Latest / Jags A.M. / Jags A.M. Podcast Ep. 215 | Jaguars Pre-Draft Approach & Free Agency Predictions
Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good morning and welcome to jags Am. It's still a
- 0:20Speaker 1: bit quiet in the National Football League, though things are
- 0:22Speaker 1: picking up this week. The combine is underway. Teams are
- 0:26Speaker 1: maneuvering to get themselves ready for the start of the
- 0:28Speaker 1: new league year, which is just a few short weeks
- 0:31Speaker 1: from now, and obviously preparations continue for free agency in
- 0:34Speaker 1: the draft. We've got a big jags Am for you.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Mark Duffner is back this week. John Osier a standing
- 0:40Speaker 1: by with his usual brand of intellect and witty repartee.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So let's get right to our big things and we'll
- 0:45Speaker 1: start with no tags.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You may have seen bed last night.
- 0:49Speaker 1: The Atlanta Falcons applied the tag to the franchise tag
- 0:52Speaker 1: to their tight end. The Jaguars, as of yet, have
- 0:55Speaker 1: not used a tag on either running back Travis et
- 0:59Speaker 1: and Junior or All Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd and John
- 1:03Speaker 1: It doesn't appear, at least it doesn't appear now that
- 1:07Speaker 1: the Jaguars are going to use a tag when either
- 1:09Speaker 1: those players.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Look and it can change. It's the NFL, it's free agency.
- 1:13Speaker 2: They have until next Tuesday, believe to do it. I
- 1:19Speaker 2: don't get the idea either player will be back. Unfortunately.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I like them both, and a Devon would be a
- 1:26Speaker 2: really big tag number, whether it's transition which is a
- 1:29Speaker 2: little less, or franchise, and I just don't get the
- 1:34Speaker 2: vibe that they're gonna use it with Travis. To me,
- 1:37Speaker 2: Duff Travis makes the most sense because of that running
- 1:41Speaker 2: back position. It is often a draft and wear you
- 1:45Speaker 2: out position. And I don't mean to say it cruelly
- 1:47Speaker 2: like that, but fifth year, you get into your sixth
- 1:50Speaker 2: year at the franchise tag. Maybe that's the limit of
- 1:53Speaker 2: real running back effectiveness. So some teams do it that way.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I'm not sure I see that as the Jaguars MANU
- 2:00Speaker 2: this time.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
- 2:02Speaker 5: I don't know what their thoughts will be as far
- 2:03Speaker 5: as that's concerned, but I'm with you in terms of
- 2:05Speaker 5: what the league and what other clubs do in the past.
- 2:08Speaker 5: I know that he certainly was a very versatile player,
- 2:11Speaker 5: very productive player. So some consideration I think will be
- 2:14Speaker 5: given towards Travis in that regard.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Mark take us into the mindset of a coach.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You have all pro caliber players etn SQ, we're thirteen touchdowns.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He wasn't ut all pro, but he was really important
- 2:24Speaker 1: to the Jaguars, and of course Devin Lloyd had such
- 2:27Speaker 1: a monster season. What's the mindset of a coach is
- 2:30Speaker 1: they have to get ready to play without these guys.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Well, you know, first the mindset, you hope you can
- 2:35Speaker 5: play with those guys. You know, I'd be lighting candles
- 2:38Speaker 5: in church and saying the Rosary and hopes that we
- 2:41Speaker 5: could figure out a way to get it done. But
- 2:43Speaker 5: you know, when you lose these guys and you're going
- 2:46Speaker 5: to work like crazy to find ways that you can
- 2:48Speaker 5: replace him. This roster is has good depth as productive players,
- 2:53Speaker 5: so I think a lot of it is in house.
- 2:55Speaker 5: But you know they'll look at free agency or be
- 2:57Speaker 5: scouring the player selection As far as that concern, you'll
- 3:00Speaker 5: be looking at the draft in terms of where we
- 3:03Speaker 5: can possibly have players that could fill the avoid left
- 3:05Speaker 5: by their absence.
- 3:06Speaker 2: To Brian people have you know, in my writing about
- 3:09Speaker 2: these two guys, people have sort of accused me of
- 3:11Speaker 2: being too casual about Well, it looks like they're gonna
- 3:13Speaker 2: be gone. They'll replay them. It's a draft and replace
- 3:16Speaker 2: leagues sometimes, so you have to deal with that reality.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Particularly Travis, they're gonna miss some things about him. If
- 3:23Speaker 2: he's not here, and I don't necessarily know that it's
- 3:26Speaker 2: the every down stuff, But some of those runs you
- 3:29Speaker 2: looked at, he is really matured as a runner. There's
- 3:33Speaker 2: stuff that he does during the play, some moves, some
- 3:37Speaker 2: extra vision stuff downfield. Not every bat can do that,
- 3:42Speaker 2: So I think you're gonna miss some big plays. A
- 3:45Speaker 2: seventy one yard run with another back last year might
- 3:48Speaker 2: have been a thirty yard run, you know. So I
- 3:50Speaker 2: do think, Look, anytime you let a guy go, it's
- 3:53Speaker 2: risk you're gonna lose something. To me, that's what they
- 3:55Speaker 2: might lose with Travis, But they'll pick something else up
- 3:58Speaker 2: in whatever back they get.
- 3:59Speaker 4: For sure.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Everybody's got strength and weaknesses. I would just say listening
- 4:03Speaker 5: to everybody and observing the evolution, I guess of this
- 4:07Speaker 5: past season with Travis, he did gain. His vision got better,
- 4:10Speaker 5: his ability to catch the ball, his ability to make
- 4:13Speaker 5: plays got better and better, and so and I think attitudely,
- 4:16Speaker 5: he brought so much to replacing you know, that's going
- 4:19Speaker 5: to be an issue.
- 4:20Speaker 4: I like what we got coming back in the remaining backs.
