- 0:01Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 0:04Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Stone Temple Pilots on the Hauraki Big Show with Pugs
- 0:10Speaker 2: and Mogi. And we're very, very lucky to be joined
- 0:12Speaker 2: in studio by a special guest, an absolute legend around
- 0:15Speaker 2: these parts and across the ditch. Of course, I'm talking
- 0:17Speaker 2: about Chopper in the studio with us. G'day, you mad bastard.
- 0:21Speaker 3: How you going?
- 0:21Speaker 4: That's very lovely to say that. It's not often you
- 0:23Speaker 4: wander into a compliment barrage like that.
- 0:25Speaker 3: That was a real stream of compliments, wasn't it?
- 0:28Speaker 4: Well, I'm glad there's tables in the way. I'm just
- 0:31Speaker 4: wearing tracksuit pants.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you'll be all over.
- 0:33Speaker 5: A little bit of grace never hurt anyone, man.
- 0:35Speaker 3: They'd be loving it. Hey, I've got a question for you, man.
- 0:37Speaker 3: We've sort of been banging on the show a little
- 0:38Speaker 3: bit today because it's my birthday, my 50th birthday. Oh,
- 0:41Speaker 3: happy birthday. Now, I understand you're also 50, which is
- 0:44Speaker 3: a hell of a coincidence. What sort of changes did
- 0:47Speaker 3: you notice in your life when you hit the big 5-0,
- 0:49Speaker 3: if any?
- 0:51Speaker 4: Well, now you're in the era where, you know, in
- 0:54Speaker 4: your 20s, you used to hurt yourself when you got
- 0:57Speaker 4: out drinking. And in your teens, you hurt yourself playing
- 1:00Speaker 4: team sport. In your 50s, you hurt yourself when you
- 1:02Speaker 4: cough when you're making the bed. Yeah. You know, you'll
- 1:05Speaker 4: be halfway putting a fold in and you go, oh, no,
- 1:07Speaker 4: I've done my back.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Well, I've been talking about it on the show today.
- 1:10Speaker 3: What happened today is I got woken up by a
- 1:12Speaker 3: tui at 3.45. Oh, yeah? You know, a lot of people,
- 1:15Speaker 3: they like a native bird. I hate a native bird
- 1:18Speaker 3: because they bang on and they're a protected species, so
- 1:20Speaker 3: I can't get a shotgun out. Then I put on
- 1:23Speaker 3: my hoodie. to get started for the day, and it
- 1:26Speaker 3: was on backwards, so I had a hood on the
- 1:27Speaker 3: wrong way around.
- 1:28Speaker 5: So good.
- 1:30Speaker 3: And I've had sore.
- 1:31Speaker 4: So the zipper wasn't a giveaway? No, there's no zipper.
- 1:35Speaker 3: How about drawstrings? But I've also, and you're right there,
- 1:38Speaker 3: because I've also had sore kidneys all day, which have
- 1:41Speaker 3: had me worried for apparently no reason.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Oh, kidneys is a weird one. I mean, if your
- 1:45Speaker 4: liver's sore, you're like, I know where that came from.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I know where that is, yeah. I'll get you. Well, kidneys,
- 1:50Speaker 4: do they filter out the blood or something like that?
- 1:52Speaker 3: I think so, yeah. I'm pretty sure it's booze-related, but
- 1:55Speaker 3: I feel like I've been relatively responsible with that. So
- 1:57Speaker 3: today I've had 18 paracetamols and 23 ibuprofen.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that'll give the kidneys something to do. I reckon
- 2:06Speaker 4: just to be on the safe side, I would cut
- 2:09Speaker 4: a big hole in your arm, put your blood in
- 2:11Speaker 4: a bucket, filter it through a sponge and pop it
- 2:13Speaker 4: back in, just to give your kidneys a bit of
- 2:16Speaker 4: a day off.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Oh, thank you very much.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Just to be on the safe side.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Maybe some codeine.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. Probably a suppository. That's a different system, isn't it?
- 2:25Speaker 3: Actually, the only thing I've got left, so I was
- 2:27Speaker 3: trawling through, everybody's got a really terrible first aid kit
- 2:31Speaker 3: at home. The only thing I've got left at home, ibuprofen-wise,
- 2:35Speaker 3: is literally suppositories. Yep. And they're about the size of a,
- 2:42Speaker 3: you know, a not terribly well-endowed man's downstairs.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Oh, I was going to say they're a little bit
- 2:47Speaker 4: like an albino bullet.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah, they are. They are.
