• 1:18
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_03: I like the mix of names there.
• 1:20
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 1:21
  SPEAKER_02: Leonardo's got a few.
• 1:22
  SPEAKER_02: Leonardo.
• 1:23
  SPEAKER_02: Leonardo DePudle.
• 1:24
  SPEAKER_02: Depoodle.
• 1:24
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_03: His tongue hangs out because he doesn't have any teeth.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_03: He's the cutest little thing.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_03: I'll have to send you a picture of him.
• 1:29
SPEAKER_02: And he's got three legs.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_03: Three legs gets around, but sleeps most of the day.
• 1:33
  SPEAKER_02: He's old.
• 1:33
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_02: So I had a three-legged dog when I was growing up.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_02: I would walk to school and there was a you know just a stray?
• 1:40
SPEAKER_02: Just a no, it was a family dog that was just trusted.
• 1:43
  SPEAKER_02: Oh.
• 1:43
  SPEAKER_02: You know?
• 1:44
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_02: And then one one day it was like, oh, he doesn't have as many legs as he had the other.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_03: Last time I saw him.
• 1:49
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 1:49
  SPEAKER_02: But still hanging out.
• 1:50
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 1:51
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_03: This guy gets around pretty good.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_03: Zeus is a great name.
• 1:54
SPEAKER_03: Zeus is a great dog.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_03: So we're fostering dogs, but we're failing at the fostering because we wind up keeping them.
• 2:00
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 2:00
  SPEAKER_03: Um you get attached.
• 2:02
  SPEAKER_03: I love this guy.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_03: He follow he comes with me everywhere.
• 2:04
SPEAKER_03: So we had him we're kind of we're training him to be a service dog.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_03: Um and he's do you say that just so you could take him everywhere?
• 2:12
  SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_03: Because initially I I was going to foster him and then you know, these dogs are so smart, I thought, man, what a great thing to have for a veteran or someone who's suffering, you know, with anxiety.
• 2:22
SPEAKER_03: And these dogs are incredible.
• 2:24
SPEAKER_03: Like they can sense a panic attack and they'll lay on you at night.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's what these dogs, these German shepherds can do is phenomenal.
• 2:32
SPEAKER_03: So that was my initial intent.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_03: Like, let's raise him and we'll give him to a like a veteran.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_02: Do you work with any like programs that are doing that?
• 2:40
SPEAKER_02: Like because I know uh Paws in Chicago does some great work.
• 2:43
  SPEAKER_03: Paul is amazing.
• 2:44
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the founder of Paws.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_03: My wife works really closely with them, and they've been great.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_03: They've been helping us place a lot of dogs.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_03: So LA has this shelter crisis where I don't know what's going on there, but there's a lot of backyard breeders and they're just abandoning these dogs anymore.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_03: So um we've been sponsoring these flights every month and shipping 300 dogs out a month and placing them in homes where they're not gonna get killed.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_03: Because in LA they euthanize these dogs.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_03: And just it's really sad.
• 3:11
  SPEAKER_03: Wow, dude.
• 3:11
  SPEAKER_03: That's incredible.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_03: He was gonna be euthanized.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_03: Well, we we have a plane we don't have a plane, but there's uh a company that will transport the dogs on planes and drop them off, and it's incredible the amount of volunteers that come out and then place these dogs in great homes.
• 3:27
  SPEAKER_03: They're beautiful.
• 3:27
  SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're amazing dogs.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_02: You know, I was not a dog guy growing up.
• 3:31
SPEAKER_03: I never had did you have a dog?
• 3:32
SPEAKER_03: I had a little dog, but they were my three older sisters, and they were really kind of his dog.
• 3:36
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
• 3:38
  SPEAKER_03: He was their dog.
• 3:38
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
• 3:39
  SPEAKER_02: You know.
• 3:39
  SPEAKER_02: Now I have a dog.
• 3:40
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_02: Now I'm into dogs a lot more.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_02: And uh I actually did a gig for paws.
• 3:45
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, you did?
• 3:46
SPEAKER_02: And it's very like emotional.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_02: They were, you know, it has the cigar McLaughlin vibe, you know, these dogs are hidden.
• 3:52
  SPEAKER_02: It's a whole story.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_02: Somebody was up there giving a testimonial about and then this one of these gigs that I you gotta do sometimes.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_02: You go from that to all right, who's ready for some comedy?
• 4:06
  SPEAKER_02: That's a tough audience to turn.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I remember it because of the fact that those are the ones you we were at their event with you this summer, and man, like it was so emotional, and it was it was something, yeah.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_03: They they do a great job though.
• 4:21
  SPEAKER_03: They're amazing.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they do good work, yeah.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_02: And uh it's great to have Zeus here.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_02: It's the first canine we've had on the show.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_02: We gotta get a photo with Zeus.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_02: We'll put them on the wall.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would love that.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, we're back.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_02: Uh we took a little break.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you had an Easter, I call it uh Easter break.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to bring that back.
• 4:36
  SPEAKER_03: Spring break.
• 4:37
  SPEAKER_02: Now it's spring break.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_03: We had I grew up, went to St.
• 4:40
  SPEAKER_03: Michael's.
• 4:40
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 4:41
SPEAKER_03: So we had Easter break.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_02: Dude, I just saw that, and I think I had heard that back in the day because obviously you've been on my radar a long time, and we've met a few times.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_02: We know each other now for going back years.
• 4:50
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_02: Well, with RJ and Jared.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_02: And even I think I first met you in uh Rosemont at uh Sebastian.
• 4:56
  SPEAKER_03: Sebastian, yeah, you're right.
• 4:57
  SPEAKER_03: You did, yeah.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_02: And I saw Juliana meet Sebastian.
• 5:00
  SPEAKER_02: That should have been.
• 5:01
SPEAKER_03: Can I did someone have footage of that somewhere?
• 5:03
SPEAKER_03: That was like a moment.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_03: So Juliana's interviewed the biggest stars in the world.
• 5:07
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_03: I mean, Clooney, you name it.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_03: Like she did the red carpet for over 20 years.
• 5:11
SPEAKER_03: And I surprised her for her birthday.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_03: And this was when Sebastian was still kind of he wasn't doing the arenas.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_03: This was at the Rosemont Eater.
• 5:18
  SPEAKER_03: She was so nervous.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_03: Like she left her, she's like, What happened to me?
• 5:23
  SPEAKER_03: I fell apart.
• 5:24
SPEAKER_03: Like she was like fangirl, like uh stuttering, and it was hilarious.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_03: And it was so great.
• 5:30
  SPEAKER_02: You were great.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_02: Well, she doesn't get it doesn't get more Italian than than your wife.
• 5:33
  SPEAKER_02: No.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_02: And then feeling that vibe, like that was uh it was like I remember both of us were kind of like what's going on.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_02: We weren't Italian enough to relate.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_03: It was a different world, yeah.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_03: And she's right off the boat, like she was born in Italy.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_03: So she came to America and she was like eight years old.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_03: So that's gotta be does she talk about that a lot, like how challenging that must have been.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, she um they came to America on a vacation and they pulled into her uncle's house.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_03: This is when our borders were wide open.
• 6:01
SPEAKER_03: Well, no, no, no, no.
• 6:02
  SPEAKER_03: They came legally.
• 6:04
  SPEAKER_03: They came legally.
• 6:05
  SPEAKER_03: That's just a joke.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_03: And they uh the uncle had left Italy and came to America and opened up a restaurant in DC and was super successful.
• 6:13
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_03: And they get out of the taxi from Dulles Airport, and in the driveway, the uncle has a Rolls Royce in this big home.
• 6:21
SPEAKER_03: And her father got out of the taxi and said, We're moving to America, because if this guy can do it, I sure as hell can do it.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_03: And then they went back and got their stuff and did all the paperwork, whatever they had to do, and they came to America.
• 6:33
SPEAKER_03: And they have done well, they've done well, yeah.
• 6:35
  SPEAKER_03: That's a that's incredible.
• 6:36
SPEAKER_03: That's how they opened up men's clothing stores throughout DC, and it was the American dream.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_02: You know and what were you doing at this time?
• 6:43
SPEAKER_02: Because you are a South Side guy.
• 6:44
  SPEAKER_02: You're from Orland Park.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_02: You mentioned going to St.
• 6:47
  SPEAKER_02: Mike's.
• 6:47
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_02: Are you still connected to the South Side much?
• 6:51
  SPEAKER_03: I mean a little bit.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_03: You know, my mom lives in like the Burr Ridge area.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_03: My sisters kind of live southwest, so I still go back.

