Transcript
- 0:25Good morning. It's day seven. We're back on the path after our rest day yesterday in Pamploma.
- 0:33Today 23, 24 kilometers walking from Pamploma to Puente Lorena.
- 0:40We stayed in the old city in Pamploma. That wasn't by plan or design.
- 0:48It was just where the accommodation happened to be, but we're really thankful for that.
- 0:52We arrived smack bang in the middle of the old city beautiful now we don't seem
- 0:59to make beautiful things like that anymore we know we're more about functionality
- 1:05and maximizing space etc,
- 1:11but the city was was very beautiful to explore a little bit of water on the
- 1:18ground today a little bit of mud underfoot because last night it did rain,
- 1:23it's not raining now hasn't rained on us yet while we're walking but there's some big dark,
- 1:30gray clouds hanging low above fingers crossed
- 1:33that stays away we've got wet weather gear i haven't had to use it but it is
- 1:39a bit muddy underfoot pamploma the old city's fantastic well worth a visit you
- 1:44could stay there unwind spend a number of days there actually when we got there
- 1:49i didn't feel like I needed a rest day.
- 1:53Was keen to keep going but we we booked it in any way one so we could explore pamploma and two,
- 2:00just so we could manage our bodies knowing that
- 2:03we probably our bodies needed a rest day even if we felt like we didn't so that
- 2:07was good walking out of pamploma you go from the old into the new city and then
- 2:13those sort of outer suburbs extend for a fair while since leaving saint john
- 2:18we We haven't actually been in a big town or city.
- 2:22And Plame is bigger than St. John. Most of the towns that we've been in have
- 2:26been part of the street, a couple of houses, maybe a shop, a supermercado, cafe bar.
- 2:35That's really about it. Some are even smaller than that, just a collection of
- 2:38houses. There's nothing there that you walk straight past.
- 2:43Our footwear that we've got on. Well, actually, I should talk about what we
- 2:47did last time when Sherilyn and I walked the five days from Asaria to Santiago.
- 2:53We wore hiking boots. That was a disaster in terms of the footwear.
- 2:58My feet had never been so sore.
- 3:01The boots, we thought we were doing the right thing. They were heavy,
- 3:05really heavy, contributed to the fatigue.
- 3:07And we didn't really wear them in like we should have. and so not only did we
- 3:15have the weight the feet were just so sore from them,
- 3:20But we thought we were doing the right thing, but we learned from that.
- 3:23Also on that, those five days we went straight into big distances.
- 3:28You know, 20, 25 plus kilometre days.
- 3:32This time we've started with less Ks and we're building up. Much smarter this time, I think.
- 3:38But the shoes that we've got now are trail shoes rather than hiking boots. So a lot lighter.
- 3:45We've got good grip on them. I believe they've got a rock plate in them.
- 3:50So a piece of, I think it's the metal that runs between the shoe and the sole
- 3:55that just limits the, how much you can feel the stones underneath.
- 4:03They've got great grip. They're light. They look like a jogger.
- 4:07Sherilyn's is a wide toe box. I didn't even know that these things even existed,
- 4:12but most shoes come to a point at the front and sort of squeeze your toes in.
- 4:17This doesn't. It allows your toes to display.
- 4:21Chan's been wearing his as his school shoes, I suppose, for the last six months, wearing them in.
- 4:26I've been wearing mine from about September onwards as my work shoes,
- 4:31and each afternoon we've been walking before we came away, So,
- 4:36well and truly, they're worn in,
- 4:39we're used to them, and the weight of the shoe is not contributing to the fatigue.
- 4:44So, footwear-wise, doing a whole lot better than last time.
- 4:49About halfway on our journey today, walking through farms. These are agricultural farms.
- 4:57Not too sure what crop they're growing. It's just the start of the spring,
- 5:03So everything is fairly low to the ground at the moment, but it's certainly
- 5:07sprouting and growing very green.
- 5:10A lot of windmills. It's a very early area. We've just climbed actually quite a long hill.
- 5:17And there's a tremendous line of windmills there.
