- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, welcome to Inside the Data on Inside the Birds.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher and we got Sam Finkel, our data expert,
- 0:16Speaker 1: to ring in the new year with some really fascinating
- 0:20Speaker 1: and exciting data on the Eagles offense. Just kidding, just kidding. Well, well, yeah,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we talk about the defense and get people excited. The
- 0:27Speaker 1: offense maybe not so much. But before we start, Sam,
- 0:30Speaker 1: hope you had a wonderful new year. Hope all of
- 0:32Speaker 1: our listeners and people who have been with this show
- 0:35Speaker 1: all year long also had a great new year.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I was with you until you said offense.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I know, I know, I know. What
- 0:45Speaker 1: did you seek to find out when doing Inside the
- 0:49Speaker 1: Data versus this thirteen to twelve win over the Bills?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I just kind of looked for explanations
- 0:56Speaker 2: because this game was a thrilling game where it didn't
- 1:03Speaker 2: necessarily need to be a thrilling game in some regards.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Some elite defensive play all around, and you know, the offense. Okay,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'll put it this way. We're going to be broken records,
- 1:17Speaker 2: but we're also going to talk about some broken records.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You know, it's nice to be a.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Little profound with that, but let's let's get into it.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We'll just see what my thought process as we go.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So just to show you how we're sometimes on the
- 1:29Speaker 1: same page without communicating. Before I put up the charts.
- 1:32Speaker 1: The one I guess real chart I was looking forward
- 1:36Speaker 1: to seeing coming out of this game was the peak
- 1:39Speaker 1: win percentage one that you've introduced going into you know,
- 1:42Speaker 1: a few weeks ago, because this was a game where
- 1:44Speaker 1: you felt like it was going to heavily favor one
- 1:47Speaker 1: team and then the other and then the other, right,
- 1:49Speaker 1: So I was curious to see how it came together,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and I think you actually led off the charts this
- 1:56Speaker 1: week with it. So we we sometimes think with one
- 1:59Speaker 1: same brain, which is kind of scary, Sam, but that
- 2:02Speaker 1: is good.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Carrying one brain cell between the two of us.
- 2:05Speaker 1: All it's like a bad movie, like The Matrix or
- 2:07Speaker 1: something like that. I don't know, we're all living in it.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So yeah, let me get right to the charts and
- 2:13Speaker 1: away we'll go. All right, So here we go inside
- 2:22Speaker 1: the data week seventeen recap, and then you kind of
- 2:25Speaker 1: also threw in the score by quarter chart here too,
- 2:27Speaker 1: which also paints a picture. Those lines do not look similar, no.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And it's just very illustrative of basically what we saw
- 2:38Speaker 2: and everyone saw. You know, the Eagles took a commanding
- 2:42Speaker 2: lead early and then did nothing with it. The Bills
- 2:45Speaker 2: were stagnant and then at the end shot up and
- 2:48Speaker 2: you know they almost reached the Eagles at the end.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But hey, everyone will take it.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, there's gotta be some funny name for
- 2:55Speaker 1: this kind of line graph, right for especially the Bills, who,
- 2:59Speaker 1: as the chart shows to that, not to show up
- 3:00Speaker 1: for the first forty five minutes of the game. I mean,
- 3:04Speaker 1: credit to the egos defense. I don't want to take
- 3:06Speaker 1: anything away, but you know, it's just funny to see that.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm not great at math, but and
- 3:11Speaker 1: the protractor that would be like, would that be like
- 3:13Speaker 1: a one hundred and twenty degree angles? No, what would
- 3:17Speaker 1: that be that that Bill's line there?
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm not The right angle would be ninety degrees and
- 3:23Speaker 1: that would be a total corner. And now it's leaning
- 3:26Speaker 1: the other way. So if I got that one right,
- 3:28Speaker 1: if anybody could validate listening, if that's about a one
- 3:31Speaker 1: twenty degree angle, then I'm impressed with myself.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Well, I mean they say in school, you're either good
- 3:35Speaker 2: at like algebra or geometry, and I was never good
- 3:37Speaker 2: at geometry.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Well what's the saying. If you're good at none of.
- 3:41Speaker 2: That, Yeah, then you are a journalist and.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You're a sports exactly all right, here we go peak
- 3:49Speaker 1: win percentage.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Look at that thing, man, Yeah, I mean I was
- 3:53Speaker 2: surprised that their highest win percentage was actually in the
- 3:57Speaker 2: first quarter for the Bills, right, sixty seven percent, when
- 4:01Speaker 2: it was zero zero after James Cook up the middle
- 4:05Speaker 2: for seven yards on the Philadelphia twenty three. It was
- 4:08Speaker 2: right before Josh Allen's fumble that was their highest win percentage.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Did you think that that was a forward pass? I
- 4:13Speaker 1: kind of thought it was.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You know, it could. The officiating was really bad, I felt,
- 4:19Speaker 2: and I feel like on both sides, it just which
- 4:22Speaker 2: you kind of hope evens out. I mean, all you
- 4:25Speaker 2: want is consistency. Right, If the officiating is bad, as
- 4:28Speaker 2: long as it's equally bad for both teams, you feel okay.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I thought it was, yes, but that officiating was particularly horrible.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I don't understand it.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Plus the way the Bills Josh Allen, the Bills we
- 4:40Speaker 1: reacted to it and they didn't even go after the
- 4:42Speaker 1: ball because they still clearly thought it was. So it
- 4:44Speaker 1: was almost a little bit of a gift there for
- 4:47Speaker 1: the Eagles because they were in credit to them, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: you played the whistle and they ran after it and
- 4:51Speaker 1: got it. But clearly the Bills thought that that was
- 4:53Speaker 1: a forward pass and had no reaction to it.
- 4:55Speaker 3: So yeah, So the Church shows that the Bills had
- 4:59Speaker 3: this high winning percentage in the first quarter and then
- 5:02Speaker 3: not again until I love this like final line on
- 5:06Speaker 3: the right side where it's like a precipitous drop there.
- 5:10Speaker 2: That was everyone's heart watching at the end. Actually very
- 5:15Speaker 2: much describes it. Interestingly, before we get to that, the
- 5:18Speaker 2: Eagles had an over a ninety percent win percentage I
- 5:21Speaker 2: think multiple times, and then they just kept dropping back,
- 5:25Speaker 2: dropping back right. It's pretty much anytime they got the
- 5:28Speaker 2: ball back and then three and out it went back
- 5:31Speaker 2: down that that was kind of the where they were at.
