- 0:01Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 0:04Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yes, indeed. Nirvana there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show
- 0:10Speaker 2: this Wednesday evening. Now, the fellas have been waxing lyrical
- 0:14Speaker 2: the last couple of days about a theatre show that
- 0:17Speaker 2: they went to see.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Cirque Alice. Yeah.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And they both went to see it on a Friday night.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Both of them gave it rave reviews. Five stars out
- 0:27Speaker 2: of five from recollection, fellas.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I will take it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We've got two of the stars from that very show,
- 0:38Speaker 2: Cirque Alice. Dizzy and Layla, how are you going?
- 0:41Speaker 4: We're good.
- 0:42Speaker 3: You speak first, Layla. Yeah, I'm good.
- 0:44Speaker 5: I'm so great to be here.
- 0:47Speaker 4: So we've got Layla and Dizzy. So Layla, you are Alice.
- 0:51Speaker 5: Yes.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Dizzy, you are the Mad Hatter.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I am.
- 0:53Speaker 4: First things first, Alice, magnificent voice.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Aw, thank you.
- 0:57Speaker 5: I really appreciate that.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Because I've seen a Cirque du Soleil show before. It
- 1:00Speaker 4: was one of the ones in the tent. It was
- 1:02Speaker 4: in the round and there was no sort of singing
- 1:05Speaker 4: and performing and stuff. And then you came out and
- 1:07Speaker 4: had this amazing operatic voice. And I was like, holy cow.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Awesome, thanks.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I mean, does it take much sort of warming up
- 1:14Speaker 4: and things like that?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:15Speaker 6: It does take a lot of warming up. I think
- 1:17Speaker 6: even this morning I was trying to get my voice
- 1:19Speaker 6: to start happening today and it was taking like two hours.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I was like, ah.
- 1:23Speaker 4: What do you do for that?
- 1:25Speaker 6: You've got to steam. Sometimes vocalists use a vocal humidifier.
- 1:30Speaker 6: There's a vocal mist and stuff.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Some people do straw work.
- 1:33Speaker 6: But it's just a lot of SOVT stuff to warm
- 1:36Speaker 6: up your voice.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I used to do five cigarettes and a couple of whiskeys.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Yeah, that's pretty good too.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And I used to find that that really loosened up
- 1:45Speaker 2: the larynx.
- 1:45Speaker 5: And when he sang, it sounded horrendous. So I suggest
- 1:49Speaker 5: you don't try that. Dizzy, tell us about the show, man,
- 1:52Speaker 5: for people that don't know anything about it. give us
- 1:54Speaker 5: a bit of an explainer.
- 1:56Speaker 3: So you mentioned it's uh you saw the circus slave
- 1:58Speaker 3: version inside a tent the producers have basically done a
- 2:01Speaker 3: runway catwalk with a big round stage on the stage
- 2:05Speaker 3: but it's a lot smaller so it's about the size
- 2:08Speaker 3: of this table what is this maybe 15 feet yeah
- 2:11Speaker 3: 15 feet round and then they've got vips that sit
- 2:14Speaker 3: on the stage.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Wow i wasn't invited up there does he i don't
- 2:18Speaker 5: know what they're pretty expensive seats.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I believe but i believe they're all sold out um
- 2:23Speaker 3: But sitting there, you're just immersed in like seeing the
- 2:28Speaker 3: sweat and the actual, because nowadays we're watching stuff on phones.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Is it real?
- 2:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Seeing these guys.
- 2:35Speaker 4: You're up in the action.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You're part of it. For the producers and the directors
- 2:39Speaker 3: pushing us to be on stage for the finale trick
- 2:42Speaker 3: of every single act that they do, like we'll come
- 2:45Speaker 3: out as a whole company and just stand and watch
- 2:47Speaker 3: the finale final trick. It's death defying and we have
- 2:51Speaker 3: to stand there with a straight face and when they
- 2:53Speaker 3: change just a slight bit, it's just like, This is it. Like,
- 2:57Speaker 3: you've seen some of the acts that they're doing.
- 2:58Speaker 4: So that's the bizarre thing is you all get into
- 3:01Speaker 4: the Civic Theatre, you're all sitting in the tiered seating,
- 3:03Speaker 4: and then there are people that are sitting on tables
- 3:04Speaker 4: literally one metre away from the action. There were four
- 3:07Speaker 4: Kiwi dudes sitting to the right of stage on the
- 3:10Speaker 4: first night, and they were on the beers, and I
- 3:14Speaker 4: feel like they didn't realise what they were in for.
- 3:15Speaker 4: They had the biggest eyes, the biggest expressions. It was incredible.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 4: And you guys are up on stage feet away from
- 3:22Speaker 4: these people doing the most bizarre stuff. Like, tell me.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I think I remember these guys and they were asked
- 3:28Speaker 3: to keep their seatbelts on. It was that kind of situation.
- 3:32Speaker 3: They were freaking. I remember that.
