- 0:00Now, this morning, we have already had a time
- 0:03of prayer concerning when we are up against the
- 0:08wall, right? And a good number of you raised
- 0:12your hands. And when we're up against the wall,
- 0:16we do continually believe and are praying for
- 0:20the wall to come down. There is something in
- 0:27the wall experience that I believe we need. This
- 0:33morning, the text, we're going to read it in
- 0:35its fullness, is in Philippians 4, and we're
- 0:38going to start in verse 11. This is Paul, the
- 0:43Apostle Paul, right? Great man of God. Not that
- 0:48I speak in regard to need. offering that had
- 0:55been given from the church in Philippi, and they
- 1:00had not been able to give to him or had the opportunity
- 1:04to give the way they had wanted to. And so he's
- 1:09addressing them in this, and he said, not that
- 1:12I speak in regard to need, for I have learned
- 1:16in whatever state I am to be content. I know
- 1:25how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere
- 1:33and in all things, I have learned both to be
- 1:38full and to be hungry. Truthfully, I think we
- 1:43mostly know how to be full, right? As soon as
- 1:49we enter into a fast, we quickly discover that
- 1:52we don't know how to be hungry very well. Because
- 1:57suddenly the Holy Spirit is saying, okay, your
- 1:59fast is over. When really your flesh is saying,
- 2:04feed me. I don't like to be hungry. I don't like
- 2:09to be abased. I don't like to be without. But
- 2:14Paul said, I've learned both to be full and to
- 2:17be hungry, both to abound. Oh, we do well in
- 2:23the abounding. But have we learned to do well
- 2:29when we suffer need? And then it's in this verse
- 2:37right here that he says, I can do all things
- 2:41through Christ. who strengthens me. And this
- 2:47morning, what I want is to come along Paul. And
- 2:51I love the wordage that he uses here. He says,
- 2:55what? I just know how to be in lack. I know how
- 3:00to do it really well. No, he didn't say that,
- 3:03did he? What did he say? I have learned. I have
- 3:09learned to be full. and I have learned to be
- 3:13in need. And the truth is that we do like it
- 3:18better when we're full and when we're abounding
- 3:21and the blessings are flowing. But even in that,
- 3:27we have to learn. We have to learn to abound
- 3:32so as not to be proud, to not be secure in our
- 3:36own self -sufficiency. or for using that abundance
- 3:42for selfish purposes, right? We have to learn
- 3:46how to abound well. Today, what I want us to
- 3:51really see, though, is that in the times of abasement,
- 3:54the times when we are brought low, when we are
- 3:58restricted, the times of suffering and need,
- 4:02there is a temptation that can come in that place.
- 4:09In that place of suffering need is our temptation
- 4:12to lose comfort in God. It's temptation to distrust
- 4:20his provision. Well, I've been tithing for years.
- 4:26And when it doesn't feel like we're abounding,
- 4:29right? Many of us have been there. We begin to
- 4:34distrust, is God really providing? It is in those
- 4:40moments that we are tempted to make the blessing
- 4:43happen on our own. Abraham and Sarah knew something
- 4:49about that, didn't they? Thus was born Ishmael.
- 4:54These are temptations that we have to learn to
- 4:57navigate when we are up against the wall. And
- 5:03so this morning, We're going to be taking a little
- 5:07journey through the life of David. About a month
- 5:13ago, I had a brief dream, and I have discovered
- 5:19in my life that there have only been a few times
- 5:23when I have had dreams that I know are from God.
- 5:28One was in our previous church. And I had had
- 5:33a very vivid dream about gossip. I get chills
- 5:38even now. And in the church, it was very demonic,
- 5:43like just vomiting. And that was a very vivid
- 5:49dream that I had. I had a dream concerning my
- 5:51son. I had a dream one morning. It wasn't really
- 5:56a dream. It was more the Holy Spirit. in those
- 5:59waking before you're awake, a command to pray
- 6:04for the spreading of the Holy Spirit through
- 6:08the region. And about a month ago, I had a dream.
- 6:13It wasn't a dream, really. It was more like the
- 6:15voice of God speaking in my sleep. And I think
- 6:19sometimes he does that because every time I've
- 6:21had those moments, I've had need to stand in
- 6:25faith, believing. And it's like he knows that
- 6:30in that state of being, it's like my spirit just
- 6:33is open. And it was very simple and very quick.
- 6:39And all I heard was, I have restrained you so
- 6:44I can expand you. That was it. And I just kept
- 6:49on sleeping. But I woke up having heard that.
