- 2:38Buy heavy duty RPM motor oil at any independent Chevron gas station or standard station
- 2:44where they say ant mean we take better care of your car. And now
- 3:04Tonight's story, Seed of Destruction, the transcribed adventure of George Valentine. Dear
- 3:15mister Valentine, the name Dan Creton must be familiar to you. Anyone who's
- 3:22read a newspaper turned on the radio in the last three weeks must react to
- 3:25it out of morbid curiosity of nothing else. Well, I'm missus Dan Creyton,
- 3:31and the mystery of my husband's disappearance is something that I just can't stand
- 3:35any longer. I can't sleep to life. I hate the sound of the
- 3:38door bell for fear that it's the police. That the reports again, and
- 3:42yet I wish to answer it because it might be some news of him,
- 3:46good news that's bad. I almost think at this point of even bad news
- 3:50would be better than none. Mister Valentine, I'm through waiting. I want
- 3:54you to help me. I'll pay you well, and believe me, the
- 3:59case is challenge enough for anyone, So please come right away, anxiously,
- 4:03yours Ednaty Creton. Of course I know some of the details, Missus Creton,
- 4:19from the newspapers, so I want you to forget them, all of
- 4:21them. Why all of them? I want you to start with only one
- 4:26fact, mister Valentine. I has been vanished into thin air, without reason,
- 4:30without leaving a single clue. Do you really believe that's possible, Missus
- 4:34Cretin. But when you and mister Valentine start checking for yourself with Miss Brooks,
- 4:39I think you will be convinced it can be and there isn't much point
- 4:42and are even tackling it? Is there? Oh? But there is well.
- 4:46For one thing, I know you and your reputation, mister Valentine,
- 4:49you couldn't resist a puzzler like this. As you try to point number two,
- 4:56there's always the seed of destruction. I beg your pardon. It's part
- 5:00of a German proverb that my grandmother used to quote to me when I was
- 5:03a child, in provert seed. The destruction is within all of us,
- 5:10and give it room to grow, and nothing can stop it. That's a
- 5:14cheerful thought because a matter of fact, it is because it will destroy that
- 5:17criminal. And you're sure there's a criminal involved in Missus Crayton. Dan didn't
- 5:21leave me of his own accord, He didn't something happen to it. And
- 5:26all I start with is the picture of mister Crayton is that it's the one
- 5:30that I always liked. This he he's a very good looking man. See
- 5:33that's so strange. Why shouldn't he be? Well? I well, I
- 5:35just I was a very handsome young lady when we were married. Believe it
- 5:40or not. Oh, I'm sorry, but I've just been under terrible pressure.
- 5:45I understand. You will try and find mister Crayton, won't you,
- 5:48mister Valentine, Yes, yes, Missus Crayton, And I'll respect your wish.
- 5:55I'll check every step of this case for myself, taking nothing for granted,
- 6:00not even anything you said to me. Right, quite right, And
- 6:03it's a Valentine. No Valentine. No, nobody's timing can be that perfect.
- 6:16It can't be. Okay Johnson, Okay, it's too early in the
- 6:20year to make a bid for an oscar. Yeah, that's what Johnson for
- 6:23bothering you for three weeks. I'm safe on the sidelines out of raach of
- 6:28fire and book fats. Then today today the commissioner hands me and homicide the
- 6:32Creighton case because missing persons can't do anything and the papers are writing them and
- 6:36begin I get hired by missus Crayton. Why that should be cause for celebration,
- 6:42Johnson? You know, shoulder the shoulder, Two heads are better than
- 6:45one, all that sort of thing. God better see George the good lieutenant
- 6:48normally again. All right, seriously, Johnson, what are the facts?
- 6:53Simple hard facts? There and few Craton and his wife's brothers Tan Collins on
- 6:59a bunch of small movie houses in this section of the country. Crayton was
- 7:02visiting one of their theaters and Ridgely planes when he got a call from a
- 7:08party or parties on loan walked out to meet him or whether her, with
- 7:14a big havit grin on his face. Was never seen again. The phone
- 7:19call was definitely from a woman. Huh. Papers didn't have that. Papers
- 7:24don't know everything so far one hundred of those, but not a good solid
- 7:28one on the bunch. So homicide gets called in and it's gonna be a
- 7:32big headache. If Dan Crayton's been dead for three weeks, where's the body?
