- 0:09Your travels have brought you to the Surfing
- 0:11Your Edge podcast, where we explore what it
- 0:14takes to create the bigger, bolder, badass life
- 0:17you know you were born for.
- 0:19Not a life that simply looks good on
- 0:21paper, and not another spin on the self
- 0:24-help hamster wheel.
- 0:25If you're ready for more joy, more peace,
- 0:28and more contribution, you're in the right place.
- 0:32I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:35Let's get surfing.
- 0:37Hello, and welcome to Surfing Your Edge.
- 0:41I'm Kristine.
- 0:42I'm so happy you're here.
- 0:44And today, I thought I would bore you
- 0:47with the little story of how I became
- 0:50the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:54So let's start.
- 0:56Um, let's see.
- 0:58I was 29 years old and still trying
- 1:03to figure out what to do with my
- 1:04life.
- 1:05I'd basically gotten two college degrees, lived in
- 1:10three different states at that point.
- 1:14Is that true?
- 1:14Yes, that's true.
- 1:15And had been trying out different jobs in
- 1:20the adult world, and was just finding that
- 1:24it was hard to figure out where I
- 1:26fit in.
- 1:27And I have a lot of passions, a
- 1:29lot of interests.
- 1:31I thought I was going to get a
- 1:33PhD until I realized that to be a
- 1:36PhD, you need to be a specialist, right?
- 1:39You've got to want to go really deep
- 1:42into one area.
- 1:44And that is just not me.
- 1:45I want to know a little bit about
- 1:48everything.
- 1:49And so I was not PhD material.
- 1:52I was not MD material.
- 1:53I was just not material for specialization.
- 2:00And because I had so many different interests,
- 2:03it was really hard for me to figure
- 2:05out if I should be a journalist.
- 2:08I got my master's in professional writing just
- 2:11as the first wave of newspapers were shutting
- 2:14down and firing everybody.
- 2:16So that kind of cut journalism out.
- 2:19And then it was like, well, maybe I
- 2:20should be a scientist.
- 2:22I'm crazy about the environment.
- 2:24I love marine environments.
- 2:26Maybe I should be a marine biologist.
- 2:29And I just went a writer.
- 2:34Anyway, I was all over the place trying
- 2:36out different things.
- 2:38And what I really hoped was that somebody
- 2:41somewhere knew where all of these passions and
- 2:45ideas and skills could make the biggest difference.
- 2:50So when I was 29, my husband found
- 2:54a two-page article in the newspaper inviting
- 2:58people to go on a cross-country bike
- 3:00trip from Seattle, Washington, to Washington, D.C.
- 3:03It was 3,200 and some odd miles.
- 3:07And it was a fundraiser for the American
- 3:10Lung Association.
- 3:11And at the time, I had pretty strong
- 3:15asthma.
- 3:16I was overweight, quite overweight.
- 3:19I didn't own a bike.
- 3:22And yet, I thought, oh, sure, let me
- 3:25just join this fundraiser for the American Lung
- 3:27Association, travel across the country on a bike,
- 3:31and somewhere in the middle of the Badlands
- 3:36or on some mountain peak somewhere, the universe
- 3:40will whisper in my ear, when you get
- 3:43off of this ride, you go home and
- 3:46you do this.
- 3:47You find this kind of company, apply for
- 3:50this kind of job, and all of your
- 3:53skills and passions and all of you can
- 3:58come to the table, right?
- 4:00And I thought, okay, this is the thing.
- 4:03I'm going to get quiet.
- 4:04The universe is going to speak.
- 4:06It's going to be amazing.
- 4:09And what do you think happened?
- 4:11I went on an amazing trip.
- 4:14I learned a lot about myself.
- 4:17I became, actually, even now, I was 29
- 4:22at the time.
- 4:23I'm 57 today.
- 4:24And I still think that I probably was
- 4:27the fullest expression of who I was at
- 4:29that time, of any time I've ever, of
- 4:33any time in my life, right?
- 4:34That I was most me then.
- 4:37I might be a different version of me
- 4:39now, but I was me.
- 4:42I was willing to say what I thought
- 4:44and feel comfortable no matter where I was.