- 6:53And ever since I heard that, it's been just resonating
- 6:57within my spirit. I have restrained you so I
- 7:03can expand you. And the question that came out
- 7:09of that was this. Do I trust the restraint of
- 7:17the Lord? over abundance in my life? Is knowing
- 7:29that God is in the restraint of my life, do I
- 7:37trust being in that place with him? Or is it
- 7:43only when I feel his abundance that I trust him?
- 7:48And from that question, I've been saying, God,
- 7:52teach me like Paul. Teach me how to be in the
- 7:58restraint. Teach me how to be in the place of
- 8:01suffering need. Teach me how to be in the place
- 8:05of being brought low. Of feeling like every time
- 8:10I turn around, I hit that wall. And I think that
- 8:13Paul understood that. I think that Paul often,
- 8:18every time he turned around, it was like he was
- 8:20getting slapped in the face. He endured such
- 8:23hardship that every time he turned around, that's
- 8:27what he was being faced with. And he says, I've
- 8:32learned how to be in this place. And so this
- 8:38morning, I want us to walk through quickly. Five
- 8:43seasons that were critical in the life of King
- 8:46David. Often when we think about restraint and
- 8:51how to live well in the places of restraint,
- 8:53we do think about the life of Joseph. But I have
- 8:57this strong pull toward King David. Because I
- 9:03feel like he's just so real, right? He just,
- 9:06he made so many mistakes. He endured so much
- 9:11up and down that I feel like he could just relate
- 9:14with stuff in our life. And so we're going to
- 9:20quickly, it's 1117 already, so we're going to
- 9:22quickly move through. I would encourage you,
- 9:25though, this is, we're going to be in 1 and 2
- 9:28Samuel today. I would encourage you at your leisure,
- 9:32in your private study, to just slowly walk through
- 9:35the life of David. and see his interaction with
- 9:40God. The first season that we're going to look
- 9:44at is his season of Bethlehem. This is his childhood.
- 9:49Now, how many of you know your childhood often
- 9:52can make and break your life if it's not dealt
- 9:57with as an adult? And David didn't have it always
- 10:02the easiest growing up. when it came time for
- 10:09the kingdom to be removed from King Saul, and
- 10:15Samuel was sent to anoint another king, and so
- 10:20he goes to the house of Judah, he goes to the
- 10:24house of Jesse, and he invites them to sacrifice
- 10:30to the Lord with him and his sons. Do you think
- 10:36that Any of them, not the father, none of the
- 10:40brothers, thought to call David in from being
- 10:45out in the field watching the sheep. No, not
- 10:51one of them said, hey, do you think we should
- 10:54invite David? It did not occur to any of them
- 11:02to invite David to sacrifice with the great prophet
- 11:09Samuel. And so all of the sons passed before
- 11:16Samuel. And God says, no, no, no, no. Get to
- 11:23the end of the line of the sons. Nope. And Samuel's
- 11:27like, what's up? There's got to be another son.
- 11:31Don't you have another son? Oh, well, yeah, he's
- 11:33just David out on the field. Call him in. I want
- 11:39David to walk in front of me. And so Samuel said
- 11:45to Jesse, send him, bring him, for we will not
- 11:50sit down till he comes here. This is in 1 Samuel
- 11:5516. I'm summarizing for you. So he sent and brought
- 12:01him in. He was ready with bright eyes and good
- 12:05looking, and the Lord said, Arise, anoint him,
- 12:09for this is the one. Then Samuel took the horn
- 12:15of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.
- 12:21Oh yes, this is going to cause such brotherly
- 12:26love. I'm sure the brothers were just Yeah, one
- 12:30of us gets to be king. The Spirit of the Lord
- 12:37came upon David from that day forward. This season
- 12:44of David's life had been a season of dirt, hardworking,
- 12:49smelly sheep. It had been a season of learning
- 12:54how to fight. the animals, becoming a warrior.
- 12:58It was learning how to worship when he's alone
- 13:01in this field and everybody has overlooked him.
- 13:08This was a season that formed David for his future.
- 13:17I think that in the next chapter here, we have
- 13:20an additional look at... the brotherly affection
- 13:23that was happening. If you go over to chapter
- 13:2617, we have the account with David and Goliath.
- 13:31And so David is taking some food to his brothers.
