Speaker 2: lot's going to change. Sunny, warm today, high in the

• 2:39
Speaker 2: We may very well be used to calling it by
• 2:41
Speaker 2: its new name, the Vandalia Health Center by that point.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: The show is coming up on December 3rd, 730. Joel
• 2:49
Speaker 2: Hoekstra is a guitarist with TSO, and he joins us
• 2:51
Speaker 2: now via the Guarantee Bank hotline. Good morning, sir. Welcome
• 2:55
  Speaker 2: to the show.
• 2:56
  Speaker 4: Hey, good morning.
• 2:57
Speaker 3: Thanks so much for having me on.
• 2:58
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. We're looking forward to seeing
• 3:01
Speaker 2: you folks in the capital city on December 3rd. The
• 3:04
Speaker 2: tour is called the ghost of Christmas Eve, the best
• 3:06
Speaker 2: of TSO and more. And it's all new this time around.
• 3:10
Speaker 2: And I was looking at your tour schedule, Joel, pretty intense.
• 3:15
  Speaker 2: 97 shows, 56 cities in 42 days. That's some pretty
• 3:19
Speaker 2: hardcore touring right there.
• 3:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a labor of love, though. It's all good.
• 3:24
Speaker 3: You know, you can't complain when you're doing what you love.
• 3:27
Speaker 3: And certainly looking forward to.
• 3:28
  Speaker 4: Getting out there.
• 3:29
Speaker 3: If you haven't seen TSO before, The Ghost of Christmas
• 3:32
Speaker 3: Eve is a story that's on the front half of
• 3:34
  Speaker 3: the show.
• 3:34
  Speaker 4: It's a very unique show.
• 3:37
Speaker 3: So it's obviously accompanied by music, so a rock opera,
• 3:40
Speaker 3: if you will. And The Ghost of Christmas Eve is
• 3:42
  Speaker 3: a best of or a greatest hit. So it's a
• 3:44
Speaker 3: great opportunity to come out. and, you know, get acclimated,
• 3:47
Speaker 3: hear the songs that made us who we are today.
• 3:50
Speaker 3: And then the second half of the show, it's a
• 3:51
Speaker 3: little bit more of like a concert format where it
• 3:54
Speaker 3: focuses on the magnitude of the production. And, you know,
• 3:57
Speaker 3: we like to think we're nice to listen to, but
• 3:59
  Speaker 3: it's an amazing.
• 4:00
Speaker 4: Show to look at.
• 4:01
  Speaker 2: It's a spectacle, man.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: We've got a video wall the width of the arena.
• 4:05
Speaker 3: We've got an incredible laser light show happening, tons of
• 4:08
  Speaker 3: pyro going off.
• 4:10
  Speaker 4: We've got moving.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: Hydraulic lifts that the performers play on off and out
• 4:13
Speaker 3: over the audience or in the back of the arena
• 4:15
  Speaker 3: going up.
• 4:16
Speaker 4: To the upper deck.
• 4:17
Speaker 3: At times we'll run down into the crowd and play
• 4:20
Speaker 3: directly in front of you, hand you a guitar pick
• 4:22
  Speaker 3: and whatnot.
• 4:23
  Speaker 4: It snows indoors.
• 4:24
Speaker 3: I mean, last year they even incorporated drones. flying around
• 4:28
Speaker 3: the performers and taking various shapes and lighting up. It's
• 4:31
Speaker 3: just incredible to be a part of it. It's just
• 4:35
Speaker 3: some guy who started out to play guitar.
• 4:37
Speaker 2: I'll get to your background here in a moment. I
• 4:39
Speaker 2: said to somebody earlier, if you've never seen TSO, calling
• 4:42
Speaker 2: it a concert is really underselling it, Joel, because it
• 4:46
Speaker 2: is a true experience.
• 4:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely an amazing production to be a part of.
• 4:52
Speaker 3: I like to think of it as a show more
• 4:55
Speaker 3: than a concert. It's really entertaining. Those that don't know,
• 4:59
  Speaker 3: it's really an all-ages experience. It's a big family experience
• 5:02
Speaker 3: for many. I mean, we've become a holiday tradition for
• 5:05
Speaker 3: so many. It is, as a guitar player, very unique
• 5:09
Speaker 3: to look out from a stage and see really young
• 5:12
Speaker 3: kids out there, and they love the visual aspect of
• 5:15
Speaker 3: the show. They can be genuinely entertained by all the
• 5:17
Speaker 3: pyro and the lasers and how fun it is to
• 5:19
Speaker 3: look at, all the way to people like myself who
• 5:23
Speaker 3: are like, hey, this is a great rock show to be.
• 5:25
Speaker 4: At, and it's really cool.
• 5:27
Speaker 3: And then the older audiences that love it for the
• 5:30
Speaker 3: holiday story puts them in the holiday spirit. So it's
• 5:33
Speaker 3: got a lot of different things. You know, you could
• 5:35
Speaker 3: ask a lot of people, what was your favorite part?
• 5:37
Speaker 4: You'll get a different answer. So, yeah, again, super, super
• 5:41
  Speaker 4: cool to be.
• 5:41
Speaker 3: A part of, man, especially the longevity. This is our
• 5:45
Speaker 3: 30th anniversary. And we've now sold over, you know, 20
• 5:51
Speaker 3: million tickets as we've been doing this. I mean, it's
• 5:54
Speaker 3: just kind of incredible to be a part of.
• 5:56
Speaker 2: I want to talk a little bit about your background.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: You've been with the group, I think, since 2010. Tell
• 6:01
Speaker 2: us your background and how you arrived to be part
• 6:03
  Speaker 2: of the group.
• 6:06
Speaker 3: You know, surprisingly, it might be the only conventional thing
• 6:10
Speaker 3: about TSO, but it was pretty conventional. The guitar player
• 6:14
Speaker 3: was going to take a year off, and I had
• 6:16
Speaker 3: a couple people in the band recommend me, and I auditioned.
• 6:19
Speaker 3: I had two auditions, one with the music director, and
• 6:22
Speaker 3: then my callback audition was with Paul O'Neill, who founded TSO.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: Set up so many great things. I guess I can
• 6:29
Speaker 3: drop the charity aspect into it here, that a dollar
• 6:32
Speaker 3: from every ticket sold goes to local charities. And we
• 6:35
Speaker 3: make sure we work with local partners so the money
• 6:38
Speaker 3: is well spent, that it goes to people truly in need.
• 6:41
Speaker 3: And so that's something we feel another feather.
• 6:44
Speaker 4: In our cap with that.
• 6:46
Speaker 3: The other thing is that after the show, there's an
• 6:48
Speaker 3: open signing line for everybody to come meet us. And that's,
• 6:51
Speaker 3: you know, with the last free meet and greet you
• 6:53
Speaker 3: saw at a concert these days.
• 6:55
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 6:55
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 6:56
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 6:56
Speaker 3: Paul set up a lot of really smart things when
• 6:59
Speaker 3: he set up TSO. And it's helped us, despite being
• 7:01
Speaker 3: really successful, have like a really good connection with the
• 7:04
Speaker 3: fan base. You know, it feels still, I don't know,
• 7:09
Speaker 3: like a friendship, you know, like a part of a
• 7:10
Speaker 3: holiday tradition to be on a first night basis with
• 7:13
Speaker 3: so many of the fans that have been coming for years.
• 7:15
  Speaker 4: It's cool.
• 7:17
Speaker 2: And you talked about that charitable aspect of it. Over
• 7:19
Speaker 2: $ 20 million you have raised. And I love the fact
• 7:23
Speaker 2: that you said, Joel, that it is, no matter what
• 7:27
Speaker 2: city you go to, it's a local charitable organization of
• 7:30
Speaker 2: some kind. Over $ 20 million for local charities when you
• 7:33
Speaker 2: come into these towns. That's pretty cool stuff, man.
• 7:36
  Speaker 4: It is, man.
• 7:37
  Speaker 3: I mean, I think there's a lot for me to
• 7:40
Speaker 3: love about playing this, being a part of TSO and Um,
• 7:46
Speaker 3: you know, I was just a kid who started off
• 7:47
Speaker 3: playing guitar and hope to make a living playing guitar.
