Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It was a much needed to win. The Sunday the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Orioles sent the moms home happy at the Oriel Park
- 0:12Speaker 1: at Camden Yards as they beat the Athletics two to one.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Take a little bit of momentum anyway into the next
- 0:18Speaker 1: showdown with the Bronx Bombers from New York. They'll be
- 0:21Speaker 1: in town on Monday and welcome in the latest edition
- 0:24Speaker 1: Berdland Territory with Brad Brock and Tim Barbolace. I'm Steve Maleski.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So guys, anyone is good right now? For the Orioles.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We know that eighteen and twenty three they need a
- 0:33Speaker 1: bunch of them. And here's one thing we can say
- 0:36Speaker 1: for the Sunday win against the Athletics. We have hardly
- 0:39Speaker 1: said this year. They won because of pitching and defense.
- 0:43Speaker 1: This was an old school oriol victory. Let's start with
- 0:46Speaker 1: the defense man. What a throw by Leote ta Veris.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We had heard about his plus defense. We saw it
- 0:53Speaker 1: today and I checked on statcast during the game. He
- 0:56Speaker 1: is in the ninety ninth percentile for arm strength. He
- 1:00Speaker 1: throws better than ninety nine percent of Major league position players,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and we saw it there, guys, what a hose he showed.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, perfect job, that's exactly how we're told to do
- 1:11Speaker 2: with the ball hit the center field like that kind
- 1:12Speaker 2: of a due or do I play?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Came in full speed, made a good transfer.
- 1:17Speaker 2: To his throwing hand and obviously made a cannon throw
- 1:19Speaker 2: to the plate, and it was a great catch by
- 1:21Speaker 2: Basile home plate too, with the runner bearing down on him.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You don't see those plays too often anymore, so it
- 1:26Speaker 2: was very well executed, playing exactly what you draw up
- 1:28Speaker 2: when you do this kind of stuff way back in
- 1:30Speaker 2: spring training when you start.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Steve, you said it.
- 1:35Speaker 5: Unfortunately, there haven't been many signature defensive moments for this
- 1:39Speaker 5: ball club so.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Far, but that absolutely was one.
- 1:42Speaker 5: And Tavarius with just a hoes man ninety three point
- 1:46Speaker 5: seven miles per hour on that throw to home plate
- 1:50Speaker 5: and getting Cortes by quite frankly a step or two
- 1:53Speaker 5: Sam Basio able to secure the ball because, like you said, Brad,
- 1:58Speaker 5: you really don't see those type of collisions at home
- 2:00Speaker 5: plate anymore. It was just a beautiful play and one
- 2:05Speaker 5: that Orioles fans are really happy was made.
- 2:08Speaker 4: For sure.
- 2:10Speaker 1: He had nice play on both ends, no doubt about it.
- 2:12Speaker 1: A little bit of a stare down there by Besaio
- 2:14Speaker 1: after he got the runner gave him a look. Yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I saw he barreled me over and I hung under
- 2:19Speaker 1: the ball and albert As ran out to make sure
- 2:21Speaker 1: he was okay. I mean, so many things were going
- 2:25Speaker 1: not quite right for the Orioles in the middle innings,
- 2:27Speaker 1: Adleie gets robbed with the bases loaded, Gunner and Blaze
- 2:31Speaker 1: strike out with the bases loaded. Could have been many
- 2:34Speaker 1: more runs than two, and many times this year at
- 2:38Speaker 1: that game would have gotten away from the Orioles. So again,
- 2:41Speaker 1: we don't want to oversell it. It's one win. They're
- 2:43Speaker 1: eighteen and twenty three, but they did things right late,
- 2:46Speaker 1: including Rico Suave again doing his bit at the end
- 2:49Speaker 1: that they held onto this win.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of what we know we talked about
- 2:55Speaker 2: weeks ago when we were saying, just get a lead
- 2:57Speaker 2: and both of this bullpen can hold it.
- 2:58Speaker 3: The bullpen's really good. They're still doing their.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Job when they get the you know, when they have
- 3:04Speaker 2: a lead, they're keeping it and when games are close
- 3:06Speaker 2: are keeping it close.
- 3:07Speaker 3: So it's it's kind of one of those things.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You're not gonna win every game pretty and today, like
- 3:12Speaker 2: you said, they missed some opportunities there in the middle,
- 3:14Speaker 2: but at the end, it's a win and it's heading
- 3:16Speaker 2: into a big series here with the Yankee So it's
- 3:18Speaker 2: that was after losing the first two of that series.
- 3:20Speaker 2: If you feel a lot better winning that Sunday game
- 3:23Speaker 2: heading into facing the Yankees again these next couple of days.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it would have been just such a cut punch
- 3:29Speaker 5: if they would have dropped that game. Felt seven games
- 3:32Speaker 5: below five hundred at that point, but now you're back
- 3:34Speaker 5: to five, and you know that game that we saw,
- 3:38Speaker 5: and I know that mass and Kevin Brown was talking
- 3:40Speaker 5: about it on the broadcast. Heading into today, the Orioles
- 3:44Speaker 5: have allowed three or more runs in twenty five straight games,
- 3:47Speaker 5: which was their longest streak since twenty nineteen, and they're
- 3:52Speaker 5: the only team in baseball to yet to record a shutout,
- 3:56Speaker 5: and they were very close.
