Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, the truth about sorority life, with
• 0:04
Speaker 1: your hosts, me, Gia Giudice, Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler.
• 0:11
Speaker 1: Hi guys, welcome back to another episode of Dirty Rush.
• 0:15
Speaker 1: Today we are joined by professional sorority videographer, Hisu Yang,
• 0:19
Speaker 1: who has produced hundreds of videos for countless chapters all
• 0:23
Speaker 1: over the country. If anyone can reveal whether these chapters
• 0:26
Speaker 1: are really picture perfect, it's him. Welcome Hisu. How is
• 0:31
  Speaker 1: life post-recruitment season?
• 0:34
Speaker 2: Rushes over so I can finally sleep. So it's been amazing.
• 0:38
Speaker 1: Good. How was the season overall? Was it crazy busy?
• 0:41
Speaker 2: It was crazy. I did 16 workweek videos over five
• 0:45
Speaker 2: days at TC this year. So that's like three or
• 0:49
  Speaker 2: four a day.
• 0:50
Speaker 1: That's crazy. So let's give the listeners a little bit
• 0:55
Speaker 1: of background about yourself. Where did you go to college?
• 0:57
Speaker 1: Were you involved in Greek life? How did you get
• 1:00
Speaker 1: into videography? Tell us all the inside.
• 1:04
Speaker 2: So, yeah, I went to TCU. Shout out, Shelby. Let's go.
• 1:08
Speaker 2: Go Frogs. I was a wee little freshman in 2017,
• 1:13
Speaker 2: and my parents didn't really go to college in the
• 1:15
Speaker 2: United States, so didn't know anything about sororities. Like, literally
• 1:21
Speaker 2: the first week I'm there, there's all these girls in
• 1:23
Speaker 2: white shirts running across campus, and I'm just like, what
• 1:26
  Speaker 2: is going on?
• 1:28
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 1:29
  Speaker 2: I didn't join a fraternity. I didn't really do any
• 1:31
Speaker 2: of that. I was always interested in videography. I was
• 1:35
Speaker 2: a film major. And then I got an on-campus job
• 1:39
Speaker 2: as a froggy five-wheel driver. So that's the safety escort
• 1:43
Speaker 2: through TCU police department where we were the ones driving
• 1:47
Speaker 2: up in like golf carts at night if girls felt
• 1:49
Speaker 2: unsafe and then they wanted a ride across campus.
• 1:52
Speaker 1: Yes, I remember that.
• 1:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, I kept doing that. And then I met this
• 1:57
Speaker 2: DG guy social media chair and she was like, yo,
• 2:05
Speaker 2: you do videos? And I was like, yeah. And then
• 2:10
Speaker 2: one thing led to another and I started doing videos
• 2:12
Speaker 2: with them and then COVID hit and that just totally
• 2:17
Speaker 2: changed the game. Everything went virtual and then everybody needed
• 2:20
Speaker 2: videos and then I just happened to be one of
• 2:24
Speaker 2: the only guys to have done anything with sororities video wise.
• 2:30
Speaker 2: And that just really jumpstarted my business. And I've been
• 2:33
Speaker 2: making a full time income just off of like, sorority
• 2:36
Speaker 2: recruitment videos since 2020.
• 2:38
Speaker 1: So when you were first reached out to what year
• 2:41
Speaker 1: was that? Was that 2019? You said it was pre COVID.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: So it was actually 2017 2018. Okay, so like my
• 2:45
  Speaker 2: freshman year.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: Wow. And that was like a whole nother world back
• 2:53
Speaker 1: then because now sorority videos are just like the biggest
• 2:56
Speaker 1: thing and everyone has a videographer. But when you did
• 2:59
Speaker 1: that in 2017, it was probably kind of the first
• 3:01
Speaker 1: era of like professional sorority videos.
• 3:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, there was no videos at all. Like if anything,
• 3:08
Speaker 2: it was like some fraternity guy that was dating somebody
• 3:12
Speaker 2: within like a chapter and they made a cool little
• 3:16
Speaker 2: edit and then it got posted on Instagram before Instagram
• 3:19
Speaker 2: was like a big thing. And yeah, like it was
• 3:23
Speaker 2: iMovie videos basically. And I kind of hopped on that
• 3:28
Speaker 2: train and now like looking at like the industry that
• 3:31
Speaker 2: I feel like I helped build, it's just insane where
• 3:36
  Speaker 2: we came from.
• 3:37
Speaker 1: Crazy. Cause now like we have on this podcast dug
• 3:41
Speaker 1: into so much of work week and what it looks
• 3:44
Speaker 1: like throughout, sororities all over the U S and like
• 3:48
Speaker 1: all of them have professional sorority videographers like you, it
• 3:51
  Speaker 1: seems like.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Like every single one.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: You said that this sort of fell into your lap
• 3:57
Speaker 3: and now that it's like such a big digital media
• 4:01
Speaker 3: presence in sororities and work week in general, how have
• 4:05
Speaker 3: you found like the competition between videographers now? Have you
• 4:08
Speaker 3: found other people to try to poach your sororities from
• 4:12
Speaker 3: you or how, what does that look like?