- 4:23Speaker 5: But again, he certainly had a productive year for us,
- 4:27Speaker 5: not only as a player but as a person.
- 4:28Speaker 1: All Right, Our second big thing is no combine. Listen
- 4:32Speaker 1: to the Jags will tell you at the combine there
- 4:33Speaker 1: will be scouts there, but you know it's John is
- 4:35Speaker 1: here and Kyle Stevens is not there, and in recent
- 4:38Speaker 1: years they've been there covering it. Jaguars don't have a
- 4:41Speaker 1: huge presence at this year's combine. James Gladstone, the general manager,
- 4:45Speaker 1: is not there. Liam Cohen, the Jaguars head coach, is
- 4:48Speaker 1: not there. They are de emphasizing the combine.
- 4:53Speaker 3: To some degree.
- 4:54Speaker 2: John, Yeah, well to a big degree. In this sense
- 4:59Speaker 2: they I want to focus on the football part of
- 5:02Speaker 2: these guys and not the workout part. And they also
- 5:06Speaker 2: don't consider the in person interview as important for this reason. Yes,
- 5:13Speaker 2: it's good to get with somebody and talk to them,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but the theory right now that they're holding too is
- 5:19Speaker 2: these guys are so prepared, the agents have been so prepared.
- 5:22Speaker 2: What are you really getting? You know? And I get that,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you know, you can look for something intangibly rich in
- 5:29Speaker 2: a guy. That's James Gladstone's phrase in a face to
- 5:33Speaker 2: face meeting. But really I've met a lot of people
- 5:37Speaker 2: who I thought were intangibly rich and I called them
- 5:39Speaker 2: something else about six months later. So I think that's
- 5:43Speaker 2: what you're trying to avoid, is that that first impression
- 5:47Speaker 2: they don't want the football stuff and their research, meaning
- 5:50Speaker 2: the research that they do into these players, clouded by
- 5:55Speaker 2: short meetings that don't tell you as much as the research.
- 5:58Speaker 2: That's the theory. Not everybody agrees with it, but that's
- 6:01Speaker 2: what this team is going to do well.
- 6:03Speaker 5: I think with the preparation that these guys got, just
- 6:05Speaker 5: as you mentioned a minute ago, they are so well
- 6:07Speaker 5: prepared it's almost like a recording that comes out during
- 6:10Speaker 5: these interviews. Now, the one thing I would say that
- 6:13Speaker 5: what I gained from going to the combine a lot
- 6:15Speaker 5: is I try to get on the field with these
- 6:17Speaker 5: guys in terms of either running the drills or being
- 6:20Speaker 5: on the field watching them participating in the drills, listening
- 6:23Speaker 5: to how they could understand instructions, how they follow instructions,
- 6:27Speaker 5: how they finished all this type of stuff. And then
- 6:29Speaker 5: I also think it was value at the time to
- 6:31Speaker 5: try to interview the unit group leaders, if you will,
- 6:36Speaker 5: scouts from other teams that volunteered to kind of monitor
- 6:39Speaker 5: and deliver these players around during the course of the combine.
- 6:43Speaker 5: So you interview them, you talk to these leaders and say, hey,
- 6:46Speaker 5: who's on time all the time? Who's stuff that you
- 6:49Speaker 5: can try to get more depth in terms of information,
- 6:52Speaker 5: in terms of are these guys paying attention, are they
- 6:54Speaker 5: on time? Are they reliable? Are they respectful? All these
- 6:58Speaker 5: type of things. I think there's a lot you can
- 7:00Speaker 5: still gain from it. But I'm also the ilk that
- 7:04Speaker 5: stay at home and continue to study and get it
- 7:07Speaker 5: in depth research on the football. The videotape is the
- 7:09Speaker 5: most important thing what these guys do, So I hear
- 7:13Speaker 5: both sides of it.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Brian, I've had coaches tell me that they didn't
- 7:16Speaker 2: even really listen to what the player said, but they
- 7:19Speaker 2: tried to get around the groups of players when they
- 7:21Speaker 2: were interacting with each other, you know, who showed themselves
- 7:25Speaker 2: be a leader around the group, and they tried to
- 7:29Speaker 2: watch them when they didn't know they were being watched.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Because everything else is a stage, and.
- 7:34Speaker 1: The Jaguars will have a presence there, it just won't
- 7:36Speaker 1: be as overwhelming as many of the other teams and
- 7:39Speaker 1: as the Jaguars have had in the past.
- 7:41Speaker 3: When you go.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Thirteen and four, doing things differently has a lot of
- 7:45Speaker 1: underscore and emphasis, and the Jaguars are doing things differently
- 7:49Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. Our final big thing kind of
- 7:52Speaker 1: plays into that. It's no worries. And it's not that
- 7:54Speaker 1: the Jaguars don't have a to do list of things
- 7:56Speaker 1: they want to get done. But John, when you come
- 7:58Speaker 1: it off of a thirteen and four season and you
- 8:00Speaker 1: see the rock solid leadership we saw all year long
- 8:04Speaker 1: from Tony Biselli, James Gladstone, and of course what Liam
- 8:07Speaker 1: Cohen did with his team in the locker room and
- 8:09Speaker 1: on the field, you just don't have a lot of
- 8:11Speaker 1: worries about the way they're going forward. Meanwhile, there are
- 8:15Speaker 1: ten teams that have brand new administrations, either both football
- 8:19Speaker 1: and coaching, or one or the other.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Well, we're not worried. I can tell you that that's
- 8:26Speaker 2: not the approach inside the building. I had a chance
- 8:31Speaker 2: to talk with Liam and Trevor very briefly yesterday, and
- 8:34Speaker 2: the theme with both of them is, hey, last year
- 8:38Speaker 2: is great. We can't think that anything we did last
- 8:41Speaker 2: year matters. So they're using the same sort of energy.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But I'm with you, Brian. I look at James Gladstone,
- 8:47Speaker 2: I listened to Tony BASSELLI listened to Liam Cohen, and
- 8:51Speaker 2: if you listen to these guys as well. To me,
- 8:55Speaker 2: the overriding trait of all three of these guys is
- 8:59Speaker 2: when they talk about football and they talk about making decisions,
- 9:03Speaker 2: it's all about the stuff that matters. There's no periphery,
- 9:08Speaker 2: there's not hey, we're gonna play this guy because of
- 9:10Speaker 2: this draft. You know, it's the football stuff. I think
- 9:13Speaker 2: we talked about it last week. You think that's easy,
- 9:17Speaker 2: but it's not always the case. And I guess, to me,
- 9:20Speaker 2: that's why I don't worry about these guys, because I
- 9:22Speaker 2: feel like they're making decisions for the right reasons.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Well, shoot, I'm with you on that.
