- 0:00When the spiritual aspiration awakens in an individual, he
- 0:05often feels like he has to leave his employment and take up some
- 0:09work that is more spiritual. He tends to equate the type of
- 0:14work with some I'll defined spiritual nature.
- 0:17Thus we frequently see spiritual people and organizations take up
- 0:22work to feed the hungry, heal the sick, etcetera.
- 0:27This of course, is very positive and needed work and we honour
- 0:32those who make that commitment. Such efforts, however, are not
- 0:36always immediately feasible for an individual, particularly if
- 0:41he is living and working in the society, managing the needs of a
- 0:45family and taking the employment that he is able to get.
- 0:50He may wind up in restaurant service or assembly line action,
- 0:55or working in a warehouse moving products around, etcetera.
- 0:59From an external standpoint, there's nothing spiritual about
- 1:03these things. What makes them spiritual or not
- 1:08is the attitude and effort put into any work.
- 1:11When 1 takes up a line of work, even if it is simply as a means
- 1:15to supporting the family, it can be turned into a practice of the
- 1:19yoga of works by giving the job full and careful attention,
- 1:25doing the best possible, and making the situation one that
- 1:28enhances 1's own Interstate of spiritual development through
- 1:34that dedicated action. The story of the devotee at the
- 1:38Sri Rabindra Ashram who was given the task of drying plates
- 1:42after they were washed is one that illustrates this concept.
- 1:46There's also the famous story from the ancient texts about the
- 1:50youth who came to a teacher and asked for becoming a disciple to
- 1:55learn the science of spirituality.
- 1:59The teacher gave him 2 cattle and told him to take them into
- 2:02the forest and when they were a herd of 1000, he should return
- 2:07and would obtain the teachings. How many years of dedicated and
- 2:13focused effort went into succeeding at the task?
- 2:17When the youth eventually returned, the teacher vacated
- 2:21his own seat for the student and told him that he was now the
- 2:25teacher. As he glowed with the knowledge
- 2:28of the divine, the mundane everyday tasks of looking after
- 2:33cattle, nurturing, feeding and protecting them were turned by
- 2:38the devoted young person into the means of his realization.
- 2:45During the late 1960s and early 1970s, a number of people went
- 2:50to the Oroville project in South India to help build the
- 2:53community. Many of them were engaged in
- 2:56hard manual labor, constructing the matra mandir or various
- 3:01other facilities, planting and tending trees, cooking food,
- 3:06etcetera. The work in and of itself was
- 3:10not inherently what would traditionally be called
- 3:13spiritual, but the dedication and consecrated action based on
- 3:18a deep aspiration is what transformed the hard work into a
- 3:23means of spiritual progress for many.
- 3:27Sri Aurobindo notes quote. One must take it work done in
- 3:32the world as a training and do it in the spirit of karma yoga.
- 3:37What matters there is not the nature of the work in itself,
- 3:41but the spirit in which it is done.
- 3:44It must be in the spirit of the Gita, without desire, with
- 3:49detachment, without repulsion, but doing it as perfectly as
- 3:54possible, not for the sake of the family or promotion or to
- 3:58please the superiors, but simply because it is the thing that has
- 4:03been given in the hand to do. It is a field of inner training,
- 4:07nothing else. One has to learn in it these
- 4:11things, equality, desirelessness, dedication.
- 4:16It is not the work as a thing for its own sake, but one's
- 4:20doing of it and one's way of doing it that one has to
- 4:24dedicate to the Divine. Done in that spirit it does not
- 4:29matter what the work is. End Quote.
