- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast. It's time for
- 0:08Speaker 1: the week eight reaction. If you're new to the podcast,
- 0:11Speaker 1: hit that like and subscribe button so we can continue
- 0:14Speaker 1: to give you great content. Mitchell, you called it. This
- 0:18Speaker 1: Lions Vikings game was a slugfest. I thought the Vikings
- 0:22Speaker 1: would give them more trouble than they did, but Jameer
- 0:24Speaker 1: Gibbs put the team on his back. I know you
- 0:27Speaker 1: were nervous throughout that game. The team got banged up
- 0:30Speaker 1: throughout this game, lost five starters on the defensive side
- 0:33Speaker 1: of the football. How are you feeling now?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Richard, I'm enthusiastic to say the least. This was a
- 0:38Speaker 2: massive win, a divisional win. The Lions improved to 5-2,
- 0:43Speaker 2: give the Vikings their first loss of the season, and
- 0:46Speaker 2: it kind of unfolded how we expected it would. It
- 0:49Speaker 2: was a battle, and the Vikings proved they have one
- 0:52Speaker 2: of the best, if not the best, defenses in the league,
- 0:55Speaker 2: led by the mastermind, Brian Flores. Richard, I want to
- 0:59Speaker 2: start with your thoughts because I could go on for days.
- 1:03Speaker 2: How do you feel about this Lions team after they
- 1:07Speaker 2: beat and knocked off the undefeated Minnesota Vikings?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Well, I'm going to tell you something, Mitchell. I was
- 1:14Speaker 1: concerned coming into this game that their defense, the Lions
- 1:18Speaker 1: defense and Kelvin Shepard would Have a hard time with
- 1:22Speaker 1: this offense. Even though the Minnesota Vikings offense and Kyler Murray,
- 1:26Speaker 1: they haven't been world beaters necessarily. Kyler had 210 passing yards,
- 1:31Speaker 1: two touchdowns, but did have that interception in the game.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But give Jameer Gibbs a ton of credit. One of
- 1:39Speaker 1: the best ways to play great defense is to run
- 1:42Speaker 1: the football effectively and chew up the clock so your
- 1:45Speaker 1: defense doesn't have to be out there as long. And
- 1:48Speaker 1: they did a good job running right into the teeth
- 1:51Speaker 1: of this defense over and over and over again. You
- 1:54Speaker 1: said it before we got on the show. Sione Vaki
- 1:57Speaker 1: only had 11 carries for 65 yards. But every one
- 2:01Speaker 1: of those yards were valuable in a game like this.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He gave Jameer Gibbs a break when he needed it. Obviously,
- 2:07Speaker 1: Jameer Gibbs, 23 carries, 153 yards. He was outstanding on
- 2:11Speaker 1: the day. The Vikings defense did get to Jared Goff
- 2:14Speaker 1: four times. They created chaos. They wrecked havoc in that
- 2:17Speaker 1: past game. But the run game of this Detroit Lions
- 2:23Speaker 1: offense was the difference, and it made Kelvin Shepard and
- 2:27Speaker 1: this defense's life a lot easier. Prayers up to the
- 2:33Speaker 1: guys that they lost today. Jack Campbell, you know, went
- 2:36Speaker 1: off on the stretcher. You know, fingers crossed that he's okay.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It didn't look great. You really couldn't see the injury
- 2:43Speaker 1: or what it potentially was, but The way the players
- 2:47Speaker 1: reacted and how many guys came on that field, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: you could almost see tears in guys' eyes. It makes
- 2:53Speaker 1: me very concerned that they at least think it's something serious.
- 2:58Speaker 1: But Brian Branch went out. I mean, the defense was
- 3:01Speaker 1: playing really hard, and I think there was a third
- 3:04Speaker 1: and five at the end of this game for all
- 3:08Speaker 1: the marbles. And Kyler Murray went deep to Addison, and
- 3:12Speaker 1: it was incomplete, but that felt to me Like, it
- 3:15Speaker 1: was for Kelvin Shepard's job. Hey, you make this stop, great. Like,
- 3:20Speaker 1: I think you're going to coach the rest of the season.
- 3:22Speaker 1: If they would have completed that pass, they would have
- 3:24Speaker 1: got a first down and iced that game or went
- 3:28Speaker 1: on to score, I think we'd be having a different conversation.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But that was great. That was great growth from this
- 3:33Speaker 1: Detroit Lions defense, even with all the injuries, even with
- 3:37Speaker 1: the chaos. You lose a leader like a captain, a
- 3:40Speaker 1: leader like Jack Campbell in the middle of a game,
- 3:42Speaker 1: sometimes that can send your team spiraling. Instead, they were motivated,
- 3:46Speaker 1: they were inspired, and they played inspired football throughout the
- 3:50Speaker 1: end of that game and came out with a huge
- 3:52Speaker 1: divisional win.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I love to see it as well, Richard. And like
- 3:56Speaker 2: you said, prayers up for Jack Campbell. Obviously, all Detroit's
- 4:00Speaker 2: behind Jack. He's a huge piece of this defense. He
- 4:03Speaker 2: wears a green dot. They drafted him high out of Iowa. Obviously,
- 4:08Speaker 2: the coaching staff has a lot of great things to
- 4:09Speaker 2: say about him, but Back to this Lions running game. Richard,
- 4:13Speaker 2: this was the story of the second half. Over 150
- 4:16Speaker 2: rushing yards in this second half to take over this game.
- 4:20Speaker 2: The Lions don't go a half a football without scoring
- 4:23Speaker 2: a touchdown very often. They did that in the first
- 4:26Speaker 2: half this game. And it seems like they went to
- 4:28Speaker 2: the locker room and said, hey, if we're going to
- 4:30Speaker 2: win this game, we got to rely on our bell cow,
- 4:34Speaker 2: Jameer Gibbs. The unsung hero, as you mentioned, Sione Vaki,
- 4:38Speaker 2: a former fourth-round pick out of Utah. He played safety.
- 4:41Speaker 2: He played running back at Utah. The guy's been injured
- 4:44Speaker 2: for the most of his career. Dan Campbell has always
- 4:47Speaker 2: spoken highly of him. He's been more of a special
- 4:49Speaker 2: teams ace. He's finally got his opportunity, and today, 11
- 4:53Speaker 2: rushes for 65 yards. That was the icing on the
- 4:58Speaker 2: cake that gave the Lions this victory, in my opinion.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Then you look at Jamison Williams, four receptions for 70
- 5:04Speaker 2: yards and a touchdown. I love what I see from
- 5:06Speaker 2: the Lions right now. This is a statement win. This
- 5:09Speaker 2: is a foundational win for their season. They're going to
- 5:12Speaker 2: be going to Miami next week, and then they're going
- 5:14Speaker 2: to be going to Germany to face the Pats. The
- 5:17Speaker 2: Lions have some winnable games ahead of them. I think
- 5:19Speaker 2: they can climb and retake control of this divisional race,
- 5:23Speaker 2: and it started with this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Now let's flip to the Vikings and let's talk about
- 5:29Speaker 2: them a little bit here because obviously, Richard, their defense
- 5:32Speaker 2: is nasty. They've proven it week after week after week,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and here it was, their biggest test of the season
- 5:38Speaker 2: against one of the top offenses in the league, and
- 5:41Speaker 2: they held their ground. But this offense, Richard, against the
- 5:45Speaker 2: league's worst defense in the league in the Detroit Lions,
- 5:49Speaker 2: granted they've been playing better the last couple weeks, but
- 5:52Speaker 2: this is still statistically the worst defense in the league
- 5:55Speaker 2: And the Vikings just could not get anything going. They
- 5:58Speaker 2: seemed to be just an easy out offensively. With that
- 6:02Speaker 2: being said, I know Minnesota's got a championship defense. After
- 6:06Speaker 2: what you saw today, do you take Minnesota serious as
- 6:09Speaker 2: a contender in this NFL?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Well, it's a reason they're in a Jonathan Taylor hunt.
- 6:15Speaker 1: They're in a Jonathan Taylor sweepstakes because they can't seem
- 6:19Speaker 1: to run the football effectively. I feel like Kevin O'Connell...
- 6:22Speaker 1: thinks his offensive line is solid enough and opening up
- 6:25Speaker 1: big enough holes for these guys to run through. But
- 6:28Speaker 1: Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones just aren't getting it done
- 6:32Speaker 1: right now for this team. And I think Jonathan Taylor
- 6:34Speaker 1: will be a huge upgrade over both of those players.
- 6:36Speaker 1: But they're one of the half-baked teams in the National
- 6:40Speaker 1: Football League. I've said it before. I'll keep saying it.
