- 0:00Speaker 1: One, two, three.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Taylor Reid.
- 0:02Speaker 3: Cuesta.
- 0:04Speaker 4: Yes.
- 0:05Speaker 5: Yes.
- 0:08Speaker 6: Cuesta by Victor Bumbalow. Fade in. Black postcard. It reads 1991. Exterior,
- 0:16Speaker 6: New York City, Chelsea.
- 0:17Speaker 7: Evening.
- 0:18Speaker 6: A quiet residential area. Brownstones and small apartment buildings. It's
- 0:23Speaker 6: an hour after the rain. The street, fairly deserted, is
- 0:27Speaker 6: glistening with colored lights reflecting off it. For a second,
- 0:31Speaker 6: the street sparkles with a make-believe look to it. This
- 0:34Speaker 6: image is interrupted as Paul turns the corner. He is attractive, thin,
- 0:39Speaker 6: and in his early 30s. He is running, scared. He
- 0:43Speaker 6: instantly slows down when he sees a woman coming down
- 0:45Speaker 6: the block toward him. He crosses the street, trying to
- 0:48Speaker 6: control his heavy breathing. Paul and the woman pass each
- 0:52Speaker 6: other on opposite sides of the street. When he is
- 0:54Speaker 6: sure she can no longer see him and no one
- 0:56Speaker 6: else is on the street... He rips off his baseball-like jacket,
- 1:00Speaker 6: wipes his shirt with it, and buries it in a
- 1:02Speaker 6: street corner garbage bin that is already filled. He cleans
- 1:06Speaker 6: his dirty hands on his jeans. A car turns a corner.
- 1:10Speaker 6: Paul shies away from it. He then turns another corner
- 1:13Speaker 6: onto a heavily trafficked street and picks up his pace.
- 1:17Speaker 6: Exterior street continuous. Paul passes a store window and sees
- 1:21Speaker 6: his reflection. His face and shirt have blood on them.
- 1:25Speaker 6: He stares at himself. Dissolve to exterior, head of a
- 1:30Speaker 6: young man, same time. The young man is perhaps 21.
- 1:34Speaker 6: Some blood drips from his mouth. His head lies in
- 1:37Speaker 6: a pool of blood coming from the back of his skull.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Red.
- 1:42Speaker 6: Such a vivid red, in contrast to the pale face
- 1:45Speaker 6: and the dark concrete. The face is attractive. The face
- 1:49Speaker 6: of an all-American boy. The eyes are still open, startled.
- 1:54Speaker 6: two old and worn shoes step into the frame. Cut
- 2:00Speaker 6: to exterior street a moment later. Paul is running. Exterior,
- 2:05Speaker 6: a deserted alley a second later. Daniel, early 40s, is
- 2:10Speaker 6: staring at the body. He is a black street person, very,
- 2:14Speaker 6: very thin. Daniel is effeminate when he wants to be
- 2:18Speaker 6: and ever so butch when he needs to be. The
- 2:21Speaker 6: real Daniel disappeared years ago.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Don't touch anything.
- 2:26Speaker 6: He slowly backs away from the body. Exterior, in front
- 2:30Speaker 6: of Trucking, a gay bar in the village, moments later.
- 2:33Speaker 6: A few people in front of the bar watch Daniel
- 2:36Speaker 6: as he walks into Trucking. Interior Trucking, continuous. Daniel enters
- 2:40Speaker 6: the bar. It is the weekend, so it's fairly crowded. Immediately,
- 2:45Speaker 6: a bartender comes over to Daniel.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Somebody just got killed in the alley, and I saw
- 2:51Speaker 1: who did it.
- 2:51Speaker 6: That grabs the customer's attention. Word spreads. Some laugh, like
- 2:56Speaker 6: it might be a joke. Some folks leave, maybe to
- 2:58Speaker 6: take a look. Some just study Daniel.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Shouldn't someone call 911?
- 3:03Speaker 6: The bartender just stands there.
- 3:05Speaker 1: If you won't prove, go look for yourself.
- 3:07Speaker 6: The bartender backs away from Daniel to do just that.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Exterior Chelsea, a little later. Paul is hurrying down another street,
- 3:15Speaker 6: trying to be invisible to a passerby. He turns a
- 3:18Speaker 6: corner and runs up the steps of a brownstone and
- 3:21Speaker 6: rings the intercom. The intercom answers.
- 3:24Speaker 8: It's me. Are you alone?
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:27Speaker 9: Why?
- 3:29Speaker 6: Interior, one-bedroom apartment in the Brownstone building, moments later. Susan, mid-twenties,
- 3:34Speaker 6: whose open-heartedness can be intimidating, goes to answer the door.
- 3:39Speaker 6: As soon as she opens the door, Paul pushes past
- 3:41Speaker 6: her and starts ripping off his clothes.
- 3:44Speaker 2: What the hell?
- 3:44Speaker 6: Paul is half out of his mind, hyper and desperate.
- 3:48Speaker 6: His speech is rapid and disjointed.
- 3:50Speaker 8: We've got to get rid of these.
- 3:51Speaker 10: What happened?
- 3:53Speaker 8: Give me something to wear. No, I better shower first.
- 3:58Speaker 8: When will Nicholas be back?
- 3:59Speaker 2: In a few minutes.
- 4:00Speaker 8: I don't want him to see this. Get me a
- 4:04Speaker 8: plastic bag.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Susan runs out of the room to get a plastic
- 4:07Speaker 6: bag for his clothes.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Then a drink.
- 4:10Speaker 8: I need a drink.
- 4:11Speaker 2: You shouldn't.
- 4:12Speaker 8: I need one.
- 4:14Speaker 6: Susan comes into the room with the plastic bag. Paul
- 4:17Speaker 6: grabs it out of her hands and starts throwing his
- 4:19Speaker 6: bloodied clothes into it.
- 4:21Speaker 2: What happened? The drink.
- 4:22Speaker 6: Paul is now down to his underwear. He checks his
- 4:25Speaker 6: body for blood. Susan goes to a cabinet and pours
- 4:28Speaker 6: Paul a drink.
- 4:30Speaker 8: I think he's dead. Who? The man in the alley.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Oh, Jesus fucking Christ.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Paul grabs the drink out of Susan's hand and gulps it.
- 4:39Speaker 6: He keeps aimlessly moving around the room.
- 4:42Speaker 2: What alley?
