- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Ready for episode 79? Luna: I am so ready. I've been practicing my Dutch around the house. Lucas: That's great to hear. So today we're going to talk about hobbies. Free time activities — everyone has them, and it's a nice way to connect with people. Luna: Ohh, hobbies. That's perfect because I was just thinking about what to say when someone asks what I like to do. Lucas: Exactly. So the first word we'll learn is 'lezen' — to read. Lezen. Luna: Lezen. I love reading, so that's a good one. Lucas: It is. Let's say it together: lezen. Luna: Lezen. Lucas: Perfect. Now if you want to say 'I love reading', you say 'Ik hou van lezen.' Ik hou van lezen. Luna: Ik hou van lezen. That's nice. So 'hou van' is like 'love'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Ik hou van' means 'I love' or 'I like a lot'. So you can use it with any hobby. Luna: Got it. So 'Ik hou van lezen' is my new sentence. Lucas: Yes. Now another hobby is 'schilderen' — to paint. Schilderen. Luna: Schilderen. That's a bit of a mouthful. Schilderen. Lucas: You've got it. Try it once more? Schilderen. Luna: Schilderen. Lucas: Beautiful. So 'Ik hou van schilderen.' Luna: Ik hou van schilderen. But what if I don't paint? Can I say 'Ik hou niet van schilderen'? Lucas: Yes, 'niet' makes it negative. 'Ik hou niet van schilderen' — I don't like painting. Luna: That's handy. So I'll use that for some hobbies I'm not into. Lucas: Exactly. Now a third hobby is 'sporten' — to play sports. Sporten. Luna: Sporten. That's similar to English. Lucas: Yeah, it's an easy one. So 'Ik hou van sporten.' Luna: Ik hou van sporten. But what if I want to say 'my hobby is reading'? Lucas: Good question. You say 'Mijn hobby is lezen.' Mijn hobby is lezen. Luna: Mijn hobby is lezen. So 'mijn' is 'my' — we learned that in an earlier episode. Lucas: Yes, exactly. So you can say 'Mijn hobby is schilderen' or 'Mijn hobby is sporten'. Luna: Mijn hobby is sporten. That sounds good. Lucas: Let's practice a little conversation. I'll ask you: 'Wat is jouw hobby?' What is your hobby? Luna: Wat is jouw hobby? Okay, I'll say: 'Mijn hobby is lezen. Ik hou van lezen.' Lucas: Perfect. And if I ask 'Hou je van sporten?' Do you like sports? Luna: Uh... 'Ja, ik hou van sporten.' Or 'Nee, ik hou niet van sporten.' Lucas: Yes, exactly. You've got the pattern down. Luna: This is fun. I can already talk about what I like. Lucas: And it's useful for making friends. A quick thing — if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Dutch, it's because of a small group of listeners who support through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's what keeps this ad-free and going. So thank you to everyone who chips in. Luna: Yeah, it really helps. And we appreciate it so much. Okay, back to hobbies. Can we do a little scene? Lucas: Let's do it. Imagine you meet someone at a party. They say: 'Hallo, ik ben Tom. Wat is jouw hobby?' Luna: Okay, I'll say: 'Hallo Tom, mijn hobby is schilderen. Ik hou van schilderen.' Lucas: And Tom says: 'Leuk! Ik hou ook van schilderen.' Luna: Oh, 'ook' means 'also'? So he likes painting too. Lucas: Yes. 'Ik hou ook van schilderen' — I also like painting. So now you have a common interest. Luna: That's so cool. So I could say 'Ik hou ook van lezen' if I want to agree. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice the phrases one more time. Repeat after me: lezen. Luna: Lezen. Lucas: Schilderen. Luna: Schilderen. Lucas: Sporten. Luna: Sporten. Lucas: Ik hou van lezen. Luna: Ik hou van lezen. Lucas: Mijn hobby is schilderen. Luna: Mijn hobby is schilderen. Lucas: Great job. Now you can talk about your hobbies in Dutch. Practice these with a friend or just to yourself. See you next time on Fexingo! Luna: Tot ziens! Keep practicing everyone.