- 6:42Speaker 1: There are very few complete teams in the National Football League.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think the San Francisco 49ers and now the Seattle
- 6:48Speaker 1: Seahawks with the addition of Quentin Nelson. and everything that
- 6:53Speaker 1: he brings and how he will improve that running game.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They're also in the John VanTaylor sweepstakes and also getting
- 7:03Speaker 1: Jadarian Price and Charbonnet back. We'll see how long it
- 7:07Speaker 1: takes them to get Charles Cross, their star left tackle, back.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But outside of them, the Kansas City Chiefs, they're a
- 7:15Speaker 1: bunch of teams with either a great offense– in a
- 7:18Speaker 1: subpar defense or a great defense in a subpar offense.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That's throughout the league. And you can look at the
- 7:26Speaker 1: Detroit Lions, the Buffalo Bills, the Minnesota Vikings. The list
- 7:31Speaker 1: goes on and on and on of teams that you
- 7:34Speaker 1: could say one side of the ball is premier and
- 7:36Speaker 1: the other side, if they show up and play competent football,
- 7:40Speaker 1: that team is tough to beat. So I think the Lions,
- 7:44Speaker 1: if they play like they did today defensively, They are
- 7:47Speaker 1: one of the top teams in the National Football League
- 7:50Speaker 1: and definitely going to climb in these power rankings. And
- 7:53Speaker 1: then this makes Jared Goff even more of a legit
- 7:57Speaker 1: MVP candidate. He's been putting up MVP numbers throughout the season,
- 8:01Speaker 1: but the Lions have had their fair share of struggles,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and now they're starting to find a rhythm. Now they're 5-2.
- 8:07Speaker 1: They're starting to separate themselves in this very tough division
- 8:11Speaker 1: and this very tough NFC, and we'll see if they
- 8:14Speaker 1: can continue that. And Richard, let's go to Denver.
- 8:16Speaker 2: We saw an absolute wild one as the Denver Broncos
- 8:20Speaker 2: prevailed over the Kansas City Chiefs. This team was down
- 8:23Speaker 2: 24-13 entering the fourth, looked lifeless. And thanks to Jonah Coleman,
- 8:29Speaker 2: this team got some life and scratched back in it
- 8:32Speaker 2: and ultimately won by four over Kansas City. Richard, what
- 8:36Speaker 2: do you make of this Denver Broncos win?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember you mentioning Jonah Coleman, uh, In the
- 8:44Speaker 1: week eight preview, if you guys haven't checked it out,
- 8:46Speaker 1: Mitchell called this one. And he had a huge impact
- 8:49Speaker 1: in this game. The comeback kids strike again. I'm sure
- 8:53Speaker 1: after this game, Sean Payton will have something to say
- 8:56Speaker 1: about Bo Nix and his offense. Always waiting until the
- 8:58Speaker 1: fourth quarter to kind of get going. But again, 28
- 9:02Speaker 1: points in the game. The Kansas City Chiefs had a chance,
- 9:05Speaker 1: had a chance. Right there, the last drive of the game,
- 9:08Speaker 1: they were at or near the one-yard line to get
- 9:10Speaker 1: a false start. Penalty called on them, pushing back five yards,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and they get after Patrick Mahomes as they should, sack
- 9:17Speaker 1: him on the final play of the game. It was
- 9:20Speaker 1: a dogfight of a divisional game. You could see there
- 9:22Speaker 1: was an obvious emphasis that Vance Joseph put on stopping
- 9:26Speaker 1: Kenneth Walker. He had 21 carries for only 69 yards
- 9:30Speaker 1: in this game, four catches for 15 yards. But Emmitt Johnson,
- 9:33Speaker 1: five catches on five targets for 128 yards and a touchdown.
- 9:36Speaker 1: He really sparked their offense in a huge way in
- 9:39Speaker 1: this game. kept him alive in a lot of situations.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Travis Kelsey, five for 67, always consistent. Rashi Rice, seven catch,
- 9:47Speaker 1: 53 yards. But I thought that the secondary of the
- 9:51Speaker 1: Denver Broncos did a great job of containing this receiving core.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Patrick Sertan, Riley Moss. Riley Moss almost had him an
- 9:57Speaker 1: interception in the end zone if it wasn't for such
- 10:00Speaker 1: great defense by Xavier Worthy. But give Bo Nix and
- 10:04Speaker 1: his offense a lot of credit. They made plays when
- 10:06Speaker 1: they needed to. They executed down the stretch, and his
- 10:09Speaker 1: defense stood up in a big way in the second half,
- 10:11Speaker 1: especially in the fourth quarter.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And they were able to convert in the red zone.
- 10:14Speaker 2: They had struggling to get it in at the one-yard line,
- 10:18Speaker 2: and ultimately fourth down ended up in the hands of
- 10:20Speaker 2: Jalen Waddell. Impressive by Bonex. And then let's go back
- 10:24Speaker 2: to Jonah Coleman, because I think one of the main
- 10:26Speaker 2: issues with this team was the lack of the run game.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You know, it's tough when you do not have a
- 10:32Speaker 2: reliable guy. Insert Jonah Coleman gets it done. 41 yards rushing,
- 10:36Speaker 2: 63 yards receiving, big go-ahead touchdown. But Let's talk more
- 10:41Speaker 2: about the Kansas City Chiefs. This is two losses in
- 10:43Speaker 2: a row. They look human. Patrick Mahomes doesn't lose these
- 10:46Speaker 2: type of games. What happens with Kansas City going forward?
- 10:50Speaker 2: Because ultimately they lost the stranglehold of this divisional lead.
- 10:54Speaker 2: They are now in second place of this division. Where
- 10:57Speaker 2: do the Chiefs go from here?
- 11:00Speaker 1: Well, I don't think, if you're Andy Reid, Andrew Reid's
- 11:02Speaker 1: a great coach in the National Football League, and he
- 11:04Speaker 1: has been for a while. I don't think he's going
- 11:06Speaker 1: to waver. I don't think Patrick Mahomes, this is a
- 11:08Speaker 1: team that's won Super Bowls. If you look at their
- 11:10Speaker 1: upcoming schedule, just like the Detroit Lions, they have some
- 11:14Speaker 1: favorable matchups. They got the Jets next. Then they got
- 11:17Speaker 1: the Falcons who struggled mightily against the Bucs today. And
- 11:21Speaker 1: then they got the Arizona Cardinals before they play Josh
- 11:25Speaker 1: Allen and the Buffalo Bills. So I think this team
- 11:27Speaker 1: is going to be fine. These are those games. This
- 11:30Speaker 1: is a game of the Denver Broncos. I think it
- 11:31Speaker 1: does more for the Denver Broncos than it does to
- 11:33Speaker 1: hurt the Kansas City Chiefs. I think it gives the
- 11:35Speaker 1: Denver Broncos confidence. I think, you know, there were some
- 11:40Speaker 1: conversation and conjecture about, you know, the play calling and
- 11:44Speaker 1: Sean Payton taking over from Davis Webb and, you know,
- 11:48Speaker 1: who Bo Nix is. And I think this does a
- 11:52Speaker 1: little bit to calm that down. Obviously it's not going to,
- 11:54Speaker 1: going to stop it in totality, but they, they, they again,
- 11:58Speaker 1: find a way in the fourth quarter to execute down
- 12:00Speaker 1: a stretch. And you gotta, you gotta appreciate and respect that.
- 12:04Speaker 1: They got some, some games coming up within the division and,
- 12:07Speaker 1: But again, these are games, these are winnable games. They
- 12:11Speaker 1: got the Carolina Panthers first in a winnable game. Carolina
- 12:14Speaker 1: Panthers struggled against the Green Bay Packers last week on
- 12:17Speaker 1: Thursday night. Then they got the Las Vegas Raiders who
- 12:21Speaker 1: can score with the best of them. But I think
- 12:23Speaker 1: the Denver Broncos are the better team there. Then a
- 12:25Speaker 1: real matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers who are in control
- 12:28Speaker 1: of that AFC North. So it's going to be interesting
- 12:31Speaker 1: down the stretch. The NFL has done a great job
- 12:32Speaker 1: with the scheduling this year. And I look forward to
- 12:35Speaker 1: seeing how Bo Nix continues to thrive. And also this
- 12:38Speaker 1: running back situation, as you mentioned. Jonah Coleman getting 11 carries. J.K.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Dobbins had some conversations and some quotes in the media
- 12:46Speaker 1: about how he feels about being kind of rotated and
- 12:50Speaker 1: phased out. And this game is going to only exacerbate
- 12:53Speaker 1: those issues.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Let's take it to Buffalo. I mean, this game was
- 12:56Speaker 2: supposed to be a slugfest as well. And then the
- 12:59Speaker 2: game started. Lamar Jackson, story of this one, goes out
- 13:02Speaker 2: on the first play after banging his thumb Word has
- 13:06Speaker 2: just come out that he's going to be on injured reserve.
