[upbeat rock music] Right on, right on. You know what that means.
• 0:14
It's Full Spectrum Cycling time here at the Riverwest studio at Everyday Cycles, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Earth, uh, Solar System, et cetera. Milky Way. Milky Way. Yeah, we got, uh, JK in the studio. Hey, hey.
• 0:30
Tony Burger right across from me. Hello. And today, Bill from Rushmore Records down Bay View way is joining us- Woo... to give us a little, uh- Hey, everybody... South Side stuff. Yeah. [laughs] Right on, Bill.
• 0:40
How you doing? I'm thick with South Side stuff. [laughs] [laughs] I'm doing well. How are you guys? Doing, doing good. Yeah, uh, a little, little change in the weather for the cyclists on the table here. Yeah.
• 0:51
Hopefully we'll- You can hear it in my [sniffs] sniffle. Mm. [laughs] Well, we had a record, almost a record day the other day, 87 or something degrees, like a degree short of a record- Hot day... and then, and now this.
• 1:04
  58. And I found my jacket. And rainy. [laughs] And found my jacket- And windy... on the first try. [laughs] I was like, "Yeah! Oh." Yeah, it was wicked windy coming over here, for sure. [laughs] Yeah. I agree. Right on.
• 1:18
So, uh, we got some stuff going on today besides talking to Bill. We got, uh, Zito's gonna give us a jungle cross update, and, uh, Mr. Gary Gomez Lake from, uh, fatbike.com calling in later on. Fat-bike.
• 1:33
Or as he likes to call it, fatcock.com. [laughs] Gnome a-saying. I, since the Sunday celebration of, uh, Craig's demise, I, I don't have a whole lot of memory between then and now still. [laughs] What about you?
• 1:48
How you doing? Oh, right on. It was a good, good ride down there, kind of preparing for this kinda misty- That was a wet one... shitty, sh- the Shitty Mistys.
• 1:58
Yes, that was a- They were my, one of my bands that I'll ever make. Shitty Mistys? The Shitty Mistys. Nice. [laughs] We could, we could have- 'Cause I ride through enough of this... trademark Michael Jock.
• 2:07
Yeah, let's put a pin in this one. [laughs] We could have summed up that weather as moist. Moist. Yeah, you had to go west, didn't you? I did. Ha ha.
• 2:14
West and then all the way back east again, and I was moist all the way from head to toe. [laughs] Bet that made the old, uh, homestead happy, huh? Oh, yeah. [laughs] I was thrilled.
• 2:25
And made it down to Rushmore on Saturday for the Brand Bjork show. Yeah, that was fun. That was, that was a lot of fun. That was- That was a in-store performance? Yeah. He came, uh... It, it was pretty cool.
• 2:34
I think it was the only one he did on this tour, and, uh, he just approached us, and we were like, "Yeah, we used to do in stores all the time, and then video games got popular and kids- [laughs]...
• 2:44
stopped supporting live music, and now we got our stuff on casters and nowhere to go." [laughs] So we jumped at it when he, when he offered it. It was great.
• 2:54
Um, maybe just, uh, give everybody a little heads-up on what Rushmore Records is, because, uh, if you're not from Milwaukee, you may not know.
• 3:02
But, uh- Uh, man, Rushmore is a little local record shop on the corner of KK and Potter in, uh, Bay View. We've been... Dan, my business partner, and I have been doing it for a long time. Um,
• 3:19
sell vinyl, CDs. We got cassettes. We got eight-tracks in the basement if you want them. [laughs] Um, but it's, uh, be- it's fun. It's not a... It's like probably running a bike shop. You wanna get rich? Don't do it.
• 3:32
Right. [laughs] Like- Yeah. But if- But you wanna meet a lot of freaks and have a blast, it's, uh, it's, it's a great calling. Speaking of freaks, we're gonna call Zito here in just a minute, but, uh- Yeah.
• 3:44
[laughs] Yeah... so, uh, we'll, we'll talk to him about this, um, this jungle cross thing, but when we, uh, are done with Zito, we'll talk about some of the stuff you're doing with bikes as well, so. Yeah.
• 3:53
But I, I hardly, uh... You know, uh, weekends are tough when you run a record store, and last year, I made a point to go to the Urban Jungle Cross.
• 4:02
And if you're, you're probably familiar if you're listening to this podcast. This is my first podcast, by the way. I'm pretty stoked about this. Woohoo! Yeah. Podcast virgin. Yeah.
• 4:10
Just like being in a radio station, man. Feel my nipples? Woo! For sure. I, uh- Like that. [laughs] But yeah, if you haven't been, man, it's so fucking cool. It's just the most righteous afternoon.
• 4:23
Everybody's pulling in the same direction. There's... It, it's... I can't say enough about how much fun I had last fall. I, I just have- Sweet... I have to interject- So dirty... with a question. Are you a WMSC DJ? I am.
• 4:35
Yeah, I am. I thought you sounded familiar. [laughs] I'm hearing you in the headphones, and I'm like, "Wait a minute. I hear this all the time." It's great. I, I wanna be like, "Fuck, shit" as much as I can. Yeah.
• 4:43
Damn right you are. [laughs] I was so happy when I heard somebody say shitty earlier. [laughs] I was like, "Yeah." [laughs] "Now you're talking real." But that's- That's damn exciting. This is pleasant.
• 4:53
This is- [laughs] Let me tell you another motherfucking thing that happened. Did you just, did you have the motherfucking call in for- [laughs]...
• 5:00
for Gary, or for the, uh, show coming up for Thievery Corp and- Uh, yes, I did. Me and one other- Yeah, my wife is caller five. Goddammit, you never answered my call. Oh. That's, I was calling from here. That was shitty.
• 5:10
[laughs] Right there. [laughs] I'm like, "Please let me win." I, um, there'll be more coming away. The tickets are- Right? We miss it all the time. The, yeah, there's, uh...
• 5:17
I know for a fact there's gonna be more given away. That's gonna be a great show. I hope so, yeah. If you have not seen Immortal Girlfriend live, great couple of guys. Great couple of guys.
• 5:27
I am super stoked for Stereo Lab this fall, man. I'm seeing them too. Never seen them. Me neither. So stoked. I went to see them this summer at Pitchfork, and it turned into a giant fuck story. Oh. It got rained...
• 5:39
We took our bikes down and parked and rode there, and we got there just as a giant storm broke, and we were told the festival was over, and- Oh, man...
• 5:49
turns out it wasn't, and we were in a bar downtown when we found out it wasn't, and we got back in time just to hear them close out their set. Oh, son of a bitch. It was a bummer, but- That is total bummer...
• 6:00
that's, uh, that's my old guy though, 'cause they didn't put it on their website. Um, I found out about it through Instagram, but I think they fucking tweeted out- I just, Twitter, I mean, is there any- It's the end...
• 6:12
bigger indictment of Twitter than what's going on every [laughs] fucking day now? [laughs] Yeah. It's my place for news. Jesus. If, if you post on Twitter, does that make you a Twat- Yeah, I think it does...
• 6:25
I think it does. A Twatter. A Twatter. I'm just- All right... I'm just the Twitter shitter. I just read. I do not participate. I, I'm making a, I'm dialing right now. Yeah, call that freak up. [laughs] I'm dialing.
• 6:35
Right on. This is the magic of radio, boys. Hello? H- hello? Tokyo? Hi. Is that you? Hello. Yep. Hey, folks, uh, we dialed Mr.
• 6:46
Chris Zito, so I know who it is, otherwise, uh, if he was calling in, I'd be like, "Uh, hello, listener, welcome to the show. Who do we have on the line?" Hi. [laughs] Is this Luns?