• 4:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, there is about three of us that do this
• 4:19
Speaker 2: like full time in the country. There's a little bit more. Well,
• 4:24
Speaker 2: like there's three of us who take on the volume
• 4:27
Speaker 2: that we do. There's only a certain amount of sororities
• 4:32
Speaker 2: that can pay for these high production media. So yeah,
• 4:39
Speaker 2: definitely we are competition, but what I found on And
• 4:46
Speaker 2: they all agree. We've all talked about this together. Like
• 4:48
Speaker 2: we're all friends and there's enough for, and there's enough
• 4:53
Speaker 2: sororities for all of us to like have, there's enough
• 4:56
  Speaker 2: to go around.
• 4:57
Speaker 3: Yeah. So during like the height of it all, when
• 5:01
Speaker 3: recruitment is going on and you're filming all of those videos,
• 5:05
Speaker 3: is it hard to balance the amount of sororities you
• 5:08
Speaker 3: have to work with?
• 5:10
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 5:11
Speaker 2: Like this year for work week, especially that was five,
• 5:16
Speaker 2: TCU chapters. So that means I was starting filming at
• 5:20
Speaker 2: 9am and I was done filming at 3.30. So like
• 5:23
Speaker 2: I wasn't really eating in between. And in order for
• 5:26
Speaker 2: me to even prepare for that, I spent three months
• 5:30
Speaker 2: preparing for those five days just at TCU. And that's
• 5:34
Speaker 2: not including like stuff I've done at SMU and like
• 5:37
Speaker 2: bid days and other coverage that I've done at other schools.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: Do you have favorites?
• 5:43
Speaker 2: All of my chapters on my favorite. That's, that's the answer.
• 5:46
Speaker 1: I'm sure you have a soft spot for Delta camera though,
• 5:49
Speaker 1: considering they were like the first ones to reach out
• 5:51
Speaker 1: to you. Like that makes so much sense.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, I try to like, make sure that I
• 5:57
Speaker 2: give equal effort, but every now and then on Yik Yak,
• 6:00
Speaker 2: you see like, Ooh, he says favorites. But yeah, they
• 6:07
Speaker 2: gave me my first opportunity and, and actually, 2020, like
• 6:12
Speaker 2: whenever COVID hit and school was like canceled, basically, they
• 6:19
Speaker 2: honored my contract. There was no videos and they honored
• 6:23
Speaker 2: my contract. So shout out to them because they didn't
• 6:26
Speaker 2: need to do that. And that actually, that check that
• 6:30
Speaker 2: I got paid for the camera that I would be
• 6:32
Speaker 2: shooting for all my other sororities down the road.
• 6:35
Speaker 3: Oh, wow. Wait, Delta Gamma did that?
• 6:38
Speaker 2: Yeah, TC Delta Gamma. I love them so much.
• 6:41
Speaker 1: Shout out TC Delta Gamma. That's awesome. So after you
• 6:44
Speaker 1: worked with Delta Gamma before COVID and during COVID, what sororities,
• 6:49
Speaker 1: like what did you start? Did you have two the
• 6:51
Speaker 1: next year? Like how did you start getting involved with
• 6:53
Speaker 1: more sororities than just DG?
• 6:56
Speaker 2: Yeah. So it was just DG from like 2017 to
• 7:00
Speaker 2: 2020 COVID hit. And then I got a DM from
• 7:04
Speaker 2: TC Pi Phi. So that was my next big chapter.
• 7:10
Speaker 2: That kind of became a snowball effect because everybody was like, oh, he,
• 7:16
Speaker 2: he actually works with other chapters too. And I can
• 7:20
Speaker 2: say proudly, but over the last 10 years that I've
• 7:23
Speaker 2: done this, every single house at TCU has reached out
• 7:26
Speaker 2: to me at some point.
• 7:28
  Speaker 1: Wow.
• 7:29
  Speaker 2: That's awesome.
• 7:30
Speaker 1: You're a legend at TCU. So obviously during the week
• 7:36
Speaker 1: of recruitment, there's so much happening. there's so much going
• 7:40
Speaker 1: on and there's a lot of gossip between houses, especially
• 7:44
Speaker 1: I feel like with the round one videos, like as
• 7:46
Speaker 1: someone who went to TCU myself, I just remember like
• 7:50
Speaker 1: what the other houses were doing. It was, how do
• 7:53
Speaker 1: you like handle, like, I'm sure lots of girls will
• 7:55
Speaker 1: be like, well, do you know what they're doing? And
• 7:57
Speaker 1: do you know what they're doing? How do you like
• 7:58
Speaker 1: handle all the gossip between sororities? Like to the best
• 8:01
  Speaker 1: that you can.
• 8:02
Speaker 2: I just try to keep it really professional, just have
• 8:06
Speaker 2: good vibes. Um, I've actually stopped working with a few
• 8:11
Speaker 2: sororities here and there over time just because I think
• 8:17
Speaker 2: it's really hard to make sure that they feel like
• 8:21
Speaker 2: they're your favorite, that they're your priority. I think comparison
• 8:25
Speaker 2: is just natural. And I try my best. Sometimes they
• 8:30
Speaker 2: say things out of pocket and I try to not
• 8:32
Speaker 2: get my feelings hurt. I try my best to be
• 8:37
Speaker 2: a professional about it.