- 3:58Speaker 4: And look the pitching all the way round.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Keegan Aiken was fantastic in that first inning as an opener.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Chris Bassett, that was probably his best game as an Oriole,
- 4:08Speaker 5: going six innings, just giving up that winner. And I
- 4:11Speaker 5: thought it was really cool seeing Anthony is in that
- 4:13Speaker 5: big time spot where he had to kind of find
- 4:16Speaker 5: himself there Brad not necessarily on his A game, but
- 4:20Speaker 5: able to have a clean inning there keeping the lead.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing for rookies outing is like that.
- 4:28Speaker 2: A lot of times you kind of see it get
- 4:30Speaker 2: away from him, but for him to able to step
- 4:31Speaker 2: up there, kind of lost the zone on those couple
- 4:33Speaker 2: of hitters, but able to get out there with a zero,
- 4:35Speaker 2: And that's the biggest thing. At the end of the day,
- 4:37Speaker 2: when you're pitching in a setup role, it's not about stats.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It's not about you know, batting average gainst. It's about
- 4:43Speaker 2: not allowing runners to get past home play. And especially
- 4:45Speaker 2: one run game there, he didn't give up a single
- 4:48Speaker 2: or base it there to give up the lead and
- 4:50Speaker 2: then the.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Orals have to scratch and get another one across the board.
- 4:52Speaker 2: He put his zero up even without his A stuff
- 4:55Speaker 2: and got the job done, and that's that's really what
- 4:57Speaker 2: you look for, and that's really big for rookie. I
- 4:59Speaker 2: think Anthony nunia Is the last couple of weeks has
- 5:01Speaker 2: been really impressive because he kind of went to stretch
- 5:03Speaker 2: there where he was letting up a few runs and
- 5:05Speaker 2: I know I can think back to my rookie year
- 5:08Speaker 2: when you have good outings, you think it's going to
- 5:09Speaker 2: happen all the time. When it goes bad, it feels
- 5:11Speaker 2: like it goes south really fast, and it's hard to
- 5:14Speaker 2: like catch your feet underneath you because the game's moving
- 5:16Speaker 2: so fast and everything just kind of comes to you
- 5:18Speaker 2: really quick. But he's shown such maturity and has done
- 5:22Speaker 2: a really good job bearing back down and putting up
- 5:24Speaker 2: some of your more zeros in these last couple outings.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah, we haven't heard exactly when Helsley is coming back.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Sorry to jump over you too, I said, we haven't
- 5:33Speaker 1: heard when Elsy's coming back, But they're saving the games
- 5:38Speaker 1: when presented now. In this last stretch, they get swept
- 5:41Speaker 1: in New York they lose too to the Athletics. They
- 5:44Speaker 1: weren't saves, but so almost more critical to not let
- 5:48Speaker 1: them get away when you have so few and so
- 5:50Speaker 1: without Helsley knock on wood, not much longer they've held
- 5:54Speaker 1: their own here.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think two.
- 5:58Speaker 2: When you think about Hellsley coming back, think about the
- 6:01Speaker 2: experience Rico Garcia is getting at the closing role. You
- 6:03Speaker 2: saw him into the eighth inning. Nunia shuffles down to
- 6:06Speaker 2: the seventh where they want to use Wolfram. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: n s said they have options there in the seventh inning,
- 6:11Speaker 2: which is always a beautiful thing to have when you can,
- 6:13Speaker 2: when you can really start to extend these bullpens and
- 6:16Speaker 2: make it sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth without a doubt, you
- 6:19Speaker 2: know who you're going to. It makes games way easier.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It takes a pressure off the starters, takes a pressure
- 6:24Speaker 2: off the offense. And that was a lot of teams
- 6:26Speaker 2: I was a part of. You basically shot in the
- 6:28Speaker 2: games almost five six innings, and it was you knew
- 6:30Speaker 2: if we had the lead come that time, the game
- 6:32Speaker 2: was over. And I truly feel this Orioles team can
- 6:35Speaker 2: be that way with how many guys are having the bullpen,
- 6:38Speaker 2: and that's not including Kittridge, which you know is gonna
- 6:40Speaker 2: come back.
- 6:41Speaker 3: He's gonna get better.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You have all these other arms that they have akens
- 6:44Speaker 2: they have these guys that can go out there and
- 6:46Speaker 2: get outs late in the game, and if they really
- 6:48Speaker 2: can get these leads or I really truly believe this
- 6:51Speaker 2: bullpen can be a lockdown bullpen and such a strength
- 6:53Speaker 2: of this team towards the end of the season.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, how can you not feel great about
- 6:57Speaker 5: Rico Garcia right now, every single time he goes out there,
- 7:00Speaker 5: you just expect him to put up a zero and that.
- 7:02Speaker 4: That's what he did.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Like, even depending on how long you know Hellsley is
- 7:08Speaker 5: going to be out, you still feel really really good
- 7:11Speaker 5: about Rico Garcia closing out ball games. But Brett, I
- 7:15Speaker 5: wanted to ask you going back to Nunez real quick
- 7:19Speaker 5: the mound visit with true French and he came in
- 7:23Speaker 5: and it was first and second at that time, I
- 7:25Speaker 5: think it was only one out. What can that do
- 7:29Speaker 5: for a reliever, and in particular a young guy like
- 7:32Speaker 5: in Anthony Nuniez.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think a lot of times in the minor
- 7:35Speaker 2: leagues you kind of things you did. Good stuff just
- 7:39Speaker 2: comes and you'll get in and out of funks eight
- 7:41Speaker 2: to ten pitches and it's not as big a deal.
- 7:43Speaker 2: In the minor leagues. He has good enough stuff. Guys
- 7:45Speaker 2: are going to swing and missus stuff out of his own.
