- 1:08Speaker 3: heading into this week. Additionally, matters around the Western Conference

- 1:16Speaker 1: The Kings, and much more.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Jonathan Davis joining us on the show later on today.
- 1:23Speaker 3: But first things first, here's a little taste of what
- 1:26Speaker 3: happened this last week on calls from Everett fits you
- 1:29Speaker 3: and Alkiniski told it up top.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Montor shot breaks his stick back to Toleran. It scores
- 1:38Speaker 4: Ellie tolanand right as the power play expires, but it's
- 1:42Speaker 4: the kracket on the board. It's a free one at
- 1:45Speaker 4: Minton oiler lead Well.
- 1:46Speaker 5: I'll turn it out with a broken stick. Shot from
- 1:49Speaker 5: Montour at the point, but it gets down to Tolben
- 1:52Speaker 5: it he doesn't break his ship. It's stick on the
- 1:55Speaker 5: shot and it finds the back of the net. Three
- 1:57Speaker 5: one admotor.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Come Seattle into the defensive zone of the high slot
- 2:01Speaker 4: as Winterton forced off.
- 2:03Speaker 6: The puck now.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Turned over in front, backhead scars, Freddy Gadreau forces the turnover,
- 2:12Speaker 4: undresses Calvin pickered out in front and the Seattle crackhead
- 2:17Speaker 4: pulled back to it in one twenty seven seconds to
- 2:20Speaker 4: play in the first three to two Edmonton well.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Freddy Gudroau showing why it's so important to go on
- 2:25Speaker 5: the attack on the on the fore check, and it
- 2:27Speaker 5: was Leon Dreisidle in the hash marks right in front
- 2:30Speaker 5: of his own goal that gave up that puck to
- 2:32Speaker 5: Freddy Gudreaux. And it was a nice toe drag move
- 2:35Speaker 5: that he got skinnered to bite on. Came back against
- 2:38Speaker 5: the grain, buried it in three quarters of an open
- 2:40Speaker 5: necks lark.
- 2:41Speaker 4: It wings getting behind the defense, shot light side from
- 2:45Speaker 4: Raymond and a big.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Hit same cay I towing the cards.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Anybody hears turns away Raymond's thresher now everly to mar
- 2:52Speaker 4: shot Brandon Montour from the right circle, goes far down
- 3:05Speaker 4: and the Seattle crack and tie this game one one,
- 3:08Speaker 4: three four left.
- 3:10Speaker 5: In the first well, this place starts back in the
- 3:12Speaker 5: seattle out of the ice many years with a great.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Move to alleviate a redwind.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Checker feeds it up to him and every everybody grunts
- 3:19Speaker 5: gets the offensive. New line, creates some traffic, draates the
- 3:22Speaker 5: screen drops into Montour. Montour goes blacker side top shelf.
- 3:27Speaker 2: This title this game.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Titan Washington gets it off the board here side done,
- 3:31Speaker 4: Rick Whine, Larson fires start a laser from Larsen on
- 3:44Speaker 4: the right side, has a crack and Reid tie the
- 3:47Speaker 4: game thirteen sixteen to play.
- 3:49Speaker 6: The second two's aside well some.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Excellent four checking by the cracking at the other end
- 3:54Speaker 5: of the ice, Carja moves that buck back to dun
- 3:57Speaker 5: Dunn slided it over to Larsen and Larson with a
- 4:00Speaker 5: se n shot for three different players, gets his second
- 4:03Speaker 5: of the season miss Games title.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Tuber behind the cage in front of break it bick
- 4:08Speaker 1: same by Joey to card.
- 4:10Speaker 4: He goes down and slaps it out of mid air
- 4:14Speaker 4: with the glove. The cracket ice it the other way,
- 4:17Speaker 4: but my goodness, Joey's a card, a.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Goal saving save.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Nine twenty four, letting the second tie a Timen right
- 4:28Speaker 4: sign Tolvenen up.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Top shot Larsan sky.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Plong bomb from Adam Larson Reeds erected in by Chandler Stevenson.
- 4:46Speaker 6: He broke his stick on the shot.
- 4:48Speaker 4: The Seattle Crackett take a three two lead seven fifteen
- 4:53Speaker 4: to play.
- 4:54Speaker 5: In the second well, Chander Stevenson posts up with that
- 4:57Speaker 5: slot area Hashmarks presentsu stick. Carson gets that shot off
- 5:01Speaker 5: and it goes off the shaft, but Chandler Stevens stick
- 5:05Speaker 5: off the left ear of John Gibson boh and into
- 5:08Speaker 5: the natal Linger back again.
- 5:09Speaker 7: Patrick Kane walks in and scores two twenty nine a
- 5:20Speaker 7: play in the third.
- 5:22Speaker 4: The Red Wings take the lead late for to three
- 5:27Speaker 4: NHL goal for nine to seven for Patrick Cage.
- 5:32Speaker 3: So the bottom line the last two games matter off
- 5:34Speaker 3: at the previous five havn't gone exactly has planned the
- 5:38Speaker 3: Krack and dropping a nine to four defeat to the
- 5:41Speaker 3: Edmonton Oilers this last Thursday, where the experience was quite
- 5:45Speaker 3: combustible when you consider the Kracking going through goaltending and
- 5:49Speaker 3: penalty kill issues that night, and Edmonton icing as close
- 5:53Speaker 3: as a guest to a healthy lineup, especially on the
- 5:56Speaker 3: power play, and the Kraken finishing on the tough side
- 5:59Speaker 3: of his to read that night, nine goals giving up
- 6:02Speaker 3: new franchise record for one game, four power play goals
- 6:06Speaker 3: giving up, also a new franchise record for one game.
- 6:09Speaker 3: The Kraken were so close very next night this past
- 6:13Speaker 3: Saturday to snapping out of their recent skid, but a
- 6:16Speaker 3: pair of goals by Detroit in the latter stages. Each
- 6:19Speaker 3: a period two in period three were a game changer,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and Detroit eventually getting a four to three win on
- 6:25Speaker 3: Patrick Kane's game winning goal with two twenty to nine
- 6:29Speaker 3: left in regulation. Tough to take because the Kraken putting
- 6:33Speaker 3: together a pretty solid effort for much of the first
- 6:36Speaker 3: forty minutes, despite Detroit cashing in on their only man advantage.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So going to.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Bed, the Kraken ending the evening three points out of
- 6:45Speaker 3: the cut line in the Western Conference, their record eleven
- 6:48Speaker 3: nine and six, twenty eight points and three back each
- 6:52Speaker 3: of the Edmonton Oilers and the Utah Manmoth. After the
- 6:56Speaker 3: loss to Detroit, here's more reaction for up defenseman brand
- 7:00Speaker 3: A Montur.
- 7:00Speaker 8: As a defensive group, I mean, how much did the
- 7:03Speaker 8: other night just impact the group as a whole, and
- 7:06Speaker 8: how much how important was it to come back and
- 7:08Speaker 8: just try to do a better showing here.
- 7:11Speaker 9: I don't think it impacted really anything other than maybe
- 7:14Speaker 9: a little reset, get back to kind of basics. But yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 9: good game, good team over there, desperate team over there
- 7:21Speaker 9: that needs some wins as well, and you can't let
- 7:24Speaker 9: up one late at the late in the game.
- 7:26Speaker 2: There.
- 7:27Speaker 8: How do you feel the guys played overall? I mean
- 7:29Speaker 8: it looks I mean, guys came back, we took the lead.
- 7:31Speaker 8: It looked like you did a lot of what you
- 7:32Speaker 8: wanted to do, a.
- 7:33Speaker 9: Little bit more energy, you know, got in the for check,
- 7:35Speaker 9: a little bit more of zone time. Third period. Kind
- 7:38Speaker 9: of a little boring think on our side, but kind
- 7:43Speaker 9: of team that's pressing to get collect points as well,
- 7:45Speaker 9: and they found one late.
- 7:48Speaker 8: We've talked a lot about creating more scoring chances for
- 7:51Speaker 8: the team. It looks like lately you've been getting a
- 7:52Speaker 8: lot more puts to the net.
- 7:53Speaker 6: I mean, how much?
- 7:54Speaker 8: How much has the shoot first mentality?
- 7:56Speaker 9: Do you think me personally or team?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Uh?
- 7:59Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I guess we don't we you know,
- 8:01Speaker 9: we have a tough time scoring goals. No that we
- 8:04Speaker 9: can't score goals. It's just not going in or we're
- 8:06Speaker 9: just not getting enough to the net or making a
- 8:09Speaker 9: hard on our goaliet making hard on the d. So
- 8:11Speaker 9: the best way to kind of get out of that
- 8:14Speaker 9: is to shoot more pucks at net. And yeah, we're
- 8:16Speaker 9: trying to. We're trying to get on there. Last couple
- 8:18Speaker 9: of games, we've got a few more. But again, that's
- 8:21Speaker 9: still something that we can keep keep working on.
- 8:23Speaker 3: All right, Well, here we are with the Crack and
- 8:25Speaker 3: still hanging around this playoff mix, but after what was
- 8:27Speaker 3: a tough one to take on Saturday without further ado
- 8:31Speaker 3: ever it fits you, Al Kadisky here for our roundtable.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Jonathan Davis for Serious XM NHL Network ready to be
- 8:39Speaker 3: joining us a little bit later on here for an
- 8:41Speaker 3: outlook of the Western Conference teams on this schedule this week.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Here.
- 8:44Speaker 3: But I mean, guys, let's first just get into it
- 8:46Speaker 3: from this past week and just get right into the
- 8:48Speaker 3: deep end. And I'll kind of categorize this from two
- 8:52Speaker 3: places shout outs and then concerns. And I'll begin here
- 8:57Speaker 3: with this because for all intents and purposes, is you
- 9:00Speaker 3: take that Thursday game and just throw it out the window.
- 9:04Speaker 3: It was a low point onlike maybe any other. So
- 9:07Speaker 3: a lot of this, from what I'm looking at, is
- 9:09Speaker 3: more geared to more focus towards Saturday against the Red Wings.
- 9:13Speaker 3: So my shoutouts here to begin with the second period
- 9:16Speaker 3: on Saturday, and even going back a little bit into
- 9:19Speaker 3: the first barad it showed that the Krack and were
- 9:21Speaker 3: in control of this and against a very skilled team
- 9:25Speaker 3: and a team that can make a sweat defensively any
- 9:28Speaker 3: given night, and I think for the body of work
- 9:31Speaker 3: that they have built up trying to stay away from
- 9:35Speaker 3: the penalties. That was a big issue of course early
- 9:38Speaker 3: in the game, and it was a carryover from Edmonton.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Five on five play looked fantastic, and then they found
- 9:44Speaker 3: a way to put their foot on the gas pedal
- 9:46Speaker 3: and finding ways to get offense from their defense, and
- 9:50Speaker 3: it clearly showed that Detroit was giving them point shots
- 9:53Speaker 3: and the Kraken kept going right back.
