- 0:00Speaker 1: Do you know.
- 0:08Speaker 2: On this week in 1990, the very first episode of
- 0:11Speaker 2: Beverly Hills 90210 aired, featuring the cast of mostly middle-aged
- 0:16Speaker 2: actors portraying high school students. It lasted 293 episodes. This
- 0:21Speaker 2: is approximately twice the number of No Dribble episodes that
- 0:25Speaker 2: have aired so far, which is curious because a little-known
- 0:28Speaker 2: fact about No Dribble is that All three hosts are
- 0:30Speaker 2: actually high school students pretending to be middle-aged women. You're
- 0:36Speaker 2: on No Dribble, strap in! Hello and welcome to No Dribble,
- 0:52Speaker 2: the podcast where we talk about netball. We talk about
- 0:54Speaker 2: so much more. My name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'm Kath Cox. I am actually 23.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I'm Liz Ellis and I'm 15 next birthday.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Oh, that's exciting.
- 1:04Speaker 3: It's so exciting. I'm the only silver-haired 14-year-old in the county.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I'm sure there's other places. Yeah, that was crazy, wasn't it?
- 1:13Speaker 3: That was so crazy.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Gabrielle Carteris was 29 when they filmed the pilot, so
- 1:17Speaker 2: she played Andrea Zuckerman.
- 1:19Speaker 1: As an 18-year-old?
- 1:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 2: No, they were like 15 or 16 because remember they
- 1:25Speaker 2: were in high school for a few years in this one.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Was Andrea Zuckerman the like nerdy?
- 1:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Like newspaper, yeah, she always struck me as horny.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Would we say nerdy or would we say, you know, short,
- 1:39Speaker 2: smart girl?
- 1:40Speaker 3: I mean, I identify as a nerd, so I think
- 1:45Speaker 3: it's a compliment.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So which Beverly Hills 90210 character would you be most like?
- 1:52Speaker 3: None. Ooh, really? Like zero? Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Because you are a bit of a mole. Well, that's
- 1:59Speaker 1: not where I was going, but sure.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So Shannon Doherty or Brenda Walsh, the character she played.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Brenda. Oh, but Brenda. I couldn't think of
- 2:06Speaker 1: what her name was.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Brenda and Brandon.
- 2:09Speaker 3: That's right. Who did Jenny Garth play? What was her character?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 2:13Speaker 3: The blonde one.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yep, got her straight in. So there was Dylan, Brenda and.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Oh, and Tori Spelling was in it too, wasn't she?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Tori Spelling was in it.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, she was the original Nepo baby. Well, I just.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Read she auditioned under another name, allegedly to not be
- 2:33Speaker 2: given favourite status.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Kelly.
- 2:37Speaker 2: What? That's hysterical. Yeah, so allegedly she wasn't cast because
- 2:44Speaker 2: her surname is Spelling. So maybe we need some justice
- 2:49Speaker 2: for Tori Spelling.
- 2:50Speaker 1: So who did Tori's spelling play?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Donna Martin.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Donna.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Donna Martin graduates. Donna Martin graduates.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And then Donna was dating Green, was his actual name.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah, Brian.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Donna and David. Brian Austin Green. David Silver.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Brian Austin Green, that's right.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And then there was just Steve, played by Ian Ziering.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Steve was my favourite.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Really?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Was he? Yeah, he was my crush. You know how
- 3:13Speaker 1: everyone was into.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Dylan or Brandon. See, he's my Ross Geller. I just think, no,
- 3:17Speaker 2: you're my least favourite out of the whole family.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Okay, well, here's a good conversation if we're going down
- 3:21Speaker 1: that path. So is he your least favourite friend or
- 3:25Speaker 1: just to look at of the boys?
- 3:28Speaker 2: What are you talking about? I think Ross Geller behaved
- 3:30Speaker 2: appallingly through the whole series.
- 3:35Speaker 1: So he's your least favourite?
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. What?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Oh, it is hard to pick a least favourite. No,
- 3:40Speaker 1: it's not.
- 3:41Speaker 2: No, Ross Geller is atrocious.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Who's yours, Elizabeth? I don't know, I liked them all.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I don't know if I've got a least favourite.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Oh, my God. I do.
- 3:49Speaker 2: He says someone else's name when he's at the altar
- 3:52Speaker 2: with Emily, the British girl, then goes away, is about
- 3:56Speaker 2: to go on his honeymoon with Rachel, whose name he
- 4:00Speaker 2: has said, and then Emily rings and he goes, oh,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I'm not getting on the plane with Rachel. Atrocious, atrocious
- 4:07Speaker 2: red flags, Ross Gellar.
- 4:09Speaker 1: There you go. Okay, fair enough.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Wow, you might have convinced me. I might go with
- 4:12Speaker 3: you on that one.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Oh, I love that show.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So my daughter is right in a Friends phase at
- 4:19Speaker 2: the moment, so it's on much more than it ever
- 4:21Speaker 2: has been. And it is funny.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a great show. I reckon I could quote
- 4:26Speaker 1: nearly every episode.
- 4:28Speaker 2: We should go to a Friends trivia night.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Oh, I've been to one. There was one on the
- 4:31Speaker 1: cruise when we went on the cruise. Please don't say
- 4:34Speaker 1: cruise to me. I know, I can't.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Although I have started reading the cruise. I'm reading Naima
- 4:38Speaker 2: Brown's book, The Cruise, and thoroughly enjoying it so far.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And it's about a cruise.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Oh, yes.
- 4:44Speaker 2: No, it's about a reality TV show called The Cruise.
- 4:47Speaker 3: The Cruise.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It happens to be on a boat but it's not, yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I know there are many dribblers who love cruises and
- 4:54Speaker 2: I come to this from a position of complete ignorance
- 4:57Speaker 2: but I will probably never get smarter about cruises. I
- 5:01Speaker 2: did go on one once but that was to Antarctica
- 5:04Speaker 2: and it's the only way to get.
- 5:05Speaker 3: There, so.
- 5:07Speaker 1: See, yeah, I mean I was a hater the whole
- 5:09Speaker 1: time and I went on one and converted. So don't
- 5:12Speaker 1: rule it out. Can I shock you just off the
- 5:15Speaker 1: back of what we were just talking about there?
- 5:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I started reading another book, everybody.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Really, truly?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Is it April the 1st? What's going on here?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Actually started reading a book.
- 5:27Speaker 2: What is it?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Off the back of my trip to Bali.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Right, yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Chatting with Gordylicious around the pool with a beer in hand.
- 5:34Speaker 1: She said there's actually a really good book. written about
- 5:37Speaker 1: the drug culture in Bali, the snowing in Bali. I
- 5:41Speaker 1: bought it because that's the kind of book that I'm into,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you know. As you mentioned on Wednesday's episode, the prostitutes
- 5:47Speaker 1: in Pompeii or however you put that. It's interesting. You
- 5:51Speaker 1: can have it after me if you'd like. Okay. You
- 5:54Speaker 1: don't sound overly.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Have you read Marching Powder?
- 5:56Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 5:57Speaker 1: No.
- 5:57Speaker 3: It's a great book. Rusty Young. It's a great book.
- 6:00Speaker 3: It's old, but it's fantastic. It's about, you know, the
- 6:02Speaker 3: drug in Bolivia. Yes. I think I have.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I can't remember it.
- 6:07Speaker 3: That's great. I might have borrowed it to you, loaned
- 6:08Speaker 3: it to you. But anyway, there you go.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Don't lend books. Make people go to the library. It
- 6:13Speaker 2: helps the author.