- 4:43Speaker 8: I didn't mean it. You believe me, don't you?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Paul, what are you talking about?
- 4:53Speaker 8: I killed him. What? I could have stopped, but I didn't.
- 5:01Speaker 8: I kept hitting, banging his head.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Susan, in shock, is just staring at Paul.
- 5:08Speaker 8: We were in the alley near trucking. Sex sometimes goes
- 5:12Speaker 8: on there. Don't look at me like that. It's the
- 5:16Speaker 8: only kind of sex I can handle these days. He
- 5:20Speaker 8: was younger than me. Bigger.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Drunk.
- 5:24Speaker 8: He was finishing peeing. I looked at him and he smiled.
- 5:29Speaker 8: He started calling me names. Then he started hitting me.
- 5:32Speaker 10: Hard.
- 5:34Speaker 8: Somehow I tripped him or he tripped. There was blood
- 5:38Speaker 8: coming from his head. He must have fallen on a
- 5:41Speaker 8: rock or something. And I jumped on him. And I
- 5:46Speaker 8: grabbed him by the shoulders and kept banging him. Then
- 5:50Speaker 8: somebody came towards us and I ran.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Maybe he's still alive.
- 5:56Speaker 1: He's not.
- 5:58Speaker 2: We've got to call the police now. It was an accident. Self-defense.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Susan quickly goes over to the phone and picks it up.
- 6:05Speaker 8: Did you hear me? I kept banging his head.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Susan looks at Paul's pleading body and puts down the phone.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Interior shower. Minutes later, Paul is scrubbing his skin violently.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Interior Susan's living room, a moment later. Susan's husband, Nicholas,
- 6:22Speaker 6: comes into the room with a grocery bag. He's an
- 6:25Speaker 6: early 30s New Yorker man on the move.
- 6:28Speaker 3: One grocery store and two delis later. Natural cashews.
- 6:32Speaker 6: He looks over to his upset wife.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Hey, what's the matter?
- 6:38Speaker 10: It's my brother.
- 6:38Speaker 2: He's in the shower.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Why is he in our shower?
- 6:43Speaker 6: Exterior, street in front of trucking, same time. The scene
- 6:47Speaker 6: is lit from the lights of cop cars and an ambulance.
- 6:50Speaker 6: The young man is now in a body bag. He's
- 6:52Speaker 6: being placed in the ambulance. Daniel, holding court, is with
- 6:56Speaker 6: detectives and some onlookers. Interior, Susan's living room, moments later.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Susan is with her husband. Paul comes into the room
- 7:04Speaker 6: and looks at them.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Paul, this is serious.
- 7:08Speaker 8: You told him?
- 7:09Speaker 3: That you got hit drunk and got sick all over yourself?
- 7:12Speaker 6: Paul is relieved that his sister has lied. They exchange
- 7:15Speaker 6: a look.
- 7:17Speaker 8: I'll bring your clothes back tomorrow.
- 7:20Speaker 3: You told us you weren't drinking anymore. You said AA
- 7:25Speaker 3: was working for you.
- 7:27Speaker 6: Interior Police Station, night. Detective Ralph Salvadori, a 45-year-old with
- 7:33Speaker 6: a weight problem, and his younger partner, Detective Bernadette Kronick,
- 7:37Speaker 6: are with Daniel, who is enjoying a cup of coffee
- 7:39Speaker 6: and a donut. Daniel is giving instructions to the sketch artist, Jason.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Are you being cooperative tonight? It's a kinder, gentler me.
- 7:48Speaker 11: What were you doing back there?
- 7:50Speaker 4: Pee.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's my pissoir.
- 7:53Speaker 12: Anyway, the two boys were fighting. I thought I'd better
- 7:56Speaker 12: take a look. What a good citizen I am. His
- 8:00Speaker 12: nose is whiter.
- 8:02Speaker 6: The sketch looks nothing like Paul. In fact, it looks
- 8:05Speaker 6: more like the dead young man.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Do you think I could have another donut? Maybe a cigarette?
- 8:12Speaker 1: He had thicker, blonder hair. Straight.
- 8:15Speaker 6: Paul's hair is not blonde. Chronic hands Daniel a donut.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Many, many thanks, darling. What a cute little body you have.
- 8:24Speaker 6: Interior, Susan's bedroom, later that night. Susan and Nicholas are
- 8:28Speaker 6: getting ready for bed. Susan looks out of it.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Your brother's using Kevin as an excuse to drink. He's
- 8:35Speaker 3: playing the widower again.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Let's just go to bed.
- 8:39Speaker 3: It's been two years since Kevin died.
- 8:42Speaker 2: You have some compassion.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Kevin was my best friend. I lost someone, too.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I know.
- 8:49Speaker 6: Susan goes into the bathroom to get away from her husband.
- 8:53Speaker 6: Interior bathroom continuous. Susan closes the door and tries to
- 8:57Speaker 6: control her shaking. Dissolved to interior Paul's studio apartment that night. Paul,
- 9:04Speaker 6: looking like a frightened child, is sitting up in bed
- 9:07Speaker 6: in his darkened apartment. He is dazed and clutching his pillow. Interior,
- 9:12Speaker 6: close-up of Lori's face a few days later. Lori is
- 9:16Speaker 6: a sensual-looking woman in her early to mid-forties. She looks
- 9:20Speaker 6: tired and appears almost drugged. She is staring at something.
- 9:24Speaker 6: Dissolved to Interior St. Anthony's Church a second later. Lori,
- 9:29Speaker 6: wearing black, is staring at the coffin holding her son.
- 9:33Speaker 6: It is in the aisle next to her. Near the
- 9:36Speaker 6: coffin is a smiling picture of a young man. It
- 9:39Speaker 6: is the dead boy from the alley. the muffled sounds
- 9:42Speaker 6: of the mass ending, and the organ playing are heard.
- 9:46Speaker 6: Next to Lori are her sister, her brother-in-law, and her
- 9:49Speaker 6: uncomfortable teenage nephew. Father Dunn, in his late 70s, is
- 9:53Speaker 6: blessing the coffin. He is assisted by Father James, a
- 9:56Speaker 6: younger priest in his 40s. Father Dunn and Father James
- 10:00Speaker 6: lead the coffin, wheeled by the pallbearers, down the aisle
- 10:03Speaker 6: to the church's exit. Lori and her family take their
- 10:07Speaker 6: place behind the coffin. The rest of the people file
- 10:10Speaker 6: behind the family. It's a very small group of mourners. Interior,
- 10:14Speaker 6: Lori's kitchen, late that evening. Lori is wandering around the
- 10:18Speaker 6: room aimlessly. Father James sits at her kitchen table in
- 10:22Speaker 6: a t-shirt and pants. He exudes too much sexuality for
- 10:27Speaker 6: a priest.
