- 1:36Welcome back, everyone. Making sure that my camera
- 1:40angles and all the fun stuff like that or good.
- 1:42We're looking good. Alright, we are looking good and
- 1:44we are back took a short break last week which is important
- 1:48guys. And I appreciate everyone's
- 1:51understanding with that, you know, I always feel like it's,
- 1:57you know, part of my responsibility and obligation to
- 1:59put you know, regular meaningful content out and I try to do my
- 2:04best with that. And then there's sometimes where
- 2:06I say, you know what, I need anytime.
- 2:08Away. I need to just you know, take a
- 2:10break from from this thing and I have a luxury of doing that.
- 2:14This isn't a means of income to support my family.
- 2:19This is more of a hobby and in you know all of you folks that
- 2:22are subscribed following and doing everything that you do to
- 2:29you know, stay in touch with what I put out here, is greatly
- 2:33appreciated but it's not my bread and butter as they say,
- 2:36you know. So I take the Liberty to take
- 2:37care. Of.
- 2:39Myself and those that are my first obligation.
- 2:45My first responsibility is my family and I want you guys to
- 2:47remember to do the same thing, you know, I saw something a
- 2:51couple of weeks ago on a on somebody's like Facebook
- 2:58timeline and it was it was something that I thought was
- 3:01important and I shared it and it said something along the lines
- 3:03of, you know this is a reminder especially around this time of
- 3:08year the holidays Season is that you are under no obligation or
- 3:13responsibility to put yourself through financial emotional.
- 3:19Mental anxiety stress and stuff like that, just to give somebody
- 3:25something or whatever and you know, this time of year is very
- 3:28stressful for a lot of people. Because again, they feel
- 3:30obligated to do things that they probably aren't obligated to do,
- 3:35you know this this, you know, just inherent Dick feeling of
- 3:41up, it's the holiday season I got up, you know, by shit for
- 3:43everybody. And you know you don't you don't
- 3:46have, you may have certain people that you have obligations
- 3:49to and everybody's life and everybody's family's a little
- 3:51bit different, but always remember that if you can't be
- 3:54the best version of yourself at the most, you know, best Peak
- 4:01Performance, and all that, then you're you're selling everybody
- 4:05else, short, you're not going to be able to do the things that
- 4:07you feel that you're obligated to do anyway.
- 4:10To the best of your ability. So take the time as my point,
- 4:13you know, to take care of to take care of yourself.
- 4:17So it kind of ties into what's going on this week on this
- 4:21podcast. And so with the holidays coming
- 4:25right around the corner. As of right now.
- 4:27We are, you know, one week away from the start of what a lot of
- 4:31you pagans out here talking about is you'll or Yuletide.
- 4:36And as you can tell from the name of this podcast, your Doing
- 4:39it wrong. I'm just kidding.
- 4:41I, I've gone on the record a lot of times as saying that there's
- 4:46nobody out here that can tell you how to Heathen or how to
- 4:50practice your paganism or how to practice your spirituality to
- 4:54the degree. That if they tell you, you're
- 4:55doing it wrong, then you probably need to listen to other
- 4:58people. Now, with that being said, there
- 5:01are some things that should be considered with, with regards to
- 5:06accuracy or you know, being being sure that you're
- 5:15understanding what it is that You think you're saying is is
- 5:20factual or correct? And I know a lot of folks this
- 5:24time of year going into the end of December, are excited because
- 5:30again, it's, you know, you will and you will tie it and all this
- 5:33other very, you know, Festivus winter celebrations.
- 5:41And I wanted to talk about you'll today.
- 5:44I know a lot of content creators around this time of year are
- 5:47putting out stuff. Cards with regards to to You'll
- 5:52and saying, you know, you know, you'll was, you'll came first
- 5:58and, you know, the Christians stole everything about you'll
- 6:02and turned it into Christmas. And you know, if you want to,
- 6:08you know, make any sort of claims about, you know, paganism
- 6:13being bad and you should stop celebrating Christmas because
- 6:16it's full of pagan, you know? Ritual and imagery and
- 6:22traditions, and customs, and all these sorts of things, right?