- 6:14Speaker 3: This is true.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yes, you did say that.
- 6:16Speaker 3: It is nice when you get your little library sort
- 6:18Speaker 3: of refunding thing.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Public lending.
- 6:20Speaker 1: How often does that come and does it come in coins?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Is it twice a year?
- 6:25Speaker 3: I get mine once a year. Maybe my books aren't
- 6:27Speaker 3: quite as prolific as yours, but I get the public
- 6:29Speaker 3: lending right and educational lending right, so schools and public libraries.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's great. It's just a nice little bonus every year
- 6:36Speaker 3: because your books are in lots of libraries.
- 6:39Speaker 4: It is.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Mine tends to be mid-year anyhow.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think mine's mid-year too. Right.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Well, actually, I'm pleased that you're reading Nye's book, The Cruise,
- 6:50Speaker 3: because she was the reason that I actually didn't watched
- 6:52Speaker 3: the grand final, the rugby league grand final.
- 6:55Speaker 2: You didn't watch it.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Can I ask you a question?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Do you turn it over and watch even a second
- 7:00Speaker 1: of it just to say you watched it though?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I watched a little bit of the first half.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I had intended to watch it.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I was on the couch from four o'clock watching the NRLW,
- 7:10Speaker 2: which was sensational. Can I talk about Tamika Upton? She
- 7:13Speaker 2: won the Dallium medal for the third consecutive year. Amazing.
- 7:18Speaker 2: That is amazing. Once in a generation talent. That is
- 7:22Speaker 2: just extraordinary. Unfortunately, she couldn't then back it up with
- 7:25Speaker 2: a grand final win. The Roosters convincingly beat the Broncos
- 7:30Speaker 2: in that. But, yeah, I was on the couch for hours.
- 7:33Speaker 2: We made pies.
- 7:36Speaker 3: It was all good.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Do you make pastry from scratch for your pies?
- 7:38Speaker 3: Of course not.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Okay, great. Let's get back to the footy. Did you
- 7:42Speaker 1: see the bling? I mean, Roosters cleaned up, obviously. The
- 7:45Speaker 1: girls get a championship ring too now, as do the boys.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Fuck!
- 7:50Speaker 1: Out.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I haven't seen it.
- 7:52Speaker 3: They're mental.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'll Google one for you whilst you're chatting.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Yes, they're very. Anyway, I had intended to, but then
- 7:57Speaker 3: one of my girlfriends is Canadian and she had Canadian
- 8:01Speaker 3: Thanksgiving on Sunday, which is fabulous. It's a beautiful long
- 8:05Speaker 3: table set. And it's just, there would have been 40
- 8:08Speaker 3: of us at this long table and they live on
- 8:10Speaker 3: a farm. And I feel whenever we go to her
- 8:13Speaker 3: place for Thanksgiving, I feel like I'm on a television show.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I feel like I'm much fancier than I actually am.
- 8:18Speaker 3: And we all bring food and it all gets laid
- 8:20Speaker 3: out on the table and it's a heap of fun.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And Nye was there and we were chatting about her
- 8:25Speaker 3: book and the work that she's sort of doing to
- 8:27Speaker 3: promote it. And she was very excited about the dribblers
- 8:30Speaker 3: hearing about it. So that was good. And then I
- 8:33Speaker 3: just got sidetracked and I just didn't get around to
- 8:35Speaker 3: watching the football. And there were a group of people,
- 8:38Speaker 3: mainly the kids, watching the footy. And I went in
- 8:40Speaker 3: to sort of glance at it. I sort of watched
- 8:42Speaker 3: it while it was nil all and then saw nothing
- 8:44Speaker 3: after that. So I miss the entertainment, the grand final entertainment.
- 8:49Speaker 3: It was wonderful.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I know that I spent a lot of time laughing
- 8:52Speaker 2: at the NRL not having anyone and the whole Tones
- 8:56Speaker 2: and I debacle, which I did laugh at some stage.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm hearing in the stadium them playing Dance Monkey, so
- 9:03Speaker 2: it was crazy. But it was.
- 9:07Speaker 2: If you're not following NRL, you probably are aware of
- 9:10Speaker 2: this anyway. So Jai Arrow has motor neurone disease and then, buddy, tragically,
- 9:15Speaker 2: Nathan Charles, former Wallaby, has also just recently been diagnosed
- 9:19Speaker 2: with motor neurone disease. And there is a really strange
- 9:23Speaker 2: correlation between motor neurone disease and elite athletes that science
- 9:29Speaker 2: has still not yet understood. But setting that aside, which is...
- 9:35Speaker 2: and looking at what the grand final entertainment was, they
- 9:38Speaker 2: decided to do a celebration of Jai Arrow and they
- 9:42Speaker 2: invited Nathan Charles to be part of that. So they
- 9:44Speaker 2: were driven around the edge of the field while Amy Shark,
- 9:50Speaker 2: Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets, who of course are
- 9:52Speaker 2: a Newcastle band, Phil Jamison from Grin Spoon, someone from
- 9:58Speaker 2: Peking Dark and someone from another band, I can't remember,
- 10:01Speaker 2: but this super group came together. They did You'll Never
- 10:05Speaker 2: Walk Alone, which was just beautiful. I'm crying through the
- 10:08Speaker 2: whole damn thing. And then they did What's Up for non-blondes.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I didn't understand quite the significance of that, but it
- 10:15Speaker 2: was cool. But then they finished with Simply the Best,
- 10:17Speaker 2: which of course you'll remember was that amazing campaign that
- 10:19Speaker 2: Tina Turner did for the National Rugby League 25 years ago,
- 10:24Speaker 2: whenever it was. But it was just so good. It
- 10:29Speaker 2: was just there was I don't like I loved watching Kylie.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm not as much of an AFL person. I love
- 10:36Speaker 2: the NRL. I loved watching Kylie and then I thoroughly
- 10:39Speaker 2: enjoyed the AFL game. I loved watching this for the NRL.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I don't feel like I lost anything. I feel like
- 10:45Speaker 2: they were two totally different approaches. And in fact, actually,
- 10:49Speaker 2: I feel like Tones and I would have been a
- 10:52Speaker 2: paler version of the Kylie thing, but actually NRL, we're
- 10:55Speaker 2: going somewhere completely different with this.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Was really good.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And then when the Roosters won, they had a junior
- 11:00Speaker 2: club called the Roosters give them their ring, which I
- 11:05Speaker 2: thought was nice. Oh, wow.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It is bling, bling, bling, bling, bling, bling.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Take it up closer to the camera.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Covered in diamonds. Look at that.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So tacky, though, really, isn't it?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Oh, I mean, it totally is. Well, you're not rocking
- 11:21Speaker 1: around wearing that, are you?
- 11:23Speaker 3: I don't know. Would it get you free stuff? I'd
- 11:25Speaker 3: wear it if it got me free stuff.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Well, for a period of time, it 100% would. Didn't
- 11:27Speaker 1: it get us hot chips after the Commonwealth Games in Manchester?
- 11:31Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 11:32Speaker 1: We had our medals. It gave us hot chips.
- 11:34Speaker 3: No, I went to a place in Manchester with my
- 11:36Speaker 3: medal and I wanted a kebab and an old mate said, no,
- 11:38Speaker 3: I'm not giving out free kebabs because you Australians have
- 11:42Speaker 3: all got gold medals. And he said, I'll give you
- 11:44Speaker 3: chicken and... beef for the price of chicken yeah i've got.