- 5:20And it's from horizon through to horizon, from what we can see, a huge number of them.
- 5:26The cloud's very low today. It's almost like you could reach up and touch it.
- 5:32I'm still overcast, still no rain, haven't drinks it yet.
- 5:39A lot of brambles, bramble bushes, I think they are, or hedges on the side.
- 5:45A sawny sort of growth that creates natural fence line.
- 5:50Just the countryside's beautiful. Rolling, rolling green hills,
- 5:55mountains, clouds, very picturesque.
- 5:58Breeze is brisk, breezes back today. That's not too bad, not as strong as it was the other day.
- 6:05We're just about at the summit of this hill or mountain that we're going up.
- 6:09This is the one that has the wind turbines all along the crest of it.
- 6:15It's about as close as I've ever been to a windmill, wind turbine,
- 6:19I should say, the electricity generating ones.
- 6:22And yes, you can hear a bit of a dull noise that comes from them.
- 6:28It's not overly loud. I suppose we're still probably a couple of hundred metres
- 6:32away from them, but it does sound a little bit like a plane might be off in
- 6:37the distance and coming.
- 6:39But there's a lot of them. They run right along the crest of this mountain range.
- 6:46Imagine they'd be generating a fair amount of power.
- 6:50Not overly ugly, but there's a lot of them and they do run across the mountain range.
- 6:55But yes, there is a bit of a dull noise that comes from them.
- 6:59These ones are spinning very fast, and I imagine it's always fairly windy up
- 7:04here, so probably a lot of electricity that's been generated.
- 7:09Coming up to the peak of that last mountain, it started spitting,
- 7:13so it wasn't the greatest place for us to stop and put our rain jackets on, but we did that anyway.
- 7:21It didn't quite start raining. It just was spitting for a while.
- 7:25We stopped for lunch and decided to make the call to put our rain pants on as
- 7:30well because there looks to be some wet weather chasing us over the top of that mountain,
- 7:38still in our rear vision mirror.
- 7:41So we're walking along with our right pants on and our rain jackets on just as a precaution.
- 7:51Hasn't started raining yet and hopefully it stays off.
- 7:56Big day today, about 24 kilometres and I think we're about seven or eight kilometres to go.
- 8:02So let's hope we can beat the weather to our destination.
- 8:06One of the things that we've seen a lot of is cherry blossoms,
- 8:10or what we believe to be cherry blossoms.
- 8:13So that iconic cherry blossom that you would expect to see in Japan at a certain time of the year.
- 8:20We've seen so many white, pink, the white and pink, particularly coming out of Pamploma.
- 8:28There was a boulevard there with a lot of cherry blossoms.
- 8:32But really all the way along today and
- 8:35some parts of the other days we've seen a lot of the cherry blossoms and you're
- 8:40not going to stiff breeze blows through and some of the petals start to blow
- 8:43off the tree that's that's very pretty just coming through a section that's
- 8:48also got some olive trees as well to our left.
- 8:53Today has been agricultural, it's been crops, where previous days has been more livestock.
- 9:01So we're here, Puenta Lorena, we've done our 24 kilometres today.
- 9:08The town is much smaller than Pamploma, but bigger than some of the towns that
- 9:12we've walked through today.
- 9:14Very similar to many towns that we've gone through today, stone streets,
- 9:19beautiful big stone buildings.
- 9:21You almost couldn't find our hotel you know
- 9:24it's just a it's a big door in a stone wall and
- 9:28you go through up a couple of stairs and then suddenly you end up
- 9:30in this beautifully renovated a house we've got
- 9:33our our room and bathroom and all those sorts of
- 9:36things the renovations are really nice i've done
- 9:39about 35 000 steps today jan has done
- 9:42about 40 000 cheryl and start about the same as
- 9:45me i hope 38 she says so yeah
- 9:48we've racked up the kilometers today probably one of the longer days that we
- 9:52will do on the Camino unless we start changing our mud map plan but we're here
- 9:57we're going to rest first then we might head out and explore the town pick up
- 10:01some dinner come back and rest for tomorrow that's day seven done.