- 13:09Speaker 2: He's going to require surgery on that right hand. Before
- 13:12Speaker 2: we get into this game, let's talk about the Ravens
- 13:14Speaker 2: as a whole. What does this do for the landscape
- 13:17Speaker 2: of their season? Because they've looked competitive with Huntley under center,
- 13:21Speaker 2: but he went out too. So the Ravens are 4-4.
- 13:24Speaker 2: They're in a very tough division. Do you think they're
- 13:28Speaker 2: at risk of missing the playoffs at this point?
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, they're very much at risk. Lamar Jackson is
- 13:37Speaker 1: the heart and soul of this team and really the
- 13:39Speaker 1: heart and soul of this city of Baltimore and everything
- 13:42Speaker 1: it stands for he's a representation of and the way
- 13:46Speaker 1: he plays the game and how dynamic he is and
- 13:50Speaker 1: it's unfortunate we aren't going to get to see him
- 13:53Speaker 1: likely for a while this season but like you said
- 13:59Speaker 1: Tyler Huntley usually comes in and plays competent does his
- 14:02Speaker 1: best Lamar Jackson impression, but with him out as well,
- 14:06Speaker 1: we end up with Joe Fagano. And, you know, I
- 14:12Speaker 1: really not a ton to say. You don't expect the
- 14:15Speaker 1: third string emergency quarterback to come in and kind of
- 14:18Speaker 1: light the world on fire, especially as inexperienced a player
- 14:21Speaker 1: as he is. And he didn't. He had an interception,
- 14:24Speaker 1: took three sacks in this game, was 10 for 21
- 14:27Speaker 1: for 91 yards. And at that point, Buffalo just stacked
- 14:32Speaker 1: the box and blitzed him. They brought pressure. They treated
- 14:35Speaker 1: him like a guy that they didn't have a ton
- 14:37Speaker 1: of respect for, and that's what you expect. Leonard and
- 14:41Speaker 1: his defensive staff knew what they had to do in
- 14:43Speaker 1: this game, and they did a good job. Josh Allen
- 14:47Speaker 1: was Josh Allen. He was 21-34, 289, two touchdowns, had
- 14:50Speaker 1: the interception, had the one-yard score. I think the Baltimore
- 14:54Speaker 1: defense stood up for as long as they could. They
- 14:56Speaker 1: battled as much as you can, but when the offense
- 14:58Speaker 1: isn't giving you any life, When they're not giving you much,
- 15:01Speaker 1: it's really tough to continue to play at that level.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Buffalo held the ball for 37 minutes of this 60-minute
- 15:07Speaker 1: ball game. So when you only get 22 minutes to
- 15:11Speaker 1: rest as a defense, it's tough. It's tough. They were
- 15:15Speaker 1: out there on that field all day. But give the
- 15:19Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills a lot of credit. They played well enough.
- 15:22Speaker 1: They did what they were supposed to do, came out
- 15:23Speaker 1: with the victory. They're on top of this ASC East,
- 15:26Speaker 1: continuing to look like a great contender in the National
- 15:29Speaker 1: Football League. They're number one in your power rankings, number
- 15:31Speaker 1: two in my power rankings, and I would guess they
- 15:33Speaker 1: stand there amongst the entire league's power rankings. Their defense
- 15:37Speaker 1: played well enough, and they got the win. I think
- 15:41Speaker 1: this changes the landscape of the AFC North considerably. Obviously,
- 15:45Speaker 1: the Browns and Pittsburgh play today. Pittsburgh Steelers pulling off
- 15:49Speaker 1: that impressive win with Aaron Rodgers in that run game.
- 15:53Speaker 1: They did a great job, and It's way more competitive
- 15:57Speaker 1: of a division than you would think. Now with the
- 15:59Speaker 1: Browns 5-2 or 5-3. They're 5-3. They're 5-3. Pittsburgh 6-2.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Jalen Warren is playing like one of the best backs
- 16:10Speaker 1: in the National Football League. Rico Dowdle is a competent backup.
- 16:14Speaker 1: He scored a touchdown today. And, I mean, you look
- 16:19Speaker 1: at Darnell Washington. Darnell Washington. We're going to get to
- 16:21Speaker 1: that Pittsburgh game, but Darnell Washington. Three catches for almost
- 16:24Speaker 1: 100 yards, 94 yards today on five targets. Hilarious. A
- 16:27Speaker 1: guy who's probably 304 pounds going for almost 100 yards
- 16:31Speaker 1: in the National Football League as a tight end is insane. But, yeah,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you know, it's unfortunate for this Ravens team. We have
- 16:38Speaker 1: them on Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Another tough
- 16:42Speaker 1: matchup for them, especially with Lamar Jackson on IR. And
- 16:46Speaker 1: you don't know what Tyler Huntley is going to be
- 16:48Speaker 1: on a short week. I wouldn't expect him to play
- 16:50Speaker 1: in this game. I'm sure they'll be in the quarterback
- 16:52Speaker 1: market to pick up a veteran free agent somewhere. But
- 16:56Speaker 1: this Jacksonville team is one of the best run defenses
- 16:59Speaker 1: in the National Football League. So you're not going to
- 17:00Speaker 1: just be able to turn around and hand it off
- 17:02Speaker 1: to Derrick Henry and think you're going to ride his
- 17:04Speaker 1: back all the way with no threat of a passing game.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So I don't know. I feel like Jacksonville is going
- 17:10Speaker 1: to win that game. It's tough sledding from here on
- 17:14Speaker 1: out for Baltimore. Yeah.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Listen, Buffalo, as a team, they're number one in my
- 17:19Speaker 2: power ranks for a reason. It's unfortunate Lamar went out.
- 17:23Speaker 2: But for the Baltimore Ravens defense to hold them to
- 17:26Speaker 2: 29 points and to give up that amount of time
- 17:29Speaker 2: of possession, I would consider it a win for them.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So we shall see how things progress forward for Baltimore.
- 17:35Speaker 2: But for Buffalo, I still got them number one, man.
- 17:39Speaker 2: This team's going to be tough, and they're going against
- 17:40Speaker 2: Minnesota next week.
- 17:42Speaker 1: That's the other.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Storyline with this Buffalo Bills and Minnesota's team, both 6-1.
- 17:48Speaker 2: It's going to be the matchup of the week next week. Minnesota,
- 17:52Speaker 2: we've called it a few times in our tenure here
- 17:55Speaker 2: on the Richard Sherman Podcast. I can foresee a little
- 17:58Speaker 2: bit of a losing streak ahead of the Minnesota Vikings.
- 18:02Speaker 1: We shall see, though.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Who's going to prove it and be that number one team?
- 18:06Speaker 2: I like Buffalo next week, but let's take it to
- 18:09Speaker 2: the Steelers. You already talked about The wonderful Darnell Washington.
- 18:13Speaker 1: One of a kind, man.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Three receptions for 94 yards. This was a prove-it game
- 18:18Speaker 2: for these Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams entered 5-2. Pittsburgh took
- 18:22Speaker 2: control of this game early and never relinquished it. The
- 18:25Speaker 2: story for me is Jalen Warren. This guy is having
- 18:27Speaker 2: a heck of a year. On his 28th birthday, he
- 18:29Speaker 2: showed up with 143 rushing yards and a touchdown. He's
- 18:33Speaker 2: done it on numerous weeks this year. He's one of
- 18:35Speaker 2: the best running backs statistically in football this year. This
- 18:39Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Steelers team, we've often questioned them. They're not the
- 18:43Speaker 2: most flashy team offensively. They just figure out a way
- 18:46Speaker 2: to win. Today, they had a little bit of flash
- 18:48Speaker 2: in their game. Richard, are you impressed at this point
- 18:51Speaker 2: with the Pittsburgh Steelers?
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I got to say I am, especially Jalen Warren.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Like you said, he's run the ball incredibly well all
- 19:00Speaker 1: season long. He's also been a weapon in the past game,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and he continued that today. He had 143 yards rushing.
- 19:09Speaker 1: He also had, you know, he only had one catch
- 19:12Speaker 1: for no yards in the past game. But he's been
- 19:15Speaker 1: a weapon all season long. But this defense, this defense
- 19:18Speaker 1: was the difference. I thought today they put a lot
- 19:21Speaker 1: of pressure on Deshaun Watson. They sacked him eight times
- 19:24Speaker 1: in this ball game. Everybody got a piece of him. T.J.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Watt had two of them. And when their defense plays
- 19:30Speaker 1: like that, I know Deshaun Watson threw for 300 yards,
- 19:32Speaker 1: but a lot of that was garbage time yards. They
- 19:34Speaker 1: were up playing preseason. Prevent defense and the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 19:38Speaker 1: were allowing them to play pitch and catch a little
- 19:41Speaker 1: bit to just walk away with this win. But Cam Hayward,
- 19:44Speaker 1: a guy came into the league when I came into
- 19:47Speaker 1: the league and had one and a half sacks today.