- 5:35Speaker 2: But after Josh Allen's second rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter,
- 5:39Speaker 2: the Bills had a fifty six percent win percentage crazy
- 5:44Speaker 2: thirteen twelve with eight seconds left in the game, and
- 5:47Speaker 2: that obviously is when the two point conversion happened, which,
- 5:50Speaker 2: to be honest with you, I don't think the Bills
- 5:53Speaker 2: made the breaks to cheat strategic call, uh in terms
- 5:57Speaker 2: of going for two, and the numbers say to absolutely
- 6:01Speaker 2: go for it there like the actual statistic. But the
- 6:04Speaker 2: problem is, you had momentum in the Eagles offense wasn't
- 6:07Speaker 2: moving at all. So I just I think in that situation,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you let it go to overtime and you just ride
- 6:14Speaker 2: the momentum.
- 6:15Speaker 1: You know, It's a tough call because I feel like
- 6:17Speaker 1: Sean was smart enough to realize that even when his
- 6:20Speaker 1: offense was moving, there were kind of shot plays that
- 6:23Speaker 1: were not moving the ball methodically and deliberately well. And
- 6:28Speaker 1: and then you go in overtime, you may have to
- 6:31Speaker 1: get a fuel goal right or match Obviously the touchdown.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Now they did have great they did have the Eagles
- 6:40Speaker 1: offense completely foiled. I agree with you on that, So
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think there's an argument to be made for both.
- 6:46Speaker 1: But I feel like Sean showed a lack of an
- 6:50Speaker 1: understandable lack of his team's ability to keep what they
- 6:54Speaker 1: had done in the fourth quarter going for another quarter
- 6:57Speaker 1: against an Eagles defense that very easily could have forced
- 7:00Speaker 1: Snoller turnover and made it easy for the off I
- 7:02Speaker 1: don't know. I think you have to think about a
- 7:03Speaker 1: lot of things right in ten seconds, and I'm sure
- 7:06Speaker 1: in his mind's like we got to win, and let's
- 7:07Speaker 1: go win it here, and they were unlikely to probably
- 7:10Speaker 1: to be able to win.
- 7:11Speaker 2: The division anyway, and then they almost got it, by
- 7:13Speaker 2: the way still.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and then actually they almost did right.
- 7:16Speaker 2: It probably should have had it, but definitely should have. Yeah.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Absolutely, But the most I think the thing about this
- 7:23Speaker 1: chart that is the most fascinating to me is like
- 7:25Speaker 1: in the upper right quadrant, the Eagles have like their
- 7:28Speaker 1: highest win percentage maybe an inch away from the finish
- 7:32Speaker 1: line right, and then their lowest is right within. It's
- 7:36Speaker 1: almost like within a minute and a half they went
- 7:37Speaker 1: from their highest to their lowest winning percentage.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very true.
- 7:41Speaker 1: That is amazing all right. By the numbers, I think
- 7:45Speaker 1: jump out to you here. I mean, if you would
- 7:46Speaker 1: have asked me what the numbers, the basic stats look
- 7:49Speaker 1: like after the game, I would say, well, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: Bill's probably had a lot more yards and a higher
- 7:54Speaker 1: average you know, obviously the you and more more time possession.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So I feel like this is pretty reflective of how
- 8:00Speaker 1: you know, there's nothing that sometimes catchs Sometimes they catch
- 8:02Speaker 1: our eye and we say that that seems odd.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, the the only thing that honestly
- 8:09Speaker 2: none of its surprises me. And there you can see
- 8:12Speaker 2: the officiating with the penalties. It's almost negligible the difference,
- 8:18Speaker 2: which is why nothing was highlighted there, right, But yeah,
- 8:21Speaker 2: nothing jumps out. It's kind of what you expect.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Maybe one thing, Sam that is green for the Bills,
- 8:26Speaker 1: which means good for them, meaning they won the category,
- 8:29Speaker 1: but not good for them would be their yards per
- 8:31Speaker 1: rush because there's such a and it's just like the Eagles.
- 8:34Speaker 1: They are a team that's highly dependent on running the
- 8:36Speaker 1: ball and they've unlike the Eagles, they have been running
- 8:39Speaker 1: the ball very well this year with James Cook and
- 8:42Speaker 1: Josh Allen, of course, and that's really their bread and butter.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So at three point six, sure, they beat the Eagles
- 8:48Speaker 1: three point two, but that's not a that's not a
- 8:50Speaker 1: hanger hat on kind of average for them.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah, no, not at all. I think both teams would
- 8:56Speaker 2: prefer those yards per rush to be at least closer
- 8:59Speaker 2: to four, if not up to five potentially, So definitely all.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Right, especially when the Bills are at home. Third down stats,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Oh boy, Sam, here we go again.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I opened the door to this when I started tracking it.
- 9:14Speaker 2: We got to keep it going here.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You did, so I don't think I would have thought
- 9:21Speaker 1: the Bills were six to fifteen. I did look at
- 9:23Speaker 1: that at the game, which is not great but not terrible.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But the Eagles at three for thirteen. The crazy part
- 9:30Speaker 1: is I didn't do the first half versus second half,
- 9:32Speaker 1: but I think they converted all three in the first half.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Obviously they did because they had no yard Yeah, yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 1: they did, so they must have been something like I
- 9:41Speaker 1: don't know, zero for six, seven, eight nine in the
- 9:43Speaker 1: second half.
- 9:44Speaker 2: That, yep, sounds about right.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The big thing is they were also what we've talked
- 9:48Speaker 1: about all year, a lot of those third downs were
- 9:51Speaker 1: third and unmanageable, and that number was starting to even
- 9:54Speaker 1: out a little bit after the Chargers, Raiders and Commanders game, right,
- 9:59Speaker 1: But now you look back and they're third and long
- 10:03Speaker 1: is one hundred and nine snaps compared to the shortened
- 10:05Speaker 1: medium combined at eighty seven. So yes, it's just living
- 10:10Speaker 1: in third long.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's not a sustainable way to play football.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It's just not. No.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Now they convert I even think you know their sixty
- 10:22Speaker 1: percent conversion on third and short is probably way down
- 10:24Speaker 1: from past years.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it is for sure, because their.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Opponents are actually converting third and short better than them. Yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 1: they're doing third and medium better than their opponents and
- 10:36Speaker 1: right around the same amount of snaps. But third and law,
- 10:39Speaker 1: I mean.
- 10:39Speaker 2: It's the only way they're being able to do anything.
- 10:42Speaker 1: They're also losing to their opponent on third and laws,
- 10:45Speaker 1: so they're losing situationally in two of three third down categories.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Their opponent, and their opponent has more than double the
- 10:52Speaker 2: amount of third and shorts.
