- 0:00Speaker 1: Plenty of you out there listening this morning may have
- 0:02Speaker 1: heard of Hoops for Health. If you haven't heard of
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hoops for Health, I'm sure that you've heard of My
- 0:07Speaker 1: next guest. His name is Timmy Duggan and he is
- 0:11Speaker 1: indeed the director of Hoops for Health. Good morning to.
- 0:15Speaker 2: You, Timmy, Good morning Katie.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Lovely to have you on the show. Mate. Now, Hoops
- 0:21Speaker 1: for Health twenty years this year.
- 0:25Speaker 2: That's it. Yeah, it's been a bit of a journey
- 0:28Speaker 2: and the big thing about it, you know, Aboriginal business.
- 0:31Speaker 2: We first started over in Cavs, but brought it back
- 0:33Speaker 2: home in the mid two thousands and the whole time,
- 0:38Speaker 2: you know, it's been mainly made up of volunteers to
- 0:41Speaker 2: be honest, you know that have kind of kept it
- 0:44Speaker 2: going along and youth workers and mentors and that kept
- 0:49Speaker 2: it ticking along.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Make twenty years is phenomenal for any you know, like
- 0:54Speaker 1: any business, any organization. But did you ever think when
- 0:58Speaker 1: you started it or when you got going all those
- 1:01Speaker 1: years ago, that it would become.
- 1:02Speaker 2: What it has? No, because it kind of evolves, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: it's evolved as we've gone along, and you know, people
- 1:13Speaker 2: get the misconception about Hoops for Health that it's just
- 1:15Speaker 2: a basketball program, where in fact it's more of a
- 1:19Speaker 2: social and emotional wellbeing program because we've got a whole
- 1:24Speaker 2: spectrum of programs and activities like going in you know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: we actually go into don Dale three times a week.
- 1:31Speaker 2: We also go into some adult rehabilitation facilities and a
- 1:36Speaker 2: lot of our work is done in remote northern territory
- 1:39Speaker 2: as well. So we happen to use the sport of basketball,
- 1:42Speaker 2: but it's not the be all and end all of it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It's more than that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but mate, you know, I think at the end
- 1:48Speaker 1: of the day, we all know where a lot of
- 1:50Speaker 1: us do know that sport can break down so many
- 1:52Speaker 1: barriers in so many different ways. And it sounds like
- 1:56Speaker 1: that is what it has done through Hoops for Health.
- 2:00Speaker 2: That's that's exactly what it's done. And if you look
- 2:02Speaker 2: at the history of Darwin as well, sport broke down
- 2:05Speaker 2: barriers and it was a it was a way to
- 2:08Speaker 2: show to show that you were equal with in terms
- 2:11Speaker 2: of human rights and those basic rights of you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: human being. So it has and it's been a good
- 2:19Speaker 2: vehicle for us to develop relationships with young people, with
- 2:23Speaker 2: staff the organization and our networks that we have across
- 2:26Speaker 2: the end as well. So yeah, now to me.
- 2:29Speaker 1: To anybody out there listening this morning who maybe doesn't
- 2:32Speaker 1: know a huge amount about what hoops for health, does
- 2:35Speaker 1: I know that you have? You've mentioned that. You know
- 2:37Speaker 1: that you guys go into don Dale, You're also go
- 2:40Speaker 1: into the adult correctional facility, you go out to some
- 2:43Speaker 1: of those communities. Talk us through what you do.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah, look, we have a we have a model that's
- 2:49Speaker 2: based on a bit of science, but it's also based
- 2:52Speaker 2: on evidence, and it's also based on sixty thousand years
- 2:55Speaker 2: of knowledge. And this program if the whole is to
- 3:00Speaker 2: engage the participants through some physical activity, through some basketball,
- 3:06Speaker 2: but also give them some learnings along the way around
- 3:09Speaker 2: how you can slow the mind down but get the
- 3:13Speaker 2: heart rate up. So you're getting a bit of a
- 3:15Speaker 2: bit of pitt satutical activity there. And then at the
- 3:19Speaker 2: end we bring them around in a circle just like
- 3:23Speaker 2: a lot of our mode have been doing for a
- 3:24Speaker 2: long time, and with the ability to reflect on what
- 3:28Speaker 2: the actually what you actually did in that session. So
- 3:32Speaker 2: we're bringing in all these components as science, there's evidence there,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and there's you know, we're using a culture that's been
- 3:39Speaker 2: around sixty thousand years and embedding this all into our program.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And but the main thing is we have a lot
- 3:45Speaker 2: of fun. So we get the kids moving and we've
- 3:49Speaker 2: got a couple of mascots who who who you know
- 3:52Speaker 2: going to schools and and they love it when they
- 3:54Speaker 2: see Hooper and Hoop are male and female mascots and
- 3:59Speaker 2: so yeah to paint of pitch. That does you get
- 4:01Speaker 2: if we went to a hoops for health session.