- 13:36And I think it's interesting to see here his
- 13:39interaction in verse 28 with Eliab, his oldest
- 13:44brother. He heard David and his anger, because
- 13:48David's like, what's going on here? Why are you
- 13:52Why aren't you out fighting? And he gets so angry
- 13:56with David. And he said, why did you come down
- 13:59here? Who did you leave the sheep with in the
- 14:04wilderness? He said, I know your pride and the
- 14:10insolence of your heart, for you have come down
- 14:13to see the battle. Man, Eliab did not have strong
- 14:16feelings. Well, he had strong feelings toward
- 14:18his brother. We're not seeing overly amounts
- 14:21of love, though, are we? And I love David's response
- 14:25because I feel like it's the response of many,
- 14:28especially the baby. I don't know. I think Faith
- 14:31left. She's the baby of the family, so maybe
- 14:33she can identify. But David's response to his
- 14:38brother is, what have I done now? Obviously,
- 14:44this was a common occurrence of interaction for
- 14:47David and his brother. What have I done now,
- 14:50Eliab? I just brought you food. What have I done
- 14:54now? So we can see that in his childhood years,
- 14:59it was not this wonderful, blissful, I'm just
- 15:06lying in the grass, strumming my harp, worshiping
- 15:09the Lord with pretty little sheep around me.
- 15:13No, it was hard, nasty work. And he was overlooked
- 15:18by his family. And yet it was in that place he
- 15:22learned to fight and he learned to worship. He
- 15:28learned to fight. It's in this season of abasement
- 15:32that David embraced. He could so easily have
- 15:37become embittered. He so easily could have been
- 15:40resentful. And what we find is that he learned
- 15:44to fight and he learned to worship. What are
- 15:47we doing in our season of abasement? What are
- 15:52we doing in our season of lack? Are we just becoming
- 15:57disgruntled because we've been overlooked? Because
- 16:02we've been passed over time and time again? Are
- 16:08we learning to worship? At the end of chapter
- 16:1716, see, he had been, and we're going to go into
- 16:23our next season, but we find him already in the
- 16:27courts of King Saul, and he's going back and
- 16:29forth between home and with King Saul. And even
- 16:35in this space, the brothers had no respect. He
- 16:39was still the annoying little brother. Running
- 16:44errands for his father. Listen, it might feel
- 16:51degrading. It might feel because you've been
- 16:54overlooked and you're in the season of just hard
- 16:56work that nobody sees. You're busy running errands
- 17:02for your father or whoever. Listen, it was when
- 17:08he was running errands for his father. That he
- 17:12encountered Goliath. If we will learn how to
- 17:17be in the season of need and lack and do it well.
- 17:22This is why I feel that this is so important.
- 17:25Because I know so many of you carry God -given
- 17:28purposes. And we have yet to see the fulfillment
- 17:32of all of it. Listen, if we will get these places,
- 17:36these spaces right. then we are setting ourselves
- 17:41up for the God moment. And it was in the basic
- 17:45running of errands to serve his brothers who
- 17:49overlooked him and found him annoying that God
- 17:53gave him his Goliath moment that sent him off
- 17:57into his future. How well will we do our season?
- 18:04Like Paul, I felt especially this, overlooking
- 18:10when I was writing this, that some of you here,
- 18:12I don't know, it may be in your job, your family,
- 18:15whatever, you've felt overlooked. Can I say to
- 18:19you, it does not matter if a man sees you, if
- 18:23God sees you. That's all that you need to know.
- 18:27God sees you. God, in that moment, nobody else
- 18:32can hear your worship. Nobody else can see you
- 18:36faithfully caring for the sheep. But God sees
- 18:40you. God does not overlook you. Man can overlook
- 18:45you on every side. But when it comes time, God
- 18:50has seen you, and he's the only one that matters.
- 18:54He sees you. He has not overlooked you. His second
- 18:59season that was transformational was Gibeah.
- 19:04And Gibeah was the city in which King Saul had
- 19:07set up as his royal city. And so King Saul, if
- 19:12you'll remember, now the kingdom had already
- 19:14been taken from him. And so what happened was
- 19:18the spirit of the Lord had been removed from
- 19:21King Saul, and now he was experiencing tormenting
- 19:25spirits. And so Saul, being tormented, said to
- 19:30his servants, provide me now a man who can play
- 19:36well and bring him to me. Oh, oh, here's a skill
- 19:44needed by the king in which David had learned
- 19:50when he was being overlooked. And one of the
- 19:55servants answered and said, Wow! One moment he's
- 20:19being overlooked and the next he's being lifted
- 20:23up to King Saul. How would you like that to be
- 20:27said about you in the king's presence? And so
- 20:34David is sent for. And whenever King Saul was
- 20:39tormented by these spirits, he would call for
- 20:42David and David would begin to play. And when
- 20:47David began to play, King Saul would be at peace.