- 19:49Speaker 1: He continues to play. at a high level. They had
- 19:53Speaker 1: other guys step up today. Nick Herbig, who got the
- 19:56Speaker 1: big contract this offseason, had a sack today. Patrick Queen
- 19:59Speaker 1: had a sack and a half today. A lot of
- 20:01Speaker 1: guys contributed in a big way, and you love that
- 20:04Speaker 1: if you're this Pittsburgh defense. You love this if you're
- 20:09Speaker 1: a Pittsburgh fan. They're playing at a really high level.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And Aaron Rodgers, you know, it's not the best. This
- 20:14Speaker 1: isn't the best by any stretch of the imagination that
- 20:17Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers has played. But when you have a competent
- 20:20Speaker 1: run game behind you, he can find a way. He's
- 20:23Speaker 1: going to not lose the game for you. He was
- 20:26Speaker 1: 13-25 for 172 yards and interception. Nothing world-beating, but they
- 20:30Speaker 1: ran the football effectively. He managed the game effectively, and
- 20:33Speaker 1: they found a way to win a very tough divisional
- 20:36Speaker 1: game and take control of this AFC North. And that's
- 20:39Speaker 1: what you want. If you're a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, um,
- 20:43Speaker 1: is this sustainable? Will I, would I expect him to
- 20:46Speaker 1: beat Buffalo or, or Kansas city? Maybe not, but, um,
- 20:52Speaker 1: you know, this is going to be a very interesting
- 20:53Speaker 1: AFC race down the stretch.
- 20:56Speaker 2: It, I agree with you because they're going into the
- 20:59Speaker 2: bye 6-2. Their next game is against Cincinnati, and Cincinnati
- 21:03Speaker 2: held serve today. They came back in a win against
- 21:06Speaker 2: the Tennessee Titans in overtime. They're improving to 5-2, so
- 21:10Speaker 2: this is going to be another test for the Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 21:13Speaker 2: but they just keep seeming to answer the call week
- 21:17Speaker 2: after week. Again, it's not the most flashy, polished brand
- 21:21Speaker 2: of offensive football, but with this defense holding it down
- 21:25Speaker 2: against the Cleveland Browns, The other thing, 11 rushes for
- 21:28Speaker 2: 25 yards for Quinshawn Judkins. This is a guy that's
- 21:32Speaker 2: had some success over the last couple weeks. Pittsburgh did
- 21:35Speaker 2: it on all levels defensively today. And if Jalen Warren
- 21:38Speaker 2: can keep rolling, look out for Pittsburgh.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I need to tell you about this new prediction market
- 21:44Speaker 1: called Polymarket. It's the best new way to trade in sports.
- 21:49Speaker 2: In the past, if you wanted action on the game,
- 21:52Speaker 2: you put some money in. And if your team was
- 21:55Speaker 2: doing well... and you wanted to cash out, they'd lock
- 21:58Speaker 2: the trade or take a huge fee.
- 22:01Speaker 1: But Polymarket is a prediction market. It's a stock exchange
- 22:05Speaker 1: for sports, buying in and selling out on your terms.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Richard, I've tried them all, and Polymarket is simply the
- 22:12Speaker 2: best prediction market. It's better than DraftKings, it's better than FanDuel, CalSheet.
- 22:17Speaker 1: You name it. And they're so confident that you will
- 22:20Speaker 1: never go back to the other guys that they're giving
- 22:23Speaker 1: you a free $ 25 on your first trade when you
- 22:27Speaker 1: deposit just $ 10.
- 22:29Speaker 2: And now they've launched a new feature. It's called Squads,
- 22:32Speaker 2: a group chat where you can see what everyone is
- 22:35Speaker 2: trading on.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So download the Polymarket app today and use the promo
- 22:40Speaker 1: code Sherman when you sign up. That's S-H-E-R-M-A-N to get
- 22:43Speaker 1: $ 25 free after you deposit just $ 10.
- 22:50Speaker 2: It's time to enter the fourth quarter of the Richard
- 22:53Speaker 2: Sherman podcast. Richard, let's talk about that rainy, rainy game
- 22:58Speaker 2: down in Tampa. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the game
- 23:02Speaker 2: without completing a pass. It's the first time a team's
- 23:06Speaker 2: won a game without completing a pass since 1974. I
- 23:10Speaker 2: had to look it up five times just to make
- 23:12Speaker 2: sure this was right. Baker Mayfield 0-3, but this running
- 23:16Speaker 2: game took control of this game. Gainwell for 140, Bucky
- 23:20Speaker 2: Irving for 170. The Buccaneers with Baker Mayfield back under center. Granted,
- 23:26Speaker 2: he hasn't done a whole lot over the last couple
- 23:28Speaker 2: weeks statistically, but he's resulted in two wins. This Buccaneers
- 23:33Speaker 2: team in this NFC South, do you like them, Rich?
- 23:37Speaker 2: Because everyone else in this division seems to be losing,
- 23:40Speaker 2: and the Buccaneers have been on a winning streak of late.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Well, it's a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately kind of division. And that's NFC South.
- 23:50Speaker 1: And who does it at the end of the season
- 23:53Speaker 1: is going to be the tale of the tale. I
- 23:55Speaker 1: had the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning this division. Not this way.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I didn't think they would struggle as much as they have.
- 24:03Speaker 1: And I didn't think Baker Mayfield was struggling the way
- 24:05Speaker 1: he has. I didn't think Bucky Irvin would have the
- 24:07Speaker 1: season he's having. But he is. Bucky Irvin, 27 for 170.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I think he's been a leading rusher in the National
- 24:15Speaker 1: Football League over the last four weeks. He's been fantastic
- 24:18Speaker 1: for this team. Kenneth Gainwell spelled him. It's rare that
- 24:21Speaker 1: you have two backs both with over 25 carries in
- 24:25Speaker 1: a football game on the same team, and they both
- 24:28Speaker 1: average over 5.6 a carry. Fantastic game for them. Over
- 24:34Speaker 1: 324 yards rushing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brilliant game
- 24:38Speaker 1: for them, and their defense really got after Michael Penix
- 24:42Speaker 1: in a big way. Four turnovers, four interceptions thrown by
- 24:46Speaker 1: Michael Penix. He also had a fumble, but he was
- 24:48Speaker 1: able to recover it. Your guy, you know, former Detroit Lion,
- 24:52Speaker 1: Alex Anzalone gets him one. Zion McCollum gets him one.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Or actually, Alex Anzalone gets him two. My bad, Mitchell.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I don't want to be disrespectful here to a former Lion.
- 25:05Speaker 1: And Jacob Parrish gets him one. This defense, they're getting
- 25:09Speaker 1: back to their roots, and Todd Bowles is getting back
- 25:11Speaker 1: to his roots. And it started with that Dallas Cowboys
- 25:14Speaker 1: game a few weeks ago where they put incredible pressure
- 25:17Speaker 1: on Dak Prescott, play in and play out. And it
- 25:20Speaker 1: seems like their confidence as a defense is growing week
- 25:23Speaker 1: in and week out in a muggy, muddy, wet game
- 25:27Speaker 1: like this where you're not going to be able to
- 25:29Speaker 1: throw the ball as well. You're not going to be
- 25:31Speaker 1: able to do as much damage down the field. A
- 25:34Speaker 1: team that stops to run as well as anybody in
- 25:36Speaker 1: the National Football League and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, this
- 25:39Speaker 1: plays right into their hands, and that's what they did.
- 25:41Speaker 1: They held Bajon Robinson 19 carries for 76 yards, and
- 25:45Speaker 1: that may not seem like a great defensive game to
- 25:48Speaker 1: anybody else, but when you flip on the other side,
- 25:52Speaker 1: both backs have over 25 carries and over 140 yards,
- 25:56Speaker 1: you start to see the impact that this Tampa Bay
- 25:59Speaker 1: Buccaneers defense had on this game, and you got to
- 26:03Speaker 1: give them credit. You got to give Todd Bowles credit.
