- 0:00So I'm Lachland from Deprivation play lead guitar and they've been been going for what
- 0:07eighteen years almost like founding members. Yeah a long time. Yeah, and
- 0:14I'm Jesse I played the bass. I've been in the band for ten years
- 0:18and the biggest fanboy still with the band. So yeah, good times,
- 0:24thanks for joining using guys, excuse mate my pleasure. So first, a
- 0:30boy is welcome home after doing Australia Proud Whack in twenty twenty three, have
- 0:34your feet touched aground yet? Yeah it's been a while now, but yeah
- 0:41it was. It took a bit to get off that high for sure.
- 0:45Yeah, we're all a big We're a little bit grumpy when we got back
- 0:48for at least a month. Still want to be doing. There's those who
- 0:54don't know Deprivation wonder this year's Whack and Metal Battle Australia and News Yell and
- 1:00Buck in May and represent Australia whacking this year. So let's start there.
- 1:03Made like after you said in the finals, like did you think you've done
- 1:07enough to win? Oh? I personally reckon. We absolutely killed it on
- 1:12the final and it was just that war. But there was some bloody fantastic
- 1:18competition, but it was that whole what's going to happen? What's going to
- 1:23happen? And we're all there were all put on our a game. So
- 1:27obviously it worked out well for us. But yeah, it was a very
- 1:32tight competition. But yeah, I personally believably came out on top because we've
- 1:38we've just got the most energy on stage out of a lot of bands.
- 1:42Yeah. Yeah, we definitely played as good as we've ever played that night,
- 1:49so there was there was no reason to think that we didn't put our
- 1:52best effort in. So yeah, that best and more were fucking good.
- 1:57Yeah. Yeah, body was very very tight. It was very good.
- 2:01Though. How long did you actually have to wait to find out? Did
- 2:05you find out that night or did you have to sort of sleep on it
- 2:07for a bit? I found out the next day, So I was the
- 2:12contact for for the band and yeah, Bailey called us. The called me
- 2:16the next day. Well, Lachlan was still in Sydney after having a big,
- 2:23big party. I'd already been back, I've already come back to Newcastle,
- 2:25just sitting in the couch and was like, oh, got a phone
- 2:30number that I don't recognize, but a better answer this see how it goes
- 2:35and it was that, yeah, just oh my god, this is actually
- 2:38happening. And then told all the boys and they didn't believe me. Yeah,
- 2:46no one believe I do like to talk a lot of ships, but
- 2:52yeah, and I was like no, no, no, seriously, we've
- 2:53we've we've done it. And it was there lots of tears, lots of
- 2:58extreme happiness. It was the what a bloody awesome time. Yeah, but
- 3:05of course winning was just the start of it. Like, then you had
- 3:07to actually get to Germany. So how did you go about raising money to
- 3:10make the trip? Well, our good friend Nicole from the from the Basement,
- 3:16one of the owners of the Basement, she set up a go funding
- 3:20for us, which helped out fantastically, just you know, get get a
- 3:27little bit of flights paid for and all that jazz, because it's not the
- 3:32cheapest trip over to Germany. But we put it together and obviously not a
- 3:38lot of time to put it together, but made it happen. And yeah,
- 3:42we're very thankful for the Basement for sort helping us out with that go
- 3:46funding for us, because yeah, it helped out tremendously. Yeah, and
- 3:53keep in mind we only had like forty days or less to gather those ones
- 3:58together and make sure lastports were all good and yeah, so it was a
- 4:01bit of a battle, but yeah, paid off and worked out well.
- 4:06From all reports, Whackon was wet and buddy this year. Like, was
- 4:10it as bad as photos made a look? Man? We when we were
- 4:15driving, yes, yeah, I think that driving there, we were getting
- 4:21messages they're saying, if you are traveling to work and you should stop what
- 4:27you're doing, Like it's it is too wet, we're not letting people in.
- 4:31And their whole thing is we play rain or shine And it was that
- 4:36rainy that the rain or shine was getting a little bit tedious. But we
- 4:43Yeah, we finally got in. We got our big V got pulled in
- 4:46by a tractor. That was a first for I think all of us getting
- 4:50pulled in by a big tractor. Yeah, and it definitely pulled us in.
- 4:56I had no control of the car ragonus three am in the morning.
- 5:01We got pulled in. We were waiting in line like this huge ars line
- 5:05for everyone to get tied in. Waited there for like three hours to get
- 5:09ted in and then yeah, fucking so wed. It did end up and
- 5:16Paul Warkin like the solid eighty five ninety thousand tickets and I think the first
- 5:23three days they it was forty fifty thousand, so substantial loss on their partner.
- 5:31A lot of people just ended up not coming as well, but it
- 5:34did dry up by the last couple of days when some of the bigger bands
- 5:39came through, like Iron Maiden and Mega Death, which was great and it
- 5:42probably ended up getting into about the let's go sixty five seventy thousand mark like
- 5:47that. It definitely ended up being still a massive show, like anything,
- 5:53bigger than anything that we've ever experienced before. There's a lot of people,
- 6:00so you made it to waken. But then you had another competition of sorts
- 6:03for the international finals. So how was that experience? That was a surprise
- 6:11for us when we got over them. Oh that's right, we're doing another
- 6:15competition. We had a little idea, but it was like far out thirty
- 6:20of the best bands, like the best underground bands in the world to compete
- 6:25against, and yeah, what an experience. Got to meet some cool people,
- 6:30good friends from Turkey now good friends from Lithuania, Latvia. Yeah,
- 6:39we're international friends. It's good too. It was really good to just hang
- 6:45out with all those people in the VIP area back at Barakan. You came
- 6:50temper that, which was a massive achievement. But did that qualify you for
- 6:55the main stage or was that part of your prize for winning the train finals?