- 9:27Speaker 5: I saw them last year at Tech a number of situations,
- 9:30Speaker 5: a number of adverse situations with well thought out, organized
- 9:34Speaker 5: plans right and by the way, the result, their answers worked.
- 9:40Speaker 4: And so no, I have a lot of confidence in
- 9:42Speaker 4: what I.
- 9:43Speaker 5: See in terms of the leadership and right now in
- 9:46Speaker 5: player acquisition that they're thinking about.
- 9:49Speaker 4: I mean, I think it's outstanding.
- 9:50Speaker 5: And like I said, I would be if I was
- 9:52Speaker 5: one of these other teams, I'd be trying to sneak
- 9:55Speaker 5: in here and find out really what's going on, because
- 9:57Speaker 5: they've got it. They've got it down right now, and
- 9:59Speaker 5: they are. I mean the message that Liam gave to
- 10:02Speaker 5: the team year two, Hey, what we did last year
- 10:04Speaker 5: is nothing, It's in the rearview mirror. Year two is
- 10:07Speaker 5: going to be more important than ever before. Can we continue?
- 10:10Speaker 5: Can we get better? And so I love that approach,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and that's going to be the energy and the effort
- 10:15Speaker 5: that everybody puts forward to Attaina.
- 10:17Speaker 1: No worries, not satisfied, but you know, it's interesting for
- 10:20Speaker 1: the Jags and for the fans, the people who are
- 10:22Speaker 1: watching the show and people in Jacksonville to go into
- 10:25Speaker 1: year two with a measure of confidence that has been
- 10:28Speaker 1: locking around here for some time.
- 10:30Speaker 3: All Right, that's big things. When we come back, we'll
- 10:32Speaker 3: have John.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Osier's number one play from the twenty twenty five season.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Doves is coming up a little bit later, and the show.
- 10:39Speaker 1: We'll talk about what's going on at the combine with
- 10:41Speaker 1: the competition committee. Next on, Jack's am.
- 10:49Speaker 3: His first and goal with thirty seconds left.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Now Larrence goes down, it has to get up, takes
- 10:57Speaker 1: a tap touch down. So I asked these guys yesterday
- 11:08Speaker 1: for their favorite play from the twenty twenty five season,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and we'll get Mark Duffner's After the next break.
- 11:15Speaker 3: You immediately hit me back. I mean within a minute
- 11:17Speaker 3: you wanted that play.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Well, sometimes you just go chalk. I mean, we talked
- 11:21Speaker 2: about so many plays. I could have gone with Parker
- 11:23Speaker 2: Washington's touchdown against Arizona, which we both thought was the
- 11:26Speaker 2: turning point for Trevor Lawrence. There were so many plays.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I say about a cool season is there's plays like that.
- 11:35Speaker 2: The Chiefs game had the two that when people are
- 11:38Speaker 2: doing highlights in twenty five years, they'll do Trevor's play
- 11:41Speaker 2: in Devin Lloyd's play. The interesting thing about the plays
- 11:45Speaker 2: and that was an unbelievablelay. We've talked about so much.
- 11:50Speaker 2: When I did a key Plays series about three weeks
- 11:53Speaker 2: ago off this season, most of the big plays I
- 11:57Speaker 2: used were in the first like eight or nine games,
- 12:00Speaker 2: and I looked and I realized they were so good
- 12:03Speaker 2: in the second half of the season that they didn't
- 12:05Speaker 2: need the big moment play anymore. They were just sort
- 12:09Speaker 2: of winning games going away. It was early when they
- 12:12Speaker 2: needed the stuff that you look back and go, boy,
- 12:14Speaker 2: you got at lucky there. They got so much better
- 12:16Speaker 2: that you really didn't need that sort of play. But
- 12:19Speaker 2: this stuff was these are the moments, right, This is
- 12:23Speaker 2: why people love this sport.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Oh, without a doubt. I mean the effort, the emotion,
- 12:28Speaker 5: the enthusiasm that you feel.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I mean wasreible and making something out of nothing, which
- 12:32Speaker 2: sometimes in this league it didn't go right. And then
- 12:35Speaker 2: special guys do special stuff.
- 12:38Speaker 4: No question about it.
- 12:39Speaker 5: And that's the great players make big plays when you
- 12:42Speaker 5: need it, the motion when you don't have anything in there.
- 12:45Speaker 4: This guy made it.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Well listen, Trevor.
- 12:47Speaker 1: He's just always so cool and calm and composed when
- 12:50Speaker 1: the cameras are on him when when it's not. And
- 12:52Speaker 1: the thing that I loved about that was the grit
- 12:54Speaker 1: and the toughness in the way that he reacted. I mean,
- 12:56Speaker 1: people like to see that emotion. That reminded me of
- 12:58Speaker 1: Pat Mahomes, of Josh Allen, you know, of the big
- 13:01Speaker 1: name quarterbacks doing something tough when their team needed it
- 13:05Speaker 1: the most.