- 9:55Speaker 1: To that well over and over and over.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Secondly, I think for me is Lane Lambert and he
- 10:01Speaker 3: made a tough decision sitting Jamie Alexiak, but it's becoming
- 10:05Speaker 3: clear there are no favorites on this team, and if
- 10:08Speaker 3: you have to sit, you sit, and that's called accountability.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I mean, Alexiak's a pro. He's not the first VET
- 10:15Speaker 3: in this league, of course, to take a seat in
- 10:17Speaker 3: the press box and a situation like this, and the
- 10:19Speaker 3: odds say that he'll be better off here for this,
- 10:22Speaker 3: but yet it sends a crucial message here, I think
- 10:24Speaker 3: to the rest of this entire team as far as
- 10:26Speaker 3: what Lane Lambert wants to set in place. My third
- 10:30Speaker 3: shout out here for this week is puck play. I
- 10:33Speaker 3: thought it was much better for Saturday, more shot attempts
- 10:36Speaker 3: as well, less one and done's and there was a
- 10:39Speaker 3: shooter's mentality which got better as the game went along,
- 10:42Speaker 3: but then unfortunately dried up in period three. My concerns
- 10:46Speaker 3: and I'll just get through this year to clear the
- 10:47Speaker 3: floor for you guys. First off, the Thursday clunker, because
- 10:51Speaker 3: goaltending and special teams had a rough night for the
- 10:54Speaker 3: Ages and has cleared the crack and knew what they
- 10:56Speaker 3: had to do to basically get out of the gate
- 10:57Speaker 3: and respond here for Saturday. Secondly, rush chances at the
- 11:02Speaker 3: wrong time against Detroit, and it was late in period two,
- 11:06Speaker 3: late in period three, and this came back to haunt them.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Third the penalty kill. They're still in one right now.
- 11:13Speaker 3: It's clear something's very amiss and they're letting too many
- 11:16Speaker 3: passes get through the box through the interior. But it
- 11:19Speaker 3: also puts on a strain I think for not taking
- 11:21Speaker 3: a penalty which can affect teams of five on five.
- 11:24Speaker 3: That's my concern right there. The Kraken, we're good at
- 11:27Speaker 3: that for the most part. On Saturday, but you've got
- 11:30Speaker 3: to be good at this again, coming up here against
- 11:33Speaker 3: Minnesota where they own the ninth best power play in
- 11:35Speaker 3: the entire NHL.
- 11:36Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a lot.
- 11:37Speaker 4: That's a lot to digest. I mean, I think you're
- 11:40Speaker 4: spot on. I think for me, the shout out that
- 11:43Speaker 4: I will give is just I think Saturday as a whole,
- 11:49Speaker 4: stopping at the result. You know, they needed a bounce
- 11:53Speaker 4: back from Edmonton. I like the game they played against
- 11:57Speaker 4: the Wings. It was a heartbreaker. You know, Patrick Kine
- 12:01Speaker 4: is as good of a goal scorer as we've seen
- 12:02Speaker 4: in our generation. You know, he's he's scored a million
- 12:06Speaker 4: of those type of goals and eighty third career game
- 12:10Speaker 4: winning goal.
- 12:11Speaker 2: For that one.
- 12:11Speaker 6: So but yeah, man, you know this week was it was.
- 12:16Speaker 4: It was a frustrating week for a variety of reasons.
- 12:20Speaker 4: I think, you know, Alan and I were talking about this,
- 12:23Speaker 4: anytime you put up four you should win the game,
- 12:27Speaker 4: unless you gave up nine. And I think Jordan Ebery
- 12:29Speaker 4: pretty much said all of that in his media availed
- 12:32Speaker 4: before the Detroit game.
- 12:33Speaker 6: But no, I like the puck play this week.
- 12:36Speaker 4: I like the response in in the second period, But
- 12:40Speaker 4: I think overall the game I Also, I'm gonna give
- 12:43Speaker 4: a special shoutout to Vince Done, who are going to
- 12:45Speaker 4: revisit in my in my three Stars week, I'm gonna
- 12:49Speaker 4: I'm gonna give a shout out.
- 12:50Speaker 6: To Vince Done because.
- 12:53Speaker 4: For the first time, I think in a couple of games,
- 12:57Speaker 4: he stood up for for his team. And I'm not
- 13:03Speaker 4: saying he hasn't done it. I'm not calling him out
- 13:07Speaker 4: in particular, but there have been a number of occasions
- 13:11Speaker 4: in the last handful of games where Berkeley Catton, where
- 13:15Speaker 4: Freddy Gadreau, a handful of others have been taken the
- 13:19Speaker 4: task by other teams, and the Kraken didn't have the
- 13:26Speaker 4: physical response that I think they should have had. I'll
- 13:30Speaker 4: go back to the Saturday game against Edmonton, right, say
- 13:33Speaker 4: what you want about Darnol Nurse and Marshmitt and all
- 13:36Speaker 4: that other stuff that was.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Going on and on Saturday.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Off about it last Saturday.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and I know I went off on it last week,
- 13:42Speaker 4: but it's like, you know, where was that in the
- 13:44Speaker 4: second period? I didn't need that in the third period.
- 13:46Speaker 4: So we're gonna chase Darno Nurse. We're gonna go around
- 13:50Speaker 4: and do all that.
- 13:51Speaker 6: Tiki tac stuff.
- 13:52Speaker 4: But when Freddy Gadroau gets two handed into the wall,
- 13:56Speaker 4: when Berkeley Catton gets plastered against the boards and there's
- 14:00Speaker 4: no response, that was bothersome to me.
- 14:03Speaker 6: That's a concern to me.
- 14:04Speaker 4: So I'm going to give Vince Dunn, you know, a
- 14:07Speaker 4: shout out for in that game against Detroit, trying to
- 14:12Speaker 4: mix it up and trying to be a shift disturber, as.
- 14:16Speaker 6: We like to say.
- 14:18Speaker 4: So those are my thoughts following the last couple of games.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'll just add onto that too. You know,
- 14:24Speaker 5: the Vince Done standing up for Jordan Everley after he
- 14:26Speaker 5: took an elbow to the face. You know, Vince Dunn
- 14:30Speaker 5: didn't fight, didn't spare it, didn't take a penalty, but
- 14:33Speaker 5: he responded right away. And I think as a player
- 14:36Speaker 5: on an opposing team, if you know that someone's coming
- 14:40Speaker 5: for you, if you do something on a line in
- 14:42Speaker 5: this case it was Vince Done, guess what, you're less
- 14:45Speaker 5: less likely to do. It doesn't mean it's not going
- 14:46Speaker 5: to happen, but you're less likely to do it. Now
- 14:49Speaker 5: the opposite, It's also true if there is no response,
- 14:52Speaker 5: then guess what. All twenty guys on the team, they're
- 14:54Speaker 5: all tough guys. Everybody's a tough guy because they know
- 14:57Speaker 5: they can be a tough guy, and so other teams
- 15:00Speaker 5: need to know that there will be a response if
- 15:02Speaker 5: they step out a line, and I don't think right
- 15:04Speaker 5: now that's the case. So yeah, I agree with the
- 15:07Speaker 5: kudos to Vince Done. I think the other thing about
- 15:10Speaker 5: the game against Detroit, the four to three loss, is
- 15:14Speaker 5: this time there were no self inflicted wounds, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 5: not the last Edmonton game that won.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Before that.
- 15:21Speaker 5: We saw bad changes, we saw bad penalties, selfy neutral zone.
- 15:26Speaker 10: Players couldn't catch a pass. It was very sloppy. Yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 10: it wasn't that in that loss. So, you know, Mike,
- 15:34Speaker 10: you and I talked about this in the post game.
- 15:36Speaker 10: I guess, you know, maybe on paper, a step forward.
- 15:40Speaker 10: Obviously the result is the same, a loss in regulation,
- 15:42Speaker 10: but a step forward. I think to make that next step,
- 15:46Speaker 10: they're going to have to get this special team's thing
- 15:48Speaker 10: sorted out. And again I'm not saying you're turning it
- 15:50Speaker 10: into a twenty twenty five percent power play overnight and
- 15:54Speaker 10: one hundred percent on the penalty kill, but you've got
- 15:56Speaker 10: to start working your way back up the standings right
- 15:59Speaker 10: now at the bottom with the penalty kills. So something's
- 16:02Speaker 10: got to change there. Ros that will be a weak
- 16:04Speaker 10: spot going forward.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Yeah, the you know the power play, It's funny you
- 16:08Speaker 4: say that because I'm gonna use I'll use Detroit Edmonton
- 16:12Speaker 4: clearly because they're the last three teams that the crack
- 16:14Speaker 4: in the three games they've had. You've got Minnesota coming
- 16:17Speaker 4: in here. You've got the La Kings coming in here
- 16:19Speaker 4: as well, and then you go to Utah. You've got
- 16:22Speaker 4: some really good skill on the teams that you're about
- 16:25Speaker 4: to face and that you have faced. And I think
- 16:28Speaker 4: the biggest difference that I've noticed between Seattle's power play
- 16:32Speaker 4: and the other power plays are that the Red Wings
- 16:36Speaker 4: and the Oilers they are zipping that puck around it is,
- 16:40Speaker 4: they're stretching out the PK. It is scene passes, rink wide,
- 16:45Speaker 4: dot to dot, back door tap ins.
- 16:48Speaker 6: You know.
- 16:48Speaker 4: The the Kraken PK seemed just to be in a
- 16:52Speaker 4: blender half the time. And then so I'm looking at
- 16:55Speaker 4: those power plays and yes, you give credit to Connor
- 16:58Speaker 4: McDavid and Lean drys and Dylan Larkin, Maurice Sider.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You've got to break it to.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Break it, You've got a number of high skill guys
- 17:08Speaker 4: that let's frank, let's say it.
- 17:10Speaker 6: I'm not I'm not throwing smoke here, I'm not throwing
- 17:14Speaker 6: shade and don't have those guys. I get it.
- 17:17Speaker 4: But when you see just the speed that other team's
- 17:21Speaker 4: power plays operate with, the crispness of their passes, the
- 17:25Speaker 4: sharpness of their system, you know their their ability to
- 17:31Speaker 4: get pucks through. That for me has been the biggest
- 17:37Speaker 4: glaring thing that I've noticed about the Kraken power play
- 17:42Speaker 4: versus the other power plays that we've seen in the
- 17:45Speaker 4: last hanfle of games.