- 7:38The boys are missing. Persons are smart. They looked high and low,
- 7:42found nothing. Yeah, Valentine, you know that getting rid of a
- 7:46body is about the hardest job there is the whole world. Not to be
- 7:50obvious, a murderer could have varied for mister Crayton. Ridgely Plains is a
- 7:56highly choice suburb. Every inter ground is carefully cultivated. No one has been
- 8:01seen doing any extra correcular digging. Oh well, Johnson, good luck to
- 8:05you on your future search and Ridgley Plains, we'll probably see you there sometime
- 8:09sometimes sometime. Do you have anything more important to do? As a matter
- 8:13of fact, I have. I promised missus Crachton to take no shortcuts,
- 8:18but check every step of the case myself. How long we're seeing dead.
- 8:31He gave me a skill, mister Valentine, I simply said, that's one
- 8:35assumption. The police must make mister Collins. Yes, yes, I suppose
- 8:39so it would be a terrible shocked with and she killed her whole life around.
- 8:43Then you've noticed that how much miss Books. Yes I have, mister
- 8:48Collins, I understand that you and mister Crayton have been having some differences of
- 8:52opinion lately, at least about the way the future of this business should be
- 8:56run. I gather that you've snooped around here enough to get that information.
- 9:00While in my business this kind of snooping is sort of glorified by the name
- 9:03detective work, I guess, so I'm sorry. Besides, your sister did
- 9:07want mister Valentine to take nothing for granted in this case check everything for himself.
- 9:11Well, actually, I suppose I'm the more daring partner in this team.
- 9:16You see, there are things I want to do that Dan was holding
- 9:20back on, things that would take a great deal of the firm's money.
- 9:24Yes, go on, please, Well, on this last trip around,
- 9:28Dan has been taking as much money away from the different theaters as what's peasable.
- 9:33Usually it had been forwarded here to the office, but I presume Dan
- 9:35was sort of making sure I wouldn't get my hands on it. To do
- 9:39anything impulsive. I see. Then by the time mister Creighton had gotten around
- 9:43to originally plains, he had quite a lot of money with him. Yes,
- 9:46that's right. Or was this gathering up of the money purely one side
- 9:50of mister Collins? After all, since you were I'm afraid I didn't realize
- 9:54what Dan was doing until very late. I did beat into the punch at
- 9:58the last place, however, Ridgley playing, Yes, miss Books, I
- 10:03was there the day before Dan king and disappeared. Or the police know all
- 10:09about that. I've been thoroughly checked and given a clean bill of health.
- 10:11Still to be brutally frying, mister Collins, you would benefit in a business
- 10:16sense if anything happened to mister Craigon. To be brutally honest, mister Valentine,
- 10:22I'd benefit greatly. But I wouldn't look for the seed of destruction in
- 10:28me. Oh so you know about that? After all, Edmund and I
- 10:31heard the same proverb from the same grandmother. Tell me, mister Colin,
- 10:35how did mister Craton get a pound of those different movie? Has it?
- 10:39Or his secretary Paul Door always drove him? Nice young man? Oh well,
- 10:43I wonder if mister Door would have time to drive us to Risney Plains.
- 10:48Mister Collen, Why, yes, yes, I am sure he would.
- 10:50You see, mister Valentine, the truth of the matter is I am
- 10:54anxious for you to find my brother in law, Ralph Holder, the manager
- 10:58of our theater. There. He too, every think he can to help
- 11:00you. Mister Creton was standing just about here in the lobby when the phone
- 11:11call came. Isn't that right, mister Holden. That's right, mister Dor
- 11:15It was just before noon. Theater wasn't over here, yes, said yes,
- 11:18sir, it was about the same time as right now, And as
- 11:22I get it, and Usher answered the phone and then told mister Crayton it
- 11:26was for him. That's exactly what happened, mister Valentine. The usher Joe
- 11:28is around somewhere. I'll get him boy, Thanks mister Holding. Mister Door,
- 11:33yes, ma'am, trictly off the record, do you have any idea
- 11:35who the lady on the phone might have been? Whose? I understand that
- 11:37you and mister Craton have made periodic trips. He had originally plain I wouldn't
- 11:43know anything about mister Crayton's personal life or his friends. Would you venture a
- 11:48general opinion. Oh, of course, sir, would you call mister Crayton
- 11:52to kind of phrase a gay dog? I wouldn't say so. This is
- 11:58Joe, Ritchie, Miss Brooks and mister Valentine, and mister Valentine would like
- 12:03to ask a few questions Joe, Yeah, sure thing the lady who asked
- 12:07for mister Creton when you answered the phone, Hey, hey, sounded nice.
