- 0:00Speaker 1: See this is a yacht rock Wednesday, so we play
- 0:03some yacht rock tunes.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Because I'm old enough to.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Be into the yacht rock genre. Our next guest might
- 0:12be able to qualify for yacht rock status as well.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I know this.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He qualifies for being a great source of information on
- 0:20sports and collectibles, he said. Good friend Bobby Back joins
- 0:24us from Nico Sports. Joins us on the hotline right now.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Bob. It's great to hear from you again. How are you.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I am doing great, Craig, It's always nice to be
- 0:32with you. We go back a long way. I guess
- 0:34we are oldies, but goldies, right.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good way. That's a good way to
- 0:40describe it. I was telling Khalil in the first segment
- 0:44of the show. I said, you and I do go
- 0:46back quite a bit. We've known each other for several years.
- 0:49And I said, I still have that collectible basketball that
- 0:54your group had when the Mavericks won the NBA title
- 0:58in twenty eleven, that white panel.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It was really cool.
- 1:01Speaker 3: No, I remember that.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yep, I still have.
- 1:03Speaker 1: That as a Mavericks fan, so I should have gotten
- 1:06in touch with of course, it was during the pandemic.
- 1:09I should have gotten in touch with it when the
- 1:10Dodgers won the World Series in twenty twenty, because I'm
- 1:12a I'm a to the death Dodger fan, so I
- 1:16But it's funny because I know we have a lot
- 1:19of Astra fans in this town and they're on pins
- 1:22and needles today because the Astros are down a game
- 1:24and it's scoreless right now on the top of the
- 1:26third in Game two with Detroit. But tell folks a
- 1:30little bit about how you do what you do, because
- 1:34I think it's really fascinating the way that you can
- 1:37connect with the sports fans of specific teams with these
- 1:42really unique collectibles.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Well, you know, he goes back to my years when
- 1:46I was with the Chicago Cubs in the nineteen eighties.
- 1:49I was brought to Chicago by Dallas Green, the general manager.
- 1:53I knew Dallas when I was a sports editor in Philadelphia,
- 1:56and when they won the World Series in nineteen eighty,
- 1:59he brought me in as one of his assistants and
- 2:02I got involved. I member in spring training with the
- 2:05Make a Wish Foundation and we were granting They were
- 2:09just starting off granting wishes to kids who had life
- 2:12threatening medical conditions and got involved in fundraising with them,
- 2:17and then many many years later, after my career with
- 2:19the Cubs, I went with Kemper Sports ran in their
- 2:21sports division for about seven years, the Maui Invitational out
- 2:26in Hawaii and some other things. I continued to do
- 2:30a lot of charitable work, and when I ran into
- 2:33the folks at Nico Sports it was nineteen ninety six,
- 2:37put together a program for them. They were a client
- 2:41of mine at the time, and they've raised gossh just
- 2:45in the last six years three point two million dollars
- 2:48for a number of charities. And we'll I'll be talking
- 2:51about today is something that's going to help out the
- 2:54Neighborhood Longhorns program because we've got a fascinating football, long
- 3:00Orange fans and you're going to want to grab piece
- 3:02of paper pan whatever you want to judgs up and down.
- 3:05I've got a phone number on a website I'll give
- 3:07out in a few moments, Craig about this amazing one
- 3:12hundredth anniversary football that salutes Darryl Kay, Royal Texas Memorial
- 3:17State and one hundredth anniversary. It'll have a beautiful color
- 3:21panoramic image on one of the panels of the ball,
- 3:24which will keep at pristine looking for years to come
- 3:27because everything is embossed on here won't fade, and only
- 3:30twoenty and twenty four of these footballs will ever be produced.
- 3:34It's going to raise money, as I mentioned for that
- 3:37neighborhood long orange program. There are one hundred and nineteen
- 3:40dollars ninety five cents each and they are selling very quickly.