• 7:50
Speaker 3: I didn't necessarily see myself being able to play for
• 7:53
Speaker 3: arenas and be on this stage, this giant production and
• 7:57
Speaker 3: obviously have, you know, thousands or millions of fans. I mean, it's, it's,
• 8:02
Speaker 3: it's a cool experience to be a part of.
• 8:05
Speaker 2: Who were some of the folks that, uh, when you
• 8:07
Speaker 2: were growing up and you were playing guitar that you,
• 8:10
Speaker 2: you looked at and said, that's, that's the kind of
• 8:12
Speaker 2: stuff I want to do. Are there anybody, any of
• 8:14
Speaker 2: those people for you?
• 8:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of funny because I have the right
• 8:18
Speaker 3: background for playing with TSO because my parents are classical people, right?
• 8:22
Speaker 3: And they started me out really young, I think, hoping,
• 8:24
Speaker 3: you know, maybe it'll be a virtuoso. I was on
• 8:27
Speaker 3: cello and piano and I just wasn't into it. I
• 8:29
Speaker 3: just wanted to play baseball. And when I got to
• 8:32
Speaker 3: be 11, I discovered the beauty of rock music. You know,
• 8:37
Speaker 3: I heard ACDC and I saw Angus Young and Back
• 8:40
Speaker 3: in Black. I guess seeing ACDC on the early days
• 8:45
Speaker 3: of MTV was kind of my Beatles, Ed Sullivan moment,
• 8:48
Speaker 3: you know, that the older generation references so many times.
• 8:52
Speaker 3: Seeing him was like, wow, I want to do that.
• 8:54
Speaker 4: I want to be that guy. Um, so, you know,
• 8:57
Speaker 4: I asked my parents for.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: A guitar and I don't think they knew what was
• 9:00
Speaker 3: in store, but, um, you know, soon thereafter when I
• 9:03
Speaker 3: was cranking out Black Sabbath riffs, they were like, oh
• 9:05
Speaker 3: my gosh, what happened?
• 9:07
Speaker 2: Get back to the cello, son. Get back to the cello,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: which you can do Black Sabbath on the cello too.
• 9:12
Speaker 2: You can do it anywhere. We had a question. I
• 9:14
Speaker 2: don't know, uh, that came into the text line here.
• 9:16
Speaker 2: And I know you're very short on time. So we'll
• 9:17
Speaker 2: let you go up to this. Uh, where does the
• 9:19
Speaker 2: name come from? Trans, Trans, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Do you have
• 9:22
Speaker 2: any idea where they came up with the name?
• 9:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny because there's obviously that, I guess, recognition
• 9:31
Speaker 3: of the trans nowadays is such a different thing.
• 9:35
Speaker 4: Since 30 years ago when this started out.
• 9:37
  Speaker 3: But it's a reference to a railway, the Trans-Siberian Railway.
• 9:44
Speaker 3: Paul O'Neill liked it because it was amazing and spectacular
• 9:48
Speaker 3: and that it brought so many people together. He saw
• 9:51
Speaker 3: these concerts or shows as a way to bring people together,
• 9:55
Speaker 3: that there was something in it for everybody, all ages,
• 9:57
  Speaker 3: everybody was welcome.
• 10:00
  Speaker 4: And hopefully something.
• 10:01
Speaker 3: That appealed to everybody, sent everybody away going, that's the
• 10:04
Speaker 3: best show I've ever seen.
• 10:06
Speaker 4: You know, he saw all this, man, which.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: Is incredible, because I think a lot of people were
• 10:10
Speaker 3: like scratching their heads going, huh?
• 10:12
Speaker 4: You think this is going to you think this is
• 10:14
Speaker 4: going to work? This is going to be a holiday tradition.
• 10:16
Speaker 3: And, you know, he he knew the whole time and
• 10:19
Speaker 3: wanted it to be something that lived beyond him.
• 10:21
Speaker 4: And here we are.
• 10:22
Speaker 3: You know, we lost Paul, you know, some years back
• 10:25
Speaker 3: and and we still are, you know, going after trying
• 10:29
Speaker 3: to make him proud.
• 10:30
Speaker 4: And it's really more successful than ever these days. So.
• 10:34
Speaker 3: Incredible to be a part of once again.
• 10:36
Speaker 2: We're looking forward to seeing you again December 3rd here
• 10:40
Speaker 2: in Charleston, the capital city. Joel Hoekstra, a guitarist with TSO.
• 10:44
Speaker 2: Appreciate you being here, my friend. We'll be seeing you
• 10:46
Speaker 2: here real soon. Thanks a lot.
• 10:48
Speaker 4: Real quick, if I.
• 10:49
Speaker 3: May slip in, everybody, when you get your tickets, please
• 10:52
Speaker 3: go to TSOTickets.com. We've gone out of our way to
• 10:56
Speaker 3: make tickets more affordable for everybody. We understand, you know,
• 10:59
Speaker 3: the current state of things for everybody. And, you know,
• 11:04
Speaker 3: you're going to have all these markup sites online, all
• 11:06
  Speaker 3: these resale sites.
• 11:07
  Speaker 4: Avoid it.
• 11:08
Speaker 3: Go to TSOTickets.com if you want to come to the show.
• 11:11
Speaker 3: We've got five different price points that are all under
• 11:14
Speaker 3: $ 100 a seat. on there you know i think as
• 11:17
Speaker 3: cheap as something like 60 bucks or something like that
• 11:19
Speaker 3: so you know we can make it more affordable if
• 11:21
Speaker 3: you want to bring the family we know it's a
• 11:23
  Speaker 3: family event all.
• 11:24

• 11:26
Speaker 2: show thanks a lot now you've got more interviews to
• 11:28
Speaker 2: get to so let's go so good so get to.
• 11:30
Speaker 4: It all right thank you so much man.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: Absolutely 919 again tickets are available tso tickets.com and i
• 11:39
Speaker 2: love the fact that they're doing it that way that
• 11:42
Speaker 2: they're avoiding all of the second, third, fourth party, whatever
• 11:46
Speaker 2: it's called, ticket venues, TSOTickets.com. And again, over $ 20 million
• 11:53
Speaker 2: has been given to local charities when they come into
• 11:56
Speaker 2: these towns. So hope to see everybody there. A lot
• 11:59
Speaker 2: of our listeners are going because our stations have all
• 12:01
Speaker 2: been giving away tickets to the show. It's going to
• 12:03
Speaker 2: be a great, great night over at the Vandalia Health Center.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: Still going. working on it. It's the Ghost of Christmas Eve,
• 12:10
Speaker 2: the best of TSO and more. All new show Thursday,
• 12:13
Speaker 2: December 3rd at the Coliseum Convention Center slash Vandalia Health Center. Great, great, great.
• 12:20
Speaker 2: It's going to be a fantastic show. Tex always wondered
• 12:23
Speaker 2: why they do not include local children's choirs for the performance. Well,
• 12:26
Speaker 2: I'll pass that along to them. Text Dave earlier this year,
• 12:34
Speaker 2: I texted To your show, after one of the several
• 12:36
Speaker 2: accidents on the interstate exchange in Charleston, I made the
• 12:39
Speaker 2: suggestion that, albeit simple, maybe just lower the speed limit.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: Danny Jones and yourself then both said that would not
• 12:44
Speaker 2: be effective. Well, Department of Highways has now done that.
• 12:47
Speaker 2: This time next year, we'll see if it helps. I
• 12:49
Speaker 2: drive that stretch shoe and from work every day already
• 12:52
Speaker 2: legitimately feel safer with everyone or most people slowing down. Well,
• 12:55
Speaker 2: I hope that they are. My, you know, the whole
• 12:58
Speaker 2: thing about lowering the speed limits was, again, people, it's
• 13:02
Speaker 2: also illegal to drink and drive and people still do it.
