- 2:09morning, as Carrie and Caton and Jeff at the Joni throughout the morning,
- 2:15it should expire at that time. After that just gonna be cold, and
- 2:19I mean really really cold, especially overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. We'll talk
- 2:23about that a little bit later on. Plus, Judge Mary Clair Akers is
- 2:25in the studio this morning, as is Charleston Mayor Amy Schuler Goodwin. The
- 2:30mayor set to give her State of the City speech tonight as part of the
- 2:34city Council meeting. Details and all that coming up, But first I want
- 2:37to get to this. You gotta have something to put you in a good
- 2:39mood on a winter day like today, maybe warming up a little bit.
- 2:43How about some chili. Well, we all love a good pot of chili
- 2:46on a cold day. And for this event, though, you may have
- 2:49to wait a couple of days because it's actually this Saturday, the Adam Creek
- 2:52Alliance is sponsoring their first annual Chili Cookoff starts at ten am this Saturday morning
- 2:58at the Washington District Community Center on Sandplant Road in South Charleston. Christie Ball
- 3:01is from the Allen Creek Alliance and she joined us. Now Christy, good
- 3:05morning, Hey, good morning Dave. How are you doing. I'm doing
- 3:07fine. Thank you for being Are you staying warm and saying safe this morning?
- 3:12Oh? Yes, I'm hibernating today as as am I, you know.
- 3:16And it's a great time. I actually my wife and I actually she
- 3:21did made a pot of chili here yesterday at that. It's a great time
- 3:23for chili as we as we head into this the coldest of winter months.
- 3:29What did this idea for the chili cook off come from? We get in
- 3:31all the details a little bit, but where does the whole idea come from?
- 3:35Yeah, so we are the Allen Creek Alliance, like you mentioned,
- 3:38non proper organization. We represent the community, do a lot of things in
- 3:40the community, provide scholarships, work with the elementary schools utterly and the Washington
- 3:46District Community Building is new. It's a new built for our organization. It's
- 3:51also there's a South Charleston Fire Department located in it as well. But we
- 3:54are now able to have community events and do things like this Blake the chili
- 3:59cook awesome. We pro hand on in the future having more events and more
- 4:03things going on at the Washington District Community Center. Now, I've got a
- 4:08flyer posted on my social media on the ex formerly artist woman on this Twitter
- 4:14and also on Day Down the Radius might be able to check that out.
- 4:15But in addition to the chili cookoff, we'll get back to that at the
- 4:18moment. There's also a cornhole tournament going on as part of this. Is
- 4:21that right? Yes, yes, this cornhole. So chili's not your thing
- 4:26and you want to show off your cornhole skills, we will have that as
- 4:29well, and it's not too late to sign up. But yeah, absolutely,
- 4:31there'll be a cornhole and the chili both And as far as the chili
- 4:35cookoff itself goes, what are the rules this time around? Because there are
- 4:40you know, I've been a part of various chili events in my time.
- 4:43I'm a kind of chili aficionado. How are you working this one out?
- 4:46So? What are the rules? Yeah, so there's not a whole lot
- 4:50of rules. But you can't either make the chili at home and bring it
- 4:54in a cross plot, or you can make it at the District Community Building
- 4:57Center. You can make it there, So either way, either way you
- 5:01can make it so we just try not to if there's anything in it people
- 5:05that will have allergies, we just ask that you let others know in case
- 5:10peanut allergy or whatnot, till we do ask that you list the ingredients such
- 5:13into Chile. Yeah, well that's kind of important. Right now, again,
- 5:16we're talking with Sticky Bailey from the Alum Creek Alliance about this big event
- 5:19that's going to be happening this week. You get back to the Alum Creek
- 5:23Alliance for a moment. You gave us a little bit of the background on
- 5:26that you do, scholarships and things of that nature. How did this organization
- 5:29come into beings Gosha Allen Crik Aliance has been around for many, many years.
- 5:33It was originally started Clyde Wooten, who is a lifetime long member.
- 5:39He has been in the Allen Creek Alliance for I believe might quote me wrong
- 5:42in this fifty years, So it's been around for a long time now.
- 5:46During COVID we didn't do anything. We backed down and nothing's been active for
- 5:50the past three to four years. But we are now getting back into and
- 5:55starting again. We do have thirteen fourteen members are growing. If anyone's interested,
- 6:00go to our Island Creek Alliance page and we do our welcoming new members
- 6:05right now. All right, we'll get back to that a little bit more
- 6:10a little bit later on again. Christy Bailey's with us from the Allen Creek
- 6:12Alliance to the Day Valencechow and five day I brought to you a part by
- 6:15General Hardware and Lumber of Winfield. Come check out the new contractors showroom lumber
- 6:18Yard and Bore. They deliver service and quality right to your door. Don't
- 6:21buy it till you get a quote from General Hardware and Lumber of Winfield.
