- 0:00Melinda Lee: This day, we're going to talk about an important
- 0:04aspect of influence. And that is deep listening. I have a
- 0:09question for you, when you are about to meet with someone
- 0:13interact or communicate with somebody, are you seeking
- 0:17certainty, or clarity. And in order to illustrate these
- 0:22concepts, I'm going to tell you a story what happened over the
- 0:26weekend, I was at a baby shower and sitting on the couch
- 0:30admiring the decorations, the balloons, the flowers, and then
- 0:35my old client who happened to be there sat on the couch next to
- 0:39me. And because we know each other very well, she starts
- 0:41talking to me about her husband and says, Melinda, you know, my
- 0:46husband has ADHD, he I not mad at him for having it, he cannot
- 0:52help but have it yet, I am so frustrated and tired, because
- 0:57he's not doing anything about it. He's not reading up on it,
- 1:01he's not learning about it to help himself. And so I'm doing
- 1:05so much I send him YouTube videos, or or give him an
- 1:08article or a book. And yet, he just doesn't do anything. And so
- 1:13it's quite frustrating for me, and I just don't know what to
- 1:15do. So I turned around and asked her, I said, What do you think
- 1:21he thinks about this? Like, when you look at him, is he happy in
- 1:25his life? And she just looked back at me with this really
- 1:29blank stare. I haven't never asked, I don't know what he
- 1:34thinks about it. I don't know if he's happy? That's a good
- 1:39question. That's a great point. And so I want to ask you, are
- 1:46you seeking certainty or clarity? In that interaction,
- 1:51she was seeking certainty, and clarifying in understanding her
- 1:56own assumptions, or forging her own assumptions. So let me
- 1:59explain a little bit more the difference between certainty and
- 2:02clarity. Certainty is when we validate our own assumptions
- 2:08with certainty is like, we want to know that we are right, or we
- 2:12want to know we're what's about to happen is what we assume
- 2:16that's about to happen. So we're constantly seeking certainty
- 2:19because our brain loves it, it helps us feel safe, it helps us
- 2:24feel like we know. And so for her, she was so certain, my
- 2:28client was so certain that she had all the solutions, she had
- 2:31all the answers. So she was trying to clarify her own
- 2:35assumptions. And so this is happening all the time. And it's
- 2:39not just her, we as people, as humans have biases. And we're
- 2:43constantly seeking certainty to clarify our own biases, you
- 2:48might see somebody walking down the street, and they're dressed
- 2:51really nicely. And you might want to assume or infer that
- 2:56this person has a nice job, they're responsible, or you're
- 2:59about to go into a meeting. And this is a high person, that's
- 3:04authority of you. And you may have had a bad interaction with
- 3:07this person of authority. And so in your mind, your brain is
- 3:11going to prepare you and assume that this might happen again,
- 3:15because it just wants to feel certain. And it wants to know
- 3:18and be prepared. If it's an unknown, it just wants to be
- 3:21prepared. And so we're boring, our brain is doing that. But
- 3:25what happens when we're constantly doing that is that we
- 3:29start to bring in our own assumptions into the reality,
- 3:34what we think is a reality. And it might not be the other
- 3:37person's reality. And it might not be with the other person
- 3:40where that person is at. And so there's a disconnect between the
- 3:44person that person reality and my reality. So we want to move
- 3:49more into clarity and seeking clarity in our own in the other
- 3:55person's world has nothing to do with us now. So we are moving
- 3:59into the other person's world and asking genuine questions,
- 4:04seeking clarity about where the other person's at, in my case
- 4:07with that my client, she couldn't ask genuine questions
- 4:11about where her husband is at today. And I'm saying today,
- 4:16because people change, I change. And so you change. And so we
- 4:20always want to see clarity of where the person is at today.