- 11:47Speaker 1: A discount it's a win i'm sure i've been given
- 11:50Speaker 1: hot chips somewhere before because i.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Would have been my gold medal in rowing at the
- 11:54Speaker 2: pan pacific masters games in 20 maybe 19 i want
- 11:58Speaker 2: to say they didn't give us free drinks at the
- 12:00Speaker 2: bar we did.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Ask It's always worth asking.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I lost a bet. I had to say to the bartender,
- 12:06Speaker 2: are you giving free drinks to medalists?
- 12:09Speaker 3: Disappointing.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You want something for free. Anyway, but like what a
- 12:12Speaker 1: story that grand final was.
- 12:13Speaker 2: What a story.
- 12:13Speaker 1: How great. You know, Newcastle hadn't been there for 25
- 12:16Speaker 1: years and then the Roosters with all the retirements or
- 12:18Speaker 1: people leaving the game was such a great.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And what an unspeakable bloody tragedy what happened in Newcastle
- 12:25Speaker 2: with that car running into the, the only thing I just,
- 12:29Speaker 2: at first I thought someone had done it deliberately and
- 12:32Speaker 2: this just sounds like an enormous mistake from an, Probably
- 12:37Speaker 2: an idiot by the sounds of things, but certainly a
- 12:39Speaker 2: young man, a pea-plater, but it just could not be
- 12:44Speaker 2: more bloody, tragic, poor bastard. So anyway, very sad. Well,
- 12:49Speaker 2: I've ruined it, haven't I? You have. Shall we take
- 12:52Speaker 2: a break and come back and talk about some Nigeria?
- 12:54Speaker 4: Yes, we should.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Some Nepal? All right. All right, we're going to talk
- 13:09Speaker 2: about some netball and I'm going to play you another
- 13:11Speaker 2: one of the interviews that I did on, I don't
- 13:15Speaker 2: know what day was it, last Thursday.
- 13:17Speaker 1: At the ASICS dress launch for the new Australian Diamonds
- 13:22Speaker 1: Match Dress, which they will debut at the Constellation Cup.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It was fabulous.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And the girls still had their European tans, so they
- 13:30Speaker 1: were rocking it.
- 13:30Speaker 2: They did still have their European tans. I didn't get
- 13:32Speaker 2: to interview Sophie Dwyer, but I did get to talk
- 13:34Speaker 2: to her afterwards.
- 13:35Speaker 3: God, she's good.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah. They're all just so lovely.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, apparently. And Mark Falvo, who is the CEO of
- 13:40Speaker 2: Netball Australia, was telling me that Sophie was at the
- 13:44Speaker 2: nine upfronts. So if you don't know what the upfronts are,
- 13:47Speaker 2: in the entertainment industry they have a giant launch every year,
- 13:51Speaker 2: all bells, whistles, everything fabulous. showing what they're going to be,
- 13:55Speaker 2: what they will have on their channel the next year.
- 13:58Speaker 3: And it's basically for advertisers to say, here's what we've
- 14:00Speaker 3: got coming up.
- 14:02Speaker 1: The netball.
- 14:03Speaker 2: And Sophie was there presenting with Tim Horan, who's former Wallaby,
- 14:08Speaker 2: about the nine sport rota and apparently did a sensational job.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Of course. Yay, Sophie.
- 14:15Speaker 2: But let me just tell you some other good news.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Remember last week we were talking about young Samuel in
- 14:20Speaker 2: Ballarat and how he was finding it difficult to get
- 14:23Speaker 2: pathways as a boy because aging out of being able
- 14:27Speaker 2: to play in just a standard team down there. Anyway,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I was contacted by Katrina out of Ballarat who coaches
- 14:35Speaker 2: the under-15s girls team, wanting to introduce him to the
- 14:38Speaker 2: coach of the under-15s boys team, offering to work with
- 14:41Speaker 2: him on some skills stuff and a whole range of
- 14:44Speaker 2: other things that he can access down there. So Samuel
- 14:48Speaker 2: has been in touch with them and, you know, sky's
- 14:52Speaker 2: the limit. Samuel as a netballer now. So I thought
- 14:55Speaker 2: that was lovely and thanks for making contact, Katrina. And
- 14:58Speaker 2: I have been asked to give a hello to the
- 15:00Speaker 2: Santa Monica Spirits. Hello, Santa Monica spirits. Although I give
- 15:03Speaker 2: the hello to the American teams and you get the
- 15:06Speaker 2: trip to the United States.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Well, I was a bit of a dog with a
- 15:08Speaker 1: bone with this one.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Were you? Yes.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Netball Nationals is in Vegas and I just knew I
- 15:13Speaker 1: had to be there. So I am confirmed going to
- 15:16Speaker 1: Vegas in November.
- 15:17Speaker 2: That's fantastic. I'm excited. Sorry, will we do your job
- 15:20Speaker 2: here that week as well? I can probably dial in.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I know. Well, maybe that.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Would be great. Do you remember the last time you
- 15:27Speaker 3: went to Vegas?
- 15:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:28Speaker 3: And you probably need the people who were there to
- 15:30Speaker 3: pick you up in the stretch limo to get you again,
- 15:32Speaker 3: wouldn't you?
- 15:32Speaker 1: I agree. So what are you going to do about that?
- 15:35Speaker 3: That would be Matthew and me.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Right, okay.
- 15:38Speaker 3: That's really likely given now we've got, you know, two
- 15:40Speaker 3: urchins who would insist on coming with us and, you know, it.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Wouldn't be the same. If Evelyn and Austin get taken
- 15:47Speaker 2: to the United States out of me acknowledging the Texas
- 15:52Speaker 2: blue bells, blue bottles, blue bonnets, I'm going to be
- 15:57Speaker 2: seriously pissed.
- 15:59Speaker 3: By the way. But you should come. I mean, anyway.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Okay, let's all go. I imagine Netball USA has an
- 16:05Speaker 2: enormous amount of money to be flying smartasses from around
- 16:09Speaker 2: the world.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Well, I will be there in a– Professional smartasses.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Professional smartasses.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 16:15Speaker 3: We do this well.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I will be there in a commentary role and a
- 16:18Speaker 1: bit of just a– hi guys and you know doing
- 16:21Speaker 1: whatever role julie fitzgerald is coming as well so we're
- 16:25Speaker 1: flying over and back together she's going to be over
- 16:27Speaker 1: there working with some of the coaches.
- 16:28Speaker 2: It'll be good fun amazing yeah we booked.
- 16:30Speaker 1: A show at the sphere Oh, great.
- 16:32Speaker 2: What are you going to say?
- 16:33Speaker 1: Oh, I was devastated. I miss like literally either side,
- 16:37Speaker 1: Backstreet Boys. I miss them by a week and the Eagles. Oh,
- 16:42Speaker 1: my God.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I know. What are you going to say?
- 16:44Speaker 1: I was devastated. So the only actual concert that was
- 16:48Speaker 1: on whilst I was there was was Metallica, which I
- 16:54Speaker 1: know it would be insane, except I think that like
- 16:58Speaker 1: one of the shows started at 11 p.m. or something. Oh, no,
- 17:00Speaker 1: you can't do that. It was 600 U.S. a ticket.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But during the day they do have the Wizard of
- 17:06Speaker 1: Oz that they do and apparently your seats move and
- 17:08Speaker 1: there's wind machines and it's like you're actually in it.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I'm excited.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Don't knock it.
- 17:14Speaker 1: It was Metallica or the Wizard of Oz.
