- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike Christino
- 0:03here in the Huskies three and oh, fifth in the country right now and
- 0:07looking ahead to Indiana. We're going to get into them a little bit,
- 0:10but first to kind of summon up what's happened so far. Coach Tristan Newton
- 0:15the other night, you know, two for six from the field, ends
- 0:18up with ten points late in the game. I started saying, you know,
- 0:22he might end up with a triple double. He ends up with eight
- 0:24rebounds, he gets seven assists. He's kind of sneaky good like that,
- 0:28isn't he. Yeah, you know, Tristan is an excellent you know,
- 0:32defensive rebounder, you know, for you know, for a guard that plays
- 0:37on the ball and really really gets on the defensive glass and you know and
- 0:43the offensive glass. And you know, he's got good offensive players around him.
- 0:48So you know, he's swinging the ball to guys like Cam and Alex
- 0:53that that could that could really shoot, and he's he's throwing the ball at
- 0:57the rim to guys like Samson and Donovan who could really finish. So you
- 1:02know, Tristan's got to play at at an all conference level for this thing
- 1:06to work this year. And you know, I think he's gotten off to
- 1:10a good start. I wish you would have been sharper on Tuesday, but
- 1:15you know, and obviously he's got We've got a big one on Sunday.
- 1:19The zone that Mississippi Valley threw at you for most of the night, do
- 1:23you expect you're going to see more of that going forward, challenging your team
- 1:27to make threes or what? Do you think? I think it was,
- 1:33you know, for them, I think it was just we're gonna play a
- 1:37really big lineup and we're gonna do everything that you can to to make sure
- 1:44that you can't get the ball in the paint. So I don't think we'll
- 1:49see another defense quite played like that because most of the teams are gonna play
- 1:55against it. They don't guard like that. They you know, they play
- 1:57man defense, or they may play some zone. You know. Plus,
- 2:04we were you know, our issues were not necessarily against the zone. You
- 2:09know, we shot, I think we shot close to fifty four percent,
- 2:13We had twenty assists. Our issues are probably more so just turning the ball
- 2:16over and we might have taken a couple of bad, bad threes. But
- 2:23for the most part we got rim two's and we got and we got threes,
- 2:27which is where we want to be. Yeah, twenty eight three point
- 2:30attempts, fifty three shots. Overall, you had to love what you saw
- 2:35from Cam Spencer. Obviously we know he can shoot it. It was just
- 2:38good to see the ball going in. I mean the basket must have seemed
- 2:43pretty big to him. We talked to him after the game and he was
- 2:46he was happy to be comfortable, it seemed taking those shots. Yeah,
- 2:50he's we see that every day, so that there's you know, he might
- 2:53have pressed a little bit in game two, But internally here I don't think
- 2:59that of the things that we have confidence in. I think one of the
- 3:04things that we hang our hat on and have confidence in is in Cam and
- 3:07whether Cam is going to show up this year for us. So I think
- 3:14he's gonna he's gonna have a great year. I think he fits perfectly next
- 3:17to, you know, next to Tristan in the back court with with the
- 3:22young Steph and and and a veteran front court. Well, Steph Castle couldn't
- 3:27play in the game, a little bit of a knee issue. Anything new
- 3:30on that, how how is he Is he going to be able to go
- 3:32on the weekend, do you think or where are you at with him?
- 3:36Yeah? I think we'll know more as we get towards later in a week
- 3:40in terms of what the timeline is going to look like, you know,
- 3:43for the weekend, and what that's going to look like. I do think
- 3:49that there's a you know, there's a a level of confidence that that if
- 3:54he's going to miss time, it won't be that much. So we'll keep
- 3:58our fingers crossed. Yeah, Castle has been impressive early. I obviously scores
- 4:02it, he rebounds, he handles the ball well. He looks fit to
- 4:08play in your system. Is that what you're seeing? Yeah? I think
- 4:12he gives just the perimeter some much needed pop athletically, and he's a tremendous
- 4:21on the ball defensive player with physical strength and athleticism and ability to drive the
- 4:27ball and make plays. You know, he just he's got high level talent.
- 4:33You know, he's a potential lottery pick, and and you know,
- 4:38just having guys that could just go and make a play or erase and a
- 4:43mistake, you don't want those guys out of the lineup because you know,
- 4:46this year's team you know, does we don't have a tounn of old.
- 4:50We have a lot of good players, you know, but Steps gives us
- 4:55that guy with that real athletic pop solo ball, got the start and place
- 5:00on Tuesday, played more minutes than anybody, went three for twelve from the
- 5:03field. But as you know, you've been seeing him shoot since he came
- 5:06on campus. I like his shot. It looks good to me. It
- 5:11hadn't gone in like he would like. I'm sure, But what do you
- 5:14make of it so far? Yeah? I think he you know, we
- 5:17see a guy that that that shoots the heck out of it, you know,
- 5:23daily here. I think, you know, he's got some things defensively
- 5:28that showed up early on that like all freshmen, he's got to get sorted
- 5:32out. But I think the shooting is real. The athleticism and the and
- 5:36the heart, all that stuff is real. He's our type of guy.
- 5:42He's gonna, you know, he's eventually going to become a really really good
- 5:46player for this team. But he's a freshman, and you know, look
- 5:49across the country, there's some very high level freshmen right now that haven't exactly
- 5:55hit the ground running. And we believe in our ability to to get him
- 6:00to the point where he's really going to help this team. You know,
- 6:03especially as this year goes on, looks like a guy that's kind of a
- 6:08cool customer to me in games anyway. Is that something you you're happy about
- 6:14or do you look for that in players when you recruit him? He wants
- 6:17it bad. I mean, he's probably a little bit too much perfectionist,
- 6:21a little too hard on himself, you know. I think he's got a
- 6:25great demeanor. He's, you know, just he comes from a great family.
- 6:30He's got just a you know, a great pedigree about him. So
- 6:35I think it's I think he's got the perfect blend of intensity and in confidence.
- 6:43Dan Hurley willis U com men's basketball coaches, Show Moore to come,
- 6:46got to talk about the bench, the other freshman, Samson Johnson, what's
- 6:49going on in the Big East is Creighton and Marquette putting things agein Providence having
- 6:55a great win, and Jordan Hawkins. We had to talk about him,
- 6:58what he's doing in New Orleans right now. It's all coming up as we
- 7:00continue here on liar Field