- 12:11You have no idea who she was. It's a funny thing. Voice
- 12:13sounded familiar, sort of. I can't say I recognized. That's too bad.
- 12:18Of course she didn't say very much just after talk to mister Craton.
- 12:22Hey, but from her voice, I bet that they would be a lot
- 12:26of fun. Mistery Oh sorry, mister well knowing mister Craton, I I
- 12:33mean, aren't you Oh are you going to say nothing? Unaccepted? He
- 12:39always got around. If you know what I mean, you're making it very
- 12:41clear, sonny. Mister Crayton was a very friendly man, and sometimes he
- 12:46would get lonely. But a night before he sure made a play for Miss
- 12:50Parton, Miss Barton, I Cashier, a lovely young lady. I'm sure
- 12:52mister Craton was being just friendly. I know anything else you want to know,
- 12:58Miss Valentine. No, no, thanks, You're welcome. Anything else
- 13:03we can do. Did mister Creton say anything after the conversation with a mysterious
- 13:07lady? Yes, he told me to go on back to the city.
- 13:11He joined me there later, did you yes, of course. Now it
- 13:16took you less than an hour to drive us out here, for he didn't
- 13:18get back to the city until four that afternoon. I checked, Oh well.
- 13:26As a matter of fact, I didn't go right back. I spent
- 13:31a couple of hours with a friend here, friend a girl, a lady.
- 13:35Yes, she has nothing to do with any of this. There's no
- 13:39appointment mentioning her name, I won't, all right, we were just curious.
- 13:43And you, mister Holder, what did you do after mister Creton left
- 13:46for his mysterious appointment? I went home for lunch. It's only a couple
- 13:52of blocks. I always go home for lunch at one o'clock a lot.
- 13:54I checked, Yes, that's right. Did you see my wife was leaving
- 13:58tom the next day and had some shopping to do, so I went earlier.
- 14:01I see your wife's been gone ever since, is that right? Mister
- 14:05Holding? Visiting her family any time you would like me to drive you back
- 14:09to the city. Mister Varden, I'll ask you, Paul, Thanks,
- 14:13thanks very much. Go out with mister Creton. No, sir, not
- 14:26this little girl. I was just curious, Miss Pardon. I turned him
- 14:31down flat, and I was with my roommate all the following day, so
- 14:33I didn't see him at all. I know that I was just curious to
- 14:37get your opinion of mister Cratmen. More than anything else. He was a
- 14:41wolf, mister the most dangerous kind. Oh, it isn't that I'm afraid
- 14:46of anybody. And if if a nice man would have asked me to go
- 14:50out, I'd be only two flats. You've been a great health, Miss
- 14:54Pardon. Goodbye, George. There's no question about missus Holder livingtown the day
- 15:07after mister Crayton disappear everything. Yes, she's been making plans to go to
- 15:11Chicago for quite some time, talked about them to the neighbors. Mister Holder
- 15:16bought her a ticket, drove her to the station. What do the neighbors
- 15:18say she looked like? Well, they say she was very pretty, younger
- 15:22than mister Holder, liked better things than he could get her on his story.
- 15:24Good work. See, I think we ought to see if we can
- 15:28find Lieutenant Johnson around anyway. It could very well be at Valentine. Crayton
- 15:39had a lot of money, he had an eye for a pretty woman.
