Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Why I Ditched Whole 30 (& Am Better For It)
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, emilya Badi here you are listening to the
- 0:24Speaker 1: ever lovely five minute Friday on Hurdle. It's always lovely
- 0:29Speaker 1: to have a moment to reconnect with you, the hurdlers.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I've had a mega productive week. I feel like things
- 0:36Speaker 1: are really rolling right now. When it comes to twenty
- 0:39Speaker 1: twenty four and twenty twenty four planning, it's all happening.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I'm starting to see the fruits of my labor, so
- 0:48Speaker 1: to speak, when it comes to the goals and intentions
- 0:51Speaker 1: that I set just a few weeks ago. And it's
- 0:55Speaker 1: exciting when you feel really aligned with what you've said
- 1:00Speaker 1: out to do, knowing that it is really something that
- 1:04Speaker 1: you genuinely want.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I think Quitter's day they call it, was this week.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And the only resolution that I have faltered on thus
- 1:15Speaker 1: far is doing whole thirty in January, and today I'm
- 1:19Speaker 1: going to tell you why. So I set out to
- 1:22Speaker 1: do a whole thirty at the beginning of the year.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I had a couple of good friends who were joining
- 1:29Speaker 1: me along for the ride, one of whom has done
- 1:32Speaker 1: the diet, if we want to call it that, before
- 1:36Speaker 1: and really enjoyed it. And she's talked about it so
- 1:39Speaker 1: often that I thought to myself, listen, I have this
- 1:44Speaker 1: big shoot that I'm doing at the end of this month.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I want to make sure I'm really eating well, taking
- 1:50Speaker 1: care of myself, investing in my mental health, my physical health,
- 1:54Speaker 1: my gut health, everything in January. And so I'm in,
- 1:59Speaker 1: let's do its together. And basically, I think thirteen or
- 2:04Speaker 1: maybe twelve or thirteen days into the month, I had
- 2:06Speaker 1: had no issues at all sticking with Whole thirty. In fact,
- 2:10Speaker 1: I thought it was pretty aligned with what my diet
- 2:13Speaker 1: typically looks like. I would say the only large differences
- 2:18Speaker 1: were that I cut out dairy aka cheese, and I
- 2:24Speaker 1: was nixing grains and bread. So that meant no toast
- 2:28Speaker 1: with breakfast, no quinoa on my salads, no quenwa with dinner,
- 2:34Speaker 1: rice pasta again, bread like, just some elements that candidly
- 2:40Speaker 1: at times I have previously felt guilty for eating. And
- 2:46Speaker 1: so I was like, I'm just gonna next season, it's
- 2:48Speaker 1: going to be really great for me. Oh and the
- 2:50Speaker 1: last thing I cannot forget is all like desserts. So
- 2:55Speaker 1: no more random ice cream bar from Yasso before where
- 3:00Speaker 1: I go to bed, no more chocolate, no random croissants
- 3:05Speaker 1: after a run, like things like this, no sweet treats,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and so I didn't have any negative feedback on the
- 3:12Speaker 1: way of eating until, like I said, day twelve thirteen,
- 3:16Speaker 1: I didn't have those like upfront headaches that people talked
- 3:19Speaker 1: about when it came to sugar withdrawal. Like I didn't
- 3:22Speaker 1: feel any of these symptoms, and I was eating a
- 3:24Speaker 1: fair amount of fruit on the diet. But come that
- 3:28Speaker 1: threshold of twelve thirteen, I developed a headache that I
- 3:32Speaker 1: still feel like I have at times. But for the
- 3:35Speaker 1: first forty eight hours it was so intense I couldn't
- 3:39Speaker 1: focus on anything. And on the third day, the third
- 3:44Speaker 1: morning I woke up, I spoke with a friend or
- 3:48Speaker 1: two that are both registered dietitians. I told them what
- 3:50Speaker 1: I was experiencing, and one of them basically said to me, Emily,
- 3:54Speaker 1: this is your body screaming. This is a red flag,
- 3:58Speaker 1: especially because I am currently training for a marathon, which
- 4:02Speaker 1: meant that I went from a place of being knee
- 4:05Speaker 1: deep in recovery practices. I've been dealing with knee tendonitis,
- 4:09Speaker 1: which has been really so much better lately. I'm so
- 4:12Speaker 1: grateful for it. Really putting in the work to feel
- 4:15Speaker 1: better in my body, and then I'm met with these
- 4:18Speaker 1: headaches from something that I'm choosing to do. I'm choosing
- 4:21Speaker 1: to do whole thirty, even though what I'm learning is
- 4:25Speaker 1: that maybe it isn't serving me how I'd hoped. And
- 4:28Speaker 1: so I did the best I could with the information
- 4:31Speaker 1: that I had, and I made the decision to take
- 4:35Speaker 1: care of me. And I'll be candid like that was
- 4:38Speaker 1: really challenging because I didn't want to.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Feel as though I failed.
