: of the jersey unless you're Wayne Gretzky. But you know. Jeremy Spencer: He was a huge part of the World Series. Chuck Atkinson: of course he was. But you know what? He wasn't getting paid. He wasn't the top paid guy on his team that year. I guarantee you that much. Jeremy Spencer: No. I don't even know who was. Who would have been. You know what it'd be sa it would be Chuck Atkinson: Well, it's hard to say back then, I don't think. they had that I mean that team there, they had David Cohn, Dave Steve, shoot, who else? Joe Carter, like you said, Paul Molliter, Gruber, Alamard, the list goes on and on and on. I mean, they're all all stars and future Hall of Famers for the most part on that team. but going back to Vladdy though, seven home runs, eight eight home runs, excuse me. I don't need fact check that 'cause I watched the game last night and tuning in a little bit later. yeah, eight home runs for fifty million dollars and we're already at what a week into September? Come on. Come on. Jeremy Spencer: highest paid the highest paid player in the nineteen ninety two World Series. Who do you think it was? Who do you think was the highest play Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: player? Both teams. Chuck Atkinson: Nine nine nineteen ninety two and that was Jeremy Spencer: Ninety two. Chuck Atkinson: both teams. Are you referring to the World Series teams? Jeremy Spencer: The world to two teams that were in the World Series, which were the Jays and the Braves. And I'll give you a Chuck Atkinson: So the and the Braves. Right. Jeremy Spencer: hint. The top out of the top five, four of Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: them were Jays. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. I'd say Dave Winfield was probably one. No. Okay. Robbie Alamar. Jeremy Spencer: Surprising. Chuck Atkinson: Robbie Alamar. Jeremy Spencer: Robbie Almayer, the second highest paid player in the nineteen ninety Chuck Atkinson: Mm. Jeremy Spencer: two World Series, three point three three three three three million. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. And the other there's four others, but three of them are Jays. If I'm gonna pick a brave, I'm gonna say Greg Maddox. Jeremy Spencer: No, that's who I would have also picked, or Tom Glavin, and it's not Tom Glavin. Chuck Atkinson: Chipper Jones? No, that would have been too soon for Chipper. Jeremy Spencer: No, that was after. Chuck Atkinson: 92 Braves. don't. Jeremy Spencer: You're not gonna get it. You're not gonna get it. I'd never have got it. Chuck Atkinson: well. Come on. 1992 Braves. Let me just give me a second here. I know Jeremy Spencer: Well that doesn't say much if I wouldn't get it. But I'm just I I don't think you'll get it. Chuck Atkinson: it's not Otis Nixon. I know it's not Otis Nixon. Jeremy Spencer: It is not Otis Nixon. Chuck Atkinson: 1992 Braves. Ooh. I'm gonna have a okay. I'll I'll give it up. I'll I'll go one last guess here and say Tom Glavin. All right, who it? Jeremy Spencer: No, remember I said it wasn't Glavin. Chuck Atkinson: I didn't hear that part, sorry. Jeremy Spencer: no. Yeah, no, not levin. Charlie Charlie Lebrandt. Chuck Atkinson: Okay, okay. Who? Jeremy Spencer: Charlie Lebrandt. Chuck Atkinson: He was not the highest paid Atlanta Brave that year. Jeremy Spencer: Highest paid Atlanta Brave that year, three point one eight three million. Chuck Atkinson: You can tear you can tell the rookies carried that team that year in Greg Maddox. Wow. I've never heard that name before. Is it was he the back what was Jeremy Spencer: Ho ho ho and then and then I'll just tell you the rest. But the highest I'll start at the bottom. Chuck Atkinson: he the was he the backup catcher? Jeremy Spencer: I don't even know. I don't even remember him playing. Chuck Atkinson: I don't know. I don't know. Who who are the other Jays that are on the list there? Jeremy Spencer: so so going from five to the to the top, fifth highest paid player in nineteen ninety two World Series, Tom Hankey, two point eight seven five million. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. The old hanks there, the old save machine. Okay. All right. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Fourth, fourth highest paid player in the nineteen ninety two World Series, Joe Carter. Three million even. cool three million. Then you got Charlie Librandt. Then you got the brave guy. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. All right. All right, so he was the third highest player on his own team. All right, so Joe was the third highest on his team. Okay. Jeremy Spencer: Joe Carter, third highest on the team that year. Chuck Atkinson: Then some Charlie some Charlie guy. Okay. Jeremy Spencer: Charlie Lee Brandt. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. Jeremy Spencer: Next, Roberto Alamar, which you you guessed. So number that's number two. Chuck Atkinson: Catch the taste. All right. Mm-hmm. Mr. McCain. Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: Highest paid player. Nineteen ninety two World Series. You wanna take a sab? It's a J. It's a blue J. Chuck Atkinson: Okay. It's a blue jay, right? It's gotta be a blue jay then. Okay. Mm. Okay. Is he a starting Okay G Jeremy Spencer: I don't know you might not get it. Well, how about this? Wanna hint? Chuck Atkinson: Okay, let me let me ask the hint. Is was he a was he a starter? Like not in the sense that he's a starting pitcher, but a starting ball player. Jeremy Spencer: Yes. One hundred percent. Hey he he's Chuck Atkinson: Okay. okay, now you did I catch you say Jeremy Spencer: memorable in the series and well in in for that for that year, but it might not be your first guess. I I don't I I almost forgot about it. Chuck Atkinson: I so badly wanna say Kelly I so badly wanna say Kelly Gruber, but it's not. Jeremy Spencer: No, not groups. Chuck Atkinson: okay, it's not Okay. Jeremy Spencer: Do you want do you want any guess? Like I can give you a hint. Chuck Atkinson: I I'm I'm trying to run down the positions right. So we got okay, so Pat Borders is not the cr was a crime dog on that team. Fred McGriff did not get paid that well then. Russ right, because it that's right. Jeremy Spencer: Fred McGriff got traded before they won the World Series, I believe. He wa he wa Chuck Atkinson: That's how we get to the pod that's right. That's how we got Alamar from the pod race. Good catch. Jeremy Spencer: Yep. Yep. Chuck Atkinson: so then our first baseman was who? Not no, George Bell is beyond gone there. Jeremy Spencer: The big fan. Well, he he he would ride a motorcycle to the game. Chuck Atkinson: David Wells. Jeremy Spencer: No, but I think he also has a motorcycle. Chuck Atkinson: He he did a lot of stuff during the Jeremy Spencer: But David Wells Chuck Atkinson: he did a lot of stuff showing up to the game or the night before game or during the game. yeah. all right. No, I'll I I pass. I tag out. Jeremy Spencer: Jack Morris, buddy. Chuck Atkinson: Mr. Mustachio. that's right. Jeremy Spencer: Jack Boris. The leathers and the Harley. Chuck Atkinson: That's right. I never that's right. He was on ninety two. He wasn't on ninety three I don't. Jeremy Spencer: Ninety two, he wasn't on the ninety three team, was he? Chuck Atkinson: No, I don't think so. Yeah, that's right. So we came from Minnesota. Jeremy Spencer: But but he was throwing the heaters. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. He was a workhorse, that guy. If you could Jeremy Spencer: He is like their max scherzer. Chuck Atkinson: Well, he was a guy that if you wanted nine innings, he could go out and pitch you nine innings. Didn't matter if it was a hangover or not. Jeremy Spencer: Back then, back then pitchers were wussies and didn't you know, nowadays you can barely get over five innings without sending paramedics out to review everything with their shoulder. Those guys, you Chuck Atkinson: Well then Jeremy Spencer: they they all pitched, they all wanted to pitch the whole game. They were all pitching seven, eight innings, nine innings most of the time. Your relievers Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Yeah. yeah. No, that's when Jeremy Spencer: came in they they had the middle reliever, which pitched, you know, the seventh, eighth. Chuck Atkinson: Well, to be fair, it baseball's changed so much, and well here's my comparison. It it's like sports nowadays, and this is every league. Maybe not so much football. yes, if every league included. Okay. Baseball, hockey, basketball, football. they all it's all included. It's all it's all this is all this is Jeremy Spencer: Well, they're their assets, they're they're getting paid so much money. Chuck Atkinson: this is all included in my in my next statement compared to what we were just talking about in Jack Morris. Players nowadays are not men when they play, they're boys. They are. I'm saying it. Jeremy Spencer: Well Chuck Atkinson: They're boys because it's they they grew up on social media. They grew up on TikTok and Facebook. Jeremy Spencer: Summer Chuck Atkinson: And now I'm saying this out loud and I'm looking at my audience Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: and I'm going, Yes, I'm talking to most of you and a lot of you. But you know what? It's a matter of fact. It it's it's what we're talking about. You're being coddled to go five innings. You can only do so much. Yeah, you it's it's so weird. It's so weird how we we we just Jeremy Spencer: You c most people had the attitude of a guy like Shir you could not you wouldn't be you would he Yeah. Imagine trying Chuck Atkinson: You don't cross You don't cross Jeremy Spencer: to take Roger Clemens out of the game in the fifth inning when he's throwing eight strikeouts Chuck Atkinson: Right. Right. Randy J Randy R Randy Johnson, Pedro, Martinez. You know, you don't go up to these guys and say, listen, you know, we're getting to the third time around in the batting order. They might know Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: you. They might know you too much. We don't believe in your pitching that all that well. But so we're gonna take you out of the game. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, y you you've got nine strikeouts, two walks and we're winning three to one. but you're at you're at a hundred and four pitches right now, so it's time the time we better s cool you off. They'd Chuck Atkinson: Right. Jeremy Spencer: no thank you very much. Those guys wouldn't do that. But the game was way different. You didn't have eighty Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. It's like load management. Jeremy Spencer: six pitchers on your roster back then. Chuck Atkinson: It's like load management in basketball. can't play back to back games. You can only play third. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Started with Kawaii. Chuck Atkinson: Can only play well, i i that was made famous with Kawaii. Made made famous, Jeremy Spencer: Kinda started with Kawhi and Uncle Rinco. Chuck Atkinson: made famous with them. Yeah, kind of started with them, but made famous by them. you know. Jeremy Spencer: Made famous by Qui Leonard and Uncle Rico. Chuck Atkinson: Now they can't play you know, back to back games. I can't play more than 30 minutes if I played 20 minutes the day before, or vice versa. Jeremy Spencer: Basketball's the worst, man. They only got five Chuck Atkinson: like button. Jeremy Spencer: guys on the team. Nobody else is matters. And they're all they're they're they all get paid so much and they all just decide where they want to play. You know, and LeBron Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: brings his talents places. It's ridiculous. Basketball, I can hardly w it I'm I don't like bad I I mean, whatever. It's basketball. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, yeah, every other year every yeah every other year every other year LeBron has an announcement where he's gonna play or where he's gonna buy his next set of underwear. It's like I'm No. Jeremy Spencer: You don't see Sidney Crosby having an announcement about him taking his talents to anywhere or just even the fact that he's planning on playing another year. Like it nobody Chuck Atkinson: Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: hears from Sydney. He just shows up and plays and he's gonna get a hundred ninety five points again this year at thirty nine years old. Chuck Atkinson: Right. Yeah. No, it Jeremy Spencer: And and he's not gonna tell us all about it. Chuck Atkinson: No, it it's it's true. And you know, there's a lot of athletes like that in in in other sports where they're you know, I I'm dedicated to one team, I I wanna stick with one team and that's great. You know, I wish more players had that mentality and had that thumbnail. Jeremy Spencer: Well even getting traded, it's I mean, even if Sydney got traded, I don't think that diminishes anything about Sydney's r legacy of anything, but it's just hockey players Chuck Atkinson: No, but it's how it's but it's how you go how you Jeremy Spencer: in general just have this different attitude than than the rest. that's what I like about hockey so much. Like th the others it's starting to, but you Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, that's starting to change. That's starting to change, buddy. Are you you starting to change? It's starting to change. And you can see it with trade requests and demands like Larkin and these other guys throughout the years. And and and now that the contracts Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Yeah, but guess guess where those to make Chuck Atkinson: now that the contracts are ballooning, now the players are starting to have more talk and more. I want this, I want that. I'm not happy here. I I'm Connor Jeremy Spencer: You the Chuck Atkinson: Hellibuck. I signed a contract two years ago for seven years, and I want Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, and I want out of it. Chuck Atkinson: out. Well listen, Bud, you know where you you know where you signed. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, but do you know what that has to do with Chuck? They or that's those are American players and they discussed all this in the Olympics. This is a this is a plan. Like Chuck Atkinson: Mm. Jeremy Spencer: Kachuk and Halibuck, they all they're all trying to join up in Florida and have a friggin' team Chuck Atkinson: Super team. Jeremy Spencer: USA reunion down there. This is a thing that they're trying to do. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Well Jeremy Spencer: They're trying to pull a LeBron James. They're trying to bring all their friends. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, let them ha let it happen. Remember the a few years ago Jeremy Spencer: Well they're try they're Chuck Atkinson: in Philadelphia with the Eagles? They they tried to make the super team and that just fell flat Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: on its face, right? Like when you try to bring all these special talents together, you think, because Jeremy Spencer: There Chuck Atkinson: I do it, it's gonna equal a championship. Well, guess what? It doesn't always happen. Yeah, unless you're the Dodgers. Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. It rarely it rarely does. Teams are team teams are made from teams. Just w keep watching what my habs are doing. They're all taking friendly team contracts to to Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Jeremy Spencer: they are. It's well known and documented. They're all they're look, they're all taking eight million dollar eight Chuck Atkinson: It's documented by RDS, T V A, QV five and in Quebec City. Jeremy Spencer: Lane Hudson signs for way more money somewhere else if he wasn't in if the situation wasn't as good as what it is right now. Demi D just came out the other day and said the same thing. I left money on the table so that we could Chuck Atkinson: They didn't Jeremy Spencer: all sign these big deals. They're making big, huge bucks. Chuck Atkinson: Then their ag their agent didn't do them any favors because they didn't tell them, Hey, you're gonna be living in Quebec, you're Jeremy Spencer: Actually Chuck Atkinson: gonna be playing more paying more taxes than anywhere else you play play. you Jeremy Spencer: Their a their agent their is a he's had his agent try to talk out of it. So the the they want they are having Chuck Atkinson: Well he's a start. Jeremy Spencer: fun, man. No, but they're having fun. They can see a team being built and they're that's what's happening. You know, Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, no, I get it. I get it. Jeremy Spencer: going going and demanding seventeen million dollars and trying to build a hockey team of these fucking guys that like they're getting like who who just got that? Leo Carlson? Like Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, like I don't know who this guy is. I mean I know who I I Jeremy Spencer: Celebrini? Chuck Atkinson: know who he is. I I mean I get that and I get his stats, but Jeremy Spencer: These guys just made themselves big bucks, and I don't blame them for doing that, but that is not gonna be a winning formula to win any Stanley Cops. Chuck Atkinson: No, not not in hockey, it's not. Because of the size of the rosters they Jeremy Spencer: Not called. Chuck Atkinson: have to build. The size of the roster, first of all, is it's it's huge. And and the cap right now is not can Jeremy Spencer: No. No. So Chuck Atkinson: conducive to that number. Jeremy Spencer: So going back to what we were talking about with the Jays and them having fun, this is how hockey teams are gonna have to fucking excuse my French, but that's how they're going to have to build their teams. They're gonna have to build a great atmosphere, a great facility, a great Chuck Atkinson: Right. Jeremy Spencer: everything for the players. So that the players, when they're there, they're like, We like this. I like my teammates. We got a good thing going. Let's, let's like, they they're not gonna allow the team to spend under the cap. Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, but baseball is Jeremy Spencer: Course that's not that's not the point of it. The team's gonna spend right through the roof to the much as they can, but it's gonna be spent to Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, but baseball's different though. Jeremy Spencer: make a whole team. Chuck Atkinson: Baseball's different. You can keep smiles on faces be a lot easier because A, there's no cap. As soon as the cap happens, that that camaraderie that we're talking about with the Jays is not gonna be as easy to come by and easy to build. But it starts with, you know, the the internal workings of the foundation, really, and the franchise, and then it grows outward from there. 'Cause if you have a strong foundation, a a strong front front office, training facilities in the off season, during the season, rehab facilities, Jeremy Spencer: Look at Chuck Atkinson: then you're gonna have happy players who are happy to go to work, be around these people every day. 