- 10:55Speaker 1: That is crazy're right, that is crazy. Fifty two for
- 10:57Speaker 1: the opponent, twenty five for the Eagles. Man. That brings
- 11:01Speaker 1: us to the pie chart again. That great area of
- 11:04Speaker 1: third and long for the Eagles was starting to recede
- 11:06Speaker 1: a little bit. It wasn't normal, but it was starting
- 11:08Speaker 1: to look a little better. And now it's kind of
- 11:10Speaker 1: back through like dominating the pie.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, one step forward, but like five steps
- 11:17Speaker 2: back is kind of the feeling right now. Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Yep. So last year they were forty six percent, this
- 11:23Speaker 1: year fifty six percent. I mean that's just a huge,
- 11:26Speaker 1: huge increase.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is, all right, that was fun. I'm
- 11:34Speaker 2: so glad we had fun on that one.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And now we get to do advanced offensive data for
- 11:39Speaker 1: the Eagles.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I'm ready to skip offense again.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah I see a lot of red here.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you do. You would. All their epas were negative,
- 11:51Speaker 2: meaning that basically, anytime they touched the ball they were
- 11:54Speaker 2: taking points off the board. That's really what that means
- 11:58Speaker 2: at the end of the day. Yeah, it feels really bad.
- 12:03Speaker 2: They also had a higher negative net time before pressure,
- 12:08Speaker 2: meaning that Hurts was holding onto the ball and throwing
- 12:10Speaker 2: it while being pressured. On average, the quarterback pressure percentage
- 12:16Speaker 2: was higher in this game. Their sack percentage was better,
- 12:19Speaker 2: the pressures were not turning into sacks as much as
- 12:22Speaker 2: only one sack ye average separation was worse. The runs
- 12:26Speaker 2: were less successful, but the runs were stuffed at a
- 12:28Speaker 2: lower rate, which is as good, but they still were
- 12:31Speaker 2: not turning into anything great. And then the Bills ran
- 12:36Speaker 2: a stacked box less times and then a light box
- 12:40Speaker 2: more times than the season average.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Well, so then cause and effect right. If the Bills
- 12:46Speaker 1: didn't stack the box and had a lighter box than most,
- 12:49Speaker 1: that would explain whether the runs were stuffed at a
- 12:51Speaker 1: little bit of a lesser rate to just devoted th
- 12:54Speaker 1: people to stuffing the run.
- 12:56Speaker 2: They didn't need to.
- 12:57Speaker 1: That's yeah, that's not a great thing for the Eagles.
- 13:00Speaker 1: So you want people in the box so you can
- 13:01Speaker 1: throw the ball. The one thing that's interesting to me
- 13:05Speaker 1: is that I figured with such a bad EPA per
- 13:07Speaker 1: pass at minus point three one, I thought that would
- 13:09Speaker 1: have dragged the season average below zero. I think it
- 13:12Speaker 1: was at below zero. I'm sorry, I think it was
- 13:14Speaker 1: at zero last week too. We were talking about how
- 13:17Speaker 1: close they were last week to having all three epas
- 13:21Speaker 1: per play, per pass, per rush being negative, but per
- 13:24Speaker 1: pass right now it's still neutral at zero point zero zero.
- 13:28Speaker 1: They got one game left to get this thing into
- 13:30Speaker 1: the negative.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Sam, spoiler alert, I'm not sure they're going to get
- 13:34Speaker 2: it out.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you never know, because McKee is you know,
- 13:37Speaker 1: if he starts and against the bad Commander's defense and
- 13:41Speaker 1: they throw the ball around a little bit, it's you
- 13:42Speaker 1: never know.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I just think at this point it's pretty much set.
- 13:46Speaker 2: It would take a pretty big anomaly. I feel like that, Yeah,
- 13:49Speaker 2: listen what we can explore it next week and you
- 13:51Speaker 2: can be like I told you so, Sam, or I
- 13:53Speaker 2: could be like I'm sorry, Jeff, I'm not sure.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Well, let's face it, this is a cumulative season thing, right,
- 14:00Speaker 1: even if they got EPA for pass into like plus
- 14:02Speaker 1: point zero one. I don't think that we're going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: sit here and be really proud of the Eagles for that.
- 14:07Speaker 2: No, no, we're not, all right.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I love the I love this chart that you've been
- 14:13Speaker 1: putting together over the last few weeks, the formation, the
- 14:16Speaker 1: success by formation, and which formations that they're in, because
- 14:20Speaker 1: they really, to me tell a story Sam of an
- 14:24Speaker 1: Eagles coaching staff that is now openly admitting I don't
- 14:28Speaker 1: know if you heard Kevin Patula's press conference on Tuesday,
- 14:31Speaker 1: that they're just trying to find different ways to get
- 14:35Speaker 1: to where they want to be, even seventeen weeks into
- 14:38Speaker 1: an eighteen week season, right, and it just seems like
- 14:41Speaker 1: each week they have a new formation that they are
- 14:44Speaker 1: heavier on compared to the others, or a different one,
- 14:47Speaker 1: not a new one, a different one.
- 14:48Speaker 2: It feels like he's just experimenting, and I feel like
- 14:52Speaker 2: this is not really the time to experiment. I guess
- 14:55Speaker 2: if you're gonna do it before the playoffs that you
- 14:58Speaker 2: don't want to do it there. But at the same degree,
- 15:01Speaker 2: you need to figure this stuff out weeks ago. This
- 15:05Speaker 2: needed to be figured out weeks ago, right, And then
- 15:08Speaker 2: when they do find success, it feels like they completely
- 15:11Speaker 2: avoid what caused success before. And I'm not sure if
- 15:15Speaker 2: they just want to get more on tape before the playoffs.
- 15:17Speaker 2: So just different formations, different looks, just to keep defenses
- 15:20Speaker 2: honest like that, there is you know, validity to that strategy. However,
- 15:27Speaker 2: it just feels like the play calling isn't putting the
- 15:31Speaker 2: players in position to be successful, and then the players
- 15:33Speaker 2: aren't executing. It's just dysfunctional from top down. It just
- 15:38Speaker 2: really is.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I agree. I think a good idea maybe for the
- 15:41Speaker 1: last one, you know, the one that wraps up the
- 15:42Speaker 1: commander's game, is to focus less on that game, especially
- 15:45Speaker 1: if backups play, and maybe try to take a look
- 15:48Speaker 1: at these these boxes you put together over last five ways,
- 15:52Speaker 1: just individually and see like which formations were their flavor
- 15:56Speaker 1: of the week that week and how it had changes
- 15:59Speaker 1: on change on a week's week basis. Sure we could
- 16:03Speaker 1: certainly do that. So this game felt like sort of
- 16:06Speaker 1: old Eagles offense right shotgun. On thirty out of the
- 16:09Speaker 1: fifty three snaps, that's where they mostly ran out of
- 16:12Speaker 1: it's what they mostly passed out of. You know, you
- 16:15Speaker 1: saw saying a lot of the routes like the hitches
- 16:18Speaker 1: and the glance routes and things like that. It just
- 16:22Speaker 1: it seems it seemed odd that they made these strides
- 16:24Speaker 1: and then went back to sort of being the old
- 16:26Speaker 1: Eagles offense.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Well, it also could be opponents specific too, Yes, that's true.