- 6:26Now back to the Washington District Community Center. I mean, it's so important
- 6:30for these local communities to have community centers like this one. Chrissy, and
- 6:34this is another one of the great ones that we have here in the Canalvaldi
- 6:38because I know it's very much utilized and appreciated by the community there. Yes.
- 6:43Yeah, So it's open to the public during the day. You can
- 6:46go in, you can shoot some hoops through basketball courts. It's a huge
- 6:49gem. And you can also rent it. So if you're having a private
- 6:53party, birthday party, or anniversary party or get together, you can rent
- 6:58a building as well, and and again we'll get to give you that information
- 7:01if you're interested in doing a rental on the building a little bit later on.
- 7:05And as I said, these community centers are so so important to local
- 7:11communities like that, and I know it's very much appreciated by the community there.
- 7:15So in addition to the chili and the coin alturn, but what else
- 7:19you got going on there this Saturday? We have some awesome door prizes and
- 7:25raffle tickets, and trust me, you don't want to miss the door prizes.
- 7:27They are awesome. GI me an example some of those door prices.
- 7:30Oh, we're going to have as far as I know, we're going to
- 7:33have a big stone griddle grill like their grill, and we also have a
- 7:39small basket. So it's going to be a small Bliss gift certificate for two
- 7:42hundred dollars along with some other items that ladies will really Enjoyeah. That sounds
- 7:47like it's going to be a great day. And again weather not looking too
- 7:51good. I think we're going to have some snow they tell us back at
- 7:54forecast Thursday and Friday, but hopefully by this weekend things will kind of clear
- 7:58up a little bit. Get everybody out there. But it is going to
- 7:59be so it'll be a great time at temperatures both Saturday and Sunday are supposed
- 8:03to be in the twenties, so it'd be a great time to go enjoy
- 8:05some chili and cornhall and to check out that center too, because it's an
- 8:09opportunity for people that may have heard about the center but have never been there.
- 8:13It's an opportunity for them to be able to go and kind of tour
- 8:16the facility and find out what it's all about. Yes, absolutely, that
- 8:18is a great opportunity. Like you just said, did you come out and
- 8:22least toward the building and that way if you're interested in hosting an event or
- 8:26ranking it, or even just going to walk and shoot some hoops in the
- 8:28wintertime. It's just a great facility. Indeed it is. Again Chrissy evolves
- 8:33from the Allen Creek Alliance. I do appreciate you taking time to join us
- 8:35on the show today. Now again, where could people learn more? Go
- 8:41to the Allen Creek Alliance Facebook page. That's going to be your best bet.
- 8:45We have links out there provided with QR codes to sign up. If
- 8:48you're it's not too late. To sign up for the chili or the cornhole.
- 8:50But it provides all the information on our Facebook page and there's also information
- 8:54about the Washington District building as well. All Right, Chrissy, appreciate you
- 9:00time. Take you time on your schedule to join us this morning. Best

- 13:58want to welcome into the show Judge Mary clair Acres, your judge ship.
- 14:01Good morning, Good morning Dave. And they did sit me in your chair.
- 14:05So I'm right here in the middle. I feel like I've I've got
- 14:07the master plan right here. I can touch anything, change anything, mess
- 14:11anything up. I'm really excited. That's probably not necessarily a good idea.
- 14:16So this means I get to go sit on the bench. That's right,
- 14:20That's fine. I'll trade you, okay, I bet you would. My
- 14:24job is a hanging a lot easier than yours. I was joking with somebody
- 14:28earlier. I said that two acres is for the price of one. Because
- 14:31I had your husband and then was member of the legislator jb Acres out of
- 14:33the fifty fifth on the show yesterday. JB of course appointed the position last
- 14:37week just prior to the start of the session, replacing more Capito, who
- 14:41resigned to focus on his race for covernor. As someone who's been in office
- 14:45for a while, and I know you got to watch what you say,
- 14:48whatever, But any advice for judge Acres as you have been an elected official
- 14:52now he is one. Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned the
- 14:56rules. So we have rules as judges. We are not allowed to endure
- 15:00any public official or any candidate for office, even if we're married to them.
- 15:03But I will say this, he is the much better Acres. He's
- 15:07way more fair minded and he is he's much smarter than I am. So
- 15:11I'm very proud of him. Our whole family is. I know he's going
- 15:15to do great things. I'm just very very excited to see everything that he
- 15:18does. As for you know, I can't tell him, tell him what
- 15:22to do in office, obviously, I can tell him what to do at
- 15:26home. And yeah, yeah, as long as he keeps in doing those
- 15:28things and keeps in those roles, and I think he's going to be okay.
- 15:33And that's general advice available for any candidate, so so again that is
- 15:35not an endorsement by any of the imagination. That's exactly right. I will
- 15:39spend some time Judge talking about the judicial races here in Kanah County, because
- 15:43I've had several candidates on the show and others wanting to be on, and
- 15:48there's several people that want to be a judge here in Kanawh County. But
- 15:50for the voters, Judge, it can be a bit confusing figure out who
- 15:54is running against him. So take him slow. Because I'm not very smart.