- 10:28Speaker 9: Father Dunn's eulogy was ridiculous. It has nothing of will
- 10:31Speaker 9: in it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I should have done it. I'm sorry.
- 10:35Speaker 13: Oh, and his idea of angels, it.
- 10:37Speaker 14: Father Dunn's spirituality has a touch of Disney to it.
- 10:41Speaker 13: How the hell did those people get my number?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Your name was in the paper?
- 10:46Speaker 9: They called it another gay bashing. I told them they
- 10:49Speaker 9: won't be calling here again. My son was not one
- 10:53Speaker 9: of them. He wasn't gay. You know that.
- 10:58Speaker 13: But I think some of the police think he was.
- 11:00Speaker 1: No, they don't.
- 11:02Speaker 15: The way his car was parked, the witness said he
- 11:06Speaker 15: was just back there peeing.
- 11:08Speaker 13: Gay, my ass. How we would laugh whenever I made
- 11:11Speaker 13: fun of my boss, Richard.
- 11:13Speaker 1: You gotta get some sleep.
- 11:17Speaker 13: Why did God do this to me?
- 11:19Speaker 8: Was it because of us?
- 11:22Speaker 1: I doubt it.
- 11:26Speaker 13: Can you stay all night?
- 11:29Speaker 1: You know I can't do that. But I'll stay a while.
- 11:35Speaker 9: Your collar is very selective in what kind of comfort
- 11:38Speaker 9: it can give.
- 11:41Speaker 6: Exterior, Chelsea Street, Day. Celia, a white drag queen whose
- 11:45Speaker 6: name is Carl when he's not in drag, is sitting
- 11:48Speaker 6: on a stoop. Next to him is Daniel. They are
- 11:51Speaker 6: sharing a sandwich, watching the traffic, and giving the once-over
- 11:55Speaker 6: to the various nannies wheeling their white babies.
- 11:59Speaker 10: If I was the witness, I'd at least gotten myself
- 12:02Speaker 10: on television.
- 12:03Speaker 1: As what? The ugliest bitch around?
- 12:06Speaker 10: As the cutest boy there ever was.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You were that once, darling.
- 12:11Speaker 10: But I preferred a dress.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Hmm. I lied.
- 12:16Speaker 12: My murderer looked nothing like the description I gave.
- 12:19Speaker 10: I saw the flyers. He looks like Brad Pitt.
- 12:23Speaker 1: You got it. That's who I was describing. I love
- 12:28Speaker 1: that little white boy.
- 12:29Speaker 5: I'm over him.
- 12:31Speaker 10: I'm on to the Johnny Deep.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Dab?
- 12:34Speaker 10: Whatever.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You got no loyalty. It's a severe character flaw.
- 12:39Speaker 10: Why'd you lie?
- 12:41Speaker 1: I had my reasons.
- 12:42Speaker 10: He give you money?
- 12:43Speaker 4: No.
- 12:44Speaker 13: Who do you think I am, a criminal?
- 12:46Speaker 6: Celia is watching a couple of nannies wheeling their babies.
- 12:49Speaker 10: It's an explosion of babies.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Everybody's getting them these days. Old people, gay people, lesbian people.
- 12:59Speaker 6: Interior Paul's studio apartment day. Paul sits on a high
- 13:03Speaker 6: stool near his kitchen counter. He is as disheveled as
- 13:06Speaker 6: his apartment is. The room is fairly large. One can
- 13:10Speaker 6: see what an attractive space this once was, or could
- 13:13Speaker 6: be again. Susan is straightening up the room.
- 13:17Speaker 8: You don't have to do this.
- 13:18Speaker 6: Susan's not paying attention to him.
- 13:22Speaker 8: Why do you think he did it?
- 13:24Speaker 9: Who?
- 13:25Speaker 8: The witness. His description. You've seen the flyers. They look
- 13:28Speaker 8: nothing like me. Maybe he's going to blackmail me.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Maybe he wasn't a witness. Just somebody who's looking for attention.
- 13:36Speaker 8: Maybe I should just go to the police.
- 13:39Speaker 10: No.
- 13:39Speaker 7: No.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It might be too late for that.
- 13:43Speaker 12: The mother.
- 13:46Speaker 8: I read he's a hairdresser in the village. But the
- 13:48Speaker 8: funeral's in Jersey at St.
- 13:50Speaker 7: Anthony's.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Please, please stop it.
- 13:52Speaker 8: I can't. I've been thinking. Thinking. It's a blur to me.
- 13:57Speaker 8: I was in such a rage. I need to know
- 13:59Speaker 8: if he was dead when I jumped on him. What
- 14:03Speaker 8: the hell difference would that make?
- 14:05Speaker 2: It was self-defense.
- 14:07Speaker 8: But I kept pounding.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Silence. Susan sits down, holding in her tears.
- 14:14Speaker 8: I should have gone right home after it happened. I
- 14:16Speaker 8: should have never told you.
- 14:19Speaker 4: You had to. We never kept secrets from each other.
- 14:23Speaker 4: All we have is each other.
- 14:26Speaker 8: You have Nicholas now.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I know, but I can't help it.
- 14:29Speaker 4: I need you more. Remember all those dreams we had
- 14:35Speaker 4: after Mommy and Daddy died?
- 14:38Speaker 2: They were always so similar.
- 14:40Speaker 4: When we used to tell them to each other... some
- 14:44Speaker 4: of our loneliness would disappear, remember? Let's... Let's pretend we
- 14:49Speaker 4: both had a similar nightmare.
- 14:51Speaker 13: That this was.
- 14:51Speaker 4: That what this was was just a nightmare.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Paul sits at the edge of his bed, holding his head.
- 14:59Speaker 6: The phone starts ringing. The machine kicks in.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Hi, it's me.
- 15:03Speaker 8: Shit, get it.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Susan, who is nearer to the phone, gets it. Paul
- 15:07Speaker 6: stands up and tries to get himself together.