- 16:30Speaker 2: That I didn't mention before is like they feel like
- 16:33Speaker 2: this formation they've seen tape, that it works better against
- 16:36Speaker 2: you know, the Bill's defense or whatever. And you know,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I think it's really important that we at least mentioned
- 16:41Speaker 2: that and that there is legitimate reasons for using certain
- 16:45Speaker 2: formation and certain certain plays and certain structures just because
- 16:50Speaker 2: you know, you know what look you're getting sometimes when
- 16:52Speaker 2: you put them in shotgun and you know two by two,
- 16:57Speaker 2: you know what, you know what defense are gonna come
- 16:59Speaker 2: out like they're.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Trying to dictate that matchup. Of course.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so I at least wanted to mention that because
- 17:06Speaker 2: we are giving criticism, but context is still really important.
- 17:09Speaker 1: It is, But I also feel like you played your
- 17:12Speaker 1: strengths too, and the Bills were down three defensive tackles.
- 17:15Speaker 1: They are down at Oliver they're down the two star
- 17:20Speaker 1: the Penn State kid Daikwon Jones, right, and Jordan Phillips.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So you're playing you're playing old guys like Larry Ogunjobi.
- 17:28Speaker 1: You're pulling guys, you know, way down your depth chart
- 17:31Speaker 1: to be the interior of your defense. I would have thought,
- 17:35Speaker 1: you know, go a little information, get the fullback and
- 17:37Speaker 1: the tight end in there, and pounded up the middle
- 17:40Speaker 1: because they don't have a very good run defense to
- 17:42Speaker 1: begin with. But and I'm not saying the Eagles didn't run,
- 17:44Speaker 1: they just ran from shotgun play. They they seem to
- 17:48Speaker 1: want to more just spread out the bills instead of
- 17:50Speaker 1: trying to maybe get a little extra beef up the middle,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you know.
- 17:53Speaker 2: And then when they did go with a full back,
- 17:55Speaker 2: it was Goddard in the fullback position, which I just
- 17:58Speaker 2: feel like it's just miss utilizing Godard. Goddard's incredible player, obviously,
- 18:03Speaker 2: but that just is not plays to his strengths, right.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Right, So let's say, did any of these formations yield
- 18:12Speaker 1: you know, good results for them? I guess Pistol.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Pistol is the only one, literally the only one.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Most sample size, with two plays, two runs, two efficient runs,
- 18:22Speaker 1: and one hundred percent success rate.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know empty when they ran the ball,
- 18:29Speaker 2: that was one hundred percent success.
- 18:30Speaker 1: But you know what surprised me. I thought that they
- 18:33Speaker 1: had passed the ball out of empty formations really well
- 18:35Speaker 1: but here and again small sample size, only four plays,
- 18:38Speaker 1: but zero percent success there or I'm sorry, one one
- 18:41Speaker 1: one successful play out of spread empty.
- 18:43Speaker 2: And it was when Bigsby motioned back in fright and
- 18:48Speaker 2: ran the ball, So it wasn't really it was emotioned
- 18:52Speaker 2: out of empty. I'm not sure I would have characterized
- 18:54Speaker 2: this that at play is empty, but hey.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That's a good point. I would have not characterized that.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I would have charted that as empty. I would chart
- 19:01Speaker 1: whatever you're in prior to this.
- 19:03Speaker 2: The ball one hundred percent. Agree with you, but I
- 19:05Speaker 2: have to go on the data points that NFL pro
- 19:08Speaker 2: uses just for consistency's sake. So but I do think
- 19:13Speaker 2: that's an important caveat.
- 19:15Speaker 1: There you go, All right, Eagles offense by formation, this
- 19:20Speaker 1: is against, this is against.
- 19:23Speaker 2: This last game, right, Yes, I don't know why I
- 19:26Speaker 2: did tried to charted an update properly, but it's fine.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Okay, no worries. A lot of shotguns. Still fifty seven
- 19:32Speaker 1: percent shotgun. I do think that the wedge here, the
- 19:39Speaker 1: second biggest formational percentage being single back nineteen percent, is
- 19:43Speaker 1: a pretty good sign of growth overall, Like maybe not
- 19:46Speaker 1: for this year, but maybe going forward that they can
- 19:48Speaker 1: they can do some things when they're under center, because
- 19:51Speaker 1: I think their play action passing game has largely been
- 19:54Speaker 1: pretty good from under center.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yeah, I one hundred percent agree, And that's kind
- 19:59Speaker 2: of what both film and the statistics show.
- 20:02Speaker 1: All Right, what do you see here in the Saquon
- 20:05Speaker 1: Barkley run chart?
- 20:06Speaker 2: A lot more red than we've seen in the past
- 20:08Speaker 2: couple of weeks. Yeah, especially again, a lot of the
- 20:13Speaker 2: outside runs have been read the past couple like, honestly
- 20:17Speaker 2: weeks ago, and they stopped really doing that, and now
- 20:20Speaker 2: they went back to it, and that's the result they're getting. Right.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Even the yellow sam has a wide variance because yellow
- 20:27Speaker 1: is zero to five, whereas five is good, zero's bad.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So a yellow line could be either a good thing
- 20:31Speaker 1: or a bad thing. So you have to look at
- 20:33Speaker 1: the lines, and you see a lot of what I
- 20:35Speaker 1: look at as zero to two.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yes, which are you surprised about?
- 20:40Speaker 1: No? No, I feel bad for Saquon man, I really
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean, I think he's shown at times this year
- 20:46Speaker 1: when the blocking's there, even against the Commanders. You know,
- 20:49Speaker 1: he like bullied his way to that touchdown after there
- 20:51Speaker 1: were some nice blocks in front of him. But I
- 20:55Speaker 1: don't think he's lost anything. I just think he's just
- 20:57Speaker 1: getting a hit constantly.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah, And the thing is everyone, I mean we predicted
- 21:02Speaker 2: that there would be a regression production just because it's
- 21:06Speaker 2: impossible to replicate the season. I mean that season was
- 21:10Speaker 2: historic last year for Saquon Barkley. Yes, did we think
- 21:13Speaker 2: it would be anything like this?
