- 1:13We got our brother DJ Aggravated in the building.
- 1:18Know what I'm saying? Aggravated. What's up, bro?
- 1:20The legendary hitters in the building. Let's go, baby. Houston in the house. Y'all already know. Let me tell you one thing about Aggravated.
- 1:27Every time I touch down and I have a big gig or a little gig, it don't matter, he pulls up. And he makes sure good. I'm a pull up. Make sure I'm good in Houston. He wants to go out to eat. Are you good? Nah.
- 1:38Yo. I gotta go get some rest. I'll be always like, I gotta get some rest, Ag. But I I I love that boy.
- 1:44Yeah. Yeah, man. I just said, it's just one of them them southern hospitality things, man.
- 1:48Just wanna make sure you're good in the city. That's all. And make sure you don't go to the wrong places.
- 1:53That's it. There they are. That's it right there. Y'all show love when I come to New York, so I gotta show love when you come to Houston. That's it. That's for sure.
- 2:01Yo. So so Ag, you know, how we do here each and every week. We're gonna dig in from the beginning, and we're gonna get as far as we can to where we at right now. You know what I'm saying? So, like Work. I guess we could... That's where we could start.
- 2:13Right? Wait. You know, why we why don't we do this? What? What's the first vinyl or record you ever bought in a store?
- 2:19Wow.
- 2:20That's that's... That goes back far, bro.
- 2:24Like... That's that's that's the solo... You gotta remember the first piece of, like...
- 2:29I mean, it was my hags. You bought it with your own money.
- 2:32Yeah.
- 2:33I was like... I don't know. It was like, oh my gosh.
- 2:37I don't... I I think I was like in the third grade, like, at one of those little book fairs or something. I bought I bought like a bunch... I had like a bunch of just a... I didn't... I wouldn't try to be a DJ. I just bought some records. I don't I don't know.
- 2:50I was just... My dad was into music a lot, so I just was trying to copy him and I just bought some record. I can't really tell you, but I can tell you the first record that I know that I really was like, hey. I'm a buy that Kurtis Blow.
- 3:05Breaks? The Breaks. Wow. Yeah.
- 3:08Wow. The disco version, the long version. Yeah.
- 3:12We owe on the Breaks. Bring it up.
- 3:14Bring it up. Bring it up. Because they heard it on the radio so much that you was like, oh, I gotta have that.
- 3:18You know what I'm saying? And I just remembered selling my pops. I said, my mom and my pops, I gotta have that record.
- 3:24Well well, with that being said, what got you into into DJing? I mean, let me let me just tell you when I started.
- 3:29I started in 1985.
- 3:30That's a long time ago. That's some time.
- 3:32So that was... I was, like, in the eighth grade. But before that, like, the sixth and seventh grade, in my neighborhood, we were running around breakdancing, you know, trying to be, you know, b-boys and stuff. And then and then at some point in my neighborhood, you know, the crack era was pretty pretty dominant, and I was playing basketball.
- 3:50And so my pops was like... I said, hey. I wanna... I think I wanna, you know, DJ.
- 3:55So he basically is like, alright. Cool.
- 3:58This will be something else he can do that he won't get in any trouble around in the neighborhood. You know what saying?
- 4:03He's he's gonna play basketball. He's play basketball, go to practice, and he gonna come home and do this music. And that's what I did. But Good.
- 4:10He started me out doing that. I think my first party was my my sisters at at my church. My sisters, she was raising money to... For the church to be the, like, the queen or whatever.
- 4:22And my mama was like, I'm not hiring no DJ. This boy been in here DJing all this time. He gonna he gonna get...
- 4:27He gonna do it.
- 4:28And all I I... All I had all I had was some records and a tape deck.
- 4:33And... So I have a question.
- 4:34So I I have a question because, I mean, I don't know if we've had anybody that said that this early was DJing.
- 4:41So especially in... Especially, you know, your experience in Houston is completely different than our experience up here in New York in the East Coast. So, like, at that time, when you first started DJing, like, were you inspired by what you were seeing on TV or hearing from the hip hop?
- 4:55Do... Oh, was there DJs already in your neighborhood doing it?
- 4:59Yeah. So a couple of things. So B Street played a big part of my life because, you know, I Classic.
- 5:05I really thought that movie was like every...
- 5:07I I thought everything in Beat Street was everything y'all was doing up in in New York.
- 5:12Yo. That was yo. That was Kast's background.
- 5:14Everything in in in in... Everything in B Street was Kast's neighborhood.
- 5:17Hello?
- 5:18I I remember the first time I got off the subway, me and my boy Blast was in subway. We got off and we...
- 5:24And I forgot what record was with us.
- 5:26We was walking around. We start walking. He said, what are y'all doing? We're doing battle cry. Well, we're gonna start dancing right here.
- 5:32So Beat Street played a big part of it, but... You said battle cry? Back to cry.
- 5:37Wait. This is on a trip to New York? Like, a trip to New York, you got...
- 5:41Jumped out there.
- 5:43But back to it.
- 5:46Just just... There was a DJ here in Houston by the name of Chilly Bill Smith.
- 5:51He was on the radio.
- 5:53And... No. It wasn't on the radio. He was he was in the neighborhood. I I graduated from Jack Yates, the School of Communications.
- 5:58He was already there. I wasn't in high school yet. But he lived in the neighborhood.
- 6:03So I would ride my bike to his house, knock on his door, and ask his mom, hey. Is Bill from the DJ?
- 6:11He'll come to the door. Hey, man. I'm a make a tape in about two hours.
- 6:14Go back home, come back. He'd be in the garage DJing, and I would just come and I would watch. And I would watch, and then... Like, he had he had Technics.
- 6:24My dad was like, man, I ain't got no money for that. You know, we're get you these belt drives, and we do belt drives. And that's what you're gonna get. But I learned how to DJ on the Belt Drive, and and and it was just like, my dad literally took the garage and made it, like, my room, my DJ room.
- 6:41I put my bed in there. All I had was a ceiling fan.
- 6:44And That's fine. It gets it gets hot in Houston. Ceiling fan, another fan. He put a desk in there, and he built me, like, what would be considered a DJ, you know... Man cave, bro. Yeah. Yeah. So... And and and he had... My dad built me my first speakers. That's what's Like, really built... Like, was also... He was one of them dudes like, I'll fit. I'll I'll build that. And really really quick for the young... Because we have a lot of DJs, a lot of younger DJs that also watch the podcast for them.
- 7:11Just to give you some clarity because they don't probably know what belt drive even means.
- 7:15Right? So the Technics, like, when you see even... It might it might even know Technics.
- 7:19So Technics have a motor in it that just kinda like... It drives the turntable. Now the belt one is just how you would think. It was like a rubber belt that broke around it. So, like, when you touch the turntable It was... That joint was, like, two seconds before.
- 7:33Yeah. It was like... Had, like, a two, three second delay. They were terrible.
- 7:52It wouldn't even go that high or low.
- 7:53Was just like the same shit.
- 7:55Negative. So I took those little plastic things that were in the record. I took, like, a bunch of them, cut them out. Right?
- 8:01Cut them out, and then put... Then cut out Slipmat. Oh. Slipmat. And look at... And made my own slipmat. Right?
- 8:06Because that slipmat... That was the hip hop way.
- 8:09That was the... Then it was d... It was DJing on a budget because now...
- 8:13If you had Technics... If you had something like Technics, you would either... You had money, your family was rich, or you was good.
- 8:19Yeah. I don't know... I only knew one person that had Technics in my whole neighborhood, bro. Like No. I remember working an entire summer at a fucking supermarket just to get my Technics. Man. The whole summer. I worked the whole summer I worked the whole summer at a hat store selling hats. Yeah. Dude kept my Technics. My pops was like my pops was like, hey. The the the... And then and then listen. This is how cold it was.
- 8:41Not only that, I was like, yo, I need these Technics speakers. I mean, turntables. And tell... And I need and I need them with a suitcase. And he was like, what the hell is a suitcase? I didn't know the Anvil case, you know, I just called it the suitcase.