SPEAKER_03: Dude, you are helping out so I did I need to do more, trust me.
• 7:12

• 7:25
  SPEAKER_03: Oh my God.
• 7:26
  SPEAKER_03: It's an institution.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_02: Do you have to be a little banged up to go in there?
• 7:29
SPEAKER_02: Uh well when I was younger, yeah.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_03: When I was younger, you'd go there and there was always a fight out in the street.
• 7:35
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
• 7:35
SPEAKER_03: But it's the most incredible burrito you'll ever eat.
• 7:38
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
• 7:38
  SPEAKER_03: Well check that out.
• 7:39
  SPEAKER_02: All right.
• 7:40
  SPEAKER_02: Hey guys, quick question.

• 8:26
SPEAKER_02: And I g remember reading all your backstory because you burst on the scene uh in what, 2004?
• 8:32
  SPEAKER_02: 2004, yeah.
• 8:33
  SPEAKER_02: With the apprentice.
• 8:34
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_02: And that kind of like shifted everything.
• 8:36
  SPEAKER_02: It did.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_02: What was how did you find yourself on that show?
• 8:39
  SPEAKER_03: It's funny.
• 8:40
SPEAKER_03: So a girl I went to Loyola with, uh, Ileana Romero, um, her married name.
• 8:45
SPEAKER_03: Uh her mom was a talent agent in Chicago.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_03: Um, Myrna Salazar was her name, God rest her soul.
• 8:51
  SPEAKER_03: She passed away recently.
• 8:52
  SPEAKER_03: Incredible woman.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_03: But she was a talent agent for children.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_03: Um, and she called me up one day and she said, Hey, there's a new show.
• 9:00
SPEAKER_03: They're looking for young entrepreneurs, and you know, this could be really good for you.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_03: Like, you just sold your company, you're an entrepreneur.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_03: And uh I said, And what was the company you just sold?
• 9:09
SPEAKER_03: I had sold cigars around the world, so it was a monthly um subscription-based business.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_03: I started in 1994, right out of college, where every month you'd get five cigars sent to your home, a newsletter, cigar cutter, gift card, you know, and then every month you'd get these packages sent to their home.
• 9:24
SPEAKER_03: Were you a big cigar guy?
• 9:25
  SPEAKER_03: I wasn't.
• 9:26
  SPEAKER_03: Really?
• 9:26
SPEAKER_03: No, I am now though.
• 9:27
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
• 9:27
SPEAKER_03: So later in life, I kind of enjoy a cigar from time to time.
• 9:31
  SPEAKER_02: What's a good recommend a cigar for us?
• 9:33
SPEAKER_02: Like a$20,$25 Arturo Fuente is a good one.
• 9:37
SPEAKER_02: That was a good one?
• 9:38
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can there's a lot of good cigar shops in Chicago now, too.
• 9:41
  SPEAKER_03: There's a great one on Wells.
• 9:42
  SPEAKER_02: Right next to Zany's.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right next to Zany's.
• 9:44
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 9:44
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 9:44
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 9:45
SPEAKER_03: That that's been there forever.
• 9:46
  SPEAKER_03: Up down.
• 9:47
  SPEAKER_03: Up down, yeah.
• 9:47
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 9:48
  SPEAKER_03: That's funny.
• 9:48
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a good spot.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_02: I never was b big into cigars other than like, you know, some swish or sweets on the golf course when I was 15.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_03: I you know why I like it now?
• 9:58
SPEAKER_03: Because you can get a bunch of guys together and we have a group of guys, and it's like, when do you have 45 minutes where you're just gonna sit around and shoot the breeze?
• 10:06
SPEAKER_03: You know, it kind of forces you.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_03: So I like guys will come over to my house and we'll sit out in the the porch and it's 45 minutes, you know.
• 10:14
  SPEAKER_03: Great group.
• 10:14
SPEAKER_03: So like RJ, you know, RJ lives next door to me, so he'll come over.
• 10:19
  SPEAKER_03: Really?
• 10:19
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's a big cigar guy.
• 10:20
  SPEAKER_03: He's a great, great, great hang.
• 10:22
  SPEAKER_02: That's fun, dude.
• 10:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it kind of screws up my voice.
• 10:24
  SPEAKER_02: That's why it's kind of like a few.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_02: Well, the next morning you're your toast.
• 10:26
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
• 10:27
SPEAKER_03: I don't care how many times you brush your teeth, it's you're you're done.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you get yourself and this kind of ahead of time.
• 10:32
SPEAKER_02: The them sending out stuff, yeah, subscription.
• 10:35
  SPEAKER_03: It was very early.
• 10:36
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 10:36
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 10:36
SPEAKER_03: I had heard about these guys who did beer across America, and my brother-in-law had done some work with them.
• 10:41
SPEAKER_03: They were ex uh Arthur Anderson guys or Anderson Consulting guys, and they started beers across America.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_03: They lived up in Barrington, and I thought, damn, what a great idea.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_03: And then I was kind of brainstorming, and I took a job out of college that I didn't really enjoy, and I knew I was an entrepreneur because I started small businesses throughout college and stuff like that.
• 10:59
SPEAKER_03: And then uh I came up with this idea, and a buddy of mine and I opened up uh our world headquarters in his 400 square foot studio apartment, and uh neighbors were thrilled.
• 11:10
  SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
• 11:11
SPEAKER_03: And we got seven one-eight hundred phone lines piped in, and I got some used desks and some used computers for my brother-in-law, and then um we were ready to launch.
• 11:20
SPEAKER_03: And I went in and I quit my job at the metals company I was working at, and uh the two owners laughed at me and they said, That's the craziest idea.
• 11:27
SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be back here in six weeks because you're gonna run out of money.
• 11:30
  SPEAKER_03: And I was pissed.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_03: And uh I got back to our headquarters and I sat down at my computer and I wrote a letter and I sent this letter explaining the company, and I asked for help.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_03: And I sent it to Jonathan Branmeyer's radio show.
• 11:45
  SPEAKER_03: Remember Johnny B?
• 11:46
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 11:47
SPEAKER_03: And two weeks later, his producer called me up.
• 11:49
SPEAKER_03: Uh Carol Harman was her name, and she said, Branmeyer, we'll have you on a show for five minutes.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_03: She said, make your five minutes count.
• 11:56
SPEAKER_03: And I went to the John Hancock studio the day I was supposed to, and I met Branmeyer and we hit it off.
• 12:01
SPEAKER_03: And my five minutes turned into 35 minutes at the heart of morning rush hour, right?
• 12:05
SPEAKER_03: When you're everyone was in their car.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_03: We didn't have satellite radio at the time.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_03: And he was going on and on.
• 12:10
SPEAKER_03: He'd said he'd been a member of the Cigar of the Month Club for years.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_03: So I'm like, oh my God.
• 12:13
SPEAKER_03: Like this is and uh kept giving out the 1-800 number, and I sprinted back to our apartment.
• 12:19
SPEAKER_03: It was at Division in Lakeshore, and uh every phone in the the apartment was ringing.
• 12:25
SPEAKER_03: And I pick up the first phone I could get my hands on, and this lady ordered a 12-month subscription.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_03: And I literally had to stop and I had to say, Lady, are you are you sure?
• 12:32
  SPEAKER_03: It's like 40 bucks a month.
• 12:34
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_03: And she was sure, and then I hung up the phone and I looked over at my partner.
• 12:37
SPEAKER_03: I said, We're gonna be in business for at least a year because we've got a 12-month subscription we need to fulfill.
• 12:42
SPEAKER_03: But from that one interview, we did over a hundred thousand dollars in sales.
• 12:45
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 12:45
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was incredible.