- 21:15Speaker 1: No?
- 21:15Speaker 2: No, not at all. And again I don't think it's
- 21:17Speaker 2: Saquon's fault either. I do think Saquon Barkley has a
- 21:21Speaker 2: tendency to try to be play hero ball and every
- 21:26Speaker 2: make every play a home run hit. And I think
- 21:29Speaker 2: he's done a better job at not doing that as much.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Are The problem is, like it compounds with the inefficiency
- 21:38Speaker 2: and the struggles of the offensive line that you know,
- 21:42Speaker 2: I mean there's people in the backfield almost every single play, Yeah,
- 21:45Speaker 2: blocked defenders in the backfield.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Or a good point. There was a couple of games
- 21:51Speaker 1: in a row where I thought he did this like
- 21:52Speaker 1: legs stutter thing that it goes back to Penn State
- 21:55Speaker 1: where he squats and almost throttles down looking for the hole,
- 21:58Speaker 1: and his legs widen a little bit and he he
- 22:01Speaker 1: almost waddles out of it. Like you see, he's so athletic.
- 22:04Speaker 1: He's like trying to go left and right at the
- 22:05Speaker 1: same time and then winds up getting stuck in neutral.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And I thought there were some times he was doing
- 22:10Speaker 1: that in the middle of the year, just trying to
- 22:12Speaker 1: look for something. I think he's been a better straight
- 22:15Speaker 1: line and cutback runner over the last few weeks, but
- 22:18Speaker 1: that hasn't in this game. You wouldn't tell because he
- 22:20Speaker 1: was just getting hit too quickly.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yeah, he just was. And like I was saying that,
- 22:24Speaker 2: they're either players are unblocked, which is to me as
- 22:27Speaker 2: a scheme problem, or they were poorly blocked, which is
- 22:30Speaker 2: an execution problem. They're having honestly the worst combination of both.
- 22:34Speaker 2: The scheme is problematic, but the execution is problematic too.
- 22:37Speaker 2: That there's blame to go to Petula, but there's blame
- 22:39Speaker 2: to go to the players. I don't think Saquan is
- 22:42Speaker 2: to blame here. I really think the offensive line has
- 22:45Speaker 2: degraded significantly and there's a lot of explanations for that,
- 22:50Speaker 2: but we don't need to even delve into why it
- 22:54Speaker 2: just we need to point out that that is part
- 22:56Speaker 2: of the issue.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Yes, So, as you have here, Barkley is thirty eighth
- 23:02Speaker 1: in rushing yards over expectation at minus point three and
- 23:05Speaker 1: thirty seventh in rush EPA at minus two point six,
- 23:08Speaker 1: which just goes to what we were just talking about
- 23:11Speaker 1: the Jalen Hurts chart. What do you think?
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it looks more like a real quarterback
- 23:17Speaker 2: in the NFL, and not just the one side.
- 23:21Speaker 1: True, he introduced both sides again, nothing over one pass
- 23:24Speaker 1: over the middle, which may have been his best pass
- 23:26Speaker 1: of the year, but other than that, everything on the sides.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yep. I agree with that.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Does that concern you? Does this feel like a little
- 23:35Speaker 1: bit of a regression in his using the entire field?
- 23:41Speaker 2: Not really, It doesn't concern me that much, because the
- 23:46Speaker 2: thing is, when the Eagles are down, I honestly I
- 23:49Speaker 2: would love to look into this maybe in the off season.
- 23:52Speaker 2: When they're down, they target the middle of the field
- 23:54Speaker 2: significantly more than when they're up. Almost like it's uncanny
- 23:59Speaker 2: how often that happens. And I think that's just because
- 24:01Speaker 2: they have to. They have to. Yeah, but they're an
- 24:05Speaker 2: extremely conservative pass offense except for the shop. Like that's
- 24:09Speaker 2: so weird to say because they do take shot plays,
- 24:11Speaker 2: but it's it's very like conservative even in that it's
- 24:15Speaker 2: weird to say.
- 24:16Speaker 1: No, no, you're right because a shot play that Jalen Hurts
- 24:19Speaker 1: typically takes down the sideline means either because of his
- 24:22Speaker 1: proficiency with it, his guy catches the ball or goes
- 24:25Speaker 1: out of bounce. It's it's very rarely a shot played
- 24:29Speaker 1: down the line that's gonna that has, you know, into
- 24:32Speaker 1: a into a hole like a cover two hole where
- 24:34Speaker 1: it's gonna get picked off by a safety rotating over right,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I mean they choose their spots correctly to me. Also,
- 24:42Speaker 1: the CPOE for him, the completion percentage over expectation of
- 24:45Speaker 1: minus three point five this game. I forget what it
- 24:48Speaker 1: is for the year, but this he used to be
- 24:49Speaker 1: like among the tops of his stat that way. Has
- 24:52Speaker 1: that was the Jalen Hurts stat and it has not
- 24:55Speaker 1: been that way.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Let's talk about it for a second. Okay, So Hurts
- 24:59Speaker 2: actually start with that stat you know with CPOE, which
- 25:02Speaker 2: again is completion percentage over expectation. All that means is
- 25:06Speaker 2: that you know, based on the algorithm that NFL pro has,
- 25:12Speaker 2: would a normal receiver or normal quarterback throw the receiver
- 25:16Speaker 2: would that be caught typically? And if it is over expectation,
- 25:21Speaker 2: it means that the connection between the quarterback and the
- 25:24Speaker 2: receiver caught a pass that was more unlikely to be caught.
- 25:28Speaker 2: If it's lower, it means they're not completing passes that
- 25:31Speaker 2: probably should be caught. And so with that stat Hurts
- 25:36Speaker 2: ranked twenty fourth in the NFL in week seventeen at
- 25:39Speaker 2: minus three point five percent.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Twenty fourth.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's shared with their EPA per dropback, and
- 25:47Speaker 2: that's just like how many points expected are you adding
- 25:49Speaker 2: each time you drop back the ball? And Hurts was
- 25:53Speaker 2: twentieth in the NFL with that at minus zero point
- 25:55Speaker 2: two one.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Right, And these are categories in the past where even
- 25:59Speaker 1: if the offense in general did not look great, those
- 26:03Speaker 1: statistics did look good. I mean, he owned these categories.
- 26:07Speaker 2: And part of it again is because he has world
- 26:10Speaker 2: class receivers that make it easy on him. And that's
- 26:13Speaker 2: that's credit to Hurts because he's still positioning the throws
- 26:16Speaker 2: in great spots. But I mean having DeVonta Smith and
- 26:20Speaker 2: aj Brown as your receivers are two pretty incredible. Yeah,
- 26:26Speaker 2: and it certainly helps with that statistic.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Yep.