- 8:53Suitcase. Yeah. I didn't know. I was like, I need the the turntable suitcase too. So there's a store... There was a store here called Evans Music City.
- 9:02And he went over there and he priced it. He said, oh, no, brother. We can't we can't get through there. You're gonna to...
- 9:07You're gonna have to you're gonna have to save up and get you some up because because because they were they were hella expensive in there.
- 9:13Hella expensive. I'm a tell you one thing though. One thing about Technics, damn shits last forever. Yes. You get your money's worth. Yo. I'm a show y'all I'm a show y'all something. This will have my first ones. Oh, these are my first ones.
- 9:26These are my first ones. I got it redone, but these are my first one. These shits are 40 years old. I only I only ever had... I've only had two I've only had two pair in my entire time. Two pair. I've only one last time. I still have the same pair, bro. Like, it's it's...
- 9:41Like, you definitely get your money, but that's German... Other than German technology because that shit I don't know. That shit still last, bro.
- 9:46Yeah. Yeah. The best, bro.
- 9:49Anyway, back to back to the story. Your dad build the speakers for you.
- 9:53I go out.
- 9:55I I I do parties. You know, I'm doing hip hop parties. I'm I'm really doing hip hop parties. Like, just doing. It took me a little minute because I'm just doing parties around the way in the hood, you know, just little parties here and there. And I'm I'm literally working, like, in the summertime, I would go work for a gentleman in, like, construction and, like, tearing down stuff. And that was my little money. And I get my little money, and I would literally take...
- 10:21Like, let's just say in in 80 something, I'm getting 300, $400 a week.
- 10:26I would take my 100 and go buy some, you know, Guess jeans, try to look fly, know, got me a little shirt, and the rest, I would go and get records. Yep. I would just go just go...
- 10:39And, you know, and it's something when you would go to this... When you would go and the records were, like, $5. People don't understand, like, the records were, like, 5. So now you're in the store. I'm a tell y'all a quick story. There's a story there's a store called Soundwaves. Right?
- 10:51That's what my... It was so far from...
- 10:53Not far, but it was by the airport.
- 10:55My mom was, like, on a Saturday, she's like, I'm not I'm I'm not gonna wait here because you're gonna be in that store all day. I'm a drop you off and come back and get you. So she would drop me off. I would be in the store shopping, shopping, shopping. Right? Is that where Premier worked?
- 11:08Yes.
- 11:09So Premier was there. Premier would walk in, him and the guy... Another guy...... The producer, DJ... DJ Premier. Wow.
- 11:17DJ Premier. You know, that was a good call out. I didn't even know that. You know, it's like, he worked there. I knew that. Yeah. Yeah. DJ Premier worked in Houston.
- 11:23And so you had your little records. Right?
- 11:26And he... Him and Carlos was there, and they would walk in. And then, you know, you you buy your stuff, and he'll come in with some new stuff, and they'll pop it on it. And you... And they had the little DJ booth up, and he playing the stuff. And you're like, yo, what's that?
- 11:37Yo, what's that? So now you're looking at your little stack like, yeah.
- 11:41I ain't got... I I can't get two of them. I can't get two of them.
- 11:44I'm a put that back. What was that?
- 11:46Okay. Let me get that brand. So you try to get... And it... And and in Houston, it took a long time for music to get down here. So when we got it, you was like, I gotta have it.
- 11:54You know what I'm saying? So... Yeah. Alright.
- 11:56So I have a question.
- 11:57Oh, good. Okay. No. Go ahead. Ahead. Enuff.
- 11:59Go ahead. Go ahead.
- 12:00This is 1985.
- 12:02No. No. No. This is later. So so 85. So it's like... Yeah. It's like 8586 now. 858687.
- 12:09Yeah. I'm a I'm a big DJ in New York.
- 12:12Mhmm. I know a lot about history, but I have no clue what's playing in Houston in '19... There we go. 8687.
- 12:18What's playing? Geto Boys. So if it was rap, it was Geto Boys, but it was...
- 12:22So you gotta understand it wasn't a it wasn't a lot of hip hop stuff here.
- 12:26You know what saying? We have the radio station. The radio station, I'm not right now.
- 12:29But... You tell me all the music. I don't I don't care if it was club.
- 12:32Yeah. Damn. For example, you know, I'm sure that at some point, it was mostly...
- 12:37I don't know. Like, was that... Like, when it first started, was it mostly dominated by, like, you know, the popular areas that hip hop was coming from, like the East Coast or the West Coast? At what point did Houston start having their own thing where you had to be like, oh, I gotta buy Houston records too. No. No. Or was that almost from the beginning? No. So Rap A Lot had their stuff here in the, you know, the first to get awards and stuff.
- 12:57But, you you know, they only played in the clubs and it and it wasn't a bunch of clubs. It was just a few small clubs here in Houston that was, you know, that allowed that music. But for the most part, it was "Rapper's Delight," Kurtis Blow, because, you know, heard it on the radio. But after that, it's just regular music, you know. That's... And that's how I learned about the other music because it was just regular R&B on the radio.
- 13:19Because they didn't they didn't they didn't have all that other stuff. But that was it back in the day, but... Yeah. But Rap-A-Lot grew and, you know, I can remember trying to follow them around Houston because, know, there was no pages, there was no nothing.
- 13:31You just heard, oh, there... Somebody's gonna be over here at this place, at this park.
- 13:35And you would go there and then you just hang out. You know what saying? Trying to be part of the scene. That is...
- 13:40So when was when was the first real gig? Like, the gig, like, I don't know, nightclub or slash big ass party? So there was no there was no clubs here in Houston for for for...
- 13:52Like, are now. Like, we got a thousand clubs now. There was... You guys run the...
- 13:55You you guys run the country now. Now everybody's like, Houston still parties. Yeah. You know?
- 13:59So there was the... It wasn't like that.
- 14:01It was all... And it was all upscale, you know, white and black clubs. So I would say, like, party scene. The party scene...
- 14:10I mean, mean, the party scene, like like, there were people that threw parties for people from high school. Right? There was a crew...
- 14:17There was a gentleman under Victor Bass. So I used to roll with him too, and he would do all these parties.
- 14:23And he had a DJ crew. So I just kinda same thing on my way into the crew, and then hit a couple of older gentlemen, and Chilly Bill Smith was a part of that as well. And so I...
- 14:34They was like, oh, he say, this little young one's still around. He's still around. And I'm like, yeah. And I'm... I've been practicing because every time he's... He... I would go look at his stuff, I would come home and literally, like, okay. He did this. He did this. I did my... I learned how to do my transitions first.
- 14:48And then at some point, I thought I was gonna be a turntablist. And then let me tell you that.
- 14:53Yeah. You're doing tricks. You're doing tricks and all that. Yo. Don't don't we think we all gonna do that?
- 14:59Like, you think you're gonna do that. I I remember one time I was at a party, and I'm just doing it, and I'm doing it. Everybody turned around like the hell is wrong with this guy? Play the song.
- 15:09Yeah. Right. Play the... Like, think I think I think back then being a DJ, it was just part of the program. You had to, you know Yeah. Did you thought you thought it was... Yeah. That's right. If I knew now, I'd be like, yo. Just just concentrate on great mixing and crowd control. That's it. Yeah. I remember I remember joining a DJ competition in in Sheepshead, Brooklyn. And, you know, I just went up there and did my audio audio too. I was doing a routine. Yeah.
- 15:35Yeah. Yeah. But that shit was in me.
- 15:37That... Like like... You know? And I thought, you know, oh, shit. This is the way we're going. You know what I'm saying? But I think I think that's part of hip hop, man. And and that... It's like boot camp, man. Just like... That's part of the...
- 15:46You have to do it. Mhmm.
- 15:48You know what I'm saying? It's just a part of that. But but my first gig was probably one of those... If I can remember, it was just one of those high school parties where you would just really... And I tell you this. I was... The first time I ever talked on the mic, I was very... I was extremely tear... I cussed the crowd out.
- 16:03I was like, every word came out of my mother mother this and mother that, and I had a... And and get the fuck...
- 16:09And so one of the dudes in group, hey. He grabbed him, hey. Hey. Hey. Hey.