• 12:46
SPEAKER_03: It changed my life, Branmeyer.
• 12:48
SPEAKER_02: I mean, that is wow because that those days are over.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_02: They're all you could go on a morning radio show and move the needle like that.
• 12:55
SPEAKER_02: And that speaks to how big Johnny B was at that time.
• 12:58
SPEAKER_02: And you've spent reference on here a few times.
• 12:59
SPEAKER_02: We had G and Greck go on and talked about like that era of Mankow.
• 13:04
SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, I did all the morning shows, and then I went and went to LA and New York and did radio, and it was free.
• 13:10
SPEAKER_03: Like I was just hustling, you know, because I my parents were school teachers.
• 13:14
SPEAKER_03: I didn't have a trust fund, I didn't have like we muscled together twenty thousand dollars.
• 13:18
SPEAKER_02: But you must have picked up a work ethic from your family and some kind of drive that you maybe just were born with.
• 13:24
SPEAKER_02: Are you the oldest in your family?
• 13:26
  SPEAKER_02: You're the youngest.
• 13:27
  SPEAKER_03: Three older sisters.
• 13:28
  SPEAKER_02: Dude.
• 13:28
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 13:28
SPEAKER_02: And you got the hustle?
• 13:29
  SPEAKER_02: You got the hustle.
• 13:30
SPEAKER_02: You got three older sisters.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_02: You could have been coasting.
• 13:33
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no.
• 13:33
SPEAKER_03: My dad worked two jobs.
• 13:35
SPEAKER_03: He was the superintendent of schools in Pales Heights.
• 13:37
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_03: And then he was on the weekends, he would teach college courses at Loyola.
• 13:41
SPEAKER_03: And then my mom was Oh, that's how you got into Loyola?
• 13:44
SPEAKER_03: Uh I got in Oh, I didn't get into Loyola.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_03: I went to Bradley my freshman year.
• 13:48
  SPEAKER_03: Did you really?
• 13:48
SPEAKER_03: And then I had to transfer in and I got free tuition.
• 13:51
SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, so it was kind of great.
• 13:54
SPEAKER_03: Uh and then I, you know, I paid for my room and board and I started a boat cleaning business uh in the summers because I had to pay for you know all the other things that were associated with it because my parents, you know, dude, the hustle in you.
• 14:06
SPEAKER_03: So I I had a boat cleaning business in New Buffalo, Michigan, and down here and what was driving you?
• 14:11
SPEAKER_02: Did you want to make money?
• 14:12
  SPEAKER_02: Did you wanna yeah?
• 14:13
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I wanted to to be in business, I wanted to make money.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_03: Um I was infatuated by it.
• 14:19
SPEAKER_03: My my dad's brother, my uncle, when I was younger, gave me a subscription to the Rob Report magazine.
• 14:25
SPEAKER_03: You know what that is?
• 14:26
SPEAKER_03: It's this magazine where they have it's like a lifestyle magazine for the rich.
• 14:31
SPEAKER_03: Oh like all these fancy cars and helicopters and and I was just like, damn.
• 14:37
SPEAKER_03: You can have that life.
• 14:38
  SPEAKER_03: And I didn't think I could.
• 14:40
SPEAKER_03: And when I started the boat business, I got to meet a lot of wealthy people because they all own the yachts in the different harbors.
• 14:45
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_03: And I realized, well, shoot, if these they're they're not there's nothing different about them than me.
• 14:52
SPEAKER_03: And uh it gave me a lot of confidence because I realized if they could do it, I could do it.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_03: Because growing up, my parents were educators, so they the only adults that really came into my life were fellow educators.
• 15:02
SPEAKER_03: You know, we didn't they weren't hanging out with entrepreneurs or CEOs, you know, that wasn't part of their sphere.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_02: What was your like early, what was had your attention as a kid?
• 15:11
  SPEAKER_02: Were you into sports?
• 15:12
  SPEAKER_02: Were you playing?
• 15:13
  SPEAKER_02: I was, yeah.
• 15:13
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, loved sports.
• 15:15
  SPEAKER_03: Um, still do.
• 15:16
SPEAKER_03: Uh I was on the first ever varsity volleyball team at Carl Sandberg.
• 15:20
  SPEAKER_03: Nice varsity volleyball team.
• 15:22
  SPEAKER_03: I wrestled for a couple of years, didn't didn't love that.
• 15:25
SPEAKER_03: Um I gotta cut weight and you know it was get the skin disease, get empathy, yeah, right?
• 15:33
SPEAKER_02: Rolling around on the mats.
• 15:34
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
• 15:35
  SPEAKER_03: That aren't cleaned.
• 15:36
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 15:37
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 15:37
SPEAKER_03: So it was it was good, it was fun.
• 15:39
  SPEAKER_03: You know, great upbringing.
• 15:40
SPEAKER_03: I loved growing up on the south side and my parents were amazing, like very normal, you know, which isn't that normal anymore.
• 15:46
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
• 15:47
SPEAKER_02: And then you get the uh break on apprentice and seize the moment.
• 15:52
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_02: And this is another show that you know, to put it in perspective, this is when everybody was watching the same stuff.
• 15:59
SPEAKER_02: It was with the water cooler show.
• 16:00
SPEAKER_03: It was early on in reality TV.
• 16:02
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is 24 years ago.
• 16:04
SPEAKER_03: This is the second Burnett reality thing Survivor just coming out and then Apprentice.
• 16:10
  SPEAKER_02: Apprentice was second.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 16:12
SPEAKER_03: So this my friend's mom, Myrna Salazar, called me up and she goes, This show's great.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_03: I said, I I'm not really interested in being in a reality show.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_03: Like you know, it's not my thing.
• 16:20
SPEAKER_03: And she says, Well, I made you an appointment on Thursday at three o'clock, you better be there.
• 16:23
SPEAKER_02: So it was in person, you know, to like set a tape in.
• 16:25
SPEAKER_03: They flew people in, they were interviewing people, and I did this interview, and uh they had uh 215,000 people apply.
• 16:34
  SPEAKER_02: Holy cow.
• 16:34
SPEAKER_03: And they narrowed it down and I got called to be part of the final fifty.
• 16:38
SPEAKER_03: And this is interesting because back then they would fly the fifty finalists to LA for a week.
• 16:44
SPEAKER_03: You were sequestered in a hotel room, and they would pull you in and out for all these different meetings, and they you had to go through all these tests, an IQ test, psychological test.
• 16:53
SPEAKER_03: They had to give me this physical examination, like what what am I?
• 16:57
SPEAKER_03: It's not the bachelor, you know, it was weird.
• 16:59
SPEAKER_02: Um and who was involved in that?
• 17:04
  SPEAKER_02: It was weird.
• 17:05
SPEAKER_02: Everyone's gotta take their clothes off.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_02: Bend over and cough, you know, once over.
• 17:10
SPEAKER_03: Right and then um I went through the week of testing, and then I got pulled into a room with a guy named Mark Burnett who created these shows.
• 17:18
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 17:18
SPEAKER_03: And uh, much to my surprise, I was um the 17th contestant.
• 17:23
  SPEAKER_03: I was the alternate.
• 17:25
SPEAKER_03: So remember when you were a kid and you were the last one picked for the team, it sucked.
• 17:30
SPEAKER_03: I was worse than the last one picked.
• 17:32
SPEAKER_03: So they were they had sixteen, and if someone failed to be like, And they told you this, yeah.
• 17:35
  SPEAKER_03: You're the alternate.
• 17:36
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 17:37
SPEAKER_03: So then I guess someone failed the drug test.
• 17:39
SPEAKER_03: I don't know what what went on.
• 17:41
SPEAKER_03: They called me off the bench and they said, You have two weeks, you gotta be in New York, and you can't tell anyone what you're doing, because this was very secretive.
• 17:48
SPEAKER_03: You know, they didn't want the cast to get out, they didn't want anything to get out, and uh I had to come up with a story, and I told all my friends and my family that I was going to Cuba for two months to buy tobacco fields for the cigar business.
• 18:00
SPEAKER_03: And I thought I hung out with some sharp guys, these guys believe me.
• 18:04
SPEAKER_03: Like it's against the law back then.
• 18:06
SPEAKER_03: I couldn't even go to Cuba, you know.
• 18:08
SPEAKER_02: When your skin looks better, you feel more confident everywhere you go.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_02: At work, out with friends, on a date, or like me at a big show.
• 18:18

