- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened everybody? Welcome into this edition of the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Czech Odaly. It's Andrew Dechecko, Eagles beat reporter for Inside
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Birds dot Com, reporting to you live from Lincoln
- 0:19Speaker 1: Financial Field. I'm in one of the little booths here
- 0:22Speaker 1: recording this podcast, and the Eagles beat the Detroit Lions
- 0:26Speaker 1: in a defensive slugfest by a score of sixteen to nine.
- 0:30Speaker 1: There's a lot of takeaways from this game, and there's
- 0:33Speaker 1: a lot that has yet to be determined. You know,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni speaking right now, jaywhen hurtzys yet to speak.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But I spoke to a number of different players in
- 0:41Speaker 1: the locker room, including linebacker n Kobe Dean, who had
- 0:44Speaker 1: a heck.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Of a football game tonight. And let's start with the weather.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And it was extremely windy here in South Philadelphia. There
- 0:54Speaker 1: were leaves rustling. You can clearly see that that was
- 0:57Speaker 1: impacting both kickers. In pregame, you could see the flags waving,
- 1:01Speaker 1: the goalpost sort of wavering a little bit, and that certainly,
- 1:06Speaker 1: I believe at least played a part in the game tonight.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But let's look at some of the stats immediately. Quarterback
- 1:13Speaker 1: Jay when Hurst completed fourteen of twenty eight passes for
- 1:16Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty five yards, while adding another thirty
- 1:18Speaker 1: two and a touchdown on the ground. Running Back Saquon
- 1:21Speaker 1: Barkley carried twenty six times for eighty three yards. The
- 1:24Speaker 1: leading receiver was aj Brown, who secured seven of eleven
- 1:28Speaker 1: pass targets for forty nine yards. Defensively, linebacker Zach Bond
- 1:32Speaker 1: led the way with seven tackles and to Kobe Dean
- 1:34Speaker 1: and Jalen Phillips each.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Picked up a sack.
- 1:36Speaker 1: For Phillips it was his first sack since joining the Eagles,
- 1:40Speaker 1: while Dean registered his second sack in as many games.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Inactive for the Eagles were quarterback Sam Howell, who was
- 1:47Speaker 1: the emergency third quarterback, quarnterback Mac McWilliams, running back AJ Dillen,
- 1:52Speaker 1: offensive lineman Drew Kendall, and defensive tackle Ty Robinson.
- 1:57Speaker 2: The Eagles elected for.
- 1:58Speaker 1: No practice squad elevations this week, as all fifty three
- 2:00Speaker 1: players entered Sunday night healthy. Let's get to some of
- 2:04Speaker 1: my observations. First and foremost, I thought it was really
- 2:09Speaker 1: cool that leading the Eagles out of the tunnel was
- 2:13Speaker 1: Brett Toth, who was a West Point graduate and he
- 2:16Speaker 1: was carrying the American flag. It was a really cool moment.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And then you got to see, you know, a really
- 2:24Speaker 1: nice rendition of the US Army Quartet Chorus band doing
- 2:29Speaker 1: the national anthem, and it really set the tone for
- 2:32Speaker 1: the game, I felt, And so that was just something
- 2:36Speaker 1: I wanted to I jotted down to my observations that
- 2:38Speaker 1: I thought was really cool to see. But the Lions
- 2:42Speaker 1: won the opening coin toss, they elected to defer, which
- 2:45Speaker 1: brought on the Eagles offense. That was, you know, really
- 2:48Speaker 1: much really under the microscope to start. Fred Johnson started
- 2:51Speaker 1: the game as an extra offensive lineman and herts. His
- 2:55Speaker 1: first throw of the game goes to DeVante Smith, who
- 2:57Speaker 1: was unable to hold on following a hit from cornerback
- 3:00Speaker 1: Robertson Dallas Goddard. He had room to run, he was open.
- 3:04Speaker 1: This is the second play he dropped the ensuing pass.
- 3:06Speaker 1: DeVante Smith and Dallas Goddard each dropped at least two passes,
- 3:11Speaker 1: so it was really uncharacteristic because both are relatively shurethanded,
- 3:14Speaker 1: especially Davante. But the Eagles wasted little time involving aj Brown.
- 3:19Speaker 1: He reeled in a twelve yard catch on the third play.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Of the game, and it.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Looked like things were starting to get rolling a little bit,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and then Elaine Johnson penalty halted all momentum and the
- 3:28Speaker 1: Eagles were eventually forced to punt, and that drive covered
- 3:32Speaker 1: just eighteen yards and six plays, and that sort of
- 3:35Speaker 1: set the scene for the offensive performance really on both sides.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But from a Philadelphia perspective.