- 16:12You can't touch the microphone. I said, are talking about? I had the crowd. He said, no. You didn't. He was cussing... He was talking at them. You weren't talking to them.
- 16:20And I was like, oh.
- 16:21So then that's... That... And that was one of the things when I had to sit back and start looking and learning. Right? Yeah. So after that, you know... And it wasn't a... Again, it wasn't a lot of parties to go... I mean, clubs. We had to go to parties. So you would just go to parties, watch other DJs on how they do stuff, and then he was like, okay. I'm a take a little piece of this, and I'm a take a little bit of that, and then I'm a do this. With that being said, in high school, I went to a private high school. Right? It was a all white school. Right?
- 16:48And I remember doing... The the the class president, cool guy. He drove a Rolls-Royce to high school Nice. With Ray Bans. He took his class picture with with with his shirt and a polo. So he's like, hey, bro. He's like, hey, bro. I want you to I want you to do the party, man. I said, hey, man. I don't have I don't have that music. I got hip hop. No worries. We're gonna get you all the... And they came up there with all the records, man. I just remember playing. Like, I had no clue of... You know, other And then what were you playing? I was playing, like, all this stuff that was on MTV.
- 17:26And it was... All that. Anyway, ail Smith and... You you spin me round round all that. And I didn't...
- 17:34I'm a... But you was playing Taylor Dayne, Black Box Everything, bro. And I was like...
- 17:38C+C Music Factory. Had all their records, and I would... They would come up, Hey. Do you have such and such? Can you find it over there? Because I But you see that? That right there is a testament to, like, if you're a DJ and you could DJ, you could play anything, bro. You just got...
- 17:54You don't have somebody to be like, yo.
- 17:56This is the song I need to hear.
- 17:57You you could put it on it. You know what I'm saying?
- 18:00And I could play it right. It don't matter what it is. That's for how much did you get paid for that first gig, bro? Well, that that gig was about... It was about $300.
- 18:08$300 in the eighties. You know? Sounds good money back then. Right? Back then. Same for me, bro. I know I know people get paid $300 right now.
- 18:16Yo. It's crazy.
- 18:18That is. That is. That is. That's why the game's fucked up, Camilo. Yeah.
- 18:22You know? But the... And the $8,300, shit.
- 18:26And look. So I can tell you that, folks. So I kept telling my dad I'm do hip hop hip hop forever, and he said, hey, man. You need to do a wedding reception. Man, I said, I ain't doing no wedding reception. You crazy. I'm not doing a wedding reception.
- 18:38So I took some... I I got a wedding reception. I took some of my dad records. He's he's into music. So I took his music. Right?
- 18:46And I go do the wedding reception. I barely make it through the wedding reception because I was underprepared.
- 18:53Like, I had nothing they was asking. I was like, oh, I got this. I got that. I ain't got all that.
- 18:58I got that check, and that check was big. The next day, I tell I tell my pops. I said, I ain't lying to y'all. This is what I said. Hey, man.
- 19:07I need to go cash this check, and you need to take me to every record store in Houston because I need to buy records.
- 19:14That... I... Not the hip hop record store.
- 19:17We need to go to every record store.
- 19:19I need all the...
- 19:21All records?
- 19:22All the soul... I need everything Motown.
- 19:24I need everything Earth, Wind & Fire. I need every... I need all the stuff that I play that they were asking for. Al Green, all this. So I need all that.
- 19:32Because so when I go to a wedding...
- 19:34Now I I mean, let me tell you.
- 19:36I used to pull up to a wedding reception with 12 crates.
- 19:40Nice.
- 19:40Because I didn't know what I was gonna play. Okay, Kid Capri.
- 19:44You never knew which... You never knew you're gonna get, but I I was making sure that I was always prepared when I went to them joints because I wanted to be I wanted to be that guy. You know?
- 19:53I wanted to be like, I didn't want I didn't want no bad name on my on my own coming back to me, you know. And I was just... This is one of them things. Even when I got to the radio station, was doing...
- 20:03Instead of doing all the... There was no clubs to do. But wait. But wait. How'd you get to the radio station? Like, let's not skip over that. Oh. You you... Yeah.
- 20:12Yeah. Facts. Let's not skip over that. You know what saying? So how would the radio thing start for you?
- 20:17Hold on. Hold on. Was that was that your goal? Did you wanna do radio? So here's the thing. So at at the school I graduated from was Jack Yates Senior High.
- 20:26Right? They had a magnet program, which was communications.
- 20:30So it was radio and TV.
- 20:32Radio TV, newspaper, all that kind of stuff. Right? So mine was radio TV.
- 20:38So I had a show on on the radio. They had a radio station there. I had a show. And so, yeah, I I I was like, I could be on the radio one day. And Chilly Bill Smith actually was on the radio. The guy who I...
- 20:50Who was one of my mentors. Right? Was on the radio station.
- 20:53And so I got to the radio. I mean, I was at...
- 20:56I... It was too easy for me, you know, because I could just do, you know, you know, k l y n. And and when I... When we would when we would play, it would only play in the counselor's suite and in the cafeteria.
- 21:10Right? Okay. So it's interior. Interior of the school, the radio station. Yeah. That's it. So, you know, we do that.
- 21:18I do radio for that.
- 21:20Leave and get ready to go to college.
- 21:21I went to Prairie View one year for a semester... Not a year, a semester because there was too much going on. That's the same... That was the same year that was the same... The... My my freshman year getting there was the same year that DJ Premier was DJing his last homecoming.
- 21:41He DJed the last homecoming. And so it was like, you know, I, you know, I walked up to him like, yo, you remember me? He's like, yeah. Yeah. You know, you're like, you give me one of them. Yeah.
- 21:48Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm like...
- 21:50But I have fun. But but from there, I kept hanging up. Every time the radio station was having something, I just kinda went there, went there, went there, hung out with them. And then eventually, when I got to TSU... Because I broke my leg and had to come back home. When I got to TSU, here at the radio station, there was a guy by the name of Jimmy Olsen. He was leaving one station coming to another station.
- 22:14I was in a group called the Convicts with Big Mike and 3-2. You know who Big Mike is. Right? Mm-mm. Yeah. Big Mike. Mike and 3-2, R.I.P. 3-2. So I...
- 22:25They were on Rap-A-Lot Records. I was their DJ. That's how I got the name DJ Aggravated because they were trying to call me DJ. They were trying to call me Aggravated Assault.
- 22:32Damn.
- 22:34Damn. Yeah. Yo. Camilo hit a bomb on that one. Damn. Oh, boy.... Good name, bro. That's a bad name.
- 22:44You can't market that. You had no you had no PR at that time.
- 22:49Yeah. Big Mike Big Mike say, yo. That's too long. That's... That that name is too long. Like, you just gonna be called Aggravated. You like that? I'm like, yeah. That's pretty cool. So you got... You gotta you gotta really be aggravated. I'm like, what you mean?
- 23:03No. No. I ain't got no hair right now. Right? So back then, had... You know, you cut your hair. They was like, yo.
- 23:09Yeah. That dude's... I was like He's on it now. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, no.
- 23:13I I got... I'm a rock this flat top. I can't do that, boss. Rock this flat top. But, again, I was on...
- 23:20I was with... I was in the rap group. The radio state... He was leaving from one radio station coming to another.
- 23:26And he was like... He said, hey.
- 23:28I I think I can get you in as a mixer when I move. Because he he literally started... When he came to Magic 102 from ninety seven... It was it was it was 97.9. He was working for 97.9, and the competitor was 102.
- 23:41He left 97.9, came to 102, and 102 turned to 102 Jams. And not only that, he he had... He turned an AM station into 1590 Raps, 24-hour rap.
- 23:54What year was that? Man, that's Was was that the first was was that the first twenty four hour rap station in Houston? That... Yes.
- 24:02Yes. Okay. Had to be like...
- 24:04Three, 94, ninety ninety... Somewhere in, like, there.
- 24:07And then he left, I came over there, and I was one of the first DJs that it was me, another guy, the head... The DJ for Geto Boys right now, Domination.