- 20:55And so it's in this season, he's going back and
- 20:59forth between being in King Saul's residence
- 21:04and his father's residence. And so what is happening?
- 21:10He's beginning to see promotion. He's beginning
- 21:14to find, I have known abasement, but now I'm
- 21:18beginning to find provision. Now I'm beginning
- 21:23to be well fed. And it's from this place that
- 21:29he faces Goliath. And after he kills Goliath,
- 21:36He begins to be sent out by King Saul. And he
- 21:44begins to develop a reputation. And in fact,
- 21:49here's the testing in his time of beginning to
- 21:54be promoted. Proverbs actually says it in chapter
- 21:5727, verse 21. The crucible for silver and the
- 22:03furnace for gold. But people are tested by their
- 22:08praise. You will find when people begin to praise
- 22:14you, it becomes a testing time. And think of
- 22:19that when David in 17 .5 says this, David went
- 22:25out wherever Saul sent him and behaved wisely.
- 22:32And Saul set him over the men of war, and he
- 22:37was accepted in the sight of all the people.
- 22:41Can you imagine this young man having been overlooked
- 22:44by his family to suddenly being accepted by men
- 22:50everywhere? And not just men. Now, as it happened,
- 22:57they were coming home from battle. And when David
- 23:02was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine,
- 23:05the women had all come out of the cities of Israel
- 23:11singing and dancing. Can you imagine a young
- 23:14guy who has been overlooked by everybody suddenly
- 23:19coming into town and having it lined with singing
- 23:24and dancing of women? You can't tell me there
- 23:28was not testing. They've got their tambourines
- 23:34and their instruments. This is the language of
- 23:38David. David is a singer. David is a dancer.
- 23:43They are speaking his language. And as they sang
- 23:49and as they danced, they said, Oh, this had to
- 23:52just get Saul's goat. Saul has slain his thousands.
- 23:58David his... Tens of thousands. No king wants
- 24:04to hear that being sung throughout the land.
- 24:07But it's in this moment that the shifting takes
- 24:11place for David. He marries Michael and jealousy
- 24:16occurs and King Saul begins to turn from him.
- 24:20And it says that Saul saw and he knew that the
- 24:25Lord was with David. And Saul was more afraid
- 24:31of David, so Saul became David's enemy continually.
- 24:38It says that David acted more wisely than all
- 24:42the servants of Saul, and his name became highly
- 24:45esteemed. He began to come into promotion. He
- 24:50began... Far, far away did the fields of abasement
- 24:55and overlooking feel. Now he is being elevated.
- 24:59Now he's being sung praises. But now the king
- 25:03is against him. And suddenly all of that praise,
- 25:08all of that glory is gone. He had a taste of
- 25:14it for a moment. And it's gone. And suddenly
- 25:19he finds himself in his third season in the cave
- 25:26of Abolem, the cave of difficulty, about 16 miles
- 25:30outside of Jerusalem, the cave of Abolem. And
- 25:36this began seven years of running from King Saul.
- 25:43Can you imagine? He lives overlooked, and suddenly
- 25:49he's being anointed king. And then he's thrust
- 25:52into promotion, and suddenly it's all taken away
- 25:56from him, and he is now running for his life
- 26:00from King Saul. And all of the people that surrounded
- 26:06him was everybody in distress, everybody in debt,
- 26:12and everyone who was discontented. Way to build
- 26:17a kingdom. 400 of them. I'm just imagining 400
- 26:27of the lowest of the low, disgruntled in debt,
- 26:32discontented, now surrounding. These are his
- 26:37companions. And for seven years, he runs from
- 26:41King Saul. And we find him in chapter 27, where
- 26:47he said in his heart in verse 1, Now I shall
- 26:52perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is
- 26:58nothing better for me than I should speedily
- 27:02escape to the land of the Philistines. And Saul
- 27:06will despair of me. to seek me anymore in any
- 27:10part of Israel, and I will escape his hand. In
- 27:15this moment, the anointing he received to be
- 27:20king from Samuel was like a distant dream. Suddenly
- 27:26his future, what it looks like, is not being
- 27:30king. It is being killed by King Saul. He has
- 27:36mentally here given up. The anointing of being
- 27:41king. And all he sees in front of him is perishing.
- 27:46Has anybody ever been there? You've had the dream.
- 27:49You've had the anointing. You've had a prophetic
- 27:51word. And years down the road, you've yet to
- 27:56see the fulfillment of it. And you find yourself
- 27:59like King David. Well, I guess I'll just try
- 28:04to live this life the best I can live and die
- 28:07and go be with Jesus. Listen, that is not what
- 28:12he has for you. It's not what he planned for
- 28:16King David. It's not what he's planned for you.