- 26:30Speaker 2: The other stat that I pulled with Hurts was from
- 26:33Speaker 2: NFL Pro Hurts did not complete a pass in the
- 26:35Speaker 2: second half, but won a second game of twenty twenty
- 26:38Speaker 2: five without such which is this. The other week was
- 26:41Speaker 2: Week four at Tampa Bay. No other starting quarterback has
- 26:44Speaker 2: attempted to pass without a completion in the second half
- 26:47Speaker 2: of a win in the last two seasons.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is what coming the Eagles is
- 26:51Speaker 1: so wild, Like it's they have these like terribly egregious stats.
- 26:55Speaker 1: But then the counter is, well, they won the game
- 26:58Speaker 1: and it doesn't make sense.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Well, speaking of that, Hurts is the first QB since
- 27:02Speaker 2: at least nineteen ninety one with multiple such wins in
- 27:05Speaker 2: the single season.
- 27:07Speaker 1: That's crazy. I mean that makes sense. Like, who wins
- 27:11Speaker 1: a game without a completion in the second half other
- 27:14Speaker 1: than Jillen Hurts twice in the year.
- 27:15Speaker 2: It's extremely atypical. It's not it's not a replicable model
- 27:20Speaker 2: for sure.
- 27:21Speaker 1: It's not something that you know, Nick Sirianni and the
- 27:24Speaker 1: chemp pet will go, hey man, look at that history
- 27:26Speaker 1: that we just made That's awesome.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Wow.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Okay, go ahead.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Well, I was going to say we talked about being
- 27:35Speaker 2: broken records, because that's what we are. But now we're
- 27:38Speaker 2: going to talk about records that are broken, which is
- 27:41Speaker 2: a little bit more fun and you know, a positive
- 27:44Speaker 2: way we can look at the offense, yes, because we
- 27:48Speaker 2: need some positivity going into the new year, you know,
- 27:51Speaker 2: I think so, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard's eleven receiving touchdowns broke the record for most
- 28:00Speaker 2: receiving touchdowns in a single season. And then aj Brown
- 28:04Speaker 2: recorded a thousand plus season for yards in all four
- 28:09Speaker 2: seasons with Philadelphia, setting a new franchise record which was
- 28:12Speaker 2: previously tied at three among a lot of Philadelphia greats.
- 28:18Speaker 2: And then Brown is the tenth player in NFL history
- 28:20Speaker 2: with a thousand plus receiving yards and six of his
- 28:23Speaker 2: first seven seasons. Wow.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Wow, it's amazing. Guy going back to Goddar to have
- 28:29Speaker 1: taken a pay cut and then have your most your
- 28:32Speaker 1: best and most productive receiving touchdowns season in franchise history
- 28:37Speaker 1: is really something.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Huh. Yeah, it's definitely worth saying that. It's good they
- 28:42Speaker 2: brought him back. A lot of his touchdowns have kind
- 28:44Speaker 2: of manufactured looks in that red zone area they are
- 28:47Speaker 2: and I.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Think that's that's you know, say, I'm glad you brought
- 28:49Speaker 1: that up. I think that that is one of the few,
- 28:52Speaker 1: if any, maybe the only sign of sort of growth
- 28:55Speaker 1: that we've seen under Kim Batoola with the Eagles offense.
- 28:57Speaker 1: And they've actually talked about, I know, Dallas and I've
- 29:00Speaker 1: heard Kevin talk about going into this year wanting to
- 29:04Speaker 1: do some different things in the red zone, specifically with Dallas,
- 29:08Speaker 1: and it's actually worked, you know, whether it's the shovel pass,
- 29:10Speaker 1: the tush pushes, the you know that doesn't sound that
- 29:15Speaker 1: he scored against the Bills was more of sort of
- 29:16Speaker 1: your block and leak out right, But it was wide
- 29:19Speaker 1: open and it was a good play against that coverage
- 29:22Speaker 1: because it looked like two guys were covering one and
- 29:24Speaker 1: Goddard was by himself. So they've done some really good
- 29:27Speaker 1: things with Goddard in the low red zone especially.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but the problem is getting there.
- 29:33Speaker 1: That's a whole other story. An Aj Brown, you know,
- 29:39Speaker 1: he's an interesting one man. He just even in a
- 29:44Speaker 1: successful year where he goes over a thousand yards, it
- 29:46Speaker 1: just doesn't have the same kind of a usage, same
- 29:50Speaker 1: kind of game breaking impact that we saw the first
- 29:53Speaker 1: few years of his Eagles career when he would just
- 29:56Speaker 1: make all these huge plays down the sidelines or catch
- 30:00Speaker 1: something over the middle turn. He now he'll catch something
- 30:02Speaker 1: over the middle turn. Get it gets like ten to
- 30:04Speaker 1: fifteen extra yards. But there's an explosive element that's not there.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And I don't know if that's him or just the
- 30:09Speaker 1: offense dragging him down.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of both, probably, and
- 30:14Speaker 2: it has been all year.
- 30:15Speaker 1: So look at that crew of Harold Carmichael, Deshaun Jackson,
- 30:21Speaker 1: like quick, that's a pretty good company for aj there.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, it really.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Is, Yes, thank you. You know, Harold is such an awesome,
- 30:30Speaker 1: awesome dude. I talked to Harold as much as I can.
- 30:32Speaker 1: He's very quiet, but he has a lot of knowledge.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And whenever the Eagles, remember when the Eagles took a
- 30:39Speaker 1: couple of flyers on some receivers that were six foot.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Five or taller, like Johnny Wilson.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Johnny well before even before that, they had this kid
- 30:46Speaker 1: MoMA a Fani MoMA. Yeah, a hybrid tight end wide receiver.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And then there was another one who went to play
- 30:54Speaker 1: for the Cardinals. I can't I can see him making
- 30:56Speaker 1: these catches, but I can't remember his name, something Floyd,
- 31:02Speaker 1: maybe I just I can see him. He's a really tall,
- 31:05Speaker 1: lengthy receiver. But you know, Harold would talk to me
- 31:08Speaker 1: about how difficult it was to be his height and
- 31:10Speaker 1: play in the league, specifically with defenders always coming at
- 31:13Speaker 1: your legs and also your ability to get in and
- 31:15Speaker 1: out of breaks when you've got these like stilts, right,
- 31:18Speaker 1: And he was amazing at it and very one of
- 31:22Speaker 1: a kind, unique player. Good guy, great guy.
- 31:25Speaker 2: That's awesome. Yeah, no doubt.