- 2:50Speaker 4: They're great. You can just keep pushing them until you
- 2:52Speaker 4: hear a clicking sound. That's when you're dosed out.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Tap. Oh, no.
- 2:57Speaker 4: That's the last one.
- 2:58Speaker 3: But you're back again. What do you do? Because I
- 3:02Speaker 3: see your tour is coming up. You're all over the
- 3:05Speaker 3: country once again, and this time you're celebrating 20 years.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Of Chopper.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Well, 50 years of Chopper, but maybe 20 years of
- 3:12Speaker 3: coming to New Zealand.
- 3:13Speaker 4: 20 years of being good at it, yeah. No, I'm
- 3:15Speaker 4: giving myself a little pat on the back. But, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 4: there's a while there because I kind of try and
- 3:20Speaker 4: write a new show every year for people, but there
- 3:23Speaker 4: is a bit of an appetite out there for people
- 3:24Speaker 4: to be like, yeah, I want to hear that old
- 3:26Speaker 4: bit again. You're like, yeah, no, I can do that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You must love that, though. You must love, oh, I
- 3:31Speaker 3: just wheel out the old stuff.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Oh, I mean.
- 3:35Speaker 4: It's good, but then when you start, you're halfway through it,
- 3:37Speaker 4: you're like, this is a good bit of gear. Why
- 3:39Speaker 4: did I stop telling you this? You know what I mean?
- 3:41Speaker 4: This is an absolute belter. You look at the audience there,
- 3:44Speaker 4: cry laughing, some woman's fallen off her chair in pure delight,
- 3:47Speaker 4: and you're like, oh, this is how it should be,
- 3:49Speaker 4: you know?
- 3:49Speaker 3: And is it easy to sort of, because you're pulling
- 3:52Speaker 3: content from a million different shows over 20 years, is
- 3:56Speaker 3: it difficult to sort of link them all together, or
- 3:58Speaker 3: do you just do it with genuine charisma?
- 4:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just pure charisma, basically. No, you know, I
- 4:06Speaker 4: don't like segues because people don't need them. You know
- 4:09Speaker 4: what I mean? Yeah. Actually, speaking of walking down the
- 4:12Speaker 4: street and noticing something funny, I did that the other day.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Just get to the bit. Just go for the throat.
- 4:17Speaker 4: So this is just jugular slashing joke after jugular slashing joke.
- 4:22Speaker 3: And everything happened just the other day as well.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, especially, which is crazy for a 20-year career
- 4:27Speaker 4: for it all to have happened last Tuesday.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Are you going to mention that? Yeah. Actually, a funny
- 4:32Speaker 3: thing happened to me 19 years ago.
- 4:34Speaker 4: 20 years ago, it was a warm Wednesday in October
- 4:39Speaker 4: and a series of hilarious things happened to me and
- 4:42Speaker 4: here they all are now.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Fantastic.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I tell you what, Chopper, we'll go to a tune
- 4:46Speaker 2: and we'll come back right back.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Do you like Velvet Revolver?
- 4:50Speaker 4: I don't hate him.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Perfect.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I mean, yeah.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Yeah, that's better. It's the Hauraki Big Show. Oh, g'day, Matt. Oh, hi, mate.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:59Speaker 6: Look, if you want the chance to win all our
- 5:02Speaker 6: on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation,
- 5:07Speaker 6: tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven
- 5:10Speaker 6: weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio.
- 5:15Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 5:18Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Velvet Revolver on the Hauraki Big Show and we've got
- 5:24Speaker 2: Chopper in the studio celebrating 20 years with his tour
- 5:27Speaker 2: Gold coming up in November. Chopper, you mentioned before we
- 5:30Speaker 2: started you'd never been to Greymouth. You're hitting a lot
- 5:33Speaker 2: of the big centres, Ashburton's in there, Awamaru. Where else
- 5:37Speaker 2: haven't you been around these regions of Aotearoa?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Oh, on this current tour?
- 5:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 5: So you haven't done Greymouth?
- 5:43Speaker 4: Greymouth's the only one.
- 5:45Speaker 5: That's the only one you've never been there before.
- 5:47Speaker 4: I have to admit, I want to apologise to the
- 5:48Speaker 4: people of Oamaru. Is that how you say it? Am
- 5:50Speaker 4: I saying it in.
- 5:51Speaker 3: A wrong way? Oamaru, yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 4: It's pretty good.