- 7:47Speaker 2: But I think Drew French coming out there is just
- 7:49Speaker 2: kind of hey, you're rushing.
- 7:50Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 7:51Speaker 2: It could be there's probably a key phrase he has
- 7:53Speaker 2: for Nunyaz. A lot of times pitching coaches just have
- 7:55Speaker 2: a key phraser a couple of words they say to
- 7:57Speaker 2: get you locked back in, and I think that's exactly
- 7:59Speaker 2: what happen. I think Drew French just came out the
- 8:01Speaker 2: perfect time. Hey man, you're rushing here. You got good
- 8:04Speaker 2: enough stuff. Stop trying to dance around the zone. Go
- 8:06Speaker 2: at these guys. Whatever the case may be. Whatever he
- 8:08Speaker 2: said to him, obviously it worked. And I think a
- 8:10Speaker 2: lot of times with the young relievers, you need to
- 8:12Speaker 2: hear that. You need to hear that. Oh man, like
- 8:14Speaker 2: he probably in his mind it's probably racing, like, oh gosh,
- 8:17Speaker 2: now I have first and second here. Now I got
- 8:18Speaker 2: to get this out. Pitching coach comes out, makes a
- 8:21Speaker 2: couple smart choice of words, and you're just back into
- 8:24Speaker 2: making pitches again. And that's really all it comes down
- 8:26Speaker 2: to it. It's not really rocket science. It just sometimes
- 8:29Speaker 2: it's getting back to neutral and just going back out
- 8:31Speaker 2: there and doing what you do best.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So the Orioles did win. They help wanted to win
- 8:38Speaker 1: two to one today, and all these records they improved
- 8:40Speaker 1: by one win today. Need to get dramatically better. Home
- 8:43Speaker 1: record now ten and eleven. May record is three and seven.
- 8:48Speaker 1: One run game record is three and six. All these
- 8:52Speaker 1: need to get dramatically better. We know that about the
- 8:55Speaker 1: twenty twenty six Birds. We got a lot of good
- 8:57Speaker 1: topics to check in on today as we roll along
- 9:01Speaker 1: on Birdland territory.

- 10:13Speaker 1: I think we're up to sixteen now, Tim, you were
- 10:15Speaker 1: noting this morning the upcoming schedule, it's going to be
- 10:18Speaker 1: challenging for the Orioles. It's going to be heavy al East,
- 10:22Speaker 1: six of the next eight series in the division.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a make or break time for this
- 10:29Speaker 4: ball club. It really is.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Where you're five games below five hundred right now, and Brad,
- 10:35Speaker 5: you've kind of brought up that mark a couple times
- 10:38Speaker 5: during these episodes where you don't want to get to
- 10:41Speaker 5: the seven eight because that's when things can really start
- 10:43Speaker 5: to snowball. Where it's already a big test, you know,
- 10:47Speaker 5: beginning tomorrow with the Yankees coming to town. And it's
- 10:51Speaker 5: a little unique in the fact that you just played
- 10:53Speaker 5: this team a week ago and we know how poorly
- 10:55Speaker 5: it went. This Orioles team, they're going to have to
- 10:58Speaker 5: bear down because the Yankees, of course, they're the best
- 11:01Speaker 5: team in the American League. The Rays have gotten off
- 11:03Speaker 5: to a red hot start and the Blue Jays and
- 11:06Speaker 5: Red Sox. You know that they're trying to stay in
- 11:09Speaker 5: the mix as well.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and it is weird playing them.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I never understood when I was playing why they put
- 11:16Speaker 2: the schedule this way, where you play a team four games,
- 11:19Speaker 2: you don't play for a couple games, and then you
- 11:21Speaker 2: play them again the next week, when you have six
- 11:23Speaker 2: months of a schedule.
- 11:24Speaker 3: But it is a unique thing.
- 11:25Speaker 2: But the best part is that I don't think many
- 11:27Speaker 2: guys are gonna thinking about last week. I think they've
- 11:30Speaker 2: had two series in between, so it's not not like
- 11:32Speaker 2: it was just yesterday they played the series. But it's
- 11:35Speaker 2: one of those things where they get a chance to
- 11:36Speaker 2: go back out and play the one of the best
- 11:38Speaker 2: teams in baseball again, and I think it's an opportunity
- 11:40Speaker 2: at home to do it and just go out there
- 11:42Speaker 2: and do a better job than they did last week.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I think they know they did not play their best baseball.
- 11:46Speaker 2: And like you're saying, with this schedule coming up here,
- 11:50Speaker 2: I know I had been talking about that. It's still
- 11:52Speaker 2: super early and I don't think anybody's worrying too much.