- 3:42Speaker 1: The offense left a lot to be desired, and you're
- 3:44Speaker 1: quickly going to find out that the defense had to
- 3:47Speaker 1: do a lot of the heavy lifting for the second
- 3:49Speaker 1: consecutive week. And honestly, while it hasn't been as dire
- 3:54Speaker 1: some weeks, the defense has really held up its end
- 3:57Speaker 1: of the bargain more so than the offense for most
- 3:59Speaker 1: of this season, if we're keeping things one hundred here.
- 4:03Speaker 1: But the defense picked up where it left off a
- 4:06Speaker 1: week ago. On the first and ten from the Lions
- 4:08Speaker 1: twenty six, Jordan Davis got a hand up to deflect
- 4:10Speaker 1: a pass that actually fell into the waiting arms of
- 4:13Speaker 1: Cooper Dejean, who picks the pass off or turns at
- 4:16Speaker 1: twenty one yards and then the offense was unable to
- 4:19Speaker 1: punch it in and they were forced to settle for
- 4:21Speaker 1: a twenty seven yard Jake Elliott field goal. But you
- 4:24Speaker 1: can clearly see that the defense early in this game
- 4:27Speaker 1: was making Jared Goff uncomfortable from the beginning, and they
- 4:30Speaker 1: got a lot of batted passes in this game. Jordan
- 4:32Speaker 1: Davis had two, Jalen Carter got a couple, and it
- 4:36Speaker 1: just seemed to be a prevailing theme throughout the game.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Presumably the Eagles saw something on the scouting report and
- 4:40Speaker 1: were able to take advantage of it, but Jared Goff
- 4:43Speaker 1: looked extremely rattled in this game. But a week after
- 4:47Speaker 1: generating six tackles in a forced fumble and a half
- 4:49Speaker 1: dozen pressures, Jalen Phillips recorded his first sack since joining
- 4:53Speaker 1: the Eagles, which I just mentioned. He dropped Jared Goff
- 4:55Speaker 1: for a five yard loss, and on that play, while
- 5:00Speaker 1: Willip's ability to.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Turn the corner was impressive, it was the standout.
- 5:03Speaker 1: The standout on that play was defensive tackle Jayalen Carter,
- 5:06Speaker 1: who absolutely flattened right guard Tate Ratledge, and he provided
- 5:10Speaker 1: consistent pressure throughout the evening.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm speaking about Jalen Phillips here.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Some curious decisions from Dan Campbell and Nakobe Dean after
- 5:19Speaker 1: the game mentioned that the fact that they went on
- 5:22Speaker 1: fourth down quite a bit. He almost as a defensive
- 5:25Speaker 1: player take that as disrespect, but he said that he
- 5:27Speaker 1: knew and was well aware of what they did and
- 5:29Speaker 1: what they were about as a team. But Dan Campbell
- 5:33Speaker 1: usually skews on the aggressive side, and there was a
- 5:36Speaker 1: time where it was a fourth and six.
- 5:38Speaker 2: This is early in the game.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It became a fourth and eleven, gave himselves more room
- 5:41Speaker 1: to punt, but it was in plus territory, and maybe
- 5:45Speaker 1: the conditions and the personality of the game contributed to
- 5:47Speaker 1: this traditional line of thinking. But I couldn't help but
- 5:50Speaker 1: wonder if the Eagles slow start offensively played a role.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It's worth noting that Campbell elected to go for it
- 5:56Speaker 1: on fourth and one on the ensuing drive, with defensive
- 5:59Speaker 1: tackle Jomo knifing through to stuff running back Jamiir Gibbs
- 6:03Speaker 1: for no gain. As I've written about, Ajuma has a
- 6:06Speaker 1: flare for making plays and critical moments, and Campbell's reckless
- 6:09Speaker 1: tendency surface once again on the following drive, electing to
- 6:12Speaker 1: direct snap the ball after showing punt on a fourth
- 6:16Speaker 1: and two, the Eagles turned into another three points.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Right tackle Lane Johnson.
- 6:21Speaker 1: He exited with a foot injury and was ruled out,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and that press Fred Johnson into service as his replacement.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Much like last week when Johnson was sidelined for most
- 6:30Speaker 1: of the game, the Eagles didn't scrap the jumbo package again.
