Speaker 1: Chapter twenty one, Pinocchio is caught by a farmer who
• 0:05
Speaker 1: uses him as a watch dog for his chicken coop. Pinocchio,
• 0:10
Speaker 1: as you may well imagine, began to scream and weep
• 0:12
Speaker 1: and beg, but all was of no use, for no
• 0:16
Speaker 1: houses were to be seen, and not a soul passed
• 0:19
Speaker 1: by on the road. Night came on A little because
• 0:24
Speaker 1: of the sharp pain in his legs, a little because
• 0:26
Speaker 1: of fright at finding himself alone in the darkness of
• 0:29
Speaker 1: the field. The marionette was about to faint when he
• 0:33
Speaker 1: saw a tiny glow worm flickering by. He called to
• 0:37
Speaker 1: her and said, dear little glowworm, will you set me free?
• 0:43
Speaker 1: Poor little fellow, replied the glow worm, stopping to look
• 0:47
Speaker 1: at him with pity. How came you to be caught
• 0:50
Speaker 1: in this trap? I stepped into this lonely field to
• 0:55
Speaker 1: take a few grapes, And are the grapes yours? No?
• 1:01
Speaker 1: Who has taught you to take things that do not
• 1:04
Speaker 1: belong to you? I was hungry. Hunger, my boy, is
• 1:09
Speaker 1: no reason for taking something which belongs to another. It's true,
• 1:15
Speaker 1: it's true, cried Pinocchio in tears. I won't do it again.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: Just then the conversation was interrupted by approaching footsteps. It
• 1:25
Speaker 1: was the owner of the field who was coming on
• 1:27
Speaker 1: tiptoes to see if, by chance he had caught the
• 1:31
Speaker 1: weasels which had been eating his chickens. Great was his
• 1:35
Speaker 1: surprise when holding up his lantern he saw that instead
• 1:39
Speaker 1: of a weasel, he had caught a boy. Ah, you
• 1:43
Speaker 1: little thief, said the farmer in an angry voice. So
• 1:47
Speaker 1: you are the one who steals my chickens. Not I, no, no,
• 1:51
Speaker 1: cried Pinocchio, sobbing bitterly. I came here only to take
• 1:55
Speaker 1: a very few grapes. He who steals grapes may very
• 2:00
Speaker 1: easily steal chickens. Also, take my word for it. I'll
• 2:04
Speaker 1: give you a lesson that you'll remember for a long while.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: He opened the trap, grabbed the marionette by the collar,
• 2:12
Speaker 1: and carried him to the house as if he were
• 2:14
Speaker 1: a puppy. When he reached the yard in front of
• 2:18
Speaker 1: the house, he flung him to the ground, put a
• 2:21
Speaker 1: foot on his neck, and said to him roughly, it
• 2:24
Speaker 1: is late now, and it's time for bed tomorrow. Will
• 2:27
Speaker 1: settle matters in the meantime. Since my watch dog died
• 2:31
Speaker 1: to day, you may take his place. And guard my
• 2:34
Speaker 1: hen house. No sooner said than done. He slipped the
• 2:39
Speaker 1: dog collar around Pinocchio's neck and tightened it so that
• 2:42
Speaker 1: it would not come off. A long iron chain was
• 2:46
Speaker 1: tied to the collar. The other end of the chain
• 2:48
Speaker 1: was nailed to the wall. If to night it should
• 2:52
Speaker 1: happen to rain, said the farmer, you can sleep in
• 2:55
Speaker 1: that little dog house near by, where you will find
• 2:58
Speaker 1: plenty of straw for a soft It has been Malampo's
• 3:03
Speaker 1: bed for three years, and it will be good enough
• 3:06
Speaker 1: for you. And if by any chance any thieves should come,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: be sure to bark. After this last morning, the farmer
• 3:15
Speaker 1: went into the house and closed the door and barred it.
• 3:20
Speaker 1: Poor Pinocchio huddled close to the dog house, more dead
• 3:23
Speaker 1: than alive from cold, hunger, and fright now and again
• 3:28
Speaker 1: he pulled and tugged at the collar, which nearly choked him,
• 3:31
Speaker 1: and cried out in a weak voice. I deserve it, Yes,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: I deserve it. I have been nothing but a truant
• 3:39
Speaker 1: and a vagabond. I have never obeyed anyone, and I
• 3:43
Speaker 1: have always done as I pleased. If I were only
• 3:46
Speaker 1: like so many others, and had studied and worked and
• 3:49
Speaker 1: stayed with my poor old father. I should not find
• 3:53
Speaker 1: myself here now, in this field and in the darkness,
• 3:57
Speaker 1: taking the place of a farmer's watchdog. Oh if I
• 4:01
Speaker 1: could start all over again. But what is done can't
• 4:05
Speaker 1: be undone, and I must be patient. After this little
• 4:09
Speaker 1: sermon to himself, which came from the very depths of
• 4:13
Speaker 1: his heart, Pinocchio went into the dog house and fell asleep.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: End of chapter twenty one.