- 17:47Speaker 3: I want to touch on the penalty kill because often
- 17:49Speaker 3: it's also said that your goal is got to be
- 17:51Speaker 3: your best PK or now that goes hand in hand
- 17:54Speaker 3: structure and goaltending on top of that, but on the
- 17:58Speaker 3: overall scale, with Joey Decore, I thought into the second
- 18:01Speaker 3: period he was building a strong, strong case against the
- 18:04Speaker 3: Red Wings for a redemption game. That third goal he
- 18:08Speaker 3: gave up to James Van Riemsdyke, maybe he wants that
- 18:11Speaker 3: one back. Patrick Kaine scores off the rush wide open,
- 18:15Speaker 3: beat some gloves side as well. So at this point,
- 18:18Speaker 3: back from injury, what's our reaction to Joey to court
- 18:20Speaker 3: at this stage.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought that he had a great save on
- 18:24Speaker 5: the drinket opportunity. Highlight real save.
- 18:27Speaker 1: That's phenomenal.
- 18:28Speaker 2: It was phenomenal.
- 18:29Speaker 5: And to your point, Mike, I thought that, yep, he's
- 18:32Speaker 5: going to have one of his games here and put
- 18:35Speaker 5: his team in a position to win. And let's be honest,
- 18:37Speaker 5: he did you know, three goals or less, you're putting
- 18:39Speaker 5: your team in a position to win. And unfortunately the
- 18:42Speaker 5: Crack can give up that fourth goal. But I think
- 18:45Speaker 5: at least one or two of the goals. I think
- 18:47Speaker 5: Joey to the court is going to look at tape
- 18:49Speaker 5: and think I probably should have had that one or
- 18:51Speaker 5: played that one differently. The van reems that goal. You know,
- 18:55Speaker 5: we looked at the repail a little bit. I'm not
- 18:57Speaker 5: a goalie. I've never played goal, but it looked odd
- 18:59Speaker 5: to me that Joey Decord had his right knee down
- 19:04Speaker 5: and it was that side of the net that Van
- 19:07Speaker 5: Riemsyke put the puck in.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I don't know why that and you went down.
- 19:10Speaker 5: I don't know if he was thinking about pushing across
- 19:12Speaker 5: to try and make the save if the pass got through,
- 19:15Speaker 5: but that may have opened up enough daylight for Van
- 19:18Speaker 5: Raamske to put that puck in. Again, that's my non
- 19:21Speaker 5: goalie view of it. I'd be interested in his thoughts
- 19:24Speaker 5: on that. Probably off the air.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think Joey coming back. He's getting
- 19:30Speaker 4: back to the form. And anytime a goalie has an injury,
- 19:34Speaker 4: you never know how that's going to impact him, right,
- 19:38Speaker 4: I mean, goaltenders are they're quarterbacks, They're.
- 19:41Speaker 6: They're the most scrutinized. They're the ones.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Who were in the spotlight at all times, you know,
- 19:46Speaker 4: because they're always on the ice, So you never know
- 19:50Speaker 4: what lingering effects can come with injuries. You know, there
- 19:54Speaker 4: have been number numerous times throughout you know, the history
- 19:58Speaker 4: of this league where you know, yeah, a goalie is
- 20:01Speaker 4: well enough to play, and and but is he Is
- 20:04Speaker 4: he one hundred percent? So not suggesting that Joey isn't
- 20:08Speaker 4: one hundred percent, but you never know what could happen
- 20:10Speaker 4: or what's been happening. But I think that for him,
- 20:13Speaker 4: you know, we're slowly starting to see the flashes of
- 20:16Speaker 4: where the of the of the consistent greatness that we
- 20:21Speaker 4: saw a lot of over the last couple of seasons,
- 20:24Speaker 4: and it takes some time. So I mean, Joey now
- 20:26Speaker 4: has started UH for five games in a row and
- 20:31Speaker 4: six of the last seven now for Seattle.
- 20:34Speaker 6: So I wonder with Minnesota in here tonight or.
- 20:37Speaker 2: LA on.
- 20:39Speaker 4: UH Wednesday, I wonder maybe if Grubauer will get one
- 20:43Speaker 4: of those two games, we'll see, you know, Ley Lambert,
- 20:45Speaker 4: as is the case with a lot of coaches, very
- 20:47Speaker 4: tight lipped on the goaltending schedule in the calendar. But
- 20:52Speaker 4: you know, I'm he's still the number one on this team.
- 20:55Speaker 4: I think, yes, he's probably had some down games, but
- 20:59Speaker 4: I think we view them as down because Joey Decord
- 21:05Speaker 4: sets such a high bar for himself. These last couple
- 21:09Speaker 4: of seasons, Joey Decord has been a large part of
- 21:13Speaker 4: the reason why Seattle has been in the playoff conversation
- 21:18Speaker 4: until you know, later in the year then they fell off.
- 21:21Speaker 4: So I think our expectation and our standard of Joey
- 21:24Speaker 4: Decord rightfully, so you know, you're a five million dollar
- 21:27Speaker 4: goalie is high, and I think anytime you see like,
- 21:31Speaker 4: oh wow, you know he's I don't want to say struggling,
- 21:33Speaker 4: but he's not making scorpion saves every other night, like.
- 21:36Speaker 6: We're used to seeing. It's it's it's.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Maybe a bit of a bit of a desert mirage,
- 21:42Speaker 4: if you will. He's still a good goalie, but because
- 21:45Speaker 4: he's not winning every single night anymore, you're saying to yourself, Oh,
- 21:49Speaker 4: what's going on.
- 21:50Speaker 6: I still think he's the number one on this team
- 21:52Speaker 6: and he's getting back to that level.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Now. I'll let you take it away after this year.
- 21:56Speaker 3: But also wouldn't surprise me to see Philip Grubauer against
- 21:59Speaker 3: Utah because he looked great and had two wins against
- 22:02Speaker 3: him last season as well.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's the whole question, right, And we
- 22:06Speaker 5: talked about this in the booth before the last two games.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Is after that nine to four loss to Edmonton, would
- 22:11Speaker 5: we see Joey to court again? I thought we would
- 22:13Speaker 5: see Philip Grubauer, But the argument was presented, you give
- 22:17Speaker 5: your number one, Joey's your number one. You give your
- 22:19Speaker 5: number one an opportunity to redeem himself.
- 22:21Speaker 10: Yes.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Yeah, So he goes out and the team loses to
- 22:25Speaker 5: Edmonton in that game, So then you think, okay, probably
- 22:27Speaker 5: going to see Groenauer for Detroit again. Joey starts again,
- 22:31Speaker 5: So I'm o for too. Over the last two games
- 22:33Speaker 5: on who I think might be starting. I'm not sure
- 22:36Speaker 5: if Grubauer will go against Minnesota or not, but again
- 22:40Speaker 5: I'm going to say it wouldn't surprise me if he did.
- 22:43Speaker 3: We had a top line that remained consistent, and after
- 22:46Speaker 3: that everything else shuffled on Saturday and we didn't even
- 22:49Speaker 3: get the defensive core here with alexiak out as a
- 22:52Speaker 3: healthy scratch.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But mccam, ben year Zebralee, you see something there.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And I want to touch on Maddy later on here
- 22:57Speaker 3: because this is I think a very important part of
- 22:58Speaker 3: this conversation with his growth and where the crack and
- 23:01Speaker 3: are at here for this season. Ellie tolven and Chandler
- 23:05Speaker 3: Stevenson Coppocco, then Mason March meant Freddie Gadreau, Berkeley Catton
- 23:11Speaker 3: and some shuffling went around a little bit there, but
- 23:13Speaker 3: then he had Ty Cartier, Shane Wright, Ryan Winterton with
- 23:17Speaker 3: limited exposure, still look pretty effective and pretty solid. And
- 23:22Speaker 3: a spoiler alert here, Krchi may be coming up in
- 23:25Speaker 3: one of our three stars at the very end of
- 23:27Speaker 3: this here for this drop. So as far as the
- 23:30Speaker 3: forwards are concerned, what did we make out of the
- 23:32Speaker 3: lineup changes?
- 23:34Speaker 2: Love the three star teas. It's very well done.
- 23:38Speaker 5: I think this is just going to be something that
- 23:40Speaker 5: we as broadcasters need to get used to, is that
- 23:43Speaker 5: Leid Lambert is not afraid to make an in game
- 23:46Speaker 5: adjustment on a regular basis.
- 23:48Speaker 2: I mean, there.
- 23:49Speaker 5: Aren't too many games over the course of the first
- 23:51Speaker 5: twenty six where I think all four Ford lines have
- 23:54Speaker 5: stayed in tact throughout the game. I mean, there's certainly
- 23:56Speaker 5: a lot fewer of those games than games where there
- 23:58Speaker 5: hasn't been adjustments. I just think that he's okay with,
- 24:02Speaker 5: you know, making those tweaks in game, hoping to squeeze
- 24:06Speaker 5: a little more juice out of his lines. And as
- 24:08Speaker 5: far as the lineup goes in that that Detroit game, yeah, I.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Mean I liked, you know, writ and Gadreu in the middle.
- 24:14Speaker 5: I'm that bottom six, and I thought Coco was going
- 24:18Speaker 5: to fit in well with that.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Tolbyn and Stevenson line. Stevenson such a great playmaker.
- 24:22Speaker 5: I thought, you know that both Coco and Tolbden would
- 24:25Speaker 5: get some great opportunities for shots on goal. I know
- 24:28Speaker 5: Coco's only had one since he came back into the lineup,
- 24:31Speaker 5: and he's the kind of guy that should be scoring
- 24:33Speaker 5: every couple of games and grabbing, you know, especially in
- 24:37Speaker 5: the top six multiplay games every few games as well.
- 24:40Speaker 5: So I know he wants more personally out of his game.
- 24:42Speaker 5: I thought that that line might be the right combination
- 24:45Speaker 5: to do it.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I like, I liked the look of that line.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Toilvan and Steven Coppo Coppo Coco. They've got a little
- 24:53Speaker 4: bit of everything.
- 24:54Speaker 6: I think on that line. I have zero issue.
- 25:00Speaker 4: With Lane Lambert sometimes blending up the lines. I love
- 25:05Speaker 4: the game within the game, and I think that is
- 25:08Speaker 4: the sign of a coach that's active, that's dialed in.
- 25:13Speaker 4: He sees things that maybe aren't looking right, or maybe
- 25:17Speaker 4: the crackheader being exposed in this area. And you've got
- 25:21Speaker 4: the pieces to plug and play, and this lineup lends itself.
- 25:26Speaker 6: To do just that.
