- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Hello.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Hey.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: You didn't tell me that you were going to say welcome, and then I immediately just panicked.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It was like, how do I respond to that?
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: I I I feel like I make it too short because everyone always panics with it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I still warn people, but like that everyone panics and like, oh, it is really short.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: No, it was a super warm welcome.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Like it was nice and more.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh god, what do you say when someone says welcome?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It's not that like hello, you know?
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: I gotta stop saying that as well because like even the intro stuff that I record separately, I take that bit out and it's like it doesn't make I don't feel like it makes sense because everyone's just like, oh, thank you for having me, but like it doesn't make sense to what I've just said beforehand.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: That's really funny.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, how are you how are you doing now?
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: You you've had COVID.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I did.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I got it when it wasn't even cool to have it anymore, it's so embarrassing.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And also, like, I truly spent like months, like my friendship group from home all got it over Christmas, um, except two of us.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And I started a new group, put all the people who had COVID into that group and then left it and called it beters.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So, like, hopefully, no one deserved to get COVID more than I deserve to get COVID.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Like, I was awful, but I was still like when I saw the double line on my like LFT, I was like, no! This is the worst thing ever.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Now you're in that group on your own.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally, like they actually they were really nice about it.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: They've just renamed the group Carla's a beta, so it was just like I fully deserved that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you do actually after that was all that time.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: 100%, I was such a dick, and it was over Christmas as well.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Like, I was such a dick to them and like just fully deserve to get owned and did eventually.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I was like telling everyone I was immune.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, I don't think I don't think I can get it, making it like I was like some kind of like survivalist, like idiot in like World War Z.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I'd be like, I'm just I just it's not for me actually.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Like such an idiot.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: I I'm I'm really like pushed in the boat here, but I I have not had it still.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Are you not?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, okay, keep that up because like truly the smugness that I felt before getting it, oh beautiful, and now I'm like I can never feel that smug about anything again, and it's really ruined my life.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: I don't feel smug about it.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm like constantly in fear that I'm gonna get it.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: When is it when is it happening?
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: When is it happening?
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be like the moment that I it's gonna be like this this week that I truly do not want to have it.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it oh it always comes at the worst time, but then I was like, actually, like, what is do you know what I mean?
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Like, what's a good time to get it?
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: There's no there's no there's never gonna be a perfect time, but it's gonna be like one week where I have so many things to do.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I'll be like, that just swipes you up.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: No, you'll be fine.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I reckon if you're if you've not been rubbing it in other people's faces, then you don't you haven't built up that bad karma to get it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: You'll be okay.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: I don't I based on my work, I truly don't know I I have no idea how I've not had it yet as well.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Because I'm like, surely all these people would have like brought it, someone would have brought it in at this point.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean you're just either very lucky, you are immune, or in an ideal world, um, you are just like following restrictions and staying away from people and the restrictions work.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: That was crazy.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I mean I wear a mask everywhere.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, same though.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Like to be fair, I still do everywhere.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Like I've been like really following it, so I don't know.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It is what it is.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, I kiss like 17 strangers, but that's like I did not and over Christmas as well.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Uh sorry, you've got to celebrate New Year's.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, are you are you okay now though?
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: You've are you've have you recovered?
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Negative, I feel great positive about the negative result.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm yeah, I'm tired, really tired, but other than that, I'm fine.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: You're really tired still.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Uh I've I've heard like everyone has that though.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: So Yeah.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I think it's I was like joking to my friend about it, like she called me and I was like walking around the living room and I was like, God, I'm really tired.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Like I need to learn.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And she was like, that's how you get long COVID, like if you push yourself too hard, and I'm I don't think walking around the coffee table counts.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm pretty sure I should be fine after this.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: I'll just walk into my room.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Like, okay.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, it's fine.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: I feel okay now, so good, good.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: You feel good, but emotionally, I imagine you don't feel great after this movie.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, yeah.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Well, in a way, okay, so you're right, this movie is the saddest movie of all time.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I'll say that up front.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Like, I think it's like truly the most.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And I've watched it, I'm not joking, I'm gonna say 40 times is like the most.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: It's been out what five years?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, but every time I'm sad, I put this like every single time.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And so I see it as like a cathartic experience where like during the movie I'm truly devastated, and then afterwards I'm like, I don't feel sad about me anymore, or whatever was going on.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I I like to think of it as like a placebo cry where I'm like I'm telling myself I'm just crying because of a doctor's purpose, but actually, obviously I'm crying because like my life is trash, but like really there's no way of distincting of being like distinctive between those two things.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So, like, oh I find it such an enjoyable experience to like properly weep at this film, but it is it's so sad when you're in it.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I don't wanna it's so sad under stress it.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I knew it's so sad.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Like I can't believe you like this was well, I I I can believe it, but to I'm I'm s I cannot believe that you put you made me watch this.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: I am I did I did warn you, like I did it's super emotional, like it is like Yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I knew it was gonna be as well because it's a dog, it's about a dog, so and also like it's not just a dog film, but like it's a reincarnated dog film.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: So there's like multiple dog deaths that you just have to like be aware of at the further top, and everyone is sad, like everyone's they're so tragic.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, the first I think like I'm there's one that is awful, yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Is it there's one that is horrible.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Is it the one in the middle?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Really, really sad times.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: I feel like the first time I went to watch this film, I went to see it in the cinema, and like I cried uh like from an embarrassingly early point in the film.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Uh and then just something unrelated, like not even sad.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Pushing that crying point back slightly.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So I'm still sobbing, but it like I'm basically like, what's the exposure therapy where you like yeah, but with this one film where I like slowly move it back to a point where I'm like slightly less embarrassed that I'm crying.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Where does it where do you start now?
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Now is um the point at which uh the point at which um the main character Ethan goes to college, like he goes away and he leaves the dog.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: So early.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Still early.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but before it was like, you know, in like the scene where he's already it's the Bailey, it's the Bailey reincarnation of the dog.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but he's in the hot car.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: That's where I'm like, that was my first time of me just being like, oh my god, this dog's gonna die.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Like it's like this awful.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: So now I've pushed it back at least half an hour, which I think is quite good over 40% watching it.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: There'll be one point where I watch it and I don't feel anything, and then that's the point where I'm that's that's that's kind of concerning if you don't feel anything watching this though.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: They're just numb as a person if you don't cry at this at all.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I cannot imagine.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Like, honestly, I think like I would use this as a test for someone I was dating.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Of course, yeah.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Like I'd be like, oh well, just watch a dog's purpose.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: And if they didn't cry, I'd be like, okay, you're an actual sociopath, like we're not getting on.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: You truly you have to be a sociopath and not cry at this movie.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Like, it got me, but it like it didn't get it got me at the first death.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Not the first death, because the first death is like within seconds.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, well, I first main the main the main one.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the main first death, yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: It's so there's so much death in this film, it's actually insane.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: I didn't even realise how much until just talking about it now, trying to like subtly drop which death is the saddest.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Like insane.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: It is a film that's like engineered to make you emotional, and I think like it's pure melodrama, yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: But it also like all of the beauty of humanity in it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Like it's such a good film, it just is.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: There are two criticisms of this film that I would like allow.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Like, I would disagree with them, but I would allow them.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Every criticism of this film, I'd be like, no, you're wrong.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: But the two that I would be like, fine, are they overuse the point of view shots?
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I didn't even think about that.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: It's a nice, it's a nice idea, but they overuse it and at points it feels quite gimmicky.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: If someone said that, I'd be like, okay.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And the other one, I did think about this.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: What's the other one that I would allow?
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Um, I can't remember it.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Well, maybe there's only one.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: I've got one big criticism.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, what is it?
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Using Josh Gadd as the voiceover.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, like, I think he does a really good job.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: I think he does an incredible job.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I literally one of them I like wrote notes as I was writing it down, and one of them was like, this voice acting is incredible.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: It's too much like it's frozen character.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: It's like that's all I'm getting from it.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's fair.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: But then like this came, yeah, that is for I think that's the only reason he got this, is because he could like yeah, they're like, we gotta recreate that.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And were they wrong?
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: No.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: They were absolutely right to try and recreate that.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: It's incorrect.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Well, do you know who was who do you know who was originally gonna be the voiceover?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: No, who?
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Bradley Cooper.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, that would have been terrible.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: That would have been so bad.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but he was actually was he actually like casting them.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: That's awful.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: That's such a bad shout.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: He's both sexy to be like a voice Sex too sexy.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: A voice of a like lovely dog.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: I didn't realise this was also a book.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Have you read the book?
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: I have read the book.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: I got I got given the book for a birthday present.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: And I've read the book.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: I I get given a lot of like dog books.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I've also been given Marley and me, like people like know who I am as a person.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I think it was like, yeah, it's fair.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: It's actually like, I mean, it's trash.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Uh written, it isn't well written.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: It's a visual, it's built for a visual medium.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: This is pure yeah, it's such a visual medium.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Because like I can't imagine reading it and like getting sad about it.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: I'd just be like, oh, okay.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: I think like to be fair, Marley and me, the book, made me sad, made me more sad than a dog's purpose the book did.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: The book's more like it delves more into like the kind of uh like the what is the meaning of life, the kind of like philosophical philosophical which is so funny to say about a movie about reincarnated dogs.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Like it's ridiculous.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: But but I do still love that because I'm like it's really nice and pure when you look at it from like just an objective perspective of like this is what dogs like I I hadn't watched it since I had my dog.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Um no.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And I I was like, oh my god, this is a totally different viewing experience.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Like I just had her on my lap the whole time, like, don't die, like you're so perfect.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: Can I what kind of dog have you got?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Um she's a short key, it's like a uh Shih Tzu cross with a Yorkshire Terrier.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Oh little little scruffer.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: Tiny little dog.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Can I show you my dog?
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Please show you a picture of my dog.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Look at this.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be this is gonna get you.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: No! It's so much like Bailey!
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Oh no! Oh no, that's so tragic.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Also, what a beautiful dog! Oh my god, I don't know how you watch this film.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: I would hyperventilate it.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: That's why the Bailey one got me, I think.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, also they do spend so much uh that's the other criticism.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: That is the main That is the other criticism I would allow is I think there's maybe one too many miniature stories.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Like I don't think they need the cop one.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: No, but yeah, I I dn I yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: I think that's probably the one I'd cut.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if you because you the others are all kind of like they have to be in there, like uh when he was with the student, he learnt to love another dog, which is important for later when he like then meets that other dog reincarnated.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It when you say it, it does sound insane.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Without the visuals of tidy puppies running around, it does sound mental.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: But I did think the cop story was nice, I just think that there wasn't like quite enough time dedicated to it.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: It's like five minutes in the movie.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it kind of feels like it just doesn't need to be there.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Um in the I think it's just showing like what it's just like it's what, sorry?