'cause let's Jeremy Spencer: Look at the Tampa Bay Lightning. Chuck Atkinson: Balbarum. Jeremy Spencer: Like they did they got guys getting paid big bucks. Chuck Atkinson: Mm. Jeremy Spencer: They're a core of guys and they somehow keep moving a couple of guys out here, adding a couple guys in. Like they've moved out big like Calorne, they've moved out big parts of their Chuck Atkinson: yeah. Jeremy Spencer: winning teams and winning formula, but kept kept the core nucleus Chuck Atkinson: They're big four essentially. Jeremy Spencer: of those players together and just were able to to to remain very good for eight plus years. Like and and the red red wings did it years Chuck Atkinson: Well, yeah, and and that's the the winning formula you need to have. Jeremy Spencer: ago. Like Chuck Atkinson: Yeah, it it it was in in part, you know, we got the start when there was no salary cap at that time when we won those Stanley Cups. Right. So we transitioned to it. We Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, but it's still it re it's it's like you you kept you had a core. Chuck Atkinson: Right. And we transitioned into it because we had Jeremy Spencer: And it's Chuck Atkinson: great players from that initial core of pre salary cap. Once the salary cap came into play. That's when guys like Robotai, Hull, who we had on, you know, for a cup of coffee years at the end so they can get their Stanley Cups and hang on. not just hang on, but you know, succeed because they were still awesome players. But, you know, those guys there Jeremy Spencer: Well players but what why what made it successful though is that players wanted to go there during those years. Like halls, all those guys were all landing there because they're like, Yeah, man, we this is a great thing. Chuck Atkinson: Well, yeah. Yeah, but because we didn't have but we didn't have a cap then when those guys were showing up. But when the cap came into play, we had already drafted the guys like Datsuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, McCarthy, you know, Osgood. So we had a younger core ready to take us to the next era once those older veterans and all those Hall of Famers were retiring and leaving us. And then, you know, you grow from there. Right. So we had that transition. Jeremy Spencer: And y you had you had to have that. You had to have that so you could bring veterans in and pay them and have these guys making a little bit less money and being and and and being great at the same time, which allowed to make a team. It's Chuck Atkinson: Right. Which is why, you know, teams like Colorado were able to transition through that era as well. you know, back in the late nineties, early two thousands, they had their Hall of Famers who they acquired, you know, in the mid nineties and stuff like that. Great teams. Then when the cap came in, they kept on flourishing for years afterwards, right? So, yeah, Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: you know, different times, different eras, but yeah, so it's Yeah, we'll see we'll see what happens Jeremy Spencer: Yeah. Chuck Atkinson: next. But you know, like I said, the Jays, you know, hopefully they'll make the playoffs. But in the me in the immediate it's football season and it starts tomorrow night. It starts tomorrow night. And Jeremy Spencer: Yeah, buddy. So so so that being said. This is gonna be this is this is the end of podcast one. Let's face it. We're we're done. We're rambling on at this point. But guess what's coming? Guess what's coming? The Chuck Atkinson: Yeah. Yep. Fifty one minutes. Yep. Episode two. Jeremy Spencer: the episode two. Episode two's coming. And Chuck Atkinson: Episode two. Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: this is gonna be the the twenty twenty six Riverview Fantasy Football League in review, buddy. And and Chuck Atkinson: That's right. Jeremy Spencer: and just as I I I had mentioned, I mean it's gonna be centered around. The flea bastards and and and Chuck Atkinson: The X factor. Jeremy Spencer: how this is the year of the fleas. The fleas the fleas are taking this. Not not only this thing, I got there's another league. We'll talk about that too, but it's the year of the fleas all around. Chuck Atkinson: Listen, if you don't believe, you can't achieve. Mm-hmm. Jeremy Spencer: Well, I just like it's kind of like one of those, you know, isn't it what do they say? you have to Chuck Atkinson: If you don't believe, you can't achieve, right? What's that? Jeremy Spencer: Think it for it to happen. If you d if you do not believe, you cannot achieve. Chuck Atkinson: That's right. That's right. So y you gotta start with a belief that you can do it. 'Cause if you can't believe after you walk out of the draft room with what you have, then well, I wanna play you on Sunday, spot that way. I've already beaten you. Jeremy Spencer: I I like my name. See how I accidentally opened the waiver wire up and guys are trying to add and drop guys before even the guy played. It's like I I I won't do that. I can't draft a guy and then drop drop him before I even see the day of light because doesn't make sense. Yeah, I saw. I saw you did. Well you cause you Chuck Atkinson: I did. I did. Jeremy Spencer: drafted by you screwed bye weeks up. You were fixing bye weeks. Well anyway, we're gonna talk about this in episode part Chuck Atkinson: That's right. We're gonna cover the football, the fantasy football, and more. So I hope you guys enjoy. Jeremy Spencer: So this is yeah. So big G Chuck Atkinson: And yeah. Jeremy Spencer: signing off. Chuck Atkinson: All right. See you bass out. Jeremy Spencer: Over and out. Chuck Atkinson: All right. See ya folks next time. Jeremy Spencer: Cheers.