• 13:05
Speaker 2: And unfortunately, so my point was, as Danny and I
• 13:08
Speaker 2: talked about that, we just simply didn't know. And again,
• 13:10
Speaker 2: it's only been a few days, so we don't know
• 13:12
Speaker 2: what it's what it's going to be. But we were
• 13:14
Speaker 2: just I don't know that in my experience and I've
• 13:17
Speaker 2: been driving around a lot last couple of days. I
• 13:20
Speaker 2: haven't seen people slowing down, but, you know, maybe they will.
• 13:22
Speaker 2: Maybe we start getting law enforcement out there and maybe
• 13:24
Speaker 2: they will. 921, the Dave Allen Show on 580 Live,

• 16:30
Speaker 11: Congratulations again. I know you've been getting a lot of
• 16:32
Speaker 11: congrats on social media, but I just want to tell
• 16:34
Speaker 11: you in person, good for you on your induction.
• 16:37
Speaker 2: You came in just to tell me that. Yeah, that's it.
• 16:39
  Speaker 4: I'm done.
• 16:39
Speaker 2: Well, I appreciate it. I don't want to mess it
• 16:41
Speaker 2: up after that. I appreciate it. Thanks a lot. Give
• 16:44
Speaker 2: us the bio on J.B. Akers. Let's pretend that someone's
• 16:48
Speaker 2: listening today that knows We know you're in office, but
• 16:51
Speaker 2: doesn't know anything about your background. Tell us about JB
• 16:54
  Speaker 2: the guy.
• 16:54
Speaker 11: Yeah, so my family, I wasn't going to do a
• 16:57
Speaker 11: bio today, but it's easy to do because I've got
• 16:59
Speaker 11: to talk about this.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: From time to time.
• 17:00
Speaker 11: My family, blue collar family, growing up, I had almost
• 17:04
Speaker 11: no one in my family who had gone to college.
• 17:06
Speaker 11: My parents always stressed education and bettering yourself. So I
• 17:12
Speaker 11: went to college. I went to law school, and that's
• 17:14
Speaker 11: where I met my wife, Mary Claire Akers, who's a
• 17:16
Speaker 11: judge here in Kanawha County. Thankfully, that was the best
• 17:18
Speaker 11: decision I made, if nothing else, because I got to
• 17:20
  Speaker 11: meet my.
• 17:20
Speaker 2: Wife in law school.
• 17:22
Speaker 11: We moved back to Charleston right after school. We could
• 17:24
Speaker 11: have gone anywhere with those degrees and gotten jobs somewhere else,
• 17:28
Speaker 11: but we didn't want to. We wanted to stay home
• 17:30
Speaker 11: and be around our family and our friends, and we
• 17:33
Speaker 11: do genuinely love this state. And so I came back
• 17:36
Speaker 11: here and opened my own office. I've got a law
• 17:38
Speaker 11: office downtown. We have three kids who we raised here
• 17:42
Speaker 11: in Kanawha County. They all went through Kanawha County schools.
• 17:44
Speaker 11: All three of our kids are now in college, which
• 17:46
Speaker 11: has been super depressing the past couple of months because
• 17:48
Speaker 11: we're now empty nesters.
• 17:49
Speaker 2: And also empty bank accounts at this point.
• 17:52
Speaker 11: That's all three in college. That can be a little challenging.
• 17:54
Speaker 11: So when people talk about affordability, I can relate for
• 17:57
Speaker 11: a lot of different reasons. But our kids are wonderful.
• 18:00
Speaker 11: And I'll tell you this, like where they grew up
• 18:02
Speaker 11: in their neighborhood and their friends had a great friend group.
• 18:05
Speaker 11: It makes me appreciate this place even more. So our
• 18:08
Speaker 11: kids are super happy. My wife and I are super happy.
• 18:11
Speaker 11: And I've been in the legislature now for several years
• 18:14
Speaker 11: and I'm super happy doing that job. And, you know,
• 18:17
Speaker 11: I do appreciate the privilege and I mean that sincerely.
• 18:20
Speaker 11: I think it's a privilege to serve in that position.
• 18:22
Speaker 11: I really, really enjoy the constituent service as part of it.
• 18:28
Speaker 11: I always tell people that if you want to be
• 18:30
Speaker 11: in politics, I think it should be a requirement that
• 18:32
Speaker 11: you like people. That may sound like a kind of a,
• 18:35
Speaker 11: you know, no brainer, but I think you should really
• 18:38
Speaker 11: enjoy talking to and being around people if you want
• 18:40
Speaker 11: to be in office. So when people call me with
• 18:42
Speaker 11: an issue, and it's the same reason I became a lawyer,
• 18:45
Speaker 11: like I had no lawyers in my family whatsoever. And
• 18:47
Speaker 11: my dad was an electrician. My mom went to nursing
• 18:49
Speaker 11: school later in my life. Stepmom's a teacher. My stepdad
• 18:53
Speaker 11: was a small business owner. But I thought being a
• 18:56
Speaker 11: lawyer meant you could go help people. That was a
• 18:58
Speaker 11: perception I had. And in politics, it's the same way.
• 19:01
Speaker 11: So when people call me with a real issue in
• 19:03
Speaker 11: my district, that is actually the part of the job
• 19:04
Speaker 11: I like the most.
• 19:06
Speaker 2: So with all those things, though, I mean, you talked
• 19:08
Speaker 2: about helping people. What was it that went into your
• 19:11
Speaker 2: decision to get involved in politics to begin with? Was
• 19:13
Speaker 2: it just the helping people aspect that you said?
• 19:15
  Speaker 11: I mean, that's a big part of it because I
• 19:17
Speaker 11: do enjoy talking to folks and helping them figure out
• 19:19
Speaker 11: solutions to challenges. But it's also, you know, I do
• 19:23
Speaker 11: think in a lot of ways the state has, we
• 19:25
Speaker 11: have moved in the right direction in a lot of ways.
• 19:27
Speaker 11: I mean, we finally have more in-state migration for the
• 19:30
Speaker 11: first time in decades in West Virginia and That's mostly
• 19:33
Speaker 11: in certain areas, though, like southern West Virginia, no doubt.
• 19:35
Speaker 11: We're still seeing problems with people leaving the state in
• 19:38
Speaker 11: southern West Virginia, but there are places where it's gotten better.
• 19:41
Speaker 11: We've definitely had some very large economic development announcements the
• 19:45
Speaker 11: past several years. That's all good, but I'm still personally
• 19:47
Speaker 11: just very impatient, and I want to say that. see
• 19:50
Speaker 11: the state do even better. And I don't think I'm
• 19:52
Speaker 11: the person who has every single answer, but I'm a
• 19:54
Speaker 11: hard worker. I'm very open-minded. And my main passion and
• 19:58
Speaker 11: goal as a delegate has been to work on economic
• 20:01
Speaker 11: development and job issues. I think that is the rising
• 20:04
Speaker 11: tide that lifts all boats. So there's nothing that's more
• 20:08
Speaker 11: satisfying to me than seeing mainly, frankly, an existing West
• 20:12
Speaker 11: Virginia business succeed and be able to expand and hire
• 20:14
Speaker 11: new people. But also if you bring in a new
• 20:16
Speaker 11: business from somewhere else, those are the things I like
• 20:18
Speaker 11: the most. But aside from that, Dave, also on the
• 20:21
Speaker 11: people side of it, I've got a real big public
• 20:23
Speaker 11: safety focus in the stuff that I do. My position
• 20:26
Speaker 11: in the House is I'm the House Judiciary Chairman. And
• 20:29
Speaker 11: a lot of what we do there obviously revolves around
• 20:30
Speaker 11: the legal system. So, you know, from my And people
• 20:34
Speaker 11: can look this up, like they wonder what we've done.
• 20:35
Speaker 11: A lot of times you see online, maybe, Dave, if
• 20:37
Speaker 11: you read the comments, people will complain, say politicians don't
• 20:40
  Speaker 11: ever do anything.
• 20:41
  Speaker 2: They don't care.