- 15:58I mostly look explain the way this entire thing works. Well, there
- 16:04are currently seven divisions in the thirteenth Circuit of Kinnall County. Then that's our
- 16:11circuit, the thirteenth Circuit currently as it is right now. The confusing part,
- 16:15I think is that people don't understand that there are seven different divisions now
- 16:21and in the upcoming race in twenty twenty five, there will be eight divisions.
- 16:26The legislature created another circuit court position for many different circuits here in West
- 16:32Virginia, and ours was one of them. We appreciate it, Thank you
- 16:33very much, Legislature. That's my plug and we will have an additional seat
- 16:40that is open that no one occupies. Now that will be created, so
- 16:45there will be eight different divisions. The new one is designated as the eighth
- 16:48division. The other thing that will change is our circuit number. We are
- 16:52changing from the thirteenth circuit to the eighth circuit. I don't think that's really
- 16:57that big of an issue in that confusing, but I do think that the
- 17:00different divisions are you know, for example, my own mother called me yesterday
- 17:04and asked me if Stephanie Abraham was running against me. She is not.
- 17:07She occupies the seat that was formerly held by Judge Bloom and she's running for
- 17:12reelection. But that's just an example of kind of the confusion that it causes
- 17:18people. I think it's it's hard to figure out who's running for what,
- 17:22and they're if they are opponents and if so who, So be careful to
- 17:26look for the division numbers, I think is the best advice I can say.
- 17:30Again, we're talking to Judge Mark their acres here of a Dave Allen
- 17:33show, Inside Alive and you are a Canada judgement. I am. We
- 17:36are running. All of us are up at the same time. Our general
- 17:40election is actually the primary because it is a non partisan election, so we
- 17:44will be finished in May. That's another thing that I think voters maybe don't
- 17:48understand or isn't as clear, is that when you're voting for judges in May,
- 17:52that is the election. That is it for us, So come out
- 17:56and vote. And I think it's also hard to get people kind of engage
- 18:00in the judicial races. People don't really want to be involved in the judicial
- 18:03system. I don't really blame them, and once they're there, you know,
- 18:07they understand a little bit better. But it is hard to communicate to
- 18:10the public why it's important to come out and vote for your judicial officers.
- 18:15Yeah. Sometimes I think that those judges seats with all due respect in some
- 18:18of the other nonpartists, and that's not the one that gets all of the
- 18:21attention when it comes to advertising and things of that nature, simply because again
- 18:26the rules, according to Westervirginia Code, the rules are a bit strict on
- 18:30what you are allowed to do. And sometimes you know those and the think
- 18:33about a judge position or maybe a magistrate or somebody like that is people will
- 18:37say, well, I don't know who they are because I've never been in
- 18:41front of them. Unless it makes unless it makes news stories you know,
- 18:45on our station or others, and sometimes people don't realize that, but those
- 18:48are are very, very important, and especially right now. And you and
- 18:52I and the other candidates for that matter that have and sitting judges have talked
- 18:56about this in the past. With the things we have going on with the
- 18:59opioid to deal oploid epidemic and the crisis we have from the foster care system
- 19:04and so on and so forth. I mean, the role of the judge
- 19:07is probably now more important than what it's ever been. I think so.
- 19:11And I think it's hard to translate to people that, you know, how
- 19:14judicial officers and judicial decisions impact their daily lives. I think people are starting
- 19:18to see that. I think the media has been good about educating the public
- 19:22regarding those issues and how people can see it working in their daily lives.
- 19:26And I'm glad you brought up the magistrates because the magistrate court system here in
- 19:30Kanna County has actually gained three new magistrate court positions. So right now there
- 19:36are ten magistrates on the ballot. In May of twenty twenty four will be
- 19:41thirteen. They also have different divisions and their rules are different regarding who runs
- 19:45where but it's important for people to know there are going to be three extra
- 19:49positions for magistrate open. And you know, if you're thinking about getting out
- 19:52there and running, those are good races to get into. There's three new
- 19:57positions up there for anyone to grab that won them. Yeah, and again,
- 20:03finally period rolls through the end of the month, so you still got
- 20:06time twenty seventh, I think it is on that Saturday, so you've still
- 20:08got time to file if you if you'd like to do that. But Dave
- 20:11Allance bybe I was brought to you by a Pinnacle Consultancy only accredited commercial lab
- 20:15in West Virginia. Press Bessel said mold as vessels was banned in some building
- 20:18products, but as a band for all products in the US. Don't expose
- 20:22your family or workers who has vestals mold to lead paint it. With Pinnacle
- 20:25Consultants, they offer real estate and environmental assessments for hazard's materials in their quality.
- 20:30That's a Pinnacle Corp dot net. Pinnacle Corp dot net because what you
- 20:33don't know, can you? Now? As we mentioned earlier, Judge the
- 20:37judges teacher are non partisan, which I think people need to know that now
- 20:41obviously everyone everyone running has a party in West Virginia. Even if you don't
- 20:45have a party, still have a party, if that makes any sense.