• 6:58
[laughs] That's a very- That's what I thought... pretty good Luns impression. That was a pretty good Luns.
• 7:04
Hey, man, we were just, uh, doing a little rapping about the Urban Jungle Cross here before we got to talk to you, and wanted to get you on the show here- Awesome...
• 7:12
and tell us a little bit about what you got planned for the folks. Well, we got the standard issue. We're just using some space that doesn't get used and is there, and, and, uh, we're gonna have a fun course.
• 7:25
It's gonna be gravelly, or actually, most of it's undercover, which is nice. But, uh, there'll be some grass and some gravel and some dirt roads, some hills, some whiskey and some beer. Hey.
• 7:38
Hopefully we can get the fried chicken, the fried chicken handouts worked out this time. That would be sweet.
• 7:43
Yeah, last time that kinda turned into a shit show [laughs] 'cause, uh, I went to- Yeah, you had to pick them up, right? And they were like, "What chicken?" [laughs] And then it was gonna take them too long to make it.
• 7:52
I went across the street and the lady's like, "Oh, yeah, we'd love to sell that much." I'm like, "Well, how much to make it?" And she's like, "Like, an hour." I'm like, "Nope. Sorry." But, uh, I dunno. Yeah.
• 8:01
No, I think I'm gonna see if, uh, the Fohl's Family Kitchen can't do something in the third wa- in the, in the Public Market where the start is. Oh, right on.
• 8:09
That would be real helpful to have it handy there right on the, uh- Oh, yeah... on the thoroughfare. Yeah, so we'll just take it over with us.
• 8:16
So you know- So I'm actually waiting to hear back from Casey Fohl's on that... right on. Um, we, what da- Yeah... what's the date of the event? The date is Sunday, October 13th. We'll do registration from
• 8:29
10:00 to shortly after 11:00, and then shortly after 11:00, uh, at the, uh, Public Market Fish Market Tiki Bar. Tiki bar. Oh, yeah. [laughs] And then, uh, shortly after 11:00, we'll do group ride to the course.
• 8:41
We're gonna show everyone the course. We're gonna do a little community service and pick up some garbage. Uh, registration will be, uh, posted on the Facebook page.
• 8:49
I think it's gonna be, like, 10 bucks and a pair of warm socks that we're gonna give to the, one of the homeless shelters or homeless organizations here in the city. Nice. Right on. Good to help the folks out.
• 9:01
So, 'cause we're kind of in- intrud- intruding a little bit upon the land where they- Tent City... are currently living. Mm-hmm. Intensity. Yeah. Intent cities. Intensity Intent cities.
• 9:12
[laughs] So you, you- In- in- intensity... you may have noticed, we got, uh, Mr. Billy from Rushmore in the studio today. He made it over here. Hi, Chris. Oh, I didn't know that. Hello, Bill. Here I am. What's happening?
• 9:24
I was just waxing, uh- Sounds good. I know. You guys have actually got a real radio personality on your show. [laughs] And it's his first podcast. He's real. Yeah, it's my first podcast. He got to say, "Fuck," already.
• 9:34
Yep. [laughs] Oh, nice. All right. It's good. Yeah. Hey. I was just telling everybody what an awesome time I had, and I brought out a little buddy of mine who, uh, had a really shitty year last year.
• 9:47
He lost both his parents and he's kinda going, like... And I took him to the Jungle Cross- Yeah, Declan. I know Declan... and it was, he had the best time. It was... I took pictures of all the trash derailleurs.
• 9:59
There were a couple of those. Oh, yeah. [laughs] Oh, yeah. So much fun. It was a mud fest last year. It was a mud fest. I don't think it's gonna be quite that bad this year, but there's clay down there.
• 10:09
Yeah, there, there's gonna be some mud. I mean, we just went the other day and it wasn't raining hard and it was kind of muddy. But, uh- Yeah, I didn't have the right tires for the, for the purpose... yeah, it'll be fun.
• 10:17
And you know, the, the fun, that's the fun thing about Jungle Cross is kids like Declan can come out. Uh, you know, the whole Altman family came out and did it one year, the mom and dad and two kids and family dog.
• 10:27
Uh, we get- Oh, yeah. Yeah... pro racers like Heidi Betka who come out and do it, and, uh, Lindsay Cree, and there's all these... It's a, it's a wide, wide, uh, expanse of riders and skill.
• 10:41
I remember, uh, I remember Rocket being on that course a couple times, the, the smaller of the- Yeah... was he the smaller or the taller? Yeah, I've seen her a couple times. Yeah. The, the boy. That's the taller.
• 10:49
Rocket, Rocket's the older- Bodie's the little one. Yeah. Yeah, right, okay. Bodie. Yeah. Yeah, Rocket's great. Rocket's the older one, and- This summer I rolled up on him in Glendale.
• 10:57
I just happened to look over and there's John in his bright yellow Cali truck, and Rocket's sitting in the passenger seat, and I'm like, "What's happening, buddy?"
• 11:07
And he lifts up his arm in a little baby cast that I knew- Oh. [laughs]... he got from wiping out racing. [laughs] Yeah. I'm like, "Yeah, buddy." [laughs] He's getting raised the right way. A little rad kid.
• 11:16
Welcome to the tribe. [laughs] Yeah, no doubt. Yeah. He'll be breaking bottles in no time. [laughs] Cool, man. So what else should we know about Jungle Cross?
• 11:28
Yeah, we, actually, Jeremy Clark and I met with some people at the Harley Davidson Museum. They're wanting to, uh, maybe do something there coming up.
• 11:36
So we're waiting to hear back from the powers that be there, and, uh, hopefully we'll have something maybe by the end of the month, uh- Nice... at the Harley Museum as well. This Jungle Cross is gonna be, uh, flat out.
• 11:48
You've, well, you've seen z- most of what we're gonna be using for the course, and, uh, we will, uh... It'll be fun.
• 11:54
It'll be fun and fast and, uh, quick, and we're gonna do a little, a community service for the homeless, 'cause we're, we're gonna be partaking on some of the turf where they're living, and, uh, it should be a good time.
• 12:06
Very good, man. But it's also, it's f- super fun, and it's, uh, it's cheap, and it's family-friendly, and you don't have to be a- Yep... gnarly ass racer- Nope... to do it No, it's, it's not about winning Yeah...
• 12:19
it's about having fun. Just show up, have fun. Right on, dude. Yeah, exactly. Drink beer. Well, thanks for taking time to do this with- Well, all right, I'm going to play bingo. Yeah. [laughs] Be, uh, enjoy.
• 12:28
Thank you for taking time to talk to us. And Zito was his name-o. All right. Thank you for the, for the... [beeps] Beep. All right, man. See ya. We'll talk to you soon. Get your cheek off the phone.
• 12:38
I'll see you all Friday night. Yep. All right. Adios. All right, I'll talk to you soon. Later. Is he hitting Stereolab too? [sighs] I don't know. Uh, you just run into him- Yeah... on a random corner or whatever. Yep.
• 12:50
Yep. See those white glasses coming. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. It's like, "Yeah, hey Zito. What's happening?" Cool. Uh, hey, what, what... Where the hell is that? Here it is. [bell ringing] Oh. Top of the hill, boys.
• 13:03
Top of the hill. New beer. New beer this week. [laughs] New beer this... I think this is the first time we've had this beer on this podcast. It's the first time we've had it on this show, for sure. Yeah.