- 26:05Speaker 1: he has these guys prepared. They could have just folded
- 26:07Speaker 1: the season up and said, we're done. You know, this
- 26:10Speaker 1: isn't our year. They continue to fight and they got
- 26:12Speaker 1: a good chance to continue to make a run at
- 26:15Speaker 1: this NFC South division crown.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Well, they're certainly going to be tested over the next
- 26:21Speaker 2: few weeks. They're at Chicago and then at Detroit, these
- 26:24Speaker 2: next two games for them. So We shall see if
- 26:27Speaker 2: they can keep the momentum rolling. Let's take it to Jacksonville.
- 26:30Speaker 2: The Jacksonville Jaguars absolutely demolished Indianapolis Colts 42-7. This game
- 26:35Speaker 2: was over at halftime, 28-0 at half. Trevor Lawrence had
- 26:40Speaker 2: his way, only completed 10 passes on 14 attempts, but
- 26:43Speaker 2: 210 yards and 3 touchdowns with those 10 passes. Michelle
- 26:48Speaker 2: Tootin with a nice run as well, over 104 rushing
- 26:50Speaker 2: yards and a touchdown. We've talked a lot about this
- 26:53Speaker 2: Jacksonville Jaguars team. I know you've always had your hesitations
- 26:57Speaker 2: about giving them credit. But to me, Richard, Jacksonville looks
- 27:01Speaker 2: like a force to be reckoned with in the AFC.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Do you agree? No question about it. And, you know,
- 27:08Speaker 1: our confidence in them has continued to grow throughout this season.
- 27:11Speaker 1: They're 5-2. And, again, they've got one of the best
- 27:14Speaker 1: receiving cores in the National Football League. Trevor Lawrence only
- 27:17Speaker 1: had to throw the ball 14 times today. because of
- 27:20Speaker 1: how in control they were of this game. But he
- 27:22Speaker 1: threw for three touchdowns, ten completions, and three touchdowns. Mitchell,
- 27:27Speaker 1: quite the percentage. And, I mean, they continued to be
- 27:33Speaker 1: a defensive force. And I love watching this defense play.
- 27:36Speaker 1: They force turnovers. They put pressure on quarterbacks. They get
- 27:41Speaker 1: after it. They do a great job against the run.
- 27:43Speaker 1: They did a great job against the run today holding up.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Jacksonville out of the end zone on the ground and,
- 27:51Speaker 1: and Jacksonville held Jonathan Taylor out of this game because they're,
- 27:54Speaker 1: they're going to trade him. And there are rumors that
- 27:57Speaker 1: people think he's going to Seattle because of what Mike
- 28:00Speaker 1: McDonald said in a press conference about a transaction happening
- 28:04Speaker 1: on Monday. I don't know what that means, but if
- 28:06Speaker 1: Jonathan Taylor goes to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, then
- 28:09Speaker 1: maybe Mike McDonald was way ahead of the curve. And maybe,
- 28:13Speaker 1: maybe somebody's probably not too happy about that, but it
- 28:16Speaker 1: is what it is. Um, The Colts seem to be
- 28:20Speaker 1: giving up on the season. Ed Dodds has traded away
- 28:23Speaker 1: multiple pro bowlers and Quentin Nelson and DeForest Buckner and,
- 28:30Speaker 1: you know, about to trade away Jonathan Taylor. He didn't
- 28:32Speaker 1: play in this game. Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars
- 28:35Speaker 1: in this ferocious defense continue to play well, continue to
- 28:38Speaker 1: impose their will on teams. They go on a short
- 28:41Speaker 1: week to Baltimore to play the Baltimore Ravens in a
- 28:45Speaker 1: game I think is a very, very, very winnable game
- 28:47Speaker 1: for them. a game that they should dominate with this
- 28:51Speaker 1: receiving court, this running game, this defense and the pressure
- 28:54Speaker 1: they put on teams. I think this team is going to,
- 28:59Speaker 1: going to make a lot of noise. And again, you
- 29:01Speaker 1: wonder why the Baltimore Ravens, I don't have a lot
- 29:03Speaker 1: of confidence in them making the playoffs because there are
- 29:06Speaker 1: so many strong teams in this AFC that are making
- 29:09Speaker 1: a run. And Jacksonville is right near the top of
- 29:11Speaker 1: that list.
- 29:13Speaker 2: What a, Brutal calendar year it's been for the Indianapolis Colts.
- 29:17Speaker 2: This team was one of the hottest teams in football
- 29:19Speaker 2: at this point last year, and then they made the
- 29:21Speaker 2: Sauce Gardner trade, and then Daniel Jones got hurt. And
- 29:24Speaker 2: ever since then, this team has just not regained their footing.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Now they're in a fire sale. I hate to say
- 29:29Speaker 2: it because I know you've hyped up Jonathan Taylor to
- 29:32Speaker 2: the Seattle Seahawks, but Adam Schefter just came out and
- 29:35Speaker 2: said that the final four teams in the sweepstakes for
- 29:37Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor are the Broncos, the Giants, Packers, and Vikings.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Which one of those four teams do you think would
- 29:46Speaker 2: benefit most from the services of Jonathan Taylor?
- 29:50Speaker 1: Well, I think you've got to say it's the Vikings.
- 29:53Speaker 1: They've got the best record amongst those teams. And obviously
- 29:56Speaker 1: they have a need at the position to get more explosive. And,
- 29:59Speaker 1: you know, I think he could help them, but I'm
- 30:02Speaker 1: sure all those teams, they would feel like he could help.
- 30:05Speaker 1: The Green Bay Packers are a team, you know, with
- 30:10Speaker 1: uncertainty at running back and just have shown no juice,
- 30:13Speaker 1: even though they've been winning games. They've shown no juice
- 30:15Speaker 1: in the backfield, no real consistent running game. Even once
- 30:18Speaker 1: Josh Jacobs returned, he looked kind of sluggish, a little
- 30:22Speaker 1: bit overweight, and you know, he could help that team.
- 30:25Speaker 1: But we'll see. We'll see how it all shakes out.
- 30:28Speaker 1: He'll help somebody. I want to talk about Kirk Cousins
- 30:32Speaker 1: and his Raiders team. You know, this Raiders team, they're 4-4.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And they had the number one pick in the draft
- 30:39Speaker 1: last year. They're playing a Jets team that's been struggling.
- 30:42Speaker 1: They're 2-6 now. They beat this Jets team. But Kirk
- 30:45Speaker 1: Cousins is having an incredible season. He has five interceptions,
- 30:51Speaker 1: but he's leading the league. And touchdown passes with 19 now.
- 30:54Speaker 1: He had three more in this game. He was 19
- 30:57Speaker 1: to 26, 247 yards. And you see the change they made.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You know, you heard Rex Ryan talk about Ashton Genting.
- 31:04Speaker 1: You heard me talk about Ashton Genting and the disappointment
- 31:06Speaker 1: that he's been. And maybe it's time to give Mike
- 31:10Speaker 1: Washington more carries. And guess what? There it is. They
- 31:13Speaker 1: gave Mike Washington more carries. 25 carries for 83 yards.
- 31:17Speaker 1: The rushing run game came alive more. Brock Bowers has
- 31:20Speaker 1: another good game, 92 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Matt
- 31:25Speaker 1: Crosby has a sack. It was a fun game for
- 31:28Speaker 1: this team. On the flip side, not an awful game
- 31:32Speaker 1: offensively for the Jets. They just couldn't get any stops,
- 31:35Speaker 1: and I think that's the issue for this team. Geno Smith, 20-32,
- 31:40Speaker 1: 290 passing yards, two touchdowns to one interception. Braylon Allen,
- 31:44Speaker 1: 21 carries, 147 yards rushing. Adonai Mitchell, seven catches for
- 31:49Speaker 1: 142 yards. They're finding different ways and getting different guys
- 31:53Speaker 1: involved and pushing the ball down the field. No defense
- 31:56Speaker 1: being played in this game. The Raiders win this one 38-33,
- 31:59Speaker 1: but I just wanted to mention the season that Kirk
- 32:02Speaker 1: Cousins is having because you talk about Mendoza coming in,
- 32:07Speaker 1: as the number one pick, and everybody's talking about, oh, man,
- 32:10Speaker 1: Kirk's the Band-Aid, and he's just going to play for
- 32:12Speaker 1: a couple games until Mendoza gets comfortable, but he's turning
- 32:15Speaker 1: that opportunity into a heck of a season.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yeah, everyone thought the book on Kirk Cousins was coming
- 32:21Speaker 2: to a close after his days with Atlanta, and obviously
- 32:24Speaker 2: he came back from the Achilles injury that he suffered
- 32:27Speaker 2: in Minnesota, and then they drafted Michael Penix, but here
- 32:30Speaker 2: he is, man, leading the charge, and every time I
- 32:32Speaker 2: talk about Kirk Cousins, I got to bring up He's
- 32:34Speaker 2: a Michigan State Spartan, a fellow Michigan State Spartan, Richard.