- 25:27Speaker 4: You've got a number of guys I think everyone in
- 25:30Speaker 4: this lineup, I mean maybe outside of your top line,
- 25:33Speaker 4: everyone in this lineup can play everywhere else. Right, I
- 25:38Speaker 4: would feel comfortable with car Cha, right, Ryan Winterton as
- 25:43Speaker 4: your second line. I would feel comfortable with Marchmint, Gaudreau
- 25:47Speaker 4: and Catton as your second line.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Right.
- 25:49Speaker 4: I think that everyone on this roster can play anywhere.
- 25:54Speaker 4: But I will say the one thing that and I
- 25:56Speaker 4: gotta I gotta phrase this carefully because I'm not trying
- 25:59Speaker 4: to from a position of criticism or or combativeness. But
- 26:08Speaker 4: I think the one thing that I'd like to see
- 26:11Speaker 4: more of is maybe more consistency for Shane Wright and
- 26:16Speaker 4: Berkeley Catton, especially young players in the league. You're trying
- 26:21Speaker 4: to see what you have with Shane Wright. And I
- 26:23Speaker 4: know I'm starting to sound like the Internet and the
- 26:26Speaker 4: people that are like Shane Wright's ally got eight minutes
- 26:29Speaker 4: in the fourth line tonight, Yeah, play right more.
- 26:32Speaker 6: I get it. I know.
- 26:33Speaker 4: I know that I'm coming off as a fan right now,
- 26:35Speaker 4: and please to our loyal listeners forgive.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Me, But but I don't know.
- 26:39Speaker 4: I would like to see Shane Wright in that in
- 26:43Speaker 4: a spot for five consecutive games. I'd like to see
- 26:46Speaker 4: Berkeley Catten in a spot for for five consecutive games
- 26:51Speaker 4: and see what you have with them.
- 26:53Speaker 6: But outside of that, I think that the.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Lines that that we're seeing every night, I'm fine with them.
- 27:01Speaker 4: The defense has never been the issue. The personnel. I
- 27:04Speaker 4: think if you look at the crack and defensive personnel,
- 27:06Speaker 4: it got probably one of the best decours in the conference.
- 27:10Speaker 4: But you know, it's just you're trying to find that
- 27:14Speaker 4: mix every night that works. But I think because you've
- 27:17Speaker 4: got so many versatile players in your bottom nine forward group,
- 27:25Speaker 4: it can be hard to find a consistent mix.
- 27:28Speaker 3: The issues kind of override maybe the personnel matters here
- 27:32Speaker 3: with him being on and we saw this a long
- 27:34Speaker 3: time before he got hurt. But Jaden Schwartz, how much
- 27:38Speaker 3: does this team miss him? How do they react here
- 27:40Speaker 3: for this week?
- 27:40Speaker 5: As far as the lineup, yeah, I think you're really
- 27:44Speaker 5: seeing the impact of having seventeen nine of the lineup.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Special teams, physicality, you know, NetFront, presence, all of the
- 27:52Speaker 5: above are impacted with him out of the lineup, and
- 27:56Speaker 5: you think, well, it's going to give other guys opportunities
- 27:58Speaker 5: to do the same that that gay just hasn't been
- 28:00Speaker 5: filled since since he's been out, So you're not gonna
- 28:04Speaker 5: You're likely not going to see him for the remainder
- 28:06Speaker 5: of December. You know, when in January he's back, who knows,
- 28:10Speaker 5: but you know they're going to have to continue to
- 28:14Speaker 5: look for ways to try and solve the missing piece
- 28:17Speaker 5: of Jaden Schwartz.
- 28:19Speaker 4: There is a there is a certain calmness about Jaden Schwartz.
- 28:23Speaker 6: When he's on the ice, when he's on the.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Bench, he's in the locker room, you know. And I
- 28:28Speaker 4: think I said this last week too. It's almost like
- 28:32Speaker 4: everyone just gives this, all right, bro, kind of here
- 28:38Speaker 4: we go, right, And I think you're missing You're missing.
- 28:42Speaker 6: That al Al loves. I love the visual that Al gives.
- 28:46Speaker 6: You need a guy that's willing to go to the.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Net and score a goal off his face, and Schwartz
- 28:52Speaker 4: is a guy who will do that.
- 28:54Speaker 6: Never mind the power play. You're missing that net front guy.
- 28:58Speaker 4: You're you're missing a player that I think adds that
- 29:03Speaker 4: little extra for everyone else in the lineup. I think
- 29:07Speaker 4: he is a player that people will say, oh, if
- 29:10Speaker 4: he can do it, I can do it. If he's
- 29:12Speaker 4: doing it, then I'm going to the corners. If he's
- 29:15Speaker 4: going to the front of the that blocking shots, then
- 29:17Speaker 4: I'm gonna go block shots. And you miss that piece
- 29:21Speaker 4: of your of your identity. With Swartz out of the lineup,
- 29:25Speaker 4: and and Alan and I were talking, this also presents
- 29:27Speaker 4: an opportunity for other players to step.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Up in that role.
- 29:31Speaker 4: I know, Yannie Newman was a name that you know,
- 29:34Speaker 4: I'd love to see him use his frame and his
- 29:37Speaker 4: size and add a bit more of a power physical
- 29:42Speaker 4: element to his game. Coppolcaco, I know that it's been
- 29:45Speaker 4: a rough go for him this season, but again that
- 29:48Speaker 4: size of his you know, if he can safely and
- 29:52Speaker 4: healthily go to the dirty areas and and and add
- 29:58Speaker 4: a little bit more of that of that, you know
- 30:00Speaker 4: what you to your game to his game. I like
- 30:04Speaker 4: where the Kraken are going, but you do miss so
- 30:08Speaker 4: much with Schwartz that might not always show up on
- 30:10Speaker 4: the score sheet.
- 30:11Speaker 5: I'll just add to that list Ellie told you to lead. Yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 5: team sixty three hits, Mason Marshman sixty five two twelve.
- 30:16Speaker 5: There's a couple of guys that should be in front
- 30:18Speaker 5: of the net every single time they're on the ice.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Well, certainly, when you go back and think of who
- 30:22Speaker 3: you miss the most, it's guys who are closest to
- 30:25Speaker 3: your own identity. I mean, when you have a guy
- 30:27Speaker 3: out like Schwartz, who's a leader based on his experience,
- 30:30Speaker 3: who's a leader based on how he plays, you go
- 30:33Speaker 3: to the front of the net. That's where this team
- 30:35Speaker 3: has to live offensively. And not only that, but the
- 30:39Speaker 3: way that he's able to get pucks, clean up ice,
- 30:41Speaker 3: he makes smart plays. It fits this system here to
- 30:44Speaker 3: a t, which I mean, I think going back when
- 30:47Speaker 3: he was knocked out, of course, what do you know,
- 30:49Speaker 3: it was a play at the front of the net.
- 30:50Speaker 3: But you're kind of thinking, Okay, holds your breath right now,
- 30:54Speaker 3: because this is where it's going to get really, really
- 30:57Speaker 3: tough to fill that kind of hole. And you know,
- 30:59Speaker 3: it's one of those adversity moments that that this team
- 31:03Speaker 3: has to respond with. So I love what you mentioned,
- 31:06Speaker 3: Everett and the fact that it's gotta be next man
- 31:09Speaker 3: up here, and you have plenty of veterans, plenty of rookies,
- 31:12Speaker 3: especially Yannie Newman, who have got to find a way
- 31:15Speaker 3: not just to live offensively off his shot, but find
- 31:18Speaker 3: a way to also live right at the front of
- 31:19Speaker 3: the net.
- 31:20Speaker 1: This door is wide open now.
- 31:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna gush over Jaden Schwartz. Oh just
- 31:25Speaker 4: a little bit more. When I look at players in
- 31:27Speaker 4: this league that have been around for a while, they've
- 31:31Speaker 4: won Cups, they do the right things, and I cannot
- 31:36Speaker 4: think of a time in the five years now that
- 31:39Speaker 4: we've had Jaden Schwartz.
- 31:40Speaker 6: In our organization where I've said.
- 31:42Speaker 4: Man, he didn't look good tonight. Man I need more
- 31:46Speaker 4: from him. Man, he just doesn't have it tonight. I
- 31:49Speaker 4: cannot recall a single time ever saying that. And he
- 31:52Speaker 4: is a guy that does everything right. He does everything well.
- 31:58Speaker 4: He might not be great eight at anything in particular,
- 32:02Speaker 4: but he does everything so well and that's what makes
- 32:06Speaker 4: him a great player and the consummate pro.
- 32:10Speaker 6: Whatever you want to whatever you want.
- 32:12Speaker 4: To say, Jaden Schwartz, I think around the league is
- 32:17Speaker 4: probably one of the more underappreciated, not underrated, because I
- 32:22Speaker 4: think everyone knows his game, but I think underappreciated for
- 32:27Speaker 4: the value that he brings to a lineup.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Yeah, there's two things you can count on. One is
- 32:32Speaker 2: the is. The is the the effort.
- 32:34Speaker 5: Like you said, there's a lot of things well, but
- 32:36Speaker 5: the effort is going to be there every single game.
- 32:40Speaker 5: That leadership is the other thing. And I'll just add
- 32:44Speaker 5: you know, everybody wants to talk about details and jams.
- 32:46Speaker 5: Swartz is one of those guys where he knows what
- 32:49Speaker 5: the right details are, he knows how to execute those details,
- 32:53Speaker 5: and he will share those with other players making the
- 32:55Speaker 5: team better as well.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I remember last year I think Jaden Schwartz had a
- 33:00Speaker 4: a lengthy point drought and you could tell that he
- 33:03Speaker 4: was You could tell he was frustrated.
- 33:05Speaker 6: You could tell that he was.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Upset, but but you didn't he didn't let that shine
- 33:13Speaker 4: through in his play, you know.
- 33:16Speaker 6: And it was it was something it was two years ago.
- 33:18Speaker 4: I forget what it was, but there was a time
- 33:20Speaker 4: I remember when Schwartz had a lengthy point drought and
- 33:22Speaker 4: he wasn't scoring like he wanted to and all of that,
- 33:26Speaker 4: but he never let.
- 33:27Speaker 6: It get him down.
- 33:28Speaker 4: And he was still doing so many things to help
- 33:31Speaker 4: the team. I mean, if they were if they gave
- 33:33Speaker 4: out third assists, he probably would have had twelve of
- 33:36Speaker 4: them because of how he started plays and how he
- 33:38Speaker 4: helped break the puck into the zone, and and and
- 33:41Speaker 4: he would hit a guy and he would create the turnovers.
- 33:44Speaker 6: So again I'm talking in circles, but I just I.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Love the guy and I really appreciate what he does
- 33:50Speaker 4: and what he means and brings to this lineup.