• 13:09
Uh, Founder's Mosaic Promise. Single hop ale. It's not bad at all. No, it's, uh, pretty tasty. It is a flavorful- Yes... single hop ale. 5.5%. 50 IBUs. 50 IBUs. Buxom redhead on the label. Yeah.
• 13:26
Yeah, it does have a good label. Yeah. I, it, well, I'm a s- I'm not a sucker for labels. There's so many good beers out there. Oh.
• 13:31
If you don't have a good label, probably won't even get a- Sir, last week's label was still- That was pretty rad... that was pretty rad. Radicats. Radicats. That's- I was tempted. I was tempted.
• 13:39
There was a Fantasy Factory, what is it? Fruit Punch- Yeah, that's their new one... Fantasy Factory. But I didn't want to roll the dice on that. [laughs] Yeah. Well, that was the thing. It'd be nice.
• 13:49
I was gonna do the gose. It's always nice. I know people are gonna go, "You, I, you- Yeah, I would-... you already said I'd be sober tonight." I'd have beat you with a chumpa.
• 13:56
[laughs] You showed up with a damn sour in this place. All right. Who needs a refill? Uh, I stole yours. I shall return. So talk, talk amongst ourselves. Talk amongst yourselves. So- You might as well grab me one...
• 14:08
what else you seen? I have nothing in my hands. I, I'm, I'm gonna see Stereolab, and I'm super stoked to see Sleater Kinney again. Uh, yeah, last time I saw them, uh, RZA opened. Lizzo. Lizzo.
• 14:20
Why am I drawing a mental blank right now? I've had one beer. At the Riverside? Yeah. Yep. Remember, years ago. And I saw them for New Year's one year in Chicago.
• 14:28
I, I can heartily, uh, endorse [can opening] Beat Street, which is the day before the Urban Jungle Cross. There's a band playing from Indianapolis called SERVICE, all caps.
• 14:41
Yeah, you were- And holy shit, man, they were... They played the Baby Bash. We were super stoked.
• 14:47
We got to bring them to town for the first time, and it's, it features our friend Jilly, who's, who was formerly in a band called We Are Hex- Oh, yeah... out of Indianapolis. And, uh,
• 14:58
she is the baddest motherfucker that you will see. Bring, tell every lady you know to go see her, 'cause she is... It's for real like seeing Iggy Pop or Mick Jagger or PJ Harvey, you know? Like, any...
• 15:14
She's just f- full of piss and vinegar and- Nice. Service? SERVICE, all caps. They're playing for free at, uh, Beat Street. Don't miss that show, 'cause they are...
• 15:26
She married the, the drummer from John Spencer Blues Explosion, Russell Simmins, and, uh, there's a, there's a bunch of old punk heads. It's a five-piece, and it, the, if you like noise and, uh, aggression and- [laughs]
• 15:42
I do. Yeah. Like, go, go, Gogo's Low's on my list for- It's like a maelstrom. For- Yeah... for loud, noisy bands. Yeah. Well, We Are Hex, I thought they, didn't they open for DeCrayson? Yeah. I think. Yeah. One of those.
• 15:54
And they, they were gonna play the last, uh, the last time they were gonna play in Milwaukee, they broke up right before and they didn't make it. Okay. Okay. And that was kind of a bummer, but, uh. Yeah.
• 16:04
It, I, I was trying to put a, like- Yeah, for real. I mean, don't, don't miss E- uh, Ser- I keep wanting to call them Entrance Band, but that's wrong. Service. Not The Service. Service. Huh.
• 16:14
Uh, and there's gonna be a debut of our buddy, uh, Johnny's, I'm sorry, Richie's new punk band, and I can't remember their name. But, uh, hopefully...
• 16:23
They've had really bad luck at Beat Street with weather, so I'm hoping this year it's gonna be solid for them, 'cause they work hard at it. They're good people. And where is Beat Street?
• 16:33
I'm, I'm ignorant to the Bayview area. It is, uh, it is, for people that are unfamiliar with the Bayview area, on the corner of Russell and Wentworth. There is the Cactus Club, Groppy's, Club G.
• 16:45
It's a pretty big intersection if you're getting off of 794 going south. Uh, and it laps, it, it, uh, heads north on Wentworth to Goodkind, which is one block to the north. Okay.
• 16:59
And then it goes, it's just an L-shaped fest- it's a little fest. Nice. Very comfortable, very cool. Uh-huh. Uh, super chill, but yeah. And, and, uh, there's puddlers right down the block.
• 17:12
It, it's a, it's a good little spot to hang out. Nice. Nice. Right on. It's also, it's an outdoor thing. Yeah. And it's, it's free. A little bit of everything.
• 17:17
I'm telling you about a free show that's gonna peel your ears. [laughs] Free show. Come from Madison. Yeah. Come from Chicago. For sure, yeah. Come from Philadelphia.
• 17:25
Don't miss, and if you're coming from the west- Come from Minneapolis... ride your bike. It's easy. [laughs] Yes, it is. It's a great bike ride.
• 17:30
Speaking of, uh, people riding their bikes all over hell and back, have, have you been b- following Jason at all on his trek through the capitals? I have not- Big Sexy...
• 17:38
followed him since, uh, the last time we talked to him. Where is he now?
• 17:42
Uh, I think he's now in, well, he was in Washington DC, and I think he's, I don't know if he slept on the Capitol lawn [laughs] or something or- Nice...
• 17:48
and he, he said that the, the, uh, security guy was really nice, which said, "Don't fall asleep." So he slept or something. I don't know. [laughs] But yeah, he's in, uh, Virginia now maybe. He's in Guantanamo now.
• 17:58
He fell asleep. Yeah, he's- [laughs] Yeah, yeah. [laughs] He's, he's the- Unexpected Cuban visit. [laughs]... the, the only resident currently at Guantanamo. [laughs] Um, Jason's riding a trike across the country.
• 18:09
Sanchez? No, Jason- Oh. It's a different Jason. I did for Jason Becker. Becker. He's, uh, he's from, uh- Oh, that's good... the, he's from the Big Easy- Yeah... down there, and he called a few times.
• 18:17
Trikes are no joke, man. They're no fun to ride. Like, the, uh, like an old Schwinn trike. Well, they aren't fast, that's for damn sure. [laughs] Oh. It's a new, it's the newer model of the old Schwinn. Yeah.
• 18:26
But he's, uh- You might get to 12 miles an hour [laughs] Taking it upon himself. Well, he started in Minneapolis and is going to state capitals and has hit a bunch of stuff through the Midwest.
• 18:34
He came through Milwaukee and Madison, and then down through Ohio and Pennsylvania and up to Maine, and now he's going down the Eastern Seaboard.
• 18:42
So- I, I was just out in DC for my first time in April, and we had so much fun riding bikes out there. Hell, yeah. It is intense, man. It's... There's people every... It's, it's an urban bike experience to the max.
• 18:55
There's- Yeah. The, the, the middle bike lane- Oh, yeah... like, a lot better It's so great though.
• 18:59
It's like- I love it, 'cause there's fucking traffic jams and it's Saturday afternoon at 2:00 and you're just like, "See you, sucker." [laughs] Later. That's, that's... Yeah, that's the best, so good for you, Jason.
• 19:11
Yeah. Right on. So, uh, in bike-oriented news, we've got a new executive director at the Wisconsin Bike Fed. Dun-dun-dun. Nice. Filling f- Just announced. Yeah, when did they... I didn't hear anything about that.
• 19:24
Uh, just t- I just saw today. Ah. Her name is Kristin Finn. She's, uh, a, apparently a fundraiser type and definitely something that the Bike Fed needs. Yeah, that's good.