- 17:16Speaker 2: That's the latest thing I've ever heard.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I had to go and see something at the Sphere.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I had one day, so that's what's happening.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going to go and see Wicked Ewhack at
- 17:26Speaker 2: the Sphere.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I had no idea where you were taking that, but
- 17:30Speaker 3: I sure as shit didn't see the Wizard of Oz.
- 17:34Speaker 2: It's happening, guys. I'm so much less jealous now.
- 17:39Speaker 1: That'd be great.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I'll happily stay here and do this podcast.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I'm excited. Don't knock it.
- 17:44Speaker 2: That is so funny.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I think I would have taken Metallica.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Well, I would have.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Well, that's fabulous. I'm excited for you. Oh, man.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Apart from that, I know.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Anyway, were we going to play an interview from?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Well, we were, but let me tell you about something
- 18:05Speaker 2: else first. Or shall we do that first? Let's listen
- 18:09Speaker 2: to some unsensible talk for a moment.
- 18:11Speaker 1: That was so 15 minutes ago.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Oh, my God. So, again, we had the launch on
- 18:18Speaker 2: last Thursday. So ASICS has been supporting Netball Australia for
- 18:21Speaker 2: over 20 years.
- 18:23Speaker 3: 25 years.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So that is amazing. So it was a celebration of
- 18:26Speaker 2: that long-term partnership. They had... shoes on the table with
- 18:31Speaker 2: flowers in it beautiful so great.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Yeah sometimes the shoes at my house grow mold so
- 18:36Speaker 3: it's really good.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Well anyway i got a bit excited when i got
- 18:42Speaker 2: to do this interview okay well this is very exciting
- 18:46Speaker 2: for me because i get to meet uh one of
- 18:49Speaker 2: my personal heroes uh tell me amy parmenter why are
- 18:53Speaker 2: you in town I'm.
- 18:54Speaker 4: In town for the ASICS dress launch and it has
- 18:58Speaker 4: been a great morning at Chiswick, one of my favorite spots.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Did I hear you say you got married here?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah, literally in December last year. Went to the registry
- 19:05Speaker 4: and then came to Chiswick for lunch. It is a
- 19:08Speaker 4: beautiful spot. The food is amazing and it's gorgeous.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Where's the registry now?
- 19:11Speaker 3: Is it still in?
- 19:12Speaker 4: It's down in like Pyrmont. Oh, okay.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Because I got married at the registry when it was
- 19:16Speaker 2: in Chippendale, but I drove past the other day and
- 19:18Speaker 2: saw that it's closed.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 19:19Speaker 2: You know, things change in 20 years apparently. Well, nice
- 19:23Speaker 2: to have you back at the scene of the crime.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Scene of the crime.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Okay, so this is just a random question for you.
- 19:30Speaker 2: What is the most important position on a netball court
- 19:34Speaker 2: and why? Oh, no brainer.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Well, I have to say wing defence.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I didn't expect you to say that, but I agree.
- 19:42Speaker 4: No, I'm not sure I can take the most important,
- 19:44Speaker 4: but I think– It's pretty up there. In terms of
- 19:47Speaker 4: how much it gets underrated, I think that it's definitely undervalued.
- 19:51Speaker 4: There's lots of benefits to wing defences. We were just
- 19:53Speaker 4: with all these little kids and I was like, any
- 19:54Speaker 4: wing defences? And they were like, no i was like
- 19:57Speaker 4: well at that age you don't want to be a
- 20:00Speaker 4: goal attack at that age but.
- 20:01Speaker 2: It's like girls girls stick your hand up the wing
- 20:04Speaker 2: defense on rep trial day so you'll get more.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Exactly you've got way less opposition.
- 20:09Speaker 2: So so when did you become a wing defense.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Well, I was a goalkeeper all through my junior years.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Seriously?
- 20:16Speaker 3: Seriously.
- 20:16Speaker 4: And I did not keep growing and then eventually got
- 20:20Speaker 4: told out to be a wing defence and I was
- 20:22Speaker 4: not happy about it. I fought it for a while,
- 20:24Speaker 4: thought I might be able to change the system and
- 20:27Speaker 4: I couldn't. So, yeah, slowly went into wing defence and
- 20:29Speaker 4: now I love it. Wing defence is great because you
- 20:31Speaker 4: go out for a contest. If you miss it, there's
- 20:32Speaker 4: still two more people behind you.
- 20:34Speaker 3: That's right. It's not your job. I'll do my best, guys,
- 20:37Speaker 3: but ultimately, yeah, that's on you.
- 20:40Speaker 2: So, have you ever played in attack?
- 20:43Speaker 4: I've played a bit of centre and then we were
- 20:45Speaker 4: talking about this last week but I have played a
- 20:46Speaker 4: little bit of wing attack back in my Giants. The
- 20:48Speaker 4: Giants were a little while there but not much.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Very good.
- 20:53Speaker 2: And do you like Melbourne?
- 20:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I do except coming back here on a 27
- 20:56Speaker 4: degree day and going for a swim up one day,
- 20:58Speaker 4: I'm like, oh.
- 20:58Speaker 3: It's nice.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I was just talking to Georgie and she said the
- 21:01Speaker 2: only parts of Sydney she's ever seen are Sydney Olympic
- 21:03Speaker 2: Park and I said, oh, we've got to change that.
- 21:05Speaker 2: That's the thing.
- 21:06Speaker 4: All the girls when we come, we stay out in
- 21:08Speaker 4: Parramatta Olympic Park and they haven't seen the you know,
- 21:11Speaker 4: the beaches or this side of Sydney and it is
- 21:15Speaker 4: pretty amazing, you know, you forget. But, yeah, I miss
- 21:18Speaker 4: this part of Sydney.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Well, welcome home. You look pretty happy in that land though.
- 21:23Speaker 2: That looks like a pretty tight, happy place. team right oh.
- 21:28Speaker 4: It's been awesome and I think just you know sort
- 21:30Speaker 4: of the vision that we talked about at the start
- 21:32Speaker 4: three years ago and seeing that really come to life
- 21:35Speaker 4: in the last sort of eight months has been really
- 21:37Speaker 4: special I think you know Shay the GM she was
- 21:41Speaker 4: she is incredible and I'm just so excited to see
- 21:44Speaker 4: what her next adventure is because I'm pretty sure it's
- 21:46Speaker 4: going to be And then, yeah, I just think the
- 21:50Speaker 4: way they've aligned, like we have such genuine partnerships with
- 21:52Speaker 4: all the brands. We love doing Netball differently. I think
- 21:55Speaker 4: it's exciting. And, you know, today's actually the first day
- 21:58Speaker 4: of the Sirens coming on board too with SEM. I
- 22:00Speaker 4: think it really is exciting for the game. I think
- 22:02Speaker 4: it's what it needs. Hachi's got great ideas and he
- 22:05Speaker 4: loves the game. So, yeah, it's heading in the right direction.
- 22:07Speaker 4: And I think a bit more of that is going
- 22:09Speaker 4: to continue to grow the sport and new audiences.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Excellent. Well, thank you, Amy Parmenter. This is quite a
- 22:15Speaker 2: momentous day for me. You know, like I can often
- 22:18Speaker 2: talk to people who are in goal circles, but whatever.
- 22:21Speaker 3: You know, get their wing defence.
- 22:23Speaker 4: So you buy your wing defence now?
- 22:25Speaker 1: Oh, gosh.
- 22:25Speaker 3: You look like you can play.
- 22:27Speaker 4: I'm a crossfitter now. I'd protect my knees.
- 22:28Speaker 3: I was going to say, you look fit and strong.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So nice.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 22:33Speaker 4: All right.