- 31:27Speaker 1: All right, onto the defense. Yay, we have something underlined here,
- 31:33Speaker 1: bolded and underlined.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so their EPA per play at minus zero point
- 31:39Speaker 2: one four is now the second best in the NFL.
- 31:43Speaker 1: To who, let me guess, Texans. You're right, Yes, I
- 31:47Speaker 1: like I think the Texans are the best defense in
- 31:48Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yes, they they. I think the Eagles are right behind them.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I think it's very close.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Broncos pretty good too, probably right up all three there.
- 31:59Speaker 2: But I wanted to point it out because you look
- 32:02Speaker 2: at that, that's the second best in the NFL, right,
- 32:05Speaker 2: and then you look and they still beat it in
- 32:08Speaker 2: this game.
- 32:09Speaker 1: How about that?
- 32:10Speaker 2: But significantly, right, I think why I wanted to bring
- 32:13Speaker 2: it up. That's a big reason why it's bold, and
- 32:15Speaker 2: it's for me to remind everybody that that is. It's
- 32:18Speaker 2: incredible that they're at this. It's even more incredible that
- 32:21Speaker 2: against the Bill's offense with James Cook, who's been great
- 32:24Speaker 2: and Josh Allen, who's been one of the best quarterbacks
- 32:27Speaker 2: in the NFL, who's been MVP multiple times. You know,
- 32:31Speaker 2: it's it's worth staying that saying that they even against
- 32:34Speaker 2: good competition, they're exceeding it.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Yeah, great stuff, Wow, and by a lot. I mean
- 32:41Speaker 1: these are really significant numbers. Minus point two two on
- 32:44Speaker 1: per play and minus point three seven per passes.
- 32:47Speaker 2: That's a huge golf it really is. And it just
- 32:51Speaker 2: shows you how dominant the defense has been.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead, no, sorry, go ahead, No.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I was gonna say, what else jumps out here?
- 33:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, their quarterback pressure was lower, and that
- 33:05Speaker 2: makes sense because Alan can extend. Alan also got the
- 33:09Speaker 2: ball out a lot quicker. It's it's actually funny because
- 33:13Speaker 2: if you look at some of the sacks has been
- 33:15Speaker 2: it was a very obviously a historic sack game. It was.
- 33:20Speaker 2: It was pretty great. Yeah, but and all the most
- 33:23Speaker 2: of the sacks and not all of them, A decent
- 33:25Speaker 2: amount of the sacks came when Alan held the ball
- 33:27Speaker 2: too long. A couple that come to mind is when
- 33:30Speaker 2: he scrambled up and came around and another one where
- 33:33Speaker 2: he just went backwards out of range. Yes, but he.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Kind of causes and the Jalen hurts you in a way,
- 33:40Speaker 1: he kind of caused some of his own sacks.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he did. But it's interesting that on average the
- 33:46Speaker 2: ball was coming out a lot faster, like they were
- 33:48Speaker 2: being very decisive and a lot of those players and
- 33:51Speaker 2: they were schemed up that way. And Joe Brady, you know,
- 33:55Speaker 2: I'm I always have so much respect and admiration for him.
- 33:59Speaker 2: He was at Penn State right before I was there.
- 34:02Speaker 2: I have his notebooks with all these notes at Penn State,
- 34:06Speaker 2: and it's pretty cool. He he's a cool dude. And
- 34:10Speaker 2: I think he's gonna have a lot of success in
- 34:12Speaker 2: the league that he already he already has had a
- 34:14Speaker 2: lot of success. But yeah, I think it's really impressive
- 34:19Speaker 2: that somebody of his caliber, you know, was still stopped
- 34:23Speaker 2: at an historic rate by this Eagles defense. I think
- 34:27Speaker 2: it shows and as you saw, I did not do
- 34:30Speaker 2: a Star of the Statue for the offense because they
- 34:32Speaker 2: don't deserve one, right, But I think it really credit
- 34:36Speaker 2: to Fangio. As you can see, he'll be a spoiler alert,
- 34:39Speaker 2: he'll be the Star of the Statue again for like
- 34:42Speaker 2: the fourth time this season because it was truly a
- 34:45Speaker 2: defensive masterclass. You could tell just some of the ways
- 34:49Speaker 2: that they were reacting that the Bills ran a lot
- 34:52Speaker 2: of concepts that that they showed throughout the season and
- 34:57Speaker 2: that they didn't necessarily get big plays on. But the
- 35:00Speaker 2: Eagles are ready for every single thing that the Bills did. More.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I think the Bill's best plays were sort of throw
- 35:05Speaker 1: the ball up and hope to come down, like Brandon
- 35:07Speaker 1: Cooks and Terrell. Shit, it's not like they were really
- 35:10Speaker 1: well orchestrated. You know, you beat you found the great
- 35:14Speaker 1: void in the zone and exploited it type place right.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Nice And of course vix Blitz rate very low again
- 35:20Speaker 1: at twenty one percent, right around a season average of
- 35:22Speaker 1: twenty percent. I think, yeah, I could tell he just
- 35:24Speaker 1: may have thrown a few extra without Nikobe didn't in
- 35:27Speaker 1: their five man pressures because he saw Campbell blitz a
- 35:31Speaker 1: few times. He saw Zach Bond line up on the
- 35:34Speaker 1: edge and blitz a few times. Right, all right, let's
- 35:38Speaker 1: talk about our star of the stat sheet. Are you
- 35:41Speaker 1: surprised that Fangio.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Is not at all? Not at all? Well, the Eagles
- 35:47Speaker 2: recorded all five of their sacks in week seventeen with
- 35:49Speaker 2: a four man rush, So even their blitzes were not
- 35:51Speaker 2: really successful in terms of in.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Terms of sacking. They had josh, like you said, on
- 35:56Speaker 1: the run and throwing, you know.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Which is still very important, right, Like, I mean, they
- 36:00Speaker 2: still were getting pressures, and that's worth mentioning, But in
- 36:04Speaker 2: terms of converting those blitzes into sacks that didn't happen.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Three of their last four games had at least four
- 36:13Speaker 2: sacks with four man rush. In the last four games,
- 36:16Speaker 2: eighteen sacks with a four man rush, seven more than
- 36:19Speaker 2: any team in the NFL.