- 20:49Everyone is something. And I bring this up because I read an interesting back
- 20:53and forth on social media not long ago about this. One of the candidates
- 20:59who is running for judge doesn't matter who had done a boosted post, meaning
- 21:04that they pay Facebook, you know, to run their ads, and someone
- 21:07had asked what party the candidate was, and there was some back and forth
- 21:11between someone other than the candidate and this person, this commenter about what the
- 21:18party was Person two, and all this just hang with me here. Person
- 21:22two was just trying to explain that the seats are non partisan, while person
- 21:26one trying to make a big deal out of it, saying that the candidate
- 21:29was hiding what their party was and so on and so forth. I it's
- 21:32a lot of words solid on my part of a simple Google search, and
- 21:34that person could have found out what party the candidate was. Anyway. I
- 21:37say all that to say this just pointed out that the rules are a bit
- 21:41different when you are running for judge. They are. We actually did just
- 21:45get a brand new opinion from our judicial investigation Commission saying that we can't identify
- 21:51the parties that we are with, but we have to, in the same
- 21:53statement say that we are running for a non partisan position. So for instance,
- 21:59I can say, I'm Mary clare Akers. I'm running as a Republican
- 22:03for Division seven, that'll be the eighth Circuit when it comes up, but
- 22:10I have to say that that is a non part of that is a non
- 22:12partisan race. So I'm a Republican running in a non partisan race. I'm
- 22:15allowed to say that now. That opinion is fairly new, so I don't
- 22:22really know how it's going to translate across the state. As far as in
- 22:23the judicial races, I think some of the candidates are doing it, and
- 22:26you're right, doesn't matter who, but it is that is now permissible within
- 22:30the rules, where I think before people didn't realize that they could or maybe
- 22:34felt like they could not do that, and it does make the public think
- 22:37that judges are hiding who they are in their party affiliation. Well we're really
- 22:44not. There's just some uncertainty. We've got more certainty now, but before
- 22:48now we have not had a good indicator as to whether or not we should
- 22:52do that. So we don't and again I think that more than likely with
- 22:56West Virginia bean what it is right now, so it's such a bright red
- 23:00state, but for years it was. Before we use the term red and
- 23:03blue Western India, it was a blue state. I think that you'll probably
- 23:07see a lot more of that in advertising now, where candidate X will say,
- 23:11you know, as you said, I'm a Republican running, or as
- 23:12they would have said twenty years ago, I'm a Democrat runner. I want
- 23:15to make sure that people realize that let's talk about your campaign and more importantly,
- 23:19the time you've already spent on the bench, Well, what kind of
- 23:22questions do you have right now? I am I'm the chief judge of the
- 23:26circuit right now, which a lot of people have congratulated me on. It's
- 23:30not really an honor. We rotate that position every year, so I just
- 23:33happen to be up. So it is going to be my job to kind
- 23:37of oversee the courthouse and make sure things run correctly. I am the complaint
- 23:41box and the suggestion box. So it's a place of a little bit of
- 23:48uncertainty for me because I've never done it before and we're starting to deal with
- 23:52some maybe judicial renovations depending on how the County Commission votes. Because we're having
- 23:57these new offices, I will be helping with that and the other thing we
- 24:02will be doing, which really doesn't the general public's probably like yawn when I
- 24:06say this, But the Kanawah County Circuit is going to go to what's called
- 24:10e filing. We've never done that before. It's going to affect all of
- 24:14the lawyers and all of the different agencies that deal with the court system in
- 24:18Kennall County. It's going to be a big undertaking for everyone, including our
- 24:22clerk. So I'll be presiding over that kind of stuff, and you know,
- 24:26if there's a problem in the courthouse, then I'm the first person to
- 24:27hear about it and determine what needs to be done. But I would think
- 24:32that the attorneys, though, would be much in favor of this to be
- 24:34able to e file that, right. I'm sorry, Yeah, I think
- 24:38so e filing has gone, has been implemented across the state, and I
- 24:42think a lot of lawyers are used to it. We're just not in Kennell
- 24:45County. They saved us as for one of the last because we're so big,
- 24:51and I think they were you know, wanted to see how it did
- 24:55across the state. So the ones Judge Mary Claire Acres here on the the
- 25:00DAVA Allen Chill in five eighty live. It's nine point thirty one. All
- 25:03right, So I'm going to ask you this and then we're going to go
- 25:07to something a little bit fun. Why should people vote for Mary Claire Acres
- 25:10for judge? Well, I think that I'm a very tough judge. I
- 25:15think that that's my reputation, but I am very fair. I will give
- 25:19people an opportunity, especially in recovery. If I feel like they are willing
- 25:23to accept that they need help, I'm willing to give them a break on
- 25:26the criminal side of it. If they really want to work on themselves and
- 25:30change their lives, I love to do that. I'd love to see the
- 25:33end result of that. I have. Actually in twenty twenty one, when
- 25:37I took office, I had almost three hundred juvenile abuse and neglect cases on
- 25:41my docket. I've been able to resolve it. We are down to around
- 25:45one hundred, and that number of fluctuates, but that's just on my docket.