• 8:39
Speaker 3: Are you able to elaborate on why you had to
• 8:41
Speaker 3: stop working with certain sororities? You don't have to name
• 8:44
Speaker 3: any names, but I'd love to hear what happened.
• 8:50
Speaker 2: So I offer the same amount of pre-production time, and
• 8:54
Speaker 2: I give the same exact speech in my onboarding meetings
• 8:58
Speaker 2: about my expectations. But certain recruitment chairs, they might decide
• 9:03
Speaker 2: to just go out and darty the day before we
• 9:07
Speaker 2: start filming. Okay. So then like shoots get disorganized, but
• 9:12
Speaker 2: that's not really my issue. But as far as like
• 9:16
Speaker 2: the stakeholders go, especially like the advisors, they're like, Oh
• 9:19
Speaker 2: my God, like, why is our videos so much different
• 9:23
Speaker 2: than our competitions video? And that's not really my problem,
• 9:30
Speaker 2: but it becomes my problem. And then other times. might
• 9:37
Speaker 2: feel a certain type of way thinking oh like he's
• 9:40
Speaker 2: prioritizing another chapter so then I've had this happen to
• 9:45
Speaker 2: me a lot and I've had my other videographer friends
• 9:49
Speaker 2: same situation where they basically put you through like the
• 9:53
Speaker 2: equivalent of honor board or judicial J board however you
• 9:57
Speaker 2: guys yeah know it yeah they put you through that
• 10:00
Speaker 2: and i'm just sitting there in front of like three
• 10:03
Speaker 2: adults and like then like different members of exec and
• 10:07
Speaker 2: they're just laying down judgment.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: On you oh my goodness and you can only give
• 10:13
Speaker 3: what you're given and so if you're met with people
• 10:16
Speaker 3: that aren't taking it as seriously as maybe another chapter,
• 10:19
Speaker 3: then obviously you're not going to be able to have
• 10:21
  Speaker 3: the same output.
• 10:22
Speaker 1: You're like, you're the one who showed up hungover after
• 10:25
Speaker 1: the darty. So I try not.
• 10:27
Speaker 2: To get my feelings hurt. Like I understand like this
• 10:29
Speaker 2: is serious, but Oh, whenever like an 18, 19 year
• 10:34
Speaker 2: old assistant recruitment chair, like dresses you down. Ooh, that's like, what's.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: The worst insult you've got?
• 10:41
Speaker 2: Uh, this one girl was like, I want you to
• 10:45
Speaker 2: know that we are being crystal clear crystal. And that's
• 10:51
Speaker 2: like how it sounded. Um, and she was like, we
• 10:58
Speaker 2: are very unhappy with you.
• 11:00
  Speaker 1: Whoa. Just patronizing.
• 11:03
Speaker 2: Just very patronizing. Yeah. Like, you know, the feeling you
• 11:07
Speaker 2: get when you're in being put in timeout, like that
• 11:11
Speaker 2: was like the feeling that I got.
• 11:12
Speaker 3: By 18 year olds.
• 11:15
  Speaker 2: Yeah. 18, 19 year olds.
• 11:16
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 11:17
Speaker 1: So kind of on this topic, I'm sure there's so
• 11:21
Speaker 1: many things you love about the job, but like, what's
• 11:24
Speaker 1: one thing that's just like a hard thing to navigate
• 11:26
Speaker 1: with your job in the recruitment season specifically? Because I'm
• 11:30
Speaker 1: sure off season is very different, but like during recruitment season,
• 11:32
Speaker 1: what's something you would say is hard to navigate?
• 11:38
Speaker 2: I think just the fact that these recruitment chairs are,
• 11:44
Speaker 2: are in the position for one year. Yeah. And then
• 11:48
Speaker 2: they just move on and then you're just expected to
• 11:50
Speaker 2: absorb a new recruitment chair.
• 11:52
  Speaker 1: For sure.
• 11:53
Speaker 2: And it's just like whiplash because one year you could
• 11:57
Speaker 2: have like such an amazing time with a chapter and
• 12:00
Speaker 2: they're your favorite and you love them so much. And
• 12:03
Speaker 2: then next year, they're just the bane of your existence.
• 12:05
  Speaker 1: Oh gosh.
• 12:06
Speaker 3: So you do have favorites.
• 12:10
  Speaker 1: No, that's natural. That's natural.
• 12:12
Speaker 3: Um, I also wanted to know when preparation starts during
• 12:16
Speaker 3: off season and is it earlier and earlier as, um,
• 12:21
Speaker 3: sort of media presence becomes more of a thing that
• 12:23
Speaker 3: sororities are trying to perfect.
• 12:26
Speaker 2: Yeah. My longer accounts, we actually set up a meeting
• 12:31
Speaker 2: the day the girl gets slated for her position. Oh, wow.
• 12:36
Speaker 2: So what, I guess, like, for example, November is, like,
• 12:41
Speaker 2: a very common time. Mm-hmm. I'm literally texting the recruitment chair, like,
• 12:48
Speaker 2: a week before Thanksgiving break, and we're setting up times
• 12:51
  Speaker 2: to meet.