• 18:50
SPEAKER_03: It was it was the throttle down, it was no sleep for, you know, I don't know, it was like eight weeks, I think, seven or eight weeks of taping.
• 18:57
  SPEAKER_03: It was pretty intense.
• 18:58
SPEAKER_03: And we lived in this uh constructed apartment in Trump Tower, and they would keep the lights on at night intentionally, because they wanted you to have sleep depriv, you know, it was great drama, you know, sleep deprivation.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_02: Oh, so they were trying to agitate you a little bit, get you under pressure, yeah.
• 19:13
SPEAKER_03: It was brilliant, you know.
• 19:14
SPEAKER_03: It was great, you know, and it was um it was the first season, and then we uh finished it in late October, and the first episode aired in January.
• 19:22
SPEAKER_03: And we had to be under wraps, couldn't tell anyone, couldn't talk to anyone.
• 19:26
SPEAKER_03: And at this point you knew that you would I knew I was in the final two.
• 19:29
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 19:29
SPEAKER_03: The final episode was live at the Saturn Life Studio.
• 19:34
SPEAKER_03: So I had to wait until mid-April to find out if I won or not.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_03: So we finished end of October.
• 19:39
SPEAKER_03: I had to wait until mid-April if you know who he was gonna pick.
• 19:42
SPEAKER_03: So and it was me and a guy who went to Harvard.
• 19:45
SPEAKER_03: So I was this, you know, South Side, you know, small business owner, and this guy had his Bradley transfer?
• 19:52
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Bradley.
• 19:53
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he had his MBA from Harvard.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_03: He was smart guy, you know, really sharp guy, and we battled it out.
• 19:57
SPEAKER_03: And and then um we had 25 million people watching that show every week.
• 20:02
  SPEAKER_03: It was crazy.
• 20:03
SPEAKER_03: Like it was someone flipped a switch.
• 20:06
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know.
• 20:07
SPEAKER_02: And here, locally, it was like, hey, this guy is from here.
• 20:10
  SPEAKER_03: He's a Tinley dude.
• 20:12
SPEAKER_03: We used to do vi viewing parties at Ditka's, you know, um, because I was a fan, obviously.
• 20:17
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
• 20:18
SPEAKER_03: So it was great for him because he got and he would be there, he would be there.
• 20:21
SPEAKER_03: National TV would be there, you know, to these parties.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_03: It was great, you know.
• 20:25
SPEAKER_03: I wanted to support the local, you know, local businesses.
• 20:28
SPEAKER_02: What a shift for you.
• 20:29
SPEAKER_02: And now you have like a lot of decisions to make.
• 20:32
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was uh it was weird because after I won, um, I got ushered away by these handlers and I had to go on a two-week tour of press.
• 20:42
SPEAKER_03: I did the Jay Leno show and Ellen and Larry King, and I'll never forget I was ushered through JFK Airport and it was I didn't know it was like sensory overload.
• 20:54
SPEAKER_03: Like I didn't expect to have that notoriety and like they were.
• 20:57
  SPEAKER_03: So everyone recognized.
• 20:59
SPEAKER_03: I had a six it would and then when I got off the plane in LA to go do Jay Leno, they'd walk it was paparazzi.
• 21:05
SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was just like it was something that was incredible to experience.
• 21:09
SPEAKER_02: And who were you talking to or sharing this with?
• 21:11
SPEAKER_02: Like, is anyone going through this with you?
• 21:13
SPEAKER_02: Are you able to- Yeah.
• 21:15
SPEAKER_03: I had to be they I just went by myself, you know.
• 21:18
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a lie.
• 21:19
SPEAKER_03: You know, went on the Today show with the same suit that I wore for the finale of The Apprentice.
• 21:25
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
• 21:25
  SPEAKER_03: Because I I didn't know what I was doing, they didn't tell me I didn't pack properly.
• 21:29
SPEAKER_03: So literally, I didn't sleep that night.
• 21:32
SPEAKER_03: And uh and I went and did the Jay Leno show, and it was incredible because I grew up watching Carson and Leno, and here I am walking out of the curtains, like, how the hell did this happen?
• 21:43
SPEAKER_03: You know, it was just like it was it was amazing.
• 21:45
  SPEAKER_03: It was true.
• 21:46
SPEAKER_02: Not too many people have had that experience.
• 21:49
SPEAKER_02: And what are the what is the thing that you want?
• 21:51
SPEAKER_02: You want a a a job, yeah, you gotta you brought on to build Trump Tower.
• 21:55
  SPEAKER_02: Here in Chicago, right?
• 21:56
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 21:56
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 21:57
SPEAKER_02: And was there a prize too?
• 21:58
SPEAKER_02: Was there like a cash?
• 22:01
  SPEAKER_03: I got a nice salary.
• 22:02
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 22:02
SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh I got to work.
• 22:05
SPEAKER_03: Like some people get a million dollar check.
• 22:07
  SPEAKER_03: I got a job.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_02: And were you kind of like I gotta work?
• 22:09
SPEAKER_02: No, I'm waiting to learn.
• 22:11
SPEAKER_03: No, I wanted to learn a celebrity.
• 22:12
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, no, no.
• 22:13
  SPEAKER_03: I I loved it.
• 22:14
SPEAKER_03: It was I like I like the hustle.
• 22:15
  SPEAKER_03: I like learning.
• 22:16
  SPEAKER_03: I grew a lot, you know.
• 22:18
SPEAKER_03: I mean, to be able to be part of a high-rise building.
• 22:20
SPEAKER_02: And did this feel like a beginning for you?
• 22:22
SPEAKER_03: It must have felt like uh this is now I'm on a I'll never forget the night before the finale.
• 22:28
SPEAKER_03: Uh I was out in Central Park jogging with my college roommate, guy named Adam Angievsky.

• 22:42
SPEAKER_03: You know, the guy was a marathon runner.
• 22:43
SPEAKER_02: But I have a friend who just went through the exact same thing.
• 22:48
SPEAKER_02: And it is yeah, that's a PSA.
• 22:50
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, it's a hundred dollar.
• 22:55
SPEAKER_03: Colonoscopy, get your arteries checked.
• 22:57
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 22:57
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 22:57
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 22:58
SPEAKER_03: But um I went I went running in Central Park and I said, Man, if I could make this last three months, wouldn't that be something?

• 23:07
SPEAKER_03: I'm like, if I can milk this for three months, you know, and I thought that would really be incredible.
• 23:13
SPEAKER_03: You know, and then they asked me to come back on the show as a judge, and I did that for five more seasons.
• 23:19
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 23:19
SPEAKER_03: Um and it was like I'm on TV every Thursday night, like friends is our lead-in.
• 23:24

• 23:33
SPEAKER_02: And just a career change, life change.
• 23:36
SPEAKER_02: What were um what was it like, you know, being you at that time?

• 23:44
SPEAKER_03: It was I love I love people.
• 23:45
SPEAKER_03: Yeah I mean I we still go into the RPMs and me and Juliana and I view it as a privilege.
• 23:51
SPEAKER_03: You know, when I see some of these people who are in the public eye and they won't sign an autograph or take a picture, I'm like, well, you don't deserve all the other things that come with it because that's part of the program.
• 24:00
SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, I mean you're opening it in arenas and doing arena gigs, like it's it's a it's a privilege.
• 24:07
SPEAKER_03: And I was very grateful.

• 24:13
SPEAKER_03: This this shit's gonna end.
• 24:14
SPEAKER_03: And you know, I'm twenty two, three years into this, you know.
• 24:18
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 24:18
SPEAKER_03: How old were you at that time?
• 24:20
SPEAKER_03: Uh I was thirty two, I think, when I won.
• 24:23
  SPEAKER_03: Thirty-two.
• 24:23
SPEAKER_03: So I was one of the older contestants.
• 24:25
SPEAKER_03: So a lot of more in their late 30s.
• 24:26
  SPEAKER_03: That's a good age.
• 24:27
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, you know, a good head on your shoulders.
• 24:28
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 24:29
SPEAKER_03: You had the cigar experience.
• 24:31
SPEAKER_03: Yep, sold that company right before.
• 24:33
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 24:33
SPEAKER_03: Um but I was mature enough like to appreciate it, you know.
• 24:37
SPEAKER_03: Like I didn't take it for granted.
• 24:39
SPEAKER_03: I was never I hope I wasn't an a-hole to anyone, you know, along the way.
• 24:42
SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, it was You always seem comfortable in this spotlight.

