- 0:09training camp. And of course we on Thursdays talk with
- 0:14Andrew Checko. We got Eagles training camp. We also got
- 0:17our Divisional preview series. So let's get into it right now.
- 0:20Andrew the Checko of course inside the Birds podcast, inside
- 0:24the Birds dot com for all of his excellent Eagles coverage,
- 0:27and don't forget about the check O Daily which we
- 0:29get on the Inside the Birds platforms as well. And
- 0:33he joined us right now on ninety seven to three ESPN. Andrew,
- 0:37welcome in.
- 0:38Speaker 2: How you doing today, my friend, Hey, Josh.
- 0:40Speaker 3: I'm doing great. Football is back in South Philadelphia and
- 0:44it just feels right.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Man, It definitely does feel right.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So a couple of things I want to hit on
- 0:48with you from today at training camp. You know, we
- 0:52played the VIC Fangio press conference a little bit earlier
- 0:55today and one of the questions he was asked about
- 0:57is something Andrew that you at previews brought up last
- 1:01year about Cooper dejene about how he was asked about
- 1:06them using him at safety. And I want to get
- 1:08your perspective on this because you are someone who keeps
- 1:11a very close eye on the draft.
- 1:12Speaker 2: You evaluate those guys every year.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So knowing what you know about Degene coming out of
- 1:17college and now looking ahead to what you're seeing from
- 1:21him the last two years. Obviously last year's are the
- 1:24year injured, but this year's all full go a training camp.
- 1:28Is what they're doing with the Gene now more in
- 1:31line with what you expected him coming out last year.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great question, Josh, and you have a
- 1:38good memory. When I scouted him and evaluated him throughout
- 1:41the draft process, I viewed him as a multifaceted defensive
- 1:45back that I thought his strength actually was at safety.
- 1:48I just think that his vision, his range, his anticipation
- 1:53and instincts really translates to that. He's also a tremendous
- 1:56corner obviously, But to your question, Yeah, I think that
- 2:00this is kind of more of what I envisioned because
- 2:02he's such a valuable asset to the defense, have him
- 2:06being able to wear so many different hats, being such
- 2:08a smart player, because you can only thrive and be
- 2:11able to play multiple positions if you are intelligent have
- 2:14a good idea of the full just the look the
- 2:18full makeup of the defense and all those responsibilities. So
- 2:22I think that it is something that is going to
- 2:25serve a defense well. And it just really underscores how
- 2:28important Cooper Dejene is for the defense success in twenty
- 2:31twenty five.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You just mentioned about the intelligence.
- 2:34Speaker 1: If I get to ask you about that really quick,
- 2:35because everyone talks about the Jeen's athleticism, right, you know,
- 2:38he was a high school basketball player and all that
- 2:40kind of stuff, But is maybe de Jean's football IQ.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Well, could that actually be his most valuable trait?
- 2:49Speaker 3: I think so. His football IQ's off the charts. And
- 2:52that's one thing that if you go back and look
- 2:53at all the different safeties that pig Vangio has presided over,
- 2:57I can think of off the top of my head,
- 2:59Dante Whitner, Eddie Jackson. They all have the same qualities
- 3:04and they are instinctual, but they're also highly intelligent. And
- 3:08I think you look at the nickel position, which I
- 3:11would say is the toughest position to play on defense,
- 3:14you have to be intelligent because you have to know
- 3:16what all three levels of the defense are responsible for.
- 3:19You also have to you know, be able to account
- 3:21for different types of receivers, because it's not only you know,
- 3:25the Chris Godwins that are playing in the slot, it's
- 3:27also the Mike Evans type of receivers and you don't
- 3:30have the sideline, and so I just think that, you know,
- 3:33you take all that into consideration. Also his ability to
- 3:36come up there and play the run and be a willing,
- 3:40willing and run support and be that physical player. Yeah,
- 3:42I think he really is such a well rounded player.