- 6:26Well, I wanted to again, talk about.
- 6:29You'll from a historical angle at least to the degree that we
- 6:34know of and to sort of help you guys determine that, what what
- 6:38you may already know? Some of you.
- 6:40Some of you may be learning a thing or two about it and again
- 6:44this is this is information that I'm going to be citing sources
- 6:47for down in the Description and show notes of this podcast.
- 6:50So, you know, when you're done listening or watching this You
- 6:55can fact check it yourself, you know, when you can go and do
- 6:59your own research, which I always encourage encourage
- 7:02people to do themselves. Instead of just, you know, it's
- 7:04like the old Reading Rainbow LeVar Burton, right?
- 7:07At the end of every episode of Reading Rainbow.
- 7:10I remember as a kid, you know, Levar would always say but you
- 7:13don't have to take my word for it.
- 7:16And that's, that's, that's great.
- 7:18You know, and it's what I always encourage.
- 7:19People, don't take my word for it, don't take anybody else's
- 7:22word for it. Back it up with your own
- 7:24research and make sure that that that anything that you find that
- 7:28could potentially be. You know, contradicting what is
- 7:33said from what you heard gets brought to the brought out to
- 7:38light, you know? Because the one thing that I've
- 7:41come to realize is, you know, knowledge is constantly growing,
- 7:45you know, people are constantly growing, we're all learning new
- 7:48things and especially with trying to Loosely reconstruct or
- 7:54hardcore reconstruct. If you're if you're like a
- 7:56hardcore Reconstructionist, you know there's so much that you
- 8:01know 20 30 years ago. We didn't know that we know now
- 8:04and it changes things for us. So you know, it's constantly
- 8:08growing is constantly evolving and we have to grow and evolve
- 8:10with it if that's your angle. So you know, as I said before
- 8:16it, we're coming into the time of year where everybody is all
- 8:20excited because they're they're, they're making Is to do things
- 8:23with their with their tribes with their kindred's with their
- 8:28groups of you know other like-minded.
- 8:30Folks, to celebrate this, you know, winter festival, which we
- 8:36refer to as you will. And and I'll one of the very one
- 8:40of the very common things to to adopt is the 12 nights of fuel
- 8:46in and they you know interchange it with the 12 nights of
- 8:48Christmas and make it into the 12 nights of you land forever.
- 8:52Every twelve nights that lead up to the end of the month of
- 8:57December. There's a specific celebration
- 9:00or a specific, you know, Focus. Whether it be to ancestors,
- 9:07whether it be to a certain god or goddess, or what have you.
- 9:11And so every night starting on the first of the 12 nights of
- 9:16quote-unquote, you'll everybody is doing different things and
- 9:20it's pretty readily, you know, discoverable if you just, you
- 9:24know, Google 12 nights of you will.
- 9:25If you Google, you'll you're probably going to find most, you
- 9:30know, information to reflect something around this time of
- 9:34year in December, right? And that there's 12 nights.
- 9:36And, you know, the first nights is, is Mother's night and on and
- 9:39on down the line, there's there's a night for Thor,
- 9:42there's a night for Odom, there's a night for the
- 9:43Valkyries. There's a night for I guess.
- 9:46Frig there's all different kinds of you know, focuses.
- 9:52On each night, leading up to the end of the year at the end of
- 9:56the, you know, the calendar month of December.
- 10:01Now, this does not, this is this, this episode, right?
- 10:05This is not intended to Scold or it again, tell people, you're
- 10:14doing it wrong. If this is the way that you
- 10:16think you will should be celebrated, then then you're
- 10:18doing it all wrong. All this is meant to do is just
- 10:21be again. A lesson on learning
- 10:24educational, right? And then whatever fits right?
- 10:28So like I'm going to just use an example.
- 10:30If there's a group of pagans of heathens will say that that have
- 10:33been celebrating their Yule tide or you'll time festivals or
- 10:39celebrations with their Group for the last x amount of years
- 10:42for however, long it might be and they do it in the month of
- 10:45December, and they do it for twelve nights and it works for
- 10:48them than there is no reason for them to stop doing it that way.