  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 24:51
SPEAKER_03: The fact that you asked me to be on, I I think this is awesome.
• 24:54
SPEAKER_03: You know, like uh it's it's really fun to be able to do this and share my story.
• 24:58
SPEAKER_03: And you know, we've been able to do a lot of good along the way with it.
• 25:02
SPEAKER_03: You know, we uh my wife and I did this show called the Julianne and Bill Show on E.
• 25:05
  SPEAKER_03: We did eight seasons.
• 25:06
SPEAKER_03: Oh, dude, I watched that.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_03: But we tackled really important issues like her breast cancer, infertility.
• 25:11
SPEAKER_03: We did a bunch of mission trips to Haiti, you know, and even to this day, someone will stop us and they'll say, you know, my wife got a mammogram because she watched the Julianne and Bill show, or my mom and dad now know what we're going through with infertility.
• 25:24
SPEAKER_03: Because when we were talking about it, it was taboo.
• 25:27
SPEAKER_03: Like people would whisper in the airports, like, I've got infertility too.
• 25:31
SPEAKER_03: And now they're shouting, Yeah, I went to the same doctor, Dr.
• 25:34
SPEAKER_03: Schoolcraft in Denver, he got us pregnant.
• 25:36
SPEAKER_02: It's like that is a generational thing, too.
• 25:38
SPEAKER_02: Like people talking about like we're trying.
• 25:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there was shame in it.
• 25:42
SPEAKER_02: Now people yeah, yeah, 20 weeks ago.
• 25:44
  SPEAKER_02: Very secretive.
• 25:44
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it was crazy.
• 25:46
SPEAKER_02: And that's how you got your son.
• 25:47
SPEAKER_02: That's how we got my son.
• 25:48
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 25:49
  SPEAKER_03: Greatest thing ever.
• 25:50
SPEAKER_03: And how old is he now?
• 25:51
  SPEAKER_03: He's 13.
• 25:51
  SPEAKER_03: 13.
• 25:52
SPEAKER_03: We wear the same shoe size.
• 25:53
  SPEAKER_03: Do you really?
• 25:54
  SPEAKER_03: These are his shoes.
• 25:56
SPEAKER_03: Like he suckered me into buying these fancy shoes.
• 25:58
SPEAKER_03: Bill, you were doing so well just a second ago.
• 26:00
SPEAKER_02: Heard about all this job, salary.
• 26:04
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
• 26:05
SPEAKER_02: And you got your son's shoes on.
• 26:06
  SPEAKER_03: I'm wearing his shoes.
• 26:07
  SPEAKER_03: They're they're fancy.
• 26:08
  SPEAKER_03: So he's a big boy then.
• 26:09
  SPEAKER_02: How tall is he?
• 26:10
  SPEAKER_02: Uh he's five'eight.
• 26:11
  SPEAKER_02: Wow.
• 26:12
SPEAKER_02: Oh, so he's got some more height to go.
• 26:13
SPEAKER_02: He's got more height to go.
• 26:14
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 26:14
  SPEAKER_02: And he's 11 men's shoe already.
• 26:16
SPEAKER_02: And his name is Duke.
• 26:17
  SPEAKER_02: Duke.
• 26:17
  SPEAKER_02: That's a man's name.
• 26:19
  SPEAKER_02: Edward Duke.
• 26:20
  SPEAKER_02: Edward Duke.
• 26:20
  SPEAKER_02: Edward Duke, yeah.
• 26:21
SPEAKER_02: That is very uh that sounds very British.
• 26:23
  SPEAKER_02: Versatile.
• 26:23
SPEAKER_03: Very uh He can be a quarterback or a CEO.
• 26:25
  SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have a kingdom.
• 26:27
  SPEAKER_03: He's a quarterback, it'll be Duke Rancick.
• 26:29
  SPEAKER_03: If he's a CEO, it'll be Edward.
• 26:30
SPEAKER_03: Is he named after my dad?
• 26:32
  SPEAKER_03: Your dad.
• 26:32
  SPEAKER_03: And Juliana's dad.
• 26:33
SPEAKER_03: They're both named my dad's name is Edward Rancick, and my father-in-law is Eduardo Depandy.
• 26:38
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow, that's funny.
• 26:39
SPEAKER_03: So we kind of killed two birds with that.
• 26:40
SPEAKER_03: And then where'd you come up with Duke?
• 26:42
SPEAKER_03: My sister Karen, who lives in Burr Ridge, her middle child is named Luke.
• 26:46
  SPEAKER_03: And uh I got a Luke.
• 26:48
  SPEAKER_03: You do?
• 26:48
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 26:49
SPEAKER_03: Just uh really sharp guy, went to Michigan, and uh we used to call him Luke the Duke.
• 26:53
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
• 26:54
SPEAKER_03: And uh we just kind of like the name Duke, and we're like, well.
• 26:56
SPEAKER_02: You call this one Duke the Luke?
• 26:58
  SPEAKER_02: Uh we should, right?
• 26:59
  SPEAKER_02: Duke Luke forensic, yeah.
• 27:00
  SPEAKER_02: Dude, that's fun.
• 27:01
SPEAKER_02: I mean and now, you know, this path that you've been on since that that moment, it must have taken you to meet your wife.
• 27:08
SPEAKER_02: And I know a lot of people know Juliana and uh you know getting the chance to meet her, she's so sweet.
• 27:13
SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I mean, what a uh that must have been, you know, now you're meeting a celebrity, you're meeting someone.
• 27:19
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 27:19
SPEAKER_02: How did where did you get?
• 27:20
  SPEAKER_03: She interviewed me.
• 27:21
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
• 27:22
SPEAKER_03: So in the five seasons I was on as a judge, um, I would do the shows that Trump wouldn't do.
• 27:29
SPEAKER_03: So he would do the Ten Aid Show and the Tiddy, and I would do like Axis Hollywood and and E and the Pat McGann show.
• 27:35
  SPEAKER_03: Pat McGann show, right?
• 27:37
SPEAKER_03: But we were promoting the upcoming season of the show, and and I was um I'd done a deal with the folks at Ace Hardware here.
• 27:44
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 27:45
SPEAKER_03: Uh where I was going around renovating boys and girls clubs.
• 27:48
SPEAKER_03: So they were funding these renovations.
• 27:50
SPEAKER_02: And I was you think you'll be canonized eventually.
• 27:52
  SPEAKER_03: Oh god, no.
• 27:53
  unknown: Come on.
• 27:54
  SPEAKER_03: Uh somebody's rescuing somebody.
• 27:55
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, no, no.
• 27:56
SPEAKER_03: It was fun for me.
• 27:57
SPEAKER_03: And and and uh they appeared on an episode of The Apprentice, um, the folks from Ace Hardware.
• 28:03
SPEAKER_03: And uh I did 10 uh boys and girls clubs around the country, and we were just finishing the tour renovating these clubs, and Juliana came to interview me.
• 28:12
SPEAKER_03: And she always tells the story.
• 28:13
SPEAKER_03: Right before she was leaving for the interview, she did what any hard-hitting journalist would do.
• 28:17
SPEAKER_03: She Googled Bill Rant's a girlfriend, and a picture of me and this girl popped up.
• 28:21
SPEAKER_03: And she wanted to cancel the interview.
• 28:23
SPEAKER_03: The boss was like, You gotta go, committed.
• 28:25
SPEAKER_03: And then she went and she starts interviewing me, and she says, You know, Donald Trump is getting married.
• 28:30
SPEAKER_03: Um, are you and your girlfriend gonna get married anytime soon?
• 28:33
SPEAKER_03: And I stopped and I said, Well, we broke up a couple months ago.
• 28:36
  SPEAKER_03: Like, no.
• 28:37
SPEAKER_03: And then her whole demeanor changed.
• 28:38
  SPEAKER_03: Really?
• 28:39
SPEAKER_03: It was the most miraculous transformation I'd ever seen a human being make.
• 28:42
  SPEAKER_03: Her arms became unfolded.
• 28:44
  SPEAKER_03: It's all in camera.
• 28:46
  SPEAKER_03: She starts touching me.
• 28:47
SPEAKER_03: But it's a little bit simple on camera.
• 28:48
  SPEAKER_03: Really?
• 28:48
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah, no, it's it's amazing.
• 28:51
SPEAKER_00: Women want to know, Bill.
• 28:53
SPEAKER_00: Like I wanna know here, you know.
• 28:56
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's been a it's been a good year.
• 28:59
  SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
• 28:59
  SPEAKER_03: I'm you know, I'm 33.
• 29:05
SPEAKER_03: Maybe those young guys, right?
• 29:07
  SPEAKER_03: California surfers.
• 29:10
  SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
• 29:11
  SPEAKER_00: I'm like a businessman.
• 29:12
  SPEAKER_00: Really?
• 29:12
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, no, you're great.
• 29:14
  SPEAKER_00: We're just very busy.
• 29:15
  SPEAKER_00: Very busy.
• 29:16
SPEAKER_03: So and that was and I asked her if she wanted to go for a jog sometime, because I knew she was a runner.
• 29:21
SPEAKER_03: And then she said, How about dinner instead of your move?
• 29:25
SPEAKER_03: You know, like I grew up with three older sisters and I never wanted to be that cheesy guy.
• 29:28
SPEAKER_03: Like, that is a good date, first date.
• 29:31
SPEAKER_02: Like, you want to go for a jog and then just go just start running faster.
• 29:35
SPEAKER_02: I'll go left, you go right.
• 29:37
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 29:38
SPEAKER_04: Teege Hanley has changed my life.
• 29:41
  SPEAKER_03: Skin has been amazing.
• 29:42
SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America.
• 29:47
SPEAKER_03: When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest.
• 29:50
SPEAKER_02: We know you're here for pictures.
• 29:52
SPEAKER_02: You thought you were a model?
• 29:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you guys, he's glowing.
• 29:54
SPEAKER_01: In fact, Ape Burgazzi was like, Your skin's awesome.
• 29:57
SPEAKER_02: Just like, I look forward to like I'm washing my face before I go to sleep.
• 30:00
  SPEAKER_02: I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said, I'm 50.
• 30:04
  SPEAKER_02: And everyone goes, What?
• 30:05
  SPEAKER_03: T Shanley.
• 30:06
SPEAKER_02: It's the way we face the day.