• 20:41
Speaker 11: I don't think everybody feels that way, but there's some frustration, obviously,
• 20:45
Speaker 11: and I get it. But if you look at my
• 20:47
Speaker 11: record specifically, you will see, I'm not patting myself on
• 20:51
Speaker 11: the back, but you have to talk about what you've
• 20:52
Speaker 11: done so people know you've actually accomplished something.
• 20:53
Speaker 2: That was going to be my next question. What are
• 20:55
Speaker 2: you most proud of?
• 20:56
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 20:57
Speaker 11: I mean, some of the economic development legislation, like we
• 21:00
Speaker 11: had a Small Business Growth Act that we passed last session.
• 21:02
Speaker 11: I was a lead sponsor of the House version of that.
• 21:04
Speaker 11: And that was specifically focused on existing West Virginia small businesses. Because, again,
• 21:09
Speaker 11: I'd like to have five more new course deals in
• 21:12
Speaker 11: West Virginia somewhere. That's going to be a phenomenal large
• 21:15
Speaker 11: employer in the state. But what I would also like
• 21:17
Speaker 11: to see as much or more of are the existing
• 21:19
Speaker 11: small businesses in the state grow. So we had a
• 21:21
Speaker 11: Small Business Growth Act that I was a lead sponsor
• 21:23
Speaker 11: on the House version.
• 21:24
  Speaker 2: That got passed.
• 21:25
Speaker 11: That'll be a very helpful piece of legislation for small business.
• 21:27
Speaker 11: But on an issue that people don't like to talk
• 21:31
Speaker 11: about as much, but it's necessary, a lot of the
• 21:33
Speaker 11: child protection stuff and child welfare. I've personally, again, it
• 21:38
Speaker 11: sounds like you're bragging, but I've got to tell folks
• 21:40
Speaker 11: what I did so they have a reason to vote
• 21:43
Speaker 11: for me. We had first of its kind child protection
• 21:46
Speaker 11: or child welfare legislation that went through this past session
• 21:49
Speaker 11: that I was the lead sponsor on. It's built an
• 21:51
Speaker 11: idea that I've been working on for years. that I
• 21:53
Speaker 11: think will have significant benefits in the abuse, neglect, foster
• 21:57
Speaker 11: care system. I'm very proud of that bill. That's not
• 22:00
Speaker 11: something a lot of folks really want to spend a
• 22:01
Speaker 11: ton of time on because it's not as glamorous, but
• 22:03
Speaker 11: it's extremely necessary, obviously. We also had some first of
• 22:08
Speaker 11: our kind legislation that I got some amendments to that
• 22:12
Speaker 11: I was also proud of. It was a drug kingpin law.
• 22:14
Speaker 11: And we're now West Virginia at the time that that
• 22:16
Speaker 11: passed was only the second state in the country that
• 22:19
Speaker 11: had that legislation codified. And that focuses on high level
• 22:23
Speaker 11: drug traffickers who are bringing drugs in the state. Like
• 22:26
Speaker 11: I'm someone, I don't think the solution is to throw
• 22:28
Speaker 11: everybody in jail who uses drugs. I mean, I think
• 22:30
Speaker 11: there's some folks who legitimately need help. But on the
• 22:33
Speaker 11: high level drug trafficking, drug dealing side, I've got no
• 22:36
Speaker 11: sympathy for them. So we have a drug kingpin law
• 22:39
Speaker 11: that I was personally responsible for putting a piece of
• 22:41
Speaker 11: legislation since I've been there, which I think is helpful
• 22:44
Speaker 11: on the public safety side. And then there's some other stuff, Dave,
• 22:47
Speaker 11: that may not be huge needle movers for some people,
• 22:50
Speaker 11: but I think are still important to people. I think
• 22:52
Speaker 11: this is something that you may appreciate because I know
• 22:54
Speaker 11: you're an animal lover. And one of the reasons I
• 22:56
Speaker 11: want to make it back next year is I had
• 22:58
Speaker 11: a first of its kind bill last year that made
• 23:01
Speaker 11: it through the House, didn't pass the Senate, unfortunately, it
• 23:03
Speaker 11: never took it up. But we, number one, increased the
• 23:06
Speaker 11: penalties for animal abusers in that piece of legislation. Then
• 23:10
Speaker 11: a companion bill would have created a first of its
• 23:12
Speaker 11: kind animal abuse registry that in West Virginia, similar to
• 23:16
Speaker 11: the sexual abuse registry we have now, but this one
• 23:18
Speaker 11: would have applied to animals. So that if you are
• 23:21
Speaker 11: someone who, you know, sells animals, or if you are
• 23:24
Speaker 11: giving away pets maybe to someone, you want to check
• 23:26
Speaker 11: online and say, well, is this somebody I should give
• 23:28
Speaker 11: a dog or cat to, or is this someone I
• 23:30
Speaker 11: should sell one of my animals to?
• 23:33
Speaker 2: You could see if.
• 23:33
Speaker 11: They've ever been registered online as a previously convicted animal abuser.
• 23:39
Speaker 11: So that was a first of its kind piece of
• 23:41
Speaker 11: legislation that I wish it passed last year. It made
• 23:43
Speaker 11: it through my side. So I'd like to come back
• 23:45
Speaker 11: and get that done. So anyway, my point is, and
• 23:48
Speaker 11: I could list lots of other stuff, but I think
• 23:50
Speaker 11: it's important for people to know that personally, I work on,
• 23:54
Speaker 11: I almost kind of hate to use this word, but
• 23:56
Speaker 11: I will, like I work on normal stuff that people
• 23:59
Speaker 11: want us to focus our attention on. I work on
• 24:02
Speaker 11: jobs issues. I work on educational issues, infrastructure. I work
• 24:07
Speaker 11: on a lot of child protection stuff. I work on
• 24:09
Speaker 11: stuff that involves protection of, you know, women, we had
• 24:12
Speaker 11: a sexual, um, extortion bill that went through last year.
• 24:15
Speaker 11: And I'll tell you this, I know we probably have
• 24:16
Speaker 11: a ton of time, but I'm always very responsive to
• 24:19
Speaker 11: people as well. If they call me directly or email me, uh,
• 24:23
Speaker 11: we had, I'm not going to name the family cause
• 24:24
Speaker 11: I don't want to endorse myself with someone's name, but, uh,
• 24:27
Speaker 11: we had a horrible situation in Nitro about a year
• 24:29
Speaker 11: ago where, uh, a young man was sexually extorted online.
• 24:33
Speaker 11: You know, this story, you know, the family, uh, super
• 24:35
Speaker 11: nice family. I feel awful for those people. Uh, but, um,
• 24:40
Speaker 11: Delegate Dana Farrell, Delegate Andy Shamblin as well and I
• 24:42
Speaker 11: got together and we amended our state's laws with regard
• 24:47
Speaker 11: to sexual extortion. So hopefully that won't happen again or
• 24:50
Speaker 11: if it does, the penalties are worse. But that was
• 24:52
Speaker 11: something we did in honor of that family. And we
• 24:53
Speaker 11: have some other laws we're going to try to change
• 24:55
Speaker 11: this coming session if I make it back along those
• 24:57
Speaker 11: same lines. There's another thing going on now. Please, please
• 25:00
Speaker 11: talk to your kids about this stuff. It's extremely important.
• 25:03
Speaker 11: There's something new going on or new-ish. It's called sadistic
• 25:06
Speaker 11: online exploitation. where you have people online who aren't trying
• 25:10
Speaker 11: to extort anything from someone by obtaining personal information from them.
• 25:14
Speaker 11: They're literally obtaining personal information, embarrassing photos or things like that,
• 25:18
Speaker 11: and then just trying to encourage people, the victim, to
• 25:22
Speaker 11: hurt or even kill themselves with no request for anything
• 25:25
Speaker 11: in return. It's not extortion. It's literally the term law
• 25:28
Speaker 11: enforcement uses is sadistic online exploitation. So I've got a
• 25:31
Speaker 11: bill lined up already to deal with that. What is
• 25:34
Speaker 11: the gain from that? Just sick satisfaction. It's truly just
• 25:40
Speaker 11: sick and evil. So there are those things that, you know,
• 25:45
Speaker 11: protecting people who can't protect themselves.