- 32:38Speaker 2: That's the reason he's having a lot of success. Let's
- 32:40Speaker 2: talk a little bit about the Jets, though, because we
- 32:42Speaker 2: see the Indianapolis Colts going in a fire sale mode.
- 32:46Speaker 2: The Jets are now 2-6, and we've seen with Braylon Allen.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I mean, they got a competent rusher behind Brees Hall
- 32:51Speaker 2: who's been injured. At what point did the Jets start
- 32:55Speaker 2: to say, hey, let's put ourselves in this buyer's market
- 32:59Speaker 2: out there and start selling off some of these assets
- 33:01Speaker 2: we have as well? Because it seems like Brees Hall
- 33:03Speaker 2: could be somebody that will be worth trading off at
- 33:06Speaker 2: this point. Keep in mind, however, the Jets also have
- 33:09Speaker 2: three first-round picks that are looking very good right now.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I think they're going to be in that mode, and
- 33:19Speaker 1: we'll see how much they're in that mode. You'll see
- 33:24Speaker 1: if they want to bring back Aaron Glenn. I think
- 33:26Speaker 1: sometimes teams want to associate a total rebuild with everything,
- 33:30Speaker 1: tear it all down and come back up, especially when
- 33:32Speaker 1: you have that many first-round picks in draft capital. Maybe
- 33:36Speaker 1: you will go out there and you see your franchise
- 33:38Speaker 1: quarterback out there. I mean, Geno Smith is playing solid football,
- 33:42Speaker 1: so I don't even think you can really put all
- 33:44Speaker 1: this on Geno Smith. I think there are a number
- 33:46Speaker 1: of areas, especially on the defensive side of the football,
- 33:49Speaker 1: that you've got to get shored up. You trade away
- 33:52Speaker 1: Quentin Williams. You trade away Sauce Gardner. There are some
- 33:56Speaker 1: holes out there on defense that you've got to get
- 33:59Speaker 1: an injection of talent to. So I don't know. I
- 34:04Speaker 1: think it all starts with what they believe. If they
- 34:07Speaker 1: believe Aaron Glenn is in the future of the Jets,
- 34:10Speaker 1: and if they do, then that I think kind of
- 34:13Speaker 1: dictates whether you go full fire sale or not. But
- 34:16Speaker 1: if they don't think he's in the plan, then I
- 34:17Speaker 1: think you go fire sale and you bring another guy
- 34:20Speaker 1: in there who you think is going to be ready
- 34:22Speaker 1: for this rebuild.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Well, it's certainly going to be a desirable job for
- 34:25Speaker 2: anyone that wants to take it because one of the
- 34:27Speaker 2: team's draft picks that they hold is the Dallas Cowboys,
- 34:30Speaker 2: who just lost in overtime against the Arizona Cardinals. Richard,
- 34:35Speaker 2: this East, we talked about it, maybe the Dallas Cowboys
- 34:39Speaker 2: can take control of it now that the Philadelphia Eagles
- 34:42Speaker 2: are treading water and just clinging on for a deal
- 34:45Speaker 2: of life. And then you've got the New York Giants
- 34:48Speaker 2: running away with it at this point. The Dallas Cowboys
- 34:50Speaker 2: had a 14-3 lead at half, looked like they had
- 34:53Speaker 2: complete control of this game, then gave up 20 points
- 34:57Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter to the Arizona Cardinals, led by
- 34:59Speaker 2: Gardner Minshew, who just did not care at all, threw
- 35:02Speaker 2: for three touchdowns, 188 yards. What do you make of
- 35:06Speaker 2: the Dallas Cowboys midway through the season?
- 35:10Speaker 1: Well, I'm not impressed. They've lost three of their last
- 35:12Speaker 1: four games. And them beating the Philadelphia Eagles, I mean,
- 35:16Speaker 1: I'm sure Dallas Cowboys fans, there's rivalry, there's all this conjecture,
- 35:20Speaker 1: but that wasn't a very good Philadelphia Eagles team. You
- 35:23Speaker 1: look at what, again, it started with Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Buccaneers blitzed them until the Cowboys came home
- 35:30Speaker 1: and beat them in that game with the backup undrafted
- 35:33Speaker 1: free agent rookie quarterback. And then you look up and
- 35:36Speaker 1: then Green Bay has their way with them and beats
- 35:39Speaker 1: them 23-13. And then they beat the Eagles and then
- 35:42Speaker 1: they lose this game. Against the Cardinals team, this was
- 35:45Speaker 1: their signature win for Mike LaFleur. So I just, I
- 35:52Speaker 1: don't know. They got the Colts next, a team that's
- 35:55Speaker 1: in fire sale mode, so maybe they win that one.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I don't think the winner of the NFC East is
- 35:59Speaker 1: going to really factor into the playoff race and who's
- 36:03Speaker 1: going to win the Super Bowl. Maybe they can upset
- 36:05Speaker 1: somebody at times. Dallas has played really well offensively, defensively.
- 36:10Speaker 1: You're starting to see some of these guys they thought
- 36:12Speaker 1: they would get some huge impact from maybe not being
- 36:15Speaker 1: the guys they thought they were. And Caleb Downs is
- 36:17Speaker 1: a guy that I look at that they were saying
- 36:20Speaker 1: was a tone setter, a culture maker, a guy who
- 36:25Speaker 1: is going to change the trajectory of this defense. And
- 36:27Speaker 1: he just hasn't been that in any of these games.
- 36:30Speaker 1: There's no real ball production. Sure, there's some tackles made,
- 36:34Speaker 1: great hustle. things that you expect from an NFL player,
- 36:36Speaker 1: but you're just not seeing what you would need to
- 36:39Speaker 1: see for a guy drafted as high as he was drafted. Uh,
- 36:42Speaker 1: DeMarvion Overshawn made some plays last week to help them, uh,
- 36:45Speaker 1: win that game against the Eagles. But again, this game,
- 36:49Speaker 1: you're just not seeing the impact and all the names
- 36:52Speaker 1: that you have on this defense, the guys who have
- 36:54Speaker 1: played at a high level, other places are even here
- 36:57Speaker 1: like Deron Bland just aren't having the seasons that they
- 37:00Speaker 1: probably wish they could have. And, and that's all coming
- 37:02Speaker 1: in for coming, uh, to roost here to let Gardner
- 37:06Speaker 1: Minshew come in and really go off 17 to 23
- 37:11Speaker 1: for three touchdowns. A guy who was very dangerous off
- 37:14Speaker 1: the bench, a guy who you really don't want to
- 37:16Speaker 1: see if you're a defense as a backup quarterback, because
- 37:19Speaker 1: he doesn't have a governor. He doesn't have a, nah,
- 37:22Speaker 1: I'm worried about my efficiency numbers. He's like, Hey, I'm
- 37:24Speaker 1: a sling it a true gunslinger. And he had, he
- 37:27Speaker 1: played a great game against these guys. And Michael Wilson was,
- 37:30Speaker 1: I'm sure excited to see him come into ball game
- 37:32Speaker 1: and because he thrived once he got in there. He
- 37:35Speaker 1: ended up with 11 catches for 147 yards. Sorry, he
- 37:39Speaker 1: had eight catches for 111 yards. But Tyler Algier, Jeremiah
- 37:44Speaker 1: Love goes out of this game, and he was only
- 37:46Speaker 1: averaged 2.6 a carry. And then Tyler Algier, 11 carries
- 37:50Speaker 1: for 147 yards. I think these young draft picks and
- 37:54Speaker 1: these pundits get so caught up on how impactful these
- 37:57Speaker 1: guys are going to be, and it's rarely the case.
- 37:59Speaker 1: It's rarely the case that you see a guy come
- 38:01Speaker 1: in Outside of Bajon Robinson, your guy Jameer Gibbs, there's
- 38:04Speaker 1: a couple guys that have come in and made impact,
- 38:06Speaker 1: but lately these guys have not. And it starts with
- 38:09Speaker 1: Ashton Jutti and now Jeremiah Love, and you have such
- 38:15Speaker 1: high expectations. They're like, why would they get Tyler Algier?
- 38:18Speaker 1: This is why you get Tyler Algier for moments like this.
- 38:21Speaker 1: He's shown that he's a capable running back in the
- 38:23Speaker 1: National Football League. This isn't collegiate success. When he was
- 38:26Speaker 1: in Atlanta, he showed he could be an every-down back.
- 38:29Speaker 1: He could be a lead back, and he showed it
- 38:31Speaker 1: again in this game. He sure did.
- 38:34Speaker 2: And credit to Arizona, knocked off Dallas and also took
- 38:37Speaker 2: care of the Rams as well. So they've got a
- 38:39Speaker 2: couple big wins on their resume. Let's take it to Cincinnati.
