- 0:16Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Road rage at traffic stops is apparently getting out of control.
- 0:19Speaker 3: A new sector survey shows that two thirds of New
- 0:22Speaker 3: Zealand's traffic controllers a coppying abuse on a weekly basis,
- 0:25Speaker 3: and one in five traffic workers one in five have
- 0:28Speaker 3: been physically assaulted in the last year, with some even
- 0:30Speaker 3: being struck by vehicles. Now, Hugh Gotad as the owner
- 0:33Speaker 3: of Pipeline and Civil, which is a maintenance and repair
- 0:36Speaker 3: company and with us.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Now, hey Hugh, Hey there, Heather, thanks for having me one,
- 0:40Speaker 2: thanks for joining us.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Have your workers experienced this kind of thing?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a real challenge out there across the wide
- 0:48Speaker 4: industry as well as an Arab business.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So, I mean we've had staff being yelled at.
- 0:53Speaker 4: You know, almost hit you know, by vehicles on the road,
- 0:56Speaker 4: and and even you know, to the point of almost
- 0:59Speaker 4: physical abuse.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Certainly a lot of verbal abuse.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Drivers moving cons into live lanes while cars are coming
- 1:06Speaker 4: in the other way.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Just quite challenge of behavior out there.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Is it as like as frequently as the survey suggests.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I think, you know, I wasn't involved in development the survey,
- 1:19Speaker 4: but I know over seven hundred TTM workers in New
- 1:21Speaker 4: Zealand responded to the survey, which is which is a
- 1:24Speaker 4: significant sample, and and that's the feedback that's coming through.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So it's very much a real issue.
- 1:29Speaker 3: What's causing it? Why are people behaving like this?
- 1:33Speaker 4: Well, I just wonder whether I mean, there's obviously been
- 1:36Speaker 4: a big discussion topic in the media and in the
- 1:38Speaker 4: public around heavy traffic management, and you know, you know,
- 1:42Speaker 4: people are frustrated, which which is totally understandable. You know,
- 1:47Speaker 4: they see you know, cons and and they obviously see
- 1:50Speaker 4: red at the same time.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And I think it's you know, it is a challenge
- 1:53Speaker 2: out there, but I.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Think it's sort of trying to reframe this thinking to
- 1:57Speaker 4: look at investment and infrastructure as a positive and roadworks
- 2:00Speaker 4: as being part of that.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Okay, is it So? Are you saying it's just a
- 2:04Speaker 3: general frustration with the sheer number of cones that we
- 2:06Speaker 3: see rather than something that that particular road worker is doing.
- 2:10Speaker 3: All that particular is happening at that particular site.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I believe.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So I think that, you know, and there's also I
- 2:16Speaker 4: guess challenges around you know, whether.
- 2:18Speaker 2: The site is active. You know, could be a night.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Work site that's just being maintained during the day and
- 2:22Speaker 4: they and they obviously can't they have to leave the
- 2:25Speaker 4: TTM equipment on the road, so you know, they think
- 2:29Speaker 4: nothing's happening, but actually, you know, there are works occurring,
- 2:32Speaker 4: or you know this the ship seal of the surfacing
- 2:34Speaker 4: is being is curing or things like that, which which
- 2:37Speaker 4: obviously can't cause frustration, especially if they don't see things
- 2:41Speaker 4: happening at that moment in time.
- 2:43Speaker 2: But it's certainly I mean, these are real people.
- 2:45Speaker 4: They're like you or I, trying to do a job,
- 2:48Speaker 4: trying to earn a cross, to feed their families. You know,
- 2:50Speaker 4: they're not going out of their way to you know,
- 2:53Speaker 4: stop people getting to them from work or affect their lives.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I'd like to think that most people are actually decent,
- 2:59Speaker 3: maybe a little frustrated, but decent about it and understanding
- 3:02Speaker 3: it's just a few bad eggs letting us down.
- 3:03Speaker 4: What do you think, Well, I think that's certain an aspect,
- 3:09Speaker 4: but the volume of ROLD work abuse has definitely seen
- 3:12Speaker 4: an increase, and I think it's an area that needs
- 3:14Speaker 4: to be addressed and we need public support in doing that.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, Hugh, it's good to talk to you. Thank you
- 3:19Speaker 3: very much. Appreciate it, mate. That's you got to add
- 3:21Speaker 3: Pipeline and Civil Limited owner.