• 25:47
Speaker 2: Is a big focus of mine as well in my work.
• 25:49
Speaker 2: What's on your, if you are reelected, again, we're talking
• 25:52
Speaker 2: with Delegate J.B. Eggers, what's on your wish list for
• 25:54
Speaker 2: the upcoming session? Or what would you like to get
• 25:56
Speaker 2: accomplished over the next two years if you're reelected?
• 25:58
Speaker 11: I mean, number one is always improving the economy of
• 26:00
Speaker 11: the state. that is, you know, if people make a
• 26:04
Speaker 11: better living, then we, you know, affordability is the number
• 26:07
Speaker 11: one issue in the election this year from my point
• 26:09
Speaker 11: of view and rightfully so. If people make more money,
• 26:12
Speaker 11: things become more affordable. I want people to have as
• 26:15
Speaker 11: many good paying jobs here as possible so that our
• 26:17
Speaker 11: kids and grandkids don't have to leave. That's a recurring theme. Now, again,
• 26:20
Speaker 11: there are parts of the state where people are moving into,
• 26:22
Speaker 11: but down in that area, Dave, I think it still
• 26:24
Speaker 11: can be challenging. We For me, my wish list is
• 26:29
Speaker 11: going to be primarily anything that improves the needle on
• 26:32
Speaker 11: the economy of this state, allows people to make more money,
• 26:35
Speaker 11: to raise their families, keep their families here. And that's
• 26:38
  Speaker 11: my primary focus.
• 26:39
Speaker 2: And it has been the whole time I've been there.
• 26:40
Speaker 2: What are you hearing out on the campaign trail as
• 26:43
Speaker 2: you're out at candidate forums or door knocking or waving
• 26:46
Speaker 2: signs or at the church or the supermarket or wherever
• 26:50
  Speaker 2: you may be?
• 26:50
Speaker 11: What are you hearing from people? Yes, I mean, I'm
• 26:52
Speaker 11: very active on the community. I went out and did
• 26:54
Speaker 11: a lot of door knocking earlier this week. And I'll
• 26:56
Speaker 11: tell you, Dave, people are generally very positive towards me.
• 26:59
Speaker 11: And I do think most people are nice anyway. In politics,
• 27:02
Speaker 11: sometimes that cannot be the case. But people are generally
• 27:05
Speaker 11: very positive to me. And I will say, again, I
• 27:08
Speaker 11: think that I maintain a very positive campaign presence. You
• 27:12
Speaker 11: probably don't follow my campaign page. You're too busy doing
• 27:14
Speaker 11: other stuff. But all I do is talk about positive
• 27:17
Speaker 11: things about myself, positive things about my community, things I
• 27:20
Speaker 11: would like to get done. I don't say negative things
• 27:22
Speaker 11: about others. I think that does help. People tell us
• 27:25
Speaker 11: that's what they want us to do. And so that's
• 27:28
Speaker 11: what I do. I maintain a positive campaign presence. So
• 27:30
Speaker 11: people are nice to me, by and large. I will
• 27:33
Speaker 11: tell you that the voting numbers right now are interesting.
• 27:37
Speaker 11: There are some areas where you're seeing high turnout and
• 27:39
Speaker 11: there are other areas, I'll tell you, like if you
• 27:40
Speaker 11: live in Southern Kanawha County, you need to get out
• 27:43
Speaker 11: to vote. So your voice is heard. Some of the
• 27:45
Speaker 11: numbers down there are lower than we usually see. So
• 27:47
Speaker 11: if you're a Southern Kanawha County listener, I would highly
• 27:49
Speaker 11: encourage you to get out because it's important. I know
• 27:51
Speaker 11: some folks think, oh, my vote doesn't matter. But in
• 27:53
Speaker 11: the primary area, there were several races in the state
• 27:56
Speaker 11: that were decided by five votes or less. I mean,
• 27:58
Speaker 11: there were a couple of primary elections decided by like
• 28:00
Speaker 11: two votes, four votes. So if you're a voter and
• 28:03
Speaker 11: you're wondering whether your vote matters or makes a difference,
• 28:05
Speaker 11: I can promise you with 100% certainty.
• 28:07
Speaker 2: That it does. You have a website or social media? Yeah, jbacres.com.
• 28:12
  Speaker 2: Real easy.
• 28:12
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 28:12
Speaker 2: Final 30. Why should someone vote to reelect J.B.
• 28:16
  Speaker 3: Acres?
• 28:17
Speaker 11: I love representing people. I dedicate my time to this
• 28:22
Speaker 11: job for a reason. It's because I want to see
• 28:24
Speaker 11: people's lives improve. I love the place where we live.
• 28:27
Speaker 11: I focus on real issues. I focus on things that
• 28:30
Speaker 11: people tell me are important to them. And the primary
• 28:34
Speaker 11: thing that people tell me they want us to focus
• 28:36
Speaker 11: on is improving the economic welfare of the state. And
• 28:40
Speaker 11: that has been the thing that motivates me and drives
• 28:42
Speaker 11: me the most. And I'm super accessible. I respond to
• 28:45
Speaker 11: emails and phone calls and was doing that last night
• 28:48
Speaker 11: when I left my real job, quote unquote, downtown. And,
• 28:52
Speaker 11: you know, I get back to folks and I just
• 28:55
Speaker 11: enjoy I'm a people person and I just love what
• 28:57
Speaker 11: I do, man. So I'm privileged if if you vote
• 29:00
Speaker 11: for me, it's an honor to serve in this job.
• 29:03
Speaker 11: And I just can't tell you how much I enjoy it.
• 29:05
Speaker 11: And I want to continue to do it.
• 29:07
Speaker 2: Delegate J.B. Akers, he's the incumbent in House Seat 55.
• 29:10
Speaker 2: Appreciate you being here. We'll talk soon. Good luck to you.
• 29:12
  Speaker 3: Awesome.
• 29:12
Speaker 2: Thanks for your time.
• 29:13
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 29:13

Speaker 1: For over 20 years, Dr.
• 30:26
Speaker 6: Tom Takubo has cared for West Virginians at their hardest
• 30:29
Speaker 6: moments as a lung and critical care doctor right here
• 30:33
Speaker 6: at home. In the state Senate, he brings that same approach. Listen,
• 30:37
Speaker 6: diagnose the problem, fix it. Lower costs. Better care. Good

Speaker 6: jobs that keep our kids here.
• 30:45

  Speaker 2: Dr.

Speaker 6: Tom Takubo. Because West Virginia's people come first.
• 30:52
Speaker 1: Paid for by Takubo for Senate.
• 30:55
Speaker 13: The savings are on all summer long at Walker Chevrolet
• 30:58
Speaker 13: in Nitro. Listen, if you're planning on dragging that old
• 31:01
Speaker 13: worn out ride up and down the turnpike one more time,
• 31:05
Speaker 13: just don't. This is the time to upgrade and make
• 31:08
Speaker 13: that next trip in comfort and style. This summer, Gene
• 31:11
Speaker 13: and Ryan have loaded down the lot with inventory, both
• 31:14
Speaker 13: new and used, and that means they're sure to have
• 31:16
Speaker 13: the perfect vehicle for you no matter what your summer
• 31:19
Speaker 13: adventures have in store. And you know you're going to
• 31:21
Speaker 13: get the best deal possible at Walker because Gene and
• 31:23
Speaker 13: Ryan built their business the old-fashioned way by making friends.
• 31:27
Speaker 13: There are no gimmicks or games at Walker, just honest,
• 31:30
Speaker 13: fair deals. So don't push that old vehicle beyond its
• 31:33
Speaker 13: limits for another summer or worse. You have to call
• 31:35
Speaker 13: that brother-in-law you hate to come pick up your family
• 31:38
Speaker 13: in Beckley because that car couldn't make it back from
• 31:40
Speaker 13: Myrtle Beach. The new car, truck, or SUV you've been
• 31:43
Speaker 13: dreaming of is waiting on you now at Walker Chevrolet

Speaker 2: cannot impress upon you enough. to get your tickets in advance.