- 3:44You'll get an individually numbered certificate of authenticity and it's
- 3:49full size, it's fully licensed, and it's also got some
- 3:54really cool panels on there. I'll just kind of describe
- 3:56that before I give about that phone number. The top
- 3:59panels got one hundredth anniversary logo, stadium history, Championship history.
- 4:05The second panel right below that salutes the SEC season,
- 4:09the very first one for the Longhorns this year. They
- 4:11got off to a good start and beat Mississippi State
- 4:13in their first SEC game this past weekend. I've got
- 4:17the Texas helmet logo there, and then we list all
- 4:20the teams in the SEC right there on the side
- 4:23of that panel. The last panel is really my This
- 4:26is the one that people are going to say, Wow,
- 4:28I got to get this football because it's got a
- 4:31full color panoramic image of Daryl K. Royal Texas Memorial
- 4:36State in there, taken on a sun drenched afternoon about
- 4:39two years ago. Helicopter aerial shot and it stretches from
- 4:43the left to the right on that panel. And if
- 4:46you've never been to the stadium where you've been there
- 4:48many times, this is something that you can showcase to
- 4:52your friends and family members and keep. Because it's in
- 4:56my sports background and covering so many games, it's certainly
- 5:00among the top five stadiums that I've visited over the
- 5:03years when I was a sports ritter and of course
- 5:06a broadcaster. If you'd like to go ahead and get
- 5:09this football gain only twenty twenty four be made, and
- 5:12we're probably bordering in on halfway sold out. I would
- 5:15not wait because you can get your Christmas shop and
- 5:19done and for gifts and for the for the holiday season.
- 5:23These will be sending you plenty of time to get
- 5:25them afore Thanksgiving. The toll free number again it's it's
- 5:29one nine hundred, nineteen dollars and ninety five cents will
- 5:32snag you one of these footballs. Toll free number is
- 5:34eight hundred three four five two eight six eight eight
- 5:40hundred three four five twenty eight sixty eight, or go
- 5:44right to the website nicosports dot com nikcosports dot com.
- 5:51That's nikcosports dot com or eight hundred three four five
- 5:58twenty eight sixty eight. I've I'll tell you what we
- 6:01could be talking in January during the football playoffs, because
- 6:06I don't see Longhorns. They've got a couple of tough
- 6:08games on their schedule, but Oklahoma course coming up in
- 6:12Georgia and then that last game of the season with
- 6:14Texas A and M. I think that may be the
- 6:17game that keeps them from either being unbeaten or a
- 6:22one lost team because I think they can beat both
- 6:24Oklahoma and Georgia.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Just for me to add to this, what folks are
- 6:31what you just described on the one panel, and for
- 6:34anybody that's been to a Longhorn home game this year,
- 6:37you've seen on the field that one hundredth anniversary logo
- 6:41that's on the field at the twenty yard line. That's
- 6:44what it is on one side and the SEC logo
- 6:47on the other side. So if you're wondering about the
- 6:48one hundred logo, it's really cool. The DKR logo there
- 6:52with the one hundred, that exact logo logo is replicated
- 6:57on the football, what you see on the fields, and
- 6:59then like you mentioned on the other side, the panoramic shot.
- 7:03Just looking at the photo of it is just absolutely tremendous.
- 7:07And I remember, you know the years that you've done these,
- 7:10and you've done commemorative football and basketballs and baseballs for
- 7:15championship winning teams and things like that.
- 7:17Speaker 2: It's always creative.