- 3:45But at the top of the list has to be
- 3:47his football intelligence.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Talk with Andrew Cheko, of course with the Eagles training
- 3:51camp today football and for empowered by the Inside the
- 3:54Birds podcast. You got all of indiw Jecko's coverage of
- 3:57the Birds over at Inside the Bird dot com. Sticky
- 4:01on the Defense got to ask you about jahat Campbell.
- 4:04Fangio talked about how you know, you know that basically
- 4:07that what they were talking and showing him in mini
- 4:11camp is already seemingly translating onto the field the first
- 4:15two days of training camp.
- 4:17Speaker 2: What are your takeaways from Campbell right now?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Because it seems like if you if you're kind of
- 4:21like to pay attention with Fangio is saying, it sounds
- 4:24like if Campbell keeps performing the way he is in practice,
- 4:29that he could be your Week one starter next to Bond.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean, we obviously have a long way
- 4:35to go, but all all indicators are that he's ahead
- 4:38of schedule, because the timeline we were all given back
- 4:41in the spring was sometime in August. He's out there
- 4:44in a limited capacity, but he's doing team drills and
- 4:49with the second team, and talking to that Bond after
- 4:52day one of training camp, he mentioned, yeah, he did miss,
- 4:55you know, some valuable time in the spring, but it
- 4:57doesn't look like he is very far behind. And I
- 5:00think that again speaks to the football acumen. But you
- 5:04can even see the traits, the length, just the range
- 5:08and the coverage acumen that he brings to that position.
- 5:11And it wouldn't surprise me if eventually he starts to
- 5:14get some looks with the first team and they sort
- 5:16of gradually implement him into that And it wouldn't surprise
- 5:19me at all as well if he's the starting linebacker
- 5:22week one. If he's healthy enough, you drafted him in
- 5:24the first round, he's got to be your guy.
- 5:27Speaker 1: A lot of people on social media have been chirping
- 5:30and giving out opinions on Keeley Ringo. I want to
- 5:33get your perspective, Andrew, because people might not remember this,
- 5:37but this was a five star recruit out of high
- 5:39school before he got to Georgia, and he's actually one
- 5:43of the youngest guys on the roster even though he's
- 5:46been here for a couple of years. So what is
- 5:48your perspective on him right now early on in camp.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, well, the star ranking and being young and all that,
- 5:55it doesn't really matter into this roster battle, this competition.
- 6:00It's about being consistent day in and day out and
- 6:03seizing opportunities. And yeah, he had a tough practice Day one.
- 6:08Today was sort of unremarkable. There were no big plays
- 6:10and he didn't make any plays. But it's going to
- 6:13be the ups and downs. You're going to constantly see
- 6:15Adorri Jackson and Kielee Ringo, you know, rotating back and forth.
- 6:19You know, Kilee Ringo started the first day and then
- 6:22yesterday or today he was you know, with the with
- 6:25the first team on seven on seventh and a Dori
- 6:27Jackson open practice with the starters. I don't know that
- 6:30you can really gauge where he's at after two days
- 6:33of practice. He's he needs to be more technically sound,
- 6:36that's for sure, because I think where he struggles sometimes
- 6:39is he gets handy. Sometimes it looks like he has
- 6:42trouble stopping or finding the football, And those are things
- 6:46that you has it in and you have to make
- 6:47sure that those areas are refined if you want to
- 6:50nail down a starting spot in any defense, but especially
- 6:53one with Vick Vangaio presiding over it, who really prioritizes
- 6:57being assignment sound. It's never been about the leticism when
- 7:00it comes to Kithi Ringo. It's been about It's now
- 7:03about can you be technically refined and can they have
- 7:07confidence in you because you are going to get targeted.
