- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the Iron Team series and your daily influence and today we are going to be talking about the role that emotional resilience plays in leadership's area of influence.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is really important because as we become faced with challenges, our emotional stability gets challenged.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: Each of us has a different threshold for, well, losing our temper or showing our emotions in the way we communicate and that can have an amazing influence.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: a residual influence on our teams and on our organizations.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: And it's really important that one of the things that we work on as leaders is our ability to be emotionally resilient.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: What does that mean?
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: Not just that our emotional intelligence is high, because you're going to have high emotional intelligence and understand your emotions.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're only understanding that you're not resilient, that doesn't really do you very much good.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: in creating a stable and dependable environment.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: In managing stress, the setbacks, the unforeseen challenges, the surprises that we get in our lives, and being able to control those situations emotionally, is really important.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: It takes a little bit of work or a lot of work.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: It takes some trust in others, in accepting some constructive feedback from others
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: You are not showing that resilience when you are showing too much of the pressure and it is having a negative effect on your team, allowing people on your team or anybody on your team, to give you some feedback.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: That is where the emotional intelligence can actually kick in, remembering that you've provided that opportunity for your team to share with you that you are showing the stress of a situation, the stress of a moment and help you to get balance, look at the issue, think about how it triggered you,
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: Think about how you might have reacted differently and what you could have done better.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then it becomes a learning opportunity.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: And it becomes something that you not only do for yourself, but as you pivot into these lessons about creating this resilience and supporting stability, your team begins to trust you more because they see you leaning into the help they're trying to give.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: what it will also do from a ripple effect is is if you lead into them when they have their struggles as a leader should that trust just solidifies it hardens it gets better and it can help you as a team to work together through the stressful issues that we face in organizations, the stressful issues that we face individually as parts of that organization and it'll help us to collectively
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: And it also is a heavy part of being responsible.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: As we teach here at the IM team series, positive responsible leadership comes from everybody.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just from one.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we set the pace.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: as company leaders, divisional leaders, departmental leaders, individual leaders of other humans, but those of us who can practice and possess resilience emotionally and are able to maintain a long-term vision on that, communicate that effectively, support our team, even under the pressures that we face.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, then we can understand that by controlling our emotions, working with them, that we inspire ourselves and our teams to do the same thing,
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: It will help us promote those cultures of empathy, transparent communications, and overall collaboration.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: And it fuels that and solves inclusion, equity, diversity, all of those things get solved inherently when we lead with emotional resilience.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: It is not only going to be a more productive work environment, but it's going to be one that actually fuels innovation and growth.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: because if people are comfortable talking to you about the emotional challenges they're having in their areas of influence, imagine how they would talk to you about ideas they have that aren't emotionally driven.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Imagine how they'll react as you engage with them to refine those ideas, work through them, develop them, and turn them into something bigger and better, not only for them, but for everybody.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: Imagine the strength, the emotional strength of an organization when leadership at all levels shows emotional resilience, our behavior matters, your influence matters, how we react to the things that surprise us, stress us and challenge us is really important, it's okay to have negative triggers, it's okay to have negative reactions, it's okay to have to struggle through those.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: but being transparent and communicating those struggles with your teams so that they understand where they come from when they see them.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: And their ability to communicate with you and to work with you to make it better so that you are more effective individually and collectively.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's where resilience, that's where the power and strength comes from in our leadership and in our overall team collaboration.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you have a great thing.