• 30:10
SPEAKER_03: So that was our that was our first date, and it was uh What year is this?
• 30:13
  SPEAKER_03: 20 years ago.
• 30:14
  SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
• 30:15
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was uh oh six, yeah.
• 30:19
SPEAKER_02: And how long were you together before you got married?
• 30:21
SPEAKER_03: Uh we got engaged after 10 months, and then we got married a year ago.
• 30:24
SPEAKER_02: Was it a special engagement to do anything like I did?
• 30:27
  SPEAKER_03: What'd you do?
• 30:28
SPEAKER_03: Um She was flying to we were long distance.
• 30:31
SPEAKER_03: She was living in LA, and I I wanted to live here, so we would go see each other on the weekends or whenever we had to do that.
• 30:36
SPEAKER_03: I have that going on right now, long distance.
• 30:37
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
• 30:38
SPEAKER_03: That's actually kind of nice.
• 30:39
SPEAKER_03: I mean you appreciate each other, right?
• 30:41
  SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
• 30:42
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
• 30:42
SPEAKER_03: It is and she landed at O'Hare and I said, Hey, I I have to go do a speech in Detroit, but I'll get home later tonight.
• 30:48
SPEAKER_03: I said, But I'm gonna send a car to pick you up and take you to the house.
• 30:52
SPEAKER_03: And the car picked her up and uh she thought she was getting kidnapped because he veered off the highway, and he took her to the helipad at O'Hare.
• 31:01
SPEAKER_03: And uh this was December 15th, and uh I was waiting in the helicopter with Giordano's pizza and champagne, and we went up and looked at the Christmas lights on Michigan Avenue and everything in a helicopter, and I proposed to her in the helicopter overlooking Chicago and lights on Michigan Avenue.
• 31:17
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
• 31:17
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're like making up for not being on The Bachelor.
• 31:20
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, it was it was fun.
• 31:21
SPEAKER_03: Getting in the guy gave me a good deal.
• 31:23
SPEAKER_03: The local helicopter guy gave me a good deal.
• 31:26
SPEAKER_03: So it's like one hour.
• 31:27
  SPEAKER_03: That's all right.
• 31:29
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, above Chicago.
• 31:31
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, looking at all the lights and everything.
• 31:32
  SPEAKER_02: It was really cool.
• 31:33
SPEAKER_02: Do you think that's how you help you know, got her to move here?
• 31:37
SPEAKER_02: Was that part of you had to get her to fall in love with this city?
• 31:40
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was pre-negotiated.
• 31:42
SPEAKER_03: Like I'm not an LA guy, you know.
• 31:44
  SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's not my thing.
• 31:45
SPEAKER_03: And I wound up living part-time there for, you know, ten years for her career and everything.
• 31:50
SPEAKER_03: But then when Duke was born, we're like, we're gonna we're gonna move to Chicago and family and just Midwestern values, you know.
• 31:57
  SPEAKER_02: That's awesome, dude.
• 31:58
SPEAKER_02: And uh you now you have so much going on here.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_02: You mentioned being uh partners with the Melmans.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_02: Now, when your show was on E, the part of the story was you're gonna open a restaurant, right?
• 32:09
  SPEAKER_02: The Italian place.
• 32:10
SPEAKER_02: I know that Giuliana's parents were involved.
• 32:12
SPEAKER_02: She actually had the her mom's dish.
• 32:14
SPEAKER_02: It's still on the menu, right?
• 32:15
SPEAKER_02: It's the number one seller.
• 32:16
  SPEAKER_02: Is it really?
• 32:16
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, every night.
• 32:17
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Mama DePandy's uh Bucca Tini Pomodoro.
• 32:20
  SPEAKER_02: And what's the dish?
• 32:21
SPEAKER_03: It's a pomodoro noodle with this bucottini sauce that she made famous.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_03: Um and uh it's incredible.
• 32:29
SPEAKER_03: Like the whole reason we wanted to start a restaurant is whenever her mom would come in to visit, everyone would want to come to our house for dinner because she would make these beautiful dishes.
• 32:38
SPEAKER_03: So we had all the recipes.
• 32:39
SPEAKER_03: And uh I wanted to open a small restaurant up in like Southport.
• 32:43
SPEAKER_03: I'm like, this is I knew this was a horrible investment, but like restaurants fail.
• 32:47
SPEAKER_03: So I was just trying to kind of kick the can down the road a little bit, and we started looking at spaces.
• 32:52
SPEAKER_03: And then I hate to be a name-dropper, but we were out with Greg Olson and his wife Kara.
• 32:57
SPEAKER_03: And we're at dinner one night, and uh Julian is going on and on.
• 33:01
SPEAKER_03: Oh, Bill and I are opening up a restaurant and it's gonna be written.
• 33:03
  SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, No, we're not.
• 33:06
  SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm I'm not a fool.
• 33:07
SPEAKER_03: And he says, Well, you should talk to my friend RJ and Jared Amolly.
• 33:10
SPEAKER_03: Like, they want to open up an Italian restaurant too.
• 33:13
SPEAKER_03: And for those of you who don't know, um, RJ and Jared and Molly Melman are the uh sons and daughters of Rich Melman, who started Let Us Entertain You 54 years ago with RJ Grunts, and now they were kind of going out on their own.
• 33:25
SPEAKER_03: And we uh had a meeting and we kind of courted each other for a year, and we opened up RPM Italian on the corner of Illinois and Dearborn 16 years ago.
• 33:34
SPEAKER_02: I remember it well, man.
• 33:35
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 33:36
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I remember watching it all come to life through the show, and then like knowing RJ and Jared, and um man, that is taking off.
• 33:43
SPEAKER_02: Now you have well then it gave birth to RPM stake, yep.
• 33:47
SPEAKER_02: Which is uh, you know, now it's all over the country as well.
• 33:50
SPEAKER_03: We have nine uh we have nine restaurants around the country.
• 33:54
SPEAKER_03: We have them in Vegas, so we have RPM Italian in Vegas.
• 33:56
SPEAKER_03: We're in the process of building RPM Steak in Vegas.
• 33:59
SPEAKER_03: We have I'm sorry, DC.
• 34:01
SPEAKER_03: We have RPM Italian and DC, RPM stakes under construction.
• 34:04
SPEAKER_03: We have RPM Italian in Vegas at Caesars.
• 34:07
SPEAKER_03: Um we have five iterations of RPM here.
• 34:10
SPEAKER_03: So we have steak, seafood, Italian, Portofino, and events.
• 34:14
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, right.
• 34:15
SPEAKER_03: And then we're working on a couple other locations.
• 34:16
SPEAKER_03: We're we're working on West Palm Beach and Orlando.
• 34:20
SPEAKER_02: Oh, is that in the works?
• 34:21
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're negotiating.
• 34:22
  SPEAKER_03: Dude.
• 34:23
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so we're we're blowing up.
• 34:25
  SPEAKER_03: They've been great partners.
• 34:26
  SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, they're amazing.
• 34:27
SPEAKER_02: We had RJ and Jared on here.
• 34:29
SPEAKER_02: Oh, you didn'to long ago, yeah.
• 34:30
SPEAKER_02: I mean, again, like I always say, let us entertain you and Rich Melman.
• 34:34
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's almost like understated how much of a contribution they've had, not only to the city, but now the whole country, the whole food scene.
• 34:42
SPEAKER_03: They're just good people, they're like family.
• 34:44
SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're we vacation together, you know, we've like we they're great people, just honorable, hardworking.
• 34:51
SPEAKER_03: You know, and they grew up with a successful father, and a lot of times that doesn't carry over.
• 34:56
SPEAKER_03: And they are they are hard workers, you know.
• 34:58
SPEAKER_03: I mean, Molly does all the education, and Jerry, they they just they don't stop working.
• 35:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they knock it out and they take care of the people that work for them, which which is huge.
• 35:07
  SPEAKER_02: We love that.
• 35:08
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 35:08
SPEAKER_02: You guys are uh on the ball with that.
• 35:10
SPEAKER_02: So you're working, you're busy all the time, but you're also a dad, and you're you gotta have fun sometimes.
• 35:16
SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you doing?
• 35:17
SPEAKER_02: Like I met you at a comedy show.
• 35:18
SPEAKER_02: Are you a big comedy fan?
• 35:20
  SPEAKER_02: Love comedy, yeah.
• 35:20
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
• 35:21
SPEAKER_02: You're I mean Who are you watching though?
• 35:23
SPEAKER_02: You watching some uh any stand-up, any shows?
• 35:26
SPEAKER_03: I gotta tell you, I just went and saw uh Zach Bryan at Notre Dame.
• 35:31
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
• 35:32
SPEAKER_03: And oh yeah, Shane Gillis.
• 35:34
SPEAKER_03: Shane Gillis opened up and I'm sitting with a couple of guys who are on the board of trustees at Notre Dame.
• 35:41
  SPEAKER_03: And his opening act.
• 35:42
  SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02: And you're taking him on the road as much as you can too.
• 36:54