- 10:55Because I feel that there is more value and there's more
- 10:59importance in the purpose behind doing it rather than the, you
- 11:05know, my doing it. Historically correct.
- 11:08Am I, you know, am I following? The observances of the Ewell.
- 11:16Time of year the, you know that the Festival of you or am I
- 11:19following it based off of historical sources and I doing
- 11:23it that way, or am I doing it? Just what I've, you know, read
- 11:26in a book, you know, in the library years ago or what I
- 11:29Googled and found online in the first article that I, that, I
- 11:33stumbled across really what it matters is.
- 11:36Why are you doing it that way the purpose behind what you're
- 11:38doing? And if you've achieved good
- 11:41results doing it that way, then my whole thing is, you know, if
- 11:44it ain't broke, don't fix it. Now if you're exploring certain
- 11:51aspects of your paganism of your Heathen Ray and you're trying
- 11:55to, you know, adopt it in the most authentic way possible
- 11:59while, you know, following a historical approach to things
- 12:02and this maybe, you know, more up your alley.
- 12:07Maybe you haven't quite set a specific way of Doing things.
- 12:10Maybe you're, you know, testing the waters.
- 12:13You did it this way, one year and now you're trying it the
- 12:15different way another year. And I you're kind of going back
- 12:17and forth and you're adopting different things, right?
- 12:20One thing I've seen very, very recently and I say recently like
- 12:25within the last few years, was this rise of these soon?
- 12:28Oh wait I think it's soon await our son.
- 12:30Wait candles where you've got eight?
- 12:36Candles that you lie. So at eight the candles that are
- 12:39It represents the first set of it, I think on the elder futhark
- 12:45or something like that and you've got so each candle
- 12:50represents a rune and there's a thing that you're supposed to do
- 12:53any sign. It reminds me of like Advent in
- 12:55a way. It really reminds me of, like, a
- 12:58heathen Twist on Advent. Very, very modern.
- 13:02I don't even recall where the thing originated.
- 13:05I think it popped up somewhere and in Germany or Sweden, maybe
- 13:11or something, I forget, but if you look up, son, wait, candles
- 13:14online, there's there's there's articles about its origin, it's
- 13:17very, very new when I say no. I mean, like, just within the
- 13:19last, you know, 50 years, maybe the mat the most in it.
- 13:25So it doesn't have ancient historical sources of doing
- 13:29anything, but it is a very commonly adopted new age.
- 13:34You want to call it? Neo-pagan Neo, Heathen?
- 13:35I don't know. Ian for some heathens around
- 13:43this time of year round you'll. And again, if that's something
- 13:45you want to test out, you want to figure it out.
- 13:46You want to read more about, you want to learn more about it, see
- 13:50if it fits your practices and eight, give it a shot.
- 13:53It ain't like, if you do it, it's going to render you a
- 13:55useless, Heathen or useless Pagan or your you know the worst
- 13:58Pagan ever for having tried it, it's you know, test the waters
- 14:01out, see if it works but it definitely doesn't have any
- 14:06historical. You know, basis that we have
- 14:10Source material to back up. So what we're going to talk
- 14:13about today is is historical, you'll right?
- 14:17So you'll was a mid winter. Celebration.
- 14:21It was one of the three High feasts or three High major bloat
- 14:27such as it were that were observed by the.
- 14:33In Germanic peoples the Germanic tribes prior to the Viking age
- 14:39prior to the Christian influence of of Germania and Scandinavian
- 14:45countries and Mainland Germania. So when it was held Old.
- 14:52Okay was not at the end of December.
- 14:55So you have to think about the way that time was reckoned or
- 14:59that the way that time was observed prior to the
- 15:04christianization of the area's. You know, the way that the
- 15:08Germanic tribes would observe time was was based off of the
- 15:11lunar solar lunisolar calendar. So when was the new moon, when
- 15:16was the full moons and and that sort of thing?
- 15:20And you all is a mid winter. Festival, with a Midwinter.