• 19:33
[laughs] And came most recently from Milwaukee Chamber Theater and has been at other music venues and other, um, places where fundraising is a real priority.
• 19:42
Plus, she's an avid cyclist and so we'll see if she can fill the schleboskhi shoes. [laughs] Hey, folks. We have another caller. I'm gonna go push the button now. Here it comes. Here he comes.
• 19:58
With the magic of the internet, who do we have on the line? Uh, Gomez. I'm a longtime listener, first-time caller. Right on, Gomez. Thank you for calling in to the program. What are you wearing? [laughs] Nothing at all.
• 20:15
Nothing at all. Stupid, sexy Gomez. [laughs] Uh, I'm in a ensemble from, uh, ExOfficio. Oh. Some, uh, infant pants and a Baja button down, lovely midnight blue T... or, uh, shirt.
• 20:33
You know, like button shirt- Nice... like a, a gentleman shirt. It's made for fishing. Are you wearing- I don't know why I'm wearing it, but- I know.
• 20:39
I, I also have a couple fishing shirts because they were inexpensive at the Columbia Outlet Store and they work great. There you go. Okay. Room you two. Hey. So, uh, besides the usual s- [laughs] Hey, speaking of rooms.
• 20:51
No. Uh, besides the usual suspects, JK here and, uh, Tony Burger in the studio, we've got Mr. Bill from, uh, Rushmore Records hanging out. He's gonna be the one giving you all the smooch on the microphone. Mr. Bill.
• 21:07
[laughs] Oh, no. [laughs] So, uh, I, I'm calling to pimp the contest. It's the... It, it...
• 21:18
The day that, that this should launch out into the, uh, pirate satellite is one week from the deadline for registering for the Gran Fonduro which qualifies you for our VIP contest which means that you would get a lodging package, one deluxe hotel room, and then you'll be showered with compliments and, uh, I might buy you, like, a soda or a lime fizzy water, and you get a special VIP goodie bag and it comes with- Cucumber water and pluck grapes into your mouth.
• 21:55
[laughs] Excellent. See that? JK just said he was gonna bring cucumber water [laughs] and feed you grapes. You got that. That's the kind of giving- Jesus... weird society we got going here. Oh, wow.
• 22:07
This is actually on record now, damn it. [laughs] So the, so, so a week from today [laughs] see how I did that? [laughs] Uh, is, is the- Which, which is maybe today or today Friday? No, today is Friday. Okay.
• 22:20
Just making sure it's not- Right... time warped. We're time, we're time warping. You still have a week- Right, and this-... to register for free and qualify for our... Like I said, it's like $126 value.
• 22:31
Plus, there'll be other gifts and tchotchkes and- Ooh... hey, like I said, every time I see the VIP winner I'll be like, "You look really nice today." [laughs] Got that going for you.
• 22:43
What about those guys and, and ladies that have already purchased a hotel room? Yeah, a hotel room. Then you would, uh, then you would get your lodging comped. Nice.
• 22:54
But you, you know, if you don't have the choice room or, you know- Oh, gotcha... we, we booked a room for this prize, so you know- Oh...
• 23:02
you could look at it and say, "Meh, I'll keep my own room," and you can just, you know, pay the bill or, "Eh, I'll take that room 'cause, uh, it's got a minibar and, uh, et cetera." You know? Very good.
• 23:17
So the event that this is a- No, that's it... actually for, tell us about the event, it own self, coming up after the contest for the prize is actually over.
• 23:26
Oh my God, this Gran Fonduro thing has grown into three, not just one Facebook event, but three Facebook events. It starts with a, uh, Zion Cyclery, Surly Bicycles joint, the pre-party for the Fonduro.
• 23:43
I think they call it the Fonduro Pre-Party which is at Zion Cyclery on Friday night and will involve rock and roll and hoochie coo. And also a second night- Mixed together in yellow...
• 23:54
at the Illinois Resort and Conference Center. [laughs] I'm gonna have to change my reservation to two- Possibly... now possibly. Possibly, unless you wanna burn up and down Route 94 a couple of times.
• 24:05
But that does afford you, as JK should remind you, uh, multiple White Castle stops. I was just about to say that. [laughs] Like, there's two bites at the apple there. Sorry.
• 24:18
[laughs] I, I, I've never been to White Castle. You love the White Castle jingle. Oh, I'm just telling you, it's- Uh, so that's Friday night. So then, like, Saturday morning starts with a Surly bicycle demo.
• 24:31
They have Steel Force One coming up with- Uh, some of those fantastic sparkly pink ice cream trucks and the new, if you're a Navy man, they've got a navy blue, uh, Wednesday that will happen on a Saturday.
• 24:47
[laughs] And, uh, you know. I just- This is, this is a riddle. [laughs] This entire thing is a riddle. That's event number two of the same event.
• 24:54
And then we roll into the actual event, which doesn't start until, like, 2:00 in the afternoon. You roll up there, this early demo's going on.
• 25:02
You walk into this glass atrium where Chris, Chris Daisy's wearing a daisy tuxedo playing some Chopin or some Jerry Lee Lewis on the grand piano.
• 25:13
We have fat bastards that come and pet you and tell you you look really nice and introduce you [laughs] to other friendly weirdos that like fat bikes.
• 25:24
And then you check into your hotel room, you change into your stretchy pants, and then we go ride bikes to the Dead River, and then we coast gnomes. Uh, then we go back.
• 25:35
There's another ride, which you might get dropped on. It's a gravel ride out to this Oasis restaurant, which I know some of you guys have been there. Oh, yeah. You eat.
• 25:46
Oh, it's- You eat fish or you eat along the way or, you know. Is that to the, the north- Get dinner somewhere... the north run, right? North. Yeah. Yep. Okay. Right. Quite right. Quite right.
• 25:56
So you have those plans, like, get out. And [laughs] I've, I've urged them to, you know, to not drop anybody, but, and we have it in the, the, the instructions, "This will be no drop." So hopefully that'll happen.
• 26:11
[laughs] Well, there will, there will certainly be a no gr- drop group. It just might not be the one that finishes first. Usually the case. Absolutely. That's usually the case.
• 26:18
[laughs] And there's Ben stepping up to be our platoon leader, our big toe, our Sergeant Hulka, on that gravel ride. Right on. It's a giving, giving Osmond tribe we have. Yes. Uh, and then, then what?
• 26:33
Uh, then we come back after you've eaten, and then there's a big cocktail party with costumes and prizes. We award the winner of the...
• 26:43
Anybody who has registered for a hotel room, with the exception of Chris and I, and probably, uh, probably just Chris and I, um, can't win the bike, but somebody's gonna win a seven-speed Electra beach cruiser in Cordoba brown.
• 27:00
Is that the one we saw a picture of recently on- Which is the color of leisure suits. Nice. Yeah. Is that the one we recently saw the picture of? Posted that... Yeah. Yeah, last Wednesday. Gotcha.
• 27:10
The picture that disappeared somehow in, uh, in the magic of Facebook and Instagram. Like, hmm, how did that happen? All of a sudden my own stuff [laughs] that I put up there isn't available. Weird.
• 27:25
But that brings up another point, is this hotel, Illinois Beach Hotel on the beach there, Lake Michigan, supposed to be haunted- Right... by spirits. And, uh, so that, I'm pretty psyched about that myself. Yeah.
• 27:39
Right, and by that, any time- I used to go to this bar- It looks like it should be. It could- like, it could not, not be.