- 15:43He and missus Older probably ended up somewhere in South America to save themselves the
- 15:48trouble of getting doll we say to divorce. Well, there's up that way,
- 15:54doesn't it. And I'm sorry for mister Holder too, And I wonder
- 15:58we couldn't find anybody will a tie in law. I told you the hardest
- 16:02thing in the world is to get rid of a body. Now, Johnson,
- 16:07you're wrong to get rid of two bodies with the even higher We'll return
- 16:21to tonight's adventure of George Valentine in just a moment. Another wants to have
- 16:25tire trouble at any time, and yet it always seems to happen just at
- 16:29the time when you least expect it. You can help to avoid this aggravating
- 16:33situation by having your tires checked and inspected regularly by the car savers at independent

- 17:15a better deal anywhere than that offered now by your car saver. So drive
- 17:21in tomorrow and get complete details on the new low prices on Atlas tires and
- 17:25tubes at any standard station or independent Chevern gas station where they say and mean
- 17:32we take better care of your car. A susceptible and wealthy married man,
- 17:45Dan Crechton disappears mysteriously after receiving a phone call from a lady, and so
- 17:49you're hired by Missus Crachton to try and find him. How you get to
- 17:53work and dig up enough evidence to give you a logical answer, Crayton ran
- 17:57away with someone else who is training at marital ties. Missus Holder, the
- 18:03wife of the manager one of the movie theaters owned by Creton. So there
- 18:06it is, case solved. If your name is George Valentine, you seem
- 18:11to have reservations about accepting your own answer to the mystery, and the only
- 18:15one who really shares your doubts is Missus Craton. I had to come here
- 18:22to originally, plains mister Valentine, I just had to top two the christ.
- 18:25Missus Craig. You're upsetting yourself, Edna, Oh, you're very worried
- 18:29about me, my dear brother, But you wouldn't accept that lie about Dan
- 18:32and that that Holder woman. I know your pride has hurt Edna, abrupt
- 18:36the evidence, look at the evidence. Only a trusting soul like Ralph Holder
- 18:40wouldn't think anything wrong about not getting any letters from his wife. Now it
- 18:42turns out she never even wants your folk. Dan would never leave me like
- 18:45that, yes, said mister Valentine. Yes, mister, I want you
- 18:51to go right on working on this case. Dan and I will stay here
- 18:52at the hotel. And I want you to remember what I said about the
- 18:56speed of destruction that lies deep within ey criminal. I remember there was foul
- 19:02play and the criminal will give himself away. He must. You're a very
- 19:06optimistic woman, Missus Crayton. But I'll just I can, Okay, mister
- 19:18jar, mister Valentine's here. What's in your mind? Well, I I
- 19:23feel I must tell you the name of the woman I spent that afternoon with,
- 19:26mister Valentine. Okay, it wasn't Missus Holder, the fem fatale of
- 19:32Ridgley playing Keep Talking, Paul. I had a date with her. I
- 19:37picked her up after mister Holder had his lunch and went back to the theater.
- 19:41We rode around, stopped for a drink, and on a little cabin.
- 19:45The Holders have not far from here. Nice girl kept her date with
- 19:48the kid here mat Crayton, somewhere in Chicago. The next day. I
- 19:55wonder the cartoon is on now, mister Valentine. We can talk here in
- 20:07the lobby. The Mickey mouse always goes over big here, so I'm here.
- 20:15It's the hold. There was there any special reason for your wise trip
- 20:18to Chicago? Reason? Well, I you can be honest with me.
- 20:21I'm trying to get at the truth. It's hard to know what truth is,
- 20:25isn't it. I thought Dotty really liked me. Maybe she didn't love
- 20:29me, but I thought she liked me. I'm sure she didn't. No,
- 20:32she didn't. Oh, she wasn't bad, but she liked to flur.
- 20:37I thought a visit to her folks would do her good. Maybe she'd
- 20:40miss me a little and things would be different between us. Do you'll think
- 20:44she and mister Crayton ran away together? I don't know what to think.
- 20:47God, oh, my kid, myself as the Valentine. Sure they ran
- 20:52away together? Oh sure, God, big here, mickey nose. I
- 21:06don't know what to expect to find here in missus Holder's room, George.
- 21:07Maybe nothing, Just curious about how she lived. Yes, well, I
- 21:11had a job getting permission for the chief here. After all, we're pretty
- 21:15sure now no crime has been committed, But Johnson, there are too many
- 21:19loose threads, like Stanley Collins's pretty good motive for killing Crayton. Now,
- 21:25look care, Valentine, not making accusations. I'm just thinking out a lot.