- 13:05Speaker 3: And that may not have been the turning point for him.
- 13:08Speaker 1: It may have been later in the season, as John
- 13:09Speaker 1: alluded to, but to me, that was the moment where I.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Said wow, and the biggest stage there was at that time.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Kid still the Chiefs at that point, without a doubt, one.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Of the things for five years. You know, people are
- 13:23Speaker 2: always writing about a lot of players on the team,
- 13:25Speaker 2: well are they emotional? Do they love it enough? And people,
- 13:28Speaker 2: I think he didn't really realize how much this kid
- 13:32Speaker 2: wants it. For whatever reason. Narratives start right, Oh, well
- 13:36Speaker 2: he's calm on the sideline, so he's not a fire
- 13:38Speaker 2: he got He's always wanted it. A desire is not
- 13:41Speaker 2: the problem for him. It was kind of cool. I
- 13:44Speaker 2: think that fans saw, oh he's gritty too, so uh,
- 13:48Speaker 2: which most of these guys.
- 13:49Speaker 5: Do not absolutely getting off the ground fighting like heck
- 13:55Speaker 5: to get in the anzel and like I said, in
- 13:57Speaker 5: a moment, we needed it the most.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Well then he put it all together. Any Tracy, it
- 14:01Speaker 1: was a tremendous year for the quarterback. All Right, the
- 14:04Speaker 1: Combine is going on. We alluded to the fact that
- 14:06Speaker 1: Jaguars have a small presence there but not the normal
- 14:09Speaker 1: overwhelming show with force the teams have done for years.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Things are going on there, obviously with players, but also
- 14:15Speaker 1: the competition committee meets, and both of you guys are
- 14:17Speaker 1: familiar with that, and the theme this year for the
- 14:19Speaker 1: competition committee has been so far, the game's in a
- 14:21Speaker 1: good place.
- 14:22Speaker 3: We don't need to do too much.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. I mean there are things that you know,
- 14:29Speaker 2: the old school guy and me would love to see
- 14:33Speaker 2: change tweeked. I personally think we have reached the stage
- 14:37Speaker 2: where pass interference is called way too much on touchy plays,
- 14:44Speaker 2: but that promotes offense in the League's not changing that.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not gonna get my way again, duff.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I mean like this is like I never get my way,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and this is another thing I'm not gonna get it on.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I'd like to see that it's not gonna happen. But overall,
- 15:00Speaker 2: I think the league does have a point of it
- 15:04Speaker 2: has reached a point where the rules are in pretty
- 15:06Speaker 2: good shape. I don't love the kickoffs, but the big
- 15:12Speaker 2: kickoff that we used to see ain't coming back. So
- 15:15Speaker 2: for what they're trying to do, it's probably as good
- 15:17Speaker 2: as it can be. I don't know what I would suggest.
- 15:21Speaker 4: No, I don't know either. I'm with you. I think
- 15:23Speaker 4: a game is in good shape.
- 15:24Speaker 5: I also, I was ready to say, you're singing my
- 15:26Speaker 5: number one song on the past interference and I've saw
- 15:30Speaker 5: a lot of them that you know, many very controversial
- 15:33Speaker 5: ones that were game affecting. Still but I think the
- 15:36Speaker 5: game is moving in the right direction and I don't
- 15:39Speaker 5: see that. You know, the big, big thing that right
- 15:41Speaker 5: now is a hot topic that we got address, you know.
- 15:43Speaker 1: The on side kick was one that we thought we
- 15:45Speaker 1: might see addressed. Yeah, also the tush push. Those have
- 15:49Speaker 1: been two hot button issues, but so far it doesn't appear.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Either one is going to be changed in this office.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Well, here's the weird thing. The outside kick does need
- 15:59Speaker 2: to be fixed because there's a moment in the game
- 16:04Speaker 2: where it has changed it from a team has a say,
- 16:07Speaker 2: a twenty five percent chance, and it's reduced that too much.
- 16:10Speaker 2: There's that two minute and ten second score when you're like, well,
- 16:15Speaker 2: the onside kit can't work. I don't love the idea
- 16:19Speaker 2: of what the eighteen yard fourth and eighteen play they're
- 16:22Speaker 2: setting up because that doesn't feel like football to me. Yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 2: but by the same token, the toush push doesn't feel
- 16:29Speaker 2: like football to me either, and they leave that in.
- 16:31Speaker 2: So there, this is one of those conflict points that
- 16:36Speaker 2: eventually they'll figure something out with both and it'll feel
- 16:39Speaker 2: right again. I don't love the touch pushed.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Up, No, and I don't either.
- 16:44Speaker 5: You know, it waks so much of rugby right, and
- 16:47Speaker 5: actually the pushing and lighting the down movements that you
- 16:51Speaker 5: see on the toush pushes even kind of morphed into
- 16:53Speaker 5: some of the inside run game where sometimes you're seeing
- 16:56Speaker 5: additional yardage when the play should be dead. So I
- 16:59Speaker 5: think my suggestion and be to you know, get the
- 17:02Speaker 5: officials opinion on all this a little bit more, because
- 17:05Speaker 5: they're the ones that got to call the game, and
- 17:07Speaker 5: their calls are critical as we move forward.
- 17:10Speaker 4: And I would think that's a tough play to officiate.
- 17:12Speaker 2: And and what you said is exactly right, a tough
- 17:16Speaker 2: play to officiate. It is always taking into consideration on
- 17:19Speaker 2: competition committing stuff because they want to make it to
- 17:21Speaker 2: where it can be even across the league, correct me
- 17:24Speaker 2: if I'm wrong. For a while, you couldn't push from
- 17:27Speaker 2: the back right correct.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Run.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And they brought it back because it was too hard
- 17:35Speaker 2: for them to officiate whether it was being done or not.