• 32:40
Speaker 2: I want to make sure that you vote either on
• 32:44
Speaker 2: Election Day or by early voting. I told you Election
• 32:47
Speaker 2: Day next Tuesday, polls will be open from 6.30 a.m., 7.30 p.m.
• 32:51
Speaker 2: on Election Day. Of course, we'll have the best election
• 32:53
Speaker 2: coverage around starting at 7.06 Tuesday night on air and online,
• 32:57
Speaker 2: Metro News Radio, Metro News Television, and all the social
• 33:00
Speaker 2: media aspects here on WCHS as well. Daniel Woods and
• 33:03
Speaker 2: I will be covering the local stuff here in WCHS.
• 33:06
Speaker 2: Chris Lawrence and the rest of the news teams will
• 33:07
Speaker 2: be based in Charleston. Jeff Jenkins, Dave Wilson, TJ Meadows,
• 33:10
Speaker 2: and more in Morgantown. So check us out. Again, we'll
• 33:14
Speaker 2: go live just after 7 on Tuesday night. Back to
• 33:18
Speaker 2: early voting. It continues, as I said, through Saturday. You
• 33:22
Speaker 2: can early vote at the Voter Registration Building in downtown Charleston,
• 33:26
Speaker 2: the Crosslanes Detachment. of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, the
• 33:29
Speaker 2: West Status Community Center in Nitro, the Town Hall in Bell,
• 33:32
Speaker 2: Elk View Community Center, the Girl Scouts of the Black
• 33:34
Speaker 2: Diamond on the West End, Marmette Town Hall, St. Albans
• 33:38
Speaker 2: City Hall, the Systemville Library, and the South Charleston Community Center.
• 33:42
Speaker 2: Early voting continues this Saturday. I have not early voted yet.
• 33:45
Speaker 2: My wife and I, it's kind of our thing. I
• 33:48
Speaker 2: haven't actually voted on an election day in a number
• 33:51
Speaker 2: of years. And it's mainly, not that I'm against it,
• 33:55
Speaker 2: as we would say in Southern West Virginia, it's just
• 33:56
Speaker 2: my schedule. just doesn't allow. So I have been doing
• 34:02
Speaker 2: the early voting thing the last couple of years. We'll
• 34:05
Speaker 2: probably go do that. I'm going to say probably this Saturday.
• 34:09
Speaker 2: Of course, we live in Putnam County, so we will
• 34:12
Speaker 2: either be going to the courthouse in Winfield or the
• 34:14
Speaker 2: Valley Park Conference Center. And so get out and vote.
• 34:19
Speaker 2: Make your voice heard. Texas, a huge thank you to
• 34:22
Speaker 2: JB Acres for helping me yesterday. I have sent so
• 34:24
Speaker 2: many emails and made numerous calls trying to get help
• 34:27
Speaker 2: and he's the only person to reach out to me
• 34:30
Speaker 2: and help. Appreciate that. Text Dave, our state has gotten worse.
• 34:35
Speaker 2: We want lower utilities costs, lower food costs, and change
• 34:39
Speaker 2: in how we put people on the Public Service Commission.
• 34:41
Speaker 2: They should not be appointed, and corruption has to be
• 34:43
Speaker 2: stopped and investigated. One of the interesting things that I
• 34:48
Speaker 2: find in election commercials, whether they're on radio, whether they're
• 34:53
Speaker 2: on television, online, or whatever, is the number of political
• 34:56
Speaker 2: people And again, I'm not hating on anybody, not taking sides,
• 35:02
Speaker 2: certainly not trying to offend anybody that would possibly advertise
• 35:05
Speaker 2: here by any stretch of the imagination. But so many
• 35:08
Speaker 2: people that say, I am going to work to lower prices.
• 35:13
Speaker 2: And every time I hear that, I just scratch my
• 35:15
Speaker 2: head and go, exactly how are you going to lower prices?
• 35:20
Speaker 2: I mean, exactly what's going to happen? Now, you could
• 35:23
Speaker 2: talk about policies, and there have been several of them.
• 35:27
Speaker 2: that have led to some of the prices that we're
• 35:29
Speaker 2: seeing right now, trucking, obviously diesel fuel, things of that nature.
• 35:32
Speaker 2: So I get that aspect of it. But when I
• 35:35
Speaker 2: hear somebody running ads that say, I'm going to lower
• 35:39
Speaker 2: prices or I'm going to work to lower prices, well,
• 35:41
Speaker 2: the guy that's in the White House also promised that
• 35:42
Speaker 2: too and see how that's working out. So I'm just saying,
• 35:45
Speaker 2: just saying, this is one of them SMH moments, I guess.
• 35:49
Speaker 2: Available now on Metro News Television, experience the greatest walk
• 35:52
Speaker 2: in golf, watch the full Pikewood National Invitational. where championship
• 35:56
Speaker 2: competition meets spectacular West Virginia scenery. Presented by Greer Industries
• 36:00
Speaker 2: and Morgan Stanley, now available on Metro News Television. Our
• 36:03
Speaker 2: whole crew here at the Radio Ranch is going to
• 36:06
Speaker 2: be at Go Mart Ballpark tonight for Trick or Beat,
• 36:08
Speaker 2: presented by Salango Law. It is completely sold out, folks.
• 36:13
Speaker 2: There are no more tickets available. That's why we tell
• 36:16
Speaker 2: you get your tickets early, because they ain't no more.
• 36:20
Speaker 2: They're gone. It is going to be a great time
• 36:23
Speaker 2: at the ballpark tonight, and for those who got your tickets,
• 36:25
Speaker 2: we'll be seeing you tonight starting at 6 o'clock. This
• 36:27
Speaker 2: is the 20th year that Light the Night, I'm getting
• 36:35
Speaker 2: my Halloween and Thanksgiving stuff. It's an Easter hunt. It's
• 36:39
Speaker 2: an Easter egg hunt. That's what it is. This is
• 36:41
Speaker 2: the 20th year that Trick or Beat has been done,
• 36:43
Speaker 2: and again, it's over at GoMart Ballpark. First session will
• 36:47
Speaker 2: start at 6 o'clock tonight, and it just gets bigger
• 36:49
Speaker 2: and better every year. But we start about a month
• 36:52
Speaker 2: in advance telling you, okay, the tickets will be available
• 36:55
Speaker 2: at this date. And then when we have the tickets,
• 36:57
Speaker 2: we say the tickets are available now. And without fail,
• 37:01
Speaker 2: love our listeners, but we got a giant sign hanging
• 37:05
Speaker 2: out on the door out here that says it's sold
• 37:08
Speaker 2: out because people wait. the last minute, and then they
• 37:12
Speaker 2: don't get tickets, and then we have to be bad
• 37:13
Speaker 2: guys and turn people away because we don't have enough
• 37:16
Speaker 2: stuff to go around. So that's why we tell you
• 37:17
Speaker 2: get your tickets in advance. But they're gone now. They're gone.
• 37:21
Speaker 2: If those do have your tickets, we'll see you over
• 37:22
Speaker 2: tonight at Goldmar Ballpark. They put each of us in
• 37:26
Speaker 2: different positions there. So if you come out, I will be,
• 37:30
Speaker 2: myself and Missy from our sales department, we will be
• 37:33
Speaker 2: manning the gates. We'll be the ones letting you in.
• 37:37
Speaker 2: So if I haven't met you, I'm looking forward to
• 37:38
Speaker 2: seeing you this evening at the ballpark. Coming up later today,
• 37:41
Speaker 2: Metro News Midday with Amanda Barrett and me. The voice
• 37:44
Speaker 2: of the Mountaineers, Tony Caridi, is going to stop by.