• 38:25
  SPEAKER_02: I hope so.
• 38:26
  SPEAKER_03: One day.
• 38:27
SPEAKER_03: Boy, they charge like$30 for a hamburger there.
• 38:29
  SPEAKER_03: It's a good thing.
• 38:30
SPEAKER_02: Oh man, that charge the room thing is it's dangerous for especially for me.
• 38:34
SPEAKER_02: You checked out a few drinks, you feel like you know, invincible.
• 38:38
  SPEAKER_02: Put it on.
• 38:40
  SPEAKER_02: Go.

SPEAKER_02: And then we did the dolphin experience.
• 38:42
  SPEAKER_02: Did you do that?

  SPEAKER_02: Oh, I did that.
• 38:47
  SPEAKER_02: You did do that.
• 38:48
SPEAKER_02: Oh, you picked the pig over the dolphin.
• 38:50
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, it was a choice.
• 38:51
  SPEAKER_02: I next to someone.
• 38:52
  SPEAKER_03: I took the dolphin.

  SPEAKER_03: I did a little bit, yeah.
• 39:40
  SPEAKER_03: It's incredible.
• 39:41
  SPEAKER_03: I mean they're a great team, too.
• 39:42
SPEAKER_02: There's just so Yeah, is this like a piece of uh a company that you would talk to with NASA bring you in?
• 39:48
SPEAKER_02: Because that's something you do too.

SPEAKER_02: What's your uh do you have like an outline speech that you give every time?
• 39:55
  SPEAKER_03: I've got a handful.