- 17:38Speaker 2: They were gray areas. So they finally just said, hey,
- 17:41Speaker 2: we'll let it go happen again. They try to make
- 17:45Speaker 2: it to where the official doesn't have to use judgment
- 17:47Speaker 2: in that situation. In this case, sometimes you go too
- 17:51Speaker 2: far the other way with stuff. It feels like that
- 17:54Speaker 2: with a touch push to me. But we're old men, so.
- 18:02Speaker 1: So as you bring up the officials, it's it's worth
- 18:04Speaker 1: pointing out Troy Vincent was quoted in a story that
- 18:06Speaker 1: hit the wires yesterday hit the wires.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I'm an old man too, But that made the rounds
- 18:13Speaker 3: that they were.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Talking not considering necessarily, but talking about allowing replay officials
- 18:20Speaker 1: to be able to toss a flag. And there were
- 18:23Speaker 1: a couple of instants in the playoffs where they might
- 18:25Speaker 1: have been able to throw a flag while watching the
- 18:28Speaker 1: video and seeing a blatant penalty. There was a play
- 18:32Speaker 1: with the Seahawks player who threw a punch in the
- 18:34Speaker 1: Super Bowl. I forget who it was that did that,
- 18:37Speaker 1: but it was one of those situations they used as
- 18:39Speaker 1: an example. What would you think if replay officials were allowed?
- 18:45Speaker 1: And of course they're going to say, in very limited
- 18:48Speaker 1: circumstances to be able to say there's a penalty there,
- 18:50Speaker 1: you need to put a flag in the ground.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I think the key is and I really dug into
- 18:55Speaker 2: what Troy's talking about. I would expect exactly what you said,
- 18:59Speaker 2: the blatant very Oh this guy lined up off sides.
- 19:03Speaker 2: We can see it. That's what they've always tried to
- 19:05Speaker 2: keep replay to. And if it's those things, then I
- 19:08Speaker 2: would think what they're talking about would happen so seldomly
- 19:12Speaker 2: that it wouldn't disrupt the game. Everybody thinks that they
- 19:16Speaker 2: want to see more officiating until it happens, and then
- 19:21Speaker 2: it's irritating.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Right, No, I'm with you on that.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I think I think I like it if it's a blatant,
- 19:26Speaker 5: blatant situation.
- 19:27Speaker 4: That and again affects the game.
- 19:30Speaker 5: You know, otherwise that you too many stops, too many
- 19:33Speaker 5: pauses as far as that's concerned, these official and when
- 19:36Speaker 5: you look at it closely, they.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Do a phenomenal job.
- 19:39Speaker 5: I mean, you know, all of us can have the
- 19:42Speaker 5: advantage of sitting at home and watching on TV and
- 19:44Speaker 5: a replaying shlow.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Motion and all that kind of stuff. Try to do
- 19:47Speaker 4: it live.
- 19:48Speaker 5: And Jesual Pete, what they do I think is exceptional
- 19:51Speaker 5: and we want to keep that humanilment in the game.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I think the key here, Brian, there's no way Troy
- 19:56Speaker 2: is talking about pass interference right right, and everybody body
- 20:00Speaker 2: wants replay on pass interference, which is the most absurd
- 20:05Speaker 2: thing to try to bring back into replay, because if
- 20:08Speaker 2: I'm sitting and if Duff's pulling for the Bengals and
- 20:12Speaker 2: I'm pulling for the Browns and we see a pass interference,
- 20:15Speaker 2: it doesn't matter how blatant we think it is. We're
- 20:18Speaker 2: going to argue about it until the next round comes.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Well, the three words that I've heard the most about
- 20:22Speaker 1: the officials since the end of the season and what
- 20:25Speaker 1: the league wants to do. They want them to be consistent,
- 20:28Speaker 1: They want them to be transparent, and they want them
- 20:31Speaker 1: to be predictable. And that's what they're trying to achieve.
- 20:34Speaker 3: All Right, that's news from Indianapolis.
- 20:36Speaker 1: When we come back, Mark Duffner's number one play from
- 20:38Speaker 1: the twenty twenty five season.
- 20:40Speaker 3: It we'll look around the AFC South.
- 20:41Speaker 1: It maybe predict where the Colts, Texans, and Titans might
- 20:46Speaker 1: spend some of their free agent dollars coming up in
- 20:49Speaker 1: the next few weeks. All that and more straight ahead
- 20:51Speaker 1: on Jags, Am, I'm set it down Lloyd again, Devin Lloyd.
- 21:05Speaker 2: What a year?
- 21:07Speaker 3: Still rolling down the sideline. One man defeats Lloyd.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Big six, huge moments in that big, big game, all
- 21:20Speaker 1: pro caliber season. Duff that was sure number one play
- 21:23Speaker 1: by the way.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Linebacker coach, linebacker coach, that's an easy one. We talked
- 21:27Speaker 3: about Devin Lloyd during training camp.
- 21:29Speaker 1: You and I stood in the end zone and watched
- 21:30Speaker 1: him and I said, coach, what's it going to take
- 21:32Speaker 1: for him to finally realize his potential?
- 21:34Speaker 3: And you said to me, it's on the coach. Yeah,
- 21:37Speaker 3: I mean Len Debaku. What a job.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he did with Devin Lloyd this year. And
- 21:42Speaker 1: obviously a lot of credit to a guy who had
- 21:44Speaker 1: seven takeaways.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Unbelievable man.
- 21:46Speaker 5: And on this particular play, and when you look at
- 21:49Speaker 5: it's fourteen to fourteen, I think it was two minutes
- 21:51Speaker 5: and thirty seconds left and third quarter, fall in the
- 21:53Speaker 5: one yard line, second one time to make a big,
- 21:56Speaker 5: big play, and he made it like nothing.