• 27:45
And it's just like in, uh, Beetlejuice, where, you know, they came in and they took this 1970s Playboy orange shag carpeting place, and they turned it into some modern glass sculpture, really beautiful and updated it.
• 28:00
So there's, it is really tricked out. If they w- if they would've done the Overlook, Overlook Motel hotel,
• 28:05
um, carpeting, that would've been brilliant, or at least just a runner, you know, in like one of the hallways right by room 237, you know? [laughs] I've been to that hotel. Oh, yeah. [laughs] Very creepy. You too?
• 28:19
Oh, yeah. It's creepy. The Stanley? Yes. Yep. For sure. And you walk up to that floor, and you, you literally come around the corner, you're like, "Oh, God. Oh, God. This is so scary." [laughs] It is the best. So
• 28:31
I, I just recently brought my, uh, vintage triple knit polyester leisure suit out of mothballs, and, uh, I think that that's what I'm gonna be rocking for the cocktail party.
• 28:44
We recommend, you know, formal wear, a dinner jacket, uh, motorcycle jacket, um, shoes and shirt or no service. Uh- Birthday suit... and, uh, that's it.
• 28:55
We, we, we party till midnight, and then we go out on the beach and howl at the moon, which is code for, um, naked Chris. And then you go to bed maybe, unless you, you, you're a true rocker and you stay up all night.
• 29:10
And then, like, 9:00 the next day we have a hangover, uh, derby for prizes. And then we trundle off to brunch at Zion Cyclery, where they're gonna provide you hearty carbohydrates by the millions.
• 29:25
And, uh, then there's another ride, maybe to Beulah Park, that's like mountain biking, or back to the beach for more sand in your stretchy pants. And then that's it. But wait, there's more. [laughs] That's it.
• 29:40
And this is Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. [laughs] And if you order now- Don't answer now... we'll send you another Fundero on January 2nd and 3rd. [laughs] Excellent. I kid you not. Like that.
• 29:56
So were the, uh, pictures that- Yeah... were the pictures that Tony Grande and, and brother, uh, had up on Facebook the other day, was that at Illinois Beach, or was that a different location? Do you know?
• 30:06
That was, that was at Illinois Beach. I know that was- And he said there was 25 miles an hour winds out of the east on that day. Yeah. That was pushing a lot of water in there. [laughs] Oh, geez. Still beach though.
• 30:17
That was awesome. There was still actually sand. Right. Yeah. And this is, uh, you know, there's probably room for some sort of... Oh, yeah, I didn't mention we have, like, coffee sponsors.
• 30:29
So Sunday morning for that hangover there'll be fresh brewed coffee that the guy roasts in his garage. I think it's called Garage Coffee Roasters. Um, and, uh- It's gonna be a good time.
• 30:44
I think we need, like, a tire shaver, somebody there at the party shaving tires. Oh, that would smell bad. Maybe if you had a smell-proof room. Yeah. Ned Overend will be there with his tire shaver.
• 30:58
[laughs] The, the first- Signing autographs and shaving tires... the first tire shaver I ever saw, believe it or not, was at an RC car race. Oh.
• 31:07
And there was a dude there who was shaving tires for the RC cars that were competing on the flat track. That makes good sense to me. Could not believe it. Absolutely. I was a 1/12 scale RC racing champion.
• 31:17
[laughs] That's why I brought it up. That's why I brought it up. For real? Yeah. I use sand- I use sandpaper to shave my tires. Yeah. Fancy. D- did you ever race at Cudahy News and Hobby? Raced there. Of course.
• 31:25
Raced out at, uh, Trackside. Blew my mind. I walked in there one time, and a guy, he, he was an AFX racer, and he's like, "Oh, yeah, I've, I've, uh, gone to Austria, Switzerland, uh, Germany.
• 31:37
I've raced all over the world." I'm like, "Come on. Are you shitting me, man?" RC cars? Yeah. Yeah, HO scale, AFX, baby. It was for real. Yeah. Nice. All right, Gomez, did we get through the litany of things? Beaches.
• 31:47
Or we're still, we're still on the beach, aren't we? I, I think so. No, we're s- we're still riding on the beach- Yeah... and then we, and then we check out of the hotel and- I see. Heck yeah. Are you naked yet?
• 31:56
A- and, and the hotel is, is outstanding, people. It's like, even if you don't go and say you didn't trust me enough to, like, book a room, go to this party and [laughs] and come and check it out because you'll...
• 32:12
And, and Chuck and I were both like- And mooch off somebody who does have a room [laughs]... holy... Yeah. [laughs] And, you know, this is the type of, this is the type of party where everybody should have a flask.
• 32:24
I mean, even I'm gonna have a flask. Don't mind if I do. I don't drink alcohol, but I'll have some, like, prune juice or something to keep me regular. You know? Mm-hmm.
• 32:31
That's, that's a kinda crazy Mad Cat thing that I'm going for, but you could sneak booze in there. You could do this totally on the cheap. Go to- Spike the punch... go to Goodwill. Spike the punch.
• 32:41
Get a, get a janky [laughs] get a janky, uh, suit and smelly tie and come, you know, try and find out what life is all about. [laughs] Right on, dude. That type of thing. What an awesome event.
• 32:59
Uh, uh, I, I know I'm going. I know I'm going. I think I'm going. [laughs] I'm pretty sure I'm going. [laughs] I'm, I, I have a room, and I'm hoping that it gets so popular that I can auction it off [laughs]
• 33:13
for $10 more than I paid for it. Yes. Yes. Well, you can make some money at this fatbike.com con. And I'll just sleep, I'll just sleep in the hall. So, um, t- one other- Yeah, I mean- Hammock... it's gonna be good.
• 33:24
One other thing I wanted to ask you about, um, you know that we've got Full Spectrum Cycling on the old fatbike.com Radio Network. Um, and I... What show- Uh. Are you still doing two shows? I am.
• 33:36
I have the, uh, Danger Gnome podcast, which is coming out. I have a interview with Gary Crandall.
• 33:43
Uh, we talked to Adam Blake about my stupid quest for a racier set of tires for the BoJackson that I'm racing 63 miles on gravel on Saturday. Uh- Sick... and we have a [laughs] well, I'm riding 63 miles on gravel.
• 34:02
And then we have, uh, a young lady, ah, and it... Sure her, uh, her name escapes me, but, uh, Liz Sansie that's w- who the, the super special guest who is embarking on a trip across...
• 34:16
She starts in Pakistan and goes through Nepal and India, 1,500 miles of riding a fat bike and paddling a paddle, uh, a packraft with the fat bike, fat bike strapped onto the deck of that boat.
• 34:31
Uh, yeah, so that's, that's the next Danger Gnome podcast. And then we still do the, the, uh, Dose of Fat thing, which is, of course, you guys were... Uh, Sven was on, like, 120 of those shows. JK was probably on 50.
• 34:47
Tony was probably on three, six. Tony? Something like that. Got a number for me? 12. Yeah, man. And so, you know- 867-5309... uh, we, we just recorded [laughs]
• 35:01
we just recorded show number 149, which means, you know, uh, I think it's the- That's, that's-... cyclical centennial show... that's cyclical centennial. Sick. Coming up. Uh, so, you know, if you...
• 35:15
You're all, you're all welcome to, uh, record a special tribute or, uh, a string of profanities [laughs] or, or join in the fun of our 150th golden jubilee show, coming to you in maybe November, December. Right on.
• 35:32
Uh, maybe pick out a greatest hit from our previous, uh, previous shows. Oh, yeah, we got those archived on the old, uh, two terabyte LaCie hard drive, so... By the way, LaCie- Nice storage...