- 15:29Bloat out of all of the major bloats.
- 15:32This is again, one of the most important ones Seager.
- 15:36Bloats the victory bloat in the beginning of summer, winter
- 15:39nights, which starts the beginning of the winter months
- 15:42and then you'll being the third one that signifies the middle of
- 15:46winter. We've kind of we've reached the
- 15:49we see light at the end of the tunnel.
- 15:51We're getting lighter days now soon, you know, the crops we can
- 15:55start thinking about planting once the Winter months are gone,
- 16:00you know so it's kind of like that you know mid Midway point
- 16:05of the harshest time of the year in the north and you've made it.
- 16:09You you survive you haven't died.
- 16:11You haven't Frozen you haven't, you know, been robbed or killed
- 16:15or anything like that. So it's a time of celebration
- 16:18for making it through the the middle of the harshest time of
- 16:22the year in the North. And every major bloat, every
- 16:27High Feast. Every, every major, you know,
- 16:30historically documented celebration, that was held was
- 16:34held for three nights, you will is no different.
- 16:39So you'll Is known to more recently.
- 16:47Now, be celebrated on a course, a full moon now, which Full Moon
- 16:57are we talking about? Because again, we've got x
- 17:00amount of months of the year and if and if we're looking at it
- 17:02from a historical, You know that historical heathen.
- 17:11Perspective. We're looking at the house.
- 17:16I can because I'm pulling up my notes Here.
- 17:23You know, the it didn't fall on fix days of the year.
- 17:25And that's and that's one thing. It's like when we see modern
- 17:30Renditions of you'll, it's like, you'll starts on December 21st
- 17:34with Mother's night, and it ends on December 31st with, you know,
- 17:37whatever. The last night of you'll the 12
- 17:40nights of fuel. That's not how it worked back
- 17:42then, you know, again, the way the, the lunar solar Cycles,
- 17:48when the full moons in the new moons.
- 17:52Began and started. We got to look at it from that
- 17:59perspective. Plus we also have sources that
- 18:01tell us that it was, you know, this and that there were three
- 18:06nights to it all. So, the moon cycle start on the
- 18:13new moon. So the moon cycle is from New
- 18:14Moon to New Moon and full moon is the what's happening in
- 18:20between. So when did you will get
- 18:26celebrated? It was I lost my notes here
- 18:34because it can get It's the first full moon after the third
- 18:41new moon or something like that. Hold on.
- 18:43I'm going to find it. I have all these Yeah, every new
- 18:47moon begins a month. New moon to New Moon was the
- 18:50cycle, which is where we get the word month from because it's a
- 18:56loaner lunisolar thing. Where is it?
- 19:12I'm gonna fight it guys. Just bear with me here.
- 19:14You guys can shrill out for just a second of this.
- 19:19It yeah, you will is the so, when, if we're, if we're trying
- 19:24to make a rule, right? If we're, if we're going to look
- 19:28at knowing when the holidays were, were kept from a
- 19:34historical Heathen perspective. If we're going to look at that,
- 19:38we can come up with a dramatic rule for you'll.
- 19:41Maybe. So rule for you all.
- 19:45Is that you will is always Ways celebrated or always lands on
- 19:50the first full moon? After the first new moon,
- 19:56Following the winter solstice. So when winter solstice hits?
- 20:01We're actually I think at the time of the this podcast airing
- 20:07where you know less than a week away, So you know right around
- 20:12this time next week give or take six five six five or six days or
- 20:16so from now we're hitting the winter solstice.
- 20:20So the first full moon after the first new moon after the winter
- 20:24solstice. So this you'll coming up, right?
- 20:30From historical Heathen perspective is going to be on
- 20:34the full moon in January, the first full moon in January,
- 20:37which is going to be January. Sixth last year.
- 20:40It was a different date. The next year, it's going to be
- 20:42a different date. So you gotta follow the cycles
- 20:44of the Moon. To know, when you'll hit same
- 20:48way with all the other major, holy Tides, because the major
- 20:52like, you'll sigurd loathe inventor nights or event.