- 22:33Speaker 1: There you go.
- 22:34Speaker 3: How good.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Notice how she didn't ask Georgie Horges Wednesday's episode what
- 22:38Speaker 1: her best position was or what she thought was the
- 22:41Speaker 1: most important position on the court?
- 22:42Speaker 2: No, because I'm not interested.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Targeted audience.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Absolutely. Great chat, though. And what she's done is just
- 22:48Speaker 2: remind me of that thing that I forgot that I
- 22:50Speaker 2: was going to talk about on Wednesday. Oh, the sirens.
- 22:51Speaker 2: It was about the sirens, yeah, because I don't know anything.
- 22:55Speaker 2: It's kind of like– I've received, so my contact there
- 22:58Speaker 2: has gone quiet. I'm still, I'm chasing someone else down
- 23:01Speaker 2: though at the moment. But it has just been a
- 23:03Speaker 2: kind of email to members. I know that there are
- 23:06Speaker 2: a lot of the dribblers who were there on the first, on,
- 23:09Speaker 2: you know, waiting for news. And it has been, it's
- 23:13Speaker 2: been a bit quiet. So I don't know any more
- 23:16Speaker 2: than you do, but I will try to find out
- 23:18Speaker 2: what I can.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Liz Ellis, how's this having a conversation with this young
- 23:21Speaker 1: lady on Thursday at the ASIC stress launch? And she
- 23:24Speaker 1: tells me that she is actually going to support both
- 23:27Speaker 1: sides but is jumping ship to the sirens.
- 23:31Speaker 3: To the sirens.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I thought I'd made that very clear. I thought that
- 23:35Speaker 2: I'd made it very clear that I'm going to. It's hard.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Like I don't know how successful it will be because
- 23:40Speaker 2: it's hard to change an allegiance. And I have been
- 23:44Speaker 2: a Swifts fan for a very long time. We tried
- 23:47Speaker 2: to do this. with rugby league when the Titans came
- 23:49Speaker 2: in because everyone in this household disagrees. And we thought, well, let's,
- 23:53Speaker 2: we can all agree that we like Matt Rogers. So
- 23:55Speaker 2: let's get behind the Gold Coast Titans. And it was
- 23:58Speaker 2: just hard. Like we, we tried. So I don't know. I, I, I,
- 24:01Speaker 2: but you know, I do, I feel an enormous affection
- 24:05Speaker 2: and admiration for like, what Amy Sligar has done with
- 24:09Speaker 2: the Giants the last couple of years and what Sophie
- 24:11Speaker 2: Dwyer and how hard they've fought. So I'm going into
- 24:14Speaker 2: it already with a bit of an emotional attachment. But yeah,
- 24:18Speaker 2: I'm getting behind the new team because I think that
- 24:21Speaker 2: we have to. I think that in order for it
- 24:23Speaker 2: to be successful, we really need to embrace the new stuff.
- 24:27Speaker 1: When do you know if the shoe fits? Like how
- 24:30Speaker 1: long are you giving it? You go, yeah, I made
- 24:32Speaker 1: the right decision or It's just rubbing you the wrong way.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Well, I think I have to commit for a whole season,
- 24:37Speaker 2: don't I?
- 24:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you do.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I don't think I'm on a three-year deal so far.
- 24:40Speaker 2: That's just Amy Sliger and Grace Workie. But, yeah, I
- 24:44Speaker 2: think I have to commit for the whole season. But
- 24:47Speaker 2: it will be the way, you know, like I support
- 24:50Speaker 2: the Wallabies against the All Blacks, but I'll support the
- 24:53Speaker 2: All Blacks against anyone else. So I will still be
- 24:55Speaker 2: supporting the Swifts. It's really only going to change when,
- 24:59Speaker 2: It comes down to I'll probably go to more Sirens
- 25:02Speaker 2: games than Swifts games this year, but, you know, my
- 25:06Speaker 2: heart will still also be with the Swifts. You're making
- 25:09Speaker 2: this very hard for me, Catherine.
- 25:11Speaker 4: I know.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'm trying to do the right thing. I'm out. No,
- 25:12Speaker 2: what I'm doing is outing you. I'm trying to invest
- 25:15Speaker 2: in the game.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Outing me. We appreciate that you support everybody, but I
- 25:19Speaker 1: was fascinated that you had decided that they were going
- 25:21Speaker 1: to be your number one team.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Well, I think if we want change. We have to
- 25:27Speaker 2: be the change.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Be the change.
- 25:28Speaker 2: So I'm getting behind the new one. But Daryl, good
- 25:31Speaker 2: friend of the podcast, Daryl Milton, we all know Mr. Statsman,
- 25:34Speaker 2: did some really interesting work during the week. He's got
- 25:36Speaker 2: his own Facebook channel now, Netball by Numbers, and that's
- 25:40Speaker 2: the sort of thing– Someone told me we didn't do
- 25:43Speaker 2: enough on the World Cup results out of Africa and Europe.
- 25:49Speaker 3: I disagree.
- 25:50Speaker 2: We're not actually a super pointy head netball podcast. We
- 25:54Speaker 2: want to be the podcast that's like what you talk
- 25:56Speaker 2: about on the sidelines at a carnival or whatever. But
- 26:00Speaker 2: Daryl does have one that is netball by numbers that
- 26:02Speaker 2: will be dissecting quite a lot of stuff in great detail.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And there are many other podcasts and places around that
- 26:09Speaker 2: you can get that information that you don't get here.
- 26:12Speaker 2: We pride ourselves on our half-arseness, but also our inclusiveness.
- 26:16Speaker 2: But Daryl went through the nine teams who have ever
- 26:19Speaker 2: played Super Netball. So that obviously includes the Magpies, who
- 26:24Speaker 2: then became the Mavs. So Magpies played seven seasons, Mavs
- 26:27Speaker 2: have played three seasons. And he ranked them in a
- 26:30Speaker 2: very complex but comprehensive way, giving points for Finals, appearances,
- 26:38Speaker 2: final wins, minor premierships, number of games that they've won
- 26:42Speaker 2: across the season. And have a guess, which team do
- 26:45Speaker 2: you think has been the most successful Super Netball team
- 26:49Speaker 2: in the 10 years of Suncorp Super Netball?
- 26:54Speaker 1: It's got to be, it's either the Lightning or the Fever.
- 26:59Speaker 3: I was going to say Vixens, but then they weren't
- 27:01Speaker 3: as successful early and Lightning were.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Hmm. And then the lightning have still chipped away at
- 27:09Speaker 1: finals for a while, as have fever though, haven't they?
- 27:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:13Speaker 2: So why don't I start in ninth place and work
- 27:15Speaker 2: it up for you? Well, I'll start in ninth place
- 27:18Speaker 2: and I recommend watching the video. It is long but
- 27:21Speaker 2: the methodology is very comprehensive and tight. So in ninth place. Firebirds,
- 27:27Speaker 2: which surprised the hell out of me. No, it doesn't
- 27:29Speaker 2: surprise me. And then I realised that they had an
- 27:31Speaker 2: enormous period of success in the ANZ championships, didn't they?
- 27:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 27:38Speaker 2: So they won the ANZs in 2011, 2015, 2016, and
- 27:40Speaker 2: the only team to win back-to-back ANZ premierships. But they've
- 27:44Speaker 2: only been in the finals once in Suncorp Super Netball era. Ah,
- 27:48Speaker 2: in a decade. And that wasn't in the grand final.