- 7:00So yeah, the tenth place was like one and only performance in Vakan.
- 7:06Was was the battle kind of thing like so al yeah, jadges were
- 7:11watching us and all the other bands play their performance and then they voted on
- 7:15yeah the top the top ones from there, but yeah, no extra shows
- 7:19after that, but but still tenth is just amazing for us. So yeah,
- 7:26yeah, absolutely stoked. So stoked. Yeah, good on us.
- 7:32Tell us about the actual setter wacking guys, Like, was it everything you
- 7:36imagined? Man? That was the It was the biggest stage we've ever played
- 7:43on, biggest crowd we've ever played too. It was just such a surreal
- 7:46experience going on or something so well organized everything. Yeah, everything was just
- 7:54huge, like the first time we've ever played on a stage that's got side
- 7:59feel. So just the amount of sound that was just on the stage was
- 8:03phenomenal. And then I think the coolest thing was just you know having that
- 8:09type of those type of people at the crowds just everybody loves metal. It's
- 8:13not like a mixed bill festival. Like you've got metal heads there the whole
- 8:18time. And the command you could have over the crowd was awesome. Being
- 8:24able to go like, you know, let's go hey hey, and every
- 8:28single person does it. That was awesome. And we even did the even
- 8:31did the side to side hands and it was yeah, far out. I
- 8:37can't believe that we've managed to have such a good control over crowd. It
- 8:43wasn't too hard to win them over, that's for sure. Like it was
- 8:46just metal, like every single fucking band that they're watching and there they're dancing
- 8:52in the mary. Yeah, it was a drunken nuts and I think we're
- 9:00definitely we're definitely please the metal crowd that were there because all the a lot
- 9:07of the bands before us in the metal Battles were that metal core or not
- 9:11just not quite you know, straight up heavy metal dude. And yeah,
- 9:16you could definitely see the long hairs come out and in there in flocks just
- 9:22having a good swing. It was awesome, no swing kick. You also
- 9:31released the live music video for Bird, which was recorded at Whacking, So
- 9:35was that something you went over there planning to do or was it circumstance you
- 9:41go loker. Basically like they filmed, they filmed the whole set for every
- 9:48band and after the show, they'd come up to you and say, which
- 9:50song would you like to be featured on the YouTube channel that we're going to
- 9:56pull out? So we just chose that one because I don't know, I
- 10:03think we collectively, well, I think there was the least amount of mistakes
- 10:07in that song. Let's go with that one. Let's go. Yeah.
- 10:13That was yeah, a hard hitting song and yeah, just good crowd participation
- 10:18and yeah, come out well. So but the whole set came out really
- 10:20well too, So yeah, I agree, And they chose that one because
- 10:24it's probably one of the new ones, newer songs as well. We don't
- 10:30we've got enough live footage of the other songs, so better get some of
- 10:33the newer stuff out there. Yeah, good place to do it. And
- 10:39I believe you had it back in the studio this December to record some another
- 10:43single. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah, I'm pretty excited. Pretty
- 10:48much got the fundamentals down on it now, so we're just making it all
- 10:52pretty and putting extra layers and ship on it. So yeah, it's going
- 10:56to be a heavy one, that's for sure. And is that going to
- 11:01be a stand alone single or part of a bigger picture? Definitely, yeah,
- 11:07Locker, Yeah, stand alone single for now, but we'll probably make
- 11:11it into a bigger picture later. We're Yeah, it's just one of those
- 11:16things like albums are good, but it's you know, people get bored very
- 11:22quickly these days, which is a shame because I love listening to the albums
- 11:26starting to finish and then repeat it and let's do it again. But you
- 11:30know, I'm not everybody's like me or Locker and can listen to albums on
- 11:37repeat. But yeah, so stand alone single and we'll see how we go
- 11:41from there. I have to, you know, people have to listen to
- 11:43it, I suppose, and we'll go, Okay, we better do some
- 11:46more cold now before we let you go. Guys, we started doing three
- 11:50new Spotify playlists to help listeners get in touch with the bands. I guess,
- 11:54so just using your own songs. Give us one for a playlist to
- 11:58get the party started, one for a playlist to save your marriage, and
- 12:01one for a playlist to potentially end your marriage. Got a party, one
- 12:09started party, It'd have to be all dead or something like that, wouldn't
- 12:13it. Yeah, Yeah, that's got the groove. Yeah. And what
- 12:18was the second one, Chris, I save your marriage. I don't think
- 12:22any of it. I know one that I know one that will end the
- 12:28marriage. That will be three cage through the rib, cage for sure to
- 12:33end the marriage. And maybe the maybe the you know, save one murder
- 12:37your excuses. Oh yeah, good, good, good, good choice good
- 12:43yeah. I reckon those three will work for you guys. All right,
- 12:46well, thanks very much for your time to thank congratulations on your achievements this
- 12:48year, and let's hope things kids going on the up and up for you
