Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And we'll be taking a look at the Florida Gators.
- 0:04Speaker 1: You know, if you look pretty closely. We mentioned this
- 0:07Speaker 1: earlier in the program, but if you look pretty closely
- 0:09Speaker 1: at Florida, you'll see they've been far more competitive than
- 0:14Speaker 1: you might imagine, given the fact that they had the
- 0:17Speaker 1: struggles and Billy Napier's name being brought up as whatever
- 0:25Speaker 1: on his job on the line, that sort of thing.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So it might surprise you to know that they've been very,
- 0:34Speaker 1: very competitive in a foreign four season with some of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the games that you would kind of went for example,
- 0:39Speaker 1: overtime loss in Knoxville to Tennessee. Now, yes, they were
- 0:43Speaker 1: blown out by Miami to open the season, and then
- 0:46Speaker 1: of course they had the injuries afterwards. First of all,
- 0:49Speaker 1: Graham Mert starting the season, and then DJ Lagway, the
- 0:54Speaker 1: freshman from Willis High School at Texas High School product,
- 0:58Speaker 1: coming in playing really really well. Then he struggled and
- 1:02Speaker 1: Merch went back in, and then of course he had
- 1:04Speaker 1: the season ending any knee injury. And now all of
- 1:07Speaker 1: the expectation is that Lagway won't be able to go
- 1:12Speaker 1: on Saturday because of that hamstring injury, and we're probably
- 1:16Speaker 1: going to be taking a look again at the freshman
- 1:19Speaker 1: transfer from Yale, the red shirt freshman Aiden Warner in
- 1:23Speaker 1: all probability, and we had that. You heard the conversation
- 1:27Speaker 1: that we have with Sean Kelly in the first hour
- 1:29Speaker 1: of the program. So, but this is a team that
- 1:33Speaker 1: has surprised some folks with how competitive they've been of late.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And that includes the game last Saturday in Jacksonville against
- 1:40Speaker 1: Georgia where they led at the half and it was
- 1:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty into the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs pulled
- 1:46Speaker 1: away with a couple of late touchdowns. So this is
- 1:49Speaker 1: not a team that's going to roll over. And you've
- 1:51Speaker 1: already heard from head coach Steve Sarkisian how physically tough
- 1:56Speaker 1: and imposing that they can look like and can be.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You know, they look and act and play, so to speak,
- 2:07Speaker 1: like an SEC team. So we'll talk more about it
- 2:09Speaker 1: with sark coming up tonight on Longhorn Weekly, Coming your way,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and again we record the program at six o'clock tonight,
- 2:19Speaker 1: So if you want to be there for the show,
- 2:21Speaker 1: I know that it airs on Thursdays, but we record
- 2:24Speaker 1: the program on Wednesday evenings at six, So that's your
- 2:28Speaker 1: appointment thing. If you want to be there to hear
- 2:30Speaker 1: from Sart and we'll recorded at six o'clock. There are
- 2:36Speaker 1: question cards. He addresses questions from the fans as well
- 2:39Speaker 1: and the special guests. As we mentioned Nate Boyer, who
- 2:44Speaker 1: was such a great story as a Persian Gulf War
- 2:47Speaker 1: veteran and a guy who special forces that whole thing
- 2:54Speaker 1: and then came back at age thirty two and made
- 2:58Speaker 1: the football team and worked on special teams and deep snappers.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It was great to see, you know, It's always good
- 3:05Speaker 1: to see Nate Boyer, and we'll see him tonight. He's
- 3:06Speaker 1: our special guest to see me. College basketball will come
- 3:11Speaker 1: your way on Friday night and that will be the
- 3:18Speaker 1: home opener for the Texas Longhorns and they'll be taking
- 3:22Speaker 1: on Houston Christian the Huskies and the Longhorns would be
- 3:27Speaker 1: looking to bounce back after the loss against Ohio State.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And I don't know if you noticed this. You know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: Texas A and M of course went into its game
- 3:39Speaker 1: with UCF ranked thirteenth in the country and lost on
- 3:43Speaker 1: Monday night, say night that the Longhorns lost as number
- 3:46Speaker 1: nineteen in the country to Ohio State, and A and
- 3:50Speaker 1: M went down to Orlando, they lost to UCF number thirteen,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and I don't know if you saw it, but the
- 4:03Speaker 1: fans stormed the court. They did there and they were
- 4:08Speaker 1: picked to finish. UCF has picked to finish eleventh out
- 4:13Speaker 1: of the sixteen teams in the Big Twelve. And Wade Taylor,
- 4:19Speaker 1: the fourth who was first team All SEC last year
- 4:24Speaker 1: and A and M projected finished fifth in the league.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Johnny Dawkins was excited about He's an unbelievable environment. Who
- 4:29Speaker 1: wouldn't want to be here playing in front of this crowd.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Our student section is amazing. I'm just really really happy
- 4:34Speaker 1: for our guys. Our fans come out and they support us.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Just seeing the evolution of our program over the years,
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm just really excited to see where this program can go.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And Darius Johnson a big returning veteran. He hit a
- 4:48Speaker 1: big game last year when UCF defeated Texas at Moody Center.