- 11:54Speaker 2: But with that, I looked at the schedule earlier today
- 11:56Speaker 2: and I'm thinking these next thirty thirty five games, this
- 12:00Speaker 2: is gonna be where the twenty twenty six.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Oriols are made or made or broke.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And I it's just against some really good competition, a
- 12:07Speaker 2: lot of teams in the division. And when you start
- 12:09Speaker 2: looking where you fall seven, eight, ten games behind five hundred,
- 12:13Speaker 2: now you've got to pay fifteen twenty games above five
- 12:15Speaker 2: hundred the rest of the season in order to get
- 12:17Speaker 2: to that, you know, that magic playoff number, and that
- 12:20Speaker 2: just becomes a big burden. That's a lot of games
- 12:22Speaker 2: over five hundred to get to get going. And it's
- 12:25Speaker 2: against some good teams here. So it's it's I know
- 12:27Speaker 2: it's early, and I know it's only the second week
- 12:29Speaker 2: of May, but it's it just feels a lot bigger
- 12:31Speaker 2: than it did even just ten days ago because they
- 12:34Speaker 2: kind of didn't.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Take care of business there.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So now you're sitting at that five six games under
- 12:38Speaker 2: five hundred, and now you just have this beast of
- 12:40Speaker 2: a schedule coming up. So it's going to be interesting
- 12:42Speaker 2: how these next few weeks play out.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So the next few series three against the Yankees at home,
- 12:49Speaker 1: three at Washington, three at Tampa home against Detroit, Tampa,
- 12:54Speaker 1: Toronto at Boston and Toronto. That's nineteen and the next
- 12:58Speaker 1: twenty five. Hey, at least by the way, dude was
- 13:00Speaker 1: just checking the phone as we take this. The Brewers
- 13:03Speaker 1: have beaten the Yankees. They swept the Yankees, who were
- 13:05Speaker 1: two and four since the Orioles left town. They beat
- 13:10Speaker 1: the Rangers, they got swept by the Brewers. So I
- 13:13Speaker 1: don't know what that means in this series. What do
- 13:15Speaker 1: you guys think when a team has drilled the other
- 13:17Speaker 1: so badly as the Yankees did, Is that some psychological
- 13:22Speaker 1: edge they hold or is that gone a week later?
- 13:25Speaker 2: I think I don't think it matters as much, But
- 13:28Speaker 2: I honestly think I think the sweep before matters more
- 13:30Speaker 2: than then sweeping the Oriols last week. I think when
- 13:33Speaker 2: you come in kind of sputtering, and you know, anytime
- 13:37Speaker 2: you face Milwaukee, it's a good pitching staff. They're kind
- 13:39Speaker 2: of very similar to when the Ools face Cleveland. It's
- 13:41Speaker 2: just they do the little things right. They pitch really well.
- 13:44Speaker 2: So it's a definitely a different series. But I think
- 13:47Speaker 2: it's a good time to get them while they're down,
- 13:49Speaker 2: while they're kind of struggling just a little bit here,
- 13:51Speaker 2: you can kind of hopefully get two out of three
- 13:53Speaker 2: at home and start feel a little bit better about
- 13:55Speaker 2: where you've been the last couple of weeks and can't
- 13:58Speaker 2: worry about what happened in the past. You just got
- 13:59Speaker 2: to go out to get that first win of the
- 14:01Speaker 2: series and see what happens from there.
- 14:04Speaker 5: It's sort of like I was saying heading into the
- 14:07Speaker 5: Yankee Series last week, where this is another measuring stick,
- 14:10Speaker 5: like if you can somehow win this series after it
- 14:14Speaker 5: just went as poorly as you could possibly go this
- 14:17Speaker 5: prior week in the Bronx, I think that maybe that
- 14:20Speaker 5: could do wonders for this ball club and say, hey,
- 14:23Speaker 5: you know, you find a way to take this. They're
- 14:25Speaker 5: the best team in the American League, Like we're going
- 14:27Speaker 5: toe to toe with them after what happened last week.
- 14:30Speaker 5: My concern with this series, Steve is and this has
- 14:35Speaker 5: been an issue.
- 14:35Speaker 4: For this ball club all year long.
- 14:38Speaker 5: You'd like to see them get up early in these
- 14:40Speaker 5: games because if you get down and then you know,
- 14:44Speaker 5: it just becomes human nature, like, oh my gosh, here
- 14:46Speaker 5: we go again.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Are we going to get thumped again.
- 14:48Speaker 5: I think it's so important for the a the starting
- 14:52Speaker 5: pitching to do their best and maybe we see Trevor Rodgers.
- 14:55Speaker 5: It seems likely at some point this series, maybe even tomorrow,
- 15:00Speaker 5: he'll get the start. But this lineup, you know, and
- 15:03Speaker 5: looking at the studs, you know, Pete Alonzo was fantastic
- 15:07Speaker 5: last week against the Bronx. You'd like to see him
- 15:09Speaker 5: have another Monster series. Gunner Adlee Basile. All of these guys,
- 15:14Speaker 5: your stars have to be stars to win this series, right.
- 15:19Speaker 1: We talked about that before this series and the Bronx,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and really only Alonso stood forward. The stats stand out
- 15:25Speaker 1: so blatantly from that series and runners in scoring position,
- 15:29Speaker 1: the Yankees had four seventy. The Orioles were four for
- 15:32Speaker 1: twenty seven pitching rotation era in the series. In the
- 15:37Speaker 1: Bronx Yankees to forty two, Orioles eight eighty four. Now,
- 15:43Speaker 1: if Brandon Young does go Monday or even Tuesday, he
- 15:45Speaker 1: didn't pitch in that series, Jovich has probably lined up,
- 15:48Speaker 1: and maybe Rogers. So it really it looks like two
- 15:51Speaker 1: of the young guys are gonna get thrown into the
- 15:53Speaker 1: fire here. And of course the Oriols will face two
- 15:55Speaker 1: lefties in this series. Weather's Monday and Freed Wednesday and
- 16:00Speaker 1: Zho nine when facing a left standed starter, So there
- 16:03Speaker 1: are some bugaboos they got to wash away here the
- 16:06Speaker 1: next couple of nights.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and a what a prop octunity to do it
- 16:10Speaker 2: other than against the Yankees.