- 15:09Speaker 10: Hello?
- 15:10Speaker 9: Hello?
- 15:11Speaker 10: Hey, it's Ron.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Oh, hi, Ron. How have you been?
- 15:14Speaker 1: I'm good. It's my birthday.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Well, happy birthday to you.
- 15:20Speaker 15: Thank you.
- 15:21Speaker 8: Tell him I'm dressing.
- 15:22Speaker 2: He's dressing. He's dressing. I heard that the restaurant is great.
- 15:27Speaker 10: Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Things are going good.
- 15:30Speaker 6: Paul goes over to get the phone from Susan.
- 15:32Speaker 8: Sorry I'm running late.
- 15:34Speaker 1: That's all right. Just get here when you can.
- 15:37Speaker 10: All right.
- 15:37Speaker 4: All right.
- 15:38Speaker 8: I'll meet you there. Let me go. I'll see you
- 15:40Speaker 8: in a few.
- 15:41Speaker 6: He hangs up.
- 15:43Speaker 2: You are not in shape to go to a birthday party.
- 15:45Speaker 8: I have to. Bradley's going to be there. He just
- 15:48Speaker 8: got out of the hospital and I have to talk
- 15:50Speaker 8: to him. It's important.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Paul starts rushing, looking for something to wear.
- 15:54Speaker 8: Please don't worry about me, okay? I'll figure something out.
- 15:58Speaker 8: But I have to see Bradley. I do. I just
- 16:03Speaker 8: wish it wasn't such a blur. Why can't I see it?
- 16:07Speaker 6: Interior, an upscale Tribeca restaurant, evening. Ten gay men of
- 16:11Speaker 6: various ethnic origins are seated at a table. Eight of
- 16:15Speaker 6: them seem to be having a good time. The group
- 16:17Speaker 6: includes Ron, who is in his 30s and seems to
- 16:20Speaker 6: be its leader. Paul is sitting next to Bradley, who
- 16:23Speaker 6: obviously has AIDS, given the lesions on his face. They
- 16:26Speaker 6: are out of sync with the rest of their friends,
- 16:29Speaker 6: having a serious conversation. They get up and head for
- 16:32Speaker 6: the men's room. The other men notice, pause for an instant,
- 16:35Speaker 6: Then resume their conversations. A man at the next table
- 16:39Speaker 6: has been staring at Bradley. Paul and Bradley enter the
- 16:42Speaker 6: men's room. Interior men's room continuous.
- 16:46Speaker 8: I'm sorry. I just couldn't walk into a hospital again.
- 16:49Speaker 4: I know.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I shouldn't have been mad at you.
- 16:52Speaker 5: But I felt like shit and I was bored.
- 16:55Speaker 14: And I thought we could distract ourselves by talking about
- 16:57Speaker 14: old movies. Our gang would know the difference between Joan
- 17:00Speaker 14: Crawford and Golda Meir.
- 17:04Speaker 8: I didn't want to see you there.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Well, after Kevin died, you volunteered at GM's... At the YMCA?
- 17:11Speaker 10: Okay.
- 17:12Speaker 14: After Kevin died, you volunteered at GM's... I.
- 17:17Speaker 8: Don't want to say that motherfucking H!
- 17:19Speaker 1: All right. What was the thing that you had trouble
- 17:22Speaker 1: with last night? Stanima.
- 17:24Speaker 10: Stanima.
- 17:27Speaker 2: He's got great stanima.
- 17:31Speaker 14: After Kevin died, you volunteered at GMHC. You were in
- 17:34Speaker 14: the hospital all the time taking care of people. I
- 17:37Speaker 14: thought it was so great given what you've been through.
- 17:39Speaker 8: That great guy is gone.
- 17:41Speaker 1: No, he's not. He's standing right in front of me.
- 17:45Speaker 10: But....
- 17:47Speaker 14: I'm not the last person you love who's going to
- 17:49Speaker 14: be in the hospital with.
- 17:50Speaker 1: This fucking disease. You do love me.
- 17:55Speaker 10: Maybe.
- 17:58Speaker 13: I should be more understanding.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I really am.
- 18:03Speaker 8: No, no... I should have been there for you. I'm
- 18:07Speaker 8: the one who's sorry.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Are we in competition?
- 18:12Speaker 8: Of course.
- 18:13Speaker 6: They look at each other and instantly hug. There's a
- 18:16Speaker 6: knock on the door.
- 18:18Speaker 1: We'll be right out.
- 18:19Speaker 6: Bradley opens the door. The guy races in, really having
- 18:22Speaker 6: to go.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Do I know you?
- 18:23Speaker 12: No.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Well, you've been staring at me all night.
- 18:38Speaker 7: I'm Bradley.
- 18:39Speaker 6: All Bradley's friends are watching. The man turns away from Bradley.
- 18:43Speaker 6: The woman at the table bends her head.
- 18:45Speaker 1: You people aren't very friendly.
- 18:47Speaker 6: Paul proudly watches Bradley as some of the guys at
- 18:50Speaker 6: their table begin laughing. The man raises his hand.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Check.
- 18:54Speaker 6: Interior, Richard's Beauty Salon, the next day. It's the last
- 18:58Speaker 6: holdout in the village. An old-fashioned beauty salon in an
- 19:01Speaker 6: area that is getting trendier. It's a favorite of local people.
- 19:05Speaker 6: A mixed crowd. Richard is the owner. He's a well-put-together
- 19:09Speaker 6: gay man in his mid-40s. Shy and soft-spoken, he is
- 19:13Speaker 6: a kind-hearted survivor. Lori is one of his employees. His
- 19:17Speaker 6: other employee is Beth, a purple-haired girl in her 20s.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Lori is cleaning her station.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I went to the demonstration the other night.
- 19:26Speaker 6: It's ridiculous.
- 19:27Speaker 13: My son was not gay.
- 19:29Speaker 5: But the killer thought he was.
- 19:33Speaker 13: Let's not talk about it.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I'll leave you alone.
- 19:36Speaker 13: I didn't say I want to be left alone, Richard.
- 19:37Speaker 8: I just don't want to talk about my son.
- 19:39Speaker 10: I'm sorry.
- 19:41Speaker 6: On Richard, not knowing what to say next.
- 19:44Speaker 13: Just distract me, okay?
- 19:48Speaker 5: I went to the club this weekend. The boys were
- 19:51Speaker 5: so young. I thought I was the oldest guy there.