- 4:24What is motivating them today? What are they feeling today? Do
- 4:27they feel that they even have a problem to be solved? And so
- 4:31asking genuine questions, if you want to influence your team
- 4:35member, you want to ask genuine questions, what might be holding
- 4:39them back? What they might be resisting, they're playing a
- 4:43story in their head of why they're resisting or why they
- 4:47don't want to do what they do. And so it's your job to see and
- 4:51understand that story and draw it out from them. And if you've
- 4:57done it correctly, they will tell you that That means that
- 5:00you are connected to them. And that is your whole goal is to
- 5:04listen deeply without judging. And if they don't feel judged,
- 5:08if they don't feel evaluated, then they're going to tell you
- 5:12their story. And when you hear that story out, then you could
- 5:18potentially seek inconsistencies with what they're saying, or
- 5:23bring in your specific solution that is right for them in this
- 5:28moment. And that is the key. So listening deeply, without
- 5:33judgement, forging that connection, that trust and
- 5:37leveraging your own influence in that way. People don't want to
- 5:42be told what to do. You want to motivate them, because you want
- 5:46them to want to do it. And so my question to you is, are you
- 5:51seeking certainty and validating your own assumptions? validating
- 5:55that you have all the solutions? And you're right? Or are you
- 5:59seeking clarity and understanding of the other
- 6:03person's worlds? I have an activity for you a fun activity
- 6:08you can do right after this podcast, I want you to start to
- 6:11be aware of your own mindset. When it comes to these
- 6:14interactions. Are you seeking certainty and validate your
- 6:19assumptions, or clarity, there is a storytelling approach
- 6:25called character creation, and cost play. So in character
- 6:30creation, you get all these traits. And then you can create
- 6:32a story based on that trait, you can create their behaviour, you
- 6:36can create the motivation of that character. That sounds like
- 6:40clarifying our own assumptions, right? That sounds like
- 6:43certainty. And so are you doing that? Are you getting the traits
- 6:47of this person and looking at that person's trait and creating
- 6:49your own story? Or are you moving into cosplay, and cosplay
- 6:55is a method where you go into the realm of this environment,
- 6:59you don't know what is about to happen, you don't know the
- 7:03character. So want you to go even if you've known this
- 7:06person, or even if you had interactions with this person,
- 7:10constantly seek clarity, and move into the realm of cost
- 7:14play, which is really just seeking to understand the person
- 7:18today, as if you've never met them before. What is happening
- 7:21today? What are their feelings today? What are their problems
- 7:24today? They might not know what their problem is? And you by
- 7:28asking genuine questions can help them clarify this problem?
- 7:32And asking, what is the impact of the problem? Oh, it's
- 7:35impacting your relationships, it's impacting your health, they
- 7:38might see that, then only then you might offer for them to
- 7:43figure out their own solution. So what do you think might help?
- 7:47What do you think are the best next steps for you, then the
- 7:52person feels more motivated to help themselves versus coming in
- 7:57with our own assumptions of what we might think that they need.
- 8:01So moving into understanding, first seeking to understand the
- 8:05person deep listening without judgement, just accepting the
- 8:10roam the environment, the character as is, and then
- 8:15helping him or her to clarify their situation, and possibly
- 8:20their own solutions. So this is a very different way of
- 8:25listening and influencing. And when you do this, when you're
- 8:30able to listen at this level, you are increasing your your
- 8:35trust, and building that trust and that connection, forging
- 8:39meaningful relationships. And then and only then will your
- 8:45influence skyrocket. Because you're there for them. You're
- 8:49helping them see their own problem, clarifying their own
- 8:53solutions based on what they want to do. And when you can do
- 8:57that you're building their relationship, you're then
- 9:00therefore making a bigger impact in that person's life. And
- 9:05therefore impacting more people, perhaps your team impacting the
- 9:10organisation and you are seeing even more so as that powerful,
- 9:16effective leader that you are. I hope that you take these these
- 9:22tips for deep listening, forging meaningful connection and
- 9:27building trust and making a bigger influence in the world.
- 9:31And so, until next time, I'll see you on the next episode.
- 9:35Take care