- 21:29Certainly enough pictures of Daddy Holder around. She liked her, so Missus
- 21:33Crayton isn't fooling anyone with all his talk of her husband's loyalty. She knew
- 21:37him for what he was for a long time Valentine stopped making a mystery of
- 21:41everything. This would be Doddie's closet. I suppose brilliant de Dutch and not
- 21:48much left him here A couple of old dresses. She probably didn't think we're
- 21:53worth taking. We're wasting our time. Look, valent missus Johnson is expecting
- 22:00me home for dead. Huh it's funny. He shoes look grand news.
- 22:06Yeah so what so why didn't Dottie take them along? Un she probably bought
- 22:11them for this trip. Just a minute, now, what are you looking
- 22:17for? M not here? They aren't here at all, George, If
- 22:22you don't stop acting so mysteriouscuse me a minute, angel I gotta make a
- 22:26phone. Yes, but George most the number of the movie house again.
- 22:30Oh hear. Why do you expect Holder to tell you just what missus Holder
- 22:41took with her? No man ever pays enough attention to know. Maybe,
- 22:44but I hell on man speaking. Oh it's you Holder, No, nothing
- 22:49really new. I was just wondering if you know what missus Holder took with
- 22:53her in the way of clothes. Uh huh, I see, Oh her
- 23:00brother has a clothing storm, she called her. Oh yes, it's just
- 23:04that we found a brand new pair of shoes and Missus Holder's closet, and
- 23:08we were wondering why she didn't take them. Yeah, I guess so forgot.
- 23:14I mean maybe all right, thanks mister, Well what do you think
- 23:21you are a complied? She took only a couple of handbags, a few
- 23:23dresses. I'm under things, some toilet articles, that's all. Her brother
- 23:27has a clothing store. She was gonna get a lot of new things there.
- 23:30Okay, okay, So what do we do now? Wow, we
- 23:33wait a little while for the seed of destruction to begin to sprout. Then
- 23:37we go to work. George, I don't think there's anybody around here at
- 23:59all. Oh I don't, hubious sine Angel lost the good lieutenant to the
- 24:03law of Missus Johnson's famous corn beef and carriage. I don't know. Oh
- 24:07I am the true blue tat George I picked out, even though I don't
- 24:10know why. No lights in the house, no car anywhere wrong, just
- 24:15as I said, no nothing, Oh let's see. No, you might
- 24:18as well sit out here on the board changing what are you going to do?
- 24:22Look around for signs of freshly dug earth. Oh oh, maybe I
- 24:29will just sit here I'll be back after a while. Oh great, well,
- 24:34I think I can have a cigarette. Relax a little, Oh,
- 24:38my seahirt, I wouldn't bother to sit down quiet. Please, I wouldn't
- 24:45want to kill you just yet, but I will if you'll force me to.
- 24:48Oh, I never argue with anybody worth a gun. Never please go
- 24:52inside. No, no, we won't put on any lights. We'll just
- 25:03sit here in the dark and wait, wait for what for mister Valentine to
- 25:07come back? But why you mustn't think I'm a fool, miss Brooks.
- 25:11I know mister Valentine suspects me. Ever since he mentioned that pair of shoes.
- 25:15I knew i'd have to kill him, both of you. I don't
- 25:19know what you're talking about. You'll find the place where ground was freshly dug
- 25:23find it sooner or later. My own place was the only one where I
- 25:27could work safely, wasn't it You killed book, mister Crickton and your wife.
- 25:33I killed him first. I knew he had all that money. I
- 25:37saw him flirt with the cashier, and I knew he'd been watching Dotty,
- 25:41so I made her call him at the theater, came over to the house.
- 25:45I killed him if you wipe. I hated her. I knew I
- 25:48could never trust her, so I had to protect myself, didn't I He'd
- 25:55already made plans for her to go to Chicago. Everybody knew it. So
- 25:59I took her here, and she didn't even like me anymore. I had
- 26:04to kill her. What are you gonna do now? In a minute,
- 26:10I'll open the door and let mister Valentine end. I must protect myself against
- 26:15everybody. I have money. Now I need time. Come on with me,
- 26:21Miss Brooks to the door. Mister coldie, you can't go on chilling.
- 26:25I don't say such an impatient young man, Mister Valentine, I'm coming.
- 26:29I see George. I've gone now, I said, drowning. That's
- 26:34a nice boy. I'll kill you. I'll kill you. Just go along