- 28:26Following this season of running for seven years,
- 28:30in that season, I'm just going to quickly remind
- 28:35us of two things in this season. We have the
- 28:40scenario of Ziklag. Do you remember Ziklag? When
- 28:45David and his men had been out fighting and they
- 28:48came home to discover their wives had been taken
- 28:53captive, their sons and their daughters had been
- 28:58taken captive, and everything had been set fire.
- 29:08It feels a little bit like Job, doesn't it? He's
- 29:11already running, and now everything, the little
- 29:15bit he has, has been taken. How does David respond
- 29:24in this season? How would we respond? Lord, I've
- 29:30given you everything. I've said yes to you. And
- 29:33now you've taken my sons and my daughters. Now
- 29:36you've taken my wives. Now you've burned all
- 29:40my belongings. Is this what I get? Is that what
- 29:45David said? No. It says this, but David strengthened
- 29:52himself in the Lord. David strengthened himself
- 30:00in the Lord. He didn't go on Facebook complaining
- 30:06so that everybody could comfort him in the comments.
- 30:13He didn't go complaining to everybody that they
- 30:16knew would receive the complaining. No, he went
- 30:22straight to the Lord. And he strengthened himself
- 30:26in his God. It wasn't even that he had been taken.
- 30:33All of these things had been taken. And what
- 30:35he was facing was an extreme isolation because
- 30:41his own men had turned against him and were talking
- 30:44of stoning him because of what had happened.
- 30:48Again, his family that is around him. is ready
- 30:55to stone him. And how well does he handle his
- 31:01abasement? How well does he handle it? He strengthens
- 31:05himself in the Lord. I get challenged every time
- 31:11I read that account. It's a good account to read
- 31:15when everything feels like it's going bad in
- 31:17your life. Just pull out the story of Ziklag.
- 31:21And then read how David strengthened himself
- 31:23in the Lord. And it gives you a little perspective,
- 31:27doesn't it? Following this account, we read that
- 31:36Saul has died. The king has died. And this brings
- 31:43us into his next season of life. In Hebron, the
- 31:53beginning of his prophetic purpose. And this
- 31:56is interesting because if you heard the news
- 31:58that the king who had been chasing you to kill
- 32:01you had died, what would your immediate response
- 32:06be? Oh, this is it. It's time for me to be king
- 32:13of Israel. I was anointed for it. Saul is gone.
- 32:19it's time for me to be the king. This is my moment.
- 32:24You know, this isn't how David responded. In
- 32:292 Samuel chapter 2, in chapter 1, we read of
- 32:35the death of Saul. In chapter 2, it says, it
- 32:37happened after this that David inquired of the
- 32:41Lord, saying, shall I go up to any of the cities
- 32:46of Judah? to his clan, to his tribe. And the
- 32:52Lord said to him, go up. And he then followed
- 32:57with, well, where shall I go up? And God said
- 33:02to him, to Hebron. I love his heart. He's now
- 33:09entering again. He's leaving the abasement. And
- 33:13now he's about to come again into the place of
- 33:16abundance. Such an up and down life he had. And
- 33:21he's about to enter into promotion once again.
- 33:25But his immediate response, I love, God, what
- 33:30now? God, what should I do? He's not just going
- 33:36and demanding, hey, everybody, Samuel anointed
- 33:39me to be king. I'm up. It's my turn. Tag, I'm
- 33:44it. He didn't do that. No, he said, God, where
- 33:49should I go? What should I do? And it's in this
- 33:55place. This is his tribe. And it says that Judah,
- 34:00the men of Judah came to David after he had gone
- 34:04back. They came to David and they anointed him.
- 34:14They anointed him to be the king over the house
- 34:18of Judah. So what we find in this season is the
- 34:23partial promotion. He is not king over all of
- 34:27Israel in this moment. He is only king of the
- 34:31house of Judah. And in this place, He could begin
- 34:40to say, God, it's my time. You anointed me over
- 34:43all of Israel. I've only got Judah behind me.
- 34:47I thought I was supposed to be king over all.
- 34:52I feel like David's heart is in such a place
- 34:56that if God had said to him, David, I want you
- 34:59to go back to Bethlehem, I believe he would have
- 35:03done it. I want you to go back to your homeland.
- 35:06I believe he would have done it. His heart was
- 35:11open. God, what should I do? Where should I go?