• 12:53
Speaker 3: For the fall of next year?
• 12:55
Speaker 2: Yes, for the whole recruitment for next year, yeah. Wow.
• 13:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy. And I know you do videos for
• 13:02
Speaker 1: some sororities, like, in the off-season for, like, philanthropy events and, obviously...
• 13:08
Speaker 1: filming starts pretty early for the round one video as
• 13:11
  Speaker 1: well usually.
• 13:12
Speaker 2: Yeah I start my testimonial filming so that's like the
• 13:16
Speaker 2: one where like you sit down and you're like with
• 13:19
Speaker 2: your sisters and you talk about like how much you
• 13:21
Speaker 2: care about each other. We filmed that around late January
• 13:26
  Speaker 2: early February.
• 13:26
Speaker 1: Yeah I remember that.
• 13:28
Speaker 2: And then once the weather gets a little bit warmer
• 13:31
Speaker 2: that's when we start filming like the cute little scenes
• 13:34
Speaker 2: that go on top of those videos. Okay.
• 13:36
Speaker 3: So in those scenes, how are the featured members chosen?
• 13:42
Speaker 2: We're very intentional. It's very important to have as many
• 13:48
Speaker 2: sophomores or freshman incoming sophomores. So I give them like
• 13:57
Speaker 2: a ratio, like 50 to 60% of the girls that
• 14:00
Speaker 2: are featured need to come from that grade. And then...
• 14:04
Speaker 2: 30 to 40 needs to come from like the juniors
• 14:08
Speaker 2: and then about 10% seniors, just because I think that's
• 14:13
Speaker 2: a good representation. And really when you're going through recruitment,
• 14:20
Speaker 2: it's those sophomores that are going to be the future
• 14:22
Speaker 2: bigs to a lot of these freshmen.
• 14:25
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 14:26
Speaker 3: Have you ever seen people sort of fighting for the
• 14:30
Speaker 3: spotlight and how do you navigate that?
• 14:33
Speaker 2: I just try to have good vibes on set.
• 14:36
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: And we just make sure that the expectations are clear.
• 14:44
Speaker 2: Just because you're being filmed doesn't mean you're going to
• 14:47
Speaker 2: get featured. Ooh. So we always film.
• 14:52
Speaker 1: That happened to me. That happened to me. I got
• 14:55
  Speaker 1: the cut.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: We always film more than what we need. And that
• 14:59
Speaker 2: usually keeps girls accountable to just like, represent themselves properly
• 15:05
  Speaker 2: on set.
• 15:06
Speaker 1: For sure. And you want to like look the part,
• 15:09
Speaker 1: not be hung over. And I remember there's like specific
• 15:13
Speaker 1: rules to like, you don't want your knees out because
• 15:16
Speaker 1: they like video weird on camera.
• 15:17
Speaker 2: Or that's just my preference.
• 15:20
Speaker 1: But I remember my knees were out and it didn't
• 15:23
  Speaker 1: look good.
• 15:24
Speaker 3: That's why you got the cut, Shelby.
• 15:25
Speaker 1: It was my knees.
• 15:41
Speaker 3: Have you ever been requested by a fraternity to shoot
• 15:45
Speaker 3: for their Rush videos?
• 15:47
Speaker 2: Not Rush videos? Well, I've had a few. I've turned
• 15:50
Speaker 2: them down. Stuff that I do with fraternities, though, TCU has, like,
• 15:55
Speaker 2: this thing called High Cap Push. It's where all the
• 15:59
Speaker 2: freshman girls, like, they do, like, a dance competition, and
• 16:04
Speaker 2: they raise money for their philanthropy. And I think that
• 16:08
Speaker 2: fits my length. And that's something I really do enjoy.
• 16:12
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 16:13
Speaker 3: So it's more so like a preference.
• 16:15
Speaker 2: Yeah. I think also I know fraternity people, like old people,
• 16:21
Speaker 2: I guess not old, but like 40, 50 year olds
• 16:23
Speaker 2: that are still, still dealing with litigation from whenever they
• 16:27
Speaker 2: were in the fraternity, like in college.
• 16:30
Speaker 3: So safest for you to steer clear.
• 16:33
Speaker 2: I just feel like I don't want to get subpoenaed
• 16:36
Speaker 2: like 30, 40 years down the road because I have
• 16:38
  Speaker 2: relevant footage.
• 16:39
Speaker 1: And like, what would you do for a fraternity rush video?
• 16:43
  Speaker 2: It's pretty cool. Like A & M, like that's like
• 16:46
Speaker 2: a big thing there.
• 16:46
  Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure.
• 16:48
Speaker 2: So like those videos are hype. It's just a little
• 16:51
Speaker 2: weird though, in my opinion, but it's just a bunch
• 16:52
Speaker 2: of dudes like in the gym.
• 16:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, like what are they doing?
• 16:55
Speaker 2: Hurries and raves. And then it's like some EDM mix
• 16:59
Speaker 2: and you're just like.
• 17:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's so different than sorority recruitment. It's so wildly different.
• 17:05
Speaker 1: To kind of switch gears.