- 4:48And even if people were challenging me, and
- 4:50they did, because of my asthma and because
- 4:54of the fact that I was a novice
- 4:56cyclist who didn't know what she was getting
- 4:58herself into, there were days when I did
- 5:02not ride.
- 5:03And I did not ride on the cross
- 5:05-country bike trip.
- 5:06And I was on a support and gear
- 5:08vehicle instead.
- 5:09And there were cyclists on that trip who
- 5:13thought that unless all 720 of us were
- 5:17riding every single mile, every single day, somehow,
- 5:21those of us who weren't participating that fully
- 5:24were diminishing the accomplishment of those people who
- 5:29were able and willing to go every, we
- 5:34called them every friggin' inchers, EFI.
- 5:36And so there were some tense moments where
- 5:40people were like, you're bringing us down.
- 5:43And I was like, no, I'm contributing from
- 5:45whatever part of the community I'm in.
- 5:48I'm either having some uplifting conversation on a
- 5:52bus, or I'm helping put up tents, or
- 5:54I'm doing something.
- 5:55Anyway, that was a digression.
- 5:58But the point of the story is that
- 6:00I went on this amazing trip and did
- 6:02not hear the whisper in my ear what
- 6:06I should do when I got off the
- 6:08ride.
- 6:08I had quit my job.
- 6:10I had no job to go back to.
- 6:12I had to figure out what I was
- 6:13going to do.
- 6:14And I had no clue.
- 6:17I was asking, what box do I fit
- 6:19in?
- 6:19I think you've probably heard me say this
- 6:21before.
- 6:21I was asking, what box do I fit
- 6:23in?
- 6:24And the answer I was getting, BU.
- 6:27And that did not make any sense to
- 6:30me.
- 6:30So I got off that ride, and I
- 6:32sank into the biggest depression of my life.
- 6:36And that's saying a lot, because I had
- 6:39already gone through a major depression in my
- 6:41early 20s when I was considering suicide.
- 6:46So to say that I spent another two
- 6:50years deeply depressed was very, very painful.
- 6:55And people would ask me, how was your
- 6:57ride?
- 6:58And it was like, I almost didn't want
- 7:00to tell them, because I felt like a
- 7:02failure.
- 7:02Because not only because I didn't ride every
- 7:04mile, but because my goal of figuring out
- 7:09who I was was not accomplished.
- 7:13So I came home, and I just kept
- 7:16struggling, right?
- 7:17I wrote a memoir about the cross-country
- 7:20bike trip.
- 7:21I got married.
- 7:23I, or, yeah, well, I was already married,
- 7:25but I had my wedding.
- 7:27I tried a couple of different jobs, and
- 7:31I just kept going.
- 7:34And for the next, oh, wow, 15 years
- 7:39or so, I just kept feeling like there
- 7:44was more.
- 7:45There had to be more.
- 7:47I could do more.
- 7:49I was helping one person put her ideas
- 7:51into the world, a very talented artist.
- 7:55And I wanted to help more people be
- 7:59able to put their ideas into the world.
- 8:00I wanted more people to feel empowered and
- 8:03to have the support that I could offer
- 8:06in figuring out what was next for them
- 8:11and what was possible.
- 8:13So around the year, I don't know, somewhere
- 8:20around the year 2005, I started learning about
- 8:25becoming a nomadic solopreneur.
- 8:29And I thought, oh, this is it, right?
- 8:31This is going to be me.
- 8:32I love travel.
- 8:33I love adventure.
- 8:36And I started researching.
- 8:37I hired a coach to help me figure
- 8:39out what my business would be.
- 8:42I read every book, read every podcast, and
- 8:45just spent a good solid 10 years learning,
- 8:52right, learning about how to build a business,
- 8:56learning about how to be a nomad.
- 8:59And yet I felt like I was not
- 9:04prepared to take the step to get moving
- 9:09on that path because I wasn't ready, right?
- 9:13I wasn't ready.
- 9:15There was so much more I needed to
- 9:17learn and have in place and, you know,
- 9:20finances figured out and all kinds of things.
- 9:23So I spent 10 years circling and going
- 9:26into a job that on many levels was
- 9:30helping me become the person I wanted to
- 9:33be.
- 9:33I was learning and growing and becoming more
- 9:35confident and learning solid marketing skills and business
- 9:41skills.