- 35:16And so in this state of abundance, he's begun
- 35:21to move toward the fulfillment of it. He stayed
- 35:26in this place for seven and a half years in a
- 35:34partial fulfillment of his purpose. Seven and
- 35:39a half years. And here's my takeaway from his
- 35:43initial promotion. Right after he returned to
- 35:51Judah, there were men from Jebesh Gilead who
- 36:00had buried King Saul with honor. And David hears
- 36:06of this. And he sends a message to the men of
- 36:12Gilead. And he says to them, of the man that
- 36:17was trying to kill him, you are blessed of the
- 36:21Lord, for you have shown this kindness to your
- 36:24Lord, to Saul, and have buried him. This strikes
- 36:30me because I just wonder what I might have done.
- 36:36About the person that had been trying to kill
- 36:39me. When I got into my place of promotion and
- 36:45provision and abundance, and I look back to the
- 36:49last seven years of running from King Saul, I
- 36:54wonder what my attitude would have been toward
- 36:56him. Look at the trauma you caused me, King Saul.
- 37:00Look at everything I lost because of King Saul.
- 37:05with an embittered spirit for those last seven
- 37:09years, and you do not see that. He blesses and
- 37:14honors the men that buried his enemy. There's
- 37:20a lesson here. When we're in our places of blessing
- 37:25and provision, how we view those that have wounded
- 37:31us, those that have been out after us and against
- 37:34us. God needs to be able to trust us with our
- 37:40enemies. He concludes in 2 Samuel 3. as we're
- 37:50coming into the end of his season in Hebron.
- 37:53Now there was a long war between the house of
- 37:56Saul and the house of David, because there was
- 37:58another that had tried to rise up and take that
- 38:01house of Israel. And so there was a long season
- 38:04of conflict. It says, though, David grew stronger
- 38:11and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker
- 38:15and weaker. Listen, God will do it. God will
- 38:24do it. God will make you stronger and stronger
- 38:28and stronger. And your enemy weaker and weaker
- 38:33and weaker. But how we handle the abundance.
- 38:38And then he finally moves into his fifth season,
- 38:43the glorious season. Zion, the promise fulfilled.
- 38:48How many of you love that place? This is the
- 38:51place. Yes, Lord, this is what you have destined
- 38:54me for. And in 2 Samuel 5, finally, all the tribes
- 39:01of Israel come to David. And David took the stronghold
- 39:08of Zion. That is the city of David. And it says
- 39:13in verse 10, so David went on and became great,
- 39:16and the Lord God of hosts was with him. Now here's
- 39:23an interesting verse. These are the things we
- 39:26have to learn in the places of abundance. And
- 39:30we only learn them, I think, if we learned the
- 39:34season of lack well. It says David knew. He knew.
- 39:41That the Lord had established him as king over
- 39:46Israel. He knew it didn't come from his own manipulation
- 39:51of trying to make the promises of God come true
- 39:54for himself. God had established him as king.
- 39:58And that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake
- 40:04of David? No. For the sake of his people, Israel.
- 40:11Israel. David knew this. And the times that David
- 40:18struggled in his season of abundance, because
- 40:21David didn't always handle his abundance well,
- 40:23did he? He had seasons of pride. I think of the
- 40:28census when he began to count his men and the
- 40:33Lord had to bring consequences to him. He had
- 40:38his seasons of self. absorbedness with Bathsheba
- 40:43and her husband. He didn't always handle it well,
- 40:48but what you find is that David was a repentant
- 40:52man, and this is good news for us. Because we
- 40:57don't always handle our lack well, and we don't
- 41:00always handle our abundance well. But if we will
- 41:04have a heart toward God, a heart of repentance,
- 41:07if we will recognize that God's mercies are new
- 41:10every morning, and I can come before him just
- 41:14as David did, and I can repent, he is restoring
- 41:19God. He will restore us. I think of when King
- 41:27David, because even in his fulfillment of becoming
- 41:32king of Israel, it doesn't mean that everything
- 41:34went okay for him. And I think of when his own
- 41:38son, Absalom, wanted the kingdom. And his own
- 41:45son betrayed his father, David. His own son tried
- 41:50to win the loyalty, the affection in the hearts
- 41:54of Israel so they would make him king. And David,
- 41:58because of his own son, had to run again in the
- 42:02wilderness. I can't imagine. Again, he's lost
- 42:09his home. He's lost his kingdom for these moments
- 42:14as Absalom is taking the throne. And as he is
- 42:20running, there is one from the house of Saul
- 42:23that begins to curse him and curse him. And David's
- 42:28man wants to go and kill him. And I love even
- 42:31in this moment, if David once again in the place
- 42:34of abasement, after being king of Israel, he
- 42:40says, no, you don't know that God didn't send
- 42:44him. You don't know that that is not from God.