- 19:55Speaker 5: You're either invisible to them or they resent you for
- 19:57Speaker 5: taking up space. I'm at a loss. I don't know
- 20:00Speaker 5: what I should do. Any ideas?
- 20:02Speaker 6: Laurie has not been paying attention to him.
- 20:05Speaker 13: There's my next customer.
- 20:07Speaker 6: She leaves Richard, who's feeling helpless. Interior stairway to Paul's apartment,
- 20:12Speaker 6: early evening. Paul is carrying a bag of groceries up
- 20:15Speaker 6: the stairs. In front of him, also climbing the stairs,
- 20:18Speaker 6: is Mrs. Marente, a woman in her mid-70s.
- 20:21Speaker 11: Damn that elevator. Honey, you look tired.
- 20:27Speaker 8: Haven't been sleeping well lately. Me either.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Miss my Tony so much.
- 20:32Speaker 13: I know.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Well, I know you know, darling. It's a bitch being alone.
- 20:39Speaker 7: But I've got my daughter, you've got your sister, your friends.
- 20:45Speaker 3: We're lucky.
- 20:47Speaker 11: So they say.
- 20:49Speaker 8: So they say.
- 20:51Speaker 6: They smile at each other. They are now standing in
- 20:53Speaker 6: front of Mrs. Marente's apartment door.
- 20:55Speaker 9: Mrs.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Marente opens her door.
- 20:57Speaker 11: Give her here.
- 20:58Speaker 8: Mrs.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Marente takes her grocery bag.
- 21:01Speaker 11: What would I do without you?
- 21:02Speaker 6: She kisses Paul on the cheek.
- 21:05Speaker 11: Come in for a cup of coffee.
- 21:07Speaker 8: I'm just going to crash.
- 21:10Speaker 7: You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to
- 21:12Speaker 7: make you some of those almond paste cookies that you
- 21:15Speaker 7: and Kevin like so much.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Knock on my door later.
- 21:18Speaker 11: I'll have some for you.
- 21:19Speaker 8: That would be great.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Tony could take a little.
- 21:23Speaker 11: He didn't have a sweet tooth.
- 21:26Speaker 8: But I do.
- 21:27Speaker 11: I know, darling.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Interior. Basement of a church.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Evening.
- 21:31Speaker 6: The homeless in the area are being fed. Three long
- 21:34Speaker 6: tables are set up. About 12 people are eating. The
- 21:38Speaker 6: food looks like the worst kind of cafeteria food. Daniel
- 21:42Speaker 6: and Celia are being served. After they get their food,
- 21:45Speaker 6: they head to an empty table.
- 21:46Speaker 10: You like my new shoes?
- 21:48Speaker 1: Where'd you get them?
- 21:48Speaker 10: Robbed them off a cunt and called me a name.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Pretty.
- 21:52Speaker 6: They sit.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I have a confession to make.
- 21:56Speaker 10: You want to do drag?
- 21:57Speaker 12: Never. I seen my little killer before. In that alley?
- 22:04Speaker 12: He's the kind of man I've always been a sucker for.
- 22:06Speaker 12: You know, The quiet, polite type. He used to smile
- 22:10Speaker 12: at me when I said hello. I offered myself to
- 22:14Speaker 12: him a couple times.
- 22:15Speaker 10: Surprise, surprise.
- 22:17Speaker 1: He said, no thank you. Real polite, though. I followed
- 22:23Speaker 1: him home once.
- 22:25Speaker 10: Girlfriend, you've got to get some help.
- 22:27Speaker 12: I've followed boys home before. It's just curiosity. I want
- 22:31Speaker 12: to know something about their lives away from the alley.
- 22:35Speaker 12: I don't know his name yet.
- 22:37Speaker 1: But I'll find out.
- 22:38Speaker 10: I don't want to hear any more about him. I
- 22:42Speaker 10: don't want to be one of those accessories.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I bet he thinks about Will, the dead boy, all
- 22:49Speaker 1: the time.
- 22:49Speaker 10: Are you going deaf? What did I just say?
- 22:52Speaker 1: I'm just making conversation.
- 22:54Speaker 10: I wish they could find a goody-goody who could cook.
- 22:58Speaker 6: Celia looks over to the smiling, kind-hearted, overweight woman who
- 23:02Speaker 6: stands behind the serving table. She is obviously the cook.
- 23:05Speaker 6: The woman catches Celia looking at her and smiles. Celia
- 23:08Speaker 6: smiles back.
- 23:10Speaker 10: Better yet, a fussy fag.
- 23:13Speaker 1: It's fuel, baby. Just fuel.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Exterior. A street in front of a library in Working
- 23:19Speaker 6: Class Queens.
- 23:20Speaker 10: Morning.
- 23:21Speaker 6: It's a bright, clear day. People on the street seem
- 23:23Speaker 6: to be enjoying it. Interior. Queensborough Hill Library. A moment later.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Paul is picking books out from a shelf and putting
- 23:31Speaker 6: them on a cart. Joan Ziff, the head librarian and
- 23:34Speaker 6: Paul's boss, approaches him. She is a thin woman in
- 23:37Speaker 6: her early 60s, warm-hearted and motherly.
- 23:40Speaker 11: Okay, kiddo, what's going on?
- 23:43Speaker 10: Nothing.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Are you mad at me?
- 23:46Speaker 8: Of course not. It's just that I've been sad lately.
- 23:50Speaker 8: Another friend of mine is back in the hospital.
- 23:53Speaker 11: Let's sneak out and get lunch together.
- 23:56Speaker 6: Interior restaurant, lunchtime. Joan is sipping a glass of wine.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Paul sits across from her.
- 24:01Speaker 11: I'm sorry about your friend.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I don't know how you guys do it.
- 24:04Speaker 13: I don't know how you do it.
- 24:06Speaker 8: Don't make me out to be a hero, because I'm not.
- 24:08Speaker 11: Well, excuse me.
- 24:10Speaker 8: I'm sorry, I'm not myself. I shouldn't be around people
- 24:14Speaker 8: right now.
- 24:15Speaker 11: You want to talk about it?
- 24:17Speaker 8: Not right now, but I do have a favor to ask.
- 24:21Speaker 11: Anything, darling.
- 24:23Speaker 8: You might take away that anything after I ask it.
- 24:26Speaker 5: We'll see.