- 21:58Speaker 4: I mean nine.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Yards to longest picking pick six in franchise history. They're
- 22:04Speaker 5: in a three by one. I would call him speed
- 22:06Speaker 5: trips formation, kind of a bunch route and run a
- 22:08Speaker 5: spacing route. He knew it was coming, got right in
- 22:11Speaker 5: the middle of that. Great coaching, great preparation on his part.
- 22:14Speaker 5: Touchdown unbelievable. And by the way, he's the player of
- 22:17Speaker 5: the AFC Player of the Week, the week before against
- 22:19Speaker 5: San Francisco with two picks. You talk about an electric
- 22:22Speaker 5: moment and consistency in production.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Wow, we heard Joe Buck in the call say what
- 22:26Speaker 3: a season at the forty yard lock.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah it was a fifth week.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it was about that point John that I said
- 22:32Speaker 1: to myself, goodbye death, good luck, because you saw that
- 22:36Speaker 1: play and you realized he was going to get paid it.
- 22:41Speaker 2: And it's awfully tough in free agency to pay a
- 22:45Speaker 2: linebacker for interceptions. And that's just sort of the NFL reality.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And I hear def sign next to me because the
- 22:53Speaker 2: linebacker coach, what's that guy? And I do too. It's
- 22:57Speaker 2: just difficult. The thing about Devin and it was true
- 23:00Speaker 2: this year. When you can get him around the ball,
- 23:03Speaker 2: he is his hands and his instinct, his ability to
- 23:07Speaker 2: make plays. He's had a lot of forced turnovers in
- 23:12Speaker 2: his career. Here made a lot of big plays. If
- 23:15Speaker 2: it doesn't work out, I will miss that guy.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Well, let me just say this again. You mentioned Tim
- 23:20Speaker 5: Lucabo's impact on him. You know Devin again, we were
- 23:25Speaker 5: talking preseason about his production has been there.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Well, whatever the case, all I know is this year
- 23:29Speaker 4: boy was.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Being boom boom kept going up and up and up,
- 23:32Speaker 5: and kudos to both of them in terms of the
- 23:35Speaker 5: preparation and the work they have put into it to
- 23:38Speaker 5: be that productive and contributing to this team.
- 23:40Speaker 1: But when you look at that off ball linebacker position,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I mean, you're making comparisons to some pass rushers into
- 23:45Speaker 1: some guys that make, you know, thirty thirty five million
- 23:48Speaker 1: dollars a year. It just gets cost prohibitive to try
- 23:50Speaker 1: to pay him on a franchise tag or to pay
- 23:52Speaker 1: him what he's going to command, because someone is going
- 23:55Speaker 1: to write him a huge check and the Jaguars are
- 23:58Speaker 1: going to figure out a way around that. All right,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Let's let's shift our conversation to be ac South, gentlemen.
- 24:03Speaker 1: We'll talk a little bit about the Colts as we
- 24:06Speaker 1: get things started here, and one big thing that they
- 24:11Speaker 1: should be looking to do in free agency. The draft
- 24:16Speaker 1: is a totally different ballgame. It's still quite a ways
- 24:18Speaker 1: your way. But when you're looking at a cornerstone move
- 24:21Speaker 1: for the Colts, John, what do you see it as
- 24:22Speaker 1: being well?
- 24:23Speaker 2: To me? Daniel Jones, I mean, is is he coming back?
- 24:28Speaker 2: What do they think of him? And achilles is a
- 24:32Speaker 2: different kind of injury to me? If if you're dealing
- 24:36Speaker 2: with a player who depends on twitch, you really worry
- 24:39Speaker 2: about that injury. Quarterbacks can come back from it. It's
- 24:42Speaker 2: not as debilitating for the quarterback position. They were rolling
- 24:47Speaker 2: with him. Is he your guy that you say he's
- 24:52Speaker 2: going to be our franchise for four or five years?
- 24:56Speaker 2: That to me, If on the Colts, that's that's a
- 24:58Speaker 2: difficult decision.
- 24:59Speaker 1: The complicating factor there is is that his injury took
- 25:02Speaker 1: place in December. Yeah, if that had happened in September,
- 25:05Speaker 1: you probably feel a little bit better because you'd know more.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yeah, guys come back from a little quicker than they
- 25:10Speaker 2: used to.
- 25:12Speaker 3: But you might be paying him to play and he
- 25:14Speaker 3: might not be able to play.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Yeah, but when you're out there, the Achilles is one
- 25:18Speaker 2: of those that you always worry about. Again, if you
- 25:21Speaker 2: come back too soon? Set your point?
- 25:24Speaker 3: What do you do?
- 25:25Speaker 2: Deff, you're the boss.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Well, let me say this to you. I years ago, Achilles,
- 25:28Speaker 5: if you had it, you were done right. The progress
- 25:31Speaker 5: medical research and advances are done right now.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Remarkable how you can come back. And I'm with you
- 25:38Speaker 4: on the thing.
- 25:39Speaker 5: I'm more optimistic that he'll come back and be able
- 25:42Speaker 5: to perform at the level and perhaps even better based
- 25:45Speaker 5: on a lot of other players' recent advancements as far
- 25:48Speaker 5: as that's concerned. But again it's a question you wish
- 25:51Speaker 5: the timing wasn't the way you want it. But I
- 25:54Speaker 5: got a feeling that's going to work out for him.
- 25:55Speaker 1: He made fourteen million dollars last year as a bargain
- 25:59Speaker 1: for you agents here with the Colts.
- 26:01Speaker 3: So that's really where it gets tricky.
- 26:03Speaker 1: They're going to have to figure out how much do
- 26:04Speaker 1: we pay him and when do we get him. I
- 26:07Speaker 1: think I'm with John he'll come back, because we've seen
- 26:10Speaker 1: quarterbacks make it back. Aaron Rodgers is the most recent example,
- 26:13Speaker 1: a couple of years ago for the Jets, having toured
- 26:16Speaker 1: his achilles and then playing for the Jets and the
- 26:17Speaker 1: Steelers in subsequent years. The question is how much of
- 26:21Speaker 1: the cap, how much of a risk do you bite
- 26:23Speaker 1: off on a quarterback until you know.