- 4:03Speaker 1: How wonderful. Now, Timmy, what are you doing to celebrate
- 4:06Speaker 1: twenty years? Mate?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, we got an event next Thursday night and
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think it's still available for the next couple of
- 4:14Speaker 2: days at Teewee, So we'll get a nice, nice meal
- 4:17Speaker 2: and we've got some entertainment on the night. We've got
- 4:19Speaker 2: a few of our guests that have been involved with
- 4:22Speaker 2: the program over the last twenty years, you know, including
- 4:25Speaker 2: three time world champion Anthony Mundane. We've got lera logan's
- 4:29Speaker 2: who for basketball people in the eighties and nineties, he
- 4:33Speaker 2: was one of the greatest players in Australians and Australian Olympians.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So we're going to celebrate it with an event next week.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You know, you can go on the event right and
- 4:44Speaker 2: just type in Hoopsvale's twentieth anniversary. Look, we encourage organizations,
- 4:49Speaker 2: individuals who want to know more about it to come along,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and we're going to launch a report that we've did
- 4:55Speaker 2: with Klinder's University of our impact of the last twenty years.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So they've compiled it, they've evaluated it, and we're really
- 5:04Speaker 2: excited about that. And we've also partnered with Clenders to
- 5:09Speaker 2: increase this health leadership amongst our young people as well,
- 5:12Speaker 2: looking at innovative ways to increase awareness around health and lifestyle.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So a bit of a saying we have is more
- 5:20Speaker 2: than basketball and more than medicine. So we're really really
- 5:23Speaker 2: excited about that partnership. But yeah, yeah, keep on you,
- 5:29Speaker 2: welcome to good on you.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And I know that Sarah from here at Mix one
- 5:33Speaker 1: O four nine is going to be m seeing the
- 5:35Speaker 1: event for you. But tell us again, where can people
- 5:37Speaker 1: still buy tickets if they're canning? Because I reckon, there's
- 5:40Speaker 1: going to be people listening this morning who think, do
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know what I'd love to go along to that?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, look, you get an event, right, Hoops for health,
- 5:48Speaker 2: and that's with a number four, So Hoops number four
- 5:50Speaker 2: Health twentieth anniversary dinner event. Right, you can just click
- 5:55Speaker 2: a couple of clicks and you're in. You're at our dinner.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Wonderful.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It's going to be more than just speeches, which are important,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and a few announcements of our alignments and partnerships, but
- 6:07Speaker 2: it's going to be a lot of entertainment on the
- 6:09Speaker 2: night as well.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Good on you with us, Good on you, Timmy and mate.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Good on you on twenty years as well. I know
- 6:16Speaker 1: that it is, you know, it's a hard slog doing
- 6:19Speaker 1: something like this, and it sounds as though it's been
- 6:22Speaker 1: incredibly rewarding for you and the volunteers and everybody that's
- 6:27Speaker 1: been involved. But congratulations to you on twenty years. It's
- 6:30Speaker 1: amazing stuff.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, Katie. Thanks thanks for the opportunity to
- 6:35Speaker 2: talk about our program as well.
- 6:36Speaker 1: No worries at all. We'll catch up with you again
- 6:38Speaker 1: soon and I hope that you know that anniversary dinner
- 6:41Speaker 1: is a fantastic success. Good on you, Timmy, thank you,
- 6:45Speaker 1: thank you.