- 27:51Speaker 2: So in ninth place is the Firebirds. In eighth place
- 27:54Speaker 2: is the Magpies. Seventh, Mavs. Sixth, Giants. Fifth.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Swifts.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Thunderbirds.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's right.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Which would be startling to anyone who had sort of
- 28:09Speaker 2: only just come in to watch Super Netball in the
- 28:12Speaker 2: last five years, wouldn't it? But, you know, they had
- 28:14Speaker 2: a very lean period. In fourth position is Swifts.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Third, Lightning.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Second, Fever. And the most successful club in the Super
- 28:23Speaker 2: Netball era has been the Vixens.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Oh, I love those a bit. There you go.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that does make sense.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Wow. Oh, wow.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Very cool. I thought that you would like that. I
- 28:34Speaker 2: certainly liked it. It surprised me, but that's the beauty
- 28:38Speaker 2: of numbers. It's the beauty of Daryl doing all this
- 28:41Speaker 2: work is that we get to take it and turn
- 28:43Speaker 2: it into a two-minute segment where we go, oh, that's surprising.
- 28:46Speaker 1: But I do love all the ebbs and flows of
- 28:49Speaker 1: that because during CBT, ANZ, Perth team, nowhere to be seen.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Now they're at the top of the pop. Melbourne's probably
- 28:57Speaker 1: been up the top the whole way through. Interesting, the Swifts.
- 29:02Speaker 1: The Sydney teams were, what, fourth and sixth?
- 29:05Speaker 2: Fourth and sixth, yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 29:08Speaker 3: I have a challenge for Daryl. Excellent.
- 29:11Speaker 2: We haven't given Daryl a job in weeks.
- 29:13Speaker 3: So he's done that for, what, Suncorp Super Netball. I'd
- 29:18Speaker 3: like for Daryl to do it for the three eras,
- 29:20Speaker 3: so CBT, ANZ, SSN.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Please.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Oh, you're a jerk.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Because I'm sure he will do it.
- 29:28Speaker 1: That's going to be difficult.
- 29:29Speaker 2: But Liz, you could do it. You've done some wonderful
- 29:32Speaker 2: work as an intern with numbers.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, no. No. well, did you all see the Brisbane
- 29:42Speaker 3: 2032 logo? And I was really enjoying all of their
- 29:44Speaker 3: video reveals, getting athletes, past athletes. And I'm like starting
- 29:48Speaker 3: to put it together. And I thought, is it a pineapple? Yeah.
- 29:52Speaker 3: And I mean, Thorpey looks probably way too fit for
- 29:55Speaker 3: an ex-athlete. Like he's really given the rest of us
- 29:58Speaker 3: a bad name, but. I started to think it might
- 30:00Speaker 3: have been pineapple and I saw the little round bit
- 30:02Speaker 3: and I thought maybe that's a mango. Are we having
- 30:04Speaker 3: a fruit salad? I don't know.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Are we having an Olympic fruit salad?
- 30:08Speaker 3: I didn't know. That's the first sport that.
- 30:10Speaker 1: They do on day one is fruit salad.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And the inspirational song is going to be the Wiggles
- 30:15Speaker 2: singing fruit salad. Yummy, yummy.
- 30:18Speaker 3: That would be such a great Olympic event, fruit salad.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Wouldn't it? Oh, my goodness. It makes it like at
- 30:25Speaker 3: the Olympic level having to remind people of, no, you
- 30:28Speaker 3: are apples.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Yes.
- 30:31Speaker 2: I'm not going through this again. It would be a
- 30:34Speaker 2: great opening ceremony, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it?
- 30:36Speaker 3: It would be great. Anyhow, so I had no idea
- 30:39Speaker 3: but I was fascinated and then allegedly it got, the
- 30:43Speaker 3: logo got leaked. An intern, I think from what I understand,
- 30:47Speaker 3: the poor bastard, whoever it is, put it up on YouTube.
- 30:51Speaker 3: But it was only there for a couple of minutes.
- 30:52Speaker 3: But by that point, like there were screenshots and so
- 30:57Speaker 3: it was leaked. And it's a cockatoo. And I think
- 31:00Speaker 3: it's beautiful. I really like it.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I love it. Catherine's seen that. It's also the shape
- 31:12Speaker 2: of the state of Queensland, but, yes, reminiscent of the
- 31:16Speaker 2: plume of a crested.
- 31:19Speaker 3: sorry but i did feel really sorry for whoever like
- 31:23Speaker 3: could you imagine that moment when you realize.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Oh liz ellis can you imagine that moment you have
- 31:32Speaker 1: lived that moment.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Well mine was mine was not so public right so
- 31:36Speaker 3: can you imagine that moment that poor intern when they
- 31:37Speaker 3: realize oh my god it was supposed to be a
- 31:40Speaker 3: test and i've done it and I don't know. Well,
- 31:43Speaker 3: thankfully that person has remained nameless and I hope they
- 31:47Speaker 3: are still employed because the thing that makes you better
- 31:49Speaker 3: is learning from your mistakes. They would never do that again.
- 31:52Speaker 2: And also, we probably wouldn't be talking about it right
- 31:54Speaker 2: now had that not happened. So there is definitely a
- 31:57Speaker 2: silver lining to it.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Deary me. Have you ever stuffed up in a first
- 32:02Speaker 1: job like that?
- 32:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 1: What was your first job, Elizabeth?
- 32:06Speaker 3: Oh, I had a number of first jobs. Like I...
- 32:09Speaker 3: It's not how first jobs work, by the way. I
- 32:11Speaker 3: was a checkout chick. I did lots of things. But
- 32:13Speaker 3: I also did a bit of an internship over summer
- 32:16Speaker 3: once for Netball Australia with Keely Devery, who was like
- 32:19Speaker 3: the media manager. And at that point, we didn't have
- 32:22Speaker 3: a list of test caps. And so she tasked me
- 32:26Speaker 3: with going through all of the match. Remember the score sheets?
- 32:32Speaker 3: And like Netball's been around now for 100 years. This
- 32:35Speaker 3: would have been 30 years ago. And so it was
- 32:39Speaker 3: 70 years worth of school sheets that I had to
- 32:40Speaker 3: go through and tot up mid-play.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Yep.
- 32:43Speaker 3: And anyway, so I compiled the original list of who
- 32:49Speaker 3: had played how many test caps.
- 32:50Speaker 1: One, two, skip a few.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Well, unfortunately I did skip a few because in the
- 32:55Speaker 3: 99 World Cup, Vicky had to play all, Vicky Wilson
- 32:59Speaker 3: had to play all 10 matches to get to 100
- 33:01Speaker 3: test matches. Unfortunately, she only played nine. So she retired.
- 33:04Speaker 3: She was like Bradman, best ever, retired, 99, not out.
- 33:09Speaker 3: And then a few years later, somebody redid all the
- 33:12Speaker 3: counting and the original intern who had done it had
- 33:16Speaker 3: missed three test matches or five test matches.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Did the intern miss any of her own test matches
- 33:23Speaker 2: or was it just someone else's test matches?
- 33:25Speaker 3: Just someone else's test matches. So the original missed. The
- 33:30Speaker 3: original intern missed the numbers, so Vicky Wilson had to
- 33:33Speaker 3: be celebrated a little bit later for 104 test matches
- 33:37Speaker 3: because I'd missed a couple. In my defence, like, it
- 33:39Speaker 3: was a lot of score sheets to go through.
- 33:41Speaker 1: That is a full-on. Speaking of, though, it has jotted
- 33:46Speaker 1: my memory.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 1: We're about to see our next centurion, guys. We are.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Courtney Bruce.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Oh, how exciting.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Sitting on 99.