- 16:11Speaker 3: That's the only kind of way you can look at.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You got to you gotta be willing to accept challenges
- 16:15Speaker 2: at the major league level, and that's that's what it is.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It's going to be a challenge, and they just got
- 16:19Speaker 2: to go out there and meet meet the task. I think,
- 16:21Speaker 2: like Tim, like you said, I think get off to
- 16:23Speaker 2: a great start is such a big advantage. I don't
- 16:24Speaker 2: know what it felt like today, but that one, two
- 16:26Speaker 2: three first inning, I feel like it was the first
- 16:29Speaker 2: non competitive offensive inning from the opponent.
- 16:33Speaker 3: They've had in a long time.
- 16:34Speaker 2: It seems like it's just been just just to get
- 16:37Speaker 2: those first three outs in that first inning. It's been
- 16:39Speaker 2: such a struggle, and I think having the opener go
- 16:42Speaker 2: out there today, and I'm not the biggest fan of
- 16:44Speaker 2: the opener, but I understood why they did it today.
- 16:46Speaker 3: It's I just never, I never.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I think I've heard the explanation behind it, and I
- 16:52Speaker 2: heard it's like, basically, the first inning is like a
- 16:54Speaker 2: seventh inning leverage spot, So why not put your seventh
- 16:56Speaker 2: thing leverage spot. It's just if it doesn't work out
- 16:59Speaker 2: and it doesn't go well, it's now you put yourself
- 17:02Speaker 2: so far behind the eight ball. You have these starters
- 17:04Speaker 2: for a reason. So but today it worked out great.
- 17:06Speaker 2: So that's that's the way to look at it. And uh,
- 17:08Speaker 2: I just think that one two three inning today is
- 17:10Speaker 2: such a clean inning. It just really kind of seemed
- 17:12Speaker 2: to jumpstart the game. These last couple of games, it
- 17:15Speaker 2: feels like it's been taking a while to get that
- 17:18Speaker 2: first three outs and it's taking twenty five pitches to
- 17:20Speaker 2: get at the first inning, and today was ban one
- 17:22Speaker 2: two three offense going in and hit. I know they
- 17:24Speaker 2: didn't do much in that first inning offensively, but you
- 17:26Speaker 2: got the ball rolling and got into the games as
- 17:28Speaker 2: opposed to being down or having to struggle through that
- 17:30Speaker 2: first inning.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Yeah, Brett, I was gonna ask you about that. And
- 17:35Speaker 4: Keegan ankin that.
- 17:36Speaker 5: I think he was used as an opener three times
- 17:38Speaker 5: last year and he was very effective in that role.
- 17:41Speaker 5: I do wonder just given how great he was today, like,
- 17:45Speaker 5: do we see that again in particular in this upcoming stretch.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I think it's a possibility.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think with the explanation they have with
- 17:54Speaker 2: Bassett and a guy who's pitched out of the bullpen before,
- 17:57Speaker 2: like they were talking about in the broadcast during the playoff,
- 18:00Speaker 2: he was phenomenal at the bullpen, so he's not used
- 18:02Speaker 2: to something like that, and him just kind of being like, hey,
- 18:04Speaker 2: whatever helps the team. I wouldn't be surprised if they
- 18:07Speaker 2: did it again, if the bullpen lines up and they
- 18:10Speaker 2: can use them, if they wouldn't start him again, because
- 18:12Speaker 2: obviously it seems this scene teams are starting to stack
- 18:15Speaker 2: lefties against Bassett to try to get to them early,
- 18:18Speaker 2: and if you can take those top three or four
- 18:19Speaker 2: hitters out of there one time, it makes sense.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I understand the reasoning behind it.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I just never was a big fan when I was
- 18:25Speaker 2: doing it because a lot of times it was never us,
- 18:27Speaker 2: it was always somebody else, and I just thought it
- 18:29Speaker 2: was a weird way to start the game. But it's
- 18:30Speaker 2: obviously not taboo anymore, and a lot of teams do it,
- 18:33Speaker 2: and the explanation and the reasoning behind it does make
- 18:36Speaker 2: a lot of sense.
- 18:38Speaker 1: We got some interesting topics to get into on the
- 18:40Speaker 1: other side of this time out Gunner Henderson when I
- 18:44Speaker 1: talked to him this weekend one on one. He threw
- 18:46Speaker 1: himself under the bus and I respected him for that.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I'll tell you why in a minute. Jackson Holliday played
- 18:52Speaker 1: third base today on this rehab at DOUBLEA. What did
- 18:56Speaker 1: that mean. We're going to get into all that coming
- 18:57Speaker 1: up here in a moment.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Let's talk love life ft family. I know it's an

- 20:00Speaker 1: I do think times when players point the finger at themselves,
- 20:04Speaker 1: the fans appreciate it generally. Friday in Baltimore, Gunner did
- 20:09Speaker 1: that before the game and after the game. During the game,
- 20:13Speaker 1: he botched a double playgrounder and he took the fall
- 20:15Speaker 1: for that postgame pregame, when I asked him about his offense,
- 20:19Speaker 1: he said, I've been pretty terrible for a month. I'm
- 20:21Speaker 1: trying to do too much. And then he said, the
- 20:24Speaker 1: game in Miami, the last one, I saw the ball
- 20:27Speaker 1: so much better. I feel like I'm suddenly tracking it.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And then he went out Friday night, guys didn't get
- 20:32Speaker 1: a hit, but in four played appearances, saw twenty six pitches.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I watched everyone, and I said, he is seeing it better.