- 5:54Speaker 3: It's not bad, and it's also nice that you care
- 5:56Speaker 3: enough to ask.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I like to do that. You know, if
- 6:00Speaker 4: you're going to go to the trouble of crashing a
- 6:02Speaker 4: train into a wall, I want to get your town's
- 6:04Speaker 4: name right. If you're going to be the steampunk capital
- 6:06Speaker 4: of New Zealand... You've got to get around with your
- 6:08Speaker 4: leather top hat and your goggles on it and all
- 6:10Speaker 4: that stuff. But, yeah, no, I haven't been there for
- 6:13Speaker 4: a couple of years, so it'll be good to go
- 6:15Speaker 4: back there and see what they're up to.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Any horrendous memories around the country, man? Because you are
- 6:19Speaker 3: hitting some pretty incredible spots. Your Grey Mouse, your Ash Burdens.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Palmerston North must be a hell of an opportunity for you.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Oh, I love Palmy. All my fans there, I call
- 6:29Speaker 4: the Palmy Army. I don't. I've never said that before.
- 6:31Speaker 4: I regret saying it now. I'm going to hit myself
- 6:33Speaker 4: in the face when I leave here. But no, I
- 6:36Speaker 4: think the worst thing that's happened to me on tour
- 6:38Speaker 4: in New Zealand is I had a couple of guys
- 6:39Speaker 4: in the hire car. I was telling a particularly funny
- 6:42Speaker 4: story while I was overtaking and I almost killed us
- 6:46Speaker 4: all when an oncoming truck came around a blind corner.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Was it the truck's fault for coming around the blind
- 6:52Speaker 3: corner or were you on the wrong side of the
- 6:53Speaker 3: road when you went around the blind corner?
- 6:55Speaker 4: It was their fault for focusing on the truck instead
- 6:58Speaker 4: of the story. I got us back in the lane
- 7:01Speaker 4: just in time, a bit of a honk, landed the
- 7:03Speaker 4: punchline and they're all white. I'm looking in the rearview
- 7:05Speaker 4: mirror being like, what's wrong with you? That's gold.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And that is a hell of a title for the
- 7:11Speaker 3: tour as well, gold. You're setting yourself up for failure there,
- 7:17Speaker 3: high expectations, but you think you can deliver on it?
- 7:19Speaker 4: Oh, I can deliver and I have delivered. I've been
- 7:22Speaker 4: doing the show around Australia and we're becoming a fairly
- 7:25Speaker 4: humorless bunch of people.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Is that true over in Aussie?
- 7:28Speaker 4: Everyone's getting a bit uptight, you know what I mean?
- 7:30Speaker 4: You go to somewhere like Melbourne and everyone's either in a,
- 7:32Speaker 4: They've got a little blue hair and a pierced septum
- 7:34Speaker 4: or they're a Nazi and there's not much in between anymore.
- 7:38Speaker 4: So it's nice to come to New Zealand where there's
- 7:40Speaker 4: just regular folk.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yeah, is that right? Are we regular folk? Because it
- 7:43Speaker 3: feels like we're a little bit on edge over here
- 7:45Speaker 3: as well.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Oh, really? I mean, if this is you guys on edge.
- 7:49Speaker 2: If you want to get tickets for Chopper's gold tour
- 7:52Speaker 2: around Aotearoa, you can get them now from tickertech.co.nz.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Would that be right, mate?
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah, for most of them, for some of them.
- 8:00Speaker 5: There's also eventfinder.co.nz as well.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah, there's different ticketing agencies for each thing. I mean,
- 8:05Speaker 4: if you can't figure out how to find tickets in
- 8:07Speaker 4: your own town with Google, I kind of don't want
- 8:09Speaker 4: you there. I don't want to be rude, but it's 2026.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Help yourself. People message me and they're like, how do
- 8:16Speaker 4: I find tickets? I'm like, I'd just be Googling it too, mate.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 4: So, you know, there's got to be a bit of
- 8:22Speaker 4: an IQ threshold.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, although they do have disposable income, some of them.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe that's it. Maybe it's their butler's day off.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:30Speaker 4: They're about to buy 600 tickets and I just told
- 8:32Speaker 4: them to get stuffed online.
- 8:33Speaker 3: You never know your luck.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Oh, damn it. That's why that bloody Invercargill show didn't
- 8:36Speaker 4: sell out. All those Invercargill billionaires.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Good on you, mate. Get to Googling chopper gold. In
- 8:43Speaker 5: the meantime, you like The Cure? More than Velvet Revolver, maybe?
- 8:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I reckon I do. Oh, this is a good one, too.
- 8:48Speaker 5: It's the Hodaki Big Show.
- 8:50Speaker 1: The Hodaki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 8:53Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hodaki.