- 33:53Speaker 4: Oh.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I think they don't play her in New Zealand so
- 33:56Speaker 1: we can celebrate it when she comes back to Australia.
- 33:58Speaker 2: I think that's a great idea. Well, but we want
- 34:00Speaker 2: to win.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Yeah. No, they need to play her. But how great.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And she just has snuck up, hasn't she? I think
- 34:08Speaker 1: we're all focused on Lizzie Watson getting her 100th and
- 34:10Speaker 1: there was a lot of hoo-ha around that so it
- 34:12Speaker 1: will be interesting to see if Courtney and Bruce will
- 34:15Speaker 1: get the same sort of.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Oh, that's exciting.
- 34:17Speaker 3: It's great, isn't it?
- 34:17Speaker 2: Yeah, wow.
- 34:18Speaker 3: That's another one to the list. We're planning the hoo-ha,
- 34:21Speaker 3: not we.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Great.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Netball Australia are planning the hoo-ha.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Great.
- 34:24Speaker 3: For Courtney and Bruce.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Because it'll be in Sydney, won't it, that we'll get.
- 34:26Speaker 3: To celebrate it. It'll be in Sydney and another goalkeeper.
- 34:28Speaker 3: I finally have a friend.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Is she the first one since you? Oh, my God,
- 34:35Speaker 1: she is.
- 34:35Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's all shooters and then Liz was the first
- 34:37Speaker 1: big quarter.
- 34:37Speaker 3: All shooters and Liz Watson, yeah. So I think Liz,
- 34:39Speaker 3: you'll be waiting a while to get a mate, but
- 34:41Speaker 3: I'm excited about having a little mate.
- 34:44Speaker 1: There you go.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Oh, wow, that's very exciting. You can put her in
- 34:47Speaker 2: your book. Black out the Governor-General.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to say we could put her
- 34:53Speaker 3: in the stage show, but I think she's got too
- 34:55Speaker 3: much self-respect to go in our stage show.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I think she's far too sensible as well.
- 34:58Speaker 3: This is true.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 2: All righty, well, we should have a little break and
- 35:02Speaker 2: then come back for a really short final segment because,
- 35:04Speaker 2: my God, we've talked and talked and talked this week,
- 35:06Speaker 2: but what a great couple of reps.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Music Okay.
- 35:20Speaker 2: So we have talked about, I want to just do
- 35:22Speaker 2: a quick reminder, please go and subscribe to our YouTube channel.
- 35:26Speaker 2: We are growing very well. Again, we need a few,
- 35:31Speaker 2: if you know anyone who would like to sponsor this
- 35:33Speaker 2: podcast and Keep continuing to get the word out about
- 35:38Speaker 2: our wonderful sport. Please do put them in touch with us.
- 35:41Speaker 2: But we have lots of international listeners now we've already
- 35:43Speaker 2: talked about. I've acknowledged the US teams. I'm not speaking
- 35:46Speaker 2: about them anymore because apparently only Catherine gets overseas trips
- 35:49Speaker 2: when I do that. But I had a lovely message
- 35:52Speaker 2: from Alicia in Berkshire in England. And her mum, Ali,
- 35:57Speaker 2: who is having a 60th birthday this month, happy birthday, Ali,
- 36:00Speaker 2: is apparently a massive evangelist for not just Netball, but
- 36:04Speaker 2: the No Dribble podcast. So I wanted to say thank you, Ali.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Please continue your good work. And if everyone could follow
- 36:10Speaker 2: the lovely Ali's lead and tell people to listen to
- 36:13Speaker 2: No Dribble, that would help us. I've been very open
- 36:17Speaker 2: with my ambition for world domination for this podcast. And
- 36:22Speaker 2: we will be benevolent leaders. We won't abuse the power, but.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I'm abusing the power.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Will you?
- 36:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not signing up for that. Do you think
- 36:32Speaker 1: we'll get a sponsor if we get world domination?
- 36:35Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 36:36Speaker 3: I would hope so.
- 36:37Speaker 2: We have to see whether women spend any money. Is
- 36:39Speaker 2: anyone interested in women's sport?
- 36:41Speaker 3: Oh, dear. Anyway.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I've still got my hat on. I'm very interested.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Yeah, the girls. Yeah, so that's the International Day of
- 36:47Speaker 2: the Girl Child. But, Liz, you've got a No Dribble
- 36:49Speaker 2: Recommends to share. Oh, I do.
- 36:51Speaker 3: I actually went and saw some live music on Friday night. Oh,
- 36:54Speaker 3: I laughed. Was it the Wizard of Oz?
- 36:58Speaker 1: Shut up. No, I laughed because of the time of
- 37:01Speaker 1: the show.
- 37:01Speaker 2: How great.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Well, the time of the show was a little bit misleading.
- 37:04Speaker 3: So my sister bought the meat tray and I some
- 37:08Speaker 3: tickets and she came along with us and we went
- 37:10Speaker 3: to see the Whitlam's at the Brunswick Hotel.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Fantastic.
- 37:13Speaker 3: And, you know, like it was so great. Like the
- 37:15Speaker 3: Whitlam's were massive, like late 90s.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:18Speaker 3: And, you know, that was a period of time where,
- 37:20Speaker 3: you know, we were sort of young and fabulous and,
- 37:23Speaker 3: Out and about. Out and about and in Sydney. So
- 37:26Speaker 3: it was actually, it was really, really great. I actually
- 37:30Speaker 3: didn't realise how upbeat their music was because I always
- 37:33Speaker 3: thought of Tim Freeman as like broody and serious.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:38Speaker 3: I was like, oh, that's quite jazzy and poppy. Anyway,
- 37:40Speaker 3: it was fantastic.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of a song.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Blow Up the Pokies.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Yeah, Blow Up the Pokies.
- 37:45Speaker 2: It's a beautiful, sad, poignant song, but there is a
- 37:48Speaker 2: lot more that sort of.
- 37:49Speaker 1: What about– Tell me a song.
- 37:50Speaker 3: What do they do? No, I'm a dizzy act. There's
- 37:52Speaker 3: no way I'm dizzy act like loneliness.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Truth.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yep.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Anyway, so– And a picture of you.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Letter to you on a cassette. So no one does
- 38:04Speaker 3: cassettes anymore. No one does.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Oh, they'll be back.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Yes, anyway, it was great. And so I think they've got,
- 38:10Speaker 3: it was the first night of their tour. So I
- 38:13Speaker 3: thoroughly enjoyed it. If anyone wants to go back and,
- 38:16Speaker 3: you know, relive the heyday of the late 90s, the
- 38:19Speaker 3: Whitlam's are fabulous. So it was really good. But we
- 38:22Speaker 3: thought they started at six. So we got there at six. No,
- 38:25Speaker 3: the Support Act started at six.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Oh, who was the Support Act?
- 38:28Speaker 3: Can't remember. It was two.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Must have been.
- 38:30Speaker 3: No, never.
- 38:31Speaker 2: For the supporters.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Oh, but, you know, sometimes they'll surprise you.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:34Speaker 1: I went to see Ice House on the Opera House
- 38:37Speaker 1: steps and it was Sneaky Sound Sisters. Oh, cool.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 38:41Speaker 1: That would have been great.
- 38:42Speaker 2: But, you know, that is on the Opera House steps.
- 38:45Speaker 2: They're going to have the big– this was at a pub.
- 38:47Speaker 2: So usually your support act at a pub is like– Local.