• 35:44
you're welcome to sponsor the show. Oh, hell yeah. It's one of the orangies. It's one of the bulletproof ones. So- I've destroyed a bunch of those... yeah, yeah. Tony, uh, Tony destroys computers.
• 35:54
Well, you- He actually has... Even for being a computer guy, he makes sure he stays in business by just wrecking computers with an aura of magnetic something around him, I think. Yeah, I love it. Yeah.
• 36:05
Are, are, are you surfing hard again, Tony? [laughs] I would say Tony would be, uh, like- Semihard... you know, with his, with his f- I'm like a fine cheese...
• 36:14
with his family history of, uh, in the butchering arts, he would be the perfect craftsman for shaving tires. I could do that. Getting some knives, uh, yeah, see? Some nice sandpaper. Think about it. Oil.
• 36:27
And you can still slice this tomato- Potted industry... even after [laughs] Ha ha ha ha. Ha ha. We each customize ours. I'm telling you, when I...
• 36:35
I, I just came back from Washington, and two of the bikes out there, um, my buddy Ward Whitmeyer used a hobby knife and shaved them down, and he, uh, he took a pair of Vee Rubber-...
• 36:50
snowshoe two XLs and shaves them down and has them running on, on Hondas, and it's the ghost track, dude.
• 36:58
Like, five PSI and you can't even see his tracks, but if you can follow his path, it's 13% more solid than, you know, regular sand. Wow. Sounds pretty sick. That's, that's a wild-ass gap.
• 37:14
That's well- It was pretty good... well thought out, for sure. But out there, dudes, it's a low tide. We had a football field with a beach. Wow. And all the Dungeness crab parts you could eat- Ooh...
• 37:28
if you wanted the best parts. Excellent. Gotta make it out there. Yeah. All right, dude. All right. Well, I, I should probably shut up, 'cause you guys have other stuff going on. Thanks for calling in, Gomez.
• 37:38
I mean, Gary. I mean, Gomez. [laughs] Okay. [laughs] Thanks, dude. See you later. We'll see you- Have fun... soon. Bye. Bye. Have fun. Take care. [laughs] All right, Gomez from Fatbike.com- Fatbike.com...
• 37:54
talking about the Funduro down there, Illinois Beach State Park. That's gonna be fun. November 2nd and 3rd, 2019, and then there's another one coming up in January 2020- 2nd and 3rd... and one in April.
• 38:04
Another one in April again. So there's a, it's a three-pack. Ooh. Slightly different versions of each. Uh, Mr.
• 38:10
Chris Daisy is more the lead on the, the Fatter By The Lake coming up in January, and then April, I got no idea. Nice. Nice.
• 38:17
But I can tell you this, any event that Gomez puts on or is part of putting on is always a good time. T- tends to be fun. Tends to be fun. So. Well. He's one of the people that does the things correct like.
• 38:27
[laughs] Wonder if he's bringing the dogs. Dags. The dags? Dags. You know, I'm just curious. Gomez, if you're still listening to this on Friday- Bring your dags...
• 38:37
if you bring the dogs, I won't ride the bikes, I'll just watch your dogs. I'll just ride your dogs, 'cause they're like horses. Yeah, they are big enough to ride them like dogs.
• 38:42
Yeah, the, uh, what is it, Bernese- Bernese Mountain Dogs. Bernese Mountain. Got a fresh puppy in the neighborhood and she's- Oh... so freaking cute... those are gorgeous dogs... it's unbelievable. All right. No shirt.
• 38:52
So way, way, way before November 2nd, uh, Bill's got an event coming up down there Bayview way. You wanna rap about that a little bit? Uh, yeah, I'd be happy to. Um, it's called Biketoberfest, and we're doing it [sighs]
• 39:08
I think this is year 16. I don't know. It's been, it's been a long time. And, uh, it is a pub crawl. It's free. Um, you show up at the spot. This year it is Baby Boomers- [laughs]...
• 39:24
on Lincoln and Burrell. Burrell. It's gonna be amazing. Yeah, it took me a second. [laughs] When, when, when I, when I saw the, the thing and I'm like- It's right by Dinardo's. Nice. Yeah. I bike by it every day.
• 39:35
And, uh, yeah. And then you meet up, and we'll be back there at around midnight. That's how it goes. And then whatever happens in between happens in between, so it's a little bit of a mystery. Uh, various things happen.
• 39:49
Shrouded in enigma. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. I'm, I'm planning it so it's not, uh, too intensive. It's, uh... But hopefully, you can always count on, um, on this ride, 'cause it's in October, we encourage costumes.
• 40:05
Um, [smacks lips] you can pretty much always count on a ride through a cemetery at some point. Uh- I recall that. Yeah.
• 40:13
And, uh, I also try very hard to, a- at least we've done it for the past probably eight or 10 years, going through Seminary Woods, which, oh, not, not the woods, but the driveway through there- Yeah, got it...
• 40:28
'cause it's spectacular at night. Exactly. Yep, for sure. Um, yeah. So it's, it's like I said, it's free.
• 40:35
Uh, we usually, that- that's, we do, well, we do three rides a year out of the store, and that is by far the biggest one. Although [laughs] it, uh, will shrink rapidly if the weather is like it is tonight. Yeah.
• 40:48
[laughs] So. So this one's, uh, Friday, October 11th. Yeah. And generally they're 12 miles I think is probably the maximum you'll ride, so it's, it's- Wow... for, it- it's for Sunday riders.
• 41:02
For us Northsiders that works great. Yeah. You get, you get seven, eight miles on the way down- Yeah. [laughs]... a good ride, seven, eight miles on the way back. Seven, eight miles on the way back. [laughs] 49 for beer.
• 41:09
Yep. So how did a, how did a record store guy get going on promoting some bike rides? Oh, man, I never, I, you know, I, I never owned a car till I was 30, and bikes were, for me,
• 41:22
not to wax philosophical, but bike, bicycles equal freedom in my head, you know? I mean, it's, it's, you just do whatever the fuck you want and go wherever you wanna go, point it and push.
• 41:34
You know, I, I mean, we're in a city of motorcycles and I just, I, [sighs] I'm not an elitist, I swear to God, but, like, sometimes I look over and I'm like, "You're on this $40,000 noise maker," and I don't know.
• 41:50
I, so yeah, I mean, I, I- Well, I am an elitist and I hate those motherfuckers. [laughs] I'll just say that. I'm just gonna come right out. It's just so obnoxious. It's so annoying.
• 41:59
That's the, the worst part of summer for me. But, uh- Loud pipes save lives my ass. Yeah. Um, th- so anyway, we, [sighs] like I said, we bought this...
• 42:08
I used to work in school, I worked in the record store, and, uh, it was tits up. It was ready to, the, the owner was like, "I'm closing it down." We had a manager who was basically just stealing.
• 42:21
He would order stuff in the front door and then sell it [laughs] out of his house and it- Wow... it was a bad scene. And, uh, I talked to my friend Dan, who is a savant. He's a, he's a music freak.
• 42:35
Like, he, you wanna know about a flexi that came out in Thrasher in 1982, he'll tell you, you know, who's on the B side. Whatever, it's, he's just a freak. [laughs] So he, uh, he kinda runs the show there.
• 42:51
Um, [smacks lips] and we've done, through the years, I don't know, like I said, we, we do it 'cause it allows us to... do whatever we want. We do a dog blessing out of the store. We do, uh, we do these bike rides.