- 7:09Can they have confidence in you to hold down or
- 7:12be effective enough in that spot? Opposite QUINNYA Mitchell.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Andrew, I've been willing to ask you this question all week,
- 7:19and that is about we had a conversation order this
- 7:21week about the running back position. And you are someone
- 7:25who has kept a very close eye on Will Shipley,
- 7:28a guy that you covered very closely over inside the
- 7:31Birds dot Com with your series with him throughout last year.
- 7:36Is he in line you believe to be the primary
- 7:39third down back or do you think he still needs
- 7:42to show that he can do some more things aside
- 7:45from being a third down back in order to become
- 7:48the bonafide number two behind Saquon No.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I think he is going to be the third down
- 7:54back and the change of pace. When you look at
- 7:56Saquon Barkley and what he brings, I think from the
- 7:59ideal compliment to Saquon Barkley would be someone like Bill Shipley,
- 8:03who has a lot of juice. He's explosive, he catches
- 8:06the ball well. Saquon Barkley highlighted his footwork. It's going
- 8:09to come down to pass protection and where he's at
- 8:12in that area of his game, and we'll find out
- 8:14more about that when the pads come on. But I
- 8:17just really think that he is the quintessential change of
- 8:19pace option, whereas aj Dillon. If Saquon Barkley wore to
- 8:23miss a game or two, you know that he can
- 8:25handle a volume, he would be the guy in that situation.
- 8:28But in game Josh, I think that would be Will Shipley,
- 8:31And I mean you just see the different dimension that
- 8:35he provides to the offense every time he's been in
- 8:37there really since the spring.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Check out more coverage of Eagles training camp.
- 8:41Speaker 1: The corner competition continues over at Inside the Birds dot com.
- 8:45Andrews check out here for football at four power by
- 8:47the Inside the Birds podcast Andrew. Before we get out
- 8:50of here, let's just do a quick overview of the
- 8:54AFC South that is part of our weekly series through
- 8:57previewing each division. Tell me what are the teams you
- 9:01are keeping the closest eye on. Who is your favorite
- 9:04in the AFC South and why?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll be keeping a close eye on the Houston Texans.
- 9:10I really like c J. Stroud. Obviously he was probably
- 9:13anointed a little bit too quickly as being one of
- 9:16the more elite quarterbacks in the NFL, but I like
- 9:19his receiving corp Nico Cowens. They drafted Jayden Higgins in
- 9:23the second round this year. Christian Kirk is there. They
- 9:26also have some pieces on the offensive line that I
- 9:28think suggest that, you know, they're going to give him
- 9:31enough time to be able to facilitate the ball to
- 9:34those players, including you know, Cam Robinson, Lake and Tomlinson.
- 9:39Titus Howard's a player who I really like coming out
- 9:41of Alabama State. I think it was twenty nineteen, and
- 9:44they have Dalton Schultz there, and I think they have
- 9:48enough pieces offensively to keep that thing going. I also
- 9:52like the leadership of Demiico Ryans. I think that he's
- 9:55really has has left his mark on that team, that
- 9:58he has a commanding press and really good leadership. I
- 10:02can't really emphasize that enough. Without that foundation, you're not
- 10:05going to go anywhere, and they certainly have that solidified
- 10:08with him. And then defensively, you got guys like Will Anderson.
- 10:11I talked a lot about him going into the twenty
- 10:13three draft, and Daniel Hunter is there right So CJ.
- 10:17Counter Johnson was traded there from Philadelphia. So they have
- 10:21a lot of players on both sides of the ball
- 10:23that are impactful and offer playmaking ability. Now it becomes
- 10:28can CJ. Stroud become the player that he was in
- 10:31year one or closely resembling the one in year one
- 10:35and keep this thing moving forward?
- 10:37Speaker 1: From one NFL covers follow him on the X platform
- 10:40and Andrew the Checko. Of course, all of his work
- 10:42over right inside the Birds dot Com and he joins
- 10:45us each week here on the sports Bashion Football at
- 10:48four On ninety seven, three es Be and Andrew great stuff.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Give the great work my man.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Josh, take care man,
