- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, We're five to Small on Kiss Now on the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Smilesie Show, on the show, and I'm very excited to
- 0:21Speaker 1: meet you boys.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie. Five is in the building, everybody.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Well, welcome Confession your debut album I bought in nineteen
- 0:31Speaker 1: ninety eight.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It was my first record amazing.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So this is less of an interview more of a
- 0:36Speaker 1: fan interview moment. So yeah, I'm I apologize in advance
- 0:41Speaker 1: for any fan boying or my five fans show. Thank
- 0:46Speaker 1: you very much. Well, welcome to Australia, Welcome back to Australia.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I've seen videos on social so far of Perth. They
- 0:54Speaker 1: were out of control, the fans, they were control.
- 0:58Speaker 3: We're very lucky to have amazing fans and they loved
- 1:00Speaker 3: the show, so yeah, we're really proud of it as well.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So it was good.
- 1:03Speaker 4: It's fun.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Do you have any from back in the nineties days
- 1:08Speaker 1: from that the peak pandemonium of boy band crazy? Is
- 1:12Speaker 1: there anything that stands out with like how wild the
- 1:14Speaker 1: fans were for you here in Australia. Do we do
- 1:17Speaker 1: any crazy things?
- 1:20Speaker 5: The issue we've got, mate, is that we've genuinely because
- 1:23Speaker 5: it was so crazy back in the day, we most
- 1:27Speaker 5: of us have got kind of almost like memory loss
- 1:30Speaker 5: of it with everything was just one blur.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Blacked.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You've blacked it out because the parties were too big,
- 1:37Speaker 1: or because it was just so such.
- 1:40Speaker 5: A crazy ride that.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I've got one. We played Melbourne, can't remember which venue,
- 1:46Speaker 4: and their hotel let us like the pool closed, but
- 1:49Speaker 4: they left Melbourne.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Have the whole.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I bought champagne and drinks up there and we had
- 1:57Speaker 4: like a mad pool party.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Remember, yeah, remember I can actually see.
- 2:03Speaker 1: The pool now do you do you remember it? Because
- 2:05Speaker 1: did the police come or was it just a wild night?
- 2:08Speaker 4: It was just it was one of those privileged moments
- 2:12Speaker 4: of being in a pop band and being.
- 2:14Speaker 2: A ladder people. Yeah, I know, I know, I believe that.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I believe that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I believe that it's funny just touching on the peak
- 2:21Speaker 1: of the fame. You would have been go, go go,
- 2:23Speaker 1: non stop. I was joking about having, you know, blacked
- 2:26Speaker 1: it out the memories, but there was what would have
- 2:28Speaker 1: been so crazy you would have barely many any memories
- 2:32Speaker 1: because every day it was just crazy.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Yeah. It was eighteen hour days and every day was
- 2:38Speaker 5: just fall from start to finish. Yeah, and you just
- 2:41Speaker 5: get up and do it again and again and again.
- 2:43Speaker 5: So the whole thing just rolled into one kind of
- 2:45Speaker 5: blurry massive.
- 2:47Speaker 3: It's been managed really well this time, you know. You know,
- 2:49Speaker 3: I think everyone learns from from the nineties and how
- 2:52Speaker 3: it was done.
- 2:52Speaker 1: When you guys found fame. Social media wasn't a thing, right,
- 2:56Speaker 1: so there wasn't everything was done the old fashioned way
- 2:59Speaker 1: would was like get to press the flash and fly
- 3:01Speaker 1: around the world. There you had to go to radio stations.
- 3:05Speaker 1: There was you had video clips, but they only did
- 3:07Speaker 1: a bit of work.
- 3:08Speaker 2: To build a connection, you had to go to the countries.
- 3:12Speaker 5: And that's what happened with this band as well, because
- 3:14Speaker 5: it took off so quickly straight away, they tried to
- 3:18Speaker 5: break us.