• 43:04
We do, uh, a pumpkin festival in Humble Park. Um- Oh, that's coming up. Yeah, that's coming up, too. And, uh, I don't know, it's, it's just a, kind of a fun thing.
• 43:14
You know, people are like, "Community, community," but it's, uh, I don't know. If, if you're bored, it's up to you. We weren't allowed to say bored when I was a kid. [laughs] Like, or you get a fucking- We're bored.
• 43:25
Smack... broom. Yeah. [laughs] It just means you, means you lack- There you go... imagination, man. Yeah. You- It's like, "Here's a broom. Get your a-," you know, or, "Here, here's a shovel. You're bored?
• 43:33
Here's some work for you." So- Did, did your parents throw out, you know, if you were crying, "I'll give you something to cry about"? Um- 'Cause that was my mom's favorite expression...
• 43:41
I, I never, I never cried- "Shut up or I'll give you something to cry about."... uh, as a child. I was- Cry free... yeah. We, we'd, they'd hold our hand over a open flame, and if you cried, it would, it was not good.
• 43:53
Uh, no, I don't know. Um- The trick is not minding. [laughs] Yeah. The old la- the old family, the old family expressions, you know? "Don't make me pull this car over." Yeah, no kidding. You know?
• 44:02
I, I was the youngest at nine, so I got it pretty hard from- At six... my older brothers and sisters, you know? Yeah, me too.
• 44:07
I, I didn't, it didn't filter up the chain too often, 'cause they'd threaten to beat my ass if I took it that far. [laughs] So, but yeah, um, back to the, I don't know. Um, Biketoberfest is actually the second ride.
• 44:21
The, the first ride we did was the Tour de Farce, and that I think started in 2000, 2001.
• 44:29
And, uh, actually, the first one I couldn't even do it, 'cause I had my knee scoped, so I was hobbling around and r- driving in the sag wagon prize truck. [laughs] Um, yeah, so we, basically
• 44:42
the, the format of this ride, if anybody's interested, is you show up,
• 44:47
and we used to post directions, but then people would take their own routes, which pissed me off, 'cause we try and take care to keep as many left turns and, like, just wanna keep you off the beaten path, and we find some cool little spots to, to go through.
• 45:02
Right. And when we'd post directions. Now, it's just, like, we got a air horn. Two blasts means five minutes, drink up. One long one means w- rolling out, so come on with. And, uh, we just, it's like a long...
• 45:16
It keeps everybody together. Yeah. Keeps, you know, in a- Yep, works good... in a group. And, um, so yeah, there's, there's been some changes. And then, uh, yeah. So I, I guess if you show up, e- everybody's welcome.
• 45:29
There's prizes at every stop. You get a... It's a way to kinda keep our eye on the attendance. We give out a, a raffle ticket at the beginning, and it's good all night,
• 45:40
and, uh, at each stop we give away five, six things. There's often live music. There's often, uh, this, uh, there's gonna be some fun stuff this one. Nice. So. I remember the Hand of Doom show.
• 45:55
Hand of Doom was fantastic. That was- But it was so crowded. [laughs] Yeah. But somehow Zito, somehow Zito and I were right in front, and I'm like, "Yeah, let's- Yeah... we're not leaving this corner or this bar.
• 46:04
I have to go to the bathroom, but I'm not leaving." That place, man. [laughs] Uh, the, the, th- that's the other thing, i- is it's difficult
• 46:12
to, when you, when you do these, to find bars that c- ca- can accommodate the, the crew, because you don't want them spilling... Every, it happens.
• 46:20
Everybody brings beers in their backpack, and, you know, uh, that's understood. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, like, you don't want giant groups outside of businesses drinking in the street, because that makes...
• 46:31
The, the g- they can get in trouble for that. Yeah, yeah. So it is difficult to find bars that are large enough.
• 46:36
You can't, you have to assume that the weather's gonna be good, and so that's kind of a, that, that's sort of a, a thing now that we- Yeah, that you-... have to look for...
• 46:44
you're running into that, 'cause, like, with the- Yeah... the Fat Tire Tour, Milwaukee's gotten so big- Yep, yep... that the only places they can go are the breweries- Right...
• 46:52
and, and they're, you know- Same with Rampage... yeah, it's okay. Same thing, yeah. It's not what, it's not what originally that, that ride was all about, but it's morphed into what it is. Yeah.
• 46:59
Kind of a big rolling- Just like Rampage... costume show. Yep. Yeah, that's- So-... that's, we, we, we took steps. One year, um,
• 47:06
we had, like, a 65 degree, it was just peak fall, beautiful weather, and, um, we ended up, I think we had 310- [laughs]... and that scared the shit out of me.
• 47:17
[laughs] 'Cause, like, I mean, this is Milwaukee, and people- Yeah... love to drink, and, you know, I, there's some people that, that just can't... [laughs] There's one- Say no? Oh. Yeah, you know?
• 47:28
And it's like- Oh, no, I, I, I've been on- It, it, it c- it can get pretty gnarly, you know? I've been on TLMs of- I don't want anybody's blood on my hands. Yeah. You know?
• 47:35
I, and, and- I feel that way about the Underpants rides. Yeah. People just get- Yeah, it's a bummer, you know?... cool dressed up.
• 47:40
I mean, it, it's a great idea, but you always have to account for jackasses in every crowd. Mm-hmm. You know? And, uh, when you do something fun, they're, it's gonna attract jackasses, you know?
• 47:50
I, I'm, I'm actually, I'd be less worried about that ride. I mean, if I were doing that ride, I'd be more worried about sexual assault, you know? I mean, like, aft- at the end [laughs] of the night when
• 48:02
you got liquored-up peop- but whatever. Has Steve Roach, I, he, he's got his hand on the pulse. [laughs] Yeah. It, it's- Yeah, for sure... he keeps it down. Yeah. Yeah.
• 48:11
Um- I've done a number of them, and I've, yeah, it's, it's, it's dialed in. Yep, yep. Yeah. In fact, we met a, a... It was great. This summer we did the Tour de Farce and we met up with the Underwear ride- Yeah...
• 48:22
which was really fun. We took over Cathedral Square, and, uh, that was grand. But yeah, uh, we, uh, I'm trying to think of anything else I'd like to add that might make this se-... Well, we've actively taken steps to...
• 48:36
We used to do posters, and we'd put it out on Facebook, and now it's just, like, I'll send out, uh, probably 30 JPEGs of the poster to, like, influencers like Michael here, and just, like- Monday...
• 48:50
rely on them to- I think I, I think I filed mine for Monday. Yeah, yeah.
• 48:54
Monday or, or, you know, I mean, it was just a, a core group and, and, uh, uh, certainly everyone is welcome, but- You kinda keep it to people who know what- what's up- Yeah...
• 49:03
and then, then let them invite whoever they want, 'cause you, they can explain it. [laughs] Yeah, good call. I think that's a good way to kind of moderate- Mm-hmm... without excluding. Yeah. We had a...
• 49:15
You know what was awesome? Last year, uh, we went to a tiki bar in Kataha- Tiki bar... and the entire night, um- Tiki bar... there was, [laughs]
• 49:24
uh, there was a very fearsome looking woman who I'd never seen before, super gnarly, like beautiful Polynesian, uh, tatted up, just badass woman.
• 49:36
And we're in the tiki bar, and, uh, she sat down next to me and I heard her accent, and I was talking to her. [smacks lips] And I'm like, "I, I... You know, I, this sounds cheesy, but where are you from?"
• 49:47
And it turns out she was from the Easter Islands, and- Oh, yeah. Wow... just showed up. And I... It was great, 'cause I've never in my life met anyone from the Easter...