- 38:53Speaker 2: But we should be supporting them. I'm saying the wrong thing, but,
- 38:56Speaker 2: you know, it is like, oh, I wish I'd come
- 38:59Speaker 2: in an hour.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Anyway, but they started it and they kicked off
- 39:02Speaker 3: at 8, so we were at home by 10.30, which
- 39:04Speaker 3: was still a very good pension time. Perfect. So we
- 39:06Speaker 3: loved it.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:07Speaker 3: So it was great. And just it was nice. It
- 39:08Speaker 3: was a beautiful night at a great pub, sitting out
- 39:11Speaker 3: in the open.
- 39:12Speaker 1: How do people know about this stuff? I always hear
- 39:15Speaker 1: of people doing these fabulous things and finding these little
- 39:17Speaker 1: bands and things playing. How do you know? Is that
- 39:20Speaker 1: Amy Parmenter?
- 39:21Speaker 3: Fix your albumism algorithm. Yeah, Amy Parmenter.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Oh, fix my algorithm.
- 39:24Speaker 2: She went to Missy Higgins. on the Opera House Step.
- 39:26Speaker 2: She went to Missy Higgins?
- 39:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Amy Sligo was there too.
- 39:29Speaker 1: How great would that have been?
- 39:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Fantastic. But have you ever been, like the concerts on
- 39:32Speaker 2: the Opera House Steps, the Opera House Steps are really hard.
- 39:36Speaker 1: What's that?
- 39:38Speaker 3: I've been to some of the best concerts ever.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Says she with a perky ass.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I was quite comfortable with my flabby butt on the
- 39:44Speaker 1: opera house steps.
- 39:45Speaker 2: It's such a middle-aged response, isn't it? Should we go
- 39:47Speaker 2: to this amazing concert outdoors on the opera house steps?
- 39:50Speaker 1: I'm going to.
- 39:51Speaker 3: Take a pillow.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I'll just take the little seating thing that you take
- 39:55Speaker 2: to the stadium to watch the kids' footy.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Yep.
- 39:58Speaker 3: And it was funny, speaking about the support act, one
- 40:00Speaker 3: of the guys, I can't remember his name, one of
- 40:02Speaker 3: the support acts was sort of berating the crowd for
- 40:05Speaker 3: not getting up and getting into and dancing and stuff.
- 40:07Speaker 3: And I was laughing because I'm like. That always works.
- 40:10Speaker 3: The reason we're here to see the Whitlands is because
- 40:12Speaker 3: we're all middle-aged.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:14Speaker 3: You're all behaving like middle-aged lawyers from the northern beaches.
- 40:17Speaker 3: And I was like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 40:20Speaker 2: That's exactly me.
- 40:21Speaker 1: It was very personal. Yeah.
- 40:24Speaker 3: That's what I was in the 90s.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Speaking of beaches, please praise me. I had my very
- 40:28Speaker 2: first swim in the ocean of the season yesterday. It
- 40:31Speaker 2: was bracing.
- 40:32Speaker 1: It was beautiful.
- 40:34Speaker 2: But, you know, so we went to Manly and we
- 40:37Speaker 2: got there and they didn't have any flags up because
- 40:40Speaker 2: they had the big storm the night before.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Oh, that was hectic.
- 40:43Speaker 2: And so they were saying that there was some dangerous current.
- 40:47Speaker 2: So we sort of hung about on the sand for
- 40:49Speaker 2: a bit and soaked up some warmth, which was really nice.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Then they put the flags up, but they had one
- 40:53Speaker 2: really narrow area where they put the flags up on
- 40:56Speaker 2: the whole stretch of beach. And they were on that
- 40:58Speaker 2: loud hailer saying, we can open the beach, but only,
- 41:02Speaker 2: you know, you can't go out deep. There are dangerous
- 41:04Speaker 2: currents and blah, These guys are volunteers. They give their
- 41:08Speaker 2: time to make us safe on the beaches. If anything
- 41:12Speaker 2: goes wrong, they put their own lives at risk to
- 41:15Speaker 2: go out and save us. And people still think, yeah, no,
- 41:18Speaker 2: I'm not going to do what you say. I'm going
- 41:20Speaker 2: to just swim outside the flags and do whatever the
- 41:22Speaker 2: hell I want. And then if I get in trouble,
- 41:25Speaker 2: you have to come. It's like, can we just show
- 41:27Speaker 2: some respect to the expertise and also the effort that
- 41:31Speaker 2: they are making there? Like, I think it's such an
- 41:36Speaker 2: enormous privilege that we can go to the beach, but
- 41:38Speaker 2: the ocean is dangerous. So, you know, these people... give
- 41:42Speaker 2: up their day you go down on Christmas day there's
- 41:44Speaker 2: people volunteers there on duty do what they say anyway
- 41:49Speaker 2: I went in I go under three times doesn't matter
- 41:52Speaker 2: how cold it is I go under three times after
- 41:54Speaker 2: that I'm allowed to get out but after your third
- 41:56Speaker 2: time that's when you start to.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Acclimatize yeah I went for one in Queensland too it
- 42:00Speaker 1: was far warmer by this count well I'm far warmer
- 42:03Speaker 1: by the sound of that yeah because I'm a big
- 42:04Speaker 1: sook when it comes to ocean temperature.
- 42:07Speaker 2: It is lovely, though, once you get out of a
- 42:09Speaker 2: cold ocean swim and you go, I've just done something
- 42:11Speaker 2: hard and I feel very alive.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:14Speaker 2: But, Liz, that No Dribble recommends, it's really just No
- 42:18Speaker 2: Dribble shows off, isn't it? Because it's not like people
- 42:20Speaker 2: can go to that concert. It's already happened.
- 42:22Speaker 3: No, that's what I said. It's the start of their tour.
- 42:24Speaker 3: So go and find the tickets to their tour.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Oh, we'll run.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 42:27Speaker 1: We should do a No Dribble shows off. That'd be fun.
- 42:30Speaker 2: That would be fun, wouldn't it?
- 42:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:31Speaker 3: I'm done. I've got nothing to show off about.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I don't do some of those things very often.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I haven't been to the gym.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I haven't done anything. All right.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Well, that is– we are way over time today, so
- 42:40Speaker 2: it's time for us to sign off. Thanks, everyone, for
- 42:43Speaker 2: joining us. Again, my name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 42:44Speaker 1: I'm Kath Cox.
- 42:45Speaker 3: I'm Liz Ellis.
- 42:46Speaker 4: Bye.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Bye, everyone.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Happy Friday.
- 42:53Speaker 3: So you know how Catherine's going to see the Wizard
- 42:56Speaker 3: of Oz in Vegas.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Only Catherine can make a trip to Vegas nerdy. Yeah, exactly.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Well, do you know, I went to Disneyland with her
- 43:05Speaker 3: once and she was like unbearable in the lead up.
- 43:07Speaker 3: She was unbearably excited. It was like going with a five-year-old.
- 43:10Speaker 3: And then we got there and the first ride we
- 43:12Speaker 3: went on, I thought we'll do something really low key
- 43:14Speaker 3: because she's scared of heights. So we went on the
- 43:16Speaker 3: Finding Nemo ride and we walked down and, She couldn't
- 43:21Speaker 3: cope with it because it was underground and she got out.
- 43:24Speaker 3: So that was the end of Disneyland for everyone. Oh, God, lover.
- 43:27Speaker 3: So hopefully The Wizard of Oz won't be too... Too scary.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Too scary.
- 43:31Speaker 2: The flying monkeys gets a bit stressful.