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: In the book, there's a bit more of that, so it feels more grounded.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: I thought it was just to show like a dog has a dog can have like multiple purposes.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Multiple purposes, yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: I think yeah, that's kind of what it comes across as in the film is like um sorry, in the book is like um you're very much like, oh okay, like this this dog has a job, but it's its job isn't enough.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Like the actual purpose is just like loving humans, which oh my god, isn't that like an adorable thing?
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Dogs are so pure.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's so sad.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: It is so sad.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna yeah, so I'll I will explain the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: It's basically we've been kind of talking about it, but it's just basically uh a it's it it's the reincarnation of a dog every so often, and you start you see like the dog's progression through life with different owners.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: But it's like different different dogs as well, technically, but it's the same dog doing a voiceover.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: It's the same dog, it's Josh Gad.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: It's the dog's soul being reincarnated several times through several lives, but it has sentient memories of its past lives.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: What is Yeah, it has sentient memories, but then also like it forgets a lot of stuff.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: It does forget a lot of stuff, but it forgets like where it lives and stuff, but then it remembers more than like I don't know if do you believe in reincarnation?
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: I don't, but No, neither do I.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: It's kind of hard to like argue for it if you don't believe in it.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: But if it's a thing, which it could be.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: It could be.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: You know, it could be.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm more of like anything about any of my reincarnated life.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: So the dog does better than I have, if reincarnation is real.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: I just like the idea that it's always reincarnated as a dog though.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but then it's like I guess that makes that's what I'd not do like that's kind of personally what I really don't believe in in reincarnation terms, because I think it makes sense that you would always be reincarnated as the same kind of being.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, interesting.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: So you kind of agree with this then?
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think so.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Maybe Dog's Purpose makes me believe in reincarnation.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I don't I just think like it makes no sense to me that you would like be reincarnated as like a moth.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Like I might be there.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but what if you like light?
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Also, yeah, I guess.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: If you like but then also like, isn't there supposed to be and it's been a long time since I learned about reincarnation, like it's literally been since school.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Isn't there supposed to be that you're kind of like uh reincarnated depending on how you your actions were in that life, either up or down, or kind of like Yeah, that's what I think.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, but then like that's assuming that humans are like near the top of the scale, which I don't necessarily agree with.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: I definitely don't agree with that.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: But maybe dogs are the top of the scale, and because of that, once you get to dog level, you're never gonna lose it.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because dogs are always good.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like that's a really good theory.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: I didn't even think about that until this this second.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Shut up.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Like there's no bad dogs.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's bad owners, but there's no bad dogs.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, as we see in this, there's bad owners.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: In this, there's a lot of bad owners in this, it makes me sad.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, oh yeah, I guess there's two I would say there are two bad owners in this.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: The people at the beginning, the very beginning, who Oh yeah.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: That's who I was thinking of with and then the couple where they have like Yeah, the couple burner.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: No, what is the breed of that dog?
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: It's beautiful.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a gorgeous dog.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: They're bad owners, but they're yeah, sad.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: And I was also thinking of Ethan's dad.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Who?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Lenny Bruce in Mrs.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Mason.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: And he's not credited as anything other than Ethan's dad.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Like, occasionally Ethan's mum will call him Jim, but like, ignore that because in the actual credits, he's just Ethan's dad, which is incredible because it's the same time period, so theoretically, the film and universes could be the same, and Ethan's dad could be Lenny Bruce.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: I was like, that's and he's an alcoholic, like so is Lenny Bruce.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, a family man that wasn't really a good family.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: He was always on the road, always on the road, yeah.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: They said that it was for salesman stuff, but like, come on.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Little artistic license, and it could be that Lenny Bruce is in a dog's purpose, which I love.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: He gets into it.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Like that's how he gets into comedy, is is once he gets once he leaves the family.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: He just gets on the open mic circuit and look, yeah.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Meet.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my god, it's all coming to life.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I don't believe I don't know anything about Lenny Bruce, but I hope he wouldn't be that mean to dogs and his yeah.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: I'm not I'm not that other than like the Mrs.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: Mazel stuff, I'm not that for gonna do with him.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Same, I don't know him at all, but the actor Luke Kirby, who's like in this, makes me love him so much that it literally transcends like I'm like, I fancy Lenny Bruce.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know what Lenny Bruce even looks like.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: I'll be honest, I have no idea if I fancy Lenny Bruce.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: I think you should give him a Google now.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: I'll Google him.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: Hang on.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: I want to see how good I know what he looks like, but I'm just trying to see like exactly how much he looks.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does kind of look like him.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Does he?
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Kind of.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: It's a really good performance from Luke Kirby in that show.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's great in that.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Um, let me see.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Refresh.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Half of the pictures of Letty Bruce are of Luke Kirby.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: That's how he's yeah, he's fit.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, that one's that one's really great.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Find the one of him getting arrested.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: That's because he was dog abusing.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: That's that's what you did.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was nothing to do with the language on stage.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: It was actually just a dog abuse.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that's my fun like theory about the film now.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: I just haven't watched it like I last time I watched it, I think I'd like only just started Marvelousness and Maze or didn't like kind of properly click in my head.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: And this time I was like I was like, oh my god, and it's in the 50s, so it all works out.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: I originally thought that uh because I'd seen uh um Dennis Quaid with the dog with a dog, and I hadn't so I thought it was gonna go through like a long life of like I thought the dog was just gonna live for years and years and years.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: And I was like, what is this?
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: The dog was gonna be like over 50 human years old.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: I thought what is this some kind of magic potion or something.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I say that as if it's any less crazy than dog reincarnation.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, we should also state that this is this has 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Which is a disgrace.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: 70 but 73% from the audience.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, good.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Mostly you.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: I've just been repeatedly upvoting it.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: I've got so many 10,000 plus ratings is 73%, so yeah, and every time you watch it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Just come back on.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Also, I've got so many different Rotten Tomatoes accounts.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Like a Dog Lover 1, a Dog Lover 2.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Like they're all me.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: I think that makes sense.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: 70.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: I can understand why people would critique it.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: I think those people are wrong, and I will fight them to the death over this film, which I genuinely believe is an incredible movie.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Is a worthwhile piece of art.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: I like I didn't hate this movie.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, that was.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: I didn't hate it.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: I thought I was gonna hate it.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't wait.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: I was fully expecting to hate it, and I thought and like it's very melodramatic, but it works.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: It is very melodramatic, yeah.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of jeopardy the whole way through the film, like every other like second.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Like I I forgot how quite how quickly it gets into just like the scene where um the puppy is like running away um from the kind of like puppy farm scenario.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Uh I was like, oh my god, this is like a genuinely great action scene.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Like I was like, this is so exciting, like I'm thrilled, and then like nearly dies immediately, and then like gets to the house, you don't know if the dad's gonna let him keep it.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Like it's all very like, ooh, like I just continually felt tense throughout the entire watching process yesterday and was like, and then the fire, the fire, the fire.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: The fire's so sad when he's like being lifted down within the sheets.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Within the sheets, yeah.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Also, I think that actually that's like one of the saddest parts of the film that is like not a dog death, but you know when Ethan is in afterwards, like really depressed, yeah.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Like, not gonna get a scholarship.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: And I also think this film is a great example of like.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Like a critique of the American academic system, in that like this boy is like fully needs this scholarship to escape his small town life.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's mad.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And he like is super depressed, has broken his leg, like feels awful, is not gonna get his academic scholarship.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: And the dog's just lying there, like, what did I do wrong?
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Like, why didn't he want to play with me?
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Oh my god, my whole soul.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: I just want to be like, You did nothing wrong, I love you.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: You know it's true as well.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: You know that's what the dog's thinking.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: I like I literally just had COVID, I couldn't take my dog out.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Like, we've got a back garden, so she was just out in that.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: But um, she was just like every day, like looking at me, like sat by the front door, like, and I was like, I can't explain to you why I can't go out, like I hate this.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's so sad.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: So sad.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: I was like trying to, I was like, it's just a week, like it's a week, or we're fine, like you're going out all the time, like you're fine.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, so hard.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: Has your dog ever had to have like the cone or anything?
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: No, luckily, she got um, she's a rescue, so she got spade before I had her, so she will have had to have it like before, um, but hasn't had to since, which is good.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: The only thing we've ever had is she ate a pen lid and I had to rush her to hospital.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: It was so stressful.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: I had to rush her to the hospital, and I was like sobbing, like she was fine.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Like, I was just like fully crying.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: I got into the vet's uh surgery, and there was a guy there with his dog, and he was like really nice to me, like because I was just like a mess.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Like it was like I think it was like maybe 10 at night, and I was just like, fully like she's gonna die.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: And he was like, Look, it's probably gonna be fine.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Like, if they were if they were that worried, they would have rushed my dog out of surgery and put her in surgery.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Like, if it was that urgent, like, kind of don't worry about it, kind of thing, was really nice.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, thanks so much, like hyperventilating.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Like, I just love her, she's just so small to a stranger.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Like so embarrassing.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: The next day when I took her home, like she had to stay overnight, and I went to pick her up, and she immediately tried to eat like a plastic um bottle cap on the bus.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I hate you, you stressed me out beyond belief.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're immediately back at your old tricks.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: My dog did this like basically the same in his first year, he ate he ate a big he like jumped up on the table while we were away and like like not in the room, and he ate like something with loads of onion in it.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Oh no, yeah, to rush him to the hospital rush him to the vets there, and then within within like six months of that, he ate loads of chocolate as well, and we had to rush and we're like, what are you doing?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Like, they don't understand, it's bad for them.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: But you're like the look that they give you when you're like if I'm eating something that has onion in, she'll just be sat there like and I'm like, no, this would kill you.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Like I'm not not giving you this to be a dick.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not giving you this because I really like you.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: I want you to live.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: I just and also for like 50 years, please.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Like be like that Bailey dog, please.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: I also was like, I think it's probably just because well, I don't know if it's just like emotional or whatever, like watching it with a dog, but I was like watching it and I convinced myself fully that if this was a reality and dogs do reincarnate, I was like, she would find a way back to me.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: I was like, I thought I'm pretty confident, I'll like zoom to like 30 years' time and I'll be like Dennis Quaid S and she'll be a different dog, but still with me, and I'll be like, yeah, knew it.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: But you're gonna find your high school sweetheart as well.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Oh, fingers crossed, not he was a terrible.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: No shade.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, he he might be an old man with with a fam like a family, but he's on his own now.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I do think that that part is really I love watching anything with a teen romance in, like, really love it.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: And I do think that this one is good.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: I think it's established quite well.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: I think it's believable that they like each other.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: And I think it's nice that like the dog is always like the third part of it.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: I also think The dog is the reason they meet.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so cute.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: And I think that one of the strongest parts of like the teen part of the story is how good the bully is, because he's so good, like such a prick.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Just like believably his dialogue's super clunky, but then I was thinking about it and I was like, yeah, but teenager's dialogue is really clunky.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Like, have you spoken to a teenager recently?