- 3:19Speaker 2: All around the simultaneously.
- 3:21Speaker 5: So we were in the States, we're over here, Australasia,
- 3:24Speaker 5: all over Europe, South America, and then that just just
- 3:28Speaker 5: what just broke the camel's back.
- 3:30Speaker 4: We wouldn't know. We'd wake up on a on a
- 3:32Speaker 4: coach and we'd actually like be squinting at road signs
- 3:36Speaker 4: to know what continent we were on.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I remember looking at a window and going it could
- 3:43Speaker 3: be Japan.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Really no idea.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Where you were, because you also would have had people
- 3:49Speaker 1: holding your passports for you, and you would have had
- 3:51Speaker 1: a team around you, and you just literally shuffled from
- 3:54Speaker 1: location to location, not being aware of where you were.
- 3:58Speaker 1: There's a couple of stories, and forgive me, I know
- 4:00Speaker 1: you probably would have spoken about them before, but just
- 4:02Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Not everyone knows them.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Simon cow signed you guys did was what was he
- 4:08Speaker 1: like as a boss before TV signed? As you see
- 4:12Speaker 1: him really relentlessly, relentlessly like driving you boys on the day, then.
- 4:18Speaker 4: It's literally the thing is with Simon we learn very
- 4:21Speaker 4: early on that if you were if you had an idea,
- 4:24Speaker 4: you had to make him think it was his idea
- 4:26Speaker 4: and need to go repeat it back to you and
- 4:28Speaker 4: you go, that's a fantastic idea.
- 4:30Speaker 3: What he used to do in meetings, which was we got,
- 4:34Speaker 3: you know, sort of saving to it in the end,
- 4:36Speaker 3: was he you thought that he was just winking at
- 4:38Speaker 3: you and you were his favorite?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Give you that's how he made me feel proper.
- 4:42Speaker 3: But you'd give you the wink, right And then we
- 4:45Speaker 3: started to go anyone, did you wink at you? And
- 4:47Speaker 3: he would wink. He would he would wink at every
- 4:49Speaker 3: one of us without the other seeing.
- 4:50Speaker 5: We were quite good friends with the guys from West
- 4:53Speaker 5: Life as well, so they'd be coming in for a
- 4:55Speaker 5: meeting after we were even or vice versa, and I'd
- 4:58Speaker 5: walked past Brian's and then you go, how many winks
- 5:00Speaker 5: did you get today? For the next time, seeing I
- 5:04Speaker 5: got Tree up day?
- 5:05Speaker 1: What was What was your relationship like with the other
- 5:08Speaker 1: boy bands of the time, West Life, Backstreet Boys, in Sync?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Was there a war? Was there was a competitive or
- 5:15Speaker 2: did you There.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Was definitely competition. We were competitive, yeah, but.
- 5:19Speaker 3: There weren't the wars everyone said there was.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Now tell me.
- 5:23Speaker 1: According to Wikipedia, there is an Aston Martin story about
- 5:26Speaker 1: a car.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Is this true?
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yes?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Okay, so I want to I want to tell it.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You tell me where I'm wrong here. Apparently Simon Cowe
- 5:32Speaker 1: was trying to get you Max Martin's Britney Spears Baby
- 5:36Speaker 1: One More Time as a song for this group for you,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and then Max wasn't sure it was right, but then
- 5:43Speaker 1: he offered that Simon cow offered an Aston Martin as
- 5:46Speaker 1: a gift.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Is that the story whose.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Stories that your mixes up? That he offered Max Martin?
- 5:52Speaker 4: It was a really expensive Mercedes for Baby One More Time?
- 5:55Speaker 4: But Max said, we've given it to this girl and
- 5:58Speaker 4: the Aston Martin story. Okay, because we were actually broke.
- 6:03Speaker 4: We'd released like everybody get up when the lights go out, slammer.