- 42:50Can you imagine? Continually a heart of saying,
- 42:57God, have your way in my life. In the good, in
- 43:03the bad, in the ugly, have your way in my life.
- 43:09There was a saint back in 225. 225. This was
- 43:18the early church. And St. Lawrence was born in
- 43:24Spain. And St. Lawrence served as a deacon in
- 43:30Rome during time of major persecution. And one
- 43:38of the most notable stories of St. Lawrence is
- 43:42that of his martyrdom. It's interesting. Sometimes
- 43:47we get turned away because we hear the word saint
- 43:50and we think of, you know, Orthodox or Catholic.
- 43:54But a lot of these men and women were amazing
- 43:57men and women of God. And he is martyred for
- 44:04his faith. The emperor at the time had it out
- 44:09for all Christians. But he specifically had his
- 44:14sights. on St. Lawrence. He gave Lawrence the
- 44:21opportunity to save himself, asking Lawrence
- 44:26to show him where all the church's gold and silver
- 44:30were. He wanted in in the money bags of the church.
- 44:38And so when asked for the gold and the silver
- 44:41of the church, Lawrence returned three days later.
- 44:47And he had with him the poor, the sick, the handicapped.
- 44:56And he presented to the emperor, here, this is
- 45:00the wealth of the church. They had a different
- 45:04view of lack. Of a basement? Enraged, he put
- 45:14Lawrence, he had him burned in public on a griddle.
- 45:22And I love, this is the beauty of martyrs. There's
- 45:25a grace that comes on those, I believe, being
- 45:28martyred. And they are always known in those
- 45:31moments to have such joy. The martyrs of the
- 45:35early church were known for their joy and their
- 45:38singing as they were being led to their death.
- 45:41And St. Lawrence was no different. He's in that
- 45:46moment of execution. He's joking with the guards.
- 45:50And he's saying, it's time to turn me over. I'm
- 45:55done on this side. Can you imagine? Flip, it's
- 46:00time to flip me over. I made pancakes this weekend.
- 46:04What does he have? There is in, it's a spirit
- 46:09that Paul had. It matters not whether I am in
- 46:15the place of provision or poverty. I have learned
- 46:19how to do both well. And I often think that the
- 46:23breakthroughs we believe for aren't happening.
- 46:27Because we have yet to learn some things well
- 46:30in the places of restraint and restriction that
- 46:35God wants us to get. I know you guys get so excited
- 46:41and amening at my sermons. You're like, bring
- 46:44Darren back. Let's believe for breakthrough.
- 46:50Think about the life of Paul. How much he spent.
- 46:56imprisoned, being beaten. He wrote 13 of the
- 47:0227 books of the New Testament, four of those
- 47:06he wrote while being imprisoned, a home imprisonment,
- 47:12but still he was restrained and restricted. And
- 47:16he wrote Philippians while being imprisoned.
- 47:23So while he's in restraint, he's saying, hey,
- 47:26I know what it is to abound and be well fed.
- 47:30And I know what it is to be restricted and abased.
- 47:33As he's imprisoned, he writes this. And he says,
- 47:36I can do all things through Christ who strengthens
- 47:40me. I can do all things, the abasement, the poverty,
- 47:46the restriction. I can do all things. He wrote
- 47:49Ephesians while being restricted. I love Ephesians.
- 47:54Ephesians talks about how we are rich in Christ.
- 47:58It talks about how he lavishes all grace on us.
- 48:03And we read that and we think, oh, God's lavishing
- 48:06all grace. I'm going to do all this great stuff.
- 48:08Listen, he lavishes grace on us. so that in poverty
- 48:12and in wealth, we can do all well because we
- 48:17have grace. 2 Corinthians chapter 12, Paul wrote
- 48:26this. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming
- 48:32conceited, isn't it good to know our own weaknesses?
- 48:39I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger
- 48:42of Satan to torment me. Three times, much like
- 48:47Jesus, he pleaded that it would be taken. Let
- 48:51this cut pass. But he said, my grace is sufficient
- 48:56for you. For my power is made perfect in what?
- 49:01In strength? In weakness. We have to learn to
- 49:07do weakness well. Because it's there that his
- 49:11power is made perfect in your life. But when
- 49:15we have unforgiveness, when we have resistance,
- 49:18when we are just frustrated and upset with God
- 49:21because we're in this place of weakness, we're
- 49:24cutting off the source of strength. Therefore,
- 49:32he said, I'll boast in my weaknesses so that
- 49:35Christ... power may rest on me. Therefore, for
- 49:42Christ's sake, I delight in weakness, in insults,
- 49:47in hardships, in persecutions, and in difficulties.