• 49:55
I, I've met some guys that look like Easter Island sculptures. [laughs] But, like, I've never met... And, and it was... Uh, that was a really cool memory of that, so. Wow. Right on.
• 50:06
Well- And she rode with it, or she just showed? Yeah. Yeah. Nice. No, she rode the whole ride. That's... I was just like, "Ah." That's cool. And, and she did it 'cause, like everybody w- my...
• 50:14
Throughout my life, whenever I travel, you hit up the, the... I hit up a record store and I hit up a bike shop, and that's your eye level. You look for the guys that aren't jackasses, you know, that are...
• 50:26
aren't looking at what, what kind of a seat you ha- You know? Mm-hmm. You just look for the regular cats, and they will, uh, they'll, they'll get you dialed in right away. Yeah.
• 50:34
And that's, that's been a great philos- I've found- Hell yeah... it works everywhere you go. Cool. Eye- eyes on the ground. Yeah. [laughs] Uh, anything else before we wrap this puppy up? Uh, yeah. You know what?
• 50:45
I, I am gonna... I mentioned the pumpkin thing earlier, and I, I just finalized, um... So this, this is something that we've been doing for a while, and, um, it, it's probably nearest and dearest to my heart.
• 51:00
It's a, it's a free event in Humboldt Park, which is in Bayview. Um, it is a production, man. It, it... There... Every year, there's something new, there's something cool. Um,
• 51:14
we're getting the creepy teepee back this year, which is a giant... Uh, my friend Jen is gonna go cut down a forest of saplings- [laughs]...
• 51:24
and build a teepee, which she then festoons with hip bones and femurs of animals she finds on hikes- [laughs]... and drives out. So it's definitely creepy. [laughs] Nice. And there's lights.
• 51:37
So i- we've got, uh, there's, there's probably 1,000 pumpkins lit up. Oh, there's... Yeah. Friday night, uh, the band Bleed is gonna play. Oh, hell yeah. Saturday, The Quills are gonna play. Um, it's...
• 51:49
Like I said, it's all free. There's plenty of, uh, beer to be purchased at the park. Um, on Wednesday and Thursday, everybody comes out. We get a ton of volunteers. We ja- we, uh, jigsaw open all the pumpkins. We get,
• 52:05
we get a semi full of pumpkins in pallets. And I... This is... It's fun, 'cause I don't normally get to drive a forklift in my day-to-day, so I get to drive a forklift.
• 52:17
[laughs] And, uh, we cut all the tops off, and there's a whole line. They clean the pumpkins, and then people show up, get a clean pumpkin- Carve the shit out of them... carve it up. Nice. Yeah.
• 52:26
And, uh, you don't have to get your hands dirty. Um, Thursday night, we just... Today, I just finalized, uh, Gnarren Schiff, a River West band, is gonna- Yeah... or Gnarren Skiff. Sorry. Gnarren Skiff.
• 52:38
It's Bob and the Boys. Yeah. Bob's and the Boys. And they're gonna be playing during the carving and freaking people out. Oh, yeah. I'm sure, uh, that's gonna be awesome.
• 52:46
But, uh- You can model, you can model your pumpkins after Bob. Yeah, no doubt. [laughs] Is this Bob Bob? Yeah. Bob? Handsome Bob. Handsome Bob. Handsome Bob's band. Oh, God. [laughs] Yeah. And, um, so yeah.
• 52:57
It happens, um... There's a grand lighting Friday at 6:30 PM. Totally family friendly, but not square. You know? Yeah.
• 53:05
Like, you can bring your grandparents, you can bring your sexy hipster boyfriend or girlfriend, and you'll have a good time. It's, it's pretty... We find, uh, uh, as many local artists as we can and tell them what...
• 53:20
The vibe is, like, '60s hammer films, not... We don't wa- we wanna scare kids, but we wanna freak them out. Right. Like, we don't wanna... There's no gore, none of that shit. It's, it's all, like, just creepy. Um,
• 53:34
the other, the other touchstone is To Kill a Mockingbird, the, the nighttime trick or treat where scouts dress like a ham- [laughs]... which is my favorite Halloween costume [laughs] ever.
• 53:46
It's just, it just says, "Ham." [laughs] So great. [laughs] So yeah. Uh, it, it's dark out. And, um, I don't know. I, I can't say enough about it. And, uh- Yeah. When is this? There was- It is the 18th and 19th.
• 54:01
There we go. Um, the carvings are the 16th and 17th of October. Um, but yeah. It's, uh... We're really proud of it. And it's, it's, it's for the kids, but it's for the kid in all of us, you know? It's- Yeah.
• 54:13
They had the, uh, uh... one year, uh, the fire dancers. Yeah. They're there every year. And it wa- well, it was so funny, 'cause it was, like, the fire dancers, but the, [laughs] the fire dancers going to, uh,
• 54:23
dancing to, like, somebody... I can't remember who was doing a version of White Rabbit. So it, it was just kinda surreal- Yeah. It was-... just watching the whole thing, you know, like boo doo doo doo doo. Yeah.
• 54:33
There's always- Yeah. It was like-... fire dancers. Um, last year there was a woman... We, we've also... Uh, it's been...
• 54:38
It took us a while, 'cause I think they just didn't get the concept, but, um, we partnered up with Milwaukee Makerspace. And this [laughs] woman last year, it was just fanta-...
• 54:50
Like, I just, I just think about it, if I was a little kid, like, there's shit that'll blow your mind. They had a- Oh, yeah.
• 54:57
There's a f- like a three and a half foot tall fence [clears throat] with a rope tethered to a ball, and the little kids could step up and they'd throw it at, like, a back lit-... basically a toilet seat. So it was like
• 55:13
a- [laughs]... black toilet seat that was hyper-backlit, and you'd throw the ball, and if you'd hit it, it would connect to contact, which would then throw a ball of flame like 10 feet in the air behind it.
• 55:25
[laughs] Nice. And it was just so fucking cool. [laughs] You know? And it was just like- It's a little-... one of these projects... especially as kids, they're just shit bricks, man. Yeah, man. You know? Yeah.
• 55:34
And then like- They didn't even know. I'd be like, "Oh, totally. I did it." Yeah. [laughs] "What do you mean I didn't what?" Yeah. I totally did it. I wanna know. I was just like, yeah, fire.
• 55:41
And that's, it, and when we were, we kind of, we, we had to partner up with the neighborhood association, and they're always kind of like, uh, "Well, you know, insurance," and you know how that goes. Yeah.
• 55:51
When you just- Okay, we won't do it. Right. [laughs] And we're just like, "Fire? Yes, of course. Like, there's nothing better than fire." There'll be no fire. We, we also, we tried, we- [laughs]...
• 56:03
we haven't figured out the best use of the lagoon yet, and they're very, uh, DNR tuned, but we, we, we wanted to float- Huh... like saucers full of fire in the lake, 'cause- Yeah... it's awesome.
• 56:18
But we, I don't think that's gonna happen this year. See, for all you folks outside the listening area- Yeah... there's a lot of good ideas for events in your own backyard. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
• 56:27
Use us as a building block. Yeah. It's, uh- Can you, can you do this up in Alaska? I bet you can. I bet you can. Try hard. Know what I'm saying? Know, know [laughs] what I'm saying. Know what I'm saying. Right on.
• 56:38
Bill, thanks very much for your insight- Yeah... and coming on the show. Guys, I'm super glad to break my podcast cherry with all of you. Ooh. Yeah. So, uh- Hey... it's a good night. We'll be back here next week.