- 9:42And yet I was sick to my stomach
- 9:44almost every morning because I knew I was
- 9:49meant to be doing something else and I
- 9:51didn't have the courage to do it.
- 9:56And it just built and built and built.
- 9:58And I started doing this thing where I
- 10:00would say, okay, when I get these three
- 10:04projects completed for my employer, I will give
- 10:08my notice and I will start my job,
- 10:10my business, right?
- 10:12And I put that on the refrigerator and
- 10:16I'd look at it every day.
- 10:17And the little, you know, the deadline would
- 10:20come and go.
- 10:20I would have finished those three projects and
- 10:26yet there would be three more projects that
- 10:28will have popped up in the meantime.
- 10:30So then that piece of paper comes down
- 10:32and three new projects go up because, you
- 10:36know, I'm a person who does what she
- 10:38says she's going to do and I'm going
- 10:39to fulfill my commitments and I'm going to
- 10:41help my employer get these things into the
- 10:43world.
- 10:44And I also am scared and don't know
- 10:47what I'm doing and don't know where I'd
- 10:48start.
- 10:49So let's just keep rolling.
- 10:51And I rolled that commitment to myself forward
- 10:54and forward and forward.
- 10:56And I lost more and more confidence that
- 11:01I could fulfill a commitment that I made
- 11:07to myself.
- 11:08I was great at fulfilling commitments to other
- 11:11people.
- 11:12I could not fulfill a commitment to myself.
- 11:15So I started doing crazy things like signing
- 11:20up for a hundred mile bike trips, or
- 11:22actually I signed up for one that was
- 11:24200 miles.
- 11:25It was a Saturday and Sunday where you
- 11:27rode a hundred miles each day.
- 11:30And I'm like, you know, if I can
- 11:31do that, then I can prove to myself
- 11:33that I can follow through on a commitment
- 11:35that I make to myself.
- 11:36And so I would just go out and
- 11:38do insane things like beating my body up
- 11:41to prove to myself that I could follow
- 11:44through.
- 11:46And that was great and fun and gave
- 11:49me something to talk about and cool stories,
- 11:51but it didn't help me quit my job.
- 11:59It didn't help me start a business.
- 12:00It didn't help me even know where to
- 12:02start.
- 12:03And somewhere along the line, I heard the
- 12:09phrase, a path is made by walking.
- 12:13And I realized that I had been trying
- 12:15to figure out how to get from where
- 12:16I wanted to go from where I was
- 12:18to where I wanted to go.
- 12:20And I wanted to have a complete pathway.
- 12:23I didn't want to waste money or time.
- 12:26I didn't want to risk failure in front
- 12:28of other people.
- 12:29I wanted to just make my decision and
- 12:33follow my path and get there and succeed
- 12:35and jump through all the hoops and show
- 12:39that, hey, you're a talented, smart woman.
- 12:42You can figure this out.
- 12:43You can do it.
- 12:45That's what I wanted.
- 12:46And instead, what I saw was this black
- 12:49wall in front of me.
- 12:51I couldn't figure out.
- 12:52I wasn't even sure what was on the
- 12:54other side of it.
- 12:55What was it exactly that I was driving
- 12:57toward?
- 12:57I just knew there was more.
- 12:59There was something else out there.
- 13:03So that was the first story.
- 13:04Second story, there was a person who I
- 13:10think is very much like me, who I
- 13:12found online, who had gone all the way
- 13:16through and gotten her PhD in research, scientific
- 13:19research.
- 13:20And then in the middle of getting her
- 13:22PhD, realized she hated research and did not
- 13:27want to be a scientific researcher for the
- 13:29rest of her life.
- 13:31And so her blog was all about figuring
- 13:37out what she was going to do instead.
- 13:39And she likened herself to a lichen growing
- 13:44on a rock, right, where every day you
- 13:48wake up and you feel for the sun.
- 13:50Where's the sun?
- 13:51Let's grow toward the sun today.
- 13:54And that is how she figured out how
- 13:57she was going to be in the world.
- 13:58She got up every day, leaned into the
- 14:02sun.
- 14:05So those two things were kind of the
- 14:09pebble that got kicked down the mountain that
- 14:12got me moving.
- 14:15The other thing that got me moving was
- 14:19the universe got tired of me waiting and
- 14:22said, OK, fine, we are going to move
- 14:23you out of this situation and you're going
- 14:25to have to start over.
