- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:08kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for September 19th.
- 0:13Today is National Overthinkers Day, and if you're already
- 0:17wondering whether you qualify as an overthinker, you probably do.
- 0:23If you're wondering whether wondering about whether you're
- 0:26an overthinker means you're overthinking, well, welcome to
- 0:30the club. This holiday exists to shine a
- 0:33light on something. Millions of us struggle with the
- 0:36tendency to analyze, reanalyze, and then analyze our analysis
- 0:42until we're completely paralyzed by your own thoughts.
- 0:46It's the mental loop where we replay conversations, second
- 0:50guess decisions, and imagine 17 different scenarios for every
- 0:55simple situation. Overthinking isn't inherently
- 1:00bad. It shows we care that we're
- 1:03thoughtful people who want to make good decisions.
- 1:06But like many good traits, it becomes problematic when taken
- 1:10to extremes. National Overthinkers Day is
- 1:14both a gentle acknowledgement of this very human tendency and a
- 1:18reminder that sometimes the best action is to stop thinking and
- 1:23just act. And that brings us to today's
- 1:26quote from Anise Nim, who once said we don't see things as they
- 1:32are, we see things as we are. Nim's observation gets right to
- 1:39the heart of why we overthink. When we're caught in that mental
- 1:43spiral, we're not really analyzing the situation anymore.
- 1:48We're analyzing our own fears and securities and past
- 1:51experiences projected onto the present moment.
- 1:55Think about the last time you overthought something.
- 1:58Maybe it was a text that you sent that didn't get an
- 2:02immediate response or a comment someone made that you kept
- 2:06dissecting. In these moments, you weren't
- 2:09seeing the situation clearly. You were seeing it through the
- 2:12lens of your own anxieties and assumptions.
- 2:17Person who didn't text back immediately might have been in a
- 2:19meeting comment that seemed loaded with meaning might have
- 2:24been completely innocent. But your overthinking brain
- 2:28takes these neutral situations and colors them with your own
- 2:32internal state and understood that true clarity comes from not
- 2:38thinking harder, but from recognizing how our own
- 2:43perspective shapes everything we see.
- 2:46The antidote to overthinking isn't more analysis, it's
- 2:50self-awareness about how our thoughts create our own reality.
- 2:55As you navigate today, pay attention to moments when your
- 3:00mind starts spinning in that familiar overthinking pattern.
- 3:05When you catch yourself there, remember Nim's wisdom.
- 3:09You might not be seeing the situation clearly.
- 3:13Try this. When you notice yourself over
- 3:16thinking, take a step back and ask what would this look like if
- 3:22I weren't worried about it? Or how might someone else see
- 3:27this situation? Sometimes the simplest
- 3:29explanation is the right one, and the complexity is all in our
- 3:35heads. Give yourself permission to act
- 3:38on an incomplete. Give yourself permission to act
- 3:42on incomplete information sometimes.
- 3:46Not every decision needs to be perfect, and not every situation
- 3:50needs to be fully analyzed to death.
- 3:54That's going to do it for today. I'm Andrew Mcgiven signing off
- 3:57for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:02Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