- 33:53Speaker 3: I want to get to Maddy Beniers here. When you
- 33:57Speaker 3: look at the numbers, you first look at this, I
- 33:59Speaker 3: think in two different ways. Three goals in his first
- 34:02Speaker 3: twenty games. You may be looking for more out of
- 34:05Speaker 3: him defensively, he's looking dialed in. You're leading a SIS
- 34:09Speaker 3: guy as well on this team, and he right now
- 34:11Speaker 3: is tied with the team leading scoring with Jordan Eberley.
- 34:14Speaker 3: He's on pace for a fifty point season. Now you're
- 34:17Speaker 3: looking for more maybe as he gets older and older
- 34:19Speaker 3: and older, But as of right now, that is emerging
- 34:22Speaker 3: to be his second best output in his best season
- 34:24Speaker 3: since he won the Calder Trophy back in twenty twenty two,
- 34:28Speaker 3: twenty three. So what do we make out of Maddie's
- 34:31Speaker 3: progress so far this season?
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about this in the broadcast, Mike.
- 34:35Speaker 5: I've been real happy with Maddie's game from his own
- 34:40Speaker 5: blue line in this season. And I think that you know,
- 34:43Speaker 5: you do you say, well, does it make up for,
- 34:46Speaker 5: you know, the lack of scoring?
- 34:49Speaker 2: Maybe? Maybe not?
- 34:50Speaker 5: You know, I if he's playing in last year's system,
- 34:53Speaker 5: he's probably got a lot more goals, but his plus
- 34:55Speaker 5: minus probably looks worse because he's not as playing as
- 34:57Speaker 5: much defense. So, because this team has bought into this
- 35:01Speaker 5: defense first structure mentality, a guy like Manny Bneers is
- 35:05Speaker 5: not going to score as often. I just I truly
- 35:08Speaker 5: believe that. And it's not just Maddy. You bring any
- 35:10Speaker 5: top scorer in if they're going to play this style
- 35:12Speaker 5: of hockey, they're not going to score as much. And
- 35:15Speaker 5: some players don't like it. But as far as what
- 35:17Speaker 5: I can tell, everybody's bought into this system, and you
- 35:20Speaker 5: have to sacrifice a little bit to buy into it.
- 35:23Speaker 5: Maddy's fully bought into it. His his his stick work
- 35:28Speaker 5: along the wall, on the wall, his battles. He's coming
- 35:30Speaker 5: up with the puck more often. The Monteur goal last night,
- 35:35Speaker 5: he picked up the puck inside of his own blue line,
- 35:38Speaker 5: made a couple of dip backs, you know, shook off
- 35:40Speaker 5: his attacker, and then fed it out to every to
- 35:43Speaker 5: set that goal up. So that doesn't happen for Maddy
- 35:46Speaker 5: vaneers one two years ago.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I don't think. I think he gives that puck up
- 35:50Speaker 2: and that goal never happens.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I the fans side of me is screaming three goals?
- 35:57Speaker 6: What are we doing here?
- 35:58Speaker 4: But when you when you watch his game and you
- 36:02Speaker 4: see just how much he has matured and grown on
- 36:08Speaker 4: the ice, in the locker room, he's a leader. He's
- 36:10Speaker 4: a voice on that bench. You know, he he is
- 36:15Speaker 4: I genuinely believe that Matt eveniers Is is a top
- 36:20Speaker 4: two way forward definitely in the in the division, if
- 36:23Speaker 4: not the Western Conference already. And and and I think
- 36:28Speaker 4: you know, there's been a number of folks who are
- 36:30Speaker 4: who were giving him, you know, Dark Corse, uh, Dark
- 36:34Speaker 4: Corse Selki.
- 36:37Speaker 6: You know potential right this year.
- 36:39Speaker 4: So I love the way that Maddie's game has has evolved.
- 36:43Speaker 4: I love seeing how responsible he is. He is starting
- 36:47Speaker 4: to get in the mix a bit more. He's added
- 36:50Speaker 4: a little bit of a physical elements.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Gone next level now with him. I saw that the
- 36:54Speaker 1: other night.
- 36:55Speaker 4: And when I say physical element, I don't mean he's
- 36:58Speaker 4: getting in there trying to fight guy. But he's not
- 37:01Speaker 4: shying away from board battles. He's going into the corners.
- 37:04Speaker 4: He's not afraid to take a hit to make a play.
- 37:07Speaker 4: He spins off of guys. And you're right, you didn't
- 37:11Speaker 4: see that two years ago. So his hockey, IQ, the
- 37:14Speaker 4: way that he's played the game has has gotten so
- 37:17Speaker 4: much better. He has been a joy to watch. But
- 37:20Speaker 4: I'm gonna put my fan hat on and I'm like, Maddie.
- 37:23Speaker 6: I need more than three goals. I love you, I
- 37:25Speaker 6: need more but I get it.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I love that his game has become so complete, and
- 37:31Speaker 4: you're right, al in this system, you're going to sacrifice
- 37:34Speaker 4: a few things, you know, But I think that you know,
- 37:39Speaker 4: if we're talking first half pre Christmas Kraken MVP, I
- 37:45Speaker 4: mean Maddy Mniers is on that list for me.
- 37:47Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, And you know, as far as the fan goes, yeah,
- 37:51Speaker 5: that hat nearby, but I'll put it that imaginary fan
- 37:54Speaker 5: hat on. I would say, why can't he be both?
- 37:57Speaker 5: Why can't he be the two hundred foot center that
- 37:59Speaker 5: you have to become this year and still score goals?
- 38:01Speaker 5: That's what the fans want.
- 38:03Speaker 6: His last goal, I remember when was this.
- 38:06Speaker 4: This was back against Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago.
- 38:10Speaker 4: That goal he scored just a snipe from the circle.
- 38:13Speaker 4: Like you forget sometimes that Maddy Beniers has a really
- 38:17Speaker 4: good shot and you see it in practice, you know,
- 38:20Speaker 4: he he I remember last year he was working on
- 38:23Speaker 4: his release a lot after practice and trying to get
- 38:26Speaker 4: a fraction of a second quicker with his release. I'd
- 38:29Speaker 4: love to see him use that shot more and again
- 38:33Speaker 4: we've talked about it. Funneling pucks toward the net. Laine
- 38:36Speaker 4: Lambert has said multiple times on the record, off the record,
- 38:40Speaker 4: I want these guys to be more selfish.
- 38:42Speaker 6: I want guys to shoot the puck more.
- 38:44Speaker 4: And you know, the famous Michael Scott once said, you
- 38:48Speaker 4: miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take,
- 38:50Speaker 4: So listen, I want Maddie to start shooting the puck more.
- 38:54Speaker 4: But I'm with you. You know where he's grown so
- 38:58Speaker 4: much in his game is just so valuable for what
- 39:01Speaker 4: this team's trying to do.
- 39:03Speaker 1: I'm going to go down.
- 39:04Speaker 3: I'm going to go down this legendary player's resume as
- 39:09Speaker 3: far as point totals, which began more or less at
- 39:14Speaker 3: the prime of his career, when he began to win
- 39:17Speaker 3: and win successfully, thirty nine points, fifty two points, fifty seven,
- 39:22Speaker 3: sixty four, thirty two in a shortened year, sixty two,
- 39:27Speaker 3: fifty five, sixty eight, fifty three, sixty three, then seventy nine,
- 39:31Speaker 3: fifty six, et cetera. That player was Patrice Bergeron, And
- 39:36Speaker 3: that's the player Matty Beineer's wants to be.
- 39:38Speaker 6: That's his that's his favorite player.
- 39:40Speaker 4: That is to a lot of folks, compare want to
- 39:45Speaker 4: compare him to being from Boston. Listen, if you're telling
- 39:48Speaker 4: me the Cracking I've got Patrice Berger on two point.
- 39:50Speaker 6: Oh, I am probably fine with that.
- 39:52Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, And you know, going back to that comment
- 39:55Speaker 5: you made about his shot, his shot release. If you're
- 39:59Speaker 5: listening to this right now, now you're saying, I don't
- 40:00Speaker 5: know what you mean by shot release. What's a fast one?
- 40:03Speaker 5: What's what's what's a slow one? Fast one? Watch the
- 40:06Speaker 5: game winning goal by Patrick k last night. Yeah, he
- 40:10Speaker 5: receives the puck and not in the best position. He
- 40:12Speaker 5: actually has to choke up on his stick a little bit.
- 40:14Speaker 2: But from the.
- 40:15Speaker 5: Time that puck hits the blade of his stick until
- 40:17Speaker 5: the time he gets it off, it's barely a second.
- 40:20Speaker 2: And I think when.
- 40:21Speaker 5: You've got to release like that, you don't have to
- 40:23Speaker 5: have the hardest shot, but if it's accurate and it's quick,
- 40:26Speaker 5: you're going to score a ton of goals. And I
- 40:27Speaker 5: know that's what Maddie Deniers is working on.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, Fitz is gonna go take a break.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Let's go to the Beacon Plumbing hotline right now. Time
- 40:34Speaker 3: to bring on our special guest, his debut here on
- 40:36Speaker 3: Crack and Weekly. His name is Jonathan Davis, a Vson
- 40:40Speaker 3: hockey betting analysts You can also hear him as a
- 40:43Speaker 3: correspondent on Sirius XM. NHL Network Radio does some fantastic
- 40:47Speaker 3: work based on the West Coast. Jonathan, great to have you.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Thank you for joining us here. And I first want
- 40:53Speaker 3: to dive into this. The krack And will be out
- 40:55Speaker 3: there before the holiday break in Los Angeles, and it
- 40:58Speaker 3: takes me back here. It's a growing up in the
- 41:00Speaker 3: Glendora area where sometimes I mean managed shorts weather on
- 41:03Speaker 3: Christmas Day, I mean, Jonathan, for the trip out there.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Do you think that we're going to be backing light?
- 41:08Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, look, I just before we started this interview,
- 41:11Speaker 11: I was just out of the beach and watching all
- 41:13Speaker 11: everybody surfing. It is you know, for a guy it
- 41:17Speaker 11: was born in Montreal and raised in Toronto. I made
- 41:21Speaker 11: the right decision a long time ago to trade snow
- 41:24Speaker 11: for beach.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Uh.
- 41:26Speaker 3: You take me back, and I think you nail the
- 41:29Speaker 3: secret here to success. Spend less money on clothes and
- 41:32Speaker 3: more on experiences. Let's get down to the this part
- 41:37Speaker 3: of the week here, the crack And are playing in
- 41:39Speaker 3: a stretch of eleven games and twenty days. It's getting
- 41:41Speaker 3: busy and this could have a major effect on their
- 41:44Speaker 3: playoff fortunes and they're still trying to figure out figure
- 41:48Speaker 3: things after going winless in five in a row. Now
- 41:51Speaker 3: they can play defense, their goaltending has been mostly dialed in,
- 41:55Speaker 3: but they're experiencing a ton of issues as far as
- 41:58Speaker 3: offensive generation, pedally kill issues. Also on top of that,
- 42:03Speaker 3: when you consider the overall scope of the season, So
- 42:06Speaker 3: Jonathan to you, what's weighing on their playoff hopes from
- 42:09Speaker 3: both sides when you consider how their strains stack up
- 42:12Speaker 3: against the rest of the league and what they're needing
- 42:15Speaker 3: to level up with.