- 20:55Their nature, where held at on the full moon for three nights
- 20:59long. So, on the third night, was the
- 21:02full moon and that was when the feasting and all the
- 21:05celebrations culminated and concluded.
- 21:07So, They were not 12 nights of you'll or there were not 12
- 21:12nights of you. I should say there were always
- 21:14three nights of you'll and it happened in roughly January ish.
- 21:22It's going to probably vary a bit again, based off of the
- 21:25lunisolar calendar that or the lunar solar Cycles.
- 21:28So you're never going to have you'll land on the same month,
- 21:31day of the month of the year, every year, not like how again,
- 21:34as I mentioned before, the modern Twist on the 12, Nights
- 21:39of Christmas 12 nights of you. You're always going to have it
- 21:43land on the same days and nights doesn't didn't work that way
- 21:46back then. So how do we know that it was
- 21:49three nights? And how do we know that this was
- 21:53was when and how it was done? We've got several sources that
- 21:59talk about this. I'm going to find a few to read
- 22:07through real quick. Yeah, so one of the big one of
- 22:15the biggest reference sources is hamstring.
- 22:19Le Saga Saga of hakan. The good.
- 22:25Who was, of course, king of Norway that United everything
- 22:28and he was the first Christian King, and he's the reason.
- 22:35For the season. Or I should say better say, he's
- 22:39the reason why. The Christmas holiday.
- 22:47Now in December is called you'll because in Scandinavia today, At
- 22:54the time that when Hawking the good was was was King.
- 22:58He changed the store at the old way of doing things, the Pagan
- 23:02way of doing things and moved it back to align with the Julian
- 23:06calendar, that was adopted or that was being adopted in the
- 23:10conversion period when Scandinavia was becoming
- 23:13christianized. And he moved it back, so that
- 23:17way. The people of the land, you
- 23:20know, that we're celebrating their old Pagan ways could align
- 23:24with how the Christ mass, or Christmas, how, and when that
- 23:29was observed. So there was already Christmas,
- 23:31there was already the Christ Mass.
- 23:33This was something he wasn't that Christmas got discovered or
- 23:38got, you know, Twisted into or from old Pagan ways, it would
- 23:40already existed. It was already there.
- 23:43So, so when everybody's like, oh, you know, they stole you'll
- 23:46from us, no, they didn't. They had their own thing.
- 23:49It just got moved up, thanks to Oaxaca, and over here.
- 23:54So in the Chapter a see chapter 15 of The Saga.
- 24:02Him swing The Saga Saga of Hawking, the good King haakon
- 24:05was a good Christian when he came to Norway, but as the whole
- 24:07country was Heathen, with much, Heathen, bloat.
- 24:13And as many great people, as well as the favor of the common
- 24:17people were to be conciliated. He resolved to practice his
- 24:23Christianity in private, but he kept Sundays and the they fasts
- 24:28and some tokens of the great holy days, he made a law that
- 24:31the Festival of you'll should begin at the same time as
- 24:36Christian people held it. There Christ mass and that,
- 24:39every man under penalty should brew a meal of malt into a land
- 24:43there with, keep the you'll holy as long as it lasted before him.
- 24:49The first night of you all was on hook.
- 24:51A note that is midwinter night and you'll was held for three
- 24:55nights. It was his intent As soon as he
- 24:57had set himself fast in the land and had subjected the whole to
- 25:01his power to introduce Christianity, he went to work
- 25:04first by enticing, the Christianity to Christianity,
- 25:07The Men Who were desired dearest to him and many had a friendship
- 25:11to him allowed themselves to be baptized in some later side
- 25:14performing blow. So again, thanks to Hawk in the
- 25:17good in Norway and that's where people started.
- 25:22Moving their Pagan practices of you'll in The midwinter January,
- 25:30ish timeframe back to when again, the Christmas holiday is
- 25:36being held now. So that's why we see, you know,
- 25:3812 nights of your. I think there's there's some
- 25:40similarity so that but again it was never historically, 12
- 25:42nights. It was always, it was always
- 25:44three nights. Up up, up, up up, up.