- 36:21Speaker 1: That's crazy. I mean, if you're going to beat the Eagles,
- 36:24Speaker 1: you're gonna have to have a good offensive line. There's
- 36:26Speaker 1: just no question. You can't have like a bunch of
- 36:28Speaker 1: backups on on your offensive line. I don't think or
- 36:31Speaker 1: else they're going to get you. Yeah, I agree, So
- 36:36Speaker 1: how about what we have here on Jilex hunting Marcus.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I like, how you have Marcus Epsen here. That's good.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Honestly, I think he needs some credit because he
- 36:44Speaker 2: has performed really well and that position was a big
- 36:47Speaker 2: question mark when mccouba went down. Sure, particularly honestly, it
- 36:52Speaker 2: was a little bit of a question mark sometimes when
- 36:54Speaker 2: mkuba was in. But I digress. For he recorded two sacks,
- 37:01Speaker 2: tied for second in NFL for weeks it should say
- 37:04Speaker 2: wee week seventeen at eleven point one percent sack rate.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Marcus Epps led the team and stops and stops are
- 37:13Speaker 2: just that is when you stop the Basically it's all
- 37:16Speaker 2: about EPA, right, So a stop is where it is
- 37:19Speaker 2: negative EPA. Okay, So he led the team in creating
- 37:23Speaker 2: negative EPA with five and tackles he was tied with
- 37:27Speaker 2: Cooper Gene at nine.
- 37:28Speaker 1: He's really been a stabilizer. That's the best way he
- 37:30Speaker 1: stabilized their defense with with macouba out. You know, not
- 37:36Speaker 1: a volatile player like Sidney Brown, more discipline player, not
- 37:40Speaker 1: a great athlete. So you know, maybe at some point
- 37:43Speaker 1: somebody can take advantage of that. But what the Eagles
- 37:46Speaker 1: pass rush being at is you just needed a stabilizer,
- 37:49Speaker 1: and he's absolutely provided he and he and Blanketship are
- 37:54Speaker 1: sort of similar in that regard. They're not just they're
- 37:56Speaker 1: just not great athletes, but they know where to be.
- 37:59Speaker 1: They're Yeah, they're good football queue they're not going to
- 38:03Speaker 1: have reckless penalties like Sidney Brown. Right. So, by the way,
- 38:09Speaker 1: as I said on a previous show, Sidney Brown is
- 38:11Speaker 1: probably gonna start, you know, if they go with the
- 38:12Speaker 1: backups against the Commanders, and the Commanders are already man
- 38:16Speaker 1: from two weeks ago. I want to fight the Eagles
- 38:18Speaker 1: in general, So what could go wrong?
- 38:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Sidney Brown, he is reckless, and and that's sometimes
- 38:26Speaker 2: a good thing, more oftentimes than not.
- 38:28Speaker 1: It's not right.
- 38:30Speaker 2: I remember, I think there were two plays in his
- 38:32Speaker 2: career where he's hurt his own teammates just by reckless
- 38:37Speaker 2: disregard running and look, he wants to make plays, and
- 38:40Speaker 2: I get that and I respect it. He's a great
- 38:43Speaker 2: he is a good athlete, and I do think he
- 38:45Speaker 2: means well. But it's just so hard watching him hurt
- 38:48Speaker 2: his own players.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Yes, I mean, we had a Patreona ask An Eagle
- 38:52Speaker 1: with Quentin Michael, former Eagle safety, very good safety and
- 38:56Speaker 1: He explained how as he played dext to Ian Dawkins
- 39:00Speaker 1: and learned how to play the game. He explained how
- 39:03Speaker 1: you have to learn to play that position specifically at
- 39:07Speaker 1: certain speeds. You can't play that position all the time.
- 39:11Speaker 1: You play with much effort, but not speed. I'm talking
- 39:14Speaker 1: about speed, right. You have to learn to for pursuit
- 39:17Speaker 1: angles and for like you're saying, communication with teammates to
- 39:21Speaker 1: get into the right spot. You can't just run like
- 39:23Speaker 1: your hair's on fire. But that seems what that looks
- 39:26Speaker 1: like what Sidney Brown does, Like he can't dial it down,
- 39:29Speaker 1: and so you get friendly fire, you get late hits,
- 39:32Speaker 1: and you get beat sometimes. But you'll make a play.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I mean he's made some plays, but you wind up
- 39:37Speaker 1: taking a step forward and then a couple of steps backward.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that's a really good way to say it.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I mean, especially with an Eagles great you know, yeah,
- 39:46Speaker 2: backup for sure.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Now, the BG tracker, this is, uh, this may be
- 39:50Speaker 1: the most disappointing BG tracker in weeks because you know,
- 39:53Speaker 1: he played his seven snaps last year. Last week it
- 39:56Speaker 1: was like incomplete sack interception, sack, sack in complete. This week,
- 40:01Speaker 1: you know, they actually made some moves with him on
- 40:03Speaker 1: the field.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and he also played two special teams snaps so
- 40:07Speaker 2: BG Yeah, but either way incomplete pass on the first
- 40:12Speaker 2: one felt good and then it was six yards nine yards,
- 40:15Speaker 2: two yards, nine yards, four yards, six yards.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Okay, so you know, nothing too terrible, but I was
- 40:20Speaker 1: back breaking place. Yeah, no package the last two weeks.
- 40:23Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. And how many in just limited snaps
- 40:26Speaker 1: what the defense was accomplishing. You knew that had to
- 40:28Speaker 1: come back to earth a little bit. Hey, it's that
- 40:30Speaker 1: time of the year that everyone's trying to clean up
- 40:33Speaker 1: their habits and that includes me. Honestly, having one less
- 40:36Speaker 1: drink never felt easier. Instead of pouring a cocktail, I

- 44:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's fun because I'm kind of expecting
- 44:07Speaker 1: and if it's not, it's still okay. I'm kind of
- 44:09Speaker 1: expecting sort of something similar where he plays like six
- 44:11Speaker 1: to eight snaps and then like amazing things happen in
- 44:14Speaker 1: those in those few snaps.
- 44:15Speaker 2: All right, let's do it. Then let's do right.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Cool. I liked as long as you don't mind, I
- 44:19Speaker 1: like to.
- 44:19Speaker 2: I don't mind at all.
- 44:20Speaker 1: It's pretty DEEPS like it too. He's a you know
- 44:22Speaker 1: everybody loves BG. All right, good stuff, Sam, those were
- 44:26Speaker 1: really you made chicken salad, as we say, out of
- 44:30Speaker 1: you know what, because yeah, offensively, that was not nothing great.
- 44:34Speaker 1: So maybe we'll talk about this before we record next episode.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Maybe next episode is a little bit, especially if backups
- 44:41Speaker 1: are gonna play, is more of like a you know,
- 44:44Speaker 1: the stats that define the season type of season recap. Yeah,
- 44:48Speaker 1: season recap instead of a game recap. We'll figure that out.
- 44:51Speaker 2: You tell me what you want and we'll get it done.