- 42:17Speaker 11: Well, I mean, look, the biggest problem that they face
- 42:19Speaker 11: is that they're offensively challenged.
- 42:21Speaker 12: I mean, you know, Matty Veneers and Jordan Everley with.
- 42:25Speaker 11: Sixteen points lead the team, and that puts them about
- 42:28Speaker 11: one hundred and forty first in scoring in the NHL.
- 42:32Speaker 11: So if you're the opposition, you know, and you're putting,
- 42:35Speaker 11: you know, you've got all the lines on your on
- 42:37Speaker 11: the whiteboard of your you know, the cracking there's not
- 42:41Speaker 11: a big heavy game planning issue.
- 42:44Speaker 12: So I think you know.
- 42:46Speaker 11: Then you know, not having a game breaker really hurts
- 42:49Speaker 11: the cracking. And for the early part of the season,
- 42:52Speaker 11: you know, they were able to do it because whether
- 42:54Speaker 11: it was Joey deccord or Philip Grubauer or Matt Murray,
- 42:58Speaker 11: they were getting saved and they were able to stay
- 43:01Speaker 11: in games.
- 43:02Speaker 12: And right now, you know, they've gone.
- 43:04Speaker 11: You know, it wasn't long ago that they were what
- 43:06Speaker 11: top too or at least top five in goals against,
- 43:10Speaker 11: and now they're sitting you know, I think around fifteen.
- 43:13Speaker 11: So if you can't score and now you're starting to
- 43:17Speaker 11: give up goals, it makes it really tough for this
- 43:21Speaker 11: cracking team that's been able. You know, look, their success
- 43:25Speaker 11: early on is being able to get games to overtime
- 43:28Speaker 11: and pick it up.
- 43:29Speaker 12: That that loser point, there's no I mean, you can't
- 43:32Speaker 12: hide behind that.
- 43:32Speaker 11: So you know, for this front office, they've got to
- 43:36Speaker 11: find a way to get themselves more guys that can
- 43:40Speaker 11: can score.
- 43:41Speaker 12: Because when you look.
- 43:42Speaker 11: Back to you know, look when they that year that
- 43:44Speaker 11: they took you know, they knocked out Colorado, there are
- 43:47Speaker 11: six guys that are no longer on that team were
- 43:52Speaker 11: from that year.
- 43:53Speaker 12: You know, I look back, it's it's like the Org Strand.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Wehenberg Donado.
- 44:00Speaker 4: City.
- 44:01Speaker 12: Yeah, geeky, So you know, six.
- 44:05Speaker 11: Guys you haven't been able to replace. So it's it's
- 44:07Speaker 11: tough when you can't score and now you're really relying
- 44:10Speaker 11: on your goalie to bail you out, you know, most nights.
- 44:14Speaker 3: And we had a conversation here also losing Jaden Schwartz
- 44:17Speaker 3: out of this mix until maybe the last part of
- 44:19Speaker 3: the month, maybe even to New Year's certainly really dense
- 44:23Speaker 3: the plans here as far as far as this is concerned.
- 44:25Speaker 3: So top line scoring with that has been a big
- 44:28Speaker 3: part of the discussion in the hockey world here for upgrades,
- 44:31Speaker 3: I mean, is there a certain type of player, Jonathan
- 44:33Speaker 3: you think that is the best fit in this situation
- 44:36Speaker 3: or is this a matter of whatever guy that you
- 44:39Speaker 3: can get to pump in you more points that makes
- 44:42Speaker 3: the upgrade worth pursuing.
- 44:44Speaker 11: I don't think they're one player away, if that's what
- 44:47Speaker 11: you're asking. So I think there's there's just more more
- 44:51Speaker 11: than one player that this team needs to be able
- 44:54Speaker 11: to take itself to the next level. I mean, so
- 44:58Speaker 11: you know, yeah, they're not one right away, That's that's
- 45:01Speaker 11: pretty much it. Or they're not one player away, I
- 45:03Speaker 11: mean unless unless they do some major overhaul with this roster.
- 45:09Speaker 11: You know, look, there there's definitely some some things, you know,
- 45:13Speaker 11: guys to get excited about. You know, I love you know,
- 45:17Speaker 11: look Shane, whit continues to develop, and you've got ty
- 45:20Speaker 11: Krcha and you've got oh my god, I'm.
- 45:23Speaker 12: Trying to think of the kid out of Spokane.
- 45:28Speaker 11: Yeah, so there are you know, but this is a
- 45:31Speaker 11: team that's a couple of years away.
- 45:33Speaker 12: They're not just one not one player away.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Jonathan, you know the krack and have obviously employed this
- 45:38Speaker 5: defensive first structure this season. And you know, my broadcast
- 45:43Speaker 5: partner Everett and I talk about it a lot that
- 45:45Speaker 5: it tends to be boring hockey from a fans standpoint,
- 45:48Speaker 5: but as you pointed out, when you're having trouble scoring goals,
- 45:51Speaker 5: your only option is to try and keep them out
- 45:53Speaker 5: of your own net. What do you think about that
- 45:55Speaker 5: approach to the game and is it something that's sustainable
- 45:58Speaker 5: through eighty two games and potentially in the.
- 46:00Speaker 11: Laos Well, look, Kings fans can echo those same thoughts, guys.
- 46:04Speaker 11: You know that's the problem here in Los Angeles. I
- 46:06Speaker 11: mean I took a look at the numbers. They're like
- 46:08Speaker 11: three and twelve this year. When they give up three
- 46:11Speaker 11: goals or more, they need to play low event hockey
- 46:14Speaker 11: as well, at least under the style of play that
- 46:19Speaker 11: Jim Hiller wants them, you.
- 46:20Speaker 12: Know, to play. So look, there, you have to deal
- 46:24Speaker 12: with what you've got. And so when you don't have the.
- 46:28Speaker 11: Game breaker, you know, you have to find a way
- 46:31Speaker 11: to shut things down. What was interesting was Seattle guys,
- 46:35Speaker 11: like I took a look last year, the overwhelming majority
- 46:40Speaker 11: of their wins last year they happen to score four
- 46:43Speaker 11: goals or more, which I thought was kind of interesting. Yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 11: but it's just not a long term recipe right now
- 46:49Speaker 11: with the roster that they have.
- 46:51Speaker 12: So they've got to play defense first.
- 46:54Speaker 11: The problem with is it, you know, is it everybody's
- 46:57Speaker 11: got to be at their best every night. If they're not,
- 47:01Speaker 11: then the other team's going to find a way to
- 47:03Speaker 11: break through.
- 47:04Speaker 2: And that's that's tough mentally on the group.
- 47:08Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's and that starts in goal obviously as
- 47:11Speaker 5: well as well. And you know, for a period of
- 47:13Speaker 5: time a week or so ago, Seattle had three goaltenders,
- 47:16Speaker 5: one that's injured, all above the nine hundred save percentage.
- 47:18Speaker 5: And it's a real key to playing that kind of hockey.
- 47:21Speaker 5: But speaking of goaltenders, you guys got Darcy kemper Back
- 47:24Speaker 5: looked like he put up a goose egg the other.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Night against Chicago. That's going to feel good for you guys.
- 47:29Speaker 11: Yeah, But I look also, you know, I looked at
- 47:33Speaker 11: the Chicago game and I was talking with a group
- 47:35Speaker 11: of friends of mine.
- 47:36Speaker 12: You know, Chicago with that rare, you know, two games
- 47:39Speaker 12: in one city, which I think would be is.
- 47:42Speaker 11: I don't know if fans like it, but you know,
- 47:44Speaker 11: we're seeing all the injuries the players are going through.
- 47:46Speaker 11: I think it may be better for teams to do
- 47:49Speaker 11: more of it. But I really think that that Saturday
- 47:52Speaker 11: game against UH for for Chicago's standpoint, was a schedule loss.
- 47:57Speaker 12: And I say that because they got to win on.
- 47:59Speaker 11: Thursday against LA and they've got Anaheim on you know
- 48:03Speaker 11: today here Sunday as we record, and that's the game
- 48:07Speaker 11: that they were looking towards, and I think they looked ahead.
- 48:10Speaker 12: And you know, but good on LA.
- 48:13Speaker 11: But that win for LA, guys isn't going to mean
- 48:16Speaker 11: anything if they can't go into Seattle and put up
- 48:20Speaker 11: another performance like they did in that Saturday win against Chicago.
- 48:24Speaker 11: I mean, look, the future of Jim Hiller is definitely
- 48:27Speaker 11: in question in here in Los Angeles you know, so
- 48:33Speaker 11: we'll see where it goes. But you know, LA, I
- 48:36Speaker 11: don't see LA making a coaching change before Seattle, but guys,
- 48:41Speaker 11: it wouldn't surprise me. LA's got two days off for
- 48:44Speaker 11: the first time coming up Thursday and Friday of this
- 48:47Speaker 11: week before they play Calgary on Saturday. It's something to
- 48:51Speaker 11: pay attention to that LA decides that they want to.
- 48:54Speaker 12: Make a coaching change.
- 48:55Speaker 11: It wouldn't surprise me if they did it after their
- 48:58Speaker 11: game against Utah and Wednesday. I'm not look, Jim Hiller's
- 49:02Speaker 11: Jim Hillers a great guy to deal with, but there
- 49:04Speaker 11: they need something here in Los Angeles and they've got
- 49:09Speaker 11: to build on that win from Saturday when they face
- 49:11Speaker 11: you guys on Monday.
- 49:12Speaker 5: Well, those two those two days off will follow the
- 49:15Speaker 5: first of two meetings against Seattle this month. Two of
- 49:18Speaker 5: those eleven games will be against LA, So it'll be
- 49:20Speaker 5: interesting to see if something like that were to happen.
- 49:23Speaker 5: It could be based on what happens in that game
- 49:25Speaker 5: versus Seattle.
- 49:26Speaker 2: Two.
- 49:27Speaker 11: Yeah, so Seattle game is Wednesday, maybe it's Utah and Monday.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Is that okay?
- 49:31Speaker 5: Yeah, just kind of mixing Wednesday and then and then
- 49:34Speaker 5: later the last game right before Christmas and the twenty
- 49:36Speaker 5: third as well.