- 25:49Let's see here. So there's another reference to
- 26:00the the major bloats that I alluded to earlier, you'll see
- 26:03go to bloat and winter nights. There's a mention of these in
- 26:06the angling, The Saga Saga, the Younglings which has Swedish.
- 26:14And you know it's the chronolock chronicles of the Kings and
- 26:18ancestry of kings of Sweden. But in England.
- 26:22Like a chapter 8 from about the year 1225.
- 26:26So again we're already talking about after the Viking age
- 26:32lists, the three great bloats of the year and it's quoted says
- 26:36Odin established. The same law in his land that
- 26:39had been in force in all salon on winter day.
- 26:43First day of winter, there should be a bloat for a good
- 26:46year. And in the middle of winter for
- 26:49a good crop, this is you'll. And then, the third blow should
- 26:53be on a summer day. A victory bloat, which is what
- 26:57Seger bloat is. So see good blow is Victory
- 27:01bloat in Old Norse. Already talked about hamstring,
- 27:05The Saga, The Saga of Hawking, the good about the the you'll
- 27:11being celebrated for three nights, that's again in the mid
- 27:141200s, you know, when it was written.
- 27:18We also see a reference to this, in the poetic Edda in the lay of
- 27:23helgi, the son of heareth of sorry Horvath.
- 27:27Sure Barth It's a very long. Passage.
- 27:32I'm not going to read it right now.
- 27:34It's there's a lot to it there, but I'll leave a name for you
- 27:37guys to research if you coming. I'm sure there's got to be PDFs
- 27:41or if any of you have a copy of the poetic Edda, it is again.
- 27:47I'm not going to butcher the the old Norse name.
- 27:48But it's I think it's Helga Vita your wassenaar delay of helgi,
- 27:53the son of George Barth, and it's in chapter 4.
- 27:56So, I want to like, I'm going to mention that down in the show
- 27:58notes and in the description as well, aside from that, if you
- 28:04are looking at this from a Saxon angle, the Saxon Heathen angle,
- 28:11You're familiar with bead. So this this is some old stuff.
- 28:18This is way before the start of the Viking age.
- 28:23So this is around 725 a.d. and one of the AIDS work, D Temple
- 28:28room rate, rushing own, I don't know, I don't speak Latin but in
- 28:33but bead says that thus the Moon by which they began their winter
- 28:36season was called winter, affiliate a name Compounded of
- 28:41the terms for winter and full moon.
- 28:44Because from the full moon of that Moon, Winter was thought to
- 28:48begin. so again, there's there's a lot of other Scholarly work,
- 29:00you know that that is better than than what?
- 29:02I can tell you here, right now that confirms that you can you,
- 29:08it was three nights, you'll was done, midwinter in the North in,
- 29:14you know, around the January time frame.
- 29:16It was never set the same day or month of the year every year.
- 29:19Because again, The cycles of the moon change.
- 29:25But so those are some differences, right?
- 29:26Those are some differences to what is done now versus what was
- 29:30done. Now, let's look at some
- 29:31similarities, right? What are some things about?
- 29:35You'll historically that were done.
- 29:40That are Done today. Regardless of when you do it
- 29:44whether it's you know, the 12 months of yule in December /
- 29:47Christmas or if you do it around more closely to the historically
- 29:52reckoned keeping of it. So what are some things that
- 29:55were similar than that are read? You know relived and see now
- 29:59terms of traditions or Customs, right, and bear.
- 30:04In mind, I'm just deciding a few things.
- 30:06Mentioning, a few of the more common ones that there's
- 30:08probably at least a hundred or more different sagas that have
- 30:12reference to You'll plus the Ed is, you know, so we don't know
- 30:16everything that there is to know about historical.
- 30:19You'll yet, we're still figuring a lot of things out.
- 30:22We're still coming up a lot of things.
- 30:23That's why I mentioned earlier on that.