- 25:49Just to remind everybody out there, I think we had last year a
- 25:52little bit over eight hundred abuse and neglect cases just filed in that one year,
- 25:57so we're all dealing those cases. I was just able to take a
- 26:02backlog and work it down. It took about two and a half years,
- 26:06almost three to get it done. I do have ajum and al abuse and
- 26:08neglect prosecutor now assigned to my courtroom. Her name is Madison Tuck. Those
- 26:14folks don't get enough recognition because those proceedings are private. They're clothes, nobody
- 26:19can see them except the people involved. And she's doing a great job.
- 26:22So I wanted to give her a shout out. Absolutely absolutely the day I
- 26:26only chilling five eighty line is bright too far by Husband's Pizza this month that
- 26:29your favorite husbands get a large at Nitch Pepperoni Pizza and order of appetizer meatballs
- 26:33only twenty four to ninety nine, dine in delivery or pickups at Husbandspizza dot
- 26:37Com. All right, let's get to something fun here before we catch you
- 26:40loose. All right, you're going to be marrying up a lot of people
- 26:42as we get closer to Valentine's Day. Well, have you on again to
- 26:45talk about this? This is something that was started by another judge at another
- 26:49time, but explain this whole marathon wedding thing that you're going to be doing
- 26:56here soon. So on Valentine's Day, February fourteenth, we have the annual
- 27:00King of Hearts Day to remember Charlie King who started that. He started he
- 27:04had the original King of Heart's Day, and we do that every year on
- 27:07Valentine's Day. We love to do it. People come in get married spontaneously.
- 27:12We have people call and make reservations to get married, and that's what
- 27:15we do. We decorate the courtroom. We spend all day doing weddings and
- 27:18it's really fun. Since I've been judged, I think I've married almost three
- 27:22hundred couples. Last year we did about one hundred and twenty. So this
- 27:26year we're trying to break that record. So if you guys are planning on
- 27:30a wedding out there and you're trying to figure out what to do, come
- 27:32by my courtroom on February fourteenth. It's great fun. We have a blast.
- 27:36And again that is actually going to be on a Wednesday, so it'll
- 27:38be the middle of the week. A great time to go ahead and get
- 27:41to and get married up. And I think that some of our people we
- 27:45had a little meeting and we'll give you some inside baseball information. Judge,
- 27:48we had a little meeting there at the station yesterday and I think that to
- 27:51some of our promotions department want to get involved in that this year. So
- 27:53you're going to be getting a call from Ashley in our promotions department, just
- 27:56so you know, to see how we can kind of help you out with
- 27:57this. Is that all right? I would love to do it. The
- 28:00more word we can get out about that the better, because it really is
- 28:03a fun day. Well, i'll have you on from before then, and
- 28:07then I think last year you actually in between services called us up on the
- 28:11on the show as well, so we'll talk to you. You did,
- 28:15you actually called you actually put somebody's wedding on hold so you could call them
- 28:18for a five minutfol conversation. I hope they didn't have in that time the
- 28:22opportunity to talk to each other out of it or deported to get into a
- 28:25fight. If they did, that's on you, no the one, right,
- 28:30all right, Judge, Mary clare Acres. Always you're honor a pleasure
- 28:32to have you on the show. We'll talk against all right, thank you
- 28:34so much, Dave. All right, thank you Judge Mary Claire Acres.

- 33:02I've got a moment and we're waiting on the mayor, let me tell you
- 33:05about this event. We've been talking about it for a couple of weeks.
- 33:07Now we are really really excited to do. We are going to be teaming
- 33:14up with the folks at the Thornhill Otto Group, which is the sponsors of
- 33:19this show, for an event that we call drop your Socks Now. It's
- 33:22a drive through event and it's going to be this coming Thursday. This is
- 33:27kind of the baby if you wild, the brainchild of our Morning gal on
- 33:30our sister station ninety six to one Superstar Country KWUS Rob Reel, hosts of
- 33:35Upril Early. He got this idea and I think he's probably done this in
- 33:38one of the many, many other markets he's been fired from. But to
- 33:43basically, what we're asking people to do is, starting early on six,
- 33:46seven o'clock, eight o'clock or so on Thursday morning, stop by our studios
- 33:51eleven eleven Virginia Streets in Charleston and drop off some packages of socks. We
- 33:57want your socks. You can drop off a single package that you can pick
- 34:00up at a dollar store somewhere, or we want an entire box that you
- 34:05have gotten, you know, from whatever your favorite apartment store is and you've
- 34:07ordered, or whatever the case may be. We're going to be working with
- 34:09the folks at Mountain Mission to get those in need this winter time season.