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Because they are just No, I haven't.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Don't.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: They're really awful.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Like they're really awful people.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Why are you going around talking to teenagers?
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, uh, I do I was gonna be like, I do some volunteering actually with with like teenagers, but it makes me look like a dick if I'm like gonna hate them.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: It's just like what do you do for teenagers?
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Um oh I work at um I volunteer at Vauxhall Food Bank and there's volunteers there too.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: It's good it's a great place to volunteer.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: That's nice.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I recommend it.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't think it should exist.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: No, it's sad that it exists, but it's good that it's also good that it exists.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, this should not have to exist at all.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: But also when you're there, you're like, oh, it's a really nice like sense of community, and like obviously it's good that we're doing something rather than nothing.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: It's just it's it's the wrong shouldn't be directed there.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: I'll talk to you about that afterwards, actually.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: I want to I'm interested about that.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: Um but okay, so let's kind of shall we talk through the like I guess we'll talk through it.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: I was like, shall we talk through the plot?
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I guess we will.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Because it's it there's there there's a lot that happens.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very uh surprising that yeah it's only 90 minutes.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: No, it is, it's it's like not just over 90 minutes, yeah, I think.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Which I think is the right length for a film as well.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: It's listed incorrectly on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: It says it's two hours long, it's not two hours.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: No, there's no way it's two hours.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: I just watched it, it was not two hours.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it doesn't, it also doesn't feel it's very pacey, like at points maybe too pacey, like that's the only thing I'd say, but I would say the first 30 minutes maybe drags a little bit, and then it picks up a little bit.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Very quickly, yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: And then it's like bam, like a lot is happening immediately.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: You're like, okay.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Um it's probably the stuff with the when Ethan is a child, it's like a little bit slow.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Do you think?
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: I think that I think it's necessary to have that to establish the relationship he has with the dog.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I get why they've done it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: I think if it was like if they kept the same pacing through that bit that they do through the rest of the film, you'd just be like, you wouldn't really get why he was so attached to it or why the dog was so attached to him.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: But like, really, it's like it's just the relationship that every child has with their dog.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Like, it's so nice because it does completely capture that like joy of like your first pet.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Did you have a dog as a ch as a child?
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Um, I was like 12 when I got my first dog.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Same cats and stuff.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Um, and to be fair, I did feel like, but I he's a lot younger than me in the film.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I feel like he's probably what like seven or eight.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, about that.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I did have like a real joy of like the first time I had a dog.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: I loved it so much.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: What dog did you first have?
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Border collie.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, very good dog.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Lovely dog.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: So we had we had a black lab.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, nice, lovely.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: And then now it's a golden retriever.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Nice, good breeds, so strong breeds.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: And they're like they they but they could not be more opposite.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: What personality wise?
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Personality-wise, yeah.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: The first the the Labrador was so quiet and calm, yeah, and like never didn't ever bark, never barked once, and now this one is just so hyper and barks all the time.
- 29:54unknown: Yeah.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Golden retrievers are like famously like really fun, fun breed, but they're very like active and like wild.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Like he needs so much attention.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Our border collie was like, they're supposed to be super smart, and he was dumb.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: I loved him so much, but he was so dumb.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: And he was just like more like um, more like an old man than a dog, really.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Like really kind of grumpy, like not grumpy, just like wanted his own space, like with he would come and sit in the room with you, but if you fussed over him too much, he'd be like, ugh, like ugly, you're so needy, kind of thing.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Get over this.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Whereas my dog now is like, oh my god, the neediest dog I've ever met, and I love it so much.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: But like just as needy back.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: Have you got her is he is she there now?
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's just asleep at the moment.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: I can wake her up, but I don't want to wake her up and then have her start barking.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: No, don't wake her up.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: Don't wake up dogs.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: They do say let sleeping dogs lie.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: They let them need it.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: Uh one thing I want to point out is that um do you know the director of this?
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Uh no.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Okay, so it's I don't know how to pronounce his name, but it's I'm gonna say I'm gonna try attempt it.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Less let's say Halstrump.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Oh next, Swedish.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Swedish, yeah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: I want to but I want to point out I want to list some of the films he's directed.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, great.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: So he directed this.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: He produced the sequel.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: It wasn't his first film.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, not at all.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Like, you can't come out of the gate hitting this hard.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Like, that's fake.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: But I will tell you.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: So one of his first films is Abba the Movie.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: I haven't watched Abba the Movie, so I can't comment on that.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Not not the uh not Mamma Mia, Abba the Movie.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: No, I yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: I haven't watched I've watched Mamma Mia, but I haven't watched Abba the Movie.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: I've not seen Abba the Movie.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but then his second film, Life My Life as a Dog.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, so he really loves dogs.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: In 1985.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: 1985.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, so he's like, yeah, what?
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: But My Life as a Dog has nothing to do with dogs.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, what's it about?
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: It's about it says it's about a coming of age story, okay?
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Uh about a boy.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: Doesn't have a dog in it.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Confusing title.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it has a dog in it, but I I haven't seen it, to be honest.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: But he also directed What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Oh my god!
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: The Cider House Rolls.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: Chocolate.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: What?
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Um but then he he directed Hachiko, a dog story.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: So he's got a he does really like dogs.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: He's got a dog, he's got priors.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: And then he got and then he w salmon fishing in the Yemen, dear John.
- 32:46unknown: Hey!
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: This man has like the biggest breath of types of it's so weird.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Safe haven.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Safe haven, is that the one with what is that?
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Is that I think that's the John Green one, isn't it?
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: I want to say.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: I feel like Oh Nicholas Spark, sorry, not John Green.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: I get the yeah, I haven't seen the the like cover for that and haven't watched it.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: I uh yeah, I I've seen this one, I've just remembered what it is.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: It's not good.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: Is it with Channing Tatum?
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: No, it's the one with Josh Dumal and Julianne Hoff.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: I don't think I've I that doesn't bring that up.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Is it bad?
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: Well, we've all gonna have one bad film, and a dog isn't this guy's.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: But he's My Life as a Dog is a hundred percent on here.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: A hundred percent?
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna watch that off.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Maybe I should watch it.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: A hundred percent is an insane rating.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: How many ratings though?
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Because if it's like four.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: Uh 34.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: 34 ratings.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: That's quite hard to still get 34 people to say 100%.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's also got 90% from the audience, so like that's decent.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's it's probably pretty good.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, like, but yeah, Dog's Purpose.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: I didn't know there was a sequel to this as well, or Dog's Journey.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: I wanted to see I want to see the sequel in the cinema.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: You went to see the original in the cinema though as well.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Both of them in the cinema, I love these films.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Have you seen Hachiko as well?
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: No, I haven't.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be a sad one.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: I know the story of that.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: That's a sad story.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, that's on my list already.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's gonna destroy you.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: That's what I want out of the cinematic experience.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: I want to leave the hell of myself.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: I've seen I've I there's uh it's a basically it's it's a story from Japan, and it's like um in in Tokyo, there's a like a statue of the dog, and it's so sad.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: Is it like the Greyfries Bobby of of Tokyo?
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Grave what?
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: A grey fries Bobby is a dog, a Scottish dog, that used to uh like that waited for its owner.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: I can't really remember the specifics of the story, but it was really sad.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: Like That's the story.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: That's the story, yeah.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: I wonder if like every town has its own sad dog story.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: It makes me think of have you seen Futura Armour?
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: Like, are you?
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: That's like the maybe the first one that ever got me.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, same.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Like, that's honestly like when I think of TV episodes that have made me weep, that's oh yeah.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: That's that's the top one.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Like, oh, rough, rough stuff.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: And it's animated, which I think is even harder to make you genuinely emotional through.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, oh god, I just think of that and I'm like, too much.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: Although I think like I'm thinking of some animated things that have got me, like there's that, there's up, obviously, as well.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: And then um Bojack Horseman.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: I've never watched Bojack Horseman.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: Oh it's ru no, I don't mean because you've not seen it, I just mean like because it really it will get you.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: I've heard that it's just like really good.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Like I've heard that's so good.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: No one stressed the sadness to me.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Is it only like one is it like one element of sadness or is it like a sad?
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: I mean he's uh basically he's it's to do with him.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: I don't want to spoil it.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, don't, because I do want to watch it.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Like it basically I'm just surprised that like all like so many of my friends have tried to make me watch it, and I'm so surprised that they haven't led with it's sad.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Like I'm like, that's how you get me to watch things.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Duh.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: Tell me it's sad.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: I'm all in.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: It's never joyous.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Never also one of the characters is a is a dog.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Well A talking dog.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: So is this one technically, which I would thought.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: I mean he's yeah, and he's he's called Mr.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Peanut Butter, and he's lovely.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: That's a great name for a dog.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Like an insanely good name for a dog.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: And all he's like a he's a dog, like all the characters in it are like uh uh human hybrids of like animals.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: And so they're all talking and everything.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: Uh actually, and they're not all human hybrids because some of them are just humans.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, but thinking about it.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: It's very weird, but it works.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: But Mr.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Peanut Butter has all like the characteristics of a dog, but like as a cute, like in his like human esque body.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Have you like I think there are genuinely people that I know that like really remind me like of dogs?
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Like, and I mean that as like such a compliment.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Like do you can you name any like that we that I would know?
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100% like Thor Stenhoog is just a puppet.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: Like like you spent any amount of time with him and he's just like bouncy and like so friendly and happy, like like I'm I'm like probab somewhere I've I have a theory that everyone's either more cat or more dog, and like somewhere along there.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: And I think I'm very dog like, but I can have cat moments.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: I think you're very dog like.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Do you think?