- 38:44Speaker 2: They took care of the Tennessee Titans. This matchup, everyone
- 38:46Speaker 2: expected Cincy to win, but not in this fashion. This
- 38:49Speaker 2: was an old-fashioned shootout.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Joe Burrow.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I mean, this stat line is wild. 38 of 48,
- 38:56Speaker 2: 462 yards, five touchdowns, including one on the ground as well.
- 39:01Speaker 2: What a ball game for him. Tee Higgins, 10 receptions,
- 39:04Speaker 2: 155 yards and two touchdowns. But I think the conversation
- 39:08Speaker 2: here needs to go to Cincinnati being five and two.
- 39:11Speaker 2: And this defense that we said, hey, you know, they
- 39:14Speaker 2: go out and get Dexter Lawrence. They're more competent against
- 39:17Speaker 2: the run. They're looking better defensively. Go out and get
- 39:20Speaker 2: your boy Boe Mafe out of Seattle. But yet you
- 39:24Speaker 2: give up 36 points to the Cam Ward-led Tennessee Titans.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Who is the Cincinnati Bengals team? Because the reality is
- 39:31Speaker 2: they are right in the thick of things for this
- 39:33Speaker 2: AFC North.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Well, I guess we're trying to figure that out as
- 39:39Speaker 1: they're trying to figure it out, Mitchell, and I'm going
- 39:41Speaker 1: to pull up all these stats for this game because
- 39:43Speaker 1: Joe Burrow Joe Burrow struggled early in this game. You know,
- 39:47Speaker 1: the turnovers kept happening. This Tennessee Titans defense was playing
- 39:50Speaker 1: with a lot of confidence, and it looked like he
- 39:52Speaker 1: wasn't going to find his rhythm today. And then he did.
- 39:55Speaker 1: And once he got hot, he did not stop to
- 39:58Speaker 1: the tune of 43 points. And I know this Bengals defense, again,
- 40:02Speaker 1: Bengals fans, I told you, like you guys tried to
- 40:05Speaker 1: convince me, oh, this is top 10 defense because the first,
- 40:08Speaker 1: it always falls back to the mean. It always, it
- 40:11Speaker 1: may waver up and down, but it always falls back
- 40:14Speaker 1: to the mean. And they did make a play in
- 40:17Speaker 1: this game, forcing a safety. Dexter Lawrence gets in the backfield.
- 40:20Speaker 1: They blitz at the perfect time, and they force a
- 40:24Speaker 1: safety in this game. And those points were important at
- 40:26Speaker 1: the time. But this was Cam Ward's best game as
- 40:30Speaker 1: a professional against his defense. And I think this is
- 40:34Speaker 1: one of those weird situations, and I know people may
- 40:36Speaker 1: kill me for this, where this was a win-win for
- 40:38Speaker 1: both teams. I think the Tennessee Titans showed they can
- 40:41Speaker 1: play well offensively. They can play better than they have.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Tony Pollard has a great game on the ground. Their
- 40:49Speaker 1: defense makes some plays, shows they have some big-time playmakers.
- 40:54Speaker 1: The guy, Amadi Hooker, made multiple interceptions. Again, you start
- 40:58Speaker 1: to figure out who's going to be part of the
- 41:00Speaker 1: future going forward, but you also don't win the game.
- 41:02Speaker 1: You don't win the game. And do you really, like
- 41:04Speaker 1: when you get to April, would be beating the Bengals
- 41:09Speaker 1: in this situation at a time you likely aren't going
- 41:12Speaker 1: to make the playoffs? You aren't going to win anything
- 41:14Speaker 1: at the end of this season. You're going to want
- 41:16Speaker 1: those draft picks to be as high as they possibly can.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Is it going to make a difference in this game?
- 41:21Speaker 1: And I don't think it is. So I think this
- 41:24Speaker 1: is a win-win for both teams. Cincinnati offensively gets going.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Tee Higgins is having a fantastic season, and that continues.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Ten catches, 155 yards, and two touchdowns. He's making it
- 41:34Speaker 1: look really easy. Obviously, we all know what Jamar Chase
- 41:37Speaker 1: is to this team and what he continues to be.
- 41:40Speaker 1: He played a good game. 11 catches for 141 yards
- 41:44Speaker 1: and one touchdown. Mike Jacecki, four catches for 76 yards
- 41:48Speaker 1: and a touchdown. This offense, with all these weapons, can
- 41:51Speaker 1: be as explosive as anybody in the National Football League,
- 41:54Speaker 1: but they have to get timely stops on defense. And
- 41:57Speaker 1: they found a way to get some here and there,
- 41:59Speaker 1: and again, that safety was pivotal.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Let's take it to L.A., where the Rams took on
- 42:05Speaker 2: the Chargers, and the Chargers 0-6 coming into this week,
- 42:10Speaker 2: fresh off the bye. Some thought, hey, maybe they can
- 42:14Speaker 2: get hot off the bye. No, that is not the
- 42:16Speaker 2: case at all.
- 42:17Speaker 1: 0-7.
- 42:18Speaker 2: This team looks lifeless after getting beat up by the
- 42:21Speaker 2: Rams 24-9. And Justin Herbert threw two picks in this game.
- 42:26Speaker 2: The Rams, however, much needed victory here. Richard, where do
- 42:32Speaker 2: you even want to start with this game? The Chargers,
- 42:35Speaker 2: it just keeps going from bad to worse to worse.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I don't even know if they warrant our time at
- 42:41Speaker 2: this point. The Rams improved to 4-4. How competitive do
- 42:45Speaker 2: you really think they can be in this NFC West?
- 42:49Speaker 1: Well, they're a really talented team. And as they continue
- 42:51Speaker 1: to get healthy, the Rams will continue to be a
- 42:54Speaker 1: threat in this NFC West. They're a team that nobody's
- 42:58Speaker 1: going to want to play come January. Nobody wants them
- 43:00Speaker 1: to be the seventh seed. And then you've earned, you know,
- 43:03Speaker 1: fought hard all season long to earn yourself a two
- 43:06Speaker 1: seed only to see a healthy LA Rams team with
- 43:09Speaker 1: Myles Garrett. And by that point, I think Aaron Donald
- 43:13Speaker 1: will be in rare form in Matthew Stafford, and they'll
- 43:17Speaker 1: likely have Devontae Adams and everybody in that team at
- 43:20Speaker 1: full strength. McDuffie, Puna Ford, all those guys coming back
- 43:24Speaker 1: into the fold. Colby Turner, I think they're going to
- 43:27Speaker 1: be a tough team to deal with. This Chargers team
- 43:29Speaker 1: is in free fall, though. Nine points in this game. Again,
- 43:32Speaker 1: Justin Herbert, two interceptions, only sacked twice. He was moving around. Again,
- 43:38Speaker 1: the offensive line isn't doing a great job, but these
- 43:40Speaker 1: Justin Herbert truthers would tell me everybody's playing well, but
- 43:43Speaker 1: Justin Herbert, no, everybody's just playing bad, including Justin Herbert.
- 43:47Speaker 1: He's just the highest paid guy on the team and
- 43:49Speaker 1: playing quarterback for this team. So he's going to bear
- 43:52Speaker 1: a lot of the blame. Jim Harbaugh is going to
- 43:54Speaker 1: bear some of it, but everybody's pointing that Mike McDaniel
- 43:58Speaker 1: as if he's the issue and he wasn't the issue
- 44:01Speaker 1: before when in his other stops, I guess maybe in Miami,
- 44:04Speaker 1: but at times in Miami, the offense was thriving in
- 44:07Speaker 1: San Francisco. The offense was thriving. This offense hasn't shown
- 44:10Speaker 1: any signs that it's going to get rolling at any
- 44:13Speaker 1: point in time. This running back situation has seemed dire.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Omarion Hampton has taken multiple steps back. Kamani Vidal. I mean,
- 44:23Speaker 1: none of these running backs look like they're the guy
- 44:26Speaker 1: within this scheme. And maybe it's the scheme. Maybe it's
- 44:28Speaker 1: the offensive line. Maybe it's not the greatest fit. And
- 44:31Speaker 1: you may need to go back to a gap scheme
- 44:32Speaker 1: or something. Switch it up. but they've got to figure
- 44:36Speaker 1: something out. They've got to figure out the future. They're
- 44:37Speaker 1: the only winless team in the National Football League left
- 44:40Speaker 1: there in prime draft position at one right now, and
- 44:45Speaker 1: if they don't change something, this is what it's going
- 44:47Speaker 1: to be.