• 37:47
Speaker 2: Mountaineers have a bye this week, but Mr. Caridi's been
• 37:49
Speaker 2: on the road. He's been on the road with GoMart,
• 37:52
Speaker 2: helping them to distribute over 17,000 books. Now, he was
• 37:54
Speaker 2: at Bell Elementary School on Tuesday. He was also in Braxton, Raleigh,
• 37:59
Speaker 2: Cabell Wood, and Mon County. It's Tony's new book. that
• 38:02
  Speaker 2: he's written is called, it's a kid's book, Watch Where
• 38:05
Speaker 2: You Put Your Feet Down. So Tony Caridi is going
• 38:08
Speaker 2: to join us to talk about the tour, talk a
• 38:09
Speaker 2: little mouth-to-mouth football as well, again, as they have the
• 38:11
Speaker 2: bye week this week. Hoppy Kirchival is here. He's out
• 38:14
Speaker 2: with a new commentary. You can read that at wvmetronews.com
• 38:17
Speaker 2: if you didn't hear it on air this morning. Jeff
• 38:19
Speaker 2: Jenkins has the news. The folks from the United Way
• 38:21
Speaker 2: of Harrison, Doddridge, and Grant County areas are going to
• 38:24
Speaker 2: stop by the show today. Alan Sexton, Boone County School Superintendent,
• 38:28
Speaker 2: is going to be on the show today as well.
• 38:30
Speaker 2: And we told you on Tuesday's show, about a little
• 38:33
Speaker 2: controversy down in Greenbrier County, and it had to do
• 38:36
Speaker 2: with a meet the candidates forum. The folks, it's an
• 38:38
Speaker 2: online news publication. I don't know if you call it
• 38:41
Speaker 2: a publication if it's online. It's an online service, I guess.
• 38:46
Speaker 2: And it's called Real West Virginia. They had a meet
• 38:49
Speaker 2: the candidates forum scheduled in Greenbrier County. And the guy
• 38:54
Speaker 2: behind that, a guy named Stephen Baldwin from a legislator,
• 38:56
Speaker 2: but I know very well, Stephen Baldwin had said that
• 38:58
Speaker 2: all of these Republican candidates agreed to show up and
• 39:01
Speaker 2: then they backed out. Well, So I let him talk
• 39:03
Speaker 2: about that. Well, I heard from, as you may guess,
• 39:05
Speaker 2: the Greenbrier County Republican folks, and they said, well, we'd
• 39:09
Speaker 2: like to tell our side of the story. So Ben Anderson,
• 39:11
Speaker 2: who is the head of the Greenbrier Republicans, is going
• 39:13
Speaker 2: to join us on the show to tell their side
• 39:16
Speaker 2: of the story. Coming up, that and more on Metro
• 39:18
Speaker 2: News Midday with Amanda Barron and me coming up today,
• 39:21
Speaker 2: powered by Salango Law. Now, tomorrow on this show, it's Friday,
• 39:24
Speaker 2: meaning we'll get a visit from Angie Gillenwater from the
• 39:27
Speaker 2: Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association with our Adopt Me, Please Pet of
• 39:30
Speaker 2: the Week, presented by Almost Heaven Interiors. Republican candidate for
• 39:33
Speaker 2: Kanawha County Commission, Jared Page, is here. And the folks
• 39:35
Speaker 2: from the First T Foundation will stop by. That is
• 39:38
Speaker 2: all coming up on tomorrow's show the dave allen show
• 39:41
Speaker 2: and 580 live is brought to you in part by
• 39:44
Speaker 2: morgan and morgan with more than 20 billion dollars recovered
• 39:46
Speaker 2: they believe that when you're injured you deserve more morgan
• 39:49
Speaker 2: and morgan america's largest injury law firm uh texas can
• 39:56
Speaker 2: you ask tony if he has any more information into
• 40:00
Speaker 2: the health of coach huggins i can ask i can
• 40:02
  Speaker 2: ask uh I don't know that he does. I don't
• 40:05
Speaker 2: know that he doesn't. So I'll make myself a note
• 40:09
Speaker 2: right now to try to ask Mr. Carini about it.
• 40:11
Speaker 2: Because as I said, we're going to talk about his
• 40:13

• 41:24
Speaker 10: And then, bam, your whole life changes. Life can be

• 41:49
Speaker 15: the oldest of seven kids in a working-class family. We
• 41:51
Speaker 15: had hope in the American dream. But while I know
• 41:54
Speaker 15: what a paycheck has to cover, lately it doesn't cover
• 41:56
Speaker 15: enough for most West Virginians. So I'm fighting for good-paying jobs,
• 41:59
Speaker 15: lower taxes, a lower cost of living for your family.
• 42:02
Speaker 15: And I'll always defend our West Virginia values. That's how

Speaker 15: we restore hope in the American dream. That's my agenda.

• 43:05
Speaker 2: it is. Do they call them tournaments and bingo? I

Speaker 2: don't know. But anyway, Amos Steele, check them out on Facebook. Hey, parents,

• 43:43
Speaker 2: in our utilities and watch prices come down just like
• 43:45
Speaker 2: our phone companies years ago. Competition. Says a texter. I
• 43:51
Speaker 2: kind of missed this yesterday. I had to leave after
• 43:55
Speaker 2: the local show yesterday, as I've told you folks. It's
• 43:59
Speaker 2: been an interesting week for me from Tuesday night being
• 44:02
Speaker 2: inducted into the West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame to
• 44:05
Speaker 2: yesterday heading down to Logan County to bury my stepmother
• 44:09
Speaker 2: who passed away last Friday. So kind of the good
• 44:11
Speaker 2: and the bad. So I left yesterday as soon as
• 44:15
Speaker 2: the local show was over. Didn't do midday yesterday. I
• 44:17
Speaker 2: was kind of out of a loop taking care of
• 44:19
Speaker 2: family things down there. So I kind of missed this
• 44:23
Speaker 2: story as I was back in the homeland yesterday. It's
• 44:26
Speaker 2: the lead story this morning, wvmetronews.com. Downtown South Charleston was
• 44:31
Speaker 2: under a shelter in place for about an hour or
• 44:33
Speaker 2: so yesterday afternoon when a chlorine cloud formed at the
• 44:36
Speaker 2: Salinas plant. Now the wind, from what Jeff Jenkins reporting says,
• 44:40
Speaker 2: the wind pretty much took care of it. That's according
• 44:43
Speaker 2: to the emergency officials in South Charleston, Mr. White and
• 44:48
Speaker 2: the others there. Started around 2 o'clock, and the shelter-in-place
• 44:52
Speaker 2: was lifted before 3. Story posted about it at wvmetronews.com.
• 44:58
Speaker 2: As I mentioned earlier, I invite you to join me
• 44:59
Speaker 2: every Friday morning, 9-0-6, for the Adopt Me Please Pet
• 45:02
Speaker 2: of the Week from the Canala Charleston Humane Association, brought
• 45:04
Speaker 2: to you by Almost Heaven Interiors, family-owned, proudly serving the
• 45:07
Speaker 2: community for over 50 years, specializing in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery,
• 45:12
Speaker 2: and beautifully crafted sewn goods, homes to hospitals, classrooms to
• 45:15
Speaker 2: commercial spaces. They do it all, 516 D Street in
• 45:18
Speaker 2: South Charleston. Been doing these kind of meet the, we
• 45:21
Speaker 2: call them meet the candidate type interviews for the last
• 45:23
Speaker 2: couple of weeks here. But folks, the election is Tuesday.
• 45:27
Speaker 2: Early voting continues through Saturday. Election day is Tuesday. So
• 45:30
Speaker 2: if you have not reached out to me as a
• 45:32
Speaker 2: candidate and not gotten, I give every candidate one free interview.
• 45:37
Speaker 2: And then I turn you loose in the green room
• 45:39
Speaker 2: so the sales weasels can try to shake you down
• 45:41
Speaker 2: for money. uh that's the way the whole thing works
• 45:45
Speaker 2: uh you need to get with me i mean like
• 45:47
Speaker 2: soon because i have got one candidate on tomorrow county
• 45:51
Speaker 2: commission candidate that'll be on the show uh tomorrow i've
• 45:55
Speaker 2: got two uh scheduled for monday i'll space them out
• 46:00
Speaker 2: as far as you know i don't like to put
• 46:01
Speaker 2: two candidates back to back unless i have to certainly
• 46:04
Speaker 2: not two candidates running for the same office Um, so, uh,
• 46:07
Speaker 2: I got two on Monday and I don't have any
• 46:09
Speaker 2: schedule for election day. I know a lot of people
• 46:11
Speaker 2: don't like to do election day because they think it's
• 46:14
Speaker 2: too late at that point, but I'm just telling you,
• 46:16
Speaker 2: if you're a candidate and you've not been on with
• 46:18
Speaker 2: me and you want to, uh, I'll try my best
• 46:21
Speaker 2: to squeeze you in. Should be able to do it though.