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: That's nice.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: I really take that as a compliment because if you I think you're definitely more dog, I don't see the cat.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's good.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm happy with that.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: I basically just said it to like not give myself a huge compliment, which is great calling myself a dog.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Have you ever heard Alice Fryan's bit about uh um rat or potato?
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: No, that sounds really funny.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: It's like everyone has a like either a rat face or a potato face, and like it's so nice.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: Me and my friends have a thing where we uh think everyone either looks like a mouse or a rat.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Like you're either a rat.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: And like that's wait, what are you then?
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Oh rat, for sure.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: I I wish I could trick myself into thinking I was a mouse.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: I'm full rat.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Like I think I'm full rat.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you probably are more rat.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like you could you could pass as a mouse, but the thing is people get really offended with the rat one, but I'm just like, you just have strong features, that's what it means.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Like mousy people.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: We've only got one mouse in my friendship group of like five, and the rest of us are all rats.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: No, maybe maybe Millie's a mouse.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: It can go either way.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: See, I think I'm also like rat more rat as instead of rat or potato.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: I think I'm definitely rat.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah?
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Why like I'm I'm like I'm not a I don't have a potato face.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Do you think like would I have a potato face?
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Is it about the width of your face?
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Because I think it's a wide face.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm not gonna be offended either way.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: I like potatoes and I think rats are cool.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: I think you're more potato face, yeah.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: But interesting, because I'm definitely more rat than a mouse, so Yeah.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: We've got to discuss this with Alice Bryant, we've got to bring this up.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's that's so strange strange as well.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: Like I I've had so many of these weird conversations lately with comedians.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: It's just like another one where would you rather give birth out of your face or your ass?
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Give birth out of your face or your ass.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Um, face, for sure.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Like out of your mouth or your ass, yeah.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely mouth.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: I don't really yeah, I don't think your arsehole's ever forgetting that, but I think your mouth could.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: But I then you're getting up with like Joker face.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think so.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: I mean it's like gonna contract as much as a vagina does, surely.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: Most of us I can fit my whole fist in my mouth.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing it now, don't ask me to do it now, but I can fit my whole fist in my mouth.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: So like I feel like that's about as big as a baby's head.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: No.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, maybe well maybe.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: Surely.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's small.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe noodle meds are really small.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: You've got a big fist.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: I've got a big fist, I've got a big fist and a big mouth.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: I'm everyone I'm every I'm every guy's dream.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: So stupid.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: So dumb.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: I do think doing comedy makes you so much more objective and less like like you're just like, I don't know if this is true with everyone, but I'm so much happier to have a conversation with my like comedy friends where I would be offended with my regular friends, if that makes sense.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I think so too.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Like, if someone says to me, like, I don't know, well, I was playing a game with some comedians the other day, which is like kind of like situationals, like who out of this group would you most like to be stuck on a desert island with, kind of things.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: And in a regul in my regular friendship group, I guarantee that people will have been offended by me being like, I would kill you after one day.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Like, in that group, fine, everyone can see it.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: It's like a compliment in that group.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: You're just you're just saying it like you're just saying facts, it's like weird.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Truly, yeah.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: I I loved your one the other day on on Instagram.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Oh what the fuckable thing, yeah, yeah, very funny.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: People to be fair, most people who reply to that are not comics, so that's really yeah.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: I assumed it was just like 90% comics.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: You can tell when they're not a comic because that's those are the ones that I'll lead with like, I think you'll hate this.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: When they are comics, I'm like, yeah, fine, I'll just tell you how it was like.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: Mustafa's one made me laugh so much.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, Mustafa's was so funny.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Because he named himself as well.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: Of course he named himself.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like I literally was like, the second that that came through, I was like, I'm really grateful that you've done this because it can break up the pattern as well.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: I can just be like, ugh, you're disgusting.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: I love Mustafa so much, he's such a nice guy.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's the loveliest guy, but it's like it's so perfect for him.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: He's like, it's so perfect that he was the one that did that.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Classic.
- 42:07SPEAKER_02: Uh I actually met his sister for the first time the other day as well.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: You actually made what, sorry?
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: Met his sister for the first time the other day as well.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: I've never met his sister.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: What's she like?
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: She's the like the opposite of him.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: Not not as if she's not nice.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: She's very nice, but she's like she she's like very calm and like doesn't have his energy.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: I feel like he has such a calming energy.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: He's calm, but like, do you know like that style of comedy that he has?
- 42:32unknown: Yeah.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: I'm I think I really want to meet her now that you've said that.
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: She's so lovely.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: I have like such a thing where I like want to meet anyone that I'm friends with, I want to meet their entire family.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my god, I want to know everything about you.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Your grandparents still alive, I'll start there and work my way down.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: Also, this is so like this is so like in-house.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Like, people who are listening to this are gonna be like, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Why are you talking about this?
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Like, go back to the dogs, please.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: So I came I came to listen to about dog's purpose.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Which I assume a lot of people will.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: I assume that'll be I assume or they're fans of you.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: Um I if you're a fan of me and you're not a fan of Dog's Purpose, then unfollow me on everything.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: I feel like.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's mad.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: That would be insane.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: If like knowing your comedy and then knowing this, it's like so connected.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: You think that's really nice?
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: I was tempted to do a whole set once, like an off like basically do like an Oscar's acceptance speech.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Like, basically do like what Kanye did to Taylor Swift, but for a dog's purpose.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, please.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: Look, I'ma let you finish.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Like La La La's a great film, but and then just go in on a dog's purpose and how great it is.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: You have to do that.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like Please do that.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a there's a uh Ted Hill has a new night which is called Ni Show.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be doing it as well.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Oh good.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: When are you wait, you're doing it, aren't you?
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: I am, but I'm not doing I've already got like I've got a 10 minute set about how much I hate Mark Ruffalo, so that's what I'm gonna do for that.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: When are you what uh what month are you doing it?
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure it was gonna be March, but I think it's April now.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Oh I think he moved me to May.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: I was gonna be March as well, and he was like, So many people are doing it, move to May.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: I basically had to cancel one of them because I got ahead of clash.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: So I'm I've been moved.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you after because I can't remember when it is.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: I can't I I actually can't remember.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: I think it's May, but yeah, I'm excited to do it.
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: I want to come see even if I'm not doing uh the same one, I'll come see it because I want to see that Mark Ruffalo one.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like is it good?
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: I really enjoy doing it because I really hate Mark Ruffalo.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: That is so interesting.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: Can can you spoil a bit of it now, or do you want to keep it?
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like the essentially I think I just want to hear why you hate him.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: It adds a bit.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: I think it's just more that I get frustrated that like very average looking men can get away with like dating incredibly good looking women in movies.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Like Mark Ruffalo looks like a middle manager at everyone.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: Like he's so average, like he's just bang average, and women will be like, oh my god, Mark Ravalo, did you see him in 13 going on 30?
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: And it's like I think that's what did it for people.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: I think that's what did it.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: He is a toe, like it's so annoying that he gets a huge amount of credit when like women have to be like truly just the most glamorous, beautiful, like perfect looking things, and then they still get paired with like Bill Hayder.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: And like Bill Hayder's so funny, and I fancy Bill Hayder loads, but like it's not fair to see like Natalie Portman paired with like Elijah Wood, like it's just none.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: Like, like either make it aspirational for everyone, or just be like, yeah, movie stars have to be super attractive.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Like, there shouldn't be a gender disparity in that.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: It makes me so angry.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Do you know who Bill Hayder is dating now?
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: Uh isn't it Rachel Bilson?
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: No, that was that's finished.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: Who's that now?
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: He's now dating Anna Kendrick.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: Fuck off! Fuck off! Actually, to be fair, I actually think that's a better match.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: Do you really?
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: Then Rachel Bilson.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: I think she's I think Rachel Bilson's hotter than Anna Kendrick, and I think Oh interesting.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: I think they're about equal level.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: You think?
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: But I think maybe it's just because I think Anna Kendrick, and I don't know if this is just like I she's kind of been placed in my head as someone who's like quite annoying and a bit of a like a bit of like a tryhard.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I get that.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: Do you know what I mean?
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: Like, and I think like that maybe I tend to like, if I really like someone's personality, I'll just think that they're like flawless physically.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: And like even if they're not, I'm like, oh flawless.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Like my ex used to like make fun of me about it all the time because I'd be like, oh my god, don't you think I'm just like so it's crazy how all of my friends are the hottest women in the world.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: No, they're not, like, and I'd be like, No, they are.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: Like I'd be like, I don't think you know.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: Like, you're not making any sense if you knew them like I knew them.
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: That's that's very lovely, but it's also like concerning.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fair.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: But it's like it's it's idealizing, isn't it?
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: But yeah, well.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: I think that you do tend to, I think Yeah, I think it's I think it's natural to do that.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: I mean I wouldn't like actually fight to the death on it.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Like I'd Yeah, I know.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: You know I think if I was friends with Kira Knightley, I'd be like, oh no, my friends are algos.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: I just wasn't friends with Kira Knightley before.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: So it's good to know you're not friends with her though.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: No, I wish.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: Maybe someday.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: She might come see you at a gig.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, I would die.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine?
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: And then you're there doing your Mark Ruffalo bit.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: She's been in a film with him.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: She was in a film.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she has.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, what's it called?
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: The music world.
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: Uh Begin Again.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: I really like that movie.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: I hate it.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: But I think I only hate it because there's also a massive age gap between those two.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's creepy.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: Like, because Adam Levine also treats Kira Knightley like she's like not that special.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: And it's like she's Kira Knightley.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: Like I'm like, I can't suspend my disbelief enough to be like, this is not the most perfect woman in the world.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: Like, like in Funny Face, you know, the Audrey Hepburn, Frank's an archer film, he sings a whole song about how she looks like like she looks she has a funny face, and it's like you literally look like a turnip.
- 48:25SPEAKER_00: You look like a turnip.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: Like, how dare you to Audrey Hepburn?
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: I love all your descriptions of men.
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: It's like a toe and a turnip so far.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: Fruit vegetables or bodily parts.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: I think you could not grilled with.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: And also I I'm a rat.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're a rat.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Slash or a potato, which you're a potato, yeah.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: You you led into the rat thing.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: That was that.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: I think I am.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: Well, I think it I think it's the hair, the facial hair as well.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: I think that adds to it.