- 24:19Damn. I can't think of my boy name.
- 24:22He had a song on Rap-A-Lot.
- 24:23I know how to play them. I know how to catch or slip them. But he was he was a DJ as well, and they needed DJs for the 24-hour station. So you would... We literally would play on that station all day long, like an eight hour shift mixing. Wow. Wow.
- 24:37They took... They were still developing, so they had to find out jocks, you know, and they had the jocks. And then then at some point on Friday and Saturday, they would switch over, and you could listen to both station at the same time.
- 24:49Right? 1590 Raps a minute on one or two jams. So I got in through that era, right, in '93. But then not only that, when I got in, I was like, yo. I need to get in a little more. Right? Because I was like, I I I I need I need to I need to get... I I I lived at the radio station. You couldn't you couldn't... I I didn't leave the radio station.
- 25:11Like, when I came up here, all day, I didn't wanna go home.
- 25:16So my... So so let let... What were you... That was, like, '94, '95. What were you playing back then? Oh, I... Oh. I'm I'm assuming it was a lot of East Coast back then. Right? Yeah. East Coast or West Coast? East Coast or West Coast? Like, anything from anything from the South, we were playing... We were playing, like...
- 25:32Rap-A-Lot had a whole rollout. They had a bunch So of we played a bunch of Rap-A-Lot.
- 25:38So we would repping Houston, and, you know, all the hip hop that came from the West Coast and the East Coast, especially East Coast. Let's... East Coast had a big turnout down here because, you know, the boom bap and all that. You have... Mid nineties was like heavy.
- 25:54Yeah. Little small pockets where Right. People would have the little clubs and you going in.
- 25:59It's all...
- 26:01All you see is guys with backpacks and and and trees in their mouth and then...
- 26:05And they out there, you know, you're like, yo.
- 26:10But you had to you had to, in some way, build your own identity because then you was, you know, feeding music from a...
- 26:14What what was... Was it the rap a lot situation, helping it out mostly? Yeah. That...
- 26:18You know, I was I was repping that for for a big time. Life is one of the things, like, I've never... Forget Big Chief was like, hey. You gotta make sheep. I'm like, hey. I got y'all. You know, I'm playing I'm playing the rap a lot of stuff, I'm playing the music... Other music too. You know, we play... We played everything, basically.
- 26:34The mixshow was very tight. You know?
- 26:36You couldn't play... You couldn't you couldn't move outside the parameters, you know. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Right? You at... They at least told you the guidelines of what nine... Yeah.
- 26:45And so we was on 102 Jams going against 97.9. 97.9 had a list. We didn't have a list. They basically... I would it was... You know, 97.9, The Box? Yeah.
- 26:55We were going against each other. One zero two jams. So I can remember... I also got into promotions.
- 27:04So that's how I was like, I'm like, I'm... Y'all not gonna... I'm done. In case they let go of the mixshow, I'm a be in I'm a be in promotion too. Right? Right. My man.
- 27:13Yeah. So I'm like, I'm pivoting, like... So I'm in promotions. I'm... So now I gotta be here every day.
- 27:18So I'm here every day, and I'm on air. Right? So I'm on air on the weekend. So... On the weekend. So quick story.
- 27:27I'm on air. Well, I'm on I'm on the radio station. I'm here at promotions.
- 27:32One day, a guy... One of the DJs,
- 27:3405: 00 traffic, he said, you know what? I quit.
- 27:3805: Walked out. They walked in... Three d walked in. Hey. Aggravated, we need you to get here mixed. I said, woah.
- 27:4505: Woah.
- 27:4705: Woah.
- 27:49This 05: 00 traffic, like,
- 27:51you you you... That 05: 00 traffic jam is like, you hits hits hits hits...
- 27:58you you you... That 05: I got rap.
- 28:00you you you... That 05: I got rap.
- 28:02you you you... That 05: If you wanna rap, I got all that.
- 28:04you you you... That 05: You could only play may... Maybe two rap songs
- 28:08in that in that 05: 00 hour. Two.
- 28:10in that in that 05: Shit. Two. Right. The biggest songs. So you playing old R&B songs, and I'm sitting there like, man, I'm naked.
- 28:17in that in that 05: I don't know if I'm naked.
- 28:19in that in that 05: So he goes in there. He had he had his his office. He just start pulling records, pulling records, and I'm like, yeah. We're put up. I'm like, I'm like, this don't go together? These two songs don't go together.
- 28:28in that in that 05: Like, I... He want me to do this.
- 28:30in that in that 05: Like Yeah. Figure it out. And so luckily, the other guy, he... When he left, he left his records. I said, you're gonna be mad at me because I'm finna... Look. I I gotta get through this mix.
- 28:40in that in that 05: So I pulled up his stuff. I pulled up my stuff, and I was like... And he was like, only...
- 28:45in that in that 05: The program director standing up, only two.
- 28:48in that in that 05: Only two.
- 28:49in that in that 05: I remember just playing all that r and b.
- 28:53in that in that 05: I I got through it because I knew what it was when I played that r and b. But just being there,
- 28:5805: 00, figuring it out on the fly.
- 29:0105: Figuring it out.
- 29:0305: Literally.
- 29:0405: I'm in a whole another office. He walks in and say, hey. I need you to come mix.
- 29:0705: Bro, I don't know. Don't know if I'm gonna be able to do that. You know?
- 29:1005: Because listening to that guy, I was like...
- 29:1105: Every time he would play, I was like, yeah. I need that. Yep. I need that.
- 29:1605: But he'd be like, mhmm. I don't even know. What what is that? I need that too. You know? Because I was a a hip hop head. Right? So Yeah. You know, you try to get the R&B stuff and the clubs I was... I mean, the parties and stuff I was playing, they didn't they didn't require that. You know what saying? They was wanting hip hop. But... Yeah.
- 29:3105: And it wasn't... And it's not like today, guys, where you could just go and go to Apple Music and download it or go to YouTube and download it and go buy the MP3. Like, if you didn't have if you didn't have the actual Yes.
- 29:4105: Record of it, he was a rat. Finished.
- 29:4405: He was done. Yeah. He was a rat.
- 29:4505: That's why it's always so interesting when you go into these rooms, whatever, back then when you had to carry records around because you had a limited amount of things you could bring with you. And if you wasn't prepared for it, Whatever you brought, that's it. This is what you're gonna get.
- 29:5805: That's it. I mean, I remember I remember doing them of records, I would hate when somebody would hear something. Like, somebody would drop something on the radio. Hey. Here's the brand new blah blah blah blah. And you get to this... You get to the club at the park. Hey.
- 30:1205: You got that brand new? What's... I ain't got that. Don't got it. No. I don't got that.
- 30:1705: You know what record you know what record was like that here in New York?
- 30:2105: And there was a couple of them, but one of the ones that I remember the most that were like that was the Get Money remix, the one that you did, Enuff. When that came out, you couldn't get your hands on it. So it was playing, and it was like, I don't have it. I think the Benjamins was another one. Not a Benjamins was...
- 30:3505: The the first Benjamin that came out without Biggie and Kim on it, that one. Yeah.
- 30:3905: Yeah. Yeah. You could not find that, bro.
- 30:4105: You have to go look for the bootleg.
- 30:4205: It was like...
- 30:4405: So I know what you mean. Like, there's certain times where records will come out, and you... If you didn't have it, you just would not have it. And sometimes they sell out at the record store now. So now you really don't got it. You gotta wait till next week for the next delivery. Wow.
- 30:5505: Benjamin's first person, Bismark Key at Long Island.
- 30:5705: I remember he was like, shout out to Bismark. That was my guy. Bismark my guy.
- 31:0105: So... So that's... That... Guy. No. I'm just saying that... So from the radio perspective, it was very hard down here just because you had to wait on music.
- 31:1005: There were some DJs that I really looked up to, Darryl Scott, who literally would... He would make these mixtapes, and he he would... His blend... His transitions were great. So you would just sit there and study that. A guy, Chilly Bill Smith, he he eventually was on the radio. He was the radio.... Sit there and study him.