• 17:07
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 17:08
Speaker 1: Work week is obviously like, I feel like you would
• 17:11
Speaker 1: admit the busiest time just because there's so much going
• 17:13
Speaker 1: on every day. And I feel like this is where
• 17:15
Speaker 1: we're really seeing a social media presence in these professional videos.
• 17:20
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 17:21
Speaker 1: So I want to know like, how has... TikTok videos,
• 17:25
Speaker 1: Instagram videos that they do of the specific themes every day.
• 17:29
Speaker 1: How has like your job switched with this? Like not
• 17:33
Speaker 1: just the round one videos that we've been talking about,
• 17:35
Speaker 1: but more the social media, TikTok, Instagram reels.
• 17:39
Speaker 2: Yeah. When it was just recruitment videos out, that was nice.
• 17:42
Speaker 2: It was just fun. And then actually with Zeta, that
• 17:46
Speaker 2: was like the first time that I did any work
• 17:48
Speaker 2: week videos. Oh, Oh, interesting. And that was like, TCU
• 17:52
Speaker 2: has never done work week videos before that point. So
• 17:55
Speaker 2: I was like ahead of the, ahead of the trend,
• 17:58
  Speaker 2: I feel like.
• 17:59
  Speaker 1: Look at you.
• 18:01
Speaker 2: And when I first started, it was just like, you
• 18:03
Speaker 2: just come film for like 30 minutes every day. And
• 18:06
Speaker 2: then at the end of the week, like you just
• 18:08
Speaker 2: kind of build like one, like cute little week long recap.
• 18:13
Speaker 2: But as we've done this and as like the demand
• 18:17
Speaker 2: has gone up, That switched over to like, oh, we
• 18:20
Speaker 2: need to post videos daily. Like I think Alabama was
• 18:23
Speaker 2: like one of the first to do that. And that's
• 18:26
Speaker 2: when the TCU girls, like they DM me and they
• 18:29
Speaker 2: were like, we got to change our game plan.
• 18:31
Speaker 3: Try to rev it up.
• 18:33
Speaker 1: And it's crazy how much they blow up on social media.
• 18:38
Speaker 1: For people who have never been in a sorority their
• 18:40
Speaker 1: entire life are fascinated with these professional videos and everything
• 18:45
Speaker 1: going on in the sorority world during recruitment week.
• 18:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, the dance videos, they get millions of views. And
• 18:53
Speaker 2: then my more brand film kind of focused creative videos,
• 18:59
Speaker 2: even those still get tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands
• 19:03
  Speaker 2: of views.
• 19:04
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 19:05
Speaker 1: I think what our biggest asked question on all of
• 19:09
Speaker 1: these recordings is, how are the front girls picked for
• 19:12
Speaker 1: the dance videos? Everyone wants to know how the front
• 19:16
  Speaker 1: girls are picked.
• 19:18
Speaker 2: I think it's just, can you actually dance?
• 19:21
Speaker 1: Have you ever witnessed one?
• 19:23
Speaker 2: Oh no. But like I've seen girls like get kicked off.
• 19:29
Speaker 2: Cause like they're not executing the dance, but for the
• 19:32
Speaker 2: most part, a lot of these dance girls are on
• 19:37
Speaker 2: like the, like the show girls or like the palm,
• 19:41
Speaker 2: like the dance teams of their schools or like their cheerleaders.
• 19:45
Speaker 2: So they have, enough experience to pop off.
• 19:50
Speaker 3: So are you ever filming those dance videos or TikToks
• 19:54
Speaker 3: or are you asked to film those on your professional cameras?
• 19:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, all the time. And they've gotten pretty big over
• 20:03
Speaker 2: the last few years. TC doesn't do them as much.
• 20:08
Speaker 2: It's like, I think it has to do with like
• 20:10
Speaker 2: the fact that it's not as big as like the
• 20:13
Speaker 2: SEC schools where like you don't see the volume of
• 20:17
Speaker 2: people in the back. So it just kind of doesn't
• 20:21
Speaker 2: give off that grand effect as much. So a lot
• 20:24
Speaker 2: of like my chapters that I do work with, like
• 20:27
Speaker 2: they're not keen to do that. Yeah.
• 20:30
Speaker 3: So you did say you've seen someone get booted from
• 20:34
Speaker 3: the front or from the dance. Did that ever come with?
• 20:37
Speaker 3: arguments or tears or have you ever witnessed just in
• 20:41
Speaker 3: general like those fights lead to tears i mean i'm.
• 20:46
Speaker 2: Just like focused on my job but i'm assuming that
• 20:49
Speaker 2: they're like in the back just like crying wow.
• 20:54
Speaker 1: So you haven't witnessed it gets so deep.
• 20:56
Speaker 2: It gets so like you're in it like if you're
• 20:59
Speaker 2: like 19 20 years old like this is like the
• 21:02
Speaker 2: biggest thing in your life and that moment it just
• 21:05
Speaker 2: hits you And work week is just intentionally, like, very girly.
• 21:12
Speaker 2: It is not for the week.
• 21:14
Speaker 1: It's cutthroat, honestly. Like, now removed from it, I can
• 21:20
Speaker 1: see it and be like, that was funny that I
• 21:23
Speaker 1: cared that much. But, like, being in it, it was
• 21:27
  Speaker 1: that deep.
