Invasive water chestnuts are choking Oneida Lake, growing up to 15 feet and blocking sunlight while damaging gear with their sharp nuts. With a $921K federal grant, volunteers are tackling the problem head-on by hand-pulling the plants — the most eco-friendly method that targets only invaders. One seed can spawn 300 new plants, and seeds stay viable for 12 years, making early, consistent removal critical.