- 49:53I'm wondering when we're getting together, are
- 49:58we delighting in, hey man, everything went wrong
- 50:01for me this week. Praise the Lord. That must
- 50:05mean he's doing, that means I have access to
- 50:08his power. That must mean God's up to something.
- 50:11Praise the Lord. I've had trials this week. I've
- 50:14had difficulties this week. I fear that that's
- 50:17not how we're talking about our struggles. For
- 50:23when I am weak, then I am strong. We cannot wait
- 50:29for the places of abundance to begin to walk
- 50:32out. what God has called us to do. He's looking
- 50:35for us in the places of restraint and restriction
- 50:39to begin to do it. You can't wait for a better
- 50:43moment. You can't wait for a perfect opportunity.
- 50:46It is the call of obedience. God, you've called
- 50:49me to do this, so I'm going to do it in the lack.
- 50:52I'm going to do it in the restraint and the restriction.
- 50:55Paul carried out his purpose. He didn't say,
- 50:59well, I'm imprisoned, everybody, so get in touch
- 51:02with one of the other apostles, please. He didn't
- 51:09wallow. He didn't complain. Was it hard? Yes.
- 51:13Would he have preferred to have the cup passed
- 51:16from him? For sure. In fact, he said, I persevered
- 51:25in demonstrating among you. the marks of a true
- 51:29apostle, including signs, wonders, and miracles,
- 51:33even in the hardship. I'm going to ask the worship
- 51:37team to come. I know that I preached a little
- 51:39longer today, but I really believe with all of
- 51:45my heart that God's given to each of you, God
- 51:49-given purposes and promises, and the years have
- 51:56gone by. I've yet to really see in the Bible
- 51:59great men and women that have not gone through
- 52:03seasons of abasement and trial before they were
- 52:09brought into the fulfillment of God's purposes.
- 52:12I've yet to really see them, even in the fulfillment
- 52:15of it, to not see them in difficulty. And I want
- 52:21us I want us to grab hold of Paul's attitude.
- 52:26I have learned. God, I'm not handling my lack
- 52:31well. I'm not handling my physical ailments well.
- 52:36I'm not handling my financial situation well.
- 52:39I'm not handling my loneliness well. Would you
- 52:44teach me? I want to learn like Paul learned.
- 52:48Would you teach me contentment in these places?
- 52:53Would you teach me to be satisfied by your presence
- 52:57in these places? I don't want to be a fair weather
- 53:01follower. I want to follow you on the path of
- 53:07Gethsemane if need be. I want to be where your
- 53:12presence is at. And for some of us that may mean,
- 53:17I've had to in my heart as I've asked this question,
- 53:21Lord, do I trust your restraint on my life? It
- 53:27doesn't feel safe. It doesn't feel secure. The
- 53:31unknown is scary. Do I trust your restraint in
- 53:35my life? I've had to ask myself hard questions.
- 53:39I've had to repent of attitudes. in the restraint.
- 53:47And for some of us today, that might be you saying,
- 53:51I've not been doing it well. In fact, I've not
- 53:54even been open to learning how to do it well.
- 53:58In these final moments as we worship, I want
- 54:03you just to find a space, whether it's at your
- 54:05seat or at this altar, I don't care. But can
- 54:09we begin to just say to the Lord, Lord, Forgive
- 54:14me for being resentful and carrying unforgiveness,
- 54:19for despising the places of lack, for being discontented
- 54:27and embittered. Would you forgive me? I want
- 54:32to make those spaces now sacred spaces of your
- 54:37presence. Places where I encounter you. Your
- 54:44presence is enough, Jesus. Your presence is enough,
- 54:50Jesus. And so if you'll stand with me in a few
- 54:54moments, we'll be finished. But I don't want
- 54:57to leave without creating a space to respond
- 55:00to the Lord. I'm walking out of here saying,
- 55:04I'm going to do the difficult places differently.
- 55:11them places where the power of Christ is displayed
- 55:15I'm gonna make them the places where I encounter
- 55:18the suffering of Christ the fellowship of the
- 55:22suffering of Christ he wants to encounter with
- 55:26you in those places he wants to encounter with
- 55:31you And so as the team leads us, I want you to
- 55:35be respectful. If you're having to leave, if
- 55:38you could just slip out quietly, because we want
- 55:40to make this place a place of response to the
- 55:44Lord, a place of encounter to the Lord. Thank
- 55:50you, Lord.