- 6:06Speaker 4: We were on like one hundred pounds a week and
- 6:09Speaker 4: we were really struggling, right non seriously, We've gone in
- 6:12Speaker 4: and we'd gone, look we need some more money and
- 6:14Speaker 4: stuff like. He was like, okay, yeah, look we'll transferred
- 6:17Speaker 4: like a few thousand whatever blah blah blah. And then
- 6:19Speaker 4: he comes out of the underground thing in his convertible
- 6:22Speaker 4: Aston Martin and then he goes, hey, guys, we turn
- 6:25Speaker 4: while we're waiting for our VANCA company goes this was
- 6:28Speaker 4: everybody get up.
- 6:32Speaker 1: You have one hundred pounds in your account. And then
- 6:34Speaker 1: he drives out of the underground car park in an
- 6:37Speaker 1: Aston Martin that your song that you had performed had
- 6:40Speaker 1: brought him here.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yes, but I did kind of.
- 6:43Speaker 3: I did kind of get my own back a little
- 6:45Speaker 3: bit in that Ester Manin because when we were doing
- 6:47Speaker 3: when the Lights go out, he he says he needs
- 6:50Speaker 3: to move it, and I said, I'll move it for you, Simon,
- 6:53Speaker 3: and I literally took it over Putney Bridge and took
- 6:56Speaker 3: off in it. Basically when I when I parked it
- 7:02Speaker 3: back up, all the pistons were going, and he come
- 7:05Speaker 3: out and he went, he went, he did just park
- 7:06Speaker 3: It didn't went, Yes, Simon, Yeah, of course I did
- 7:09Speaker 3: literally four wheels off the off the floor and then wow.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And then the last story that I had heard, Bye
- 7:16Speaker 1: Bye Bye.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Which in Sync released. Did it come to you boys? First?
- 7:22Speaker 3: It did, but it wasn't formed. That's all that they
- 7:25Speaker 3: had at the time was the hook, which is a
- 7:27Speaker 3: very good hook. At They had that part, and we
- 7:31Speaker 3: were working it and writing it and Jay was doing
- 7:35Speaker 3: like a melodic wrap over it, which because I'm ray Man,
- 7:37Speaker 3: I remember and and quite literally we were doing it
- 7:40Speaker 3: and it just wasn't feeling right because obviously it was
- 7:42Speaker 3: always meant to be an end Sync song. So well, yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 3: our kids have actually said and they shown that they
- 7:48Speaker 3: like one of the moments that we didn't do it
- 7:50Speaker 3: and it obviously wasn't meant to be, because it doesn't
- 7:53Speaker 3: mean it couldn't have worked.
- 7:54Speaker 4: It did sound like Ken Sink in the studio sound.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I only learned very very like a couple of days
- 8:00Speaker 3: ago or a week ago, because one of the insinct
- 8:03Speaker 3: I think it was Joey he said that slam was
- 8:06Speaker 3: offered to them. Oh wow, yeah, well yeah, what He's
- 8:11Speaker 3: come out in an interview very recently said that slam
- 8:13Speaker 3: was offered to them and they didn't take it, so
- 8:16Speaker 3: it's meant to be had.
- 8:19Speaker 1: There you go, no surprises here. I have tickets to
- 8:21Speaker 1: the show tomorrow just so you know I will be there.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I will be there. Boys. It's a pleasure to meet you.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Thank you for being open, thank you for being like
- 8:30Speaker 1: I mean, I guess those stories you know how much
- 8:32Speaker 1: they mean to the fans. And I appreciate you because sometimes,
- 8:34Speaker 1: you know, I meet artists that are like, I'm not
- 8:36Speaker 1: telling this again for the fiftieth time, but I appreciate that.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I appreciate the time.
- 8:40Speaker 5: I appreciate you.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Thank you, no, thank you for being.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Here Entertainment Center tomorrow.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Absolutely, and then Brisbane and then Melbourne next weekend.
- 8:49Speaker 5: And it legitimately is a banger