- 24:27Speaker 8: I have some time coming. I'd like a few days off.
- 24:32Speaker 11: You're going to leave me alone with Bill and Charlotte?
- 24:36Speaker 8: I know it's a lot to ask, but I just
- 24:39Speaker 8: need some time to get myself together. I really, really do.
- 24:44Speaker 11: Okay.
- 24:45Speaker 6: Joan takes another sip of her wine.
- 24:48Speaker 11: I'm sorry, I'm having wine.
- 24:49Speaker 8: Oh, that doesn't bother me at all. And I'm about
- 24:53Speaker 8: to eat flesh. How long have you been a vegetarian?
- 24:56Speaker 11: Oh, about ten years now.
- 24:59Speaker 8: I wonder what it was like to eat in a
- 25:00Speaker 8: restaurant in the old days.
- 25:03Speaker 11: If you're expecting me to answer... I'll belt you.
- 25:08Speaker 8: You know what I mean. When not every other person
- 25:12Speaker 8: was in a program. When nobody knew what the hell
- 25:15Speaker 8: cholesterol was.
- 25:16Speaker 6: It was easier.
- 25:18Speaker 11: But I'm sure they died earlier.
- 25:23Speaker 8: So it's for health reasons.
- 25:25Speaker 11: And spiritual.
- 25:27Speaker 8: Tell me about that.
- 25:30Speaker 13: Not when we're about to eat.
- 25:31Speaker 8: Please, it won't bother me.
- 25:33Speaker 10: Well, I.
- 25:35Speaker 11: I read somewhere that when you eat flesh....
- 25:40Speaker 13: Not now.
- 25:41Speaker 8: That in your next life you become the animal?
- 25:43Speaker 10: No.
- 25:44Speaker 7: That you digest the fear and horror the animal experienced
- 25:49Speaker 7: at the moment of its death.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Paul takes a moment to take that in, then suddenly
- 25:55Speaker 6: gets up.
- 25:56Speaker 11: Where are you going?
- 25:57Speaker 8: To change my order. A salad. That's what I'll have.
- 26:01Speaker 8: It'll be good deed for the day. I need to
- 26:03Speaker 8: do good.
- 26:04Speaker 6: Joan, worried, watches Paul as he looks for the waiter.
- 26:08Speaker 6: Interior hallway evening. Lori is getting out of the elevator
- 26:12Speaker 6: and heading for her apartment. She opens the door. Interior,
- 26:15Speaker 6: Lori's kitchen, continuous. Father James, not in his priest gear,
- 26:19Speaker 6: is in her kitchen cooking supper. Lori's surprised to see him.
- 26:23Speaker 10: Well, hello. I got here an hour ago.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I thought I'd surprise you with supper.
- 26:31Speaker 3: I'm counseling a couple tonight, so I have I have
- 26:34Speaker 3: to leave early.
- 26:36Speaker 8: Sweet kids.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I'm marrying them next week. It's great that you.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Live in this building.
- 26:43Speaker 5: Why?
- 26:44Speaker 1: Well, they're mostly Jewish. They have no idea who I am.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Lori removes her shoes.
- 26:51Speaker 13: Lucky us.
- 26:53Speaker 1: You look tired.
- 26:55Speaker 13: Can't sleep. Maybe I should see a doctor. Get some pills.
- 27:01Speaker 1: That wouldn't be a bad idea.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Lori notices Father James' gym bag.
- 27:05Speaker 13: Does Father Dunn really believe you go to the gym
- 27:08Speaker 13: every day?
- 27:09Speaker 3: Poor old guy is getting so forgetful.
- 27:13Speaker 13: Lucky you. I called Detective Salvadori today.
- 27:19Speaker 12: And?
- 27:19Speaker 13: Nothing yet. But they're working on it. They're never going
- 27:24Speaker 13: to find him.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Lori starts removing some of her clothes.
- 27:30Speaker 13: Do you feel guilty about our fucking.
- 27:32Speaker 1: What brought that up?
- 27:34Speaker 13: I'm curious.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Sometimes.
- 27:37Speaker 13: But not all the time.
- 27:39Speaker 1: No.
- 27:40Speaker 6: Laurie leaves the kitchen. Interior of Laurie's bedroom continuous. Laurie
- 27:44Speaker 6: goes into her bedroom to finish changing her clothes.
- 27:48Speaker 9: I guess you don't take your vows too seriously.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Well, some would say that I don't.
- 27:54Speaker 8: But you think you do?
- 27:57Speaker 10: For the most part.
- 27:59Speaker 6: Laurie stares at a photo of her son.
- 28:02Speaker 3: You might not believe it, but I'm a good priest.
- 28:06Speaker 8: But by your own rules.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Lori tears herself away from the photo and leaves to
- 28:10Speaker 6: join Father James. Interior, Lori's kitchen, continuous. Father James is
- 28:15Speaker 6: now setting the table. Lori helps him.
- 28:20Speaker 13: I wonder where Will's father is.
- 28:23Speaker 1: When was the last time you saw him?
- 28:25Speaker 13: Before Will was born. I wonder if you can grieve
- 28:29Speaker 13: for a child you never met.
- 28:31Speaker 6: Lori opens a bottle of wine and pours herself a glass.
- 28:35Speaker 13: I broke a promise I made to you. I told
- 28:38Speaker 13: Will about us.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Don't worry.
- 28:40Speaker 13: He's the only one I told.
- 28:41Speaker 9: The scheduling was just getting too complicated.
- 28:46Speaker 13: I thought it would make it easier. Now it's... It's
- 28:50Speaker 13: real easy, isn't it? He had a good laugh.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I thought it was funny.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Lori is sipping her wine.
- 28:57Speaker 13: I'm going to weigh it is. You know, I used
- 29:03Speaker 13: to enjoy my work. Now I hate it. Pity vomits
- 29:08Speaker 13: out of those boys. I know what they're thinking. He
- 29:10Speaker 13: was gay and she just can't accept it. Such queer bullshit.
- 29:15Speaker 13: I started calling them names under my breath.
- 29:19Speaker 1: What can I do for you?
- 29:21Speaker 6: Laurie walks over to Father James.
- 29:24Speaker 13: Forget dinner. Have sex with me before you go. It's
- 29:27Speaker 13: the only time I feel something other than this pain.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Lori kisses Father James passionately as the evening light streams
- 29:34Speaker 6: into the kitchen window. Interior, Paul's apartment.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Evening.