- 34:15And the timing we scheduled this thing, you know, a couple of months
- 34:19ago. We had no idea that the weather would be like it is right
- 34:22now. But we'll be out there Thursday morning. It's gonna be about seven
- 34:27or eight degrees or so out there when Rob and myself and other people from
- 34:30all of our stations are going to be out there collective thes socks. You
- 34:34can do it throughout the day so you don't have to necessarily be there early
- 34:37in the morning. We're gonna be doing it until about six o'clock or so
- 34:38that evening. So please please please stop by our studios eleven eleven Virginia Street
- 34:45East and Charleston drop us off some packages of socks. We're calling it to
- 34:47Drop your Socks campaign And a big, big shout out to the sponsors of
- 34:52this show. The title sponsor, the Folks at Thornhill Iudo Group, for
- 34:54making it all possible. We couldn't do it without them. We appreciate them.
- 34:58We've already heard from several members of the community, uh, business community,
- 35:01otherwise, church groups, whatever it's saying that, hey, we want
- 35:05to take part, what do we need to do, and so they are
- 35:08they're they're they're arranging that for us right now. So we appreciate that.
- 35:12But again we always say, whether it's this or whether it's any of the
- 35:15other specific things that we do throughout the year, we have the best listeners

- 36:07studio right now. Just got a text from her a moment ago that she
- 36:12was walking into the building. Run I was running in Actually, why I
- 36:16mean, I don't run? Yeah, we'll slick outside, so this was
- 36:21a slow slog jog. Well, I was saying, don't run. So
- 36:25before we talk about the state of the city tonight, talk about winter in
- 36:30the city. I'm channeling my inner John Sebastian and loving spoonful here. It's
- 36:35been a rough couple of days for city workers. Another snow event coming at
- 36:37Thursday night into Friday. Talk about the work that they've been doing there.
- 36:39Yeah, you know when when you talk about municipal government, this is our
- 36:45jam, this is our meat and potatoes. So we have had hundreds of
- 36:49city workers out NonStop. These are folks that literally, and by the way,
- 36:52the reason why I was late is I stopped I saw one of our
- 36:55road crews out and stop to just give them our thanks. But you know
- 37:00they're eating, sleeping, and around the clock thinking about the roads and keeping
- 37:07their eyes to the sky. We have still left, believe it or not,
- 37:12about four thousand tons of salt. But we've thrown down a lot of
- 37:15salt. We've scraped a lot of roads constantly, seventeen trucks out. Mother
- 37:20nature she's fickle sometimes. So we thought this storm was going to end,
- 37:25and then it picked up a little bit, and so you know, I
- 37:30was out driving on the roads yesterday and today. Just go slow. If
- 37:32you're out and about, please go slow. And one thing I want to
- 37:37mention is, you know Facebook, God God loves Facebook, because there are
- 37:40very few people that do anymore. Sometimes. But you know, when somebody
- 37:45says, oh, I you know our road didn't get scraped or salted,
- 37:49keep in mind that even though seventeen trucks are out, some of our trucks
- 37:52break down. You know, you use them constantly, and they're very heavy
- 37:57and big pieces of equipment. It's not like your car, my car,
- 38:00Dave, right, We're running the shop real quick and it's you know,
- 38:02a thirty minute fixed. Sometimes it takes an hour or two if something goes
- 38:07wrong. We had a truck on a route go down yesterday and kna sity
- 38:10on some of the hills. So I saw somebody say, why aren't you
- 38:13here? They normally are here by now. Well that's what happened, so
- 38:16give them a little bit of grace, and that also includes our refuse.
- 38:20By the way, they're out picking up trash today, Dave, and so
- 38:23you know it's you know, they have until five o'clock tonight. We obviously
- 38:28don't want to be out in dark picking up trash. So you know they're
- 38:30out, but they're going slow, and they're going slower than normal, and
- 38:32you want us to go a little slower than normal. So if you if
- 38:37today is your trash day, buddy, they're coming. And if they normally
- 38:40you know, come by this time, just leave that can out for us.
- 38:44Please, we're going to get there, but it just may take us
- 38:46just to heartbeat more of time today. And you know, I know that
- 38:52our guys and gals really appreciate, you know, the high five. I
- 38:54ran out of my house late last night to you know, honk and wave
- 38:59and and thank our folks who are out there because that's that's what they do
- 39:05and they're really good at it. You know, we have a lot of
- 39:07good folks. We have a little new drivers who have trained for this and
- 39:12who are out there just doing a great job. Today. Very few knock
- 39:15on wood. You don't have any wood on your Deskave, Oh here knock
- 39:17on? Would you know? Accidents? And it's because I think you know,
- 39:22fortunately there's a lot of school kids and parents who are running late for
- 39:25school are not on the roads this morning, so we're thankful about that.