- 30:25A lot of the stuff that was known back in, you know, 10, 20,
- 30:2830 years ago, probably was what we knew back then and now
- 30:31discovering new things. So it's always growing and we're
- 30:34always changing. But as of what we can conclude,
- 30:38you know, right now, one of the big things is that there was
- 30:40gift-giving At you'll, you know, especially during sambal, which
- 30:46was a ritual in itself, there were again, three days, three
- 30:54nights, we know that. But that the the way that the
- 30:59Ewell was celebrated with gift-giving, this is pretty
- 31:02standard for all of the Germanic tribes regardless of the region.
- 31:10A couple other neat things is that in specially Sweden?
- 31:14You know so for some of the nurse countries that the
- 31:17Scandinavian countries, especially Sweden, you'll was a
- 31:19bloat to start thinking about planting of crops.
- 31:22And as I mentioned before, you've made it through the worst
- 31:24part of the winter, the harshest part of the Year things are
- 31:29starting to look up a bit. You know, you can start looking
- 31:30forward to longer days. Warmer days, the return of the
- 31:34son of his life which you know, help your Crops grow.
- 31:41And you know again there was a lot of feasting.
- 31:43There was a lot of drinking. There was, I know a lot of
- 31:49folks, nowadays, ourselves included like my My Family, My
- 31:53Tribe. When we do our usual we always
- 31:55have a ham, you know, and granted, we're not set up, you
- 31:59know to slaughter or raise our own.
- 32:05Hogs our own domestic Pig. So we, you know, have to go to
- 32:09the stores and stuff and get hamd.
- 32:12But-but-but, bore Wareham, was a very popular thing to consume in
- 32:19ancient times for you'll specifically.
- 32:21And it is a common Food item, for most of the modern you'll /
- 32:29Christmas meals right Christmas ham.
- 32:31You will ham but there's a reason for that.
- 32:36The hair hit reverse hair over Saga, perhaps our hair, hair
- 32:42VAR, Harry Potter, Saga, mentions, Oaths being sworn on
- 32:46bores, you know, the the the the you will board, the you will ham
- 32:50and are swearing Oaths on the bristles of the Boar that was
- 32:54cooked. So it's an important element
- 32:58back then as it is relived a bit now, maybe not for the same
- 33:01reasons. But again it's a custom that we
- 33:04see that it is is kind of relived we know one thing that,
- 33:18For the Germanic tribes with you will being a three day and three
- 33:21night long, you know, celebration is one slight
- 33:26exception, there were dramatic, tribes of the Old English
- 33:32people. That were a mixture of, you
- 33:34know, the Roman Britain, Celts, and some English people who had
- 33:40Germanic roots in and had migrated.
- 33:46But the anguish Heathens for the English people, I should say,
- 33:51celebrated both their you land and they mother's night which is
- 33:56more like a an Easter celebration.
- 33:58I think it came more from The Cult of the Roman Rhine land.
- 34:07So once again, some similarities gift-giving the ham, lots of
- 34:14feasting drinking, you know, and, you know, You can get
- 34:24taught, you can get, you can get really tied up in the minutiae,
- 34:29I guess of it all. If you really, really focused on
- 34:34trying to reconstruct your Heathen re and into the most
- 34:37accurate. Version based off of historical
- 34:41sources then I think you'll and I don't mean this in any sort
- 34:47of, I don't mean this in a bad way.
- 34:49You almost run the risk of losing sight again of the
- 34:54purpose. Why you're doing something?
- 34:56You know, are you just going through the motions?
- 34:58Because this is the way it was done 1,200 years ago or you
- 35:01doing it with purpose to build. Traditions for people to carry
- 35:09on now. You know, that's why it was done
- 35:11the way it was done back then is because it was tradition that
- 35:15was handed down to them and they were living those Traditions.
- 35:19I talked about this with Heidi and Roger Abney from the, the
- 35:25runestone heathens group up, there in Ohio, a couple of
- 35:28podcasts ago, right talking about how tradition is should be
- 35:32the preservation of fire. It's not this worship of Ashes.
- 35:35It's not something that is dead and gone and useless anymore
- 35:37that we should be focusing on it should be the things that are
- 35:40still burning still able to be kindled and breathing new life
- 35:46into those things, right? So again it nothing against
- 35:50historical heathens, I actually love learning, most of all this
- 35:55stuff from from some very you know, reputable sources and I
- 36:00say, you know, learn as much as you can.