• 40:10
  SPEAKER_02: I did that, gay.
• 40:11
  SPEAKER_03: You did?
• 40:12
  SPEAKER_03: No, no.
• 40:12
  SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
• 40:13
  SPEAKER_03: It was I'm like, I'll go.
• 40:15
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
• 40:15
SPEAKER_03: And uh I went with Neil Armstrong.
• 40:17
  SPEAKER_03: Holy cow.
• 40:18
SPEAKER_03: And I spent five days in Kuala Lumpur with Neil Armstrong.
• 40:22
SPEAKER_03: We had dinner every night together.
• 40:24
SPEAKER_03: I was dating, I wasn't married at the time.
• 40:25
SPEAKER_03: I brought this girl in, she would always be late, and the guy from the lobby would be like, Mr.
• 40:28
  SPEAKER_03: Armstrong's waiting for you.
• 40:29
SPEAKER_03: I'm like, Oh my god.
• 40:31
  SPEAKER_03: We gotta go.
• 40:32
SPEAKER_03: Like, um and who's this girl?
• 40:35
SPEAKER_03: Like she's keeping you and Neil Armstrong waiting.
• 40:39
SPEAKER_03: Like, but it was I it was weird.
• 40:42
SPEAKER_03: Like, I couldn't believe that this was happening to me, right?
• 40:44
SPEAKER_03: I'm like from Orland Park.
• 40:46
SPEAKER_02: And I'm having a And you don't even believe in the Moonlanding, right?
• 40:49
  SPEAKER_03: Oh no, I do.
• 40:50
  SPEAKER_03: He was awesome.
• 40:51
SPEAKER_03: He uh we talked all about it, like yeah.
• 40:53
SPEAKER_02: There are a lot of people a growing number.
• 40:56
  SPEAKER_03: Great.
• 40:56
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I know.
• 40:57
SPEAKER_03: I know some people that don't believe in it.
• 40:59
SPEAKER_02: But wow, dude, did you ever imagine?
• 41:01
SPEAKER_03: One of the greatest What would you talk to him about?
• 41:04
  SPEAKER_03: I'm a huge aviation fan.
• 41:06
SPEAKER_03: I love aviation, I love all the learning about the rockets and this guy he can fly anything from a 747 to like he was test he told me his whole life.
• 41:16
SPEAKER_03: He felt like he was on a skateboard with you, probably.
• 41:18
  SPEAKER_03: That plane.
• 41:19
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but he was like the nicest, kindest, like just wanted to he was by himself, didn't travel with an entourage, you know.
• 41:26
SPEAKER_03: Um you see a lot of these people, they have you know.
• 41:29
SPEAKER_02: I was gonna call him a lunar.
• 41:30
  SPEAKER_02: Instead of a loner.
• 41:32
  SPEAKER_02: He's a lunar.
• 41:33
  SPEAKER_02: Alright, I don't know.
• 41:34
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 41:34
SPEAKER_02: All right, but anyway, yeah, that has got to be like pinch me a little bit.
• 41:38
SPEAKER_02: Like, is that one of your do you have a list of I do.
• 41:42
  SPEAKER_02: Okay, so Neil Armstrong.
• 41:43
  SPEAKER_03: Yep.
• 41:43
SPEAKER_03: I got to fly with the Air Force Thunderbirds at the Aaron Water show.
• 41:46
  SPEAKER_03: I did 9.3 G's.
• 41:48
SPEAKER_03: It was like Did you get sick?
• 41:51
  SPEAKER_02: Pass out?
• 41:52
  SPEAKER_03: Uh I didn't pass out.
• 41:53
SPEAKER_03: I did fill up the bags and and a glove.
• 41:56
  SPEAKER_02: Really?
• 41:56
SPEAKER_03: Because I ran out of bags, and then I'm like, I can't.
• 41:59
SPEAKER_02: But are you enjoying it in a way too?
• 42:01
  SPEAKER_03: Like, keep going?
• 42:02
SPEAKER_03: I'm like, he's like, How you doing back there?
• 42:03
  SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I'm great, man.
• 42:05
  SPEAKER_03: I'm great.
• 42:05
SPEAKER_03: I didn't want it to end, you know.
• 42:07
  SPEAKER_03: Really?
• 42:07
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 42:07
SPEAKER_03: But I was definitely But don't you have it?
• 42:09
SPEAKER_03: You want it to have a mask on?
• 42:10
  SPEAKER_03: I did.
• 42:10
SPEAKER_03: I would rip it off every time.
• 42:11
SPEAKER_02: Rip it, throw it, and then put it back on.
• 42:13
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 42:13
  SPEAKER_03: That's good proof.
• 42:14
SPEAKER_03: It was really it was incredible.
• 42:16
  SPEAKER_02: Dude, what a life.
• 42:17
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 42:17
SPEAKER_02: So I mean what else is on your uh that's high up on there?
• 42:21
SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously the birth of my son and getting married, you know.
• 42:24
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
• 42:25
SPEAKER_03: But it was those are given.
• 42:27
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but you know, a a lot of my life wouldn't have happened had I not taken a risk.
• 42:31
SPEAKER_03: You know, like this thing could have been a bust, you know, it could have been a horrible show, and I could have been, you know, uh someone was like, What are you doing?
• 42:41
SPEAKER_03: Like you're going on a reality show, like this is the dumbest thing you could ever do.
• 42:44
  SPEAKER_03: You have you're a businessman.
• 42:45
SPEAKER_03: And I just had a gut feeling like this is something kind of cool, and why not?
• 42:49
SPEAKER_03: You know, my dad had just died.
• 42:51
SPEAKER_03: I was kind of in this phase of like I'm gonna live let my dad live vicariously through me, and I yeah, I just said I'm gonna I'm gonna go for it.
• 42:59
SPEAKER_02: So do you talk about that in your when you are out?
• 43:02
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
• 43:03
  SPEAKER_02: That's inspiring, dude.
• 43:04
  SPEAKER_03: That's real stuff too.
• 43:05
SPEAKER_03: You gotta take risks in life.
• 43:06
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 43:06
SPEAKER_03: You know, if you don't, you're you're never gonna get anywhere.
• 43:08
  SPEAKER_03: You're gonna have regret.
• 43:10
SPEAKER_03: You know, like I think that's the worst thing you could do when you look back on the end of your career and you have analysis paralysis, like do I stay on land or do I go to sea?
• 43:19
SPEAKER_03: And you you never get anywhere, you know.
• 43:22
SPEAKER_03: And I think sometimes a bad decision is better than indecision, you know, because you at least grow from the mistake.
• 43:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, action is always maybe better than inaction.
• 43:31
SPEAKER_02: Like you gotta keep moving and and dude, you've done so much that I feel like a lot of people probably have forgotten the origin story in a way.
• 43:40
SPEAKER_02: And where did you get your start?
• 43:42
SPEAKER_02: Because you've done so much and kind of moved beyond um those original building blocks, which were great and and and huge.
• 43:51
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 43:51
SPEAKER_02: Uh but to see you keep going, uh It's been fun.
• 43:54
SPEAKER_02: Proud to know you, dude.
• 43:55
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, you too.
• 43:56
SPEAKER_03: Your career is incredible too.
• 43:58
  SPEAKER_03: I mean, let's talk about you.
• 44:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, but that's good.
• 44:01
SPEAKER_02: No, but like not on my show.
• 44:03
SPEAKER_02: How how nervous do you get?
• 44:04
SPEAKER_02: Like I get uh yeah, a little bit.
• 44:06
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 44:07
SPEAKER_02: I get fired up um for or when I say fired up, I get like I feel it when I'm doing new stuff, or if there's like stakes.
• 44:14
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 44:14
  SPEAKER_02: You know?
• 44:15
SPEAKER_02: Like I'm sure when you're going into uh a speaking event, you get juiced up, you get you're you're fired up, you're ready, you're not necessarily nervous because you know what you're gonna do.
• 44:23
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 44:23
SPEAKER_02: You're ready for the unexpected, you're more amped than anything.
• 44:27
SPEAKER_02: I prefer the bigger crowds than the smaller crowds.
• 44:29
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 44:30
  SPEAKER_03: Like if I do a f a corporate gig and it's 40 people, I'm like, oh man, it's hard.
• 44:34
  SPEAKER_03: Right.
• 44:34
SPEAKER_03: Because if things don't hit, like you know, at least when you have a couple thousand people in the room, chances are you're gonna get a hand, like you're gonna get someone some people, you know.
• 44:45
SPEAKER_03: So yeah, but the smaller ones are hard.
• 44:47
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that it's um always like the preparation part of it.
• 44:51
SPEAKER_02: Um, are you still going on like auditions?
• 44:55
SPEAKER_02: Do you have anything like that?
• 44:57
SPEAKER_02: Like where you want to pursue any not really, you got the presence you wouldn't want to do.
• 45:03
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I were you done hosting and stuff.
• 45:05
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we we did we hosted me and Julianna hosted a dating show for NBC.
• 45:09
SPEAKER_03: It was called Ready for Love, and it got canceled after four episodes.
• 45:13
SPEAKER_03: They moved it to streaming.
• 45:14
  SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
• 45:15
SPEAKER_03: But it was it was this big live show, and I thought it was gonna be my ticket to retirement.
• 45:19
SPEAKER_03: I'm like, this is my American Idol.
• 45:21
  SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
• 45:22
SPEAKER_03: We had um they were spending like four million dollars an episode on it.
• 45:25
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, which is huge.
• 45:26
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we had a live audience of hundreds, we had three matchmakers, me and Joanna were the hosts, we had three bachelors, and we had like there were like 25 girls.
• 45:36
SPEAKER_03: And it was just like as hosts, I didn't even know what the hell was going on.
• 45:39
SPEAKER_03: It was so confusing, and then I'm like, oh boy.
• 45:41
SPEAKER_03: So it was I thought it was gonna be my ticket to you know, like my star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you know, like Seacrest, Dick Clark, you know.
• 45:50
SPEAKER_03: And then after four episodes, I I watched, I was reading Twitter and it I learned on Twitter that they were canceling the show.
• 45:56
SPEAKER_02: That's how you found out?
• 45:58
  SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
• 45:58
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 45:59
SPEAKER_03: But I do a show on History Channel now called The Mega Brands That Built America.
• 46:02
  SPEAKER_03: It's on Sundays.
• 46:04
  SPEAKER_03: Um I've seen that.
• 46:05
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, learn you kind of learn about the different brands that you know from GMs.
• 46:08
  SPEAKER_03: I love those shows.
• 46:09
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 46:12
SPEAKER_03: For me, because I have to learn about all these companies.
• 46:13
SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of in that vein of the uh the products that built America.
• 46:16
SPEAKER_02: It's similar to mega brands that built it.
• 46:19
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's great, too.
• 46:20
SPEAKER_03: So I get to do that and that's fun.
• 46:22
  SPEAKER_02: And you've written books.
• 46:23
  SPEAKER_02: You're a New York Times bestseller.
• 46:25
  SPEAKER_02: I am.
• 46:25
  SPEAKER_02: Are you still writing?
• 46:27
  SPEAKER_03: No.
• 46:27
  SPEAKER_03: That business has changed.
• 46:29
SPEAKER_03: You know, I know people don't read books anymore.
• 46:31
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 46:31
  SPEAKER_03: It's hard.
• 46:32
SPEAKER_03: It's hard to get books sold.
• 46:34
SPEAKER_03: And you know, back when I wrote my first book, it was How long did it take you to write a book?
• 46:38
SPEAKER_03: Uh that one took about five months, you know, to put like on airplanes, and and I had someone help me.