- 31:2905: When I was at Yates School of Communications, they had this big project for your senior year. And so they were like, hey. You can't do radio. That's too easy for you.
- 31:3905: You have to do a television show.
- 31:4105: I'm like, what I'm what I'm a do?
- 31:4405: So I called Chilly Bill Smith. I said, hey.
- 31:4805: Can you give me the morning show?
- 31:5005: Can I come interview the morning show at the radio? At at at at the school?
- 31:5405: He said, yeah. I got you. He brings the morning show. Let's do it. I do my show like Arsenio Hall.
- 32:0305: Like like, I do my show.
- 32:0505: I had to produce it. I had to write everything out.
- 32:0805: And, you know, the cameraman, I'm, like, telling everybody, hey, man. I need I need you to... I mean, when you pull to me, I need this much. You know?
- 32:1405: You know? But I I ended up winning a little a little award on that. But That's dope. That from there from there...
- 32:2105: And then I'm just telling... Like like, you're you're telling them, hey. I I I think I wanna I wanna I wanna get on radio. I wanna get on radio. And they're like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, we're we're gonna look out for you. But when I got on with with... Through Jimmy Olsen, and once I got on, I was like, you couldn't... You... I I lived at the radio station. Any any jock that was on, I would just kinda... I would knock on the door and say, mind if I sit in?
- 32:4605: And, you know, this is back when they had to do the carts.
- 32:4805: Right. Right. Carts. Yeah.
- 32:5005: The carts for the... For commercials and and everything and the music. Right? I'm tell only had, like, three slots. You had to run, like, eight of them joints. How many of them did you? Yeah. You had you had you had all your stuff. Like like, the commercials lined up, you had them all stacked up and ready. I'm a tell you I'm a tell you a quick one. A quick So Madd Hatta, who's here at the radio station, Madd Hatta along with Jammy Jam and JJ Williams. These two gentlemen, I used to roll with them all the time. I'm I'm a young cat.
- 33:1905: Right? I'm young in radio. They in radio.
- 33:2105: I'm on the air one day. On the air mixing on a on a Saturday by myself. The job didn't show up, but they're up at the radio station. Now these are two big guys. They're at the radio station. Radio station. So the guy didn't come in, so they come knocking up. So the...
- 33:3705: You know how y'all have it y'all... At at at y'all studio, there's a like, last time I was at Hot 97, y'all y'all y'all had to... You could see somebody in the booth. Right? It was that close. Yeah.
- 33:4805: Yeah. I... The DJ part...... Another room? The mix room was around the corner. That's us here right now. I'm I'm around the corner from the main studio. So you gotta communicate a different way. Yes. So we kinda had...
- 34:0105: Well, if you... On the mic, you can tell somebody da da da and you can do it. Right? Dude didn't show up.
- 34:0705: So Hatta and and and JJ, they walked and said, hey, man. You gotta do your breaks. I'm like, no.
- 34:1605: I'm I'm the mixer. That's all it... They're like, no. Gotta do your voice. I said, well, why don't y'all go do it? They go, no. We're not doing it. Like, we're arguing during my set. And they're like, no. You gotta do it. You gotta do it yourself.
- 34:2905: They're like, I'm nervous now. I'm nervous. This is my first time cracking the mic by myself.
- 34:3505: I put them... I put the the...
- 34:3805: I put I put the instrumental running the studio. They just sitting there looking at me.
- 34:4205: Fucking nervous Nelly.
- 34:4505: How it goes how it goes? He... Before I open the mic, he says, at any point in time, there's 1,500,000 people listening to you. That... Got it. No question. No question. No question, Here you go. Fucked you up. Open the microphone.
- 35:0105: Hey, magic.
- 35:0305: Hey, Magic 102. Yeah. What's going on? Hi. How y'all doing? Yeah. And they laughing nothing. Say nothing.
- 35:1205: Nothing. I I didn't I didn't even say my name.
- 35:1805: I'm just talking, hey. Call us up. 713. I'll get you in the mix. And then then, like, I hit the mic. I was like, yeah. I did that. He was like, where's the commercial? I look, it's dead air for fifteen seconds, twenty seconds.
- 35:3305: I'm playing commercials, and I'm like... And he go... They go, where's the next commercial? I am... I'm out of there. So now I'm like... So y'all not gonna help me? I...
- 35:4205: By fire.
- 35:4305: They literally sat there and watched me, and it wasn't until, like, the fourth break that I barely got it together. Like, open it up. Okay. I need to say, hey, magic 102, DJ Aggravated. You're alive inside the thunderstorm. The blah blah blah blah.
- 35:5705: Hey. Give me a call. Blah blah blah blah. And I would go, commercial.
- 36:0105: And you should you should play that commercial.
- 36:0205: It took a long time, but they were like, hey.
- 36:0505: You know how to do it now by yourself. You did it. Hey. But you did...
- 36:1005: All these stories just sound like you just been in the right place at the right time. Like, there was... Every time shit, though, but you Every... Yeah. It was like it was like... Yeah. Yeah. That that that was a... I remember I remember. And I was like...
- 36:2305: I remember coming out, and I was telling them, y'all heard me on the radio? Y'all heard me on the...
- 36:2805: We didn't hear nothing.
- 36:2905: So I I walk around proud, like, yeah.
- 36:3205: Did that. They're like, yeah. They were like, I can hear that. I hear I hear that. Said... Yeah. Yeah. But right place at the right time. Again, I'm in I'm in promotions. I'm in promotions.
- 36:4105: I'm the guy that brings the, you know, bring the van out and everything. I give the the the talent they stuff. Like, hey, here we go. We at the Chevrolet dealership.
- 36:4905: Here you go.
- 36:5205: They don't show up. I'm calling my boss.
- 36:5505: Blessed. Blessed. I called my boss. Hey.
- 36:5805: Hey. Barbara, they... They're not here. She go, Ag, you have to do it. Goddamn.
- 37:0205: Do what?
- 37:0405: Do what?
- 37:0505: Now did I write out? I wrote out I wrote out the script. Right? Because I have to give them the script. And he...
- 37:1105: So when they pull up, just go, here you go. Here you go. Boom. Yo, Ag.
- 37:1405: If it wasn't for your friends and your coworkers, you Yeah. Right? You probably gonna be shit.
- 37:2005: Because If it wasn't for people that were showing up. You was trying to say no to everything. Yeah. I was just like, no.
- 37:2505: No. No. No. So they don't do... They... Now now we've done this place, like, four or five times, so I know it. So she's like, you got to do it. You gotta do the call in.
- 37:3705: I do the call in. I'm just like, again, hey. Come on out.
- 37:4205: We over here at the Chevrolet dealership. We we we outside in front of these cars.
- 37:4705: Hey, man. Like, it's something going on down here. Make sure y'all pull up. I mean, yeah, I don't know.
- 37:5205: The first break is terrible.
- 37:5405: So the guy that was on, he goes, Aggravated. You got this. Calm down. Calm down.
- 37:5905: You... You've been doing this like you are...
- 38:0005: Calm down. Like, treat this like like you're in front of the crowd. Relax.
- 38:0605: I'm like... Because he... We we didn't tape them then. Right? We did them live. You just call them live, like, the... They have the thing up. So I do it.
- 38:1305: I get back I get back to the station, my boss, The g... The the president and g m of the radio... Of the station.

- 38:3005: I swear to god. I get back. I'm just saying. She goes, hey.
- 38:3605: Hey.

- 39:0205: He shut the door.
- 39:0305: Oh, man.
- 39:0605: Shit.
- 39:0605: He said, you sounded good out there, man. I said, what? He said, yeah, man. Yeah. What what happened out there? I said, oh. I said, well, I don't wanna say who didn't show up. He said, never mind. I'll find that out. He he said, you sounded good, man.

- 39:2505: Man. Yeah. That's the one... That's one thing that's great about your voice. You have a dope voice. Man, I appreciate that, man. It's...
- 39:3105: You know, when I walk around here, there's a guy by the name of Bill Travis.
- 39:3405: He'll pull me into his offer. He does production.