- 29:39Speaker 6: The only lights in the apartment come from the television
- 29:42Speaker 6: and a spill from the bathroom. Paul, who is alone,
- 29:45Speaker 6: is pouring himself a cup of coffee. The phone rings.
- 29:48Speaker 6: Paul does not answer it. The answering machine clicks on.
- 29:51Speaker 8: Hi, it's Paul. You know what to do.
- 29:56Speaker 10: Paul, it's Ron.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I'm getting really pissed.
- 30:00Speaker 10: Get off your ass and give me a call.
- 30:02Speaker 6: Paul picks up the phone.
- 30:03Speaker 9: Hi.
- 30:03Speaker 8: Where the hell have you been? I can't talk now.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Why?
- 30:08Speaker 8: I've got company.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Company? As in company?
- 30:13Speaker 12: Yes.
- 30:14Speaker 6: Holy shit.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I'm calling entertainment tonight.
- 30:17Speaker 8: I'll talk to you later.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I want details, not the graphic ones. Who the hell
- 30:21Speaker 1: am I kidding?
- 30:21Speaker 8: I want the graphic ones.
- 30:22Speaker 15: Later.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Have a good one. Be safe.
- 30:25Speaker 6: Paul hangs up the phone.
- 30:27Speaker 10: Liar, liar. Pants on fire.
- 30:29Speaker 6: Exterior, Susan's building, morning. It is a crisp, clear New
- 30:33Speaker 6: York day. Interior, Susan's small kitchen. Susan's making coffee. Nicholas
- 30:38Speaker 6: walks into the room in his boxer shorts and t-shirt.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Mmm, morning, Mom.
- 30:43Speaker 6: He kisses her.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Paul will be over.
- 30:46Speaker 6: To dinner tonight. Nicholas embraces her.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Do you think we can start.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Thinking of names?
- 30:52Speaker 3: No, no, I don't want to label the kid yet.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Let's just dream about being parents.
- 30:59Speaker 6: Interior, Susan's small bedroom, minutes later. Susan and Nicholas are
- 31:03Speaker 6: finishing dressing and can't help the naming conversation.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Okay, no family names. Something special and unique.
- 31:12Speaker 2: But nothing odd or trendy.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Or common. But a real name.
- 31:16Speaker 3: I mean, not water, river, breeze, peace, ocean, apple, pear.
- 31:22Speaker 6: They fall onto the bed together.
- 31:24Speaker 2: I can't wait to tell Paul.
- 31:27Speaker 11: Why haven't you told him yet?
- 31:29Speaker 6: Susan starts getting off the bed. Dissolved to interior Susan's
- 31:33Speaker 6: living room, evening. Susan, Nicholas, and Paul are sitting around
- 31:37Speaker 6: the table finishing dinner. There is an awkward silence.
- 31:43Speaker 8: That's great news. It's really great. Why'd you wait this
- 31:48Speaker 8: long to tell me that you were expecting?
- 31:51Speaker 3: I have no idea.
- 31:53Speaker 2: It's only been a couple weeks. I was just waiting
- 31:56Speaker 2: for the right happy moment.
- 31:59Speaker 8: I see.
- 32:00Speaker 11: So how are you doing?
- 32:03Speaker 8: I'm going back to meetings.
- 32:04Speaker 3: That's great. And how's work?
- 32:06Speaker 8: I haven't been there for a few days. Taking some
- 32:10Speaker 8: personal time.
- 32:12Speaker 1: For what?
- 32:14Speaker 8: Clearing my head. Taking care of some stuff.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Hey, you alright?
- 32:19Speaker 4: You look tired.
- 32:20Speaker 8: I haven't been sleeping too well, that's all.
- 32:24Speaker 9: Um....
- 32:26Speaker 8: How long are you going to continue teaching?
- 32:29Speaker 2: Until the end of the semester. I don't want to
- 32:32Speaker 2: desert my third graders. And then I'll be about seven months.
- 32:36Speaker 2: It'll be time.
- 32:37Speaker 3: I wish you would stop sooner.
- 32:39Speaker 2: That's soon enough.
- 32:41Speaker 8: Have you thought of any names? Not yet.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Any suggestions?
- 32:45Speaker 8: If it's a boy, how about Kevin?
- 32:49Speaker 3: I don't want to name him after somebody who's dead.
- 32:52Speaker 8: You're bound to. At least it would be somebody you
- 32:55Speaker 8: knew and He was your best friend.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Kevin is a lovely name. I hadn't thought of that.
- 33:01Speaker 8: Consider it.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Is this some kind of test?
- 33:06Speaker 15: Maybe.
- 33:07Speaker 10: Here we go again.
- 33:08Speaker 2: The war of the widowers.
- 33:09Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 33:10Speaker 2: Your pissing contest. Who's grieving more?
- 33:13Speaker 4: You've got to stop using Kevin to get at each other.
- 33:15Speaker 6: A lid has been put on both Nicholas and Paul.
- 33:18Speaker 3: We don't do that.
- 33:20Speaker 10: Right.
- 33:22Speaker 15: Sorry.
- 33:24Speaker 10: Me too.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm just looking for a new beginning.
- 33:28Speaker 8: I'm not there yet, buddy.
- 33:31Speaker 4: I understand.
- 33:31Speaker 8: I better go. Jesus, I am cranky. Guys, forgive me.
- 33:41Speaker 8: I bet Nicholas is worried that that kid might inherit
- 33:43Speaker 8: my moods. I'm so happy for you guys.
- 33:48Speaker 3: And you. The baby is going to be a blessing
- 33:51Speaker 3: for all of us, Uncle Paulie.
- 33:55Speaker 6: Nicholas looks lovingly at Paul as he returns the look. Exterior,
- 33:59Speaker 6: street in front of Susan's apartment, a bit later. Paul
- 34:02Speaker 6: comes out of the building. Daniel emerges from the shadows
- 34:06Speaker 6: and starts following him. Cut to exterior in front of
- 34:09Speaker 6: Richard's salon, day. Paul is looking in the window. He
- 34:13Speaker 6: catches glimpses of Lori. Interior, Richard's beauty salon, moments later.