- 4:42Speaker 1: But what I think really it was when I take
- 4:44Speaker 1: a look at the choice that I made to go
- 4:47Speaker 1: off of the program, was me getting information and doing
- 4:53Speaker 1: something about it rather than lingering in this malaise of
- 4:58Speaker 1: uncomfortable headaches and just not feeling my best. And really,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I believe that failing fast is a skill set that
- 5:07Speaker 1: a lot of people are scared to embrace. And again,
- 5:12Speaker 1: you know, as always when I say the words fail
- 5:15Speaker 1: in quotes on the show, it really means learning how
- 5:19Speaker 1: to pivot from where you're at and the opportunity to
- 5:23Speaker 1: learn something. And so I on that third day a
- 5:27Speaker 1: oatmeal in the morning, I think I had rice with
- 5:30Speaker 1: lunch and rice with dinner and really started to get
- 5:33Speaker 1: back the carbs that end up with sugar at the
- 5:36Speaker 1: end of the day back into my diet so that
- 5:39Speaker 1: I could give my body what it needs to fuel.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And this is really, you know, a lesson something that
- 5:45Speaker 1: happened to me that I'm proud of. I'm proud that
- 5:48Speaker 1: I quit whole thirty because again, I was doing what
- 5:52Speaker 1: I needed to do. And so my question for you
- 5:55Speaker 1: this month is is there something going on in your
- 5:58Speaker 1: life right now that you may be lying to yourself
- 6:01Speaker 1: about something that you could choose to quote unquote fail
- 6:05Speaker 1: fast at and then move forward. What is something that
- 6:10Speaker 1: you're doing right now that actually isn't serving you at all?
- 6:14Speaker 1: And now I'll listen to our question.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Hey, Emily Christine from Portland, Oregon. Here a long time hurdler.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Thanks so much for your great perspectives. I have been
- 6:24Speaker 3: empowered to reframe hurdle moments in my life thanks to
- 6:27Speaker 3: your thoughtful insights. I'm reaching out for some advice about
- 6:30Speaker 3: an upcoming trip. I'm heading to Orlando for the Olympic
- 6:33Speaker 3: Marathon trials and I'm excited about getting to see the
- 6:37Speaker 3: race in person. It should be awesome, but I'm also
- 6:40Speaker 3: a bit anxious since what was originally planned to be
- 6:42Speaker 3: a girlfriend's getaway, has turned into a solo trip. I
- 6:45Speaker 3: hope there will be opportunities to connect with and meet
- 6:48Speaker 3: new people during the weekend events, but who knows. I
- 6:51Speaker 3: know you've had a lot of great experiences with solo travel,
- 6:54Speaker 3: so I will be grateful for your advice and hopefully
- 6:57Speaker 3: some insider scoop on events for the big week in Orlando,
- 7:01Speaker 3: maybe a hurdler get together. Hope to see you there,
- 7:04Speaker 3: Thanks so much.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Hey, hey, ah, I love this. You might see me there.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Actually, I am going to be in town, although I'm
- 7:12Speaker 1: not hosting any events or any hurdler meetups, but I
- 7:15Speaker 1: certainly will be cheering TBD if I'm bringing the megaphone.
- 7:19Speaker 2: But it's going to be a good time now.
- 7:21Speaker 1: As for solo travel, yes, I've done a lot of it,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and I would say I have three big takeaways from
- 7:27Speaker 1: traveling on my own. First and foremost, I always bring
- 7:30Speaker 1: a book or a journal if I'm going to sit
- 7:32Speaker 1: down for a meal that's not like a fast casual situation,
- 7:37Speaker 1: for instance, maybe dinner, and I bring that because the
- 7:40Speaker 1: last thing I want to be doing when I'm out
- 7:42Speaker 1: to eat alone is sitting there on my phone scrolling
- 7:47Speaker 1: through social media. I want to be present with my surroundings.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I want to be able to look up and I
- 7:52Speaker 1: want to greet people, and I want to invest that
- 7:55Speaker 1: time in myself. If I'm traveling alone, I view that
- 7:59Speaker 1: as an an opportunity to date myself. And let me
- 8:04Speaker 1: tell you you are worthy of dating. The second takeaway
- 8:10Speaker 1: I have on social travel is you do want to
- 8:12Speaker 1: make sure that you pack your schedule or schedule something
- 8:15Speaker 1: that excites you. One thing in the morning and one
- 8:17Speaker 1: thing in the afternoon. When you are on your own,
- 8:20Speaker 1: it is a really great time and opportunity to meet people.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And also you get complete control over your schedule. So
- 8:30Speaker 1: in this instance, in particular, there's going to be so
- 8:33Speaker 1: much stuff happening in Orlando this weekend, on top of
- 8:37Speaker 1: of course Orlando being the home to Universal Studios and Disney.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So make something happen for yourself, find activities that excite you,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and make sure that you do whatever needs to happen
- 8:50Speaker 1: to set yourself up for success. And the last thing
- 8:54Speaker 1: I will say is just be open. It may be
- 8:58Speaker 1: a little different for you to be a little bit
- 9:00Speaker 1: more open to your surroundings, right to say hi to
- 9:04Speaker 1: someone on the street or compliment someone on what they
- 9:07Speaker 1: might be wearing. But in this instance, you're on your
- 9:10Speaker 1: own and it is a really, really great opportunity to
- 9:15Speaker 1: make some new friends. This is one of those situations,
- 9:18Speaker 1: what's the worst thing that's going to happen.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You're going to be exactly back where you started.
- 9:22Speaker 1: If the worst thing that's going to happen is you
- 9:25Speaker 1: pipe up and try to strike up a conversation with
- 9:28Speaker 1: someone or ask about programming later in the day, or
- 9:31Speaker 1: whatever the case may be, and they're not into it.
- 9:34Speaker 1: A they're a jerk, but B you're exactly where you
- 9:38Speaker 1: started and that place it's not so bad after all.
- 9:41Speaker 1: So embrace this time for you. Use it as a
- 9:43Speaker 1: self care moment. Also, such an exciting weekend to cheer
- 9:46Speaker 1: on so many amazing humans, and I trust and know
- 9:51Speaker 1: that it will be a lot of fun, a trip
- 9:53Speaker 1: that you will definitely remember. That's it for this week
- 9:58Speaker 1: at Emily a Body and at Hurdle p Podcast, another
- 10:01Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