- 20:41Speaker 1: The hits are gonna come. Then he got two, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: then he got two more, and he struck out with
- 20:45Speaker 1: the bases loaded today. But I'm telling you, I'll eat
- 20:49Speaker 1: these words. Maybe if I'm wrong. He's ready to get going.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Did you guys like some of his weekend comments.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's great. I think it's great. I
- 20:59Speaker 2: think it shows leadership. I think it shows accountability, and
- 21:02Speaker 2: I think he knows and everybody knows. There's no hiding it.
- 21:05Speaker 2: When you're one of the faces of a team like
- 21:08Speaker 2: the Orioles, and Gunnar Henderson is right at the head
- 21:10Speaker 2: of those faces.
- 21:12Speaker 3: He knows what's expected of him.
- 21:13Speaker 2: And I think just being able to go out there
- 21:16Speaker 2: and kind of I think sometimes when you just go
- 21:18Speaker 2: out there and you say it and you just kind
- 21:20Speaker 2: of know everybody, he knows what everybody's thinking. He kind
- 21:23Speaker 2: of just says it himself. I think it takes some
- 21:25Speaker 2: of the pressure off. And I think, like you said,
- 21:27Speaker 2: just seeing the ball a little bit better, and I
- 21:29Speaker 2: think it's better. I think when he comes up in
- 21:31Speaker 2: these bigger spots and gets that one big hit, I
- 21:33Speaker 2: think it's just going to kind of rush out from
- 21:34Speaker 2: there and he's going to go on a tear.
- 21:36Speaker 3: I think it just takes out one big.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Hit sometimes to kind of just spring the dam open
- 21:40Speaker 2: and kind of just let yourself go out there and
- 21:42Speaker 2: forget about everything else, just be the player you are
- 21:45Speaker 2: and go out there and do what you're able to do.
- 21:47Speaker 5: I think it's exactly that, Brad, and that's why I
- 21:50Speaker 5: was rooting, like Kech for him to come through with
- 21:52Speaker 5: that basis loaded situation, but he didn't. He ended up
- 21:55Speaker 5: striking out on three pitches. I think with Gunner it
- 21:59Speaker 5: just seems like he's always behind in the count, guys,
- 22:02Speaker 5: and when Gunner gets the two strikes, obviously with the
- 22:07Speaker 5: alarming strikeout numbers, he just hasn't been good enough this year.
- 22:10Speaker 5: I think he's only got two hits with two strikes.
- 22:13Speaker 5: He's batting eighty one when he has two strikes in
- 22:16Speaker 5: the count. But I think he puts a lot of
- 22:19Speaker 5: pressure on himself. I think, you know, he obviously wants
- 22:22Speaker 5: to succeed. He knows what he means to this team,
- 22:25Speaker 5: to this organization and to the city. And I think
- 22:29Speaker 5: he's crushed that he hasn't gotten off to the start
- 22:32Speaker 5: that he had hoped for.
- 22:34Speaker 4: But I'm with you, Steve.
- 22:35Speaker 5: I think you're already starting to see a different approach
- 22:38Speaker 5: for Gunner Henderson and you know, just get on base man,
- 22:41Speaker 5: because what he can do as a base runner. You know,
- 22:44Speaker 5: he's so athletic and he's so quick. He can wreak
- 22:48Speaker 5: havoc just on the base paths.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I better be that kid. Too many times to count,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I don't even know. It's in the hundreds somewhere since
- 22:56Speaker 1: Minor Lakes. And he looked confident Friday for a hitter
- 23:02Speaker 1: with a two one batting average on a two undred
- 23:04Speaker 1: trick out paced. Not that he doesn't care or he's
- 23:06Speaker 1: blowing off his struggles, the opposite is true. But I
- 23:09Speaker 1: think in his mind he knew I've unlocked something. I
- 23:13Speaker 1: made some adjustment to coaches that's going to start to work.
- 23:17Speaker 1: And that's the confidence I felt for him. I think
- 23:19Speaker 1: we're going to see it.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that's awesome. Was that's great to hear.
- 23:23Speaker 2: And I think he knows how talented he is and
- 23:26Speaker 2: that like he all takes his one or two games
- 23:28Speaker 2: and it's just he can.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Go on fire.
- 23:30Speaker 2: And he's one of the few players in the game,
- 23:31Speaker 2: you know, probably top fifty players in the game that
- 23:34Speaker 2: have that confidence and that ability to just turn it
- 23:36Speaker 2: on and get hot, hotter than anybody on the face
- 23:39Speaker 2: of the earth. So it's it's it's a unique talent.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And I'm glad to hear he's feeling a little bit
- 23:44Speaker 2: more confident, and I'm just I'm confident the results are
- 23:47Speaker 2: going to come.
- 23:47Speaker 3: He's too good to a player for it to continue
- 23:49Speaker 3: at this at this rate.
- 23:51Speaker 5: And it's sort of like we were talking about last episode, guys,
- 23:54Speaker 5: pictures are making adjustments to him. You know, you're seeing
- 23:57Speaker 5: far less fastballs thrown his way. And you know, I know,
- 24:01Speaker 5: I texted you the graphic from the other day, Brad.