- 49:37Speaker 12: All Right, so it's you there. LA's in Utah on
- 49:39Speaker 12: Monday and then okay, Seattle Wednesday. So for me, yeah,
- 49:43Speaker 12: in audition to see what happens.
- 49:44Speaker 11: But yeah, LA, Like I said, bottom line for LA
- 49:47Speaker 11: is that they're far better when they keep games to
- 49:50Speaker 11: like two one, three two. The six nothing game was Look,
- 49:54Speaker 11: that's that's a rarity for Los Angeles, you know, to.
- 49:58Speaker 12: Put up a six spot.
- 49:59Speaker 11: But I get the sense here in Los Angeles that
- 50:01Speaker 11: players are a little frustrated with the type of style
- 50:05Speaker 11: of play that that Jim Hiller wants them to play.
- 50:08Speaker 11: They you know, guys want to score obviously. You know
- 50:12Speaker 11: you heard Jim Hiller the last couple of games talk
- 50:15Speaker 11: about how guys have come some players have gone.
- 50:17Speaker 12: Rogue on the system.
- 50:19Speaker 11: It'll be just to see how things transpire over the
- 50:22Speaker 11: next couple of days.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Jonathan.
- 50:24Speaker 3: We're seeing a lot of stars pass up a chance
- 50:26Speaker 3: these days to take the bag in the off season,
- 50:28Speaker 3: and instead they stay put. Adrian Campe is the latest
- 50:32Speaker 3: testimony here to this. What made the biggest difference for
- 50:36Speaker 3: him with getting his extension done.
- 50:39Speaker 2: He wanted to be here, plain and simple. You know, he's.
- 50:45Speaker 12: You know, just had a baby. He loves being in
- 50:49Speaker 12: Los Angeles.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I think his wife wife went in the labor.
- 50:52Speaker 3: Matter of fact, last time the kid the crack and
- 50:54Speaker 3: we're in Los Angeles back in April, remember that.
- 50:58Speaker 11: So yeah, I mean, bottom line is that he wanted
- 51:01Speaker 11: he wanted to remain here. He you know, his family
- 51:04Speaker 11: lights living out here, and I mean, you wouldn't like
- 51:07Speaker 11: living out here in so cal So look me personally,
- 51:13Speaker 11: like if I'm Adrian Kempe and I want to win,
- 51:16Speaker 11: I don't know why I would resign.
- 51:18Speaker 12: I mean, the future of this team.
- 51:20Speaker 11: Look, the best the best California teams are going to
- 51:23Speaker 11: be in San Jose and Anaheim for the next.
- 51:25Speaker 12: Couple of years. LA is very thin.
- 51:27Speaker 11: But bottom line, the answer your you know, the answer
- 51:30Speaker 11: to your question is is that he wants to stay
- 51:32Speaker 11: in Los Angeles. And that was you know, quality of
- 51:35Speaker 11: life is important to him. So you know, that's why
- 51:38Speaker 11: still l.
- 51:38Speaker 3: I came Minnesota is coming up on Monday before the
- 51:41Speaker 3: matchup against Los Angeles, and it seemed like this last
- 51:45Speaker 3: month nobody could beat the wild and they're on a
- 51:47Speaker 3: bit of a slide once again. Though it may seem
- 51:50Speaker 3: a bit subtle. So I think, to you, what's your
- 51:53Speaker 3: feel as far as last month being a statement or
- 51:57Speaker 3: versus saying, do you need to see more here from Minnesota?
- 52:01Speaker 11: Well, I look, I think Minnesota is a team that's
- 52:03Speaker 11: built for the regular season and not the playoffs.
- 52:06Speaker 2: I got.
- 52:08Speaker 11: They're just not deep enough. I mean, ultimately, they're They're
- 52:11Speaker 11: two lines deep.
- 52:12Speaker 12: And that's it.
- 52:12Speaker 11: And that's the problem they had when they faced Vegas
- 52:15Speaker 11: last year in the playoffs. Once Vegas was able to
- 52:18Speaker 11: shut down the Big Three or at least contain them,
- 52:21Speaker 11: Minnesota just doesn't have enough there. They've got two lines
- 52:26Speaker 11: and they've had two really good goaltenders, but that's it.
- 52:29Speaker 11: And so that, like, I just think that they're built
- 52:32Speaker 11: for eighty two. They're not built to make a long run.
- 52:36Speaker 11: And you know, we'll see what Bill Garon is able
- 52:40Speaker 11: to do with their roster. They've got a really strong
- 52:42Speaker 11: blue line. You know, Walstatton Gustason have played really well.
- 52:46Speaker 12: They sure they've run into this bugaboo.
- 52:48Speaker 11: You know, they've given up eight goals or well seven
- 52:51Speaker 11: goals passed the goalie in the last two games. I
- 52:55Speaker 11: just don't think that. I just think that their their
- 52:57Speaker 11: lack of depth is the issue for the while.
- 53:01Speaker 5: Yeah, it seems like there's really three levels of teams
- 53:03Speaker 5: in this league. Teams that well, I mean before if
- 53:06Speaker 5: you count teams that are just out of the playoff one,
- 53:08Speaker 5: the teams that get in and are trying to get in,
- 53:11Speaker 5: that would be one. Teams that are likely to get in,
- 53:13Speaker 5: like the Minnesota description you just gave, but probably won't
- 53:17Speaker 5: get deep into the playoffs, and then you get your
- 53:18Speaker 5: Cup contenders. And I think where the crack and are
- 53:21Speaker 5: at this season is that after going two seasons without
- 53:23Speaker 5: getting into the playoffs, getting into the playoffs would be
- 53:26Speaker 5: obviously a big step forward for them. And I think that,
- 53:29Speaker 5: you know, while I don't disagree with what you said,
- 53:32Speaker 5: they're more than a player away. I think with the
- 53:36Speaker 5: right move that gets them into the into the first
- 53:38Speaker 5: round or maybe back into the second again, is going
- 53:40Speaker 5: to be considered a success for them. So it'll be
- 53:43Speaker 5: interesting to see what happens between now and trade deadline
- 53:46Speaker 5: with with you know, those decisions, we speculate all the time.
- 53:50Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, you know who knows.
- 53:53Speaker 5: The analogy I use it's like asking somebody, are you
- 53:55Speaker 5: going to sell a car today.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. I don't know if someone's going
- 53:58Speaker 2: to come in. I don't know if they're going to
- 53:59Speaker 2: want to pay the race I'm offering. So we'll see
- 54:01Speaker 2: what happens with that.
- 54:03Speaker 11: Yeah, look, I think Look, I think Seattle would be
- 54:07Speaker 11: better served to get themselves a very high draft pick
- 54:10Speaker 11: than to go around in the playoffs. Like I don't
- 54:12Speaker 11: think I don't think that would serve this organization.
- 54:16Speaker 12: Well, you know the Genny.
- 54:20Speaker 11: Look, it was a great story two years ago and
- 54:22Speaker 11: what they did with Colorado, But at the end of
- 54:25Speaker 11: the day, I just wonder did it really helped them
- 54:27Speaker 11: long term the way that you you know, you look
- 54:30Speaker 11: at this roster. So I think that they would be
- 54:33Speaker 11: you know, if they could get themselves a very high
- 54:36Speaker 11: draft pick.
- 54:37Speaker 12: I think that's better than going around in the playoffs.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Touching on one more Western Conference team that is on
- 54:43Speaker 3: the slate here for this week.
- 54:44Speaker 1: The Kraken will be in Utah Friday.
- 54:47Speaker 3: The Mammoth. They are going to be around this picture,
- 54:49Speaker 3: maybe Jonathan for a long time. But will there be
- 54:53Speaker 3: a playoff Berth this spring? Maybe hold the phone on
- 54:55Speaker 3: that one for now. But what's the deal breaker? You're
- 54:58Speaker 3: thinking to be for Utah to in this race this season.
- 55:02Speaker 12: I think Utah needs to get bigger.
- 55:04Speaker 11: Like they they they're highly skilled, but they've got a
- 55:09Speaker 11: lot of small players and they need to get bigger upfront.
- 55:13Speaker 12: They need to be able to score more greasy goals
- 55:15Speaker 12: than they do.
- 55:16Speaker 2: Uh jj.
- 55:17Speaker 11: Turk has worked out well for them, he's now you know,
- 55:20Speaker 11: he's back up from the top power play where he
- 55:22Speaker 11: didn't start.
- 55:23Speaker 12: At the beginning of the year. But I think that
- 55:25Speaker 12: they need to add some size up front.
- 55:28Speaker 11: They've got themselves a goaltender and Vimelka that you know
- 55:31Speaker 11: I would trust to win a big game.
- 55:34Speaker 12: Their blue line has been good.
- 55:36Speaker 11: Mikhail Sergachev has worked his way into being their number one.
- 55:40Speaker 12: I'm not sure if he is a true number one.
- 55:42Speaker 11: But I just think the biggest thing for them is
- 55:44Speaker 11: they need to add a little more. They need to
- 55:46Speaker 11: add more size up front.
- 55:47Speaker 3: You're a busy man, putting your minor to a lot
- 55:49Speaker 3: of Western Conference manner has certainly appreciated. Jonathan, Thank you
- 55:53Speaker 3: very much for your time.
- 55:54Speaker 12: Thank you. I appreciate you guys having me all right.
- 55:57Speaker 1: Appreciate it.
- 55:57Speaker 3: Jonathan Davis joining us once again, and we're about to
- 56:00Speaker 3: wrap this thing up as far as the week ahead
- 56:02Speaker 3: and our three stars. So it's getting busy now, cracking
- 56:06Speaker 3: in the middle of eleven games in twenty days and
- 56:08Speaker 3: then bam right into the holiday break. So as far
- 56:11Speaker 3: as this week, they're still back at home. Of course
- 56:14Speaker 3: tonight against Minnesota, who has been struggling. Then you got
- 56:17Speaker 3: the Kings who are on a heater right now. But
- 56:20Speaker 3: as we've heard, of course, there still could be some
- 56:23Speaker 3: changes of foot. Who knows, we'll see, but you can
- 56:26Speaker 3: at least expect editing from the opposite of nine to
- 56:30Speaker 3: eight from what we saw back in twenty twenty two
- 56:32Speaker 3: to twenty three. You have Utah who's slipping down the
- 56:36Speaker 3: stairs a little bit, and then there's Buffalo, who is
- 56:39Speaker 3: right back into the Eastern Conference basement. This game against
- 56:42Speaker 3: Minnesota should be fun the Freddie Goodreau faces this former
- 56:45Speaker 3: team game on top of that, But considering all the
- 56:49Speaker 3: crack and had with these obstacles here, you've got eight
- 56:52Speaker 3: points on the table. Do you set the bar here
- 56:55Speaker 3: at five to call this a successful week?