- 4:51Speaker 1: He had twenty four points for of the Knights in
- 4:54Speaker 1: that win over Texas A and M. And then I
- 4:58Speaker 1: thought this was rather humorous well that the Big Twelve
- 5:03Speaker 1: used the opportunity the conference to kind of take a
- 5:06Speaker 1: little poke at the SEC on social media with the
- 5:11Speaker 1: phrase it just means more. How about a conference, uh
- 5:17Speaker 1: tweet saying it just means more not not not an
- 5:21Speaker 1: individual school. Uh, you know, because you have the social
- 5:27Speaker 1: media students and or employees who are in charge of
- 5:35Speaker 1: tweeting out and you know whatever, putting out on x
- 5:39Speaker 1: and and uh you know other other platforms as well,
- 5:43Speaker 1: Instagram and so on. Uh. The you might say, extolling
- 5:48Speaker 1: the virtues and the exploits of an athletic program, now
- 5:53Speaker 1: that happens pretty regularly with virtually every athletic program in
- 5:59Speaker 1: the country. In the University of Texas is you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: no exception to this rule. So but for a conference
- 6:10Speaker 1: to do it, that was the thing I think that
- 6:11Speaker 1: surprised some folks that a conference would do that. So
- 6:17Speaker 1: anyway it came out, there was a good little poke,
- 6:22Speaker 1: you might say, at the SEC, since the thirteenth ranked
- 6:25Speaker 1: team in the country did lose to one of what's
- 6:29Speaker 1: projected to be one of their bottom feeders. On that
- 6:33Speaker 1: coming up on Friday night, there's a pretty big college
- 6:38Speaker 1: basketball game that'll be going on in addition to the
- 6:41Speaker 1: games going on across the country. And as we mentioned,
- 6:42Speaker 1: of course, Texas in action against Houston Christian at seven
- 6:46Speaker 1: o'clock at Moody Center. Will be on the air at
- 6:48Speaker 1: six thirty with the pregame start time and the tip
- 6:51Speaker 1: off at seven o'clock. Also going on Friday night is
- 6:56Speaker 1: top rank Kansas and number nine North Carolina, two of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the real blue blood programs literally and figuratively in college basketball,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and both are coming off wins. North Carolina got pushed
- 7:08Speaker 1: for a little while by Elon. The Target Hills had
- 7:11Speaker 1: like an eleven point a half time lead. Elon had
- 7:14Speaker 1: a big second half run, I think a fourteen oh run,
- 7:16Speaker 1: took the lead. Carolina close with a big run down
- 7:19Speaker 1: the stretch and pulled away. Kansas had no such drama.
- 7:23Speaker 1: They won pretty. They won by thirty points over Howard
- 7:26Speaker 1: Hunter Dickinson back on the court. He's the guy who
- 7:30Speaker 1: I think is probably the odds on favorite to be
- 7:34Speaker 1: the Wooden Award winner, the Natesmith Award winner. He sat
- 7:37Speaker 1: out the Jayhawks two exhibition games because of a minor injury,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but he was back in the lineup for their opener
- 7:42Speaker 1: of the other night. He had sixteen points in that one,
- 7:45Speaker 1: and he was five of eight from the field in
- 7:47Speaker 1: twenty one minutes, added six rebounds, three steals, two block
- 7:51Speaker 1: shots as well, so that's going to be an interesting
- 7:54Speaker 1: game to take note of on Friday night, with North
- 7:57Speaker 1: Carolina playing at Canns. Normally when those two schools meet,
- 8:03Speaker 1: it's in like early season tournament play or classic play,
- 8:07Speaker 1: like say at Madison Square Garden or in Brooklyn where
- 8:10Speaker 1: Texas will be later on this month, or in some
- 8:15Speaker 1: of the other places like that Las Vegas. You know,
- 8:19Speaker 1: Usually it's not an on campus thing between the two,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but it is going to be an on campus deal,
- 8:23Speaker 1: so it'll be on Friday night. So that'll be at
- 8:27Speaker 1: Allen Field House. That'll be quite interesting to see. All right.
- 8:30Speaker 1: When we come back, we'll wrap up today's edition of
- 8:33Speaker 1: the program on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone in
- 8:36Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app.