- 39:30Gosh, you was even Marshall University stop their online classes or in person classes
- 39:36today, so you know, it's it's it's serious, and it's serious because
- 39:39of the temperature drop right so snow on the ground, yeah, that's troublesome,
- 39:45but it's that ice and it's those freezing temperatures. As you dually note,
- 39:49we are going to take a breath tomorrow, Dave, and then get
- 39:53right back into it. That's why I know that number four thousand tons of
- 39:57salt on the top of my head, because we monitor that how much we
- 40:01need placing another order just in case. You know, people say all the
- 40:05time you have all of that salt. Well, this is why, folks,
- 40:08because sometimes Mother Nature, you know, she hits us twice in a
- 40:12week, not just once. So Thursday into Friday, everybody still, if
- 40:15you have Friday morning plans, just you know, maybe take your time,
- 40:20maybe plan right now for then. And the problem with this Thursday storm as
- 40:24we know right now, I'm not trying to take over Brian Hughes right,
- 40:28his job he's got. There's a lot of Brandon and all of our good
- 40:32all of our good friends who are true meteorologists. I just play one in
- 40:36the mayor's office. But you know, it's supposed to be drivetime. We
- 40:40think it might start around drive time, which is always the trickiest part for
- 40:45us. So make plans now and then fortunately next week it'll probably warm up
- 40:49a little bit. Okay, my meteorologists job is over. I'm done,
- 40:51Dave. Well, I was gonna say, I was looking at the Extendi
- 40:53forecast next week, they say one of the meteorologists of it morning said that
- 40:58it may be close to sixty one nation. That's right, certainly, certainly
- 41:02good news there. That's all all right, Let's talk about the state of
- 41:06the city. What could your speech is tonight seven o'clock and part of Charltona
- 41:08City Council. What can we expect? Yeah, I'm really excited about this
- 41:12year. You know, I tend to say that every year. Last year
- 41:15was you know, my start of my four year term that I'm currently in,
- 41:19So this makes my I'm in one of I've got another three years on
- 41:22this term, and you know tonight I started the State of the City five
- 41:27years ago as a tradition that I personally started because I felt that, you
- 41:31know, when you're in the Governor's office and you've worked under that Capital Dome
- 41:35day for many, many years, it's a good starting point. Just like
- 41:38we all do in January, what did we By the way, what did
- 41:42we do last year? Let's take a look back, what did we do,
- 41:45and then what are we going to do moving forward? We do it
- 41:47with our own personal home life, our own personal self. We do assessments.
- 41:53Normally people do them in January. I know I do, and so
- 41:57we do for the State of the City. So the State of the City,
- 42:00there are going to be a lot of folks and people. I think
- 42:04they're going to be some things that people are probably waiting to hear and I'm
- 42:08going to be talking about specifically for projects for brand new projects in the City
- 42:15of Charleston. Two. You know about to a lot of folks we've been
- 42:19working with, probably know about council members who have been meeting with us,
- 42:24community members who have been meeting with us, that we're going to take a
- 42:29big open door to tonight. During the speech, We're going to talk a
- 42:35little bit about our city employees, obviously the backbone of everything that we do.
- 42:40We're going to talk about our financial wherewithal. It's something that never makes
- 42:45front page news. It never makes front page news, but you know something
- 42:51tonight that I'm gonna make note of in the state of the city. You
- 42:53know, when I got here five years ago, we only had four million
- 42:57dollars in savings. That wasn't enough. So we made intentional steps to begin
- 43:04saving. Who knew we were going to have COVID and you know URPA funds
- 43:07and you know Cares Act funds come in. But besides that, we wanted
- 43:13to make sure that we had enough in our back pocket for rainy days,
- 43:16for things that are critical to continue to not only help a city sustain,
- 43:24but grow and thrive. And so we went from four million, and now
- 43:28we're sitting at seventeen million. That's something I'm incredibly proud of. We're going
- 43:31to talk about that tonight. We're going to talk about the financial state of
- 43:36the city, not just projects, not just the fun stuff that does make
- 43:38normally you know, front page of the paper. We're going to talk about
- 43:43the things that are actually important to city government, our employees. How much
- 43:47growth we've seen in the City of Charleston over the past couple of years,
- 43:52and so I'm really excited about the opportunity to do that again with talking Mayor
- 43:59goodwe the state of the City speech at tonight at part of the City Council.