- 48:58SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't think the facial hair does it so much.
- 49:01SPEAKER_00: I just think like mouses tend to have rounder faces, which is probably the potato thing as well, really.
- 49:05SPEAKER_02: Ah, I think.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: It's probably where it's coming from.
- 49:07SPEAKER_02: So we got mouse potato, rat, rat.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: Mouse potato, rat, rat, yeah.
- 49:12SPEAKER_00: Oh no, I'm rat potato.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: Because I don't have a Oh, I don't mean I mean, yeah.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: Those are the two polar options.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I guess you can be both.
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: You could you could be.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's a scale, isn't it?
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't even know what how we got onto that.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: Sorry, neither do I.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: We got so far off track of this movie.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: We're actually supposed to be going through like the plot, and then just like, so do you reckon you're a rat or a potato?
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: Entirely my fault.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: Back to the back to this movie then.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: Like So the first thing is the first thing I wrote down is Josh Gad is a dog question mark.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: What what's your point?
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: I I I knew he was gonna be in it.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: I thought he was just in it.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: I I think that the way that they did the voice acting part was quite clever though, because I do think it like A having a consistent voice through all the dogs is like good grounding.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: I do like that.
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: My first note is the first line is what is the meaning of life?
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: Are we here for a reason?
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: I was like, it opens with literal philosophy, like that's incredible.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: I did also write down meaning of life.
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: Isn't it so funny?
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: And it's all done in like a kind of like the best way I can describe it is like an RE video way.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: It is like soft music, and like and it's the dog being given birth for like the for the perspective of the reader for the of the listener.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: It's the dog being given birth to, and then it's like immediately kind of opening its eyes and seeing the world and sensing the world for the first time, and it's like, what is the meaning of life?
- 50:52SPEAKER_00: Is it's first thought, which I think is funny.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I think surely your first thought would be like I don't know, I'm hungry, or like something that's less philosophical.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, I don't think I would yeah.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: One of one of the weird things about this actually, every time he's reborn, he's like his first memory is like late, it's not it's not right as he's born.
- 51:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: I had a I had a bit of an issue with that.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: That is a good point, but then it would be repetitive to see that again and again.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: But I see one dog birth, like I think the funniest time that they do that and they just go, like, oh, I don't have I'm a girl!
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: You're like, why was that necessary?
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: Like, why are they like hammering this home?
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: So funny.
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: Like, why does the dog's gender like matter to it?
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Like, in this in the context of this film, it's wild.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: I just loved some of the reviews of this as well.
- 51:57SPEAKER_02: Like, so there's there's one that's uh given it one and a half stars, and it says, You're meaning to tell me that the dog understood the concept of death and reincarnation and was constantly searching for the meaning of life, but he thought a hot dog was called a meatlock.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: That's so funny.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: But then he does say, and I do think this is true, apparently dogs have like a kind of limited lexicon that they can understand.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: I can't remember how many words it is, but they do like prioritize ones that they need to kind of get.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: So like they'll get their own name more often than not, or things that sound like their name because they don't speak the same language.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he thought his name was Bailey Baby Bailey, Bailey, Bailey.
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: It's just cute, it looks so cute.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: It's like imagine him going around introducing himself to people like hi, I'm Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: So cute.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: But yeah, he's not gonna grasp.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: Do any of us really know what why a hot dog is called a hot dog?
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: For one.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: That's disgusting.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: It is a meat log, it's a better name for it.
- 52:54SPEAKER_02: He knows and also he's a dog, he's not gonna know it's called uh calling it a hot dog is upsetting.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, good point.
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe he's morally chosen to the subjector of the name.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: It doesn't make any sense that it's called a hot dog.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: I'm with the dog on that.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: I think it makes a lot more sense.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: But also, didn't they say that he ate like 34 meatballs?
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: There is no way that a dog wouldn't die after eating 34 hot dogs.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: Instead he just farts.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and a really terrible toxic fart to be fair, which I think anyone with a dog has experienced, and they Oh yeah.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Like the one downside to dogs.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: And then they don't even realise they've done it.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: No, or if they do recognise that they've done it, they like uh like immediately look super guilty.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: Like Oh, you think so?
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely not this, not my dog now.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: She doesn't really like ever notice that she's done it with my old dog.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: You could tell that he knew.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: Because he'd also move away from the smell.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:57SPEAKER_02: My dog will like look at me like I've done it and like get angry like look angry and like walk away.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: Like, it was you.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: That's so funny.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: Do you ever get like gaslit by your dog?
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Like, was it me?
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: Literally gaslit.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: That's nice.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: I thought that's what you were going for.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: No, sadly.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: It wasn't it wasn't smart enough to make the double double meaning, but well uh another review of here, which I agree with is it's once again a reminder that we don't deserve dogs.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, completely.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: That is, I think, the main takeaway to take from this film.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Is like if you go into this film as a dog hater, like, or someone who's scared of dogs, I think you would at least leave it being like maybe they're not so scary.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: And if you go into this film as a dog lover, you'll leave it being like, dogs are the most perfect thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 54:49SPEAKER_00: And like we don't deserve them at all.
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: That is when I left the cinema the first time, that is the overwhelming feeling that I had.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, was just oh my god, dogs are perfect, and that was a perfect kind of like summary of why dogs are so perfect.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, I do have a question actually.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: So you said you saw this at cinema.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: Did you guys see it specifically because you see you see every dog film?
- 55:09SPEAKER_00: No, I went to see it because I'd seen the trailer for it, and uh I don't really like reviews like from reviewers, like I'm not really a big into that because I think they can quite often put people off watching.
- 55:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: But uh at the time I was working at The Times and there's a reviewer there called Kevin someone, I've forgotten his second name.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: It's called Kevin.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: It's called Kevin, he's a good guy, and I tended to I like will read I would read his reviews because I tended to agree with him.
- 55:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah and then go, you know, regardless of what he said about them or not.
- 55:41SPEAKER_00: Um but with Dog's Purpose, he gave it a really high rating.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm gonna try and find his rating on here.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: I think he gave it, I'm pretty sure he gave it a four four out of five.
- 55:54SPEAKER_02: You said you were it was at the Times.
- 55:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm looking for it now.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: If he finds it, I'll be like to be fair, they might not.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: They might like this was just in a like briefing bit, so they might have not actually published it.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure.
- 56:05SPEAKER_02: I'm just looking through the top top review top critics, so I'm imagining he's gotta be in that.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: I would assume so.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: Not coming up?
- 56:14SPEAKER_02: No.
- 56:14SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's not in this.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: They honestly they did it like at like an editorial meeting, so it might not have even been published.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: Right, fair enough.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: They have to go through those meetings and then like they get rejected or not.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: But I remember like hearing that he'd given it a four four out of five stars, and being like being like, Oh, I I saw the trailer for that and I really wanted to see it, and I tend to agree with him, so like I'll go see it.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: Um and went and was like, Yeah, if anything, I think it undermarked that, should have been five.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: Like that did so much.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I found?
- 56:45SPEAKER_02: There's another Times reviewer on here that's given it a rating.
- 56:49SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: Kate Moore.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: I I don't know her, but I don't agree with her at all.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: Well she don't she gave it two out of five.
- 56:57SPEAKER_00: Oh fuck her, like no.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: But but she said the canine performances are impeccable.
- 57:03SPEAKER_00: Nice, which is true, and you can't fault them.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: I wonder how many dogs worked on this.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: I what yeah, that's a really good question.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: Like, how many versions of each dog were there?
- 57:14SPEAKER_00: In my head, I'm like, I want there to only be one.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: But then I'm also like, for like dog working laws and stuff, I would like quite like there to be more than one.
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 57:25SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: There's a seven age seven-year age difference between Hannah and Ethan.
- 57:30SPEAKER_00: What in real life?
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: In real life, yeah.
- 57:33SPEAKER_00: How old is she?
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Uh let me find out.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: That really surprises me.
- 57:40SPEAKER_00: I thought they were like roughly the same age.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they look the same age.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: They did.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: Don't love that.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: She is Oh, she's older.
- 57:49SPEAKER_02: She's definitely older.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: Well, she's like, she was born in 1990.
- 57:52SPEAKER_00: Quite progressive, actually.
- 57:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: Carry on.
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: I that surprises me though.
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: She looks so young.
- 58:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she looks very young.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: And she's played a teenager, so she was born in 1990.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: She she would have been 27 when this came out.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: That's mad.
- 58:08SPEAKER_00: Isn't that mad?
- 58:09SPEAKER_00: She looks convincingly like a 15-year-old, 16-year-old.
- 58:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: I like truly wouldn't have.
- 58:14SPEAKER_00: I thought they'd like got because he's from Riverdale as well, so I thought they had actually got teen stars.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: He's also from New Zealand.
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: His accent work is impeccable.
- 58:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's really good.
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: I had no idea.
- 58:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:26SPEAKER_02: I genuinely had no idea.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: Um he would have been 20 and she was 27.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fair enough.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's yeah, it's like it's mad that I just like had no idea.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: Like, that's really like shocked me.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:41SPEAKER_02: I had yeah, I had no idea.
- 58:43SPEAKER_02: Um what else is there?
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: There's uh yeah, he's from Riverdale.
- 58:47SPEAKER_02: Do you watch Riverdale?
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: I watched the first series and then stopped watching.
- 58:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: But it was good.
- 58:53SPEAKER_02: Now you say the name, I do recognise the name.
- 58:55SPEAKER_02: Now you said that he's in Riverdale, I do recognise the name.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I had no idea he was in it.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: I was speaking to my sisters yesterday about this though, because like they watch every dog movie as well, and I was like, Oh, have you seen it?
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: And they were like, Yeah.
- 59:08SPEAKER_02: I was like, is it any good?
- 59:09SPEAKER_02: And they're like, it's okay.
- 59:11SPEAKER_00: God, what?
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 59:13SPEAKER_02: They watch every dog movie.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: Maybe there are like other better dog movies, and I don't watch the other dog movies.
- 59:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 59:20SPEAKER_02: But that they were like, oh, Britt Robertson's in it, that you will know her.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, Do I know her?
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I don't think I do.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: Who is that?
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: Is that the is that Hannah?
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's Hannah.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't recognise her, but I don't know what else she's been in.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: I'm looking at everything else, and I've not seen a single thing she's been in.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:36SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: It's like it's like uh Tomorrowland, uh Girl Boss Under the Dome.