- 36:02You know, you're going to find certain sources come Higher or
- 36:07lower on the on the recommendation pole, especially
- 36:09from some people and you can really get into again, you can
- 36:13get, I'm sorry, lost in the sauce.
- 36:16You know, get caught in the minutia of it, all in and lose
- 36:19sight of the purpose behind it. What is the purpose?
- 36:21What is your worldview? What are your, what are your
- 36:23people's worldview? What are the Foos?
- 36:26What are the Traditions? Whether customs of the people
- 36:27that you've come to tie your life to and with right?
- 36:32How have you set up those things in your You know, collectives,
- 36:40your groups doesn't really matter so much.
- 36:42At that point how it was done thousand years ago because
- 36:46that's how it worked for them. if we're trying to, Again,
- 36:53preserve that fire of tradition. I think that's a great place to
- 36:58start. I think it's great that we have
- 37:01such Scholars and people who are devoted to finding those answers
- 37:06and unraveling those Mysteries and uncovering, those concealed
- 37:10parts of history that have been buried for so long.
- 37:13You know, it's invaluable to have that kind of a devoted
- 37:17network of people to tap into and it's nowadays and in the
- 37:2121st century with the internet and, and so on and so forth,
- 37:24it's easier now than ever to really sing Teeth into some of
- 37:28this stuff. And if that's your thing, that's
- 37:30what, you know, that's your, that's your job, then.
- 37:33Go for it. I just, you know, when I first
- 37:39started to really focus on, My Heathen re and doing things that
- 37:46worked for me. It's I wanted to learn about the
- 37:49past so that way I could build something for myself and for the
- 37:52people closest and nearest and dearest to me for our future,
- 37:57you know, what is stuff that we can do now that as our tribe
- 38:03grows, and as we get new people that come into our tribe, that
- 38:06that when our bodies are dead and gone than the, you know,
- 38:09clearly Focus still here where you know, I am not clearly folk,
- 38:14you know, myself, you know, individual members, it really,
- 38:19really focus everybody. And then one individuals pass
- 38:23on, you know, the Legacy, the spirit of the tribe lives on the
- 38:29spirit of the people live on. Because it's, it's it's not tied
- 38:33to just one person. It's tied to the entirety the
- 38:36group, so you know, the Legacy continues and if you know, the
- 38:42way things that hurt Folk does works for us, that and it
- 38:46doesn't work for, you know, the next drive or Kinder, or
- 38:49whatever down the road, then that's fine.
- 38:51They're doing things their way. They're doing things that should
- 38:54hopefully be preserving the luck in the future of their tribe in
- 38:58their people. That's what it's about, you
- 39:02know, it's about finding that authenticity that that's deeply
- 39:06rooted purpose. And again, I believe it needs to
- 39:09be deeply rooted, but we can't get so stuck in the roots.
- 39:12We can't get so rootbound that we've lost daylight and we've
- 39:17now become stagnant and we can't grow anymore because there's,
- 39:21you know, we're you know, any plan, any tree that becomes root
- 39:24bound gets Tangled Up in itself, right?
- 39:26You think of a potted plant that starts growing So much that it
- 39:31can't. Grow anymore because it's
- 39:34contained into that small pot will becomes just a ball of
- 39:37roots. It doesn't have the opportunity
- 39:38to grow to get stunted needs room at need space.
- 39:41It needs an easy opportunity to Branch out to grow to see other
- 39:45things to feel other things to network, right?
- 39:49I feel like that's the way he even reworks.
- 39:51It's, you know, very basic in that, in that in that sense,
- 39:57there's, there's work to be done there.
- 39:58There's its, it doesn't just happen overnight, it doesn't
- 40:01just happen without work being put into it, but it's definitely
- 40:06there at its core, you know. So going back to it, all kind of
- 40:12wrapping it up. You know, this is the second to
- 40:15last podcast of the season. End of season 3.