- 44:02You no mare, I had Tim Brady from the CVB on a couple
- 44:05of weeks ago, and I know numbers are still coming in for all intensive
- 44:08purposes. It was a pretty darn good Christmas season in Charleston. One of
- 44:13my one of my good friends and owns the business in downtown Charleston told me
- 44:17that as a business owner, it was the best year in the history of
- 44:21his company, which has been there to retail establishment, it's been there for
- 44:23some time. From Holly Jolly Bradley to light Tonight. It was a pretty
- 44:27special time. I'm INSI to see how these numbers play out heads and beds,
- 44:30as Brady and I always talk about im as to see how these numbers
- 44:34play out when the when the finals come out here soon. Yeah, you
- 44:36know that's something and Tim knows this as well as anybody in the state of
- 44:40West Virginia and quite frankly in the country. When you hear about tourism,
- 44:45you think the fun people. Those are the folks who don't know. We're
- 44:47not We're money people. I consider myself, Sill a tourism person. Being
- 44:52the former sec Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Commissioner of Tourism, I can tell
- 44:55you tourism equals jobs. We're going to talk about that tonight. That's going
- 45:00to be a big chunk in the state of the city. We're going to
- 45:01reflect upon. Oh hey, by the way, what did we get with
- 45:06the USA Table Tennis, USA Volleyball? By the way, In October we
- 45:09announced that USA Cycling coming to Charleston, West Virginia for five years. These
- 45:15are cyclists, Dave that are going to be the winner of the Men's and
- 45:20women's are going to be completing in Paris twenty twenty four, they're going to
- 45:23the Olympics. Those you can't underestimate, mayor you can't underestinate. Let me
- 45:28interrust, we can't underestimate how big this thing is for Charleston. This is
- 45:30the biggest single event that Charleston has probably ever hosting. I mean, when
- 45:37you think about it, because you've got all these people that are going to
- 45:38be coming in, you got the press corps that follow them, and the
- 45:42journalists and so on and so forth. I mean, really, this is
- 45:45a huge, huge get for Charleston, and it is for what it's going
- 45:50to take to pull this off from your street department and architects and everything else.
- 45:54This is the biggest of it Charleston's probably ever done. Yeah, and
- 45:58you know, let me make that quick connection if we can. I know
- 46:00you probably have to go to break soon. I'm looking at the clock setting
- 46:01right in front of RN of front of your desk. But let me make
- 46:05this quick connection. We would have never had the opportunity to get this had
- 46:08we not paved roads, had we not come in five years ago doubled the
- 46:12paving budget and say let's get our roads into shape. Yeah, buddy,
- 46:15we got a long way to go still, and we still are keeping up
- 46:17that funding level. But when they came in, when USA Cycling came in
- 46:22and they did a tour of the roads, we came back to the Governor's
- 46:25or the mayor's conference room and we sat there and they said, your roads
- 46:30are great. We said, okay, well, if we need to make
- 46:32modifications, we need to pave, let us know. We'll put on the
- 46:36paving stage with the Yeah, I don't know, we'll think about it.
- 46:39But they look really good. We were, okay, great. That is
- 46:45what gets us their investment. We're going to talk about that keyword tonight is
- 46:49going to be investment. I'm going to say it about twenty seven times tonight,
- 46:52but in less and until we continue to invest in our structures, in
- 46:54our roads and our sidewalks, in our bridges, in the facilities that keep
- 46:59people coming and attracting people here, not only for the vibrancy, the vitality
- 47:05of a city and the people who live and work here already, but those
- 47:08who are coming in to visit. That is a big part of the speech
- 47:13tonight. All right, Mayor, we will be watching intently, and of
- 47:16course you can follow with the updates from Jeff and the new team at wb

- 50:07surprised. Donald Trump onon the Iowa Caucus's big time yesterday to The New York
- 50:09Times called it a sweeping victory, and it was no doubts in my mind.
- 50:15I'm not sure what there ever was. Donald Trump will be the nominee
- 50:20from the Republican Party for president, setting up a battle that literally no one,
- 50:24at least seventy six percent of the population have said, according to polic
- 50:28that they don't want a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
- 50:32Now, if you're keeping score at home, Trump got fifty one percent,
- 50:36Ron Desatus with twenty one percent, Nikki Haley with nineteen percent, And
- 50:40I think this really says something about the power of Donald Trump. As I
- 50:45mentioned earlier turn back to clock eight years. At that time, Iowa voters
- 50:50were firmly behind Ted Cruz, basically rejecting Trump. And oh how that has
- 50:55changed. And interesting to note that change because, unlike many states to West
- 51:02Virginia for one, the Republican establishment in Iowa has not exactly embraced Donald Trump
- 51:10even after he was elected president. The establishment wasn't necessarily behind Trump, talking
- 51:17about your state gops and things of that nature. But obviously now the voters
- 51:22are Trump's thirty point win is far and away a record for a contestant caucus
- 51:30in the state of Iowa. So now Nikki Haley and roberts Status will place
- 51:34their attention on New Hampshire in South Carolina, while Trump will head to court
- 51:38today. And I will say this editorial comment here. If anything good did
- 51:45come out of Iowa, it's the fact that Vivic Ramaswami has ended his run
- 51:49for president. So he's done. So Haley and Desatus will stick around for
- 51:54a little longer. But let's face it, it's Trump v Biden two point
- 51:59zero this fall, a race again that seventy six percent of Americans say they
- 52:06don't want. Fowls have also shown that had to head, Trump loses to
- 52:08Biden, but head to head, Hayley beats Biden. So there you go.