- 6:34Speaker 1: It was veteran Matt Pryor who was elevated into that role.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I think that's going to be here to stay, regardless
- 6:39Speaker 1: of who the Eagles have from a personnel standpoint, because
- 6:42Speaker 1: they seemed inclined on getting that extra offensive lineman in
- 6:45Speaker 1: there and playing that physical, bullyball style and trying to
- 6:49Speaker 1: get things rolling offensively. In terms of the rushing attack,
- 6:52Speaker 1: it felt like it was all a matter of time
- 6:54Speaker 1: before a pass happy offense tested the Eagles number two cornerback,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and it didn't happen early in the contest, but at
- 7:01Speaker 1: some point the second quarter, I believe Jared Goff targeted
- 7:05Speaker 1: to Dory Jackson. He was in coverage on the forty
- 7:08Speaker 1: yard touchdown from Lions wide receiver Jamison Williams. Williams was
- 7:12Speaker 1: targeted was tagged for an unsportsman like penalty and that
- 7:16Speaker 1: pushed the extra point back.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Lions kicker Jake Base didn't come close.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Dorry Jackson had a really big pass breakup last late
- 7:23Speaker 1: in the game when the Lions went for on a
- 7:26Speaker 1: fourth and three, he you know he was He made
- 7:29Speaker 1: a savvy veteran play where he used the back of
- 7:31Speaker 1: the end zone as an extra defender in aiding him
- 7:34Speaker 1: in coverage and he really sort of squeezed a Monros
- 7:38Speaker 1: Saint Brown and narrowed that throwing window.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And I mentioned that to him after the game.
- 7:42Speaker 1: He goes, ah, you know, a little ball, huh, because
- 7:44Speaker 1: that was a savvy veteran play. Vic Vangiel earlier this
- 7:47Speaker 1: week referred to a Dori Jackson as a survivor and
- 7:52Speaker 1: I asked him about that as well. What that meant
- 7:54Speaker 1: to hear that from his defensive coordinator, and he he
- 7:58Speaker 1: gave a really good answer.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I off the train describe it.
- 8:00Speaker 1: But it was one of those things where he deserves
- 8:02Speaker 1: a lot of credit because he's caught a lot of flak.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think a lot of it was really unfair.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Aside from that first game where he struggled, I think
- 8:10Speaker 1: he's been serviceable.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And I think it's very telling.
- 8:15Speaker 1: That a lot of his teammates were really excited in
- 8:18Speaker 1: the postgame locker room about his performance about him contributing
- 8:22Speaker 1: in a big way to this win, and if he
- 8:25Speaker 1: can continue to play at that level, the Eagles have
- 8:28Speaker 1: a really complete defense. And I think those of you
- 8:32Speaker 1: who were reluctant to look at a Dori Jackson and
- 8:36Speaker 1: give him credit or have confidence that the Eagles and
- 8:39Speaker 1: Vic Fangio saw something and trust in that. I think
- 8:42Speaker 1: it's time to now give him some props because I
- 8:46Speaker 1: think that the more that he's playing, the more reps
- 8:48Speaker 1: he's getting within this system. He's playing faster, he's trusting
- 8:51Speaker 1: his technique, and he's building that continuity with his fellow
- 8:55Speaker 1: secondary members.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So good stuff there from a Dory. Hey it's Jeff.

- 11:42Speaker 1: The Eagles put together an impressive ten place sixty four
- 11:44Speaker 1: yard scoring drive to essentially close out the half. The
- 11:47Speaker 1: drive featured a perfect blend of run and pass and
- 11:50Speaker 1: some sparsely utilized offensive components such as tight end Kylin
- 11:54Speaker 1: Grantson and running back Tank Bigsby. Bigsby in fact kickstar
- 11:58Speaker 1: of the drive with a seventeen yard run on second
- 12:00Speaker 1: and thirdeen. The energy Tank Bigsby brings as a change
- 12:04Speaker 1: up is noticeable. Grantson would also be targeted on a
- 12:07Speaker 1: third and five, but that play would fall in complete. Look,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I know that Kevin Patulo is gonna get questioned for
- 12:15Speaker 1: that from the outside, not from us who cover the team,
- 12:18Speaker 1: but from the outside. But you have to imagine he
- 12:21Speaker 1: wasn't the primary on that play, and he does bring
- 12:25Speaker 1: some athleticism on the outside he can separate.