- 7:18Speaker 1: This might be the most creative enterprise I've seen you
- 7:21do with the football. To see that panoramic photo of
- 7:24the ball, panoramic photo of the stadium on the ball.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, you know the owner of the Nico Sports
- 7:31Craig Midner, and he and his wife started the organization
- 7:35back in nineteen ninety two, and Craig does a great
- 7:39job in getting all the artworks together, all the creative
- 7:42that they put a lot of background and foresight into
- 7:46making these. I mean people who have owned some of
- 7:49these pieces of sports memorabilia, whether they be special baseball
- 7:53bats or as you mentioned, championship basketballs and footballs. There's
- 7:58a lot of time and effort that goes into making these. Uh,
- 8:02they just don't happen, and NICO Sports is always very
- 8:05careful in making sure that everything is officially a licensed approved,
- 8:10the artwork is correct. They take a lot of time
- 8:14and effort to make these and people have called up
- 8:17years later, like you said, and they've had a basketball
- 8:21or a football that they bought ten years ago and
- 8:25it's it looks just like they popped it out of
- 8:27the case today.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yep, yep, that's that's how mine looked from twenty eleven
- 8:31for that Mavericks championship.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Uh.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And again the for folks who are interested in it,
- 8:38they can call eight hundred and three four five two
- 8:40eight six eight. That's eight hundred three four five two
- 8:42eight six eight, or go to nicosports dot com nik
- 8:46co ncosports dot com. While I got you on the phone,
- 8:50because I know of the many years you put in
- 8:53the baseball first of all, you'll have to forgive me
- 8:55if I've already asked you this question.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Did did you get to know and work along.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Side my colleague and baseball broadcast partner Keith Morland when
- 9:04you were with the oh Zonk.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I played a lot of racquetball games with Zonk too,
- 9:08when we went on the caravan in the middle of
- 9:10the winter to entertain at five o'clock in the morning.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Wow.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll tell you the redhead once. Once he got
- 9:19the motor going, nobody could go from first to third
- 9:21base like Zonk because Keith was just a brilliant, hard nose,
- 9:28blue collar baseball player. And we couldn't have got it
- 9:33done in nineteen eighty four and we won the National
- 9:35League East. We had ninety six wins that year. He
- 9:38was a big part of that season. We just had
- 9:40our eighty four reunion the fortieth anniversary. Keith, I believe,
- 9:46was overseas at the time and couldn't make it, but
- 9:49we got everybody back and we just had a great time.
- 9:52It was the same weekend that Ryan Samberg got inducted
- 9:56into the Cubs Hall of Fame, and he had a
- 9:59statue presentation down at Wrigley Field back in June. But
- 10:04we miss Znk, And I know I was talking to
- 10:06Bobby Janier and some of the other guys that were
- 10:08his teammates, and Rick Suckcliffe and they really missed not
- 10:12singing song. So I hope he's doing well. I haven't
- 10:15talked to him in a while, but he was one
- 10:17of my favorite guys. Just a down to earth person,
- 10:20hard nosed guy. And this is a he left everything
- 10:23out on the field. He never gave it a bat up,
- 10:27and he never was afraid to go ahead and not
- 10:30die for a ball on the outfield.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's still him, And yeah he's a valuable part
- 10:36of our broadcast team. He'll actually step in and I
- 10:39know you know this about him when he came to
- 10:40the University of Texas in nineteen seventy one seventy two,
- 10:44when he came in there, he came in on a
- 10:47football scholarship.
- 10:48Speaker 2: He is he did, Yep, he was.
- 10:50Speaker 1: He was a defensive back for coach Royal for two
- 10:53years and then he went to baseballs. He'd liked to
- 10:55say he never calls Cliff Gustus and a dime in
- 10:58scholarship money. He was on football scholarship. But then of
- 11:02course was an All American his last couple of years
- 11:05and for many years was the all time career hits
- 11:09leader at the College World Series. And but what was
- 11:12my color analyst on the Long War and football broadcasts
- 11:15for for nine years because he knows his football really,
- 11:19really well. Then of course went back over the Cubs
- 11:21and worked with him for three years, moved back to
- 11:23Austin and still fills in for US on football. In fact,
- 11:26he's going to fill in on both the Arkansas.
- 11:28Speaker 2: And A and M broadcast for US this year. So
- 11:29we're well.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I got to tell you two quick little things about
- 11:32Keys real quick. That at our anniversary, the forty anniversary,
- 11:37we always talked about key points in that season, and
- 11:41one of the ones that always stood out in my
- 11:43mind was late actually was the beginning of August. We
- 11:46had to beat the Mets four straight games, and I
- 11:49think it was either the second or the third game.