- 39:3605: He'll pull me into his... And he'll say, hey, read this. And then I'll read it like for fifteen minutes and I'll be like, yo, man. Yo. How... Do do I have it? He go, you got it on the second try. Didn't want you to think he he was good. So you got him on second try. But I've been up... Radio was one... Like, being part of Yates, that prepared me to get to this point when I'm up here at the radio station now. I mean, I lived up here.
- 40:0005: I lived up here. So... You did everything.
- 40:0205: Yeah. You did from from promo to back to other... Promotion promotions really helped me because I I would go with my boss to all these... That was cool too. I would go with her to all these meetings, and then they were like, we need a DJ. We need a... Like, it'd be like the United Negro College Fund. They were like, we need a DJ. She said, I got a DJ right there. I got a DJ right there. They be like, can you... Yes.
- 40:2505: Here's the contract. Here you go.... Prepared.
- 40:2705: Yeah. Here's the contract. Here you go. She she would tell me, you need to walk with your contract from now on because we need... I'll be in these meetings. You might need to get it right there. And I will sign them contracts right there and give me a give me a... And and, again, these are gigs that are are not hip hop. Right? So I have to learn from my from my wedding days. Right. And and them times being put on to to to now I'm in a park... I'm in a place where here I am 25, 26 playing for 40 year olds, you know, playing, like, all they little stuff.
- 40:5605: They little hype stuff. You know? Alright. I'm a tell you my first promo call in because... Blair. Because... Yeah. Because you you did yours.
- 41:0605: I'm on I'm on my way to a gig. I'm in the promo van. The station is 98.7 KISS FM. Yeah.
- 41:1205: I know KISS. Yeah. I'm on my I'm on my way to the gig.
- 41:1505: I'm in Jersey.
- 41:1605: And in Jersey, there's a there's a route Route 1&9 will run the... But the sky the sky Yeah. One and nine.
- 41:2205: Yeah. On the top of that sky thing, in front of the in front of the the the van I was in, a helicopter crashed on the highway. Wow.
- 41:3105: I swear.
- 41:3205: Helicopter crashed on the highway in front of in front of the radio station van. So we saw it. I had to call the station and say, yo.
- 41:4305: Yo. I don't know if you want me to come on air or whatever, but I'm literally on the highway in Route 1 And 9 in New Jersey. You shoulda scrapped.... Just crashed on the highway right in front of me.
- 41:5505: Whatever people are in a helicopter are dead.
- 41:5805: No. And they were like, no way. I said, yes way.
- 42:0105: I said, get the hell out of here.
- 42:0305: So then Wow. There was a there was a old legendary news team at KISS FM. A guy named Bob Slade and a girl Bob Slade. Yeah. And a girl named Ann Tripp.
- 42:1505: So And Ann Tripp. Yeah. So they they were the news people.
- 42:1905: And they were like, yeah. We're we're gonna go to our our correspondent, DJ Enuff.
- 42:2505: Oh, you got elevated. Yo. Live.
- 42:2905: Live on the scene.
- 42:3105: Yo. Over here. Someone over here. Like, that sound like excited. Yo. What's up? This is DJ Enuff calling to you live from the 1&9 in Newton in New Jersey.
- 42:4005: And, yes, I witnessed a helicopter crash. I can't confirm it, but I swear I think somebody's dead.
- 42:4605: And tonight, I'm a be at club. Right?
- 42:4905: Yo. That is crazy, bro. Is crazy. That was a wildest. Think somebody's dead. Wow. So that was the wildest ever. You see I ain't got no Let me ask say dead. Let me ask you a question. When y'all got to radio... Because this radio is different up there. Right? Like, it's it's it's harder... It's extremely hard to get into radio. Right? Because like like I told you, I literally ran around, ran around, was put in a position. And then once I got in a position, I was never gonna let it go. You know what I'm saying? So how hard was it to get into radio there? Because y'all y'all have y'all have a club scene. Right? It's hard, bro.
- 43:2205: It's still hard. Yeah. It's still hard.
- 43:2505: You just had to get online and wait, and and that's it. And and be around and say say yes to everything. And hope a DJ dies or hope a DJ gets No. But all jokes aside. All jokes aside, individually, I... Well, me and I know Kast and Enuff. Probably come we all have that one story that someone didn't show up and boom. There was your turn. Yeah. Yeah. We all have that one story. For me, it was a a phone call. For me, Enuff.
- 43:4905: Yo. I need you to fill in, like, straight up. And then me... Look. So Wait.
- 43:5305: Wait. Wait. Wait. Here you... So I tell people, plan on the club and plan on the radio are two different things. Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:5805: Yeah. Yeah. Because you can't... So when you play in a club, you... I mean, on radio, you you gotta think, like, these are songs out of... I gotta play these songs because these are the hot songs.
- 44:0605: The radio... I mean, club, you can play whatever. Right? Well, the ball game. You know what it is to Ag? I think it's like in...
- 44:1305: From what I've seen from everybody, a lot of people that are in New York radio, you have to kinda build the trust. They have to kinda trust that you're gonna know what you could play, what you can't play. And that comes with, like you said, being around. So, like, I don't think there's there's very few DJs on New York radio that just popped out of the blue and were put on radio. Like, they were always around somehow. Maybe either working in production or working in promotions or know somebody that works there and just being around and soaking game in and watching all the other DJs that are on the on the air and seeing how they move and seeing how they select your songs. So you kinda have an idea of what to do and what not to do when you get a sliver of an opportunity. Right. Right. And once you got that sliver of opportunity and, you know, whoever the people that are in power at that time will be like, okay. You know what? This guy, he's he's a dependable guy. He kinda knows what he's doing. So when something opens up at some point Right. Maybe he'll be around enough for me to, like, give him a shot. Right? Like... No. I I literally remember getting on and my hand shaking, putting the record on the needle. Like, lit... I was nervous as fuck. Because you you you know, like, everybody's listening.
- 45:2305: Yeah. And he's Hot 97, which is a whole another ball game. You know, it's very, like... I was mad intimidated. Like, oh, shit.
- 45:3005: But, of course, I put, you know, I put that Camilo mask on, but I was shook. And that record I played, my nigga, it What was the record, Camilo? It was Erick Sermon, "React".
- 45:4005: Remember that? Yeah. Ben Yeah. Yo. That record, I put it on.
- 45:4505: Breaking that record. Yeah. Felt an eternity.
- 45:4805: It felt like it felt like it was five minutes.
- 45:5105: Like like... And I was... And I... You know, in my head, wanna do what I do. I I mean, I kinda knew what I wanted to do because I was around.
- 45:5805: But but but What what DJ will show you, I will literally pull up in a club...
- 46:0405: Pull up to a club thinking, yeah. I wanna rock this. I wanna rock that. I wanna rock this. And as soon as you get there, first record there, oh, so we're not doing that? Oh, I guess...
- 46:1305: I gotta go I gotta go this way. So I I get that when you when you pull up and you think you... And then and then I... Me, I just kept the hits hits safe. Mhmm. As you should. And then, of course, Enuff, of course, Enuff put the pressure on us. Me and Threat, don't fuck this up. I need you guys tomorrow. Get ready. And I think it was the morning show.
- 46:3205: It definitely was the morning show. Morning show.
- 46:3405: Yeah. And... Wait. Hold up. Hold up. More intimidating is with Star and Buc Wild. Yo.
- 46:4005: So you already know the pressure.
- 46:4305: I was a fan of Star and Buc Wild, bro. But you know the pressure was on.
- 46:4705: But to that pressure, you're talking about one thing about radio programmers, DJs, and mixshows, whatever. They really believe that when they be like, yo. It's your turn. You know everything. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Around.
- 47:0005: Right? Yeah. You've been watching. Right? Yeah. You don't know. Shit. And you being that motherfucker shook as fuck.
- 47:0605: But you got that face on, yeah. I got this shit. Fuck out. Hey. And and back then, started star star...
- 47:1205: Started a podcast. Relax. Yo. But but but then at that point, Star and Buc Wild also, like, starts putting the pressure on, let's go, Camilo.
- 47:1905: What are gonna put today?