- 12:27Speaker 2: It was a you know, I didn't.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Think the pass was bad, especially in those conditions, but
- 12:33Speaker 1: that's the way it goes. And you know, every once
- 12:36Speaker 1: in a while you work in different different players and
- 12:39Speaker 1: personnel groupings to catch defenses off guard. The Eagles defense
- 12:45Speaker 1: held the lines to zero for four on third down
- 12:47Speaker 1: opportunities in the first half, adding to the defensive dominance.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Pik Fangio's group held the dynamic rushing tandem of Jamiir
- 12:53Speaker 1: Gibbs and David Montgomery to twenty two yards on nine carries.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Again, this was in the first half. Pivoting to special
- 13:01Speaker 2: teams for a moment.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I've said this more than a few times this season,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but full back tight end cam Latsu is an absolute
- 13:07Speaker 1: force on special teams. I can't say enough good things
- 13:10Speaker 1: about what he's brought, and I will always key in
- 13:12Speaker 1: on kickoff where he is because players like cam Latsu
- 13:16Speaker 1: and Sydney Brown blow things up. They play a very
- 13:19Speaker 1: physical brand of football. They get downhill, they're like heat
- 13:22Speaker 1: seeking missiles and they crave contact. But a lot two
- 13:27Speaker 1: collected a solo stop in kick coverage and was in
- 13:29Speaker 1: on multiple others, and he brings discernible physicality and urgency
- 13:33Speaker 1: to teams. He also landed a quality block on the
- 13:35Speaker 1: second quarter of Saquon Barkley run at the goal line
- 13:38Speaker 1: that was initially ruled a touchdown, but then then they
- 13:41Speaker 1: initially ruled it was short and that set up the
- 13:44Speaker 1: one yard jay when hurts plunge. Speaking of special teams,
- 13:48Speaker 1: great hustle and getting downfield and seeking work from long
- 13:51Speaker 1: snapper cal Ademitas on multiple occasions, collecting a pair of stops.
- 13:57Speaker 2: That third and one false.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Start penalty from Raichguar Tyler Stein was really interesting because
- 14:01Speaker 1: then the replay clearly shows encroachment from defensive tackle Tyler Williams.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Stein looked like he brushed his hands back.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And then Williams lunged across the line. And Tyler Steen
- 14:12Speaker 1: is a quiet guy. He doesn't necessarily have a personality
- 14:18Speaker 1: where he's gonna be, you know, raucous or you know,
- 14:21Speaker 1: cause a stir if you will. But he was noticed,
- 14:24Speaker 1: wabll be animated once he realized he was the player flag.
- 14:27Speaker 1: So that tells you that there was a disconnect there
- 14:29Speaker 1: and he took some exception to the call because if
- 14:33Speaker 1: you watch the replay, Tyler Williams clearly, you know, touch
- 14:37Speaker 1: touched his hand as he was, you know, grazing across
- 14:39Speaker 1: the line.
- 14:40Speaker 2: You can't do that.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I mentioned this already, But great situational awareness by Jackson
- 14:46Speaker 1: Dori Jackson on the fourth and three third down, third
- 14:49Speaker 1: quarter stand using the back end of the end zone
- 14:51Speaker 1: to aid and squeezing a mom ros Saint Brown and
- 14:54Speaker 1: narrowing that throwing window. And how about Jake Elliott, a
- 14:56Speaker 1: strong outing from him who connected on field goals with
- 14:59Speaker 1: twenty seven, thirty four and forty nine yards.
- 15:02Speaker 2: In difficult conditions.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Now we have to look at this offense because there
- 15:08Speaker 1: were many times in this game where there were just
- 15:11Speaker 1: wasted opportunities. Jaywhen Hurts and his past targets weren't able
- 15:15Speaker 1: to connect. There were drops, there were a lot of
- 15:20Speaker 1: untimely penalties. In fact, Cam Jurgens later in the game
- 15:23Speaker 1: left and was replaced by Brett Toath. Cam Jurgens was
- 15:26Speaker 1: in the I believe he was in the medical tent,
- 15:28Speaker 1: So we'll have to wait and see what injury it
- 15:31Speaker 1: was was, what's the extent and all of that. But
- 15:33Speaker 1: I thought the offensive line struggled in this game. There
- 15:35Speaker 1: was a lot of times where Jay when Hurts was
- 15:37Speaker 1: under duress. So you couple that with a passing game
- 15:39Speaker 1: that again wasn't clicking. There were drops when the plays
- 15:43Speaker 1: were there to be made, and I mean, they have
- 15:46Speaker 1: to get it together. The defense continues to stockpile admirable
- 15:53Speaker 1: heroic performances and it's unrealistic and it's just not feasible
- 15:58Speaker 1: for them to continuously do that. Think about what they did.