- 24:05Speaker 4: The fact that pitchers they're just pitching.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Him inside right now, man like like, and it's kind
- 24:10Speaker 5: of making the adjustment to those that pitch location.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yeah one A lot of times, like I said, when
- 24:17Speaker 2: for lefty hitters, a lot of times, that's kind of
- 24:19Speaker 2: their honey hoole. You throw it there, I'm going to
- 24:20Speaker 2: hit it. When you're not getting to that pitch makes
- 24:23Speaker 2: it really difficult. So you know that that's open. You
- 24:25Speaker 2: can start away. He's not willing to hit the ball away,
- 24:28Speaker 2: you can come inside and get you out. And it
- 24:30Speaker 2: makes it makes pitching kind of a one oh one
- 24:33Speaker 2: kind of thing. It's start away, pitch him in the finish,
- 24:36Speaker 2: and if you can't make that adjustment, they're just going
- 24:38Speaker 2: to keep going to that over and over again.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Gunner has an interesting theory on that, and this was
- 24:45Speaker 1: after our interviews, so I'd include the quach. It was
- 24:47Speaker 1: just kind of us talking he I'm paraphrasing again. Last
- 24:52Speaker 1: year when his shoulder was hurting and he couldn't lift
- 24:55Speaker 1: the ball, they were pounding them with more fastballs. They
- 24:58Speaker 1: knew he couldn't hit home runs like he did the
- 25:01Speaker 1: year before when he hit thirty seven and he hit seventeen.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So now they know the shoulders back, he can hit
- 25:08Speaker 1: home runs, and all of a sudden, the fastball percentage
- 25:11Speaker 1: dropped because they're just not you know, they're just not
- 25:13Speaker 1: going to challenge this guy as much as they did
- 25:16Speaker 1: last year. That made sense to me, So we'll see
- 25:18Speaker 1: how the pitch mix for him plays out the rest
- 25:22Speaker 1: of the way. And the rest of the way on
- 25:24Speaker 1: this show, I want to get into Jackson Holiday and
- 25:26Speaker 1: talk about him getting this at least some look at
- 25:29Speaker 1: third base. Let's put it that way, and we'll touch
- 25:32Speaker 1: on that coming up on Birdland Territory.
- 25:36Speaker 7: Big Bad Morning Show, Finnie and Hani Inside Access Live
- 25:41Speaker 7: on YouTube weekdays six.
- 25:42Speaker 4: Till six, Search Baltimore one O five seven the Fan.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Subscribe for daily Short's right to your phone and never
- 25:48Speaker 5: miss what you missed one O five seven the fan.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Well, the Oriols hope to get Jackson Holiday back soon.
- 25:56Speaker 1: It looks like he played today at double A and
- 25:59Speaker 1: I have the final report, and I don't know how
- 26:01Speaker 1: many plays he made in the field. He did start
- 26:03Speaker 1: at third base, played about half the game as he's
- 26:06Speaker 1: working his way back, So his return is not imminent,
- 26:09Speaker 1: but it's much closer. So what do you guys make
- 26:12Speaker 1: of him getting a look put quotes around that at
- 26:15Speaker 1: third base? Is this something to solve the picture short
- 26:19Speaker 1: term for the Orioles? Is it? You know? What do
- 26:22Speaker 1: you what do you make of it?
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yeah? To me, it kind of seems maybe a twofold thing.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Maybe it's trying to make him a verstyle where he
- 26:29Speaker 2: can play second or third, or maybe they just really
- 26:31Speaker 2: like the way Jeremont Jackson's playing right now and they
- 26:34Speaker 2: figure their biggest hole is kind of at third base
- 26:36Speaker 2: with Mao just kind of not really giving them what
- 26:39Speaker 2: they need there offensively, and you know Wes and Wilson.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Wes Wilson is he's a good filling there when he's
- 26:45Speaker 2: facing lefties, but it's it's not a permanent thing. So
- 26:49Speaker 2: maybe they think playing him at third base is going
- 26:51Speaker 2: to be the option. Obviously, you guys know, you have
- 26:53Speaker 2: more of a history, so you would know. And I
- 26:54Speaker 2: haven't really had a chance to see Jackson holl To
- 26:56Speaker 2: play that much, but just knowing from the passive hearing
- 26:59Speaker 2: guys going down and trying different positions. Maybe it's a
- 27:02Speaker 2: versatility thing, but you guys obviously have more of a
- 27:04Speaker 2: history with that.
- 27:06Speaker 5: I was very surprised when I heard that they were
- 27:09Speaker 5: going to do this.
- 27:11Speaker 4: I get it on the.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Surface, and I think, unfortunately this is kind of even
- 27:16Speaker 5: another step in the direction where Jordan Westburg we just
- 27:20Speaker 5: may not see him this year.
- 27:22Speaker 4: I know he has another check up tomorrow, I.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Believe, and maybe there's more clarity on his status. But
- 27:29Speaker 5: you know, this kind of seems like another sign where
- 27:32Speaker 5: they're just trying to find a way. But I just
- 27:35Speaker 5: don't really get it. You know, Jackson Holiday second base,
- 27:40Speaker 5: He's only been playing second base for a couple of
- 27:42Speaker 5: years at this point, that's still a relatively new position.
- 27:46Speaker 5: We know that this is his third rehab assignment at
- 27:49Speaker 5: this point. I just think I would like to see
- 27:53Speaker 5: Jackson Holiday be the most comfortable that he could be,
- 27:58Speaker 5: And I just don't know if now is the right
- 28:01Speaker 5: time to experiment with him at third base. When he's
- 28:05Speaker 5: played I think all of two games in his professional.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Career at at third base. I just don't really understand it,
- 28:15Speaker 4: to be honest.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Here's how I see it. And Albert As said the
- 28:20Speaker 1: other day, he's a second baseman and we're going to
- 28:22Speaker 1: take a look, so they know they've got a problem
- 28:25Speaker 1: at third base. Why not at least take a look
- 28:27Speaker 1: and don't roll it in or out, but just start
- 28:30Speaker 1: to get some data on it. Can he do it?