- 3:34Speaker 4: It was brilliant because it was so expressive. But Mike
- 3:36Speaker 4: and I had the same experience, which is we went there,
- 3:38Speaker 4: we watched it. It was amazing, very entertaining, beautiful singing,
- 3:41Speaker 4: good performing. Very stressful. Super stressful. I'm like, please let
- 3:46Speaker 4: everyone get through this okay. Do you guys feel the
- 3:49Speaker 4: same watching the performances around you?
- 3:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Well, that's where I come in, where I'm the comedic relief.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Yes, right.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I come in, what, 15 to 20 minutes into the show?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 3: So the audience are already begging for, like, let me
- 4:02Speaker 3: just breathe. Yeah, 100%. So my job is so easy. Like,
- 4:06Speaker 3: they're just begging to relax.
- 4:14Speaker 5: You know how good the Hodaki Big Show podcast is?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I love those fellas.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Backbone.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, backbone.
- 4:22Speaker 5: You get it.
- 4:23Speaker 3: You've got to get around the live radio show.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Oh, you?
- 4:26Speaker 3: When's that?
- 4:27Speaker 5: Four to seven weekdays on Radio Hodaki and iHeartRadio.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Backbone.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Nice.
- 4:35Speaker 1: The Hodaki Big Show podcast.
- 4:37Speaker 5: For the people at home, what you're watching is different
- 4:39Speaker 5: forms of acrobats. There's people hanging from the ceiling. There's
- 4:43Speaker 5: people on roller skates going a billion miles an hour.
- 4:46Speaker 5: There's people... they're not tethered to anything. I don't know
- 4:49Speaker 5: how it gets past the safety laws of the country, but,
- 4:53Speaker 5: you know, if these people fall, it's all over. And
- 4:56Speaker 5: so it is super, super, super stressful. It's a weird
- 4:59Speaker 5: thing because you think, well, is this entertaining? Because I
- 5:02Speaker 5: think I'm about to watch somebody die. But then you
- 5:05Speaker 5: come out as a hatter and it is a relief.
- 5:07Speaker 5: You're pulling people out of the crowd. You're mocking them.
- 5:09Speaker 5: You're mocking yourself. And it is a huge relief. But
- 5:12Speaker 5: as the show goes on, it gets more and more
- 5:15Speaker 5: stressful because And I'm not sure how much of it is.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I don't think we're selling tickets by saying this.
- 5:20Speaker 5: No, we've been talking about it for days. But it's
- 5:23Speaker 5: incredible because then you get the payoff at the end.
- 5:26Speaker 5: But what's amazing about it is what I'm interested in
- 5:30Speaker 5: is how dangerous is it? Because there's got to be
- 5:33Speaker 5: some selling from the performer's point of view as well, right?
- 5:36Speaker 5: To make it seem like it's much more dangerous than
- 5:38Speaker 5: it is, the acting as well as the skill level
- 5:42Speaker 5: is just phenomenal.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Well, I will say with the directors, the producers that
- 5:48Speaker 3: book these acts, they've gone, right, you do that chiffon.
- 5:51Speaker 3: You fly from the ceiling and do that. We've seen
- 5:53Speaker 3: that before. We don't want it. We want something that
- 5:55Speaker 3: you've never seen. Like the guys that are doing the
- 5:57Speaker 3: flying elements, you haven't seen the way they're gripping each
- 6:01Speaker 3: other by the most unsafe manner.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Yes.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And then the hand, you know, everyone's seen somebody balance
- 6:08Speaker 3: on somebody's hands. We don't want to see that. So
- 6:11Speaker 3: let's make it even more, like, impressive epic is the word. Yes.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Well, that's what sort of de Soleil, as I know it,
- 6:19Speaker 2: is sort of known for is this kind of magnificent physicality.
- 6:23Speaker 2: The first time I met Mike, he was doing trapeze.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And I remember watching him and just going.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Oh, my word. It was amazing.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It must just take hours and hours and hours of practice.
- 6:36Speaker 5: I was just a natural. And sometimes you come across
- 6:39Speaker 5: those people, don't you, that are just natural performers. I'm lying,
- 6:41Speaker 5: by the way. But when it comes to that, I
- 6:48Speaker 5: guess what I've probably seen three or four of these
- 6:51Speaker 5: shows over the over the last few years. How do
- 6:54Speaker 5: you guys and I know this would be annoying because
- 6:56Speaker 5: you've probably been asked a billion times. But how do
- 6:57Speaker 5: you find your way into the circus?
- 7:02Speaker 6: That's crazy because I'm a musical theatre performer and I've
- 7:05Speaker 6: done music my whole life. I've grown up in a
- 7:07Speaker 6: very musical family. So I had no idea what it
- 7:10Speaker 6: was going to be like being in a circus show.