- 59:47SPEAKER_02: She's in Scream 4, I have seen Scream 4.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: I've seen Scream 4, but I don't remember her being in Scream 4.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: No, I don't remember the guys at the beginning.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: I could not tell you.
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: Marnie Cooper.
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: She must be one of the like, you know, they have like the fake beginning in Scream 4.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she must be one of those.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: Actually, you know what?
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_02: She's also in something called Scream 4 alternate opening, so she must be in the opening.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: That must be her, yeah.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I do not remember I don't remember Scream 4, to be honest.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: Do you not?
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: I really like Scream 4.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_02: I don't remember it at all.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_00: Fair.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen it since it came out, so.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: I I like still haven't watched it.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: I love the Scream Film so much though.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_00: That's like my favourite.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so do I actually.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_02: I I really like well, the first two.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: I don't really like the third one.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: But no one likes the third one.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm one of the only people who defends the third one.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I it's not good, but it's just not terrible.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: Everyone's like, oh, it's so bad.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: Well that I think that's what this is, though, as well.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but this isn't I would actively be like, this is good.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: Like I wouldn't ever say Scream 3 was good, but this I'd be like, I don't think you'll get a more a more genuine emotional experience from a film ever.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: That is a bold claim.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_00: I've never had one.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's because it's not even, but the thing is, it's not even because like it's not like oh you just really like dogs colour and you don't like people or whatever.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: Because it's like the the stuff the stuff that makes me the saddest is the relationship between Ethan and Bailey.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_00: Like when Bailey dies, Ethan's there like with Bailey.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: I was so I was like, when he's gonna die, and they got they on they get on the phone to Ethan because he's he's at college.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: I'm like, don't you dare have him not come back.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm so glad that he did come back.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: But even then, like Bailey was like, I can tell that Ethan's sad and I just want him to be happy.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my gosh.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: I know it's so much.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: I I don't think that like I'd it's yeah, fine, it's like deliberately labored to make you feel that way.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: That's what I can understand people critici tri criticizing.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, but if it does cause a genuine emotional reaction, yeah, then does it matter that it's like Yeah, I completely agree with that.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_02: Like it doesn't it shouldn't matter that that's that's the way that like yes, it's melodrama, but sometimes melodrama can be good.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: And like I think it would if I had like kids that had pet dogs, I would show them this to like make them understand but like if if their dog died, but like I would be like, look, like other people have these kind of relationships with dogs too, like it's like you know, it's like someone's high.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Like wait, would you show it to them before or after?
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, after help them like cope with it.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_00: I feel like before it's like worse.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_02: Wait, who's your dog just died here?
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: Now watch this movie about dogs.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: Not right, not immediately.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, not like same day, let's sit down.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_00: I just think like it would be good, it's a good like structure of showing you like the way that a dog like works into your life, but also that you work into like that you mean a lot to it as well.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_00: Like I think that that's easy because that's what people forget, like you know, they'll be like, Oh, there's like other you know, just go get a new dog, and you're like, No, you don't understand.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: Like, that was like such a personal relationship that I had with that dog, and I think this really like summarizes their relationship so well.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, completely so believable that they loved each other, and that's quite hard to do considering that there are what three different actors who are all having that same relationship.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_00: I'm that's so true.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: I didn't even think about it being three different actors.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I hadn't even thought about that.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_00: Three different actors, two different dogs, but you do feel like the relationship stays like properly centralized and like you really genuinely believe it.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: Like how happy Dennis Quaid is at the end when he realizes that it's that it's Bailey, which also like It's ridiculous.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's I didn't I didn't I can't say I like that bit.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_00: No, I I agree it's a bit contrived, yeah.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: And I also just think like it's not necessary that he needs to know.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, it's nice for Bailey, you get the payoff of being like, oh okay, he doesn't have to like spend his whole life like being like stop calling me buddy, my name's Bailey, and I loved you kind of thing.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: But it is a bit like I just can't imagine ever like even if that happened to me, even if the whole situation happened to me, and I thought my current dog, right, was the reincarnation of my old dog, and I had like I was like, but they do the same weird thing where they like play with a ball.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_02: It's like obviously they play with a ball of dogs, like Yeah, I was like, oh, he just found a ball and it's got a dog scent on it, probably.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like even if that did happen, I can't imagine ever turning to like my friends or like my partner and being like, pretty sure this is my old dog rig on it.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: That is the that's the part of the film where it does like fall apart rapidly, but it's still nice, like you're still like, okay, I can see what you're trying to do here.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_00: You're trying to like disnify it and like wrap it up with a bow.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_00: Like I can't be mad at you for doing that.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_00: It is a film about dogs, yeah.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: But I think it would be stronger if it just the dog found him and he never knew.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_02: I wish it'd done that.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_02: And like I would have- Is it does it do that in the does it do the same in the book?
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_02: Do you remember that?
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_00: I actually can't remember.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: I know that's bad.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_00: I just I can't remember.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_00: Uh I feel like it does.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_00: I feel like he does remember in the book.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like I would remember if there was like a drastic difference at the end.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you don't remember any like massive differences with the f with the film or the book.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: No, I don't.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_02: Of anything.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_02: Like, do you remember anything in like the book like that's changed in the book?
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_00: There's just more of the cop stuff in the book.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: That's like the big takeaway was like, I was like, oh okay, they've put more time into that than they do in the film.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_00: But other than that, I don't remember anything.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Do you know what though?
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: As soon as as soon as there was a cop story, I was like, oh, I know where this is going.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_02: I know exactly what they're gonna do with this dog.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was nice.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_00: And like, I think in the film that felt a bit control.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_02: Say your dog now.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_00: She's awake, so I can get her.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_00: Hang on.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, but she's so small.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_02: She's tiny!
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: Um What's her name?
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: This is Daisy.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_02: Daisy! Daisy! Daisy.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: She's not so dumb.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: I've been gifted with two incredibly dumb dogs in my life.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_00: I love them so much, but I love dumb dogs though.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they are.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_02: They're the best.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: They're the best.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, smart dogs.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Too smart, you're like, I've got too much going on, actually.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: Alright, bud.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: I love her little jumper as well.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: And she's just had like a shave a big a very close shave, so I feel like a jumper is necessary unless she looks a lot like a naked mole rat.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: Also a rat, there you go.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_00: Also a rat, yeah.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_02: Or mole rat, yeah.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_00: Same phase.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, sorry, I was say you were saying that uh what were you saying?
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_00: Um just I feel like that the cop story was a little bit I mean it's it's just a question of the pacing, like the fact that they were like I there was quite a lot of like richness with his story and him being lonely and like needing the companionship.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't feel like that was ever really like gotten into.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_02: No, it was like it was kind it was all like hinted at, but like not delved into enough.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_00: Especially like after he lost the dog, you're like, well, what happened to him?
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_00: Like, we don't get really any like resolution as an audience of like so true.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh my god, I was like genuinely concerned for him, like shit, he's lost the only thing in his life that was his companion, and like that's not good.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_02: Sorry, it's really awful.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: Properly.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, wait, I'm reading about it now.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_02: The Maya segment of the film differs from the events in the book.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_02: In the book, uh Maya's the K and I officer who takes over handling Ellie uh after her first handler Jacob Carlos in the film is shot and injured uh by a kidnapper.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_02: In the movie it's Ellie who is shot fatally by the kidnapper, then reincarnated as Tino the Corgi.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_00: I don't remember that at all.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_00: I just remember it being a way longer section, I don't remember the nuance of it whatsoever.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_00: Like that's just really shocked me.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_00: Even as you were saying it, I was like, nope, I don't remember that.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_02: So wait, Maya.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_02: Maya is the oh, this is so confusing now.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_02: Wait, Maya's the college student.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_02: And so in the book, Maya is a canine officer.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: I don't remember that either.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_00: I've literally read this book.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: I have no memory of these things.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: That's so wait, in the book, is there not a college student?
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_00: I thought Maya was a college student in the book.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: In fairness, it has I've only read the book once, and it was like just after the film came out.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_00: So it was a while ago, and my memory is trash.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_00: But I truly that has shocked me.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_00: I don't remember it at all.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_02: Maya is also Kirby Howe Baptiste, who was is uh very funny person, very funny comedian.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's a really good improviser.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_00: I really recognised her face, but I I couldn't work out what have you seen The Good Place?
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, so she's the Australian girl.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_00: Oh my god!
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, she's actually English.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_00: Sorry, this film has an incredible cast.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_02: She's actually an English girl as well.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_00: That's mad.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: And her accent work is great too, then, because you wouldn't know if Yeah, but not in The Good Place, her accent's awful in that.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_00: Is it?
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: Like inten I think it's intentionally bad.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, yeah, fair, fair.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_02: No, but in this it's good.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_02: Um But yeah, like she uh so she her story is about um she's a college a shy college student who doesn't really want to like she wants to make friends, but she's also like pushing them away.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_02: All these people that she there's this guy that she try tries to talk to her, pushes him away, uh, and she just wants her she wants the dog, Tino.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_02: I th I wrote I thought it was Tito, I wrote down Tito.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_00: Um no, Tino.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_00: She overfeeds that dog as well, something more often ice cream, pizza.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so sad though, when it's old and she's like pizza, and it's like no.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my god, again.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_00: It's like the third point in the film of like me sobbing.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, she wants to find love.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_00: Uh she but she's kind of I f I got the kind of undertake uh or the impression that she was basically like afraid of being rejected.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_00: So she like shut herself away with just Tino as her like only companion, and then eventually she meets this other student who like she kind of lets him in more to her life, and then it turns out that he has a dog, and then their dogs fall in love, and then they get married, and then they have kids.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_00: Um that's funny when the dog when Tino realizes that there's gonna be a baby and is like, oh no, and then there's multiple babies.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_00: It's a really good moment, yeah.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_00: And then Tino that's like seems like a nice life for Tino.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was a great life.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_00: Had like a comfortable, nice, friendly life.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_00: Like, that's all good.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_02: Well, it started off with like Tino never never met anyone else other than like only spent time with with with uh Maya, but then eventually they both found everyone else.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_00: Blossomed.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_00: I think that's crucial for the story, in that like then that's when um Tino fell in love with Roxy, right?
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_02: And that's Yeah, oh yeah, the white the that's the first that's the only time we ever see like that that instance of like an the dog being interested in another dog.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_00: And the dog's reincarnation, like the other dog's reincarnation, right?