• 21:28
Speaker 2: It is that deep.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: In the shot of the work week video or.
• 21:34
Speaker 2: Like that's the passion that you need. This is like competition.
• 21:37
Speaker 2: You want to figuratively, like you want to sweep.
• 21:41
Speaker 1: You want to sweep. You want to be viral.
• 21:44
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 21:45
Speaker 1: And you want to get the best PC. It's so important. Period.
• 21:49
Speaker 3: For those work week videos, do chapters ever ask you
• 21:53
Speaker 3: what content you're filming for another house?
• 21:57
Speaker 2: Yeah. I, I have like NDAs for that.
• 22:00
Speaker 1: So I can't like. Oh my gosh. Oh my goodness.
• 22:05
Speaker 1: That's crazy. I mean, that makes sense. You mean like
• 22:08
  Speaker 1: the themes?
• 22:09
  Speaker 2: Yeah. The themes. Yeah. I can't, I can't disclose, but
• 22:15
Speaker 2: if there are like overlapping themes, then like, I, I
• 22:18
Speaker 2: kind of hint at it like during like the meetings
• 22:21
Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, so like, let's not do this shot.
• 22:25
Speaker 1: That's good because that's like you looking out for your
• 22:28
Speaker 1: chapters because no chapter wants to have the same theme
• 22:31
  Speaker 1: as another chapter.
• 22:33
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 22:34
Speaker 2: And it happens. I think Panhellenic, most Panhellenics try to
• 22:38
Speaker 2: make sure like those days are like separated if there
• 22:41
Speaker 2: is a theme overlap.
• 22:43
Speaker 3: You're looking out for them. They just have to not
• 22:45
Speaker 3: be too hung over to catch on.
• 22:48
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 22:51
Speaker 1: Have you, I'm sure you have, but what has it
• 22:54
Speaker 1: looked like with a copycat theme situation? Or like if
• 22:58
Speaker 1: two days they have different themes, how do you like
• 23:01
Speaker 1: make one video different than the other?
• 23:04
Speaker 2: I just make sure that in the pre-production process, I
• 23:09
Speaker 2: let the girls know, like, we're going to stick to
• 23:13
Speaker 2: these ideas and we're not going to go around that.
• 23:17
Speaker 2: Like we planned this specific idea. So let's just not
• 23:23
Speaker 2: try to go too much outside of it. That way,
• 23:26
Speaker 2: like going into filming, like everyone's on the same page.
• 23:30
Speaker 2: You're like, okay, we're going to film this. We're going
• 23:32
Speaker 2: to film this. And there's a reason why he's like
• 23:37
Speaker 2: hinting towards filming this.
• 23:39
Speaker 3: Have you ever gotten feedback after sharing what you made
• 23:44
Speaker 3: that was like, let's scrap this. We want to go
• 23:47
Speaker 3: in a completely different direction.
• 23:49
Speaker 2: Not really. I think we start early enough where the
• 23:52
Speaker 2: girls have enough of a vision. Like we were planning
• 23:57
Speaker 2: these work week videos in May. So like if they
• 24:01
Speaker 2: were to have scrapped it, like, yeah, like that, conversation
• 24:04
Speaker 2: happened in June rather than August when we're out there filming. Yeah.
• 24:11
Speaker 1: So in terms of work week, can you walk us
• 24:14
Speaker 1: through like what a day for you looks like, what
• 24:17
Speaker 1: time you're starting, how many houses you're going to walk
• 24:20
Speaker 1: us through exactly what that day looks like?
• 24:23
Speaker 2: So I think I wake up at like four 45.
• 24:27
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 24:28
Speaker 2: And then I'm just making sure like I'm prepping all
• 24:32
Speaker 2: my equipment, I, like, take a really nice, long, hot shower,
• 24:37
Speaker 2: eat breakfast, and then I get to campus around 8 a.m.
• 24:44
Speaker 2: That's when I have all my assistants. This year I
• 24:46
  Speaker 2: hired three assistants.
• 24:48
Speaker 1: Wow, three assistants. Oh, my gosh.
• 24:51
Speaker 2: So they were either, like, helping out, like, second shooting,
• 24:55
Speaker 2: or they were editing, they were running cards, grabbing lunch or, like, snacks, water.
• 25:01
  Speaker 3: That's a full production.
• 25:02
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 25:03
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 25:03
  Speaker 1: Wow.
• 25:04
  Speaker 2: It was crazy.
• 25:06
Speaker 1: Was it helpful? Like, will you do three again next year?
• 25:08
Speaker 2: I think I'm not going to do this to myself
• 25:12
Speaker 2: and go crazy. Like 16, that was not healthy for me.
• 25:16
  Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
• 25:17
Speaker 2: But the technical achievement, like it was exhilarating. It was awesome.
• 25:22
Speaker 2: And we started filming at nine and we had 90
• 25:26
Speaker 2: minute time slots. So at 1030, like I would get
• 25:31
Speaker 2: the Memory cards and swap it out. And then someone's
• 25:34
Speaker 2: running with my memory cards, they're dumping, and then they're
• 25:37
Speaker 2: starting to editing process.
• 25:39
  Speaker 3: Wow.