- 56:58Speaker 5: I think that's really I mean, obviously, you know you've
- 57:03Speaker 5: given up a couple of games here in the start
- 57:05Speaker 5: of December that you were hoping to get something out
- 57:07Speaker 5: of but unfortunately you walk away with nothing, so that
- 57:11Speaker 5: the priority as absolutely points. So five in those six
- 57:15Speaker 5: I don't think that's unreasonable. They're going to be difficult
- 57:17Speaker 5: games or you know, I expect probably both of them
- 57:20Speaker 5: to be fairly low event if the Kraken are able
- 57:22Speaker 5: to play their style.
- 57:23Speaker 2: We know La likes to think.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Oh, Wednesday will be you bet that, Yeah, you bet that.
- 57:27Speaker 2: So.
- 57:29Speaker 5: You know it's it's going to be who plays that
- 57:30Speaker 5: system better, and uh, you know, I'm looking forward to it.
- 57:34Speaker 5: But I think you're right, Mike, five points would be
- 57:36Speaker 5: considered a win.
- 57:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I think I'm gonna go five. I'm I mean,
- 57:43Speaker 6: if I could, I'd say five and.
- 57:44Speaker 4: A half, just because the difference you're falling, You're you're
- 57:50Speaker 4: you're falling. Right now, You've got three points in between
- 57:54Speaker 4: you Edmonton and.
- 57:55Speaker 6: Utah of for the first and second lolid card spots.
- 57:58Speaker 4: You've now been jumped by San Jose and the division
- 58:01Speaker 4: standings there twenty nine. You've got Minnesota who's ahead of you, La,
- 58:05Speaker 4: Who's ahead of you by five points. Minnesota's ahead of
- 58:10Speaker 4: you by seven points, Utah's.
- 58:13Speaker 6: Ahead of you by three points.
- 58:14Speaker 4: So I mean, even if you win all of those games,
- 58:20Speaker 4: you're still not guaranteed to be back in a wild
- 58:24Speaker 4: card spot. So I mean, I'm gonna go so far
- 58:27Speaker 4: as to say, I mean, I'll say five and a
- 58:29Speaker 4: half like.
- 58:30Speaker 6: You got Yeah, you have to get five points.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Does a half point come off of effort?
- 58:35Speaker 4: Yes, exactly, like if you lose, you can't lose three nothing,
- 58:39Speaker 4: right I.
- 58:41Speaker 5: Stand.
- 58:42Speaker 1: I love that you need.
- 58:43Speaker 6: Two wins and a and a shootout loss.
- 58:47Speaker 4: And they have to show that you're you're going in
- 58:51Speaker 4: the right direction. You know, you have to leave no
- 58:53Speaker 4: doubt that the last now five games, four and one
- 58:58Speaker 4: were just a blip in the season and you're getting
- 59:01Speaker 4: back to winning games and getting back to cracket hockey,
- 59:04Speaker 4: which which has been established in the first twenty plus
- 59:07Speaker 4: games of the season.
- 59:08Speaker 5: And the ace in their pocket and again I would
- 59:11Speaker 5: underplay this if I was part of the coaching staff,
- 59:14Speaker 5: But yeah, you need five and a half points, you know,
- 59:16Speaker 5: in this in this stretch. But the ace in their
- 59:18Speaker 5: pocket is other than the Vegas Golden Knights. This cracking
- 59:22Speaker 5: team has between two and four games in hand on
- 59:24Speaker 5: everybody else in the conference. Yes, So if you don't
- 59:27Speaker 5: waste those two to four games. If you get points
- 59:29Speaker 5: through those two to four games, all of a sudden, you're,
- 59:32Speaker 5: you know, once you're matching up to those other teams
- 59:34Speaker 5: that have twenty eight to twenty nine games played cracking
- 59:38Speaker 5: are at twenty six.
- 59:39Speaker 2: All of a sudden, you're back at the top of
- 59:41Speaker 2: that of that conference.
- 59:42Speaker 4: And then two like I brought this up the other
- 59:46Speaker 4: day as well, the game's coming up. I mean, Minnesota's
- 59:49Speaker 4: ahead of you, the Kings are out of you, Utah's
- 59:51Speaker 4: ahead of you.
- 59:52Speaker 6: Colorado, well, you know they're ahead of you.
- 59:55Speaker 2: Is a good game on that one?
- 59:56Speaker 6: I don't I.
- 59:57Speaker 3: Believe I have used the phrase ten thou wagon once
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: or twice to describe them.
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: You've got Anaheim, You've got San Jose, Anaheim LA. You've
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: got Vancouver who only there three points back of you
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: twice in a three game spend. You've got Minnesota again
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: early January. Then you go out east, and then you
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: come back for a game against Utah, Anaheim, Vegas, Anaheim, LA.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: So your next ten or so games in your division,
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: only two of them are against teams that are out
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: of it. So I mean every game coming up between
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: now and the All Star break against the Western Conference.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: I mean you need to win those games or get
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: points in those games between now and the Olympic break.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: Let's get to our three stars here for the week
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: before we duck out of here and get right back
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: to busy stuff. This week with four games on tap,
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: I'll begin with my third start, Berkeley Catton. And there
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: are moments I watch him in this is your best
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: player on the ice. Feed him more ice time, get
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: him out, get him out, get him out, get him out.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: He was three of six in face offs against Detroit.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: He's starting to move in the right direction in that area.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: He had also three block shots in that game. He's
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: also committing here to the bit defensively, and he has
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: been asked to play everywhere in this lineup, left wings, center,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: right wing. I'm shocked not in net here at this point.
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: That first goal is coming. I'm not concerned about that.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: He's working for offense eventually, lot of averagescy in this league,
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: you work like him, the goals will come. I'd be
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: a lot more concerned if he would go through games
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: like a passenger, but he's not. And Berkeley Catton, no
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: matter where you play, where you play him, he's making
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: a difference here. My second star is Ty Cartier. Had
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: an assist against the Red Wings. He carried the puck
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: with confidence. He had four hits as well in that game,
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: and he had to play sheltered minute. But to me,
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: he was very, very effective when he was out there,
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: and I thought one of the more upper tier players
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: committing to the way that Lane Lambert wants to play
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: with the meat and potatoes type of brand. My first
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: star is Brandon Montour. Ten shot attempts on Saturday ten.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: He had a monster shift with a great defensive play
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: back in the first period. Very next shift came right
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: back snipe one on John Gibson. That was a game
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: changer at that point. He is shooting the puck, he
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: is working both ends, he is leading. That's the kind
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: of secret ingredient to eventually get this thing turned around.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: Brandon Montour is my first star of the week.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you on on on Montour. My third
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: start of the week is Brandon Montour. I think for
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: the reasons that you just outlined, you know, it was
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: it was hard. I was going between two guys. I
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: like Montour again in a week that defense and I
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: say this, you know, with the utmost respect in a
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: week where it's seeing that defense was optional in terms
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: of the scorer on the board. I thought Montor really
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: was steady. He was trying to drive offense and generate offense.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: And you know, I go back to the little conversation
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: he had with the referee in Edmonton.
- 1:03:21Speaker 6: He got the double minor and the referee.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Was like, I gotta call that one A, so I'll
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: go Monsur and also to a quick shot out. We
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: had a partner, a season ticket holder trip on Thursday
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: to Edmonton, and there was an eight year old on
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: our flight and we had we do these trips all
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: the time, and we had never had a kid on
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: I'm not going to give his name, but we've never
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: had a youth on our plane. Montor comes up, talks
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: to the kid for good five or ten minutes, and
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: you could tell that he was just very, very nervous.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: But I was talking to his dad and he said,
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: you know the guys you're getting on the plane, and
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: he goes, hey, Dad, that's Manys, Hey Dad, that's Grubauer,
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: Hey Dad, that's so and so.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: So.
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: For Monty to come up and talk to him, I
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: thought that was great. My number two star is going
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: to be Adam Larson. Two points against the Wings, goal
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: and assist, and again I think defensively he he did
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: what he could against the Oilers.
- 1:04:18Speaker 6: But I like his jam this week.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: I thought he had some good hits, he had some
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: good plays, a couple of shot blocks. Again, I've always
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: said that Adam Larson is so reliable, so dependable. If
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: you don't notice him on the ice, then he's doing
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: a great job. And I think today or this week
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: you noticed him on the score sheet. He got rewarded
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: with some much deserved offense and some points on the
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: score sheet. And then my number one star, Vince done
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: your three hundredth NHL point, your three hundredth game with
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. The point came on Saturday
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: against Detroit. And then you know the response to the
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: everly hit. I don't want to sound too harsh. Someone
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: had to do it. I was a little disappoin winted
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: with the lack of response this week when when your
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: guys are getting hit.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: And I.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: Like Vince Dunn and what.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: He did for the captain, so hopefully that can filter
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: in and if someone else wants to take a liberty
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: tomorrow or Wednesday or anywhere moving forward down the line,
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: I'm hoping some of that done ther takerness will wear
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: off on the rest of the roster.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Love it well. My third stars is Shane Wright.
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: Sixty nine percent in the faceoff dot over the last
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: two games. You know, he's a left handed center and
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: Channer Stevenson's a right handed center. Channer Stevenson is considered
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: probably the number one guy goes into all the key
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: face off situations. If Shane Wright can become that number
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: two face off guy, now you've got a left hand
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: in or right handed center that can win in most situations.
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: So sixty nine percent in the dot for him over
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: the last two games. He had an assist in the
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: Edmonton game. So he's my my third star. Second star
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: I gave to Maddy Beniers to assists in the last
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: two game games. He sits six talking about his two
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: hundred foot game. He sits sixth on the shot block
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: count for the KRACK And guess what the five guys
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: above him, they're all defensemen. So he is the first
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: forward on the shot block list in terms of most
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: shot blocks in the team at twenty three. When you're
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: thinking about how he's developing his two hundred foot games.
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: So he's my second star and first stars. As ever
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: previously mentioned there, Adam Rson a goal, one assist in
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: that four to three loss. He was plus two plus
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: two guys in that Edmonton yeah ninety four.
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: I left that part out. He was one of the
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: very few pluses in that game.
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: He had three hits in that game. And he's had
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: six block shots over the last two games. So his physicality.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: You know, he leads the team with shot blocks. He's
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: the top of that list with fifty seven. He's a guy,
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: and I agree with you, Everett. You don't notice him
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: that much. You did notice him in that Detroit game
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: because he had a goal and assist, but you don't
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: notice him as much when he's blocking shots and he's
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: playing well defensively because he just feels like that's his
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: job and he just goes out and does it every night.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: There's no fans celebration for that. But that's why I
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: love about his game.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: All right, guys, appreciate you. That's all the time we