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_00: Because the dog isn't that right?
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm pretty sure that the white husky that Hannah's daughter has is a reincarnation of Roxy.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: I could be.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I that's what I've picked up when I've watched it.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's like so familiar, like you're probably right, because like I've I've only seen it the once now, so I mean I could be like just reading into that and being like, but I thought that was like supposed to confirm that like this is happening with all dogs.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I imagine it probably that's what it is.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_00: It's very cute.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_02: Again, all dogs are just re only reincarnated as dogs because they're perfect.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_00: Because they're perfect, you can't you can't demote them.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: I really like that as a theory.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yeah, that makes a lot of sense actually.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_00: You've absolutely nailed that.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_02: That's that's gonna be like a new like a new uh uh kind of oh what's it I don't know what I'm talking about.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, school of of thought of they'll be like, yeah, once you've reached dog level, yeah.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_00: I feel like it'll be quite a long way up from humans to get to dogs.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: I do still think cats have a better life than humans.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, interesting.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_00: I like cats, but they're also like I like cats, but they're also evil.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you don't think humans are more evil than cats.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_00: How many wars have cats started?
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_00: Um I'm just imagining cats starting war now.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: Also, have you have you ever watched I can't remember what it's called?
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_00: It might have just been cats v dogs or cats versus dogs or something.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: And they terrible movie cats as being evil, but it's like, are they evil or are they just smarter than dogs?
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_02: Like Yeah, I think so.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_02: They're just smart, aren't they?
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: We're just like, oh, you're a sweet baby angel, and I need to protect you at all costs.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_02: I just love every cat video of when like you see them like on a table and you just see them push something slowly and then slower and you just see them staring at the human.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: They're like, Don't do it, don't do it, and they're like amazing.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_02: My favourite videos.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think those and videos of cats jumping at cucumbers, because that's like hilarious that they're like they are so smart, but they just can't figure out cucumbers.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_02: I don't know why it's only cucumbers as well.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, super odd.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_02: I also I also love the the I don't know if this is true, but I've heard that cats think that humans are giant cats and just like dumb, dumb human, dumb cats.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: Is that where they bring you stuff, right?
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_00: Like birds and stuff.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_02: They think we're just dumb, dumb giant cats.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_00: That is funny.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_00: I think that my dogs, both of them, have thought that horses are big dogs.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_02: Well, like in this, like the donkey, I think the donkey is he thinks the donkey is yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_00: He's like horse dog, horse dog.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_00: Like, I think that they've both because my parents like live in the countryside, and whenever I'd like walk them around horses, it's just like a thing where like you can see them looking at them like what are you?
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_00: In a way, in a way that you wouldn't with humans and stuff they don't do that.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_00: They're like, Oh, you're clearly different.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_00: But with other with horses in particular, they're just like, You're not quite me, but you're not a human.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_00: Like so true.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think every dog does that.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_02: It's so funny.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_00: It is really funny to watch, especially because they're so big, you're like, this clearly isn't you.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know how you've got this in your head, but you're an idiot.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_02: Um okay, let's let's kind of like wrap this uh the this part up then.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_02: So like what um what is your favourite section of this of this of the film?
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_02: Which story is 100%.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_00: It's the bit from the fire to is that true?
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_00: I actually think my favourite like scene in the film is when Bailey defends Ethan's mum and then Ethan's.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_00: That's like it's a real emotional kind of it is, yeah.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_00: You feel like you've had the the requisite kind of build-up, so you do believe it, you're like, Oh yeah, this is really tough and like horrible, but it's nice that like they stood up and you feel like Bailey gave Ethan the strength to stand up to his dad, which is nice.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's probably my favourite like standalone scene of the film.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_00: But I think that the bit that for me will always always like stick with me is like a Bailey running after Ethan's car when he's driving away.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kill me, like absolutely murder me.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_00: So sad.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: Um also Ethan's such a dick for not giving Bailey a lift back to the farm.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_00: That dog ran for miles and he's like, Ran, yeah, go home.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what?
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_02: But then because he runs through the field first, but then you see him walking back, he just walks down the road.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_02: So he's just walking the whole way back.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_00: So sad.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_02: He's not even cutting anything off now.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_00: He's not cutting any corners or anything this time, he's just like a long melancholy walk back.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_02: Because the bit the reason he does that, he's like, oh, he's playing fetch with me, we haven't done that in so long.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_00: No, oh my god, it's so sad.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: And then the bit where Ethan comes back from college and he gets back in time.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: I think you just have like such a catharsis there of being like, Oh, like thank God they were with each other at the end.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, I it's like probably like a sense of just being like, appreciate what you have while it's there, kind of thing.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_00: Like um, like he could have he could have come home more regularly and seen Bailey more, and I think he probably will regret not doing that.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, that's probably the best section in terms of like that's the best section.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: I think that is probably my favourite section out of it as well.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_00: It was just an absolute fucking travesty to your emotions, though, isn't it?
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_00: Like it's just oh yeah, absolutely.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_02: I was just sitting there like, no, no, no, and the thing is, like the whole time you know it's coming.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, because also like we're all adults and you've all like lost, like if you have a dog, you've you've probably lost a dog at some point.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_00: Like, you know the lifespan of a dog is less than a human, so you are like waiting for that to happen, like, and just you're so painfully aware of how painful it would be for him to lose his dog because he loves his dog so much.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: Oh it's a lot to process.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, like I think that's why they kind of like do the ending of oh he's he's with him and he's happy again.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he knows it's Bailey.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_00: And Bailey's like, he's so happy that Ethan's there, and just his only concern is that Ethan isn't as happy as he wants him to be.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_00: He's like devastating.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_00: He's like, oh my god.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_00: I had to be with my dog when we put him down, and like literally, if I'd have seen this film before that, whatever.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_02: It's it's bad.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's really bad.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_02: It's rough, yeah.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_00: Tough stuff.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I I really enjoyed this movie.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_02: I don't even think like you have to I I think anyone who's had an animal, or even a especially a dog, is would enjoy this movie.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_00: I think it would be really hard not to.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_02: I don't I I so I I find the I I'm a little bit like annoyed about the the fact that they've they've put it down because of the melodrama.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_02: Because like so I used basically I in film school I had to watch a lot of like 1950s melodrama stuff that was also like so well loved and well received and everything.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, why is that okay?
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_02: Because just because it's older.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_00: Like Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_00: It's a good point.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_00: Like, and if you think about anything that like like basically anything Jimmy Stewart's ever been in.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: Like, and and they're great films.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_00: Like, I I personally like have a real like passion and love for like old musicals.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_00: Like, I love them.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_00: And the reason I love them is because they're so authentically what they are.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_00: They don't put any bells and whistles on, they're not trying to be something they're not.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_00: They are literally like, I'm gonna tell you a story, I'm gonna tell you in a way that is gonna make you feel joyful when I want you to feel joyful, when I want you to feel sad.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: Like, that's life.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_00: Like, that is if it's the gamut of emotions that you run through while watching this film is life.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_00: Like fine, there are points where it's heightened for dramatic effect, but like it's for dramatic effect.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_02: And it works.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_02: So why is that bad?
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_00: I completely agree.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_00: I think that's like so accurate.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_00: And I think that like anyone I think that if you're watching this, the only people who wouldn't like this are people who are like trying so desperately hard to be cool.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like, you know what, you're not cool, and you never will be.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_00: I'm like, this film is cool.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_00: True to yourself is cool.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: Sound like my own mum.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_02: Be yourself, just be yourself.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_02: By the way, is that a is that a vertigo poster behind you?
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_00: Um it is, yes.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_02: Ah, nice.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_00: In my in my kitchen.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_02: I have one right there as well.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_00: Oh no way.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_02: I'll show you, but I'd have to like it's such an awkward angle for the camera to like flip the whole camera around.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_00: Without proof I'm totally kidding.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_02: It's not quite the same poster, that's why.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, which one is it?
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_02: Well, it's got it's got like a yellow bar at the bottom that says vertigo in it, but uh it's pretty much the same.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_02: Uh it's got that on it, and then it's got like the two of them hugging at the front.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_00: Oh nice, that sounds cool.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a nice poster.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, so you read so again, vertigo, very melodramatic.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_00: Very melodramatic, yeah.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_02: And well received.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, people don't have a problem with it when it's like old You're right though, like there is like a letter.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: I I have a big problem with like anything that's like to do with like the filmic canon or like the literary canon, any kind of canon, let canonic talk.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: And like, who gets to decide that these films are good or bad?
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, reviewers, they tend to have like I don't think you should let comedians pick who are good comedians.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't think that's fair, I think you're jaded, I think you've seen too much comedy, I I don't think it's right.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_00: Like, I think you shouldn't you also shouldn't let reviewers decide who's good comedians, you should let audiences decide who are good comedians.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_00: And I think that like it's the same for films.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_00: If you're if you're someone who has studied film intrinsically, like in a lot of detail, then I think that like you're automatically not the right audience for that film anymore because like nobody's creating very few people are creating films for film nerds, like they're just creating it for a mass audience, aren't they?
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_00: Like that's what And what's wrong with that?
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_02: No, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_00: It's the people who watch it are good people, good cinema going people who don't deserve the disrespect of being told that their taste is too melodramatic.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I think that leads leads us into like the the final section then, which is um do you have a film that is well loved and received by critics and fans that you actually think is a bad movie?
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_00: So I have two answers for that.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_02: Great, give both of them.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_00: One of them is um very short, because I actually haven't re-watched this.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_00: Basically, I think I'm wrong on this.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_00: Uh I went to watch There Will Be Blood at the cinema with my family, and I really did not want to go and watch There Will Be Blood.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_02: Like what a family film!
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_00: Well, my dad is like really into films, like so we quite frequently would go and watch good films together as a family.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_00: That day I wanted to go and see something else, and I can't remember what it was.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_00: It might have been just my luck with Chris Pine and Listen.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_02: Former film on this.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_02: Um Formerly Defended on it.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_00: It was something like it was something like that ilk, like it was like a rom-com that I wanted to go see, but they didn't.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_02: But how old were you at the time as well?
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_00: I was maybe like 12, 13.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_02: That makes sense then, yeah.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_00: Um maybe I was a bit older, I can't remember, but I was like young enough to like want to.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_02: 2007, I want to say.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_00: If I work this out, I'm gonna.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_02: I wanna say it was 2007.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take if I take this away and I was like 18, I'm gonna be so embarrassed.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, I was like 14.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, yeah, I was gonna say, I was I was trying to work it out because I was like, I think I was 18.