- 14:27My husband changed jobs and we had to
- 14:30move from our one state to another.
- 14:34And if I was going to continue to
- 14:37be married, I had to quit my job
- 14:39and move and start over.
- 14:41So that's how I really got going.
- 14:43But even then, there was more to grow,
- 14:49right?
- 14:49I started out with the idea that I
- 14:52would help older people, 40s and 50s, who
- 14:56had had a dream and had to put
- 15:00it on a shelf because they got busy
- 15:02with life and they had families and they
- 15:04had a career and they had things that
- 15:07they had to do in order to keep
- 15:08the lights on and food on the table.
- 15:10And yet this so this dream was in
- 15:12the background.
- 15:13And I had this idea that I could
- 15:16help these people look at who they are
- 15:18now, look at the resources that they've developed
- 15:21and re-envision what that dream might look
- 15:24like from their current position in life.
- 15:28And so that's how I started out helping
- 15:30people.
- 15:31And what I found was that there were,
- 15:33it was a rare individual who was willing
- 15:37to look at that dream and bring it
- 15:39forward again.
- 15:40Most people were pretty content with the fact
- 15:43that no, too late for that.
- 15:45And they put it on the shelf and
- 15:47they were happy to leave it there.
- 15:48So my business continued to evolve.
- 15:52And on the 20th, the 20th anniversary of
- 15:56that cross-country bike trip was coming up
- 15:58and I was 49 years old now.
- 16:00Yes.
- 16:01And I wanted to do something exciting and
- 16:05scary to commemorate that 20th, that cross-country
- 16:10bike trip.
- 16:11And obviously I didn't have the resources or
- 16:14the time to jump on a bike and
- 16:16go on a cross-country bike trip again.
- 16:19So I needed to figure out what the
- 16:21next step was.
- 16:22Turns out the next step was, I looked
- 16:28around at the thing that scared me the
- 16:29most and I had been afraid of open
- 16:32water my entire life.
- 16:34I was a strong swimmer and yet open
- 16:37water terrified me.
- 16:38And I had been doing cross-country, or
- 16:40not cross-country, I'd been doing sprint distance
- 16:43triathlons since the end of the bike ride,
- 16:46the big ride.
- 16:49Kind of as a way to help me
- 16:50get over that, but it hadn't quite worked.
- 16:52I would still get into open water and
- 16:54panic and have to overcome the panic in
- 16:56order to finish the race.
- 16:58So I was looking around and I said
- 17:01to a colleague at the time, I had
- 17:03taken a remote position, joined an amazing team
- 17:07of people.
- 17:08And I looked at a colleague and I
- 17:10said, you know, I'd really like to do
- 17:12something like take people to learn to surf
- 17:16because that scares me.
- 17:19And then we do this scary thing, we
- 17:23get out of our comfort zone, we learn
- 17:24about ourselves, and then we come home.
- 17:26And I coached them after the trip to
- 17:31actually put into place the vision that they
- 17:33had while they were out there learning about
- 17:35themselves on the surfing trip.
- 17:37But it can't be surfing.
- 17:38And they're like, well, why can't it be
- 17:40surfing?
- 17:41And I'm like, because I would be terrified
- 17:43and I can't be a leader and be
- 17:44terrified.
- 17:45And he said, why not?
- 17:49And so that is how the Surfing Your
- 17:51Edge brand was born.
- 17:52I had one brave client sign up to
- 17:56go with me to Panama to learn to
- 17:58surf.
- 17:58It was an eight-day adventure.
- 18:00And then we had a six-month adventure
- 18:04after that where we continued to work together
- 18:06to help her bring her new vision to
- 18:11life in her life.
- 18:12And this has already been quite a story,
- 18:16quite a long story.
- 18:18And if you're still with me, thank you.
- 18:20And if you would like to hear what
- 18:22happened in Panama when I went to learn
- 18:26to surf in the ocean during a lightning
- 18:29storm, join me for my next episode where
- 18:35we will continue the story and I will
- 18:37tell you a little bit more about the
- 18:40whole idea of what Surfing Your Edge really
- 18:43means to me and how it has transformed
- 18:46the lives of some of the people that
- 18:48I love most in the world.