• 25:40
Speaker 2: And then I'm walking over to the next house. So
• 25:43
Speaker 2: we start filming at 11 and then 11 to 1230
• 25:46
Speaker 2: is like the filming slot around like 1220. One of
• 25:50
Speaker 2: my assistants comes over, picks up the card. They're running back.
• 25:54
Speaker 2: They're starting to editing on that. And then 1230 to two,
• 25:59
Speaker 2: I'm just doing the same thing on repeat. And then
• 26:02
Speaker 2: my last filming slot from like two to three 30 repeat.
• 26:08
Speaker 2: We go back. I eat my late lunch. And then
• 26:12
Speaker 2: by that point, most of the videos are edited enough
• 26:16
Speaker 2: for me to like go through it. And then I'm
• 26:18
Speaker 2: just like, okay, let's, let's put some of my magic
• 26:21
Speaker 2: sauce in it. And then they fix audio color grade
• 26:26
Speaker 2: and then export. And then everyone gets their video by
• 26:28
Speaker 2: 7 PM. And that was my every day. for five. Wow.
• 26:34
  Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
• 26:35
Speaker 1: At least you're not editing late. Like I'm surprised you
• 26:37
Speaker 1: don't have to do more late night edits. Like that's good. You're,
• 26:40
Speaker 1: you're getting it to everyone by seven and then starting
• 26:42
Speaker 1: the next day. I'm guessing it had.
• 26:44
Speaker 3: To be like a well-oiled machine like that because I mean,
• 26:47
Speaker 3: you're getting told by these chapters that they want to
• 26:49
Speaker 3: post every single day. So they're making you get it
• 26:52
Speaker 3: to them by that 7 PM.
• 26:55
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 26:55
Speaker 2: And it was, it was a lot of work. It,
• 27:00
Speaker 2: Like I said, it took me three months to prep
• 27:02
Speaker 2: for that. I had to do two-hour meetings with all
• 27:07
Speaker 2: my assistants just to explain all the process. And each
• 27:11
Speaker 2: chapter that I worked with, pre-production ran upwards to 10 hours.
• 27:15
Speaker 2: So if that's five, that's anywhere from 40 to 50 hours.
• 27:18
Speaker 2: And then three assistants, six hours there. So you can
• 27:23
Speaker 2: do the math. It was crazy, just the amount of
• 27:25
Speaker 2: time that went into it. Yes.
• 27:42
Speaker 1: You've probably seen social media and these professional videos grow
• 27:46
Speaker 1: so much over the past six years. Where do you
• 27:49
Speaker 1: think it's going? What do you think is the next
• 27:51
Speaker 1: big thing that's going to show up next year during
• 27:54
Speaker 1: sorority rush? This year we saw so much branding, which
• 27:58
Speaker 1: is really interesting. Yeah.
• 28:00
Speaker 2: I actually know the guy who was a part of
• 28:03
  Speaker 2: most of that.
• 28:05
  Speaker 1: Oh, the branding.
• 28:06
Speaker 2: Yeah. So brand activations are really big right now. And sororities,
• 28:12
Speaker 2: they do get the views. These brands also have it
• 28:15
Speaker 2: in their contracts that these girls have to do these
• 28:20
Speaker 2: Rush Talk dances if they're going to get the products. Wow.
• 28:24
Speaker 3: Like certain dances or just a dance?
• 28:27
Speaker 2: Like a dance or like they could specify like certain dance.
• 28:30
Speaker 2: Like if you don't do this, like you are breaking rules.
• 28:33
  Speaker 2: our contract.
• 28:34
Speaker 3: So if you don't dance to this song and become
• 28:37
Speaker 3: the next KKG Blythe, you're not getting your poppies or whatever.
• 28:41
Speaker 2: You're just not getting your poppies. Yeah. It's crazy. Or
• 28:44
Speaker 2: like they specify like the types of videos that are
• 28:47
Speaker 2: required out of that transaction.
• 28:50
Speaker 1: And from your understanding, are these sororities getting paid for
• 28:52
Speaker 1: the brand sponsorships or are they just getting free poppies makeup?
• 28:56
Speaker 1: I think I saw like Lemmy gummies.
• 28:59
Speaker 2: I think they're getting the free products. Okay.
• 29:01
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 29:02
Speaker 2: And then, like, the middlemen organizing, like, they're the ones, like,
• 29:05
Speaker 2: getting paid. But, like, obviously, like, there's, like, thousands of sororities. Yeah.
• 29:11
Speaker 3: So are you saying that these sororities are hiring, like,
• 29:14
  Speaker 3: brand managers?
• 29:16
Speaker 2: It's more so, like, there's a gap in the market
• 29:19
Speaker 2: right now. And these people are becoming brand activators. And
• 29:26
Speaker 2: they're directly reaching out to sororities to see if they're interested.
• 29:30
Speaker 2: So they're... They're the middlemen connecting the brands to the sororities.
• 29:35
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 29:37
Speaker 2: But, yeah, that is a good point. I think, like,
• 29:41
Speaker 2: we're getting to a point where if the budgets are
• 29:45
Speaker 2: high enough like sororities might have like national sororities might
• 29:53
Speaker 2: hire like an in-house videographer that handles like their top
• 29:58
Speaker 2: houses yeah I think we're getting to a point where
• 30:02
Speaker 2: that's close and closer to a reality.