- 44:49Speaker 2: The Rams, on the other hand, are making do with
- 44:51Speaker 2: what they have on the field. They've got a two-headed
- 44:53Speaker 2: monster developing in Blake Corum and Kyron Williams. Corum totaled
- 44:57Speaker 2: the rock 11 times for 73 yards and a touchdown.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Kyron added 16 carries and 56 yards and a touchdown.
- 45:03Speaker 2: And then you got the always trustworthy Puka Nakua, 11
- 45:06Speaker 2: for 80 in a touchdown. Don't let the Rams get hot.
- 45:09Speaker 2: That is my caution to the league. Because like you said, Richard,
- 45:12Speaker 2: if this team can squeeze into the playoffs and be
- 45:14Speaker 2: a 6-7 seed, no one is going to want to
- 45:16Speaker 2: face them.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Let's take it to... But one thing I do want
- 45:21Speaker 1: to say, I am concerned a little bit about Matthew
- 45:23Speaker 1: Stafford and his lack of real big game production. This
- 45:27Speaker 1: defense from the Chargers is pretty solid, but they're not
- 45:30Speaker 1: world breeders. And obviously... They haven't won a game this season.
- 45:33Speaker 1: He was only 17-25 for 157 yards, a touchdown, and
- 45:37Speaker 1: an interception. That's un-Matthew Stafford-like, and obviously they're missing some pieces,
- 45:42Speaker 1: and he's got to protect himself, but that's something to
- 45:47Speaker 1: keep an eye on.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Let's take it to Miami. The New England Patriots went
- 45:50Speaker 2: on the road and ultimately squeezed out a 24-19 win.
- 45:56Speaker 1: New England looked like they weren't.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Ready to play at the beginning of this game. Dolphins
- 46:00Speaker 2: raced out to a multi-score lead. and ultimately lost grasp
- 46:04Speaker 2: of it in the second half. Drake May, 199 yards,
- 46:08Speaker 2: two touchdown passes, added another one on the ground. This
- 46:12Speaker 2: New England Patriots team is interesting because they were once
- 46:15Speaker 2: in my power ranks as my fifth seed. They lose
- 46:17Speaker 2: to the Bears, and then they struggle on the road
- 46:19Speaker 2: against the Dolphins.
- 46:21Speaker 1: What do you make of New England? Are they a
- 46:23Speaker 1: true contender in the AFC? Well, I don't know if
- 46:26Speaker 1: I'm ready to put them a true contender. status they
- 46:29Speaker 1: did beat the buffalo bills within their own division that's
- 46:31Speaker 1: buffalo's only loss this season so you have to take
- 46:34Speaker 1: that into consideration but games like this make you you
- 46:37Speaker 1: know kind of take a pause before you really put
- 46:39Speaker 1: them in contender consideration this dolphins team is probably the
- 46:43Speaker 1: least talented team in the national football league because of
- 46:46Speaker 1: how they've purged everything but you know they're in uh
- 46:49Speaker 1: salary cap hell right now they're in dead cap hell
- 46:52Speaker 1: and Jeff Halfley's just trying to survive the season, figure
- 46:56Speaker 1: out who's the winner, figure out who's going to make
- 46:57Speaker 1: it to next season, who his team's going to be
- 47:00Speaker 1: when they draft their quarterback of the future and start
- 47:03Speaker 1: to rebuild this team back up and maybe pick up
- 47:07Speaker 1: some free agents, obviously. So for them to struggle with
- 47:10Speaker 1: them the way they did was kind of concerning. But,
- 47:13Speaker 1: you know, we'll see. They're a kind of wait-and-see team.
- 47:17Speaker 1: They struggle defensively, which was surprising because I think of
- 47:21Speaker 1: them as a defensive team these days. But Drake May
- 47:24Speaker 1: continues to push the ball down the field. Demario Douglas
- 47:27Speaker 1: had a big catch in this game. Kyle Williams had
- 47:29Speaker 1: a big catch in this game. And Ramondre Stevens kind
- 47:32Speaker 1: of steadies the ship with the run game. Drake May
- 47:35Speaker 1: didn't turn the ball over. So that's, you know, he
- 47:36Speaker 1: didn't throw an interception. That's always a positive sign for
- 47:39Speaker 1: this team. But I don't take a ton out of this.
- 47:42Speaker 1: You know, I think, again, this is one of those
- 47:44Speaker 1: results where both teams kind of show that, hey, they
- 47:47Speaker 1: can battle. The Dolphins show, hey, they're showing signs of life.
- 47:50Speaker 1: They're not just turning over and giving up. but they
- 47:53Speaker 1: also want to draft high in the draft next year
- 47:56Speaker 1: to rebuild the team.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Well, Richard, the answer for the New England Patriots, whether
- 48:00Speaker 2: they're contenders or not, is going to get answered here
- 48:02Speaker 2: pretty soon. They've got a gauntlet of a schedule coming up,
- 48:05Speaker 2: hosting the Packers next week, then playing against the Detroit
- 48:08Speaker 2: Lions in Germany, lay up against the LA Chargers, then
- 48:12Speaker 2: the Bills, Vikings, and Chiefs. Five of those six games, toss-ups.
- 48:17Speaker 2: We shall see how New England responds. It's time for
- 48:21Speaker 2: Fresh from the Oven Takes brought to you by DiGiorno.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Just like pizza fresh out of the oven, these takes
- 48:28Speaker 2: are hot, fresh, and ready for Monday night. Let's break
- 48:31Speaker 2: down the matchup between Seattle and the Bears. Richard, what's
- 48:35Speaker 2: your hottest take coming into this Monday night matchup between
- 48:38Speaker 2: Seattle and Chicago?
- 48:41Speaker 1: I think my hottest take is that this Seahawks defense
- 48:44Speaker 1: is going to hold this Chicago Bears offense under 17.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I know people are going to look at me crazy. Oh,
- 48:49Speaker 1: this is Caleb Williams. This is Run game is outstanding.
- 48:52Speaker 1: These receivers have done Luther Bird and Roma Dunce. And
- 48:55Speaker 1: then let's not forget about Loveland and these tight ends.
- 48:58Speaker 1: But the Seattle Seahawks defense has been playing fantastic all
- 49:01Speaker 1: season long. They're, you know, rolling into form. And I
- 49:06Speaker 1: think they have their best game of the season in
- 49:08Speaker 1: this Monday night football matchup. I think they play best
- 49:13Speaker 1: in prime time. Their offense will run the ball better
- 49:15Speaker 1: than they have in the past. I think Quentin Nelson,
- 49:18Speaker 1: I know this is his first game. He'll have a
- 49:21Speaker 1: great immediate impact in this game. I'm sure they'll run
- 49:24Speaker 1: behind him. And I think they win this game comfortably.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Seattle's defense certainly has a way of humbling elite offense,
- 49:31Speaker 2: as we saw last week against Kansas City Chiefs. Which
- 49:35Speaker 2: player do you think will be the deciding factor in
- 49:38Speaker 2: this one?
- 49:42Speaker 1: What player? I can't think of a player in particular.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I think it's going to be the trenches, though. I
- 49:48Speaker 1: think it's going to happen in the trenches. The Chicago
- 49:50Speaker 1: Bears offensive line, which is one of the best in
- 49:52Speaker 1: the National Football League, against Seattle's defensive line, which is
- 49:55Speaker 1: one of the best in the National Football League. I
- 49:57Speaker 1: think that's going to be power on power, big on big,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and I think that that's going to be the determining
- 50:03Speaker 1: factor in this game, and I got Seattle.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Well, Chicago certainly has taken that to heart, adding Jeffrey
- 50:10Speaker 2: Simmons to those trenches. What is the final score? Obviously,
- 50:13Speaker 2: you've got Seattle. You've got Chicago going under 17 points.
- 50:17Speaker 2: How big of a win are we talking about here
- 50:18Speaker 2: for Seattle?
- 50:20Speaker 1: I got Seattle winning this one 24-16.
- 50:24Speaker 2: And obviously, when you're sitting down on Monday night, Richard,
- 50:26Speaker 2: I'm assuming you're enjoying a pizza. I've tried to talk
- 50:29Speaker 2: you in the last three weeks to adding pineapple to
- 50:33Speaker 2: your pizza. Have I convinced you yet? What topping are
- 50:36Speaker 2: you putting on your DiGiorno pizza come Monday night?
- 50:39Speaker 1: It's definitely not going to be a fruit. That's for sure, Mitchell.
- 50:42Speaker 1: It's going to be pepperoni. I'm sorry, people. You guys,
- 50:45Speaker 1: I'm a creature of habit. I'm going to be eating
- 50:47Speaker 1: pepperoni pizza, maybe a little Parmesan cheese, maybe sprinkle a
- 50:51Speaker 1: little garlic powder on there just to spice it up