- 11:52Keith got brushed back and a pitch by Mets pitcher
- 11:55ed Lynch, and at that time everybody was talking about
- 12:00was going to fade again like they did in sixty
- 12:02nine and everything else. Keith went right to the mound
- 12:05and roll blocked ed Lynch, and he didn't. He faked
- 12:10him up high and hit him low. Down went Lynch,
- 12:14and down went the Mets. They never recovered from that moment,
- 12:17and that was the That was the big I think
- 12:21the turning point in our season. The other thing is,
- 12:24and I don't know if Keith will tell you this
- 12:26or not. I was doing a show called cub fan
- 12:30Mania that we did from a local restaurant and I
- 12:34brought in Keith as my guest host and that was
- 12:38his start in broadcasting.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Wow, did not know.
- 12:42Speaker 3: You tell you tell Zonki. He still ows me some
- 12:44money from those days getting them launched in his career
- 12:47because he would come into the restaurant and he was
- 12:51just learning the ropes of being a broadcaster. And you
- 12:54know what, he came and within within two or three
- 12:57times of being on the air, he was.
- 12:59Speaker 2: A natural, no doubt.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And we always enjoy enjoy working with him and having
- 13:05the opportunity. That's great stuff. Again, Bye bye, back with
- 13:09Nico Sports. On with us here and again if you're
- 13:12interested in that special commemorative one hundredth anniversary of dk
- 13:16R Texas Memorial Stadium football that has the commemorative first
- 13:21season in the SEC logo and all the schools in
- 13:24the SEC also on the white panel and that panoramic
- 13:27shot of dk R Texas Memorial Stadium on the football.
- 13:31Speaker 2: It's all there available.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Go to nicosports dot com, n Ikco nicosports dot com
- 13:38where you can get McCall at eight hundred three four
- 13:41five two eight six eight. That's eight hundred and three
- 13:43four five to eight six eight. Bob is always great
- 13:46to visit with you. I have a feeling, yeah, maybe
- 13:47maybe if the log Worns roll through and win a
- 13:50national title, maybe we're visiting again in late January, end
- 13:54of February about a commemorative national championship football.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Well, I'm sure there'll be. If they're not going to
- 14:00be in the top four. I think they're what ranked
- 14:01number two now, but I think if they're gonna be
- 14:04if it won't be in the top four, he certainly
- 14:06will be in the top six or seven. So they'll
- 14:08be in the playoff for sure, and they'll have a
- 14:11good time in the SEC. They'll get they'll get battle
- 14:14trained by you know, playing playing Georgia and some teams
- 14:19like that, and of course Texas A and M at
- 14:20the end of the year. So I think they'll be
- 14:22there in the hunt. Certainly, I'm gonna predict at least
- 14:25be in the semifinals. If not in the final.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Game, well we'll certainly over that. Bob is always great
- 14:30a visit with you.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I appreciate the opportunity to catch up with you, and
- 14:33great stuff about Keith Morland as well, And I'll pass
- 14:37that along to Zong. I appreciate you taking the time
- 14:39and look forward to visiting with you again down the road.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Well, Craig, it's it's been a pleasure being with you.
- 14:44Give my best to Keith and give my phone number two,
- 14:48and I'd love to catch up with Zonkies. He was
- 14:51always one of my favorites in the nine years I
- 14:53was with the organization, and certainly I have fond memories
- 14:57of him playing on our team, especially in nineteen eighty.
- 15:00Speaker 1: No doubt I'll be sure to do it. Thank you, Bob,
- 15:02thanks for joining us.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Okay, Craig, have a good day you too.
- 15:05Speaker 1: That is by eye back from Nico Sports and again,
- 15:09uh the number if you're interested in ordering one of
- 15:12those footballs, and again neighborhood Longhorns benefiting from it as well.