• 30:04
Speaker 1: And like monitoring the brand partnerships. Yeah. I bet there's
• 30:08
Speaker 1: a lot of rules and regulations around that.
• 30:11
Speaker 2: Yeah. There's a lot of chapters that like surprisingly aren't interested.
• 30:16
Speaker 1: Just because it's so new probably.
• 30:18
Speaker 2: Well, you got to think like the advisors are like 40,
• 30:20
Speaker 2: 50 years old. So they're like not happening. No, this
• 30:25
Speaker 2: is the same. How we represent our lady. Yeah. Yeah.
• 30:28
Speaker 1: I could still see that happening. Which makes sense because
• 30:33
Speaker 1: there's just a lot. I feel like that could go wrong.
• 30:34
Speaker 1: You just have to be careful about who you're trusting
• 30:36
Speaker 1: to make these deals with. So you said, okay, so
• 30:42
Speaker 1: we talked about brand partnerships. Is that what you think
• 30:44
Speaker 1: is going to continue to evolve? Do you think there's
• 30:46
Speaker 1: going to be any new type of video, social media
• 30:50
Speaker 1: content coming in the next couple years?
• 30:52
Speaker 2: I like to think that people are hungry now for
• 30:57
Speaker 2: this niche. Yeah. Yeah. It's just, there's, yeah, you're right.
• 31:02
Speaker 2: Like there's just going to be new formats that pop
• 31:05
Speaker 2: up here and there. Like I think people are going
• 31:07
Speaker 2: to keep trying new things and then things are going
• 31:11
Speaker 2: to become like a trend. And then I can't predict
• 31:14
Speaker 2: any of those, but if it happens, you got to
• 31:18
Speaker 2: jump on it quick. Yeah.
• 31:20
Speaker 1: And it seems like you're always willing to be the
• 31:22
Speaker 1: first to try it and jump on it and be
• 31:25
Speaker 1: open to any new idea.
• 31:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, like the work week videos, like at TCU, like
• 31:30
Speaker 2: before that was a thing, like I was on that.
• 31:34
Speaker 1: You were. And those that you're talking about, are they
• 31:37
  Speaker 1: like more like montage-y? I don't know if that's the
• 31:40
Speaker 1: right word, but more like clips of like them doing
• 31:42
Speaker 1: stuff during their themed day. But then you also now
• 31:45
Speaker 1: have the dance videos that are like to a song.
• 31:48
Speaker 1: And those are also now professionally recorded, which is crazy.
• 31:52
Speaker 2: Those are the easiest though. Yeah. Like usually one take. Yeah.
• 31:56
Speaker 1: If they're good. Yeah.
• 31:58
  Speaker 2: If they're good.
• 31:59
Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh my gosh. So crazy. So to end it
• 32:03
Speaker 1: on like a positive note, what would you say is
• 32:05
Speaker 1: like your favorite thing about your job?
• 32:08
Speaker 2: I actually do like make friends with like these recruitment chairs. Yeah.
• 32:13
Speaker 2: Or just, yeah. Like last, like two weeks ago, like
• 32:20
Speaker 2: I took one of the recruitment chairs out to dinner
• 32:23
Speaker 2: and I bought her dinner. And we got to just
• 32:25
Speaker 2: like chat about life and what she wants to do,
• 32:28
Speaker 2: like moving forward after graduating. And then like, sometimes like
• 32:33
Speaker 2: I visit my like former recruitment chairs, like a couple
• 32:37
Speaker 2: of years ago, I went to New York because she
• 32:39
Speaker 2: lives in New York right now. And we got to
• 32:42
Speaker 2: hang out. So whenever like those relationships do happen, like
• 32:47
Speaker 2: it truly does make this job so meaningful, even like
• 32:51
Speaker 2: despite the drama, like, the few good really outweigh all
• 32:55
  Speaker 2: the bad. Yeah.
• 32:57
Speaker 3: That human connection is always helpful, especially in how draining
• 33:02
Speaker 3: the days can be. And I know it's even from
• 33:05
Speaker 3: your side, it's probably more draining than it was because
• 33:08
Speaker 3: I was in a sorority too. And those were long days,
• 33:11
Speaker 3: but for you, it seems like it might've been even longer.
• 33:14
Speaker 3: So you need to have an outlet or a human
• 33:17
Speaker 3: connection to make that worthwhile.
• 33:20
Speaker 2: Yeah. Like some of these stories, like I, I log
• 33:24
Speaker 2: my hours and I look back and I'm like, Ooh,
• 33:26
Speaker 2: I spent way too much time on that, but it's
• 33:29
Speaker 2: really worth it. Like some of these stories I spent
• 33:31
Speaker 2: like 300 hours a year with them.
• 33:34
  Speaker 1: Wow.
• 33:35
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 33:36
Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Crazy. So upcoming, are you doing any, um,
• 33:41
Speaker 1: winter rush or second semester rush videos?
• 33:44
Speaker 2: Um, not really. I just haven't really done any of
• 33:48
Speaker 2: those like in the past couple of years. It was
• 33:51