- 7:12Speaker 6: And it is just like just next level entertaining. Like
- 7:16Speaker 6: you just absolutely are gasping for air. Like honestly, I'm
- 7:20Speaker 6: on stage with these people every night and they're just out.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Of this world talented.
- 7:24Speaker 6: Like it is just absolutely amazing the strength that they
- 7:26Speaker 6: have and just like the love that they have for
- 7:29Speaker 6: their art and their acting. Like, it's just beyond what
- 7:33Speaker 6: you can imagine. So, like, I just had no idea
- 7:36Speaker 6: what I was getting myself into with these guys, and
- 7:39Speaker 6: it has been a crazy ride, that's for sure.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Well, it is, right? Because, obviously, you're a performer with
- 7:44Speaker 4: a beautiful voice. Dizzy, you're very comedic. You know, you're
- 7:47Speaker 4: up there having fun, making people laugh. And then you've
- 7:49Speaker 4: got a guy whose skill is, first of all, being
- 7:51Speaker 4: ripped to shreds.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 4: And hanging upside down with something in his mouth, holding
- 7:56Speaker 4: another performer in her mouth, spinning wildly on, like... It's ridiculous.
- 8:01Speaker 6: It's like nothing like you've ever seen before.
- 8:03Speaker 4: No, exactly. And when we say it's stressful, it's in
- 8:05Speaker 4: the best way. It's like not often you go into
- 8:07Speaker 4: a theatre. In fact, I associate theatre traditionally, no offence, with, oh, God,
- 8:11Speaker 4: I hope this is good. I hope I don't fall asleep,
- 8:12Speaker 4: that sort of stuff. Instead, you walk out of there
- 8:14Speaker 4: like you've been on a roller coaster and you've been
- 8:16Speaker 4: watching a movie at the same time. Like, it's bizarre.
- 8:19Speaker 4: You guys must absolutely love doing it, right?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it's awesome. It's amazing. And just the idea, the
- 8:25Speaker 3: story between– behind Alice in Wonderland. Everyone's, you know, seen
- 8:29Speaker 3: the movie or read the book. So coming in, you're going, okay,
- 8:32Speaker 3: we're going to see Alice. And then she comes out.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 3: She's going to, she's singing, which is incredible. Then the
- 8:38Speaker 3: Tweedles come out. Yeah. They're in the show. Do you know, there's,
- 8:41Speaker 3: Every performer has a character and you just relate to
- 8:44Speaker 3: that and then next minute they blow your minds.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Tweedledee and Tweedledum were both jacked.
- 8:49Speaker 2: It was crazy. And, Dizian, I think you made a
- 8:53Speaker 2: really good point. And that's the magic of theatre. You know,
- 8:57Speaker 2: these days we're all on our phones.
- 8:59Speaker 3: But the.
- 9:01Speaker 2: The great thing about theatre is the sort of live
- 9:04Speaker 2: element to it. You know, you're in the building, you're
- 9:06Speaker 2: feeling the atmosphere. You know, Mike and I go to
- 9:10Speaker 2: a few plays and, you know, it's a very different
- 9:12Speaker 2: beast as opposed to watching something on your phone, you
- 9:15Speaker 2: know what I mean? Actually seeing live performers.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 3: For me, I've... Realise, word of mouth, everyone's talking about
- 9:25Speaker 3: the show afterwards. It just says it in ticket sales.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I think we're up to like 90% capacity.
- 9:31Speaker 5: And so it should be. I really left there and
- 9:34Speaker 5: it makes you feel so positive about the human race.
- 9:38Speaker 5: The things that are possible, the amount of training that
- 9:40Speaker 5: people put into their art, as you say, it's so inspiring.
- 9:44Speaker 5: And my seven-year-old daughter was sitting there with me. Her
- 9:47Speaker 5: greatest passion in life is eating ice cream. And she
- 9:50Speaker 5: had an ice cream and she was sitting there and
- 9:52Speaker 5: her mouth, she was holding it in front of her
- 9:54Speaker 5: and her mouth was open and her ice cream melted down.
- 9:59Speaker 5: That was how it was. amazing it was. You guys
- 10:01Speaker 5: are so incredible. that you made her forget she had
- 10:03Speaker 5: an ice cream. And I can't tell you how big
- 10:05Speaker 5: a feat that is.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that's successful.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Dizzy and Layla from Sir Callis, thank you so much
- 10:11Speaker 2: for coming in.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Thank you for having us.
- 10:13Speaker 2: All the very best for the rest of the season.
- 10:15Speaker 2: It sounds like you're going great guns anyway.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Yeah, and if you'd like to go and see it
- 10:18Speaker 4: as well, it's on tonight, tomorrow night, Friday, two on
- 10:22Speaker 4: Saturday and two on Sunday. Good luck to you guys.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Big shift ahead. But if you'd like tickets, go to ticketmaster.co.nz. Beautiful.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Thanks for coming in, team.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Thank you, guys.
- 10:32Speaker 1: The Hodaki Beat Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 10:35Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hodaki.