- 1:24:26SPEAKER_02: So I was like, yeah, 2007.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_00: I that's fine.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm allowed to want to see a rom com when I was 14.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_02: No, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_02: I was just wondering like how old we I I was wondering if you were like really young watching there will be blood as well.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_00: They they they would have like snuck me into a 15.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_00: But not probably an 18 to be honest.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_02: Like I didn't even think about the like the the rating of it.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was just thinking about if you'd seen it.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_00: Um but I just remember being like sat in the cinema actively wanting to hate that film.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_02: Well, fair enough.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_02: It's very long and very slow.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_00: It's very long and very slow.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_02: And nobody talks for the first 30 minutes.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_00: 30 minutes.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_00: I was like, do you have any idea how much sparkling dialogue I could be hearing?
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_00: Like it's actually outrageous.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_00: Also, like I've never been a huge fan of Westerns, like that's something I can't really get into.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_00: Um, mainly because I just feel like they're so, so aggressively masculine.
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_00: Like a lot of the time I'm like, oh, I just don't care enough about men to want to watch this.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_00: Like, sorry.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_00: Um or the other one, which is a less personal experience and more like I think a genuine criticism of a film, is I think on our land is atrocious.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_00: I think it's so bad.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_02: This is about the fourth time this has come up.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_00: It came up because I think it came out the same year as this, which I could be wrong, but I guess at the same time.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_00: Let me check.
- 1:25:50SPEAKER_00: Blood Knight was 2017 as well, right?
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_00: And that was the same year.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_02: Oh wait, 2016.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 2017.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_02: Well, like the beginning of 2017 it came out.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_00: I just think like, and it's for all the reasons that I've said before, like, I basically think like I love old musicals.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_00: I love Anna Stone, I love Ryan Reynolds, um Ryan Reynolds, I think.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_01: Gosling.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_00: Um I love Ryan Gosling.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_00: I think that they have great chemistry together in other films, but I think I cannot care make myself care about these two self-absorbed, terrible characters.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: The whole film feels like it feels like a Michael Buble version of a Frank Sebastian song.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_00: Like that is That's so perfect.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_02: That's a perfect description.
- 1:26:34SPEAKER_00: It's the exact feeling that I get when I watch La La Lam, where I'm just like, you've taken all of these elements of something that could be and was amazing.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_00: Like, musicals from the 40s and 50s are so good.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_00: They are, yeah.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_00: All of that and just put no emotional like love into it or any kind of.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_00: So it always feels like the people are like kind of embarrassed to be there, and you're like, you can't be embarrassed.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_00: Like, the new West Side story is incredible as a film, brilliant filmmaking, and you feel like they're taking it seriously as a musical.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_00: So it's not like I'm just against new musicals because I'm not, although there are a lot of really bad ones.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_00: But La La Land is like it just you can't polish a turd and play a turd.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I hate it so much.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_02: Have you ever seen what he kind of based it off of?
- 1:27:17SPEAKER_02: The film that he kind of based it off of.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_02: The Umbrellas of Sherbourk.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_02: No, I haven't.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, so it's like it's basic, like the style of it is such a rip-off of that.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_02: It's like it's an homage to it, essentially, but it's like it's such a rip-off of it.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_00: Does that feel more genuine though?
- 1:27:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh, it's so like I think you would really like it.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I probably would.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I honestly a sixties French musical.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_00: I love, I love like anything with Gene Kelly in it, I love like a.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you I think you'll really like it then.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_00: I'll watch it.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_00: That sounds really good.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_02: Also, well, one thing I will warn you though the entire thing, it there's no there's no speaking, it's entirely sung.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_02: No, no, the whole thing is sung.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't mind that.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_02: But like even like normal dialogue is just they're they're singing it.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_02: I don't I So it doesn't necessarily rhyme even, but they're just singing the whole thing.
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but as long as they do that with like they just commit to it.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, they fully commit to it.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_02: I think it's great, but like some people have an issue with it.
- 1:28:20SPEAKER_00: But Yeah, I don't have an issue with that at all.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_00: I think like what I have an issue with more is like oh the like lack of follow-through.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh you've taken an idea that that you like think will be kind of good and popular and gimmicky and you've like put these two big stars in it that you think like will make it kind of sell.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_00: It just all feels like it's like such a a horse that's geared to like make money rather than like actually be like joyful.
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_00: And a musical to me should be like joyful.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_02: I fully agree.
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_02: I'm such a huge fan of like like the same as you, I'm such a huge fan of those 40s and 50s musicals as well.
- 1:28:55SPEAKER_02: So and again, I think because they just like they embraced they they embrace what it was, they just they just were what they were, and they just yeah.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_00: Even when they suck, like Brigadoon is objectively bad.
- 1:29:07unknown: Yeah.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_00: But like as a film, you're like, everyone in this was having so much fun, and like it is it's not trying to be anything above its station, like it's literally like, yeah, I am what I am, I'm Brigadoon.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_00: Like you're like, yeah, I'd rather watch Brigadoon 400 times than watch La La Land once.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_00: We'll say that, it's 100% true.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's great.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_00: Um sorry for going on such a rant about La La Land.
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_02: No, no, I that's what I want.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what I want.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_02: I I I fully agree with you.
- 1:29:41SPEAKER_02: I've just I've just run out of things to say about La La Land because it's been brought up so much on this podcast.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah, it's so bad.
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_00: It's so bad.
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_00: I'm very glad that people are like finally admitting that it's bad.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's still quite a contentious thing to say.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_02: There's still people that absolutely love it.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_02: Like if they people will either love it or they hate it.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's m it's the marmite of filmmaking.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_02: It is, yeah.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_02: And I I've I've said this on the podcast before, but like the first time I saw it, I went to I saw it at the London Film Festival, and uh I say this purely because I think I got swept up in like the fanfare of it, and I was like, oh, this is great, and then I and then I watched it again, I was like, no, this actually sucks.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_00: See, I went to see it at the cinema and stains not the same, and I was very much like this is the worst film I think I've seen in a really long time.
- 1:30:35SPEAKER_02: But I also, one thing I'm very proud of was that this is the nerdiest thing about this is the nerdiest thing, but I I don't usually make bets, but I put a bet on for Moonlight to win best picture.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_02: But I put I put this bet on in like October, and then it I and but because I put it on in like October time, it was such a high, it was like such terrible odds, so it was like 20 to 1 or something like that.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_02: And I was like, no, I really think Moonlight's gonna win.
- 1:31:03SPEAKER_02: And then I saw and then I was watching the Oscars live when that all that happened.
- 1:31:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was.
- 1:31:07SPEAKER_02: I was like, for fuck's sake, Lala has won.
- 1:31:10SPEAKER_00: And then it came back.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_00: How good was that moment?
- 1:31:12SPEAKER_02: Like I was so happy.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, so good.
- 1:31:15SPEAKER_00: I because I very much was like probably quite pessimistic and just like obviously La La Land is gonna win.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:31:20SPEAKER_00: But Moonlight fully should win.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_00: Like Moonlight.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_02: I was exactly the same, yeah.
- 1:31:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I did.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_00: I wish I'd had your confidence in humanity, but we've just been through Brexit, so I was like, oh god, so it was like obviously Lala Land's gonna win.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I'd seen I'd seen Moonlight and I was like, oh, this is so good.
- 1:31:38SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna put and I think I put like a it must have been five pounds to put down because I won£100.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_00: So it must have been bonus day for you, that's incredible.
- 1:31:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so first of all, I was like, oh Lala and I wanted one, of course.
- 1:31:51SPEAKER_02: Oh I won, uh I've lost the five pounds, that's fine, whatever.
- 1:31:54SPEAKER_02: Then it then that then I started seeing because I was like also on a delay watching it, so I started seeing all these Twitter comments about it.
- 1:32:01SPEAKER_00: Being like I was like, wait, what's happening?
- 1:32:05SPEAKER_02: I thought they were joking.
- 1:32:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, literally, I remember that as being one of the best moments, like on live TV that I've ever seen, like just being being like, oh my gosh! And I do feel bad for the makers of Moonlight, um, for the makers of La La Land, but then they won in other categories, like they didn't need it, like and it did not deserve to win.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_02: It did deserve to win.
- 1:32:28SPEAKER_02: No, it didn't deserve to win at all.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_00: No, it did not deserve to win.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_02: It only it was only up there because it was an homage to like all those old 50s classic musicals, which like fine, but it wasn't yeah, it wasn't good.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_00: It wasn't good enough, it didn't stand up with them, it's not the same.
- 1:32:42SPEAKER_02: And I don't think it's gonna be remembered over time as well.
- 1:32:45SPEAKER_00: I would be surprised if it was, because also the songs are bad.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_02: The songs are terrible.
- 1:32:52SPEAKER_00: The best thing about it is the costuming, and if that is what you have to say about a film, that's so tragic.
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_02: Like I think it's the costuming itself is fine as well.
- 1:33:01SPEAKER_02: I don't think that's great.
- 1:33:03SPEAKER_00: No, it's just the best thing about it.
- 1:33:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_02: Go watch a dog's purpose instead.
- 1:33:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, if you've got Lala Land on your list, then just remove it and add Dog's Purpose.
- 1:33:14SPEAKER_00: It's so good.
- 1:33:14SPEAKER_02: The Dog's Purpose has more melodrama and it will make you cry.
- 1:33:18SPEAKER_00: What's Lala Lad gonna do?
- 1:33:19SPEAKER_00: Make you cry that you've wasted your time.
- 1:33:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:33:21SPEAKER_02: Don't don't cry over white man about white man saving jazz.
- 1:33:25SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:33:26SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:33:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, so annoying.
- 1:33:29SPEAKER_00: Also, in a dog's purpose, you kind of get the same you get a better payoff with the couple, right?
- 1:33:34SPEAKER_00: Because like they fall apart and then eventually reunited because true love is real.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_02: True love is real and reincarnation is real as a dog.
- 1:33:44SPEAKER_00: As a dog, yeah.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_02: Um okay, so how can we find you online and do you have anything you want to promote?
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so I um would like to promote I'm doing an Edinburgh Friend show in August with Molly Lee Moy, which would be great if you could come if you're in Edinburgh, that would be amazing.