- 26:25Speaker 2: And is that the directions alts are going to go?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Meaning midway through last season it was clear they were
- 26:29Speaker 2: all in right now. I don't know anybody up there anymore.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Are they still all in right now? Or are they
- 26:36Speaker 2: WHOA let's pull back and roll.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Well, it's complicated because they don't have first round picks.
- 26:40Speaker 1: That's the next two years that quarterback. Yeah, they put
- 26:42Speaker 1: themselves in a tough spot. All right, let's move on
- 26:44Speaker 1: to the Texans. They've got a quarterback issue as well.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Their quarterback did not play very well though, he was
- 26:49Speaker 1: sacked fifty six times, So it seems like offensive line
- 26:52Speaker 1: might be a spot they should look.
- 26:53Speaker 5: At Duff Absolutely. I mean, again, you've got to protect
- 26:56Speaker 5: the quarterback. I mean, any team. When we were in
- 26:59Speaker 5: sencient it was critical that we did did that with
- 27:02Speaker 5: Joe Burrow and every team has to get that done.
- 27:04Speaker 5: So again, protecting the quarterback's got to be paramount. Getting
- 27:08Speaker 5: that line better.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you also wonder if you know, it's sort of
- 27:12Speaker 2: Nico Collins and everybody else, you wonder if they might
- 27:16Speaker 2: get c. J. Strouts some more help. But I'm with you,
- 27:17Speaker 2: offensive line, but he gets sacked that much. Stroud to
- 27:21Speaker 2: be their quarterback next year. But I've got to think
- 27:26Speaker 2: in Houston there's some wondering about what where that position
- 27:29Speaker 2: is going.
- 27:31Speaker 3: You had to make a decision soon on his fifth
- 27:32Speaker 3: year option.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that's and that's not really a discussion because it's
- 27:36Speaker 2: not really free agency. But at some point the Texans
- 27:41Speaker 2: Stroud started off. It looked like his franchise got Is
- 27:45Speaker 2: it the offensive line that's the reason that he hasn't
- 27:47Speaker 2: looked like that? Or is it him? I'm sure those
- 27:50Speaker 2: are the debates going on in Houston right now.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Well, and listen, their running game was completely missing this
- 27:56Speaker 1: year and you could tell that they missed that big back.
- 27:59Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Joe Mix heard you know from the get go.
- 28:01Speaker 5: That affected them big time. So again I'm with you.
- 28:05Speaker 5: You gotta have weapons around round the guy. But again
- 28:07Speaker 5: protection is going.
- 28:08Speaker 1: To be critical, all right, And let's heart to the Titans.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Robert Sama checks in as the head coach there. We
- 28:12Speaker 1: know Robert from his time here, and it would seem
- 28:15Speaker 1: that pass rush. They've got the young quarterback. He's got
- 28:17Speaker 1: a shoulder injury that he's rehabbing from. But if you're
- 28:21Speaker 1: Robert Salah, the one thing that you turn the tape
- 28:24Speaker 1: on and look, and so there was zero pressure on
- 28:27Speaker 1: the quarterback from his defense line.
- 28:29Speaker 4: If you can't win without effect on the quarterback, you
- 28:31Speaker 4: cannot do it. And and we've seen teams that do
- 28:33Speaker 4: it effectively.
- 28:34Speaker 5: About Seattle and what they did and in Super Bowl
- 28:36Speaker 5: in terms of effecting the quarterback, and that's arch Russian coverage,
- 28:39Speaker 5: that's pressure, that's interior blitz, it's exterior bit people coming
- 28:44Speaker 5: off the edge. So absolutely they've got to enhance that
- 28:47Speaker 5: to go where they want to go defensively and as
- 28:49Speaker 5: a team.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Yeah, in interesting and see what they do too. Pass
- 28:52Speaker 2: rush has to be it there there where the Jaguars
- 28:57Speaker 2: were last year. Do they go all in on free agency,
- 29:02Speaker 2: meaning three or four rockstar guys, or do they take
- 29:06Speaker 2: the Jaguars approach because as they didn't go rock star
- 29:08Speaker 2: last year, they built in spots where they knew. It
- 29:12Speaker 2: feels like the Titans roster is probably further away than
- 29:15Speaker 2: the Jaguars roster when this regime came in last year.
- 29:19Speaker 2: So I would expect a little bit of a star
- 29:24Speaker 2: chasing mode from them, which I'm glad because I'm not
- 29:29Speaker 2: a big star.
- 29:29Speaker 3: It doesn't work all that well, right, but that's what
- 29:32Speaker 3: I would think.
- 29:33Speaker 2: They've got money, and they've got the franchise quarterback they
- 29:37Speaker 2: believe coming in. It just besessing how accelerated their start
- 29:42Speaker 2: is now.
- 29:43Speaker 3: It's a good draft for pass rushers.
- 29:45Speaker 1: There will be a few of them when the Titans
- 29:47Speaker 1: are on the board because they've got an early pick,
- 29:49Speaker 1: so the other way they could go is to protect
- 29:51Speaker 1: that quarterback.
- 29:52Speaker 3: They've got a hole at left tackle. Perhaps that's a spot, you.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Know, maybe they're looking around at different guys, even to
- 29:57Speaker 1: trade to find someone to fill that hole.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Well they've been you know, so not the worst team
- 30:01Speaker 2: in the NFL, but they've been in that conversation for
- 30:04Speaker 2: two years. Usually when that happens, you have holes. We
- 30:08Speaker 2: know that.