- 47:2105: You know, do you have some... A Metallica?
- 47:2305: No. Do you have Nirvana? No. But then that goes to show that, you know, everybody's path is different, but you have Rush.
- 47:3005: There you go. He was... That guy... They were he was a big Rush fan. Yeah.
- 47:3405: They would they would fire up pressure people.
- 47:3605: Meanwhile, I started on overnights where I could do whatever the hell I wanted. So I just have to I just have to, like, learn what works and what didn't. I'll go up there and just play some crazy shit. I'd like, yeah. That didn't work. And then we just... This works. We used to tell all the DJs that if they got... Like, we used to do these mixed weekends, and we would mix, like, the twenty four hours.
- 47:5505: Nobody wanted what we call the glow hour.
- 47:5705: We was like, that's the hour... That's the time when, you know, people leaving the club and then you listen and they really not listening. I said, but this is the time you learn.
- 48:0505: You could sit in there, mix well, learn your stuff, and then was... With some... When that other spot open up, you could be like, somebody was listening like, hey. I heard such and such. He's pretty good. He says, Bliss is good. Put him on this spot.
- 48:1805: Yep. That's the time you learn. You learn on that on that point. Look. I'm a give you a quick story. JQ.
- 48:2405: JQ was walking around... JQ was in Bryan Bryan College Station. Right? First of all, JQ had a durag to match every every...
- 48:3305: When y'all interview him, he had a durag to match every color of anything he had.
- 48:3905: Pink, fuchsia, what... He had a few Big pimping. Yo. Big pimping.
- 48:4605: And and and as loud as he is now, he was very quiet.
- 48:5005: Hey, guys. How y'all doing? You you need anything? You need an... You need something right here? Let me write. Q was always around us. And then I I think one of us was like, yo.
- 49:0005: Why is this... Like, is he not a mixer? And then... Because he was helping out Walter D. And they were like, no. He's like, no. He's the he's the he's the shit back on. I said, well, shoot. Yeah.
- 49:0905: Somebody put him on. You know? I remember Walter D. Yeah. Walter D. Walter D was our head of mixshow at that time.
- 49:1505: But... Yeah. Yo. Can you do me a favor? Can you talk about car culture When Houston? And, yeah, candy paint, the rims, and all that. Because to me, that has a lot to do with...
- 49:2705: Like, you you have a dope mixtape.
- 49:3005: Yeah. It just pairs well with the with the car. Alright. I go back eighties, in the eighties. Right? So there's a park called MacGregor Park, and and and and all... And the guy by the name of Darryl Scott... Darryl Scott was the the man who made the mixtapes.
- 49:4705: Right? He would put a mixtape out on a Sunday. Right?
- 49:5005: And it it took a while for music to get down here. So you have 14...
- 49:5405: Like, he'll put a 14 out and then four week... Three weeks later, 14.5.
- 49:5805: We didn't have mixtape that came out every week. They had to wait for the music.
- 50:0205: So Darryl Scott was that guy. And so the low riders here were the the the slab riders, you know, candy paint, elbows, the elbows... The... Now those those rims only came on Cadillacs.
- 50:1805: So how did they get them? They will steal them. Right? So you would go... They would go steal those those rims and put them on on on their cars.
- 50:2505: So Darryl Scott would make tapes, and they would... On Sunday, people would... First of all, you... I I can't even... You can't understand how big MacGregor Park on a Sunday. I would ride my bicycle up there, man. And it was just... It was so many cars. You had Mustangs.
- 50:4505: You had Corvettes, and then you had those... The low...
- 50:4805: The slab riders.
- 50:4905: And then you have people with the full speakers, like, no rattle, no nothing. Like, it sounded like a real concert in their back.
- 50:5805: Six-by-nines across the top, two 15s, no rattle, and they just... So Darryl Scott will make them tapes, they would...
- 51:0605: After the park, they would take them tapes and ride down MLK and ride back. Some of the some of the cool low ride... Slab riders, they found out I was a DJ. I'll never forget one of them came to my house, and he was like, hey, man.
- 51:1905: Because he had this man... Like, this boy's sound was so clear. Mhmm. I could... I'll be in my house, in my back... In my room, on the phone. And in my neighborhood, it's real quiet.
- 51:3205: And I hear, so stupid.
- 51:3405: I'm like, hey. Hey. I gotta go. I gotta go.
- 51:3705: I would get his tape and run outside and meet him in the street.
- 51:4205: Like, in the street, like, turn this... Turn it down. Turn it down, man. Turn it down. Like, my daddy for the... My daddy called them crack cruisers. He say, you tell them tell them crack cruisers, turn that music down. But because I was a DJ, I had, like, four slab riders that would come to my house, and they would get... Because I wasn't Darryl Scott. Right?
- 52:0205: I'm a up and coming DJ.
- 52:0405: I didn't wanna be one of those DJs that was just gonna play... Make tapes. Because I... Again, I was like, eventually, I'm a get to radio. Right? Because I was doing a lot of radio stuff. So I was like, I'm... Eventually, I'm a get to radio.
- 52:1405: So I'm I'm not gonna be on that too. But but making a name in the neighborhood, I would I would make a... I would definitely make a lot of tapes for a a bunch of slab writers and and and and they had...
- 52:2505: Man, I was shocked to have been there, man.
- 52:2805: They... Their music would be so loud. And on Sunday, they would park Facts.
- 52:3305: They would park at the car wash that was next to the to the park.
- 52:3705: And under... Know how the car wash, you know, the one you you spray like this, you know, they would get under there and they would battle each other to see who sounds better, and everybody's around. Because it it was... Yes.
- 52:4805: And I can remember I was on my bicep, and I heard my boy play a big butt, and I was like, that's me right there. Yeah. No drop. No drops.
- 52:5705: I ain't had no drop. Well, ain't no drop on that. And so, yo, who made that for you? He said, man, don't worry about that. I'm standing right there like, heck, just say me.
- 53:0605: He didn't wanna give away the sauce. He didn't wanna give away the sauce. Nope. Not at all. Not at all, man. That's way... Yo.
- 53:1305: Yo. Can I tell you a story? Go for it, boss. When Biggie and Pac was going through their shit. Right? Mhmm. I was on tour, and we did a show in Houston.
- 53:2205: Word. Show was with Ice Cube, the Geto Boys, and somebody else. It could've been Naughty by Nature.
- 53:2905: That sounds about right. So then at the end of the show is the first time I got to hear "Hit 'Em Up".
- 53:3505: Oh. Not not at the venue from the slabs, from the cars outside.
- 53:4105: And I... And and I'm over here like, hey. What the fuck is this?
- 53:4505: And junior market is... I'm listening. And Pac straight shitting on everybody. And I'm over here like, and, yo, they... That shit is louder than motherfucking. The whole world is celebrating. Like, it's it's a thing. Houston Houston Houston for for... So you had all the kids that went to the East Coast to go to school. Right? The college kids. But the kids in the neighborhood, they was pop fans, and you have the other thing. I can tell you the first day I heard that record.
- 54:1405: My homegirl by the name of Shannon Shannon...
- 54:1805: Shannon.
- 54:1905: Shannon was working Shannon was working for Bad Boy, and she got ahold of that tape. She said, we would meet at this gas station, like, right where her house is and my house meet. This is really down the street. And she goes, you don't know this, but I got ahold of this. I'm not playing. I'm not promoting, but I think you should hear it. Because I... She know I was a Pac fan and a Biggie fan. Right? And I was like, I was a whole Biggie, like, man, they don't need to be beefing, man. They making good music.
- 54:4605: She said, pop it in. So I meant, pop it in.
- 54:5005: That's why I... You'll... I said Crazy. Right? Yo.
- 54:5505: Yo. This is not good. This is not good. This is good. This is gonna be a problem.
- 55:0005: The day she gave it to me two weeks later is when it released.
- 55:0305: That was it after that. Gone.
- 55:0605: Yeah. I remember I remember listening to that on on college radio. What were these guys?
- 55:1005: Marty Moore on Yeah. Yeah. You said it right. Wait. They could play they could play the regular version? No. They played it, and then they were critiquing, and they were like...