- 28:33Speaker 1: What's it look like? He was very much up for it.
- 28:36Speaker 1: To me, people knock his arm strength and the metrics.
- 28:39Speaker 1: When you play second base and you're not cutting the
- 28:42Speaker 1: ball loose can sometimes look not great on your arm
- 28:45Speaker 1: strength because you don't have to cut the ball loose
- 28:47Speaker 1: on some of those flips to first. I'm not saying
- 28:49Speaker 1: he's got a plus arm or a gunner arm, nothing
- 28:52Speaker 1: like that, but I think it's average ish and I
- 28:55Speaker 1: think it could handle third in a short term. I
- 28:57Speaker 1: don't know if you can play it long term. I've
- 28:59Speaker 1: seen him play the heck out of shortstop in the minors. Again,
- 29:02Speaker 1: not the gunners level. That's why gunners are shortstop. I'm
- 29:06Speaker 1: a big believer in the skin, as you can tell.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I think it's worth at least looking at him and
- 29:11Speaker 1: then maybe they watch him for a few games and go,
- 29:14Speaker 1: maybe this isn't the right play here.
- 29:16Speaker 5: Oh and Steve, I'm a Jackson Holiday fan as well,
- 29:20Speaker 5: and I just ultimately want what's best for him. And
- 29:24Speaker 5: clearly this has been a frustrating situation him coming back
- 29:28Speaker 5: from the Hama bone surgery, and ultimately you just want
- 29:32Speaker 5: to see him comfortable and you want to see him
- 29:36Speaker 5: get used to, you know, the swinging a bat like
- 29:39Speaker 5: I he thought he broke his hand again the last
- 29:41Speaker 5: time and that's what stopped him there. I just wonder
- 29:44Speaker 5: the timing of this right now, with him yet to
- 29:49Speaker 5: debut this season with the O's We'll see. I get
- 29:53Speaker 5: it on the surface, but I just wonder the timing
- 29:57Speaker 5: of it.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Well. I think the time of it is to have
- 30:00Speaker 1: a crisis at that position. I mean, you know, we
- 30:04Speaker 1: all support Kobe Mayo and appreciate his hard work, and
- 30:08Speaker 1: but it's just been a really, really problem position for
- 30:11Speaker 1: him right now. So I don't know if he'll ever
- 30:15Speaker 1: play third in the majors. I think it's Okay to
- 30:17Speaker 1: take a look at it on the farm here right now.
- 30:20Speaker 1: But you're right, they're throwing a lot at that kid.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Got it. He's got an injury. He's got to get back.
- 30:25Speaker 1: He's never really consistently hit the major league level. And
- 30:28Speaker 1: so Brad, he's been a great guy to deal with
- 30:31Speaker 1: when you're a one to one pick. What a fishball
- 30:33Speaker 1: he's been in. And here's another thing, so I can
- 30:37Speaker 1: see Tim's point greatly that, man, how much are you
- 30:39Speaker 1: gonna put on this kid at one point? But I'm
- 30:42Speaker 1: going to say this and again in order I might
- 30:44Speaker 1: have to eat. I just think he can handle it,
- 30:48Speaker 1: and he will emerge looking good. It may not be
- 30:51Speaker 1: in the next few weeks, but maybe in the next
- 30:52Speaker 1: few months.
- 30:54Speaker 7: You know.
- 30:54Speaker 2: The thing is too I've seen I've seen him obviously,
- 30:56Speaker 2: you know, you see him as a number one pick,
- 30:58Speaker 2: and man, the difference of when he got picked there
- 31:01Speaker 2: to now, just his body and how he's matured and
- 31:04Speaker 2: how he's gotten bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if he can,
- 31:07Speaker 2: if he's going to start hitting for more power and
- 31:08Speaker 2: has a stronger arm and all. You just never know
- 31:11Speaker 2: with a one one pick, those are just such unicorns.
- 31:14Speaker 2: I wouldn't put anything by them, So I'm hoping. I'm
- 31:16Speaker 2: hoping he can handle third.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I can hope.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I hope he hits thirty home runs when he comes back,
- 31:20Speaker 2: because oil fans deserve it.
- 31:22Speaker 3: And it's been it's been fun following him.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Like I said, I haven't got to see him play
- 31:25Speaker 2: a ton, but just watching the difference of his body
- 31:28Speaker 2: from when I saw him at one one, seeing.
- 31:30Speaker 3: How big his dad was when I faced his dad.
- 31:32Speaker 2: In New York, and uh, there's a lot of room
- 31:35Speaker 2: for growth there, So I wouldn't put anything by a
- 31:37Speaker 2: kid like that.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Well, this week can safely say there are no shortage
- 31:43Speaker 1: of interesting topics to discuss in Birdland these days, whether
- 31:47Speaker 1: the team is winning or losing or whatever. Man, there's
- 31:50Speaker 1: a lot going on, and so that's good for a
- 31:52Speaker 1: show like ours because we got a lot of shows
- 31:54Speaker 1: and we're able to fill it with a lot of
- 31:55Speaker 1: interesting stuff. So, uh, guys, appreciate this one. We will
- 31:59Speaker 1: reconvene in a few days and let's see how it goes.
- 32:02Speaker 1: The Bronze Bombers are coming to Birdland, so it's gonna
- 32:04Speaker 1: be an interesting next few nights. Thanks to everybody for
- 32:08Speaker 1: watching today, and we'll see you next time with another
- 32:11Speaker 1: birdland territory.