- 34:18Speaker 6: Lori is dyeing the hair of a 50s or 60s
- 34:21Speaker 6: overweight man. His name is Sam, a wonderful queen. who
- 34:25Speaker 6: does have the tendency to talk too much. With each procedure,
- 34:29Speaker 6: Lori's hostility seems to mount. She tries covering her feelings,
- 34:33Speaker 6: but they are leaking. While Sam is rambling on, Paul
- 34:36Speaker 6: can be seen entering the salon, saying a few words
- 34:38Speaker 6: to Beth, the other stylist, and then taking a seat.
- 34:42Speaker 6: Paul picks up a magazine, pretends to be thumbing through it,
- 34:45Speaker 6: but keeps glancing at Lori.
- 34:47Speaker 15: Oh, you have no idea what I've been through. No
- 34:50Speaker 15: idea whatsoever. They want me for this benefit. They always
- 34:53Speaker 15: want me for the benefits. But what can I say?
- 34:56Speaker 12: No.
- 34:57Speaker 5: I should thank the Lord that I'm still popular.
- 35:00Speaker 15: But I'm not sure what benefit this is for. I
- 35:03Speaker 15: don't think it's for the plague that I wouldn't mind.
- 35:05Speaker 15: I think it's for another cause.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 35:09Speaker 15: Gay boys with babies or lesbians with hula hoops. It
- 35:12Speaker 15: makes you feel like you're killing gay people if you
- 35:14Speaker 15: don't say yes. I don't give a shit that you
- 35:17Speaker 15: have no money and they are loaded. Yeah, but you
- 35:21Speaker 15: do it for free for the cause. Just because you're
- 35:24Speaker 15: a faggot entertainer. Ask these same people if they'll do
- 35:27Speaker 15: your taxes for free. Write your will for free. Clean
- 35:31Speaker 15: your teeth.
- 35:33Speaker 12: But if you're an.
- 35:34Speaker 15: Entertainer, do it for free or you're a sleazebag.
- 35:39Speaker 1: It is a bitch.
- 35:40Speaker 6: Paul, still in the background, looks uncomfortable. He gets up,
- 35:43Speaker 6: seems to be saying a few apologetic words to Beth,
- 35:46Speaker 6: and then leaves.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I'm so much happier as a blonde.
- 35:53Speaker 14: I really am.
- 35:55Speaker 1: There's a certain hotness there.
- 36:00Speaker 15: And the color's right. But honey, I hate to criticize.
- 36:06Speaker 15: The last time the color had too much white in it.
- 36:09Speaker 10: Be careful, please. Okay?
- 36:14Speaker 13: Okay.
- 36:14Speaker 1: I mean, you have no.
- 36:16Speaker 15: Idea what it's like to be in my business. How
- 36:18Speaker 15: difficult it is if your wig isn't right. If the
- 36:21Speaker 15: color isn't perfect, if the dress isn't drop dead, if
- 36:26Speaker 15: your song isn't a home run.
- 36:28Speaker 13: Why don't you get yourself a real life?
- 36:35Speaker 1: I have a real life.
- 36:36Speaker 9: You really think that being a blonde is going to
- 36:38Speaker 9: make you more desirable?
- 36:40Speaker 1: What are you getting at?
- 36:42Speaker 12: Now?
- 36:46Speaker 1: Don't be mean.
- 36:48Speaker 13: That's what you want.
- 36:50Speaker 9: You want to be younger so you can get laid
- 36:52Speaker 9: like that's really going to happen.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I don't need this. I don't need this today.
- 36:58Speaker 13: I don't give a shit if this dye makes you bald.
- 37:01Speaker 6: By this time, everyone in the salon is listening to
- 37:04Speaker 6: Lori and Sam.
- 37:05Speaker 10: What the hell are you doing?
- 37:07Speaker 6: All eyes are on Lori. She's gathering her things. Sam
- 37:10Speaker 6: sits with his hair half done, wanting to disappear.
- 37:13Speaker 5: Apologize.
- 37:14Speaker 6: Lori goes into the back room.
- 37:16Speaker 5: Beth, take care of Sam.
- 37:17Speaker 6: Richard follows Lori as Beth tries to comfort Sam. Interior,
- 37:22Speaker 6: backroom continuous, Lori is getting the rest of her things.
- 37:26Speaker 10: You hurt him.
- 37:27Speaker 9: That fat queen is as hard as nails.
- 37:30Speaker 5: That's not true.
- 37:31Speaker 13: He's some pathetic throwback.
- 37:33Speaker 9: Today I couldn't stand looking at him, couldn't stand listening
- 37:35Speaker 9: to him, and I have to tell you, I hated
- 37:37Speaker 9: touching him.
- 37:39Speaker 13: Why a man would want to act like that?
- 37:41Speaker 5: He does a lot for our community.
- 37:43Speaker 13: So he's a fucking saint.
- 37:45Speaker 5: He's a beautiful guy.
- 37:47Speaker 12: Ha!
- 37:48Speaker 8: Where's the beauty?
- 37:49Speaker 5: He's totally reinvented himself.
- 37:51Speaker 13: That is one useless invention.
- 37:53Speaker 5: Lori, I know you're very angry.
- 37:56Speaker 13: I shouldn't work here anymore. Stop booking me. I'll come
- 37:59Speaker 13: back tomorrow and finish out the week. I hate coming
- 38:02Speaker 13: here and I'm beginning to hate you.
- 38:04Speaker 5: Please don't say that.
- 38:05Speaker 13: Don't give me your martyrdom. I'm a good person.
- 38:07Speaker 5: Look.
- 38:09Speaker 13: Why don't you call me a bitch? Why aren't you
- 38:12Speaker 13: yelling at me? Are you frightened?
- 38:13Speaker 9: Are you consumed with so much pity for me that
- 38:16Speaker 9: you can't think?
- 38:18Speaker 8: What is it?
- 38:19Speaker 5: You're my friend, and you need help.
- 38:21Speaker 14: And that stupid fat queen doesn't... Lori leaves the room.
- 38:26Speaker 6: Richard follows her. Interior, Richard's beauty salon, continuous. Beth is
- 38:31Speaker 6: with Sam, who is truly upset, trying to finish his
- 38:34Speaker 6: hair and calm him down. Lori rushes through the salon
- 38:37Speaker 6: to the front door. Richard is following her.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Is she gonna say she's sorry? Are you firing her?
- 38:45Speaker 13: Kiss my straight ass!
- 38:47Speaker 6: Richard suddenly stops following her. End of Act One.