- 55:1705: That was like, fuck that. New York... Yo.
- 55:2005: They were tight.
- 55:2205: And I... And and and that was the first time I heard it, and they were, like, so pissed off. Mind you, this is New York. You know? Yeah. So everybody got that East Coast flag.
- 55:2905: Fuck that. And then then, like, two weeks later, LA, LA, and all that shit came out. All that fucking craziness. I remember that era. Was crazy. The Aggravated real quick. You know, we gotta talk about how you became a Heavy Hitter. Man, look.
- 55:4405: You know what I'm saying? Let let... DJ Farris.
- 55:4905: Remember remember back in the day, we used to go to all the conferences. Right?
- 55:5405: They had... Was... If not just mixshow power or something, they had all the The already Yeah. Gavin.
- 55:5905: All of them. Yeah. I was at... We was at all that. Me and my me and my mama are Def Jam Blaster. Me and... We the Hollywood Boys. So we we we out there. Right? So I just remember bumping into Pharris one day. Wait. Let me go back.
- 56:1205: Threat.
- 56:1305: Threat was in Houston, and we got cool with Threat. Threat was with Ruff Ryders.
- 56:2005: He was he was he was rolling with them. They came down to the Kappa Beach party. Right?
- 56:2505: And this is the first time I ever heard somebody say it Ian's. He was like, man, it's Ian's. The Ian's. What is Ian's?
- 56:3105: He said, extra niggas. Extra niggas, man. Extra niggas. I'm like, woah.
- 56:3505: Right.
- 56:3605: I said I said I said I said, I'm gonna use that. Can I use that?
- 56:4105: He goes, yeah. So he goes, this is this is this is how my introduction to y'all. He goes, me and my boys, we we thinking about getting this crew together.
- 56:5005: You know? You just do Camilo, Enuff? I said, I heard Enuff. I heard Camilo yet.
- 56:5405: Right? So I'm like, yeah. Yeah. We was trying to get this crew together, man. I'm I'm I'm a I'm a see what you're down. So that... That's just early. Right? Never thought of none of it. Then one day I see y'all with the Willie Esco ad, the the ad in the pay... In the... I see y'all say, yo. This is still right here. I was like, okay. Cool. I understand.
- 57:1105: Now I'm now I'm looking. Right? Now I'm looking. I'm like, okay. I need to... I'm I'm... How do I get? And then all the other DJ crews start coming out. Right?
- 57:1805: And I was like, yo. But Threat was telling me about this. I I think I wanna get down with this. Right? Because that Willie Esco shit really went far. Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:2605: Yeah. So... That was the thing, bro. So was... What... Pharris is part of what tier?
- 57:3005: Like, the first or second tier? Probably the second.
- 57:3305: First first, second. One of those. Yeah. Right.
- 57:3505: So we're out. I'm seeing I'm seeing him everything everything.
- 57:4005: So he say, yo. I like your vibe, man. I'm a check you out, man. I I... I'm trying to get you in Houston.
- 57:4505: Yeah. We made it heavier than Houston. Said, say what now?
- 57:4905: I said, hold on, bro. Hold on. Hold on. Don't don't don't gas me up like that. Yeah. Aggravated doesn't believe anything anybody tells me. No.
- 57:5805: He was like, hold on. So we're literally at every every conference.
- 58:0405: Right? And I'm like, okay. He was like, yeah. Yeah. I'm I'm I'm a get you down. I'm a get you down. I don't know what was said.
- 58:1005: I don't know what was said.
- 58:1205: All I know is this. In Puerto Rico, y'all brought me into Puerto... Y'all brought me into this movie. Y'all in in one of the rooms.
- 58:2005: I swear to god. I told everybody. I said, it felt like I was getting inducted into the mob.
- 58:2605: Y'all were in a circle.
- 58:2805: I walked in, you know. Hey, man. How you doing, man?
- 58:3205: Tell us about yourself, man. Hey.
- 58:3405: Hi. Hi, guys. Hi. I'm DJ Aggravated from Houston, man. I've been doing this for a long time. I'm on the radio out there.
- 58:4005: I hold I hold shit down. I do my thing. And that's it. Right? And I'm like, you willing to die for this shit? Yo.
- 58:5105: Look.
- 58:5205: Y'all were... Some of y'all were in circle some of y'all were in a circle with the chair looking like this, like...
- 58:5905: And I'm and I'm like, I'm mad nervous.
- 59:0105: Now we out there in Puerto Rico, the summit, Blaster Blaster end up winning mid show south AM something or something. So he was down. He was over there. I'm like... I was like, what you doing? He said, I'm I'm trying to trying to get... Look. I'm trying to get down with these Heavy Hitters, man. He said, oh, word? I said, yeah.
- 59:1805: I'm trying to get down with these Heavy Hitters. So when I went into that little thing, I I never forget. I laid on somebody saying, what... One of y'all came to me and said, hey.
- 59:2705: Come on back in here, man. You finna be a Heavy Hitter. And from that moment on... Like, because I was already... So what happened was when when Pharris started telling me, I started asking all the record reps, like, yo, can you put a good word in me?
- 59:4105: You know you know Enuff. You know Enuff.
- 59:4305: You know, put a good word in me.
- 59:4405: You know, some of them will be heavier.
- 59:4505: Some of will be heavier. Because that was my only connection to y'all in New York.
- 59:4905: Right? Because Right. Pharris was like... Pharris... I have Pharris number. Pharris is Chicago. I need I need I need to go to the main. I need to... Need somebody... Hey. Tell them I'm on... Tell them you got somebody in Houston. You know? And and so I remember one of the record reps.
- 1:00:0405: I'm...
- 1:00:0505: What's my boy name? I can't think of his name. He was like, you know, if they make you happy here, that's only because you look like you're Puerto Rican or Dominican.
- 1:00:1205: Right?
- 1:00:1405: Yeah. That's not true.
- 1:00:1605: That's false information.
- 1:00:1805: See? That's the... Yo. That's the craziness, bro. That's the... That's not true.
- 1:00:2405: Anyway...
- 1:00:2505: Yo. This is how he was telling me.
- 1:00:2705: I was like, I don't speak no Spanish.
- 1:00:2805: I'm from I'm from Texas. Mexico is next.
- 1:00:3005: So anyway... That was Chris Green.
- 1:00:3205: Once I got in. Right? Once I got in.
- 1:00:3505: I'll never forget. We was in Puerto Rico.
- 1:00:3705: Boogs. Yeah. I don't know if Boogs was was was hazing me.
- 1:00:4205: I was around y'all twenty four seven. Sounds about right.

- 1:00:4805: We had a we had a McDonald's. He probably don't even remember. Had a McDonald's, bro.
- 1:00:5105: He is talking Spanish to the lady, telling her that I'm Spanish, and I don't support my heritage.
- 1:00:5805: And he said I don't speak Spanish. So the... I'm ordering my food, and the lady is looking at me like, she's she's grilling like like like...
- 1:01:0805: And I'm like, yo, what's up? And she's like Damn, Boogs. Ain't Don't set him up, pal. You don't you don't like you don't like them Puerto... I I suck Puerto Rico.
- 1:01:1405: Was like, yeah. Why why you don't speak no Spanish? I said, I don't know Spanish.
- 1:01:1905: And he's like, yeah. He don't wanna talk Spanish because he doesn't want... He wants to be an American and all this. Oh oh, you want... I said, I'm in Texas. Mexico is next to me. What are you talking about? I don't know. Like... And he is backed up.
- 1:01:3105: Racking up. And I was like, yeah.
- 1:01:3405: And I'm so new. I'm like I'm like, you know, bro. Maybe Maybe I'm getting hag... I'm getting hazed right now. Okay. Alright. I don't know. But Boogs is the one that did that to me, though. Yeah. You're Aggravated. What I do Alright.
- 1:01:4705: What I do gotta say, though, I like...
- 1:01:4905: I'm proud of having you down with the crew, bro. Yeah, man. Yeah. You're one you're one of them ones, man. Man, but I appreciate it, man. Dude. You're always in contact.