- 30:09Speaker 1: We've seen it out of experience firsthand, right absolutely, all right,
- 30:12Speaker 1: when we come back, we'll wrap up this edition of
- 30:14Speaker 1: Jags Am, I'll give you mine number one plays. I've
- 30:18Speaker 1: got two of them from twenty twenty five, and we're
- 30:21Speaker 1: back after this.
- 30:22Speaker 3: On drags am six yards away. It's up there, it's
- 30:33Speaker 3: out there.
- 30:34Speaker 2: And it's gone.
- 30:37Speaker 3: It's gone for sixty eight.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Jim Little sixty seven yards.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Listen.
- 30:49Speaker 1: This isn't very often that you have an NFL record,
- 30:54Speaker 1: and the Jags got too. They got the longest outdoor
- 30:57Speaker 1: and the longest indoor kick in the same season. John
- 31:00Speaker 1: That kick in Las Vegas really I think ignited the
- 31:02Speaker 1: Jags in the second half, the momentum, it was so
- 31:05Speaker 1: much fun.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And then the one.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Against the Titans I mean you're just you're looking across
- 31:10Speaker 1: the field and saying, you know, punt, punt, don't don't
- 31:15Speaker 1: give the Jaguars the opportunity, and Mike did and and
- 31:19Speaker 1: as a result, the Jags made him pay.
- 31:21Speaker 3: And that I just I enjoyed it.
- 31:23Speaker 2: That was fun. Yeah, it was another example what I'm
- 31:25Speaker 2: talking about early in the season, and the Raiders game
- 31:28Speaker 2: was what week it was, game nine. I think for
- 31:30Speaker 2: game eight, this team needed moment plays to propel it.
- 31:36Speaker 2: That's where the memory plays came from. And that was
- 31:38Speaker 2: as big as any of them. Obviously, in an overtime game,
- 31:42Speaker 2: every point you would have lost if you hadn't gotten it.
- 31:44Speaker 2: But everybody who was in that locker room said, the
- 31:47Speaker 2: mood changed once you hit that sixty eight yarder. A
- 31:50Speaker 2: because everybody loves this kid. I mean, he spent anything
- 31:53Speaker 2: he does. People love him like a little brother. But
- 31:56Speaker 2: because he's really good. I mean, I mean, he has
- 31:58Speaker 2: a sixty eight yarder. Even the players, not all players
- 32:04Speaker 2: know anything about the league, so it's probably not every
- 32:06Speaker 2: player on that moment knew that was a record, but
- 32:09Speaker 2: they knew sixty eight orders really long.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Real long.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Well, they got a glimpse of it in preseason when.
- 32:15Speaker 3: He kicked a long seventy order.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Yeah, in preseason, so you knew this was a bomb
- 32:19Speaker 5: waiting to go off. So I mean again, like you said,
- 32:22Speaker 5: a well like guy, a tremendous competitor.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Jesu was awesome.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Let's the only record the Jags have, the only record
- 32:28Speaker 1: in the NFL record book that says Jacksonville Jaguars next
- 32:31Speaker 1: to it.
- 32:31Speaker 3: So it had to make our top.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Plays and something. That's as somebody who's followed the league
- 32:38Speaker 2: since I was five years old, and I used to
- 32:41Speaker 2: have the record in fact book and I would write
- 32:43Speaker 2: stuff down and do sharts and all that. That record.
- 32:48Speaker 2: To have the same person have both of the two
- 32:51Speaker 2: longest is absurd. Sixty eight and sixty seven too longest
- 32:57Speaker 2: field goes NFL history. He's kicked him. That's one that
- 33:03Speaker 2: he probably didn't think when he was thirteen years old
- 33:05Speaker 2: kicking field goals on his high school field. Whatever happened.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Tom Dempsey for the New Orleans Saints at the Old
- 33:10Speaker 1: two Land Stadium kicks sixty three yarder in nineteen seventy
- 33:13Speaker 1: and it wasn't until nineteen ninety eight that it was
- 33:16Speaker 1: matched against the Jags in Denver, right, and then you
- 33:20Speaker 1: know that's what thirty twenty eight, twenty nine years later now,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and it's been broken several times, and I think if
- 33:26Speaker 1: you were to ask, you'd find out that they would
- 33:29Speaker 1: expect that that would be broken.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Into Yeah, Cam doesn't. I mean I haven't talked to
- 33:33Speaker 2: Cam about this since he had the sixty seven yarder,
- 33:36Speaker 2: but last year early he did. He fully expect there's
- 33:43Speaker 2: some good kickers in the next year for these two
- 33:45Speaker 2: records to fall. He should and I think he will
- 33:49Speaker 2: savor the moment of owning both of them. But he's
- 33:52Speaker 2: also the kind if this thing gets broken by seventy
- 33:55Speaker 2: he get it from seventy one. Yeah, I mean he'll
- 33:58Speaker 2: be in There might be age.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Yeah, we haven't heard the last him.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it might be him. Here's old record.
- 34:01Speaker 5: We haven't heard the last of him. And by the way,
- 34:04Speaker 5: what that gives a team in terms of potential and
- 34:07Speaker 5: special situations all this.
- 34:08Speaker 4: Kind of thing.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Wow, Well, the field goal at the end of the
- 34:10Speaker 1: game against the Titan or the end of the half
- 34:12Speaker 1: against the Titans, I mean, you're at midfield and you
- 34:14Speaker 1: you go for it and fourth down, because that's what
- 34:15Speaker 1: coaches used to do.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Not with Kim Little No, no, that's what I mean.
- 34:18Speaker 4: If you don't flip it, it changes all your thinking.
- 34:20Speaker 3: It makes it fun, just like having you in here.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Thanks for coming back two weeks.
- 34:24Speaker 2: In the road to kick Thank you love a great job.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Absolutely, I'll be back for John's mar come back I
- 34:31Speaker 1: expect next week, and maybe Kyle'll even be back with