• 46:23
Speaker 2: Drop me an email, dave.allen at wvradio.com. That's the best
• 46:27
Speaker 2: way to get ahold of me. dave.allen at wvradio.com. Do
• 46:31
Speaker 2: my best to get you scheduled. Election day is Tuesday.
• 46:35
Speaker 2: The text says the chlorine cloud was kind of reminiscent
• 46:38
Speaker 2: of the infamous 2007 blue haze in Charleston. So on
• 46:44
Speaker 2: to the Alyssa Middleton case. Now, and I didn't get
• 46:48
Speaker 2: a chance to get into this yesterday, Kanawha County Chief
• 46:51
Speaker 2: Judge Kerry Webster is saying that Prosecuting Attorney Deb Rusnack
• 46:55
Speaker 2: did not follow proper protocol in asking to be removed
• 46:59
Speaker 2: from the Alyssa Middleton case. Now, you'll recall on Monday,
• 47:02
Speaker 2: Prosecutor Rusnack filed a motion requesting that she be let
• 47:06
Speaker 2: off the case and that there be an appointment of
• 47:09
Speaker 2: a special prosecutor due to alleged threats from supporters of
• 47:12
Speaker 2: the family and friends of the late John Lucas. And
• 47:17
Speaker 2: Alyssa Middleton was the ambulance driver accused of intentionally hitting
• 47:21
Speaker 2: and killing Mr. Lucas earlier this year. The motion was
• 47:26
Speaker 2: submitted to Webster, which Judge Webster says was improper. Judge
• 47:29
Speaker 2: Webster says it needs to instead be filed with Judge
• 47:31
Speaker 2: Dave Hardy. Um, and, and basically from what I know
• 47:35
Speaker 2: about the story and I know about as much as filing, uh,
• 47:38
Speaker 2: motions as, uh, as this chair does over here. But
• 47:43
Speaker 2: from what I know about it is, is that it
• 47:45
Speaker 2: seems like it was sort of a, like a clerical
• 47:48
Speaker 2: error or something. So they're working to get that taken
• 47:50
Speaker 2: care of. And, uh, you can, um, read more about
• 47:54
Speaker 2: it at wvmetronews.com. The bottom line is though, and this is,
• 47:59
Speaker 2: I don't think this is the fault of anyone that
• 48:01
Speaker 2: is this case is not going to happen anytime soon.
• 48:06
Speaker 2: I mean, I truly believe that. And as much as
• 48:09
Speaker 2: the community wants it to happen yesterday, there is a process,
• 48:14
Speaker 2: and it's not going to get underway anytime soon. There
• 48:19
Speaker 2: was talk of a change of venue, which is warranted.
• 48:24
Speaker 2: I understand it. I mean, I completely understand that discussion.
• 48:27
Speaker 2: But that's being held up because there's a case before
• 48:29
Speaker 2: the Supreme Court's The Cochran case that kind of hangs
• 48:34
Speaker 2: in the balance with this case, what's going to happen
• 48:38
Speaker 2: in the Alyssa Middleton case. So and now this with
• 48:43
Speaker 2: prosecuting attorney Deb Rusnick saying that she'd been getting threats.
• 48:48
Speaker 2: Her office staff has been threatened. Now, by the way,
• 48:50
Speaker 2: I just would be in all fairness. The family of
• 48:53
Speaker 2: John Lucas is denying this. And I'm just saying what
• 48:56
Speaker 2: the allegations are, and I also wanted to put that
• 48:59
Speaker 2: they have denied it, that this is happening. But Deb
• 49:02
Speaker 2: Rusnick has said that she's had to have police presence
• 49:05
Speaker 2: outside her home. And let me just say that if you,
• 49:10
Speaker 2: regardless of everybody wants justice in this case, I get it.
• 49:13
Speaker 2: But if you are making comments like that or online,
• 49:18
Speaker 2: you're certainly not helping the K. And as I mentioned
• 49:20
Speaker 2: the other day, when Deb Rosnick on Monday, late Monday,
• 49:25
Speaker 2: filed that motion as early as like the next day
• 49:29
Speaker 2: on some of the news sites, there were people making
• 49:32
Speaker 2: those same statements saying we're going to get justice one
• 49:35
Speaker 2: way or the other. I understand the sentiment. Everybody wants justice.
• 49:39
Speaker 2: But that's what's causing the delays in the trial are
• 49:43
Speaker 2: statements like that. The best thing people can do is
• 49:44
Speaker 2: just sit back and just wait for the process to
• 49:47
Speaker 2: play out. The legal system never works at the pace
• 49:50
Speaker 2: that we want. And I completely 100% understand that. But
• 49:55
Speaker 2: just let it play out. Dex said, I would like
• 49:59
Speaker 2: for you to have an independent middle class voter on
• 50:01
Speaker 2: before election to find out what his or her concerns are.
• 50:04
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 50:04
Speaker 2: Well, I can interview myself then. Because I consider I
• 50:08
Speaker 2: am a registered independent. I used to be a Democrat,
• 50:11
Speaker 2: used to be a Republican. Now I'm an independent. Maybe
• 50:13
Speaker 2: I'll do that on election day. Maybe I'll interview myself.
• 50:19
Speaker 2: So the judge, as a texter, is not going to
• 50:21
Speaker 2: come down on those threatening a prosecutor, but on her
• 50:24
Speaker 2: for not going through proper protocol.
• 50:26
  Speaker 6: Really?
• 50:27
Speaker 2: Question mark. I got to mention this. This has caused
• 50:31
Speaker 2: a little, we'll end with a fun thing this morning.
• 50:33
Speaker 2: This has caused a lot of discussion within our office today.
• 50:39
Speaker 2: I posted a picture on my X page yesterday and
• 50:44
Speaker 2: on my personal Facebook page too. I mentioned I went
• 50:46
Speaker 2: down to Logan yesterday, went to one of my late
• 50:49
Speaker 2: stepmother's favorite places to eat, free mention there for Parkway Drive-In,
• 50:53
Speaker 2: ordered a big old batch of chicken livers. I mean,
• 50:57
Speaker 2: you know, just like a pound. Sorry, Millie Snyder had
• 51:00
Speaker 2: a pound of chicken livers yesterday. Absolutely delicious. On our call,
• 51:05
Speaker 2: we have a production call with the talk line boys
• 51:07
Speaker 2: and the video people around 8 o'clock or so. I
• 51:10
Speaker 2: learned that Dave Wilson, Northern Dave, absolutely loves chicken livers.
• 51:14
Speaker 2: Learned that TJ Meadows, native of Boone County, absolutely despises
• 51:21
Speaker 2: chicken livers. Learned that Chris Lawrence, who is as Southern
• 51:26
Speaker 2: as you can possibly get, Appalachian Southern, hates chicken livers.
• 51:30
Speaker 2: But yet Daniel Woods... who was from Mon County originally,
• 51:35
Speaker 2: was practically choking on his spit when he saw the
• 51:41
Speaker 2: picture of the chicken livers because he likes them so much.
• 51:44
Speaker 2: That'll be a debate away from politics sometime. I'll steal
• 51:47
Speaker 2: weeklies in or out. How's that? I'm in on chicken livers.
• 51:52
Speaker 2: All day I'm in on chicken livers with some coleslaw.
• 51:56
Speaker 2: I had onion rings with mine yesterday covered in hot sauce.
• 51:59
  Speaker 11: I'm in.
• 52:00
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 52:01
Speaker 2: Got to go. See you later today on Midday. Back
• 52:02
Speaker 2: on the show tomorrow. Until then, have fun. I love somebody.