- 16:01Speaker 1: They went out there and they held the high powered
- 16:03Speaker 1: Detroit Lions offense to nine points in this game. Guys
- 16:07Speaker 1: like Zach Bond, Nakobe Dean, Jalen Phillips, Jalen Carter, Moro, Jomo,
- 16:13Speaker 1: Jordan Davis. Drew mccuba was a player that Nakcobe Dean
- 16:17Speaker 1: singled out. He said, if you heard the licks that
- 16:20Speaker 1: Drew mccouba was putting on the running backs when he
- 16:22Speaker 1: was getting downhill, He said, man, that dude was playing physical, reed, blanketship,
- 16:28Speaker 1: Quinyon Mitchell, Dori Jackson, across the board. I've named just
- 16:31Speaker 1: about every player who was out there, and they were
- 16:35Speaker 1: all making plays. They were all flowing to the football
- 16:38Speaker 1: and sort of taking joy in whoever was making the play.
- 16:42Speaker 2: They didn't care who made the play.
- 16:44Speaker 1: They just wanted to go out there and do what
- 16:47Speaker 1: they needed to do to get off the field and
- 16:49Speaker 1: give the offense back the football.
- 16:51Speaker 2: But I mean, if it wasn't for.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That defensive performance, this game could have gotten out of hand.
- 16:57Speaker 1: It wasn't pretty, but it doesn't matter because the Eagles
- 17:00Speaker 1: won the football game. They're going to continue to build
- 17:02Speaker 1: off of this, and especially as a defense.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Offensively, they have to go back to the drawing board.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Hey, Philly, fans.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Game day is stressful enough.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Parking traffic, long lines, We've all been there, But when

- 17:29Speaker 3: about convenience. Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience.

- 17:52Speaker 3: They even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 17:57Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Handed in Apothecary, top quality cannabis,
- 18:02Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 18:06Speaker 3: one and up.
- 18:08Speaker 1: This offense is too talented for them to continuously appear
- 18:11Speaker 1: as though.
- 18:12Speaker 2: They're laboring down the field, and there's the self inflicted
- 18:16Speaker 2: wounds that keep surfacing. They're gonna have to clean that up.
- 18:19Speaker 1: But what I will say is, if you're looking across
- 18:21Speaker 1: the NFL and you're watching football on Sunday, it's hard
- 18:24Speaker 1: to pinpoint another team that could give the Eagles a
- 18:27Speaker 1: serious run for their money later in the season.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Sure you could look at the Seahawks.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I happen to like Sam Darnold, but he threw four
- 18:34Speaker 1: interceptions Sunday afternoon, and you have to wonder how he
- 18:37Speaker 1: would fare under the duress that the Eagles put on
- 18:40Speaker 1: the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers. I have
- 18:43Speaker 1: to think that he might falter under the pressure. The Rams, well,
- 18:47Speaker 1: the Eagles play them already this season. They gave him
- 18:49Speaker 1: a good game. Matthew Stafford's playing as good as any
- 18:51Speaker 1: quarterback in the league, and you can make an argument
- 18:53Speaker 1: that he should be the MVP at least at this point.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That's a team you can make a case for. But
- 18:59Speaker 1: outside that, maybe the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Baker Mayfield.
- 19:03Speaker 1: They could be getting Mike Evans back. They have a
- 19:05Speaker 1: defense under Todd Bowles that knows how to get after it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: They're savvy, they're tough, they're physical, So that might be
- 19:11Speaker 1: one of those teams. But really the Eagles, in my estimation,
- 19:15Speaker 1: are head and shoulders above. Maybe not head and shoulders,
- 19:18Speaker 1: but they are the class of the NFC. They have
- 19:22Speaker 1: to tighten things up offensively, of course, I don't know
- 19:24Speaker 1: how many different times I can say that each and
- 19:26Speaker 1: every week, but if they're able to at least round
- 19:30Speaker 1: somewhat into form, coupled with that defense, that's going to
- 19:33Speaker 1: be a formida formidable combination. But for now, that's going
- 19:37Speaker 1: to do it. For this edition of the Czech O Daily,
- 19:39Speaker 1: I am Andrew Decheco, and I will catch you with
- 19:43Speaker 1: a Monday edition after hearing from Nick Siriani in his
- 19:48Speaker 1: day after press conference
